Jones to remain Patriots' starter despite benching in blowout loss to Cowboys
Despite his removal in the third quarter of Sunday's 38-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Mac Jones will remain the New England Patriots' starting quarterback."No sense in leaving him in the game," head coach Bill Belichick said, according to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald.Jones exited the contest having completed 12 of 21 passes for 150 yards with a 39.9 passer rating, zero touchdowns, two interceptions, and a fumble. Two of Jones' turnovers were returned for touchdowns by the Cowboys. DaRon Bland returned one of his two interceptions for a pick-six, and Leighton Vander Esch snatched a fumble for a touchdown.Despite all of that, Belichick told reporters that Jones' removal from the game was unrelated to the passer's performance.Dallas built up a 31-3 lead before New England made the switch to Bailey Zappe under center.Zappe made his first appearance of the 2023 campaign. The 2022 fourth-round pick played in four games, including two starts, last season for New England. He passed for 781 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions as a rookie.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Steelers' Tomlin ready to 'make some changes' after lopsided loss to Texans
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is prepared to shake things up following his team's 30-6 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday."Hell yeah, we got to make some changes, man," head coach Mike Tomlin said to close his postgame news conference. "That was an ugly product we put out there today. We're not going to do the same things and hope for a different outcome. What those changes are, we'll put together a plan in preparation this week.""From an agenda standpoint, we didn't do a lot of the things that we desired to do," Tomlin added. The Steelers coach didn't go into specifics about what changes could be made.Tomlin highlighted the Texans' ability to establish the run against his club's defense as a sore point. Offensively, Pittsburgh struggled to find consistency and were held to under 10 points for the second time this season.Pittsburgh's defense, which entered the Week 4 contest with a league-leading 13 sacks, pressured Houston's rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud but was unable to take the signal-caller down to the grass. The Steelers owned the 27th-ranked scoring offense entering Sunday - before the team posted a season-low six points. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada's play-calling has come under fire amid Pittsburgh's woes.Quarterback Kenny Pickett suffered a knee injury and exited the contest, adding to the team's frustration. Report: Bengals' Higgins has rib fracture, could miss time
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins suffered a rib fracture in Sunday's 27-3 loss to the Tennessee Titans, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Higgins' injury could force him to miss time, adds Rapoport. The wideout didn't come out for the second half against Tennessee, finishing with two catches for 19 yards. Higgins hasn't produced at his usual level this season, entering Week 4 with 10 catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns.Viewed as a Super Bowl contender before the season, Cincinnati sits at 1-3 following the loss to the Titans. The previously high-flying offense has been particularly poor, averaging just 12.25 points per game.If Higgins is forced to sit out games, the struggling Bengals will likely rely more on Ja'Marr Chase and Tyler Boyd. Report: Bears shopping Claypool amid benching
The Chicago Bears are looking to trade wide receiver Chase Claypool, sources told NFL insider Jordan Schultz.General manager Ryan Poles is seeking a fifth- or sixth-round pick for the wideout and is actively calling teams that he believes need receiver help, Schultz adds. The trade chatter comes after Claypool was benched for Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos. Claypool was made a healthy scratch due to multiple reasons including preparation issues, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Claypool appeared to take a shot at the team's coaching staff earlier this week after telling reporters that he doesn't feel like he has been put in the best position to showcase his talent.Acquired in a midseason trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year, Claypool has struggled in Chicago. He's caught only 18 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown in 10 games as a member of the Bears. In three contests this season, he's recorded just four catches and 51 yards.Equanimeous St. Brown is expected to be active in Claypool's place, Rapoport adds. Additionally, Tyson Bagent - an undrafted free agent - is reportedly set to be promoted to backup quarterback ahead of Nathan Peterman. The Bears are off to a disastrous start in 2023. They lost their first three games of the season and are averaging a measly 15.7 points per game, while no player on the team has exceeded 11 catches or 170 receiving yards.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. He was limited in practice throughout the week and was listed as questionable Friday. The 28-year-old produced his best performance of the season in the win over the Titans, completing over 80% of his passes for 289 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.Cleveland drafted Thompson-Robinson in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Las Vegas Raiders are releasing veteran pass-rusher Chandler Jones, the team announced Saturday.Jones was arrested Friday in Las Vegas on accusations of breaching a domestic violence temporary protection order. The Raiders said in a statement Friday that the team is "hopeful that Chandler Jones receives the care that he needs."The 33-year-old has been away from the team facility for weeks. He missed Las Vegas' first three games this year while dealing with what the club described as a "private" issue. There has been growing concern for Jones' mental health due to his online behavior, notes W.G. Ramirez of The Associated Press. Jones posted on social media Monday that he was taken to a hospital against his will last week by the Las Vegas Fire Department before being transferred to a behavioral health facility. The four-time Pro Bowler has strongly criticized the Raiders on social media. Jones, who's said the team hasn't allowed him to play this year, recently suggested in since-deleted posts that he no longer wants to play for Las Vegas head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler. The Raiders placed him on the non-football illness list on Sept. 20.Earlier this month, Jones said the Raiders' front office sent someone from the city's crisis response team to his home.Jones joined the Raiders during the 2022 offseason on a three-year contract. NFL Week 4 player props: Looking for room to run
There will be winning weeks and losing weeks in any betting format - that's just statistical variance. One way to know you've made a good bet is when it's no longer offered. That's the case with Bijan Robinson's reception total, which has evolved from 2.5 to 3.5 to 3.5 with a not-so-valuable, heavily juiced price on the over. Such is life in betting - if it's good, it won't last.Jerome Ford: Over 53.5 rushing yardsWe swung and missed with Ford last week as he struggled to get going against the Titans, but we won't abandon a decent premise after one game. This matchup might suit him better as Nick Chubb ran for more than five yards per carry in two games against the Ravens' scheme last season. Ford needs a fraction of that Sunday.Joe Mixon: Under 52.5 rushing yardsTennessee held the Saints, Chargers, and Browns runners to a league-low 2.6 yards per carry. And we know that even with a sore calf, Joe Burrow isn't shy to take the offense on his shoulders after 49 throws Monday. Expect the same strategy from the Bengals but with less success running the ball into the strength of the Titans' defense.Courtland Sutton: Over 55.4 receiving yardsWith a new head coach, there's always some wonder about who will fill the roles the veteran boss used for previous success. Through three brutal games for the Broncos, Sean Payton appears to want Sutton to emulate Michael Thomas from the coach's New Orleans days. Sutton's targets, catches, and yardage has crept up through three contests.Matthew Stafford: Over 261.5 passing yardsIt's hard to know what Stafford's yardage total should be since he spent the latter half of last season going under totals lower than this - while injured and without many good targets. However, Stafford's cashed the over in all three games this season at full health.De'Von Achane: Over 36.5 rushing yardsThe Dolphins know what they have in Achane, and so does everyone else now. Raheem Mostert isn't built for a heavy workload, and the Bills have allowed a league-high 5.9 yards per carry this campaign. The idea for making this number so low might be that Achane won't get 18 carries in a blowout, but he might clear this number with around half of that.C.J. Stroud: Under 235.5 passing yardsWe won by going over with Stroud last week, but we got help from a pair of deep connections to Tank Dell. That's somewhat reliable against the Jaguars' pass defense, but it's hard to imagine Stroud gets the requisite time to go long behind a banged-up offensive line against the Steelers.Rachaad White: Under 51.5 rushing yardsWhite might be in the doghouse after Monday night's performance, in which he recorded just 38 yards on 14 carries and had a critical fumble. Maybe he'll hit the hole the way the Bucs want him to. But if Tampa wants a more straightforward runner, Sean Tucker might get more carries against a Saints defense that hasn't given up much on the ground this season.Jalen Hurts: Under 43.5 rushing yardsHurts isn't finding room when keeping the ball, with the quarterback posting 37, 35, and 28 rushing yards in each game. The Commanders did a solid job dissuading Hurts from running last season. He ran just 15 times for 48 yards in two combined contests.Joshua Kelley: Under 52.5 rushing yardsKelley's had the Chargers' backfield to himself for two weeks, and he's done next to nothing with it, with 52 yards on 24 carries. The Raiders' run defense hasn't been terrible. It'll likely result from high volume if Kelley climbs over this number - the least efficient Chargers' offensive game plan imaginable.Brock Purdy: Under 28.5 pass attemptsThe 14-point spread is too high to get involved with in this matchup - given the backdoor cover potential - but it does suggest a blowout for the 49ers. Lost in the Cardinals' upset of the Cowboys was that Dallas got everything they could have wanted on the ground against Arizona. The Cardinals' run defense will get a tougher test in San Francisco. Purdy should be content on handing the ball to Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell, particularly late, in what should be a comfortable win.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Seahawks' Adams considered retirement after quad injury
Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams revealed Friday that he considered retiring after his latest injury."It was tough," Adams said Friday, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson. "I thought about retiring. I thought about a lot of things. Is this going to be it for me? I didn't know. But I knew eventually, after I got that MRI, I told myself I'm going to be back. I didn't know when or how, but I was going to figure it out."Adams suffered a season-ending torn left quadriceps tendon in Week 1 of the 2022 campaign. He's set to return from the injury in Seattle's Week 4 matchup against the New York Giants on Monday night. The 27-year-old defender admitted that the ailment didn't just impact his football career."I was in a dark place," Adams said.He added: "At the time, I wasn't really talking to many people, wasn't answering my phone. So, you go through real-life situations in this game of football."The three-time Pro Bowler has also suffered a pair of shoulder labrum tears during his career. In addition, he's sustained minor injuries to his groin, elbow, and fingers. However, Adams is excited to get back on the field after his extended hiatus."I won't take a play for granted," he said. "I won't take a moment or a second for granted. Just to be able to fly on a plane with my teammates is going to be big for me. ... I'm looking forward to the season. I'm excited to be back."Adams joined the Seahawks via a trade with the New York Jets ahead of the 2020 campaign. NFL, union revise gambling policy; Lions' Williams to be reinstated
The NFL and NFLPA modified their gambling policy to include harsher punishments for betting on NFL games and reduced penalties for gambling on other sports at team workplaces, they announced Friday.Under the new policy, betting on NFL games will result in an indefinite suspension for a minimum of one year. Players will receive at least a two-year ban for gambling on contests involving their own team. Game-fixing will be punished with a lifetime ban.Punishment for betting on non-NFL sports while at the workplace has been reduced from a six-game suspension to two games. A second violation will come with a six-game ban, while a third violation carries at least a one-year suspension.Due to the modifications, Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams and Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Nicholas Petit-Frere will be reinstated Monday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Williams and Petit-Frere were suspended six games earlier this year for placing non-NFL bets at work.Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a memo that the revised protocols provide players with "clarity and focus" and "clear guidance" on the consequences of violating the gambling policy. The NFL handed out multiple suspensions this offseason due to gambling policy violations. Former Lions players Stanley Berryhill, Quintez Cephus, and C.J. Moore were all suspended alongside Williams, though they were released. Ravens missing WRs Beckham, Bateman in Week 4 vs. Browns
The Baltimore Ravens will be missing key players for the second straight week.Wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Rashod Bateman won't play Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns due to an ankle and hamstring injury, respectively.Beckham also missed last week's loss to the Indianapolis Colts, while Bateman was active for the season's first three games. The 2021 first-round pick, however, has caught only seven passes for 59 yards in 2023.With the two wideouts sidelined, Baltimore will presumably continue to rely heavily on Zay Flowers, a first-round rookie who leads the team with 25 targets, 21 receptions, and 188 receiving yards. The Ravens' offense also features tight end Mark Andrews and wideout Nelson Agholor, among others.Baltimore also ruled out cornerback Marlon Humphrey and pass-rushers David Ojabo and Odafe Oweh. Offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley is listed as doubtful for the AFC North clash and is expected to be sidelined for the third straight week.
Colts' Richardson to return vs. Rams after clearing concussion protocol
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson will return for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams after clearing concussion protocol, head coach Shane Steichen announced Friday.Richardson missed the Week 3 win over the Baltimore Ravens after suffering a concussion in the first half of Indianapolis' Week 2 contest versus the Houston Texans. He was a full participant during this week's practices.Gardner Minshew stepped in for Richardson against the Texans and Ravens, helping the Colts win both games to move to 2-1.Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in this year's draft, suffered the concussion on his second touchdown run of the first quarter against Houston. He returned for the following two series before self-reporting symptoms. The 21-year-old has thrown for 279 yards and one touchdown against one interception this season. Best Week 4 total bets: Ravens to rebound, Saints to tumble
A 1-2 record on total bets in Week 3 brings us to 4-5 on the season. Let's turn it around and find some winners this week.As we settle into the season, the great teams separate from the good who separate from the bad. That should give us a clearer picture of the offenses we can trust and those we can fade.Falcons @ Jaguars under 43.5The Jaguars' offense, for whatever reason, hasn't lived up to expectations this season. After a divisional-round playoff appearance last campaign, Jacksonville is 1-2 to start 2023 while averaging 19 points per game, which ranks 21st in the league.Trevor Lawrence hasn't been phenomenal, but more blame lies with the pieces around him. The offensive line is barely holding up, and the Jaguars' weapons, which were supposed to improve with the addition of Calvin Ridley, have been subpar.Ridley has three drops on the season, while Jacksonville has a combined eight - tied for the most in the NFL. The Jaguars might eventually turn it around, but they aren't capable of hitting a switch and becoming a prolific offense like the Chiefs are. This will take time, meaning there's no reason to expect Jacksonville to turn it around any time soon. The Falcons offense isn't much better. They average even fewer points per game than Jacksonville. Two of Atlanta's three games have gone way below 43.5.Saints team total under 21.5Derek Carr is out, and Jameis Winston is in for the Saints this weekend. Saints fans and bettors are in for the roller-coaster ride that is the Winston experience. He appeared in three contests last season, throwing five interceptions. However, he averaged just under 300 passing yards per game. When Carr went down last week and Winston came in for relief, the Saints offense looked stale. Winston has an entire week to prepare as the starter, but New Orleans' offense - with either Carr or Winston - has been pedestrian. It's a revenge game for Winston as he faces his former team - the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay's defense is great, and coach Todd Bowles is one of the best defensive minds in the game. The game total is 39.5, the lowest of the weekend. Instead of touching a side on that, it's smarter to fade Winston and the Saints by playing their under 21.5 points.Ravens team total over 19.5This number is surprisingly low for a Ravens team whose lowest point total this season is 19. That results came last Sunday in an uncharacteristically poor performance in an upset loss to the Colts.Last week's outcome isn't indicative of the Ravens', or their offense's, future. As long as Lamar Jackson is healthy, Baltimore's offense is in good shape. Part of the reason this number is low is due to the Browns' great defense - or so it's perceived to be.The Browns are holding teams to the fewest points per game through three weeks. But that statistic can be misleading based on Cleveland's opponents. They limited the Bengals to three points in Week 1 with a hobbled Joe Burrow and surrendered just three points to a horrific Titans offense last week. The Browns also allowed the Steelers to put up 26 points on them two weeks ago. Their defensive unit is certainly good, but it's overrated. The Ravens will bounce back from last week's loss and won't have a problem scoring points against an overvalued Browns team. The Ravens are 3-point road underdogs. It might also be worth taking the points, but the Ravens team total is likely a safer bet.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. Rams' McVay: Kupp to return to practice next week
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp will be back on the practice field next week, head coach Sean McVay announced Friday, according to NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano.Kupp's practice return will open a 21-day window for the team to activate him off injured reserve. The veteran wideout was placed on IR prior to the Rams' Week 1 contest against the Seattle Seahawks due to a hamstring issue.McVay has reiterated during Kupp's absence that he was hopeful the wideout would be back once his minimum four-game stay on IR ended. The 2021 Offensive Player of the Year initially injured his hamstring early in training camp before suffering a setback at the end of August.Kupp caught 75 passes for 812 yards and six touchdowns over nine games last year. NFL Week 4 best bets: Tightly lined clashes the order of the day
Week 4 of college football was only playing the hits, and Week 4 of the NFL has its fair share of bangers. However, a game like Dolphins-Bills is more interesting as an assessment of how valuable various futures bets on Miami are. Before you rush to take points with the team that scored 70 last week and is getting Jaylen Waddle back, know that there's a reason Buffalo is favored. We'll have the popcorn ready for that clash, but with seven other games lined at three points or fewer, our ability to pick outright winners will be put to the test.Best bets ATSWe've already discussed the five underdogs with a shot to win outright relative to their price, and as always, they're worth a look against the spread.TEAMSPREADFalcons+3Buccaneers+3.5Panthers+4.5Commanders+8.5Patriots+6.5However, there are more plays worth making this week.Rams (PK)Despite previous preparation, the Rams were buried Monday night against the Bengals. Cincinnati defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo relied on Trey Hendrickson to create pressure and moved Sam Hubbard around to confuse the Rams' offensive line. The Colts won't be able to replicate that. That means Matthew Stafford should have a similar day to Week 1, when the Rams threw the ball early and often on the Seahawks. Anthony Richardson and the Indianapolis offense aren't built for a shootout. If L.A. gets a lead, it won't let the Colts hang around as they did in Baltimore last week.Broncos (-3)Which would you rather be - the team that broke or the team that's broken?Things got out of hand for the Broncos, who turned the ball over repeatedly as the Dolphins stepped on their throats by pouring in touchdown after touchdown. The Broncos broke. However, the Bears are completely broken in every way. Oddsmakers rate Chicago as the worst team in the NFL, and there's nothing about the Bears' organizational infrastructure to indicate they'll bounce back. The Broncos have at least functioned this season, scoring on explosive plays and slowing opponents for a half at a time. This early into the Sean Payton era, I can't imagine he's lost the room already. Matt Eberflus, on the other hand, may have.Steelers (-3)The numbers bettors will take the Texans at a field goal because of where the Steelers' point spreads have closed the last two weeks. However, given those wins came as an underdog, Pittsburgh might be undervalued based on poor offensive showings against the 49ers and Browns - two defenses we now know might be the best in the league.Laremy Tunsil suffered a setback before Week 3 and will likely miss this game as well. C.J. Stroud will be behind the Texans' backup offensive linemen.Browns moneyline (-120)The Ravens might be getting healthier, but I can't rely on Ronnie Stanley staying that way, and there's little threat coming from the Baltimore run game. That means the Browns' defense gets to tee off on Lamar Jackson with a compromised offensive line, setting him up for one of his turnover-laden games. The Browns' offense should have more success running with Jerome Ford and Kareem Hunt than it did last week, so if Deshaun Watson can be remotely responsible with the ball, he'll eventually be able to take a few deep shots on the Ravens' secondary.Moneyline upset of the weekOur defined parameter for this section is underdogs paying at least +150.Panthers (+175)Let's say I'm lower than the betting market on the Vikings. They're 0-3 and are at best 1-2 against the spread - depending on what number you bet in their Week 2 game with the Eagles. Now they've gotten bet up to as high as -5 in Carolina?Maybe the assumption is that Bryce Young is a downgrade from Andy Dalton, but how would we know? A debut in Atlanta wasn't an easy task. The quarterbacks to have faced the Saints' defense have ratings of 28.8, 87.1 and 66.4. Young had a better rating than Ryan Tannehill and Jordan Love. The Vikings' season is slipping away, and Young can take advantage of their porous defense. There's value longer than +150 on betting that upset.Best 6-point teaserTitans +8.5 / Chiefs -2.5It might not be long before we look back at every team that played the Browns' defense and forgive them for a sorry performance. The Steelers and Bengals looked far more functional the week after facing Cleveland. I expect the same for the Titans. This is a tough spot for the Bengals after their must-win contest Monday night. Their "just pass it to Ja'Marr Chase" game plan for their immobile star quarterback is out of the bag. Mike Vrabel and the Titans' defense should be ready for that one trick. Tennessee's run defense has only allowed 2.6 yards per carry - the best mark in the NFL.Getting the Chiefs down under a field goal feels like a godsend, with the point spread moving down to -8.5 late in the week.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Panthers' Young cleared to play vs. Vikings after 1-game absence
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young has been officially cleared to play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings after missing Week 3 with an ankle injury, the team announced Friday.Young was dealing with an ankle sprain, and head coach Frank Reich originally said the No. 1 overall pick could miss up to two weeks. However, the Alabama product was a full participant after returning to practice Wednesday."It was good. I thought it was better than I expected," Reich said of Young's week, according to David Newton of ESPN.Young completed 59% of his passes while tossing just 299 yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions in his first two NFL starts. Carolina's offense struggled in those games, failing to score more than 17 points in both appearances. The Panthers had their best offensive performance of the season with Andy Dalton under center in Week 3, but that wasn't enough to avoid a 37-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks that dropped Carolina to 0-3.The Panthers already ruled out safety Xavier Woods (hamstring) for Sunday's game against the 0-3 Vikings. They also listed linebacker Frankie Luvu (hip) and running back Miles Sanders (groin) as questionable for the Minnesota game.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Browns 'hopeful' Watson can play vs. Ravens despite right shoulder injury
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is dealing with an injury to his throwing shoulder and is listed as questionable, but head coach Kevin Stefanski is "hopeful" he can play Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, according to Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal.Stefanski said Watson did some "light" throwing once Friday's practice was closed to the media and took some reps with the first-team offense. The quarterback was listed as limited on Wednesday and Thursday. He didn't throw at all during the media portion of the former session and only in a limited capacity during the latter practice.Rookie backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson would be in line to start if Watson can't suit up in Week 4.Watson apparently suffered the injury during a third-quarter run in which he took a shot to the shoulder from Tennessee Titans safety Amani Hooker. The 28-year-old has completed 63.7% of his passes for 678 yards and four touchdowns against two interceptions this season. He's also rushed for 83 yards and one score. Both Cleveland and Baltimore sit at 2-1 through three weeks of the campaign.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Packers' LaFleur: 'We got our ass kicked' vs. Lions
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur didn't hold back on what he thought of his team's performance on Thursday Night Football."We got our ass kicked," LaFleur said, according to Kevin Patra of NFL Network. He added: "It wasn't good enough. They whipped us. They manhandled us."Packers safety Rudy Ford recorded an interception on the Lions' first drive that resulted in a Green Bay field goal, but Detroit's offense had its way from there. The Lions totaled 198 yards and 24 points on the following four drives, putting the Packers in a big hole early. Detroit capped that run by getting an interception in Green Bay territory to set up a touchdown that pushed the lead to 24-3 just two minutes into the second quarter. It's the second straight contest Green Bay has trailed by at least 17 points in the first half.Packers quarterback Jordan Love had his worst game of the season, completing 23 of 36 passes for 246 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The Lions sacked Love five times, resulting in minus-43 yards for Green Bay's offense."It's hard to throw on your back. We have to protect (Love) better," LaFleur said.Left tackle David Bakhtiari and left guard Elgton Jenkins didn't suit up for the Packers on Thursday. Green Bay placed Bakhtiari on injured reserve after the 31-year-old had arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.Bakhtiari is scheduled to have a second surgery in a couple of weeks that will likely sideline him for the remainder of the season, Rapoport adds. The Packers face off against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football in Week 5.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lions' Montgomery, Decker to return vs. Packers
Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery is active for Thursday night's game against the Green Bay Packers. The 26-year-old has been dealing with a thigh bruise he suffered in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks. Offensive tackle Taylor Decker is also dressed to play against the Packers.Decker has missed the last two games due to a high ankle sprain. He was a limited participant in every practice this week. Montgomery missed last week's contest against the Atlanta Falcons. The Iowa State product was also a limited participant in practice all week. The Lions signed Montgomery to a three-year, $18-million deal this offseason. He has 37 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns this year.Detroit rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs received most of the workload last week in Montgomery's absence, rushing for 80 yards on 17 carries.Meanwhile, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is inactive. Moseley is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last season with the San Francisco 49ers. Packers' Jones active for TNF vs. Lions after 2-game absence
Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones is active for Thursday's game against the Detroit Lions after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury, the team announced. The Packers will monitor the workloads of Jones and wide receiver Christian Watson, who's also active after missing the first three games of the season, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Jones was injured during the season-opening 38-20 win against the Chicago Bears after racking up 41 rushing yards, 86 receiving yards, and two total touchdowns. The Packers' offense has struggled without Jones, Watson, and left tackle David Bakhtiari, who'll miss at least the next four games after being placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury.Green Bay didn't score through three quarters against the New Orleans Saints before an 18-point explosion in the fourth quarter that earned the win. Quarterback Jordan Love was the team's leading rusher against New Orleans with 39 yards.Jones is coming off a 2022 campaign with 1,121 rushing yards, 395 receiving yards, and seven total scores.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Wilson: Jets' offense has to try to prove Namath wrong
New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson wasn't hurt by harsh criticism from team legend Joe Namath. Instead, he's taking it as a challenge."I mean, he's passionate," Wilson said Thursday, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "He's obviously one of the greats, so as an offense, we've got to do everything we can to try to prove him wrong."Namath described Wilson's play in the Jets' 15-10 home loss to the New England Patriots as "awful" and added that he "wouldn't keep" the signal-caller.Wilson completed just 18 of 36 pass attempts for 157 yards and took three sacks in the loss to New England. The former No. 2 pick appeared to give himself up on one of the sacks, which Namath described as "disgusting."Head coach Robert Saleh, who's frequently come to the passer's defense, said Wednesday that Namath was entitled to his opinion, but they would have to "agree to disagree" on his assessment of Wilson, according to NJ.com's Andy Vasquez.Tight end Tyler Conklin took it a step further, calling the 80-year-old's comments "harsh."The Jets' offense has struggled to get any momentum going since Wilson stepped in for Aaron Rodgers following the veteran's season-ending Achilles tear in Week 1. Dolphins' Hill: Tagovailoa playing at MVP level
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is impressed by what head coach Mike McDaniel has done with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the rest of the team so far this season."I tip my hat to Coach McDaniel," Hill said on his "It Needed To Be Said" podcast. "He's been doing a terrific job with Tua. The way Tua is playing right now, it's definitely MVP-level. Being on the sidelines just watching the fans chanting "M-V-P" gave me chills in my body."Hill added, "It was almost like the LeBron (James) free-throw moment."The Dolphins - one of three unbeaten teams left - are the league's hottest club right now after claiming a historic 70-20 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 3. Fans at Hard Rock Stadium chanted "M-V-P" midway through the game for Tagovailoa, who currently leads the NFL in EPA per play and passer rating, among other categories. The 25-year-old signal-caller has also completed 71.3% of his passes while tossing eight touchdowns to just two interceptions in 2023. Led by Tagovailoa, Miami's offense ranks first in most categories, including points and yards."Every day at practice we're having fun, we're laughing," added Hill, who joined the Dolphins during the 2022 offseason as part of a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs. "We're doing the same things that we used to do in Kansas City. And it's special here now, man. It's beginning to get really special, and I'm loving it."Miami went 8-5 with Tagovailoa under center last year, but the passer missed time in 2022 with multiple stints in the concussion protocol. Bears' Getsy praises Fields' leadership despite 'a lot of shit' going on
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy likes what he's seen from quarterback Justin Fields despite the team's early struggles this season."Our expectations have always been the same," Getsy said Thursday, according to ESPN's Courtney Cronin. "It's about (Fields) getting better every single week and making sure that he's mastering what we're doing from our perspective. And being the leader of that unit. And I think he's doing a really nice job in the midst of a lot of shit right now and going on."So, it's been good to see him be able to put it on his shoulders and be the guy that wants to help make this thing get right."The Bears headed into the 2023 season as potential breakout candidates after an aggressive offseason. Chicago added starters on both sides of the ball while trying to upgrade the supporting cast around Fields. Among the team's biggest acquisitions were wide receiver D.J. Moore and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.Chicago, however, started the season 0-3 while ranking 27th in points scored and 29th in total yards. The Bears, who host the 0-3 Denver Broncos in Week 4, have now lost their last 13 games dating back to last year.Fields also hasn't met the expectations around him. The 2021 first-round pick has completed 58% of his passes and posted a 67.7 passer rating. Despite the slow start, the 24-year-old recently said he still believes the Bears can make the playoffs.Getsy and Fields seem to be on the same page."We're in the process of building something special," Getsy said. "I think that we're in the phase of it's Week 3 going into Week 4 and we're going on to find a way to attack Denver in a completely different way than we did Kansas City. That's a week-to-week challenge that you have. There's different schemes. There's different mentalities of coordinators that you're playing against. ... It's a 17-week process. It is not a three-week process."Chicago has also struggled defensively, ranking 31st in points allowed. Defensive coordinator Alan Williams also resigned from his position on Sept. 20 to focus on his "health and family." Inappropriate activity was also part of Williams' decision to leave the team, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Head coach Matt Eberflus is expected to replace Williams as the club's defensive play-caller for the remainder of the year.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vikings' Jefferson 'tired' of hearing about lost season, trade speculation
Justin Jefferson is fed up with talk that the Minnesota Vikings should consider tanking or trading off assets amid an 0-3 start to the season."I'm tired of people saying that we're looking into next season or all of the trades and stuff like that," Jefferson said Thursday, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert. "We're focused still on this season. We have a lot more games to go and we have a lot more things to accomplish this season."The Vikings have turned the ball over nine times, their highest through three games since 2013. The ball-security issues culminated in head coach Kevin O'Connell threatening to bench players who don't protect the football.Minnesota has numerous players with contracts expiring after this season, including quarterback Kirk Cousins and pass-rushers Danielle Hunter and Marcus Davenport. However, Jefferson believes there's too much time left to ditch aspirations for the campaign already."There's things that you've got to go through throughout the season to really tell if you're going to be a great team or not," Jefferson added. "We're handling adversity early in the season with the turnovers and being 0-3, but there is a whole bunch of more games to go."The Vikings trail the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions, who are both 2-1, in the NFC North. NFL Week 4 betting storylines: AFC East clash headlines the weekend
The Dolphins' explosion, the Jets' debacle, the Cardinals' upset victory. The storylines were endless last week. Here, we'll provide a couple of notable Week 4 storylines to look out for, including an AFC East battle and a matchup between bottom-dwellers.There are always markets - whether it be game spreads, totals, or player props - to profit off of the weekend's most intriguing developments. Let's break it down.AFC contenders clashThe Dolphins hung up 70 points against the Broncos last week, the most in a game since 1966. It was a masterful offensive clinic courtesy of coach Mike McDaniel, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and receiver Tyreek Hill. It's almost unfathomable to think a team could score 70 points in a 60-minute NFL game. The Dolphins are lethal and are reinventing how offenses function.Yet the Bills are 3-point favorites against the Dolphins in Buffalo on Sunday. It's rare to score 70 points, but it's even more rare to put up 70 and then enter the following week as an underdog. That's the reality of the NFL.The Bills and the Dolphins are among the class of the NFL. They have the fourth- and sixth-best odds to win the Super Bowl, respectively. Tagovailoa is also the MVP favorite, while Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen is the fourth favorite.Oh, and these two teams happen to play in the same division. The Dolphins (3-0) are currently -125 to win the AFC East, while the Bills (2-1) are +130. If Buffalo wins Sunday, those odds will surely flip.Don't expect anyone in this game between evenly matched teams to score 70 points or outscore their opponent by 50. However, you can expect a ton of points from these high-powered offenses. The total is set at 53.5, which is the highest of the weekend. But the defenses deserve attention, too, especially Buffalo's. This is the best defense Miami has faced, as the Bills are allowing the second-fewest points per game.Tagovailoa's passing yards line is set at 276.5, while Allen's sits at 269.5. Allen has only hit that mark once this season, while Tagovailoa has hit his twice.Stefon Diggs' receiving yards are set at 81.5. He's averaging 93 per game as Allen's top weapon. Hill's receiving yards are set at 86.5. He's averaging 137 yards on just over eight targets per game as Tagovailoa's top target.Battle of the winless teamsWhat's more fun than watching two 0-3 teams battle it out for their first win? All the real NFL sickos are in luck. Broncos-Bears and Vikings-Panthers may not get the most eyeballs, but each club is playing for its season Sunday.Just six teams since 1979 have made the playoffs after starting 0-3. But only one has ever made the postseason after starting 0-4 - the 1992 San Diego Chargers. Whoever loses these games can start focusing on the offseason.Let's start with Broncos-Bears, where the game total is set at 46.5 and the Broncos are 3.5-point road favorites. The Bears are an absolute dumpster fire of an organization. They entered the season with promise, but they've been just as bad as the last couple of years. Justin Fields is certainly part of the problem, and now Chicago has to figure out what to do at quarterback following this season. The Bears haven't been seriously competitive in any game this season, which includes a 31-point loss to the Chiefs last week. The Broncos haven't been much better, though. It's one thing to lose to a superior opponent such as the Dolphins, but to lose 70-20 is an embarrassment. There are only two ways to respond to a loss of that magnitude: with vengeance, or with a sense of defeat.A lot rides on head coach Sean Payton's shoulders to motivate his team. This is the same guy who trashed his predecessor a few weeks ago for struggling to win games in Denver. As for the other game, it's no surprise the Panthers have yet to win with a rookie quarterback and a lackluster roster. Bryce Young is struggling as a passer. He sat last week with an ankle injury but is expected to play Sunday. The Vikings are 4.5-point road favorites, while the total is set at 46.5. It's surprising Minnesota hasn't found its way into the win column after a playoff appearance last year. However, the Vikings' regression was predictable to some degree. They were 11-0 in one-score games last year, the best mark in NFL history. This year, the lucky streak seems to have ended as Minnesota has lost all of its games by one score. But the Vikings couldn't ask for a better opponent to try and turn their season around.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. He exited the Dolphins' Week 2 victory over the New England Patriots after a late hit in the fourth quarter and didn't return. He had a team-high 86 yards. The 24-year-old missed Miami's game against the Denver Broncos. The Dolphins continued to roll without him, scoring 70 points and producing an NFL-record 726 yards of offense.Waddle has posted back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2021. Chargers' Jackson 'confused' by healthy scratch call for Week 3
The Los Angeles Chargers made J.C. Jackson a healthy scratch for Sunday's pivotal win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3, and the highly-paid cornerback isn't sure why."I don't know. What else do they expect me to do?" Jackson told NFL.com's Bridget Condon on Wednesday. "I told coach (Brandon Staley), 'What else do you expect me to do?' I've been doing everything. I came back from my injury pretty fast."I've been putting in extra work after practice, even in meeting rooms. The DBs every Friday, we all meet to do extra film and being a good teammate, so I don't know what it is. I'm still kind of confused and still don't have answers to why I'm getting treated like this."Jackson signed a five-year, $82.5-million deal as a free agent in March 2022, but his first season in L.A. was cut short by a ruptured patellar tendon sustained in Week 7.Prior to the cornerback's injury, he was struggling to replicate his All-Pro form from his time with the New England Patriots, allowing a career-worst 149.3 passer rating when targeted. His poor performance continued into this season, giving up one touchdown, six catches on 12 targets, and 19.7 yards per completion. The veteran believes it's because he's still not completely healthy."That's exactly what it is, I'm not 100%," he said. "I know that the doctors know that. I'm not 100%, so I'm doing my best. We're giving the team what they want. I'm doing my best, and I don't know what they expect me to do."Staley said the decision to make Jackson inactive was a "coach's decision," adding that the team "felt like this was the right group for this game."The Chargers avoided an 0-3 start with a 28-24 victory over Minnesota. The AFC West club will look to continue its momentum at home Sunday versus the Las Vegas Raiders.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. We have shown that the professional spring football model can work - and, in many ways, have done what many football and business minds thought was impossible."The merger still requires regulatory approvals for the transaction to be consummated, and more details on the merger will be released at a later date.Earlier this week, the USFL filed for 22 trademarks that revealed "National Spring Football League" as a potential new name, according to Front Office Sports. The XFL relaunched for a 2020 season after a 19-year hiatus. Week 4 round-robin underdog parlay: Connecting games with a London bridge
Last week's upset picks were gross. It turns out they weren't uncomfortable enough. We made our selections due to a combination of the plethora of underdog options and our back-to-back wins in our weekly guilty pleasure - the one parlay we'll play each week in the name of responsible betting and bankroll management. We don't like to lament lost opportunity, but grouping our Texans pick with the Colts and Cardinals would've been enough to make us happy with three of five. Last week's disappointment serves as a reminder that there's no such thing as too wild of a pick when we're talking about moneyline value. How it worksWe parlay five underdogs together - which we also bet against the spread - in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we'll use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each for .1 units. You'll likely double your money if three teams pull off the upset. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win, you'll be diving into a gold doubloon silo like a young Scrooge McDuck.Who to playFalcons (+140)The only way I can get to a point spread of Jaguars -3 in this game is with a full home-field advantage edge applied to Jacksonville for playing in London. However, Doug Pederson's sole London game with the Jags ended in defeat, while Arthur Smith led the Falcons to a win in England two years ago. Jacksonville - now 0-6 as home chalk - hasn't shown much this season. This will be a more welcoming environment for Desmond Ridder and Atlanta's run game than last week's road opener in Detroit. Any downgrade based on that game is an overreaction.Like many London games before it, this one comes down to a field goal, at which point we'll wake up Sunday morning with a +150 price that falls our way.Panthers (+175)Close your eyes and picture the Panthers-Seahawks game in Week 3. Now remove Carolina's 12 billion false starts. A decent offensive performance from the Panthers could produce more points given they were a missed field goal away from a second-half lead.By close at kickoff, the market didn't care whether Bryce Young or Andy Dalton started, eventually settling at the same point spread as the opener. The Panthers' defense is getting more ravaged with injury by the day, but the Vikings haven't done much to stop opponents this season. We could see Carolina in another high-scoring game that goes either way. Back home without operating amid the crowd noise din, the Panthers are ripe to get their first win of the season against a team running low on hope amid a 0-3 start.Buccaneers (+140)Baker Mayfield! Jameis Winston! The NFL, it's faaaaaantastic! If the Saints wanted Winston to start games, they wouldn't have gone and outbid teams for Derek Carr. They scored zero points after Carr left Sunday's game in Green Bay. That said, Winston isn't solely to blame since the Saints haven't scored much with Carr, either. Rashid Shaheed, Jimmy Graham, and Tony Jones have accounted for their four offensive touchdowns this season.Fundamentally, there just isn't much difference between any of the teams in the NFC South. New Orleans had success slowing Tom Brady during his time in Tampa, but at least Mayfield and new offensive coordinator Dave Canales provide a different look in a game that could go either way.Commanders (+320)The Eagles survived illness and the Buccaneers, winning convincingly on Monday night. However, there were still some lingering holes in their game.Defensively, they got bailed out by Mike Evans' propensity to drop a variety of third-down conversions and touchdowns. Offensively, the Bucs allowed the Eagles to get into third-and-push situations, and the game was opened up by a broken-play touchdown from Jalen Hurts to Olamide Zaccheaus. Had the first half stayed closer, there may not have been a 300-yard differential.Last year, the Commanders pulled off this upset when they held the Eagles to 264 yards of offense. Washington got kicked down to size by the Bills last week, but much of that was down to Sam Howell and Co.'s outlier five-turnover performance. Look for the Commanders to secure the ball, have more time-consuming drives, and keep this close enough to win.Patriots (+230)Who knew we might've been a week late with a Cowboys fade? Dallas lost to the Cardinals despite running for 5.6 yards per carry. That was partly because they went 1-for-5 in the red zone and the defense allowed over 200 yards rushing.Couldn't the Patriots do that, too? Can't New England run on the Cowboys, and can't its defense play a similar bend-but-don't-break style that kept it in games with the Eagles and Dolphins? If so, then this game comes down to turnovers. The Patriots can take advantage of Dak Prescott's propensity of forcing it to find a way to win a low-scoring game. How the odds look this week:PARLAYODDS (Approx.)ATL+CAR+TB+1500ATL+CAR+WSH+2300ATL+CAR+NE+2000ATL+TB+WSH+2400ATL+TB+NE+2000ATL+WSH+NE+3300CAR+TB+WSH+2300CAR+TB+NE+2000CAR+WSH+NE+3200TB+WSH+NE+3300ATL+CAR+TB+WSH+NE+22000Who are your five underdogs for a football betting lottery ticket?Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Panthers' Thielen: 'Little weird' preparing for game vs. Vikings
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Adam Thielen isn't used to preparing for a game against his former team."It's already honestly a little weird watching tape," Thielen said, according to Andrew Krammer of the Star Tribune. "It's just crazy to be game-planning against guys that were my teammates for a long time."Thielen spent the first 10 years of his career with the Vikings. After three seasons of struggling to get playing time, Thielen got a starting job in 2016 and never looked back. The 33-year-old is fourth in franchise history in receiving yards (6,682) and third in touchdowns (55). He made two Pro Bowls during his tenure in Minnesota and secured a second-team All-Pro selection in 2018."I can't wait to see those guys," Thielen said, per Krammer. "I'm going to get out extra early for pregame warmups just to make sure I can see all those guys and all the people that have meant so much to me and really just thank them, thank all the people that have been influential in my life."Thielen added he's "been thinking" about this matchup since the schedule was released in May.The Minnesota State product has 20 catches for 211 yards and two touchdowns in three games this season.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc.
