5 bold predictions for Day 1 of the 2018 NFL Draft
With the 2018 NFL Draft set to kick off Thursday, April 26, theScore's NFL editors make five bold predictions about what will transpire.Record-setting 7 QBs drafted in 1st roundThe 1983 draft remains the record holder for the most quarterbacks taken in the first round. Six passers went within the first 27 picks and three of them - John Elway (1st), Jim Kelly (14th), and Dan Marino (27th) - became Hall of Famers. A new record will be set this year when seven quarterbacks hear their names called on Day 1. Aided by an early run of four QBs taken in the top five, Lamar Jackson and Mason Rudolph both find homes halfway through the round, and Luke Falk sneaks into the back half to a team with an aging veteran. - Michael McClymontCowboys trade for Thomas moments before draftThe Dallas Cowboys have done an admirable job of keeping eccentric owner Jerry Jones in check during recent drafts, but the dam can only hold the waves of his ego for so long. Desperate to boost the fanbase's hype following the release of Dez Bryant, the Cowboys send a second-rounder to the Seattle Seahawks for Earl Thomas moments before the draft starts, hoping the All-Pro safety can be the defensive difference-maker who sends Dallas back to the postseason after Thomas himself teased the move midseason. - Jack BrowneRosen takes Rodgers-esque slide to ChargersIt was 13 years ago when a certain future Hall of Fame quarterback had to sit in the green room listening to 23 other names called before he landed in what would eventually become a perfect situation in Green Bay. The two have spent some time together and Josh Rosen exhibits some similarities to Aaron Rodgers, and he will add another similarity to that list on Thursday night. With a shoulder injury and history of concussions in his past, Rosen's medical checks will hurt his stock in the early picks before he lands as Philip Rivers' successor at No. 17 in the city he's called home through his collegiate career. - Mitch SandersonBrowns double 1st-round picks from 2 to 4The Cleveland Browns currently hold picks No. 1 and No. 4 in the first round but could be the first team since the New York Jets in 2000 to possess four picks on Day 1. General manager John Dorsey is expected to select a quarterback with the first overall selection, but anything can happen after that. A team with two first-rounders, such as the Buffalo Bills or New England Patriots, will look to use their assets in an effort to trade up to No. 4 to give Cleveland three picks. The Browns will then use their wealth of Day 2 and Day 3 picks to trade into the bottom of the first round if a prospect they love falls into their laps. Four first-round picks could be just what the doctor ordered for the Browns to exit the NFL's basement. - Mike AlessandriniPatriots trade into top 10, but not for QBThe New England Patriots have the assets to make a surprising move up the draft board with two first- and second-round picks. Instead of going after a passer to succeed Tom Brady, as some have speculated, the Patriots will bolster their roster in an attempt to let Brady lead the team to his sixth Super Bowl championship. Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson offers a tremendous upgrade to an offensive line that lost tackle Nate Solder to free agency. Keeping Brady on his feet and out of harm's way continues to be New England's main key to success. - Esten McLaren(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Rival coaches, GMs believe Browns will pick Mayfield at No. 1
There's a "mounting belief" among head coaches and general managers around the NFL that the Cleveland Browns will use the first overall pick on Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Reports in recent days have hinted at Cleveland's interest in Mayfield, but most draft pundits have pegged USC's Sam Darnold and Wyoming's Josh Allen as the likeliest No. 1 selections Thursday night.Related - NFL executive: Mayfield 'definitely' in conversation for No. 1 pickMayfield won the 2017 Heisman Trophy and has been hailed as the most accurate passer in this year's class. The Browns - who also own the No. 4 overall pick - have been very secretive about their plan for Thursday night, setting up one of the least predictable first rounds in history.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Josh Allen apologizes after offensive tweets surface hours before draft
Josh Allen acknowledged and apologized late Wednesday night for using racially offensive language in tweets when he was in high school.Several tweets from 2012 and 2013 in which Allen used the "N-word" multiple times were dug up Wednesday night. Allen acknowledged the existence of the tweets to ESPN's Stephen A. Smith and apologized for them, saying he was young and dumb, according to ESPN.The tweets, which were cited by Yahoo! Sports, have since been erased from Allen's account. The quarterback from Wyoming is certain to be a first-round pick in Thursday night's NFL draft, and could potentially be the first overall selection based on many draft boards.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. A woman who told police in 2017 that Oakland Raiders corner Gareon Conley raped her has filed a civil lawsuit against him, TMZ Sports has learned. Two days before last year's NFL draft, the then-23-year-old woman said Conley raped her at a Cleveland hotel on April 9. However, a grand jury dismissed the case without charges in July. She reportedly claims in the suit that she "sustained serious physical, psychological, emotional, and mental injuries" in her encounter with Conley. Reuben Foster's ex-girlfriend recants domestic violence claim
The former girlfriend of San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster claimed Wednesday that she can prove Foster did not cause her injuries from a reputed domestic violence incident in February. In a statement released through her attorney, Stephanie Rickard, Elissa Ennis stated Foster "did not strike her, injure her or threaten her," per NBC Sports' Matt Maiocco.Rickard states the criminal charges against Foster are based on lies. Ennis’ injuries were apparently the result of a physical fight with another woman, and there is a video of the altercation."She was extremely upset and told him if he broke up with her she would 'trash his career,'" Rickard said. "Ennis apologizes to everyone that may have been harmed in this case, especially Mr. Foster."Related - 49ers' Lynch: If Foster did hit a woman, he won't be part of teamThe second-year linebacker is currently sitting out 49ers' offseason workouts to deal with his legal matters. NFL can't prove that any team asked Guice inappropriate questions
After a lengthy investigation, the NFL couldn't confirm that any team asked former LSU running back Derrius Guice inappropriate questions at the scouting combine, league spokesman Brian McCarthy told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on Wednesday. In March, Guice said that a team asked him if he liked men during a combine interview just to see his reaction. He also said that a team suggested his mother was a prostitute. The league launched an investigation shortly thereafter, which included formal reviews and reports from every club that interviewed him.The 2018 draft hopeful has since told teams that his remarks were taken out of context, and that no such questions were asked during his meetings, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. This is not the first time teams have come under fire for potentially asking about a prospect's sexual orientation. The Atlanta Falcons asked cornerback Eli Apple the same question in 2016. They later apologized and held a "social responsibility" seminar for coaching staff, but weren't punished by the league. (Apple was ultimately drafted by the New York Giants.)Guice is expected to be selected within the first two rounds.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Not-to-do list: Can the Browns avoid botching another important draft?
Surely, they can't screw this up, right? The Cleveland Browns, the most tortured franchise in the NFL's Super Bowl era, own the surest way out of their 1-31 doldrums: the first and fourth picks in Thursday's draft. But this isn't an entirely new position for the Browns.Just last year, the team owned multiple first-round picks, including the first overall selection, and passed on Deshaun Watson - twice. The organization with the poorest history of drafting quarterbacks elected not to take a passer and instead picked defensive end Myles Garrett. Then, on the clock with the 12th pick and Watson still sitting in the green room, the Browns traded the pick to the Houston Texans, who promptly selected the national championship-winning quarterback. Now, Garrett was a worthy selection and will likely become a fine pro, but in the six starts prior to his season-ending injury in 2017, Watson proved himself a franchise quarterback and Rookie of the Year favorite. The Browns will enter this draft still desperately searching for that guy.In the last 17 years, the Browns have drafted quarterbacks Spergon Wynn, Luke McCown, Charlie Frye, Brady Quinn, Colt McCoy, Brandon Weeden, Johnny Manziel, Cody Kessler, and DeShone Kizer. If you think there's no way they could possibly screw this up, history isn't on your side. Here are five ways Cleveland can avoid going totally Cleveland in the 2018 draft:Don't pass on Darnold, RosenOf the five or six quarterbacks who could go in the first round, Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen most meet the franchise-quarterback profile. Both have been hailed as transcendent talents since high school and are believed to possess the talent and moxie to thrive in a franchise-savior role.Should the Browns pass on both California kids, they'll likely rue the 2018 draft as a missed opportunity to step out of the league's hinterland.Recent rumors have linked Cleveland to Wyoming's Josh Allen with the first overall pick. New Browns general manager John Dorsey is known to grow enamored with cannon-armed quarterbacks. As GM of the Kansas City Chiefs last year, he traded up to select Patrick Mahomes with the No. 10 pick. The Browns also have a history of selecting quarterbacks with a "big arm." Kizer started 15 games for Cleveland in 2017 but struggled to adapt to the pro game and led the team to an 0-16 season.Darnold and Rosen will have their rookie struggles as well, but they should last long enough to see the franchise rebuild through.Don't miss out on Barkley with 4th pickThe Browns could go a number of ways with their two early picks. They could take the best player at No. 1 and wait to take a quarterback at No. 4. They could get the signal-caller of their choosing at the top of the draft and take the best player available three selections later. They could also trade one or both picks. Most mocks have the Browns getting their quarterback at No. 1. If the Giants and Jets follow suit at Nos. 2 and 3, Cleveland would be in prime position to take the best player available. And the consensus among draft analysts is that Penn State running back Saquon Barkley is the premier player in this year's draft, regardless of position."He has a 100 percent chance of being an All-Pro," veteran draft analyst Gil Brandt told Ben Baskin of The MMQB.The Browns enter Thursday with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to overhaul their backfield for the next decade by selecting a quarterback and running back atop the same draft. If Barkley follows the NFL path laid out by Leonard Fournette and Ezekiel Elliott in previous seasons, the Browns would be foolish to pass up on potentially their best rusher since Jamal Lewis.Don't wait until 2nd round to get QBIt may seem unlikely, but as stated before, the Browns waited until the second round to pick a quarterback last year. In that draft, Cleveland passed on the likes of Mitchell Trubisky, Mahomes, and Watson.Tyrod Taylor was brought aboard via free agency to take over as starting quarterback and head coach Hue Jackson said there will be no competition for the job. If the Browns truly believe they're settled at the position, they could conceivably target top prospects at other positions. If passing on Darnold and Rosen is a grave mistake, ignoring the class' abundance of first-round quarterback talent altogether would be catastrophic. The Browns haven't won a game since Dec. 24, 2016, so the roster has many obvious holes, but quarterback remains the most glaring. Hopefully, the franchise has learned from its many missteps.Don't draft 2 quarterbacksThere's not drafting a quarterback and then there's drafting too many.Members of the Browns' front office have confirmed to The Ringer's Kevin Clark that they've considered all of their options with their two first-round picks, including drafting a pair of pass-throwers. While they would not confirm whether that strategy is viable, Clark says they've "thought about it, discussed it, and investigated it."Sure, the Browns would have a better chance of finding their quarterback of the future by selecting as many options as possible, but as witnesses to the Kirk Cousins saga in Washington, it's best to avoid such drama. The Redskins picked their starting and backup QBs in the 2012 draft, only to see the first pick (Robert Griffin III) leave town after four seasons and then enter into a messy contract standoff with Cousins over the past two years.Pick one, Cleveland. And make sure it's the right one.Stop stockpiling picksThe easiest way for a team to earn praise from pundits is to trade a high pick for a collection of future picks. The Browns were celebrated for doing exactly that last year.Under Sashi Brown, the Browns hoarded picks by the barrel. Now is the time to cash in on that draft capital.Cleveland will enter Thursday night wielding two first-round picks, three second-round selections, a fourth-, a fifth-, and two sixth-rounders. The team can't possibly get any worse than it was last season. The Browns now need to enter into the business of collecting talent, lest they find themselves in this same position next year.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ex-Colts GM Grigson admits poor communication skills led to his firing
As NFL personnel wrap up their draft preparations this week, former Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson will be watching from the metaphorical sidelines.Indianapolis fired Grigson in January 2017, and he says a lack of communication contributed to his demise."What I really think that I wasn't able to ever do in that time I was there (with the Colts) was really get to be a human at times," Grigson told SiriusXM Radio's Alex Marvez and Phil Savage on Wednesday. "I hunkered down and just was laser-focused. I probably should have pressed pause and took some time to breathe for a second and communicate better to let people in more. I was only like that with my inner circle."Grigson also believes he could have done a better job of getting his thoughts and explanations across to the public."Maybe I blew it because I just never took the time to really establish relationships with the media," Grigson said. “I came up in kind of an old-school way. I thought you just have to win football games and you don't have to worry about doing those types of things. And I just never was a politician in that way."Indianapolis went 52-34 under Grigson, but his admitted problems with communication may have contributed to his reported feud with then-coach Chuck Pagano and owner Jim Irsay.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Packers among teams looking to trade up in 1st round
The Green Bay Packers may be abandoning their reputation Thursday night.Green Bay is reportedly looking to move up during the first round of the draft, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Packers currently hold the No. 14 overall pick. This would mark the first time the Packers have moved up during the first round since 2009, where they selected linebacker Clay Matthews.Green Bay promoted Brian Gutekunst to general manager in January, replacing Ted Thompson, who previously served in the role since 2005.The Packers boast a league-best 12 selections for the upcoming draft.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Broncos getting calls about No. 5 pick
The Denver Broncos' No. 5 pick in the draft is apparently a hot commodity.Related - Report: Browns have engaged in discussions about No. 4 pickThe Broncos have received calls from teams wondering what it will cost to move up to the fifth overall pick, reports James Palmer of NFL Network.Broncos general manager John Elway said last week that he was open to trading the selection.Denver owns one pick in each of the first two rounds, and two picks in each of the third, fourth, and fifth rounds. However, the team doesn't have any picks in Round 6 or 7.Shipping the No. 5 selection to a team looking to draft a top quarterback prospect could allow the Broncos to address other areas of need with later picks.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: 8 teams have expressed interest in free agent C.J. Anderson
Free-agent running back C.J. Anderson appears to be a man with options.Eight teams have reportedly expressed interest in the former Pro Bowler, who spent his first five NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos, according to Mike Klis of 9News.There is currently no timeline for Anderson to sign, as the results of the 2018 NFL Draft beginning Thursday night are likely to impact teams' needs. An undrafted free-agent signing by Denver in 2013, Anderson rushed for a career-high 1,007 yards in 2017, but managed just three rushing touchdowns with one more coming as a receiver. He was released by the Broncos on April 16.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Dez Bryant rejected multi-year offer from Ravens
Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant turned down a multi-year offer from the Baltimore Ravens, a source told former ESPN reporter Ed Werder. It's unclear when the contract was proposed, as the Ravens reportedly dropped out of the running for Bryant on Monday upon securing the services of Willie Snead as a restricted free agent from the New Orleans Saints.Bryant is believed to be looking for a one-year contract, which would allow him to re-enter the open market in 2019 in search of a long-term deal. The Ravens were in favor of a multi-year deal for salary-cap purposes, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The three-time Pro Bowler isn't expected to sign with a team until after the NFL draft, which begins Thursday evening and runs through Saturday afternoon.Bryant, who turns 30 in November, posted 69 catches for 838 yards and six touchdowns last year.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The New England Patriots may have their sights set on an unconventional heir to quarterback Tom Brady's throne.Lamar Jackson has visited with the team twice - once for a private workout in South Florida, and once in Foxborough, according to Jenny Vrentas of the MMQB.NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added that New England's interest in the quarterback prospect is "legit."Jackson is widely believed to be the fifth-ranked quarterback on most 2018 draft boards, coming in behind the top group of Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, and Baker Mayfield. The Patriots may have the assets required for a potential trade up to select Jackson, as they own the No. 23 and No. 31 selections in Thursday's first round, along with two more picks in Saturday's second round.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL owners feared Trump's ire over kneeling, recording reveals
A number of NFL owners expressed fear over backlash the league would face from President Donald Trump if players continued to kneel during the national anthem when the two sides met in October.Commissioner Roger Goodell requested the contents of the meeting stay confidential, but Ken Belson and Mark Leibovich of the New York Times obtained an audio recording. They corroborated statements from the tape with attendees of the meeting. In their appeal to players to stop kneeling, several owners appeared concerned with how Trump's non-stop criticism against the NFL and those who demonstrated during the anthem would hurt the league's image."The problem we have is, we have a president who will use that (kneeling) as fodder to do his mission that I don't feel is in the best interests of America, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft said. "It's divisive and it's horrible."Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, who called Trump's presidency "disastrous," warned players that antagonizing Trump would only lead him to continue his attack on the NFL."We've got to be careful not to be baited by Trump or whomever else," Lurie said. "We have to find a way to not be divided and not get baited."Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula said the league was "under assault" and was battling a "media problem.""To me, this is like a glacier moving into the ocean," Pegula noted. "We're getting hit with a tsunami."Later on in the session, owners and players agreed to partner to combat social injustices. Retired wide receiver Anquan Boldin suggested owners needed to back the players to show they care. Safety Eric Reid, then of the San Francisco 49ers, and Eagles defensive end Chris Long were among the other players in the room. Both sides agreed to meet again in the future, and quickly issued a joint statement to the public:"Today owners and players had a productive meeting focused on how we can work together to promote positive social change and address inequality in our communities," the statement said. "NFL executives and owners joined NFLPA executives and player leaders to review and discuss plans to utilize our platform to promote equality and effectuate positive change. We agreed that these are common issues and pledged to meet again to continue this work together."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Antonio Callaway takes responsibility for failed marijuana test at combine
Florida wide receiver Antonio Callaway apologized for failing a drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine.Callaway's agent previously contended that the positive test was a result of a diluted sample."I take full responsibility for everything," Callaway told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Callaway also said he received advice from Pittsburgh Steelers superstar Antonio Brown."There is too much opportunity to be messing up," Callaway said.Callaway caught 54 passes for 721 yards and three touchdowns in 2016 but missed the entire 2017 season while being investigated for credit card fraud. Josh Rosen: 'The greatest of all time haven't always been picked 1, 2, 3'
Josh Rosen doesn't appear to be concerned about when he'll be selected during the 2018 NFL Draft.Rosen, widely considered one of the top quarterbacks available in this year's class, is an option for the Cleveland Browns at No. 1 overall, with some believing the top spot is a battle between fellow pivots Josh Allen and Sam Darnold. But regardless of where he's picked, the 21-year-old Rosen indicated he'll be confident heading into his first NFL season."The greatest of all time haven’t always been picked one, two, three," he said via NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman, while adding that winning is the priority.Rosen may have a point. Tom Brady famously fell to the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft, Drew Brees was a second-round selection in 2001, and Joe Montana was taken in the third round in 1979.Of course, many first overall picks have lived up to the hype, including Terry Bradshaw (1970), John Elway (1983), Troy Aikman (1989), and Peyton Manning (1998).Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Sam Darnold will wear brown tie at NFL draft
Sam Darnold will wear a brown tie to the 2018 NFL Draft, a possible hint that he's sure the Cleveland Browns will select him first overall, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wednesday, according to Matt Lombardi of The Spun.A video on NFL.com, in which Darnold is seen shopping for his Thursday evening attire, does indeed show a brown tie around the USC product's neck as he tries on a suit jacket.Darnold, Wyoming's Josh Allen, and Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield are all believed to have a legitimate chance at hearing their respective names called first. UCLA's Josh Rosen is expected to be picked early as well, but hasn't been rumored to be atop the Browns' draft board.Cleveland has managed to maintain great mystery over which quarterback prospect it'll tap to be the next face of the franchise, and general manager John Dorsey told Steve Wyche of NFL Network that not even his wife knows who he's going to draft at No. 1.There's virtually no chance the Browns trade the first overall pick, however, as Dorsey also said he's received no legitimate offers for the selection.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Which teams should trade up in the 1st round of the NFL draft?
The 2018 NFL Draft is poised to shape the landscape of the league for years to come. This year presents one of the deepest quarterback and running back classes in recent memory, while a number of safeties and cornerbacks should be able to make an immediate impact. With the goal of winning a Super Bowl top of mind for all 32 general managers, we evaluate which teams should push their chips forward and trade up in the first round in order to fill an obvious need or fortify their bid for a title.Bills The Bills snapped what was the longest playoff drought in major North American sports on New Year's Eve, providing their fans with a long-awaited measure of relief. Buffalo jettisoned quarterback Tyrod Taylor to Cleveland in exchange for a third-round pick, however, and needs to find its quarterback of the future or risk stalling any progress made in 2017.Armed with five top-65 picks (Nos. 12, 22, 53, 56, and 65), the Bills are well-equipped to surge up the board in order to select one of UCLA's Josh Rosen, Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, Louisville's Lamar Jackson, USC's Sam Darnold, or Wyoming's Josh Allen. Buffalo can't afford to have a transition year with unproven veteran AJ McCarron under center. The Bills must be major players at this year's draft and shake up the board up with a seismic move for an elusive franchise quarterback.Cardinals Is anyone confident that the Cardinals can realize their potential with Sam Bradford at quarterback? It doesn't appear the team's new regime led by head coach Steve Wilks is enamored with Bradford, while former Cardinals bench boss Bruce Arians lobbied for the team to select Louisville's Lamar Jackson. It was reported that the Cardinals are trying desperately to move up from No. 15, a welcome development as the Rams and 49ers have markedly improved during the offseason. The last place NFL teams should want to be is stuck in no man's land and a move up the board would signify the Cardinals' intention to be in the mix for a playoff spot this fall.Falcons Atlanta is in the middle of its Super Bowl window and should be actively looking to improve while mired in the uber-competitive NFC South. The Falcons don't sport many weaknesses and should try to pursue the best player available in order to leapfrog the rest of the conference's leading contenders. It would likely take the Falcons' 2019 first-round pick in order to move up drastically from No. 26 but there are some creative solutions to be found, including packaging future picks with some decent trade-bait assets on the roster. Imagine the Falcons if they add another edge rush threat in N.C. State's Bradley Chubb or inside/outside linebacker Roquan Smith from Georgia? It could be a nightmare for coordinators to figure out one of the NFL's most talented, well-rounded teams.Packers It would be arrogant to assume that Aaron Rodgers can carry an otherwise anonymous offensive group to the postseason, and the Packers may be squandering the remaining peak years of one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play.Green Bay's approach to the draft and free agency was marked by staunch conservatism, but the team promoted Brian Gutekunst to replace Ted Thompson as general manager in January. Gutekunst will likely be looking to make a splash during his first draft as general manager, while the Packers need to actualize their Super Bowl window and act aggressively. The Packers own an NFL-best 12 draft picks, including four selections in the fifth round. If they can find a suitable package to move up for a game-changing talent like Penn State's Saquon Barkley, they should go all-in.Patriots New England holds two first-round picks (Nos. 23 and 31) for the first time since 2012, where they hit two home runs in Chandler Jones and Dont'a Hightower. While the Patriots' vulnerabilities were on display during the playoffs, they're still the reigning AFC champions and will be penciled in for a Super Bowl appearance until another team proves themselves worthy. The Patriots will eventually need to find a successor to Tom Brady, after trading Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a 2018 second-round pick. With two first-round and two second-round picks, the Patriots have the draft capital to stun the rest of the league and acquire one of the marquee quarterbacks, Barkley, or even a top edge talent like Chubb.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Paul Richardson: Police assumed I was drug dealer, asked if I was in gang
Virginia police are reviewing an incident involving Washington Redskins receiver Paul Richardson and a trooper after the 26-year-old tweeted about being pulled over Tuesday afternoon, ESPN reports. The former Seattle Seahawks receiver, who signed with the Redskins this offseason, recounted (in since-deleted tweets) that he was pulled over in a toll lane. The trooper asked if Richardson was in a gang and admitted to assuming he was a drug dealer.(Screenshot courtesy: ESPN)A spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police said Richardson was stopped "because the vehicle did not have license plates displayed as required by Virginia law" and was cited "for failing to have the vehicle properly registered."Richardson confirmed the story with a later tweet, clarifying that dealing with the legal matter over social media wasn't appropriate.
Report: Florida's Callaway tested positive for marijuana at combine
Florida receiver Antonio Callaway tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine in early March, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Callaway's agent attributes the positive test to a diluted sample and the player has told those close to him that he was merely overhydrated, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. He led the Gators in receiving with 721 yards and three touchdowns in 2016, but spent the 2017 campaign off the field due to an investigation for credit card fraud. He was also cited for marijuana possession in May.Formerly believed to be a potential first-round pick, the junior wideout is currently projected as a late-round selection.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Avoid the inevitable: Jones hopes fans in Dallas don't boo Goodell at draft
Jerry Jones' expectations for the 2018 NFL Draft, which will be hosted by the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, might be a little outlandish. The Cowboys owner is elated to be hosting the draft and hopes that fans in attendance showcase the same respect for commissioner Roger Goodell as he claims to have. Despite every draft Goodell has announced picks for thus far suggesting otherwise, Jones is optimistic fans will abstain from showering the commissioner with boos."May be a pretty good bet, but seriously we all know it’s a convenient place to be," Jones said when asked if he would bet a paycheck on Goodell getting a warm reception, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk."I don’t know of anybody maybe other than me that’s had more boos than Roger has. I know about how that works. I do hope we can be positive in our reception. We are going to do something pretty special and he did have a final say in that."It would be quite a change from last year:Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Joe Namath raves about Mayfield's 'outrageous' talent
If Baker Mayfield is selected by the New York Jets on Thursday, he'll have the undying support of a franchise legend.Hall of Famer and former Jets standout quarterback Joe Namath gave Mayfield a massive endorsement ahead of the draft, all but demanding his former club select him No. 3 overall."I haven't met (the top quarterback prospects), but I've watched them, and the most outrageous, so to speak, that I've seen has been Mayfield," Namath told ESPN's Rich Cimini. After watching many of Mayfield's games throughout his collegiate career, Namath disputed the notion that the reigning Heisman winner will struggle in the NFL due to his size."Hey, it wasn't just Georgia, it was a couple of years, early on, when I saw him play," he said. "I saw him a couple of years back. I never saw him look bad. I don't know how tall he is. I still don't know how big he is. Size can be a major asset, yes, size can be an asset in today's game. But Drew Brees, his size was questioned many times and he's one of the greatest players who's ever played."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Cheerleaders offer to settle lawsuit for $1 in exchange for meeting with Goodell
Two cheerleaders who have recently filed discrimination lawsuits against the NFL say they would settle the case for $1 in exchange for a meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell. The offer comes from the representative for former New Orleans Saints cheerleader Bailey Davis and former Miami Dolphins cheerleader Kristan Ware, and was delivered to NFL attorney Steven Hurd on Tuesday, ESPN reports.Davis accused the Saints of firing her for policy violations she has disputed and having separate rules for their male players and female cheerleaders. Ware filed a complaint in April claiming she was discriminated over her gender and religion. Both would settle for a "good faith" meeting between Goodell and four cheerleaders. They've given the NFL a May 4 deadline for a response."We're not asking them to admit fault, or to admit guilt, or even admit that there is anything wrong, but if they do want and expect that cheerleaders should have a fair working environment, as they have stated, then it doesn't make any common sense why the answer would be no," lawyer Sara Blackwell told the New York Times.A number of current and former cheerleaders have recently spoken out about the dangers and unhealthy environments of the job.Related: NFL cheerleaders recount unwanted interactions with fansThe claimants are also seeking for the NFL to institute rules and regulations for all NFL teams.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jerry Jones: Cowboys don't expect to find 'pure' replacement for Bryant
Just over a week after the Dallas Cowboys released Dez Bryant, team owner Jerry Jones made it very clear that the wide receiver's time with the team is over, regardless of the contract he might be willing to accept at a reduced price.Jones told the media on Tuesday that the Cowboys "need to move on knowing that we don't have Dez," and that he doesn't expect anyone to step in and take over the veteran's former role next season."I think we recognize that we've got a hole to fill with Dez," Jones said, according to ESPN. "We, actually, in general know right now that and have known that we probably won't have what we would call a pure X receiver to take the place of Dez."Jones says the Cowboys will try to add a receiver in this week's draft who can come in and help the corps, which currently includes Allen Hurns, Cole Beasley, Terrance Williams, and Ryan Switzer. Some media and players had complaints about how late into the offseason the Cowboys released Bryant, as most teams have spent their free-agent budget by April, but Jones isn't giving it a second thought."I have no thoughts about the timing of when we decided to move on," Jones said. "For everyone concerned, that was as good a time as any from the end of the season."The Baltimore Ravens have reportedly been the only team so far to have interest in Bryant, but they fell out of the running after making Willie Snead the third new receiver to sign with the team this offseason.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cardinals making 'a lot of noise' about trading up in draft
The Arizona Cardinals are making "a lot of noise" in trade discussions to move up in Thursday's NFL draft, potentially to select a quarterback, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Cardinals are currently slated to pick 15th overall.Rapoport added that No. 5 (Denver) and No. 6 (Indianapolis) could be draft slots to target in search of a quarterback. With only one pick in the first round and one pick in the second, it could prove challenging for general manager Steve Keim to get into the top five, but a move into the top 10 could be more realistic.Arizona was known to be targeting Patrick Mahomes in the draft last year, but the Kansas City Chiefs traded up to snag the quarterback before the Cardinals went on the clock. The Cards signed veteran quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Mike Glennon to short-term deals in free agency this offseason.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Harris says Broncos shouldn't draft QB at No. 5: 'We want to win now'
Denver Broncos cornerback Chris Harris has seen enough from Case Keenum to believe his team shouldn't target a quarterback with the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft."We want to win now," Harris said Tuesday, according to The Denver Post's Kyle Frederickson. "We don't have time to wait."Denver signed Keenum as a free agent from the Minnesota Vikings to serve as a short-term solution to its quarterback problem, but there are still question marks at the position in the long term."Everybody I've talked to, the receivers, they're excited about him," Harris added of Keenum, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic. "They said he throws an easy ball to catch. That's what you want to hear. They haven't said that too many times since Peyton (Manning) was here about having an easily catchable ball."The Broncos should have plenty of options at No. 5, though any quarterback selected in that spot will require time to develop.Harris, who turns 29 in June, helped the Broncos capture Super Bowl 50 in February 2016. Rams pick up 5th-year options on Gurley, Peters
The Los Angeles Rams picked up their fifth-year options on cornerback Marcus Peters and running back Todd Gurley, the team confirmed Tuesday.Gurley is coming off an outstanding season where he led the NFL with 13 rushing touchdowns and rushed for 1,305 yards, adding 64 receptions for 788 yards and six receiving touchdowns. For his efforts, Gurley was named a first-team All-Pro, won Offensive Player of the Year, and finished second in MVP voting.Peters recorded 46 tackles, five interceptions, and four forced fumbles in 14 games with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2017 season. The Rams acquired Peters in a trade with the Chiefs in February, sending a 2018 fourth-round and 2019 second-round pick in exchange for the cornerback and a 2018 sixth-round pick.Gurley and Peters figure to be key components of the Rams' future as the team looks to build upon a strong 2017 season and contend for a Super Bowl.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. 5 prospects to be avoided in the NFL draft's 1st round
The first round of the NFL draft often dictates the immediate trajectory of a team. If it lands a future star or two within the first round, it can immediately raise the profile of a cellar-dwellar into playoff contender. It's imperative this year that teams nail their first-round pick, with seemingly two-thirds on the league presented with a passable chance at the postseason this fall. With that in mind, here are five players teams should avoid in the first round:Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming Although there hasn't been a consensus built on who the Browns will take first overall, Allen is very much in the running, with some analysts clearly labeling the Wyoming product as the top quarterback in the draft. This is an indictment of #DraftTwitter, which values conceits such as "arm talent." Though, Allen himself decreed "stats are for losers," a likely response to a query about his accuracy issues.Would you be comfortable placing a player who completed 56 percent of his passes while at Wyoming into the spotlight as the face of your NFL franchise? It's a quandary that scouting staffs and general managers will face Thursday. Allen will certainly be taken in the first round but some team may live to regret valuing a player with a rocket launcher of an arm over more proven collegiate stars.Derrius Guice, RB, LSUThere is only one running back worthy of a first-round grade and that goes to Penn State's Saquon Barkley, not Guice. Guice rushed for over 1,200 yards in his last two seasons at LSU but has been used sparingly as a receiver and he would represent better value on Day 2.While a debate rages on about whether it's efficient to take a running back in the first round, this isn't why Guice is being penalized here. Simply, this year's running back class is loaded with talent that could be found on Day 2, and an overreach for Guice could look dreadful with numerous backs looking to seize carries immediately upon being drafted. After Barkley is taken, it's worth waiting for a quality running back, Guice included.Calvin Ridley, WR, Alabama Ridley is often mentioned as the best wide receiver from a relatively weak cohort. Although there are several teams in need of a quality downfield threat, there are a few reasons to be wary of the two-time national champion. It'll be difficult to label Ridley as an injection of youth into his team's offense when he turns 24 in November. Though it isn't a disqualifying factor, teams will have to calculate how many years they'll get out of Ridley and whether the fact that he'll be entering his prime on his rookie deal serves as an asset or a detracting factor, as he'll be 30 by his seventh year in the league. Ridley never matched the production he displayed during his prodigious freshman year at Alabama, which could also be concerning. Avoid Ridley if you can.Maurice Hurst, DT, Michigan To be clear, Hurst is a first-round talent. The 22-year-old was reportedly diagnosed with a heart condition at the NFL combine, however, which ought to make some teams weary of investing draft capital on the former Michigan defensive tackle. It would be in poor taste to speculate how Hurst performs while battling the condition, but it also has reportedly scared a few teams off.Mike Hughes, CB, UCF Hughes starred during UCF's undefeated season but it will be a tough transition to the NFL for the undersized cornerback. Although he compiled an excellent junior year, Hughes was a one-year wonder, who was largely known for his proficiency in the return game as opposed to his work against wide receivers. It's possible that Hughes may be propelled due to a small sample size, which could lead to a huge learning curve in the NFL.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Marrone expects Bortles to take 'big jump' after signing rich deal
Blake Bortles signed a three-year, $54-million contract in February, and Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone expects him to play like a $54-million quarterback come September."By being rewarded a contract - like I always tell the players - you get rewarded with that contract, obviously, we expect something in return and we expect you to make a big jump again this year," Marrone said of the pivot Tuesday, according to Marc Sessler of NFL.com.Bortles had been a lightning rod for criticism during most of his first three NFL seasons - and justifiably so - but led Jacksonville to the AFC Championship Game in his fourth campaign, and nearly to the Super Bowl. The quarterback then inked the three-year deal early this offseason, but questions linger about whether he can become anything more than a game manager. The former third overall pick threw for 3,687 yards with 21 touchdowns and a career-low 13 interceptions in 2017.The Jags, loaded with young talent on both sides of the ball, are expected to contend for a championship this season.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. What would The Avengers look like if they were made up of NFL stars?
theScore imagines what the cast of The Avengers would look like if it were comprised entirely of NFL stars.Iron Man - Tom BradyHe thinks he's the hero, but he often treads into moral gray areas and even acts of pure villainy without any real recognition of his own wrongdoings. He's also a hugely accomplished egomaniac with a tall, beautiful partner who wishes he would quit his job now that he's getting older. You can insert both Tony Stark's and Brady's name into the start of that paragraph and both fit perfectly.Hulk - Odell Beckham Jr.While Beckham lacks the Hulk's size, he certainly has his temper and a flare for the dramatic - just ask Josh Norman or the infamous kicking net. Beckham and the Hulk are also both the most talented/powerful members of their respective teams and both have seen their weary workmates attempt to get rid of them, deciding their powers weren't worth the headaches.Maybe the Giants need to invest in a Beckhambuster.Hawkeye - Drew BreesHawkeye is The Avengers' everyman - they guy who doesn't look like he belongs and lacks any obvious special physical talents but still somehow manages to find a way to succeed.Similarly, Brees doesn't look like an NFL quarterback, but he still takes on and vanquishes far more gifted rivals thanks to his laser-like accuracy. Now, if only Brees had a football that turned into a boxing glove, like Hawkeye's arrows. Seriously.Spider-Man - Jimmy GaroppoloThe fresh-faced futures of their respective universes, Spider-Man and Garoppolo were finally released by their overlords (Bill Belichick and Sony, respectively) and afforded new starts. And both were late but highly effective additions to their teams. Spider-Man turned the tide in Civil War while Garoppolo led the 49ers to a 5-0 finish last season.Jimmy GQ probably spent far less time being stuffed into lockers in high school than Peter Parker, though.Captain America - J.J. Watt Watt might not have Steve Rogers' lack of ego or physics-defying throwing ability, but the star pass-rusher certainly has Cap's moral compass considering his amazing Hurricane Harvey relief fund efforts. And at 6-foot-5 and 290 lbs, Watt can also boast being the pinnacle of human physical perfection. Also, Watt really, really, really loves America.Black Panther - Le'Veon BellBlack Panther is blessed with amazing vision, quickness, and instincts - the exact three traits most would use to describe Bell, whose unique running style has helped him become the king of NFL running backs. But will it be "Pittsburgh Forever" for Bell, with the Steelers reluctant to give him a satisfactory amount of vibranium?Star-Lord - Aaron RodgersCocky and not afraid to speak his mind? Check.Possesses unbelievable natural talents beyond what should be humanly possible? Check.Weird family issues? Double check.Bucky Barnes - Andrew LuckBarnes - aka the Winter Soldier - and Luck have two functioning arms between them and both cannot escape their poorly run organizations.Ant-Man - Russell WilsonYou get it.Thor - Rob GronkowskiGronkowski has a reputation for being rash, reckless, and immature - just like Thor in his early days.Gods compared to their compatriots, Gronk and Thor are both facing unclear futures after the physical toll of the job begins to show (at least Gronk still has two eyes).(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Pat Shurmur: Beckham will 'absolutely' be on Giants in 2018
New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur shredded whatever was left of the Odell Beckham Jr. trade rumors Tuesday, saying the wide receiver will "absolutely" be on the team in 2018, according to NFL Network's Kimberly Jones.Beckham was present Tuesday morning for the beginning of the Giants' first offseason minicamp, though he sat out most of practice to continue rehab on his ankle. The 25-year-old missed 12 contests a season ago after suffering a fractured ankle in Week 4.Despite the anxiety he's exhibited over his contract situation, Beckham also attended the Giants' voluntary offseason workouts earlier this April. There's no indication that Beckham and the Giants are any closer to hammering out a new deal than they were a few weeks ago. NFL executive: Mayfield 'definitely' in conversation for No. 1 pick
While most mock drafts have the Cleveland Browns selecting either Josh Allen or Sam Darnold first overall, an NFL executive told Adam Schefter of ESPN on Tuesday that Baker Mayfield is "definitely" in the conversation to be the first name called Thursday night. The former Oklahoma quarterback is the most accomplished player at his position in the draft, as Mayfield finished one of the most prolific college football careers ever by winning the Heisman Trophy last season. While Mayfield's skills are transferable to the NFL, critics point to his lack of height as a reason to drop him in the draft. The 23-year-old stands 6-foot-1, shorter than this year's other top quarterback prospects.Mayfield is currently listed at +600 by Bodog to be the first overall pick, significantly higher than Darnold (-215) and Allen (+175).Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Chargers GM seemingly doesn't appreciate Mayfield not prioritizing interview
A candidate to be selected No. 1 overall in the draft on Thursday, Baker Mayfield seems to have made a negative impact in his pre-draft interview with the Los Angeles Chargers, who own the No. 17 selection.Mayfield admitted last week to a lack of preparation for the interview, saying, "I didn’t look at (the Chargers) playbook as much as I should have. It could have gone a little bit better ... but at the same time, I’m prioritizing which playbooks I’m going to learn. No offense to them, but I’ve got a lot on my plate," according to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times.Chargers general manager Tom Telesco got his chance to respond on Monday, and he's apparently not letting Mayfield off the hook for his busy schedule."I’m probably not prepared to comment on that. My plate’s pretty full.
