5 betting tips for Week 10 of the NFL season
Need a cheat sheet or some help spotting situational edges with a new week of NFL action fast approaching? We've got you covered. Here are five spots to look at as you do your homework for Week 10.Andy Reid slumping as a double-digit favoriteIf you thought Kansas City Chiefs spreads were primed for inflation following their red-hot start, Week 10's 16.5-point line over the Arizona Cardinals is officially the longest in the NFL this season. The Chiefs are 5-0 to the under in their last five times laying double digits under head coach Andy Reid - averaging a total score of 28.4 points - and 1-4 against the spread, losing two of those games outright. Also, Arizona is on the road and coming off its bye week. Teams on the road following the bye are on a 60-23 run (72.2 percent) against the spread after all three in last weekend's situation - the Titans, Chargers, and Falcons - covered in their respective games.Seahawks streaking to the under on the road against divisional opponentsThe Seattle Seahawks versus the Los Angeles Rams will be a rematch of Week 5, when the two teams combined for more than 60 points in the Rams' 33-31 road victory. However, recent history points to a lower-scoring affair in Los Angeles for Week 10.The Seahawks are on an 8-1 run to the under when playing on the road against NFC West opponents. Only one of the nine games topped 42 points while five registered fewer than 32.Falcons scuffling versus the AFCIt was just last season that the Atlanta Falcons needed a fourth-quarter comeback over the New York Jets to avoid being swept by the AFC East. It's been a common theme under head coach Dan Quinn, as Atlanta's 0-8 against the spread in its last eight games against non-conference opponents. The Falcons lost outright to the Cincinnati Bengals as 3.5-point favorites and were handled by 24 on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers this season. The Falcons are currently -4 in most shops for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns.Cowboys' offense a no-show on the roadThe Dallas Cowboys' offense has been mired in an offensive slump this season, ranking No. 26 in the league in points scored with 19.2 per game. Playing away from home has been an even bigger obstacle for Dallas dating back to last season, as the Cowboys are 6-0 to the team total under, averaging just 13.3 points per game over that stretch. Against the Philadelphia Eagles on prime time in Week 10, their number should be around the 18.5-19 range for bettors who want to jump on the bandwagon.Consider Blake Bortles and the Jaguars in IndianapolisNot only do the Jacksonville Jaguars fall into the road-team-off-a-bye angle, but this is a matchup that Blake Bortles has thrived in. The Jags signal-caller has posted an average quarterback rating of 105.3 with 10 touchdowns and zero interceptions in the team's last six games against the Indianapolis Colts, while the team is 6-0 against the spread in that span. Jacksonville is currently a three-point underdog, and if history repeats itself, a sprinkle bet on the moneyline might not be the worst option in the entire world.Alex Kolodziej is theScore's betting writer. Report: Le'Veon Bell may sit out entire season
Running back Le'Veon Bell is reportedly contemplating not returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers before the franchise tag deadline of Nov. 13, according to The Athletic's Mark Kaboly.According to Kaboly, Bell's camp is considering skipping the entire 2018 season as "newly learned information from the collective bargaining agreement" reveals he can be considered a third-year franchise player in 2019 (instead of a second) even if he doesn't report this year.Under the third-year franchise tag, Bell's one-year guaranteed contract would be in the range of $25 million - a number that would almost certainly prevent the Steelers from applying the tag to the running back for a third straight year.
Eagles' Kelce: I've 'never really appreciated' what Cowboys stand for
Jason Kelce has added more fuel to the Philadelphia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys rivalry ahead of their Week 10 matchup. The Eagles center discussed his dislike of the Cowboys organization and its "fair-weather" fans during a Wednesday morning appearance on Philadelphia radio station 94WIP."I would say mostly I just don't think a lot of players, in particular, me, just don't really like the franchise, the organization, what it stands for - what it's always stood for," Kelce said. "This goes back to the lockout when they were getting replacement players, how outspoken the Dallas Cowboys franchise was in ending that. I've just never really appreciated what the organization and what its fans really stood for. A lot of fair-weather people from across the country that just kind of fell in love because they're winners instead of having any type of emotional connection to the team whatsoever."There's a ton of players they got that I got a lot of respect for, Sean Lee, Travis Frederick, unfortunately, is going through some serious health concerns, but he's a tremendous player. I've got some respect for some of their guys, it's most of the organization that you don't like."The Eagles will host the Cowboys on Sunday in the first of two meetings this season.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jaguars' Fournette returns to practice ahead of potential Week 10 return
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette returned to practice Wednesday ahead of a potential Week 10 return against the Indianapolis Colts.Fournette has been sidelined by a hamstring injury for all but two games this season. He most recently played against the New York Jets in Week 4, racking up 11 carries for 30 yards and one reception for 5 yards before another hamstring injury forced him to leave the game.T.J. Yeldon is the Jaguars' leading rusher this season. He's gained 334 yards on 81 carries but has scored just one touchdown with one lost fumble. He's added 346 yards and four touchdowns on 37 receptions. The Jaguars added veteran Carlos Hyde in a trade with the Cleveland Browns ahead of Week 7, but he's played just one game with Jacksonville, rushing for 11 yards on six carries. The Jaguars, 3-5, rank 24th in the NFL with 95 rushing yards per game after leading the league in that category last season.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bruce Irvin signs with hometown Falcons over Patriots, Steelers
The Atlanta Falcons announced Wednesday they signed former Oakland Raiders pass-rusher Bruce Irvin to a one-year deal.Irvin told ESPN's Vaughn McClure that he chose to sign in his hometown of Atlanta despite the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers both offering more money. The Seattle Seahawks also pursued Irvin, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Falcons plan to have Irvin in their lineup against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Report: Chiefs' Watkins had MRI on foot, injury could affect Week 10 status
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins underwent an MRI after dealing with pain in his foot following Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. While the injury's not considered to be serious, it could affect his status for Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals.Watkins was bothered by the injury in the Chiefs' 37-21 victory, but he was able to finish the game after leaving for a short time in the fourth quarter to get taped. He recorded five receptions for 62 yards in the contest. The five-year veteran has been impacted by various foot injuries throughout his career but has played every game this season after signing a three-year, $48-million contract with the Chiefs in March. New York Giants rookie sensation Saquon Barkley referred to Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley as the NFL's Most Valuable Player on Tuesday."I definitely can learn a lot from a guy who blocked from, at the end of today, the MVP of the league," Barkley told reporters when asked about the Giants signing ex-Ram lineman Jamon Brown, according to Matt Lombardo of NJ.com.Brown, who spent two-plus seasons with Gurley on the Rams, joined the Giants on Oct. 31 during their bye week. Barkley offered plenty of praise for Brown's former teammate, who is a prime MVP candidate along with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees."I watch film of Todd Gurley, and I love the way he plays," Barkley said. "He's an all-purpose back. He's a threat every time he touches the ball. He runs physical. Titans' Vrabel isn't pleased with Byard's Cowboys star celebration
Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard channeled his inner Terrell Owens on Monday, posing on the Dallas Cowboys' star after intercepting a pass from Dak Prescott. While Byard's teammates joined him at midfield, seemingly enjoying the celebration, head coach Mike Vrabel wasn't happy with his star defender's actions."That's not what we want as an organization," Vrabel told reporters Tuesday, according to Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams. "That's not what I want as a head coach. ... I get that there are things that cross the line between whistles. Once the whistle blows, celebrate with a teammate. Find somebody else in a Titans uniform. Find a coach. Celebrate with them. But we don't need to do that. That's not what we want to do."I talked to Kevin this morning. I'll talk to the team again tomorrow. That goes for a lot of guys. That's not what I want. If that's what they want, then we see it very differently."Though Byard wasn't penalized for the celebration, the NFL will review it for a possible fine, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Aikman: Cowboys need complete organizational overhaul
While Jerry Jones appears content with his team despite its 3-5 record, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman has a different perspective. In his weekly show on 1310 The Ticket, Aikman said he believes the Cowboys need to make big changes if their struggles this season continue."Go through the list and this team, over a long period of time, has been what it's been," Aikman said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. "It hasn't always mattered who the head coach has been. So to me, if you're asking me, I'd say there has to be a complete overhaul of the entire organization."Related: Prescott takes blame for MNF loss, Jones says QB will be extendedThe FOX color analyst did not specify what changes he would make, but he appeared to hint that Dallas' issues begin at the top."I've heard Jerry say, 'OK, look, we're going to do it differently. I'm going to do it differently.' ... But it's the same. Nothing changes," Aikman said. "And that to me is the bigger issue. ... Yes, coaching is important, personnel, all those things are important, but how are you going about evaluating how you're going about running the organization?"Aikman added, "I talk to people who have been inside the building and have a pretty good understanding (of) how things are run, and in a lot of ways, there's a lot of dysfunction. And that has to change if this team is going to be able to compete on a consistent basis like the teams that you look to around the league that seemingly are in the hunt each and every year."After Monday's 28-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Jones said he doesn't anticipate any major changes in the near future. The Cowboys have a tough matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10 on Sunday Night Football.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Defensive Line All-Stars: A look back at Week 9's standouts
After a Week 9 filled with sacks, stops, and stuffs, let's review the standout defensive linemen around the league:Defensive Lineman of the Week: Danielle Hunter, VikingsAfter a couple of years on the precipice of stardom, defensive end Danielle Hunter's broken through this season with 10.5 sacks through nine games. He's now an elite pass-rusher and produced his best performance to date against the Detroit Lions in Week 9, accumulating nine tackles, four quarterback hits, and 3.5 sacks.Hunter was always a physical and athletic pass-rusher who leaned on his violent power and explosiveness to produce at a high level. Now, the LSU product has developed into a technician on the edge, setting up his pass-rush moves with varied and effective footwork. His first sack against Detroit is a great example:Here, Hunter's aligned well outside the Lions' right tackle. After the ball is snapped, he explodes upfield, immediately stressing the tackle's pass set. And once he's within range, Hunter squares up his opponent while making it seem like he's going to use a two-hand swipe to win around the edge. But instead, Hunter sticks his foot in the ground and darts inside of the tackle with a well-timed club/arm-over move that clears contact on his way to quarterback Matthew Stafford.Hunter's third sack of the day was just as impressive. In the clip below, he leverages active hands and precise footwork to bring down Stafford yet again:On this play, Hunter's aligned just outside the Lions' right tackle. Once the ball is snapped, he takes his initial steps as if he's expecting a double-team from the tackle and tight end. But when the latter leaves the formation to run a route, Hunter immediately squares up the tackle and executes a masterful swipe to win the edge. From there, Hunter does well to execute a powerful rip move that clears contact as he bends around the corner and flattens to Stafford for the sack. Notice how Hunter uses the momentum from the rip move to drop his pad level so he can turn around the edge at a more acute angle.Hunter's firmly cemented himself as one of the very best pass-rushers in the NFL, fulfilling the potential he's flashed since being drafted in 2015.Pass Rush of the Week: Trey Flowers, PatriotsDespite being overshadowed by Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, and Bill Belichick, Trey Flowers has quietly been one of the Patriots' best players this season. The sacks haven’t been there, but Flowers has generated consistent pressure while being a monster versus the run.And against the Green Bay Packers in Week 9, in a one-score game, Flowers came up clutch with a third-down sack that forced a key punt:While he typically lines up at defensive end, Flowers is aligned as a defensive tackle here with an outside shade over the left guard. Once the ball is snapped, he explodes upfield and establishes initial contact with the guard by using a strong stab from his inside hand. That allows Flowers to manage the distance between them, so he can effectively place his outside hand on the guard's outside wrist and utilize a forklift move to clear contact.Once that happens, Flowers does an excellent job of throwing on the breaks, dropping his pad level, and taking a tight turn toward Aaron Rodgers for the sack. When the Patriots' defense needs a big play, Flowers is often the guy who steps up. Pay the man, New England. Before it's too late.Run Defender of the Week: Eddie Goldman, BearsAkiem Hicks has been a regular in this series, but he's not the only talented player in the middle of the Chicago Bears' defensive line.Former second-round pick Eddie Goldman isn't as effective as Hicks on a snap-to-snap basis, but he's an impactful interior defender in his own right. His abilities were on full display throughout Sunday's game against the Bills, as Goldman finished with five tackles and four stops. Here's an example against the run:Here, Goldman's aligned in the A-gap between the center and the left guard. Once the ball is snapped, he fires out low and anchors his outside foot to the ground while turning his inside hip, reducing his blockable surface area and holding his position against Buffalo's initial double-team. From there, Goldman sees the running back, sheds his block, and makes the tackle. Not only does Goldman show off his immense play strength to strain and hold his ground at the point of attack, but he also demonstrates a mastery of the fundamentals needed to beat the double-team while maintaining the eye discipline to identify the running back's path.Even on a defense with Hicks and Khalil Mack, don’t forget about Goldman when the Bears' front seven is mauling offensive lines. In the Spotlight: Mario Addison, PanthersTo the surprise of many, Carolina Panthers defensive end Mario Addison is ranked ninth in the NFL with 7.5 sacks following his dominant three-sack performance against Tampa Bay on Sunday.Addison was only a competent pass-rusher earlier in his career, but the 31-year-old is now thriving. He's improved his sack total for three straight years (six in 2015, 9.5 in 2016, 11 in 2017) and looks primed to do so once again this season. He isn’t super athletic or powerful, but Addison's a technically sound and precise defensive end who can take advantage of mistakes by offensive tackles. Here's an example:Here, Addison's aligned wide of the left tackle. Once the ball is snapped, he comes out of his stance with a stutter step before expanding to the edge of the tackle, where he uses a short forklift move to clear contact and gain a free path to the quarterback. The key is the initial stutter step, which freezes the left tackle and allows Addison to get outside of him. If a pass-rusher doesn’t have the speed to blow by a blocker or the strength to power through one, he must master the ability to manipulate the space between them, which Addison showcases on this sack.Carolina's established itself as a legitimate Super Bowl contender in the NFC, and even though he doesn’t receive a ton of credit, Addison's played a key role through Week 9.John Owning is a football writer at theScore. Demaryius Thomas 'emotional' over Broncos' handling of trade
Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas is unhappy with how the Denver Broncos treated him prior to last Tuesday's trade that sent him to the Houston Texans."It just hurts me, man, I'm emotional," Thomas said in a radio appearance on Monday, according to Mike Klis of 9News.com. "I’m empty still."He was critical of the Broncos' play-calling in Houston's Week 9 victory, and has since turned his critiques toward general manager John Elway."It was so tough,’" Thomas said. "Even leading up to the Kansas City game (October 28) it was tough, because that one day, I didn't say anything to anybody. I walk into the job and Vance Joseph walks up to me and says, 'Don't listen to the trade talks, it's not true.'"Before the season started, the trade talk was still going, and nobody said anything to me. Why come to me Monday when it's the same talk? When he said that to me, I said, 'How is it not true? My agent (Todd France) called me today and said Elway wanted a fifth-round pick for me.'"Thomas, who spent eight-and-a-half seasons with the Broncos after being chosen with the No. 22 pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, ended up being dealt in exchange for a fourth-round pick and a swap of seventh-rounders.Thomas recorded five consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns from 2012 through 2016. He scored double-digit touchdowns in the first three of those seasons but failed to top five scores in each of the past three years. He felt criticisms toward him in his final days in Denver were unfair."I heard they were saying that Vance was saying something, and Elway was saying something. I did so much for this organization and never had nothing bad to say about anybody - none of the players I played with. I just did my job and kept it as professional as I could," Thomas said. "For you all to say that I was one of the reasons that the offense wasn't going, and say this and that, man, that hurt."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Prescott takes blame for MNF loss, Jones says QB will be extended
Quarterback Dak Prescott is taking the blame for the Cowboys' 28-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans in Dallas on Monday night."We’ve got to do better and it starts with me," Prescott said, according to David Helman of Cowboys.com. "It starts with me first all the way."Prescott completed 21 of 31 passing attempts for 243 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception while being sacked five times. He added two rushing attempts for 11 yards. The third-year signal-caller hasn't thrown for 300 yards in a game this season and has thrown multiple touchdowns on just three occasions. Prescott ranks 29th among 34 qualified quarterbacks in passing yards per game, and 24th in passer rating. The Cowboys are 3-5 through nine weeks and hold the third spot in the NFC East behind the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles. Still, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is standing by the 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year."Tonight's game did not - did not, I emphasize - impact my future look at Dak Prescott. Not tonight," Jones said after the loss.Related: Jerry Jones doesn't expect any coaching changes despite 3-5 recordHe doubled down on Tuesday."Listen, Dak is the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Ravens won't practice during bye: 'We're better off resting'
For the Baltimore Ravens, a bye week couldn't have come at a better time. With the Ravens mired in a three-game losing streak amid rumors that John Harbaugh is on the hot seat, Baltimore's head coach believes it's best for his players not to practice during their week off."I know that we're better off resting at this point," Harbaugh said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. "I think our guys have been hard at work, at it through a long training camp, and it will be good for us to get an opportunity to get off our feet and get our legs back. So I'm looking forward to that."Harbaugh doesn't anticipate making changes to either player personnel or the coaching staff this week, but instead hopes the bye will help rejuvenate his squad. The Ravens were certainly banged up prior to Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, placing 10 players on the final injury report and ruling out both of their starting offensive tackles early in the week."We've got to get healed up ... Get some guys back on offense. And obviously, defensively, we've got a lot of guys who are hurting," safety Eric Weddle said. "We've got seven games left. There's still an opportunity, and nobody knows what's going to happen, right?"The Ravens return to action Nov. 18 when they host Cincinnati.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Elway: Broncos will 'stay the course,' keep Vance Joseph
Denver Broncos general manager John Elway has seen enough in his team's first nine games to give him hope for the remainder of the 2018 season.Elway said he doesn't see the firing of head coach Vance Joseph as a necessity in the near future."At this point, we’re going to stay the course,” Elway said during a local radio appearance, according to Ryan O'Halloran of the Denver Post. "I’m much more encouraged this year than last year because guys are still playing hard and (we) are in the games."The Broncos are 3-6 and third in the AFC West heading into their Week 10 bye. Three of their six losses have been by four points or less."The frustrating part for everybody … we haven’t made the plays we need to get over the hump," Elway said. "Every game in this league is always competitive and the teams that win are teams that are able to do it consistently. We have not been able to do it."I like the heartbeat of this team, the fact they’re competitors and they continue to work hard."The Broncos have gone 8-17 since Joseph was hired as a first-time head coach in January 2017.The team has now found some stability at the quarterback position after signing Case Keenum this past offseason. They had three different QBs start at least two games last year; Denver finished the 2017 campaign ranked 27th in the NFL with 18.1 points per game.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Hue Jackson would take job as assistant 'in a heartbeat'
The Cleveland Browns fired head coach Hue Jackson last week after he led the team to a 3-36-1 record since the start of the 2016 season. The 53-year-old, who's owned many different positions on NFL sidelines since 2001 after starting out in the college ranks as a graduate assistant in 1987, said he's open to taking another job for the remainder of the 2018 season as an assistant."If there's somebody who I know and trust and respect, felt like they needed me to help or to do something for them along the lines of assisting in any way that I can to help them be as good as they can be on game day, I would do that in a heartbeat," Jackson said on The Adam Schefter Podcast.Jackson owns the second-worst winning percentage in NFL history among head coaches with at least 40 games, split between his time in Cleveland and with the Oakland Raiders in 2011.He's still confident in his abilities as an offensive coordinator, a role he last held with the Cincinnati Bengals for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, and he could seek out a similar position next year."Oh absolutely, I would," Jackson said. "And I'm not going to run from the opportunity to sit in the head chair again either. I know I can do it. There's no question in my mind that I can. I know my record doesn't say that and rightfully so. I get it. But I know that I can go coordinate offenses in the National Football League tomorrow if given an opportunity."With h/t to Cleveland.comCopyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Packers had plane ready Sunday in case JK Scott's wife went into labor
The Green Bay Packers put a contingency plan in place to ensure rookie punter JK Scott wouldn't miss the birth of his first child.Scott's wife, Sydney, started experiencing contractions ahead of Sunday night's game against the New England Patriots, so the Packers had a plane waiting at a nearby airport in case he had to fly back home, according to Wes Hodkiewicz of Packers.com. General manager Brian Gutekunst also used the team's open roster spot to sign punter Drew Kaser as a backup for the game.Scott never got the call, though."The baby could come at any time," he said afterward. "We're inducing this week, if anything else, but I was talking to them. It was awesome. Brian Gutekunst, he pulled me aside and was talking to me, and really caring about me with this baby and my wife. It was cool they would do that for me. Jerry Jones doesn't expect any coaching changes despite 3-5 record
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he doesn't anticipate any changes to the coaching staff following Monday's 28-14 loss to the Tennessee Titans, according to Jane Slater of NFL Network.Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan are likely the two men on the hot seat following Dallas' disappointing start to the season."I think that after eight games, when you've won three, that's cause for concern," Jones said, according to NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman. "Our record could be better than it is right now and we'd still be in trouble, we have to play better."Each player, front office person, coach -- and me -- is going to have to do better."The Cowboys entered Week 9 tied for 25th in points per game (20). Report: Saints to work out Dez Bryant
One of the NFL's top offenses is looking for a shock midseason upgrade. The New Orleans Saints will bring in Dez Bryant for a workout Tuesday, sources told Jane Slater of NFL Network.Colleague Ian Rapoport added that the Saints will also host Brandon Marshall and Kamar Aiken.Bryant has been on the open market since his release from the Dallas Cowboys in April. He turned down a multi-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens a few weeks after being cut and has received minimal interest since. If Bryant does sign with New Orleans, he arguably couldn't land in a better spot.Saints head coach Sean Payton is one of the more creative play-callers in the league and the presence of Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara would mean less of a workload for Bryant. After Thomas, the Saints have Tre'Quan Smith, Cameron Meredith, and Austin Carr at receiver.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Sharrif Floyd to file a $180M lawsuit against surgeon Dr. James Andrews
Former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd will file a $180-million lawsuit against renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews and the Andrews Institute for Orthopedic Surgery, his lawyer Brad Sohn told Albert Breer of the MMQB.com.According to the lawsuit, Floyd suffered permanent nerve and muscle damage in his right leg after Andrews opted for a more significant surgery than the one he initially told the defensive tackle, which was supposed to sideline him for around a month. The former first-round pick's career is now over. The suit alleges that the Andrew Institute negligently administered a pain blocker that led to the career-ending damage to his leg."We believe that if Sharrif had not been the victim of the medical negligence we allege, he would've been paid commensurate with some of the top players at his position, if not some of the top defensive players in football," Sohn saidThe $180-million figure is based on the career earnings of other top players at Floyd's position.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Seahawks also had success on the ground in their first meeting with the Rams back in Week 5, amassing 184 rushing yards, including 68 and a touchdown from Davis. His work as a pass-catcher prevents him from being game-script dependent. Arians would consider coaching Browns but recommends Pagano
Retired head coach Bruce Arians is open to returning to the NFL sidelines, although he has a specific opportunity in mind."Cleveland is the only job I would consider," the CBS analyst told Steve Doerschuk of CantonRep.com during a break from coverage of Sunday's game between the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs. The Browns are the only team that's fired a head coach this season. Darnold: I played 'stupid football' in loss to Dolphins
New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold has struggled badly during his team's three-game losing streak, and it appears he's his own toughest critic. After throwing four interceptions and no touchdowns during the latest defeat - a 13-6 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 9 on Sunday - Darnold took full responsibility."It's just not playing to the best of my ability and quite frankly just playing stupid. Former Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals running back Chris Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, via his agency."CJ2K" spent 10 eventful seasons in the league. In 2009, he became just the sixth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a single campaign. In the same season, he broke the NFL's yards from scrimmage record with 2,509 yards."I would like to take this time to thank my family, friends, fans, and teammates who have given their continued support throughout my 10-year career," Johnson said in a statement. "Playing in the NFL was an honor and I am humbled and blessed to have been a part of the league for 10 years."Johnson was a highly touted prospect in the 2008 NFL Draft out of East Carolina. He famously broke the 40-yard dash record during the NFL combine, running it in 4.24 seconds. The blazing ball-carrier carried that momentum to draft night, where he was selected in the first round (No. 24 overall) by the Titans. Week 9 By Design: Breaking down the best plays from Sunday
Here's a look at the well-designed plays that made our list in Week 9:Passing Design of the Week: Brees, Thomas ice victoryThe shootout in the Bayou lived up to the hype, as the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams combined for 80 points in a thrilling contest that came down to the fourth quarter.Despite facing a 35-17 halftime deficit, the Rams stormed back with 18 unanswered points to tie the score in the fourth quarter. But the Saints reclaimed the lead with a field goal and forced a punt on the ensuing Rams possession. Then, with a chance to put the game away, New Orleans did this:The beauty of this play is how Sean Payton and the Saints use alignment and personnel to stress the defense and get the matchup they want. Quarterback Drew Brees is in the shotgun with an empty backfield and three receivers to the left. The inside receiver is Alvin Kamara (No. 41), who'd already accounted for three touchdowns on the afternoon. The dangerous Kamara draws two-man bracket coverage, which leaves No. 1 receiver Michael Thomas in a one-on-one matchup with Marcus Peters. Thomas runs a vertical route and gets the separation he needs by beating the jam from Peters at the line of scrimmage. That's partly because the Saints' pre-snap movement has Peters trying to direct traffic as the play begins:Once he makes the catch, Thomas glides into the end zone to seal the victory. And while his celebration - a tribute to Joe Horn using an old-school flip phone - got most of the attention afterward, the play design and execution was a major factor in the Saints handing the Rams their first loss of the season.Running Design of the Week: Dalvin cooks Detroit's run DFor a zone running play to be successful, the offense needs a number of elements to come together. The running back must quickly identify the best lane and use explosiveness and footwork to split through the available crease. The offensive line must work in unison, moving their feet and finding the right blocks while certain players move up to handle linebackers at the second level. Those elements came together on this 70-yard scamper by Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook:Here, the Vikings run a zone-read play to the left, as every offensive lineman - including tight end Kyle Rudolph - flows in that direction. Cook takes the handoff and makes his "bang" read - attacking straight through the middle of Detroit's defense - while picking up some critical blocks along the way.The first is from center Pat Elflein (No. 65), who handles the defensive tackle on his left shoulder, creating one seal. The other seal comes from right tackle Brian O'Neill (No. 75), a rookie who executes a perfect reach block on a defender who's aligned outside of his left shoulder. Meanwhile, quarterback Kirk Cousins puts the football in Cook’s belly while reading the backside defensive end, whom the Vikings leave alone as Rudolph (No. 82) immediately climbs to the second level:The two big blocks at the second level come from Rudolph and right guard Mike Remmers (No. 74). As you can see above, they do a great job of taking on defenders, ensuring that Cook's untouched when he hits the secondary. The 70-yard burst gave the Vikings a first-and-goal. They hit pay dirt two plays later on a touchdown pass from Cousins to Adam Thielen, and ultimately walked away with a 24-9 victory.Pressure Design of the Week: Vikings maul Lions in red zoneA few weeks ago, the Baltimore Ravens set a franchise record with 11 sacks and were recognized with our Pressure Design of the Week. On Sunday against the Lions, the Vikings set their own franchise record with 10 sacks - as six defenders were credited with at least half a sack - so it's only fair that they receive the same honor. The tone was set on two straight red-zone plays in second quarter with the Lions trailing 7-3. On a second-and-10, Vikings middle linebacker Eric Wilson shows pressure in the A-gap, but he drops back at the snap and the defense rushes just four. Still, defensive ends Danielle Hunter and Everson Griffen beat their respective blockers and meet at quarterback Matthew Stafford to split the sack:Next, facing third-and-long, the Lions look to throw a quick screen pass to the left. But watch how fast Griffen (No. 97) and Sheldon Richardson (No. 93) penetrate into the backfield on that side:Their quick pressure forces Stafford to pull the ball down, and he's sacked by Hunter (No. 99) for a 1-yard loss, forcing the Lions to kick a field goal. When a defense can get pressure with just four pass-rushers, it can mix up coverages in the secondary and make life difficult for the opposing passer. The Vikings' front four did just that throughout Sunday's game, and the results were all over the stat sheet - and on the scoreboard.Coverage Design of the Week: King's pick-6 paces ChargersThe Los Angeles Chargers pulled out a 25-17 road victory in Seattle, thanks in no small part to defensive back Desmond King's game-changing pick-6.With the Seattle Seahawks trailing 19-10 midway through the fourth quarter and facing a first-and-10 on their own 36-yard line, Russell Wilson lines up in the shotgun with two receivers to his left. The Chargers counter with a 4-2-5 nickel defense, with King in the slot to the left side of the offense:NFL/CBSThe Seahawks are running the "Hoss" concept, which combines a hitch route from the outside receiver and a seam route from the slot receiver. The Chargers are in a Cover 3, which means King's responsibility is the curl/flat zone underneath (red circle). He must eventually work to the outside, but also needs to respect a potential curl route from the receiver across from him. Wilson knows this and looks to throw the hitch on the outside, as he assumes King can't break quick enough to get there. But King reads the play perfectly. He passes off the seam route to the safety behind him and quickly gets underneath the hitch route near the sideline:The angle below gives a better view of the second-year defensive back coming off the seam and immediately working to the flat, getting into perfect position for the interception under the hitch:The pick-6 gave the Chargers a 25-10 lead, and they held on for a pivotal victory in hostile territory.Mark Schofield writes NFL feature content for theScore. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Tom Brady threw for 294 yards and a touchdown, and James White ran for two scores to lead the New England Patriots to a 31-17 victory over Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. It was the sixth straight victory for the Patriots (7-2).Rodgers completed 24 of 43 passes and two touchdowns in his second career matchup with Brady. It was 17-all late in the third quarter when Aaron Jones fumbled for Green Bay (3-4-1).New England receiver Julian Edelman hit White on a 37-yard catch-and-run to set up White's second score, a 1-yard run. On the Patriots' next possession, Brady connected with Josh Gordon for a 55-yard TD.Gordon caught five passes for 130 yards, the 12th 100-yard receiving game of his career. With tight end Rob Gronkowski out with a back and ankle injury and leading rusher Sony Michel out for the second straight week with a knee issue, Brady and the Patriots had to get creative. They again turned to receiver Cordarrelle Patterson to help carry the load in the backfield.Patterson was effective for the second straight week, rushing 11 times for 61 yards and touchdown. He worked in tandem with White to keep the Packers defense guessing. White took advantage and found space to turn short completions into first downs.New England also capitalized on a pair of long flea-flicker passes to set up scores.Rodgers was on target in the first half. He was elusive in the pocket and extended plays with his feet, keeping the Patriots' secondary off balance long enough to create space downfield or some big gains. The longest was a 51-yard pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the third quarter that helped set up Rodgers' 15-yard TD pass to Jimmy Graham that tied the game at 17. But the pocket got smaller in the second half as the Patriots' defense sped him up, hitting him six times and sacking him once.Brady completed 16 of his first 22 passes but had seven straight incompletions in the third quarter - the most of his career. There wasn't a turnover in the game until Green Bay's Jones was stripped by Lawrence Guy early in the fourth quarter. The fumble was recovered by Stephon Gilmore on the Patriots' 24.New England quickly capitalized, using four straight completions by Brady and a 37-yard pass from Julian Edelman to get to the Packers' 2. White scored from a yard out two plays later to put the Patriots back in front 24-17.The Patriots' defense tightened on Green Bay's next drive. It culminated on third down when Adrian Clayborn and Trey Flowers dropped Rodgers for a 9-yard sack and forced a punt.It proved costly. On just the third play of the ensuing drive, Brady found Gordon over the middle. Packers cornerback Tramon Williams had a shot at a tackle, but whiffed, springing Gordon for a 55-yard touchdown to push the lead to 31-17.EJECTIONPackers safety Jermaine Whitehead was ejected in the second quarter.Whitehead was trading shoves with Patriots center David Andrews when the second-year defensive back from Auburn spun around and slapped Andrews in the face.He was called for unnecessary roughness and tossed. Wide receiver Demaryius Thomas had himself a fine debut with the Houston Texans, catching all three of his targets for 61 yards in a 19-17 win over his former team, the Denver Broncos.Thomas was dealt before last Tuesday's trade deadline in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick and a swap of seventh-rounders.After the reunion game, he was critical of Denver's play-calling leading up to the missed 51-yard field goal by kicker Brandon McManus."That's what they do over there," Thomas said, according to NFL.com's Michael Silver. "I ain't a part of that no more. We like to win over here."Quarterback Case Keenum got the Broncos near field-goal range with an 18-yard completion to wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders on a fourth-and-8 play with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter. Keenum then connected with tight end Jeff Heuerman for five yards to the Texans' 32-yard line. The next play was a loss of one on a handoff to running back Phillip Lindsay, which set up the long field-goal try.The loss dropped the Broncos to 3-6, while the Texans improved to 6-3 with a sixth consecutive victory, strengthening their hold on the AFC South lead.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc.
