Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving is not pleased with the NHL's decision to suspend Milan Lucic two games for roughing Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kole Sherwood."I've got the utmost respect for George Parros and the department of player safety," Treliving said. "They do a great job. But on this one, we vehemently disagree."Lucic landed a heavy sucker punch on Sherwood after the Jackets rookie tried to poke home a loose puck under goaltender David Rittich before the whistle. Lucic continued to get shots in after knocking Sherwood to the ice."I saw a player who poked, jabbed, whacked, speared, whatever you want to call it, the goaltender," Treliving said. "I think 31 teams around the league, if you do that to anybody, there is going to be a reaction."Lucic received a double minor for roughing on the play. Treliving added he thought the on-ice officials handled the play correctly.Lucic's history played a part in the league's decision. This is the fourth suspension of his career and he's been fined an additional five times. He's been suspended once and fined once for punches to the face of unwilling opponents since January 2016."We support our player 100 percent," Treliving continued. "We want our players to support each other, back each other up, and we felt that's what Milan was doing in this case."Lucic has three points in 16 games this season and sits third in the league with 30 penalty minutes. Treliving acquired the 31-year-old enforcer along with a conditional third-round pick from the Edmonton Oilers this summer in exchange for James Neal.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ryan Reaves and Evander Kane simply can't stop taking shots at each other. The forwards have gone back and forth over the past several years, creating one of the best player rivalries in hockey. There have been numerous altercations on the ice between them, and Kane said he felt like he was fighting "The Muffin Man" after the two squared off during the playoffs last spring."It might be longer than nine years, we didn't like each other in junior," Reaves said of the rivalry's origin on Sportsnet's After Hours on Saturday. "It kind of started early in my career, him running around and then I challenge him and he always tells me he's gonna beat me up but would never fight me."It was just that constant him chirping, chirping, chirping, and never doing anything about it."Kane responded to Reaves' comments on Twitter, saying the two never played against each other in the WHL.

The Dustin Byfuglien situation appears to have hit another complication. The veteran blue-liner and the Winnipeg Jets are likely headed to arbitration to settle the ongoing saga, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday's "Headlines" segment.Byfuglien was suspended by the team without pay to begin the season as he contemplated retirement despite having two seasons left on his contract. However, he recently underwent ankle surgery to repair unresolved issues from an injury suffered last season. If Byfuglien had no intention of retiring but was deemed unfit to play to begin the season due to a hockey-related injury, he likely would've been placed on long-term injured reserve and been able to collect his salary."It’s emotional, it’s heated, and it’s likely going to arbitration," Friedman said. "... But, from what I understand, (the Jets) feel in the exit physical at the end of last year, Dustin Byfuglien was deemed fit to play. He didn’t let anyone know that he had injuries with his ankle all summer, and made it clear at the beginning of the year he was ready to retire."However, Byfuglien - his representatives at Octagon and I assume the Players’ Association, too - their position is Byfuglien was hurt going into the playoffs, everybody knew that, he was playing injured, he took all summer off to heal, he went to Winnipeg because he planned to play, his ankle acted up again when he started skating, and they feel it’s a legitimate hockey injury."As part of the surgery, (they) discovered a broken bone in his foot, but there’s also dispute over when that injury occurred and when everybody knew this. So, laying it out that way right now, I think now everybody has a better understanding of why an arbitrator, as we sit here tonight, is probably going to have to decide this."Byfuglien has already missed out on roughly $1.4 million of his salary this year, Sportsnet's Chris Johnston added. The Jets, meanwhile, have severely missed their minutes leader from the last four seasons. In addition to Byfuglien, the offseason departures of Jacob Trouba, Tyler Myers, and Ben Chiarot have left Winnipeg's blue line shorthanded. Josh Morrissey is the only holdover to play more than 25 games for the Jets last year.Winnipeg enters Saturday ranked 21st in goals allowed after finishing in the top half of the league the last two campaigns.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. John Tavares says his broken finger hasn't gotten worse, and he's simply playing it safe by sitting out Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers."To say (I'm) not a little disappointed, I'd be lying, but (I've) got to be smart and make sure I put myself in a good spot when I come back, (so) that I can come back and play my game, and also make sure that the long term ... is in good shape," the Toronto Maple Leafs captain told the assembled media, including TSN, after Saturday's morning skate.Earlier on Saturday, Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock told reporters, including TSN's Mark Masters, that Tavares wouldn't make his much-anticipated return from a broken finger against the Flyers.Tavares said there's been no setback in his recovery. He also explained that he consulted with the team's medical staff Saturday morning and they all felt it would be best to take advantage of the next three days before Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Kings, for which he's hopeful to be ready. The 29-year-old returned to practice Wednesday and took part in Friday's session before joining the club on its trip to Philadelphia.Saturday's contest will be the seventh he's missed after suffering the injury Oct. 16 against the Washington Capitals.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews isn't phased by the negative criticism the team has received throughout a subpar opening month to the season."We're 14-to-15 games in and the world's crashing down on us but we're staying positive in this room," Matthews told the assembled media Friday, including TSN."It's early. We're still meshing together (with) new guys and new faces, so like I said, we want to take another step here in November and continue to put our best foot forward."A busy offseason saw the Leafs undergo their largest roster turnover with this core group of players, but with nine of their 14 games in November coming away from Scotiabank Arena, forward Mitch Marner hopes the club can mesh during its time on the road."We're more traveling this time around and we're going on road games, we're getting time with each other on the road," Marner said."I think it's good we're going to get some time to hang out on the road ... We haven't been able to really do that over this past month and it's always big for your team (to) get chemistry going early. We still have a lot of new guys on this team and this month's going to be big for us."With team captain John Tavares and forward Zach Hyman nearing a return, Toronto is inching toward having all its regulars healthy for the first time this season. The Leafs will look to begin November on the right note when they travel to Philadelphia to clash with the Flyers on Saturday.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. Can you believe it's already November? The first month of the NHL season absolutely flew by, and now we have a big enough sample size to really get a good feel for what to expect from teams on a nightly basis. Here's your guide to betting the first weekend of November games:Game bettingTampa Bay Lightning at New York Islanders (Friday)This will be the third game in four nights for the Lighting away from home. They've played things closer to the vest in this situation in the past, allowing just six goals in their last six games in this spot, while allowing two or fewer in 13 of their last 15. They tend not to score a ton either, with those games averaging 4.33 total goals. The Islanders play good defensive hockey on home ice as well, so look for this game to go under the current total of six.Winnipeg Jets at San Jose Sharks (Friday)San Jose has played nine of its first 13 games on the road and is off to a miserable start. The Sharks should be playing with plenty of urgency after returning from their east coast trip as they battle a Jets team that has struggled on defense. San Jose absolutely needs this game and the intensity should reflect that. Back them at a relatively short price.Toronto Maple Leafs at Philadelphia Flyers (Saturday)Both teams should play with some desperation here - the Leafs are losers of four of their last five, and the Flyers are losers of two straight. Philadelphia has been excellent at home this season, scoring in bunches and winning three of four, while Toronto has been uninspiring on the road. The Flyers have not lost at home to the Leafs since the 2015-16 season, a streak that should continue here.St. Louis Blues at Minnesota Wild (Saturday)The Wild have been one of the more disappointing teams through the season's first month, but playing nine of their first 13 games on the road, especially for a team that typically thrives at home, isn't a winning recipe. Minnesota has won all three of its home games over the past two weeks and we should get them at a great price here as likely underdogs. After losing 2-1 to the Blues on Wednesday in St. Louis, the Wild look to return the favor Saturday night.Colorado Avalanche at Arizona Coyotes (Saturday)After allowing just six goals through its first four home games, Arizona lost 4-1 to Montreal on Wednesday. The Coyotes, winners of six of their last eight, will have two days off to get set for a visit from the Avalanche, who play the night before in Colorado and will be without stars Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen. The Avs have lost their last five games on the road after playing at home the previous night. The Yotes are certainly worth backing in this spot at a likely short price.Chicago Blackhawks at Anaheim Ducks (Sunday)Facing John Gibson in the second game of a back-to-back away from home will not help Chicago solve its scoring issues. The Blackhawks are in Los Angeles on Saturday night for a game they should win before flying to Anaheim to play Sunday. They've been shut out in their only two road games so far this season (Saturday's result pending) and should have an equally tough time scoring against the Ducks, who continue to impress. Back Anaheim to close out the weekend with a win.Game propsBuffalo Sabres at Washington Capitals (Friday)Two of the Eastern Conference's best teams through October meet in Washington as the Capitals host the Sabres. Buffalo's firepower has dried up a bit over the past week, and while this is a talented team, regression is inevitable. The Sabres have scored just 15 goals in their last nine visits to Washington, so look to play their team total under 2.5.Montreal Canadiens at Dallas Stars (Saturday)Carey Price will return for the Canadiens, who play their third game in four nights amidst a Western Conference road trip. Coach Claude Julien will put an emphasis on a strong defensive game, which falls right in line with how the Stars have been playing. The first period under 1.5 goals seems like a strong situational play.New Jersey Devils at Carolina Hurricanes (Saturday)The Devils haven't done much winning this season, nor have they been able to score away from home. The team has just two goals in their three away games and visit a Hurricanes club that's allowed just six goals in their last four home contests. Until New Jersey proves it can score away from home, continue profiting with the under on their team total.Player propsWinnipeg Jets at San Jose Sharks (Friday)Evander Kane has been a power-play specialist for the Sharks this season and, in what should be a high-scoring game, has a great opportunity to add to his goal tally against the league's worst penalty kill.Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings (Saturday)The Kings have allowed at least five goals in each of their last four games and have allowed a league-high 54 tallies this season. Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome were outstanding in a 5-1 win over Los Angeles last week, each recording three points, and should have their way again on Saturday. Back either to score, but my money is on DeBrincat.Alex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. The Nashville Predators have signed forward Austin Watson to a three-year contract worth $4.5 million, the team announced Thursday.Watson's current contract, which pays him $1.1 million this season, was set to expire at the end of the campaign."Austin is the ultimate team player and we look forward to continuing to see him thrive and be an impactful member of our team," general manager David Poile said. Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff discussed Thursday the situation surrounding inactive defenseman Dustin Byfuglien, who has been away from the team for the opening stages of the season and recently underwent ankle surgery."It's a complicated issue," Cheveldayoff told reporters. "I'm here to speak but there's really not much that I can enlighten beyond what's been talked about as it stands right now."He added: "Going back to the start of training camp, that's when we met with Dustin and those are all pretty well-documented stuff and obviously over the course of time here, he has had an ankle surgery here now and we're dealing with that. So with respect to really anything else that I can comment on, that's pretty much where it's at, at this point in time. We're in constant conversations with his agents and that's where we're at."Byfuglien didn't attend training camp and was reportedly contemplating his future in the sport after being granted a personal leave. The team subsequently suspended him, but the ban was strictly for financial reasons, as he was made aware it was done so the Jets could remove his $7.6-million cap hit from their books. The 34-year-old blue-liner reportedly underwent the ankle procedure last week to repair an unresolved injury he suffered during the 2018-19 season, and his recovery could take more than four months, according to TSN's Darren Dreger. The NHL Players Association is in discussions with Byfuglien's agent, Ben Hankinson, to review the situation. If it's determined Byfuglien was injured playing hockey, the financial aspect of the issue could become more complicated, Dreger added.Byfuglien has played 14 NHL seasons and was held back by injuries last year. He managed to produce 31 points in 42 games and led all Jets skaters in ice time at 24:22 per contest. The Jets have felt the effects of his absence to start the campaign. Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin is hiring a lawyer to investigate how his name became associated with a company called Mark.Space and its financial losses, the player's agent, J.P. Barry, said, according to TSN's Rick Westhead.Russian website Sports.ru reported on Oct. 29 that Malkin invested $4 million in Mark.Space, a virtual reality startup. After delays in development, the company reportedly used an initial coin offering (ICO) - which uses cryptocurrency to crowdfund projects - to raise an additional $10 million by attaching Malkin's name to the project. That money has since been lost, according to Sports.ru.Malkin is discussing with lawyers why his name was included in the report by Sports.ru and plans to hire someone to investigate its claims.Barry said Malkin invested around $2 million in a clothing company that was run by his long-time friend. That company sold clothing online but Malkin wasn't aware it was in the cryptocurrency industry, his agent said."This is about two (business) partners going at each other and (Malkin) now has to figure out what happened," Barry said. "A lawyer will have to go in and get all the documents and figure out what happened with the company."Barry said neither he nor Malkin was contacted at any point by Sports.ru to comment on its findings prior to the report being published."No, the internet - it's garbage," Malkin told Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now. "I don't like the internet. ... Right now, it's garbage for me. I know I'm a good guy. I don't know what to say about that, because it's a little bit crazy for me, but I know it's nothing bad."Malkin, who has been out with a lower-body injury since Oct. 5, returned to practice Monday and is hopeful to play Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Inactive Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien recently underwent surgery on his ankle, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff confirmed on Thursday. The procedure was needed to repair unresolved issues from a high ankle sprain the blue-liner suffered last season, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie.Byfuglien didn't attend training camp and was reportedly contemplating his future in the sport after being granted a personal leave from the team.He was then suspended by the team without pay, which head coach Paul Maurice confirmed was a procedural decision that Byfuglien was aware of. The Jets were able to remove Byfuglien's $7.6-million cap hit from their books until his potential return to the club, though McKenzie reports it's too early to determine whether the defenseman will play this season.Byfuglien's recovery is expected to carry into the new year, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.Former Jets blue-liners Jacob Trouba, Tyler Myers, and Ben Chiarot found new teams over the summer, which, in combination with Byfuglien's surprising absence, has led to Winnipeg's depth issues on the back end. The Jets have struggled out of the gate to a 6-7 record and rank 24th with 44 goals against through 13 contests.Despite being limited to only 42 games in 2018-19, Byfuglien registered 31 points and led all Jets skaters in 24:22 of ice time per night.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. New Jersey Devils star Taylor Hall was rather miffed by the chorus of boo birds coming from the Prudential Center crowd during Wednesday's 7-6 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning."We’re kind of battling our own fans right now," Hall said, according to The Trentonian's Mike Ashmore. "We were 1-for-3 on the power play and we are getting booed. It’s a tie game, we are getting booed."That’s a tough environment to play in sometimes, especially when you are at home ... If you’re playing at home, you want to feed off the energy of the crowd and not let that affect you, but sometimes it does.â€Hall, whose two assists in the contest pushed his point total to nine in 10 games this season, is playing in the final year of his current deal and is scheduled to become one of the league's most coveted unrestricted free agents on July 1.The 27-year-old became the first player in Devils' history to capture the Hart Trophy after his career-best 93-point campaign in 2017-18.Following an exciting offseason, the Devils sit in last place in the Metropolitan Division with only two wins over their first 10 games.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. P.K. Subban was his own harshest critic after the New Jersey Devils fell 7-6 in overtime to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night. The veteran blue-liner logged 24 minutes, but he was held off the scoresheet and finished as a minus-2 during the loss. That's not his worst statistical effort, but Subban still took the blame for the loss."For our team we played so well all game. We should have won this game. I feel like a lack of me playing up to the level I'm capable of really hurt us today," Subban told reporters postgame."Today I looked like a rookie on the ice, to be honest with you."The Devils took an early lead, and they led 5-3 in the third period before Tampa scored three unanswered goals. Kyle Palmieri netted the equalizer with seven seconds left in the final frame, but Tyler Johnson's overtime winner spoiled a New Jersey effort that featured a 42-23 shot advantage."It's frustrating. Personally, I should have been minus-4 today. I don't know if I was or not. They brought me in to do a job, so, I didn't do my job today," Subban said.Despite his critical self-assessment, Subban's underlying results in Tuesday's affair indicate he was a victim of some poor luck. The Devils controlled 63% of the shot attempts and 67% of expected goals with Subban on the ice at five-on-five, according to Natural Stat Trick. However, New Jersey was outscored 4-1 with No. 76 on the ice.The Devils acquired Subban in a draft-weekend blockbuster this past summer in exchange for Steven Santini, Jeremy Davies, and two second-round picks. The 30-year-old had recorded four points in nine games entering Tuesday's contest.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

"... He immediately showed he was comfortable in this league.â€Dach has recorded a goal and an assist across six contests since being called up on Oct. 19. Defenseman Martin Marincin is the latest expendable depth player for the Toronto Maple Leafs."Jake Muzzin’s health could change this, but Toronto would move Martin Marincin," Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman wrote in Wednesday's edition of "31 Thoughts."Marincin has been a frequent healthy scratch and has played only six games for the Maple Leafs this season, collecting no points while averaging 11:06 in ice time.Muzzin left Tuesday's loss to the Washington Capitals with a leg injury, and Leafs head coach Mike Babcock had no update on his status Wednesday, according to TSN's Kristen Shilton. The Toronto back end was bolstered by the return of Travis Dermott, who made his season debut on Tuesday.Marincin has spent parts of five campaigns with Toronto and has notched 19 points in 122 contests over that span. The Leafs re-signed the 27-year-old to a one-year deal at the league minimum of $700,000 in June.Friedman reported earlier in October that Toronto was looking to trade forward Nic Petan to give him a better opportunity to play and to clear room on the roster for Zach Hyman's impending return.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a broken finger on Oct. 16 against the Washington Capitals. The 29-year-old skated on a line flanked by Mitch Marner and Trevor Moore, but head coach Mike Babcock says it's unclear when Tavares will return to game action.“I can’t tell you when he’s playing. I just know we’re doing everything, and he’s doing everything, to be ready when he gets his opportunity," Babcock said following Wednesday's practice, according to The Athletic's Jonas Siegel. "The doctors will check that out and decide when he’s available.â€The Leafs don't play again until they meet the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, and Tavares says he'll have a better idea of his status for that contest after practice on Friday, according to the Toronto Sun's Terry Koshan.Tavares was originally slated to be out for at least two weeks. The Ontario native tallied three goals and seven points in eight games before his injury. The inescapable storyline leading up to Tuesday's tilt between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals was Alex Ovechkin's pregame comments, in which he said his opponent needs to learn to "play differently" if it plans on winning a Stanley Cup.After the Capitals' 4-3 victory, during which Ovechkin recorded four points, Leafs head coach Mike Babcock was asked what he thought about the player's statement."Well, I don't know if he's wrong," Babcock said. "I think he knows because he lived it. If you look at Steve Yzerman, he lived it. A lot of guys live it until they're 30. You've got to decide whether you wait until you're 30 or do you want to figure it out now? It's the ultimate team game and you've got to sacrifice individual rights for team rights."Ovechkin's list of individual accomplishments was largely overshadowed by a lack of playoff success prior to winning the Stanley Cup in 2018. The Capitals hadn't made it out of the second round since drafting Ovechkin until they won it all two seasons ago."He lived it," Babcock said. "He was the guy. Then he figured it out. 'This is what we've got to do to win.'"Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews was also asked about Ovechkin's comments and agreed that playoff growing pains can help a team."Yeah, I mean, how many times did they lose to Pittsburgh before they finally broke through?" Matthews said, according to TSN's Mark Masters. "You learn from those experiences."Ovechkin's stellar performance Tuesday night continued his dominance versus the Maple Leafs, as he scored his 40th and 41st goals in his 50th game versus Toronto.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman suffered a lower-body injury Tuesday night against the New York Rangers and is considered day-to-day, the team announced.Pat Maroon, who departed midway through the game, and Anthony Cirelli, who didn't play Tuesday, are also both considered day-to-day with upper-body injuries.Head coach Jon Cooper said postgame that he's unsure if Hedman will be able to play Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils, according to The Athletic's Joe Smith. Cooper also added that he's hopeful Cirelli's injury isn't long term and that Maroon "checked out" OK.Hedman entered the evening with nine points in 10 games and led the Lightning in ice time. Cirelli has just four points but has been an effective two-way center for the Bolts. We have enough of a sample size that slow starts are cause for legitimate concern, while hot ones provide valid reason for optimism. As a result, Stanley Cup odds are also on the move.Let's look at some of the biggest risers and fallers as October ends.Edmonton Oilers (20-1)Previous odds (Oct. 8): 50-1Any value on the Western Conference co-leader is gone as the Oilers' odds have shortened to 20-1 courtesy of their 8-3-1 start. Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are on pace for 143 points each, while James Neal has already exceeded his goal total from last season. Still, this feels like a great time to sell high on Edmonton. The power play is scorching, but per 60 minutes of five-on-five play, the Oilers are 26th in the NHL in Corsi For, 29th in Fenwick For, 30th in shots for, and 25th in expected goals for (courtesy of Natural Stat Trick). Those rankings would be even worse if not for the heroics of their top line. Edmonton has minimal talent outside of its big four forwards, and that lack of depth will eventually prove its undoing.

New Jersey Devils forward Nikita Gusev will be a healthy scratch Wednesday but will be given a special learning opportunity with club legend Patrik Elias in the press box."(Elias) knows the difference between the leagues. He knows the differences of coming over as a European player to here," head coach John Hynes said Tuesday. "... Patty was a cerebral offensive player, but he was very good on both sides of the puck.""... Because Patty's been around with us so long, he knows how we want to play and he knows some of the adjustments it takes for a young player."The 27-year-old Gusev led the KHL in scoring last season and has three goals and one assist in nine games to kick off his NHL career."It's been a lot of hockey for him since he's come in," Hynes added. "... He's a veteran player with tons of experience, but he's a rookie in the NHL. That's something we want to help him work through."Elias spent 20 seasons with the Devils between 1995 and 2016 and played in the Russian Superleague during the lockout in 2004-05. Brent Seabrook isn't thrilled about having to watch his team's game from the press box once again. The Blackhawks defenseman will be a healthy scratch for the second consecutive contest when Chicago faces the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night, according to NBC Sports Chicago's Charlie Roumeliotis."I don't think I need rest," the veteran blue-liner said after the morning skate. "I think I feel great. I'm 34. You guys seem to want to write articles about my age and my speed. Tuesday will mark the third time he's been designated a healthy scratch in his 15-year career. He has produced one goal and no assists in nine games this season while averaging 17:39 of ice time. He averaged 19:06 in 2018-19 and has a career mark of 22:01.Seabrook is in the fourth season of an eight-year, $55-million contract. "He's going to miss some significant time here, I really don't have a timetable."It's unclear exactly when the 26-year-old Landeskog suffered the injury. Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin offered his blunt assessment on what the Toronto Maple Leafs must change if they want to win a Stanley Cup.“They’re still young group of guys. I hope they’re gonna learn," Ovechkin told the assembled media, including Yahoo Sports Canada, ahead of Tuesday night's contest. "But it’s up to them how they want to do it. If they want to play for yourself or if they want to win Stanley Cup, they have to play differently.â€Ovechkin's Capitals eliminated a young Maple Leafs team in the opening round of the 2017 playoffs. Over two years later, Toronto is still searching for its first playoff series victory with its core group and has struggled out of the gate in October. With a 6-5-2 record this season, the Leafs have been mired by slow starts and poor defensive play. The club has conceded the opening goal in 10 of its 13 contests and ranks 24th defensively - allowing 3.38 goals against per game.Auston Matthews, despite already scoring nine goals this season, has received criticism for his subpar defensive play. Ovechkin offered the 22-year-old some words of encouragement when he was asked about the Leafs' blue-chip center."He's still young, he is going to be a great player, and he is right now," Ovechkin said, according to the Washington Post's Samantha Pell. "Again, it is good thing - like, he wants to learn and he wants to be better, so it's nice."Tuesday marks the second of three meetings between the two sides this season. Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section.October has just about come and gone. Some teams will be aiming to stay hot over these final few days, while others will be desperate to generate some momentum heading into November. Here's your betting guide to the final week of October:Game bettingFlorida Panthers at Vancouver Canucks (Monday)Travis Green is likely still wondering how his team blew a 5-1 lead to lose in a shootout against the Capitals on Friday night. The Canucks have had two days off to think about losing me my bet, but they get the chance to right the ship here against the Panthers. Florida is coming off an impressive win in Edmonton last night, but this is a tough spot for it on a back-to-back with travel and backup Samuel Montembeault in net.San Jose Sharks at Boston Bruins (Tuesday)No team has lost fewer games this season than the Bruins, who find themselves in a tricky situation Tuesday as they gear up for their third game in four nights. As high as they're flying right now, this feels like a letdown spot after a perfect weekend, which included a shutout win over the St. Louis Blues in a Stanley Cup Final rematch. The Sharks are reeling through this East Coast trip, but expect a much better effort than they put forward against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday. San Jose will likely be priced close to +200 and offer excellent value.Washington Capitals at Toronto Maple Leafs (Tuesday)The Maple Leafs have been playing .500 hockey through October, and while they've hardly lived up to lofty expectations, they've been relatively easy to predict from a betting perspective. Much has been made about their deficiencies in back-to-backs, but they've consistently followed them up with impressive performances, including wins over Boston and San Jose in their last two attempts. The Capitals are concluding a lengthy five-game road trip, including four stops in Canada, and might lack the intensity of a more desperate Toronto side. Take the Leafs here at what's likely to be a very short price.Tampa Bay Lightning at New Jersey Devils (Wednesday)The Devils have only played nine games this season, fewest among all teams. That's not a comment on their on-ice performances, though it really could be. This will be just the second game in 11 nights for New Jersey, for no good reason. With just two wins thus far, the Devils sit in the NHL's basement, and with so much time off to iron out their issues, there's no excuse for them not to come roaring out of the gate. They face a Lightning team that will have played the night before in New York. The Devils aren't nearly as good as the preseason hype suggested, but this is as good a spot as any to back them so far this season.Edmonton Oilers at Columbus Blue Jackets (Wednesday)Following a 7-1 start, the Oilers head into the week going 1-1-2 over the last eight days. They've lost their last three road games, scoring just one goal. They begin an East Coast swing in Detroit on Tuesday before flying to Columbus for the second half of a back-to-back. The Blue Jackets keep things close at home, as each of their last five contests at Nationwide Arena has been decided by just a goal. Expect another tight game, with the under looking a strong play.Montreal Canadiens at Vegas Golden Knights (Thursday)The Canadiens have lost 10 of their last 13 contests on the road when playing the second game of a back-to-back, as they are here in the infancy stages of their West Coast trip. Keith Kinkaid will also almost assuredly be in net for Montreal, with Carey Price likely to start Wednesday night in Arizona. The price on the Golden Knights will be steep, so you can also look toward the puck line if you aren't willing to lay the juice.Game propsChicago Blackhawks at Nashville Predators (Tuesday)Until the Blackhawks prove they can score consistently, you should probably bet against them doing so. They had a five-goal outburst against the lowly Kings on Sunday but have otherwise been starved of goals. Prior to that game, they scored just three times in their previous three outings, and they were shut out in their only road contest this season. Ride their team total under 2.5, especially against a Predators team that's held Chicago to two goals or fewer in each of its last six trips to Bridgestone Arena.Montreal Canadiens at Vegas Golden Knights (Thursday)Doubling up on this game, hit the Canadiens' team total under 2.5 goals. In their last 14 games away to Western Conference teams in the second half of a back-to-back, they've scored two or fewer goals in 12 of them. And, of course, there's also the old adage about Quebec-born goalies elevating their game against the Canadiens. Could a shutout for Marc-Andre Fleury be in the cards?Player propsFlorida Panthers at Vancouver Canucks (Monday)No team is averaging more goals per game this season than the Canucks. They should definitely improve on that against a Panthers club allowing 3.45 goals thus far. (Only six teams have allowed more.) Florida will play its backup and could be tired playing in its second game in as many nights. Elias Pettersson's three goals this season have come in Vancouver's four home contests. Look for him to add to his tally in this one.Edmonton Oilers at Detroit Red Wings (Tuesday)The Oilers boast the league's top power-play unit and will take on the Red Wings and their 29th-ranked penalty kill. Seven of James Neal's 10 goals this season have come with the man advantage. Back him to get on the scoresheet against Detroit.Alex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore.
