Jets' Burmistrov slapped with diving fine
Winnipeg Jets forward Alexander Burmistrov is the latest player to be caught red-handed.Burmistrov was handed a $2,000 fine for diving/embellishment Thursday, the league announced. The 24-year-old was issued a warning in an Oct. 27 game against the Los Angeles Kings, and was issued his second citation during an incident in the third period with Arizona Coyotes defenseman Michael Stone on Jan. 26.The fine makes Burmistrov the latest in a slew of players who have been caught trying to milk referees for a penalty call. Last month saw New Jersey Devils forwards Bobby Farnham and Jordin Tootoo, as well as Burmistrov's teammate, Nikolaj Ehlers, slapped with $2,000 diving fines.Burmistrov's next offense will earn him a $3,000 fine.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Devils' Stempniak could be biggest trade deadline bargain
Lee Stempniak is without a doubt one of the best stories in the NHL this season, but that story may have an uncertain ending.Stempniak joined his eighth team in 11 seasons in October, becoming one of the best bargains in the league after inking a one-year, $850,000 deal following a professional tryout with the New Jersey Devils. The veteran forward, who turned 33 years old Thursday, is currently tied with Michael Cammalleri for the team lead with 38 points in 51 games. His impressive numbers and cheap contract might make him one of the most sought-after players ahead of the Feb. 29 trade deadline. It's important to note that the Devils are nowhere near a decision on trading Stempniak. They trail the New York Islanders by one point for third spot in the Metropolitan Division, and sit right behind the Pittsburgh Penguins in the wild-card race. Should they fall from their position, though, general manager Ray Shero would certainly be enticed by the many suitors for his leading scorer.Stempniak says he isn't fazed by the uncertain yet familiar position he's in."You never know what is going to happen," he told Rich Chere of NJ.com on Wednesday. "Last year in New York, I was traded and they ended up winning the Presidents' Trophy. Things happen and they're sort of out of my control. I really hadn't thought about this at all until I was asked the last two days. So it's not weighing on my mind very much."He concedes he would prefer to remain in New Jersey if possible, but says the decision is beyond his control."I would like to stay, but I have no idea what's going to happen," Stempniak said. "A lot can happen in the standings over the next month and you never know what direction Ray is going to take with the team."One way or another, he should find himself mired in a playoff race over the last two-and-a-half months of the regular season.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Therrien 'very aware' it will be difficult for Canadiens to make playoffs
Reality is beginning to set in for the Montreal Canadiens. With only 30 dates remaining on the regular-season schedule and a record of 5-20-1 in their past 26 games - including Wednesday's loss to the Buffalo Sabres - head coach Michel Therrien acknowledges his team faces an uphill battle, and one they likely won't win.
Report: Majority of GMs would approve of play-in game for final playoff seeds
First the coach's challenge, now a wild-card play-in game?Bob McKenzie reported Wednesday on NBC that 16-of-28 general managers polled would be in favor of the NHL borrowing another idea, and adopting an MLB-style single elimination play-in game to determine the final wild-card seed in each conference. It's nothing more than a concept, obviously, something that would have to be presented to the league, scrutinized, and eventually voted on. However, according to McKenzie's survey, expanding the grueling two-month playoffs is an idea most GMs would already green light. He notes that of the 11 executives that voted against the single-elimination format, five did so because they actually preferred a best-of-three series to determine all four wild-card spots. For this to happen down the line, the league must convince the NHLPA, which is actively campaigning to earn the players more in-season rest.- with h/t Pro Hockey TalkCopyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. "Second in goals, but first in scoring."His team, the Kenora Kings, went undefeated with the All-Star playing on the blue line. Though opposing teams certainly won't miss him dominating the league with seven-goal performances, his teammates were understandably upset to see him head to Washington."I got a couple text messages saying it's just not going to be the same," Richards said. "My D partner was a little rattled, but they'll get over it."Now with his new team, Richards admitted the locker-room atmospheres aren't so different after all between Washington and Kenora."To be honest, it's a similar atmosphere, but with superstars," Richards said. After getting All-Star Weekend to rest up for the stretch run of the NHL season, Sidney Crosby picked up right where he left off after a red-hot January. The Pittsburgh Penguins captain picked up an assist on a Kris Letang goal in the first period to extend his point streak to eight games, but after his team found itself down 4-3 to the Ottawa Senators in the second, the 28-year-old took over.Crosby snapped a shot past Craig Anderson on the power play to tie the game at four, giving him a goal in eight consecutive games at the Consol Energy Center.(Courtesy: NHL.com)He scored again 10 minutes later off a beautiful saucer pass from Phil Kessel to give his team a 5-4 lead. It's only Crosby's second three-point night of the season, with the first coming in October against the Florida Panthers.

Can Connor McDavid still win the Calder?
At last.Tuesday night marks the return of teenage wonder Connor McDavid, who will once again grace the Edmonton Oilers lineup after requiring a 37-game absence to mend a fractured left clavicle. His derailed rookie season will always be a "what if?" But for now, and for the remaining 32 games, let's focus on another question pertaining to the 19-year-old phenom: Why not?McDavid still has time to campaign for, and perhaps still win, the Calder Trophy. Here's what he must do to make it happen:**It's an arbitrary benchmark, sure, but let's establish 50 points (or the threshold Artemi Panarin appears primed to clear sometime this week) as the minimum in building a strong enough case for consideration. For 50, McDavid needs 38 points in his 32 remaining games. That means he must score 1.19 points per outing throughout the final two-and-a-half months of the season, or a rate higher than any player this season save Patrick Kane.In other words, to have a chance to win the Calder - at least based on our arbitrary threshold - McDavid's output from here on out must be at an Art Ross pace. His point-per-game production, which he'll pick up at a greater clip than Panarin's, should carry weight. But even with 50, McDavid would finish with fewer points than any top rookie in a non-lockout season over the last decade. He needs 41 points - 1.28 per game - down the stretch to exceed Gabriel Landeskog's trophy-winning total in 2011-12.There is perhaps another route to Las Vegas.Minus two weeks at the start of December, the Oilers have been spinning their wheels, toiling at the bottom of the lowly Pacific Division all over again.Making up 33 points to win the rookie scoring title is out of the question if Panarin stays healthy, even for a talent like McDavid, but leading the Oil into the postseason isn't quite out of the realm of possibility. If he galvanizes his teammates to the point that they make a four-spot leap in the division standings, you could certainly make the argument that despite scoring disparity, McDavid's value is greater than that of the complementary attacking piece the 24-year-old Chicago Blackhawks winger has been all season.Dylan Larkin, Max Domi, Jack Eichel, and Shayne Gostisbehere will have their say, but if McDavid rescues the Oilers from the Western Conference gutter and brings playoff hockey to Edmonton for the first time in a decade, he'll fly all-expenses paid in June.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc.
