Ravens' Dobbins to make long-awaited return vs. Patriots
Running back J.K. Dobbins is active and set to make his season debut Sunday when the Baltimore Ravens play the New England Patriots, the team announced. The 23-year-old tailback was inactive for the first two weeks of this season and missed the entire 2021 campaign after sustaining significant knee and hamstring injuries in a preseason game.Dobbins fully participated in practices ahead of the Ravens' first two contests before being inactive for each matchup.Baltimore expects the Ohio State product to bolster a rushing attack that's attempting to take the burden off quarterback Lamar Jackson's legs. Veteran Kenyan Drake has started at halfback to begin the 2022 campaign.Dobbins ran for 805 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging 6 yards per carry as a rookie in 2020. The former second-round pick added 18 receptions for 120 yards in his debut season. The Ravens are still awaiting the return of fellow tailback Gus Edwards, who will miss at least the first four games of the season after being placed on injured reserve. Offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley, who's also working his way back from injury, was ruled out for Sunday's game.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Kamara, Winston active vs. Panthers
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara and quarterback Jameis Winston are active for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, the team announced.Kamara missed last week's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a rib injury and was listed as questionable for Week 3.The running back struggled in the season-opening win over the Atlanta Falcons, producing just 39 rushing yards and seven receiving yards. The 27-year-old rushed for 898 yards and four touchdowns in 13 appearances last season. He missed four games due to a knee injury.Winston was listed as questionable Friday due to back and ankle injuries. The 28-year-old reportedly played against the Buccaneers with four fractures in his back.Meanwhile, New Orleans tight end Taysom Hill is inactive for Week 3 with a rib injury.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Garoppolo's offseason surgery scuttled Commanders trade
The Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers had the outline of a trade agreement involving Jimmy Garoppolo in place at the NFL combine in February, but the deal fell apart once the 49ers quarterback decided to undergo shoulder surgery, sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN.The trade reportedly would've involved multiple draft picks. Garoppolo had surgery in March and didn't resume throwing until July. The 49ers and Garoppolo had decided to part ways in the offseason after the team named second-year passer Trey Lance the starter. Other clubs were also linked to Garoppolo in the flurry of quarterback movement at the start of free agency, including the Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Panthers, and Seattle Seahawks. The Commanders, who struggled under center in 2021, ended up acquiring quarterback Carson Wentz from the Colts, who later pulled the trigger on a trade of their own to land former Atlanta Falcons star Matt Ryan. Washington gave up a second- and third-round pick in 2022, along with a conditional 2023 third-rounder, in exchange for Wentz and second- and seventh-round selections in 2022.Garoppolo eventually agreed to stay with the 49ers on a restructured one-year deal. The 30-year-old began the 2022 campaign as the backup but was named QB1 again last week after Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.Garoppolo has posted a 35-16 record - including the playoffs - since joining San Francisco in 2017.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Lattimore, Fournette docked $13K for skirmish; Brady avoids fine
The NFL fined New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore and Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette $13,367 each for unnecessary roughness in the Week 2 skirmish between the clubs, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.Tom Brady wasn't fined for his role in the incident, Pelissero adds. All three players were involved in the Week 2 scuffle that resulted in Lattimore and Bucs receiver Mike Evans being ejected. Evans received a one-game suspension, which was upheld after an appeal. The wideout will miss the club's upcoming contest against the Green Bay Packers as a result.
NFL Week 3 player props: Plus-money plays the order of the day
We exorcised our Travis Etienne prop demons last week, but a 5-5 Sunday left many confused by Kyle Pitts' lack of usage and frustrated by whatever it was the Browns were doing defensively when Joe Flacco beat them deep late. Luckily, Kyler Murray saved the day with a fourth-down scamper. At 12-8 (+3.9 units) overall, we'll keep building on a decent start to the season.Travis Etienne over 2.5 receptions (+115)Speaking of Etienne, why not go back to the well? His yardage total can be had in the marketplace at 16.5, but with a plus-money price on over 2.5 catches, that's the play I'll make. The Chargers gave up two sizable receptions against the Raiders in Week 1 and six catches on six targets to Chiefs tailbacks in Week 2. Etienne should get at least four targets. If he can catch 75% of them, it won't matter how far he runs or if he fumbles.Mac Jones over 1.5 passing touchdowns (+105)Passing touchdowns are the toughest to project week-to-week. A quarterback can dominate in the passing game only to hand the ball off near the goal line. However, Jones' median expectation is 243.5 yards, which is a little too high for an over but suggests he'll be able to do damage through the air. If that's the case, with another plus-money payout, we'll back Jones to find pay dirt in the best setup for his success so far this season.Tyreek Hill over 6.5 receptions (+110)Maybe I'm missing something, but Hill has been targeted a dozen or more times in the first two games this season. With numerous members of the Bills secondary out for Sunday's game, who's stopping him? The Dolphins have a much better chance to move the ball through the air, and they'll be tasked with keeping up with Buffalo's offense. Even if that means short throws to Hill, that'll only help our cause.Garrett Wilson over 45.5 receiving yards (-110)Maybe it's the uniform, but we're all sleeping on what the Jets do offensively - they throw a ton. If I was younger and hipper, I'd suggest that Garrett Wilson might be Him. He showed elusiveness in Week 1 on eight targets before catching eight balls on 14 targets the next week. There's no reason to believe Joe Flacco won't have to throw 40-50 times again, and he's looking at Wilson more and more.Dameon Pierce over 60.5 rush yards (-110)The Texans have had to run against the Colts and Broncos in their first two games, which has jammed up what Lovie Smith and Co. want to do offensively. The Bears have given up 5.1 yards per carry in the first two games, and we watched the Packers run through them comfortably on Sunday Night Football. Pierce should be in line for at least another 15 carries in a winnable game that could see him on close-out duty late. Anything better than four yards per carry with that volume would push him over.Patrick Mahomes over 10.5 rush yards (-110)Mahomes has just five carries for four yards through two games. I'd argue he didn't need his usual scrambling magic in a blowout of the Cardinals, and the Chargers did a nice job containing him. This week, Mahomes has to go to a loud environment where communication with his new receiving corps will be tougher and the offensive line will be a half-step slow. He'll need to scramble.Derrick Henry under 81.5 rushing yards (-110)Henry isn't what he used to be. While this yardage total isn't 100-plus, it might not be adjusted enough. We'll keep testing the floor on Henry, who's running behind an offensive line that's not what it was in his prime, either.Curtis Samuel over 46.5 receiving yards (-110)Samuel's only season of 100-plus targets came in 2019 when Commanders offensive coordinator Scott Turner was on Ron Rivera's staff in Carolina. After missing almost all of 2021, Samuel is now healthy and tied with Terry McLaurin for the most receiving yards on the team. He also has nine more receptions and eight more targets than McLaurin. Yet Samuel is lined well under his teammate.Tyler Allgeier over 33.5 rushing yards (-110)The rookie out of BYU missed the season opener but was given 10 carries in his NFL debut last week while the Falcons played from behind. The Seahawks' run defense has been gashed by a pair of Broncos and Jeff Wilson. Cordarrelle Patterson should have a big game, but he's not a 20-plus carry workhorse. Allgeier is taking over Mike Davis' role from 2021, where he had just 15 fewer carries than Patterson.Leonard Fournette over 71.5 rushing yards (-110)Unlike Patterson, Fournette is a workhorse tailback. The Buccaneers will lean on him this week against Green Bay after the Bears ran for 8.42 yards per carry versus the Packers in Week 2. Fournette has recorded 21 and 25 carries so far this season, but he might be up for more with a depleted Bucs receiving corps.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Bills' Hyde to miss remainder of season with neck injury
Buffalo Bills safety Micah Hyde will be placed on injured reserve due to a season-ending neck injury, according to his agent, Jack Bechta.Hyde suffered the injury during the Bills' 41-7 blowout victory over the Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football. Buffalo already ruled him out for the team's Week 3 contest against the Miami Dolphins. The 31-year-old is expected to make a full recovery for the 2023 campaign, his agent adds.Hyde and teammate Jordan Poyer have formed the backend of the Bills' secondary for the past six seasons after they both joined the team in 2017.A one-time Pro Bowler, Hyde has made 81 starts for the franchise, recording 14 interceptions and 363 tackles. He tied his career high in interceptions last season with five. The loss of Hyde is the latest hit to a banged-up Bills secondary. The team has been without star cornerback Tre'Davious White, who remains on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from a torn ACL. Corner Dane Jackson will also miss Week 3 due to a neck injury. The Bills head to Miami on Sunday with a 2-0 record.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Shanahan: Garoppolo 'one of the better throwers on this planet'
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan still has the utmost confidence in Jimmy Garoppolo. The veteran quarterback will make his first start of the campaign against the Denver Broncos on Sunday after Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury last week, and Shanahan is impressed with how Garoppolo has looked in the lead-up."I think Jimmy is one of the better throwers on this planet," Shanahan said.Garoppolo started in 15 contests last season, throwing for 3,810 yards and 20 touchdowns. The 49ers finished with a 10-7 record, losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game."I thought Jimmy had his best year last year," Shanahan said. "He got surgery at the end of the year, and once his arm started healing up, throwing on the side and stuff, it always looked good."He added, "All you had to do was see him throw it once and watch how it spun, watch the zip it came off with, how he looked when he threw it. And he's always been that way."Garoppolo filled in for Lance late in the first quarter of Week 2, leading the 49ers to a win over the Seattle Seahawks. He finished with 13 completions for 154 yards and one touchdown. The 30-year-old Garoppolo has made 45 starts during his six-year tenure in San Francisco.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Chargers' Herbert, Allen questionable vs. Jaguars
Quarterback Justin Herbert and wide receiver Keenan Allen are listed as questionable for the Los Angeles Chargers' Week 3 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.Herbert sustained a fracture to his rib cartilage in the team's 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last Thursday. He finished the game throwing for 334 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. The 2021 Pro Bowl passer isn't sure if he'll play Sunday. "That decision will be made Sunday," he said, according to Fernando Ramirez of the Sporting Tribune.Herbert insisted his ribs feel good despite not practicing Friday. He was a limited participant in Wednesday's and Thursday's sessions.Head coach Brandon Staley said backup Chase Daniel will start if Herbert is inactive Sunday, according to Jeff Miller of the Los Angeles Times.Allen left the season opener after sustaining a hamstring injury. Staley said the five-time Pro Bowl wideout has a "50-50" chance of playing, per Ramirez. The Chargers listed cornerback J.C. Jackson and center Corey Linsley as doubtful for their matchup against Jacksonville.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
McCarthy downplays Jones' QB competition quote: 'Dak is our starter'
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy isn't entertaining the idea of a battle at quarterback between Dak Prescott and backup Cooper Rush."I'm just trying to say this with a straight face," McCarthy said Friday, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. "Like anything, you look at the whole thing, it's about winning. That's all we really care about. There is no quarterback controversy. ... Dak is our starter."Owner and general manager Jerry Jones fuelled speculation on Thursday when he said he hoped Rush would play well enough to force the club to make a tough decision when Prescott returned from injury."I think you need to be able to decipher between 'GM Jerry' and 'Owner Jerry,'" McCarthy added.Rush took Jones' comments in stride after having a good laugh about them with Prescott."I think he just wants to win games, and that's what we all want to do," he said.Prescott is currently rehabbing a thumb ailment that was initially projected to keep him out of action anywhere from four-to-six weeks. The two-time Pro Bowl passer has progressed to on-field rehab as he begins to ramp up activities during his recovery.Jones is optimistic that Prescott could return to the Cowboys' lineup Oct. 2 against the Washington Commanders. Meanwhile, Prescott is scheduled to have the stitches from his surgery removed on Monday, according to The Dallas Morning News' David Moore.Rush has taken over the starting duties under center for the Cowboys. The 28-year-old improved to 2-0 as a starter after leading Dallas to a 20-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week. He finished the contest passing for 235 yards and one touchdown while completing 19 of 31 attempts for a 61% completion rate.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. 49ers' Kittle set to make season debut vs. Broncos
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle is eligible to make his season debut Sunday against the Denver Broncos after missing the opening two games with a groin injury.Kittle is off the injury report for Sunday's game after being listed as questionable the previous two weeks."He's good to go," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. The 28-year-old suffered the injury during practice in early September. The 49ers didn't want to take any unnecessary risks with Kittle early in the season.Kittle finished the 2021 season with 910 yards on 71 catches and six touchdowns.49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will make his first start of the campaign after filling in last week for Trey Lance, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 3 best bets: Spread, moneyline, total, and teaser
The only thing we can expect from Week 3 is that the NFL's razor-thin margins will continue to leave almost every bet in the balance. Thursday night's late touchdown in Cleveland showed what can happen when a team repeatedly kicks itself out of any chance of winning. The final score can fall any which way, so getting the best of the number is the only way to give yourself a long-term edge.Part of becoming a better bettor is tracking your results to figure out what type of bet is working for you over a considerable sample size.BET TYPELAST WEEKSEASON (units)ATS trio1-2 (-1.2)4-2 (+1.8)ML upset+1.91-1 (+0.9)Totals-1.10-2 (-2.2)Teasers+11-1 (-0.2)SEASON +/-+0.6+0.3Of course, we're too early in the season to glean anything from on- or off-field statistics, but we'll try our best to carry over our success against the spread from the round-robin moneyline parlay plays with minimal overlap on the bets.Best bets ATSVikings -6This is the place for our top favorite bet of the week. Here, the line moving under a full touchdown is too much of an adjustment given the Lions haven't played a road game yet.The Vikings can be excused for running into a prime-time buzzsaw in Philadelphia as Kirk Cousins returns to more comfortable confines. Minnesota shows more of its revamped offense and Dalvin Cook has a big day as the Lions can't keep up. If we were still alive in survivor, this is where we'd risk it all.Buccaneers -1Speaking of risking it all, Tom Brady is getting discounted after the Buccaneers opened as 3-point favorites only to see the Packers take money. Grabbing the full field goal is understandable, but the low total suggests this game will be more about running the football and defense. That sounds strange given that Aaron Rodgers is on the other side from Brady. But the Bucs' offensive line issues can be masked in the run game the same way the Bears were able to bully Green Bay. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay's run defense won't be trampled like Chicago's was last Sunday.Broncos +2We know what we're getting with Jimmy Garoppolo. Since when is betting on Jimmy G as a road favorite against a good pass rush a reliable bet? Someone thinks it is since the favorite has flipped after another week of Nathaniel Hackett mockery.Neither of these teams has built an impressive resume this season, and Kyle Shanahan's decision-making hasn't been historically solid, either. The Broncos ride a better mile-high environment Sunday night to something of a statement win.Moneyline upset of the weekOur defined parameter for this section is underdogs paying at least +150.Colts (+200)The Colts were the last cut from our round-robin underdog moneyline parlay, which might have been a mistake after the Steelers could only cash first-half moneyline tickets Thursday night. It looks like Matt Ryan will have his two biggest wide receiver targets back for Indy's first home game this season. Michael Pittman, who made nine catches for 121 yards in Week 1, can play the role the Chargers' Mike Williams did against the Chiefs last week.Defensively, maybe the Colts can use their game plan from 2020 where they held Kansas City to 13 points at Arrowhead Stadium. A returning Shaquille Leonard - who practiced this week - would help. It's possible the Chiefs have their best game of the early season ready for Indianapolis, but the market has overreacted to their win against the banged-up Cardinals and an escape act against Los Angeles.Best total betRavens / Patriots over 44.5This comes down to believing the Ravens' offense will be its usual explosive self while the defense will continue to have communication issues. Mac Jones hasn't been lighting it up, but look for the Patriots to open things up in their home opener. With a total in the mid-40s, each team can get into the 20s comfortably in a close game. If the short spread isn't in play late, it's because one team ran away from the other.Best 6-point teaserTexans +8.5 / Titans +8With a total under 40, I'll dare the Bears to win a game comfortably despite not being sure they're the better team. The Raiders have a better chance of winning big in Tennessee, but I have a hunch that the Titans will give a desperation-level effort that's been their calling card in the Mike Vrabel era. Does that mean a win? Maybe not, but the Raiders couldn't close last week against a club that was pronounced dead before Week 2.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Schultz: The Titans are in trouble if Tannehill's bubble has burst
Is there a more disappointing team to begin the NFL season than the Tennessee Titans? It's not just the 0-2 start - which is bad enough for the reigning No. 1 seed in the AFC - but rather the offense, or lack thereof. The Titans rank 27th in total offense (273 yards per game) and 28th in scoring (13.5 points per game). A porous line hasn't helped, but the main culprit is quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who's completed 58.5% of his passes for a measly 383 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions - including a pick-6 on Monday against Buffalo."I don't think I'm making a crazy declaration by saying the quarterback is not good enough, but he's not," one scout tells theScore."He was never a franchise guy. Their play-calling is predictable, which won't change unless they start running the ball. Tannehill's a good athlete, but he doesn't move quite as well as he used to. That was always a way out for him, and now that he's not as effective with his legs, we are seeing his other deficiencies."We've also seen the effects of not having Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown, whom the Titans traded to the Eagles on draft night. Wesley Hitt / Getty ImagesJust look at what Brown's already done to elevate Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. Brown is dominant on 50-50 balls and an excellent third-down option. He can block, he can run after the catch - he can pretty much do everything. Through two games, he was tied for fifth in catches (15) and sixth in yards (224). PFF has given Brown an 87.2 grade, which is third among wide receivers behind Stefon Diggs and Cooper Kupp. It's no coincidence that Hurts is an early MVP front-runner while guiding the Eagles to a 2-0 start. The Titans also acquired former Rams standout Robert Woods, long regarded as one of the league's top route-runners even if he lacks Brown's physical tools. Woods, however, has just 52 yards on five catches and seven targets."Woods isn't A.J. Brown, but he's solid enough," the scout says. "They think (2022 first-round pick) Treylon Burks is going to be an A.J. Brown type of player, but Woods still has to be more involved."With an ineffective passing game, it's no wonder all-world running back Derrick Henry has yet to find his footing. Henry has amassed 101 yards in two games with an average of 3.1 yards per carry - shockingly low numbers for a player of his caliber. With Tannehill struggling, The King is seeing eight or more defenders in the box on an NFL-leading 30% of his runs.To be fair, Henry is coming off a foot fracture and is perhaps not yet fully healthy, but a loaded box will halt any great runner. In fact, 101 of his yards (96%) have come after contact, according to PFF. Joshua Bessex / Getty ImagesIt remains to be seen whether head coach Mike Vrabel will hand the keys to rookie Malik Willis, who got 19 minutes of playing time against the Bills on Monday. But the Titans need to at least consider what the rookie quarterback might provide. Willis, a third-round draft choice out of Liberty, has all the traits to become a dude in this league.Similar to Hurts, Willis is built like a Mack truck. His ability as both a runner and deep-ball thrower stems from an uncommonly powerful lower base."Really strong kid," an NFL head coach told me before the draft. "And if we needed a quarterback, I'd be more interested. … High-upside guy with a very strong arm and seems to work at it.""Upside" doesn't necessarily translate to immediate success. But Tannehill's current level of play is hardly doing the job. Perhaps Willis could be what the Titans need to right the ship and save their sinking season.Jordan Schultz is theScore's NFL insider and senior NBA analyst. Tomlin not considering QB or play-caller change: 'Definitively no'
The Pittsburgh Steelers fell to 1-2 with a loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, but head coach Mike Tomlin isn't pushing the panic button.Tomlin said postgame that he won't consider making a change at quarterback or who calls the offensive plays over the Steelers' extended break ahead of Week 4."I'm not in that mindset," said Tomlin. "I'm interested in reviewing this tape and looking at the totality of it and figuring out how we collectively get better. So the answer to that question is definitively no."Steelers quarterback Mitchell Trubisky put together another uneven performance, completing 20 of 32 passes for 207 yards and rushing for one touchdown. While Trubisky struggled, Pittsburgh's entire offense looked disjointed. The passing game dealt with multiple drops, and embattled offensive coordinator Matt Canada continued to stumble in putting together consistent drives.Tomlin will likely face increased calls to turn to first-round quarterback Kenny Pickett, who impressed in the preseason to earn Pittsburgh's backup job. The former Pitt standout threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns against zero interceptions while completing 80.1% of his passes. The Steelers face the New York Jets in Week 4 before their schedule ramps up with games against the Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, and Philadelphia Eagles.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Sean Payton open to coaching return in 'right situation'
Former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is leaving the door open to returning to the sideline in the near future."If the right situation presented itself, I would definitely be interested," Payton said during a recent interview on the "New Orleans.Football" podcast. "And there's no utopia, if you will, when it comes to teams, but if I felt like it was the right situation, I would have an interest in that."That all being said, that could come in a year, that could come in two years."Payton listed the opportunity to win consistently and a franchise's willingness to build the correct culture among the factors in his decision to return to coaching."The most important element is functional ownership (and) front office," he said. "There's a handful of teams that aren't, and those teams, regardless of what takes place, they can win on Sunday, but they have trouble winning long term."The former coach has two years remaining on his contract with the Saints, leaving any interested teams needing to compensate New Orleans to obtain Payton's services. The 57-year-old left the Saints in January after 16 seasons. The NFL punished the Miami Dolphins in August for having impermissible discussions with Payton's agent and Tom Brady. Following a tampering probe, the league docked the Dolphins two draft picks and fined and suspended owner Stephen Ross. Miami ultimately hired Mike McDaniel as its next head coach.Payton is currently working for Fox Sports. However, he said he experienced FOMO (fear of missing out) after Week 2's matchup between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Saints. The Super Bowl XLIV-winning coach also said his absence from the sideline has allowed him to recharge his batteries, similar to when he was suspended for a year as part of the Bountygate scandal.Payton led the Saints to a 152-89 record during his tenure at the helm.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jerry Jones: I'd welcome QB dilemma between Prescott, Rush
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would welcome a quarterback debate between unproven passer Cooper Rush and Dak Prescott."Wouldn't it be something if you had a dilemma as to which way you go?" Jerry said Thursday, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News."You do that if (Rush) gets 10 wins. Same thing that happened to Prescott (in 2016)."The Cowboys lost Prescott after he suffered a hand injury in the season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The two-time Pro Bowler is reportedly expected to miss four-to-six weeks.Rush made his second career start in Week 2. The fifth-year veteran passed for 235 yards and one touchdown against no interceptions, leading Dallas to a 20-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.Jones hopes Rush can remain consistent, starting with Monday night's matchup versus the New York Giants."Of course I would (want a QB controversy)," Jones said. "If (Rush) comes in here and plays as well as Prescott played (in 2016) over these next games ahead, I'd walk to New York to get that."While Jones said he hopes Prescott to return as soon as possible, he also praised Rush's potential."Do I think that it's possible for Rush to come in here and play at a level to win games the way Prescott did when he took over from (Tony) Romo? Yes, I do."An injury to then-starter Romo during the 2016 preseason gave Prescott a chance to start as a rookie. The fourth-round pick helped Dallas win 13 games that season and claimed the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Ravens signing veteran Pierre-Paul to reported 1-year deal
Jason Pierre-Paul is joining the Baltimore Ravens, the free-agent defensive end told CBS Sports' Josina Anderson. The former All-Pro pass-rusher will sign a one-year deal worth up to $5.5 million, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Pierre-Paul's signing comes after his second visit to the Ravens' facility since June. New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Thursday he's pleased that wide receiver Kenny Golladay is frustrated about his lack of playing time."I've been in the NFL a long time," Daboll said, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. "I don't know that I've ever been part of any team where someone's not happy about something. I have great respect for Kenny. I'm glad he's not happy he didn't play, that shows competitiveness."After playing only two offensive snaps Sunday, Golladay vented his frustration with his role on the team Wednesday, saying, "I came here to play." The 28-year-old was on the field for most of New York's snaps in the season opener but caught only two passes.Daboll is in his first season with the Giants. Golladay is in Year 2 with New York after signing a four-year, $72-million deal in the 2021 offseason when the NFC East club still employed head coach Joe Judge and general manager Dave Gettleman.Daboll said he's spoken to Golladay about the wideout's situation, according to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News. The one-time Pro Bowl receiver also said Wednesday he's confused about his lack of snaps because he's received praise from Daboll."I talk to all the guys all the time. I mean, I think it's a bigger thing than really it is," Daboll said, according to Ed Valentine of the Big Blue View. "We went with (David) Sills, KGs working hard, we'll see where it goes this week. And I have confidence in old guys. And we're getting ready for Dallas."Richie James leads New York with 10 catches and 110 yards this season. The 2-0 Giants host the 1-1 Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football in Week 3.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. TNF player props: Bear market for the Steelers and Browns?
Last season, we rock and rolled our way to the Super Bowl with music-themed Thursday Night Football player props, joyfully celebrating the start of a new NFL week. This year, we'll use an episode from "Must See TV" cornerstone "Seinfeld" each week to remind us that betting is supposed to be fun, even when an absurd series of events leads to a losing bet."You shrunk it. You know you shrunk it. Just tell me you shrunk it.""I shrunk it."Like the dry cleaner midway through "Seinfeld's" first season finale, Kevin Stefanski at least admitted what went wrong after an absurd series of events led to the Browns' loss to the Jets.

NFL Week 3 round-robin underdog moneyline parlay: Enjoy discomfort
You saw it: The Chargers were heading for a go-ahead touchdown, but a 99-yard pick-6 turned the game around despite L.A. looking like the better team. You saw it: After botching every high-leverage play, the Falcons (+450) came one end-zone throw away from taking a lead inside the two-minute warning. You saw it: Broncos fans booed their team as the Texans (+400) took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter.Had any of those games fallen a different way, we'd be celebrating our value-based gambit after the Cowboys and Cardinals came through. Thankfully, all five underdogs covered the spread, and at 9-1 ATS this season, no tears need to be shed over giving up one unit after we've had some close calls. How it worksWe parlay five underdogs together - whom we bet against the spread - in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we're going to use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each for .1 units. You'll likely double your money if three teams pull off the upset. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win, as they did for us in Week 1 last season, you'll be diving into a gold doubloon silo like a young Scrooge McDuck.Who to playSteelers +175For the second straight week, we're using a road 'dog on Thursday night. The concern about the Steelers' offense being unable to keep pace with the Browns' may be valid. However, since the last time these teams met on a Thursday - when Myles Garrett walloped Mason Rudolph with his own helmet - here are the yards gained in each matchup:STEELERSBROWNS370306299232277220394358553390323279It's less about the six straight games where Pittsburgh outgained Cleveland and more about the fact that neither team has cracked 400 yards - the exception being the Steelers' playoff loss in 2021. This game should be close, and the Browns' defense isn't all that the football community made it cracked up to be.Dolphins +190Josh Allen is 7-1 against the Dolphins in his career, but there are some polluted stats in more recent games - namely, a Week 17 matchup in 2020 and an early injury to Tua Tagovailoa last year. However, this rebuilt Miami team makes a big difference, and the South Florida heat provides a home-field advantage that can affect the Bills, who've had two comfy atmospheres to start the season.Buffalo has gotten by despite not having Tre'Davious White back and starting a rookie at corner because the Rams didn't have a second option to Cooper Kupp and the Titans didn't really have a first option on the outside. Now the Bills' secondary gets a new challenge: Accounting for both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.Texans +140Justin Fields has completed 15 forward passes this season, and the Bears are giving a full field goal against a competitive side. The Texans' run defense has been middle of the road, but facing the Colts' and Broncos' run games should mean we grade them on a curve. Meanwhile, teams have gashed Chicago on the ground, so Houston can have its offense loosened up for both Dameon Pierce and Davis Mills via play-action.Commanders +250The Eagles bandwagon is as full as can be after an impressive win at home on Monday night in an electric environment. However, the Vikings were given every opportunity to get back into that game but refused to convert their chances. Coming off short rest, Philly could sleep through a mid-afternoon game in a reputedly lame environment. If you're worried about Carson Wentz, the Commanders faced the Eagles with Taylor Heinicke and Garrett Gilbert last season, so at least it's an upgrade. I wouldn't want Wentz in front of a Philly crowd that had ample vitriol for Jalen Reagor, but Washington's offense has been solid so far, making the team worth a shot as the home 'dog at +250.Jaguars +260One prominent offshore sportsbook doesn't have this game available to bet. The ones that do - including theScore Bet - have this lined at -7, which is a number between what it would be with a healthy Justin Herbert and what it would be if Chase Daniel has to start Sunday.Maybe Herbert doesn't go - in which case, you're getting value - but even if he can play, his rib injury won't disappear this week. That hurts his preparation and regular focus, and there's a possibility he'll be unable to finish the game. Even if he's fine, there's no ruling out the Chargers dropping this contest, with all things equal, against a team evidently good enough to pitch a shutout last week. Here's how the odds look this week:PARLAYODDS (Approx.)PIT+MIA+HOU+1700PIT+MIA+WSH+2600PIT+MIA+JAX+2700PIT+HOU+WSH+2000PIT+HOU+JAX+2100PIT+WSH+JAX+3200MIA+HOU+WSH+2100MIA+HOU+JAX+2300MIA+WSH+JAX+3400HOU+WSH+JAX+2600PIT+MIA+HOU+WSH+JAX+21500Who are your five underdogs for a football betting lottery ticket?Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Giants' Golladay upset with lack of snaps: 'Came here to play'
New York Giants wide receiver Kenny Golladay isn't happy with his lack of playing time this season."I came here to play," Golladay said Wednesday, according to Connor Hughes of SNY.The 28-year-old added he doesn't agree with his team's decision not to play him, but said, "I don't really have a choice."Golladay played 77% of New York's offensive snaps in Week 1 but was limited to only two catches for 22 yards on two targets. He then logged only two snaps in Week 2 despite carrying a $21.15-million cap hit, the highest in the NFL among wide receivers, according to Spotrac.Being sidelined for most of the Carolina Panthers game confused Golladay, who said he's received praise from first-year head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen."The GM, head coach, all these coaches keep saying, 'You do everything right, you handle yourself the right way.' It's a little confusing," Golladay said."I should be playing regardless," he added. The Giants, who overhauled their coaching staff and front office this year, gave Golladay a four-year, $72-million contract in the 2021 offseason under coach Joe Judge and general manager Dave Gettleman. New York parted ways with Judge and Gettleman following the 2021 campaign.Golladay said he isn't sure whether he'd request a trade if his snap counts don't increase moving forward, adding that he's currently focused on Week 3."I'm preparing like I'm going to be playing, but who knows," he said.Golladay enjoyed two 1,000-yard seasons and led the NFL in touchdown catches once as a member of the Detroit Lions from 2017-20. The one-time Pro Bowler caught 37 passes for 521 yards in 14 games during his first season with the Giants in 2021 while failing to register a touchdown.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 3 teasers: Low totals proving to be the best vehicle for value
We dug a winner out of the dirt with our best two-team teaser last week. However, other than the expected low-scoring Patriots-Steelers and Panthers-Giants games, it's been a tough scene. Touchdown underdogs have been winning outright, and an unusual amount of 2.5-point favorites have won by a significant margin. Hopefully, the math will turn as probabilities suggest it will. Some games don't have a teaser-worthy point spread. For example, the Browns are 4.5-point favorites at home to the Steelers on Thursday. Teasing Cleveland would see the spread go through zero, which is wasting valuable price points around the improbable chance of a tie. Teasing Pittsburgh up to +10.5 would be appealing as it'd get the key numbers up to around a touchdown, but you're already winning on 3- and 4-point margins at a -110 price. Getting +6, +7, or +8 over a long sample size isn't worth the price hike.Let's use the 7-point spread in the Jaguars-Chargers game as an example of the value of teasing a contest.ALT. SPREADODDSLAC -6-145LAC -5-172LAC -4-185LAC -3-250LAC -2-300LAC -1-315You can see how the pricing significantly jumps once you move across the key number of 3, showing the importance of capturing that number in NFL betting. But more importantly, the Chargers' alternative spread (-1) is priced at -315, which is obviously a much larger price to pay than getting LAC -1 with our teaser leg at -270.To get a good deal on the Chargers (-1), we must pair them with another line and win both to cash the ticket. Fortunately, we can choose that other leg from our weekly "teaser basket" using what we know about key numbers.Teaser basketLet's look at the mathematically optimal plays available for Week 3:TEAMSPREADTEASER LEGChiefs-6.5-0.5Bills-6PKVikings-6PKEagles-6.5-0.5Titans+2.5+8.5Chargers-7-1Falcons+2.5+8.5Packers+2+8Broncos+1.5+7.5Cowboys+1.5+7.5There are a handful of dangerous situations present when a team is favored by less than a touchdown, especially when the Chiefs, Bills, and Eagles were projected to be shorter favorites just over a week ago. Meanwhile, the Chargers have Justin Herbert's rib cage to worry about, and the Vikings had two dramatic matchups against the Lions just last season. In the "tease up" department, Week 3 provides an opportunity with games featuring short spreads of under a field goal and low totals. The total for Titans-Raiders is 45.5, which is a high-octane matchup compared to the total of 42 for Falcons-Seahawks and Packers-Buccaneers. On Monday Night Football, the Cowboys-Giants total is 39.In each case, the goal will be to get +2/+2.5 to tease those underdogs up to at least eight points. Even though they didn't affect teasers, we saw two instances last week where +7 isn't quite as key as it used to be. The Falcons rightly went for a two-point conversion to get within eight points of the Rams, which is something more and more teams are doing. Also, the Browns' missed extra point cost them a game outright and the cover on -6.5. That's something that wouldn't have happened back when that kick was a mere chip shot.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. If there's a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Hurts: There's 'definitely a mutual respect' with Wentz
The Washington Commanders face off against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, marking the first time quarterback Carson Wentz will play against his former team.Ahead of the Week 3 reunion, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts said he "learned a lot" from playing alongside Wentz in 2020."He has a great arm," Hurts said Wednesday. "He's a big guy and hard to tackle. He makes kind of crazy plays in the pocket, so I definitely took notice of that when I was a rookie."He added, "There's definitely a mutual respect, and I wish him nothing but the best."The 24-year-old took over the starting job in Philadelphia in Week 13 of his rookie season, having replaced Wentz midway through the team's Week 12 matchup against the Green Bay Packers. When asked if Wentz was a helpful mentor from the sidelines after losing the starting job, Hurts said he's "focused on the now."Hurts started 22 of a possible 23 games since. He had his best game as a pro in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, throwing for 333 yards and one touchdown. He completed 83% of his passes and also ran in two touchdowns.
Burrow: Bengals 'going to be fine' despite 0-2 start
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow took a page out of Aaron Rodgers' book Wednesday while explaining why it's not time to hit the panic button despite Cincy's 0-2 start."Everyone is frustrated," Burrow said Wednesday, according to Pro Football Talk's Myles Simmons. "But ... we're not panicking. Two games in, we've got 15 games left. Let's all just take a deep breath and relax. We're going to be fine."The Bengals entered 2022 with high expectations after reaching the Super Bowl last season but have struggled in their first two games, losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime and to the Dak Prescott-less Dallas Cowboys.Cincinnati is the only team in the NFL that hasn't had a lead this year."We've just got to quit beating ourselves, start faster, and then we'll get more chances," Burrow said.He added: "The first game, first drive, pick-6. Next drive, fumble, give them 10 points off the bat, and now we're playing from behind. Defenses can pin their ears back, play third-down defense, (and) don't have to get up and challenge us. Same thing next game, we get down 14-3 early, starting in first-and-15s for the first three drives."Cincy has particularly struggled in pass protection despite signing three starting linemen during the offseason in guard Alex Cappa, center Ted Karras, and tackle La'el Collins. Burrow has been sacked a league-high 13 times."You can go and win on every route, but if you don't have the protection, it doesn't matter," said Burrow, who was also the most sacked quarterback in the NFL in 2021."And you can protect for as long as you want, but if you don't go win, it doesn't matter. It all works together."Burrow has completed 64% of his passes for 537 yards and three touchdowns against four interceptions this season. Bucs' Evans to miss Packers contest after 1-game suspension upheld
The NFL upheld Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans' one-game suspension, making him unavailable to play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, the league announced Wednesday.Evans' agent, Deryk Gilmore, criticized the league's decision."We are disappointed that the league upheld a suspension when there are several arguments of players doing more egregious violations, including punching, kicking, and choking players, and not being suspended," Gilmore wrote in a statement, per ESPN's Adam Schefter."In addition, Evans had already been ejected, which is penalty enough, but the league chose to discipline him even more. This is unfortunate, but we will respect the league's decision."The NFL suspended Evans for violating its rules on unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct in Week 2 after an altercation with New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore.Evans and Lattimore were ejected following a fight among players. After Lattimore exchanged words with Bucs quarterback Tom Brady following a Tampa Bay incompletion on third down, Evans started the fracas by pushing the defensive back. The league didn't suspend Lattimore.Losing Evans isn't the Buccaneers' only concern at wide receiver ahead of their matchup versus the Packers. Wideouts Chris Godwin's and Julio Jones' statuses are uncertain after they didn't play in Week 2 due to injuries.Tampa Bay signed veteran wide receiver Cole Beasley to its practice squad Tuesday. The team could elevate him to the active roster before Sunday, adding to a depth chart that also features Russell Gage, Scotty Miller, and Breshad Perriman. The Bucs face the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Joe Haden retiring after 12 seasons, will sign 1-day contract with Browns
Three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Joe Haden is retiring from the NFL after 12 seasons, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 33-year-old, who entered the league as a first-round pick in 2010, plans to sign a one-day contract to end his career with the Cleveland Browns. He played in Cleveland between 2010 and 2016 before enjoying a five-season stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being released.Pittsburgh didn't re-sign Haden after last season, and he started the 2022 campaign as a free agent. Haden denied reports that he rejected a return to the Steelers this offseason. The Florida product's retirement comes a day before the Browns host the Steelers on Thursday Night Football.Haden appeared in 12 games (11 starts) with Pittsburgh last year, amassing 38 tackles and six pass breakups. He allowed a passer rating of 100.1 while in coverage, his worst since at least 2018, according to Pro Football Reference. The former No. 7 overall pick established himself as one of the NFL's best corners while a member of the Browns. He earned a second-team All-Pro nod in 2013 and finished his tenure in Cleveland with 377 tackles, 19 interceptions, and one touchdown across 90 appearances. He appeared in 68 contests with the Steelers, racking up 238 tackles, 10 picks, and one TD.Haden hangs up his cleats with $121.4 million in career earnings, the second-most of all time among cornerbacks, according to Spotrac.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Only players rostered in less than 50% of leagues are considered.Quarterbacks Rey Del Rio / Getty Images Sport / GettyJared Goff, LionsNext UpRosteredFABat MIN22%$1Prior to the season, we identified Goff as a sleeper due to his past performances in the Rams' talent-filled offenses.Though it might seem strange, the Lions have built a formidable attack with a top-five offensive line and roster star skill position players like D'Andre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Detroit also greatly improved its depth over the last couple of years with the likes of T.J. Hockenson, Jamaal Williams, D.J. Chark, and Josh Reynolds. The result has been a strong start for Goff, who's averaging the ninth-most fantasy points per contest (with two games left to be played this week). That's largely due to his four-touchdown performance against the Commanders in Week 2.With the Lions' defense still struggling, Goff's numbers will continue to be boosted by volume as the team tries to keep up with their opponents.Next up is a likely shootout with the Vikings, which currently has the highest projected point total (52.5) in Week 3. Treat Goff as a high-end QB2 streamer this week with a chance to post another quality outing against the Seahawks in Week 4.Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ersNext UpRosteredFABat DEN4%$1After all the trade talk, Garoppolo has ended up in the place where he wanted to be as the 49ers' starting quarterback. Unfortunately, it had to come at the expense of Trey Lance, who's out for the season with a broken ankle. You can question Garoppolo's character (i.e., smiling while Lance was being carted off the field), but his fantasy value is pretty set in stone thanks to the weapons and system around him.Garoppolo was the QB17 in fantasy points per game a year ago and will continue to offer bye week or injury replacement value in your lineup.Carson Wentz and Jameis Winston are close to or above the 50% rostered mark but would be the top pickups at quarterback if they are available.Risky streaming options: Marcus Mariota at SEA (11% rostered), Ryan Tannehill vs. LV (19% rostered)Dart-throw streaming options: Matt Ryan vs. KC (43% rostered), Mac Jones vs. BAL (26% rostered)2QB/Superflex considerations only: Cooper Rush at NYG (2% rostered), Joe Flacco vs. CIN (2% rostered), Daniel Jones vs. DAL (24% rostered), Baker Mayfield vs. NO (17% rostered), Davis Mills at CHI (6% rostered), Geno Smith vs. ATL (6% rostered), Mitch Trubisky at CLE (7% rostered), Jacoby Brissett vs. PIT (4% rostered)Long-term stashes: Zach Wilson (5% rostered), Kenny Pickett (4% rostered)Running backs Megan Briggs / Getty Images Sport / GettyRaheem Mostert, DolphinsNext UpRosteredFABvs. BUF43%$14While Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Tua Tagovailoa will get all the headlines for the Dolphins' stunning comeback over the Ravens on Sunday, fantasy managers should take notice of a change in Miami's backfield.Mostert played more snaps (55%-51%) and received more touches (14-6) than Chase Edmonds (14-6) in Week 2 after the latter operated as the lead back in Miami's opener. The result was 79 yards from scrimmage for Mostert, including three catches. He also ran nearly as many routes as Edmonds, who was believed to be the passing-down back entering the season. The lead back in a dangerous offense would normally warrant a bigger bid on the waiver wire. But Mostert's durability concerns require a more cautious approach.Don't break the bank on a player with such a long history of getting banged up when his volume increases. For now, Mostert is an RB3 with RB2 upside for as long as he can stay healthy.Darrel Williams/Eno Benjamin, CardinalsNext UpRosteredFABvs. LAR4%/11%$5/$5With James Conner nursing an ankle issue, Benjamin and Williams need to be rostered. The good news for Conner is that early reports indicate the injury isn't serious and won't require a long-term absence, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. However, that doesn't rule out the possibility of him missing Week 3.When Conner left Sunday's game, the Cardinals' backfield turned into a timeshare with Benjamin and Williams splitting snaps. Though Benjamin served as the No. 2 back in the opener, Williams was the more productive of the two in their recent outing.Williams and Benjamin will be ranked as RB3/flex options if Conner can't suit up. Williams has the slight edge based on their latest performances. Still, it'll be difficult to confidently project one over the other until we have more information.Khalil Herbert, Kenneth Gainwell, and Brian Robinson are close to or above the 50% rostered mark but should be rostered in most leagues.High-upside backups like Rachaad White (38% rostered) and Isiah Pacheco (29% rostered) should be rostered in most leagues.Risky flex options: Mark Ingram at CAR (30% rostered), Kenyan Drake at NE (17% rostered), J.D. Wilson played 61% of the snaps and delivered a stat line of 8-102-2 on a team-leading 14 targets Sunday.More importantly, he looks the part of a difference-maker at the NFL level, and you can see his confidence growing with every reception. The Jets' coaching staff can't put their talented first-round receiver back in the box now, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect consistent top-30 production from him just yet. He's a flex option who'll develop into a star as the season progresses, and this might be your last chance to get him on your roster.Jakobi Meyers, PatriotsNext UpRosteredFABvs. BAL35%$5We're not recommending massive bids on any of the receivers this week due to the abundance of flex-worthy wideouts available in most leagues.Meyers stands out above the rest in PPR and half-PPR formats thanks to his locked-in target share in the Patriots' offense. The 25-year-old has garnered 19 targets over the first two games and turned in stat lines of 4-55-0 and 9-95-0.His aversion for the end zone continues, but Meyers will be a quality fantasy starter as long as his volume remains high as New England's No. 1 wideout.Russell Gage/Breshad Perriman, BuccaneersNext UpRosteredFABvs. GB41%/0%$4/$2Mike Evans is set to miss Week 3 after being given a one-game suspension for his role in the on-field scuffle between the Buccaneers and Saints. It's bad timing for an offense that already could be without Chris Godwin (hamstring) and Julio Jones (knee). That would leave Gage and Perriman as the next pass-catchers for Tom Brady.A hamstring issue has limited Gage this season, and he hasn't topped 30 yards in either of Tampa's first two outings. NFL Week 2 betting takeaways: Where oddsmakers rate the teams
We refer to the NFL betting market for a reason - every team has a price, and that price changes on a week-to-week basis. That's translated into moneylines and point spreads. Like shopping for a house or a car, you have to decide what price you're willing to pay when you're betting on a football team.Early in the NFL season, significant swings in team valuation are more likely. This can be due to injuries or an extreme result - a great/terrible game. We throw around terms like overrated or underrated, but we can struggle to put a number to those evaluations. That's what we try to do here in order to understand where there might be a good deal in the coming weeks. How ratings workWe look at the betting market's assessment of each team based on the closing lines from the previous week's games and then we estimate what each club is capable of going forward. The "rating" column is an educated guess at the oddsmakers' rating to create a point spread. The number itself represents the percentage chance that a team beats an average opponent on a neutral field. The range column is my evaluation of each team's potential after seeing them play this past week. Obviously, clubs don't perform at the same level every week - the players are human, after all. They play within a range. It's our job as handicappers to predict how they'll perform based on things like the situation, on-field matchups, and roster/injury issues. The earlier it is in the season, the wider a team's range may be.TEAMRATINGRANGEBills7760-85Chiefs7260-85Buccaneers7260-80Chargers6455-8549ers6445-75Rams6455-75Eagles6440-75Vikings6345-75Packers6355-70Ravens6350-75Broncos6150-75Bengals6050-75Dolphins5740-70Saints5540-70Colts5345-65Raiders5340-65Browns5240-70Titans5040-60Patriots5040-60Commanders4430-50Cardinals4330-60Panthers4330-50Giants4125-55Lions3620-50Bears3620-45Steelers3535-60Jaguars3520-50Jets3420-40Seahawks3320-40Texans3320-40Falcons3120-50Cowboys3030-70Notable Week 2 resultsAny rating change reflects what happened in Week 1 and any developments before Week 2's games. For example, it could be a small downgrade off of a loss like the 49ers (at Chicago) or the Broncos (at Seattle). Both teams won Sunday, so they could bounce back up a ratings point or two.It also could be as drastic as the Cowboys getting downgraded after the injury to Dak Prescott. Combined with a bad prime-time performance, that sent Dallas' rating to the bottom of the league. If you have any concept of betting as a marketplace, you could see a buy-low opportunity there. That's where money is made in betting on the NFL. As we thought they might, the Cowboys beat the Bengals, so next week's closing line on Monday Night Football against the Giants will reflect a bump back up for Dallas. Your opinion of how much the Cowboys should be moved up determines whether to bet them or fade them in New York. At first glance, it appears the market puts the Cooper Rush edition of the Cowboys at something closer to 40.The Pittsburgh Steelers had a similar situation but on the defensive side of the ball. With T.J. Watt out, they were a home underdog to a Patriots team that no one is all that excited about. A three-point loss indicates their bottom-of-the-range rating might be pretty solid without Watt. The Falcons and Texans were competitive for a second straight week, and the Jets and Jaguars won outright - albeit in drastically different fashions. Add the Cowboys to that group and the bottom of the NFL may be improving. As for the top of the league, the Chiefs and Buccaneers weren't the definitively superior teams in their Week 2 matchups, while the Bills handled their business yet again. Perhaps the gap at the very top will expand? Or maybe there's value on the Dolphins this week as the Bills go on the road and the point spread creeps up for a possible sell-high spot. The Eagles had a similarly impressive showing Monday night and their rating will get a significant bump since they didn't enter this season as highly touted as Buffalo. On a less impressive note, the Bengals and Colts haven't won a game, and the market won't take kindly to that. Is it just a matter of two bad outings? Knowing they can't afford to go winless through three games in the AFC, are these teams this week's buy-low opportunity?Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Reich backs Matt Ryan: 'I could not be happier that he's our quarterback'
The Indianapolis Colts are off to an 0-1-1 start, but head coach Frank Reich is still confident in quarterback Matt Ryan."What I love about Matt is that he takes responsibility. He's the leader. I could not be happier that he's our quarterback." Reich said Monday while reflecting on his team's 24-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2.Ryan, 37, has four interceptions and five fumbles to start the season. He's also been sacked seven times through two games, the third-most in the NFL.Reich pointed out that the players around Ryan have to be better if the signal-caller is to succeed."The protection yesterday wasn't our best effort. He was under duress a number of times," Reich said. "There's still mistakes that he made, that we all make, but I think overall - listen, I understand how the quarterback position is: You're really dependent on everybody else on there, but you're at the center of it, so you have to make it work."He added: "We've all got to pull it together. We all have got to carry our own weight, each one of us, including him and everybody on that offense."Injuries in the Colts' wide receiver corps have contributed to Ryan's poor start this season. Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie wide receiver Alec Pierce both missed Sunday's contest against the Jaguars.Reich said he prepared for the game believing Pittman and Pierce would play; their absences derailed Indianapolis' game plan. The Colts will look to get their first win of the season Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Power Rankings - Week 3: Best new face for all 32 teams
theScore's NFL Power Rankings take a weekly spin around the league to assess where every team stands. This week, we identify the best new face on each NFL franchise two games into the season.1. Buffalo Bills (2-0) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 1Adding Von Miller to an already-stout defense is the latest in a long line of great moves that have made the Bills the juggernaut they are. Everything we've seen through two weeks, including a 41-7 drubbing of the Titans, confirms their status as the Super Bowl favorite.2. Kansas City Chiefs (2-0)Previous Rank: 3JuJu Smith-Schuster is fitting in nicely as the leader of a new-look wide receiver room. Adding ex-Packers receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling and the former Steelers playmaker has been key to the Chiefs offense not dropping off without Tyreek Hill.3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-0)Previous Rank: 4Russell Gage may prove to be a very wise pickup considering the injuries to the Bucs' receiving corps. With Mike Evans suspended for one game and Chris Godwin and Julio Jones banged up, Gage has an opportunity to step up big.4. Los Angeles Chargers (1-1)Previous Rank: 2Khalil Mack's arrival in an offseason trade has helped take the Chargers' defense to another level. He's got four sacks in his first two games in powder blue, working opposite Joey Bosa to form the NFL's premier pass-rush duo.5. Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) Mitchell Leff / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 7The Eagles' offense looks lethal through the season's first two games. Jalen Hurts has played like a total star, and a good portion of that could be because of A.J. Brown's injection into the unit. Not only does he have 224 receiving yards, but his presence requires increased attention, which has opened up the field for others.6. Miami Dolphins (2-0)Previous Rank: 12The Dolphins trading for Tyreek Hill has worked out as well as could possibly be expected. Having to account for two similarly explosive wideouts in Hill and Jaylen Waddle has predictably been too much for opposing defenses to handle.7. Los Angeles Rams (1-1)Previous Rank: 6It took until Week 2 for him to get involved, but Allen Robinson finally got it going against the Falcons with 53 receiving yards and a touchdown. His chemistry with Matthew Stafford should only improve as the year progresses.8. Green Bay Packers (1-1)Previous Rank: 8Dealing with an inexperienced receiving group, Aaron Rodgers has at least been able to count on one veteran face in Sammy Watkins through the first two weeks. Watkins not only leads the club with 111 receiving yards, but he's also the only Packer to crack triple digits in that category.9. Baltimore Ravens (1-1)Previous Rank: 5The Ravens again paid up to make a major upgrade in the secondary, and it's already proving to be another brilliant move. Marcus Williams has a league-best three interceptions through his first two games in Baltimore.10. San Francisco 49ers (1-1) Michael Zagaris / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 15The 49ers' defense has held up their end of the bargain thus far in 2022. A big piece of credit is owed to cornerback Charvarius Ward, who has already grabbed one interception and two passes defended.11. Minnesota Vikings (1-1)Previous Rank: 10Kevin O'Connell schemed a perfect game for the Vikings and star receiver Justin Jefferson in Week 1. Though Minnesota couldn't keep that momentum rolling Monday night against the Eagles, it's clearly going to be an all-out aerial attack under O'Connell. Perhaps Monday's ugly loss would have been easier to swallow if Kirk Cousins had taken better care of the football instead of throwing three interceptions.12. New Orleans Saints (1-1)Previous Rank: 16Rooke wideout Chris Olave has quickly built trust with quarterback Jameis Winston to start the season. He recorded a team-high 13 targets in Week 2, and his 15.1 yards per reception this year tops his teammates.13. Dallas Cowboys (1-1)Previous Rank: 18Micah Parsons is carrying the load on defense, but Dallas has also received some helpful contributions from others. Offseason signing Dante Fowler came to play in Week 2 with his first sack and forced fumble for his new team.14. Denver Broncos (1-1)Previous Rank: 14Russell Wilson is our pick for the best new face in Denver, but that's simply because our faith in him is the only thing keeping the Broncos from tumbling further down this list. This team has failed to live up to expectations so far. Squeaking out a win over the Texans does little to ease concerns about Nathaniel Hackett helping this group reach its potential.15. Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) Wesley Hitt / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 9Veteran tight end Hayden Hurst already has a sizeable workload in Cincinnati's offense. He trails only Ja'Marr Chase in targets on the team and is tied with Tee Higgins for second in receptions with 10. The Bengals will have to find more ways to get the ball downfield to their best receivers if they're going to bounce back from this surprisingly poor start.16. Arizona Cardinals (1-1)Previous Rank: 20Marquise Brown and Kyler Murray haven't exactly recreated their college success, but the fourth-year wideout has clearly benefited from playing in the Cardinals' aerial attack. With DeAndre Hopkins still out due to a suspension, Brown has taken the No. 1 role by the horns with 111 receiving yards through two games.17. Detroit Lions (1-1)Previous Rank: 25Aidan Hutchinson has been the perfect fit for the Lions since selecting him second overall. After a quiet debut, Hutchinson burst onto the scene with a monster three-sack performance against the Commanders in Week 2.18. New York Giants (2-0)Previous Rank: 21The Giants have looked like a rejuvenated side under new head coach Brian Daboll. The former Bills offensive coordinator has Daniel Jones completing over 70% of his passes, while Saquon Barkley is finally becoming a star after averaging 6.1 yards per carry.19. Las Vegas Raiders (0-2)Previous Rank: 11Davante Adams has been as advertised. The rest of the equation in Vegas? Not so good. Unless the offensive line can do a better job up front, the Raiders' offense will be prone to disappearing at times, just as it did in the Cardinals' wild comeback win Sunday.20. New England Patriots (1-1) Maddie Meyer / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 28First-round rookie Cole Strange looks like a solid addition to the offensive line, but there aren't many newcomers to choose from here. Perhaps returning so much of last year's mediocre roster is part of the problem in New England.21. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1)Previous Rank: 17The Steelers adding Brian Flores to their defensive staff always felt like a quietly great move. The strong play they've gotten from their linebackers early on is probably no coincidence.22. New York Jets (1-1)Previous Rank: 32Selecting the Jets' top newcomer is an easy call. First-round rookie receiver Garrett Wilson followed up a solid Week 1 by recording 102 yards and two touchdowns in Week 2. He scored the game-winner Sunday to complete an epic last-minute comeback win over the Browns.23. Cleveland Browns (1-1)Previous Rank: 19Amari Cooper, who the Browns bizarrely acquired from the Cowboys for next to nothing, has more catches (12) than all other Cleveland wideouts combined (eight). This team would be 2-0 if it weren't for a historic collapse against the Jets.24. Washington Commanders (1-1)Previous Rank: 23The Carson Wentz experience was always going to be a roller-coaster ride, but there have been more thrills than stomach-turning moments so far. Wentz has thrown for 650 yards with seven touchdowns to three interceptions through two games. An honorable mention should also go to rookie receiver Jahan Dotson, who's caught three touchdowns.25. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) Courtney Culbreath / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 27Doug Pederson is our pick for the best newcomer in Jacksonville. It's his offense that finally has Trevor Lawrence on the superstar track we expected. However, there's no shortage of offseason additions helping the Jaguars get started in the right direction, including veteran wideout Christian Kirk and No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker.26. Tennessee Titans (0-2)Previous Rank: 22First-round receiver Treylon Burks has hit the ground running in Tennessee, immediately establishing himself as the club's leading receiver. Not much else has gone right for the Titans, and a 41-7 loss to the Bills highlighted a lot of their shortcomings.27. Indianapolis Colts (0-1-1)Previous Rank: 13The Colts have struggled early in the season, with a 24-0 loss to the Jaguars being the latest major letdown. Stephon Gilmore gets the nod here as he remains an impact player in the secondary. Not picking Matt Ryan for best new face tells you everything you need to know about Indy's offense.28. Seattle Seahawks (1-1)Previous Rank: 24The Seahawks looked flat in Week 2 after their emotional season-opening win over the Broncos. However, Uchenna Nwosu is one exciting player worth watching. The 25-year-old has been a playmaker through two games, recording a sack, forced fumble, and five quarterback hits.29. Atlanta Falcons (0-2)Previous Rank: 31Pundits may have had some questions after the Falcons made Drake London the first receiver taken in this year's draft. But London has answered any concerns extraordinarily, hauling in 13 balls for 160 yards and a touchdown. Through two games, it seems like Atlanta has found the WR1 it desired.30. Houston Texans (0-1-1) Carmen Mandato / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 30Jerry Hughes has been a sneaky good veteran addition for the Texans, leading the defense with two sacks while adding an interception. Look for rookies Dameon Pierce and Derek Stingley Jr. to emerge as the season progresses.31. Chicago Bears (1-1)Previous Rank: 29The Bears' offense remains a major work in progress, though their investments on defense are trending in the right direction. Rookie safety Jaquan Brisker has started each of the first two games and appears to be a serviceable complement to Eddie Jackson.32. Carolina Panthers (0-2)Previous Rank: 26Acquiring Baker Mayfield hasn't translated into wins as he hasn't gotten into a rhythm. His 53.6 completion percentage and 79.5 passer rating leave a lot to be desired. With the Panthers enduring a long quarterback carousel in recent years without success, perhaps that's more of an indictment on head coach Matt Rhule.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Buccaneers adding Beasley to practice squad
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are signing wide receiver Cole Beasley to their practice squad with the expectation he'll soon be elevated to the active roster, a source told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady has had Beasley on his radar amid a push for the team to acquire a veteran wideout, Garafolo adds.Tampa Bay's receiving corps is currently shorthanded. Both Chris Godwin and Julio Jones missed the team's Week 2 win over the New Orleans Saints due to injuries, and Mike Evans is facing a one-game suspension following an altercation in that contest.Beasley spent the past three seasons with the Buffalo Bills. The 33-year-old recorded 82 receptions for 693 yards and one touchdown during his 2021 campaign. He spent seven seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Bills. The addition of Beasley would give the Buccaneers yet another established passing target for Brady after they signed Jones and Russell Gage this offseason.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Giants signing Jaylon Smith

Jeudy had one catch for 11 yards before leaving Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.Surtain left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury and did not return.Hackett wasn't sure whether Jeudy or Surtain would play in Denver's Week 3 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cardinals' Conner avoids significant ankle injury
Running back James Conner avoided a significant ankle injury during the Arizona Cardinals' 29-23 OT win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. It's not a serious or long-term issue, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Conner rushed for 25 yards on seven carries to go along with two receptions for 26 yards before exiting Sunday's contest.Darrel Williams and Eno Benjamin split a majority of the Cardinals' rush attempts with Conner sidelined.Conner's status for Arizona's game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday remains uncertain. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said the tailback's status is day-to-day as he works through the ankle issue, according to team reporter Darren Urban. The 27-year-old rushed for 752 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, earning the second Pro Bowl nod of his career. He also tallied 37 receptions for 375 yards.Arizona rewarded Conner with a three-year, $21-million contract extension in March.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Stefanski: I should've told players not to score late in 4th quarter vs. Jets
Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said he could've instructed quarterback Jacoby Brissett and his offense to run out the clock and secure a win against the New York Jets on Sunday."Let me be clear on this: I absolutely could've told Jacoby (to not let anyone score) in that situation," Stefanski said, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com."That's on me to communicate that to the huddle. We've done that before," he added, per ESPN's Jake Trotter. "Having said that, we need to close that game out."With his team leading by seven, Nick Chubb opted to score a touchdown late in the fourth quarter instead of going down in bounds. While the score gave Cleveland a 13-point lead with only 1:55 to play, it also provided New York the opportunity to stage a comeback. The Jets scored a 66-yard touchdown two plays later, recovered the ensuing onside kick, and then drove down for the game-winning score to clinch a 31-30 victory. This was the first time in 2,230 contests that a team leading by at least 13 points in the final two minutes wound up losing, according to ESPN Stats & Info.Stefanski also criticized the defense for Cleveland's late-game collapse."It should never happen. We have to be able to defend the pass in obvious passing situations," the 40-year-old coach said, according to The Athletic's Zac Jackson. "Something we have to get fixed immediately."The Browns will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Evans suspended 1 game for role in Bucs-Saints brawl
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans was suspended one game without pay Monday for violating the NFL's rules on unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct during Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints.Evans and Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore were ejected after a fight broke out among players. Lattimore exchanged words with Bucs quarterback Tom Brady following a third-down play and then Evans pushed the defensive back, starting the fracas. The NFL won't suspend Lattimore, though he'll likely be fined, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter."When you noticed your teammates engaged in a confrontation with Saints players, you ran toward that area on the field and violently threw your body into and struck an unsuspecting opponent who was part of that confrontation," NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan wrote to Evans."You knocked your opponent to the ground, and a melee ensued involving players from both teams. Your aggressive conduct could have caused serious injury to your opponent and clearly does not reflect the high standards of sportsmanship expected of a professional."Evans is expected to appeal the suspension, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler."We don't want any fighting in our game because we lose a good player," Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said Monday, according to Greg Auman of the Athletic. "It doesn't help our team. We don't condone that, we don't teach that, we don't want that in our game."If Evans' suspension stands, he'll miss Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers. The four-time Pro Bowler would be eligible to return in Week 4 versus the Kansas City Chiefs.Evans leads Tampa Bay with eight catches for 132 yards and one touchdown in two games this season. He received a one-game suspension in 2017 for hitting Lattimore after the whistle, which also led to an altercation. The 2-0 Bucs are banged up at wide receiver, as Chris Godwin and Julio Jones didn't play in Sunday's win due to injuries. Tampa Bay still rosters wideouts Russell Gage, Scotty Miller, and Breshad Perriman, who scored the team's only offensive touchdown in Week 2.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. He'll see his first game action since Week 13 of the 2021 season."Josh just needs opportunities to prove that he's still the incredible player and talent he's always been,” his agent said. The 31-year-old has played 75 career games, totaling 252 catches for 4,284 yards and 21 touchdowns.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. 49ers' Lance out for season with broken ankle
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Sunday that quarterback Trey Lance broke his ankle in Sunday's 27-7 win against the Seattle Seahawks and will undergo season-ending surgery.Lance was carted off to the locker room with an air cast on his ankle in the first quarter. The 49ers ruled him out for the rest of the contest minutes later, and Jimmy Garoppolo took over under center for San Francisco. The 22-year-old went down after taking a hit while trying to run the ball at Seattle's 21-yard line on his third carry of the day. He also went 2-for-3 passing for 30 yards before exiting.
Broncos' Jeudy, Surtain suffer shoulder injuries in win over Texans
Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and cornerback Pat Surtain did not finish Sunday's 16-9 victory against the Houston Texans due to shoulder injuries. Both players were originally deemed questionable to return before being declared out shortly after halftime.Jeudy suffered the injury in the first quarter after coming down awkwardly on an incomplete pass, and he went into the medical tent before heading to the locker room. Surtain was seen favoring his shoulder before exiting the contest.Surtain is the latest injury to the Broncos' secondary after safety Justin Simmons was placed on injured reserve with a thigh injury earlier this week.Jeudy was coming off a big Week 1 showing after recording four catches for 102 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He finished Sunday's game with one reception for 11 yards.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
