John Fox believes brighter days are ahead for the Chicago Bears, who failed to win more than six games in any of his three years as head coach."I do think it's closer than people think. We inherited a mess ... but I felt we were on the brink at the end," Fox, who was fired at the end of the season, told John Mullin of NBC Sports. "I think that (Halas Hall) building is definitely different; they feel it. I do think that it was a positive."The Bears notched just five victories in 2017, and have been spinning their wheels for a while. They went 5-11 under Marc Trestman in 2014, the year before Fox was brought in to steer Chicago through a rebuild, and haven't posted a winning season since 2012.There may be excitement, but the Bears still have a long way to go if they're to get back into contention in the NFC. Their tallest offseason task will be increasing the talent level around quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, the second overall pick in last year's draft, who struggled to develop a rapport with the crop of receivers he was handed.Chicago will select eighth in the 2018 NFL Draft.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. D.J. Swearinger was irate when the Washington Redskins let go of Kendall Fuller in the Alex Smith trade, but the standout safety has since come to grips with the move."I'm extremely over it," Swearinger said Monday on NFL Network. "I understand the business is the business. I was a little heated, I didn't want to see one of my guys that I was in the meeting room with, shedding blood, sweat, and tears - did a lot of things, a lot of great plays for us, but for the future, we got what we needed, and the organization handled it the way they needed to handle it. And my hat's off to the organization. I didn't handle that the correct way and we're moving forward now."In the initial aftermath of the deal - which can't be made official until the beginning of the new league year - Swearinger questioned why the Redskins would part with "the best slot corner in the game."At the time, he opined Washington weakened itself with the trade. Two weeks later, Swearinger said he's begun to see the light at the end of the tunnel."I think we can be better," Swearinger said of the Redskins, who went 7-9 in 2017. "I don't know what Alex (from) a leadership standpoint brings, but I hear he is a great player. I see he is a great player. He's done a lot of great things in this league. A Pro Bowl guy and I can't wait to get with him and get some championships going."In addition to Fuller, Washington surrendered a third-round pick to acquire Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs. Smith's arrival also likely signaled the end of quarterback Kirk Cousins' time with the Redskins, as he'll hit free agency, poised to land one of the richest contracts in NFL history.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jon Gruden isn't happy with some of the rules the NFL has implemented in his absence.Returning from a nine-year coaching absence, the Oakland Raiders head coach skewered the rule changes - which came in under the new CBA in 2011 - that significantly restrict coaches' ability to have contact with their players in the offseason."You're not allowed to be with your players," Gruden told Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group. "Some genius thought that would be great, that we're not even allowed to talk to our players. So that's been a big challenge."You're not allowed to do anything. You're not allowed to coach your players. I've called several players, introduced myself. I think that's legal. I'm not having contact with everybody. … We're not allowed to have any real contact. It's pretty clear on what the rules are."After spending so much time away from the sidelines, watching from the broadcast booth, it's unsurprising that the energetic Gruden is raring to go.Unfortunately for the $100-million man, he has a lot to catch up on before he can try to live up to his contract.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Get to know the top prospects for the 2018 NFL Draft ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine, which takes place from March 2-5 in Indianapolis.Offense | Defense (Feb. 21)Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn StateAge: 21 Height: 5-11 Weight: 223 lbs2017 stats: 1,271 rushing yards, 18 TDs, 632 receiving yards, 3 TDsScouts salivated over Barkley for the past two seasons while the Penn State star developed into one of the best running back prospects in recent memory. As the position enjoys a revival at the top of the draft, with players like Ezekiel Elliott and Leonard Fournette going in the top five, Barkley could challenge for the No. 1 overall spot. An athlete with a rare blend of size and strength, Barkley possesses unreal fluidity and burst and has attracted Le'Veon Bell comparisons thanks to his patience and vision. The 21-year-old is also lauded for his work ethic and character. He's as close to a can't-miss prospect as it gets.Josh Rosen, QB, UCLAAge: 21 Height: 6-4 Weight: 220 lbs2017 stats: 3,756 passing yards, 26 TDs, 10 INTs, 62.6 completion percentageRosen isn't the most physically talented quarterback in this draft, but certain areas of his game are polished enough to elevate him into the top-five conversation. While the UCLA pivot's arm talent doesn't jump out on film, he's strong in the pocket, has top-tier mechanics, and excels under pressure. His downfield passing and decision-making need significant work, but he excels in two rare areas for a college quarterback: throwing with anticipation and touch. These skills (or the lack thereof) are often the root of a young quarterback's early-career struggles. Rosen does have questions to answer about his passion for football and his leadership qualities, but he could be the guy for a franchise seeking a Matt Ryan-type player who has a high floor and a solid ceiling.Sam Darnold, QB, USCAge: 20 Height: 6-4 Weight: 225 lbs2017 stats: 4,143 passing yards, 26 TDs, 13 INTs, 63.1 completion percentageBefore the 2017 season, Darnold seemed destined to secure the No. 1 overall spot - and he still could, again proving that teams are willing to look past flaws in passers at the top of the draft if their ceilings are high enough. The USC standout looked elite at times last year, but his alarming turnover rate clouds his entire evaluation. He had 13 interceptions and 11 fumbles in 2017, rightfully raising questions about how he'll handle the speed of the NFL. What isn't in doubt is Darnold's potential. He has prototypical size, is advanced in reading defenses, and plays with a confidence and aggression that can't be taught. Darnold's rawness means he may need to sit early in his career, so his destination could be key to the player he becomes.Calvin Ridley, WR, AlabamaAge: 23 Height: 6-1 Weight: 190 lbs2017 stats: 63 catches, 967 yards, 5 TDsRidley is widely considered the top wide receiver in this year's draft, but the former Alabama star isn't the kind of slam-dunk pass-catching prospect we've seen in years past. He's advanced in terms of route-running, and it's hard to fault his speed and ability to separate. What's holding the 23-year-old back is his lack of an elite frame and strength, and his struggles with drops (this has continued to be a problem for fellow Alabama alum Amari Cooper, which may give teams greater pause with Ridley). A more athletic prospect could challenge Ridley for the top receiver spot, so it'll be important for him to impress at the combine.Baker Mayfield, QB, OklahomaAge: 22 Height: 6-1 Weight: 218 lbs2017 stats: 4,627 passing yards, 43 TDs, 6 INTs, 63.1 completion percentage, 311 rushing yards, 5 TDsStrap in, NFL: Baker's coming to town. Mayfield stole the spotlight in his final year of college, destroying the field on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy and making headlines with his brash antics. Some teams may be put off by his fiery personality, but others will love the way he inspires and leads his teammates. Mayfield lacks prototypical size, but his arm strength is more than good enough for the NFL and he's arguably the most well-rounded passer in the draft. He can attack defenses at every level of the field, always forcing them to account for his ability to extend plays. Mayfield's first priority is to clean up his field vision, footwork, and small-window throws, but he's a natural passer who will just need time to develop the subtleties of the position - and convince teams he's not too much of a wild card in the locker room.Lamar Jackson, QB, LouisvilleAge: 21 Height: 6-3 Weight: 200 lbs2017 stats: 3,660 passing yards, 27 TDs, 10 INTs, 59.1 completion percentage, 1,601 rushing yards, 18 TDsMaybe the biggest question mark in the draft, some see Jackson as this year's best quarterback prospect, while others are pushing for him to move to receiver thanks to his otherworldly speed and athleticism. As usual, the answer likely lies somewhere in the middle. No one is dismissing Jackson's elite athletic ability or how well his skills could fit the modern NFL, where college concepts are becoming commonplace. However, his deficiencies as a passer need to be addressed to maximize his skill set. Jackson won the Heisman for a reason: He's a dynamic dual threat with a very good arm and decent pocket presence. However, he needs to improve his game-to-game consistency, turnover rate, and accuracy on the run. While Jackson's slight frame is a concern, switching him to a more physically punishing position isn't exactly a logical solution.Josh Allen, QB, WyomingAge: 21 Height: 6-5 Weight: 233 lbs2017 stats: 1,812 passing yards, 16 TDs, 6 INTs, 56.3 completion percentage, 204 rushing yards, 5 TDsIf you like your quarterbacks to be all-or-nothing gunslingers, Allen may be your man. The former Wyoming signal-caller has an arm unlike any other in this draft, along with the perfect frame and size for his position. Unfortunately, Allen's physical talents are overshadowed by his below-average production and, more importantly, his poor accuracy. Allen routinely struggles with timing and anticipation and is far too careless with the ball, often exhibiting an excess of confidence in his ability to rifle any throw into any size of window. Though some attribute his struggles to his weak supporting cast, Allen also played against subpar talent in the Mountain West Conference, so judging him in a vacuum presents a significant challenge. It's a puzzle teams need to solve, however, in order to determine whether Allen is the next Carson Wentz or the next Blake Bortles.Derrius Guice, RB, LSUAge: 20 Height: 5-11 Weight: 212 lbs2017 stats: 1,251 rushing yards, 11 TDs, 124 receiving yards, 2 TDsBarkley stands alone among running back prospects, but that's not to say Guice isn't an excellent player in his own right. The well-built LSU star is a physical runner who consistently understands how best to attack defenses and follow his blocks. Guice struggled with injuries in 2017, but showed his potential by dominating in relief of Fournette the year before. The 20-year-old might not have elite breakaway speed or agility, and he needs to improve in the less sexy aspects of the position (pass protection, third-down catching), but his violent style and power are rare.Connor Williams, OT, TexasAge: 20 Height: 6-6 Weight: 320 lbsOnce considered a potential top-five pick, Williams' stock dipped during his subpar 2017 campaign - he started just five games as he battled a serious knee injury. His 2016 tape was superb, though, and NFL teams could still see his great size and outstanding skills as a pass protector and take a risk on his health. Williams does lack length and will need to prove he can regain his top form in order to fight off the competition and become the first offensive tackle taken in the draft.Quenton Nelson, G, Notre DameAge: Not available Height: 6-5 Weight: 329 lbsThe sole challenger to Barkley's standing as the can't-miss prospect in this draft, Nelson is being lauded as the best interior offensive lineman to enter the league in quite some time. He's even been called a better prospect than Zack Martin, the Dallas Cowboys' three-time first-team All-Pro guard. Positional value limits how high Nelson can go, but it would be a shock if his name isn't called in the first 10 picks. The former Notre Dame standout has ideal size and mind-boggling strength. He can improve as a pass protector, but his minor deficiencies in this area are noticeable mainly because he's a near-flawless run blocker.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Philadelphia Eagles will one day have to make an important decision on what to do with backup quarterback and Super Bowl LII hero Nick Foles, and one former executive has given his take on what the team should do.Former NFL general manager Bill Polian weighed in on the Eagles' quarterback conundrum Monday, suggesting the team shouldn't listen to any trade offers that don't involve two first-round picks and two second-rounders, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.It's difficult to imagine the Eagles choosing to continue with Foles over incumbent starter Carson Wentz, so a trade seems to be the only thing in play aside from retaining Foles in a backup role.An asking price of four high draft picks, two of which in the first round, seems more like Polian making a point than anything else, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the Eagles command a significant return for a man who's proven he can lead a team through the utmost adversity.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth - who's spent the last 17 years in prison for plotting the murder of Cherica Adams, who was pregnant with his child - recently broke his silence in an open letter to the victim's mother.Carruth wrote a 15-page letter to Saundra Adams, the mother of Cherica, that was sent to WBTV Charlotte. He also spoke at length with the station on the phone, and accepted responsibility for the 1999 incident."I feel responsible for everything that happened and I just want her to know that truly I am sorry for everything," Carruth told WBTV. "If I could change anything, I'd change the whole situation. His mother would still be here and I wouldn’t be where I'm at."The former Panthers first-round pick is scheduled to be released on Oct. 22. He was sentenced to 18-to-24 years in 2001 after being found guilty of hiring Van Brett Watkins and Michael Kennedy to murder Adams.Adams died a month after the shooting, and her son, Chancellor Lee Adams, was born prematurely as a result. Chancellor was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Saundra Adams raised the child, who is now 18.Carruth also expressed his intention to attain custody of his son upon his release."I should be raising my son." Carruth said. "I let him down as he came into this world and the only way that I can make that right and the only way I can work out my relationship with my son is to be there for him."It may not be that easy. Saundra Adams told The Charlotte Observer on Monday that she would "never" relinquish custody of Chancellor."I've forgiven Rae already, but to have any type of relationship with him, there does have to be some repentance," Adams said. "And I think this opens the door. But I can say definitively he's not ever going to have custody of Chancellor."Chancellor will be raised either by me or, after I'm gone, by someone else who loves him and who knows him. He will never be raised by a stranger - someone he doesn’t know and who tried to kill him."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Dallas Cowboys plan to use the franchise tag on defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, who's coming off a 14.5-sack season, the Dallas Morning News' David Moore reports.Teams can begin assigning the franchise tag Tuesday, but the Cowboys reportedly intend to wait until closer to the March 6 deadline as they work on a long-term deal.At his best, Lawrence has been a dominant pass-rusher in Dallas, but he's yet to sustain that level from one year to the next. He posted zero sacks as a rookie, eight as a sophomore, one as a third-year player, and, finally, 14.5 in his most recent season. The franchise tag for defensive ends is expected to cost about $17.5 million, so it'll be an expensive short-term investment if the Cowboys can't ink Lawrence to a new deal before he signs the franchise tender.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Teddy Bridgewater attempted just two passes in 2017 - and one of them was intercepted - yet he savored his fourth official NFL campaign like no other."It was probably my favorite season by far, even though I didn't play much," the Minnesota Vikings quarterback told Courtney Cronin of ESPN. "This season challenged my mindset because as bad as I wanted to be out there playing, being the competitor that I am, I wanted to go to war and go to battle with my guys, I had to be out there in a different aspect. I had to be there for the guys mentally."Bridgewater, a former first-round pick, saw plenty of action during his first two years with the Vikings before a devastating knee injury wiped out his entire third season. By the time he was cleared to return in 2017, Case Keenum had seized Minnesota's starting quarterback job, ultimately leading the Vikings to an NFC Championship Game appearance."It gave me a different role and I accepted it," Bridgewater said. "It was one that was hard to accept because I'm a competitor, but I wouldn't trade this year for nothing."Bridgewater added that the backup role made him a better player."It helped me from a mental standpoint where I was studying," he explained. "As the number two, you have to always stay ready, stay locked in. That was different for me because I had never been in that position. But it helped me because I saw the game from a different view. The game has slowed down so much because I could see it from the sidelines."Bridgewater said earlier in the offseason that he expects to be a starter again in 2018. Malcolm Butler's absence in Super Bowl LII was a mystery to many, but not to New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty and his teammates."We all knew he wasn't starting all week," McCourty told Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com. "That wasn't a secret to the guys on the team."After playing nearly 98 percent of snaps during the regular season and starting New England's first two playoff games at cornerback, Butler was stunningly benched in the Super Bowl. He got on the field just once against the Philadelphia Eagles on a special teams play early in the game. It's still unknown why he lost his spot, and the Patriots' defense struggled without him en route to a 41-33 loss. Speculation surfaced afterward that Butler was involved in an off-field incident in the days leading up to the Super Bowl, though McCourty dispelled such theories.Related: Butler denies reports he was benched for team rule violation"As far as I know, all of that is the furthest thing from the truth ..." he said."I get why people are fishing. The guy played 98 percent of the plays. ... It's just not true. Baker Mayfield may be a Heisman trophy winner, but the former Oklahoma standout still has work to do if he's to prove himself as one of the best quarterback in this year's draft class. While Mayfield is expected to be a first-round pick, he still trails Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold in most mock drafts and also has the likes of Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson nipping at his heels. The NFL Scouting Combine - which is set to take place March 2-5 - will be one of Mayfield's last chances to separate himself from the pack, and the young signal-caller intends to do everything at the event."There's a reason I'm going there and I'm going to throw. Peyton Manning could be at the center of a bidding war between ESPN and FOX this offseason, as the two networks are reportedly looking to hire a marquee name as a game analyst for their respective prime-time football properties. Both networks have Manning at the top of their lists, sources told Andrew Marchand of the New York Post.ESPN needs a replacement for Jon Gruden on Monday Night Football after he left the booth to become head coach of the Oakland Raiders, and FOX recently picked up the rights to Thursday Night Football in a multibillion-dollar deal.Manning has reportedly been approached multiple times by different networks in regard to a TV analyst role, but he's been reluctant thus far.One source told Marchand that ESPN is willing to "back up the truck" for Manning's services. Gruden was reportedly ESPN's highest-paid personality at more than $6.5 million per year. It's unclear whether the network would retain Sean McDonough as the play-by-play announcer partnered with Manning.ESPN reportedly views Matt Hasselbeck, Randy Moss, Charles Woodson, and Kurt Warner as fallback options. The Oakland Raiders might be able to attribute Amari Cooper's down season to injuries, as quarterback Derek Carr suggested Friday the receiver was playing through immense pain all year."He would never say it to you - no one would ever say it to you - but I'll say it to you to have his back," Carr told Mad Dog Sports Radio. "That man was out there playing as hard as he could and giving everything he could and, honestly, a lot of guys probably wouldn't have played with what he had."Carr wouldn't specify precisely what Cooper dealt with, but said the wideout was playing on "one foot." Cooper was known to suffer from knee and ankle ailments throughout the campaign. He also missed time with a concussion. After posting back-to-back seasons of 1,000 receiving yards or more, Cooper managed just 680 over 14 games in 2017. Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell is set to hit unrestricted free agency on March 14, and while the Steelers could retain him for 2018 under the franchise tag, they appear to reciprocate his desire for a long-term contract. When asked Thursday if he was optimistic about a long-term deal getting done, general manager Kevin Colbert replied "I believe I am," according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler"We never will discount the use of the (franchise) tag because that's collectively bargained," Colbert said. Quarterback AJ McCarron has won his grievance against the Cincinnati Bengals and will become a free agent, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.McCarron was arguing he should be an unrestricted free agent, while the Bengals believed he should be a restricted one. An NFL arbitrator ruled in the quarterback's favor on Thursday. The grievance dated back to the former fifth-round pick's rookie year in 2014 when Cincinnati placed him on the non-football injury list for the entire season, claiming he suffered an injury while away from the organization. The Bengals must now pay McCarron his lost salary plus interest.McCarron remains thankful for his time with the Bengals, despite what might appear as an ugly end to his tenure."It was never a personal issue at all," McCarron said, according to Jim Owczarski of USA Today. "I absolutely loved my time in Cincinnati. I got to start some really key games and had some awesome wins and just a part of so many awesome moments. It was really just a blessing to be drafted there. It really was."The ruling carries significant league-wide ramifications, as well. McCarron will enter the free-agent market and could garner interest from multiple teams."We're going to be open to everything," McCarron said of his impending free agency. The signal-caller has attempted just 133 career passes in three seasons, accumulating six touchdowns and two interceptions behind longtime starter Andy Dalton.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL free agency is always dominated by the headliners, the type of players who will command contracts with a whole lot of zeroes. But, often, it's unheralded and overlooked free agents who make the biggest impacts.Few teams pursued Patrick Robinson last offseason, but the Philadelphia Eagles slot cornerback ended up playing an integral role in team's run to a Super Bowl title, appearing in 19 games and stealing the show in the NFC Championship Game by returning an interception 50 yards for a spectacular touchdown. He was on a one-year deal worth just $775,000.Here are four 2018 free agents who could follow in Robinson's footsteps:Alfred Morris, RBMorris started five games while Dallas Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott was suspended, and while his play was impressive, NFL teams are likely to view him as a journeyman back who isn't worth any kind of a substantial contract. But, the 29-year-old was more than just a product of the Cowboys' elite run-blocking. No team should bring Morris in expecting him to be a featured back again, but he could excel as the early-down bruiser as part of a strong backfield rotation after averaging 4.8 yards per carry (tied for his career best) in 2017.Even the upper-tier running back free agents struggle to get paid, so Morris is likely staring down a small one- or two-year contract. However, he has more than enough left in the tank to greatly outperform his perceived financial worth.Jerry Attaochu, LBA former second-round pick by the Chargers, Attaochu is set to hit the open market after two seasons in which he was either rarely used by the team following the arrival of Joey Bosa or struggling with injury. However, Attaochu is just 25 years old and racked up six sacks in 2015 in 15 appearances. The free-agent market for pass-rushers is usually weak due to the unwillingness of teams around the league to let athletic young edge players walk before hitting their potential, so you have to take a shot on high-upside guys to stumble on a gem.Attaochu has great burst and above-average athleticism. He'll likely need to take a one-year, "prove it" deal this offseason to boost his value, meaning a team could steal a solid pass-rusher for its rotation at a rock-bottom price.Albert Wilson, WRWilson put together a quietly productive season as part of the high-flying but inconsistent Kansas City Chiefs offense, catching 42 passes for 554 yards and three touchdowns. The wideout might not completely fall under the "bargain-bin free agent" umbrella, as he's still just 26 years old and has displayed enough talent to receive a modest contract, but it will likely end up being a steal if he can hit his ceiling. The likes of Jarvis Landry and Allen Robinson are expected to command double-digit yearly salaries on the opening market. Some teams are going to balk at their asking prices and go looking for cheaper options, and Wilson should be at the top of their list thanks to his speed and agility.Johnathan Joseph, CBJoseph could be this year's Robinson. The Texans veteran cornerback's best days are behind him, but he was still solid in 2017 for a Houston defense that lost both of its best pass-rushers.It's unlikely the 33-year-old Joseph is signed early in free agency, as teams look at younger, higher-ceiling players. However, if he's brought in as an injury replacement for a player hurt in training camp, he could be a strong pickup thanks to his veteran leadership and experience - especially as any deal he gets would be small.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc.
