Bryant excited by idea of joining Beckham, Giants: 'That'd be crazy'
The Dallas Cowboys released Dez Bryant after eight seasons with the team, and he's since made it clear that he's seeking revenge. The receiver would prefer to stay within the division to get a shot at Dallas twice a season, and was animated by the prospect of joining forces with Odell Beckham Jr. and the New York Giants."The Giants got a helluva defense," Bryant told 247Sports.com's Mike Fisher, who asked for his reaction to several potential destinations. "They're going to pay OBJ (Beckham), so (he's) coming back. Playing with him, Sterling (Shepard) ... the tight end (Evan Engram), (Eli) Manning? Crazy. ... That'd be crazy."The Giants, Washington Redskins, and Philadelphia Eagles reportedly aren't interested in Bryant, so he may be unable to get the retribution he seeks.Related: Prescott laments Bryant's release, says he wasn't part of decisionBryant noted that it wouldn't "wouldn't seem right" to sign with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers because there is "too much history" - likely referring to his infamous non-catch in the 2014 playoffs - and said it would be "fun" to play for the high-scoring Los Angeles Rams.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Rodgers frustrated by lack of say in Packers' personnel decisions
There is no doubt that Aaron Rodgers is the leader of the Green Bay Packers, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the star pivot wants more of a voice in major personnel decisions that affect him.Sources told Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports that Rodgers is seeking that power, and the fact that he doesn't currently have it is weighing on him as contract negotiations loom with the club.A few moves the Packers made this offseason are reportedly at the root of Rodgers' discontent, notably the decision to part ways with receiver Jordy Nelson and quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt.Shortly after Van Pelt wasn't retained, Rodgers appeared on ESPN's "Golic and Wingo" and voiced his concerns with the move."I thought that was an interesting change, really without consulting me," the six-time Pro Bowler said. "There's a close connection between quarterback and quarterback coach, and that was an interesting decision."Rodgers has two years left on his seven-year deal, but the Packers can franchise tag him in both 2020 and 2021 if they choose, which would keep the pivot in Green Bay for four more seasons. The 34-year-old is the ninth-highest-paid quarterback in the league in terms of average annual salary, a standing that likely isn't going to change with the Packers holding the cards in any contract-extension discussions.Rodgers' feelings toward the club, however? That appears to be a fluid situation at this point.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
No checkdowns: Why QB-hungry teams should shoot early in this year's draft
Quarterbacks are king in the NFL. They drive storylines, create headlines, lead teams, and give fan bases hope. It's no secret that they fill the most important position in the game and without a good one, its extremely difficult to sustain success in the league. This year's draft crop offers NFL teams with five viable options to have a potential franchise quarterback as well as a handful of players who could be developed into staples in the pro ranks. Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Baker Mayfield all appear heavy favorites to go in the first round while Mason Rudolph is reportedly in the mix to sneak into the top 32 as well. This abundance of talent doesn't come around very often. Over the past 25 drafts, just five quarterbacks have been taken in the first round twice with six going off the board just once (five in 1999, six in 1983). Opportunities to acquire franchise quarterbacks have been a great mystery of the NFL - everyone wants one, but no one has a fool-proof strategy to find one.The draft has been the best bet.Trading for a franchise passer close to their prime has rarely worked out quite simply because if that player was actually going to be successful, they wouldn't have been traded in the first place. Sam Bradford's trade to the Minnesota Vikings in 2016, Carson Palmer being dealt to the Oakland Raiders in 2011, and Jay Cutler's move to the Chicago Bears in 2009 all resulted in a team giving up at least one first-round pick and regretting it. For every Jimmy Garoppolo out there looking like a franchise passer after seven starts, there are 10 Mike Glennon's who've flashed false hope as a potential starter.Free agency is an option, but not a reliable one. Only three times in the last 15 years of the free-agency era has a quarterback widely considered to be a franchise changer hit the market.Drew Brees was let free go by the then-San Diego Chargers after they wanted Philip Rivers under center in 2006 and landed with the New Orleans Saints. The Indianapolis Colts saw the opportunity to get Andrew Luck and took it in 2012, letting Peyton Manning move on to the Denver Broncos. And just this spring, Kirk Cousins leveraged two seasons on the franchise tag with the Washington Redskins into a move to the Minnesota Vikings on a fully-guaranteed contract.Notice any similarities between the three situations? All three quarterbacks found themselves in unique situations with the teams they were drafted to that forced them out despite having proven to have talent. The teams that got them had ideal situations to attract a quarterback to come win right away. While we haven't seen Cousins on the field in purple and gold yet, Brees and Manning both won multiple individual accolades as well as Super Bowls with the Saints and Broncos, respectively. In short, when one of these guys does become available (assuming that ever happens again), the struggling teams of the league don't have much chance to win the sweepstakes. So for teams in search of that elusive franchise quarterback like the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos, and New York Giants, it's back to the draft. This draft, not the next one or the one after that. While Darnold and Rosen have had NFL scouts slobbering over them for well over a year, the 2019 and 2020 quarterback classes don't have any slam-dunk first-round picks at this point in time. Missouri's Drew Lock looks like the best option for next spring after a breakout 44-touchdown season right now, but he could easily see his stock fall down again if it turns out SEC defenses weren't taking him as seriously as they should have been. This only puts more pressure on the teams who need a new quarterback to slide in under center soon to grab a passer early in the draft or risk leaving the rest of the roster out to dry. Without a quarterback to give a team hope, the rest of the locker room can't help but begin to question the decisions of the coaches and front office. Players aren't naive enough to think quarterbacks are equally important as everyone else, and they don't want to sacrifice blood, sweat, and tears if they don't think they have a chance to win.Even if there aren't enough potential franchise passers to go around, quarterback-hungry teams need to be aggressive in assuring themselves of landing one of their guys. With teams like the Saints, New England Patriots, and Chargers also threatening to swoop in and grab a quarterback for two or three seasons down the road, the risk of walking away empty handed is great. Last draft, the Cardinals were left holding the bag after boasting about how much they liked multiple quarterbacks, only to see the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs jump ahead of them to pick Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes, respectively. The NFL is not only a dog-eat-dog world, but a copy-cat league as well. The Chiefs' and Texans' jumps appear to have worked out for both organizations, which certainly caught the eye of the rest of the league. Teams can hope to land a Russell Wilson in the third round or a Dak Prescott in the fourth, but that's like counting on the lottery for your retirement funds. If winning games and championships are in a team's plans, it needs to be aggressive and impatient to get its franchise quarterback.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Nick Mangold retires after 11-year run with Jets
Longtime New York Jets center Nick Mangold announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday morning.Mangold, a former first-round draft pick, played his entire 11-year career in green and white before he was released in February 2017. He didn't sign on with another team last season."In my 11 years as a Jet, there were plenty of ups and downs but, through it all, I wanted to be the Steady Eddie," he wrote in a statement.Mangold will sign a one-day deal with the only franchise he's known in order to retire as a Jet. He'll no longer appear on the field for the organization, but he hinted at staying on in a different role."My biggest regret is not bringing the Lombardi Trophy to New York but, as I retire, I will continue my efforts to bring the trophy home in a different capacity," he said.Mangold retires at age 34.
Rivers unfazed by Chargers potentially drafting QB: 'It's inevitable'
The Los Angeles Chargers have already acknowledged the possibility of spending a first-round pick this year on a quarterback, and the face of the franchise doesn't have a problem with that."I look around at places, some guys that have had far more success than I have had, and they're drafting quarterbacks," Philip Rivers told Chargers.com. "So, it's inevitable. It's going to happen at some point. It's happened at other places, we all know where they are. And those guys are either still sitting, or they've been traded. ... You know at some point we are going to draft a guy, and I don't see that as any negative."Rivers is coming off his 14th season with the Bolts, and has started every one of their games since 2006.After a bumpy 2016 campaign, he rebounded with a strong 2017, lending credence to the idea the 36-year-old may have a few more elite seasons left in the tank."I think (general manager) Tom (Telesco), (owner) John (Spanos), and coach (Anthony) Lynn, these guys know my desire to continue going and hopefully play at a high level for a handful of more years," Rivers added. "But, at the same time, shoot, as an organization you've got to prepare for down the road. If the right guy (is there who) they see fit, at some point they're going to have to make that decision."Rivers, a former first-round pick himself, threw for 4,515 yards with 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions a season ago.Los Angeles holds the 17th overall pick of the draft, which begins April 26.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Adidas willing to sign Kaepernick if NFL team signs him
Colin Kaepernick's bid to resume his professional football career received a major vote of confidence Monday.Adidas North America president Mark King said the apparel giant would sign Kaepernick to an endorsement deal if the quarterback plays in the NFL again."If he signs on a team, we would definitely want to sign him," King said via Greg Moore of The Arizona Republic during an appearance at Arizona State's Global Sports Summit.Kaepernick has been a leading voice in protests against police brutality and racial inequality, drawing the ire of fans and NFL owners alike, and even the President of the United States. The quarterback has been a free agent since opting out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March 2017, when it became apparent the team wouldn't keep him in its long-term plans."We love athletes that have a platform to make the world a better place," King said. "If they’re an activist in a way that brings attention to something that moves the world forward, even if there's controversy at that moment, we're really interested in those athletes because I think it represents the world today."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Seahawks expected to release McDowell after not being medically cleared
The Seattle Seahawks are expected to release defensive tackle Malik McDowell as he has not yet been medically cleared, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. There is hope that the 2017 second-round pick will be cleared by another team. The 21-year-old never got a chance to start his NFL career as he suffered multiple injuries - including a concussion and facial injuries - in an ATV accident a few weeks before training camp started last July. He spent the 2017 season on the non-football injury list.If McDowell clears waivers, he'll count for $3.6 million in dead cap money for 2018, but if another club claims him, his contract will be off the books in Seattle. The Michigan State product was the Seahawks' first selection in last year's draft, going off the board 35th overall.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL yet to interview Winston over groping case; Bucs frustrated by process
The NFL has yet to interview Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston over November accusations that he groped an Uber driver last summer in Arizona, the player told ESPN's Jenna Laine on Monday."I know the NFL has a process that they have to go through and I respect that process. It's not my job to speculate on that process," Winston said at the Buccaneers' first day of their offseason program. "My focus has been with this organization, getting the guys back in here, and focusing what we can do to become a better team this offseason."Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer, general manager Jason Licht, and coach Dirk Koetter all expressed frustration with the pace of the investigation at last month's league meetings. The investigation is reportedly expected to extend into the offseason. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was also frustrated by how slow the NFL moved in investigating Ezekiel Elliott's domestic violence allegations through 2016 and 2017.Winston denied the allegations in a statement in November. The 24-year-old was accused of sexual assault in 2013 while he attended Florida State. Winston avoided charges, but his accuser was paid $950,000 by the university in a settlement after they were ruled to have mishandled her complaint.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Donald skips start of voluntary workouts; Rams working on solution
Los Angeles Rams standout defensive tackle Aaron Donald missed the start of voluntary offseason workouts Monday.Donald and the Rams are working on a new contract for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, and head coach Sean McVay didn't appear to be phased by his absence, telling reports he expected him to hold out."We feel good about the dialogue that has existed," McVay said via NFL.com's Nick Shook. "We totally understand some of the other things that are going on with regards to wanting to get that deal, and with respect to Aaron, we feel really good about that dialogue. And this is a voluntary offseason program with where we're at. You know, he's a guy who's going to work hard on his off-time, and that's kind of where we're at. So, we feel good with everything that's going on with that."It's imperative for the Rams to sign Donald to a long-term deal, even after securing fellow star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in free agency.Donald is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019 and currently holds a $6.89-million cap hit for the 2018 season."I don't think I'd ever use the word crisis. ... Bills GM: 'You've got to have a franchise quarterback'
Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane may have tipped his draft strategy Monday.Armed with the No. 12 and No. 22 picks, the Bills could end up being one of the biggest players during the first round later this April, and they need a quarterback after trading Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns.Although the Bills signed AJ McCarron, it's been suggested that they could trade up to select one of the premier quarterbacks in the 2018 class, and Beane readily admitted the position is a priority."You've got to have a franchise quarterback. That's one of the main jobs of the GM," Beane told reporters during his press conference Monday, according to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News. It's possible that the Bills could find their quarterback at No. 12, but the top five signal-callers in this year's cohort might be off the board by then.Beane later hedged a bit, noting this spring's talent pool extends beyond quarterback.
NFL, NFLPA to prohibit 10 helmet models from being used
The NFL and NFLPA announced that 10 different helmet models will be prohibited from being worn by players following the results of laboratory testing.Previously, players could choose any helmet they wanted to wear that passed National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment certification standards. The helmets that are now being prohibited, after performing poorly in lab testing, have either been discontinued by the manufacturer or were produced by companies no longer making the helmets.Six different models have been banned immediately while the other four may be worn by players who used them in 2017, but cannot be worn by any new players. The testing was conducted in Ottawa with a team of biomechanical engineering consultants selected by the NFL and NFLPA.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. 4 landing spots for C.J. Anderson
A new fish joined the pool of free-agent running backs Monday with the Broncos' reported impending release of C.J. Anderson.Though Anderson never quite lived up to his potential in Denver, he's now arguably the top available player at his position, ahead of the likes of DeMarco Murray and Adrian Peterson.Teams that want to grab a potential starter instead of selecting one in the upcoming draft will likely pursue Anderson, but which four destinations are the best fits for the former undrafted free agent?Indianapolis ColtsCurrent RB depth chart: Marlon Mack, Robert Turbin, Josh Ferguson, Matt Jones, Christine MichaelThe Colts have yet to replace Frank Gore this offseason, and instead appear set to use one of their many draft picks on a young back to pair with Andrew Luck. However, general manager Chris Ballard might be tempted by a solid proven NFL starter and the consequent freedom to use all three of his second-rounders to patch the many other holes in Indy's roster. The Colts also have money to burn - just over $60 million in cap space, according to Spotrac - so few teams should be able to entice Anderson with a more generous offer.Anderson could form a strong thunder-and-lightning backfield with second-year man Mack, who teased game-breaking potential in 2017.Miami DolphinsCurrent RB depth chart: Frank Gore, Kenyan Drake, Senorise Perry, Brandon RadcliffThe Dolphins picked up Gore after his release from the Colts, but at 34 years old, they shouldn't rely on him as a featured back. Meanwhile, Kenyan Drake excelled after the midseason trade of Jay Ajayi, averaging 4.8 yards per tote, but the Dolphins have little talent behind him and he was inconsistent at times. It helps that Dolphins head coach Adam Gase was Anderson's offensive coordinator from 2013-14. After Miami's unsuccessful attempt to steal Anderson from Denver when he was a restricted free agent in 2016, the runner said he believes he's a Pro Bowler in Gase's system. The Dolphins need a stronger group of running backs to support the returning Ryan Tannehill, who likely needs to be eased back after missing all of 2017 with a knee injury.Miami should be the favorite for Anderson's services.Tampa Bay Buccaneers Current RB depth chart: Jacquizz Rodgers, Peyton Barber, Dalton CrossanThe Buccaneers are looking for a true starting back after releasing Doug Martin, and Anderson could provide a short-term solution or be a solid stop-gap option while a young back develops.Tampa Bay has bodies at running back, but little real quality. Rodgers and Barber have performed admirably when filling in for Martin and would be solid backups to Anderson, but neither should see the field too often if Tampa Bay wants to finally reach its potential on offense. However, Anderson might not be the type of game-changer the Bucs want in the backfield to help reduce the pressure on Jameis Winston, so it's possible they'll target the second group of running backs in the draft instead of taking a shot on a player with a relatively low production ceiling.Seattle SeahawksCurrent RB depth chart: Mike Davis, Chris Carson, C.J. Prosise, J.D. McKissicThe Seahawks have been searching for their next lead guy ever since Marshawn Lynch walked off into the sunset (then got bored and returned). As injuries forced the team to cycle through multiple starters, Seattle's running game was so ineffective in 2017 that Russell Wilson actually led the team in rushing attempts (95) and yards (586). Unsurprisingly, the Seahawks ranked 21st in rushing yards per game - and if you subtract Wilson's roughly 36 yards on the ground per game, only the Detroit Lions were worse. It's not like the Seahawks don't have talent; Carson, Davis, Prosise, and McKissic have all flashed potential and could excel in backup or change-of-pace roles, especially Carson and Prosise. They still need a lead back, however. Anderson's physical style would suit Seattle and provide Wilson with a reliable outlet after an offseason of major changes.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. They'll save $4.5 million in cap space by parting ways with him, according to Spotrac.Anderson put together five solid seasons in Denver but never truly cemented himself as a reliable featured back. He finished with just over 1,000 yards and three touchdowns in 2017 and is now arguably the most talented back on the open market. The Broncos, who are left with Devontae Booker and De'Angelo Henderson at running back, could be a prime candidate to take one of the top prospects in this year's draft.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Saints' Payton: I don't see a Luck or Wentz in this draft
Quarterbacks are the talk of the town as the NFL draft quickly approaches, with some analysts projecting six players at the position to be selected in the opening round. That number would represent the most on the first night since 1983, but New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton doesn't see any of the prospects measuring up to the top players in recent years."I don't see (Andrew) Luck in this draft, and I don't see Carson Wentz, who I liked a lot coming into the draft," Payton told Peter King of The MMQB. "I'd feel a little bit uneasy if I were at the top of this draft and I decided I had to have a quarterback. The pressure to get a quarterback is so great in this league, I get that. But we can't create 'em. I wouldn't be surprised if only one of these guys is left standing in four or five years, and if so, I'd guess it would be Sam Darnold."With Drew Brees having recently celebrated his 39th birthday, the Saints could look at long-term replacement options in this year's draft. Darnold definitely won't be around when New Orleans picks at 27th overall, so Payton will likely have to look elsewhere if he hopes to find his next starting pivot.Judging by his comments on the weekend, it doesn't appear likely he'll be doing so in the opening round.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. QB Battle: Who really is the best QB in this class?
This year, more than ever, quarterbacks are the talk of the NFL draft. With no clear-cut favorite among evaluators and scouts, endless debates have sparked across the NFL community. As many as six quarterbacks could be selected in the first round, each with their fair share of strengths and weaknesses.Allow us to continue the debate. Our football team gives their individual picks for the top quarterback in the 2018 draft. Which prospect is a cut above his peers?Sam DarnoldWhen selecting a quarterback in the top half of the first round, that player should possess franchise-changing talent. That's exactly what Darnold has. His footwork and throwing motion may need tweaking by NFL coaches, but his intangibles, leadership skills, and football acumen are second to none in this class. The former USC Trojan consistently looks off opposing safeties and has the ability to go through multiple progressions on any given pass set. Darnold's arm is the best in this draft (power isn't everything, Josh Allen) - his throws on the move are reminiscent of Super Bowl champion Aaron Rodgers, he can deliver darts into tight windows, and float touch passes when necessary. Darnold isn't a perfect prospect, but he's a better long-term investment than his counterparts. His turnover numbers should not be overblown - his aggressive style helped USC win a number of games. At the end of the day, Darnold's combination of football IQ, arm talent, and ability to extend plays not only gives him a higher ceiling than any quarterback in this class, but also greater potential than any signal-caller drafted since Andrew Luck. - Mike AlessandriniJosh RosenDon't overthink it. The most pro-ready quarterback of this class, both on the field and with the media, is Josh Rosen. Unlike some quarterbacks in this class who use athleticism to make plays, Rosen moves the ball down the field by sitting in the pocket and reading the defense on every snap. Coming from college, he can obviously get better with his technique, but Rosen is as polished with his footwork and throwing mechanics as any quarterback prospect since Luck. Rosen didn't have a good offensive line to play behind, nor did he have any top-rated weapons to throw to at UCLA, but was able to use anticipation, poise, and technique to make plays, completing 63 percent of his passes against the blitz. Concerns over having interests outside of football are naive in a league that is becoming increasingly socially aware, and that should instead be looked at as a sign of maturity, as he has managed to balance being outspoken while leading UCLA for three years. Rosen was conducting himself like a pro in many ways long before his fellow passing prospects. - Mitch SandersonBaker MayfieldMayfield possesses the abilities needed to grow along with whichever team selects him near the top of the draft. The 2017 Heisman Trophy winner needs refinement, but he has excellent awareness and throws accurately on the run while extending plays, something he'll need to do if thrust into a starting role. His athleticism should be a sign of versatility and provide coaches with confidence that he can adapt to a variety of systems and overcome poor offensive line play. He has accepted the underdog role affixed to him due to his size, and his competitiveness will be an asset to a young, possibly struggling team in his early days as a starter - whether that be in 2018 or beyond. Teams will need to bend their system and roster composition to maximize Mayfield's skill set and allow him to reach his full potential, but he's fully capable of being his own bridge for the team until that time comes. Comparisons to Johnny Manziel need to stop as Mayfield should instead be expected to have learned from those mistakes rather than repeat them. - Esten McLarenLamar JacksonEvery quarterback in this draft class has areas for improvement, but none boast more upside than Jackson. The Louisville product has a cannon for an arm and is lightning fast on his feet, making him every bit the dynamic threat Michael Vick was at one time. Jackson's accuracy needs improvement, but it's worth noting his completion percentage increased every year in college, and he played more from the pocket in 2017. For all the talk about his running abilities, Jackson displayed patience in the pocket and an ability to go through his progressions without panicking - a challenge for many athletic pivots - throughout his college career. If he's drafted by a team willing to tailor its system to Jackson's strengths, there's no doubt he can be one of the top quarterbacks in the game. Any talk that the former Heisman Trophy winner should move to wide receiver is blasphemous, as it's only a matter of time before Jackson's arm is electrifying NFL stadiums on Sundays. - Alex ChippinJosh AllenNo quarterback in this class is perfect - far from it, in fact. All have significant flaws in their respective games that might hold them back from NFL stardom, and Allen is no exception. But the former Wyoming standout's sky-high ceiling due to his otherworldly arm talent can't be dismissed. Just two short years ago, Carson Wentz was the same wildly talented but raw small-school passer in dire need of refinement. And by 2017, he was the favorite to win MVP until a knee injury ended his season prematurely. Allen doesn't have Wentz's pre-snap acumen or elite improvisational skills, but if he lands in a perfect environment, with a coach who can ease him into the responsibilities of an NFL quarterback while utilizing his athleticism and downfield passing abilities, he could surpass his draftmates in a matter of years. Allen is the biggest risk in the NFL draft, but with every great risk, there's an equally great reward. - Jack Browne(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Quarterbacks can finally rest easy, as James Harrison announced his retirement Monday after 15 seasons. One of the standout pass-rushers of his generation, Harrison racked up 84.5 career sacks, made five Pro Bowls, and earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2008.However, while the 39-year-old's longevity must be commended, he only had three 10-plus-sack seasons (2008-10), and it wasn't until five years into his career that he started making a significant impact. So, all things considered, does the two-time Super Bowl winner deserve to have a bust in Canton?Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Philadelphia Eagles announced they have parted ways with cornerback Daryl Worley.Worley's release comes after he was arrested near the Eagles' facility Sunday morning and became combative with a Philadelphia police officer. A gun was recovered at the scene of the incident.Philadelphia acquired the 23-year-old Philadelphia native from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for wide receiver Torrey Smith in March.Worley was the Panthers' third-round selection in the 2016 draft. He accumulated 111 tackles and three interceptions in his first two NFL seasons. The Eagles still have plenty of depth at the cornerback position heading into 2018, with Jalen Mills, Ronald Darby, Sidney Jones, and Rasul Douglas currently atop the depth chart.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will not attend the start of the team's offseason program Monday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Schefter adds Gronkowski is still considering whether to play in the upcoming NFL season, but has had "good communication" with New England.Although Patriots' owner Robert Kraft recently claimed he was unfazed by his star tight end's retirement murmurs, it appears Gronkowski has yet to make a decision regarding his 2018 playing status.Related: Report: Belichick chastised Gronk in 2017 for training at TB12ESPN's Mike Reiss reported the five-time All-Pro has a $250,000 workout bonus in his contract for 2018 that he would receive in the event he attends a certain amount of his team's offseason program.Gronkowski has dealt with numerous significant injuries during his career, leading to retirement rumors after Super Bowl LII.Schefter also confirmed reports that Tom Brady will also not attend the Patriots' first workout Monday. The 4 best landing spots for Lamar Jackson
Lamar Jackson's NFL future has recently been the subject of much speculation. The dual-threat quarterback has a Heisman Trophy on his mantle, yet he's not considered to be among the top-four prospects at his position. The New England Patriots are rumored to have the most interest in Jackson and he received the virtual stamp of approval from Tom Brady on Thursday.Jackson has been projected to go anywhere from a top-10 pick to a second-round draft selection, making any of the 32 teams a possible landing spot for the Louisville star. Some teams are better fits than others, however. The Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and Arizona Cardinals - owners of the No. 11, 12, and 15 overall picks, respectively - have often been linked to Jackson in mock drafts, but they all represent poor fits. The Dolphins and Cards lack the receiving options (aside from an aging Larry Fitzgerald) and desire to implement run-pass-option systems that would allow Jackson to thrive in the NFL. Just look at their recent history with quarterbacks. The Cardinals went from Carson Palmer to Sam Bradford and the Dolphins from Ryan Tannehill to Jay Cutler. The Bills, having jettisoned Tyrod Taylor in favor of AJ McCarron, are very clearly in the market for a more traditional quarterback - one who won't cause fits to opposing defenses and Buffalo's coaching staff.Jackson isn't out of options, however. Here are the four teams best equipped to make him an NFL star.Learn from legendsShould he be drafted by either the Patriots or New Orleans Saints, Jackson would benefit from learning from and taking over for one of the legends of the game. The Pats - owners of the No. 23 and 31 overall picks, and a threat to move up in the draft - are in need of a backup to Brady who can be the successor to his throne. Sitting behind Brady has done wonders for Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett. Jackson could also spend the next couple of seasons under the tutelage of Bill Belichick before becoming Josh McDaniels' franchise quarterback. For all of Jackson's athletic abilities, his game does require some refining, particularly when it comes to footwork and accuracy. There's no better classroom to learn than Belichick's.In New Orleans, Drew Brees was brought back on what is essentially a one-year deal. Again, Jackson could spend his rookie season in an elite apprenticeship program before taking the reins of one of the league's most dangerous offenses.Imagine Jackson in Sean Payton's offensive system with Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara at his disposal. Scary.Best path to starter's roleThe team that offers Jackson the quickest path to the starter's job is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Blake Bortles led the Jags to the 2017 AFC Championship Game and landed a three-year extension in February, but the team hasn't ruled out drafting another quarterback.By pairing Jackson with star rusher Leonard Fournette, the Jaguars' backfield would be set for the foreseeable future. They were given a first-hand account of what a dual-threat talent can do for a franchise when the division-rival Houston Texans flourished with Deshaun Watson under center last year. Jacksonville could follow the same blueprint by pairing an elite defense with a dynamic quarterback.Need + fitThe Los Angeles Chargers have said they're open to using their first-round pick on a quarterback, but the No. 17 overall selection is likely too late a pick to land the likes of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, or Baker Mayfield. It could be the right spot and fit for Jackson, however. What better place to become a star than in L.A.The Chargers have fallen behind the Rams in the "Fight for L.A." and are in desperate need of a talent who could fill the empty seats at the StubHub Center. Philip Rivers is entering his 15th season and has just two years remaining in his contract. Someone will need to fill the void as the face of the franchise and the Chargers have suggested Jackson could be the man for the job."Our scouts, they've watched the whole year. They like him," head coach Anthony Lynn said last month. "The couple games I saw, I think he's a nightmare for a defense. I think he's a good quarterback.""Watching the tape and watching him play, you don't see that very often, a guy that carries his team the way he does, and he does a number of things really well," added general manager Tom Telesco. "But those are the fun ones to watch."Lynn has a history with the likes of Tyrod Taylor, Geno Smith, and Michael Vick, proving he isn't opposed to bringing aboard a player of Jackson's skill set.The 2018 draft is rife with talented quarterbacks. If picked by the right team, Jackson could be the first one to reach stardom.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Bruce Arians: Cardinals should take Lamar Jackson at No. 15 overall
Bruce Arians cultivated a reputation as one of the NFL's top quarterback gurus during his illustrious career, developing the likes of Ben Roethlisberger and Andrew Luck.Unfortunately, the recently-retired Cardinals head coach won't be the man to mold Arizona's next franchise passer. But if he was, he'd select former Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson with the team's first-round pick (15th overall)."That's one guy I really am intrigued with because he can spin it and he's been in a pro-style offense and he's been hard coached by Bobby (Petrino)," Arians said, according to Bob McManaman of azcentral sports. "He brings that unique skill-set, and it makes me look back at Vince Young. Vince could beat you and he was a heck of a leader. I don’t know why it didn’t work out for him, but listening to him now, telling his story, he’s like, ‘I didn’t put the time in.’"I think Lamar puts the time in. He's going to get better, and he just brings that unique ability to break the game open with his legs."The NFL world appears to be split on Jackson's professional future. Some believe he would be best served trying to move to wide receiver due to his otherworldly athleticism, while others think the 2016 Heisman winner is a star in the making in the right system and with some significant development. If selected by the Cardinals, Jackson - who racked up over 4,000 rushing yards in three college seasons - would form one of the most versatile and dynamic backfields in the league with David Johnson.Asked about Jackson and Johnson playing together, Arians likely summed up the feelings of Cardinals fans everywhere."Oh, baby!" he replied.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Eagles' Worley arrested near team facility, gun found at scene
Philadelphia police officers arrested and used a taser on Eagles cornerback Daryl Worley after he became combative near the team facility at 6 a.m. ET Sunday, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.A gun was also recovered at the scene of the incident.Rapoport added that 911 was called to the scene because Worley was found passed out inside a vehicle blocking the highway.“We are in the process of gathering more information about Daryl Worley's arrest this morning," the Eagles said in a brief statement. It's likely, though not certain, the Eagles will release Worley, Les Bowen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.Worley joined the Eagles this offseason in a trade that sent Torrey Smith to the Carolina Panthers. The third-year corner has racked up 152 total tackles, 19 passes defensed, and three interceptions since 2016.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Prescott laments Bryant's release, says he wasn't part of decision
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott doesn't seem enthused about having to find a new favorite target for the upcoming season. After three-time Pro Bowler Dez Bryant was released Friday, Prescott voiced his frustrations about the move Saturday."It's sad news. That's a brother to me," Prescott said to ESPN's Todd Archer. "Put the football stuff behind you and what he meant to me as a person, what he meant to me as a brother, it's tough to see him go. It shows you it's a business. All it does is motivate me and puts all this in perspective. Just got to go to work."Bryant posted three consecutive 1,000-yard plus seasons from 2012-14, establishing himself as one of the league's best red-zone threats during that span. The veteran wide receiver had spent his entire career with the Cowboys after being selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft.Prescott had built a strong rapport with Bryant since his rookie season in 2016, and it's clear that the Cowboys will need to find another playmaker to assuage their quarterback's concerns."He was a great player," Prescott said. "He did a lot of great things for us, obviously. I mean he was a guy in man-to-man (coverage) you go to. So I mean at this point we've got to figure that out with the guys we got, and I'm sure we're going to go after guys in the draft and free agency, who knows? All I can do is continue to get better at my job."Bryant suggested that players who act as the Cowboys' captains played a role in his release, but Prescott - who was a captain along with the likes of Jason Witten and Sean Lee in 2017 - said the decision was way above his pay grade."As much you want to say yeah I want a say so … those guys get paid a lot more than me," Prescott said, according to the Star-Telegram's Clarence E. Hill. "That is what those guys are there to do. That is not my decision."I am sure (Bryant) is hearing stuff. I am sure he is getting it from a lot of different ways. So I am not going to finger point at anybody. I'm not going to get upset about who he is pointing at or who he thinks did this. As I said, it's a business and that's part of it."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

RGIII advises top QB prospects: Don't get caught up in the hype
Recently signed Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Robert Griffin III has some advice for this year's top quarterback prospects vying to be the No. 1 selection on April 26."Everybody wants to be labeled the best quarterback, the best this, the best that," Griffin said, according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN. "I see the guys get caught up in that a little bit. You just want to make sure you don’t. It is important to feel a certain kind of way, but where you get drafted, where you go, is as important as the number behind your name."Griffin was selected by the Washington Redskins with the second pick of the 2012 draft after a much-hyped battle with Andrew Luck (the eventual No. 1 pick) in the pre-draft buildup. He's urging this year's top quarterback grouping of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson to avoid getting swept up in the head-to-head competition and focus on their own games."The advice I would give them, to keep it short and frank, is (if) they are able to play at a high level in college, they can do that in the pros," Griffin said. "Right now, it’s all about what everybody is saying, and you can get caught up in that. Don’t get caught up in that. It’s about playing the game. Play it at a high level and listen to your coach. Know exactly who you are as a player and know that they’re there to make you better."Griffin spent his first four campaigns in Washington - winning Rookie of the Year in 2012 - but was released ahead of the 2016 season after not playing in 2015. He signed with the Cleveland Browns but managed just five games before sustaining another injury, and subsequently took the 2017 term off before joining the Ravens this offseason. The 28-year-old is hoping for better luck for this year's rookie crop."Hopefully, those guys get in a great organization that will take care of them. I want them to succeed and help facilitate that as best as possible. I wish the best for every single one of them," said Griffin.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Penn State's Franklin endorses Barkley for No. 1 pick
The NFL draft is less than two weeks away and there has yet to be a consensus on the top overall pick. If it were up to Penn State's James Franklin, his protege Saquon Barkley would be the first player to take the stage April 26.Barkley completed an electrifying junior season at Penn State, winning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and drew comparisons to Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott throughout the year.Franklin believes that in lieu of an obvious choice at quarterback, Barkley is worthy of the top selection. Barring any trades, the Cleveland Browns will hold the first overall pick."Not only is (Barkley) an impact guy from Day 1, but he’s a guy that I think can be a part of really getting that organization where everybody wants it to be, and you guys are close," Franklin said to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. "I think everybody would agree with that. So you get a few players like this, and then all the sudden the tide turns, and my man John Dorsey’s a genius, and he deserves that. And same thing with (coach) Hue (Jackson). There's nothing I'd like to see better than to see John and Hue get that thing rolling. As we all know, there's a few players that can change college programs and there's a few players that can change NFL organizations for 10 years, and I think he's got a chance to be one of those guys."Barkley set several school records while at Penn State and could become the first running back to go first overall since the Cincinnati Bengals selected Ki-Jana Carter, also out of Penn State, with the top pick in 1995. In two consecutive seasons, a running back has been taken fourth overall, with Elliott going to the Cowboys in 2016, and Leonard Fournette heading to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2017.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. 3 deepest positions in the 2018 NFL Draft
The 2018 NFL Draft promises to be one of the most intriguing in recent memory, even though the overall talent doesn't quite match up with others of the decade. While a number of teams will address their biggest weaknesses early in the draft, others will attempt to extract the most value out of later selections. The 2018 class features a few positions with enough depth for coaches and general managers to target in case their top prospects are off the board. Here are the three deepest positions in this year's class:Wide receiversThis receiver class doesn't feature the star power fans have seen in recent years. You probably won't find Corey Davis, Amari Cooper, or Odell Beckham Jr. here, but there's an incredibly deep pool.Alabama's Calvin Ridley, SMU's Courtland Sutton, and Maryland's D.J. Moore are the consensus top wideout prospects, each with a shot at a first-round selection. What is notable, however, is the number of talented players potentially available on Days 2 and 3. Washington receiver Dante Pettis offers quick feet, fluid hips, and the ability to return punts at a high level. LSU's D.J. Chark has the size and speed most teams covet with pass-catchers. Christian Kirk out of Texas A&M has been pegged as a dangerous slot weapon. Memphis' Anthony Miller and Oklahoma State's James Washington are coming off productive college careers, with the latter leading the NCAA in receiving yards in 2017. Both have shown the ability to consistently separate from opposing cornerbacks. That's just the next tier, though. Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish Equanimeous St. Brown has scouts salivating over his measurables. Daesean Hamilton is a fantastic route-runner wrapping up an illustrious career at Penn State. Colorado State's Michael Gallup is an athletic wideout with good burst and powerful hands who didn't get enough attention playing in the Mountain West. There are at least 10 more players worth mentioning here, so it's easy to conclude the wide receiver position is the deepest in this year's draft.CornerbacksWith dynamic passing offenses evolving in today's NFL, cornerbacks have become incredibly important investments. Luckily, teams have a deep list of prospects to choose from in 2018.Ohio State's Denzel Ward, Louisville's Jaire Alexander, Iowa's Josh Jackson, and UCF's Mike Hughes are squarely in first round contention, with a number of teams high on their collegiate production and coverage skills. While the above quartet is seen as the cream of the crop, there will be a number of talented corners available Friday and Saturday. Isaiah Oliver was a nuisance to college receivers at Colorado, making completions extremely difficult in the Pac-12. Auburn cornerback Carlton Davis possesses ideal measurables and ball skills that defensive coordinators covet. Former LSU Tiger Donte Jackson's blazing speed and change-of-direction abilities make him an ideal slot defender in the pros.On the draft's third day, the likes of Florida's Duke Dawson, North Carolina's M.J. Stewart, Tennessee's Rashaan Gaulden, and Wisconsin's Nick Nelson (despite recently tearing his meniscus) could provide incredible value to a team's secondary.Interior defensive linemenInterior defensive linemen have to be stout run defenders and efficient pass-rushers in today's game. Fortunately for NFL teams, there are a number of draft prospects at the position adept at both. The defensive tackle headliners are well known - Washington's Vita Vea, Michigan's Maurice Hurst, Alabama's Da'Ron Payne, and Florida's Taven Bryan - but there's talent available after these four come off the board. Former Stanford Cardinal Harrison Phillips impressed at the combine while illustrating toughness and versatility on tape. Tim Settle from Virginia Tech offers excellent movement skills for a 330-pound nose tackle. North Carolina State has two solid pass-rushing interior linemen in this year's class - Justin Jones and B.J. Hill. Virginia's Andrew Brown is a big-time sleeper prospect who utilizes good burst and active hands to wreak havoc on opposing linemen. If these names weren't enough, a number of small school prospects may crash the draft day party as well, including Sam Houston State's P.J. Hall, Delaware's Bilal Nichols, and Fort Hays State's Nathan Shepherd. All three offer impressive production and pass-rushing prowess.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Amendola: 'It's not easy' playing for Belichick
After five years with the New England Patriots, Danny Amendola opted for a move within the AFC East and joined the Miami Dolphins this offseason.Amendola was back in the New England area for a charity event on Friday evening and spoke about his highly successful tenure with the Patriots. While he was quick to praise Bill Belichick as the best coach of all time, he also admitted it was very difficult playing under the notoriously strict bench boss."It's not easy, that's for sure. He's an a--h--- sometimes. There were a lot of things I didn't like about playing for him, but I must say, the things I didn't like were all in regards to getting the team better, and I respected him," Amendola told ESPN's Mike Reiss. "I didn't like practicing in the snow. I didn't like practicing in the rain, but that was going to make us a better football team and that was going to make me a better football player."The veteran receiver's final game with the Patriots ended up being the Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in February. It was in that game that Belichick made the curious decision to bench starting cornerback Malcolm Butler, a decision that has never been fully explained and still sticks with Amendola."To tell you the truth, I don't know why," Amendola said. "I did ask, but I didn't get any answers. I can't make decisions like that, so I don't necessarily worry about it, but I know Malcolm is a great player and he could have helped us win. For whatever reason, he wasn't out there."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Report: Redskins, Giants, Eagles not interested in signing Dez Bryant
It appears Dez Bryant's goal of playing against his former team twice in 2018 may be unrealistic. The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants are reportedly not interested in signing the former Dallas Cowboys receiver, while a league source told Yahoo Sports' Jordan Schultz that the Washington Redskins have not discussed Bryant "at all."The three-time Pro Bowl wideout was released Friday, even though he claimed he would've accepted a pay cut if asked. He later appeared on NFL Network to express his frustration with the situation, while saying he hopes to land in the NFC East for the upcoming season.Bryant may have to settle for signing with a team that resides outside of the division to exact revenge on the Cowboys. Landry puts pen to paper on Browns extension: 'Let's be great, Cleveland'
Accompanied by the enthusiasm he hopes will help turn around the franchise's fortunes, wide receiver Jarvis Landry officially signed his contract extension Friday with the Cleveland Browns."I'm excited for the journey with my new teammates and building, one day at a time, starting with the offseason program on Monday," Landry told Andrew Gribble of the team's official website after inking the deal. "Let's be great, Cleveland."The Browns didn't reveal the terms of the contract, but it's reportedly a five-year agreement worth $75.5 million.Landry comes to Cleveland after four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, where he made three Pro Bowls and cemented himself as one of the top possession receivers in the league. He led the NFL in catches a year ago, and was traded to the Browns in March, shortly after receiving the franchise tag from Miami.
Dez blames 'Garrett guys' for release, wants to stay in NFC East
The Dallas Cowboys offered a warm statement about Dez Bryant after releasing the eight-year veteran Friday, but the franchise's all-time leader in receiving touchdowns didn't respond with the same fuzzy feelings."Being in the division is a huge possibility, it's something that I want," Bryant told NFL Network's Jane Slater in a TV interview about his new status as a free agent. "It's personal. I'm tired of being the scapegoat and I'm going to keep proving that on and off the field."Bryant, who said he would've accepted a pay cut if asked to by Dallas, went on a tweeting spree after the news of his release came down. Among the posts that quickly gained traction was one that suggested Bryant was disliked by Dallas' coaches because he called them out much like they often called players out."I asked someone to be a man about things a long time ago and he couldn't," Bryant said in the interview, though he wouldn't identify the person. "I'm not talking about no player. I'm trying my best to sugarcoat it, but I can't."The three-time Pro Bowler added that he believes there are "Garrett guys" - referring to head coach Jason Garrett - in the Cowboys' locker room who worked against him. Among them, he suggested, are some team captains."I won't put no names out, but they know and I want them to know on this air that I know," Bryant said. "I'll shoot them a text message and let them know. Little do they know is, they can wear that 'C' all they want to, but in that locker room, they know who they run and they talk to. They know who they communicate with. Everybody knows where the real love is at. I'm not throwing anybody under the bus, but that's the difference between me and them."Bryant was one of the NFL's most dominant receivers from 2012-14, but looked a step slower last season while putting up 838 yards and six touchdowns across 16 contests.Though he'd like to stay in the division and play against the Cowboys twice a year, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that none of the NFC East clubs have interest in bringing Bryant aboard at the moment.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. 7 unforgettable Dez Bryant moments with Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys cut one of the league's most most recognizable players (for better or worse) on Friday, in wide receiver Dez Bryant.Related: Cowboys release Dez BryantThe 29-year-old has made his mark with the Cowboys and their opponents over his eight years with the team since being chosen with the 24th overall pick of the 2010 draft.Related: NFL players react to Dez Bryant's releaseHere, we look back at the most memorable moments from Bryant's Cowboys tenure.7. 'Fighting' DeAngelo HallBryant has never backed down from opponents who can match him in intensity and personality, particularly the NFC East rivals he faces twice a year. While he never actually made contact with Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall, the two almost came to blows amid a ferocious battle in a Thanksgiving meeting in 2012. Bryant won the individual matchup by catching eight of 11 targets for 145 yards and two touchdowns, but the Redskins came away with a 38-31 victory. The two would-be combatants were later caught on camera showing some camaraderie after the game.6. TD throw to Jason WittenHere's Bryant's career passing line: 1 for 1, with 10 yards and a touchdown. His one and only career pass came in 2016 against the Detroit Lions, in which Byrant took a handoff from quarterback Dak Prescott and rolled to the outside as if to run for the score. He instead pulled up and lobbed a perfect toss to a wide-open Jason Witten for the easy touchdown in a 42-21 Cowboys victory.5. Messing with Odell Beckham Jr.Reportedly close friends, Bryant and Beckham took turns mocking each other in their second career head-to-head game in the latter's 2014 rookie season. After Beckham scored and re-enacted Bryant's trademark 'throw up the X' celebration, Bryant came up with a sprawling touchdown and then imitated Beckham's version of Silento's "Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)" dance. Each receiver scored twice on the day, with Bryant recording 86 yards on seven catches, while Beckham caught 10 of 11 targets for 146 yards. The performances provided Bryant with multiple opportunities and plenty of camera time to continue his imitation.4. Rivalry with Josh NormanThere have been no shortage of hostile interactions between Bryant and Joshn Norman, and even the holidays haven't brought them to peace. The feud dates back to Norman's days with the Carolina Panthers, when meetings were much more scarce.Bryant has also often voiced his displeasure with Norman's five-year, $75-million contract.3. First career TDRemember when Bryant returned punts?Though he hasn't done so since the conclusion of the 2012 season, Bryant returned at least 12 punts in each of his first three seasons, taking two to the house as a rookie. His first came on a spectacular 62-yard return in Week 2 against the Chicago Bears in 2010. It was four weeks later that he scored his first as a receiver on a 31-yard strike.2. Sideline battle with coaches, WittenBryant's frustrations haven't always been reserved for his opponents. His emotions got the better of him in 2013, when a Detroit Lions touchdown with just 12 seconds left on the clock meant Bryant's two-score day was for naught.Even the veteran Witten had a difficult time separating the infuriated Bryant from the coaching staff.1. The non-catchBryant's overturned catch with less than five minutes remaining on the clock in the 2014 NFC Divisional Round against the Green Bay Packers still haunts Cowboys fans. And count Bryant among those who received zero solace in the NFL's Competition Committee ruling this season that Dez did, in fact, catch it.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc.
