Burrow reached out to Rodgers about calf injuries before MNF win
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow said he reached out to New York Jets signal-caller Aaron Rodgers last week regarding calf injuries before he suited up for Monday Night Football."He's dealt with calf issues his whole career, and (I) wanted to use him as a resource and get his thoughts, what he might have done," Burrow said, according to ESPN's Ben Baby. "He's been through it, done that. And he was great about it."Burrow was listed as questionable heading into Cincinnati's game versus the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3 after aggravating a calf injury in Week 2. The 26-year-old, who ultimately helped the Bengals edge the Rams for their first win this season, originally suffered the ailment at training camp.Rodgers has battled multiple calf injuries throughout his career, mostly recently in May during his first organized team activities with the Jets. The four-time NFL MVP praised Burrow during an appearance Tuesday on "The Pat McAfee Show" and revealed that he texted the Bengals star after the Rams matchup."I give Joe a lot of credit," Rodgers said Tuesday. "Just for him to tough it out, I don't think that people realize how much pain and limited mobility he was in. But for him to gut it out last night and to make enough plays to win, like I texted him, that's what great competitors do. They show up and play through the pain and don't make it a big deal."Burrow completed 26 of 49 pass attempts for 259 yards in Week 3 with no touchdowns and one interception. The 2020 No. 1 pick is happy he didn't suffer any setbacks against Los Angeles."It'll get better each week I don't have a setback," Burrow said of his injury Wednesday, according to Kelsey Conway of Cincinnati Enquirer. "It was big to get through Monday without having any setbacks. That means it will be stronger this week. ... All you can do is rest it and take time. But I'm gonna continue to play, continue to practice, and it'll get stronger through the year."Cincy visits the Tennessee Titans in Week 4.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jets' Saleh, players OK with Rodgers calling out team amid struggles
The New York Jets don't have any issues with injured quarterback Aaron Rodgers calling out the team for its recent sideline incidents."We shouldn't be having scuffles on the sideline, whether it's positive or negative. It brings the wrong energy," center Connor McGovern said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "If it comes off in that kind of demeanor, it can cause panic, and you just don't need that around."Multiple Jets players have expressed their frustrations as the offense has struggled with Zach Wilson as the team's starting quarterback. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson was visibly frustrated on the sideline on multiple occasions during New York's 15-10 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 3. Running back Michael Carter was also shown yelling at Jets running backs coach Taylor Embree during Sunday's game.New York entered the 2023 season with Super Bowl aspirations after trading for Rodgers, but he went down with an Achilles injury in Week 1. However, Rodgers, still addressed the sideline incidents Tuesday, saying, "We need to hold our poise a little better." The 39-year-old added that the Jets "need to grow up," per Cimini."He's right, man, you can't blow up and show our frustration on the sideline," Jets cornerback D.J. Reed said."He's as much of a coach as he is a player, and he's been around youth and he's been around adversity, and he's seen it all," head coach Robert Saleh said of Rodgers' remarks. "So for him to recognize that and talk through it, I think he's not wrong in that when you have frustration, it's easy to look for answers when sometimes the most important answer is inward."Saleh continues to support Wilson, who's received a lot of criticism after completing just 52% of his passes while tossing two touchdowns to four interceptions in three appearances this season. New York signed veteran Trevor Siemian to the practice squad Tuesday, adding to a quarterback depth chart that also features Tim Boyle.Rodgers recently said he isn't ready to rule out a potential return in the playoffs, but the Jets don't expect the four-time NFL MVP to play again this season.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Saints' Kamara: 'It feels good to be back' after 3-game suspension
New Orleans Saints star running back Alvin Kamara is glad to be back on the team after missing the first three games of the season due to suspension."It's weird not playing," Kamara said Wednesday, according to Nola.com's Luke Johnson. "So obviously, it feels good to be back out there with teammates, and it feels good to be back out there running, moving around, finally get to play a game."The five-time Pro Bowler is eligible to play in Week 4 after missing the Saints' first three games for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Kamara reached a plea agreement in July to avoid facing a felony charge for his alleged role in a fight outside a Las Vegas nightclub in 2022."You don't just replace Alvin Kamara," quarterback Derek Carr said about the tailback's influence on the Saints' offense. It's unclear if Carr will return for Sunday's contest after he sprained the AC joint in his throwing shoulder during last Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers.New Orleans also placed running back Jamaal Williams on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury. Kamara is expected to regain his role as a starter among a stable of runners that includes Tony Jones Jr. and Kendre Miller."There's some things I do that opens up our offense a little more - for everybody, not just for me," Kamara said. The 28-year-old tallied at least 1,300 scrimmage yards in each of his six seasons with the Saints.New Orleans is averaging 314.7 total yards per game (20th in NFL) and 3.41 yards per carry average (27th in NFL).Kamara and the Saints will host NFC South rivals the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jerry Jones: Cowboys' red-zone issues 'not a long-range concern'
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes it's only a matter of time until his team fixes its red-zone issues."The thing we need to zero in on is when we get that ball down in there close, we've got to get touchdowns," Jones said Wednesday, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "And that's probably across the board over these last three ball games. We got a long time to go in this season. We got a lot of room to really adjust and correct these things. While it is something to note, it's not a long-range concern."The Cowboys have scored a touchdown in just 40% of their red-zone trips so far this season, which ties for the fourth-lowest mark in the NFL.Dallas went 3-for-4 in the red zone in their 40-0 victory over the New York Giants in Week 4. The team, however, has since struggled in those situations, going 2-for-6 in a Week 2 win versus the New York Jets and 1-for-5 in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3.The Cowboys made big offensive changes during the offseason, parting ways with offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and running back Ezekiel Elliott, among other moves. Elliott averaged just 3.8 yards per carry with Dallas in 2022 - a career single-season low for him - but finished the campaign with 12 rushing touchdowns, all of which came inside the opponent's 15-yard line."Zeke's unique physicalness is always nice to have, not to be trite about it, it's very good to have," Jones said. "We think of physical on short yardage and probably should, but I don't think that physicalness from the running back is contributing to us not getting the end zone. It is not."Elliott, now a member of the New England Patriots, will visit the Cowboys in Week 4.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Dolphins' McDaniel not thinking revenge ahead of Week 4 vs. Bills
Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday that his team isn't thinking about getting payback on the Buffalo Bills after their playoff matchup last season. He added that Miami doesn't need extra motivation ahead of the highly anticipated AFC East showdown in Week 4."If you need to be motivated for a game like this, check your pulse," McDaniel said, according to ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques. "Or maybe consider a career adjustment."He added: "I think it's a very, very difficult challenge that I think our players are pumped for because you sign up to play the best, and I think (the Bills) fit that."Following a historic 70-20 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 3, the 3-0 Dolphins lead the NFL in most offensive categories, including total points and yards. Meanwhile, the Bills' offense ranks second in scoring. Buffalo also boasts the league's No. 2 defense after allowing only 11.7 points per game through the first three weeks of the season.Sean McDermott's outfit is coming off a 37-3 win in which the team forced five turnovers and amassed nine sacks against the Washington Commanders."They're very well-orchestrated with their assignments and knowing each other's assignments," McDaniel said of the 2-1 Bills. "They play great team ball and they really strain each and every play. Part of that straining doesn't show up in the box score, but a couple of those turnovers were a result of quarterback pressure and a guy having to let it go before he wanted to, before he saw things."That's what they rely on and they're very good at it. And that's a great way to win a lot of football games, which they've done doing that."Buffalo took down Miami in the wild-card game in January. Miami, however, played that 34-31 loss with quarterback Skylar Thompson replacing Tua Tagovailoa, who was in concussion protocol at the time. During the 2022 regular season, the Tagovailoa-led Dolphins split their series with the Bills.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Titans' Skoronski ruptured appendix, not expected to play vs. Bengals
Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Peter Skoronski suffered a ruptured appendix on Sept. 16, he said Wednesday, according to Turron Davenport of ESPN.Skoronski had an emergency appendectomy but said he's "doing fine." The 22-year-old has missed the last two games and isn't expected to suit up Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, Davenport adds."It's frustrating," Skoronski said. "You want to be on the field as soon as possible, but you also don't want to be out there in a position where you can't do the right thing for your team."Skoronski said he's lost weight while recovering from the surgery. He's now gradually doing weight training and conditioning work, Titans coach Mike Vrabel said.Dillon Radunz and Xavier Newman have filled in at left guard for Skoronski. Patriots' Elliott focused on getting win ahead of return to Dallas
Running back Ezekiel Elliott is taking a calm approach ahead of the New England Patriots' matchup against his former team, the Dallas Cowboys, on Sunday."I'm very appreciative of the time I spent in Dallas, but once again, I'm focused on getting a win," Elliott said, according to MassLive's Mark Daniels.Elliott is set to square off against his former club for the first time after spending seven seasons with the Cowboys. He signed a one-year contract with the Patriots in August."It's just another week for me. Not gonna make it bigger than it is," he said, per the Boston Herald's Andrew Callahan. The Ohio State product ranks third on the Cowboys' all-time list with 8,262 rushing yards and 68 rushing touchdowns behind Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett. He also recorded 205 catches for 2,336 yards and 12 scores during his time with the team. The three-time Pro Bowl tailback didn't go into detail about his departure from the Cowboys, who released him in March. Dallas opted to roll with Tony Pollard as its starting halfback after he posted 1,378 scrimmage yards and 12 total scores in 2022."I was definitely disappointed but everything happens for a reason," he said Sunday, per ESPN's Mike Reiss. "God has his plan for us. I'm excited for this next chapter in my life. I'm excited to be a Patriot, I'm excited to go chase a Super Bowl here."Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones hinted that the Cowboys plan to honor the former 2016 first-round pick in some form on Sunday."I know that he was one of the best teammates that I've had the privilege of seeing on the Cowboys," Jones said, according to Joey Haden of The Dallas Morning News.Elliott recorded a season-high 80 yards on 16 carries in New England's Week 3 win over the New York Jets. He's rushed for 122 yards through the Patriots' first three games while backing up starter Rhamondre Stevenson. While Elliott maintains that he'll try to be even keel ahead of his return, he admits that he's motivated by the Cowboys' decision not to re-sign him."I think that's every week," Elliott said.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Chiefs' Kelce: Win vs. Bears in front of Taylor Swift a 'game I'll remember'
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce won't soon forget the team's 41-10 victory over the Chicago Bears with pop star Taylor Swift cheering him on at Arrowhead Stadium."To see the slow-motion chest bumps, to see the high-fives with Mom, to see how Chiefs Kingdom was all excited that she was there. That shit was absolutely hysterical," Kelce said on Wednesday's episode of the "New Heights" podcast.Kelce invited Swift to watch the team play, and she took in Sunday's game with Kelce's mom in his personal suite."Shoutout to Taylor for pulling up," Kelce said. "That was pretty ballsy. ..."I just thought it was awesome how everybody in the suite had nothing but great things to say about her. She looked amazing. Everybody was talking about her in a great light. And on top of that, the day went perfect for Chiefs fans."He added, "It's definitely a game I'll remember, that's for damn sure."Kansas City was up 34-0 at halftime, and Kelce hauled in a 3-yard touchdown from quarterback Patrick Mahomes to extend the lead to 41-0 midway through the third quarter. Garrett Wilson asks Jets fans to 'stick with us'
New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson doesn't want Jets fans to give up on the team despite a tough start to the season."I would just tell them to stick with us," Wilson said, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk."No one wants this more than us. We're working every single day to make sure that y'all have a lot to root for on Sundays."Quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles on the Jets' first offensive drive of the year, and the Jets fell to 1-2 with Sunday's loss to the New England Patriots. They have now lost back-to-back games with Zach Wilson starting at quarterback."Our whole season had a big change in it (16) days ago. And then for us that was a big adjustment," Garrett Wilson said.He added: "We're still figuring it out offensively, and it's not just for us to put one dude on the dartboard, you know. Fields thinks Bears can make playoffs: 'We've got 14 left'
Justin Fields remains optimistic about the Chicago Bears' chances of making the playoffs despite their poor start to the season.Following the Bears' 41-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3, Fields said he believes Chicago can still turn things around and pointed to the 2022 Detroit Lions as an example."The Lions started 1-6 last year and they almost made the playoffs," Fields said, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "We've got 14 left, at least."After starting last season 1-6, the Lions went on to win eight of their next 10 games and remained in playoff contention until Week 18.The Bears fell to 0-3 with their loss to the Chiefs, but they have an opportunity to earn their first win of the season Sunday when they host the 0-3 Denver Broncos.Fields acknowledged that he "needs to be better," but he said he appreciates what he gets to do for a living."I'm looking at it like the big picture, just life in general," Fields explained. "I think this past week has had me kind of look at it like, what are the important things in life? ... I think these past couple of weeks have made me appreciate the little things in life, like being able to play this game."Every opportunity I get to go out there and play, I'm going to have fun. NFL Week 4 teasers: Stay hot by sticking to the basics
Back-to-back weeks of cashing a teaser is a great feeling. Let's stay hot on the teaser market in Week 4 and stick to our principles of crossing key numbers to create value.Last week, we had the Bills -1 and the Saints +8. There are a number of options this week to tease and earn similar results. As always, our weekly reminder: teasers provide value for bettors by capturing key winning margin numbers: three, six, and seven. It never makes sense to tease a game through zero because you lose valuable win probability. Games are hardly won by less than a field goal or end in a super-rare tie.Let's look at the Rams (+2) road game against the Colts to show how a teaser provides value.Alt. spreadOdds+3-147+4-180+5-203+6-241+7-301+8-354One leg of a two-team, six-point teaser is priced at -280, which is a better value than parlaying alternate spreads. As you can see above, the alternate spread of Rams +8 is priced at -354. But at +8 as a teaser leg, it's priced at -280.We need to find another teaser leg that crosses the key numbers to pair with Rams +8 to cash the two-team teaser. Let's look at our teaser basket to see what qualifies.Teaser BasketTeamOddsTeaser legPackers+1+7Rams+2+8Titans+2.5+8.5Dolphins+2.5+8.5Eagles-7.5-1.5Cowboys-7-1Seahawks+1.5+7.5Aside from the value we get by teasing the Rams, they are a good team that has competed amongst some of the top clubs in the league, including the 49ers and Bengals. They play the Colts on Sunday. Indy looks good but is overvalued after an upset win over the Ravens last week. There are other decent options to include in the teaser, like the Packers at home on Thursday Night Football or the Eagles at home against a divisional opponent. But let's go with the Cowboys at -1. The regular spread is a touchdown, so teasing it down so the Cowboys simply have to beat the Patriots is worth it. Dallas is coming off a shocking loss to the Cardinals and will be motivated at home. New England has been competitive in every game, but its only win was against the dysfunctional Jets, and it barely escaped. The Patriots have a stout defense, but their offense is stale, and the Cowboys' defense should pounce on it.Lock in the Cowboys -1 and Rams +8 to give us a third consecutive win.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. Bucs' Bowles: Rachaad White tried to make 'too many big plays' vs. Eagles
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said he could've gotten more out of Rachaad White on Monday night, saying the running back needs to change his approach in certain games."We've got to stay on our blocks a little longer, and obviously, it goes hand in hand," Bowles said Tuesday, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times."Rachaad has got to hit it. I think he tried to make too many big plays when it was a grind-out type of game. You're not going to get big plays on these guys."The Buccaneers struggled to get anything going on the ground against the Eagles. White carried the ball 14 times for 38 yards and zero touchdowns, good for 2.7 yards per rush. Tampa Bay picked up only one rushing first down all night.Philadelphia has been a tough team to run against through three weeks, leading the league in rushing yards allowed per game. However, Tampa Bay rushed for 120 yards in its Week 2 victory against the Chicago Bears."You've got to start hitting it up in there, getting 2, 3 and 4 yards and hoping you're going to break one later on," Bowles added."But he probably had too many cuts trying to make an explosive play, something out of nothing, as opposed to taking what they give him. Then, given the magnitude of the game, knowing it was going to be one of those games, he can get better that way, and he will."White has 150 yards and one touchdown on 48 carries this season. Chargers' Staley: Johnston's role will expand after Williams' injury
The Los Angeles Chargers are going to give first-round rookie wide receiver Quentin Johnston more opportunities after the team lost Mike Williams to an ACL tear this week."We believe in the ability of (Johnston) and we believe in the makeup of this guy," head coach Brandon Staley said Monday, according to NFL.com's Grant Gordon. "Now, he is going to get a bigger opportunity."The Bolts selected Johnston with the 21st pick in April's draft after he tallied 60 receptions, 1,069 yards, and six touchdowns in his final college campaign with TCU."We drafted Quentin with the belief in the player," said Staley. "All he needs to continue to do is ... make progress on the field. Over time, he's going to make more and more plays for us."Johnston has posted just five receptions for 26 yards on eight targets through three games. He has been on the field for just 22% of the offensive snaps while playing behind Williams, top wideout Keenan Allen, and Josh Palmer to begin the year. The 22-year-old could also see extra targets if running back Austin Ekeler misses more time with the ankle injury that sidelined him for the team's 28-24 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday."We have a lot of good options on our team - obviously, Quentin, being the first guy that is going to emerge in a bigger role. ... Everyone is going to have to elevate their game, and it's not just the receiving group, it's going to be that tight end group and running back group, as well," Staley said.Los Angeles will host the 1-2 Las Vegas Raiders in Week 4. Kaepernick pens letter to Jets GM for practice squad opportunity
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick wrote a letter to New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas asking for an opportunity to lead the practice squad, according to rap artist J. Cole, who shared the document Tuesday on Instagram."I know that there are currently depth issues at the position, and I've heard that the back-up spot is likely to be filled by a veteran quarterback," Kaepernick wrote in the letter dated Sept. 21. "As much as I would love the opportunity to fill that spot, I'm writing you in hopes that you can imagine a much different approach involving me. I would be honored and extremely grateful for the opportunity to come in and lead the practice squad. I would do this with the sole mission of getting your defense ready each week."Cole said on Instagram that Kaepernick was initially reluctant to let him share the letter.
Jets sign veteran QB Siemian
The New York Jets are adding a quarterback after all.Veteran signal-caller Trevor Siemian is signing to the team's practice squad, the team announced Tuesday. The 31-year-old arrives as the Jets struggle to get quality production from the quarterback position in the wake of Aaron Rodgers' season-ending Achilles tear. Since Rodgers went down in Week 1, former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson has completed 52.4% of his passes for two touchdowns and four interceptions.New York has lost both games that Wilson started, but head coach Robert Saleh said Monday that the team would stick with Wilson and that he wasn't the reason the team lost Sunday against the New England Patriots.Siemian is no stranger to the Jets, having spent the 2019 season with the franchise. Rodgers: Jets need to hold poise amid offensive struggles
Warning: Video contains coarse languageInjured star quarterback Aaron Rodgers wants to see his New York Jets teammates stick together following two straight losses."This is what teams have to go through," Rodgers said Tuesday on "The Pat McAfee Show." "There's adversity points in every season. This year it's happening early and people are coming for us and there are some heated conversations on the sideline and different things."I think we need to hold our poise a little better, really just offensively. We need to not have some of those things happening on the sideline, and to be a little better, and to be a little better competitors."Jets receiver Garrett Wilson and running back Michael Carter were visibly frustrated on the sideline during Sunday's matchup against the Patriots. The four-time league MVP is calling for calm at a time when his replacement, Zach Wilson, is under fire. The 24-year-old has filled in for Rodgers, who is expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon.Wilson has struggled to spark the offense. He completed 18 of 36 passes for 157 yards with a 61.9 passer rating in Sunday's loss to the New England Patriots. The former second overall pick has a 52.4% completion rate, two touchdowns, four interceptions, and has been sacked eight times to begin his 2023 campaign.New York is reportedly signing veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian to its practice squad on Tuesday. The Jets sport a 1-2 record, with the lone win coming in their season-opening game against the Buffalo Bills. New York has struggled without Rodgers, scoring just 10 points in losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Patriots, and ranks last in the league in both points per game (14) and yards per contest (225).Rodgers admitted that it's been hard to watch the Jets from a distance as he continues his rehab."I miss the guys, miss the leadership opportunity, miss balling, competing," he said.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Stroud - despite his odds lengthening.Robinson has been the focal point of a Falcons offense dealing with inconsistent quarterback play. He's accumulated 213 rushing yards on 39 carries, good for 5.5 yards per carry. He's also utilized in the passing game, catching 14 passes for over 100 yards and a touchdown. He's been exactly what the Falcons expected when they drafted him No. 8 overall. The only reason Robinson's odds lengthened is because No. 2 overall pick Stroud has been putting up monster numbers for the Texans. He's thrown for 906 yards, including 384 yards in a Week 2 loss. He's also completing 64.5% of his passes. However, the most impressive stat is he hasn't thrown an interception. The Texans are a young team, but they may have found their signal-caller for the foreseeable future. If Stroud continues putting up these performances, he might walk away with the award.Bryce Young had the second-best odds before the year, but they plummeted after two poor performances and an injury that kept him out of Week 3. Young doesn't deserve all the blame. The Panthers' offensive line is a disaster, and the receivers aren't exactly world-class. However, that doesn't absolve Young from the fact he's looked uncomfortable as a passer, and his height as the shortest starting quarterback in the NFL seems to be an issue.Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson remains a mystery after suffering a concussion early on in his second game. But he did show promise in his debut. The 2023 draft was expected to produce a plethora of star receivers, but we've yet to see much from the group. First-rounders Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Jordan Addison were tied for the best odds among receivers. Their odds lengthened after pedestrian performances through three weeks. Puka Nacua was drafted in the fifth round by the Rams and has become the NFL's darling, coming out of nowhere to emerge as a top Rookie of the Year candidate. He set the record for most catches in a rookie's first two games (25) and has the second-most receptions and fourth-most yards of all NFL wideouts.Quentin Johnston - another first-round receiver - isn't on the list above because his odds are so long due to disappointing production. He was +2000 to win before the season and is +7500 now. However, Chargers star receiver Mike Williams - one of Justin Herbert's top options - is out for the season, leaving room for Johnston to earn a greater share of targets. He may not win it, but he has a chance to move down the board. Defensive Rookie of the Year odds PlayerCurrent oddsOdds prior to seasonJalen Carter+150+600Will Anderson Jr.+600+400Christian Gonzalez+1000+900Brian Branch+2200+2000Emmanuel Forbes+2200+1500Devon Witherspoon+2500+900Ivan Pace Jr.+2500N/ALukas Van Ness+2500+1500Tyree Wilson+2500+800Will McDonald IV+2500+2500Before the season, we gave defensive tackle Jalen Carter the nod to win Defensive Rookie of the Year at +600. Anyone who listened has tremendous value, as he's currently +150 to win.The Eagles' standout isn't just one of the best rookie linemen; he's one of the best interior linemen in the entire league. Through three games, Carter has 1.5 sacks, five combined tackles, two forced fumbles, two quarterback hits, two tackles for loss, 15 pressures (second among all defensive tackles), and six pressures when double-teamed (second in the NFL).Oh, and all of that has come while playing less than 50% of the teams' snaps as the Eagles slowly ramp up his workload with a deep defensive line unit.Carter fell to No. 9 overall in April's draft for obvious off-the-field issues. As long as those don't persist, Philadelphia got an absolute steal.
Packers' Watson expects to make 2023 debut vs. Lions on TNF
More help is coming for Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers offense.Wide receiver Christian Watson expects to make his first appearance of the 2023 season on Thursday night against the Detroit Lions."That's the plan," Watson said Tuesday, according to The Athletic's Matt Schneidman.Watson missed the first three games of the campaign with a hamstring injury. The 2022 second-round pick led the Packers in receiving touchdowns during his rookie year with seven. He also caught 41 passes for 611 yards.Green Bay enters Thursday's prime-time contest with a 2-1 record after using an 18-point unanswered run to beat the New Orleans Saints in Week 3. The Lions are also 2-1.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Week 3 betting market report: How bettors perceived all 32 teams
The betting public cleaned up on the NFL this weekend. Favorites and popular underdogs came through with few exceptions, often in blowouts, but are the Dolphins, Bills, and Eagles really a collective 98 points better than the Broncos, Commanders, and Buccaneers? Of course not - even if they were on Sunday and Monday night. We'll see next week whether those blowouts accentuate a burgeoning divide between the haves and have-nots in the NFL. For now, we can only assess what the market thought of all 32 teams before the games kicked off.How ratings workEvery week, we'll look at what the betting market thinks of each team based on the closing lines from that week's games. The "rating" column is an educated guess at the oddsmakers' rating to create a point spread, with the specific number being the percentage chance that the team beats an average opponent on a neutral field. Ratings aren't rankings. The closing line is considered a better reflection of a team's value than one 60-minute game. The range column is my evaluation of what each team is capable of. It's our job as handicappers to determine where within its range a team will play based on things like the situation, on-field matchups, and roster/injury issues. The earlier it is in the season, the wider range a team may have.Market ratings and our rangeTEAMRATINGRANGE49ers7560-80Chiefs7560-80Cowboys7160-80Eagles6960-80Bills6655-75Dolphins6450-70Ravens6050-70Chargers5750-70Lions5545-65Browns5540-60Jaguars5450-70Saints5440-60Vikings5335-55Bengals4855-75Broncos4840-60Patriots4835-55Falcons4835-55Titans4835-55Seahawks4640-60Raiders4630-50Packers4440-60Steelers4340-60Rams4335-55Giants4240-60Buccaneers4125-45Commanders4035-55Colts3825-45Panthers3630-50Bears3425-45Jets3330-50Texans3325-45Cardinals2220-40Key ratings adjustmentsThe Chiefs might actually be 31 points better than the Bears. That statement's somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but Kansas City's Week 2 win in Jacksonville did nudge it up a tick to join the 49ers atop the league's market ratings. The Cowboys got a big boost for smoking the Jets, but it's funny how it works sometimes: Significant adjustments often cause a team to be favored by a point or two too much, and then the team loses against the (inflated) spread. That wasn't the case in Arizona, where the Cardinals beat Dallas convincingly and the spread never came into play. Expect the Cowboys' rating to fall back to where it was to start the season.Speaking of adjustments, that sound you heard last week was the Bengals' rating plummeting after a second loss and concern about Joe Burrow's health. As a result, Cincinnati was just a three-point favorite at home to the Rams. Put another way, the point spread suggested a preseason Super Bowl contender was barely better than a team projected to win six games. Of course, unless you bought the Bengals low at under a field goal, you suffered a backdoor push - despite recognizing that Cincinnati's rating had overcorrected below our range floor, even taking a hobbled Burrow into account. The betting market did not like the Chargers blowing another game in Week 2, dropping their rating enough to make them underdogs while visiting the 0-2 Vikings. Los Angeles won, but that game couldn't have been more of a coin flip, and it's hard to argue that adjustment was wrong going forward. The easiest way to understand how these market ratings have changed from last week is to consider whether a team lost its most recent game or has significant injury issues. But there are exceptions. Although the Steelers won Monday night of Week 2 versus the Browns, the Raiders took money moving Week 3's Sunday night game from Pittsburgh -1 to Las Vegas -3, and it wasn't because the market was attracted to the Raiders' blowout loss in Buffalo.Nothing that happened Sunday slowed the Jets' and Bears' race to the bottom. It's only a matter of time before they pass the Texans and Cardinals, who are unequivocally not the worst teams in the NFL. If Houston and Arizona continue to be rated as such, make subsequent bets accordingly.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. If there's a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Hurts used playoff loss to Bucs as fuel: 'It's a feeling I haven't forgot'
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts used the wild-card playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022 as motivation for their Monday night game."It's a feeling I haven't forgot," Hurts said, according to Tim McManus of ESPN. "And things have gone very well ever since."The Eagles lost 31-15 to the Buccaneers in Hurts' first season as Philadelphia's starting quarterback. It was an ugly performance from the 25-year-old, which resulted in a Tampa Bay coach calling him out for his ability to read a defense.
NFL Power Rankings - Week 4: Every team's best newcomer
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors. This week, we identify the best new face on each team three games into the season.1. Miami Dolphins (3-0) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 4De'Von Achane didn't have an impact on Miami's first two games, but the rookie running back showed how valuable he can be in Week 3. He racked up 233 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns to help the Dolphins earn a historic win.2. San Francisco 49ers (3-0)Previous Rank: 2Javon Hargrave is already showing why San Francisco gave him an $84-million deal this past offseason. Hargrave has amassed two sacks and is PFF's third-best interior lineman after three weeks.3. Philadelphia Eagles (3-0)Previous Rank: 3There was no doubting Jalen Carter's talent heading into the draft. The Georgia product had a sack and two tackles for loss entering Monday night, where he added another half sack and helped force a fumble.4. Kansas City Chiefs (2-1)Previous Rank: 5With 10 catches so far this season, Rashee Rice leads all Kansas City wide receivers in that category. The second-round rookie, who's caught 108 yards and a touchdown, also tops the team with seven receiving first downs.5. Buffalo Bills (2-1) Greg Fiume / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 7Pass rush was an area of concern for the Bills in the offseason with Von Miller still sidelined due to injury. However, edge rusher Leonard Floyd has been solid since joining the team in June, having recorded a team-high 3.5 sacks.6. Dallas Cowboys (2-1)Previous Rank: 1The offseason trade for cornerback Stephon Gilmore became even more important for Dallas after Trevon Diggs recently suffered a season-ending injury. Gilmore isn't in his prime anymore, but the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year still gives the Cowboys a veteran corner with solid coverage skills.7. Baltimore Ravens (2-1)Previous Rank: 6It's easy to see why Baltimore used a first-round pick on Zay Flowers, who's been a big part of the club's offense this season. He's the only Ravens player with over 15 targets, 10 receptions, or 150 receiving yards so far.8. Cincinnati Bengals (1-2)Previous Rank: 8Cincinnati returned plenty of starters from last year, but Orlando Brown Jr. has been a solid addition. The mammoth left tackle has mostly kept Joe Burrow's blindside clean.9. Seattle Seahawks (2-1)Previous Rank: 9Bobby Wagner's return to Seattle is one of the NFL's best storylines this year. Although the Seahawks' defense is still a work in progress, the 33-year-old is PFF's 11th-best linebacker and has already racked up 33 tackles.10. Detroit Lions (2-1) Gregory Shamus / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 10As expected, landing defensive back Brian Branch in the second round is starting to look like a big steal for the Lions. He leads the team with three tackles for loss, three pass breakups, an interception, and a defensive touchdown.11. Cleveland Browns (2-1)Previous Rank: 12Don't let Za'Darius Smith's zero sacks fool you. The veteran edge rusher has taken some attention off Myles Garrett while helping the Browns boast one of football's premier defenses. Smith ranks second on the team with nine pressures.12. Los Angeles Chargers (1-2)Previous Rank: 16The Justin Herbert-led Chargers offense looks better with coordinator Kellen Moore, as it ranks third in passing yards and fifth in points so far. More importantly, the club has scored a touchdown in 66.7% of its red-zone trips in 2023, up from 53.2% last year.13. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-1)Previous Rank: 15The Steelers made Cole Holcomb the face of their linebacker overhaul this offseason. So far it's worked out as Holcomb has already forced more turnovers than the entire position group last year.14. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2)Previous Rank: 11Things have cooled off since Calvin Ridley exploded for eight catches, 101 yards, and a touchdown in Week 1, but the receiver continues to be given opportunities. Ridley has seven or more targets in all 3 games this year.15. Atlanta Falcons (2-1) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 17Bijan Robinson is averaging over 100 scrimmage yards per game and 5.9 yards per touch, but we'd be remiss to not mention Jessie Bates and his three interceptions, too.16. Green Bay Packers (2-1)Previous Rank: 19Everyone knew the Packers needed to add weapons in the offseason, and it's looking like Jayden Reed is a good one. The rookie wideout has nine catches for a team-high 148 yards. He's also scored a pair of touchdowns.17. New Orleans Saints (2-1)Previous Rank: 13Quarterback stability has been difficult for the Saints to find in the post-Drew Brees era, but Derek Carr looks to be providing exactly that. New Orleans giving up a 17-0 lead against the Packers after Carr left the team's Week 3 game highlights his importance.18. Indianapolis Colts (2-1)Previous Rank: 27New head coach Shane Steichen has put Anthony Richardson in a position to succeed so far. Richardson has 279 passing yards and 75 rushing yards, and he's been responsible for four of the team's seven touchdowns despite missing Week 3 with a concussion.19. Washington Commanders (2-1)Previous Rank: 18The game against the Bills was ugly, but Eric Bieniemy looks like he could be one of the offseason's best hires. Bieniemy has found ways to get Brian Robinson going often, with the tailback currently sixth in rushing.20. New England Patriots (1-2) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 25Christian Gonzalez has been outstanding for the Patriots thus far. The rookie corner has an interception, three pass breakups, a sack, and an 84.4 PFF grade.21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1)Previous Rank: 22Baker Mayfield has been a pleasant surprise at the game's most important position. His statistical production hasn't been remarkable, but his toughness and grit have helped the Bucs pick up a pair of early wins.22. New York Jets (1-2)Previous Rank: 14Joe Tippmann made his first career start in Week 3 and played 100% of the team's snaps. The rookie center didn't allow a sack, hit, or pressure, per PFF. The Jets have lacked that kind of consistency on the offensive line for seemingly forever.23. Los Angeles Rams (1-2)Previous Rank: 23If the Rams are throwing the ball, the pass is probably going to Puka Nacua. The fifth-round pick has already posted 30 receptions, shattering the record for the most catches through a player's first three career games.24. New York Giants (1-2)Previous Rank: 20Despite investments in the wide receiver position, Darren Waller is operating as the team's top pass-catcher. The tight end leads the Giants in targets (20), receptions (12), and yards (132).25. Tennessee Titans (1-2) Alika Jenner / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 21Cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting has been a playmaker in an otherwise lackluster secondary. The 26-year-old has three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and an 84.1 coverage grade, per PFF.26. Minnesota Vikings (0-3)Previous Rank: 24Despite the Vikings' winless start, Jordan Addison has looked like an excellent No. 2 wide receiver. He's hauled in 13 catches for 185 yards and two touchdowns thus far.27. Houston Texans (1-2)Previous Rank: 30The future is suddenly bright in Houston. C.J. Stroud has been the best rookie passer through three games, and it's not particularly close. The Texans got a good one.28. Arizona Cardinals (1-2)Previous Rank: 31New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing has been a key factor in Arizona's surprisingly competitive start. He's done a much better job than former head coach Kliff Kingsbury at creating opportunities for his playmakers.29. Las Vegas Raiders (1-2)Previous Rank: 26Jakobi Meyers has been one of the few bright spots amid an otherwise frustrating start for the Raiders. He's in a position to feast as the WR2 opposite Davante Adams.30. Carolina Panthers (0-3) Jared C. Tilton / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 28The Panthers should've done a better job of surrounding their rookie quarterback with playmakers, but Adam Thielen is doing his part. His 11-catch, 145-yard performance last week confirmed that he's still a reliable playmaker.31. Chicago Bears (0-3)Previous Rank: 32D.J. Moore has easily been Chicago's best and most important newcomer through three games. Whether this offense finds a way to utilize him properly is a different matter.32. Denver Broncos (0-3)Previous Rank: 29Rookie wideout Marvin Mims Jr. is already establishing himself as Denver's best vertical target. His kick return touchdown was the lone positive from an embarrassing 70-20 loss in Miami.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Saints' Carr week-to-week with sprained AC joint
New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is week-to-week with a sprained AC joint, head coach Dennis Allen confirmed Monday.Allen did not close the door on Carr potentially playing in Week 4 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite the shoulder injury."I think we dodged a bullet there in terms of anything of real significance," Allen told reporters. Allen added, "He felt better today than he did yesterday. So, we're not making any decisions today. We're not ruling anything out. We'll see where he's at as the week goes on."Despite Allen's unwillingness to rule Carr out, the team will be cautious with the signal-caller, and it would be surprising if Carr played in Week 4, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Carr was unable to finish Sunday's 18-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers after going down hard on his shoulder on a third-quarter hit.The 32-year-old led New Orleans to a 17-0 lead after completing 13 of 18 pass attempts for 103 yards and one touchdown. However, the Saints were unable to score after his departure and allowed 18 unanswered points. If Carr can't play in Week 4, Jameis Winston will likely fill in. Winston came in for the veteran Sunday and completed 10 of 16 passes for 101 yards.Carr, a free-agent addition this offseason, guided the Saints to a 2-0 start before the Week 3 loss.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jets legend Joe Namath blasts Zach Wilson: 'I've seen enough'
New York Jets legend Joe Namath doesn't agree with the team's decision to stick with Zach Wilson as the starting quarterback.Namath - a Hall of Fame quarterback who led the Jets to a Super Bowl title in 1969 - strongly criticized Wilson on Monday after New York's 15-10 home loss to the New England Patriots."I didn't take anything positive out of it. It was awful," Namath said about Wilson's performance, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. He added: "I wouldn't keep him. I've seen enough of Zach Wilson."Wilson became the Jets' starter this season after Aaron Rodgers went down with an Achilles injury in Week 1. He completed just 18 of 36 pass attempts for 157 yards versus New England. The 24-year-old also took three sacks, including one in which he seemingly went down without being touched on the play."You sit down on a play? You go right down? What happened?" Namath said. "I thought you're trying to win and make plays. You quit on a play? What is going on? It's disgusting."
Burrow active for MNF vs. Rams
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is active for Monday night's matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, the team announced.Burrow has been bothered by a calf injury in the buildup to the Super Bowl LVI rematch. He ended the week as questionable after practicing in a limited capacity Friday and Saturday. The 26-year-old will be less than 100% for Monday's game due to the ailment, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Burrow originally strained his calf in late July before aggravating it in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens.Jake Browning is the No. 2 quarterback on Cincinnati's depth chart. The Bengals also signed veteran quarterback AJ McCarron, who began his career in Cincinnati, to their practice squad Saturday.Cincinnati will be without tight end Irv Smith Jr. on Monday due to a hamstring issue. The Bengals' offense has struggled over the course of the team's 0-2 start. Burrow has competed just 56.9% of his passes for two touchdowns and one interception.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Vikings' O'Connell: Players will be benched if turnovers continue
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell issued a public warning Monday that players could find themselves on the bench if they don't protect the football."I think that's something we're going to fix one way or the other," O'Connell said, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert. "Either guys are going to (fix) it, or we're going to have to put other guys in the game that have ball security."The Vikings committed nine turnovers through three games, all losses. Running back Alexander Mattison has struggled with ball security after several fumbles over the last two weeks, though only one stood after review. Kirk Cousins has also thrown two interceptions, including a game-ending pick in the end zone during Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers."We need to end every snap with the football in our hands," O'Connell said.Minnesota sits at 0-3 on the season with a turnover differential of minus-7.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Belichick jokes Swift 'would be the biggest' catch of Kelce's career
Taylor Swift stole the show Sunday by appearing at Arrowhead Stadium to support Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, her rumored new love interest. The Swiftie fandom is so strong that it even got the notoriously stoic Bill Belichick to share his thoughts on the new power couple."I would say that Travis Kelce has had a lot of big catches in his career. This would be the biggest," the New England Patriots head coach joked during a Monday appearance on "The Greg Hill Show."
Seahawks' Adams set to return for MNF game against Giants
Safety Jamal Adams is set to make his 2023 debut when the Seattle Seahawks play the New York Giants on Monday Night Football on Oct. 2, head coach Pete Carroll said Monday, according to the News Tribune's Gregg Bell. The Week 4 matchup will mark Adams' first game in over a year after he sustained a torn quadriceps tendon in the 2022 season opener against the Denver Broncos. The injury wiped out the rest of that campaign for the star.Seattle has gradually increased Adams' activities at practice in hopes that he'll be available for the team's next 14 games and beyond, reports Bell.Injuries have hampered Adams over the past few seasons. The former first-team All-Pro has missed 29.5 contests since being acquired by the Seahawks in a trade with the New York Jets in 2020. Adams signed a four-year, $70.58-million contract extension with Seattle in August 2021.The 27-year-old provided immediate versatility in the Seahawks' defense after he arrived, setting a league record for sacks by a defensive back with 9.5 in 2020. However, Adams began blitzing less and playing more in coverage the following season. With Seattle signing Julian Love this offseason to pair with Quandre Diggs in the secondary, Adams could revive his role as a hybrid defender who plays closer to the line of scrimmage. The Seahawks' three-safety scheme is set to provide an added dimension to defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt's system.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Broncos' Payton promises to get 'ship straightened' after blowout loss
Broncos head coach Sean Payton believes he has what it takes to get Denver pointed the right way after Sunday's historic 70-20 blowout loss to the Miami Dolphins."First off to the fans: We're going to work our tail off and get this ship straightened away," Payton said Monday. "That's going to happen. There's going to be a process involved in that. Certainly, there's a lot of work ahead of us."The Dolphins put up an NFL-record 726 total yards Sunday and had a chance to break the league's single-game scoring record of 72 points in the fourth quarter but elected to kneel on fourth down rather than kick a field goal.Payton said there'll be no changes to the coaching staff in response to the lopsided defeat. Denver is 0-3 to start the season."This is one of those weeks where you take a butt-whooping like that, you find out a lot about everyone," Payton explained. "It's a tough film to watch. I debated whether we were going to show it or not, but I think we'd be remiss if we didn't."We've got to sit in here, and today - as unpleasant as it's going to be - we have to get these things cleaned up. We played a good offense, but we certainly didn't help ourselves in any way, shape or form in playing them."He credited the special teams unit for playing well but criticized the offense's three turnovers and the defense's inability to set the edge.Denver and Cincinnati are the only two winless teams remaining in the AFC, though the Bengals play Monday night.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Raiders' Garoppolo in concussion protocol following SNF loss
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is in the concussion protocol following Sunday night's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Josh McDaniels announced Monday, according to Vic Tafur of The Athletic.Garoppolo wasn't evaluated for a concussion during the game and played throughout. He was assessed after the Week 3 contest.McDaniels said he didn't know what hit may have caused Garoppolo's injury and there was no discussion in the fourth quarter about the quarterback potentially having a concussion. The veteran signal-caller threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns against three interceptions during the prime-time matchup. His six picks through three games lead the NFL.If Garoppolo is unable to play in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Raiders would turn to either Brian Hoyer or rookie Aidan O'Connell.Garoppolo has a long injury history. He underwent foot surgery in March that sidelined him during some of the Raiders' offseason program. He also suffered season-ending injuries in both 2018 (torn ACL) and 2020 (high ankle sprain) and has had a host of other minor ailments throughout his career. The 31-year-old signed with the Raiders as a free agent this offseason to replace longtime starter Derek Carr and reunite with McDaniels, whom he worked alongside with the New England Patriots for three seasons to begin his career. He spent the last six years with the San Francisco 49ers, starting 55 games and throwing for 82 touchdowns against 42 interceptions. He led the NFC West club to a Super Bowl appearance in 2019.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
MNF betting storylines: Clash of undefeated teams, uncertainty at QB
We've got another doubleheader on Monday Night Football with the Eagles and Buccaneers overlapping the Bengals and Rams.As always, for a more traditional breakdown and best bets, betting analyst Matt Russell has you covered. Here, we'll break down some storylines and specials theScore Bet is offering.Battle of undefeated teamsThe Eagles and Buccaneers are both 2-0 headed into their Monday Night Football contest. Although the NFC squads are off to hot starts, each team's frame of mind is in a different spot. The Bucs entered the season projected to be one of the worst teams in the league, but wins over the Vikings and Bears have them as an early surprise. The Eagles, on the other hand, were expected to be 2-0 as the favorite in the NFC, but their wins haven't been pretty. The standard, especially offensively, hasn't lived up to what many around the league expected from Philadelphia after last season's Super Bowl appearance.Everyone should remember it's early, and both of these teams could go in a completely different direction than what their early season success indicates. The only thing we know is that one of these teams is adding to the win column while the other suffers its first loss. The Eagles are five-point road favorites with the total set at 44.5.While Philadelphia's passing attack has struggled, the Eagles' run game has been effective. Behind a dominant offensive line, the team is averaging the second-most rushing yards per game.D'Andre Swift is the lead back, but Kenneth Gainwell is expected to return from injury to join Swift in the backfield.Baker Mayfield's attempt to revive his career in Tampa Bay is off to an encouraging start. He's thrown for just under 500 passing yards, three touchdowns, and no picks through two games.Monday night's matchup isn't expected to be a pass-heavy affair, but theScore Bet is offering many specials to bet on Mayfield and Jalen Hurts' performances.Mayfield and Hurts to record over 274.5 passing yards is +900 (bet $10 to win $90). Hurts has yet to break 200 passing yards this season. For them to each throw over 1.5 passing touchdowns is +300.If you like the Bucs to win outright as a home underdog and think Mayfield will carry them there, Tampa Bay to win and Mayfield to throw over 1.5 passing yards is +375.Eagles receiver A.J. Brown and Bucs receiver Chris Godwin - each the quarterback's top target - have yet to find the end zone this season. For them to both score a touchdown is +725.Burrow or No Burrow? There's one main storyline for the Bengals and Rams' prime-time showdown: Will Joe Burrow play? His status is currently uncertain due to a calf injury that's bothered him the first two weeks. The market's line reflects Burrow's questionable status, as the Bengals are only 2.5-point favorites against the Rams.Recent reports suggest there's "optimism" he will play, but no decision has been made. Burrow's injury has obviously limited him, which in turn has hurt his team. The Bengals are a surprising 0-2 and, with or without Burrow, are in a must-win situation. Dropping to 0-3 with an injured Burrow is much different than when the Bengals started 1-2 last season. Since 1979, just six teams have made the playoffs after starting 0-3.If Burrow can't go, rookie Jake Browning will assume starting responsibilities against a feisty and well-coached Rams squad. Los Angeles started with an impressive win over the Seahawks and a narrow loss to the 49ers, proving its roster is good enough to at least compete for a playoff spot.At 1-1, the Rams aren't as desperate as the Bengals. TheScore isn't offering any Burrow specials at the moment because of his uncertain status, but if you want to back the Rams as an underdog, Los Angeles to win and Matt Stafford to throw over 1.5 passing touchdowns is +220.In the absence of Cooper Kupp, rookie receiver Puka Nacua has emerged with two monster 100-plus yard games to open the season. Entering Week 2, Nacua led the league in targets and receptions.A bet on Nacua and Bengals receiver Ja'Marr Chase to record over 99.5 receiving yards is +950. Chase has been limited to a total of 70 yards on the season. If it's Browning and not Burrow slinging it Monday night, receiving yards may even be harder for Chase to come by.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. Report: Chargers' Williams out for season with torn ACL
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams will miss the rest of the season after an MRI confirmed he tore his ACL, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Williams was carted to the locker room after being taken down awkwardly on a tackle in the third quarter of Sunday's 28-24 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. He was ruled out shortly after. The veteran wideout was off to the best start of his seven-year career. He averaged 83 yards and 6.3 receptions - both career highs. Williams also accumulated 19 catches for 249 yards and a touchdown.Los Angeles will now look to Joshua Palmer and first-round rookie Quentin Johnston to step up. Palmer has caught eight passes for 83 yards and a score, while Johnston has reeled in five balls for 26 yards in limited playing time. Palmer set career highs last year in receptions (72) and receiving yards (769).Keenan Allen, the Chargers' top wideout, has the most catches in the NFL this season (32) and leads the club in receiving yards (402).Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Adams frustrated by Raiders' SNF loss: 'I don't got time to wait around'
Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams is closer to the end of his NFL career than the beginning, and he isn't prepared to accept another lost season in Las Vegas."I don't act like it's all crazy - it's Week 3 - but I don't got time to wait around," Adams said following the Raiders' 23-18 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. "It's not a personal thing - I mean, it is a personal thing - but it ain't just about me."He added: "We're not doing things the right way to establish a winning culture early in the season."The Raiders fell to 1-2 after losing their home opener, which came a week after a 38-10 drubbing at the hands of the Buffalo Bills. While Las Vegas' offense failed to score more than 20 points for the third time in three weeks, the 30-year-old Adams continued to be one of the team's lone bright spots. He caught 13 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns against the Steelers.Adams starred in his first season with the Raiders in 2022, racking up 100 catches for 1,516 yards and an NFL-high 14 touchdowns. With close friend Derek Carr released in the offseason, there was speculation about Adams' future in Las Vegas. But Adams said in May that he was happy to be with the Raiders."I'm a Raider and I'm excited to be here," he said. "I love my head coach, and I love the general manager. ... I have no reason to lie. One thing I don't do is BS."The Raiders will go back on the road to face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. MNF best bets: Double the plays for another pair of prime-time games
Somehow, last week's best bets for Monday Night Football only went 2-1-1. The Saints allowed the Panthers to artfully perform a backdoor push on -3 despite Carolina never threatening to win the game. Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson somehow got over his passing yards total despite barely completing more than 50% of his passes and having a run game that averages over 6 yards per carry.Like it or not, the MNF doubleheader is back again this week with a pair of interesting matchups from a betting standpoint.Eagles @ Buccaneers (+5, 46.5)For the second straight week, the Eagles opened at around a touchdown, but their opponent has taken money, pulling the point spread down. That mattered on Thursday Night Football against the Vikings, but we're hoping it's moot this time around. The Buccaneers have been underrated since before the season, as evidenced by comfortable covers in both their games and a move from +800 to +450 to win the NFC South. More importantly, they match up well with what the Eagles want to do offensively. Unlike most of last season, the Bucs' veteran defense is still healthy. With Vita Vea clogging the middle, Tampa Bay should get back to its roots of stopping the run. The secondary can also defend the deep bombs Jalen Hurts seems most comfortable throwing.Baker Mayfield has been secure with the ball, and if Tampa Bay can avoid turnovers, it can do what Minnesota couldn't - pull off the prime-time upset of the defending NFC champions.Pick: Buccaneers (+5)Jalen Hurts: Under 45.5 rushing yardsVea's dominance in the middle gives Buccaneers linebackers Devin White and Lavonte David freedom to fill the gaps and contain the outside. They just held Justin Fields to 4 yards on three carries. Both of the Eagles' opponents this season appeared to have been ready for Hurts' keepers, as the Patriots and Vikings held him under 40 yards. I expect Tampa to do the same.Rams @ Bengals (-2, 43.5)The betting market has expected Joe Burrow to sit all week, and even Ja'Marr Chase thinks the quarterback shouldn't play. Maybe a hobbled Burrow would inspire the 0-2 Bengals' market rating to plummet, but I doubt it. This line dropping sharply from an open of -6.5 to under a field goal suggests that the Bengals are merely a league-average team without Burrow. So what if Jake Browning plays? Once the team confirms Burrow's absence, I'd expect the line and moneyline price to drop further. At that point, backing a desperate Bengals team is the value play. It's understandable if you're squeamish about that, but Cincinnati has a league-worst 3.8 yards per play. A further price drop indicates a dip in the Bengals' rating. However, the Rams have been rated below average since they were assigned a season win total of 6.5.The Bengals were considered a Super Bowl contender, and that can't be just on the back of Burrow. There should be enough left on the roster for Cincinnati to win a home game it badly needs to.Pick: Bengals moneyline (-130 or better)Matthew Stafford: Under 254.5 passing yardsBurrow's uncertainty has limited the options in the prop markets, as oddsmakers were unwilling to commit to various totals on Bengals players. We'll turn to the Rams for a player prop.Lou Anarumo is one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL, and the Rams can be very one-dimensional, relying on Matthew Stafford to throw. That might seem like a reason to play the over, but it allows the Bengals to employ a focused game plan to cut off what L.A. wants to do. Though Stafford's played well against familiar, in-division defenses, he won't know what Anarumo has planned - especially since the Bengals extensively prepared for Stafford before Super Bowl LVI.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Key takeaways and analysis from Week 3 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward. An all-time beatdown Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / Getty70 points. Seven zero. And it could've been more. The Dolphins humiliating the Broncos in historic fashion Sunday in Miami was the perfect encapsulation of two teams heading full steam toward polar opposite ends of the NFL hierarchy. On one side (the unbelievably good one), we have what may be an unstoppable offense. Doubters and noted haters of fun will say it's too early. But what else do you need to see from this juggernaut scoring attack?Mike McDaniel has taken his schematic genius to another level after a wildly impressive debut season as head coach. This offense has an answer for anything you could possibly want to throw at it; there's nothing like the way we've seen Miami manipulate coverage and get exactly what it wants out of nearly every rep in the passing game. It quite literally feels impossible to defend.Tua Tagovailoa has taken that schematic foundation to even greater heights by taking a major step forward in the early stages of his fourth season. The former Alabama star looks more confident than ever at the controls of this offense. He's getting the ball out incredibly quickly, with near-perfect decision-making, and sacrificing nothing in terms of downfield aggressiveness in the process. Tua entered this week already having tallied eight big-time throws, good for 10.4% of his passes after averaging just 4.3% the year prior, according to PFF.Those numbers should only continue to rise after another near-flawless performance in which he completed 23 of 26 passes for 309 yards, four touchdowns, no turnovers, and no sacks. And that's just the passing game. The running game, which has always been the bread and butter of offenses from the Shanahan tree, was somehow even more productive in Sunday's bloodbath. Breakout rookie De'Von Achane went off for 203 rushing yards and two scores on 11.3 yards per carry while also adding two touchdown catches. Raheem Mostert added 82 yards and three rushing touchdowns of his own, doing his part to help the Dolphins rack up 350 rushing yards on the day.The well-balanced massacre resulted in an NFL-record 726 yards of offense on the day. Miami was also in position to break the post-merger record for scoring with a late-game field goal, but McDaniel elected to settle for the 70-burger and give the Broncos a break. On the other end of the spectrum (the putrid one), we've got a Broncos team that somehow fooled people into thinking it could compete this season. Sunday's embarrassing effort drops Denver to 0-3 under Sean Payton and brings us back to a blockbuster offseason move that curiously drew no criticism whatsoever. You won't find anyone in this space arguing against Payton's capabilities as a coach, nor his borderline Hall of Fame resume. But trading first- and second-round picks for a soon-to-be 60-year-old head coach in hopes that he alone would elevate a bad roster was always severely misguided. Everything about this situation is a disaster.Stay tuned for Tuesday's edition of theScore's NFL Power Rankings, where we'll be debuting two very deserving teams at both No. 1 and No. 32.Jags hype stalling Julio Aguilar / Getty Images Sport / GettyWhat's going on in Jacksonville? The Jaguars entered this season as something of a consensus pick to win the AFC South, and deservedly so. Last year's playoff run was seemingly only the beginning for a young team with a franchise quarterback. Another year of development, along with some important additions to the roster, felt likely to push this team over the top. That may still happen in time, and perhaps even later this season, but there's at least some reason for concern. The 1-1 start was anything but spectacular, and a clear get-right spot at home against a beat-up Texans team produced a confounding 37-17 loss.As much as we all can, and likely should, default to believing in an offense led by Trevor Lawrence and Doug Pederson, the offensive line issues have the potential to hold this unit back. Protection was once again a major factor in Sunday's defeat, as Houston was constantly collapsing the pocket and disrupting the timing of the Jacksonville passing game. The Jaguars also have some major issues to address on the defensive front. A pass-rush group featuring a pair of first-round edge rushers (Travon Walker and Josh Allen), as well as some highly paid interior defenders, has to get some sort of pressure against a battered Texans offensive line that was without starting tackles Laremy Tunsil and Tytus Howard. That wasn't in the cards for the Jaguars' defense on this day, though, and Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud responded with the most impressive performance of his young career (more on him later).Jacksonville will hope that a two-week trip to London for a pair of games against the Falcons and Bills will help the team snap out of the early funk. But everything starts up front, and this team seems to be lacking in the trenches. Here we go again Kathryn Riley / Getty Images Sport / GettyGiving Zach Wilson a chance to step in for the injured Aaron Rodgers was always the right move, to be fair. There's a reason he was selected No. 2 overall just two years ago, and it was worth seeing whether the light bulb had come on, at least a little bit, after a summer of working alongside a Hall of Famer.Three games in, though, it's safe to conclude that no such thing has happened.Wilson once again held the Jets back in Sunday's loss to the Patriots, completing just 18 of 36 passes for 157 yards and no touchdowns while the offense managed a mere 10 points. New England completely bottled up the running game, limiting New York to 38 yards on 22 carries, and the passing game couldn't do a thing to pick up the slack. At this point, there's no reason to believe Wilson is magically going to become an accurate passer, a sound decision-maker, or even remotely composed under pressure. We've seen enough. Unfortunately for Jets fans, however, team officials seemingly can't wait to see more.Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported Sunday morning that the Jets have no plans to look outside the organization for an upgrade at quarterback despite receiving calls from free agents Matt Ryan and Carson Wentz with interest in joining the team. Head coach Robert Saleh continued to express confidence in Wilson after Sunday's loss, saying the former first-round pick "gives us the best chance to win," per SNY.Perhaps he's right. Wentz and Ryan wouldn't be the most spectacular additions to the quarterback room - especially when trying to pick up the offense midseason. But why not at least find out? This is a team that entered the year with Super Bowl aspirations. While any such goals were effectively ruled out when Rodgers went down four plays into the opener, the rest of this roster is in such a place that average quarterback play might be all the Jets need to sneak into the playoffs.Wilson isn't capable of providing that baseline stability right now. The Jets owe it to the rest of their team - and their fans - to see whether someone else out there can.Quick slantsCardinals feisty Michael Owens / Getty Images Sport / GettyIt's officially time to retire the "worst team in football" moniker for this year's Cardinals. It was a deserved title for as long as the preseason on-paper analysis could hold up, but that evidently didn't last. Arizona is proving to be a lot more pesky than any of us could've expected. A strong first half against the Giants last week was the first sign, and an upset win over the previously undefeated Cowboys effectively sealed it. The offense is doing a much better job of creating opportunities for its playmakers than Kliff Kingsbury ever did, and Jonathan Gannon's impact is already being felt on defense. So are the ColtsNobody had the Colts knocking off the Ravens - especially not with Gardner Minshew drawing in for an injured Anthony Richardson. The Indy offense was predictably bad with the veteran journeyman under center, but the defense forced some key turnovers and bothered Lamar Jackson just enough to hang around. This team is already night-and-day different from the circus we saw under Jeff Saturday last season. Give this staff an offseason or two to build out the roster, and we could have something special. In the meantime, the Colts are going to remain a sneaky tough matchup week in and week out.Stroud has arrivedStroud was quietly impressive in his first two starts, battling through some protection issues to keep the offense moving. He finally got some more help in Sunday's win over the Jaguars, and the results couldn't have been much better. Stroud completed 20 of 30 passes for 280 yards, two touchdowns, and, for the third consecutive game, no interceptions. The No. 2 overall pick has easily been the best rookie passer through three games.Achane, tooWe touched on Achane's breakout performance, but it's worth specifically highlighting his ceiling in this offense (there isn't one). The third-round rookie, who ran a 4.32 in the 40-yard dash, is both a home-run hitter and a creative runner in short spaces. A lack of size was likely the main factor in his draft-day slide, but the Dolphins are never going to ask him to be a between-the-tackles runner in condensed formations. Good luck defending this offense with another high-speed playmaker schemed up in space as a complement to Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.Regression is roughThe Vikings somehow coming away with 13 wins despite a minus-3 point differential last season will forever stand as one of the wildest examples of a team outperforming its talent level. Other teams with 12-plus wins, for reference, had a point differential of no less than plus-96. It was only natural that the Vikings wouldn't be so fortunate in close games this year, and the inevitable regression has hit them in the worst way early. Bouncing back from an 0-3 start won't be so easy with matchups against the Chiefs and 49ers on the schedule over the next month.Josh McDaniels, WYD? Ethan Miller / Getty Images Sport / GettyAs far as bizarre coaching decisions go, it's going to be tough to top the move McDaniels made Sunday night against the Steelers. Trailing by eight points with 2:22 to play, the Raiders elected to kick a field goal on fourth-and-4 from the 8-yard line. Cutting the lead to five was a bet that Las Vegas would be able to get the ball back and win it with a touchdown drive. Two problems here: You're actively choosing to give the ball to the other team in a one-score game, and you're betting on one of the worst defenses in football to get it back for you. To the surprise of no one, the Steelers simply got the one first down they needed and ran out the majority of the clock to secure the win. This regime should already be facing major questions about its inability to build a competitive roster. If McDaniels is going to add bizarre in-game decisions to the mix, the question becomes what exactly it is we're doing here.Falcons have a QB problemWe all know how good the Falcons' run game can be - Bijan Robinson is already one of the best runners in football, Tyler Allgeier is a heck of a complement, and Arthur Smith schemes up the run game with the best of them. But teams are going to stack the box and sell out to stop the run if they aren't the least bit threatened by your pass game. That's exactly what the Lions did to the Falcons on Sunday, and Desmond Ridder couldn't do a thing to get them out of it. A six-point output against these types of looks, throwing for 201 yards on 38 pass attempts while taking seven sacks, gives the rest of the NFL a clear blueprint for how to defend this team.Keenan Allen: Not washedRoute-runners sure do age gracefully. The Chargers drafting Quentin Johnston in the first round may have given the impression that the 31-year-old Allen was nearing the end in L.A., but that's not quite how it's playing out. Sunday's 18-catch, 215-yard effort (both career highs) was a reminder that Allen is still one of the league's most difficult receivers to cover one-on-one. The new-look Chargers' passing game is going to be feeding him targets if Mike Williams misses extended time with his knee injury.Garrett going offMyles Garrett in a Jim Schwartz defense just isn't fair. The Browns' All-Pro defensive end has been unstoppable as part of this new-look pass rush, and it finally led to some major sack production in Sunday's win over the Titans. Garrett got Andre Dillard for 3.5 sacks and finished the day with five quarterback hits. He's the early front-runner for Defensive Player of the Year, and the sack numbers could come in bunches with the Browns finally having leads to defend.J.C. Jackson mistakeIt's easy to get caught up in the excitement of player movement in free agency; we all do it. As the old adage goes, though, there's often a reason a player's former team wasn't willing to meet his price tag. The Chargers holding J.C. Jackson out as a healthy scratch this week officially makes his signing the latest in a long line of free-agency disasters. Jackson was supposed to help put the L.A. defense over the top after signing a five-year, $82.5-million deal in 2022. The Chargers would take on a $15-million dead-money hit to move on from the high-priced corner next offseason.Stat of the week
Mahomes felt 'pressure' to get Kelce a TD with Taylor Swift in attendance
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes knew he needed to get Travis Kelce a touchdown with Taylor Swift watching from Kelce's suite at Arrowhead Stadium."Yeah, I heard she was in the house," Mahomes said postgame, per The Comeback. "I felt a little bit of pressure. So I knew I had to get it to Trav."Mahomes added, "I think he wanted to get in the end zone just as much as all the Swifties wanted him to."With just over seven minutes left in the game, Mahomes connected with Kelce for a 3-yard touchdown to extend their lead to 41-0 over the Chicago Bears.
Missing out on No. 1 pick, landing Stroud 'best thing' to happen to Texans
The Houston Texans seem confident that C.J. Stroud is the right guy at quarterback."The best thing that happened to the Houston Texans franchise was us beating the Indianapolis Colts last game, last year," tight end Brevin Jordan said Sunday, according to ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime. "We drafted the right guy. Man, he's a leader. He's a phenomenal player and a phenomenal guy with God-given talent. Dude, he's unbelievable."That 32-31 victory over the Colts moved the Texans from the No. 1 pick to the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and gave the Chicago Bears the top selection. The Carolina Panthers traded for the first pick and selected quarterback Bryce Young, leaving Stroud on the board for the Texans at second overall. The early returns on Stroud have been promising; the rookie became the first passer in NFL history to have at least 900 yards passing, four passing touchdowns, and no interceptions through three starts after Houston upset the Jacksonville Jaguars 37-17 on Sunday.Stroud (906) also joined Cam Newton (1,012) and Justin Herbert (931) as the only signal-callers in NFL history to throw for at least 906 yards through three starts.DeMeco Ryans, who was hired by the team this offseason and earned his first NFL victory as a head coach Sunday, praised Stroud praise as well."Sky is the limit for C.J.," Ryans said. "He just keeps his head down and keeps working. C.J. is a very humble young man. Everything starts with the quarterback, and we have a good one who's doing really good things. ... He's been a leader for us as an offensive unit, and it's impressive to see a young man continue to get better each week and lead that group."Stroud has 906 yards and four touchdowns on 78-of-121 (64.5%) passing this season. He also has 10 carries for 35 yards.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
