Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott says that he will evaluate who will start at quarterback for his team next week after Nathan Peterman had a dismal debut Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. After throwing five interceptions, Peterman was replaced in the second half by Tyrod Taylor, who had lost his starting job earlier in the week.McDermott did not call his decision to start Peterman over Taylor a mistake, however he expressed that the 54-24 loss certainly was not in the plans."I don't regret my decision. I regret the result," McDermott told reporters after the game. "This is in part about winning now and in part about winning in the future."This game got away from us in a hurry ... All teams go through a tough stretch. We have to manage this downturn, stay mentally tough, and make corrections going forward."Taylor finished the game with 158 passing yards, 38 rushing yards and two total touchdowns, though the game was out of hand before he got to play. The Bills face the Kansas City Chiefs on the road next week.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. MEXICO CITY (AP) Tom Brady felt right at home in his first appearance in Mexico by throwing for 339 yards and three touchdowns, to the delight of an adoring crowd, in the New England Patriots' 33-8 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday.Brady completed his first 12 passes and picked apart Oakland's suspect defense to chants of ''Brady! Brady!'' from an amped-up crowd at Azteca Stadium. The large contingent of Patriots fans in the well-divided crowd for a Raiders ''home'' game had plenty to cheer about as New England (8-2) dominated from start to finish. After winning their debut trip to Mexico City last year against Houston, the Raiders (4-6) were completely overmatched in their return. The offense failed to score until Derek Carr threw a TD pass to Amari Cooper in the fourth quarter with Oakland trailing by 30 points. The defense got victimized by short passes by Brady and then beaten on a 64-yard TD to Brandin Cooks on the third play of the second half that gave New England a 24-0 lead. There was a festive environment at the famed stadium, with loud cheers for both teams from the crowd of 77,357 fans and a notable buzz throughout the early portions. Much was made heading to the game about the differing approaches to playing in an elevation of 7,200 feet above sea level. The Patriots spent the week at the Air Force Academy practicing at an elevation of 6,621 feet, while the Raiders stayed home and opted to limit their time at high altitude. In a game this lopsided it probably didn't play much of a factor, although it was the Patriots who had two players leave because of dehydration in the second half with receiver Danny Amendola and cornerback Stephon Gilmore being sidelined for brief stretches. The thin air might have helped Stephen Gostkowski set a New England record with a 62-yard field goal at the end of the first half that was tied for the sixth-longest field goal in NFL history. Two of the five longer kicks, including Matt Prater's record 64-yarder in 2014, were also done at high elevation in Denver. Gostkowski added three field goals in the second half.FAST STARTBrady went 9 for 9 on the opening drive for New England as the Patriots used an up-tempo offense and short passes to keep the Raiders on their heels. He capped it with a 15-yard pass to Dion Lewis to take a 7-0 lead. Brady added a 5-yard TD pass to Amendola midway through the second quarter.MOMENTUM CHANGERThe Raiders appeared in position to score late in the first half before Marquis Flowers knocked the ball out of Seth Roberts' hands inside the 5. Patrick Chung recovered with 33 seconds left at the New England 7. The Patriots managed to move 48 yards in four plays and ended the half with Gostkowski's long kick. The Patriots have now scored in the final minute of the first half in seven straight games.INTERNATIONAL MILESTONEBrady became the first quarterback with 300-yard games in three countries, having also done it twice in London and 79 times in the United States.INJURIESRaiders WR Johnny Holton left to be evaluated for a concussion after getting hurt on a deep pass that bounced off his shoulder pads for an interception by Duron Harmon . Holton returned in the second half and was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.UP NEXTPatriots: Host Miami on Sunday.Raiders: Host Denver on Sunday.---More AP NFL: pro32.ap.org and twitter.com/AP-NFLCopyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Alex Smith needs to lose his starting job partway through a season for the second time in his career. The Kansas City Chiefs, once safely atop the AFC as the NFL's last undefeated team at 5-0, need to follow the mold of the 2012 San Francisco 49ers and remove Smith as the starter, in place of a younger, more dynamic option under center. The 49ers started the 2012 season 6-2 with Smith under center. When he suffered an injury early in a Week 10 game against the St. Louis Rams, they were forced to turn to sophomore Colin Kaepernick, a second-round pick the year prior.Kaepernick led his team to a tie against the Rams, and then started the final seven games of the regular season, going 5-2 and keeping hold of the job upon Smith's return to health. He'd take the 49ers to the Super Bowl, and Smith would be traded to the Chiefs in the offseason.Smith had appeared to change his persona to start the 2017 season. The well-known "game manager" - with a career completion percentage of 62.3 and yards per attempt of 6.88 - opened the season with a 368-yard, four-touchdown road performance against the Super Bowl-champion New England Patriots. He maintains a career-best 8.34 yards per attempt, but it's been trending in the wrong direction. An embarrassing Week 11 loss to the previously 1-8 New York Giants, in the week following their bye, showed the Chiefs have accomplished all they can with Smith at the controls. The disastrous performance caps their current 1-4 stretch, dropping them to a record of 6-4 - though still in control of the underperforming AFC West.As with the 49ers in 2012, the Chiefs have an otherwise strong team. Rookie running back Kareem Hunt entered Week 11 with the second-most rushing yards in the league at 800. And tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver Tyreek Hill ranked 12th and 15th, respectively, in receiving yards. While Smith has been a large contributor to those statistical rankings, he has recently reverted to the player he always was. A safe option, capable of leading teams to quality records, but without the game-changing abilities needed to make a team a true contender. He's relied heavily on his top three pass-catchers to make plays after the catch. Hunt, Hill, and Kelce rank 10th, T-13, and T-16, respectively, in yards after the catch. As with the 49ers five years earlier, the Chiefs have their quarterback of the future waiting in the wings. They shipped first- and third-round picks in 2017, and a first-round pick in 2018 to the Buffalo Bills to move up from the 27th pick to the 10th, and selected Mahomes as the second quarterback in the draft.Mahomes impressed in the preseason, completing 63 percent of 54 pass attempts over four games, throwing four touchdowns and no interceptions. He averaged 7.2 yards per attempt. Now with 10 games of tutelage under Smith, Mahomes is the superior choice to lead the high-profile aerial attack head coach Andy Reid was trying to implement at the start of the season.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. The fact that Colin Kaepernick isn't in the NFL, despite so many quarterbacks with worse resumes being employed instead, does not add up for Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James.James firmly believes that Kaepernick, who holds a career passer rating of 88.9, is easily an NFL-caliber player that is being blackballed for his beliefs."I love football, but I'm not part of the NFL," James told ESPN's Dave McMenamin. "I don't represent the NFL. I don't know their rules and regulations. But I do know Kap is getting a wrong doing, I do know that."Just watching, he's an NFL player. He's an NFL player and you see all these other quarterbacks out there and players out there that get all these second and third chances that are nowhere near as talented as him. It just feels like he's been blackballed out of the NFL. So, I definitely do not respect that."Since opting out of his contract last March, a total of 42 quarterbacks have been signed while Kaepernick waits, according to a study by Martenzie Johnson of The Undefeated. Some of those accomplished luminaries include David Fales, Matt McGloin, and Brandon Weeden. So why isn't he in the league? James points out the obvious with Kaepernick's protest against police brutality and the systematic oppression of people of color in America."The only reason I could say he's not on a team is because the way he took a knee. That's the only reason. I watch football every Sunday, every Thursday, every Monday night," James said."I see all these quarterbacks - first-string, second-team, third-team quarterbacks - that play sometimes when the starter gets hurt or are starters that play. Kap is better than a lot of those guys. Let's just be honest."James, another socially conscious athlete who uses his platform to affect change, compared Kaepernick's activism to the likes of Martin Luther King Jr. and Muhammad Ali."I've commended Kap, and for him to sacrifice everything for the greater good for everyone, for what he truly believed in, the utmost respect to him. Obviously he had a vision like Martin Luther King and like some of our all-time greats that people couldn't see further than what they were doing at the point and time. And Muhammad Ali and things of that nature," James said."When it's something that's new and it's something that people are not educated about or don't understand what your beliefs are all about, people are so quick to judge and people are so quick to say that what you're doing is wrong."For him to sacrifice the sport that he plays and to sacrifice the things he's done his whole life because he knew what he believed in, I salute him. I salute and respect that."Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams are the perfect representations of a paradoxical 2017 season.Head coaches Mike Zimmer and Sean McVay have turned teams that missed the playoffs in 2016 into division leaders through the first 10 weeks. The Rams lead the league in points per game and rank third in points against, while the Vikings allow fewer yards per game and points than all but four teams, and rank 10th in average points scored.Zimmer has helped turn Case Keenum - a Rams castoff - into a legitimate starting quarterback. Meanwhile, McVay has resurrected the young career of former Keenum predecessor Jared Goff, the league's seventh-best quarterback in terms of passer rating.Goff was ridiculed throughout the 2016 season after being selected by the Rams with the No. 1 overall pick. He served as Keenum's backup for much of his rookie year (occasionally as the third-string option) and completed just 54.6 percent of his passes in seven appearances, throwing five touchdowns against seven interceptions. In his first year with the rookie head coach McVay, he's completing 61.2 percent of his passes at 8.49 yards per attempt with 16 touchdowns and four picks. He owns a passer rating of 101.5 - up nearly 40 points from his catastrophic rookie season.Despite a league-wide need for quarterbacks - both backups and starters - teams weren't lining up to sign Keenum as a free agent this past offseason. This allowed the Vikings to steal him on a one-year, $2-million contract to serve as the backup for Game 1 starter Sam Bradford. When Bradford fell to a knee injury, Keenum was inserted as a placeholder until Teddy Bridgewater returned from the physically unable to perform list. With Bridgewater active and on the sideline, Keenum is coming off one of his best games of the season under Zimmer in Week 10, completing 21 of 29 passes with four touchdowns against the Washington Redskins. He remains the starter for at least Week 11.Both the Rams and Vikings have gotten the most out of strong receiving groups. The Vikings' top duo of Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs rank third and T-27, respectively, in receiving yards. The Rams have used a trio of new additions in Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, and rookie Cooper Kupp, providing Goff with a variety of weapons. On the ground, the Vikings lost rookie running back Dalvin Cook - their second-round pick in the 2017 draft - after just four games. Zimmer had to reinsert fourth-year running back Jerick McKinnon as the primary ball-carrier over an inefficient Latavius Murray. McKinnon's playing at the highest level of his career behind an improved offensive line.McVay has taken advantage of the talent of third-year back Todd Gurley, who ranks fourth in rushing yards and shares the league lead in scores on the ground.Credit is due to Doug Pederson of the 8-1 Philadelphia Eagles, Doug Marrone of the AFC South-leading Jacksonville Jaguars, and Sean Payton of the NFC South-leading New Orleans Saints, but it's McVay and Zimmer who have overcome more obstacles, with less help, to turn their teams into legitimate contenders. The winner of their marquee Week 11 matchup will help one team strengthen its grip on an unlikely division lead, and could give voters enough confidence to pencil in their Coach of the Year selection early.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson believes he's being taken advantage of by force after being fined $18,231 for a hit on Arizona Cardinals quarterback Drew Stanton during a Nov. 9 win.Richardson plans to appeal the fine and expressed his disgust in no uncertain terms Friday."It’s kind of just extortion really," Richardson said, via Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. “Guy pushes you in the back and trips you on the play and you are catching your balance the whole time and then you just happen, I don’t know. They said ‘avoid him,’ but he still has the ball. It’s like what do you do?"Richardson said he had no intention of hitting Stanton low. Stanton suffered a sprained knee and Blaine Gabbert will start Sunday against the Houston Texans as a result."There is no way you should be taking any of my money because it wasn’t a dirty hit,’’ Richardson said. “I didn’t try to hit him in the legs or nothing and once again people fail to realize it’s still football. Pretty sure they are just fining guys for every personal foul and not even looking at the film and not even making the consideration of did I try to avoid the guy.’’It doesn't appear likely that the league office will agree with Richardson's vantage point upon appeal.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Antonio Brown torched the Tennessee Titans on Thursday, leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 40-17 victory on the strength of his 10 catches for 144 yards and three touchdowns. This isn't altogether surprising, but we're also amid a 24-hour news cycle that makes any dominant performance a rote footnote on the internet. By making the absurd seem routine, we've collectively underrated Brown, and he absolutely should be a top contender in the most divided MVP race in recent memory.Brown leads the NFL with 1,026 receiving yards, but pedants and exhausted fantasy football opponents will argue he's played 10 games as opposed to the majority of the league's nine. That's hardly a consideration. Brown also leads the league in receptions (70), targets (114), 20-yard plus catches (16), receiving yards per game (102.6), receiving first downs (46) to say nothing of the advanced metrics that likely support his candidacy as the league's best receiver. At the start of the year, there was a three-pronged argument over who was the NFL's best receiver: Brown, Julio Jones, or Odell Beckham Jr. While Jones has the best physical profile of any wideout, he hasn't consistently been his all-world self under a new offensive coordinator, and Beckham's candidacy was submarined before it began in earnest. It may not have mattered anyway. With a body of evidence growing mountainous as each game passes, Brown may be the best NFL player relative to their position. The passage of time is undefeated, and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger isn't exempt to this rule. Roethlisberger has a 61.8 completion percentage - his lowest since 2010 - while throwing 16 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. The 14th-year pro ruminated about retiring after an abysmal Oct. 8 performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars, then coldly dismissed any such notion when pressed by reporters. All too often, Roethlisberger looks like a shell of his former self, only to have Brown bail him out. One would be remiss to overlook Le'Veon Bell's all-around contributions, but it's Brown who answers the bell most often, catching a series of intermediate-to-long-range passes - which would've been otherwise intercepted - and turning them into scoring opportunities. That may be the rarest gift of all.If the MVP is judged to be the player who's most valuable to their team, Brown may be out of the running; Tom Brady, Carson Wentz, and Russell Wilson pose stronger arguments there, while Bell complicates Brown's candidacy. However, if the award is presented to the player with the most impact on the shape of the 2017 season, Brown should be skyrocketing to the top of the list.Brown is once again dominating the NFL and perhaps we're taking his brilliance for granted. He's on pace for the third-best season of his career which may also work as a deterrent against his chances of becoming the first wide receiver to win NFL MVP. When the portrait of the 2017 season is completed, it will be Brown at the forefront, snagging sublime catches with routine excellence as the Steelers sail away in the AFC North.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Denver Broncos general manager John Elway couldn't sit in silence any longer as his team remains mired in a five-game losing streak. The Broncos are two years removed from winning Super Bowl 50 and started the year 3-1 after missing the playoffs last season. However, the Broncos have slumped to the bottom of the AFC West, tied for last with the Los Angeles Chargers at 3-6."We'll look back once the season's over. At this point, we're still trying to figure out how we can get through it. There's no question at the end of the year we'll evaluate it, look back and see what happened," Elway said, via Nicki Jhabvala of The Denver Post."But I will tell you, I think we got a little bit soft. To be dead honest with you, we got a little bit soft. We went 4-0 in preseason, we started out 3-1, we get a bye week and if you exhale in this league, you're in trouble. To be dead honest with you, I think we exhaled and it's hard to recover from that. It'll be a lesson that hopefully we all learn and prevent from happening in the future."Elway also said he's disappointed by the way the Broncos have played, losing by 10, 28, and 25 points, respectively, in their last three losses."I've gone through losing streaks before and losses and tough seasons, but the way that we've lost these games has been the most disappointing thing."Elway also said head coach Vance Joseph, who was hired in January 2017, is undergoing growing pains as a first-year head coach. Joseph previously worked as the Miami Dolphins' defensive coordinator and never served as a head coach at any level prior to taking the Broncos job."There's going to be growing pains as a head coach, especially as a first-year head coach (and) we got a lot of youth on staff when it comes to coordinators, too. So there's growing pains there. Just like with players, we have to give them a chance to grow and get better and learn from certain situations. Obviously, it's been a little bit tougher situation, but sometimes you learn a lot more in tougher situations than you do when things are going good."Vance, in my mind, is doing just fine and continues to get these guys to play hard and the energy is still there. So we'll work our way through."Elway is quickly growing fed up and he'll certainly have his work cut out for him as the Broncos try to salvage their season with seven games remaining.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has been cleared to play against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday by an independent neurological consultant after suffering a concussion last week, the team announced Friday.Head coach Anthony Lynn said earlier in the week that he was hopeful Rivers would play, but he had still needed to be medically cleared.Rivers had been officially deemed questionable after Friday's practice, which was the second straight day he was able to participate fully. The veteran quarterback was diagnosed with a concussion Monday after reporting symptoms, though it appeared he suffered the injury on his final play of the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars attempting to make a tackle on an interception return.Rivers has started every game since the beginning of the 2006 season, making Sunday's contest his 195th consecutive start.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Despite an embarrassing Thursday night loss in front of a national audience, the Tennessee Titans don't appear to be in a heap of trouble from the outside looking in.They still sit fifth in the AFC with a winning record, and have a relatively easy upcoming schedule with the next four opponents starting their second-string quarterback. They have early-season wins over the vaunted defenses of the Jaguars and Seahawks, and remain in line to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2008.But they aren't good - not as good as they should be anyway. On paper, the Titans should have a balanced, well-oiled offensive machine powered by the dynamic skill set of Marcus Mariota, a combination of youth and experience at receiver, a quality offensive line, and one of the NFL's best 1-2 punches at running back with DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry. Despite playing in a rather weak division, the Titans' offense does not strike fear in its opponents.Category RankPassing Yards21stRushing Yards11thTotals Yards20thPoints15thIf you're looking for the reason why the offense is so much less productive than it should be, you don't need to look much further than the coaching staff.Mike Mularkey did well as head coach of the Bills in his first season back in 2005, scoring the sixth-most points in the league but ultimately missing the playoffs. Since then, he has not had his offense finish higher than 20th in points scored over his five-and-a-alf seasons as a head coach.Mularkey landed the Titans' coaching gig following a 2-7 stint as interim coach to end the 2015 season, with some attributing that faith to his amicable relationship with ownership. The team improved under their new coach the next season, following a 3-13 record in 2015 by going 9-7 in 2016. And despite his inability to make the Titans into an explosive offensive unit, he did remarkably better than his predecessor, which was enough to not get fired. The AFC is in rough shape with 10-of-16 teams entering Week 11 with a record below .500, so the Titans still have a good shot at making the playoffs, regardless of whether they are actually a "playoff-caliber" team. That makes it increasingly unlikely the team makes a concerted effort to elevate its conservative offence, with a playoff spot on the horizon.WeekOpponentRecord12at Colts3-713vs. Texans3-614at Cardinals4-515at 49ers1-916vs. Rams7-217vs. Jaguars6-3But even if Tennessee makes the tournament, it's tough to argue this is the year it gets over the hump to becoming a consistent contender. While some fans may be looking short-term at the opportunity to make it back to the playoffs, earning a game after Week 17 would essentially guarantee Mularkey keeps his position, and thus guarantee another year of Mariota's rookie contract is wasted on the same basic offense. If the Titans happened to falter down the stretch and miss the postseason, the front office would have plenty of reason to move on from Mularkey to someone who can appreciate the talent on the roster. General manager Jon Robinson's past experience in the Patriots' front office would likely make for a solid partnership with New England's offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is expected to be the hottest name on the coaching market after the season. The goal of football is obviously to win the most games, but sometimes a team needs to take a step backwards before it can move forward. This is one of those times.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Neal McCoy, a prominent country music singer, released a song taking aim at players who have protested racial inequality and police brutality during the American national anthem.McCoy released a new single Friday titled "Take A Knee, My Ass (I Won't Take A Knee)" on Facebook Live."I've been on 15 USO tours,†McCoy said via NBC 4 Columbus. “I’ve entertained our troops in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and all over the world. So, no, this is not a money grab. This is a guy that believes in our country, that does not like people kneeling, not standing with their hands over their hearts, for the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. That’s what I’m about.â€It's certainly a confusing title, however, and McCoy was roasted online by numerous people who didn't agree with his opposition to the protests.McCoy was incensed with Colin Kaepernick being named GQ's Citizen of the Year."If you haven’t seen it they named their GQ ‘Citizen of the Year’ for 2017, Colin Kaepernick,†McCoy said. “Now, I didn’t read the article, I saw it when I was driving, I understand they’re probably going to say he’s done a lot for Civil Rights and everything, and maybe he has. Maybe whatever he was trying to do, with civil unrest, maybe African Americans being treated wrong, or not equally, and some of that’s right. Maybe that’s what he was trying to do. But, taking a knee during the National Anthem at a professional NFL game is not the way to do it."It remains to be seen whether McCoy's single will be a hit.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has issued an apology for a racially insensitive comment he made four years ago that surfaced following a report that he used questionable language while threatening Roger Goodell.A video of Jones at a Dallas hotel bumping into a fan who was about to get married came out Friday morning. In it, the fan - a white man - asked Jones if he could record a message for his fiancee."Jennifer, congratulations on the wedding,'' Jones said, according to David Moore of Dallas Morning News. "Now, you know he's with a black girl tonight, don't you?''The camera then shows an African-American man laughing.Jones issued a statement through the team Friday, apologizing for the remark."That comment was inappropriate. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson provided a deeper insight into the jaw injury he suffered during a Nov. 9 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.Wilson said he avoided a fracture but had to remain on a liquid diet for 2-3 days as a result of the injury."It was pretty close," Wilson said to ESPN's Brady Henderson. "The doctor was like, 'Man, any harder, we probably (would've) had to wire your mouth shut,' so that was a good thing that didn't happen.""I had to wear this splint almost," Wilson added via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. "Basically a hard mouthguard which would reset my jaw a little bit and make me feel good again."Wilson suffered the injury after getting hit by Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby. Many believed Wilson suffered a concussion and reinserted himself back into the game, but revealed he actually had a jaw injury."I think that the league's got to do what they've got to do, and obviously it's really important for player safety and everything like that. I was completely fine, just my jaw got busted up pretty good as you guys could see," Wilson said. "But we're cooperating and doing everything that we can to make sure that we do it the right way. That's how we always try to do it, so that's all."The Seahawks star is expected to start Monday against the Atlanta Falcons without any setbacks.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Another week, another comfortable win in the survivor pool as the Los Angeles Rams hammered the Houston Texans on Sunday. Thanks to some smart selections early in the season, the Kansas City Chiefs are still available to be picked this week against the woeful New York Giants. The later one can last in a survivor pool, the strategy of picking against the NFL's worst teams - regardless of opponent - is a wise one. That's certainly the case with this week's selection.Team to pick if still aliveKansas City ChiefsBetting against the Giants is about as safe as it gets on the board these days, and when you add in that Andy Reid is 16-2 all time as a head coach coming off a bye, the Chiefs are a strong play this week. After a red-hot start to the season, Kansas City lost three of four games heading into their bye, but a trip to MetLife Stadium should be just what they need. The 49ers gashed the Giants for 186 yards on the ground last week, so expect a big day out of Kareem Hunt and the Chiefs offense.Record: 13-3
