Bills release Pryor after 2 games
The Buffalo Bills have released wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, ending his tenure with the club after just two games, the team announced on Tuesday. The 29-year-old played just 43 percent of the Bills' offensive snaps Sunday against the New York Jets after playing 83 percent on Nov. 4 against the Chicago Bears.Pryor, who was cut by the Jets on Oct. 20, will now look to join his third team this season. The Ohio State product posted 1,007 yards and four touchdowns as a member of the Cleveland Browns in 2016, but has just 492 yards and three touchdowns in the two seasons since.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Rams, Chiefs players may boycott MNF in Mexico over field conditions
Several players from the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs are strongly considering sitting out Monday night's game if it's played as scheduled in Mexico City's legendary Estadio Azteca due to poor field conditions, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The stadium's pitch is currently marred by several patchy spots and has raised concerns about player safety from all parties involved. The field was left in disarray following an Oct. 11 concert by pop star Shakira.NFL officials were reportedly expected to convene at Estadio Azteca on Tuesday to make a decision about where Monday's game would be played.
Report: Field in Mexico City 'a mess' ahead of Rams-Chiefs MNF
The football field at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, where the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to play Monday night, is "a mess," a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Field conditions have raised concerns about player safety ahead of a matchup between two of the league's top teams. The NFL is reportedly determined to keep the game in Mexico City but has discussed postponing it or moving it to Los Angeles.NFL officials were reportedly expected to meet at the stadium Tuesday and make a final decision about where the contest will be played. Both teams have begun forming backup travel plans in case the game is relocated to Los Angeles, according to Yahoo's Charles Robinson."We are working closely with the field manager at Azteca Stadium and others to ensure that we have an NFL quality surface for our game, and we are looking forward to kicking off in Mexico City on Monday night," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Monday evening. The Rams and Chiefs are both 9-1 and feature high-flying offenses.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Fantasy: Waiver Wire - Week 11
Every Monday during the season, theScore's Justin Boone will run down the recommended waiver wire pickups.Ownership percentages are based on Yahoo leagues. FAAB bids are set off a $100 budget. Only players owned in less than 60 percent of leagues are considered.Fantasy Podcast: Week 10 takeaways, and early look at waiver wireQuarterbacksWesley Hitt / Getty Images Sport / GettyDak Prescott, CowboysNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat ATL35%$2Prescott has quietly been putting up QB1 numbers in fantasy over the last month, with his rushing production and Amari Cooper's arrival helping his cause in recent weeks. The Falcons have been one of the most generous pass defenses in the league this season, allowing six different quarterbacks to throw for at least three touchdowns against them. With six teams on bye, Prescott should be high on your list of streaming options as he has a solid schedule the rest of the way.Marcus Mariota, TitansNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat IND30%$2With Mariota finally healthy, the Titans' offense is starting to develop a little swagger. The fourth-year QB has multiple touchdowns in back-to-back games and, like Prescott, is adding fantasy points with his legs. The Colts have been playing better defense this year, but they've still given up multiple passing scores to the last five real quarterbacks they faced - we're not counting their Week 7 opponent, the Bills. It's possible Mariota's injury is what slowed this team down earlier in the season.Lamar Jackson, RavensNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. CIN8%$1The most recent reports have the Ravens as "hopeful" that Joe Flacco will be able to play through his hip injury. It's a situation that fantasy owners will have to monitor with the team coming off its bye. For the time being, Jackson should be owned in most leagues. We’ve seen the advantage mobile quarterbacks have in fantasy and combined with the Ravens' schedule, Jackson has late-season breakout appeal. Over the next five weeks, Baltimore will square off with the Bengals, Raiders, Falcons, Chiefs, and Bucs - some of the worst defenses the NFL has to offer. It's a long shot, but his upside makes him worth rostering till we know more.Other options: Eli Manning vs. TB (17 percent owned), Josh Rosen vs. OAK (4 percent owned), Blake Bortles vs. PIT (22 percent owned)Running BacksOtto Greule Jr / Getty Images Sport / GettyRashaad Penny/Mike Davis, SeahawksNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat CLE15%/52%$17/$12Davis was the recommended pickup in this space last week. While he delivered with 15 touches for 80 yards and a touchdown, it was Penny who stole the spotlight with 12 carries, 108 yards, and a score. The veteran out-snapped and out-touched his rookie teammate, so we're likely still looking at a timeshare if Chris Carson is ruled out for Thursday night's contest with the Packers. Head coach Pete Carroll said Carson is expected to suit up, but Carroll has a history of misleading predictions about player availability. The team's first-round investment in Penny still looms over this backfield and could incentivize the 4-5 Seahawks to give their young back more work as they fall out of playoff contention and shift their focus to next season. In a week where there aren't many strong running back options, Penny's ceiling and Davis' steady production have them at the top of this list.Doug Martin, RaidersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat ARI45%$14Martin has done a fine job taking over as the lead back, averaging 83 yards from scrimmage per game over the last three weeks. Unfortunately, he hasn't found the end zone while playing in a struggling Raiders offense that offers few scoring opportunities. Martin doesn't make for a great long-term solution, but in Week 11, he'll take on the Cardinals, who permit the most fantasy points to running backs. It's a game Oakland should be able to stay competitive in, making Martin a borderline RB2, if only for one week.Royce Freeman, BroncosNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat LAC52%$9Freeman was providing fantasy owners with flex numbers before being sidelined since Week 7 with a high ankle sprain. The Broncos are expecting him to return to the lineup this week, where he will rejoin a committee backfield that features a lot of Phillip Lindsay and a bit of Devontae Booker. The real reason to scoop up Freeman is Denver's schedule over the final month of the fantasy season. From Week 13 on, the Broncos play the Bengals, 49ers, Browns, and Raiders. If Lindsay were to miss time down the stretch, Freeman has league-winning upside.Derrick Henry, TitansNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat IND48%$9As the Titans' offense improves, so does Henry's fantasy outlook. Positive game scripts and goal-line carries are his best shot to return value, and we've seen him reach the end zone four times over his last three games. Henry will remain a touchdown-dependent flex option, but he would catapult up the fantasy ranks if Dion Lewis suffered an injury.Josh Adams, EaglesNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat NO13%$9Adams led the Eagles' backfield in rushing for the second straight game, prompting head coach Doug Pederson to state that the rookie will get more work moving forward. The committee approach isn't going away, but Adams is now the back to own in Philadelphia. The bad news is that he'll collide with the Saints' stout run defense in Week 11, so temper expectations.Other options: Elijah McGuire on Bye (18 percent owned), Frank Gore on Bye (27 percent owned), Theo Riddick vs. CAR (12 percent owned), Giovani Bernard at BAL (25 percent owned), Nyheim Hines vs. TEN (26 percent owned), Ty Montgomery vs. CIN (14 percent owned), Spencer Ware vs. LAR (8 percent owned), Malcolm Brown vs. KC (5 percent owned), Ronald Jones at NYG (8 percent owned)Wide ReceiversDustin Bradford / Getty Images Sport / GettyCourtland Sutton, BroncosNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat LAC55%$39Even with the Demaryius Thomas trade, Sutton remains available in 45 percent of leagues. Perhaps some owners were forced to drop him over the Broncos' bye week, but Sutton has 50 yards or a touchdown in six straight outings. If he's available, he's the number one waiver wire pickup this week.Donte Moncrief, JaguarsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. PIT11%$14It's scary to roster a Blake Bortles receiver, but hear me out. In Moncrief's last six games, he's gone over 75 yards four times. That includes a 3-98-1 stat line against the Colts in Week 10. He's emerged as Jacksonville's top receiver, leading the group in most categories. The Jags' receiving corps faces one of the easiest schedules for the remainder of the season, making Moncrief a borderline WR3.Anthony Miller, BearsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. MIN14%$14Even with Allen Robinson back in the lineup and dominating with 133 yards and two touchdowns, Miller produced his best day as a pro with five catches, 122 yards, and a score. Miller also set a season high by playing on 74 percent of the Bears' offensive snaps. The second-rounder was one of my favorite prospects in this year's draft class and we're seeing him come into his own in one of the league's best young offenses.Josh Reynolds, RamsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. KC2%$14Cooper Kupp will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, which thrusts Reynolds back into the lineup in three-receiver sets. When Kupp was out in Week 8, Reynolds turned five targets into 42 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Playing in the Rams' offense, he'll be a sneaky fantasy starter, especially in this week's high-scoring Monday night showdown with the Chiefs.Chris Godwin, BuccaneersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat NYG44%$9Godwin is the WR35 in standard scoring leagues with 37 receptions, 484 yards, and four touchdowns on the season. He has 50 yards or a touchdown in six of his nine contests and just posted season highs in catches (7) and yards (103) against the Redskins. As long as the offense doesn't fall off while head coach Dirk Koetter circles the drain, Godwin will continue to be a fringe WR3.Other options: Keke Coutee at WAS (19 percent owned), Tre'Quan Smith vs. PHI (33 percent owned), Tyrell Williams vs. DEN (54 percent owned), John Ross at BAL (17 percent owned), Christian Kirk vs. OAK (33 percent owned), Josh Doctson vs. HOU (10 percent owned)Tight EndsJulio Aguilar / Getty Images Sport / GettyVance McDonald, SteelersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat JAX52%$9McDonald has made this column several times as one of the best streamers on the market. In Week 11, he gets a Jaguars defense that just gave up four touchdowns to Colts tight ends on Sunday. If you're in need of help at the position, McDonald could be deployed as your full-time starter down the stretch.Gerald Everett, RamsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. KC1%$1Like Reynolds, Everett should see increased targets with Kupp sidelined. Since there aren't many surefire bye-week fill-ins at tight end, why not go with a skilled sophomore playing in a prolific offense that's about to engage in a game with the highest projected point total of all time at 63.5.Other options: Ricky Seals-Jones vs. OAK (17 percent owned), Chris Herndon on Bye (13 percent owned), Jeff Heuerman at LAC (5 percent owned), Nick Vannett vs. GB (5 percent owned), Jordan Thomas at WAS (3 percent owned)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Aikman picks Cowboys to win NFC East 1 week after calling for overhaul
Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman predicted Tuesday that the Dallas Cowboys will win the NFC East, just one week after he said his former team required a "complete overhaul.""Right now, if I had to pick someone, I'd pick Dallas," the FOX NFL analyst said on his weekly radio appearance with "The Musers" on KTCK-FM 96.7 The Ticket, according to Jori Epstein of USA TODAY.Aikman's prediction comes after the Cowboys went into Philadelphia and walked out with a win against the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles, improving their record to 4-5. Before that game, Aikman said the Cowboys were suffering from "a lot of dysfunction" within the organization. On his radio appearance, Aikman added that he expects the NFC East to come down to the 4-5 Cowboys and the Washington Redskins, who sit atop the division with a 6-3 record."The Thanksgiving game (between them) is huge," he said. "If Dallas can keep it within two games going into Thanksgiving, win that game, I think they're positioned well."Aikman also gave quarterback Dak Prescott, who's been a lightning rod for criticism at times this year, a vote of confidence."I'm a big Dak Prescott fan, was really happy for him to come out and respond the way he did," Aikman said of his performance against the Eagles. "If you do invest that money in him, you know what you're going to get. With Dak, I know he'll be even more committed to being great and helping (the) team win (a) championship."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Steelers' Tomlin: 'So be it' if Bell doesn't report by deadline
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin remained rather neutral Tuesday when discussing the prospect of running back Le'Veon Bell returning to the team before the 4 p.m. ET deadline."I've told you guys consistently a reaction comes from me if and when he walks in the door," Tomlin said, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.Bell will be ineligible to play for the remainder of the season if he doesn't report to the team before the deadline."So be it," Tomlin said when asked how'd he react if the running back doesn't show up.Tomlin also said he hasn't thought "one iota" about whether Bell will ever play for him or the Steelers again, according to NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Defensive Line All-Stars: A look back at Week 10's standouts
After another slate filled with sacks, stops, and stuffs, let's break down the standout defensive linemen from Week 10:Defensive Lineman of the Week: Aaron Donald, Los Angeles RamsIt might be time to rename this award after Aaron Donald. You know someone is special when they finish with multiple sacks in a game and it feels normal, but that’s the point we've reached with Donald, the best defensive player on the planet (and it's not even close). In the past, Donald has routinely made mincemeat out of the Seattle Seahawks' offensive line, and Sunday was no different, as he finished with four tackles, five quarterback hits, and 2.5 sacks.Famed for his sublime footwork and array of pass-rush moves, Donald also has the ability to win with pure power and leverage. His first sack against Seattle is a great example:Here, Donald's lined up with an outside shade over Seahawks left guard J.R. Sweezy. Once the ball is snapped, Donald subtly widens his angle before attacking Sweezy's centerline with an old-school bull rush.At 6-foot-1, Donald has a natural leverage over offensive linemen, and it shows on this sack, as he's able to bully Sweezy into the backfield before yanking Russell Wilson down with just one hand. Donald's angle of attack also condenses the pocket and cuts off Wilson's ability to step up and avoid pressure.Of course, Donald also showed off his array of pass-rush moves against Seattle. The play below might have been his most impressive rush of the game, even though he shared the sack with Ndamukong Suh:Here, Donald, who's aligned with an outside shade over Sweezy, demonstrates his unique ability to sequence his pass-rush moves together. Donald's supposed to be running a stunt with the defensive end, but improvises to reach the quarterback. After the ball is snapped, Donald immediately lands a two-hand swipe that knocks Sweezy's hands away. He's able to reach Sweezy's edge, but his rush lane gets condensed by Seahawks left tackle Duane Brown. However, as the defensive end looks to loop around, Donald spins back inside and gets in perfect position to make the sack.Donald makes it look easy, but everything he’s doing is anything but. He's a generational talent, and we're lucky to witness his greatness every week.Pass Rush of the Week: Khalil Mack, Chicago BearsAfter missing two games, Khalil Mack wasted no time making his presence felt against the Detroit Lions, finishing with five tackles and two sacks. His second was particularly impressive, as he beat two blockers on his way to the sack:On this play, Mack's lined up in a two-point stance outside Lions tight end Levine Toilolo. Once the ball is snapped, he slides past Toilolo while disrupting his route. From there, Mack quickly regains his balance and makes contact with the left tackle using proper pad level and inside hand placement.Because of that pad level and hand placement - along with raw power - Mack's able to run over the left tackle on his way to the sack (the left guard stepping on the left tackle's foot certainly helps, too).Mack is one of the unique talents in the NFL who can still be an effective pass-rusher even when he’s getting chipped and double-teamed. The Mack Attack is back, and the NFL should be very afraid.Run Defender of the Week: Calais Campbell, Jacksonville JaguarsHere at the D-Line All-Stars headquarters, we're not afraid to highlight an excellent performance in a defeat. We care about the quality of snaps, not the final score. And with that, it’s time to feature Calais Campbell's dominant performance against the run on Sunday.Again, the Jacksonville Jaguars lost in Week 10, but it wasn’t because of Campbell, who finished with five stops against the Indianapolis Colts, including two for loss. Campbell's size, length, strength, and effective hand techniques were too much for the Colts' offensive line. Here’s an example:Here, Campbell's aligned head-up across from right tackle Braden Smith. After the ball is snapped, Campbell fires out of his stance with proper pad level and body and hand placement. This allows Campbell to quickly toss aside Smith as the running back receives the ball, and then make the tackle as the ball-carrier reaches the line of scrimmage. It’s rare to see a 300-pound man make a tackle near the line of scrimmage from the backside of a run, as it typically happens when a defender is left unblocked. In this case, Campbell's ability to dominate at the point of attack allows him to go all the way from the backside B-gap to the front-side C-gap (four gaps away) to make the tackle. The Jaguars have disappointed this season, but Campbell definitely hasn’t. His performance in Week 10 was just the latest example. In the Spotlight: Chris Jones, DT, Kansas City ChiefsEven though Dee Ford and Justin Houston receive most of the attention, Chris Jones deserves credit as the third musketeer of dominance in Kansas City's front seven. Against the Arizona Cardinals, Jones was at his best, accumulating three tackles, three quarterback hits, and two sacks in a game where he constantly harassed rookie quarterback Josh Rosen.Jones is a wonderful combination of size, quickness, and improving technique. On his last sack of the game, he demonstrated his quick feet, impressive conceptual understanding of how to rush the passer, and excellent timing with his hands:On this play, Jones is aligned slightly outside left guard Mike Iupati. Once the ball is snapped, Jones doesn’t explode out of his stance, but instead attempts to draw out Iupati’s strike by stutter-stepping once he gets within range, exposing his chest for Iupati to grab.Unfortunately for Iupati, Jones parries the strike with a perfectly timed club-rip move and then gets to his edge. From there, Jones bounces off the running back’s chip block and continues upfield to sack Josh Rosen, who'd just escaped Ford's grasp. Not many interior defenders have the ability to set up and execute that sequence as fluidly as Jones did. Instead of attempting to barrel his way through blocks, he does an impressive job of setting up and executing timing-based moves, making him an extremely dangerous defender because he can still physically dominate at the point of attack at times. It’s just not his only option anymore. The Chiefs' defense has struggled at points this season, but unlike a lot of bad units, it has a few extremely talented individuals who can make big plays at key moments. Jones is one of those players, and he has the ability to make life difficult for opposing offenses, which is all the high-scoring Chiefs need right now.John Owning is a football writer at theScore. NFL Power Rankings - Week 11: Pats pushed from AFC's top 3, Cowboys rebound
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors, including Mike Alessandrini, Jack Browne, Michael McClymont, and Arun Srinivasan.1. New Orleans Saints (8-1)Previous Rank: 1The Saints' throbbing of the Bengals in Cincinnati shows that Who Dat Nation can dominate both at home and on the road. We're not sure who can stop Sean Payton's offense. - Alessandrini2. Los Angeles Rams (9-1)Previous Rank: 2Damn you, injuries! Hopefully, the loss of Cooper Kupp doesn't derail what's been one of this season's most entertaining teams. - McClymont3. Kansas City Chiefs (9-1)Previous Rank: 4It felt wrong to have this one-loss outfit ranked fourth the past number of weeks. Consider this a correction. - McClymont4. Los Angeles Chargers (7-2)Previous Rank: 5Quietly, the Chargers have won six straight, have only lost to the Chiefs and Rams, and have just three teams with a winning record left on their schedule. - McClymont5. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2-1)Previous Rank: 7Don't look now, but Big Ben has quietly forced his way into the MVP race after his best performance of the season, drubbing the red-hot Panthers in prime time. - Srinivasan6. New England Patriots (7-3)Previous Rank: 3Where did that performance come from? The Pats looked lost on offense against the Titans. Luckily, a trip to the free-falling Jets is next. - Browne7. Minnesota Vikings (5-3-1)Previous Rank: 8Coming off their bye, the Vikings' time to pounce is now with a prime-time game against the division-leading Bears. - Srinivasan8. Houston Texans (6-3)Previous Rank: 9Houston is getting healthier coming off its bye, which is bad news for future opponents. - Alessandrini9. Chicago Bears (6-3)Previous Rank: 10The Vikings will be the ultimate test of whether the Bears are for real. If they win, the path to the playoffs seems clear; if they lose, they risk being lost in the deep mix of NFC playoff contenders. - Srinivasan10. Carolina Panthers (6-3)Previous Rank: 6Cam Newton and the Panthers laid an egg on Thursday Night Football just as we thought they were for real. Even still, Newton is in the midst of a legitimate MVP-caliber campaign. - - Alessandrini11. Washington Redskins (6-3)Previous Rank: 13The rest of the NFC East apparently has no desire to win the division. The Redskins lack sizzle, but they're the East's most consistent team this season. - Browne12. Green Bay Packers (4-4-1)Previous Rank: 16It's been difficult to get a read on the Packers, but it's certainly promising that Aaron Rodgers hasn't thrown an interception since the last week of September. - Srinivasan13. Seattle Seahawks (4-5)Previous Rank: 15Full credit to the Seahawks for being one of the NFL's most competitive clubs. Unfortunately, their minefield of a schedule will knock them out of the playoff picture before long. - McClymont14. Cincinnati Bengals (5-4)Previous Rank: 11The Bengals' defense couldn't get off the field against the Saints. The team is now in serious danger of falling into a hole with the Ravens looming. - Srinivasan15. Tennessee Titans (5-4)Previous Rank: 19Tennessee's bizarre season continued with an impressive win over the Patriots. Don't sleep on Mike Vrabel's squad, which owns the NFL's top scoring defense. - Alessandrini16. Dallas Cowboys (4-5)Previous Rank: 21It wasn't pretty, but Dallas kept its head above water by taking down the Eagles on Sunday Night Football thanks to a star performance from Ezekiel Elliott. - Browne17. Philadelphia Eagles (4-5)Previous Rank: 12Philly's fall is a stark reminder at how hard it is to stay at the top of the NFL. - Browne18. Atlanta Falcons (4-5)Previous Rank: 14Julio Jones scored again, but the Falcons put up a dud in Cleveland. With a tough final seven games ahead, Atlanta's season looks all but lost. - Alessandrini19. Baltimore Ravens (4-5)Previous Rank: 17Hopefully, the bye provided some much-needed rest and regrouping for the Ravens, who could be out of the divisional race, for all intents and purposes, with a loss to the Bengals. - Srinivasan20. Miami Dolphins (5-5)Previous Rank: 18Miami has finally fallen back to .500 after overachieving to start the year. A wild-card spot is still technically in the cards, but the Dolphins don't look capable of staying in the race. - Browne21. Indianapolis Colts (4-5)Previous Rank: 24Don't look now, but the Colts are rolling. Winning the AFC South isn't out of the question, and Frank Reich is a legitimate Coach of the Year candidate. - Alessandrini22. Cleveland Browns (3-6-1)Previous Rank: 27Let's hope that Baker Mayfield continues to wake up "feeling real dangerous" on Sundays. - Srinivasan23. Denver Broncos (3-6)Previous Rank: 23Denver's final stretch will determine the futures of both Case Keenum and head coach Vance Joseph. - McClymont24. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-6)Previous Rank: 20Currently last in the AFC South, Jacksonville's shocking decline has been one of the top stories of the season. It doesn't look like things will get better anytime soon. - Alessandrini25. Detroit Lions (3-6)Previous Rank: 22Nine games into his first year as head coach, is it too early to put Matt Patricia on the hot seat? - Srinivasan26. Buffalo Bills (3-7)Previous Rank: 31Buffalo's season continues to be unpredictable, with Matt Barkley looking shockingly solid in a destruction of the Jets. - Browne27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-6)Previous Rank: 25Three points at home? This Bucs team is an utter mess. - Alessandrini28. Arizona Cardinals (2-7)Previous Rank: 29Larry Fitzgerald now sits second in career receiving yards. There's no way he can put up 7,000 more yards and catch Jerry Rice, right? - McClymont29. New York Jets (3-7)Previous Rank: 26New York reportedly intends to keep Todd Bowles for the rest of the season, the latest in a long list of mistakes by the downtrodden franchise. - Browne30. New York Giants (2-7)Previous Rank: 30Eli Manning turned back the clock for the Giants' game-winning drive against the 49ers, but it was clear for 90 percent of Monday Night Football that the quarterback is done. - Browne31. San Francisco 49ers (2-8)Previous Rank: 28The season was lost long ago, so might as well let Nick Mullens play out the string. He's proven to be competent enough after two prime-time appearances. - McClymont32. Oakland Raiders (1-8)Previous Rank: 32The Raiders are averaging 10 points per game during their five-game losing streak. Jerry Jones refutes rumored interest in Oklahoma's Riley
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones dismissed the notion that he's interested in replacing head coach Jason Garrett with Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley."That's pulled out of thin air. I think that Coach (Lincoln) Riley is outstanding. It doesn't surprise me because of proximity and his success but it's total speculation," Jones said Tuesday, according to Jeff Cavanaugh of 105.3 The FAN.Jones told reporters last week that he doesn't anticipate making any coaching changes this season, but it hasn't stopped reports about the Cowboys being interested in Riley. Meanwhile, Riley said he had no interest in leaving for the NFL after the Cleveland Browns fired head coach Hue Jackson in October.Jones also rejected the notion that he considered firing offensive coordinator Scott Linehan during the bye week. Linehan's called the Cowboys' offensive plays since 2014 and has officially served as the OC since 2015."We've never even contemplated the idea of Scott not calling plays," Jones said Tuesday, according to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Jets GM not on hot seat despite team's struggles
New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan's job isn't in jeopardy despite the team being 23-35 since he took over in 2015, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano reports, citing several sources.Maccagnan received praise for the trade that helped New York draft quarterback Sam Darnold, and he also has the Jets set up to enter the offseason with $100 million in cap space, allowing him to execute the 2019-focused vision he brought to team headquarters nearly four years ago.Detractors of Maccagnan, including former Jets coach Rex Ryan, would argue his moves over the last three seasons, aside from Darnold, have done little to spring New York out of long-term mediocrity.Regardless, the Jets are expected to give Maccagnan another year to turn around the franchise's fortunes. Head coach Todd Bowles, however, is expected to be fired at the end of the season.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
49ers auctioning game-worn jerseys for California wildfire relief
The San Francisco 49ers' game-worn jerseys from Monday night's loss will be auctioned off to support those affected by the Camp Fire in northern California, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The net proceeds will go to North Valley Community Foundation.George Kittle, Nick Mullens, DeForest Buckner, Kyle Juszczyk, Joe Staley, and Matt Breida all agreed to donate their autographed jerseys earlier in the day, according to general manager John Lynch. The proceeds of the game's 50/50 raffle will also be donated to NVCF. The team will, in turn, donate $50,000 to SEAL Family Foundation, the originally scheduled beneficiaries of the raffle, according to Kirk Larrabee of 247 Sports. The Paradise High Football team, consisting of 35 players, 16 cheerleaders, and eight coaches, was invited to Monday night's game at Levi's Stadium after the devastating fires tore through their community, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN."What that town, what that community has gone through, it's just heart-wrenching, gut-wrenching for all of us," Lynch said. "So, you just look for anything you can do. I think when you can take people's minds off something for a short time, of course we'd do anything possible. I think it's just a show of solidarity of our community, we've got to all stand together and reach out and help each other during a time like this."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Manning leads game-winning drive as Giants best 49ers on MNF
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) Eli Manning showed he still has what it takes to lead the kind of game-winning drive that earned him two Super Bowl MVP awards.Manning capped a 75-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard with 53 seconds left and the New York Giants snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the San Francisco 49ers 27-23 on Monday night.''It doesn't get old,'' said Manning, whose 36 game-winning drives are the third most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2004. ''It's fun. It's fun playing in those games and having a two-minute drive to win it. Those are the situations you want to be in. You want to have a chance.''The Giants (2-7) have failed to capitalize on those late-game situations this season, losing five games by seven or fewer points as part of a disappointing stretch that has put the 37-year-old Manning's status as starting quarterback in question. But Manning delivered against the 49ers (2-8) to give New York a much-needed win.''That's what Eli is really good at, engineering those come-from-behind drives,'' coach Pat Shurmur said. ''That was terrific. He hung in there and made some really good throws and got us into the end zone. That's the sign of a good quarterback.''Manning threw two TD passes to Odell Beckham Jr. and then engineered the late game-winning drive with help from a pair of third-down penalties against Malcolm Smith and Ahkello Witherspoon.Saquon Barkley then had a 23-yard catch to get the ball into the red zone and Manning connected with Shepard on third down to give the Giants the win.''I just saw man-to-man coverage,'' Shepard said. ''That's something we've been practicing. I was able to capture the outside edge and Eli put the ball in a perfect place.''Matt Breida ran for 101 yards and scored two touchdowns for the 49ers (2-8), who were unable to win consecutive games under third-string quarterback Nick Mullens. Breida's 23-yard run helped set up a 30-yard field goal by Robbie Gould that gave the Niners a 23-20 lead with 2:46 to play. But the 49ers allowed the go-ahead score and couldn't pull it out at the end as Mullens' pass from the Giants 21 sailed out of the end zone on the final play.''Those are the plays you have to make to finish the game,'' Mullens said. ''That was a moment of truth, and I didn't get the job done. I have to play better in those moments of truth. We all have to play better.''Mullens wasn't nearly as sharp as he was in his NFL debut against the Raiders on Nov. 1 when he joined Hall of Famers Jim Kelly and Fran Tarkenton as the only players with at least 250 yards passing, three touchdown passes and no interceptions in the first career game.Mullens threw for 250 yards and had an 11-yard TD pass to Breida that made it 20-10 early in the third quarter. But Mullens also threw two interceptions with the first setting up a 10-yard TD pass from Manning to Beckham .Those two connected again on a 20-yard score in the third quarter as New York rallied from 10 points down to tie the game in the second half.HARD HITNiners receiver Marquise Goodwin was hit in the helmet by Alec Ogletree on a catch late in the third quarter and briefly left the game. On his first play back in to start the fourth quarter, a pass from Mullens deflected off Goodwin's hands for the second interception of the game by B.J. Goodson . Goodwin was slow to get up after that play and went back into the medical tent for observation. Goodwin returned to the game later in the fourth quarter.BAD REACTIONWitherspoon got beat on Beckham's second TD catch and immediately threw his hands up in disgust because he didn't get the safety help he expected from Antone Exum. Teammate Richard Sherman and coaches talked to Witherspoon on the sideline to tell him not to show up a teammate.''Man up. Don't put that on tape,'' coach Kyle Shanahan said. ''We'll deal with that when we come in.''CENTURY MARKBarkley rans for 67 yards and added 33 receiving to join Eric Dickerson as the only players since the merger to gain at least 100 yards from scrimmage in eight of their first nine career games.MISSED OPPORTUNITYThe Giants entered the game converting just 40 percent of their red zone trips into TDs. They missed a golden opportunity for one late in the first half. On a third down from the 3, the 49ers left Beckham unguarded in the slot but Manning stuck with a run play to Barkley that gained only 1 yard. New York settled for a field goal that tied the game at 10.PLAYING FOR PARADISENiners GM John Lynch welcomed the high school football team from Paradise, a town destroyed by the wildfires in Butte County, about 175 miles north. Players and cheerleaders from the school were on the field for the national anthem. The Niners raised more than $100,000 to support relief and recovery efforts. The air quality for the game was at an unhealthy level because of the fires. The Air Quality Index was at 161 at kickoff, which is in the unhealthy zone, and smoke could be smelled throughout the stadium. The NFL had monitored the situation but the AQI never got near 200, the level where the game would have needed to be moved.UP NEXTGiants: Host Tampa Bay on Sunday.49ers: Visit Tampa Bay on Nov. 25.---More AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFL and https://twitter.com/AP-NFLCopyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Week 11 Monday night matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams is expected to remain at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City despite concerns about field conditions, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter."We are working closely with the field manager at Azteca Stadium and others to ensure that we have an NFL quality surface for our game, and we are looking forward to kicking off in Mexico City on Monday night," said NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy.Another source told Schefter that the game could still be relocated to Los Angeles as a true home contest for the Rams, with that decision to come later this week. The stadium in Mexico City has been used heavily for soccer games and concerts, leading to concern from the NFLPA.League officials are expected to check out the field and stadium on Tuesday morning.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Hue Jackson joining Bengals' staff in unknown role
Former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson will join the Cincinnati Bengals' coaching staff in an unknown role, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Jackson coached in Cincinnati from 2012 to 2015 in a variety of roles, ending with a two-year stint as offensive coordinator that earned him the top job in Cleveland. The Browns fired the 53-year-old at the end of October after he amassed a record of 3-36-1 during his tenure with the team. Jackson will get a chance at revenge, though, as the Bengals play the Browns in Weeks 12 and 16.It's the second significant coaching move of the day for the Bengals, who fired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin after allowing 51 points to the New Orleans Saints in Week 10. Bills release Nathan Peterman
The Buffalo Bills announced Monday that they've parted ways with quarterback Nathan Peterman following the Matt Barkley-led Week 10 victory over the New York Jets.Peterman was selected by the Bills with the 171st pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. He threw 12 interceptions to just three touchdowns in eight games over his two seasons, making four starts under center. He completed just 52.3 percent of his pass attempts while leading the team to a 1-3 record.Barkley completed 15 of 25 pass attempts for two touchdowns and no interceptions in the 41-10 road victory on Sunday. He was making his first start for the Bills after signing less than two weeks prior.Peterman, 24, was named the Bills' starter for the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens following a strong preseason, but he was pulled in favor of rookie Josh Allen after throwing two interceptions on 18 attempts with just five completions. He was forced back into action in Weeks 6 and 8 following injuries to Allen and veteran addition Derek Anderson. His final start came against the Chicago Bears in Week 9 when he completed 31 of 49 attempts for three interceptions without a passing touchdown.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Falcons activate Deion Jones from IR, not a lock to play vs. Cowboys
The Atlanta Falcons activated linebacker Deion Jones off injured reserve Monday, according to Jason Butt of The Athletic.Head coach Dan Quinn said that Jones isn't a lock to play against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday."We’ll have the same format that we had last week," Quinn said Monday, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We’ll take it step by step and see where he’s at. It’s too early to make a prediction of where he could be. He’s eligible to be back this week, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready."We will put him out there when he’s 100 percent."Jones was sent to IR after breaking his foot in the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. The No. 52 pick of the 2016 NFL Draft was named to the Pro Bowl in 2017. Gruden echoes Davis' comments following 1-8 start: 'I just want to win'
Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis took responsibility for his team's 1-8 start on Sunday, and head coach Jon Gruden followed suit Monday. It's been a nightmare beginning to the Gruden era for Oakland, with the team struggling out the gate after trading superstar Khalil Mack to the Chicago Bears days before the season. Later, the Raiders also dealt wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Dallas Cowboys prior to the trade deadline. After hearing of Davis' comments, Gruden echoed his boss' feelings."I feel Mark's pain," Gruden said on Monday, according to ESPN's Paul Gutierrez."I talk to Mark after every game and these are unpleasant conversations. It's tough, man, we want to win. We want to win. We also want to do right by this organization and some of these decisions have been really tough but I want to deliver for him and his family, certainly, and this organization and right now it's tough. But it's great to have him support me and I appreciate it. But I feel the same way he does - I just want to win."Gruden famously signed a 10-year contract worth $100 million to become the Raiders' head coach in January, starting his second stint with the organization. He previously coached the Raiders from 1998 to 2001 before winning a Super Bowl during his tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002 to 2008).Despite the brutal season to date, Davis said Gruden's job is safe."Jon's going to be the stability here," Davis said. "Jon's going nowhere. That's just the way it is.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Saints' Payton admits he broke fire alarm at Bengals' stadium
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton admitted Monday he broke the fire alarm that wouldn't stop ringing inside the visitor's locker room at Paul Brown Stadium before Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals."Clearly we were having issues with the fire alarm at a time relative to 20 minutes, 30 minutes before we're supposed to be out," Payton said, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett. "And it continued, it had gone on for 10 minutes. And I just needed the noise to stop."A report surfaced Sunday evening claiming Payton had smashed the fire alarm to pieces. The Saints bench boss told reporters it would be "a little sensationalist" to say he "destroyed" the alarm, but conceded he may have done more than give the device a slight tap in an effort to silence it.
Panthers release veteran tailback C.J. Anderson
The Carolina Panthers released tailback C.J. Anderson on Monday, ending his tenure with the club after nine games, according to Max Henson of the team's official site."When we signed C.J. in the spring he saw a bigger role than he has had, and honestly, at the time, so did we," general manager Marty Hurney said in a statement. "But Christian McCaffrey has taken so much of the offense and so much of the plays, we just made the decision that this was the best thing for all parties involved."Anderson landed with the Panthers on a one-year deal in May after he was released from the Denver Broncos. The 27-year-old spent all five of his previous NFL campaigns in Denver, rushing for a career-high 1,007 yards in 2017.Carolina signed Anderson to serve as a bruiser behind McCaffrey, but wound up giving the California product just 24 carries over nine games. Week 10 By Design: Breaking down the best plays from Sunday
The 10th week of the NFL season was full of surprises, including the Tennessee Titans blowing out the New England Patriots in Nashville and the Cleveland Browns earning Gregg Williams his first victory as interim head coach. Here's a look at the well-designed plays that made our list:Passing Design of the Week: Barkley to DawkinsWe've picked on the Buffalo Bills quite a bit this year, as their quarterback group has become a staple in the "Coverage Design of the Week" section - for all the wrong reasons. And Bills fans were surely pessimistic when Matt Barkley - signed off the street - was named the starting quarterback for Week 10 against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. However, the journeyman was solid, completing 15 of 25 passes for 232 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Buffalo's surprising 41-10 rout.Since one of those scores went to an offensive lineman, it's definitely worth breaking down. With slightly over eight minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Bills already have a 17-point lead and are looking for more. Facing a first-and-goal at the Jets' 8-yard line, they bring in an extra offensive lineman, reserve tackle Jeremiah Sirles (No. 74), and line up in an unbalanced formation, with two tackles, a guard, and a tight end on the right side. Meanwhile, tackle Dion Dawkins (No. 73) is on the left side as an eligible receiver, with another receiver outside of him:NFL/CBSBuffalo shows a running play to the right, but Barkley fakes the handoff and looks left to throw. The two wide receivers both run routes working to the right, which clears out the left flat for Dawkins. The tackle blocks on the edge and then slips into the flat undetected:NFL/CBSAt this point, Dawkins is wide open. Barkley simply flips him the ball and the big man gets himself a touchdown:At 3-7, Buffalo's on its way to another losing season, but for one afternoon, the team turned in a dominating performance - and got one of its linemen a rare trip into the end zone.Rushing Design of the Week: Chubb makes historyNick Chubb finished Sunday's victory over the Atlanta Falcons with 20 carries for 176 yards and a touchdown, while his 92-yard score set a record as the longest touchdown run in Browns franchise history. There's no question the rookie was impressive, but Cleveland’s blockers also deserve plenty of credit for making the biggest play of the day possible.Holding an 11-point lead early in the third quarter, the Browns face a second-and-10 on their own 8-yard line. They line up with two tight ends and Chubb as the lone running back:NFL/CBSThe play is a zone-blocking run design to the right, and the critical blocks up front come from left guard Joel Bitonio (No. 75), right guard Kevin Zeitler (No. 70), center JC Tretter (No. 64), and right tackle Chris Hubbard (No. 74):NFL/FOXZeitler begins the play with a defensive tackle lined up on his right (outside) shoulder. But when the ball is snapped, he's able to get outside of the defender and then seal him off toward the inside. Meanwhile, Tretter climbs to the second level immediately and handles the middle linebacker - but how is this possible considering the nose tackle is lined up across from him? The answer is that Bitonio executes a perfect reach block around that nose tackle. At the same time, Hubbard quickly gets to the outside and walls off the edge defender:NFL/FOXThose blocks open up a perfect hole for Chubb, who cuts between Zeitler and Hubbard and then right behind Tretter. The rusher makes one defender miss in the open field, and then picks up a fourth blocker of note, wide receiver Antonio Callaway, who does a great job of leading Chubb downfield:From there, Chubb races into the end zone - and the record books.Pressure Design of the Week: Titans confuse Brady, PatsSunday's most stunning result was likely the Titans knocking off the Patriots 34-10, and the game was never really in doubt. A huge part of the victory was the pressure that Tennessee's defense was able to generate on Tom Brady - who was sacked three times and hit on six occasions - as the unit turned to an interesting defensive scheme that confused blockers and frustrated the quarterback. The scheme is known as "Radar," and sees most (or all) of the players up front align in a two-point stance - just their feet on the ground - before the snap. This hides the intentions of the defenders, making it tougher to determine which players will attack the pocket and who will drop into coverage. The Titans used the Radar defense to pressure Brady on the first two plays of New England's final first-half series, and even sacked the QB on an attempted Hail Mary. They used the look again to start the second half, forcing a sack and a quick three-and-out on the Patriots' opening drive of the third quarter. That third down is the play we'll highlight below.Look at the pre-snap alignment of the Titans' defenders. Everyone's in a two-point stance, hiding their intentions:NFL/CBSUpon the snap, two of the defenders on the line of scrimmage drop off, but the Titans blitz both a linebacker and safety Kevin Byard (No. 31), who gets a running start from the second level. Brady's flushed to his right and can't escape:Defensive coordinators have been trying for years to find a way to confuse Brady and Co. Whether or not the Radar defense is the answer remains to be seen, but you can be sure other teams will try it.Coverage Design of the Week: Stroman cheats (successfully) with helpAfter holding a slim 6-3 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, the Washington Redskins scored 10 unanswered points to pull away and secure a 16-3 victory in Tampa Bay against the Buccaneers. A huge play in that final frame was an interception of Bucs quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick by rookie cornerback Greg Stroman, which set up a Washington field goal.Early in the fourth, the Buccaneers trail 13-3 but have the football on their own 30-yard line. On a first-and-10, they come out with talented tight end O.J. Howard (highlighted route) as the single receiver on the right side, in a formation that's meant to isolate him. Stroman (red box) aligns across from Howard, giving him about 9 yards of cushion:NFL/FOXFitzpatrick tries to throw a curl route to Howard, but watch how the cornerback plays it:The Redskins have two high safeties on this play, which means Stroman knows he has help over the top. So, he plays this flat-footed - reading Howard's break - and as soon as the tight end turns, Stroman cuts underneath the route for his first career interception. It was a smart bit of football by the rookie corner, who took the chance because he understood the coverage behind him. And it paid off.Game Ball: Offensive Line, Cleveland BrownsAs highlighted in the breakdown of Chubbs' big run, Cleveland's offensive line was very impressive against Atlanta. Quarterback Baker Mayfield was kept clean all afternoon, as he wasn't sacked - or even hit - throughout the game.In addition, the Browns ran the football 29 times for 211 yards - an average of 7.3 yards per carry - and posted a strong 4.3 average even without the 92-yarder. So, let's give some more recognition to Bitonio, Tretter, Zeitler, Hubbard, and left tackle Greg Robinson for a great performance.Mark Schofield writes NFL feature content for theScore. Raiders owner Mark Davis takes blame for 1-8 start
After a fifth straight loss on Sunday, the Oakland Raiders sit at 1-8, and owner Mark Davis is accepting the blame."I always look in the mirror, and the buck stops with me," Davis told ESPN's Paul Gutierrez on Sunday. "Where this team is right now is my fault. We haven't been able to build a 22-man roster. We haven't been able to give this team a chance to win because the reconstruction failed. We failed from 2014 on to have a roster right now."Davis was referring to a long-term strategy that began in 2012, in which the team would acquire three players from the draft and two in free agency every year who would serve as core pieces for the future. However, the Raiders were unable to complete the plan in several of the ensuing years. The team's owner also touched on the handling of star pass-rusher Khalil Mack, who was traded to the Chicago Bears prior to the regular season. Davis said the team approached Mack's agent, Joel Segal, during the combine regarding an extension that would have made the pass-rusher the NFL's highest-paid defensive player. According to Davis, the offer was countered with one that "was not going to happen, was not doable for us.""From that point on, (Mack) would not talk to anyone in our organization," Davis said. "Not (general manager) Reggie (McKenzie), not Jon, not anybody."(Coach) Jon (Gruden) wanted him. Everybody thinks that Jon's the one who wanted to get rid of him. Jon wanted him badly. Why wouldn't you want this guy? Reggie wanted him badly. And I wanted him badly, too. But, if in fact we were going to give the type of money that we were going to give to him, and we had Derek (Carr) on that type of a (contract), how were we going to go ahead and build this football team, with all the holes that we had?"Davis' ultimate disappointment came when discussing the fans. He hoped to leave the Bay Area with a Super Bowl before the team departs to Las Vegas."I feel so bad for the fans because they want to win," Davis said. "And believe me, there's nothing more I want than to win and there's nothing more Jon wants to do than win. Reggie wants to win. Everybody in this organization is built around winning. We don't have the tools right now to do it and it's nobody's fault but our own and when it comes down to it, it's my fault."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Norman says Redskins better on road: Home fans 'just boo everything'
Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman ripped the team's home fans Sunday after picking up another win away from the apparently unfriendly confines of FedExField."I feel like we play better on the road, I'm not gonna lie," he told Craig Hoffman of 106.7 The Fan. "It seems like our true fans, they're really with us on the road and we feed off of that. When we go into the home stands, it seems like an open bubble or something. Like the other team's turf or something. You hear more of them than you do us. Then, if something bad happens, they sulk. They sit back in their seat and they boo."The Redskins improved to 3-1 on the road after knocking off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. They're 3-2 at home.Norman, who recorded his second interception of the season Sunday, said the atmosphere in D.C. has deteriorated since he joined the club in 2016."It's kinda crazy because the first couple of years I've been here, you would see sellouts and all happy and excited and all for the Redskins, but now you go around, see the whole NFC East teams - the Philly's, the Giants, and even Dallas - they sold out," he added. "People in the seats, they're cheering for their team. Regardless good, bad, or indifferent, they still showing up each and every week going hard. Even the Giants, when they was 1-6, hell they had a sellout crowd."The Redskins rank 28th in the NFL in attendance and are filling a league-low 74.6 percent of seats for home games, despite sitting atop the NFC East."They just don't really care," Norman said of the fans in Washington. "They just boo everything. They're not really behind us. We don't really feel that. I'm tired of it. I really am."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Mayfield: 'I woke up this morning feeling real dangerous'
The Cleveland Browns snapped a four-game losing streak when they took down the Atlanta Falcons 28-16 on Sunday, and their rookie quarterback was nearly flawless in the victory.Baker Mayfield enjoyed the best game of his young career, completing 17 of his 20 attempts for 216 yards and three touchdowns while adding another 20 yards on the ground. After the game, Mayfield said he knew it was going to be a good day."I woke up this morning feeling real dangerous," Mayfield said postgame, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.The 2018 No. 1 overall pick's production and efficiency have seen a boost since the dismissals of head coach Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley.Mayfield completed nearly 70 percent of his passes for two touchdowns and 297 yards with one interception in last week's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, and he gets the Cincinnati Bengals' 32nd-ranked defense after the Browns' bye.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Dez says he wants to re-sign with Saints
Dez Bryant's time with the New Orleans Saints lasted just two practices before a torn Achilles ended his season, but the team apparently had a big impact on the wide receiver. In response to a tweet Sunday about him potentially receiving a ring if the Saints win the Super Bowl, Bryant said he intends to re-sign with New Orleans.
Buccaneers' Koetter took over play-calling before 3-point dud
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Dirk Koetter admitted Sunday he took over play-calling duties on offense before his team laid a 3-point dud against the Washington Redskins and lost for the sixth time in seven games.Koetter refused to divulge postgame why he decided to call the plays instead of offensive coordinator Todd Monken, but accepted responsibility for the Bucs' poor output."We just weren't good enough as a team," he said after falling 16-3 on Sunday, according to Austin Knoblauch of NFL.com. "That starts with me and permeates down through everybody else on the offense. To move the ball like that and only come up with three points, you're just not going to win that way."Tampa registered 501 yards of offense against Washington but failed to produce anything more than a field goal. It was the first time in NFL history that a team posted 500-plus yards of offense and was limited to three points."It starts with me and it ends with me," the embattled Koetter responded when asked about his job security. "(My future) is somebody else's decision."The 3-6 Bucs will attempt to snap a three-game losing skid in Week 11 against the 1-7 New York Giants.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lewis relishes revenge on Pats: 'That's what happens when you go cheap'
Dion Lewis got his revenge Sunday against his former team, the New England Patriots, and the Tennessee Titans running back basked in the glory of his team's victory afterward."Hell yeah it's personal," Lewis said after helping the Titans rout the Patriots 34-10 in Nashville, according to Michael Giardi of NFL Network. "That's what happens when you go cheap. You get your ass kicked."Lewis spent three seasons with the Patriots and was a key cog in the 2016 team that captured Super Bowl LI. When it came time for free agency, however, New England let him walk to Tennessee, which gave him a four-year, $19.8-million deal in March."I didn't have to prove anything," Lewis added. "I know I can play. I just had to let our team know that these guys are beatable. ... I know those guys. I know that you (can) be physical with them and let them have it and they'll fold."The 28-year-old Lewis rushed for 57 yards on 20 carries against New England, adding two catches for 11 yards in the passing game.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vrabel's Titans rout New England, snap Pats' streaks
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Tom Brady added another big chunk of NFL history to his resume. The Tennessee Titans made sure the Patriots quarterback didn't finish his 300th game. The Titans sacked Brady three times and hit him repeatedly as they beat New England 34-10 Sunday, snapping a seven-game skid against the Patriots in Mike Vrabel's first game as head coach against the team he helped win three Super Bowls. It was the most sacks allowed in a game this season by the Patriots (7-3), and coach Bill Belichick pulled Brady for Brian Hoyer midway through the fourth quarter.Only Brett Favre (326) has played in more games, both regular season and postseason, as a quarterback than Brady. The three-time NFL MVP also needed only three touchdown passes to tie Peyton Manning (579) for the NFL record for most TD passes all time for both the regular season and postseason. He left having thrown for 254 yards and no TD passes.Marcus Mariota capped each of the first two drives with TD passes, and Derrick Henry ran for a pair of TDs. Ryan Succop also added two field goals as the Titans (5-4) scored a season high in points after jumping out to a 17-3 lead in the first quarter. They now have beaten both of last season's Super Bowl teams in Nashville. The loss snaps a six-game winning streak going into New England's bye. The Patriots, who routed the Titans 35-14 in January, also lost to Tennessee for the first time since Dec. 16, 2002.Tennessee fired coach Mike Mularkey after that loss and hired Vrabel to try to recreate the Patriots' winning ways with the Titans. Vrabel hired Dean Pees, a former Patriots linebackers coach and defensive coordinator, as his defensive coordinator. General manager Jon Robinson, who started in New England, signed cornerback Malcolm Butler and running back Dion Lewis in free agency.Darius Jennings opened the game with a 58-yard kickoff return, and Mariota capped the drive with a 4-yard TD pass to Jonnu Smith. The Titans never trailed again. The Titans came in with the NFL's stingiest scoring defense and also leading the league in fewest touchdowns allowed in the red zone. They held the Patriots to a pair of 52-yard field-goal attempts by Stephen Gostkowski, who missed his second wide left. James Develin scored on a 1-yard TD run early in the second, which pulled New England within 17-10.Brady looked ready to pull off another amazing comeback, driving the Pats to the Titans 37. But the Titans stopped Brady a yard shy of the first down. A false start followed, then Ryan broke up a Brady pass to Edelman to turn the ball over. On the very next play, Vrabel called his own trick play with Jennings throwing to a wide-open Mariota for a 21-yard gain.Hoyer replaced Brady on the next drive.INJURIESPatriots left tackle Trent Brown missed the final drive of the first half and was announced as questionable to return because of illness. LaAdrian Waddle replaced him for that series, but Brown returned for the first start of the third quarter. Brown left later in the third quarter with an injured back. Receiver Julian Edelman hurt an ankle and didn't return. Tight end Dwayne Allen also hurt a knee in the third quarter.Titans running back David Fluellen picked up 16 yards on back-to-back runs, then went down untouched on the next play with a knee injury.UP NEXTPatriots: Bye, then visit Jets on Nov. 25.Titans: Visit Indianapolis.---Follow Teresa M. Report: Bengals' Green could be out until December
Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver A.J. Green may be on the sideline longer than originally anticipated. While reports claimed Green was expected to miss at least two games with a toe injury, a December return appears more likely, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. If the wideout does not re-enter the lineup until December, he'll miss at least the Bengals' next three games - against the New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens, and Cleveland Browns.Any extended absence from Green would be a massive hit to Cincinnati's offense, though Tyler Boyd and John Ross could see an increase in targets as the next two receivers on the team's depth chart. The seven-time Pro Bowler has accumulated 45 receptions, 687 yards, and six touchdowns in eight games this season.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Saints interested in signing Brandon Marshall
Still in the market for receiver help, it's believed the New Orleans Saints will attempt to sign free agent Brandon Marshall, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing league sources. The Saints inked Dez Bryant to a one-year contract earlier in the week, but he went down with a torn Achilles in his second practice.New Orleans had also brought Marshall in for a workout and are expected to pivot to signing the 13-year veteran. The 34-year-old spent the first eight weeks of the season with the Seattle Seahawks, hauling in 11 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown, but was released on Oct. 30.Should he sign, the Saints would be the seventh franchise Marshall has played for in his well-traveled career.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL betting preview: Week 10 lines, totals
Sportsbooks all over were crushed last Sunday, as some establishments lost multi-millions in NFL's Week 9. Many assume the 'books will rebound in Week 10, so let's take a deep dive into the slate to highlight the biggest line and total moves since the openers.Washington Redskins at Tampa Bay BuccaneersOpen: TB -1 / 50.5Current: TB -3 / 51The Buccaneers will close as favorites for just the third time this season and will aim to cover for the first time when laying chalk. The Redskins aren't garnering much attention, especially after losing three starters - wide receiver Paul Richardson and offensive linemen Shawn Lauvao and Brandon Scherff - to injured reserve in last week's loss to the Atlanta Falcons. It'll be a matchup of Washington's No. 25 scoring offense versus Tampa Bay's league-worst scoring defense. There's been little movement since the market shaped the line and total earlier in the week.Detroit Lions at Chicago BearsOpen: CHI -3.5 / 46.5Current: CHI -7 / 44.5The Bears have seen one of the biggest jumps from the openers, crossing some key numbers and sitting at a full seven points. Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions' offense have been outscored 52-23 in the last two weeks and mustered nine points last Sunday in their first game without wide receiver Golden Tate. A team that plays its home games in a dome will now play in 40-degree temperatures against a Chicago defense that has allowed 17 points or fewer in three of four games at Soldier Field this season. Sportsbooks will likely have teaser liabilities with the Bears at that number.Arizona Cardinals at Kansas City ChiefsOpen: KC -14 / 50Current: KC -15.5 / 49.5One of the league's public darlings unsurprisingly was bet up early in the week. The Chiefs opened as 14-point favorites, ticked up to -17, and sat -16.5 most of the week but are currently -15.5. The Cardinals will make the trip from the West Coast to play an early start on their body clocks, but Arizona does come in with extra rest off the bye week. Kansas City head coach Andy Reid is 1-4 against the number the last five times as a double-digit favorite, losing two outright. There could be rain in the forecast but not until the late afternoon.Atlanta Falcons at Cleveland BrownsOpen: ATL -2.5 / 51Current: ATL -6 / 50.5If the 'books want to avoid another losing day, the Cleveland Browns covering would be a good start.Atlanta's also crossed key numbers as huge public favorites over the slumping Browns, being pushed up to six in most shops. There's no denying the money pouring in on the Falcons, as they had attracted six times as many tickets as Cleveland at MGM 'books as of late Saturday night. The Falcons haven't covered against an AFC opponent in their last eight tries under head coach Dan Quinn.New Orleans Saints at Cincinnati BengalsOpen: NO -3.5 / 55Current: NO -5.5 / 53.5From one NFC South road favorite to another, Saints tickets have piled up over the week. New Orleans is the league's hottest team, winning its last seven, none bigger than last week's over the then-undefeated Los Angeles Rams. The Bengals come off their bye week, but a struggling offense lost its biggest weapon in A.J. Green, who will be sidelined for multiple weeks with a toe injury. New Orleans was getting 5.5 times as many bets as Cincinnati late Saturday night.New England Patriots at Tennessee Titans Open: NE -6 / 48.5Current: NE -6.5 / 47The Titans are no strangers to being home 'dogs. It'll be the fourth straight situation and the biggest number so far for Tennessee, which followed up a narrow one-point loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 7 with a Monday Night Football win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9. The New England Patriots have won six straight overall and five of the last six against the spread but will be without star tight end Rob Gronkowski. The public loves backing the Patriots, and this week is no different - MGM had six times as many New England tickets as Tennessee.Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis ColtsOpen: IND -1 / 47.5Current: IND -3 / 46.5Bettors are buying the Colts, whose offense has averaged 34.2 points per game over the last five. Indianapolis has picked up wins in consecutive weeks heading into Week 10. The Jaguars are looking to snap a four-game skid, but they do have statistics working in their favor. Road teams off a bye week are on a 60-23 run against the spread. Additionally, quarterback Blake Bortles has feasted on Indianapolis over the last six meetings, posting an average quarterback rating of 105.3, with 10 total touchdowns and zero interceptions.Buffalo Bills at New York Jets Open: NYJ -7 / 36.5Current: NYJ -7.5 / 36.5The Jets will also likely be a teaser liability despite the change under center for Week 10 against the Bills. New York rookie Sam Darnold will miss Sunday's game with a foot injury, forcing veteran backup Josh McCown into the fold. That's not the only quarterback news - Buffalo is going with Matt Barkley, who was signed by the team on Halloween. Two rusty quarterbacks leading stagnant offenses should lead to a fair share of under bets for Sunday's AFC East clash.Los Angeles Chargers at Oakland RaidersOpen: LA -7.5 / 50.5Current: LA -10 / 49.5Bettors aren't gun shy on the Chargers, who opened as touchdown-plus road favorites against the Oakland Raiders for Week 10. That line moved up to double digits, and it's clear why: It's a matchup of two teams heading in opposite directions. Los Angeles has ripped off five straight wins while the Raiders own a lone win this season. Bettors are going back to the well and fading Oakland, which is just 2-7 against the spread this season. The previous matchup wasn't close to hitting the posted number of 52 in the Chargers' 26-10 win, so this total has been bet down a full point.Miami Dolphins at Green Bay PackersOpen: GB -7.5 / 47.5Current: GB -10 / 47.5The Miami Dolphins will take a break from the humidity in Florida to play in 35-degree weather at Lambeau Field, where bettors are expecting Aaron Rodgers and the Packers to get the job done. Typically attracting money on a weekly basis, Green Bay naturally opened as a touchdown favorite but was immediately bet up to double digits throughout the week. The Pack have already had a couple close calls this season at home, including a three-point win as nine-point favorites over the San Francisco 49ers and a one-point victory over the Bears as seven-point favorites in the opener. This one's remained rather steady at -10/47.5 in most shops all week.Seattle Seahawks at Los Angeles RamsOpen: LAR -9.5 / 50.5Current: LAR -9 / 50The Rams yet again caught some steam after opening under double digits, hitting 10 before coming down to 9.5 and now sitting at -9. The Seahawks gave Los Angeles a dogfight in their Week 5 meeting - a 33-31 Rams win. L.A. is coming off its first loss of the season. Seattle has gone under the total in eight of its last nine divisional road games under head coach Pete Carroll.Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles Open: PHI -5.5 / 43.5Current: PHI -7.5 / 44Bettors weren't expecting a bounce-back from the Cowboys throughout the week, opening with the Eagles at -5.5 and moving all the way up to 7.5. Dallas lost outright as a 4.5-point favorite Monday night against the Titans, while Philadelphia is coming off its bye week. Defensively for the Cowboys, injury-riddled linebacker Sean Lee will be out until December. Offensively, Dallas is averaging just 13.3 points per game over its last six road contests. The Eagles, meanwhile, are 7-1 straight up and 6-2 against the spread over their last eight prime-time games.New York Giants at San Francisco 49ersOpen: SF -1.5 / 43.5Current: SF -3.5 / 44.5Tickets piled up against the 49ers when they announced Nick Mullens would start last Thursday against the Raiders, but the opposite could be said for Monday Night Football. Bettors are trusting the backup to put on another masterful display after the quarterback threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns against Oakland, this time against the New York Giants, pushing the opener of 1.5 past a key number to 3.5.Alex Kolodziej is theScore's betting writer. Report: Saints open to bringing Dez Bryant back in 2019
Dez Bryant wasn't able to suit up for the New Orleans Saints this year, but he may get the opportunity next season.Bryant suffered a season-ending torn Achilles this week in his second practice with his new team, but as long as he makes a full recovery the Saints are open to bringing him back in 2019, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports, citing sources.New Orleans signed Bryant to a reported one-year, $600,000 contract on Wednesday. The 30-year-old will return to the free-agent market in 2019.He's expected to miss the next six-to-nine months with the Achilles injury. Report: Cowboys won't fire Garrett midseason, interested in Oklahoma's Riley
Though Jason Garrett may be firmly on the hot seat, the Dallas Cowboys do not plan to replace their head coach midseason, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Dallas did, however, consider other changes during its Week 8 bye, specifically moving on from offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, per Rapoport. Garrett decided to keep Linehan and instead fired offensive line coach Paul Alexander.Garrett's status with the Cowboys following the 2018 season remains up in the air, as the team has struggled to a 3-5 record. If the head coach is let go, both owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones are believed to have an affinity for Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley, Rapoport added.Riley has excelled since taking over the Sooners in 2017, accumulating a 21-3 record and owning the nation's No. 2-ranked offense this season. The Cowboys have scored 19.2 points per game - 26th in the NFL - in 2018 and take on the rival Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rams' Whitworth donating paycheck to families affected by L.A. shooting
Los Angeles Rams left tackle Andrew Whitworth will donate his $60,000 paycheck this week to families affected by the shooting at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., he told NFL Network's Steve Wyche.Twelve people were killed in the shooting, which took place Thursday at an establishment about four miles from the Rams' practice facility. Whitworth, 36, lives in Thousand Oaks."As a group, everyone's affected in a different way," Whitworth said after addressing the tragedy with his teammates, according to Yahoo Sports' Shalise Manza Young. "Whether it's the fear of having your own kids that could be involved in something like that, if it's the fear of just being in that environment yourself or just living somewhere where something like that's happened."You always think it's never going to be around you or involve you, but you always see that from people once you experience it. I think we just wanted to find a way to come together and really just wrap our arms around the community that we live in and that we operate and work in."The Rams will observe a moment of silence before kickoff Sunday versus the Seattle Seahawks to honor the victims of the shooting.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc.
