The Los Angeles Kings certainly made a splash when they acquired forward Vincent Lecavalier and defenseman Luke Schenn from the Philadelphia Flyers in January. And it appears as though they aren't done trying to upgrade their contenting roster ahead of the trade deadline on Feb. 29.The Pacific Division-leading Kings are looking to enhance their defense through the rental market, Bob McKenzie reported on TSN's "Insider Trading" segment Thursday."Los Angeles clearly wants an upgrade on the blue line and they're going to look at their rental possibilities," McKenzie said. "Dan Hamhuis from the Vancouver Canucks would be one of those, Kris Russell from the Calgary Flames would be another one of those."McKenzie notes that one problem the Kings are facing - as well as other teams looking to upgrade their blue line right now - is that the aforementioned players are "technically" not yet on the market."I wouldn't be surprised if Russell goes on the market, but he and the Flames are still on a little bit of limbo in terms of whether he's going to sign, or whether he's going to become available," McKenzie said. "As for Hamhuis, full no trade clause in his contract. It will probably be at least another 10 days before the Canucks decide which way they want to go on Hamhuis, and that's assuming he wants to waive."Los Angeles cleared cap space Thursday, assigning defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to the AHL's Ontario Reign after he cleared waivers. All rookies are subject to ridicule. Superb goaltending hasn't necessarily been the Detroit Red Wings' hallmark.Decades of fixed slotting in the NHL's postseason bracket isn't accomplished without crease contributions rungs above competence, of course. But looking back on all those 100-point seasons, and the Stanley Cups, Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Nicklas Lidstrom, Sergei Fedorov, Pavel Datsyuk, and the like come to mind before Chris Osgood, Dominik Hasek, and Mike Vernon. What might serve as the franchise's stamp is adaptation. So in an era where the loss of an elite netminder can transform a contender to a lottery entry, and in a season in which Detroit is chasing a 25th consecutive playoff appearance, it's no surprise to see a bona fide Vezina Trophy candidate surface in the Red Wings' blue paint.Twenty-three-year-old Petr Mrazek is that goalie. And with about just an aggregated season as a starter to his credit, he's reached the top of his class. After making 22 saves Wednesday in a win over the Senators, Mrazek (unsurprisingly a late-round NHL draft pick) now leads the league in even-strength save percentage across the last two seasons.GoalieSv.%Petr Mrazek0.943Carey Price0.942Steve Mason0.942Cory Schneider0.937Henrik Lundqvist0.936Spreading his WingsMrazek won an open competition with Jimmy Howard in the latter portion of last season after his counterpart, who earned an All-Star selection with squeaky-clean first-half numbers, returned from a groin injury. In split duties, Mrazek earned the right to make postseason starts under Mike Babcock in part of his own volition, but perhaps more so because Howard's game came unraveled. There, Mrazek went denial-for-denial with Ben Bishop, supporting Babcock's hunch, and almost led the Red Wings to a first-round upset of the Eastern Conference champion Tampa Bay Lightning. He posted two shutouts in the series, and stopped pucks at a rate greater than he had throughout the regular season, but was ultimately outdueled in a Game 7 that left no margin for error. He returned to another competition in the fall, once again triumphing over Howard. And despite the franchise's resistance to label him the unequivocal No. 1 (perhaps smartly and strategically), even now, he's not just the best in Detroit, but one of the very best in the game.Check out his progression in chunks, beginning with his increased role after Howard's injury last season, and cleaving his first year as a full-time starter - in which he leads the league in both major standard goaltender categories - at the holiday break.ChunkGamesWinsSV.%Shutouts2014-1520110.91932015-16a20100.92512015-16b17110.9453Braden Holtby, who has as many wins as Mrazek has starts, is the clear front-runner for top goaltending honors despite trailing the Red Wings' starter in save percentage, goals-against average, and shutouts. And with veterans Corey Crawford, Roberto Luongo, and Cory Schneider also having banner campaigns, Mrazek may be still get overlooked. But if he continues to make gains, and rides this brilliant trajectory down the stretch, he'll not only secure to an incredible quarter century of consecutive playoff berths in Detroit, but have a chance to perhaps become the first Red Wings goalie in 61 years to capture the Vezina Trophy.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. After a Jan. 6 trade from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Los Angeles Kings, veteran forward Vincent Lecavalier agreed to retire at season's end in order to ensure one last run at a second career Stanley Cup."It wasn't hard at all to decide," Lecavalier said, per Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. "Not at all. It's something I've been thinking about, even before that, it's not something that was because of the trade. But when it was obviously part of it, I didn't hesitate. I would have been in Philly and not played the rest of the year. For me to get an opportunity like this, it was a no-brainer."After watching last year's final from sports bars in his former home of Tampa Bay, the 35-year-old is hoping to return to the city once again in June - but this time on the ice."That'd be great," he said. "I've already gotten a few texts from people, not players, but trainers in Tampa. It would be a lot of fun for sure. You never know."Picked first overall by the Lightning in 1998, Lecavalier spent 14 seasons in Tampa, winning a Stanley Cup in 2004. The Quebec native also took home the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy in 2007, and still holds the franchise record with 383 goals. Now in California, Lecavalier looks rejuvenated after taking the ice just seven times this season with the Flyers. He already has eight points in 13 games with his new team, and has seen regular power-play time despite being expected to fill a bottom-six role. While the Kings have spent most of their season atop the Pacific Division, the Lightning - after a slow start - have won 11 of 15 games and sit third in the Atlantic Division, as they look to make another deep playoff run.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley believes Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, and Lance Bouma have learned their lesson.Hartley benched the trio of players against the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday after the three reportedly showed up late to practice on Monday.Despite sitting his two leading scorers, Hartley doesn't feel the move was that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things."I know some people say, '(Those are our) top two scorers' ... but when you make a mistake, you have to be accountable," Hartley said, according to Kristen Odland of Postmedia."It was tough because you can't find three better young men," said Hartley. "They made a mistake, they paid for it."They didn't rob a bank. They made a mistake. And this is the last time we'll address it," Hartley added.Hartley's comments would suggest the trio will be back in action when the Flames take on the San Jose Sharks Thursday.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc.
