Plenty of NFL teams are searching for new head coaches, coordinators, and front-office staff. Follow here for updates on the league's hiring carousel from Jan. 8.The NFL has its second new head coach of 2018: Matt Nagy. The Chicago Bears announced the hiring of the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Monday. Nagy has just one year of experience as a coordinator but was praised for turning around K.C.'s offense late in the regular season after being given play-calling duties.Nagy isn't the only man on the way out of the Chiefs. Assistant head coach Brad Childress is retiring, sources told Tom Pelissero and James Palmer of NFL Network. Childress spent 2016 as the co-offensive coordinator with Nagy, and likely would have been in contention for the solo role. Instead, the Chiefs will look at another in-house candidate, running backs coach Eric Bieniemy, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Meanwhile, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks' busy week kicks off with an interview with the New York Giants on Tuesday, followed by meetings with the Arizona Cardinals and the Indianapolis Colts on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, according to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. The Cardinals will also interview Atlanta Falcons special teams coach Keith Armstrong on Monday, according to Kent Somers of azcentral sports. The Cincinnati Bengals fought off a reported late push by Jon Gruden to steal Teryl Austin, hiring the Detroit Lions defensive coordinator for the same role. The Oakland Raiders' new head coach wanted Austin to be his assistant head coach/defensive backs coach. The Green Bay Packers have zeroed in on former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine, who's scheduled to interview for the defensive coordinator position, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Pettine last coached in 2015, guiding the Browns to a combined 10-22 record across two seasons. The San Francisco 49ers named Ken Norton Jr. as their assistant head coach. Norton previously served as the Raiders' defensive coordinator.Lastly, the Browns are finally hiring an offensive coordinator, and Hue Jackson is looking at an old friend in former Bengals OC Ken Zampese, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Zampese was fired by the Bengals after just 18 games in September. He and Jackson spent time together on Cincinnati's staff.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The Cincinnati Bengals have hired Teryl Austin as their defensive coordinator, the team confirmed Monday.Austin previously served as the Detroit Lions' DC from 2014-2017.The coordinator became available after the dismissal of Jim Caldwell. He interviewed for the Lions' head coaching vacancy, but it appears he wasn't in serious contention for the job.Austin was in demand elsewhere, however, as Jon Gruden made a push to hire him as the Oakland Raiders' assistant head coach/defensive backs coach, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Clearly, Gruden wasn't able to convince Austin to turn down the chance to continue as a coordinator.Austin replaces Paul Guenther, who left Cincinnati to join Gruden in Oakland as his defensive coordinator.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Chicago Bears have hired Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as their new head coach, the team announced Monday.Nagy spent five seasons in Kansas City, taking over as offensive coordinator in 2017.Head coach Andy Reid called plays for the first 11 games of the season, but handed the duties to Nagy in an attempt to end the Chiefs' offensive woes. The change worked. K.C. rattled off four wins over the final five games of the season to win the AFC West, with the offense averaging just over 28 points per game with Nagy in charge.Nagy intends to call his own plays in Chicago, sources told Chris Mortensen of ESPN.However, the Chiefs were bounced from the playoffs in the wild-card round Saturday, and significant blame was placed on Nagy's shoulders for failing to give Kareem Hunt enough second-half carries while K.C. held the lead. The Bears made it clear they intended to hire an offensive-minded head coach to develop No. 2 overall pick Mitch Trubisky, possibly motivated by the success of Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams and Jared Goff.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden wants some long-term clarity for his team at the game's most important position. The Redskins have hit starting quarterback Kirk Cousins with the franchise tag in each of the last two offseasons and could do so again in 2018, though it will cost an extraordinary $34.5 million. If it was up to Gruden, the Redskins would decide on Cousins' future this offseason - one way or another."I think something has to be done," Gruden said, according to The Washington Post's Dan Steinberg. "I personally don't want to go through another one-year deal, and just (keep going) one year, one year. I think you want to have a quarterback in here that’s going to be here. And hopefully that is Kirk, and if not, we have to move on and do what we have to do as an organization."For the most part, the great quarterbacks are in the same system year in and year out, and are developing in that system. (Teams are) not holding our breath every March and April, waiting for the guy. But if that's the case, that's the case. But we like Kirk and his development. He's played well at times, without a doubt, proven that he’s a good starting NFL quarterback."Cousins produced his third straight 4,000-yard passing season in 2017, but was unable to lead the Redskins to the postseason. While Washington has been reluctant to offer Cousins top-tier money, the veteran pivot has the leverage to possibly challenge Matthew Stafford for the NFL's highest-paid player title thanks to the prospect of a third franchise tag.If the Redskins ultimately allow Cousins to leave, whether through free agency or via trade, a high-stakes bidding war for his services is sure to take place.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The first round of the 2017 NFL playoffs is in the books. While the victors each look onward, four more teams - the Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Rams, Buffalo Bills, and Carolina Panthers - saw their 2017 campaigns end this weekend. With that in mind, it's time to assess the No. 1 task on each losing team's offseason to-do list.Chiefs - Find a legitimate No. 1 WRThe Chiefs drafted Tyreek Hill to be a solid kick returner, and everything else was supposed to be a bonus. But now two seasons into his career, Hill's at the top of Kansas City's wide receiver depth chart and is asked to provide a lot.The second-year pro started off Saturday's matchup against Tennessee by dropping his first two targets. It was further evidence that the Chiefs need to upgrade their passing attack with rookie Patrick Mahomes reportedly expected to become the starting quarterback next season.Related: Alex Smith isn't done yet, but his time in Kansas City isKansas City ran a short-pass offense for much of Alex Smith's tenure, but Mahomes' arm strength and gunslinger mentality will require more downfield threats than what the roster currently has to offer.Rams - Support Gurley with another starThe Rams seemingly added a big-time receiving threat in Sammy Watkins last offseason, but things didn't quite pan out.Watkins - who's set to be a free agent in March - finished fourth on the team in both catches and receiving yards despite missing only one game. The Rams are unlikely to offer him a lucrative long-term contract, so there's a good chance the former first-round pick will test free agency.Meanwhile, Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp proved to be productive pieces of the Rams' offense, largely because defenses usually had their eyes on Todd Gurley - and rightfully so. The third-year running back was an MVP candidate this season, but doing it all again will be a tough task, especially with defenses keying on him even more.If it isn't Watkins, the Rams need to find someone else to support Gurley - by giving him more space to operate, and by taking advantage of their own opportunities while defenses are preoccupied with the talented runner. Pending free agents Terrelle Pryor, Marqise Lee, Allen Robinson, and Jarvis Landry could all be candidates for this role.Bills - Make a clear decision on Taylor's future Is Tyrod Taylor the Bills' quarterback or not? He was benched earlier this season while the team was in playoff position (in favor of a vastly underdeveloped rookie), and then led Buffalo to a wild-card spot, only to disappoint on Sunday in Jacksonville.Taylor was far from the only passer to struggle against the Jaguars' stout defense this season, but a three-point output with two interceptions in the franchise's first playoff game since 1999 wasn't particularly inspiring. The seventh-year pro is in a similar predicament to last year, as the Bills have until March 16 to keep him or ditch him before his $6-million roster bonus kicks in. For the Bills to properly build their franchise up or simply recruit free agents, all parties need to be clear about whether Taylor - or someone else - is the quarterback moving forward.Panthers - De-age the pass rushThe top story this offseason surrounding the Panthers will undoubtedly be the sale of the franchise, but since that isn't being controlled by the front office, we're going to focus on improving the roster. The Panthers' leading pass rushers in 2017 were 30-year-old Mario Addison and 37-year-old Julius Peppers, who both recorded 11 sacks. And the defense struggled to get pressure on Drew Brees throughout the loss Sunday, recording only one sack and regularly needing to rush more than four players - which barely helped. In fact, Brees went 11-of-17 for 259 yards with two touchdowns and a 122.8 passer rating against the blitz on Sunday, according to Pro Football Focus.Since 2010, the Panthers have selected only one edge-rushing player (Kony Ealy in 2014) in the first two rounds of the draft. Changing that trend needs to be a priority this offseason, and it wouldn't hurt to pursue 25-year-old Demarcus Lawrence or 24-year-old Aaron Lynch in free agency as well.(Photos Courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cam Newton maintained after Sunday's wild-card game that he did not suffer a concussion during the contest and was only hit in the eye.On the play in question, the Carolina Panthers quarterback turned and ran directly into a heavy hit from New Orleans Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata. Newton was clearly shaken up after the hit and had to be helped to the sideline. He was removed from the game for the end of the Panthers' drive.Newton was then taken to the medical tent, but the team quickly announced he had been evaluated and cleared of a concussion. He returned to the game on Carolina's next series."It wasn't my head, it was my eye," Newton said at his postgame press conference. "My helmet had came down low enough over my eye lid and got pressed by a player's stomach, I believe. I thought maybe somebody stuck a finger in my eye."Newton does wear a visor on his helmet. The NFL stated after the game that it has been in contact with the Panthers' medical staff with regards to the situation and will have no further comment "until those conversations are completed," according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Nonetheless, the whole ordeal garnered plenty of public scrutiny.

Officiating has been at the center of the NFL playoffs and it was under the microscope again after Sunday's wild-card game between the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints. On the final drive, with the Panthers at the Saints' 21-yard line and driving for a game-winning score, Carolina quarterback Cam Newton was flagged for intentional grounding. Saints pass-rusher Cameron Jordan had Newton in his grasp, but the pivot managed to throw the ball out of bounds.Newton thought he had gotten outside of the tackle box to negate the grounding call. Head coach Ron Rivera felt the same."I thought our quarterback was out of the pocket. I thought there was a receiver in the vicinity. I thought the ball passed the line of scrimmage. I mean, I don't know. It would be nice to have the explanation ... I didn't get the explanation," Rivera said after the game, according to NFL.com."We have a chance to score on that last drive, you know, and I kind of feel like it was taken away from us."The Saints' defense held and New Orleans went on to win the game 31-26.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. NEW ORLEANS (AP) Drew Brees passed for 376 yards and two touchdowns, and the New Orleans Saints held off Carolina's late comeback bid to seal a 31-26 victory in their NFC wild-card game on Sunday. The Panthers had a first down on the Saints 26-yard line with 58 seconds left, but heavy pressure by All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan a couple plays later induced an intentional grounding penalty on Carolina quarterback Cam Newton, making it third-and-25 on the Saints 34 and a required 10-second runoff left 22 seconds on the clock. After an incompletion in the end zone on third down, Vonn Bell sacked Newton on a safety blitz, ensuring the Saints (12-5) swept all three meetings with Carolina (11-6) this season, in addition to winning their first playoff game in four seasons.Brees' touchdowns went for 80-yards to Ted Ginn and 9 yards to tight end Josh Hill. Fullback Zach line and running back Alvin Kamara each ran for short touchdowns, the latter set up by Michael Thomas 46-yard reception.Thomas caught eight passes for 131 yards on a day when the Saints needed the passing game to compensate for a ground game that struggled to get going.Helped by the presence of tight end Greg Olsen - who did not play in the teams' previous two meetings - Newton marched Carolina into Saints territory more often than not. But the Panthers stalled four times from inside the New Orleans 25, settling for four field goal attempts on those drives, one of which kicker Graham Gano surprisingly missed.Olsen had eight catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. Newton finished 24 of 40 passing for 349 yards and two touchdowns, the other a 56-yard scoring strike to Christian McCaffrey that pulled the Panthers within a touchdown with 4:09 left. But Newton was also sacked four times, once each by Bell, Jordan, Jonathan Freeney, and David Onyemata. The sack by Onyemata came as Newton tried to spin away from Tyeler Davison and slammed his head into Onymata's chest. Newton was checked for a concussion, but missed only one play before returning to the game.Still, the Panthers were in striking distance for the win after a failed gamble by Saints coach Sean Payton, who elected to keep the offense on the field on fourth-and-short with two minutes remaining. He hoped to run out the clock on Carolina, which was out of timeouts. It backfired when Brees' pass as he scrambled to his right was intercepted by Adams, giving Carolina the ball at its 31 with 1:51 to go.INJURIESPanthers: Newton missed one play - a failed third-and-long - while being evaluated for a concussion after Onyemata's sack. Cornerback Daryl Worley briefly was placed in the concussion protocol but also cleared to return during the game.Saints: Starting left guard Andrus Peat was carted off the field with a left shin injury. The Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the Buffalo Bills 10-3 on Sunday and will face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional round.Blake Bortles put together one decent drive all day, doing as much with his legs as his arm, and the defensive-minded Jacksonville Jaguars eked out an ugly and sometimes unwatchable 10-3 victory against the Buffalo Bills in an AFC wild-card game Sunday. In the postseason for the first time since January 2008, the third-seeded Jaguars (11-6) advanced to play at No. 2 seed Pittsburgh next week. The sixth-seeded Bills (9-8) will head home after ending the longest, current playoff drought in North American professional sports.Bortles was a big reason Jacksonville won the game and a big reason it was so close. This was far from a passing clinic. It was more like a painful exercise in overcoming poor passing.Bortles was off most of the day, misfiring short and long, but made up for it with 88 yards rushing. He scrambled for a long first down run after fumbling the ball late, prompting a Bills assistant to slam a clipboard and eliciting a huge grin from Bortles.''We weren't sharp, we made some bad plays and did some stupid stuff, but we found a way to win and that's all that matters,'' Bortles said.He completed 12 of 23 passes for 87 yards, with a touchdown. His TD pass to backup tight end Ben Koyack late in the third quarter was his best throw of the game. It also was a gutsy call on fourth-and-goal from the 1.Bortles did the rest on the ground, scrambling for first downs and helping Jacksonville win its first playoff game at home since the 1997 season.''You know, when we got beat last week at Tennessee, I didn't run at all, so I thought we got beat without kind of shooting all of our shots, so I said it made it difficult, so let's find some ways to move the ball and do some different stuff,'' Bortles said. The Bills had plenty of chances down the stretch, but a huge penalty against Charles Clay and then a tackle that knocked quarterback Tyrod Taylor out of the game ended any threat of a comeback.Taylor slammed his helmet hard against the ground after getting thrown down by Dante Fowler Jr. He had to be helped off the field and forced backup Nathan Peterman into the game with 1:27 remaining. All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey tipped and then intercepted Peterman's third pass, and the Jaguars ran out the clock. The Bills finished with 263 yards, with 119 of those coming from hobbled running back LeSean McCoy (ankle). The Jags had a measly 230 yards. Leonard Fournette ran 21 times for 57 yards.HUGE SWINGTrailing 10-3 with about six minutes to play, the Bills looked as if they picked up a first down on an 11-yard pass from Tyrod Taylor to Clay. Jacksonville players standing on the sideline pointed to Clay's feet, and coach Doug Marrone threw the challenge flag. Officials overturned the completion, saying Clay was out of bounds and setting up a third-and-10 play from the Jacksonville 48-yard line. Linebacker Myles Jack sacked Taylor on the next play, forcing a punt.INJURIESBills: Safety Micah Hyde left the game in the third quarter and was being evaluated for a concussion. Cornerback Tre'Davious White went to the locker room in the fourth to be treated for cramps. Safety Colt Anderson injured his right shoulder in the fourth trying to make a diving interception. Guard Richie Incognito (shoulder) and Clay (hamstring) left briefly in the first half but returned.Jaguars: Linebacker Paul Posluszny left the game with a hip injury, tried to return and then headed to the locker room for further evaluation. He was listed as questionable and returned to the sideline after halftime. Receiver/punt returner Jaydon Mickens left with a hamstring injury and did not return.UP NEXTThe Jaguars will play at second-seeded Pittsburgh next Sunday, a rematch from Week 5. Ben Roethlisberger threw five interceptions, and Jacksonville won 30-9. The Steelers have won 10 of 11 since, the lone loss coming against New England.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Warning: Story contains coarse languageLeBron James has one key piece of advice for the Cleveland Browns: Do better. After a "perfect" season in which the Browns went 0-16, some cynical fans of the NFL side marched through the Cleveland streets surrounding FirstEnergy Stadium - during a brutal cold front, nonetheless - "celebrating" the Browns' winless campaign. Though the parade was truthfully a protest in disguise, Browns players ripped into the thousands who attended. While James - an Ohio native himself - sympathizes with the team's disappointed players, winning one game over the past two seasons doesn't exactly give the Browns the benefit of the doubt in his mind."Fuck yeah, I'd be pissed," James told The Athletic's Jason Lloyd. "But how are you going to be pissed at the fans? It's not like they don't show up. I mean, damn. It's 1-31. If our fans decided they want to have a fucking parade and we were 1-31 the last two years? You can't be mad at that. It's fucked up."I understand that as a player, but you've got to try to fix that shit. It could be worse. How 'bout they just boycott a season until y'all win two games in a row?"For the record, the last time the Browns won two games in a row was November 2014, when they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cincinnati Bengals in back-to-back weeks.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Los Angeles Rams' Cinderella story came to an end Saturday night with a first-round playoff loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The Rams own one of the youngest rosters in the league and are led by the youngest head coach in NFL history, but they wouldn't use inexperience as an excuse."This is an experience we can learn from. But I don't think this game was too big for our guys," head coach Sean McVay said after the game, according to Joe Curley of the Ventura County Star. "It's going to be great motivation going into the offseason program."L.A. entered the game as the highest scoring team in the league, but could only muster 13 points against the Falcons defense."Certainly this is a humbling game," McVay said. Despite a third consecutive playoff appearance and career-high statistics, it appears Alex Smith's tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs may be coming to an end.The team is reportedly ready to trade Smith in the offseason, Patrick Mahomes had his year on the bench, and another heart-breaking playoff loss can justify a new direction. Kansas City can also release Smith without taking a major cap hit. While the 33-year-old has likely suited up for his last home game at Arrowhead Stadium, Smith shouldn't hang up his pads yet.The 2005 first overall pick was what the Chiefs needed him to be in 2017: A veteran presence who commanded the offense and kept them at a division-winning level while their first-round pick, Mahomes, could develop his skills and adapt to the pro game. But he also brought something new and unexpected to a Chiefs team yearning for offensive creativity. In his 13th season as a pro, Smith showed improved skills as a deep thrower and set career highs in virtually every major statistical category.Category Stat Career Rank*Completion %67.51stCompletions3411stAttempts5052ndPass Yards40421stPass TDs261stINTs51stQB Rating104.71st*Among seasons with at least 15 games playedThis year's draft could see some combination of five to seven quarterbacks selected in the first two rounds, which means there are going to be several teams welcoming a hopeful franchise passer to their organization. However, it is rare for a rookie QB to be ready on Day 1.Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Mason Rudolph, and Luke Falk all have the potential to be stars in the NFL, but the differences between the college and pro games make it virtually impossible for any team to definitively say a quarterback will be ready to carry an offense immediately upon being drafted.Enter Alex Smith, who proved this season he can tune out the noise associated with a highly touted rookie QB and produce a successful campaign. The Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, and Washington Redskins are all potential suitors to bring in the crafty veteran, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. In terms of logical fits, the Broncos and Cardinals appear to be best suited for Smith. Both squads have ample talent on defense and possess enough weapons for Smith to run a productive offense. The combinations of Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson, or Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders would welcome the addition of a veteran pivot with the talent and experience of Smith. The Jets, should they choose not to bring back Josh McCown, could use Smith's leadership. Jacksonville and Buffalo are both in the playoffs with their current starters, but while Jaguars owner Shad Khan has committed to Blake Bortles as his quarterback of the future, there does seem to be a lack of commitment to Tyrod Taylor in Buffalo, with his infamous benching for rookie Nathan Peterman still fresh in the minds of all those involved.Washington's interest in Smith relies solely on whether it can keep - or even wants - Kirk Cousins for the years to come. The Browns hired former Chiefs general manager Jon Dorsey to fill the same role in their organization, so it's possible he makes a concerted effort to bring Smith in as the team develops its young talent.Smith did pretty much everything he could to try to convince the Chiefs he can still sling the ball and lead an offense in his 13th season. While they may move on from him for the long-term interests of the club, they can't deny Smith still has plenty to offer an NFL team - even if it is just for the immediate future.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was left confused and frustrated by the officials several times throughout Saturday's wild-card loss to the Tennessee Titans. The officials, as has been the case around the league all year, came under heavy scrutiny during the postseason opener, which saw Kansas City blow an 18-point advantage and lose 22-21 at home."Listen, I don't really have anything good to say there so I'm just kind of going to stay away from any comments on those guys," Reid said postgame, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com. "Don't want to get fined or whatever. It's not worth it."Among the key calls made by Jeff Triplette's crew was a down-by-contact ruling on the Titans' Marcus Mariota during a sack. The quarterback was ruled down before fumbling the football, even though the replay showed the ball was loose ahead of his knee touching the ground.Later in the contest, Mariota was ruled down by forward progress while he was spinning out of a sack on a two-point conversion. He wound up fumbling the ball, which could've been returned by Kansas City for two points, but the play had already been ruled dead.Neither scenario could be reviewed as the play had been blown dead via forward progress.Former vice president of officiating Mike Pereira criticized the officiating crew's performance afterward:

The Kansas City Chiefs' season ended earlier than they anticipated. The No. 4 seed in the AFC coughed up an 18-point lead in a 22-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, setting up an offseason of uncertainty.Chief among that will be quarterback Alex Smith.Despite leading Kansas City to a 10-6 record and AFC West title, the Chiefs are said to be open to trading the veteran pivot. The team set up its future by trading up in April's draft to select quarterback Patrick Mahomes.Smith has just one year left on his four-year, $68-million contract, and intends to see it through."Yeah, I mean, you kidding me? I signed the contract," Smith said when asked after the game if he'd like to stay in Kansas City, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com."I'm under contract for another year, so like I said, I'm not thinking about anything else. Right now, obviously disappointed. Like I said, I felt like we had a good chance, and it's gone."Under Smith's direction, the Chiefs raced out to a 5-0 start to the season, hit a lull in which they lost six of their next seven games, then won their final four contests. On Saturday, Smith threw two first-half touchdowns to give Kansas City a 21-3 cushion, but went 5 of 10 for 33 yards in the second half. The 13-year veteran wasn't prepared to dive further into his future so soon after the loss."The game just ended," Smith said. "We'll get into all of that in the next couple of weeks."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons showed the upstart Los Angeles Rams what playoff poise is all about.Ryan passed for 218 yards and hit Julio Jones for an 8-yard touchdown with 5:48 to play, and the defending NFC champion Falcons advanced from the wild-card round with a methodical 26-13 victory over the Rams on Saturday night.Devonta Freeman rushed for an early score and Matt Bryant kicked four field goals for the Falcons (11-6), who spoiled the Rams' first playoff game in 13 years while showing off the postseason poise they earned from last season's journey to the Super Bowl.''This game's kind of the way our season's been, tough,'' Ryan said. ''We had to grind it out. Defense played really well. Offensively, we're going against a great defense tonight. We ran the football, our guys played up front so hard, and then in the second half we started to get it going a little bit. So, I'm just proud of it.''Atlanta never trailed at the Coliseum while winning playoff games in consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history. The Falcons advanced to face the top-seeded Eagles on Jan. 13 in Philadelphia.''Doesn't matter where we're going, we're going,'' Ryan said. ''And that's the most exciting part.''Jones caught nine passes for 94 yards as Atlanta's offense chewed up the clock and field position. The Falcons jumped to an early 13-0 lead while capitalizing on two early mistakes by Pharoh Cooper, the Rams' Pro Bowl kick returner. The Falcons' defense did more than enough to slow down the NFL's highest-scoring offense, harassing Jared Goff into a 24-for-45 performance in his playoff debut.''We knew it was going to take all four quarters,'' Falcons linebacker Deion Jones said. ''All my guys were ready to fight `til the end, and it was great.''Robert Woods caught nine passes for 142 yards for the NFC West champion Rams (11-6), but rookie Cooper Kupp scored the Rams' only touchdown late in the first half.Atlanta held MVP candidate Todd Gurley to 101 yards rushing - just 43 in the first three quarters - and four receptions for a mere 10 yards. The Falcons ruined a celebratory night for the Rams, who rebounded from a rough homecoming season in 2016 with an outstanding debut year under 31-year-old Sean McVay, the youngest head coach to reach the playoffs in NFL history.A raucous crowd of 74,300 packed the Coliseum on a crisp evening for the first NFL playoff game in the nation's second-largest city since early 1994. Los Angeles went 21 years without pro football before the Rams returned last season, and the franchise emphatically ended a 13-year streak of non-winning seasons this fall with an inspiring run to the Rams' first division title since 2003.But the Falcons have been here before, and they showed it.Although the Falcons' offense took a step back in production this season, Atlanta chipped away at the Rams' defense throughout the Coliseum return of offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, who coached USC here until 2015.Ryan was methodical under relentless pressure from All-Pro lineman Aaron Donald, repeatedly avoiding trouble and making big throws. Freeman rushed for 66 yards, and Mohamed Sanu had a key 52-yard gain on a fourth-quarter screen pass while finishing with four catches for 75 yards.Cooper is headed to the Pro Bowl after his outstanding regular season as a kick returner, but the second-year pro's misadventures in his playoff debut cost the Rams dearly. He muffed a punt that bounced off teammate Blake Countess in the first quarter, and Bryant subsequently hit the Falcons' first field goal. After Bryant's second field goal later in the quarter, Cooper got stripped by Damontae Kazee during a kickoff return at the Rams 32, and the Falcons drove for Freeman's short TD run.The Rams' offense struggled to get moving, but finally figured it out late in the first half. Goff made several sharp throws on a 79-yard drive ending in Kupp's TD catch.Los Angeles then got the ball back and mounted another quick drive, but settled for Sam Ficken's first field goal and a 13-10 halftime deficit. The Falcons' offense got back to its methodical work in the second half, mounting two clock-chewing drives ending in field goals by Bryant. The Rams' defense simply couldn't get off the field, whether due to missed tackles or clever playcalling by the Falcons.Los Angeles trimmed the lead to 19-13 with 10:49 to play, but the Falcons made another drive highlighted by that beautiful screen pass from a blitz-avoiding Bryant to Sanu.Jones then caught the sixth playoff TD pass of his career. Goff drove the Rams deep into Falcons territory, but L.A. turned it over on down at the Atlanta 5 with 2:05 to play. The Falcons stopped the Rams again on downs at midfield with 1:08 left.UP NEXTAfter the Falcons' defensive performance against Goff, they look like a potential problem for the powerful Eagles without quarterback Carson Wentz in the early Saturday divisional playoff game.---For more NFL coverage: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLCopyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Despite getting the Tennessee Titans into the playoffs, head coach Mike Mularkey admitted Saturday he may have been on the hot seat heading into Wild Card Weekend. When asked following his club's massive 22-21 comeback victory over the Kansas City Chiefs about whether he felt his job was secure entering Saturday's game, Mularkey was blunt."No, I haven't had any support to say that I was (safe), so, no," he told reporters, as transcribed by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. "I just assumed the worst."The third-year coach saw his club fall behind 21-3 in the first half before mounting an impressive second-half comeback to keep its season alive. He called the talk about his job status leading into Saturday's game "ridiculous," and added that it affected his state of mind throughout the week."I don't think it's fair for my family. And if it has an effect on my family, it has an effect on me," he said. "So, yeah, I'd say it had a big effect on me."Mularkey led Tennessee to a 9-7 record in the regular season.
