The New York Giants are signing free-agent safety Landon Collins, he told Josina Anderson of CBS Sports.Collins will travel to London to be with the team ahead of its game against the Green Bay Packers. The Giants plan to use Collins in more of a linebacker role, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.Collins, 28, was a second-round pick by the Giants in 2015 and spent four seasons with New York. Saints' Kamara expects to return in Week 5 vs. Seahawks
Running back Alvin Kamara revealed he's feeling good and expects to play Sunday when the New Orleans Saints take on the Seattle Seahawks."The main thing for me is just being able to help the team any way I can," Kamara said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Katherine Terrell. "Just being all the way healthy and available on Sunday, that's my biggest thing."The five-time Pro Bowler is dealing with a rib injury sustained during the Saints' season-opening win against the Atlanta Falcons. He's missed two games so far, including last week's 28-25 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London. He was a limited participant in the team's first day of practice this week.Kamara believes he probably returned too soon after sitting out Week 2 and returning the following week against the Carolina Panthers, according to Luke Johnson of the New Orleans Advocate. The 2017 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year has rushed for 100 yards on 24 carries in two games this season.Kamara detailed the complexity of rehabbing a "weird injury" that feels different almost daily."It's one of those things you've got to kind of be easy with and one morning you wake up and it's feeling terrible, the next morning you wake up and it's feeling better," he said.Regardless of when Kamara makes his return, the star halfback plans to wear extra padding as a precaution. While Kamara appears to be on track to return Sunday, the same cannot be said for quarterback Jameis Winston and receiver Michael Thomas. Head coach Dennis Allen didn't provide an update on either player after they missed last week's defeat to Minnesota.Winston is dealing with both back and ankle injuries, while Thomas has been hampered by a foot issue.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Protester tackled by Rams' Wagner files police report over incident
The protester who was tackled by Bobby Wagner after running onto the field during Monday Night Football has filed a police report against the Los Angeles Rams linebacker.A spokesperson for the Santa Clara Police Department confirmed to TMZ Sports that the man filed the report over the incident on Tuesday but didn't reveal any additional details. The individual, who's an animal rights activist with the organization Direct Action Everywhere, ran onto the field at Levi's Stadium with a pink smoke bomb during the second quarter of the Rams' 24-9 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. After evading security, he was brought down by Wagner and teammate Takkarist McKinley.
Jonathan Taylor ruled out for TNF vs. Broncos
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor won't play on Thursday Night Football against the Denver Broncos due to an ankle injury, the team announced.Taylor suffered the ankle injury during the Colts' loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The 23-year-old was in a walking boot at practice on Tuesday and mentioned he was hoping to play on Thursday."I definitely do plan to play, but if you can't go, you can't go," Taylor said, according to ESPN's Stephen Holder. "That's why you have to get as much treatment as you can."Colts' running back Nyheim Hines is expected to shoulder the load on Thursday night with Taylor out.Taylor has 81 carries for 328 yards and one touchdown through four games this season. The Colts' rushing attack is off to a slow start, ranking 27th in rushing yards per game.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cole Beasley retires after 11 seasons
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Cole Beasley is retiring from the NFL after 11 seasons, his agent told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo."He is ready to be with his family after playing in 11 seasons, and it's time to be a full-time dad and husband," his agent said.Beasley was signed to the Buccaneers practice squad on Sept. 21 and was elevated to the active roster two days later. He played in two games for the Buccaneers, catching four passes for 17 yards. The 33-year-old also played for the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills during his career. He spent seven years with the Cowboys and three with the Bills. His best season came in 2020 when he hauled in 82 catches for 967 yards and four touchdowns with Buffalo. The undrafted free agent played four years in college at SMU. The Cowboys signed him before the 2012 season.Beasley sparked controversy in June 2021 when he announced on social media that he wouldn't get vaccinated, even if it meant ending his NFL career, and criticized league guidelines. He was fined $15,000 in August of the same year for violating the NFL's COVID-19 protocols.Beasley finishes his NFL career with 554 catches for 5,726 yards and 34 touchdowns.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Commanders' Robinson designated to return to practice 5 weeks after shooting
Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson is able to practice this week after the team designated him to return from the PUP list, the team announced Wednesday.Robinson was medically cleared on Monday after being shot in the leg twice as the victim of an attempted robbery in August. The rookie running back out of Alabama now has a 21-day evaluation window to determine if he'll be back on the active roster or revert to the PUP list.Head coach Ron Rivera has been optimistic about Robinson's return. After being selected in the third round, the 23-year-old looked great in training camp and had 14 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown in his two preseason appearances.Once healthy and back on the active roster, Robinson will join a backfield that includes Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

NFL Week 5 teasers: Point spreads flipping the script
It was another rough scene in teaser town in Week 4. Some lost in baffling fashion, like the Broncos (+8.5), while some weren't really ever close, like the Buccaneers - who actually ended up closing as favorites! Those who tried foolishly to tease down a 9.5-point favorite found out why we don't do that when the Packers needed overtime to beat the Patriots. Some games don't have a teaser-worthy point spread, and there are a lot of them in Week 5 - with almost half of this week's games lined between -3 and -5.5.For example, the Rams are 4.5-point favorites at home to the Cowboys on Sunday. Teasing Los Angeles would see the spread go through zero, which is wasting valuable price points around the improbable chance of a tie. Teasing Dallas up to +10.5 would be appealing as it would capture the key numbers around a touchdown, but you're already winning on 3- and 4-point margins at a -110 price. Getting +6, +7, or +8 over a long sample size isn't worth the price hike that a teaser leg of -270 requires. There are a couple of big favorites that we can pull down under a field goal in a valuable way. Let's use this week's game in London between the Giants and Packers (-8) as an example of the value of teasing a favorite down:ALT. SPREADODDSPackers -7-138Packers -6-163Packers -5-190Packers -4-210Packers -3-300Packers -2-350You can see how the pricing significantly jumps once you move across the key number of -3, showing the importance of capturing that number in NFL betting. But more importantly, the Packers' alternative spread (-2) is priced at -350, which is obviously a much larger price than getting Packers -2 with a teaser leg at -270.To get a good deal on the Packers (-2), we must pair them with another team, needing to win both to cash the ticket. Fortunately, we can choose that other leg from our weekly "teaser basket" using what we know about key numbers.Teaser basketLet's look at the mathematically-optimal plays available for Week 5:TEAMSPREADTEASER LEGPackers-8-2Buccaneers-8.5-2.5Vikings-7-1Jaguars-7-1Commanders+2.5+8.549ers-6.5-0.5Chiefs-7-1It's the opposite situation from last week when there were a handful of tightly-lined games that could be teased up and just one game lined around a touchdown. We've got six favorites lurking between -6.5 and -8.5 that are primed to be teased down. Basically, any favorite whose moneyline is greater than -270 provides value as a teaser piece. It's up to the bettor to decide which team is impervious to an upset. As for teams that can be teased up, the lone candidate as of this writing is the Commanders as +2.5 home underdogs against the Titans. So far this season, though, Washington seems capable of anything, including getting blown out at home. It will be interesting to see if the line creeps up to a flat 3-point spread, joining Colts-Broncos, Lions-Patriots, Chargers-Browns, Dolphins-Jets, and Bengals-Ravens as games where if you like the underdog, you're better off long term just taking the three points at -110 or better.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Report: Cowboys' Prescott won't return in Week 5 vs. Rams
Quarterback Dak Prescott won't make his return when the Dallas Cowboys face off with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, a source Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News.Cooper Rush is expected to start under center once again, with Will Grier serving as his backup.Team owner Jerry Jones didn't close the door on Prescott returning in Week 5 despite revealing that the quarterback still can't grip the ball well enough to play."I know it's better," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, according to The Athletic's Jon Machota. "I know he's gonna go out every day and make progress toward being able to grip the ball. He'll have a big week, and he'll be hard on himself getting ready to go."Jones added: "Yesterday was a day off. My point is we're just starting the week. Let's see how the week goes."Prescott, 29, has been sidelined since Dallas' season opener after undergoing surgery on a fracture near his thumb. He said last week he was targeting a Week 5 return against the Rams.Rush, meanwhile, has led the Cowboys' offense in Prescott's absence, winning all three of his starts. Rush, 28, has thrown for four touchdowns to zero interceptions and engineered two game-winning drives.Jones said in September he would welcome a quarterback competition if Rush played well enough. He noted Tuesday he doesn't see a scenario in which Rush starts over a healthy Prescott.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Power Rankings - Week 5
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors.1. Philadelphia Eagles (4-0) Mitchell Leff / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 1Under heavy rain and wind in Week 4, Philly once again proved it can win games on both sides of the ball. The Eagles rushed for 210 yards versus the Jaguars' top-ranked run defense and also forced five Trevor Lawrence turnovers.2. Kansas City Chiefs (3-1)Previous Rank: 4Taking it to the Bucs in a prime-time rematch of Super Bowl LV is enough for us to give the Chiefs a pass for their Week 3 loss to the Colts. When this team is at its best, there may not be anyone else who can keep up.3. Buffalo Bills (3-1)Previous Rank: 3The Bills' offense isn't firing on all cylinders right now, but we have no doubt it's a matter of time. The fact the defense has been so good despite injury issues in the secondary bodes well looking ahead to the playoffs.4. Green Bay Packers (3-1)Previous Rank: 5It wasn't pretty, but Aaron Rodgers and the Packers did just enough to beat a New England team with a third-string quarterback under center. Green Bay has now won back-to-back games against teams that made the playoffs last year despite its offense not being nearly as productive as last season.5. Miami Dolphins (3-1) Andy Lyons / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 2The Dolphins remain one of the NFL's most interesting teams when healthy, but Tua Tagovailoa's absence will likely have a major impact on the offense. And with no clear timeline for his return, it's tough to know what to expect from Miami.6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-2)Previous Rank: 6Let's not hit the panic button in Tampa Bay based on Sunday's defeat to the Chiefs. Granted, it was an ugly loss for the Bucs, who couldn't move the ball on the ground and had no answers on defense. But Tom Brady and Todd Bowles, whose defensive unit had allowed only 25 points combined entering Week 4, still have time to figure things out.7. Dallas Cowboys (3-1)Previous Rank: 12Dallas didn't turn the ball over on offense for the second consecutive game, its defense has arguably been the best in the NFL, and the Cowboys have now won three straight. Dak Prescott potentially returning from injury next week would be clutch with games against the Rams and Eagles coming up.8. San Francisco 49ers (2-2)Previous Rank: 15The 49ers had the perfect answer to last week's ugly loss to the Broncos and dominated the Rams on Monday. While San Francisco's offense will have ups and downs, the team's defense is on another level right now. The Niners' top-ranked defensive unit hasn't allowed more than nine points to any of its last three opponents.9. Baltimore Ravens (2-2)Previous Rank: 8We won't overreact to the Ravens losing to the Dolphins and Bills, two teams deservedly near the top of our rankings. Lamar Jackson is once again an MVP candidate, and there's just too much defensive talent for Baltimore not to solve its issues on that side of the ball.10. Los Angeles Rams (2-2) Ezra Shaw / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 7Four games into the season, the defending champs don't have a convincing win, and the Rams lost big to the Bills and 49ers - the two best opponents they've faced. The superstar players are still there, but Sean McVay's squad has too many holes right now.11. Cincinnati Bengals (2-2)Previous Rank: 13After a frustrating 0-2 start, back-to-back wins suddenly have the Bengals back at .500. There's still plenty of work to be done, particularly on the new-look offensive line, but the star power was eventually going to take over.12. Minnesota Vikings (3-1)Previous Rank: 9Although dropping the Vikings after they edged the Saints might look weird, they barely beat a New Orleans team that played without Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara and had backup Andy Dalton at quarterback. Yes, a win is a win, but Minnesota's now failed to replicate its great season-opening performance against Green Bay in three straight games.13. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-2)Previous Rank: 10Sunday's loss to the Eagles was a rough one, particularly for Trevor Lawrence. But we're not going to fault the Jaguars too much for losing to our top-ranked team in some sloppy weather. Blowing out the Colts and Chargers still portends good things for this upstart group.14. Los Angeles Chargers (2-2)Previous Rank: 11The Chargers got back in the win column with a victory over the Texans, but it wasn't exactly the most inspiring result. Some defensive lapses and the offense disappearing for most of the second half allowed Houston to score 17 unanswered and make a game of it. We see the flashes, but L.A. has to be more consistent.15. New York Giants (3-1) Al Bello / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 19The Giants are off to their best start since 2011. Granted, the easy schedule has been a factor, but this team might have a shot against any opponent if Saquon Barkley - who racked up 162 scrimmage yards in Week 4 and now leads the league with 570 - keeps showing up.16. Tennessee Titans (2-2)Previous Rank: 22Derrick Henry beginning to heat up over the last two weeks has been the leading factor as Tennessee's rebounded from a tough start with consecutive wins. The Titans go as far as their superstar running back will take them.17. Atlanta Falcons (2-2)Previous Rank: 27Atlanta's played better than most people imagined before the season. The Falcons have won two in a row, they played well in their loss to the Rams, and they should've beaten the Saints in Week 1. Atlanta would jump into first place in the NFC South with a Week 5 victory over Tampa Bay.18. Seattle Seahawks (2-2)Previous Rank: 31After victories over the Broncos and Lions, the Seahawks still don't have a statement win, but they do deserve more respect after putting on a show offensively Sunday. Geno Smith's been great through the first four weeks and Seattle's running game is averaging 5.2 yards per carry.19. Arizona Cardinals (2-2)Previous Rank: 21While the Cardinals can celebrate their (unimpressive) win over the Panthers, they shouldn't be happy about how their offense has performed. Kyler Murray and Co. still have a lot of work to do.20. Las Vegas Raiders (1-3) Michael Owens / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 26The Raiders finally started to show signs of the playoff contender we expected in a win over the Broncos, but the real test is Monday night against the Chiefs. A brutal 0-3 start gives them minimal room for error.21. Denver Broncos (2-2)Previous Rank: 14The good news: Russell Wilson put together his first strong performance with the Broncos. The bad news: Running game issues on both sides of the ball saw them lose to the Raiders anyway. And now star Javonte Williams is out for the season. Nothing is going right for Denver.22. Detroit Lions (1-3)Previous Rank: 18Putting up 45 points despite playing without D'Andre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown is great news, but the Lions' defense once again disappointed. Detroit didn't force the Seahawks to punt a single time Sunday and allowed 555 total yards. As competitive as the Lions have been - the team's three losses were all one-score games - their only win this season came against the struggling Commanders.23. Indianapolis Colts (1-2-1)Previous Rank: 16We wanted to believe that upsetting the Chiefs could kick-start the Colts' season. A letdown game against the Titans proved that would not be the case. Matt Ryan's presence just hasn't had the expected impact on the Indy offense, and there's no shortage of issues elsewhere on the roster.24. New Orleans Saints (1-3)Previous Rank: 17The loss to the Vikings - which was New Orleans' third straight defeat - isn't the biggest issue considering that the Saints were missing their top quarterback, running back, and wide receiver. The biggest issue is that the Saints have committed the most turnovers (11) and the second-most penalties (34) in the NFL this year.25. New York Jets (2-2) Joe Sargent / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 29The Jets have a long way to go, but some of the young talent on this roster is really beginning to shine. Zach Wilson leading the way to a comeback win on the road in Pittsburgh in his first game back could be a great sign for his development.26. Cleveland Browns (2-2)Previous Rank: 20A .500 record looks fine on the surface. The optimistic viewpoint here is that the Browns coulda, shoulda, woulda been 4-0. But the reality is, they aren't. And their wins came against the Steelers and Panthers, two of the NFL's worst teams thus far. A brutal upcoming schedule will tell us who this team really is.27. New England Patriots (1-3)Previous Rank: 23Full credit to the Patriots for giving the Packers a run for their money with Bailey Zappe at quarterback for most of the game. The season-long outlook still isn't great with a roster lacking any real top-end talent, but defensive performances like that will create opportunities for wins.28. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-3)Previous Rank: 24The Kenny Pickett era has officially begun in Pittsburgh. The Steelers seemingly aren't in a position to compete, so this season could be all about the development of their rookie quarterback.29. Chicago Bears (2-2)Previous Rank: 28Somehow, Chicago has two wins. Though the Bears have been able to run the ball well this year, the rest of their offense has been as bad as preseason predictions anticipated.30. Washington Commanders (1-3) Richard Rodriguez / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 25The Commanders seem harmless. Washington has almost as many sacks allowed (11) as total points scored (18) in its last two games.31. Carolina Panthers (1-3)Previous Rank: 30It's been a disastrous season for the Panthers' offense, which gave up three turnovers in Week 4. Carolina ranks 31st in the league with only 27 first downs in 2022.32. Houston Texans (0-3-1)Previous Rank: 32The Texans have a few young pieces to build around, including stud rookie running back Dameon Pierce. As their winless start shows, though, this roster has a long way to go as a whole.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Colts' Taylor sports boot on injured ankle, hopeful of playing in TNF
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor was wearing a walking boot at practice Tuesday but is still aiming to play Thursday night against the Denver Broncos."I definitely do plan to play, but if you can't go, you can't go," Taylor said, according to ESPN's Stephen Holder. "That's why you have to get as much treatment as you can."Taylor was unable to finish Sunday's loss to the Tennessee Titans due to an ankle injury. Tests on his injured ankle reportedly came back negative Monday.Head coach Frank Reich told reporters the prospect of Taylor doing further damage if he were to play Thursday is "not a concern at this point."Nyheim Hines would likely receive an expanded workload if Taylor is unable to suit up.After leading the NFL in rushing yards last season, Taylor has put up 328 yards over four games this year.Indianapolis heads into Week 5 with a 1-2-1 record.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL sets new record for close games in Week 4
The NFL's latest slate of games featured a record number of close scores in the fourth quarter.Fifteen of the 16 games played in Week 4 had a one-score difference at some point during the fourth quarter, which marks a new record for the NFL, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. It's not just Week 4 that's seen a wealth of close games. Florio notes that 50 of 64 contests through the first four weeks of the 2022 NFL season have been one-score affairs in the fourth quarter - another record. There has been widespread parity in the standings so far this season, too, with 15 of 32 franchises currently sitting 2-2. The Philadelphia Eagles are the only undefeated team entering Week 5.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Steelers name Pickett starting QB
The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving forward with rookie Kenny Pickett as their starting quarterback, the team announced Tuesday.Head coach Mike Tomlin explained that the offense's overall struggles played a factor in the quarterback change."(Mitch Trubisky's) performance was a component of the decision but not the only component of the decision," Tomlin said Tuesday, according to team reporter Dale Lolley."That's not fair to him," Tomlin added, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. "He's played better than that description, but we haven't."Pickett's first start will come against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The rookie made his NFL debut in Week 4, replacing Trubisky after the latter was benched in the second half of the Steelers' 24-20 loss to the New York Jets.Pickett completed 10-of-13 pass attempts for 120 yards and three interceptions in his regular-season debut. The Pitt product also added two rushing touchdowns. Meanwhile, Trubisky exited the contest having completed 7-of-13 passes for 84 yards and one interception.Pickett led the Steelers back from a 10-6 first-half deficit to a 20-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Jets then scored 14 unanswered points to take the win and drop the Steelers to 1-3 on the season.Tomlin praised the rookie's preparation on his journey to becoming the Steelers' starting quarterback."We have no reservations of what Kenny is going to be capable of in terms of our schematics. ... Kenny has shown us maturity at every component of this process," Tomlin noted, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor.Trubisky, who signed a two-year, $14.2-million contract with the club in March, hasn't provided stability in the franchise's first season without Ben Roethlisberger.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Broncos' Gregory placed on IR with knee injury
Denver Broncos outside linebacker Randy Gregory will miss at least the next four games after being placed on injured reserve Tuesday, the team announced.Gregory, who'll be eligible to return in Week 10, is set to undergo a knee scope, head coach Nathaniel Hackett told reporters Monday. The 29-year-old could miss up to six weeks depending on his recovery from arthroscopic knee surgery, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Gregory was carted off the field after being examined in the team's medical tent during the second half of Sunday's 32-23 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. His ACL is intact based on imaging, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, and the surgery will trim the meniscus in his injured knee.Gregory signed a five-year, $70-million contract with the Broncos in March. Prior to joining the AFC club, he was a member of the Dallas Cowboys dating back to 2015. The former second-round selection tallied 85 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, and 16.5 sacks during his Dallas tenure. The star pass-rusher has recorded nine tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss, and seven QB hits in four games this season. While Denver expects Gregory to return to the field this year, the Broncos learned Monday that running back Javonte Williams will reportedly miss the rest of the 2022 season after suffering a torn ACL and LCL in Week 4.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 4 betting takeaways: Where oddsmakers rate the teams
Through four weeks of the NFL season, you can probably assign a good, bad, and ugly game to each team so far. We've seen top teams like the Bills, Chiefs, and Buccaneers play poorly once, and bottom teams like the Jets, Falcons, and Texans all play well enough to win, or at least cover, consistently. Now that we've seen all teams through both clear and blurry lenses, we can begin to tighten their range - the high- and low-end expectations of their play for a given week. With a smaller range of expectations, it illuminates when there's an outlier: an over-adjusted point spread due to new circumstances. When a spread suggests that a team is outside of its established range (high or low), that should trigger a buy-low or sell-high opportunity. In advance of Week 1, the Browns were downgraded with Jacoby Brissett getting the start. Before Week 2, it was the Cowboys after the Dak Prescott injury. For Week 3, the Titans were deemed incompetent after getting blown out in prime time the week before (they're 2-0 since). Last week, the Patriots were downgraded heavily in their first game without Mac Jones. What does each have in common? All of those teams covered. How ratings workWe look at the betting market's assessment of each team based on the closing lines from the previous week's games, and then we estimate what each club is capable of going forward. The "rating" column is an educated guess at the oddsmakers' rating to create a point spread before their most recent game. The number itself represents the percentage chance that a team beats an average opponent on a neutral field. The range column is my evaluation of each team's potential after seeing them play this past week. Obviously, clubs don't perform at the same level every week - the players are human, after all. They play within a range. It's our job as handicappers to predict how they'll perform based on things like the situation, on-field matchups, and roster/injury issues. The earlier it is in the season, the wider a team's range may be.Rating before Week 4 kickoffTEAMRATINGRANGEBills8065-85Buccaneers7360-80Chiefs7265-85Eagles6550-75Packers6555-7549ers6450-75Rams6455-75Ravens6155-75Bengals5850-70Chargers5655-75Vikings5645-70Raiders5440-60Broncos5250-75Dolphins5145-70Colts5045-65Jaguars4930-50Browns4640-65Cowboys4630-70Saints4240-60Cardinals4230-60Patriots4040-60Lions4330-50Panthers4125-50Giants4125-50Titans4040-60Commanders4030-50Steelers3835-60Bears3630-45Falcons3530-50Jets3525-40Texans3325-40Seahawks3025-40Notable Week 4 resultsAtop the ratings, the Bills' defense held up in the second half against the Ravens, so we'll raise the backend of their range. The Buccaneers closed as short favorites over Kansas City, which showed an increase to their rating with the return of their healthy receiving corps. We were excited to see the Eagles cash our 14-1 tickets on being the last undefeated team this season, but we're tempering expectations by slowly shifting their range upward. That beep-beep sound you hear is the Jaguars' rating backing up after being inflated before Sunday, only to see them blow a 14-0 jumpstart in Philadelphia. The Chargers' injuries lower their high-end capabilities, but for last week, their 56 rating was too low, as they still had enough talent to take care of the Texans.Much was made of the Dolphins' issues turning around on a short week after a particularly hard-fought game with the Bills, but a significant drop was built into that line against the Bengals, as it crept over 3.5 points.Based on a low rating that made them underdogs to the 0-3 Raiders, a bet should have been triggered on the Broncos. But having watched them closely for the previous three weeks, they might just be thoroughly mediocre. We'll leave the door open for the offense to click so they can reach preseason expectations.Dallas moved to 3-0 with Cooper Rush at quarterback, but with Prescott's return looming, do we even need to change the Cowboys' rating when he comes back? They'll certainly be rated higher going into next week regardless, and the defense leaves open the possibility for a higher peak. Why were the Seahawks a good bet last week? Because they were rated as the worst team in the NFL, and they're not. Speaking of teams rated poorly, one of our best calls from before the season is a belief that the Falcons aren't "that bad." They're the last undefeated team in the NFL - against the spread that is.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. If there’s a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Larry Csonka on the '72 Dolphins and NFL perfection: 'I guard it jealously'
Fifty years ago, the Miami Dolphins fielded the NFL's best offense and its stingiest defense. They ran the ball up the gut and recorded three shutouts while holding four more opponents to 10 points or fewer, including when they triumphed in Super Bowl VII to finish the 1972 season undefeated. They're proud of the achievement. Legend holds that the '72 Dolphins pop Champagne annually, toasting the exclusivity of their famous feat every time the league's last unbeaten team loses."The Champagne toast is (more) of a cold beer celebration, in my opinion. It's the players talking to each other because it keeps us in an active mode, even though some of us have been retired for 40-some years," Larry Csonka, the Hall of Fame fullback who was Miami's rushing leader in '72, said in a recent interview."We're the only ones sitting on top of the mountain," Csonka continued. "When someone starts getting up close, we start to get nervous. We start to talk to our teammates about it and get their opinions."Together, we get competitive again."Larry Csonka (center) runs the ball in Super Bowl VII. Focus On Sport / Getty ImagesCsonka is 75 years old and wrote a memoir, "Head On," that is in bookstores Tuesday. The book explains how the Dolphins summited the peak in '72 and chronicles his travels away from the gridiron.Csonka grew up befriending crows on his family's Ohio farm. As an All-American at Syracuse, he watched classmate Joe Biden wheel around his neighborhood in a green convertible. Csonka shot pool with Elvis at Graceland and evaded sniper fire over Vietnam when he visited troops. While filming the Alaskan adventure TV series he used to co-host, Csonka was stranded at sea overnight and signed a football for his crew's Coast Guard rescuer. He reminisces in "Head On" about the perfect season. Miami dominated with a smashmouth run game that minimized mistakes and monopolized possession. The legendary late coach Don Shula led the Dolphins to a 14-0 record and three playoff victories, which set the club on course to repeat as champions the following year.Csonka spoke to theScore about Shula's genius, tailgating with fans throughout the unbeaten run, the New England Patriots' brush with perfection, and the faint possibility that some team will run the table in a 17-game regular season. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.Courtesy of BenBella Books theScore: What, to you, is the legacy of the '72 Dolphins?Csonka: It's the only perfect team to ever happen in 100 years. To attain that perfection from Game 1 all the way through to the championship, even in the '30s and the '40s, it didn't happen. Since then, they've added more games, so it'll be even tougher. The power running game is where I lived and that's what we were famous for: being a ball-control offense, not giving the other team's offense a chance to have the ball much, and being able to take it away with a great defense. Those things added up to a perfect season. But the power running game has faded considerably. The position I played, fullback, is mostly nonexistent. The emphasis has been put on the passing game, and why not? From a spectator standpoint, you see a man throw a ball and a man run down the field and make a great catch - you're seeing it all at face value. The power running game and the intricacies of coordination between offensive linemen and running backs are hard to see from the stands, and probably even harder to understand if you're not an avid fan.L-R: Jim Kiick, Larry Csonka, and Mercury Morris in 1972. Focus On Sport / Getty ImagesYou and Mercury Morris made NFL history in 1972: you were the first teammates to rush for 1,000 yards apiece. What made you, Mercury, and Jim Kiick (who rushed for 521 yards) a great backfield trio? The relationship between Jim Kiick and Mercury Morris. Mercury and Jim were substituting every other play or so. It's hard to accept that you're not solely the first-team guy at (running back). But to split that and not get envious of each other - they both aspired to play more time than the other, but they understood each other's positions. It's not just having the talent on the field. It's also the collaboration between the players and the intelligence factor of knowing what to do and when to do it - and not letting your ego get in the way. That's what Jim Kiick and Mercury Morris did. They got to be quite close and ended up being great friends even after we retired. Right up till the time that Jim passed (in 2020), Mercury was calling on him two or three times a week. Why did Don Shula win more NFL games (347 between the regular season and playoffs) than anyone?Details. He called it "the winning edge." You not only use force on the opponent, but you use intelligence. You persist on the details. Nothing's too small to overlook. He knew we were playing (Super Bowl VII) in Los Angeles, and he wasn't familiar with that stadium. When we had Sunday off a week ahead of the game, he flew out in the middle of the night and sat in the stadium during the time that the game would be played. He charted the sun and where it was at - what the conditions were on the field in (relation to) where the sun was.He didn't want the sun in his receivers' eyes and certainly not in his quarterback's eyes. That's how minute Don Shula would get on the details. The worst thing you could do if you were playing on a Don Shula-coached team - believe me - was go through the motions. You knew it, but you were half there in practice. The very second he sensed that, he became a dominant head coach and would get in your face about it. He kept his practices short and to the point, and everyone was full attendance and full-throttle with your brain.Don Shula (left). Ross Lewis / Getty ImagesMiami's 52-0 win over New England in 1972 was an all-time beatdown. That was one of three shutouts the defense put up that season. Why was scoring on them so difficult? The intelligence factor. That was one of the smartest defenses, IQ-wise. When (Shula was hired) in '70, we took a series of tests. Physical tests: we all ran 40s for time and had a conditioning rigamarole that we had to go through. We had to lift weights and be documented on what we could lift. Then we took a basic intelligence examination to make sure we could all pass that. The absolute last team in the NFL (when Shula became head coach) was the Miami Dolphins. We were at the bottom of the pit. He did not expect to inherit as many smart and talented players as he got. He was greatly surprised and happy about it. Then he put a spectacular coaching staff together. The Dolphins were blown out in the coldest Super Bowl ever to end the 1971 season, then won the warmest Super Bowl ever the next year. How did losing Super Bowl VI prepare you to win Super Bowl VII?It goes back to the head coach. After we lost Super Bowl VI, he stood before us and said, "I want everyone to remember this moment."On the first day of camp when we got back, we watched the film of the previous Super Bowl. He stood before us again and said, "We're going to draw on this throughout the course of this year. We're going to remember this game and what the details were that we overlooked." Jim Kiick looked at me and winked his eye in the meeting and said, "Buckle up." (Laughs) I thought, "Well, he's demanded a lot since 1970. Now he wants us to double down."He said we'd use heat as an asset. We would practice longer in the hot part of the day. Go without water breaks. Do the things we had to do to make ourselves camel-like, so that we would have a winning edge in a heated game in the Orange Bowl. That's when I said something like, "That's if we don't die." He said, "My office after the meeting." (Laughs)I'd like to tell you that the '72 team was far above and a lot stronger than the other teams. It was not. It was better coached and it was more efficient. It carried a winning edge because it paid more attention to detail. The '72 Dolphins visited President Barack Obama at the White House in 2013. Alex Wong / Getty ImagesYou write that the '72 Dolphins' success unified a fractured city and changed Miami for the better. How so?When Don Shula came to the Dolphins, we were the losingest team in the NFL and were kind of second-class citizens in the city of Miami. Game day, if we got 25,000 or 30,000 people in an Orange Bowl that held 70,000, that was doing pretty good. When we started to win in 1970, the crowd started to get bigger and bigger. Finally, it was standing room only. The fans and the people were very excited because there was winning football happening right in their midst. Our fans were from all walks of life. They started to come in early and park in the same lot we did. We got to intermingle with the fans. After the game, they would stay late to the point that the Miami police would show up and say, "Folks, you've got to cut this out. We've got to lock up the lots."We talked to the mayor and the mayor decided to extend it so that we could stay there as late as we wanted. They would wait for us to come out of the locker room after getting a shower and dressing, and then we'd sit around and have hot dogs and cold beers and talk about the game with the fans. Tailgating got to be quite a thing. That tremendous combination of fans represented a community that was ethnically divided. The racial situation was at a crisis. In the early '70s, riots were going down in lots of places. I think it was a (process of) coming together with a concentration on sports, and finding out that we're all Americans and we all have something in common in the football arena. The Orange Bowl was a giant blending pot. When 15,000 of your fans come to the airport halfway through the season to welcome you back on Sunday night after you had a victory or close call on the road, you know you've got some avid support. They go from being fans to sort of like family. You start to know them by name. It was a different world and it was very celebrated. I think that helped an otherwise strained situation in Miami.David Tyree's helmet catch. Boston Globe / Boston Globe / GettyTom Coughlin, the retired NFL coach, was your college teammate at Syracuse in the 1960s. His New York Giants ruined the 2007 Patriots' would-be perfect season. What was on your mind throughout that season as New England came close to perfection?(Laughs) I'm sure you know exactly what was on my mind. I was hoping they wouldn't do it, and so were many of my teammates. That's why the '72 team lives in infamy. Each year, when some of the teams are 4-0, I start to hear from my '72 cohort. They start calling me on the phone, putting the hex on the team that looks like it might be going undefeated. The Patriots did a fabulous job. They went through that season and it got right down to the wire. (David) Tyree made that catch at the end of the game with the ball on the side of his helmet that made the difference. I jumped out of my chair in the rec room watching the TV set and about brained myself on the fan.It was a great, tense moment and it went the way I hoped it would go. Tom came through. I constantly remind him. We talk about it every once in a while.Several of your '72 teammates have posthumously been diagnosed with CTE. In the book, you reference a New York Times headline about their lives and deaths: "For NFL Perfection, a Steep Price." How have your teammates' health issues shaped how you view football today?I think (the NFL is) doing what they can do to lessen that. I think it's a much more safe game, because they've taken the direct hit - targeting - and put in rules to protect the players. The pads they utilize and the helmets - oh, my gosh, it's three times better than what it was 50 years ago. There's no question. They're very shock absorbent. They're doing everything they can do rule-wise to minimize that situation. It appears it's going a very positive way because of the rule changes and the quality of the equipment increasing. Hopefully, that will become a small factor. But I think in the days gone by, of course, it was a much larger factor. Some of the fellas, I believe, suffered early demises because of that.L-R: Bob Griese, Don Shula, and Earl Morrall. Bettmann / Getty ImagesThe '72 Dolphins bought a rocking chair for Earl Morrall when he was acquired to be the backup quarterback. Morrall was 38 but started most of the season after Bob Griese broke his leg. Where does that rank among all-time QB accomplishments - him stepping in to preserve the perfect season? There was a guy who was cut out to do that, and his name was Earl Morrall. He'd been to three or four teams before he stopped at our place. He'd worked with Shula in Baltimore backing up (Johnny) Unitas and stepped in and accomplished some very positive things. (Morrall won NFL MVP in 1968 when Unitas was limited by injury.)At that time, to play at that age and have been with three to five teams, we considered that grandpa-itis. We all got together and bought a rocking chair.Earl walked in and saw the rocking chair and absolutely loved it. When the joke was over and they were going to move it out, he wouldn't let them do it. He would sit there and put his feet up and look at his playbook and talk to us and hold court. Instead of shrugging that off and making a joke and letting it pass, he wore it like a badge of honor. There was no radio in Earl Morrall's helmet like there is today. He had to remember things. If he'd been paying attention, we were going to win the game. If he hadn't (paid attention) in the meetings - as a backup player, if he wasn't on the spot ready to go - we would have lost that game. But instead, we won.A lot of fans remember kicker Garo Yepremian's late gaffe in Super Bowl VII. What else should people know about Garo?We depended on him. He came through multiple times. He never really got into the practices with us. He was always over on the other field kicking the ball. Shula would stop every once in a while, look at him, and say, "Remember, if anything bad happens, fall on the ball." When it came to football savvy, I think Garo was very limited. When the ball bounced up into his hands (in the Super Bowl), he forgot about "fall on it" and he tried to throw it. For that, he's always remembered in that moment. But think about the longest game against Kansas City a year earlier. (On Christmas Day 1971, Miami edged the Chiefs 27-24 in double overtime in the divisional round.) People were going down on the field left and right, because we were beating the hell out of each other. Finally, Garo comes in and kicks the winning field goal.I've never been happier with any player than that moment with Garo Yepremian. Number one, I was glad it was over. Number two, I was glad we won. (Laughs) There were a lot of people on the other team who were just as happy it was over. It had to end. It went on for six full quarters. That's a lot of football, particularly against someone who's eyeball to eyeball with you as far as quality and stamina.L-R: Jim Kiick, Mercury Morris, Garo Yepremian, and Larry Little in 2008. Jim McIsaac / Getty Images"Head On" is the title of your memoir. What does that reflect about how you've approached life?Well, you approach life through the cards that were dealt to you.I grew up in the farm country of Ohio. I had brothers and sisters who were much older. I had a couple of brothers and sisters who were much younger. I was kind of on my own. I grew up with nature. I had a lot of friends who lived in the woods. (Laughs) I didn't really socialize well at first at school and was kind of an outcast. You just have to meet those things head-on. That became kind of a slogan.I was afraid of the dark when I was a tiny child. My grandmother stood me on a stool one night in the farmhouse. She was washing my hands and face before I went to bed. The other kids were in the other room watching TV with the curtains pulled. She said, "What's wrong?" I said, "I have to pee." She said, "Well, go outside and pee." I said, "I can't. It's dark. I'm afraid of the bogeyman."She said, "Oh, no one's told you, son?" She went and shut the curtains and came over. This is my grandmother, who I thought the world of. She said it and I believed it. She whispered in my ear, "You are the bogeyman." It changed my life right there.Little things that happen in the course of your life, you just have to adapt. You have to look at it a different way. Decide it's not going to be bad - it's going to be a good thing. You go with what happens. What would it take for another NFL team to go undefeated?I don't know and I hope they don't, either. (Laughs) I guard it jealously. It's got to be more than just wanting to play, get paid, and go to the Super Bowl if we can. It's got to be a dedication that's extremely deep. The team has to be smart enough to realize that. If you've got one player or two players who go weak one time, one play in that week, it can make the difference in the game. That is the edge: having 40 to 50 players who are that intense and that rehearsed and that serious about it. They want to win that bad.The circumstances that we came out of - (Shula) losing a Super Bowl and coming to us, then us getting to the Super Bowl and losing it - those were all motivational factors that gave us what we needed to sacrifice. You have to sacrifice your time and make sure that you're not going through the motions. That's a big order for 17 weeks in a row.Nick Faris is a features writer at theScore.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The first-rounder also adds value with his legs, as evidenced by his two rushing touchdowns in Week 4.Don't consider starting him this week against a Bills defense that's stifled opposing quarterbacks this season, but Pickett's long-term upside is worth chasing. Stash him now and let's see how he fares as the team's new starter over the next few weeks.Geno Smith, SeahawksNext UpRosteredFABat NO12%$1Smith is coming off a strong performance where he took advantage of a weak Lions defense and posted the second-most fantasy points among quarterbacks on the week. He's thrown for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns in each of his last two contests and has three multi-score games in four outings.More importantly, the Seahawks' coaching staff is letting him throw more. Moving into the middle of the pack in volume represents a huge improvement for a Seattle offense that finished 31st in pass attempts in 2021.His upcoming schedule is favorable as well, with five straight average or above-average matchups in terms of fantasy points allowed to QBs. Smith has morphed into a quality streamer or bye-week replacement.Jared Goff is just above the 50% rostered mark but would be the top pickup at quarterback if available.Risky streaming options: Ryan Tannehill at WAS (17% rostered), Zach Wilson vs. MIA (10% rostered), Teddy Bridgewater at NYJ (2% rostered)Risky streaming options (if healthy): Jameis Winston vs. SEA (36% rostered), Mac Jones vs. DET (19% rostered)Dart-throw streaming options: Jimmy Garoppolo at CAR (28% rostered), Marcus Mariota at TB (27% rostered)Dart-throw streaming options (if starter is out): Andy Dalton vs. SEA (2% rostered), Bailey Zappe vs. DET (0% rostered)2QB/Superflex considerations only: Daniel Jones at GB (23% rostered), Justin Fields at MIN (44% rostered), Jacoby Brissett vs. LAC (7% rostered), Davis Mills at JAX (5% rostered), Cooper Rush at LAR (6% rostered)Running backs Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyRachaad White, BuccaneersNext UpRosteredFABvs. ATL27%$14White has been the direct backup to Leonard Fournette in the opening month, but he saw his most extended action in Week 4's loss to the Chiefs. While some of the increased snaps were due to the lopsided score, it's promising to see him produce 56 yards on eight touches. The rookie also scored his first NFL touchdown and fumbled for the first time as a pro.Either way, he's entrenched as the Buccaneers' No. 2 back, and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has stated on multiple occasions that the team needs to get him more work. There's no reason White shouldn't be rostered in most leagues as a possible weekly flex depending on the matchups - and as a potential league-winner if Fournette gets hurt.Latavius Murray/Mike Boone, BroncosNext UpRosteredFABvs. IND1%/1%$14/$9Javonte Williams is out for the year with a torn ACL, meaning the Broncos' backfield touches are up for grabs. And now it's a three-man battle again after the Broncos added Murray off the Saints' practice squad. Before the season, Melvin Gordon would have been the most obvious candidate to take over. However, the 29-year-old stumbled out of the gate and has four fumbles in the first four games.Gordon has also been dealing with a neck injury that limited him in practices over the last two weeks. Whether it was the injury or the ball-security issues, something caused Broncos coaches to lean toward Boone after Williams left on Sunday.Boone played more snaps (19-10), ran more routes (12-5), had more targets (3-1), and matched Gordon in carries (3-3).With a short turnaround before their Week 5 encounter with Colts on Thursday night, it's possible Boone could once again have the edge. It's also possible Murray immediately becomes a factor, if Gordon's not 100% or if the coaching staff is truly frustrated with him.Boone and Murray need to be rostered everywhere until we get a clearer picture of how Denver plans to deploy its new backfield trio. But don't underestimate the 32-year-old Murray's ability to still produce when given volume like he did Sunday for the Saints (12 touches, 65 yards, TD).Tyler Allgeier/Damien Williams, FalconsNext UpRosteredFABat TB/16%/1%$9/9The Falcons placed Cordarrelle Patterson on injured reserve with the plan to recall him in four weeks once he's healed from the knee surgery he underwent Monday. With Patterson unable to handle a full workload in Week 4, rookie Allgeier stepped in and rushed 10 times for 84 yards while adding another 20 yards on his lone catch.Allgeier has another chance to audition for the starting job this week before the veteran Williams likely returns from IR in Week 6. The problem for Allgeier is he'll be matched up against a Bucs defense known for its strength against the run.Tampa is giving up the second-fewest fantasy points to running backs, making this a tough challenge. That's why Williams is just as enticing an add, even though you'll have to stash him for one more week. He was dominating backfield touches prior to getting hurt in the opener.Neither one of them should be viewed as more than an RB3/flex over the next month until Patterson is back.Raheem Mostert, Nyheim Hines, and Brian Robinson are just above the 50% rostered mark but should be rostered in most leagues.High-upside backups like Isiah Pacheco (19% rostered), Kenneth Walker (47% rostered), and Jaylen Warren (10% rostered) should be rostered in most leagues.Risky flex options: Mark Ingram vs. SEA (31% rostered), J.D. Javonte Williams out for season with torn ACL
Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL in Sunday's loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Nathaniel Hackett confirmed Monday. An MRI also revealed Williams has a torn LCL and posterior lateral corner, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Williams, who is Denver's leading rusher and second on the Broncos in catches, was carted off on the first play of the third quarter. The Broncos were reportedly fearful the 22-year-old was facing a major injury. The 2021 second-round pick was widely viewed as a potential breakout candidate after a strong rookie season. Williams had 903 rushing yards, 316 receiving yards, and seven total touchdowns while splitting time with Melvin Gordon last year.Williams had 204 rushing yards and 76 receiving yards on 16 catches this season. The veteran Gordon will now take the lead role in Denver, while Mike Boone will act as the primary backup. Gordon has struggled with turnovers, fumbling for the fourth time this season in the second quarter against the Raiders. The Broncos are also signing running back Latavius Murray off the New Orleans Saints' practice squad, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Murray played for the Saints on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings in London, racking up 57 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rivera: Robinson medically cleared, optimistic RB can play in Week 5
Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera announced Monday that running back Brian Robinson has been medically cleared and the team will open the three-week window to activate him to the main roster, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.Robinson landed on the non-football injury list after he was shot twice as the victim of an attempted robbery in August.Rivera added that he's optimistic the rookie running back will be available to play in Sunday's Week 5 game against the Tennessee Titans, per The Athletic's Ben Standig.A third-round pick, Robinson was expected to have a significant role in a Washington backfield that also includes Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic.Gibson has received the majority of the workload to start the season, though he's only averaging 3.3 yards per attempt on 53 carries. McKissic has carried the ball 17 times for 65 yards. The 1-3 Commanders opened their season with a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars but have dropped three straight since then.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Daniel Jones day-to-day with ankle injury
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is considered day-to-day with an ankle injury he suffered in Sunday's win over the Chicago Bears, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Jones is set for more tests but there's some optimism he'll be able to play in Week 5, Rapoport adds. The signal-caller exited Sunday's 20-12 victory with the ailment but was forced to re-enter the contest after backup Tyrod Taylor suffered a concussion. The Giants didn't attempt a pass following Jones' return.Head coach Brian Daboll said Monday that Jones is "feeling a little bit better," but the team is likely to work out a few passers amid the injuries to the quarterback room, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.New York has stormed to a 3-1 record to begin the 2022 campaign. Tua to miss Week 5 vs. Jets; no definite timeline for return
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa won't play in Week 5 against the New York Jets due to a concussion, head coach Mike McDaniel announced Monday."I can comfortably say that he's out for this game against the Jets," McDaniel told reporters, including the South Florida Sun Sentinel's David Furones. "It's too early to give a definite timeline."With Tagovailoa sidelined, Teddy Bridgewater is slated to make his first start of the season for the Dolphins. The Dolphins have been under heavy scrutiny over their handling of Tagovailoa in recent weeks. The signal-caller was stretchered off following the team's Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals after his head appeared to hit the field on a sack. He was then placed in the concussion protocol. The incident came only days after he briefly exited Miami's Week 3 game against the Buffalo Bills after he looked shaken following a big hit late in the second quarter. He missed only three plays and finished the game. The NFLPA and NFL are in the midst of an ongoing investigation into Tagovailoa's concussion clearance in Week 3. The players' union reportedly terminated the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant involved in the clearance after uncovering "several mistakes."In the wake of the Week 3 ordeal, the league and NFLPA have agreed to modify the league's concussion protocol. Changes reportedly include prohibiting players from returning to the game any time they demonstrate any instability. The Dolphins have remained adamant that Tagovailoa was only plagued by back and ankle injuries during the Week 3 meeting with the Bills.Miami opened the season with three consecutive wins before falling to the Bengals last Thursday.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Key takeaways and analysis from Week 4 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward.Chiefs get a little revenge Douglas P. DeFelice / Getty Images Sport / GettyAnother meeting with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay, the site of their matchup in Super Bowl LV, had to stir up some emotions about the opportunity the Chiefs let slip away. It wasn't quite complete revenge because the stakes weren't nearly as high, but Kansas City sure did make a statement in prime time.Patrick Mahomes was doing all his trademark things we know and love on Sunday night. Getting picked apart at all levels of the field has to be frustrating enough as is. But to have him beat you with hilarious plays like this, just when it seems like you've finally got him backed into a corner, is no doubt demoralizing. The combination of rare arm talent and creativity is like nothing we've ever seen. But the Chiefs' superstar quarterback shouldn't even be the big story from this night. When Mahomes wasn't dicing up the Bucs himself, spreading the love around his new-look receiving corps, Kansas City was serving up a reminder that the run game is also a legitimate force to be reckoned with.Going up against a Bucs team that entered play ranked fifth in run defense after finishes of first, first, and third over the last three seasons, the Chiefs racked up 189 rushing yards, the most allowed by a Bucs defense under Todd Bowles. Clyde Edwards-Helaire recorded 92 yards on the ground, averaging 4.8 yards per carry, while rookie Isiah Pacheco averaged 5.7 yards for a total of 63.The multi-faceted attack led the way to a 41-point output for the Chiefs, another record-worst for a Bowles defense in Tampa Bay. And their opponents just had no chance of keeping up, despite Brady and the Bucs' offense having a fairly productive night of their own.We don't spend much time talking about the running game in the modern football world, but as teams continue to favor two-high shells on defense, taking that extra man out of the box to limit big plays, it's crucial that offenses can punish them on the ground. The Chiefs, boasting arguably the NFL's most underrated offensive line, have that ability as a complement to the best quarterback on the planet. Defending that kind of balance is nearly impossible. They'll have their occasional stinker, like last week's loss to the Colts. But who doesn't? When they're on, they're really on. And there's not a whole lot you can do about it. Cris Collinsworth said it best on NBC's broadcast:"I'll tell ya. When Kansas City is on their game, I don't care who they're playing."Geno Smith! Gregory Shamus / Getty Images Sport / GettyGeno Hive, assemble.A big win over the Broncos in the Monday night opener will probably stand as the Seahawks' best moment of the season, no matter what happens from here. But it turns out their new quarterback outplaying their old one on a national stage was just the beginning.Smith was every bit up to the task in Sunday's barn burner against the Lions, completing 23-of-30 passes for 320 yards, two touchdowns, and no turnovers in leading Seattle to a 48-45 win. That marks the first time in his NFL career he's thrown for 300-plus yards in back-to-back games and puts him on pace for over 4,400 yards on the season. For reference, Wilson's career high is 4,219.Smith isn't sacrificing efficiency for the big yardage totals, either. His completion rate of 77.3% is a new NFL record for a quarterback's first four games of a season (minimum 125 attempts). As impressive as all the stats are, the trust the Seahawks have in their quarterback is perhaps even more notable. It shouldn't be lost on anyone that after years of internal strife with Russell Wilson over the structure of the offense and emphasizing the run game more than his future Hall of Fame quarterback was willing to accept, Pete Carroll is finally content to air it out with Smith running the show. Entering this week, the Seahawks ranked ninth in neutral pass rate.Maybe this has simply been matchup driven early in the season, and Carroll will soon return to his bread and butter. Perhaps he's more comfortable with a quarterback who, despite lacking Wilson's accolades, is more willing to attack the middle of the field. Or maybe there's some small element of the Seahawks giving Wilson the finger on his way out the door after a dramatic exit. OK, that last one is unlikely, but the apparent shift in philosophy despite a downgrade at quarterback is juicy either way.And while we're on the subject, let's not overlook just how disappointing it is that Smith had to wait this long for his second opportunity.
Falcons placing Patterson on IR
The Atlanta Falcons placed running back Cordarrelle Patterson on injured reserve due to a lingering knee injury, head coach Arthur Smith said Monday. The 31-year-old tailback is set to undergo a minor procedure with the expectation that he'll be back sooner rather than later, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. He'll miss at least four games before being eligible to return.Patterson left the Falcons' 23-20 win over the Cleveland Browns due to the ailment. He finished Sunday's contest with 38 rushing yards and a touchdown. The four-time Pro Bowler has rushed for 380 yards and three scores while averaging 5.9 yards per carry this season. Patterson is currently in his second campaign with the Falcons after racking up 1,166 scrimmage yards for 11 total scores last year.Atlanta is also missing rusher Damien Williams, who suffered a rib injury in the team's season opener. The Falcons promoted halfback Caleb Huntley to the active roster after he rushed for 56 yards and a score Sunday. Tyler Allgeier also helped spur Atlanta's rushing attack. The 2-2 Falcons will take on the 2-2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Colts' Taylor could play in TNF after negative tests on ankle
Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has a chance to play Thursday night against the Denver Broncos after tests on his injured ankle came back negative, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Taylor exited Sunday's loss to the Tennessee Titans in the fourth quarter due to the injury and didn't return. He revealed postgame that he "tweaked" his ankle but was "feeling good," according to Charlie Clifford of WISH-TV.The 23-year-old has been a vital part of the Colts' offense since being selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Taylor led the league in rushing yards (1,811) and rushing touchdowns (18) last season.Through four games in 2022, Taylor has tallied 328 yards, though his four yards per career would rank as a career low.No Colts player other than Taylor has recorded more than 10 rushing attempts thus far, with quarterback Matt Ryan logging nine and Nyheim Hines notching eight. The Colts have limped out of the gate to start the season, winning just one of their first four games. The franchise will also be without star linebacker Shaquille Leonard on Thursday due to a concussion.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. MNF best bets: Are the 49ers still a valuable bet vs. the Rams?
Each Monday, we'll finish off the week that was in the NFL with a look at value spots in the remaining game under one condition: you promise not to chase. Whether Sunday provided a boost to the accounts or left a little to be desired, Monday Night Football provides an opportunity to show responsibility in your betting, as there will always be another wild Sunday to get lost in.The Cardinals and Seahawks are both 2-2, so we're trying not to count them out when we say that this is the heavyweight tilt of the NFC West. After all, the Rams and 49ers met in three hotly-contested games last season - the last one deciding who would go to the Super Bowl. While San Francisco didn't win the NFC title game, it did cover as a 3.5-point road 'dog, making the 49ers 3-0 against the spread in games against the Rams last year. In a league that comes down to matchups and scheme as often as it does the talent of the players on the field, are the 49ers still a valuable bet against the Rams?Rams @ 49ers (-1.5, 43)It wasn't that long ago that we dove into this matchup before the NFC Championship Game, giving you all the reasons that the 49ers - under Kyle Shanahan - have had success against Sean McVay's Rams. Essentially, as long as Jimmy Garoppolo starts, the 49ers have been able to put the Rams' defense in a bind.On Monday night, San Francisco will be missing star left tackle Trent Williams. However, while alleviating interior pressure created by Aaron Donald is the No. 1 priority against the Rams, Shanahan has been able to do that with scheme even when Williams has missed this matchup in the past. The 49ers' quick passing and trap-blocking counter running game can take some of the pressure off the offensive line, especially with the departure of Von Miller.Since last year, the Rams have lost some depth on offense, while the 49ers have managed to build up their secondary - particularly at cornerback. This provides them a better chance at giving Cooper Kupp the appropriate attention while also not letting any of the other route-runners find free space too often. At 3.4 yards per carry, the Rams aren't going to threaten San Francisco on the ground, either. The Garoppolo-Shanahan combo improves to 7-0 in the regular season against the Rams, but we'll pay a little extra to avoid the small chance the game lands San Francisco by one.Pick: 49ers moneyline (-120)Cam Akers under 43.5 rushing yards (-115)The last we saw Akers, he was fumbling short of the goal line in Arizona. The Cardinals weren't able to make the Rams pay, but maybe McVay's faith in Akers is wavering. Darrell Henderson is still in the mix, averaging more yards per carry. In the NFC title game, Akers averaged 3.7 yards per carry, while the leading rusher in their regular season matchups between the two teams didn't go over this total, either. A potential late-game, negative game script wouldn't give Akers the extra attempts needed to go over, and who knows if he'd be in line for those carries with the Rams in the lead anyway.Jeff Wilson Jr. over 67.5 rushing + receiving yards (-115)We found a winner last Monday night by removing the worry about whether a running back was gaining yards via the run or the pass. We'll do the same this week with Wilson. The 49ers may need to keep Kyle Juszczyk and their tight ends in to block more often to help the offensive line, so Wilson could see more targets in the short passing game to go with the carries he'll get as the tailback atop the depth chart.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams is feared to have suffered a serious knee injury, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Williams was hurt on a tackle by Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby in the third quarter of Denver's 32-23 loss on Sunday. He was carted to the locker room before being officially ruled out minutes later. He was on crutches after the contest, according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN.Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett said postgame that Williams and pass-rusher Randy Gregory will get MRIs on Monday. Julio, Godwin active for SNF vs. Chiefs
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers Julio Jones and Chris Godwin are active for Sunday night's matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, the team announced.Godwin has been dealing with a hamstring injury while Jones has been bothered by a knee issue. Neither wideout has suited up since Week 1.Jones was a limited participant in practice throughout the week while Godwin practiced in a limited capacity on Wednesday and Friday.Offensive tackle Donovan Smith and wideout Russell Gage, who were both listed as questionable, are also active. The Bucs' receiving corps has been thinned in recent weeks as a result of Godwin's and Jones' injuries. Mike Evans also missed last week's loss to the Green Bay Packers due to a one-game suspension.Evans leads the club with 132 receiving yards while Gage is slightly behind with 128 yards of his own. Jets' late rally spoils Pickett's NFL debut
The Pittsburgh Steelers turned to first-round rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett to replace Mitch Trubisky for the second half of Sunday's 24-20 loss against the New York Jets.Pittsburgh inserted Pickett after Trubisky struggled to spark the offense, leaving the Steelers trailing 10-6 at halftime. The veteran quarterback completed 7 of 13 pass attempts for 84 yards with one interception and was sacked three times.Pickett, 24, had his first pass attempt intercepted but engineered two scoring drives in the second half. The rookie capped both drives with a rushing touchdown. He led the Steelers to a 20-10 lead before New York stormed back with 14 unanswered points to win. Zach Wilson put together a 10-play, 65-yard drive that culminated in Breece Hall's game-winning touchdown with 16 seconds remaining.Pickett finished the game with 10 completions on 13 attempts for 120 yards with three interceptions and no passing touchdowns.Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin faced numerous questions about a potential move to the rookie following Pittsburgh's Thursday Night Football loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 3. Tomlin had said he was "definitely" not considering a change at quarterback or play-caller duties.Selected 20th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Pickett impressed in the preseason with 261 yards and three touchdowns to zero interceptions.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Afterward, Peters threw his helmet, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley.Harbaugh downplayed the incident postgame."We're on the same page," the coach said, according to Hensley. "We have an honest relationship. I love Marcus Peters. I hope he still loves me."The Ravens blew a 20-3 lead against the Bills, who scored 20 unanswered points to clinch the 23-20 victory. Buffalo kicker Tyler Bass nailed the walk-off field goal minutes after Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was intercepted on a fourth-and-goal by safety Jordan Poyer. Harbaugh decided to go for it on fourth down at Buffalo's 2-yard line instead of kicking a short field goal to take a three-point lead with under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter."I felt like it gave us the best chance to win the game," Harbaugh said of his controversial decision, per Hensley.Baltimore is just the second team in NFL history to lose multiple times after leading by at least 17 points within its first four games. NFL, NFLPA to modify concussion protocol to enhance player safety
The NFL and players' association have agreed to modify the league's concussion protocol to enhance player safety, the union announced in a statement Saturday."We anticipate changes to the protocol being made in the coming days based on what has been learned thus far in the review process," the statement read. The changes haven't been officially announced yet, but the league and union are expected to agree to new protocols in which a player won't be allowed to return to the game any time they demonstrate any instability, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. That change could go into effect as early as Week 5, Schefter notes. The NFL and NFLPA also announced that their investigation into the application of the concussion protocol involving Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa remains ongoing. The investigation began after Tagovailoa briefly exited in Miami's Week 3 game against the Buffalo Bills after he got up stumbling following a big hit late in the second quarter. He returned to the game following halftime. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said afterward that the signal-caller didn't suffer a concussion, adding that a back injury caused him to stumble.Tagovailoa was then stretchered off the field during Thursday's contest versus the Cincinnati Bengals due to head and neck injuries after his head appeared to hit the turf as he took a sack. Report: NFLPA fires neurotrauma consultant involved in Tua's Week 3 clearance
The NFL Players Association has exercised its prerogative to terminate the unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant involved in clearing quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to return to play in the Miami Dolphins' Week 3 game against the Buffalo Bills, reports Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. The union, which opened an investigation into the situation following the contest, made the decision after uncovering "several mistakes" by the consultant, a source told Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.Additional factors in the doctor's termination included a failure to understand his role as an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant and hostility during the investigation process, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.Tagovailoa briefly exited in Week 3 after taking a big hit from Bills linebacker Matt Milano and stumbling after getting to his feet. He missed just three plays before reentering the game.Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that the injury scare stemmed from a back ailment and that the young signal-caller was not in concussion protocol.Days later, Tagovailoa was stretchered off the field after his head appeared to hit the turf following a sack in the second quarter of the Dolphins' Week 5 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football. McDaniel said postgame that Tagovailoa had entered concussion protocol, but he remained adamant that the quarterback had not suffered a head injury against Buffalo.Tagovailoa was briefly hospitalized in Cincinnati before flying back to Miami with his team after Thursday's game. The 24-year-old issued a statement Friday thanking the Dolphins for the "support and care" he received after the incident. The NFLPA's investigation into Tagovailoa's Week 3 clearance is ongoing.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 4 player props: Riding the reliable
Whoops. As expected, Mac Jones threw it all over the Ravens last week, but, as we feared, he never actually connected in the end zone. He even ran one in! Between that bit of misfortune and Derrick Henry barely dragging his total across the line, it was a second straight 5-5 week. Mitigated by some plus-money plays, we dropped just 0.15 units, moving to 17-13 (+3.75 units) on the season.Alvin Kamara over 26.5 receiving yards (-115)The good folks at theScore Bet wouldn't make me an "Andy Dalton check-down" total, so this will have to suffice. Dalton kept Cowboy tight ends fed during his season in Dallas, but the Saints' short passing game is better when it runs through Kamara. The Vikings have given up the seventh-most receiving yards to running backs this campaign. Whether it's on volume or a big play, Kamara clears this total for the first time this season.Lamar Jackson over 231.5 passing yards (-115)Speaking of Dalton, the MVP of the league through three weeks is being lined like he's Dalton. Maybe some potentially sloppy weather is depressing this total. However, a game script that could feature big plays and quick scoring drives should create ample opportunity for Jackson to put up passing yards against the Bills' banged-up secondary.Khalil Herbert over 75.5 rushing yards (-115)If you read this week's look at the NFL futures markets, you know we've got some low-risk/high-reward hopes for Herbert. The little-known tailback is getting the bulk of the workload this week with David Montgomery out. That's a timely opportunity for him against a porous Giants run defense that was gashed Monday night. It's Herbert's time to shine, and he will Sunday.Jacoby Brissett under 29.5 pass attempts (-110)This bet doesn't really have anything to do with Brissett. It's more about the Browns finally getting a soft run defense in front of them. Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt should share a ton of carries, but their lines of 89.5 and 43.5 rushing yards, respectively, are too rich for my blood. Instead, we'll bet that Brissett either doesn't need to do much, or his play-action attempts gain big yardage. Either way, it'll keep his total passing attempts down.Travis Etienne over 2.5 receptions (-110)You don't get extra money for finding a new bet, so we'll continue incorporating Etienne as long as the Jaguars include him in the passing game. Jacksonville doesn't have the offensive line to take the sting out of the Eagles' pass rush, so it'll need to keep a tight end in the game to block. And the quick throws should go to Etienne.Garrett Wilson over 45.5 receiving yards (-115)Zach Wilson is back. You might think there will be a change in who gets the targets in the Jets' offense given that slot receiver Braxton Berrios had the most receiving yards in five of the 12 full games Zach played last season. However, Garrett Wilson has been lining up frequently in the slot, opening him up to use his elusiveness to get a free release in man coverage. Wherever he lines up, look for Wilson-to-Wilson to be a thing in Zach's season debut.Jonathan Taylor under 95.5 rushing yards (-115)How much credence do you put into three games? The Titans have allowed a league-worst 5.8 yards per carry this season, but most of that stems from getting burned by Saquon Barkley in Week 1. Tennessee placed top five in stopping the run in 2021 and held Taylor to just 64 and 70 yards in its two meetings against the Colts during the running back's career year.Jared Goff under 253.5 passing yards (-115)The Lions' lineup will be missing 330 receiving yards on Sunday, and that's before Detroit's ruled anyone out other than Amon-Ra St. Brown and D'Andre Swift. And I'm supposed to believe that won't affect Goff's yardage totals? Even if we think the Seahawks are live to win this game, Detroit is still favored - suggesting they're more likely to be in a run-first game state.Demarcus Lawrence over 0.5 sacks (-130)Carson Wentz has been sacked an outrageous five times per game this season. Meanwhile, the Cowboys used Micah Parsons' presence to create opportunities for others on Dallas' defensive line last week, and Demarcus Lawrence found himself with three sacks. We'll put our 1-0 sack prop record on the line here.Russell Wilson under 242.5 passing yards (-115)We might be playing the bottom of the market here, but the only time Wilson has gone over this total is in Week 1. That night in Seattle was a perfect storm of circumstances with the Broncos trailing throughout and a soft pass defense. This game should be close, and Denver appears aware that its running game gives it the best chance to win, while a desperate Raiders team will focus on Wilson on defense.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Garrett's Porsche appeared to have flipped several times in the accident on a rural road. The Browns have started the season 2-1, with Garrett chipping in three sacks and four tackles for a loss.Pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney is also questionable for the Week 4 matchup with an ankle injury. Clowney missed the team's previous game due to the ailment.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Schultz: Russell Wilson's magic seems to have disappeared
Russell Wilson is a future Hall of Famer with enough credentials to make a case as one of the 10 greatest quarterbacks ever. When Wilson, 33, was traded to the Broncos back in March, it symbolized the beginning of a new era in Denver. For the first time since Peyton Manning, the Broncos had a transcendent, franchise quarterback. The organization was able to pair Wilson with newly hired head coach Nathaniel Hackett. He was widely viewed as a true up-and-comer who drew rave reviews from Aaron Rodgers during their tenure together in Green Bay.Through three weeks, however, Wilson has looked anything but the dominant signal-caller we're accustomed to seeing, while Hackett has looked like a fish out of water. There was perhaps no better example than Week 1 on Monday Night Football in Wilson's return to Seattle."They have terrible clock management," Mike Tannenbaum, the former Jets and Dolphins GM, told theScore.

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones will miss Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers due to an ankle injury.Veteran signal-caller Brian Hoyer will start the Week 4 matchup.Jones suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter against the Baltimore Ravens. The 24-year-old attended practice throughout the week but didn't participate in any drills. His ailment was initially considered a "pretty severe" high ankle sprain.New England is off to a 1-2 start with Jones under center. Despite passing for 321 yards against Baltimore, he also tossed three interceptions. The 2021 Pro Bowler has thrown just two touchdowns compared to five interceptions in his second campaign.Hoyer will make his 40th career start Sunday. He appeared in 75 total games over 14 years in the league. Head coach Bill Belichick doesn't envision the offensive strategy changing with Jones sidelined."Not too much," he said, according to Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal. Harbaugh questions handling of Tua's injuries: 'I couldn't believe what I saw'
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh expressed disbelief Friday over how the Miami Dolphins managed Tua Tagovailoa's injuries over the past two games."I couldn't believe what I saw last night," Harbaugh said. "I couldn't believe what I saw last Sunday. It was just something that was astonishing to see. I've been coaching for 40 years now, college in the NFL ... and I've never seen anything like it before. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I really appreciate our doctors. I appreciate our owner (Steve Bisciotti)."Tagovailoa was stretched off the field during Thursday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals after a scary hit in the second quarter. He was taken to the hospital and placed in concussion protocol before flying back to Miami with the team. The incident came just four days after concerns that Tagovailoa suffered a head injury in a win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 3. The 24-year-old appeared to hit his head on the turf following a hit in the second quarter and stumbled when he got back to his feet. However, Tagovailoa was cleared after a concussion check and returned following halftime to lead Miami to victory. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Tagovailoa was dealing with a back injury that caused him to stumble.Harbaugh faced a similar situation in 2020 when Lamar Jackson was diagnosed with a concussion after hitting his head on the ground during a playoff game against the Buffalo Bills. The Ravens trailed 17-3 at the time of Jackson's injury and went on to lose the game. Many players criticized the Dolphins and NFL after Tagovailoa was allowed back into Sunday's contest. The criticism only got louder after his injury Thursday. The NFL Players Association initiated an investigation into the handling of Tagovailoa's concussion check during the Bills game. The league said Wednesday that there's no indication the Dolphins violated protocol.NFLPA president JC Tretter said Friday that the system and policies failed Tagovailoa. He also called for changes to the concussion protocol."We are all outraged by what we have seen the last several days and scared for the safety of one of our brothers," said Tretter. "What everyone saw both Sunday and last night were 'no-go' symptoms within our concussion protocols. The protocols exist to protect the player, and that is why we initiated an investigation."Our job as the NFLPA is to take every possible measure to get the facts and hold those responsible accountable. We need to figure out how and why the decisions were made last Sunday to allow a player with a 'no-go' symptom back on the field."McDaniel defended the decision to start Tagovailoa against the Bengals."I have 100% conviction in our process regarding our players," said McDaniel on Friday, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. "This is a player-friendly organization. ... There was no medical indication from all resources there was anything regarding the head."The head coach said he "wouldn't have been able to live" with himself if he put the quarterback on the field prematurely following a head injury.Tagovailoa was in "good spirits" after returning to his home in South Florida on Friday, a source told ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques. The signal-caller will reportedly undergo an MRI after initial tests showed no structural damage.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
