Raiders continue puzzling offseason under Gruden with 2018 draft class
It's been an interesting few months in Oakland. The Raiders began their offseason by hiring Jon Gruden as the team's next head coach. Gruden had previously coached the Raiders between 1998-2001, and spent the last eight years as a color analyst on ESPN's Monday Night Football broadcast.Gruden and general manager Reggie McKenzie followed the news up with a number of questionable roster decisions. The Raiders' free-agent haul included Jordy Nelson, Rashaan Melvin, Doug Martin, Tahir Whitehead, Shareece Wright, Marcus Gilchrist, Breno Giacomini, and Kyle Wilber. There's talent in this group, but only Melvin and Whitehead are under 29 years old. The team also cut longtime punter Marquette King in March, and signed cornerback Daryl Worley last week following an arrest as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.Needless to say, Gruden's return to the draft at the helm of the Raiders was an important one. Injecting young talent to his roster was vital for the veteran head coach, but we're not sure he succeeded.Oakland originally held the No. 10 overall selection, but moved down to No. 15, swapping picks with the Arizona Cardinals. Gruden and Co. did well to receive additional picks, but later selected UCLA offensive tackle Kolton Miller.Miller may end up having a successful NFL career, but the Raiders reached on their first pick, big time. The towering lineman did not appear on NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah's list of Top 50 2018 players, and was Mike Mayock's 31st-ranked prospect. The team had a need at offensive tackle, but there were far superior prospects on the board, including Derwin James, Tremaine Edmunds, Jaire Alexander, and Isaiah Wynn.Miller has ideal size and athletic traits, but it'll take a great deal of coaching to correct his technical deficiencies. His bust potential is among the highest in this year's first round.Related: NFL Draft Grades - AFC West: Broncos nail it, Gruden's 1st draft a mixed bagDay 2 wasn't much better for the Raiders. With a number of high-level prospects on the board, the team drafted defensive tackle P.J. Hall (Sam Houston State) and offensive tackle Brandon Parker (North Carolina A&T) in the second and third rounds, respectively. Similar to Miller, both players possess athletic upside, but both hail from FCS programs, and are seen as raw prospects that could flame out quickly.Oakland also selected polarizing defensive end Arden Key in the third round. Many expected Key to land on the draft's third day due to multiple off-field concerns, which include leaving LSU before the 2017 season, and entering rehab for a marijuana problem. The Raiders took a massive risk here. And it's not as if the edge-rusher was a blue-chip prospect anyway, as Key tested poorly at the NFL combine, and was inconsistent on tape last season. On Day 3, the Raiders selected cornerback Nick Nelson and defensive tackle Maurice Hurst with their first-two picks. Nelson tore his meniscus during a pre-draft visit with the Detroit Lions. He should be healthy for the 2018 season, but drafting a cornerback with knee injury history can be troublesome. As for Hurst, the interior defender had incredible tape and production at Michigan, but a number of NFL teams took him off their boards after he was diagnosed with a heart condition. Hurst could end up as one of the draft's top steals, but could easily be out of the league in short order. At least, for the Raiders, the risk is minimal here as a fifth-rounder.Oakland's 2018 draft class is the final feather in a puzzling offseason hat under Gruden and McKenzie. With a number of risky selections coupled with multiple head-scratching free-agent signings, Gruden's second tenure with the Raiders may end up shorter than his first.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: ESPN offering Witten over $4M to join Monday Night Football booth
As Jason Witten ponders whether to return to the Dallas Cowboys or join a network broadcast booth, details have emerged on what his potential salary would be on ESPN's "Monday Night Football."Sources told David Moore of The Dallas Morning News that ESPN would pay Witten in the neighborhood of $4 million to $4.5 million per season, significantly more than he would make as a member of the Cowboys in 2018.The veteran tight end is set to earn a base salary of $1.05 million from the Cowboys with a potential of up to $750,000 in per-game roster bonuses should he play the 2018 campaign. While $4 million is a significant sum, it's much less than Jon Gruden made in the ESPN booth before leaving for the Oakland Raiders. Gruden spent nine years broadcasting on Monday nights and earned over $6 million per season.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Steelers GM: Rudolph 'certainly' part of draft's top QB group
Mason Rudolph, projected by some to be a late first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, had to wait until the third round to hear his name called by the Pittsburgh Steelers, well after his fellow top quarterbacks came off the board in the opening round. However, Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert believes Rudolph deserved his place alongside Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, and Lamar Jackson."He was with the group of the top quarterbacks," Colbert said this weekend, according to Lauren Kirschman of PennLive.com. "That was a really good position. That's very unique to the draft. It usually doesn't come through with a nice group like that."Rudolph will sit behind Ben Roethlisberger for the foreseeable future, giving him time to work on the areas of his game that likely led to his draft fall; namely, mechanical issues that limit the velocity on his pass and his throwing skills when outside the pocket.Four quarterbacks were taken in the top 10 for the first time in NFL history, while Jackson made it five in the first round when the Baltimore Ravens traded up to No. 32 overall."We haven't had that much depth at the top of the draft at (quarterback) in a long time," Colbert said. "Mason was certainly a part of that group, in our opinion."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Raiders' Penn, wife deny physical altercation after domestic violence report
After Donald Penn was named as a suspect in a domestic violence incident involving his wife, the pair issued a joint statement denying there was any physical altercation.Law enforcement sources told TMZ Sports police were called to the home of the Oakland Raiders offensive lineman Sunday night. The report alleges Penn slapped his wife's backside, grabbed her by the wrist, and poured a drink over her head during an argument. He was apparently no longer at his home by the time police arrived.Penn and his wife, Dominique, have since responded to that report, issuing a statement saying there was no physical altercation.
Eagles' Roseman on ex-rugby star Mailata: 'We're molding a piece of clay'
One of the more interesting selections in this year's NFL draft came on Day 3, when the Philadelphia Eagles traded up in the seventh round to select former rugby player Jordan Mailata.Mailata, who has never played football, stands 6-foot-8 and weighs 345 pounds. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman believed it was a "strange" scenario trading future picks to select the towering Australian, but knew it was a unique opportunity."He's a fascinating prospect," Roseman told MMQB's Peter King. "With a lot of these guys, you can see what they're going to be. With this guy, we don't know his floor, and we don't know his ceiling. With this guy, we're molding a piece of clay."Roseman and his staff were clearly fascinated by the athletic potential of Mailata, who will begin his NFL career as an offensive tackle."Our line coach, Jeff Stoutland, went to his workout and came back raving about his work ethic and his athletic ability," Roseman said. "We saw this guy had rare athleticism and was physical and violent. Traits of that body type and that athleticism are hard to find. We understand it'll be a process. He's 21."It's easy to question why Philadelphia used a draft pick to select Mailata instead of attempting to sign him as an undrafted free agent, but the Super Bowl-winning executive did not want to risk losing him to another club."We'd be kicking ourselves if we lost out on him because of a seven," he said. "He's with us now, and if he fails, we can sleep at night. We had 11 picks for next year, so we felt it was something we could afford to do."The last Australian rugby player to try his hand at an NFL career was Jarryd Hayne, who was signed by the San Francisco 49ers in 2015. Hayne warned Mailata on the difficulties of learning an NFL playbook."You can go into the NFL and understand a little bit of what you're going to learn, but until you sit down in a room and see the playbook, the defensive schemes, it just blows your mind," Hayne told Hayley Byrnes of NRL.com. "I went in there with some idea, like 'oh yeah, I kind of get it' but not only do you have to learn all the schemes, but you also change them every week."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bills' GM Beane champions QB Allen, disagrees with 'raw' label
When the Buffalo Bills traded up to select Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen, a number of evaluators questioned the decision based on Allen's collegiate production. It doesn't seem to bother general manager Brandon Beane.Appearing on WGR-AM 550 in Buffalo, Beane said he disputes the idea Allen is a raw prospect, saying he does not agree with "so-called labels" that "national gurus" place on quarterbacks, according to ESPN's Mike Rodak.Beane added the first-round signal-caller "was that team" at Wyoming, and "there was no way he was going to beat Iowa or Oregon with that team."Allen also made headlines during draft week when a series of offensive tweets he sent from 2012 and 2013 were uncovered. Despite this, Beane remains confident his quarterback is not that type of person. The general manager said the decision to draft Allen was his, but he had input from owners Terry and Kim Pegula on whether he "fit the culture."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Future stars: The top 25 prospects for the 2019 NFL Draft
The 2018 NFL Draft may have finished just two days ago, but in true Bill Belichick fashion, we're looking ahead to 2019.As teams focus on the upcoming season, the scouting departments remain zoned in on the college ranks to find the next big thing. While the 2018 draft was loaded with quarterbacks, it is defensive line prospects that represent an embarrassment of riches for next year's event. Here are the early top 25 prospects for the 2019 draft.1. DE Nick Bosa - Ohio StateThe younger brother of Joey Bosa might be even better than the prolific Chargers star - quite a statement considering the elder Bosa has 23 sacks through two NFL seasons. The only question is whether Nick can go before his sibling, who was taken third overall in 2016.2. DT Ed Oliver - HoustonIf you like Ndamukong Suh then you're gonna love Oliver, as the Houston defensive tackle possesses the same game-breaking abilities as the NFL standout.3. DT Dexter Lawrence - ClemsonLawrence benefits from playing on a stacked defensive line at Clemson but is an absolute menace on the interior who ruins the opposing offensive line in both run and pass protection.4. OT Jonah Williams - AlabamaThe 6-foot-5, 301-pound Williams has been a star for Alabama since stepping on campus for the 2016 campaign. The best offensive lineman in the draft will immediately be the anchor wherever he ends up.5. DT Rashan Gary - Michigan
Report: Cowboys' Garrett trying to convince Witten to play 2018 season
It's hard to imagine the modern Dallas Cowboys without tight end Jason Witten, and head coach Jason Garrett is doing his best to make sure it stays that way.Witten is actively contemplating retirement and is considering joining the Monday Night Football broadcast team, but Garrett is attempting to persuade the 11-time Pro Bowler to suit up for the 2018 season, a team source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters Friday that Witten hadn't made a final decision on retirement.Witten's production has waned over the last five seasons but he's still a decent pass-catcher, recording 63 receptions for 560 yards and five touchdowns in 2017. Browns' Jackson raves about Mayfield's football IQ, leadership
Although it took some time for Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson to become enamored with Baker Mayfield, he's certainly glad his team took the Heisman winner first overall.Mayfield wasn't considered a consensus top pick and many believed the Browns would take either Sam Darnold or Josh Allen with the first selection. Darnold ultimately went to the New York Jets, while Allen landed with the Buffalo Bills.Although Tyrod Taylor was confirmed as the Browns' starting quarterback, Jackson was full of praise for his newest protege."Baker Mayfield is, from a football IQ standpoint, is as good as I've been around,'' Jackson said, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com "He has a tremendous arm talent, more so than I think anybody knows. Obviously he's proven he's very accurate with the football and I really think he's a tremendous leader, so he really has a lot of qualities that we look for and I think it's now somewhat coming out that a lot of people had him as their best quarterback so we're very excited to have him and very glad that he's going to be here in this organization.''Related: Browns' Jackson reiterates Taylor is starter, but says Mayfield will competeJackson became convinced of Mayfield's potential when he flew to Oklahoma to watch him work out and throw passes."Working him out and spending that time in Norman and watching him with his teammates and how he throws the football (convinced me),'' Jackson said. "The football jumps off his arm. He has a quick arm, he's very accurate with the ball, and from there, then obviously spending some more time when he came here."Jackson's career could be tied to how well Mayfield performs, so his evaluation of his new quarterback may have to come to fruition.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ex-Lions president Millen battling rare disease, could require heart transplant
Former Detroit Lions team president Matt Millen is suffering from amyloidosis, a rare disease that could force him to seek a heart transplant.Millen told The Morning Call of Allentown, Pa. that his heart is currently working at about 30 percent of capacity, and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments once a week for the past eight months.Amyloidosis occurs when amyloid, an abnormal protein, builds up in bone marrow and ends up in tissue or organs. As the disease progresses, the amyloid can alter the healthy tissue it is near, resulting in organ failure.Despite his diagnosis, the former NFL executive intends on staying positive throughout his treatment."I've always lived this way (positively)," Millen told the newspaper. "You take what you get. I look over my life, and it's been a storybook. I have an awesome family, a phenomenal wife, and you can't ask for more."Millen was a four-time Super Bowl champion with the Oakland Raiders (twice), San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Redskins. After retiring, he was hired as a color commentator on NFL games before the Lions hired him in 2001 as the team's president and general manager. Report: Ravens considered drafting Lamar Jackson at No. 16
The Ravens found their potential next franchise quarterback right at the end of the first round but were tempted to jump on Lamar Jackson far earlier. The Ravens considered selecting the 2017 Heisman winner at their original first-round draft slot, No. 16 overall, before instead opting to trade back twice and eventually adding tight end Hayden Hurst at No. 25, sources told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.Baltimore traded two second-rounders (one in 2019) and swapped fourth-rounders to move back into the first for Jackson, in what was longtime general manager Ozzie Newsome's final draft. The Ravens confirmed that Joe Flacco remains the starting quarterback, with Jackson likely to redshirt his rookie season as he continues to refine himself as a passer.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Winners and losers from the 2018 NFL Draft
The 2018 NFL Draft was certainly among the most-hyped in the history of the event and, after three action-packed days, it's safe to say it did not disappoint. With all seven rounds now in the books, let's evaluate which teams and individuals benefited most, and who received our lowest marks.WinnersBaker MayfieldMayfield's climb to the top-overall selection was unique, and the former Oklahoma Sooner also finds himself in a (surprisingly) good scenario with the Cleveland Browns.General manager John Dorsey had already added a number of offensive weapons, including trading for Jarvis Landry and signing Carlos Hyde. After drafting Mayfield, he continued the trend, adding offensive lineman Austin Corbett, running back Nick Chubb, and receiver Antonio Callaway. With Josh Gordon, Duke Johnson, and 2017 first-round pick David Njoku already on the roster, there will be few excuses for Mayfield to succeed once he sees the field. - AlessandriniArizona CardinalsLooking to build an exciting future for new head coach Steve Wilks, the Cardinals traded up for quarterback Josh Rosen in the first round, moving up five spots by surrendering just a third- and fifth-round pick (in addition to their 2018 first-rounder).Arizona also added impressive slot receiver Christian Kirk in the second round and potential Week 1 starting center Mason Cole in the third, clearly prioritizing its new quarterback. With the team already boasting a strong running game led by David Johnson, most pieces are in place for Rosen to succeed. This is how a roster should be built. - AlessandriniGreen Bay PackersAs long as Aaron Rodgers is dressed in Packer green, the offense is going to be among the league's best. Operating under that assumption, new general manager Brian Gutekunst focused on the defensive side of the ball, snagging Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson, two of the top corners on the board, in the first two rounds to strengthen the secondary.Perhaps Gutekunst's best move was trading back in the first round with the New Orleans Saints to get the Packers an extra first-round pick for next year. When you also add the fact Green Bay gave Rodgers another weapon with receiver Equanimeous St. Brown in the sixth round, it's safe to say the Packers are winners. - BelbeckAndrew LuckPrior to Luck missing last season due to shoulder surgery, the star quarterback took a pounding on an annual basis as the Colts' offensive leader. As Luck works diligently to return, the club added a couple bodyguards to ensure his safety for the 2018 campaign: offensive linemen Quenton Nelson and Braden Smith in the opening two rounds.
Colts GM confirms 2017 Luck trade offers; doesn't want move 'on my resume'
Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard confirmed Saturday he turned down multiple trade offers for Andrew Luck at last season's trade deadline, prior to the team placing the quarterback on injured reserve due to a lingering shoulder problem.Colts owner Jim Irsay hinted earlier Saturday the team had "unprecedented offers" on the table for Luck, but Ballard said he had no interest in being the man who shipped off the franchise pivot, regardless of the price."Look, we had some calls last year at the trade deadline," Ballard said, according to Andrew Walker of the team's official website. "And I just - come on man. I'm not taking those seriously."We're not trading Andrew Luck. I'm not putting that on my resume."Luck has yet to be cleared to resume throwing following a major setback in November, though he participated in a limited capacity in voluntary veteran minicamp last week. However, Irsay again emphasized the team is certain Luck will be ready for the start of the 2018 campaign.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Raiders' McKenzie jokes about KC drafting his son: How can he wear a Chiefs helmet?
Having your son get drafted by an NFL team is a special feeling. However, having your son drafted by a bitter division rival will lead to some uncomfortable dinner conversations.Kahlil McKenzie, son of Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, was drafted in the sixth round Saturday by the Kansas City Chiefs - a scenario most fathers don't have to endure."A lot going through my mind still," Reggie told reporters Saturday, via The Mercury News' Matt Schneidman. "I'm proud of him. And I told him that. I told him if we take you, we're gonna put you on the offensive line too and so I see what coach Reid's thought process is."Though, one former Raider has a different opinion on the matter."I got a text from Charles Woodson who told me 'your son has to retire, there's no way he can put that red helmet on his head,'" McKenzie said. "Part of me felt that way, but in all seriousness it's a good opportunity for him and I was hoping that he would land at a spot that will kind of grow him to that position."Woodson was drafted by the Raiders in 1998, and spent 11 of his 18 NFL seasons with Silver and Black.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Falcons GM dismisses concerns about Jones' social media, missed workouts
Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff dismissed concerns surrounding Julio Jones and his use of social media after the draft concluded on Saturday.Jones recently deleted photos of the Falcons from his Instagram feed, prompting some to believe that there is discord between the superstar and the team. He also skipped voluntary offseason workouts, instead electing to workout with Terrell Owens, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer."Julio and the organization are doing very well,'' Dimitroff said to ESPN's Vaughn McClure. "I'm not concerned one bit about any of the social media. I think we're in a great spot. He had very good discussions with (head coach) Dan (Quinn). And we're in a great spot.''Dimitroff noted that the Falcons' offseason program is voluntary and said he's comfortable with the receiver's status.Jones is one of the preeminent talents in the NFL, recording 88 receptions for 1,444 yards and three touchdowns last season.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Here's the Patriots' final haul from the Garoppolo trade
Admit it: You thought the New England Patriots traded quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers last year for one single draft pick.Well, you were kind of right, but also kind of wrong. See, instead of simply using the second-rounder it obtained for Garoppolo, New England went on a trading spree at the 2018 NFL Draft, turning the pick into a never-ending stream of selections.Let's start at the beginning: The original Patriots-49ers deal midway through the 2017 campaign saw Garoppolo head out west for a second-round pick that became the 43rd overall selection. To 49ersTo PatriotsQB Jimmy GaroppoloNo. 43 pickRather than choosing a player with the 43rd pick, though, New England swung a deal with the Detroit Lions. To LionsTo PatriotsNo. 43 pickNo. 51 pickNo. 117 pickThe Patriots then sent the No. 51 pick they received from the Lions over to the Chicago Bears for another pair of selections. To BearsTo PatriotsNo. 51 pickNo. 105 pick2019 2nd-round pickThe other pick from the Lions - No. 117 - was later sent to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as part of a trade the Patriots made to move up in the second round to select Florida cornerback Duke Dawson. To BuccaneersTo PatriotsNo. 63 pickNo. 56 pick (CB Duke Dawson)No. 117 pickIn the fourth round, the Patriots traded the 105th pick it received from the Bears to the Cleveland Browns for two more choices - a fourth-rounder and a sixth-rounder that was spent on Arizona State linebacker Christian Sam.To BrownsTo PatriotsNo. 105 pickNo. 114 pickNo. 178 pick (LB Christian Sam)The first of those picks - No. 114 - was traded to the Lions for a third-rounder next year.To LionsTo PatriotsNo. 114 pick2019 3rd-round pickSo, to recap, the Patriots turned Garoppolo into two players and two future draft picks that - knowing Bill Belichick and the Patriots - will probably be traded for even more picks next year.To 49ersTo PatriotsQB Jimmy GaroppoloCB Duke DawsonLB Christian Sam2019 2nd-round pick2019 3rd-round pickCopyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cowboys deal Ryan Switzer to Raiders for Jihad Ward
The Oakland Raiders added more talent to the receiver room on Saturday as the club acquired Ryan Switzer from the Dallas Cowboys for defensive tackle Jihad Ward. The move, which was announced during the NFL draft broadcast, is the latest deal the Raiders have made to add talent to the passing game for quarterback Derek Carr.New coach Jon Gruden already added Martavis Bryant from the Pittsburgh Steelers in a trade during the draft, and the club selected Oklahoma State standout Marcell Ateman in the seventh round.Switzer saw limited time with the Cowboys during his rookie campaign, but did catch four passes for 32 yards in the season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.Ward, who was the 44th overall pick of the 2016 draft, never really developed at the defensive tackle spot for the Raiders and will look for a fresh start in Dallas.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Irsay hints Colts received trade inquiries for Luck
While Andrew Luck's playing future remains a significant question mark as he continues to rehab from January 2017 shoulder surgery, teams apparently still wanted to test whether the Indianapolis Colts were open to moving their franchise player.Colts owner Jim Irsay hinted Saturday that his team received multiple trade inquiries for the star quarterback, though he refused to go into detail about the offers."Trust me, there were people that would've given an unprecedented amount of draft picks, all with a No. 1 (pick) behind them, for him, and we wouldn't even think of drifting in that direction," Irsay said, according to Zak Keefer of Indy Star. "He's our guy. We feel 100 percent confident that he is going to come back and lead this football team with some of the new teammates he's accumulated to great things.""I won't go any deeper in that," he added. "We won't open our doors on that. Let's just say that I think the rest of the league is anticipating him to return and play great."Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported shortly after Irsay's comment that the inquiry for Luck came about a year ago, but the Colts "laughed at them and did not consider it."The 28-year-old missed the entire 2017 campaign after an offseason of constant optimism from the Colts' higher-ups. Irsay said he's certain Luck will return in 2018, but acknowledged that people will still have their doubts until No. 12 steps back onto an NFL field."I know you guys are saying, 'Jim, are you sure?' Yes, I'm sure," he said.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Patriots finally grab QB with Danny Etling in Round 7
The New England Patriots have selected quarterback Danny Etling out of LSU with the 219th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Many pundits thought the Patriots would grab a quarterback earlier in the draft process but Bill Belichick opted to wait until the seventh round and give Etling a shot.Etling will add quarterback depth behind Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer, but his limited production in college suggests that is the highest he will get in the professional ranks.Danny Etling BioPosition: QB
Just their type: Patriots add prototypical slot man in Braxton Berrios
The New England Patriots have selected wide receiver Braxton Berrios out of Miami in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, 210th overall. The pick elicited playful mockery on Twitter because Berrios is exactly the sort of player the Patriots always target.Bill Belichick certainly does seem to have a type. He's small, gritty, and a reliable receiving option in the slot.Unsurprisingly, Berrios is already drawing comparisons to Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, and Danny Amendola.Braxton Berrios BioPosition: WR

Browns' Jackson reiterates Taylor is starter, but says Mayfield will compete
Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said once again Saturday that Tyrod Taylor is his starter for the 2018 campaign, but left the door open for the possibility of Baker Mayfield earning the job in camp."Tyrod is the starter. Baker is gonna compete," Jackson said, according to Zac Jackson of The Athletic. "However that unfolds, that unfolds. But we have a plan."Prior to the draft, Jackson said Taylor would be the starter regardless of whom the Browns selected with the No. 1 overall pick. However, Mayfield is arguably more pro-ready than the other two quarterbacks Cleveland was considering - Sam Darnold and Josh Allen - and the Browns appear to be open to starting him early if he's ready."You have to let the tape tell the story. His football I.Q. is as high as any I've been around," Jackson said, according to Jeff Schudel of The News-Herald.Jackson lauded Mayfield for his fiery competitiveness, comparing him to one of the best quarterback leaders in the game."When I think of Philip Rivers, that's what it is," Jackson said, according to Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. "They're trying to beat you every chance you get.''Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Los Angeles Rams traded wide receiver Tavon Austin to the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday for a sixth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Cowboys have a glaring need at wide receiver, but plan to use the speedster as a running back, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Austin was selected eighth overall in the 2013 draft, but hasn't lived up to his potential coming out of West Virginia. He had his most productive season in 2016, when he posted 509 yards and three touchdowns receiving while contributing on special teams as a returner. The 28-year-old was essentially phased out of the Rams' offense under coach Sean McVay, as he recorded a meager 13 receptions for 47 yards in 2017.The trade gives the Rams a whopping seven picks in the sixth round.Austin was expected to be released by the Rams earlier in the offseason, but he stuck on the roster after agreeing to restructure his contract. The veterans are slated to make a combined $22.9 million next season, and the club has an out on both of their contracts after the 2018 campaign. At 6-foot-3 and 218 pounds, Sutton would be a natural replacement for the 30-year-old Thomas. Hamilton's precise route-running skills, meanwhile, would make for an excellent No. 2 option in the future, taking the place of the 31-year-old Sanders.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc.
