The NFL plans for the 2020 draft to go ahead as scheduled on April 23-25 despite the league's general manager subcommittee's unanimous recommendation to postpone it amid the coronavirus pandemic, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Dianna Russini. With much of the league's operations shutting down in response to the COVID-19 crisis, general managers are reportedly concerned there won't be enough time for teams to do essential pre-draft tasks, such as conducting player physicals.Another issue is reportedly that some teams could gain a competitive advantage by being permitted to be in their facilities during the draft, while staffs with other clubs can't because they're in locked-down states."I think a lot of owners aren't sold on keeping it on schedule," one league source told Schefter and Russini. "Of course the power owners are calling the shots. Plus, add to the fact that April is going to be the toughest month with this virus. It's really a poor look."Commissioner Roger Goodell told teams to close facilities until at least April 8 in a memo Tuesday.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Denver Broncos president and general manager John Elway explained one of the more curious moves of the first wave of NFL free agency. The Broncos signed Melvin Gordon - who was believed to have more lucrative offers - to a two-year, $16-million contract despite having Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman on the roster. But Elway believed he couldn't pass up the opportunity to add a player of Gordon's ilk."I know there's people going, 'Why do you need another horse?' Well, when you have an opportunity for Melvin Gordon to come in here, we felt like it was an addition to the team," Elway said to team writer Aric DiLalla. He added: "He's a guy that obviously has had a lot of success in this league. He's scored a lot of touchdowns and has caught the football a ton. So we feel like with him - with Melvin, as well as Phillip - that we've got a great one-two punch, and we'll only get better in the backfield."Gordon has rushed for 4,240 yards and scored 47 touchdowns in five seasons. Despite holding out for the early portion of the 2019 campaign, the two-time Pro Bowler put up 612 rushing yards and nine total scores for the Los Angeles Chargers. The undrafted Lindsay has eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his two seasons with the Broncos. He ran for 1,011 yards and seven touchdowns last year while sharing time with Freeman. However, Lindsay has just 241 and 196 receiving yards, respectively, in his two campaigns, while Gordon had 42 receptions for 296 yards in just 12 games last season.Elway said the signing came down to the team finding more ways to get into the end zone."Ultimately, we have to score more points this year. We've struggled on the offensive side the last two, three years, and so we've got to get better on that side," Elway said. "I think Melvin will be one of those key pieces to help us get better."Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Dallas Cowboys and franchise-tagged quarterback Dak Prescott have resumed contract negotiations, a source told ESPN's Ed Werder.Prescott was hit with the exclusive tender, which means he can't negotiate with another team. If the two parties don't agree to a long-term extension by July 15, the signal-caller will earn $33 million on the one-year deal. The 26-year-old reportedly turned down a new contract worth $33 million per season with $105 million guaranteed in early March. That annual figure would've put Prescott behind only Russell Wilson ($35 million), Ben Roethlisberger ($34 million), Aaron Rodgers ($33.5 million), and Jared Goff ($33.5 million).Prescott is looking for his first career extension after earning $4.03 million over four years on his rookie deal. Few players in NFL history likely understand Tom Brady's situation better than Joe Montana, who was traded by the San Francisco 49ers in the twilight of his legendary career.Brady was instead able to gain control of his fate. He decided to leave for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency without the New England Patriots making a serious attempt to keep him, and it's the Patriots' choice that Montana can't understand."I don't know what’s going on inside there, but somebody made a mistake," Montana told USA TODAY Sports' Jarrett Bell on Wednesday. In his introductory press conference Tuesday, Brady refused to go into detail about his motivation for leaving the only franchise he'd ever known. However, a report by ESPN's Seth Wickersham pointed to the deteriorating relationship between Brady and head coach Bill Belichick as the primary reason for the dramatic split."(Brady) wanted what everyone wants from an employer: to feel valued and to love work," wrote Wickersham. "They seemed like reasonable asks - until Brady realized that in New England, under Bill Belichick, he might be asking the impossible."Because of this, Montana believes the Bucs will be getting an invigorated Brady."I think it's going to be fun for him," Montana said. "Probably for the first time in a long time he'll be having fun, if I understand what he's been saying, or what I've been reading."Brady is entering uncharted territory in 2020. No QB has ever been a productive starter at 43 years old. Montana was traded at 36, and after two substandard years with the Kansas City Chiefs, the signal-caller retired. But the Hall of Famer thinks that if anyone can keep the competitive fire alive, it's Brady."No one will put more pressure on him to perform than himself," said Montana.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Tom Brady mentally cut the cord on the New England Patriots two days before he agreed in principle to a contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers."It was really the night that I stopped by and spoke with (owner) Mr. (Robert) Kraft," he said Tuesday on his introductory conference call, according to CBS Boston's Michael Hurley. "And we spoke and we had a great conversation. And I just wanted to express what he's meant to me in my life, and we spoke with coach (Bill) Belichick at the same time. We were at different locations and we talked to him. It was a great conversation. Got a chance to talk to Jonathan Kraft as well. All three of those guys have been involved in so many important decisions in my life, career-related, personal-related."After 20 seasons and six Super Bowl championships in New England, Brady officially took his talents to Tampa on March 20, inking a two-year contract that reportedly contains $50 million guaranteed. The quarterback posted a statement on social media the morning after he met with Kraft, announcing he wouldn't return to the Patriots.Characteristically, Brady was otherwise mum when asked about his exit from New England."I don't want to talk about the past because that's not relevant to what's important in my future and what's going on this offseason for me," he said. The 42-year-old did note he wasn't disappointed the Patriots didn't try harder to keep him."There's nobody who's been a greater fan of the Patriots than me," he said. "I have nothing but total respect and love. I'm so grateful to Mr. Kraft, and the organization, and coach Belichick, and all the coaches and obviously all of my teammates."When asked about Kraft, who suggested after the departure that Brady left Foxborough of his own volition, Brady said he's "not responsible" for those comments."I think Mr. Kraft has been a great influence in my life and I'm so grateful for the two decades and I referenced that the other day - it's been an amazing thing for my family," he said.Brady left the Patriots as the winningest quarterback in NFL history.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Cincinnati Bengals continued their offseason overhaul Wednesday, agreeing to terms with free-agent safety Vonn Bell on a three-year, $18-million deal, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.Bell spent the first four seasons of his career with the New Orleans Saints after they selected him in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.A versatile defensive back, the 25-year-old is best utilized near the line of scrimmage. He thrives in run defense and is also an effective blitzer. The former Ohio State standout amassed 89 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception across 13 starts in 2019.The reported signing adds yet another veteran presence to Cincinnati's roster. Usually passive on the open market, the Bengals continue to retool their defense after adding D.J. While Cam Newton should have a handful of suitors on the open market, don't expect a reunion with Ron Rivera.Rivera, the current head coach of the Washington Redskins, was asked about the possibility of signing Newton but admitted his team was going in a different direction."At the end of the day, we have a young football team with a young quarterback in position," Rivera said, according to team writer Kyle Stackpole. "We have the chance to set and establish a thing, so that's the way we're looking at it."Going forward, you never know what's going to happen," he continued. "But where we are right now, and we made a commitment to young guys to find out who we have as a football team."Dwayne Haskins, Washington's 2019 first-round pick, currently sits atop the team's depth chart, with former Carolina Panthers signal-caller Kyle Allen behind him. Rivera said he's "going into camp believing" Haskins will start in 2020, but he also has high hopes for his recently acquired backup."Kyle fits what we do," he said. "He understands our system. Scott Turner is our offensive coordinator, and we're using the system we basically had in place for nine seasons (in Carolina)."Newton and Rivera both joined the Panthers in 2011 and spent nine seasons leading the franchise. Marcus Mariota may have seen a path to an eventual starting role before signing with the Las Vegas Raiders, but the quarterback insists he's coming in as a backup."First and foremost, this is Derek (Carr)'s team, and I understand that," Mariota told KHON-TV, according to ESPN's Paul Gutierrez. He added: "My priority going into free agency was to be a part of a team that I felt could bring out the best in me. Whatever happens, whatever comes of that, I'm ready for."But I do know to play starting quarterback in the NFL, to be at that spot, is not an easy job to do. And I think when it comes down to it, a strong, stable, supportive quarterback room makes that job a whole lot easier, and that's what we have to do. And I'm going to do my best to support Derek in every possible way that I can ... I'm just going to try to become the best player that I can be and see where that takes me."Mariota joined Las Vegas as a free agent last week, inking a two-year, $17.6-million deal with the Raiders after five up-and-down seasons with the Tennessee Titans. The former No. 2 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner lost his job to Ryan Tannehill last season and watched as Tannehill led Tennessee to the AFC Championship Game."These last five years have been a blessing, no doubt," Mariota said of heading west. "I think Nashville has treated us very well. But this is a great opportunity for us, and it's an opportunity to be closer to home and also to be part of a great organization."The 26-year-old has averaged 210 passing yards per contest over 63 career games. Cam Newton is officially a free agent. The longtime Panthers superstar becoming available might seem like less of a story after two injury-marred seasons, but he's not nearly as far removed from elite play as you might think.Completing a career-high 67.9% of his pass attempts, Newton had been performing at a high level in 2018 before a shoulder injury held him back and eventually ended his season after 14 games. Now reportedly healthy after a Lisfranc issue limited him to two starts in 2019, Newton will get every opportunity to re-emerge as one of the NFL's few true game-changers at the most important position. His market won't be overly competitive, as many teams already have a quarterback in place, but any club facing uncertainty at that spot should be interested. Here's a look at five possible fits for the 2015 MVP.PatriotsThe Patriots should be first in line for Newton after Tom Brady's departure. Recent reports appear to suggest the team is content moving forward with its current crop of quarterbacks after signing Brian Hoyer to join second-year signal-caller Jarrett Stidham. But that's pretty tough to believe. As we laid out in our look at the Patriots' options, Newton is the most sensible choice for a team wanting to maintain its elite status. The club needs to upgrade the supporting cast around its future quarterback, but with his skill set, Newton is the rare passer who can make things happen even without help from receivers. If you need a refresher, Carolina's wideouts during his MVP season were Ted Ginn, Jerricho Cotchery, Corey Brown, and Devin Funchess.Brady is still talented, but there was only so much a 42-year-old could do from the pocket to overcome the deficiencies of a receiving corps that couldn't consistently separate from coverage. That would be less of an issue with Newton because his rushing ability makes him an X-factor.This Patriots team could actually put together a better formula for success than last year if it makes upgrades at the skill positions, with Josh McDaniels designing an offense around Newton's rare skill set and a tremendous defense still in place. You've got to think Bill Belichick knows that, too.ChargersThe Chargers boast one of the NFL's most talented rosters from top to bottom, and they improved further while adding Chris Harris, Linval Joseph, Trai Turner, and Bryan Bulaga this offseason. They're a quarterback (and probably a left tackle) away from Super Bowl contention. In almost any other year, that would be a fairly substantial, and daunting, final box to check because top-tier starters don't often become available. However, everything may be working out in the Chargers' favor this offseaon, with Newton becoming a free agent so late in the process - a week after Los Angeles missed on Brady - presenting a perfect situation.Los Angeles is reportedly moving forward with Tyrod Taylor as its starting quarterback, and presumably entertaining the idea of selecting a top passer with the No. 6 overall pick. But why not pivot to Newton and use that selection on one of the premier offensive tackles available this year?Still young by quarterback standards, the 30-year-old wouldn't be a short-term solution for the Chargers. His presence could reshape an offense that had been trending in the wrong direction under an immobile Philip Rivers, allowing the team to enter a window of contention. The Chargers would offer the best supporting cast in Newton's career, including the Panthers team that went 15-1 en route to a Super Bowl appearance in his MVP season.JaguarsThe Jaguars seem poised to begin a new era with Gardner Minshew after somehow convincing the Bears to take on Nick Foles' contract and give them a fourth-round pick. But as we know, plans in the NFL are never set in stone. Things can change quickly as better options arise.Minshew is something of a cult hero in Jacksonville after a surprisingly successful rookie season, so bringing in a clear-cut starter to unseat him wouldn't be the most popular move. But he's a sixth-round pick who wasn't exactly spectacular in 2019 and was even briefly benched after a hot start taking over for an injured Foles. Can the Jaguars really afford to pass up the opportunity to make a major upgrade with Newton suddenly available?Newton would be the best quarterback the Jaguars have ever fielded. Even if rebuilding the rest of the roster is now more of a long-term project than expected, getting a cornerstone talent under center is always step one. Such a player being available while not tied to draft-pick compensation - and likely willing to sign a low-risk, short-term deal - is a rare circumstance that could force the Jaguars to change course on any strategy they had for the quarterback spot even one week ago.DolphinsMiami still holds a ton of cap space following a busy start to the offseason. After most of the big-name free agents signed in the first few days, an organization seemingly set on rebuilding hasn't had many avenues to flex its financial muscle. Here's one.The Dolphins have been positioning themselves to take a top quarterback in the 2020 draft for well over a year now. Identifying this team as a landing spot for Newton isn't necessarily making the argument Miami should throw those plans out the window. Instead, this is acknowledging that searching for a long-term answer at quarterback - and the first true franchise signal-caller since Dan Marino - should involve taking as many swings as possible. If that means signing Newton and drafting Tua Tagovailoa, so be it.As we've seen in the past, with the Patriots' Brady-Garoppolo situation being perhaps the most relevant example, having more than one quality quarterback is an enviable position - some teams struggle to get even one. Signing Newton would theoretically allow the Dolphins to take their time developing whichever quarterback they may select in the first round (if that's Tua, such a scenario is ideal with his ongoing recovery from a major hip injury). The team would also be more competitive in 2020 and then assess where things stand at this time next year.If the rookie doesn't show he's ready to play, Newton is a fine fallback option. And if the young passer is primed to take over, the Dolphins can begin shopping the star quarterback who has hopefully rehabbed his trade value. What's the downside?RedskinsRumors of Washington entertaining the idea of taking Tua with the No. 2 pick will likely prove to be a calculated leak to drum up trade interest. With that floating out there, the Redskins ensure any team looking to move up for the Alabama standout must call them to get their guy, and not the Lions at No. 3.But let's also consider the possibility there's at least some truth to the Redskins weighing their quarterback options, which certainly isn't out of the question. The new staff under former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera isn't tied to 2019 first-rounder Dwayne Haskins, and the Ohio State product didn't do much to impress during a rocky first season. If the Redskins wish to go in another direction, or at least provide some competition for Haskins, Newton is an obvious fit. Rivera, the head coach in Carolina for every game Newton has played, knows the star quarterback better than anyone.Turning to Newton would give Washington a far more streamlined path to competitiveness while allowing Haskins to develop at his own pace. Eventually, if one of the two passers becomes the long-term answer at the position, the other can be traded for assets.Rivera has already brought in several former Panthers in an effort to change a losing culture. Adding another in what would be his most significant move yet shouldn't be ruled out.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The New York Jets are signing free-agent receiver Breshad Perriman to a one-year deal worth up to $8 million, with $6 million guaranteed, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, shared with ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 26-year-old is coming off his best year in the pros. Operating as the third receiver behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' top-ranked pass offense, Perriman recorded career highs of 36 catches, 645 yards, and six touchdowns. However, the lion's share of those totals came in the final three weeks of the season - with Evans and Godwin sidelined by injuries - when Perriman went off for 349 yards and four scores. The Carolina Panthers released quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday, ending his tenure with the club after nine seasons. The former MVP was declared healthy Monday after passing a physical the team and his agency organized, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter."Cam has meant a lot to this organization and the Carolinas," general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement. "Everyone saw his performances on the field. I had the privilege of seeing how hard he worked off the field, and his commitment to this team when no one was watching."He's the ultimate competitor and it physically hurts him to lose. He willed this team to victory on many occasions and will always be considered one of the greatest players in the history of this franchise. His contributions to this team, this community, and the game of football will leave a lasting impact on our organization."Carolina drafted the now 30-year-old first overall in 2011, and the charismatic signal-caller quickly ascended to stardom. He was named MVP in 2015 while leading the Panthers to Super Bowl 50, which they lost to the Denver Broncos. The team signed Teddy Bridgewater to a lucrative three-year contract during free agency, spelling the end of Newton's time in Carolina.Newton was released less than two months after leaving a meeting with Hurney, owner David Tepper, and first-year head coach Matt Rhule feeling "inspired." The veteran said he was confident about remaining in Carolina for the 2020 season. The Panthers granted the three-time Pro Bowler permission to seek a trade once it became clear they were moving on from him, but no deal materialized. Carolina unsuccessfully tried to send Newton to the Chicago Bears or Los Angeles Chargers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. His recent injury history and salary of $19.1 million in 2020 were presumably the obstacles.Carolina went 68-55-1 in the regular season and 3-4 in the playoffs in games Newton started.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Jacksonville Jaguars are the favorites to sign Winston, but a couple of other teams with longer odds make more sense.TeamOddsJacksonville Jaguars+200New Orleans Saints+325Miami Dolphins+350Denver Broncos+550New England Patriots+750Washington Redskins+900Pittsburgh Steelers+1000Las Vegas Raiders+1100Los Angeles Chargers+1500New Orleans Saints +325The Jaguars are the favorites but find themselves in a clear rebuild mode, so it's unlikely the team will give Winston a big contract. If he has to settle for a one-year deal, a team like the Saints makes more sense. No, New Orleans isn't currently an ideal fit on paper with starter Drew Brees and backup Taysom Hill already on the roster. However, the Saints are Super Bowl contenders, and after losing Teddy Bridgewater to Carolina, it could be tempting to sign Winston for a year to back up Brees while Hill continues to develop. With a starting job no longer a realistic possibility, Winston is more likely to land as a valuable backup for a playoff contender.New England Patriots +750The Patriots were once the favorites to sign Winston, but New England was never a great fit. Bill Belichick isn't a fan of mistakes, and Winston has been a turnover machine over his career, leading the NFL with 30 interceptions last season. Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels look for certain tendencies that fit their system like delivering the ball quickly and not giving points away in the red zone. Neither of those describes Winston's style of play. There's always a chance that the Patriots could pounce if Winston's market hits rock bottom, but don't bet on it. It simply doesn't add up.Pittsburgh Steelers +1000The Pittsburgh Steelers lurk further down the oddsboard at 10-1. Pittsburgh is set at starter with Ben Roethlisberger, but Big Ben is 38 years old, coming off a serious elbow injury, and apparently in the mix to become the next Santa Claus.

The Carolina Panthers are expected to release quarterback Cam Newton as early as Tuesday, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Newton referred to himself as "unemployed" in an Instagram video Monday after his presumed replacement, Teddy Bridgewater, put pen to paper on a three-year contract worth over $60 million. The Panthers tried to trade Newton and held conversations with the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Chargers, but Carolina couldn't find a taker for his contract, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Newton, who's struggled with injuries the last two seasons, is due $19.1 million in 2020, the final year of his deal.Newton was drafted first overall by Carolina in 2011. Aided by his unique charisma, he quickly ascended to stardom. He captured MVP honors in 2015 while leading the Panthers to an appearance in Super Bowl 50, where they fell to the Denver Broncos.Newton's future in Carolina was in doubt from the moment the team hired Matt Rhule, who was known for rebuilding college programs, as its new head coach. The signal-caller seemed confident that he would stick with the Panthers, though, saying at the end of January that he came out of a meeting with Rhule, general manager Marty Hurney, and owner David Tepper feeling "inspired."Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Trent Williams' agent has called for the Washington Redskins to set his client free one way or another, insisting the team has refused to negotiate a trade in good faith."The relationship between the Redskins and Trent Williams has reached a point where it's in the best interest that the Redskins trade or release him," Vincent Taylor told ESPN's Adam Schefter in a statement.Williams has wanted out of Washington since last summer. The seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle grew irate over the way the team handled a situation involving his health, and he also wanted a new contract."Despite its knowledge of irreconcilable differences, Washington was unable (or unwilling) to negotiate a trade of Williams," Taylor said. "The team then gave Williams and his representatives the right to seek trading partners. Williams' representatives provided the team with trading options, but the Redskins have shown no interest in negotiating in good faith, and, in fact, have given inconsistent demands on what it wants in a return for a trade."Williams didn't play last season, holding out for several weeks before reporting in late October and heading straight to the non-football injury list. The Redskins were reportedly seeking a second-round pick in return as recently as March 14.

With the first wave of free agency complete and the 2020 NFL Draft less than a month away, theScore's Dane Belbeck, Daniel Wilkins, and Mike Alessandrini project the first round of selections.1. Cincinnati Bengals - Joe Burrow, QB, LSUThe coronavirus pandemic has impacted sports on a number of levels, but it won't change Cincinnati's first selection. Burrow has the skill set to lead the Bengals out of the NFL basement, and he's the most logical pick atop the draft. We don't anticipate Cincinnati agreeing to trade down, either. - Alessandrini2. Washington Redskins - Chase Young, Edge, Ohio StateQuinn Harris / Getty Images Sport / GettyWashington will put the quarterback rumors to bed by snagging Young, whose incredible tape speaks for itself. The addition of Young - one of the most dominant collegiate players in the last decade - will give the Redskins an impressive defensive line that should be a problem in the NFC East. - Belbeck3. Detroit Lions - Jeff Okudah, CB, Ohio StateDetroit signed Desmond Trufant to address its cornerback spot before trading away Darius Slay, but that shouldn't prevent the organization from using a premium pick on the position. The consensus top defensive back available is Okudah, who could become a true lockdown corner and single-handedly change the shape of an NFL defense. - Wilkins4. New York Giants - Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa Dave Gettleman has signed a number of defensive upgrades in free agency, so it appears he'll target a premier offensive tackle at No. 4. New York can't go wrong with any of the top blockers, but Wirfs' athletic profile and outstanding tape give him the highest ceiling. With Nate Solder still under contract, the Iowa product can slot in at right tackle and give sophomore QB Daniel Jones a significant boost. - Alessandrini5. Miami Dolphins - Tua Tagovailoa, QB, AlabamaA year after the phrase "Tank for Tua" became popular, Miami won't need the No. 1 pick to land its franchise quarterback. Tagovailoa's injury concerns have lessened following optimistic medical reports, and a season to get healthy while learning the pro game behind Ryan Fitzpatrick seems just about perfect. - Belbeck6. Los Angeles Chargers - Justin Herbert, QB, OregonIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThe Chargers are a candidate to trade up for the quarterback of their choice, but this scenario still sees them land one of the top three signal-callers. Herbert's combination of arm talent and athleticism make him a strong fit for the offense that Anthony Lynn is building in the post-Philip Rivers era. - Wilkins7. Carolina Panthers - Isaiah Simmons, LB, ClemsonNew head coach Matt Rhule appears to be building the Panthers from the ground up, so adding a defensive difference-maker like Simmons would be a no-brainer. The versatile prospect can play as an off-ball linebacker, a slot cornerback, a deep safety, or an off-ball chess piece in dime packages. Oh, and he can thrive in every one of those roles. With a variety of needs across the roster, bank on Carolina nabbing the best player available. - Alessandrini8. Arizona Cardinals - Mekhi Becton, OT, LouisvilleMost analysts believed Arizona would target a receiver here, but the addition of DeAndre Hopkins has freed the team up to address its offensive line. The 6-foot-7, 365-pound Becton showed off incredible athleticism at the combine, surely catching the Cardinals' eye. An offseason haul of Hopkins and Becton would be a dream scenario for emerging star quarterback Kyler Murray. - Belbeck9. Jacksonville Jaguars - Derrick Brown, DT, AuburnIt'd be easy to roll your eyes at the Jaguars being linked to yet another first-round lineman, but this pick makes plenty of sense after the mass exodus of talent from the formerly star-studded defense. Brown would join 2019 first-rounder Josh Allen as the Jaguars look to establish a new foundation up front . - Wilkins10. Cleveland Browns - Jedrick Wills Jr., OT, AlabamaIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThe Browns dipped into the free-agency pool to fill a few key holes, but the team must still add a left tackle to protect franchise quarterback Baker Mayfield. Wills played on the right side at Alabama but possesses the skill set to dominate on Mayfield's blind side for years to come. With Wills and newly signed Jack Conklin blocking the edges, Cleveland's offense would be on track for a major rebound. - Alessandrini11. New York Jets - CeeDee Lamb, WR, OklahomaThis pick is almost too perfect, as Lamb would immediately fill the Jets' desperate need for a No. 1 receiver. The Oklahoma star's catch radius is among the best in this draft, while he excels at making contested receptions and turning small plays into big gains. This selection would also go a long way toward helping quarterback Sam Darnold's development. - Belbeck12. Las Vegas Raiders - Jerry Jeudy, WR, AlabamaAfter spending so much money on the defensive side of the ball in free agency, the Raiders can use one of their two first-round picks to fill a glaring hole a receiver. Jeudy's ability to separate at all levels of the field would complement the talents of Tyrell Williams on the opposite side and Hunter Renfroew in the slot, suddenly giving Las Vegas an interesting group of wideouts. - Wilkins13. San Francisco 49ers (from IND) - Javon Kinlaw, DT, South CarolinaTalk about executing a long-term plan. Niners general manager John Lynch traded defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts for the 13th overall pick and is set to draft his replacement here. Kinlaw's not as polished as Buckner at the moment, but he's a high-upside interior rusher who comes at a cheaper price and would allow Lynch to improve other areas of his roster. Hats off to him. - Alessandrini 14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Andrew Thomas, OT, GeorgiaIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyA strong offensive line is important for any team, but when your quarterback is on the wrong side of 40, the protection unit is even more significant. The Bucs took a major step toward respectability by signing Tom Brady, and adding Thomas would go a long way toward making the legendary QB more comfortable in Tampa. - Belbeck15. Denver Broncos - Henry Ruggs III, WR, AlabamaDenver should be prioritizing the addition of another top target to play opposite breakout star Courtland Sutton, and after spending elsewhere in free agency, an early-round pick to address the position seems all the more likely. Ruggs' game-breaking speed would round out a stellar group of pass-catchers who can grow alongside second-year quarterback Drew Lock. - Wilkins16. Atlanta Falcons - CJ Henderson, CB, FloridaThis is a dream scenario for Atlanta. Henderson could easily be selected inside the top 15, but he's sitting here for a Falcons squad in desperate need of an upgrade in the secondary. The former Florida star profiles as an excellent fit in Dan Quinn and Raheem Morris' defense, and he's arguably the top prospect available here. Plus, Atlanta will be looking for a cornerback following the release of Trufant. - Alessandrini 17. Dallas Cowboys - K'Lavon Chaisson, Edge, LSUWith length, speed, and strength in spades, Chiasson possesses all the qualities a team (and Jerry Jones) could want in an edge rusher. With Robert Quinn now in Chicago, the LSU standout can slide right in and make an impact in Dallas. - Belbeck18. Miami Dolphins (from PIT) - Denzel Mims, WR, BaylorIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyAfter demonstrating a truly elite athletic profile at the combine, Mims will be one of the biggest pre-draft risers among receivers - so much so that the Dolphins shouldn't think twice about making him the fourth wideout off the board. The next step after landing Tua is surrounding him with talented playmakers, and this pick would do just that. - Wilkins19. Las Vegas Raiders (from CHI) - Xavier McKinney, S, AlabamaThe Raiders targeted a premier receiver prospect with their first pick and can upgrade the secondary with another Alabama player here. McKinney profiles as an excellent fit on Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden's roster, and he can immediately slot in next to 2019 first-rounder Johnathan Abram. Vegas is building an exciting, young roster as it moves into a new home. - Alessandrini 20. Jacksonville Jaguars (from LAR) - Kristian Fulton, CB, LSUThis impressive corner from LSU might be a slight reach at No. 20, but the Jaguars desperately need help in their secondary. Fulton's tracking ability on the ball is among the best in this draft, and he can be a starter on Day 1 for the revamped Jacksonville defense - Belbeck21. Philadelphia Eagles - Patrick Queen, LB, LSUThe Eagles didn't get involved in the expensive linebacker market during free agency, leaving the position as one of the team's few pressing needs. Queen is an athletic three-down contributor who could lead an NFL defense for many years. - Wilkins22. Minnesota Vikings (from BUF) - Justin Jefferson, WR, LSUGregory Shamus / Getty Images Sport / GettySimilar to San Francisco's strategy at No. 13, the Vikings can replace a departed player with a rookie by using the draft slot they acquired in the original deal. Jefferson is coming off an incredible season at LSU, and his skill set should mesh well with that of Kirk Cousins. He's exactly what the Vikings need after trading star receiver Stefon Diggs to Buffalo. - Alessandrini 23. New England Patriots - Jordan Love, QB, Utah State The Patriots might not wait long to grab Tom Brady's potential successor, as Bill Belichick could opt to grab the upside associated with Love. The quarterback showed flashes of talent throughout his collegiate career but his final season was disappointing overall. That means he could drop to No. 23 and join New England's quarterback room. - Belbeck24. New Orleans Saints - Jeff Gladney, CB, TCUSet on making much-needed upgrades at cornerback, the Saints were reportedly in the mix for Chris Harris before he landed a deal with the Chargers. Gladney would be another attractive option who could make an immediate impact, and he'd join free-agent addition Malcolm Jenkins in helping the Saints' secondary go from a weakness to a strength. - Wilkins25. Minnesota Vikings - Yetur Gross-Matos, Edge, Penn StateMinnesota's secondary could stand to improve, but Gross-Matos presents more value than any cornerback prospect does at this draft slot. The Vikings won't be retaining pass-rusher Everson Griffen, so adding a high-quality piece opposite Danielle Hunter will also be a top priority for head coach Mike Zimmer. Gross-Matos is dripping with upside and is simply too talented to pass up this late in Round 1. - Alessandrini 26. Miami Dolphins (from HOU) - Austin Jackson, OT, USCIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyAfter grabbing a quarterback and a receiver, the Dolphins can add another vital piece to their offense in Jackson. He's a bit of a project, but he's also a gifted athlete, making his ceiling as a tackle extremely high. - Belbeck27. Seattle Seahawks - Trevon Diggs, CB, AlabamaA trade to acquire Quinton Dunbar from the Redskins shouldn't stop the Seahawks from doubling down and bolstering their cornerback spot, which was an issue for the team last year. Adding Diggs to play alongside Dunbar, Shaquill Griffin, Tre Flowers, and Quandre Diggs would give the Seahawks their most talented secondary since the Legion of Boom. - Wilkins28. Baltimore Ravens - Zack Baun, Edge, WisconsinBaltimore recently placed the franchise tag on Matthew Judon, but the move likely won't stop the franchise from adding a versatile player opposite him. Baun can do it all - he sets the edge versus the run, covers in space, and provides a major boost as a pass-rusher. If Judon is traded in 2020, this pick would look even better for the cap-strapped Ravens. - Alessandrini 29. Tennessee Titans - Jaylon Johnson, CB, UtahWith Logan Ryan likely out the door, the Titans can add some cornerback depth with the versatile Johnson. The former Ute was as good at locking down receivers as any defensive back in the Pac-12 last season, and he'd bring some physicality to the Titans' secondary. - Belbeck30. Green Bay Packers - Kenneth Murray, LB, OklahomaRon Jenkins / Getty ImagesChristian Kirksey may prove to be a major part of the solution for the Packers' issues at inside linebacker, but they shouldn't stop there. Murray's ability as a three-down linebacker, as well as his leadership, would solidify the middle of Green Bay's defense for the foreseeable future. - Wilkins31. San Francisco 49ers - Cesar Ruiz, OL, MichiganNot only would Ruiz fill a need along the Niners' offensive line, but his advanced instincts and plus athleticism make him a perfect fit for Kyle Shanahan's scheme. Ruiz is also the top prospect at a valuable position, so a first-round selection is likely in his future. - Alessandrini 32. Kansas City Chiefs - Grant Delpit, S, LSUThe Chiefs aren't in dire need of a safety, but they'll opt for the best player available by taking the former LSU star here. Delpit was a massive part of the Tigers' national championship-winning outfit, and he was projected to be a top-20 pick for most of the season. He'll end up in a great landing spot here, where he can learn from another former LSU star in Tyrann Mathieu. - BelbeckCopyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. He's entering the final season of a three-year, $10.5-million extension signed in 2018.Dunbar now jumps from a 3-13 outfit to a Seahawks team that went 11-5 and reached the divisional round of the playoffs in 2019. Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. After two decades with Tom Brady at the helm, the Patriots will enter this season with a new quarterback. Oddsmakers expect a new one the following year, too.Deshaun Watson (+350) is the early favorite to take the reins in New England in 2021, the final year of his rookie deal with the Texans. He's followed by current Pats QB Jarrett Stidham (+500), the likely starter in 2020, and potential No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence (+500) out of Clemson.Stidham is a worthwhile bet at this stage, but the other two would require a wild trade or unforeseen tank job by New England. Is there value elsewhere? Here are the odds for the Patriots' 2021 starter, with a few potential early options outside of the top three favorites:QUARTERBACKODDSDeshaun Watson+350Jarrett Stidham+500Trevor Lawrence+500Kyle Trask+700Dak Prescott+900Jacoby Brissett+1100Andy Dalton+1200Cam Newton+1200Derek Carr+1200Matthew Stafford+1200Taysom Hill+1200Mac Jones+1600Brian Hoyer+2000Ryan Fitzpatrick+2000Sam Ehlinger+2500JT Daniels+3300Aaron Rodgers+5000Patrick Mahomes+10000Jacoby Brissett (+1100)This is such a slam-dunk bet that I'm surprised it's not the favorite. New England selected Brissett in the third round of the 2016 draft before shipping him to Indianapolis, where he started 30 games over the last three years with mixed results.Brissett has his limitations, but he flashed the upside of an above-average QB last season and could benefit from a simplified approach under the Patriots' offensive staff. His contract expires after this year, and he's likely lost his grip on the Colts' job, opening the door for a New England return. At 11-1 odds, this is a bet worth making.Matthew Stafford (+1200)Most QB-to-Foxborough rumors are garbage, but the Stafford buzz at least makes some sense on the surface: the Lions haven't won a playoff game since 1991, and they could look for new life at the quarterback position after this season - especially if Stafford can't stay healthy.Could former Patriots assistant Matt Patricia ship his starting signal-caller back to his old boss as part of a reset for the franchise? It might make sense for both sides, though maybe not enough to pay a relatively short price at 12-1.Brian Hoyer (+2000)So what if Hoyer would be 35 by the start of the 2021 season? He can't seem to quit the Patriots, who have employed him three different times over the last 11 years and will give him a chance to compete for the starting job this season. If he does wrestle the starting job away from Stidham this year, 20-1 odds will look foolish next summer. Even if he doesn't, there's enough interest from both sides each year that Hoyer should always be in the discussion as a Week 1 starter.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. The NFL's free-agency period is still ongoing, but the first week provided most of the fireworks for teams looking to compete next year. It also left enough time for some to lose their luster in bettors' eyes. Here are five winners and three losers from a betting perspective after the first week of free agency.WinnersTampa Bay BuccaneersThe Buccaneers are the biggest winners after luring Tom Brady away from the New England Patriots. Their title odds moved to 14-1, which is tied for the fourth-shortest price among Super Bowl favorites, and they're likely not done, either. Some of the top remaining free agents may flock to Tampa Bay now that Brady's in town.Indianapolis ColtsIt wasn't as flashy as the Brady signing, but the Colts found themselves a new quarterback in Philip Rivers, who helped tighten their Super Bowl odds from 40-1 to 20-1. As of Monday, Indianapolis ranks first in PFF's "improvement index" by wins above replacement after this month's moves, which also included trading for All-Pro lineman DeForest Buckner.Arizona CardinalsThe Cardinals made a few under-the-radar deals and one giant splash this month, with the latter being their trade with the Houston Texans for wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Outside of Brady, Hopkins is arguably the most valuable player any team added this offseason, and the odds reflect that; Arizona went from 80-1 to 40-1 to win it all.Buffalo BillsMany of the Bills' moves during free agency were quiet - save for trading a boatload of picks for star receiver Stefon Diggs - but the team amassed talent around the edges while mostly keeping its starting unit from a year ago intact. Brady's exodus from the AFC East is also a significant boon for Buffalo, which enters next year as a legitimate contender for the division crown.New York GiantsYou're likely not betting on the Giants to win the Super Bowl, but maybe you should after a busy free-agency period. Two marquee signings - cornerback James Bradberry and linebacker Blake Martinez - addressed gaping holes in last year's disastrous defense. Few teams improved as much as New York did, which went from 80-1 to 50-1 to win it all.LosersNew England PatriotsIt's not just about Brady, as the Patriots also said goodbye to key linebackers Kyle Van Noy and Jamie Collins Sr., and did little to fill the gaps left by those three major departures. There's a reason New England's odds moved from 12-1 to 30-1, and even that price feels short without another move at quarterback.Houston TexansThe Texans are losers with a capital "L" after giving away Hopkins to the Cardinals, and they also lost top defensive lineman D.J. Reader to the Cincinnati Bengals after a year in which their defense was already disappointing. Houston opened 30-1 but has seen its odds balloon to 80-1, which isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of the team's offseason activity.Los Angeles RamsWhether you think Todd Gurley was worth the money (he wasn't), it's hard to say the Rams are better after losing a former All-Pro who still amassed 1,064 yards and 14 touchdowns a year ago. They also parted ways with three of their top defenders from 2019. The exodus may not be over, either, so stay away from their current 40-1 price.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. The Jadeveon Clowney sweepstakes didn't heat up as expected when free agency opened one week ago, and he's not the only notable veteran still looking for work. Here's a list of the top 10 available free agents and the team best suited to sign each one.Jadeveon Clowney âž¡ï¸ Seattle SeahawksWord on the street is that Clowney could accept a one-year deal, allowing him to hit the market again next year after, presumably, tallying more than three sacks. If that's the case, he and the Seahawks might as well extend their partnership. Clowney and Seattle appeared to enjoy each other's company in 2019, and the edge rusher would probably prefer not to learn another new system if he's going to re-enter free agency in 2021. If playing for a contender is atop his priorities as it was one year ago, the Seahawks are, again, a fit.Robby Anderson âž¡ï¸ Green Bay PackersAnderson is another player whose market has been surprisingly lukewarm, and the Packers are in a position to take advantage. Green Bay made a run at signing Emmanuel Sanders before he latched on with the New Orleans Saints, so we know they're sniffing around the receiver market. The Packers desperately need a second wideout to take pressure off Davante Adams.Everson Griffen âž¡ï¸ Dallas CowboysAdam Bettcher / Getty Images Sport / GettyGriffen is a logical candidate to replace Robert Quinn, who surprisingly emerged as the Cowboys' top pass-rusher last season. At 32, Griffen won't command a long-term commitment, and that's important for the Cowboys, who are operating on a tight budget. Dallas would be wise to sign a veteran pass-rusher to pair with DeMarcus Lawrence - who struggled last year - rather than rely on the unpredictability that accompanies prospects in the draft.Devonta Freeman âž¡ï¸ Los Angeles RamsThe Rams rely too heavily on the running game to enter the season with a crop of unproven rushers. Freeman, who's coming off a couple of injury-plagued years with the Atlanta Falcons, shouldn't cost much. If healthy, the 28-year-old could ascend past Darrell Henderson, Malcolm Brown, and John Kelly and take over as the featured tailback.Jameis Winston âž¡ï¸ Pittsburgh SteelersMason Rudolph isn't the answer in the long or short term should Ben Roethlisberger miss time with injury again. It wouldn't be out of character for the Steelers to sign a high-upside backup like Winston - in the past they've taken fliers on Byron Leftwich and Michael Vick. Like Roethlisberger, Winston is a natural gunslinger, meaning the Steelers would hardly need to adjust their system if he was pressed into action.Clay Matthews âž¡ï¸ Baltimore RavensIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyBaltimore pursued Matthews in free agency a year ago, but he wound up taking a deal with the Rams. The 33-year-old had eight sacks in 13 games for Los Angeles, proving he still has some juice left in the tank. The Ravens have the defensive depth necessary to limit Matthews' snaps, which should help maximize his productivity.Logan Ryan âž¡ï¸ Tampa Bay BuccaneersWith Tom Brady in the fold, the Buccaneers can't waste time patching up their secondary. Ryan is valuable in that he can hold up on the perimeter and in the slot. He'd also serve as a veteran presence for a group of young Bucs cornerbacks. Ryan has championship pedigree from his days playing alongside Brady in New England, and Tampa figures to target players like him as it looks to quickly establish a winning culture.Jason Peters âž¡ï¸ Cleveland BrownsThe Browns shelled out major dollars to Jack Conklin at right tackle but still have a gaping hole on the opposite side of the line. Even if Peters is past his prime, he's still an adequate blind-side protector who won't require a commitment beyond one year. He's also familiar with Browns general manager Andrew Berry, who worked in the Philadelphia Eagles' front office last season.Breshad Perriman âž¡ï¸ Minnesota VikingsGregory Shamus / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Vikings have to do something at receiver after trading Stefon Diggs for draft picks. Even when they paired Diggs with Adam Thielen, they still suffered from a lack of depth in the passing game. Perriman posted career highs last year in catches (36), yards (645), and touchdowns (six). He's looking to build on his best season, likely with another short-term deal that could lead to a greater payday in a year or two.Ndamukong Suh âž¡ï¸ Houston TexansAfter losing D.J. Reader, the Texans have to add muscle to the interior of their defensive line. Suh is no longer the pass-rushing force he once was, but he's still excellent against the run, much like Reader was. Suh helped the Buccaneers field the top-ranked run defense a year ago and would welcome the opportunity to get back on a playoff contender after reaching the Super Bowl two years ago.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Chicago Bears and linebacker Barkevious Mingo have agreed to terms on a one-year deal, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Mingo's contract with the Bears is worth $1.187 million with $887,000 in guaranteed money, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.Mingo appeared in all 16 games for the Houston Texans last season but was limited to only 7% of his team's defensive snaps. He posted just six tackles and two quarterback hits in his first and only year with the Texans.Chicago will be Mingo's sixth career NFL team. The LSU product spent three seasons with the Cleveland Browns after they selected him sixth overall in 2013, then had one-season stints with the New England Patriots (2016), Indianapolis Colts (2017), and Seattle Seahawks (2018).Seattle sent the 29-year-old to Houston along with a 2020 third-round pick and linebacker Jacob Martin in the Jadeveon Clowney trade last August. The Bears continue to add defensive depth after reportedly signing defensive end Robert Quinn and cornerback Artie Burns. The team also re-signed veteran linebacker Danny Trevathan and safety Deon Bush.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory has filed for reinstatement to the NFL, reports ESPN's Todd Archer, citing a source. The pass-rusher will need commissioner Roger Goodell to lift his latest suspension in order to return to the field. The league now has 60 days to make a decision on Gregory's status. If his petition is successful, Gregory is expected to have another opportunity with the Cowboys, reports David Moore of the Dallas Morning News. Dallas reportedly extended his contract through 2020 last April. The NFL suspended Gregory indefinitely in February 2019 for violating its substance abuse policy and the terms of a previous conditional reinstatement. The 27-year-old was reportedly expected to apply for reinstatement heading into training camp eight months ago. A slip-up during his aftercare program and a change in his representation delayed those plans, though, sources told Moore.Gregory has been suspended four times since entering the league in 2015. He was first suspended for four games in 2016 after failing a drug test and was banished for another 10 games later that season. He received a yearlong ban in 2017. The NFL will no longer suspend players for positive marijuana tests, a stipulation of the league's new collective bargaining agreement.Gregory has played in just 28 regular-season games since 2015 while missing 52 contests - 46 due to suspensions - but he's flashed talent when on the field. The former second-round pick amassed six sacks, two forced fumbles, and 15 quarterback hits through 14 games in 2018.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
