People are mistaking 49ers LB for shirtless Tongan flag bearer
The opening ceremony of PyeongChang 2018 went down on Friday, and for the second Olympics in a row, Pita Taufatofua stole the show with his shirtless appearance. The Tongan flag bearer burst onto the international scene for his oiled-up, shirtless appearance at the opening ceremony of Rio 2016, and repeated the performance despite the frigid temperatures in South Korea. While it was Taufatofua stealing the show, some people confused the cross-country skier for Pita Taumoepenu of the San Francisco 49ers. The linebacker, who was born in the United State but grew up in Tonga, was getting tagged in tweets about the flag bearer during the ceremony.
5 players who could get the franchise tag in 2018
The NFL offseason is underway, and the franchise-tag window is the first key period in what's sure to be an exciting 2018.Beginning Feb. 20, teams can assign a franchise or transition tag to one of their impending free agents. With plenty of big names in the conversation, here are five players who might be tagged:Le'Veon Bell, RB - Pittsburgh SteelersBell played under the franchise tag this past season, so his one-year guaranteed salary would see a 20 percent increase from 2017 if he's tagged again, making his cap number $14.54 million. The Steelers running back is one of the NFL's most dynamic offensive players, rushing for 1,291 yards in 2017 while catching 85 passes. But while the team and Bell are involved in contract talks, an agreement has yet to be reached. It's unlikely Pittsburgh will let him hit the open market, so using the tag on him for a second straight season is entirely possible - even with the salary increase. This would give the team more time to work out an extension.DeMarcus Lawrence, DE - Dallas CowboysLawrence was dominant for the Cowboys in 2017, registering a career-high 15 sacks and four forced fumbles. His breakout season after three inconsistent years makes the former second-round pick a perfect candidate for the franchise tag.Dallas may be afraid to sign its edge rusher to a multi-year deal with substantial guaranteed money, so they could place the tag on him now and discuss an extension later in the year. The move may work in the 25-year-old's favor, too. If Lawrence maintains or increases his production, he could earn a more lucrative deal in 2019.Jarvis Landry, WR - Miami DolphinsMiami's top receiver has caught more passes in his first four seasons than any player in league history (400) and is set to strike it rich this offseason. Only 25 years old, Landry led the NFL with 112 catches in 2017, but the Dolphins are reportedly struggling to meet his contract demands. The Phins could let Landry walk in free agency, but would be left with inconsistent wideouts Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker atop their depth chart. If extension talks don't pick up, there's a chance Miami will guarantee the 25-year-old roughly $16 million for the 2018 campaign by tagging him.Lamarcus Joyner, S - Los Angeles RamsA second-round pick in the 2014 draft, Joyner broke out for the Rams in 2017, intercepting three passes and defending nine in 12 games. He's a key member of an improving defense, and the team would be wise to retain his services.Applying the franchise tag to Joyner would cost about $11.5 million in cap space, in comparison to the $16 million it would cost to tag fellow candidate Sammy Watkins. Los Angeles could opt for the cheaper option.Ezekiel Ansah, DE - Detroit LionsTurning 29 in May, Ansah is the oldest member of this list, but he's still a likely candidate for the tag. Edge rushers are a premium position in the NFL, and the Lions defender is coming off a 12-sack campaign.Detroit is slated to have plenty of cap space, making the $17-million-plus deal well within reason. It may also be a cheaper, less risky option than a long-term extension. At least one pass-rusher has been slapped with the franchise tag in every offseason since 2010.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images & USA Today)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Time wins: Brady's Facebook documentary on 'pause' following SB loss
Tom Brady's sixth Super Bowl title wasn't only meant to secure his legacy among the greatest athletes of all time, it was how the makers of his Facebook documentary, "Tom vs. Time," envisioned the end of their online series. But, as we all know, the Philadelphia Eagles threw a wrench in the works and beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII in dramatic fashion, not only handing Brady his third loss in the Big Game but forcing the documentary's director, Gotham Chopra, to "pause" the project while they form a different angle to the sixth episode.Chopra posted a statement Friday to Facebook explaining the delay and his new plans on how to conclude the documentary.
Boston Herald suspends reporter's column over Brady holdout hoax
The Boston Herald announced Friday it has suspended the sports column of Ron Borges after the reporter claimed Tom Brady was preparing to sit out OTAs over contract demands, a story that ultimately proved to be a hoax."Kirk & Callahan" radio show listener "Nick in Boston" reportedly texted with Borges while pretending to be the New England Patriots quarterback's agent, Don Yee. Borges stated his report was based off multiples sources."A column by Ron Borges in today's Herald regarding Patriot Tom Brady's salary discussions was based on information which proved to be false," the paper said in a statement, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "The Herald apologizes to Brady, his agent Don Yee and the Patriots, and to our readers for this erroneous report. Borges' column has been suspended pending further review."The story appeared on the front and back cover of the latest Herald print edition and remained on the newspaper's website until around 7:30 a.m Friday.Borges was previously suspended for plagiarism by his prior employer, the Boston Globe, according to Smith.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. DeFilippo 'to leave no stone unturned' in Vikings' QB debate
John DeFilippo enters an interesting situation as the new offensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings, who could, conceivably, lose three starting-caliber quarterbacks to free agency.DeFilippo and the Vikings hold exclusive negotiating rights with Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, and Teddy Bridgewater until March 12, when other teams can start talks. The market officially opens March 14. The coach says he’ll be involved in however Minnesota wants to address the game’s most important position."I'm going to have some say and I'm going to have as much say as they want me to. ... I'm going to leave no stone unturned," DeFilippo said, according to Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. The Vikings officially announced DeFilippo’s hiring Friday morning, mere weeks after he helped defeat them in the NFC Championship Game as quarterbacks coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. It has also been suggested DeFilippo could try to persuade the Vikings to trade for Nick Foles, whom he just led to a Super Bowl MVP performance.DeFilippo, 39, didn't indicate which QB he's leaning toward, if any, but spoke to what he values most in a signal-caller."Character is No. 1 for me. If you have character at that position, you have a chance to succeed," he said.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Lions announce extension for GM Quinn, reportedly through 2022
The Detroit Lions announced a contract extension for vice president and general manager Bob Quinn on Friday, which "matches the term" signed by new head coach Matt Patricia. The deals run through 2022, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.Quinn has held the position with the team since 2016, and previously worked with the New England Patriots in various roles from 2000-2015."Thank you to (owner Martha Firestone) Ford, her family, and Rod Wood for their continued support and belief in my ability to lead this football team. My goals and vision remain unchanged and I will continue to work diligently at improving this team and every facet of the football operation. Coach Patricia and I will always work in close concert on any and all football-related matters. The Carolina Panthers held a second interview with Buffalo Bills assistant college scouting director Lake Dawson for their open general manager position, sources told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.Pelissero says the Panthers aren’t close to offering the position to anyone, but Dawson is viewed as a strong candidate. The 46-year-old Dawson, a former NFL receiver, worked as a scout for the Cleveland Browns and was the Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel prior to joining the Bills.Interim general manager Marty Hurney, once viewed as the front-runner for the role, is on paid leave from the team after his ex-wife said he harassed her. Not often associated with a sentimental side, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady took to Instagram on Friday to express gratitude following a Super Bowl LII loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Brady holdout? Boston Herald pulls columnist's erroneous report
The Boston Herald pulled a story written by columnist Ron Borges claiming New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is prepared to sit out offseason work unless he receives a contract extension with up-front money similar to what the San Francisco 49ers gave Jimmy Garoppolo on Thursday.Garoppolo's five-year deal is reportedly worth $137.5 million, with $90 million guaranteed in the first three years - the largest three-year cash total for a new contract in NFL history.Borges' story was removed from the website around 7:30 a.m. Friday; however, it appeared on the front and back cover of the latest Herald print edition, according to CBS Boston.
Vikings announce hiring of DeFilippo as OC
The Minnesota Vikings have taken the first step to reshaping their offense for 2018, as they announced the hiring of highly praised Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo as their offensive coordinator.DeFilippo replaces Pat Shurmur, who accepted the New York Giants' head coach position shortly after the Vikings' loss to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. The 39-year-old was largely credited this season for the performance of sophomore quarterback Carson Wentz, who was a strong MVP candidate prior to an injury suffered in Week 14. DeFilippo then helped turn Nick Foles from a failed starter/veteran backup into a Super Bowl MVP-winning quarterback. While all three Vikings quarterbacks - Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, and Teddy Bridgewater - are set to hit free agency March 14, DeFilippo inherits an impressive cast of wide receivers including Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen, and running back Dalvin Cook.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Sherman plans to play 5-6 more years with Seahawks or 'somewhere else'
Confident he'll return from his Achilles injury by training camp, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman is aiming to play much further into the future despite entering the final year of his contract."Honestly I'm not sure on their side of things," Sherman said, according to Brady Henderson of ESPN. "It doesn't change anything in my mind. If we have the talks, we do, if we don't, then it is what it is. I plan on playing five, six more years, whether it's here or somewhere else. Business is business."Sherman has been acting as his own agent since his previous representation, Ben Dogra of CAA, had his license temporarily revoked by the NFLPA in January, 2016.He doesn't feel as though he's missing out."It was just, I don't need an agent at this point," Sherman said. "My resume kind of is what it is - and if that's not enough, then I don't know what's going to be enough."Sherman isn't paying attention to rumors that the Seahawks could release him this offseason due to the injury, or to the fact he'll turn 30 years old at the end of March and is due a non-guaranteed $11 million base salary for the upcoming season. The Seahawks reportedly shopped Sherman last offseason but were unable to find a suitor willing to match a seemingly high asking price. They were rewarded, as Sherman finished his abbreviated season as Pro Football Focus' No. 33 cornerback.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Vikings to hire Eagles' DeFilippo as new OC
The Minnesota Vikings are set to hire in-demand Philadelphia Eagles quarterback coach John DeFilippo as their new offensive coordinator, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.DeFilippo will replace Pat Shurmur, who left to take the New York Giants' head coaching position. The 39-year-old's star has risen immensely after he helped transform Carson Wentz into an MVP candidate this season. He even interviewed for the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals head coaching vacancies before ultimately losing out to Matt Nagy and Steve Wilks, respectively.DeFilippo inherits an offense with talent all over the field, but not under center. Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, and Teddy Bridgewater are all out of contract this offseason, though it's expected at least one will be re-signed by Minnesota.Regardless, DeFilippo takes over a unit that finished 10th in scoring in 2017 and will have a healthy Dalvin Cook returning in 2018, so it's likely he'll be among the hottest head coaching names in a year's time if he can keep the offense rolling.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lovato: Eagles ran fake walk-through ahead of SB in case Pats were spying
The New England Patriots have a history of spying on their opponents, and their Super Bowl LII adversaries were apparently not willing to take any chances right before the big game.Philadelphia Eagles long snapper Rick Lovato said Thursday on 620 WDAE that he believes the walk-through his team did before the Super Bowl was fake, and intentionally didn't include plays like the now-famous "Philly Special" trick play due to concerns that the Patriots may be watching."We had run that play during a walk-through like two weeks ago," Lovato said, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk."I believe our whole walk-through was just a complete fake walk-through. We did it at the stadium. There were certain people walking around. ... I believe I overheard someone say a lot of the plays we were running weren't even in the playbook for the Super Bowl."No one has claimed any foul play before Super Bowl LII, but with New England's history, the Eagles clearly wanted to be safe rather than sorry.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Chiefs release Darrelle Revis
The Kansas City Chiefs have released veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis, the team announced.Signed to a two-year contract in November, Revis played in just five games for Kansas City, making 11 tackles and defending two passes. He also played in the team's playoff loss to Tennessee, unfortunately batting the now-famous Marcus Mariota pass that the quarterback himself caught and advanced into the end zone for a touchdown. The veteran was due an $8.8-million roster bonus in March, so this move does not come as a shock. The Chiefs will shed $21.5 million in cap space between his release and the Alex Smith trade, according to ESPN's Field Yates.Turning 33 this summer, Revis has enjoyed an illustrious NFL career. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler and has been selected as a first-team All-Pro four times. 49ers sign Garoppolo to 5-year deal worth reported $137.5M
The San Francisco 49ers made what could be the biggest move of the NFL offseason Thursday, signing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a five-year contract. The deal is worth $137.5 million, a source told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. That figure would make Garoppolo the highest-paid player in NFL history in terms of average annual value, according to Garafolo, surpassing Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Stafford, who signed a five-year, $135-million extension last August.Related - Film breakdown: Jimmy Garoppolo has all the makings of a starThe 26-year-old blossomed after being traded from the New England Patriots in 2017, leading the 49ers to victories in each of his five starts to finish the season. Coming off a Super Bowl LII loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in which he caught 9 of 15 targets for 116 yards and two touchdowns, Rob Gronkowski may be weighing a career change. The oft-injured Patriots tight end is reportedly considering retirement from football in order to pursue an acting career, a source told Bill Burt of the Eagle Tribune. He suffered a concussion in the AFC Championship Game, though returned in time for the Super Bowl, and apparently told friends that his injuries have taken a toll.Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Sylvester Stallone have told Gronkowski he could make millions as an action star, reports Burt, which is apparently another draw because of his contract. The four-time first-team All-Pro is due a base salary of $8 million in 2018 and $9 million in 2019 - the final years remaining on his six-year, $54-million extension. He'll be 30 when that contract is set to expire.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Former defensive end DeMarcus Ware made his intentions for the future very clear when he signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Dallas Cowboys in April, but that didn't stop a few teams from giving him a call.Ware, who appeared in 178 games over the course of his 11-year career with the Cowboys and Denver Broncos, was reportedly contacted by three teams looking to gauge his interest in coming out of retirement, according to Dallas Cowboys senior writer Rob Phillips. The 35-year-old listened to the calls but ultimately decided to stick with retirement, according to Phillips. The identity of the three teams were not mentioned.Ware will best be remembered for his tenure with the Cowboys from 2005-13, where he became the franchise leader in both sacks (117) and fumbles forced (32). Redskins' Thompson: We got 'mixed messages' about Cousins staying
While we wait for the blockbuster trade that sent quarterback Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Washington Redskins to become official March 14, incumbent Washington starter Kirk Cousins remains in limbo. That confusion isn't new for running back Chris Thompson, who says that over the past year, it wasn't entirely clear whether Cousins was hoping to stay in Washington or leave."I think everybody got some mixed messages, I will say that," Thompson told ESPN's Chris Cooley and Kevin Sheehan when asked. "... I know for me, talking to Kirk, being with Kirk, all we talked about was, you know, 'C.T., with you staying healthy, we can do this with you, we can do that with you,' and we were able to do a lot of the things that Kirk wanted to do with me. We wanted to continue this. So, for me, I expected him to be here."Though Cousins played the last two seasons under the NFL's franchise tag, Thompson said the quarterback's financial requests on a long-term contract made some players doubt his desire to win a championship."I knew it would be hard given that we want to win, but if you pay a guy ($30 million) a year, it’s going to sacrifice some other things ... as far as helping our defense out, maybe getting some more receivers, or running backs and all those type of things," said Thompson. However, Thompson spoke highly of Cousins, who's topped 4,000 passing yards in each of his three full seasons as the starter, totaling 81 passing touchdowns and 13 rushing scores."I know Kirk is going to go somewhere and get every single dollar he wants. I think he deserves it. He's put up some great numbers year in and year out, so that's what this league is all about," Thompson said.- With h/t to The Washington PostCopyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. "I've never seen anyone throw harder than me with the football, so until I see it in person, I believe I have the stronger arm."Mahomes said the furthest he's ever thrown a ball is 85 yards with some help from the wind, but estimated he could chuck it 80 yards without help from the weather.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Steelers want to extend Roethlisberger, sign Bell long term
The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to keep the "Killer B's" together for a while longer.Team president Art Rooney II told reporters Wednesday that the Steelers will try to extend quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's contract and sign star running back Le'Veon Bell to a new long-term deal this offseason, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.Instead of once again flirting with retirement following the 2017 season, Roethlisberger ensured he would be back for at least one more year. The 35-year-old has two years remaining on his deal, and Rooney said the Steelers aren't in a rush to get a new deal done.Bell played the 2017 season under the franchise tag. Rooney is leaving the door open to use the franchise tag on his star rusher again, though he said the Steelers have the "next several weeks" to reach an agreement with the first-team All-Pro running back. They have until March 6 to decide whether they need the franchise tag, which would cost approximately $14.5 million for 2018.There has been some doubt over whether the Steelers want to invest long term in Bell after the 25-year-old skipped training camp last summer in hopes of a new deal and then reportedly missed most of the team's walkthrough before losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the playoffs. Bell has also said he would consider sitting out the season or retiring if the Steelers placed the franchise tag on him again.Along with making it clear he wants to keep his trio of offensive stars together, Rooney squashed any notion the team is looking to get rid of Mike Tomlin, as he considers the head coach to have one of the best track records in the league.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Matt Patricia was introduced as the new head coach of the Detroit Lions on Wednesday, and has some decisions to make with his staff.Patricia previously served as the New England Patriots' defensive coordinator and brought over Paul Pasqualoni to serve in that role with the Lions. Meanwhile, Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter remains on the staff, but Patricia didn't explicitly say he will keep the same title."Jim Bob is on staff and he will be here. Obviously he's done a great job here in what he's been able to accomplish with Matt Stafford and the offense," Patricia said. "Looking forward to working together and continuing that success and building on the things that have been done on that side of the ball."Also joining the Lions staff is George Godsey as quarterbacks coach. Patricia and Godsey coached together with the Patriots from 2011-13 and Godsey has experience as an offensive coordinator.Patricia is just three days removed from an appearance in the Super Bowl, so he'll presumably need some time to evaluate his staff before putting all the pieces in place.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Yankees acquire Seahawks QB Russell Wilson from Rangers
The New York Yankees acquired a superstar of a different variety on Wednesday when they traded future considerations to the Texas Rangers for the rights to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, the Rangers announced, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN."This is a unique opportunity for us to learn from an extraordinary athlete who has reached the pinnacle of his profession," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said in a statement. "After talking to a number of our players, there is a genuine excitement in having Russell join us for a short time in camp. "Growing up taking grounders, hitting BP, and throwing deep post routes early in the mornings with my dad and brother is where my love of sports came from, and those memories stick with me every morning I wake up ..."While football is my passion and my livelihood, baseball remains a huge part of where I came from and who I am today. Fans start petition to stop Cris Collinsworth from calling Eagles games
Many Philadelphia Eagles fans weren't happy with Cris Collinsworth's Super Bowl LII commentary and are looking to ban the NBC analyst from calling future games.A petition launched on Change.org refers to Collinsworth as "the most biased and horrible commentator ever" and calls on NBC to "discipline him or at the very least keep him to only commentating on Patroit (sp) games who he so very much loves." As of Wednesday afternoon, it has over 88,000 signatures.Related: Eagles' Long watches Super Bowl reairing, pokes fun at commentaryDuring the Super Bowl, Collinsworth said he was "stunned" after it was ruled that Corey Clement's third-quarter touchdown catch would stand for Philadelphia, and also speculated that Zach Ertz's late game-winning touchdown would be overturned.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Colts GM addresses Luck rumors: 'He doesn't need surgery'
After the Indianapolis Colts lost their hand-picked head coach at the final hour, general manager Chris Ballard was brought to the podium to address the situation. While doing so, Ballard also took time to address quarterback Andrew Luck and his recovery from a shoulder issue that cost him the entire 2017 season.Rumors have surfaced that Josh McDaniels backed out of the head coaching job in part because of the uncertainty regarding Luck's availability going forward."Let's talk about Andrew. Because there's a lot of rumors. Everybody's an expert right now," Ballard began."I'm going to listen to Andrew Luck, I'm going to listen to the doctors, and I'm going to listen to the guy who's training him right now. At this point, we feel very strongly that Andrew's in a good place. He doesn't need surgery. His strength is good. He's working on his arm motion and he's working on his arm speed right now."Luck isn't yet at the point of throwing footballs, as the Colts have remained cautious with his recovery process."He's not going to skip a step," Ballard added.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Why Foles may not find a starting opportunity in 2018
As the roller-coaster car that is the career of Nick Foles sits at the very top of the NFL landscape, it could be set for a fall down to the same point where his 2017 campaign began.Related: Is there anyone with a more bizarre career than Nick Foles? The most unlikely of Super Bowl MVP winners, Foles is contractually obligated to remain with the Philadelphia Eagles for one more year. In so doing, he'll presumably be relegated to backup duty behind a healthy Carson Wentz - assuming the latter is recovered from knee surgery - making Foles the league's most accomplished Plan B.Uncertainty surrounding Wentz could make the Eagles inclined to keep Foles as an insurance policy. On the flip side, the team will have no long-term use for him on an expiring contract, and could seek to trade him for another position of need or draft picks. But even if the Eagles do look to trade Foles, they may find the market for the newly successful quarterback is less desirable than expected in a summer with both a strong free-agent and draft class. Here's why Foles could find starting opportunities lacking in 2018:Free agencyFor teams with the available resources and cap space, the best method to address a quarterback opening is via free agency. By doing so, those teams can hold onto their draft picks and current players, as opposed to trading them.Kirk Cousins is widely viewed as the top signal-caller expected to be available this spring. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings are in danger of losing all three quarterbacks who played for them this season in Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, and Teddy Bridgewater. All four quarterbacks have varying issues and weaknesses, but they all also have starting experience and can be viewed as safer, better options than Foles by at least some metrics.Josh McCown and Jay Cutler round out the most interesting names in the free-agent class. Drew Brees and Jimmy Garoppolo are unlikely to hit the open market, but would vault to the top of the list if they did.The draftThe 2018 NFL Draft is widely viewed as one of the richest classes in some time at the quarterback position - theScore's own mock draft has four signal-callers going in the top four picks. A handful of other options are expected to go later in the first round, and in the second or third. At this point, there's no telling which pivots will be Day 1 starters, or who'll wind up as 2018's Patrick Mahomes and spend their rookie season learning from an incumbent veteran.Foles, who turned 29 a couple weeks before Super Bowl LII, takes a knock here, as teams may opt for younger, higher-pedigree options over a third-round pick from the 2012 draft. What's left?As Foles and his family enjoy the traditional MVP trip to Walt Disney World, there's little he can control about his NFL future. There's nothing more he can do for himself this year, and barring a contract restructuring, he knows how much money he'll be making next season - one year before a potential opportunity to cash in big, though some of the current shine may fade by then. But, which teams will have potential quarterback openings in 2018?Of the 32 starters from last season, five have already been replaced, or will be upon the return of an injured starter:Team2017 Starter2018 StarterReasonColtsJacoby BrissettAndrew LuckReturn from injuryDolphinsJay CutlerRyan TannehillReturn from injuryPackersBrett HundleyAaron RodgersReturn from injuryTexansN/ADeshaun WatsonReturn from injury49ersC.J. Here are some options:Team2017 Starter2017 BackupBillsTyrod TaylorNathan PetermanBengalsAndy DaltonAJ McCarronJaguarsBlake BortlesChad Henne****pending free agentThe Bills showed they weren't committed to Taylor this season, while Peterman showed he wasn't ready for a starting role. The Bengals have held on to McCarron despite trade interest, indicating they view him as the alternative to Dalton should they move on from the veteran.Bortles, though oft-maligned, just led his team to within a touchdown of the Super Bowl, likely securing at least his immediate future as the starter.Should another dark-horse team be convinced of Foles' abilities, they may need to first swing another major deal in order to clear their starting job.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Stadium investigating broken, stolen seats from Super Bowl LII
Philadelphia Eagles fans who may have paid four-figure prices for their seat at Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota might think they're entitled to a little more than simply having witnessed the franchise's maiden championship victory firsthand. The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority is investigating reports and videos that have emerged of Eagles fans busting and even swiping the stadium's plastic purple chairs, according to Tim Harlow of the Star Tribune. One fan even made it through airport security with his unofficial souvenir of the big game before someone took note."I kept waiting for somebody to say that he was too intoxicated to get on the plane or that he had a stolen item," said Marcus Certa, who was present at the airport gate area when a fan arrived with a part of his seat strapped to his carry-on. "The TSA and the feds are more concerned how much pot you have, not that you have a seat stolen from a stadium."Tickets in a section of the stadium where seats were spotted being broken up were selling for more than $1,200.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ballard after McDaniels spurns Colts for Patriots: 'The rivalry is back on'
Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard delivered a fiery press conference the day after the franchise was spurned by head-coach-to-be Josh McDaniels.Ballard confirmed that he received a phone call on Tuesday night from McDaniels that he'd changed his mind and was "going in a different direction.""He said he had bad news for me. I said, 'Just give me a yes or no answer, are you in or are you out?' We went around for a minute and he said no. I said, 'OK and we're going to move forward,'" Ballard told the media.Ballard said he conducted two interviews with the New England Patriots offensive coordinator and felt very confident going forward. He had no indication McDaniels was getting cold feet. And though he's been on the job in Indianapolis for only one year, Ballard left no doubt that he and the organization will move forward and leave the McDaniels saga in the rear-view mirror."Let me make this clear, I want and we want a coach for this organization that wants to be here," he said. "I'll say this and I've said this since Day 1, it's never about one guy. It's about the team."Ballard confirmed that the new assistant coaches the Colts had already agreed with on the assumption McDaniels would be their head coach will remain with the team. There will also be no timetable for the renewed head coaching search. But he wanted to leave Colts faithful with one message: He will find the right leader for the team."Just because you're the first choice doesn't mean you're the right choice," Ballard said. "It's about getting the right guy."Ballard finished with a parting shot at Foxboro."The rivalry is back on."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Lions name Paul Pasqualoni defensive coordinator
The Detroit Lions made a number of coaching announcements Wednesday, with the most significant being the hiring of Paul Pasqualoni as defensive coordinator. The move comes after Matt Patricia was hired as head coach, so it's likely the two will work collaboratively given Patricia's extensive history as a defensive coordinator.Paqualoni spent the previous two seasons as defensive line coach at Boston College, and has previous NFL experience as defensive coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys (2010) and Miami Dolphins (2008-09).The 68-year-old also has over 20 years of head coaching experience at the college level, most notably with Syracuse from 1991-04, and parts of three seasons as head coach at Connecticut from 2011-13.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Schiano rejects reported Patriots offer to remain Ohio State DC
Ohio State defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Greg Schiano will be staying at the college level with the Buckeyes, he confirmed to Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated on Wednesday after reports linking him to the New England Patriots.Schiano had been rumored to replace Matt Patricia as Patriots defensive coordinator after Patricia took the Detroit Lions' head coaching job. A source told Feldman that Schiano did have an opportunity to join New England's staff, although it's not clear what role he was offered.Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer acknowledged outside interest in Schiano in a press conference Wednesday."Coach Schiano, just like last year, he turned down a handful of head coaching opportunities in college," Meyer said. "Multiple opportunities, again, in the National Football League this year. ... And he's not one of those (that) gets it out there ... that's zero conversation in the media. It's between myself and him, and then obviously, (athletic director) Gene Smith is very involved. ..."At least a dozen opportunities Coach Schiano's had. And we had many, many discussions and he's informed me that he's 100 percent staying at Ohio State University. So that's done and he's here."Following a two-year stint as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Schiano has spent the past two seasons with the Buckeyes.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. How Doug Pederson went from questionable hire to Super Bowl champion
When Doug Pederson was hired as the Philadelphia Eagles' head coach, he faced his fair share of critics. The final hire of the 2016 offseason, Pederson's qualifications were questioned throughout league circles. The Ringer's Michael Lombardi even called the former Chiefs offensive coordinator "the least qualified to coach a team than anyone I've ever seen in my 30-plus years in the NFL."Luckily for the Eagles, football games are won on the field and not the internet. Here's a look at how the seven coaches hired in 2016 fared with their teams:Coach Team Record (including playoffs)Chip KellySan Francisco2-14 (fired in 2017)Mike MularkeyTennessee21-22 (fired in 2018)Ben McAdooNew York Giants13-16 (fired in 2018)Hue JacksonCleveland1-31Dirk KoetterTampa Bay14-18Adam GaseMiami16-17Doug PedersonPhiladelphia23-12 (SB LII Champion)Despite his critics, Pederson captured Super Bowl LII in just his second season at the helm. But how did the little-known coach achieve this level of early-career success?Friends in high placesThe Eagles head coach deserves a ton of credit for his team's accomplishments, but management provided the pieces to work with.Executive vice-president of football operations Howie Roseman and VP of player personnel Joe Douglas made a number of key summer moves. Their hits include signing Alshon Jeffery, Brandon Brooks, and Patrick Robinson, and trading for Jay Ajayi.
3 HC candidates Colts should pursue in wake of McDaniels' snub
The Colts suddenly have no head coach after Josh McDaniels backed out of their agreement at the very last minute (or the first, considering Indianapolis had already announced his hiring), and are now staring down the barrel of disaster unless they move decisively.Indianapolis reportedly already has three candidates lined up for interviews, hinting that the front office had reason to believe McDaniels would return to the New England Patriots. Those candidates remain unknown, so here are three options who Indy would be smart to pursue:Frank Reich, Eagles OCIf you can't get the offensive coordinator of the losing Super Bowl team, you might as well go after the OC from the team that beat them.Doug Pederson calls the plays for the Eagles, but Reich is still an integral part of the offensive game-planning and was lauded for his role in Philadelphia's dominant Super Bowl LII performance and for developing Carson Wentz.Reich is a former longtime NFL backup quarterback, and the Colts have seen how successful Pederson - a fellow ex-clipboard holder - has been at turning a franchise around quickly. Reich could also attempt to bring over Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo - a rising star who was linked to head coaching openings - as his OC, a prospect that will likely have Colts fans salivating with Andrew Luck set to return. While the connections with the current Indy regime aren't significant, Reich did begin his coaching career as an intern for the Colts in 2006.Dave Toub, Chiefs ST coachToub was rumored to be the front-runner for the Colts all season long when it was clear that Chuck Pagano's days in Indy were numbered. The hashtag "DisrobeForToub" even made the rounds on social media, as fans clamored for the highly regarded Kansas City Chiefs special teams coach.Colts general manager Chris Ballard spent 2013-16 in the Chiefs' front office, and Toub joined the team the same year. After being forced to keep Pagano for an extra season, it was assumed Ballard would be given license to pick his guy - and his history with Toub, along with the coordinator's sterling reputation around the league, made connecting the dots easy. It's unclear if Toub was spoken to regarding the position when the Colts were doing their first round of interviews, but even if he wasn't, he is likely the man Ballard would be most comfortable handing the reins over to after being blindsided by McDaniels.Jim Harbaugh, Michigan HCThis one is a pipe dream. But after being so spectacularly embarrassed by McDaniels, why not chase after Harbaugh knowing they can't make things worse with other vacancies already filled? The Colts need to move quickly, but fans would likely be willing to wait if Harbaugh was a possibility.Harbaugh recruited Luck to Stanford and coached him for three seasons, so the connections are obvious. Jim Irsay is all about making splash hires, too, and after McDaniels, he'll presumably want to show he can still land a big fish - there are few bigger than Harbaugh.Harbaugh's tenure with Michigan hasn't been the success story many predicted it would be, and while it's highly unlikely he can be convinced to jump ship from his alma mater before truly making his mark, he could be looking for a way back into the NFL.In his four seasons as 49ers head coach, Harbaugh took San Francisco to three straight NFC Championship Games, won 44 regular-season contests, and made one Super Bowl. His personality might be abrasive, but McDaniels was always a wild-card too. Harbaugh's record of success in the NFL is far more impressive.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Twitter baffled by McDaniels' decision to back out of Colts job
Josh McDaniels' change of heart, backing out of Indianapolis' head coaching job, has sparked a social media frenzy.A number of current and former Colts players took to Twitter to express their shock:
McDaniels spurning Colts locks him in as Belichick's successor
Bill Belichick patrolling the New England Patriots' sidelines, his famous hoodie up and even more famous scowl in place, has been a staple image of the NFL for nearly two decades. However, after Josh McDaniels' stunning decision to spurn the Indianapolis Colts and return to New England as the offensive coordinator Tuesday, it's clear that Belichick's time on those sidelines is coming to an end - maybe not today, but soon. Why else would McDaniels, maybe the NFL's hottest head coaching candidate, burn all of his bridges outside of New England in one dramatic swoop? Make no mistake about it, McDaniels is now toxic to all those outside of Foxboro. No general manager or team executive will want to stake their careers on a man who so spectacularly bamboozled the Colts after the club had already announced the hiring of McDaniels, organized a press conference for Wednesday, and had several assistant coaches working away in the building.McDaniels is now a New England man likely for the rest of his career - and if he was willing to walk away from a blank slate, $80 million in cap space, a strong general manager in Chris Ballard, and a presumably healthy Andrew Luck, it would have only been for one thing: a guarantee that he'd be the man to lead the Patriots into the post-Belichick era.McDaniels has been viewed as Belichick's likely successor ever since he returned from his first ill-fated head coaching stint with the Denver Broncos and helped repair his reputation by taking the offense and Tom Brady to new heights. But his rise from the ashes was too quick; Belichick appeared far from done at the start of the 2017 season and it was expected McDaniels would leave the following offseason after testing the waters with interviews around the league. Ultimately, he opted to stay.Patriots owner Robert Kraft reportedly convinced McDaniels to stay by improving his contract, but that doesn't pass the sniff test. McDaniels knows he was already on thin ice after imploding in Denver and has now declared to all the NFL that he cannot be trusted. So, it would only make sense that McDaniels has been stamped as the next Patriots head coach and that the change will come in the next season or two.The signs are already there. The reported dysfunction and tension in the Patriots' building between Belichick, Kraft, and Tom Brady had led some to declare the end of the dynasty (and that was all before the Patriots lost Super Bowl LII to the Philadelphia Eagles). The trade of Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers - one of the root causes of the tensions - robbed Belichick of his succession plan after Brady had signaled that he may be closer to retirement than most assumed. In the end, the Patriots are the most secretive franchise in the league. They won't tip their hand and allow word of Belichick's exit strategy to dominate his potential last few seasons. But it appears Belichick and Brady will be going out around the same time, and McDaniels will lead the franchise into a new era.Colts versus Patriots in 2020. Report: DC Eberflus signed contract with Colts before McDaniels had change of heart
More fallout from the Josh McDaniels debacle involves Indianapolis Colts assistant coaches recruited by the Patriots' offensive coordinator.According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, former Cowboys linebackers coach Matt Eberflus has already signed a contract to become the Colts' defensive coordinator and will stay with his new club despite McDaniels deciding to return to the Patriots. The same goes for defensive line coach Mike Phair, who was previously with Illinois in the same role. This creates an awkward scenario for the Colts and their coaches, as NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that McDaniels himself recruited Eberflus, and the former Dallas assistant was already inside team facilities breaking down film. Now, whoever Indianapolis hires as its next head coach will be stuck with assistants he had no hand in hiring - a rarity in the NFL. This could affect the team's hiring process.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
