Tarik Cohen was a dynamic weapon out of the backfield for the Chicago Bears as a rookie, and he's looking to take it up a notch - if not several notches - in Year 2."When I was at the combine, coaches would always ask me who I would compare myself to in the league, and I would always tell them Tyreek Hill," Cohen told a local radio station earlier in the week, according to Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com. "I feel that I can do the same kinds of things he does in the Kansas City (Chiefs) offense."Cohen, a fourth-round pick out of North Carolina A&T a year ago, had 370 rushing yards and 353 receiving yards in his debut season while splitting time with Jordan Howard at running back, dazzling defenders frequently. The hiring of former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as Bears head coach could lead to a larger role for Cohen going forward. If his wishes are granted, it'll lead to him becoming Chicago's version of Hill."And now since we have their coach now (in Nagy), I feel like I have to live up to that," he said. "And I definitely look forward to being the same kind of playmaker."Hill, who entered the league a year earlier than Cohen, enjoyed an explosive 2017 campaign, going over 1,000 yards and becoming one of the most feared playmakers in the league, in large part because of his blazing speed.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Stick to your evaluations. That's the mantra of general manager, coaches, and scouts around the league prior to the scouting combine. But it's easier said than done - when a player blows away away their tests and interviews at the event, it can send their draft stock into orbit. With that in mind, here are five of the players who could benefit most from wowing NFL decision-makers in Indianapolis:Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma Mayfield may have some on-field questions to answer at the combine, but the cocksure former Oklahoma quarterback can lift his stock the most by easing concerns about his character - especially after unflattering comparisons have made the rounds. While he isn't Johnny Manziel, the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner consistently acted in ways that were unbecoming to a franchise quarterback this past season, including planting an OU flag at midfield after a win at Ohio State and making a lewd gesture toward the Kansas sideline after opposing players refused to shake his hand. And that followed an offseason arrest for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. If teams are going to pick Mayfield high in the first round, they need to believe they can trust him - and that starts with the all-important combine interviews.Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise StateMaybe the best-named player in this year's draft, Vander Esch is a lock to be one of the athletic freaks who always steals the show at the combine. The former Boise State standout is generally viewed as one of the best second-tier linebackers in the class - behind blue-chip prospects Roquan Smith and Tremaine Edmunds - and should comfortably expect his name to be called before the end of the second round. However, the 6-foot-4 tackling machine has the potential to blow away the combine tests and turn enough heads to push his name into the first-round conversation.Donte Jackson, CB, LSUIn terms of dominating the 40-yard dash, LSU's Jackson is the man to watch this year. The former track star has more than enough in the tank to challenge Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver John Ross' combine record of 4.22 seconds, set last year. And, as we all know, speed is usually impossible for NFL teams to ignore.Ross' combine resulted in him flying up the draft board and being taken eighth overall. The wideout disappointed with an anonymous rookie season, but his issues won't stop the undersized Jackson from potentially cracking the top 32 picks if he becomes the new king of the 40.Shaquem Griffin, CB, UCFUCF standout Shaquem Griffin was born with a condition that required his left hand to be amputated at just 4 years old, but he overcame that to be named a second-team All-American linebacker in 2017.For unclear reasons, Griffin wasn't initially invited to the combine, but the NFL came to its senses in early February.Shaquem, whose brother Shaquill was drafted in the third round last year (90th overall) and plays for the Seattle Seahawks, will be looking to highlight his outstanding athleticism and prove that his physical disadvantage is no disadvantage at all. A dominant performance in front of scouts could boost his stock from a mid-rounder to earlier than his brother's slot.Arden Key, DE, LSUOne of the more polarizing prospects on and off the field, Key can use the combine to at least somewhat answer the questions surrounding him.The LSU pass-rusher had a great 2016 season and entered 2017 with a ton of hype. Unfortunately, injuries plagued him and he recorded just four sacks. Additionally, Key ballooned from 238 pounds to 270 while sidelined and had to take a leave of absence for "personal reasons" last February. All of that has created a lot of uncertainty around Key heading into the draft. But, the combine will give the defensive end a chance to alleviate fears about his health and work ethic, while also reinforcing his athleticism in what's a weak pass-rusher class.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Dez Bryant's future is uncertain. The Dallas Cowboys receiver hasn't recorded a 1,000-yard season or a 10-plus touchdown campaign since 2014. He's no longer considered among the best at his position, but he's scheduled to count $16.5 million against the cap next season.Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones hinted at the possibility of asking Bryant to take a pay cut on Thursday, but Bryant said he hasn't been approached."I haven't heard a word on that. Before Blake Bortles' fifth-year option becomes fully guaranteed March 14, the Jacksonville Jaguars are exploring their free-agent options at the quarterback position, a league source informed Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The Jaguars exercised the fifth-year option on Bortles in May and he went on to lead Jacksonville to the AFC Championship Game in January. However, considering this year's strong class of free-agent quarterbacks, the Jags are researching how they can upgrade at the position. The period during which teams can enter into contract negotiations with players who will become unrestricted free agents begins March 12. The Jaguars could use that time to reach a deal with a quarterback on the open market, and then cut Bortles before they have to pay his $19-million option. There are still potholes along that route, including - as evidenced by Josh McDaniels' change of heart - the possibility a player could back out.Bortles was inconsistent in 2017, best illustrated by his postseason play, which began with an 87-yard output and concluded with a 293-yard day against the New England Patriots.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The NFL Scouting Combine allows players who share positions to be seen together and compete in head-to-head tests for what can often be the first time. While draft evaluators and speculators constantly debate the merits and superiority of various assessment methods, the eye test and "intangibles" will always be used as trump cards by many scouts and general managers. The philosophical draft strategy of "best player available" versus "position of need" will also wage eternal war. Here's a look at seven tightly contested positions to watch for at the 2018 combine, which runs from March 2-5 in Indianapolis.QuarterbackSam Darnold vs. Josh Rosen vs. Josh Allen vs. Baker MayfieldThe 2018 quarterback class has a little something for everyone. Darnold is viewed as the passer with the highest ceiling despite an unorthodox delivery and a potential need for a year of development under an NFL veteran. Rosen's leadership has often been questioned, but he's viewed as the most NFL-ready with excellent mechanics and footwork. Allen will need to dispel concerns regarding his accuracy in order to force scouts to focus on his 6-foot-5, 233-pound frame. Mayfield was crowned the best player in college football for 2017, but he'll continue answering questions on whether he'll be a leader or a headache in the NFL. The combine will serve as further assessment of their physical abilities as scouts try to determine who'll be the safest pick. Lamar Jackson could very well put all four to shame with his combine test scores, but questions regarding his fit as a prototypical passer will persist.EDGEArden Key vs. Harold LandryNeither player was at his best in 2017, but both Key and Landry have significant potential as game-changing pass-rushers. Key's off-field issues included a four-month leave from LSU last spring. It could deter scouts at the top of the draft and potentially make him a steal on Day 2. Landry will need a good showing in the bench press to show teams he'll be able to break free of blocks. Both are athletically gifted and versatile enough to slide into almost any defensive system. Key could use the combine to present scouts with far too tempting of a skill set to be allowed to slide down the draft board, but Landry is likely to be viewed as the safer choice.Offensive lineQuenton Nelson vs. Connor Williams vs. Mike McGlincheyNFL teams can disregard specified positions in favor of a player's overall ability to protect a franchise quarterback. Nelson, a guard, is viewed as the meanest of the offensive-line options, while still possessing an elite athletic ability. Williams took a step back in his final season at Texas - starting just five games due to a knee injury that took away some lateral quickness - and could even face a potential move from tackle to guard or center depending on his measurements at the combine. He's still technically sound and a strong leader. McGlinchey possesses the necessary skill set, but he'll need to add bulk to his monstrous 6-foot-8 frame in order to hold his own against NFL linemen on the other side of the ball.CornerbackDenzel Ward vs. Josh JacksonJackson holds a height advantage over the stockier Ward. His transition from a wide receiver could also make him the most appealing target for teams seeking a ball hawk in their secondary. He recorded eight interceptions in just his second season as a defensive back at Iowa. Ward possesses an athletic ability to compensate for his shorter stature and can mirror receivers downfield with phenomenal footwork. He could wind up shifting to the inside of the secondary where he can keep tight coverage as a nickel corner.ReceiverChristian Kirk vs. Courtland SuttonKirk and Sutton are stuck battling it out to be the second receiver chosen, as Alabama's Calvin Ridley is widely regarded as the position's top choice. The 5-foot-11 Kirk scored a three-year best of 10 touchdowns in his final season at Texas A&M. The 6-foot-4 Sutton found the end zone 12 times as a receiver and once as a rusher in his final year at SMU. His extra five inches of height could push him ahead of Kirk in the predraft rankings if he's able to demonstrate the necessary speed and show an ability to create space. It's likely to come down to whether teams are seeking a slot receiver, or an outside possession option.Defensive tackleVita Vea vs. Maurice Hurst vs. Da'Ron PayneOne of the positions with the most to be learned from the results of combine tests, Vea, Hurst, and Payne are likely to be lobbying for order in the middle of the first round. Vea is by far the largest of the trio, but he'll need to prove he has the quickness necessary to play on passing downs. Hurst and Payne may be a little undersized in comparison to their peer. Both will need to exhibit an ability to change direction and show the secondary moves needed to get by blockers and stop the run.Running backSaquon Barkley vs. The FieldThe recent NFL success of Ezekiel Elliott and Leonard Fournette as top five picks will earn Barkley a look as high as No. 1 in the 2018 draft. One of few knocks on the Penn State product thus far is that he can be too patient at times, while possessing game-changing skills in both the rushing and passing attacks. More manufactured negative traits are sure to emerge during the overthinking part of draft analysis. It's on the rest of the running-back class that includes Derrius Guice, Ronald Jones II, Sony Michel, and Nick Chubb to have strong performances at the combine to help close Barkley's gap on the secondary group.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. In less than a week, more than 300 prospects will descend upon Lucas Oil Stadium for the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine. The soon-to-be pros will be dissected by potential suitors in what amounts to a job interview ahead of April's draft.Every year, one player emerges as the biggest star of the "Underwear Olympics," either by performance or personality.Entering this year's event, there's no shortage of contenders, including a 6-foot-7 lineman and a Division III corner, but only one will dominate the post-combine headlines. The most outstanding player in college football may also be the player with the most to prove at the combine.Though Baker Mayfield enjoyed a sterling four-year college career, much is still being asked of the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner. The first answer he will provide will be his measurements.Mayfield is expected to measure under 6-foot-1 and has already drawn size comparisons to future Hall of Famer Drew Brees. But it's during the interview process where Mayfield will make his biggest mark. Due to his fiery nature and his penchant for making headlines, both bad and good, Mayfield is most often linked to Johnny Manziel, a fellow Heisman winner who flamed out after just two seasons in the NFL.Mayfield has done his best to distance himself from Manziel and went as far as attending the Senior Bowl in order to meet with NFL executives. He'll get another chance to do so at the combine, where he also said he intends to "do everything" in relation to the drills. This year's quarterback class is deep in first-round talent, but the Oklahoma product can separate himself from the pack both on and off the field with a quality combine. He may be the most heavily scrutinized and watched prospect on account of his backstory, but there's another former collegian that figures to be the star of the event. For NFL fans witnessing the incoming stars for the first time at the combine, it'll be an introduction to Shaquem Griffin. It almost didn't happen, however, as the Central Florida linebacker only received an invite after participating in the Senior Bowl. Now that he's made the cut, all eyes will be on him when he takes the field.Born with a deformed left hand, Griffin had the appendage amputated at a young age. His disability hasn't hindered him on the field, however, as he was his conference's Defensive Player of the Year in his junior season and was named second-team All-American and Peach Bowl Defensive MVP after an undefeated campaign with UCF this year.Despite the use of just one hand, Griffin has proven to be an adept tackler with exceptional ball skills to go along with his high football IQ.For the scouts and execs who want to see him for themselves, Griffin will be put to the test during workouts and drills at the combine. He's currently being forecasted as a mid-round draft pick.Griffin has the chance to become the first one-handed player drafted into the NFL in the modern era. Regardless of how fast he runs or how many sets he completes on the bench press, Griffin will be the star of combine weekend.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Including Grade 1 concussions, which are considered mild with no loss of consciousness, Plummer estimates he suffered 2,500 over the course of his career."If you're not getting at least 10 of those a game, as a middle linebacker in the NFL, that means you didn't play that day," Plummer said. The Miami Dolphins aren't exactly master tacticians when it comes to planning their moves, but slapping Jarvis Landry with the $16.2-million franchise tag Tuesday is one of Miami's all-time head-scratchers.On the face of it, the move makes sense for both parties: The Dolphins now have the time to negotiate with the receiver who led the league in catches last season, and Landry gets a massive one-year pay bump. But, when you begin to dig deeper, the lack of logic behind the move becomes startlingly clear.Landry is no Julio, OBJ, or BrownLandry isn't a top-tier receiver like his reception numbers suggest. Far from it, in fact.Leading the league in catches is a solid achievement, but we judge the position for what they do with those touches.Landry caught 112 passes but somehow failed to eclipse 1,000 yards, averaging 8.8 yards per catch. That puts him 108th in YPC average among qualified receivers (including running backs and tight ends), according to ESPN.The walking corpse that is Jason Witten ranked 107th. The likes of San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk and Landry's teammate Julius Thomas averaged more YPC than he did.YPC certainly isn't everything, and Landry did post a career-high 12.1 YPC in 2016, but that's likely his ceiling (and would've still only put him 56th this season). He's a strong slot player that relies on producing yards after the catch and provides little to nothing in the deep passing game.Landry is now the second-highest paid receiver in the NFL, in front of DeAndre Hopkins and behind Antonio Brown for 2018. The latter two are unquestionably better players, and an important part of that is both provide well-rounded options for their respective offenses. Brown - who was 16th in YPC - has the speed and the separation skills to consistently make game-changing deep-ball plays, while Hopkins - 26th in YPC - is the best receiver in the league in contested or sideline catches. Not only is Landry not on their level, he isn't even playing the same game. Some argue that Landry's strange production is simply a product of the Dolphins' limited passing game, especially with Jay Cutler and not Ryan Tannehill under center in 2017. But slot players all around the league excel with subpar quarterbacks. A 34-year-old Larry Fitzgerald played with Drew Stanton and Blaine Gabbert for more than half the season and still averaged two more yards per catch than Landry, who's nine years his senior.Landry clearly isn't an elite player, but the strangest part of this whole move for Miami was that it appeared they realized this.Dolphins created little negotiation leverageThe Dolphins balked at the offer from Landry's camp over a contract worth $14.5 million per season, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald. So, why would a team so far away from competing for a championship decide to keep a replaceable receiver on a one-year deal that far exceeds its top financial evaluation of him? It's not like Miami are flush with cap space, either. If the Dolphins make logical veteran cuts to the roster, they should have just over $30 million in cap space. Landry will account for over half of that if he signs the tender and doesn't agree to a long-term deal that would reduce the massive 2018 cap hit.For a roster that needs so much work, it's insanity to use half the cap space on a scheme-reliant receiver like Landry. It's also terrible business. If the Dolphins' plan is to re-sign Landry, then it's fair to assume they want to at a lesser price than the reported $14.5 million yearly salary the receiver asked for. The problem for Miami is Landry's worth is now set at $16 million per season thanks to the franchise tag.Usually, the tag helps teams by giving them an affordable (but inflexible and slightly above market value) leverage amount to work from, and players accept a lesser yearly average than the tag in exchange for long-term security. But there are limits to what a player will accept. The tag doesn't work if the team is hoping to force the player into what they believe is his true value. Landry's $14.5 million might have been a doable figure under the tag, but if the Dolphins were OK with paying him around that, why not just get the deal done months ago and stop the constant back and forth in the media between the two parties? If getting him to agree to a cheaper deal was the goal, the smarter move would have been to let him test the open market and hope it would be more tepid than expected. Stranger things have happened, and, as illustrated, Landry might be more valuable to Miami than any other team.Finding adequate trade value will be near impossibleA theory gaining traction behind the move is that Miami will try to tag-and-trade Landry, an attempt to recoup some value for him rather than losing the wideout to free agency in less than a month.A source told Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio that "the quick tag is being interpreted as a desire by the Dolphins to trade Landry."Again, the logic makes sense until you look a little closer.First, Landry needs to cooperate. A trade can't happen until he signs, and he's built a reputation as somewhat of a diva in Miami, openly calling out the team for being "disrespectful" in contract negotiations and occasionally clashing with coaches. Plus, Landry will likely be rooting for the Dolphins to rescind the tag so he can test free agency.Secondly, even if Landry signs his tender, how many teams will be lining up to trade high draft picks and cough up a four-year, $58-million contract for a good slot receiver? Why not pursue Allen Robinson or Sammy Watkins for a lesser yearly price without giving up any other resources?Getting true value for Landry in a tough market would be hard for any team, and the Dolphins' front office has shown they aren't exactly savvy negotiators.Trading Landry could ultimately prove to be a smart move if Miami can ship him to a cap- and pick-rich team like the Cleveland Browns or the San Francisco 49ers and get a return equal to the compensatory 2019 pick they would have received if they allowed him to leave in free agency. But it's also extremely risky. Trade negotiations break down all the time. Teams have second thoughts or a better alternative arises. If the Dolphins did this to trade Landry, the worst-case scenario is they're stuck with an unhappy slot receiver making $16 million on a team with little chance of competing in 2018.(Photo courtesy: Action Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Alshon Jeffery's Super Bowl run in Philadelphia just became more impressive. The Eagles wide receiver underwent successful surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder Wednesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Offseason surgeries are common, but Jeffery's case is notable because he suffered the injury in training camp and didn't miss a game during the entire 2017-18 season.Playing through the pain, the wideout finished with 57 catches, 789 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns during the regular season. He was especially effective in the playoffs, meshing well with Nick Foles and hauling in 12 receptions and three touchdowns over three starts - capped by a 34-yard score in Super Bowl LII.Jeffery signed a one-year contract with the Eagles last March and was rewarded with a four-year, $52-million extension in December. He may start training camp on the active/PUP list but should be ready for Week 1.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. faces constant criticism from the media and football fans for his perceived immaturity and self-centeredness, but that perception isn't shared by everyone in the Giants' locker room."He's not that guy they make him out to be," Giants defensive tackle Damon Harrison said in an appearance on FS1's "Undisputed" on Tuesday. "He's not this immature guy who causes problems everywhere. He's not a problem at all, actually, because if he were, I'd tell you. The Carolina Panthers removed the interim tag from Marty Hurney, officially naming him general manager Wednesday.Hurney re-assumes the full-time role he held with the Panthers from 2002-12. He was succeeded by David Gettleman for the start of the 2013 season. Hurney took over under the interim GM title for the 2017 campaign, after Gettleman was relieved of his duties last summer."We are very fortunate to have Marty as our general manager after he did an exceptional job in the interim role this past season," Panthers COO Tina Becker said. "Marty's guidance and vision helped build the foundation for this team, and his work this season was instrumental in returning the team to the playoffs. We believe he will continue to craft a roster that will win games and contend for a championship."The Panthers went 11-5 in the regular season before losing to the New Orleans Saints in the wild-card round. It was an impressive turnaround from a 6-10 campaign and last-place finish in the NFC South in 2016.Hurney drafted quarterback Cam Newton and linebackers Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis during his first tenure as Panthers GM.He was placed on paid leave earlier this month after his ex-wife filed for a protective order against him. He was reinstated as the interim general manager last week following a league investigation that presented no evidence he violated the NFL's personal conduct policy.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Andrew Luck Watch 2018 is truly underway. The Indianapolis Colts star quarterback's rehab from a shoulder injury that robbed him of the entire 2017 campaign will be one of the defining stories of the offseason.Luck provided a substantial update Tuesday, ruling out a second surgery and confirming he has resumed throwing "a little bit" to strengthen his surgically repaired shoulder. While Luck didn't go into specifics, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the star signal-caller is throwing weighted balls heavier than footballs rather than tossing around a normal football. It's a significant step for the 2012 No. 1 pick, who briefly returned to practice in November and was seen throwing before again experiencing pain in his shoulder, forcing Indy to place him on injured reserve.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian is expected to be available via trade this offseason and Denver will discuss moving him with other teams at the NFL combine at the start of March, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.Siemian started 14 games in 2016 and 10 last season, before ultimately being dropped from the starting lineup as the Broncos attempted to jump-start their struggling offense.Denver's expected to pursue free-agent options, and former first-rounder Paxton Lynch still has two years remaining on his rookie deal, so it appears Siemian will be the odd man out. It's unlikely he'll be pursued as a starter in the open market, but he could be brought in to compete for a job in training camp - especially considering he carries just a $1.92-million cap hit in 2018, the last year of his current contract, according to Spotrac.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Get to know the top prospects for the 2018 NFL Draft ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine, which takes place from March 2-5 in Indianapolis.Offense | DefenseTremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia TechAge: 19 Height: 6-5 Weight: 236 lbs.2017 stats: 108 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 3 forced fumblesEdmunds is one of the most exciting prospects in the 2018 draft. Just 19 years old, the linebacker possesses unique versatility as an off-ball defender and edge rusher. He also has a rare blend of size, length, and speed for his position, which led to a productive career at Virginia Tech. Edmunds tackles with incredible efficiency and has the potential to be an impact player in any defensive scheme. Due in part to his age, the former Hokie does rely on his athleticism at times, leading to lapses in coverage and slow play recognition. But while his instincts are average, they could be fine-tuned by NFL coaches. If Edmunds reaches his potential, he could be an All-Pro defender at the next level.Bradley Chubb, DE, North Carolina StateAge: 21 Height: 6-4 Weight: 275 lbs.2017 stats: 72 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 1 forced fumbleBradley Chubb checks all of the boxes for scouts. He has great size, length, and athletic ability, possesses a great motor, has quick hands, and enjoyed a productive collegiate career. Chubb is extremely disruptive on the edge, actively looking to strip ball-carriers and consistently blowing up opposing running plays. Versatility is an underrated part of his game, as he can play a variety of positions along the defensive line (think Philadephia's Brandon Graham) and is dangerous anywhere he lines up. Chubb's main knock is that he plays with a high pad level at times, which leads to inconsistent balance while being blocked. Regardless, he's one of the top players in this class.Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, AlabamaAge: 21 Height: 6-1 Weight: 201 lbs.2017 stats: 60 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 7 passes defensed, 1 interception, 1 forced fumbleThis former Alabama defensive back is fun to watch. A versatile chess piece, Fitzpatrick excels whether he's manning cornerback, dime linebacker, or high safety. He plays with tremendous intensity and wants the ball at all costs, as evidenced by his nine career interceptions and 24 passes defensed. The former four-star recruit is a fast and reactive player who's strong in zone coverage, but still has some work to do in man-to-man schemes. Meanwhile, don't underestimate his skills as a blitzer. Fitzpatrick's aggressiveness is a staple of his game, but it sometimes led to missed tackles and receivers finding separation out of breaks during his college career.Vita Vea, DT, WashingtonAge: 23 Height: 6-5 Weight: 344 lbs.2017 stats: 43 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 4 batted passesVea flashes star potential on tape. Few college players in recent years were as dominant as the former Washington star who weighs in at 344 pounds. Vea wins countless one-on-one matchups, overpowering lighter interior linemen with ease. He's already a dominant run defender, consistently moving the line of scrimmage backward even while double-teamed. His pass-rush technique, however, is somewhat raw. Vea displays sloppy footwork at times and hits the ground as a result. He's also a heavy-stepper who prefers to win with brute force, but has serious bull-rush ability. If he can develop secondary pass-rush moves as a pro, look out.Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio StateAge: 20 Height: 5-10 Weight: 191 lbs.2017 stats: 37 tackles, 15 passes defensed, 2 interceptionsDenzel Ward is not the tallest cornerback prospect in this year's class, but he can cover with the best of them. After being stuck behind Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley in 2016, Ward had an excellent final season at Ohio State in 2017, earning first-team All-American honors. Blessed with blazing speed and exceptional athletic ability, the defensive back uses quick feet and strong balance to mirror his opponents in man coverage. He also has ideal recovery and closing speeds, allowing just 32 percent of passes to be completed over last two years. There are concerns over Ward's slender frame and lack of strength, but the former Buckeye will be a Day 1 starter at nickel corner. Some teams will question his fit as a boundary defender, but he could have a Chris Harris-type impact in the slot.Derwin James, S, Florida StateAge: 22 Height: 6-3 Weight: 211 lbs.2017 stats: 84 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 11 passes defensed, 2 interceptionsA former five-star recruit, Derwin James lived up to the hype during his career at Florida State. Much like Fitzpatrick, James is a versatile weapon who makes an impact all over the field. The former Seminole possesses the mental makeup and competitive attitude to lead an NFL defense, while he's a fast, strong, and athletic tackler who's also effective when blitzing. His 2016 knee injury may frighten some teams, but James worked tirelessly to improve on and off the field the following season. Although the safety is extremely talented, he's often cautious against the run, absorbing blocks rather than initiating contact. The best NFL fit for James will likely be an attacking role near the line of scrimmage, where coaches can use him to create mismatches in multiple phases of the game.Roquan Smith, LB, GeorgiaAge: 20 Height: 6-1 Weight: 225 lbs.2017 stats: 137 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveriesSmith is everything scouts look for in a modern-day linebacker. What the former Georgia Bulldog lacks in size, he makes up for in intelligence and elite athleticism. Smith is a true sideline-to-sideline defender, as his closing speed and pursuit both rival Luke Kuechly's coming out of Boston College. Once he diagnoses a play, opposing offenses must accept failure. In coverage, Smith is best at patrolling the middle of the field in a zone scheme, as his tape does show the odd lapse in man coverage. He must also learn how to take on blocks more effectively, as larger linemen can dominate if he's unable to slip from their grasp. Overall, Smith has All-Pro potential if placed in a scheme that utilizes his strengths.Da'Ron Payne, DT, AlabamaAge: 20 Height: 6-2 Weight: 308 lbs.2017 stats: 53 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interceptionWith incredible run-stuffing skills and two-gap discipline, Payne has every chance to succeed early on in his NFL career. He has ideal strength, build, and athleticism for the position, as few players in college football possess the former Crimson Tide defender's blend of size and movement skills. For these reasons, scouts are perplexed as to how Payne's natural abilities did not lead to more production at Alabama. Part of the reason is his lack of pass-rush prowess, as the defensive lineman is often stonewalled when his first move is blocked. However, Payne's dangerous bull rush and continually improving technique are reasons why many pundits are intrigued by his untapped potential.Josh Jackson, CB, IowaAge: 21 Height: 6-1 Weight: 192 lbs.2017 stats: 48 tackles, 18 passes defensed, 8 interceptions, 1 forced fumbleDescribing Jackson with one term is quite simple: ball hawk. He led the NCAA with 26 combined interceptions and passes defensed in 2017, displaying advanced coverage skills for a young player. The former Iowa cornerback offers ideal size for the position and possesses off-the-charts instincts. NFL teams will be concerned with his lack of playing time (14 career starts) and deficiencies in run defense, but the former Hawkeye made more impact plays last season than most corners in this class made during their collegiate careers. Some analysts also question his long speed, so if Jackson runs well at the combine, his name will assuredly be called within the first 15 picks this April.Marcus Davenport, DE, Texas-San AntonioAge: 21 Height: 6-6 Weight: 259 lbs.2017 stats: 5 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, 3 forced fumblesDavenport possesses the ideal height and length for an NFL edge rusher, flashing dominance during his career at UTSA. He uses a multitude of pass-rush moves to beat offensive tackles, often wrapping up ball-carriers with ease. The Senior Bowl standout has all the tools to succeed, but is still considered a raw prospect. He struggles to diagnose plays and his height results in rushing with high pad levels. Slipping incoming blockers in run defense is another concern, but Davenport is a student of the game who improved every year during college. He fits well into both 4-3 and 3-4 schemes, increasing his value to potential suitors.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have released two-time Pro Bowl running back Doug Martin after six seasons, the team announced. The move saves the Bucs $6.75 million in cap space and adds another intriguing name to the free-agent running back pool. The former first-round pick had three years remaining on his contract, but due to a 2016 suspension for a performance-enhancing drug violation that also sidelined him for the first three games of the 2017 campaign, the remaining guaranteed money was voided.Aside from his off-field issues, the 29-year-old has struggled to consistently perform on the field. He has four seasons in which he failed to rush for more than 500 yards and two in which he exceeded 1,400 rushing yards. His inability to be a reliable featured back, coupled with his big cap savings, made his release a no-brainer for Tampa Bay.The Bucs will likely now look to add a starting running back to pair with Jameis Winston in the backfield, either through free agency or high in the draft.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Philadelphia Eagles submitted a trademark request for the term "Philly Special," according to ESPN's Darren Rovell. The Eagles intend to feature the phrase primarily on apparel merchandise, but could face competition from seven other groups who've filed the same request. The "Philly Special" was the name of the play that saw quarterback Nick Foles catch a touchdown pass from tight end Trey Burton on a gutsy fourth-down call near the goal line in Super Bowl LII - easily the most famous moment from the game. There was some controversy over whether the Eagles lined up in an illegal formation on the play, but it counted, regardless. Philadelphia topped the New England Patriots 41-33 on Feb. 5 to capture its first Super Bowl in franchise history.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
