Wild's Haula: 'We weren't good enough to win' against Stars
Good, but not good enough. The Minnesota Wild took the Dallas Stars to overtime on Tuesday, but couldn't collect the win, dropping their sixth straight 4-3.The loss followed an all-too-familiar theme, as the team once again failed to give a complete 60-minute effort."We got to play a good 60 minutes, 65 minutes, to win in this league and we're not doing that right now," captain Mikko Koivu said following the game."We weren't good enough to win the game," Erik Haula told reporters. "We didn't win the game, so we weren't good enough."Related - VIDEO: Haula goal gives Wild reason to celebrateWhile his players sang a sour tune, head coach Mike Yeo remained positive, suggesting the team needs to do the simple things to climb their way out of their hole."It's very easy right now to find negatives, but nothing easy is going to get us out of this," Yeo said. "We have to stay aggressive, get on our toes, and keep pushing.""I put a quote on the board," he continued. "'Tough times they don't last, but tough people do.' And that's what we have to do right now."Despite the loss, the Wild remain in contention, sitting just a win behind the Colorado Avalanche and Nashville Predators for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Phaneuf deal promises more patchwork, not prosperity for Leafs
Pain, prolonged. The Toronto Maple Leafs slipped out from under another long-term contract commitment Monday, shipping Dion Phaneuf to the provincial rival Ottawa Senators in a truly stunning, and potentially symbiotic nine-player deal. And also one that proves that this regime won't cut a corner in its attempt to resuscitate the franchise.Phaneuf has been a consummate professional since Mike Babcock's arrival, acting, as a captain should, as an extension of his coach. He appeared to truly embrace and be successful in this disciple role, eager to shelter and shepherd the young players on the roster in this transitory phase in Leafs history. But a good soldier isn't enough in the NHL - not at $7 million per. Because while it may have appeared as though Phaneuf's insulating role was important for the growth and development of Morgan Rielly, Jake Gardiner, and the future for the Maple Leafs, his head was to be chopped at first chance to shed the $35 million left on his contract. For Maple Leafs fans and the like, his departure is viewed as a coup - some comparing it to the David Clarkson Houdini act last season. And to some extent it is. Phaneuf, 30, will always perform below the standard his contract has set, is certainly on the downturn of his career, and won't cost another penny to the Leafs. But for fans who've grown tired of an inferior product, his exit, and the pieces acquired in return, doesn't offer nourishment. Not now, and not for next season.Toronto's lineup for the Calgary Flames is only the start of what Maple Leafs fans must endure for the final 10 weeks of the season. But with Jared Cowen, Colin Greening, and Milan Michalek taken back in the Phaneuf deal, there's no promise it won't be more patchwork. The three are, at best, talk-up, build-up assets - much in the same of the glut of middle-six and bottom-pairing defensemen currently making up the Leafs' roster - and were problems that will actually combine to earn $4 million more than Phaneuf next season. The dollars don't mean much to the Leafs, but employing these three does mean the misfits won't move out until the summer of 2017, when these deals synchronously expire. Until this turnover completes, and even with an Auston Matthews potentially joining a William Nylander, this team simply will not have enough talent to turn the corner.Patience, though, should pay off. With Phaneuf's freight off the books (making $19 million annually between him, Clarkson, and Kessel), and Gardiner now holding down the longest single-player commitment on the Leafs' payroll, the team is going to have millions upon millions to spend in free agency and in the trade market over the next five seasons. And of course, the wherewithal to throw max dollars at Steven Stamkos. It's easy to circle back to the Tampa Bay Lightning star, who, still without an extension, is inching closer and closer to unrestricted free agency. But other than being able to keep a "C" on his sweater, what would entice him to leave a Stanley Cup contender to join a team chalk full of fringe NHL players?Trading Phaneuf isn't the first move, but one of the final strokes for the Maple Leafs in pressing reset. And while they won't have trouble finding players to pay millions to wear their uniform, a bare cupboard, and a promise of things to come, might not be the most attractive destination for the utmost of elite.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. 4 players who could become next Maple Leafs captain
With the Toronto Maple Leafs trading captain Dion Phaneuf to the Ottawa Senators in a nine-player deal on Tuesday, the opportunity has arisen for someone new to take his place wearing the "C" for the historic franchise going forward.Although general manager Lou Lamoriello said the Maple Leafs won't have a captain the rest of this season, there are a number of suitable candidates in the current Maple Leafs locker room - as well as another potentially on the horizon - who could take over the role next year. Here are four players who could become the 19th captain in the franchise's history:James van RiemsdykOne of the most productive players on the team since being acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers for Luke Schenn in 2012, Van Riemsdyk brings the tireless effort, competitive drive, and energetic spirit that a captain should portray. He's currently one of the longest-tenured players in Toronto's locker room, and is signed through the 2017-18 season.Nazem KadriThe 25-year-old has never played for another franchise during his six-year career, and has won over head coach Mike Babcock for being "a way better player" than he expected.Kadri's also a local product: He was born in nearby London, Ontario, and played his junior hockey with the Kitchener Rangers and London Knights. Given his age, Kadri still has the potential and ability to be one of the Maple Leafs' top forwards.Morgan RiellyThe 21-year-old Rielly may be young, but his decision-making skills and calm demeanor both on and off the ice show a maturity most young men his age fail to possess. These attributes - which will only develop further as he spends more time in the pros - scream captain. If the Maple Leafs continue to envision him as a key member of the franchise's future, why not show him some extra faith by handing him the "C?"Steven StamkosThe biggest unrestricted free agent of the offseason is widely expected to be a major target of the Maple Leafs come July 1. With the team now in a good position to potentially rope the 26-year-old sniper into coming back to his hometown, buttering their offer up by adding the extra incentive of being captain only makes sense. No one addition could change a franchise more than Stamkos this offseason, and if the Maple Leafs intend to land the two-time 50-goal scorer, offering him the role - which he's held with the Tampa Bay Lightning since 2014 - almost seems like a must.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lamoriello: Phaneuf trade 'not a transaction for today'
The Toronto Maple Leafs are sticking to the plan and looking ahead. That was the impetus behind sending captain Dion Phaneuf to the Ottawa Senators in a nine-player trade, as explained by general manager Lou Lamoriello on Tuesday."This was a transaction that wasn't for today," he admitted. "Dion will certainly leave a hole in our lineup."
Senators GM: 'We don't expect Phaneuf to be a savior'
The goal is the playoffs, but the Ottawa Senators will not be relying solely on new acquisition Dion Phaneuf to get there, according to general manager Bryan Murray.Addressing the media after pulling off a nine-player deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs that brought Phaneuf to Canada's capital, Murray said the three-time All-Star gives his team security on the back end, as well as added leadership in the dressing room.At the same time, Murray cautioned, Phaneuf is expected to be but one piece of the puzzle."We don't expect him to be a savior," Murray said of Phaneuf. "We expect him to be the good solid player he is."With his team four points out of a wild-card spot, Murray knows there's no quick fix.
Fantasy Fallout: Dion Phaneuf's Value Should Grow in Ottawa
Here are the fantasy-related consequences of defenseman Dion Phaneuf heading to the Ottawa Senators in a nine-player blockbuster with Toronto:Daily FantasyOf all the players moved, the much-maligned Phaneuf is easily the most fantasy relevant. Though the rebuilding Leafs have struggled to score this season, ranking 27th with just 2.29 goals per game, Phaneuf led the team's defensemen in scoring, with three goals and 21 assists in 51 games. As a mid-priced player on most DFS sites, he provided a solid floor by averaging 2.28 shots and 1.22 blocks per game. He should continue to be productive as part of the Senators' second pairing alongside Cody Ceci. Use him in all formats until his salary catches up with his expected value growth.21-year-old Morgan Rielly would seemingly be in line to feature as the Leafs' power-play quarterback, given that his five goals and 18 assists rank just behind Phaneuf's total output. His shot and block averages are similar as well, and could benefit from a higher-profile role. Still, Rielly likely has more value in season-long leagues due to Toronto's inconsistent game-to-game offense. As the Leafs deal with injuries to forwards Tyler Bozak, Joffrey Lupul and Shawn Matthias, new arrivals Colin Greening and Milan Michalek, while bit players in Ottawa, could have some daily fantasy relevance in Toronto as budget options.Michalek has six goals and four assists in 32 games this season; in 2014-15, he had 13 goals and 21 assists in 66 games. His days of being a reliable 20-goal scorer are likely over, but injuries may afford him a greater role in Toronto's lineup out of necessity. Don't be afraid to pounce in tournament play if Michalek ends up on one of the top two lines.Greening had played in just one NHL game this season, and has failed to live up to his 2011-12 campaign, in which he put up 17 goals and 20 assists in 82 games. Since then, he's had just 37 points in 150 games, spread across four seasons. Unless he's given a top-six role, he won't be a viable DFS option, though he's likely to be priced at the minimum level, if nothing else.Cowen, a 2009 first-round pick, has just four assists in 37 games this season. Having never registered more than 17 points in a single season, he, like Greening, isn't a viable fantasy option unless he's handed an unexpectedly heavy workload. His most relevant DFS asset is his 1.6 blocks per game.Redraft Fantasy LeaguesOwners who have stuck with Phaneuf this season have to be thrilled with his move to the free-flowing Senators, who average 2.83 goals per game, fifth-most in the NHL.While the ex-Leaf was likely acquired to help shore up a defense that allows the most shots and third-most goals, his offensive production could receive a boost if occasionally paired with Erik Karlsson, whose 59 points tie him for second place in NHL scoring, at either even-strength or on the power play.Rielly owners should also benefit from what should be a bigger special teams role for the young Leaf. He'll be a popular fantasy trade target, though you're taking a risk if you're in a league that counts plus-minus.Michalek owners, though there aren't likely to be many of them, should be pleased to see him in a position to potentially receive a bigger role. Monitor his role and make a claim if the potential for a top-six role surfaces. It's unlikely that Cowen, Greening or any of the other lesser names involved in the trade were owned in any standard leagues; they shouldn't be immediately picked up.Waiver Wire Targets
