Preparing for Advanced Manycore Architectures – and Implications on the Interconnect
In this video from the 2015 OFS Developer's Workshop, Katie Antypas from LBNL describes preparations for the Cori supercomputer. "We need to emphasize here that the Knights Landing processor is self-hosted, and so that means it’s not an accelerator. It’s not a coprocessor and the particular kernel processor that will be having for NERSC-8, will have more than 60 cores and it will have multiple hardware threads for the core. That’s a lot, right? Having 60 cores per node with multiple hardware threads. That a significant increase from both our Hopper and Edison system, which has 24 cores each."

LANL Reduces Water Consumption for Supercomputer Cooling
Today Los Alamos National Laboratory announced that it decreased its water usage by 26 percent in 2014, with about one-third of the reduction attributable to using reclaimed water to cool its supercomputing center.

Adaptive routing dynamically and automatically re-routes traffic to alleviate congested ports. In networks where traffic patterns are more predictable, static routing has been shown to produce superior results. Firejail Linux Capabilities Guide
In this article I describe the Linux capabilities feature of Firejail security sandbox. Firejail allows the user to start programs with a specified set of capabilities. The set is applied to all processes running inside the sandbox, thus restricting what processes can do, and somehow reducing the attack surface of the kernel.
Reglue & Sébastien Jodogne Receive FSF Awards
Ken Starks put another well deserved feather in his cap on Saturday when he accepted an award for Reglue from the Free Software Foundation (FSF) at the LibrePlanet conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday. Reglue was announced as this year’s winner of the Project of Social Benefit Award by FSF executive director John Sullivan, who also announced that Sébastien Jodogne had won this year’s award for Advancement of Free Software. The event took place on the MIT campus.

"We introduce a high-performance cost-effective network topology called Slim Fly that approaches the theoretically optimal network diameter. Slim Fly is based on graphs that approximate the solution to the degree-diameter problem. We analyze Slim Fly and compare it to both traditional and state-of-the-art networks. This means, again following best SEO practices, I’ll need to use “Linux” and “open source,” as well as the acronym “FOSS” with sufficient frequency to convince the search engines that this is an important part of the story — again, eight uses each for my 800 word article. And if I really want to make sure that the article finds its audience, I’ll need to include “Linux” and “FOSS” in the title too.
