DeSean Jackson signing with Ravens for 15th season
The Baltimore Ravens are signing veteran wide receiver DeSean Jackson to their practice squad, his agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Jackson visited the Ravens for a free-agent visit Tuesday prior to the signing. He previously mentioned Baltimore as one of his top three potential destinations, along with the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles. The 35-year-old split last season between the Los Angeles Rams and Las Vegas Raiders. He suited up for 16 total games, catching 20 passes for 454 yards and two touchdowns.Jackson built a reputation throughout his time in the NFL for his speed and downfield ability. He's averaged 17.6 yards per reception over his career and has led the league in that category on four occasions.Rashod Bateman and Devin Duvernay headline the Ravens' receiving corps. Bateman has recorded 243 receiving yards, while Duvernay has added 240 yards of his own. No other wide receiver on the team has eclipsed 100 yards.Baltimore heads into its Week 7 meeting against the Cleveland Browns with a 3-3 record.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Wilson day-to-day with hamstring injury, pushing to play Week 7
Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is considered day-to-day after suffering a hamstring injury in Monday night's overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Wilson, who's also nursing a shoulder ailment, is pushing to play Sunday against the New York Jets, Rapoport adds. It's unclear when the 33-year-old, who played every offensive snap Monday, sustained the injury. He enjoyed a hot start against the Chargers by completing his first 10 passes of the game but struggled in the second half, finishing the night with 188 yards and one touchdown on 15-for-28 passing. The loss dropped Denver to 2-4. The Broncos, who acquired Wilson in a blockbuster offseason trade with the Seattle Seahawks, have struggled offensively this season, ranking dead last with only 15.2 points scored per contest.Wilson, who's passed for only five touchdowns against three picks this year, also underwent a procedure to relieve discomfort near his throwing shoulder after Thursday Night Football in Week 5.Brett Rypien is the only other quarterback on Denver's current active roster.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL, Amazon to stream Black Friday game in 2023
Amazon and the NFL announced Tuesday that Prime Video will exclusively stream a newly scheduled Black Friday game beginning in 2023.The first-ever Black Friday game will kick off Nov. 24, 2023, with an anticipated 3 p.m. ET start time. The participating teams will be announced once the '23 regular-season schedule is released.Conversations regarding an additional holiday-weekend matchup gained steam after Amazon purchased the broadcast rights to Thursday Night Football last year. The broadcast will expand to 16 games next season."Thursday Night Football has already proven tremendously successful on Prime Video, delivering millions of viewers every week, and we're excited to expand our relationship with the NFL with the inaugural Black Friday game, starting next year," said Jay Marine, Prime Video's global head of sports.Prime Video is averaging 10.8 million viewers for TNF through its first five games.Franchise owners signed off on allowing the NFL to schedule two more teams for a second short-week game earlier this year. The league increased its Thanksgiving Day slate from two to three games in 2006."We are gratified by the NFL's support and by the incredible reaction we've had from viewers to our broadcast, and are thrilled to give fans another game with Al, Kirk, Kaylee, and the entire TNF crew on Black Friday in 2023," said Marie Donoghue, vice president of Amazon's Global Sports Video.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 6 betting takeaways: Where oddsmakers rate the teams
If you took your spreadsheet with the power-rated list of teams, flipped it over, and read it upside down, you probably had pretty solid betting results in Week 6.A truckload of upsets in the early window on Sunday saw more wins for the New York teams, an opportunistic Falcons squad, and a stunner by the Steelers. Then the Seahawks got back on track in a thoroughly weird game with the Cardinals. Maybe it's because the completion of Week 6 wraps up the first third of the season, but just about every upset feels like a bigger deal than a one-game hiccup. How ratings workWe look at the betting market's assessment of each team based on the closing lines from the previous week's games and then we estimate what each club is capable of going forward. The "rating" column is an educated guess at the oddsmakers' rating to create a point spread before their most recent game. The number itself represents the percentage chance that a team beats an average opponent on a neutral field. The range column is my evaluation of each team's potential after seeing them play this past week. Obviously, clubs don't perform at the same level every week; they play within a range. It's our job as handicappers to predict how they'll perform based on things like the situation, on-field matchups, and roster/injury issues. The earlier it is in the season, the wider a team's range may be.Rating before Week 6 kickoffTEAMRATINGRANGEBills8570-85Chiefs7065-85Buccaneers6960-80Eagles6550-75Rams6255-75Ravens6255-70Packers6055-7549ers5950-75Bengals5950-70Chargers5855-75Vikings5645-70Raiders5440-60Cardinals5130-60Browns4840-65Cowboys4840-70Broncos4545-65Colts4545-65Jaguars4530-50Patriots4540-60Titans4440-60Saints4140-60Lions4130-50Jets4125-40Falcons4130-50Commanders3930-50Giants3725-50Dolphins3645-70Seahawks3325-40Bears3230-45Panthers3125-45Steelers3035-50Texans2825-40Notable Week 6 resultsBy making the Bills 3-point favorites at Kansas City against the consensus second-best team in the NFL, oddsmakers widened the gap between top-rated Buffalo and the Chiefs. Was this fair? On one hand, the Bills' 4-point win covered all numbers, but on the other hand, the Chiefs were covering the spread for 59 minutes.Arguably more interesting - who's third? The Buccaneers got as high as 10-point road favorites, but that may have had more to do with the market discounting the Steelers due to all their defensive injuries. Regardless, that was an obvious two-way overreaction, and the Bucs should drop again while the Steelers float back up.The Eagles' rating hasn't moved in a while, and I'm sure Philly fans aren't thrilled about that, even if we had a feeling they might be undefeated at this point. They'll have to take solace in having a really good record thanks to a pretty comfortable schedule. Still, it's undeniable that, since we put the Eagles at 65/100, their games have hovered around the point spread. We'll see how, if at all, oddsmakers change their rating after their bye week. The Packers have relinquished any claim to being a top team. Oddsmakers were on this last week, adjusting Green Bay down and the Jets up even before New York's upset win - creating a spread of around a touchdown. The crazy thing is, they might need to tighten the two even further.A high volume of injuries affected the 49ers' and Saints' ratings, whereas Skylar Thompson starting affected opinion on the Dolphins. With 458 yards for Miami and 399 yards for New Orleans, both teams should have covered, but in a 30-second span, Jaylen Waddle fumbled and Tyrann Mathieu blew a tackle. The Cardinals play the Saints on Thursday night, and oddsmakers appear lost when it comes to Arizona after giving the team a boost last week that never made much sense. With injuries still an issue for the Saints and the Cardinals getting Kyler Murray's favorite target back, these teams appear closer to even.Speaking of even ratings, the closing line of around -1.5 in Indianapolis suggested the Jaguars and Colts are virtually the same, and their game didn't disprove that theory. The Patriots' status as underdogs in Cleveland suggested they're a below-average team, which is just flat wrong. New England should see a big boost back to where it was last season as a playoff-caliber team. The Texans didn't play last week, and if they're still considered the worst team in the league after their bye - with a 4-1 record ATS - then that's a mistake, mainly because the Panthers exist. A team that showed no ability on offense, Carolina also demonstrated more (misdirected) passion off the field than on it against the Rams, who were seemingly trying to give that game away.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Tomlin sticking with Pickett as starting QB if cleared
Rookie Kenny Pickett will remain the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback, head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday. The 24-year-old passer remains in the concussion protocol but isn't expected to be limited in practice ahead of Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins."If he's cleared to play, he'll play," Tomlin said."We're not going to blow in the wind. We're going to be somewhat steady," Tomlin said when asked about the decision to stick with Pickett as the starter. The quarterback left last weekend's 20-18 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he was pushed to the ground by linebacker Devin White. Pickett stayed on the ground for several seconds before getting up, and he was evaluated on the sidelines and then taken to the locker room. The 20th overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft completed 11 of his 18 pass attempts for 67 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game. Mitch Trubisky filled in for Pickett and threw for 144 yards and a score to lift Pittsburgh to its second win of the season.Trubisky was benched in favor of Pickett at halftime of the team's Week 4 loss to the New York Jets. After some enigmatic starts by the veteran to begin the season, the Steelers opted to let the rookie take the reins of the offense.Pickett is 1-1 as a starter. The Pitt alum has passed for 514 yards and one touchdown with a 66.3% completion rate. He's also added two rushing scores.Meanwhile, the Steelers anticipate removing cornerback Levi Wallace and tight end Pat Freiermuth from concussion protocol later this week.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Commanders to start Heinicke at QB vs. Packers
Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke will start Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers, head coach Ron Rivera announced Tuesday.Rookie Sam Howell, whom the Commanders drafted in the fifth round, will serve as Heinicke's backup."We think (Howell) is on track, but Taylor right now gives us the best opportunity to be successful," Rivera said Tuesday, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post.Washington was forced to make a change under center after Carson Wentz fractured the ring finger of his throwing hand last week. Wentz, who posted a 2-4 record to begin the season, is reportedly expected to miss four-to-six weeks.Heinicke appeared in 16 games with Washington last year, including 15 starts. He completed 65% of his passes for 3,419 yards and 20 touchdowns against 15 interceptions while posting a 7-8 record. He also rushed for 330 yards and one score. The Commanders' offense has struggled in 2022, ranking only 29th in the NFL with 17 points per game.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Broncos' Gordon 'hurt' by benching in MNF loss to Chargers
Running back Melvin Gordon didn't get an opportunity to make much of an impact in the Denver Broncos' 19-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday. The two-time Pro Bowl tailback was stuck to the sideline for the majority of the contest, including overtime, and didn't see the field after the second quarter.Gordon didn't shy away postgame from expressing his disappointment with his lack of playing time against the club he spent the first five years of his career with."I'm not gonna lie. It hurt a little today watching," he said, according to NFL Network's Bridget Condon. "You know, (the Chargers) threw up the little clown logo on my face (on the video board), and I noticed it all. It sucked. It sucked knowing that I wasn't able to do anything about it - go out there and help my team win.""It was a close game. Felt like I could've helped make a difference. But apparently not," he added. The Broncos gave the majority of the work to Latavius Murray, who rushed for 66 yards on 15 carries. Backup Mike Boone received 18 snaps, while Gordon had just eight.Head coach Nathaniel Hackett dismissed the idea that injury played a factor in the benching. "Not that I know of, no," he said.Gordon was expected to see an increased role following a season-ending injury to Javonte Williams. The 29-year-old has rushed for 201 yards and one touchdown on 55 carries this season. He also has 11 catches for 98 receiving yards.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Power Rankings - Week 7
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors.1. Philadelphia Eagles (6-0) Mitchell Leff / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 1What else is there to say about the Eagles? This is the most balanced team in football. And with a schedule that posts few challenges from here on out, there's no telling how many wins Philly will put up.2. Buffalo Bills (5-1)Previous Rank: 3Josh Allen might be the Chiefs' kryptonite. After watching his season end in heartbreak at Arrowhead Stadium last campaign, Allen avenged the playoff loss with a flawless 300-plus-yard performance and three touchdowns.3. Kansas City Chiefs (4-2)Previous Rank: 2Unlike last campaign's postseason meeting, Patrick Mahomes didn't have enough heroics left in the bag to pull out a win against the red-hot Bills. There's no shame in falling to the AFC's best, but the loss could have major implications later in the season.4. Dallas Cowboys (4-2)Previous Rank: 4The Cowboys hang on to their top-five spot because winning four games with Cooper Rush is more than enough to sell us on just how good this team is. Dak Prescott's impending return could help Dallas truly take off.5. New York Giants (5-1) Bradley Collyer - PA Images / PA Images / GettyPrevious Rank: 8Forget what the team looks like on paper. It's about time we all start believing in the Giants. Brian Daboll is getting the most out of an underwhelming roster and putting together one of the most impressive early coaching performances we've ever seen.6. Minnesota Vikings (5-1)Previous Rank: 9The only loss the Vikings have sustained this year came against the still-undefeated Eagles in Week 2. While they haven't all been the cleanest of victories, rookie head coach Kevin O'Connell and Co. are finding ways to win.7. Baltimore Ravens (3-3)Previous Rank: 7Fourth-quarter collapses have become synonymous with the Ravens. Blowing a 10-point lead Sunday to the Giants not only stings, but it drops Baltimore to a pedestrian .500 in the standings.8. Los Angeles Chargers (4-2)Previous Rank: 12Bruised and battered, the Chargers have found a way to limp to 4-2. They've had numerous close calls - including a sluggish win against the Broncos on Monday night - but Los Angeles has continued to produce victories.9. San Francisco 49ers (3-3)Previous Rank: 5The 49ers are dealing with a ton of injuries right now, and they're coming off a bad loss to the Falcons. However, San Francisco has a complete roster with a proven coaching staff. The 49ers will look to get healthy before taking on the Chiefs, Rams, and Chargers in their next three contests.10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-3) Justin K. Aller / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 6Tom Brady isn't the problem. But as we saw in an embarrassing loss to the Steelers, the Bucs' offense isn't clicking. Whether the answer is a schematic adjustment or perhaps a trade deadline addition, this unit has to get on track soon.11. Cincinnati Bengals (3-3)Previous Rank: 14After starting the year 0-2, the Bengals have won three of their last four. The even better news is that Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase seem to be recapturing the chemistry that carried them to a Super Bowl appearance last season.12. Los Angeles Rams (3-3)Previous Rank: 13The reigning Super Bowl champs have struggled to find consistency this year, but they're still tied for the division lead alongside the 49ers and Seahawks. The Rams face those 49ers in Week 7 for the division's top spot.13. Miami Dolphins (3-3)Previous Rank: 11It's been a roller-coaster ride for the Dolphins, who are amid a three-game slide. Thankfully, Tua Tagovailoa appears ready to return in Week 7 after missing the last two games with a concussion.14. Atlanta Falcons (3-3)Previous Rank: 17The Falcons running the ball right at an outstanding 49ers defense all day long en route to a win stands as one of the most impressive results of the season thus far. Arthur Smith has quietly put together the kind of ground game that few teams around the league are built to stop.15. New York Jets (4-2) Stacy Revere / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 20A win over the Packers on Sunday might just signal that the Jets are for real. A stingy defense and a tough ground game have lifted the club to a three-game winning streak. Rookie running back Breece Hall has racked up 279 yards on the ground over that span.16. Tennessee Titans (3-2)Previous Rank: 15While their wins haven't always been pretty, the Titans exit the bye week in the mix for the top spot in an otherwise weak AFC South. A crucial matchup against the Colts awaits them.17. Green Bay Packers (3-3)Previous Rank: 10Losing to the Giants and Jets the last two weeks isn't a great look for a team that entered the season with lofty aspirations. Reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers will look to right the ship against the Commanders in Week 7 as the Packers try to gain on the Vikings in the NFC North standings.18. Seattle Seahawks (3-3)Previous Rank: 19Many doubted the Seahawks entering the year, but they continue to play scrappy football and remain competitive. Their schedule doesn't get much easier moving forward, so we'll see if they can continue overachieving.19. Indianapolis Colts (3-2-1)Previous Rank: 22There's the Matt Ryan that the Colts had been looking for. The veteran passer enjoyed his best performance of the season Sunday, torching the Jaguars for 389 yards and three scores.20. New England Patriots (3-3) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 24No Mac Jones, no problem. The Patriots are finding ways to win even with Bailey Zappe under center. The key to the rookie quarterback's success? His efficiency. He's tossed four touchdowns to one interception.21. New Orleans Saints (2-4)Previous Rank: 16New Orleans' running game has really started to put it together lately, totaling 463 yards in the last two contests. The problem, as we saw in a disappointing loss to the Bengals, is that the defense is playing nowhere near the level we've come to expect.22. Arizona Cardinals (2-4)Previous Rank: 18DeAndre Hopkins returns in Week 7, and not a moment too soon. The Cardinals sit alone at the bottom of the NFC West and need to start racking up wins if they want to make a playoff push.23. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-4)Previous Rank: 21The Jaguars have hit a crossroads in their 2022 journey. After creating buzz out of the gate, they've now lost three in a row. Turnovers have been the issue, with eight coming in Jacksonville's last three games.24. Las Vegas Raiders (1-4)Previous Rank: 23The Raiders headed into their bye week coming off a frustrating loss to the Chiefs in Week 5. They'll need to stay focused if they hope to dig themselves out of their 1-4 start.25. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-4)Previous Rank: 30 Joe Sargent / Getty Images Sport / GettyIf Mike Tomlin is to endure his first losing season, he certainly won't let it happen without a fight. That was evident Sunday when the Steelers held the Bucs and Tom Brady in check despite missing multiple starters in their secondary.26. Detroit Lions (1-4)Previous Rank: 26The Lions face the Cowboys after taking Week 6 off. With Dak Prescott likely returning for the 'Boys, Detroit will need to recapture its offensive magic from the first four weeks to keep the game competitive.27. Denver Broncos (2-4)Previous Rank: 25Whatever Russell Wilson is cooking clearly isn't easy to stomach. The Broncos quarterback came out hot against the Chargers before once more faltering down the stretch. With just three completions after halftime in Monday's loss, Wilson doesn't look anywhere close to the quarterback Denver imagined it was getting.28. Cleveland Browns (2-4)Previous Rank: 27The Jacoby Brissett experience hasn't gone as the Browns hoped recently. The veteran journeyman had his worst display of the year Sunday, throwing two picks and finishing with a season-low 54.5 passer rating.29. Houston Texans (1-3-1)Previous Rank: 28Despite not receiving much credit beforehand, the Texans have hung in tough against most foes. Still, it'll be hard to keep that up over a full season unless the offense can improve on its 17.2 points per game.30. Washington Commanders (2-4) Michael Reaves / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 31The Commanders snapped a four-game losing streak with a Thursday night win over the Bears, but that hardly inspires much confidence. Carson Wentz now appears set to miss time. This team is firmly in the mix to be drafting a quarterback early.31. Chicago Bears (2-4)Previous Rank: 29Chicago has lost three straight, including a low-scoring matchup against the Commanders in Week 6. Quarterback Justin Fields' health, evaluation, and development should be the Bears' focus moving forward.32. Carolina Panthers (1-5)Previous Rank: 32This won't exactly be a fire sale because there's no point in trading a few of the only blue-chip players you have. But pretty much anyone other than Brian Burns and D.J. Moore has to be available at the deadline with the Panthers being this much of a disaster.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Staley: Chargers benched prized acquisition J.C. Jackson vs. Broncos
The Los Angeles Chargers benched cornerback and prized offseason signing J.C. Jackson for the second half of Monday Night Football versus the Denver Broncos, head coach Brandon Staley said postgame."It just wasn't good enough in the first half and we felt like we needed to make a change," Staley said. The Broncos victimized Jackson on several occasions in the opening two quarters, including a 39-yard touchdown pass to Greg Dulcich and a 47-yard deep shot to K.J. Hamler. Asked about those plays after the game, Staley confirmed that the responsibility fell on his star cornerback.
Broncos' Hackett: Wilson injured hamstring in MNF loss
Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson suffered a hamstring injury in an overtime defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night, head coach Nathaniel Hackett said postgame.Hackett didn't elaborate on the severity of the ailment.Wilson played every offensive snap for the Broncos, who fell to 2-4 after another frustrating offensive showing. The Broncos' prized offseason acquisition completed his first 10 passes but was unable to build on his hot start. He went 3-for-11 for 15 yards after halftime and didn't complete either of his attempts in overtime.Denver had the ball late in the fourth quarter with the score tied 16-16 and twice in overtime but could only muster one first down before losing on a Chargers field goal."This is very disappointing," Hackett said. "We need to have a lot more urgency across the board. It starts with me as a coach, going to all other coaches and then to the players. Players need to be more urgent. We had some opportunities there, and we got to execute at a higher level, we got to come up with better plays."Wilson finished the contest with 188 yards and a touchdown through the air. He hasn't had a 300-yard passing performance since Week 1, when the Broncos fell to his former team, the Seattle Seahawks. The 33-year-old underwent a procedure near his throwing shoulder after Thursday Night Football in Week 5.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kingsbury open to giving up play-calling amid Cardinals' struggles
Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury is willing to consider delegating play-calling duties amid his team's continued struggles on offense."I am open to anything that helps us score more points and helps us win," Kingsbury said when asked about the possibility, according to team reporter Darren Urban. "We will see where it all goes, but yeah, whatever it takes to win, I'm all for it."The head coach added: "Anything goes in this league. We will examine all avenues."In October 2020, Kingsbury told "SVPod" he'd retire before giving up play-calling, adding: "My strong suit is calling it and interacting with the quarterback. I've got to play to my strengths."Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim received extensions through 2027 this March, while quarterback Kyler Murray signed an extension through 2028 in July. The team will receive a boost to its offense in Week 7 when three-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins returns from a six-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. The Cardinals' offense ranks 16th in yards per game (346.0), 17th in passing yards per game (226.7), and 22nd in points per game (19.0). Arizona owns a 2-4 record and sits in last place in the NFC West.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Panthers' Wilks: Mayfield won't be gifted QB job when healthy
Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield won't automatically assume the starting quarterback job once he returns from injury, interim coach Steve Wilks said Monday, according to ESPN's David Newton.Wilks alluded to an open competition, saying all quarterbacks are "considered to be in the mix" to start the Week 7 meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers amid injury concerns at the position."I can tell you right now, those guys are going to compete at that position just as well as other positions do to see who exactly goes out there on Sunday," Wilks said.Mayfield missed the Week 6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams due to a high ankle sprain. P.J. Walker started the game but exited with a neck issue, forcing Jacob Eason to finish the contest.Sam Darnold is also expected to come off injured reserve Wednesday, Wilks said. However, the 25-year-old's availability is in doubt due to limited preparation time following his injury in preseason."I've got a lot of confidence in (Darnold) as an individual and a player, but being off so long, you don't know exactly how he's going to return," Wilks said.Mayfield struggled as the Panthers' starting quarterback to open the season, winning only one of his five starts. He completed 54.9% of his passes for four touchdowns to four interceptions. The Panthers have a 1-5 record. Wentz undergoes finger surgery, reportedly set to miss 4-6 weeks
Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz underwent surgery after fracturing the ring finger of his throwing hand, the team announced Monday.Wentz is facing an absence of four-to-six weeks due to the injury, sources told Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. He reportedly could be placed on injured reserve. The veteran fractured his finger in Thursday's win over the Chicago Bears. He struggled throughout the game, finishing 12 of 22 for 99 yards.Taylor Heinicke will likely start in Wentz's absence. Heinicke started 15 games last season, throwing for 3,419 yards and 20 touchdowns against 15 interceptions. Washington could also give fifth-round rookie Sam Howell his first NFL action.Wentz has produced an up-and-down debut campaign with the Commanders following an offseason trade from the Indianapolis Colts. He has thrown for 1,489 yards with 10 passing scores against six picks while taking an NFL-high 23 sacks. His recovery timeline could affect the compensation the Colts get from the NFC East club. Indianapolis received a conditional third-round pick for Wentz that can become a second-rounder if he plays 70% of the Commanders' offensive snaps.Washington, which sits at 2-4, will host the Green Bay Packers in Week 7.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cardinals' Brown avoids season-ending foot injury, out 6 weeks
An MRI revealed that Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marquise Brown's foot injury isn't as bad as was initially thought, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Brown, who reportedly faced a potentially season-ending injury, will instead be sidelined for about six weeks, according to Rapoport. The 25-year-old, who hurt his foot in Sunday's loss to the Seattle Seahawks, reportedly suffered a small fracture but won't need surgery.Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury didn't confirm the reports but said Brown will be out "indefinitely," adding that the wideout will get a second opinion on his foot, according to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.The news comes shortly after the Cardinals acquired wide receiver Robbie Anderson from the Carolina Panthers.Brown is in the midst of a strong first season in Arizona following an offseason trade from the Baltimore Ravens. He leads the team in catches (43), receiving yards (485), and receiving touchdowns (three) through six games. The Cardinals also fear that guard Justin Pugh has a season-ending knee injury, sources told Rapoport. Pugh will reportedly undergo tests. The injuries to Brown and Pugh come amid major struggles for Arizona's offense, which ranks 22nd in points per game (19) and is tied for last in yards per play (4.8). Quarterback Kyler Murray and Co. have been especially poor early in games, averaging a league-worst 0.5 points in the first quarter. The Cardinals - who play Thursday night against the New Orleans Saints - could get a boost with the return of Pro Bowl wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins following a six-game PED suspension. Arizona officially activated Hopkins to its 53-man roster Monday.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Report: Trubisky confronted Johnson in locker room before Week 4 benching
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitchell Trubisky confronted wide receiver Diontae Johnson in the locker room before his second-half benching against the New York Jets in Week 4, sources told Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.Johnson reportedly yelled at Trubisky to throw him the ball more, and Trubisky stood up as the two had a heated exchange. Rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett was then told he'd start the third quarter, according to Dulac.Pittsburgh struggled offensively in the first two quarters versus the Jets and went to the locker room trailing 10-6 at home. Trubisky completed 7 of 13 pass attempts for 84 yards with one interception. He was picked while targeting Johnson, who saw the ball skip off his hands before Jets defensive back Lamarcus Joyner caught it.Pickett, drafted in the first round this year, led Pittsburgh to 14 second-half points but was unable to avoid a 24-20 loss. He was then named the starter for the remainder of the campaign.Pickett made his second NFL start in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but left in the third quarter after suffering a concussion. Trubisky came off the bench and completed 9 of 12 pass attempts for 144 yards and one touchdown while helping the Steelers clinch a 20-18 victory. It's unclear if Pickett will clear concussion protocol in time for Sunday night's matchup versus the Miami Dolphins.Johnson has been Trubisky's most targeted player in 2022. However, the Pro Bowl receiver has hauled in just 21 of 36 targets for 196 yards and no touchdowns from the veteran quarterback.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. DeSean Jackson visiting Ravens
Veteran free-agent wide receiver DeSean Jackson is scheduled to visit the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday, his agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 35-year-old caught 20 passes for 454 yards and two touchdowns last season between the Los Angeles Rams (seven games) and Las Vegas Raiders (nine).Though he's unsigned, the three-time Pro Bowler recently said he isn't contemplating retirement, listing the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Ravens as his top destinations.Jackson established himself as one of the NFL's top deep threats after entering the league as a second-round pick in 2008, but he hasn't topped 1,000 yards in a season since 2016.He's amassed 632 receptions for 11,110 yards (17.6 per catch) and 58 touchdowns across 14 NFL seasons. The Ravens lack wide receiver depth this season, and they didn't have Rashod Bateman over the last two games due to an ankle injury. Devin Duvernay leads Baltimore wide receivers with 18 catches for 230 yards and three TDs.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

MNF best bets: Another AFC West clash to come down to the wire
Each Monday we'll finish off the week that was in the NFL with a look at value spots in the remaining game - under one condition: you promise not to chase. Whether Sunday provided a boost to the accounts or left a little to be desired, Monday Night Football provides an opportunity to show responsibility in your betting, as there will always be another wild Sunday to get lost in.The other two AFC West teams take their turn on Monday Night Football, and a prime-time game for the Broncos and Chargers means the interspersing of two narratives online. For Denver, it's mockery about how much of a mess the offense is and a weekly referendum on Russell Wilson's current place in the league's quarterback hierarchy. For the Chargers, in between jaw-dropping throws from Justin Herbert, we get to scrutinize Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, toggling between "genius" and "buffoon" based on whether or not he goes for it on fourth down and whether or not it's successful. Get your keyboards ready!Broncos @ Chargers (-4.5, 45.5)The line opened really high with news of injury being the potential root of Wilson's struggles. It didn't stay at Chargers -6.5 long and has slowly crept downward, but there's still some value left.In our weekly look at closing lines and what they mean relative to oddsmakers' power ratings, it's suggested the Broncos are merely a league-average team. Had Wilson not thrown the catastrophic interception to give the Colts hope, the Broncos would have gone into their mini-bye week with, at the very least, a stable rating. While that game wasn't pretty, it doesn't warrant a massive downgrade since the market had already been docking Denver for previous performances. As a result, the value proposition for this game is a two-part question. If we have a stable rating for the Broncos on extra rest, then the Chargers' rating is the X-factor in the equation. They closed at pick'em in Cleveland, and that game was every bit the toss-up that the point spread suggested. By comparison, a week later, the Browns were just 2.5-point favorites to the Patriots. There's only so much higher the Chargers' rating can go up, especially without stars Keenan Allen, Rashawn Slater, and Joey Bosa. The second element in question: How many points should be factored into home-field advantage (HFA) at Sofi Stadium? With more and more road teams excelling each week - and each year - I have the average HFA league-wide at 1.7 points. Consistently playing in front of visitor-heavy crowds, and at a rest disadvantage this week, I've built in just a half-point home-field advantage for the Chargers. As a result, my fair price for this game is a flat three points, which means we're not just getting a discount on the key number of three but also winning on a four-point game by taking the points with the Broncos. Look for Denver to create offense from the inside out with their run game. Meanwhile, the defense won't be the same pushover on the ground that Cleveland was last week against the Chargers.Pick: Broncos +4.5Austin Ekeler under 61.5 rushing yardsMaybe the Chargers have figured something out in their run scheme in the last two weeks, or maybe they've faced teams giving up the 29th- and 30th-most rushing yards per carry. In nine previous games against the Broncos, Ekeler averaged 31.5 rushing yards. Until facing the Texans and Browns, Ekeler hadn't even reached 31.5 in a game.Jerry Jeudy longest reception over 21.5 yardsIf we expect the Broncos' running game to be effective - no matter who carries the ball - that should open up some shots for Wilson downfield in the passing game. Both Jeudy and Courtland Sutton are in the top 20 in average depth of target (among receivers with 20 targets), so Wilson throws deep to both. Sutton has been Wilson's more trustworthy target, but the Chargers are fully aware of that. Jeudy has more yards-after-catch than Sutton and could get the field-stretching looks in single coverage. At 21.5 yards, all it takes is one big play.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. If there’s a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Prescott plans to return vs. Lions
Quarterback Dak Prescott told reporters after the Dallas Cowboys' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that he is preparing himself to return Sunday against the Detroit Lions."Yeah, for sure, that's my plan," Prescott said when asked if he'll be available for Week 7, according to Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith. "I'm preparing myself for the Lions, getting ready to play this week."Prescott suffered a thumb injury in the Cowboys' season opener. He has not played since, missing the last five games.Backup quarterback Cooper Rush led the Cowboys to a 4-2 record in Prescott's absence.Prescott was limited in practice last week. Key takeaways and analysis from Week 6 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward.Smash the panic button John Fisher / Getty Images Sport / GettyFolks, the Packers might be cooked. With all due respect to the Jets, who certainly deserve credit for the improvements made year-over-year, Sunday's loss at Lambeau has to be one of the lowest points of the Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay.This wasn't just a matter of coming up short in a sure-fire get-right spot. This was getting embarrassed, at home, against the Jets, in a way that only confirms all the issues we'd seen early in the season but overlooked in an effort to avoid jumping to conclusions. It's no longer an overreaction. This team is holding an absolute master class on wasting what remains of a Hall of Fame quarterback's career. Rodgers shares some of the blame here, to be sure, but the crux of the issue is that the Packers seem to have entered this season with the mindset that, if they were finally going to dish out the contract that would solve some long-standing issues between player and team, the quarterback's value would have to show in masking problems elsewhere.Elevating the play of those around you is a reasonable expectation for a player of Rodgers' caliber, and it's certainly something he's done in his career. But not to this extent. There's only so much you can ask of your quarterback when pass protection - once a strength of this team - is suddenly nonexistent, and his young receiver group struggles this much to create separation. Play-calling was also a particularly noteworthy issue on this day, as Aaron Jones - Green Bay's most talented skill player, who entered this week averaging 6.4 yards per carry - somehow had only four touches at halftime of a 3-3 game.Factor in a defense that is once again failing to play up to its talent level and the occasional special teams blunder, and you've got yourselves a full-blown mess with no easy answers to getting things turned around. If you want to hold out hope for the Packers on account of some potential Rodgers heroics, fair enough. But if he couldn't get to a Super Bowl with the teams he had over the last three years and with the NFC playoffs going through Green Bay, don't count on him getting even close with this group. It may not be long before we're talking about whether we'll even be seeing the Packers in the postseason at all.Giants impress again Elsa / Getty Images Sport / GettyWho doesn't love a good underdog story?Just in case the Packers being exposed as a bad football team had anyone putting a little less stock in a big win in London last week, the Giants followed it up with a statement game against the Ravens. Make that 5-1 for a New York team that nobody would have been surprised to see with a top-five pick next April. The roster itself remains wildly difficult to believe in. There are some major shortcomings at key positions on both sides of the ball, and Daniel Jones isn't the type of quarterback to elevate the play of those around him. To that, the Giants say: Who cares? As valid as any of those concerns may be, at this point, all they serve to do is further bolster the case of Brian Daboll for NFL Coach of the Year. Six games into the season, nobody is even a close second. The defense led the charge this week, doing just enough to bottle up Lamar Jackson and keep the Ravens from breaking the game open in the second half. Back-to-back turnovers in Baltimore territory with less than four minutes to play allowed the Giants to take the lead, erasing what remained of a 10-point deficit, and then effectively close things out.And so continues a theme of the Giants rising to the occasion and outperforming one opponent after another in the biggest moments of the game. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better example of a mediocre team so consistently getting results that nobody expects. Maybe we ought to stop being so surprised.Bills-Chiefs lives up to the hype Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThe most anticipated regular-season matchup of 2022 is now in the rearview mirror, and it provided just about everything we could have wanted in terms of entertainment. For the Bills, the win back at Arrowhead, the scene of last year's playoff heartbreaker, represents a small step toward getting revenge. It won't make them feel any better about missing out on an opportunity to go to the Super Bowl, given how that all-time classic ended, but it is confirmation that the Chiefs aren't some unbeatable opponent for the Bills. And in reality, nobody is.More important than any made-up narrative for Buffalo, though, is that the win gives them a tiebreaker over the Chiefs when it comes to playoff seeding. As these two teams battle it out for home-field advantage in the postseason, having a leg up in ensuring that AFC contenders have to come through Buffalo is massive. Nobody wants to deal with the Orchard Park weather in late January. And if you thought Bills Mafia was crazy now, just wait until you see them with an AFC title game at home.JuJu Smith-Schuster's breakout as the Chiefs' leading receiver stands as a major positive for the home side, as does the continued dominance of Travis Kelce. But two turnovers from Patrick Mahomes were the difference in the end, and although you certainly can't fault putting the ball in his hands as much as possible, this felt like another instance where Andy Reid was too quick to give up on a rushing attack that has proven capable of moving the ball consistently. The Chiefs finding the right balance between letting Mahomes work his magic and running the ball enough to make defenses adjust could be their key to postseason success - especially if that involves a trip to snowy Buffalo.Overall, this game was just further evidence that we are witnessing the early stages of what may become one of the great rivalries in football. The modern Brady-Manning, but with freak athleticism, if you will. Sign us up for two of those every year.Brady missing Gronk? Joe Sargent / Getty Images Sport / GettyIt's tough to figure out exactly what is wrong with the Bucs' offense right now. As easy (and fun?) as it might be to point the finger at Tom Brady, he still looks every bit the All-Pro player he's somehow continued to be well into his 40s. And it's not like he doesn't still have a ton of skill-position talent around him.But as we saw throughout Sunday's inexcusable loss to the Steelers, something is missing. And given the noticeable dropoff both over the middle of the field and in the red zone, not to mention the extra help blocking on the edge, the logical answer is that Brady is missing his old buddy Rob Gronkowski.Nobody seems to know for sure whether Gronk would seriously entertain a return, no matter how desperate Brady and the Bucs get. All indications are that the future Hall of Fame tight end, who recently rejoined FOX Sports as a studio analyst, is enjoying his second retirement. But you can bet Brady is at least trying.Even if Gronk turns down the opportunity, the Bucs should be in the market for an upgrade at tight end as we approach the Nov. 1 trade deadline - especially after Cameron Brate exited Sunday's game on a stretcher with a neck injury. The question is whether any player who could provide a Gronk-like boost up the seams and around the goal line will even be available, with so few teams in a position to sell. Mike Gesicki may well be the ideal target, given the offseason talk about the Dolphins potentially parting ways, but Miami subtracting from its offense midseason feels unlikely. Here are two other names to consider:Zach Ertz, Cardinals
Rodgers rues 2nd straight loss: Packers 'need to simplify' plays
Aaron Rodgers addressed the Green Bay Packers' struggles following Sunday's 27-10 loss to the New York Jets, saying his team needs to simplify its approach in order to succeed."The simplest plays are the best plays," the quarterback said postgame. "The smartest plays are the best plays. That's what I've always believed in."Rodgers added: "Nobody works harder on the plan each week than (head coach Matt LaFleur). ... If you think we have the right players, then we need to simplify things. If you don't, then that's a whole other conversation."Green Bay, which entered Week 6 as the NFL's 22nd-ranked offense in scoring, has now suffered two consecutive losses, dropping to 3-3 in 2022. It has yet to score more than 27 points in a game this campaign. The Packers and the Jets each finished Week 6 with 278 total yards, and Green Bay outgained New York in first downs (15-14). However, the Packers missed one field goal and had a blocked punt returned for a touchdown by the Jets. Rodgers was sacked four times."That's about as frustrating of a game as I've ever been a part of from an offensive perspective, just trying to get something going," LaFleur said Sunday, according to Ryan Wood of USA Today."It's not now. It's always been like this," Rodgers said. "It's always been when we struggle, we're doing too much."The Packers, who won 13 games in each year from 2019-20, entered the 2022 campaign with several questions at wide receiver after trading All-Pro wideout Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders in March. However, Rodgers said the loss of Adams isn't why Green Bay is struggling."We need (receiver) Sammy (Watkins) back," he said. "I think that’s happening here pretty soon. (Randall) Cobb, I'm guessing he'll be out for a little bit."Watkins was placed on injured reserve Sept. 24 with a hamstring injury. Cobb injured his ankle against the Jets and will have an MRI to determine the severity of the ailment, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Pickett ruled out vs. Bucs with concussion
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after suffering a concussion in the third quarter.Pickett went down after taking a hit from linebacker Devin White following a pass attempt. Mitchell Trubisky entered the game for Pittsburgh.
Winston active as emergency QB vs. Bengals; Olave out
New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston is active for Sunday's Week 6 game against the Cincinnati Bengals as the team's emergency backup.Andy Dalton will start for the second straight week, with Taysom Hill likely taking over if Dalton suffers an injury. Jake Luton had acted as the No. 2 quarterback, but New Orleans waived him Saturday.Winston, 28, had been listed as questionable due to back and ankle issues.Wide receiver Chris Olave, meanwhile, won't play in Week 6 due to a concussion, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. His absence is a blow to a banged-up receiving corps that's already without Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry. The 22-year-old rookie suffered the injury in the third quarter of last week's win over the Seattle Seahawks. He finished the game with four catches for 54 yards and a touchdown.Olave is off to a hot start to his NFL career, racking up 25 catches for 389 yards and two touchdowns through five games.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 6 player props: Rising over a low bar in the passing game
Intentionally or not, we threw in a bonus prop last week and posted an 8-3 effort. At 28-22 (56%) on the season, we'll complete 10 valuable bets in the player prop market and look for easy-to-accomplish benchmarks for receiving targets.Alvin Kamara over 31.5 receiving yardsAfter Kamara was a late scratch in London two weeks ago to void our bet on him, the Saints tailback was even more involved and explosive in the passing game than we thought he'd be against the Seahawks last week. The Bengals' defense appears to have performed solidly against running backs this campaign. However, their numbers are minimized by matchups against the Ravens, Dolphins, and Steelers - teams that overlook backfield targets. Cincinnati gave up 55 yards on Tony Pollard's four receptions and 53 yards on six catches by Breece Hall. With a banged-up receiver room in New Orleans, Kamara should see at least a half-dozen targets from Andy Dalton.Lamar Jackson under 59.5 rushing yardsI'm not smart enough to know how you keep Jackson from beating you with his legs. But I also didn't spend four years as the defensive coordinator of the Ravens and faced Jackson in practice. First-year Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale did, though.New York had some practice against a quality runner at quarterback when it faced Justin Fields two weeks ago. While the Bears' signal-caller recorded 52 yards on seven carries, at least the Giants will have film showing what not to do.Skylar Thompson anytime touchdown (+500)Normally, we like to keep these bets closer to coin-flip results, but we'll make an exception for Thompson's quest to be the best supporting "Skylar" since "Good Will Hunting." He's starting over Teddy Bridgewater to allow Mike McDaniel to craft a game plan around his mobility. Whether he's capable of long, methodical treks or acts as a "mini-driver" thanks to a short field, Thompson will be more willing to attack the goal line than Tua Tagovailoa. This price should be closer to +250.Christian Kirk over 4.5 receptions (-145)We'll pay a little extra juice on Kirk's over because Doug Pederson told us to. Well, sort of. The Jaguars head coach and offensive play-caller said this week that Kirk should get "nine, 10, 11 targets possibly." Since he decides that distribution, we'll assume there are some cheap catches in the plan, making the over a valuable bet even at a marginally increased price.David Njoku over 36.5 receiving yardsBrowns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Njoku didn't get a ton of looks in Week 1 because there are certain team matchups where Njoku needs to be in protection. That sounds like a coach who forgot that a 6-foot-4, 250-pound tight end might be worth involving in the passing game. In the last three contests, Njoku has recorded 89, 73, and 88 yards, respectively, over a combined 23 targets. With Bill Belichick worried about stopping the run, Njoku should get plenty of looks instead of blocking all day.Robert Tonyan over 21.5 receiving yardsTonyan has gone over this number in four of five games this season. With Aaron Rodgers looking for a target to trust, "Big Bob" has caught 14 of the last 15 balls aimed his way. Tonyan was one of Rodgers' go-to guys before tearing his ACL less than a year ago, and he seems to be getting more comfortable by the week this season.Drake London over 54.5 receiving yardsKyle Pitts should return after a week away, and his absence was why we successfully faded Drake London against the Buccaneers' defense. The 49ers are missing half of their preseason starting defensive depth chart, including cornerback Emmanuel Moseley. The Falcons could find themselves in more of a shootout at home. With Pitts around to attract some attention, London will have extra room to work and the targets to go with it.Rondale Moore over 45.5 receiving yardsThe Seahawks can't stop anybody, and this is just Moore's third game of the season. He's gone from five targets to eight, and he'll get as many as Kyler Murray wants to throw him in Seattle. With limited other options for the Cardinals, expect a big day for the explosive Moore.Christian McCaffrey over 38.5 receiving yardsPJ Walker completed 25 passes in his only start in 2021. Fourteen of those completions went to running backs, including 10 to Christian McCaffrey. With other Panthers targets unavailable or ill, Walker will rely on dump-offs to McCaffrey again.Stefon Diggs under 87.5 receiving yardsThe Bills tallied 442 yards in last year's AFC Divisional Round instant classic. Stefon Diggs had three catches for seven yards in the contest.Buffalo blew out the Chiefs in Kansas City earlier in 2021, tallying 436 yards in the process. Diggs caught two passes that night. In two meetings in 2020, Diggs had 77 and 46 yards, respectively, against the Chiefs. The Bills could score a ton again, and they (impressively) can accomplish that without Diggs doing much other than attracting defensive attention.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Report: Rams expected to seek Akers trade amid issues over role
The Los Angeles Rams are expected to field trade offers for running back Cam Akers, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Akers "has philosophical and football-related differences with head coach Sean McVay," Rapoport reports. The running back is expected to garner significant interest, and L.A. will sign off on a deal if it receives satisfactory value, adds Rapoport.McVay ruled Akers out of Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers while casting doubt over his future with the team."I would say it's more like we're dealing with things internally," said McVay on Friday. "This is kind of unchartered territory and I think the biggest thing is, out of respect for the situation, we want to keep it internally."Communication between Akers and McVay has reportedly remained cordial despite their on-field disagreements.Akers appeared set to be the Rams' running back of the future after an impressive 625-yard rookie season in 2020. However, he tore his Achilles before the 2021 campaign.Although the 23-year-old made a fast recovery to return for the Rams' postseason run to Super Bowl glory, his standing with the team was affected by two fumbles in a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, adds Rapoport.Akers leads the Rams in rushing yards this season (151) ahead of Darrell Henderson (138), but he is averaging just 3 yards per carry and has only made two receptions.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Panthers listening to trade offers for McCaffrey
The Carolina Panthers are taking calls from other teams about a possible trade for star running back Christian McCaffrey, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. However, the Panthers intend to hold on to McCaffrey unless they receive a competitive offer that potentially includes a high draft pick or multiple picks, Schefter adds. At least two teams were rejected last week when calling about McCaffrey, Schefter notes.McCaffrey's base salary for the 2022 campaign is only $1.035 million, per Spotrac. The running back is under contract through the 2025 season with salary figures of $11.8 million in the 2023 and 2024 campaigns before it increases to $12 million for the 2025 league year. The 26-year-old enjoyed his best season in 2019 as a dual-threat option out of the backfield, leading the league with 2,392 yards from scrimmage. His production earned him a Pro Bowl invite and All-Pro recognition.McCaffrey has struggled to stay healthy since his breakout campaign. He played in just 10 games between 2020-21.In five games this season, McCaffrey has rushed for 324 yards while also adding 188 yards as a receiver. The Panthers fired head coach Matt Rhule earlier this week. Rhule was in the third season of his seven-year contract but could only muster an 11-27 record, including a 1-4 start in 2022.Carolina has also discussed dealing receiver Robbie Anderson, per Schefter. Derrick Brown and Brian Burns have also reportedly received interest around the league, but the Panthers do not appear keen on parting with the defensive contributors. The NFL's trade deadline is on Nov. 1.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Brady fined $11K for attempt to kick Jarrett after controversial play
The NFL fined Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady $11,139 on Friday for attempting to kick Atlanta Falcons defensive lineman Grady Jarrett during their Week 5 game, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The incident reportedly happened on the same play Jarrett was called for roughing the passer after a third-down sack late in the fourth quarter. The officials were widely criticized around the NFL for the controversial penalty call, which effectively sealed Tampa Bay's 21-15 victory.
Colts without Taylor, Hines for Week 6 vs. Jaguars
The Indianapolis Colts will be without running backs Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced. It's the second consecutive missed game for Taylor, who's dealing with an ankle injury. Hines sustained a concussion in Week 5.Both running backs were listed as questionable for the contest before the team downgraded them to out Saturday. Taylor, 23, was a limited participant in practice Thursday and Friday. Hines, 25, fully participated Friday after being limited earlier in the week. The Colts elevated running backs Phillip Lindsay and D'Vonte Price from the practice squad Saturday. Lindsay ran for 40 yards on 11 carries in last week's victory over the Denver Broncos.Taylor leads the club in rushing with 328 yards and one touchdown this season. Report: Tua clears concussion protocol, set to return in Week 7
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa cleared concussion protocol Saturday and is expected to return for the team's Week 7 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Tagovailoa received four outside opinions while team doctors also unanimously cleared him from the protocol, Schefter adds. All parties reportedly agreed that the quarterback's scans didn't display any long-term damage to his brain. The signal-caller has been sidelined since being stretchered off the field in Week 4 after hitting his head on the turf on a sack. The incident came just days after Tagovailoa briefly exited Miami's Week 3 game when he appeared disorientated following a big hit late in the second quarter. He missed only three plays and finished the contest.Tagovailoa's clearance in the Week 3 game prompted changes to the concussion protocol after the NFL and NFLPA launched an investigation. Any player exhibiting loss of balance or instability will now not be cleared to return to play.Meanwhile, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was also cleared from the concussion protocol but will back up Skylar Thompson in the team's Week 6 game against the Minnesota Vikings, per Schefter. The Dolphins are amid a two-game slide after starting the 2022 season with three straight wins.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. "I'm a free agent; I'm ready to go."When asked what teams he would be most interested in playing for, Jackson mentioned the Eagles, Green Bay Packers, and Baltimore Ravens but placed Philadelphia at the top of the list.Jackson finished the 2021 season with 20 catches for 454 yards and two touchdowns between the Los Angeles Rams and Las Vegas Raiders. The 35-year-old has 632 catches for 11,110 yards and 58 touchdowns during his 14-year career.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Prescott listed as questionable for SNF vs. Eagles
The Dallas Cowboys aren't officially closing the door just yet on Dak Prescott playing Sunday night. The quarterback is listed as questionable for the Cowboys' Week 6 showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles.Prescott missed the last four games due to a thumb injury suffered in Week 1. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday that Dallas is still preparing to start Cooper Rush versus Philadelphia.Prescott was reportedly expected to miss four-to-six weeks after undergoing surgery. He resumed throwing at practice Wednesday.McCarthy said Thursday that the signal-caller was still sore, according to Todd Archer of ESPN."That's the most he's thrown to this point," McCarthy added. "We've got a plan for him tomorrow, a plan for Sunday, and we'll just stay the course."Rush, who took first-team reps at practice this week, has helped Dallas post a 4-0 record since Prescott went down. The backup passer has tossed four touchdowns against zero interceptions this season.A surprise addition to the Cowboys' injury report was wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who missed practice Friday with a hip injury. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones is optimistic Lamb, listed as questionable, will be good to go Sunday."I just think he's working through a couple (of) things there," Jones said, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. New Orleans Saints quarterback Andy Dalton will start Sunday's game against his former team, the Cincinnati Bengals, head coach Dennis Allen announced Friday. But the Saints won't have wide receiver Michael Thomas and cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who've been ruled out for Week 6 due to a foot ailment and an abdomen injury, respectively.Meanwhile, rookie wide receiver Chris Olave, who leads New Orleans with 42 targets this season, is listed as questionable after suffering a concussion in Week 5.Dalton started the last two weeks for New Orleans in place of the injured Jameis Winston, who's dealing with back and ankle injuries. The 34-year-old went 1-1 in those games, passing for 423 yards and two touchdowns against one interception. The 2-3 Saints are coming off a 39-32 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in which veteran Taysom Hill accounted for four touchdowns, including three scores on the ground.Dalton played in Cincy from 2011-19 and is the Bengals' all-time leader with 204 touchdown passes. The former second-round pick, who posted a 70-61-2 record with Cincinnati, also ranks second in franchise history with 31,594 passing yards. The Saints are Dalton's third different team since Cincinnati released him after selecting Joe Burrow with the first overall pick in the 2020 draft. He also played for the Dallas Cowboys (2020) and Chicago Bears (2021).Dalton is 2-0 versus the Bengals in his career, though he wasn't able to finish Chicago's win over Cincy last year due to injury.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 6 best bets: Spread, moneyline, total, and teaser
We try to discuss the various elements around the day-to-day action of sports betting - team market valuations, the need not to chase after a tough Sunday, and when to take a low-risk/high-reward shot with your favorite sides. However, we haven't discussed the concept of a bad run.If Week 4 was weird, Week 5 was downright infuriating. The Packers blew up teasers after a 10-point halftime lead. The Buccaneers didn't cover despite a 21-0 lead in the fourth quarter. The Commanders seemingly became the first team all season not to score from first-and-goal at the 2-yard line. The Jets also tallied 40 points, which seemed impossible. We're doing just fine with some of our other NFL ventures, going 18-5-2 with our five underdogs of the week and 28-22 on our Sunday props. We're not on a cold streak overall, but the bad breaks from the best bets of the week allow us to practice how we manage emotion in betting. With an infinite amount of games, there's no reason to ever get too high or too low. You can take pride in how you handle a fluky loss as much as you do in cashing a ticket.BET TYPELAST WEEKSEASON (units)ATS trio1-2 (-1.2)6-7-2 (-1.7)ML upset-13-2 (+3.6)Totals-1.11-4 (-3.4)Teasers-1.22-3 (-1.6)TOTAL-4.5-3.1Best bets ATSSaints +2The Bengals addressed their offensive line in the offseason but didn't actually fix it, and this matchup will exacerbate that weakness. The Saints' defensive line and the Superdome crowd will make life difficult for Cincinnati to get an appropriate jump on the snap.New Orleans is piecing together offense in various ways. But with Alvin Kamara back up to speed (194 total yards against Seattle) and Taysom Hill doing what he does, the pressure is off Andy Dalton. If Michael Thomas can return this week, we should see the Saints score more than enough to overcome whatever big plays LSU alumni Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase create.Colts -2Given their struggles against the Jaguars, we may be banging our head into a wall with the Colts, but this line should be at least a flat -3. The myth that Jacksonville has Indianapolis' number has kept this point spread under a field goal. However, the Colts were missing their receiving weapons in Jacksonville in Week 2, and Indianapolis' defense has been stout - seventh in yards per play allowed - even without Shaquille Leonard. The shine has come off the Jaguars after shutting out the Colts and beating a battered Justin Herbert. Indianapolis has been much better at home than on the road this season, and this sets up for a good Matt Ryan game.Eagles -6Winning a game with defense and special teams is allowed, but Dallas beat the Rams last week without Cooper Rush needing to be good and in a contest where the Cowboys' fanbase took over SoFi Stadium. We saw what a prime-time game in Philadelphia looked like when the Vikings suffered their only loss in Week 2.Against arguably the league's best offensive line, Dallas' vaunted defensive front seven won't have the advantage they've had during their four-game win streak. The Eagles' offense will fly Sunday night.Moneyline upset of the weekOur defined parameter for this section is underdogs paying at least +150.Giants +200Lamar Jackson is the obvious key to beating the Ravens, and familiarity with his ability is paramount to slowing him down. Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale spent the last few years dealing with Jackson in practice when he coached for Baltimore. It's a tough spot for New York having to return from London, but Baltimore is coming off a string of tough games and has another divisional matchup next week. Brian Daboll has made it work with limited talent, whereas the Ravens' defense has disappointed with all of theirs. At 2-to-1 odds, we'll take a shot on the Giants finding a way to win for one more week.Best total betCardinals / Seahawks over 50Much has been made about the Seahawks' offense with Geno Smith this year, so we'll assume they'll get theirs back home against the Cardinals. However, Arizona should get the biggest production boost this week. After three games against defenses in the top half of the league in yards per play allowed, Kyler Murray gets his chance to face the 32nd-ranked Seattle defense that's giving up 6.6 yards per play.In what is lined as a close game, there won't be too many defensive stops. Both teams should reach at least 24 points, combining for over 50.Best 6-point teaserSaints +8 / Packers -1.5Getting the home underdog Saints up over a touchdown is a no-brainer given that we think they're winning outright. We'll pair them with the Packers, giving them a last chance before a radical reconstruction of their rating. A week ago, Green Bay would be closer to -10 in this matchup and out of teaser range, so we'll be content on taking the Packers under a field goal.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Panthers' Wilks: Mayfield could be backup to Walker vs. Rams
Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks is optimistic Baker Mayfield could act as P.J. Walker's backup at quarterback Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams despite a high ankle injury, according to Steve Reed of The Associated Press.Mayfield was reportedly expected to miss multiple weeks. However, Wilks said an MRI would determine his status for Week 6. Mayfield was officially listed as doubtful. The veteran suffered the injury in the first half of last Sunday's loss to San Francisco after a 49ers player landed on his leg.Mayfield has struggled in his first season in Carolina, throwing for 962 yards and four touchdowns against four interceptions during a 1-4 start.Panthers cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Jaycee Horn were both listed as questionable due to ankle and rib injuries, respectively. Wilks indicated Jackson will play but Horn will miss the game.Carolina fired head coach Matt Rhule on Monday and named Wilks its interim coach for the remainder of the season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Schultz: Undefeated Eagles are built to last on both sides of the ball
Jalen Hurts is a bona fide MVP candidate and the 5-0 Philadelphia Eagles are the NFL's lone undefeated team.If you polled a group of random football fans before the season and asked them which of those things was more likely, they might say neither. But such is life in the NFL.Perhaps the most impressive element has been Philadelphia's balance. Sure, Hurts is playing like a man possessed, but so are his receivers, the offensive line, and his running back. Defensively, all three levels have stepped up."There's no easy way to defend them," one former NFL general manager told theScore. With boatloads of splashy plays, it's also easy to mistake the Eagles' offense for a finesse unit. But at the core, their identity remains that of a physical, blue-collar running team - exactly the way GM Howie Roseman drew it up.The one-two backfield punch of Hurts and Miles Sanders leads a dominant offense capable of a quick-strike approach or a methodical, 12-play drive. Patrick Smith / Getty Images"Everything you try to take away, there's a built-in counter with personnel and scheme," the former GM said.In fact, with Hurts at the helm, the Eagles have amassed a record 92 second-quarter points - the most in NFL history through five games - and 68 more than their opponents. Equally impressive, they've yet to face a second-half deficit all season. With the head coach/offensive coordinator pairing of Nick Sirianni and Shane Steichen fully synced up in Year 2, the Eagles also top the NFL with 58 explosive plays, a stat tracked internally and defined as either pass completions longer than 16 yards or rushes exceeding 10 yards. (Hurts ranks first with 42 himself.)Sanders already has 414 rushing yards, which not only slots him fourth in the league but is the most by an Eagles player through five games since All-Pro LeSean McCoy in 2013.When you add the game-breaking speed of DeVonta Smith, the sheer power and skill of A.J. Brown, and the talent of tight end Dallas Goedert, you begin to understand their sheer dominance.Bottom line: With a potent ground game and a dynamic aerial attack, the Eagles rank second in total offense (419.8 yards per game) and fifth in scoring (27 points per game)."Pretty complete team," a scout told me."You start going through each position and pretty quickly you realize there's no real weakness." Norm Hall / Getty ImagesBuoyed by an elite secondary that's as physical as any other in the league thanks to its quartet of playmakers - Darius Slay, James Bradberry, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Marcus Epps - you can't exactly throw on Philadelphia either. Equally important, the secondary is opportunistic and takes full advantage of mistakes. The defensive front - led by stalwarts Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, free-agent acquisition Haason Reddick, and first-round draft pick Jordan Davis - has been very stout, accumulating 98 pressures in five games, according to PFF. That's second only to Dallas and San Francisco. During a Week 4 comeback win over the Jags, Reddick became the first NFL player in 17 years to record at least two sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in a game.In turn, he's one of three Eagles to earn NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. Slay won it in Week 2 and Graham in Week 3.Pressures, as we know, often lead to turnovers. Naturally, the Eagles are tied with the Ravens and Bills for the league's most takeaways (11). Better yet, they rank second in opponent three-and-out percentage (43.4%), trailing only the lights-out Niners defense (43.6%)."Reddick was one of the best signings of free agency," the scout said."He's really versatile and Jonathan (Gannon, the defensive coordinator) knows how to use him and I think trusts his instincts. Reddick's smart too. He moves around the field and knows how to rush with his speed and quickness."Through the first five games of 2021, Philadelphia allowed 23.2 offensive points per game. Through the first five games of 2022, that number has dropped by more than a converted touchdown to 16 points.Jordan Schultz is theScore's NFL insider and senior NBA reporter. Fields 'hurting pretty good' after aggravating shoulder injury in TNF loss
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields said he aggravated a left shoulder injury in Thursday's 12-7 loss to the Washington Commanders."I'm hurting. Hurting pretty good," Fields said, according to NFL.com's Grant Gordon. "Got a long weekend, so I'll have some extra time to heal up."Fields didn't reveal when he first suffered the ailment, saying only that he "hurt it a while back." The second-year pro hasn't been listed on the Bears' injury report this season. He continued to take significant punishment behind a porous offensive line Thursday, including five sacks and 12 hits. The 23-year-old is tied for the NFL lead in sacks taken (23) with Matthew Stafford.Aside from a 40-yard third-quarter touchdown pass to Dante Pettis, Fields struggled to find success throwing the ball. He completed 14 of 27 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown against one interception. However, he racked up 88 yards on the ground.Fields also had the Bears in position to steal the win after leading a drive in the final minutes, but wide receiver Darnell Mooney failed to catch his fourth-down pass in the end zone.Despite the loss, Bears head coach Matt Ebeflus was encouraged by Fields' performance."I think he took a step forward. The toughness," said Ebeflus postgame, according to Sean Hammond of Shaw Local.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Rivera abruptly ends presser after fiery answer to Wentz questions
Warning: Story/video contain coarse languageWashington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera abruptly left his postgame press conference Thursday night after answering a question about the team's acquisition of Carson Wentz.Asked about an ESPN report that suggested team owner Dan Snyder was the driving force behind the offseason move to trade for the veteran quarterback, Rivera responded in part:"Everybody keeps wanting to say I didn't want anything to do with Carson. Well, bullshit. I'm the fucking guy that pulled out the sheets of paper, that looked at the analytics, that watched the tape."
Hill, McDaniel offer mixed messages about Dolphins' Ping-Pong table
The Miami Dolphins are sending some mixed messages about their locker-room Ping-Pong table.Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday that wide receiver Tyreek Hill and the rest of the team's captains voted to remove the table to eliminate distraction amid the club's two-game losing streak."They, collectively, as a group of players, wanted more time investment during the week on their jobs for Sunday," he said. "So instead of just saying it, they did something about it. And that's the whole reason that I really have a lot of love for those guys."But Hill said Thursday the team is replacing the table with a new Dolphins-inspired design because the current one is bent, according to David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. The division-rival Buffalo Bills removed their own Ping-Pong tables after hiring head coach Sean McDermott in 2017.Miami (3-2) will look to halt its skid when it hosts the Minnesota Vikings (4-1) in Week 6 action on Sunday.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Commanders to start Robinson on TNF vs. Bears
Rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. will start for the Washington Commanders on Thursday against the Chicago Bears, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.Robinson made his NFL debut against the Tennessee Titans last weekend just six weeks after being shot twice as a victim of an attempted robbery. He rushed for 22 yards on nine carries, serving as backup for Antonio Gibson in the 21-17 loss. The Commanders' third-round pick avoided serious injury during the attempted robbery with both bullets missing arteries, bones, and ligaments. He underwent surgery and was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list.Robinson was designated to return to practice and activated for his first game last week. The first-year tailback explained after last week's contest that he was humbled to be back on the field with his teammates."I feel good, man," he said, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "It's just being back out on the field. I mean, the ups and downs, but today, everything finally came into the light. I'm just so blessed to be back out there with all the fans, the team, everybody involved."Head coach Ron Rivera appeared to hint at Robinson's ascension up the depth chart after the game as well."Now that part of it is over," Rivera said. "We know he is ready to roll."Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

NFL Week 6 round-robin underdog moneyline parlay
We came close to sweeping our moneyline underdogs, and yet, only two actually won. Another 4-1 week against the spread pushes the overall record to 18-5-2 ATS and 11-13-1 on the moneyline this season, but it would be nice if the winners could consolidate into one week. The Commanders' first-and-goal fail, the Bears' brief lead late in the fourth quarter, and Kyler Murray and Kliff Kingsbury clunking their heads together with a chance to beat the Eagles all prevented a big win on our weekly bonus bet.How it worksWe parlay five underdogs together - whom we like against the spread - in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we're going to use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each for .1 units. You'll likely double your money if three teams pull off the upset. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win, as they did for us in Week 1 last season, you'll be diving into a gold doubloon silo like a young Scrooge McDuck.Who to playSteelers +320"Oh great, a team that lost 38-3 last week." - Someone, probably.Maybe the Steelers have degraded to the worst team in the NFL, but the masses left the Titans for dead too after they got walloped by the Bills. All they've done since is win every game.Obviously, the Buccaneers are better than the teams Tennessee has beaten, but this is fundamentally a value play. Even after Tampa Bay got downgraded after its high-profile loss to the Chiefs, I still have the appropriate point spread for this game at just under a touchdown. There's value in taking the Steelers (+8) against the spread. This could be a one-score Bucs win, so a +320 moneyline is just too high and worth including in our collection of moneyline sprinkles.Dolphins +150Before leg injuries slowed him at Kansas State, Skylar Thompson was a legitimate threat with his legs. In fact, pre-draft scouting reports liked his athleticism more than his arm strength. In the preseason, Thompson had seven rush attempts in his limited work. Last week, when thrust into action, Thompson didn't run once. Why? Because that wasn't in a game plan designed for Teddy Bridgewater and there were no quarterbacks behind Thompson should he have gotten hurt. With Thompson starting and Bridgewater backing up, Mike McDaniel can tailor a more unique game plan to Thompson's skills and have him run the offense for a week of practice.Look for an improved effort from the Dolphins as a whole and the Vikings' luck to dry up on the road, allowing a closer game than even a 3.5-point line expects. The Dolphins even have a chance to win.Patriots +130The Browns got Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney back last week, but it didn't matter - the defense was still bad. Cleveland allowed 465 yards to the Chargers, but the real concern was that half of that was on the ground. That's what the Patriots want to do too, as they did against the Lions last week. Also like last week, the Patriots are familiar with the opposing quarterback, and Bill Belichick's defense will do everything it can to force Jacoby Brissett to beat them. He won't.Panthers +375This is another value play. A double-digit spread assumes a downgrade with Matt Rhule fired and Baker Mayfield sidelined, but who was loving what either was doing? Mayfield was dead last in QBR and passer rating, so how much worse can P.J. Walker be?The mobile Walker can do more than Cooper Rush did last week, and the Cowboys won outright thanks to defense and special teams. The Panthers' run game and defense are, at the very least, average. With Steve Wilks taking over as interim head coach, he should bring the kitchen sink to try to steal a possession or two. The Panthers will get an additional boost via subtraction and play the struggling Rams close.Broncos +190It's not as juicy as it was when the line opened at Broncos +6.5, and it's just as uncomfortable given what we've seen from Denver's offense, but a back-to-basics approach on the ground will work against the Chargers. The Broncos' defense is still solid, and we know L.A. plays a high-variance style. If those fourth downs don't go the Chargers' way, the Broncos can stun them Monday night. Here's how the odds look this week:PARLAYODDS (Approx.)MIA+NE+PIT+2100MIA+NE+CAR+2500MIA+NE+DEN+1500MIA+PIT+CAR+2800MIA+PIT+DEN+2900MIA+CAR+DEN+3300NE+PIT+CAR+4200NE+PIT+DEN+2600NE+CAR+DEN+3000PIT+CAR+DEN+5600MIA+NE+PIT+CAR+DEN+31500Who are your five underdogs for a football betting lottery ticket?Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Report: William Jackson requests trade from Commanders
The Washington Commanders have been engaged in active discussions to move cornerback William Jackson after the veteran requested a trade, sources told Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero, and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The soon-to-be 30-year-old defensive back is looking for a fresh start in a scheme that would better fit him, per the NFL Network.Several teams have reportedly shown interest in acquiring Jackson ahead of the league's Nov. 1 trade deadline.Jackson signed a three-year, $40.5-million contract as a free agent in 2021. He spent five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals after being selected 24th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Houston product has tallied 16 tackles, two passes defended, and one tackle for loss in four appearances this campaign. Jackson was pulled late in the Commanders' 21-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans in Week 5.Head coach Ron Rivera downplayed Jackson's benching, saying postgame, "We just decided to make a change."Jackson cited a back injury as the reason for being sidelined."I fight through it for my teammates, but you know, things happen," the cornerback said last Sunday. "Just seemed better to let somebody else go in."The 6-foot, 189-pound cornerback reportedly didn't travel with his team for their Thursday Night Football matchup against the Chicago Bears. Jackson was listed on Washington's practice report this week with a back injury.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
