Report: Bills change course, won't bring in Fournette on free-agent visit
The Buffalo Bills won't bring in free-agent running back Leonard Fournette for a visit on Tuesday despite the team's initial interest, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.Fournette told NFL insider Jordan Schultz on Monday that he had a visit scheduled with Buffalo. However, the Bills scratched it since they don't expect to lose running back Ty Johnson from their practice squad anymore, reports Schultz.Other teams have also shown interest in Fournette, notes Pelissero. The veteran back spent the last three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was an important contributor to the Bucs' Super Bowl run during the 2020 season. Fournette put up 812 yards on the ground over 14 appearances and 13 starts in 2021. His efficiency cratered to 3.5 yards per carry last season. The Bills face the Bucs in Week 8.Buffalo's rushing attack ranks 13th in the NFL this season. Second-year rusher James Cook leads the backfield with 363 yards on 4.8 yards per attempt. The team's running back depth chart also features Latavius Murray and Damien Harris, who was briefly hospitalized after suffering a sprained neck in Sunday night's win over the New York Giants. Harris is in the concussion protocol.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Power Rankings - Week 7: Each team's biggest disappointment
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors. This week, we highlight each team's biggest disappointment so far.1. Miami Dolphins (5-1) Adam Glanzman / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 2Vic Fangio has become synonymous with top-10 defenses throughout his career, but Miami has yet to click defensively under its new coordinator. The Dolphins - owners of the league's best offense - rank in the bottom half of the NFL in points, yards, and EPA/play allowed.2. San Francisco 49ers (5-1)Previous rank: 1The 49ers used a top-100 draft pick on kicker Jake Moody in April, but they still have question marks at the position. The Michigan product, who struggled in the preseason, missed two field-goal attempts in Week 6, including a 41-yarder in the dying seconds to win the game. He's PFF's 25th-ranked kicker.3. Kansas City Chiefs (5-1)Previous rank: 4Kansas City expected Jawaan Taylor to be a reliable tackle after signing him to a four-year, $80-million deal in March. However, the 25-year-old has struggled, allowing 15 pressures and committing 11 penalties in six games.4. Philadelphia Eagles (5-1)Previous rank: 3The Eagles promoted Brian Johnson to replace Shane Steichen as offensive coordinator, but Philly's offense has lacked consistency. Johnson's play-calling has been questionable (to put it nicely), and Philadelphia has one of football's least productive offensive units in the fourth quarter.5. Detroit Lions (5-1) David Eulitt / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 6Rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs has flashed his potential, but the Lions will have expected a bigger impact after using the No. 12 pick on the Alabama product. He had 249 scrimmage yards and no touchdowns on 53 touches in the first four games before missing two weeks due to injury.6. Buffalo Bills (4-2)Previous rank: 5Josh Allen and Co. could definitely use some help from the Bills' tight end room as the season progresses. Buffalo's top two tight ends - Dawson Knox and first-round rookie Dalton Kincaid - have caught only 31 passes for 210 yards and one touchdown combined.7. Baltimore Ravens (4-2)Previous rank: 7Baltimore needs more from its wide receiver corps if it wants to have any chance of making a deep run in the AFC. While first-round rookie Zay Flowers has stood out, the likes of Rashod Bateman and Odell Beckham Jr. have yet to record 40-plus receiving yards in a game.8. Dallas Cowboys (4-2)Previous rank: 9The Cowboys' offense under Mike McCarthy is still a work in progress. Since the head coach took over play-calling duties to replace Kellen Moore, Dallas has had a hard time moving the ball consistently and scoring points. The NFC East club is also one of the league's worst in red-zone situations.9. Cleveland Browns (3-2)Previous rank: 12Deshaun Watson missed Cleveland's last two games with an injury, but the quarterback was far from great in his three starts, which is a major disappointment for a Browns team boasting a historically good defense. Watson posted an 87.8 passer rating and ranked 19th in EPA/play between Weeks 1-3.10. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-2) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious rank: 10Jacksonville drafted Anton Harrison in the first round this year, but the right tackle has lacked consistency in Year 1. The Oklahoma product, who's allowed nine pressures and four sacks, ranks 55th among 74 qualified offensive tackles, according to PFF.11. Cincinnati Bengals (3-3)Previous rank: 13Joe Burrow's calf injury really dragged down his and the Bengals' performances through the first quarter of the season. That's hopefully a thing of the past since Burrow's improved in the last two games.12. Seattle Seahawks (3-2)Previous rank: 8Jaxon Smith-Njigba is buried behind DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett on the depth chart, but no one could've predicted this kind of production: 110 receiving yards on the season and less than 15 yards in three of his five games.13. Los Angeles Chargers (2-3)Previous rank: 11The loss of Mike Williams was supposed to create a huge opportunity for Quentin Johnston. That hasn't happened. Instead, the rookie has been nearly invisible, catching just one pass for 18 yards over his last two games.14. Houston Texans (3-3)Previous rank: 17Dameon Pierce is going through a major sophomore slump. After a brilliant rookie campaign, Pierce is averaging just 2.9 yards per carry, prompting a larger workload for Devin Singletary behind him.15. Los Angeles Rams (3-3) Ronald Martinez / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 16The Rams don't have a single disappointment. What was supposed to be a lost season has turned into a pleasant surprise. We just have to tip our cap to Sean McVay.16. New York Jets (3-3)Previous rank: 20The Jets signed Dalvin Cook to be a solid No. 2 option behind the recovering Breece Hall. So far, he hasn't even been that. The former Pro Bowler has rushed for a measly 2.8 yards per carry.17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2)Previous rank: 15The Bucs expected a lot from Cody Mauch after using a second-round pick on him and naming him a Week 1 starter. However, it's been a bigger learning curve than expected for the North Dakota State product.18. Pittsburgh Steelers (3-2)Previous rank: 18Where to even start? The offense is averaging one touchdown per game. Kenny Pickett's pocket awareness hasn't improved. Matt Canada's seat is getting hotter with each passing week.19. Atlanta Falcons (3-3)Previous rank: 14Desmond Ridder had a phenomenal game in Week 5. His list of good showings begins and ends there, though, as the Falcons still struggle to extract consistency from their young quarterback.20. Minnesota Vikings (2-4) Mitchell Leff / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 23The transition from Dalvin Cook to Alexander Mattison hasn't gone exactly to plan. Mattison has endured ball-security issues while also averaging under 4 yards per carry.21. New Orleans Saints (3-3)Previous rank: 21Signing Derek Carr was supposed to change everything for the Saints, but this offense is still endlessly frustrating. The veteran quarterback needs to be better.22. Washington Commanders (3-3)Previous rank: 27Be careful not to blame the Commanders' offensive line for the 34 sacks allowed this far. Sam Howell's pocket presence is washing out some of the impressive things the young quarterback is doing elsewhere.23. Indianapolis Colts (3-3)Previous rank: 19Had Alec Pierce emerged as a strong No. 2, that would've eased some concerns about the Colts' receiving corps. The former second-round pick has recorded just 11 catches and 149 yards in six games.24. Las Vegas Raiders (3-3)Previous rank: 24Josh McDaniels was making a risky bet when he dumped the Raiders' long-term starter for Jimmy Garoppolo. Not only has that looked like a mistake, but the head coach is also making a fair share of bizarre in-game decisions.25. Green Bay Packers (2-3) Bryan M. Bennett / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 25Does anyone get on Packers fans' nerves more than defensive coordinator Joe Barry? The defense looks like the strength of the team on paper, but Green Bay ranks just 25th in defensive success rate.26. Tennessee Titans (2-4)Previous rank: 22Ryan Tannehill has always been an underappreciated quarterback, but two touchdowns in six games isn't going to get it done. It might be time for a change under center.27. New York Giants (1-5)Previous rank: 28What a letdown for the Giants' entire offense. The Daniel Jones contract looks like a mistake, the offensive line is a mess, the new-look receiver room has been disappointing, and Brian Daboll isn't doing much to elevate the unit.28. Chicago Bears (1-5)Previous rank: 26This was supposed to be Justin Fields' year. We've seen some flashes, but his continued struggles as a passer make it impossible to have any sort of confidence in him as the Bears' long-term quarterback.29. Arizona Cardinals (1-5)Previous rank: 29Arizona's new coaching staff is doing a much better job getting creative with Rondale Moore, but the production still isn't at the level it needs to be. The Cardinals need more from their former second-round pick.30. Denver Broncos (1-5) Justin Edmonds / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 32The Broncos are no better under Sean Payton than they were under Nathaniel Hackett. Go figure. The move to give up premium picks for a head coach is starting to look like a big mistake.31. New England Patriots (1-5)Previous rank: 30What isn't disappointing about the Patriots right now? Mac Jones has been brutal, the receiving corps lacks playmakers, the new offensive system is somehow no better than the last, and Bill Belichick bears responsibility for it all. Everything is bad in New England.32. Carolina Panthers (0-6)Previous rank: 31The slow start isn't exactly on Bryce Young. Carolina could've done more to improve his supporting cast, and the current offensive system isn't the best fit. But the early returns on the No. 1 pick are concerning nonetheless.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Prescott throws 1 TD, runs for another as Cowboys beat Chargers on MNF
Dak Prescott pitched in two touchdowns on Monday night as the Dallas Cowboys escaped Los Angeles with a 20-17 victory against the Chargers.Prescott, who scored one touchdown with his arm and another with his legs, put together a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter that culminated in a decisive Brandon Aubrey field goal. The Cowboys picked off Justin Herbert on the following drive to seal the win.More to come.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Bengals OC calls struggles unacceptable: Cincy has 'too many good players'
The Cincinnati Bengals claimed their second straight victory in Week 6, but that seemingly isn't enough for offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, who criticized the team Monday."Just fuming. We have too many good coaches, too many good players to not play to our standard that we have set for ourselves," Callahan said after Sunday's 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks, according to Jay Morrison of Pro Football Network. "That was addressed. Everybody had their moment in the barrel today."The Bengals had a solid start against the Seahawks and scored 14 points in the first two quarters. However, Cincinnati slowed down in the second half and struggled to move the ball. Its defense ultimately came up clutch in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
Colts' Richardson unlikely to return this season
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season, team owner Jim Irsay told ESPN's Stephen Holder on Monday."It's not definite, but (he) probably misses this year, and we're going to have to contend with that," Irsay said.Richardson - this year's fourth overall pick - sustained an AC joint injury in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. He was originally expected to miss four-to-eight weeks but reportedly started considering season-ending surgery recently."There's debate going, but it's probably going to lead toward surgery in the next week or so," Irsay added. "We're just trying to figure out exactly how and when and what we want to do and what Anthony wants to do."Richardson's absence is a big blow to a Colts team that's struggled to find consistency at quarterback in recent years. Indy hasn't won a playoff game since the 2018 season. The Florida product has already missed two games this year. He was sidelined in Week 3 due to a concussion and didn't play Week 6 because of his shoulder ailment. In four starts, Richardson completed 59.5% of his passes for 577 yards and three touchdowns against one interception. The 21-year-old also scored four TDs on the ground.Gardner Minshew, who's made two starts while replacing Richardson, will presumably remain the Colts' QB1. Minshew threw for 300 yards and one touchdown but was intercepted three times during Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Indianapolis is 3-3 this season.Indy's quarterback depth chart also features Sam Ehlinger and Kellen Mond, who's on the practice squad.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rams' Kendrick arrested on concealed weapon charge
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Rams starting cornerback Derion Kendrick was arrested early Monday morning on a felony charge of carrying a concealed weapon.Los Angeles County jail inmate records indicate Kendrick was arrested after a traffic stop in Hollywood, several hours after the Rams' 26-9 victory over Arizona at SoFi Stadium. The second-year pro from Georgia played 68 snaps against the Cardinals and had two tackles.TMZ reported that officers found a gun and marijuana in Kendrick's car. Rams coach Sean McVay said Monday afternoon that the team and the NFL were aware of Kendrick's arrest.Kendrick was booked at 2:14 a.m., and there was no record of his release by mid-afternoon. McVay declined to say whether Kendrick was still in jail. It's all about gathering more information," McVay said. Until I have all of the information, it's hard for me to answer anything further with regards to his status, any of those types of things."Kendrick has started every game for Los Angeles this season, taking over a prominent role on defense after the Rams parted ways with Jalen Ramsey and most of their starting secondary during the offseason. The 23-year-old Kendrick, a sixth-round pick in 2022, started his college career at Clemson. He won national championships with both the Tigers and the Bulldogs. If Kendrick is absent from the Rams for a significant amount of time, his starting job is likely to be taken by rookie Tre Tomlinson or veteran Duke Shelley, McVay indicated.___AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFLCopyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jets' Saleh: Rodgers' presence is his 'superpower'
Aaron Rodgers' presence around the New York Jets has led to positive - some may even say supernatural - results."His superpower is his presence," head coach Robert Saleh said Monday, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "Him being in this building, being around his teammates, being in the locker room, his positive attitude, his thoughts of manifestation and all that stuff, I think it's powerful."Rodgers' appearance Sunday was a major talking point after the Jets stunned the Philadelphia Eagles at home. Not only did the former MVP wear a headset and offer in-game suggestions on offense, but he also threw the football around pregame - the first time he's been seen throwing since tearing his Achilles in September. The 39-year-old, who is attempting to aggressively rehab his Achilles tear in the hope of a return late this season, completed the tosses without crutches or a walking boot.Rodgers has twice appeared around his team since his injury. He watched a Week 4 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs from a press box. That contest also went down to the wire as New York put up a strong effort against the reigning Super Bowl champions before falling 23-20. The veteran spoke with his team pregame, which teammate Allen Lazard described as coming "into the team room like Batman.""As a coach, of course, selfishly, I want him here every single day," Saleh added Monday. "I want him in every meeting. I want him on the practice field. I want him on the sideline. I want him in the locker room because he's an unbelievable human. Outside of scheme and playing ability, the intangibles that he brings to his teammates, and the fuel I think his teammates will give to him, is priceless. You just can't quantify it. You can't put a price on it."The Jets head into their Week 7 bye week with a 3-3 mark after winning two straight.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Rams' Williams likely out vs. Steelers, but ankle injury not serious
Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams is dealing with an ankle sprain that's expected to sideline him from the Week 7 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. However, an MRI revealed the injury isn't a long-term issue, Schefter adds. The Rams' running back group will still take a significant hit, though. Backup Ronnie Rivers is expected to miss four-to-five weeks with a Grade 3 PCL sprain and is likely headed for injured reserve, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Williams leads the Rams with 456 yards rushing and six touchdowns. The 2022 fifth-round pick was injured late in Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals after producing a career-high 156 yards on the ground.Meanwhile, Rivers has been used sparingly by L.A., earning 57 yards on 13 carries this season.Zach Evans is the other running back on the Rams' active roster, while Royce Freeman is on the practice squad.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bears' Fields doubtful vs. Raiders due to dislocated thumb
Quarterback Justin Fields is doubtful for the Chicago Bears' matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders after suffering a dislocated right thumb, head coach Matt Eberflus said Monday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. No surgery is imminent for the Bears' signal-caller, a source told Rapoport. The team is optimistic that rehab will improve his grip strength and get him back on the field when possible.Eberflus said that the team will have a better idea of Fields' availability later on in the week along with a timetable for his return.Fields exited Sunday's game after being sacked by Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter in the third quarter. He did not return for the remainder of the contest.Fields completed six of 10 passes for 58 yards and one interception prior to leaving the game. Tyson Bagent passed for 83 yards, one interception, and rushed for one touchdown after replacing him.Bagent joined Chicago as an undrafted free agent this past spring. He secured the backup job after leaping over Nathan Peterman on the depth chart. It's unclear who the Bears will opt to line up under center for their matchup against the Raiders. The 24-year-old Fields has led the Bears to a 1-5 record in his third campaign. He has thrown for 1,201 yards, 11 touchdowns, and six interceptions with a 61.7% completion rate. The Ohio State product has also rushed for 237 yards and a score.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Panthers' Reich handing play-calling duties to OC Brown
Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich is handing play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, the head coach said Monday."It's always been part of the plan," Reich said, per ESPN's David Newton. "Something Thomas and I had discussed at the time that he was hired. I'm excited for this for Thomas, I'm excited for our team and our offense. ... We all have a lot of confidence in him."The Panthers' offense has struggled through an 0-6 start, ranking 23rd in both yards (294.7) and points per game (18.7).Brown and the team have a Week 7 bye to prepare and transition responsibilities before taking on the Houston Texans in Week 8.The 37-year-old offensive coordinator spent 2011-19 coaching with various NCAA programs. Brown began his NFL coaching career as the Los Angeles Rams' running backs coach in 2020. He was promoted to assistant head coach for the 2021 and 2022 campaigns and joined the Panthers as their offensive coordinator ahead of this season.No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young showed brief flashes under Reich's play-calling, but he's recorded a 63.2% completion rate while throwing for 967 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions. Young missed the Panthers' Week 3 contest with an ankle injury.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Chargers' Bosa, James set to return for MNF vs. Cowboys
Los Angeles Chargers pass-rusher Joey Bosa and safety Derwin James are expected to return for Monday's matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, sources told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.Bosa and James missed Week 4 with toe and hamstring injuries, respectively. The Chargers were on their bye in Week 5, giving their star defenders time to get healthy.Los Angeles is entering the prime-time matchup with few health concerns after an injury-ravaged start to the season.Running back Austin Ekeler is set to return against Dallas following a three-game absence with an ankle injury. Wide receiver Joshua Palmer is also expected to suit up despite a groin injury, adds Pelissero.Bosa, a four-time Pro Bowler, has three sacks and four tackles for loss in three appearances this season. Mayfield laments Bucs' offensive struggles in loss to Lions: 'I sucked'
Quarterback Baker Mayfield took the brunt of the blame following the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 20-6 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday."We sucked today," Mayfield said, according to team reporter Scott Smith. "I sucked today, we sucked today, it was awful from the get-go. We can't play like that. We didn't start fast, we didn't pick it up in the middle and we didn't finish strong. Plain and simple, we have to be better."Mayfield finished Sunday's contest completing 19 of 37 passes for 206 yards and one interception with a 56.8 passer rating. The defeat to the Lions marked the first time this season that the Buccaneers were unable to score a touchdown in a game, as all their points came on a pair of Chase McLaughlin field goals."We need to pick our shit up," Mayfield added, per ESPN's Jenna Laine.Head coach Todd Bowles believes that his team didn't handle the first game following a bye in Week 5 very well."I think it felt like we came off a bye week and we looked sluggish and we played like that," Bowles said, per Smith.Tampa Bay remains atop the NFC South standings despite picking up its second loss of the season. While Mayfield was able to connect with Chris Godwin on six of his passes for 77 yards, he struggled to get Mike Evans and Trey Palmer involved as the pair combined for six receptions. The Bucs also struggled to maintain drives throughout Sunday's matchup and converted just two of 12 third-down attempts. Tampa Bay exits Week 6 averaging 18 points per game and 291.4 total yards per contest through five games. Mayfield has much higher expectations for the offense than what the team has displayed to date."We should be putting up a lot more points than we have been. And so we need to be accountable with that, and it starts with me, and we'll get that going," Mayfield said, per Laine.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. 2028 Olympics to feature baseball, cricket, debut of flag football
The 2028 Olympics and Paralympics will feature a mix of old and new sports.Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), and lacrosse (sixes) return to the program, while flag football and squash will make their debut in Los Angeles following a ratified vote of the proposed sports by the International Olympic Committee.A decision on boxing's inclusion at the 2028 Games has been put on hold as the sport is currently without a governing body recognized by the IOC."The hope of an Olympic dream just became an active pursuit for countless athletes around the world," said LA28 chief athlete officer Janet Evans in a statement. "This remarkable journey over the next five years will undoubtedly change lives, inspiring athletes with the opportunity to represent their sport and country on the world's biggest stage."Participating in the Games is an experience unlike any other, and any athlete who pursues it will become an invaluable thread within the shared story of the LA28 Games."Baseball was dropped from the Olympic program following the 2008 Games before returning for Tokyo 2020. MNF best bets: Cowboys-Chargers sure to be wild, start-to-finish sweat
In a famous "Seinfeld" episode, Kramer enters Jerry's apartment and exclaims, "Who wants to have some fun!?" He might as well have been talking about this game instead of merely hitting golf balls into the ocean. The Cowboys and Chargers are built for a wild time - the type of twist-and-turn adventure Jerry, George, and Elaine would find themselves in if they signed up for whatever Kramer was up to.Cowboys @ Chargers (+1.5, 50.5)The point spread crept up early in the week but never touched +3. It's come down from +2.5, possibly on the news of Austin Ekeler's return for the Chargers. Los Angeles gets a boost in the run game, easier throws for potentially big gains when Justin Herbert's under pressure, and should be more efficient in converting red-zone trips into touchdowns. In his only game this season, Ekeler had the ball in his hands 20 times for better than eight yards per touch. L.A. went score for score with Miami before we knew what an impressive feat that was. Already without Trevon Diggs, Dallas won't have Leighton Vander Esch's run support at middle linebacker. The Dallas offense hopes to bounce back after being wholly ineffective in San Francisco. For the season, though, the Cowboys have run for fewer yards per carry than the Chargers without Ekeler. Dak Prescott fell back into his old interception-throwing habit last week, while Herbert has just one turnover this season.Perhaps most important is the familiarity between coaching staffs - particularly L.A. offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. During his stint in the same role with Dallas, he would've practiced against Dan Quinn and should know how to beat the Cowboys' scheme. While they should know what Moore likes to run, having different personnel with the Chargers and the fact that offense dictates the play while defense reacts means the Bolts should have used their bye week wisely to prepare for this one.I'd love to forego the Chargers' spread and take the moneyline, but with the Bolts, they have a higher probability than most teams to do everything necessary to win but somehow lose by a point.Pick: Chargers (+1.5)Tony Pollard: Under 16.5 rushing attempts (-125)
Josh Allen gets throwing shoulder checked after SNF win vs. Giants
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen sustained an injury to his throwing shoulder during Sunday night's 14-9 win over the New York Giants.Allen said postgame that X-rays didn't show anything on his shoulder, according to Alex Brasky of the Daily News."We'll be alright," Allen said, per Matthew Bove of 7 News WKBW.The 27-year-old added that he suffered the injury in the second quarter, saying it happened one play before he took a big hit that required him to go into the medical tent to be checked for a head injury. Allen was cleared to return after missing two snaps.
Garoppolo injures back in win over Patriots, leaves stadium in ambulance
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a back injury during Sunday's 21-17 win over the New England Patriots.Garoppolo sustained the ailment in the second quarter and was replaced by Brian Hoyer after halftime. Garoppolo left the stadium in an ambulance, according to Heidi Fang of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.The 31-year-old was taken to hospital for precautionary tests, as the team wanted to "err on the side of caution," a source to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Key takeaways and analysis from Week 6 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward.J-E-T-S Kathryn Riley / Getty Images Sport / GettyHow's that for an upset? The Jets knocking off the undefeated Eagles may well go down as the most surprising result of the entire season. Not only was New York counting on Zach Wilson to keep pace with Jalen Hurts, but the absence of top corners Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed figured to present some equally problematic mismatches on defense. As it turns out, any such concerns underestimated how much the Jets' defensive front could pick up the slack.New York managed to force Philly away from the run game like so few defenses can, holding the Eagles to a season-low 3.6 yards per carry and getting a big D'Andre Swift fumble late in the first half.Putting the game almost entirely in Hurts' hands - his 45 pass attempts are his most since October 2021 - didn't work out so well for Philadelphia, either. The Jets' supremely talented pass-rush rotation got home consistently, notching 10 quarterback hits and having a key role in New York's three interceptions. You certainly weren't alone if you wrote off the Jets on account of Aaron Rodgers' injury. And you won't be alone if you're hesitant to buy back in at this still-early stage. But credit where it's due.Wilson has quietly been minimizing the backbreaking mistakes, doing his part not to lose games for New York. And with a defense like this, that can be all you need to win more often than not.Might the Jets have enough to create chaos in the AFC playoff race?Browns stun 49ers Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyIf you, like me, have been resisting the urge to jump on the Brock Purdy bandwagon, you might be inclined to make this result about the 49ers disappointing. However, you might want to resist that urge. While we could raise several concerns about what we saw from Purdy and the 49ers Sunday, the Browns defense was the real story in this one. More specifically, this game was a showcase for the best assistant coaching hire of the year.Jim Schwartz's defense didn't just give San Francisco some trouble during an off day for the squad. Cleveland terrorized Kyle Shanahan in a way we haven't seen over his seven-year run with the 49ers.
Saleh proud of Jets for stifling Hurts: 'We've embarrassed' elite QBs
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh loves what his team has accomplished so far this season despite facing some of the NFL's premier quarterbacks."Through these first six weeks, we've played a gauntlet of quarterbacks. I know we haven't gotten all wins, but we've embarrassed all of them," Saleh said Sunday after New York's 20-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, per SNY. "Just really, really proud of the defense."Despite playing without their top two cornerbacks in Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, the Jets forced Jalen Hurts into three interceptions in Week 6 and sacked the Eagles star twice. It was Hurts' first three-INT performance since 2021. Geno Smith takes blame for loss vs. Bengals: 'The guys deserved to win'
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith took responsibility for the team's 17-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday."I felt like the guys deserved to win today," Smith said, according to Brady Henderson of ESPN. "Obviously, I didn't do my best job today to get that done. So those are things that I put on myself. I lay it right at my feet, right on my shoulders, and I look forward to the next opportunity."Smith threw for 323 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. The Seahawks out-gained the Bengals on offense by 167 yards in the loss.Smith's first interception came in the red zone, his first in that area of the field since becoming the Seahawks starting quarterback at the beginning of last season. The 33-year-old underthrew wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba near the goal line, causing the turnover."I just need to be better," Smith said. "Can't do that, especially in the red zone. Can't put the ball in harm's way. Like I said, the defense is playing a tremendous game. We got points right there. I've got to protect the ball. So I've got to be better."Smith added: "You play long enough in this game, it'll happen. But you've got to flush it. You've got to move on to the next one. We've got a lot of football left to play. I believe in the type of player that I am. I know today isn't indicative of who I am as a player."Sunday was the first time this season that Smith turned the ball over twice in a game. He entered Week 6 with just one interception in four contests. The loss drops the Seahawks to 3-2. He'll undergo an MRI on Monday to determine potential additional damage.Fields appeared to sustain the injury while being sacked by Vikings pass-rusher Danielle Hunter in the third quarter. He went to the locker room and did not return to the game.

It's a little bruised," Lawrence said postgame, according to Stuart Webber of ActionNewsJax.The star passer added that he felt a "discomfort" when he was taken down while being sacked in the final minutes of the game, per ESPN's Michael DiRocco. 49ers' McCaffrey, Samuel sustain oblique, shoulder injuries
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel sustained oblique and shoulder injuries, respectively, in the team's 19-17 loss against the Cleveland Browns. Both stars were ruled out of the game with their ailments.McCaffrey had 11 carries for 43 yards and three receptions for nine yards and a touchdown before being forced out.The playmaker was listed as questionable to return, came back briefly, and then jogged to the locker room.McCaffrey, 27, led the NFL in rushing with 510 yards and seven touchdowns entering Week 6. He also had 168 receiving yards and a touchdown on 20 receptions.Samuel had two carries for 11 yards and failed to haul in his lone target before his exit. The wideout's X-rays were negative, a source told Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. He'll reportedly undergo an MRI as well.Samuel has 302 receiving yards, 84 rushing yards, and one touchdown each through the air and on the ground this season. The 27-year-old Samuel has never played a full season entering this campaign. Report: Dolphins' Ramsey ahead of schedule, could practice this week
Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey could be back a lot sooner than expected.Ramsey is far ahead of schedule in his recovery from knee surgery and could return to practice as early as this week, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The veteran cornerback underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee in July. He was reportedly expected to be sidelined until December. However, he is pushing to play in November, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Ramsey previously promised that he would beat his injury timeline by a month.Miami acquired the six-time Pro Bowl cornerback in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams during the offseason.Ramsey's return would aid a Dolphins defense that ranks 26th in points allowed and 23rd in yardage allowed. Report: Patriots' Jones to be on short leash vs. Raiders
New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is on a short leash for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Jones reportedly could be pulled if the Patriots struggle during the opening few series of the Week 6 matchup. The 25-year-old was benched late in New England's last two games, but both were blowout losses. The Patriots were outscored a combined 72-3 by the New Orleans Saints and Dallas Cowboys. It's unclear if Bailey Zappe or Will Grier would take over for Jones. Zappe came in against the Saints and Cowboys, but Grier - who was claimed from the Cincinnati Bengals following a strong preseason performance - could have a shot at playing, adds Rapoport.New England might also expand Malik Cunningham's role. The quarterback/receiver was moved off the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, and the Patriots reportedly have developed a package of plays for him.Jones' poor play from 2022 has continued into the start of this campaign. The quarterback has completed 62.5% of his passes for 1,008 yards and five touchdowns against six interceptions.Jones also had three of his turnovers returned for defensive scores and has failed to throw a touchdown pass in the last two weeks.Despite the quarterback's struggles, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has continued to insist Jones is the team's starter and suggested Jones was pulled from the blowout defeats to protect him from injury.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Richardson mulling season-ending shoulder surgery
Indianapolis Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson is "strongly considering" season-ending shoulder surgery on his injured AC joint, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Colts and Richardson received a handful of opinions, with some determining that surgery is the best way to heal his shoulder injury, Rapoport adds.Richardson suffered the injury while being tackled on a designed quarterback run in the second quarter of last Sunday's win over the Tennessee Titans. The 21-year-old was diagnosed with a Grade 3 AC joint sprain, though an MRI did not reveal a torn labrum, Rapoport reports.Indianapolis put Richardson on injured reserve earlier this week, knocking him out for a minimum of four games. Earlier reports stated that the 2023 No. 4 overall pick could be sidelined anywhere from four-to-eight weeks if he didn't require surgery.Richardson was off to a hot start as a dual-threat option, throwing three touchdowns through the air and scoring four more on the ground. He was also 2-2 as a starter for a Colts club that is currently 3-2 on the season.Gardner Minshew is set to start under center with Richardson out. 5 realistic blockbuster trades we want to see before the NFL deadline
The NFL trade deadline is mere weeks away on Oct. 31, and the rumor mill is heating up. Let's cook up some blockbuster deals that could actually happen.Saquon Barkley RamsRams receiveGiants receiveRB Saquon Barkley4th-round pick in 2024Conditional 3rd-round pick in 2025**Giants receive a 2025 third-round pick if Rams make the postseason this year or if Barkley re-signs with the Rams before the 2024 season. If both conditions fail, Giants receive a 2025 5th-rounder.Matthew Stafford is 35. Aaron Donald is 32. Both future Hall of Famers seemingly flirted with retirement last year before recommitting to the Rams for another - maybe one final - Super Bowl push. The Rams have surprised many by looking like legitimate contenders, especially now that Cooper Kupp is back healthy and running alongside leading Rookie of the Year candidate Puka Nacua in the wideout corps.Kyren Williams has dominated snaps in the Rams' backfield since Cam Akers was shipped out of town, and on the surface, the second-year tailback has performed above expectations. But a deeper look reveals that an unsustainably enormous volume of work is boosting Williams' stats, and his efficiency numbers leave a lot to be desired. Through five weeks, Williams has played more snaps than any other running back in the league and ranks second-last in rush yards over expected, according to Next Gen Stats. The Rams must find a way to spell Williams, if not return him to a backup role. The Rams acquired Odell Beckham Jr. as a half-year rental during their 2021 run to the Super Bowl, and the veteran wideout was a crucial part of their success. Adding a talent like Barkley could similarly boost this current edition of Sean McVay's squad. But wait, you say, the Rams have made so many all-in trades in recent years that surely they have no bargaining chips left to offer. Not true, actually. The Rams currently own most of their 2024 draft picks. As a general manager who hasn't selected in the first round since taking Jared Goff in 2016, Les Snead must feel these picks burning a hole in his pocket.A Barkley rental would probably come at a reasonable price, too.At 1-4, the Giants' playoff hopes are essentially dead. So, too, is the idea that Barkley will factor into this team's future. It's reasonable to assume Barkley's not on the best terms with a franchise that refused to sign him long term this past offseason, instead slapping him with the franchise tag while it prioritized locking up Daniel Jones. (Yikes.)If the G-Men bristled at the idea of signing Barkley long term before, why would they come off that stance now that he's a year older and has another multi-week leg injury on his medical record? Using the franchise tag on Barkley again isn't tenable, either. Barkley briefly held out over the summer under the tag but ultimately showed up when the Giants added incentives to his deal. He then watched as Jonathan Taylor got paid by effectively holding out into the season. If tagged again, it's reasonable to assume Barkley will employ a more aggressive holdout strategy. The Giants should get what they can for him before losing him for nothing. The incentives in Barkley's contract require him to make the playoffs to get paid. It should shock no one if he's already angling for a trade to a contender behind closed doors.Mike Evans ChiefsChiefs receiveBuccaneers receiveWR Mike Evans2nd-round pick in 20243rd-round pick in 2025WR Marquez Valdes-ScantlingTravis Kelce is 34 years old and finally breaking down. A hyperextended knee suffered in the Chiefs' final summer practice and a low-ankle sprain suffered in Week 5 have forced Taylor Swift's rumored romantic partner to gut it out. Kelce hasn't been bad, but he also hasn't looked like his usual self. The Chiefs should be concerned about his availability later in the season. Father Time always wins.If the Chiefs don't seem particularly worried about Kelce, it could be because all of their concern is being spent on looking at their receiving depth chart. It's not good. Skyy Moore's considerable training camp buzz has fizzled into just nine catches in five games. Coaches don't trust Kadarius Toney to play more than a handful of snaps. Marquez Valdes-Scantling is good for clearing out safeties a few times a game and that's about it. Rookie Rashee Rice looks promising, but he probably can't shoulder the load here. You know things are bad when some Chiefs fans are pining for JuJu Smith-Schuster's return.Mike Evans is barely on the wrong side of 30, but he's still a beast. The nine-time 1,000-yard receiver can be the red-zone target Kelce is at his best while simultaneously adding some of the downfield juice the Chiefs have been lacking since Tyreek Hill's departure. And Evans can solidify his Hall of Fame credentials with a second Super Bowl title. So why would the 3-1 and NFC South-leading Buccaneers entertain the idea of trading away a franchise legend like Evans? Because they are realists. This is a transition year in Tampa Bay. Baker Mayfield is the quarterback, not Tom Brady. Mayfield is not taking this team to the Super Bowl. You know this. The Buccaneers know this. The Bucs have balked at extending the pending free agent's contract because they know they are on the verge of a total rebuild. Getting what they can for Evans now - and sending him somewhere he can chase another ring as a rental - is the right thing to do.Kirk Cousins JetsJets receiveVikings receiveQB Kirk CousinsConditional 2nd-round pick in 2025**Vikings receive a 2025 second-round pick if Jets make the postseason this year and Cousins plays at least 50% of remaining offensive snaps. If either condition fails to hit, Vikings receive a 2025 third-round pick. The Vikings are 1-4 and Justin Jefferson's on IR - and reportedly in no rush to hurry back to the field since he didn't get the contract extension he sought before the season. It's time to rebuild. The Vikings know this. In actuality, it appears they've known for a while, and the rebuild probably started with the release of longtime stars Adam Thielen and Dalvin Cook in the offseason. It's clear Kirk Cousins won't be back in Minnesota next season, and every game he starts for the Vikings moving forward could push the team further from Caleb Williams range in the 2024 draft. Even if the return is underwhelming, the prudent move for general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is to ship Cousins out of town as soon as possible. The Jets calculated they have a Super Bowl-caliber roster on offense and defense when they made an all-in push to acquire Aaron Rodgers in April. Obviously, it didn't work out. But the equation remains the same, and every snap Zach Wilson takes wastes the potential of this roster. More importantly, by continuing to play the woefully incompetent Wilson, the Jets risk mutiny in the locker room.Cousins is no Rodgers, and he probably can't take any team all the way to the Super Bowl, but he can play caretaker well enough to give the Jets a legitimate shot at postseason play. Maybe Rodgers will be back on the field by then. He certainly seems to think so.
Report: Cousins expected to stay with Vikings in 2023 despite trade talk
It doesn't look like Kirk Cousins is going anywhere this season. The veteran quarterback is expected to stay with the Minnesota Vikings for the remainder of this year, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Cousins has been linked as a potential trade target for the New York Jets, who lost Aaron Rodgers to an Achilles injury in Week 1. However, Cousins reportedly won't look to waive the no-trade clause in his contract, which expires at the end of the 2023 campaign. The 35-year-old has started 85 games since signing with Minnesota in 2018. He recently said he isn't focused on the speculation regarding his future ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline and declined to answer whether he would consider waiving his no-trade clause.Cousins leads the league with 13 touchdown passes in 2023. The Michigan State product, who previously played his first six NFL seasons with the Washington Commanders, has also posted a 67.2% completion rate while tossing 1,498 yards this year.Minnesota enters its Week 6 matchup versus the Chicago Bears with just one win in five games this season. The Vikings aren't expected to re-sign Cousins next year. Fifth-round rookie Jaren Hall is the only other quarterback on the team's active roster.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Broncos release Clark after failing to find trade
The Denver Broncos released pass-rusher Frank Clark after failing to find a trade partner, the team announced Saturday.Clark and the Broncos had attempted to pave the way for a trade by agreeing to a pay cut that reduced his $3.5-million base salary to the minimum of $841,000 for the rest of the season, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports.A reunion with the Kansas City Chiefs is possible for Clark, adds Garafolo. The 30-year-old spent the last four seasons with the Chiefs, winning two Super Bowls, before joining the Broncos on a one-year free-agent deal this past offseason.A hip injury and an illness limited Clark to just two games for the Broncos, and he finishes his short tenure with two tackles and zero sacks. He's the second high-profile defender that Denver has moved on from amid a disappointing start to the season following Randy Gregory's trade to the San Francisco 49ers.Denver reportedly could resort to a firesale to recoup some assets, with wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton as potential candidates.Clark has been a reliable pass-rusher throughout his career, racking up 58.5 quarterback takedowns and 14 forced fumbles. The veteran began his career with the Seattle Seahawks in 2015 and produced his best two seasons with the NFC West club, earning 10 sacks in 2016 and 13 in 2018.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jets missing top corners vs. Eagles after downgrading Gardner to out

Ekeler off injury report, set to return for MNF vs. Cowboys
The Los Angeles Chargers left Austin Ekeler off the injury report Saturday, putting the running back on track to return Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys.Ekeler missed the last three games with an ankle injury. He was a full participant in practice throughout the week. The running back is expected to have a normal workload, head coach Brandon Staley said Saturday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. His only appearance of the 2023 season came in Week 1 when he rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. The Chargers struggled to replace Ekeler's production during his absence. The team rushed for just 91 yards combined over Weeks 2 and 3 before compiling a 155-yard effort on the ground in Week 4.Joshua Kelley received most of the workload while Ekeler was out. However, he struggled to be an efficient option, averaging just 3.6 yards per carry.Quarterback Justin Herbert, who's dealing with a broken finger on his left hand, was also left off the injury report. Report: Kittle fined over $13K for T-shirt taunt vs. Cowboys
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle was fined $13,659 by the league for unsportsmanlike conduct after wearing a T-shirt that said "F--k Dallas" on it last Sunday, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.Kittle wore the shirt under his jersey during the Niners' 42-10 rout over the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. The four-time Pro Bowler revealed the shirt during Jordan Mason's touchdown run in the fourth quarter.Displaying a personal message can result in a fine worth at least $10,000, per NFL rules. Kittle anticipated receiving a penalty from the league for his actions."Probably get a fine," he said Thursday, according to The Associated Press. "Wore a personalized T-shirt. Maybe an inappropriate word. ... It is what it is. It's a decision I made. If they want to fine me, they fine me."However, Kittle has no regrets. "100%. I'd do it again," he said. The T-shirt was in homage to former 49ers linebacker Gary Plummer, who wore a similar one during the 1994 NFC Championship Game against Dallas.Kittle's impact in the victory wasn't limited to his wardrobe. The 2019 first-team All-Pro hauled in three receptions for 67 yards and three touchdowns in the win.Cowboys players and fans didn't take kindly to Kittle's message. Micah Parsons issued a stern warning for the Niners star if the two teams cross paths again."Laugh now, cry later," he said.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NFL Week 6 player props: Razor-thin margins
You never know if you lost because of a rounding error in player prop betting. For example, we'll never know if the official scorer rounded down on Breece Hall's three catches last week. But, as they all came in the first half, just one second-half catch would have been nice. At least when the 49ers ran a trick play from the 38-yard line - not the 37 - the line of scrimmage was definitive. That's the difference in going 7-3 and 5-5 in Week 5, and it shows the razor-thin margin that even the player prop market can provide.K.J. Osborn: Under 40.5 receiving yardsWith Justin Jefferson out for a comfortable matchup against the Bears' defense, Kirk Cousins will be handing out his usual allotment of targets like Oprah. Oddsmakers are aware and have bumped K.J. Osborn's yardage total to 40.5 - the highest he's ever been lined. When Jefferson left the game last week, Brandon Powell excelled, catching four passes for 43 yards on the final two drives. Minnesota will probably want Jordan Addison to get more looks, and Cousins will always look to T.J. Hockenson. With rain and heavy wind in the forecast, it might be challenging for any Vikings receiver to stretch the field, so there's less of a chance that Osborn catches a long one to accumulate a chunk of his prescribed total.Desmond Ridder: Under 202.5 passing yards Last week, we discussed the comically low passing yard total of 175.5 yards for Desmond Ridder. We would have felt awfully foolish had he not gone over for the seventh time in his young career, but, 329 yards later, we were good. Now the market is up 27 yards from last week. Three of Ridder's seven career overs have come without him reaching 200 yards, and his lone under this season was in Week 1, when he was asked to top 205.5 yards.Chuba Hubbard: Over 44.5 rushing yards Among the many possible indictments of the Panthers' management and Frank Reich's staff is that they haven't realized Miles Sanders isn't the best tailback on the team. Chuba Hubbard is better at running (4.4 YPC to 3.1) and catching (85.7% catch rate to 62.5%) - critical elements to the job.Sanders is out this week, so Carolina will be giving the ball to its former Canadian track star. Hubbard's been given double-digit carries 12 times in his three-year career, and he's run for 52 or more yards in 10 of those games.Jaxon Smith-Njigba: Over 27.5 receiving yardsI'm not about to argue with DK Metcalf, and I suggest you don't, either. After the Seahawks' bye week, their star receiver seems to think that it's just a matter of time before rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba pops. If getting their first-round pick going is being discussed internally, then we'll bet that attention goes his direction on Sunday.Gardner Minshew: Over 228.5 passing yardsGardner Minshew's been excellent in relief of Anthony Richardson because he's comfortable with Shane Steichen's offense. That was the point of bringing him in from Philadelphia to back up the Colts' quarterback of the future. In the games he started last year for Steichen, Minshew averaged over 8.5 yards per pass attempt.Minshew's lone start this year - a 227-yard game in the Baltimore rain - is potentially why his total is as low as it is. Minshew managed 274 and 355 yards in his two starts last year, and the Jaguars are allowing the seventh-most yards per pass attempt on defense.P.J. Walker: Under 27.5 pass attemptsYou vaguely recall P.J. Walker's starting stint with the Panthers last season, but do you remember how often he threw the ball in games he finished? If you don't, he threw it 16, 22, 36, and 22 times. The 36-attempt game was in a wild overtime loss in the dome at Atlanta. This Sunday, Cleveland will see rain and high winds, making it a bad idea to throw with a quarterback you just signed.Alvin Kamara: Over 4.5 receptionsGame-script means everything for player usage. The Saints were up 21-0 in 20 minutes at New England last week, so they played it safe by just handing the ball off repeatedly to Alvin Kamara. Look for this to play out more like Kamara's Week 4 season debut, when he caught 13 passes out of the backfield.Baker Mayfield: Over 20.5 pass completionsHad Mike Evans not dropped several Baker Mayfield throws against the Eagles, maybe the Buccaneers' quarterback would have more than 20 completions in Tampa's four games this season. But more relevant to this game is that the Lions are missing three starters in the secondary. The Bucs haven't been able to run the ball this season and are last in the NFL in yards per carry.Emari Demercado: Under 2.5 receptionsThe Cardinals' tailbacks have only caught 15 passes in five games this season. For whatever reason, it hasn't been part of their offensive attack. It looks like Emari Demercado will get his chance to start with James Conner out, but he only caught 11 passes last season at TCU. Furthermore, defending the tailback in the passing game is the Rams' thing. They've allowed the second-fewest yards to opposing running backs this season.James Cook: Over 16.5 receiving yardsBoth of the Bills' tight ends are questionable for this game, so if Josh Allen needs an easy completion with a mismatch against a linebacker, James Cook is a good choice. After a rough trip to London, where he had minus-4 yards rushing, Cook can recover against the poor tackling of the Giants.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Cowboys' Prescott, Lamb discuss receiver's frustrations on SNF
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb said he and quarterback Dak Prescott recently discussed his frustrations on the sideline during the team's 42-10 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5."He (Prescott) came up to me, he's like, 'If you have a problem with anything, just come up to me and we'll talk about it. I don't care how it necessarily looks in the media, right,'" Lamb said, according to Todd Archer of ESPN."But the media is going to do what the media does anyway. If I stand by myself, it's a problem. If I go talk to him and I flare my hands a little bit, it's a problem. Right? At the end of the day, it's just getting down to the nitty-gritty, getting everything understood and both parts being on the same page."Lamb appeared distraught on the sidelines multiple times during last Sunday night's game, including while away from his teammates. The Oklahoma product finished the contest with a team-leading four catches for 49 yards. Lamb has failed to eclipse 55 receiving yards in three straight games. The Cowboys' offense struggled all night, totaling only 197 yards and eight first downs. Prescott was intercepted three times and completed 14 passes for 153 yards."Me as a competitor, man, I like to win," Lamb said. "First and foremost. I don't care how that looks. I am an ultimate competitor."Head coach Mike McCarthy said he talked with Lamb on Monday and wants to get him more touches on offense."I'll just say that if he's not pissed off that he's not getting the ball, then I'm pissed off that he's not pissed off," McCarthy said, per Archer. "He's an impact player, he should feel that way."The Cowboys will look to bounce back on Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Browns' Watson could miss additional weeks with shoulder injury
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson could miss more weeks with a right rotator cuff contusion, a source told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.Cabot adds that Watson's injury is considered a "deep" contusion that presents or functions more like a strain. The 28-year-old, who's already been ruled out for Week 6, won't play again until he's pain-free and can throw normally, according to Cabot. Cleveland will give Watson all the time he needs to rehab the ailment so it's not a lingering issue later in the season.Watson suffered the injury in the third quarter of the team's Week 3 victory over the Tennessee Titans. He didn't play the following game after experiencing "significant" pain in his throwing shoulder during warmups, per Cabot.Head coach Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Watson did some light throwing this week but did not expand on how much time the signal-caller will miss."As you know, trying to ... treat it day-to-day," Stefanski said. "Treat the injury, day-to-day. He's making progress. He's working very hard but just wasn't ready to get to the level where he could practice and be effective just yet. But he's making progress."The Browns traded three-first-round picks to the Houston Texans in March of 2022 for Watson before signing him to a fully guaranteed $230-million contract.Watson has a 5-4 record in nine starts with the Browns, throwing for 1,780 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.Quarterback P.J. Walker will get his first start with Cleveland on Sunday.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Lions' Gibbs, Branch won't play Week 6; St. Brown available
Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs and defensive back Brian Branch have been ruled out of the club's Week 6 contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both first-year players will miss their second consecutive game. Gibbs is dealing with a hamstring issue, while Branch is managing an ankle injury.Rookie tight end Sam LaPorta is questionable with a calf ailment.Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, who missed last week's victory with an abdomen injury, doesn't have a designation entering the weekend and will be available.St. Brown (331 yards) leads the Lions in receiving, while LaPorta (289) ranks third on the team. LaPorta's yardage is second among all tight ends, trailing only Travis Kelce's 346 yards.Guard Jonah Jackson was also ruled out with an ankle issue.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eagles' Carter, Slay out vs. Jets; neither dealing with long-term injuries
Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter and cornerback Darius Slay will miss Sunday's game against the New York Jets.Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said Friday that Carter suffered an ankle injury in Wednesday's practice, according to Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice. Sirianni added that he doesn't expect the injury will "keep him out very long."Meanwhile, Slay is dealing with a knee injury and missed practice all week. Sirianni said Slay's ailment isn't a long-term issue. The Eagles' defense will also be without safety Justin Evans due to a knee injury, while receiver Quez Watkins will be sidelined with a hamstring issue.Carter, the ninth overall pick in this year's draft, is one of the early favorites for Defensive Rookie of the Year after a standout beginning to his NFL career. The 22-year-old has 3.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles in five appearances. He's also PFF's top-ranked defensive tackle.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Giants' Jones out vs. Bills due to neck injury
New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Friday that quarterback Daniel Jones won't play Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.Jones left the team's loss to the Miami Dolphins last week with a neck injury. The ailment prevented the 26-year-old from practicing Wednesday and Thursday.Tyrod Taylor, who replaced Jones in the defeat to the Dolphins, is expected to start. Taylor played for the Bills from 2015-17, making his only Pro Bowl in his first season with the club.Jones joins left tackle Andrew Thomas, center John Michael Schmitz, tackle Matt Peart, and pass-rusher Azeez Ojulari among those ruled out for the prime-time matchup.Running back Saquon Barkley, who's missed three consecutive games with an ankle sprain, is listed as questionable. The tailback was a limited participant all week.Jones dealt with a neck injury in 2021 that forced him to miss six games. He said after last week's loss that the soreness he felt was similar to that injury.Jones and the Giants have struggled this season. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound quarterback has thrown for 884 passing yards with two touchdowns against six interceptions. He's also run for 197 yards and a touchdown but has fumbled four times.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Panthers' Sanders ruled out vs. Dolphins
Carolina Panthers running back Miles Sanders won't play against the Miami Dolphins due to a shoulder injury, the team announced Friday.Sanders leads the team with 190 rushing yards and a touchdown on 61 carries. He's also hauled in 15 receptions for 81 yards.Carolina signed the tailback to a four-year, $25.4-million contract in the offseason after he posted a career-best 2022 campaign as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.Chuba Hubbard is expected to handle the bulk of running back snaps with Sanders sidelined. The third-year runner has 211 total yards through five games but hasn't scored a touchdown this season.Safety Vonn Bell, guard Austin Corbett, safety Xavier Woods, and guard Chandler Zavala were also ruled out Friday.Bell played 100% of the team's defensive snaps in every game to start the year. He was added to the injury report with a quadriceps issue on Thursday before failing to practice Friday.Corbett has yet to make his season debut after tearing his ACL in the final week of the 2022 campaign.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Mahomes: Chiefs' young receivers 'getting better and better'
The Kansas City Chiefs' passing attack continues to run through Travis Kelce, with the star tight end accounting for 124 of Patrick Mahomes' 306 yards in Thursday's win over the Denver Broncos.Despite a lack of consistent production from Kansas City's young wideouts, Mahomes is noticing improvement from the unit."They're getting better and better," Mahomes said on the Prime Video postgame show. "Obviously, we didn't score touchdowns today, but we moved the ball down the field. Just little execution things here and there. Rashee Rice is coming along strong, man. You see when he catches the ball how explosive he is."But I think guys like Justyn Ross, guys like Skyy Moore, they have a place in this offense, and they're going to make plays as the season goes on. It's just going to be about getting them involved early, keep getting their confidence going."Rice was second behind Kelce with a career-high 72 yards on four catches against Denver. Kadarius Toney caught a touchdown but finished with just 9 yards on three receptions. Meanwhile, Moore had just 22 yards, and Ross barely saw the field. The Chiefs have yet to get a 100-yard performance from any of their four main young receivers.Kansas City has one of the NFL's youngest receiver corps - Rice, Moore, and Ross are 23 years old, while Toney is 24 - and the group has come under increasing scrutiny this season as the reigning champions struggle to hit their usual heights on offense.Marquez Valdes-Scantling is the AFC West club's lone established veteran, but he's only produced seven catches for 116 yards this season and had no receptions against Denver.A year after again finishing as the league's top-rated offense, the Chiefs rank ninth in points per game (24.5), 15th in yards per pass attempt (7.1), and 17th in red-zone touchdown percentage (54.17%) through six games.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 6 best bets: Staying hot as the weather cools
A 7-3 week against the spread and a rare upset winner made up for the disappointment of the Broncos falling short in their last chance at being relevant the rest of the way and the Patriots' complete horror show against the Saints. As we get into Week 6, we've already used a short memory to get past the latter.Best bets ATSWe've already discussed the five underdogs with a shot to win outright relative to their price, and as always, they're worth a look against the spread.TEAMSPREADTitans+4Colts+4Commanders+2.5Patriots+3Cardinals+7However, there are more plays worth making this week.Bengals -2.5 (-115)The wild swings in the Bengals' rating continue. Last week, we recognized just how low of a price Cincinnati was at -3 in Arizona. Monitoring the Bengals' valuation has been tricky since their opponent - good, bad, home, road - always seems to be one where it makes some sense to make the Bengals a field goal favorite. In this case, the Bengals are being rated slightly above average, not quite back to their Super Bowl-candidate selves of the offseason. But should they be?If what hindered the Bengals early in the season was Joe Burrow's calf - causing offensive inefficiency and unnecessary strain on the defense - getting closer to 100% should make that go away. He was off the injury report going into last week, and he passed the eye test, often showing the most mobility all season. That version of Burrow means a higher-end rating for the Bengals and a point spread over a field goal, making them a valuable bet lower than -3.5.Panthers +13.5We'll be patient and hope a +14 shows up between the time you read this and kickoff. If it doesn't, that's fine since the Panthers should keep this closer than two touchdowns. The Dolphins' run game gets less explosive without De'Von Achane, so exploiting a shaky Panthers run defense won't be as damaging to Carolina. Every Phins handoff is a blessing since it shortens the game. Miami's offense disguises its 25th-ranked defensive DVOA, and the Panthers have shown that they'll play until the gun in louder road environments - Detroit and Seattle.Frank Reich claims the game plan and calls will be simplified for Bryce Young, which might be enough for one extra extended drive and maybe an extra touchdown, keeping this close enough to cover a number that previous point spreads suggest should be a couple of points lower.Vikings -2.5 (-115)"Blow it up in Minnesota!"We've heard a lot of that this week, haven't we? Kirk Cousins might as well shop for suburban New York rentals. We can't be sure of Justin Jefferson's value to the point spread, but based on last week's closing lines, the Vikings might have been as high as 6-point favorites had the Bears not used a handful of big passing plays to beat the Commanders. We know the difference between +6 and +2.5 is worth about 15% of win probability. With all of Cousins' other targets healthy against a still quite bad Bears defense, is Jefferson's absence worth a full 15%? Crossing over the key number of -3 is a bridge too far - especially if the expected windy weather makes it less likely that either team will strike a long touchdown in the passing game.Texans +1.5Even after a close loss in Atlanta, the Texans did nothing to dissuade anyone from thinking that C.J. Stroud and Co. are on the come up. With Demeco Ryans and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, Houston might already have the coaching advantage over the Saints. The rookie quarterback doesn't have the same turnover proclivity that Mac Jones, Bryce Young, and Ryan Tannehill have been guilty of in New Orleans' wins. If Jordan Love can lead a comeback on the Saints' defense, Stroud can get a lead and stay ahead of the Saints, who aren't likely to have back-to-back high-level performances on the road.Moneyline upset of the weekOur defined parameter for this section is underdogs paying at least +150.Colts (+170) over JaguarsWe focused on the Colts' offense in the round-robin moneyline parlay, but Indy's defense has impressed this season. Middle of the road in DVOA, Indianapolis held the Titans' duo of Derrick Henry and Tyjae Spears to 89 rushing yards last week. The Jaguars beat the Bills thanks to Travis Etienne's big day in London town, but Kwity Paye is expected to rejoin Samson Ebukam and DeForest Buckner in pressuring Trevor Lawrence - who's turned the ball over as frequently as he's found teammates in the end zone.Best 6-point teaserCommanders +8.5 / Chargers +8.5In the season opener, the Falcons won big over Bryce Young in his debut. In the previous two seasons, Atlanta won one game by more than 8.5 points that wasn't a fake Week 18 game. Oddly enough, it was last season against the 49ers. With an alternative line of +8.5 costing well over -300, using a teaser leg of -280 is a decent deal.Speaking of variance, a high total and the style of play of both the Cowboys and Chargers would make you think that a blowout either way is possible, but have you seen these teams? Every evenly-matched game they find themselves in seemingly has to come down to a jaw-dropping, hair-raising conclusion.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Best Week 6 total bets: Expect the 49ers to dominate again
Another 2-1 week brings our season record to 9-6. Let's keep the train going and dive into some total bets for Week 6.Remember, when scouring through the board, don't only look at game totals. There's value in team totals if you expect one to score a lot but aren't certain how much the opposition will contribute.49ers @ Browns over 35.5 pointsThis is the lowest total of the week and will be one of the lowest of the entire season. But I'm still taking the over.Yes, I know the Browns are starting a backup quarterback. But this isn't PJ Walker's first start; he's played a handful of games in the last three seasons. Regardless of how inept - or maybe prolific - Walker might be, this is about the 49ers.The 49ers haven't scored fewer than 30 points once this season and are averaging 33.3. While the Browns still have the third-best scoring defense in the league, I wrote about why that's misleading last week and took the Ravens' team total. The Ravens cruised past the number in a dominant win. The 49ers' offense - which has no weaknesses - isn't slowing down anytime soon and will once again prove why the Browns' defense is overrated. San Francisco might hit this overall by itself, but I'm counting on the Browns - even with a backup quarterback - to contribute with at least a touchdown to get this incredibly low total over 35.5.Colts' team total over 20.5 pointsThe Colts have scored at least 21 points every week, including the first time they played the Jaguars in Week 1. Starting rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson is out for at least the next four games with a shoulder injury.Backup Gardner Minshew has plenty of experience, including two starts this year - both wins. He led his team to 31 and 22 points, respectively. The 4-2 Colts' offense has been surprisingly good with both Richardson and Minshew under center. The Jaguars' defense has been inconsistent. It's improved the last two weeks, surrendering 20 points to the Bills last week and seven points to the Falcons the week before. However, it gave up 37 points to the Texans and a rookie quarterback in Week 3. The Jaguars should win as four-point home favorites, but expect the Colts to score into the 20s.Vikings over 23.5 pointsThe Vikings are spiraling at 1-4 and just lost superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson for the foreseeable future with a hamstring injury. However, Minnesota has a perfect opportunity to get back on track against a weak Bears team.Chicago has looked better the last two weeks, beating the Commanders and coming up just short against the Broncos. However, the offense is carrying the team. Chicago's defense is giving up 31.4 points per game, the third-worst scoring defense in the NFL.While the Vikings are struggling, their defense is the weaker side of the ball. Minnesota's scoring offense ranks in the top half of the league.Expect a high-scoring game from both teams Sunday in Chicago, but the smarter play is taking the Vikings team total over.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. Browns' Watson won't play Week 6 vs. 49ers; Walker to start
The Cleveland Browns won't have Deshaun Watson under center for the second straight game after the quarterback was ruled out of Sunday's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers due to a rotator cuff contusion.Watson is considered day-to-day and wasn't on the practice field for all three sessions this week. The 28-year-old, who sustained the ailment in Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans, also missed Cleveland's loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 4 and rested during the team's bye in Week 5.Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said on Oct. 2 that Watson was cleared by team doctors to play against the Ravens but chose to sit out after warmup. General manager Andrew Berry later said it was a "very easy decision" to sit Watson in Week 4.Stefanski recently announced veteran P.J. Walker would replace Watson instead of Dorian Thompson-Robinson. A fifth-round rookie, Thompson-Robinson started versus Baltimore, finishing the game with 19 completions on 36 pass attempts for 121 yards and no touchdowns with three interceptions.Walker hasn't appeared in a game this season. The 28-year-old made five starts with the Carolina Panthers in 2022, posting three TD passes to three picks. The 2-2 Browns boast one of the NFL's premier defenses and rank second in points allowed. However, Cleveland - which also lost star running back Nick Chubb for the season in Week 2 - has struggled offensively, averaging only 19 points per game. The 5-0 49ers are one of only two unbeaten teams left in the NFL this season.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc.
