Why 1,000-yard king Mike Evans is the NFL's most consistent receiver
When Mike Evans played for Texas A&M, he told his position coach about a vulnerability to exploit. Evans noticed on film that Alabama cornerbacks often fronted a wide receiver as he broke upfield, anticipating a curl route that they'd be ready to spoil. The coverage invited the wideout to go long.Evans stepped on the gas when the teams clashed 10 years ago and caught a 95-yard touchdown pass from Johnny Manziel, humbling the 'Bama defense as he exhibited what makes him excellent. Easy for Manziel to spot at 6-foot-5, Evans was too fast and too strong to tackle once the quarterback fed him the ball. He was unstoppable in the game, exploding for 279 yards on seven catches."Particularly above a certain height, you don't see (players who possess) a lot of speed. It just doesn't happen," said David Beaty, Texas A&M's wide receivers coach at the time."When you see guys like Mike out there," Beaty added, "they wind up making a lot of money."They amass huge yardage, too. Gashing NFL defenses, Evans gained 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first nine seasons, the most in a row to start a career. Invariably productive, he won a Super Bowl alongside Tom Brady and remains the Buccaneers' go-to playmaker as Baker Mayfield takes over at quarterback.Evans' NFL earnings exceed $110 million, according to Spotrac. Drafted seventh overall in 2014, he ranks seventh all-time in receiving touchdowns and ninth all-time in yards through Years 1-9 of a wideout's career, per Stathead. Jerry Rice's record of 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 1986-96 is within eyeshot. Perry Knotts, Richard Mackson (Sports Illustrated) / Getty ImagesThis might be Evans' final season with the Bucs. Championship contenders could battle to acquire the 30-year-old pending free agent before the run-up to Super Bowl LVIII. Or he could stay with Tampa Bay past the Oct. 31 trade deadline, develop chemistry with Mayfield, and put up big numbers for a 10th straight year without stoking drama."He's a sleeper. He doesn't draw a lot of attention to himself with excessive celebrations or anything like that. He goes out, gets the job done, and makes it look easy," said Kerry Bennett, Evans' Texas-based offseason personal trainer."Mike is kind of like watching a Floyd Mayweather fight. He's just going to do what he has to do. It may not look that spectacular. But God dang it, he's been arguably one of the top five - if not one of the best - receivers in the past 10 years."Evans has withstood close calls in his annual quest for 1,000 yards. He surpassed the benchmark in four regular-season finales, getting there with 37 seconds to spare in 2017. The addition of a 17th game counteracted the ones he missed in 2021 because of a hamstring injury and in 2022 for scuffling with Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore, a longtime adversary.Organizational turnover never stops him from delivering. Todd Bowles is Evans' fourth NFL head coach. Dave Canales is his fifth offensive coordinator. He's run routes for seven Buccaneers QBs. Evans palmed overthrows from Jameis Winston, made magic with Ryan Fitzpatrick, and helped Brady look good against the Cowboys in prime time.
Deion: I'd never leave college for NFL coaching job
Deion Sanders has taken over the world of college football. And the Colorado head coach says even if the NFL came knocking, he wouldn't be tempted to leave."I would never do that," Sanders said Friday on "The Rich Eisen Show."Sanders doesn't think his coaching style would translate to the NFL as he would have difficulty motivating highly paid professional athletes."I would start with 53 (players) and come out of the locker room at halftime with about 38," Sanders said.He continued, "I love college. I love (that) the young men are still impressionable. They're not so financially wealthy that they can't hear you. At the next level, some of these guys make so much money they can't hear."Sanders has been the talk of college football after launching Colorado to a 2-0 start this season. He took the job earlier this year after spending the last three seasons at Jackson State. The 56-year-old was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011 after a decorated NFL playing career. Sanders racked up eight Pro Bowl nods, one Defensive Player of the Year selection, and two Super Bowl rings.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Texans' Stroud questionable; safeties Ward, Pitre out
Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is questionable for the Week 2 matchup against the division-rival Indianapolis Colts after Houston added him to its injury report Friday with a right shoulder injury. The rookie passer was listed as a limited participant during practice.Stroud completed 28 of 44 pass attempts in Week 1 for 242 yards, no touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He also ran the ball once for 4 yards. The team ruled out safeties Jimmie Ward and Jalen Pitre with hip and chest injuries, respectively.Ward also missed the team's opening-week loss to the Baltimore Ravens with a hip ailment.Pitre sustained his injury against Baltimore. The 24-year-old spent one night at a hospital with a bruised lung after taking an inadvertent knee to the chest from Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Broncos' Jeudy to make 2023 debut vs. Commanders
Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy is slated to return for Sunday's matchup against the Washington Commanders, head coach Sean Payton announced Friday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Jeudy missed the team's Week 1 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders due to a hamstring injury. The former first-round pick had been a limited participant in practice Wednesday before resuming a full workload Thursday.Jeudy was an important target for quarterback Russell Wilson last season. Despite the Broncos' pedestrian offense, Jeudy set career highs in receptions (67), receiving yards (972), and touchdowns (six).Running back Samaje Perine was Denver's leading receiver in Week 1, recording 37 yards.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rodgers says Achilles rehab plan will 'shock' people: 'Anything's possible'
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers suggested that he plans to return in 2024, saying his torn Achilles rehab will surprise many around the NFL."I've known about this rehab, I have friends who've done it," Rodgers said Friday on "The Pat McAfee Show." "I think what I like to say is give me the doubts. Give me the doubts. Give me the timetables. Give me all the things that you think can, should, or will happen because all I need is that one little extra percent of inspiration. ... Give me your prognostications, and then watch what I do."Rodgers tore his left Achilles tendon four snaps into his Jets debut on Monday Night Football. He said Thursday on Instagram that the surgery to repair his injury went "great.""There's been some guys with some interesting timetables on Achilles returns, but we'll see what happens," Rodgers said. "There's a process. There's certain markers we gotta hit."He added: "There's a lot of different ideas about the overall length of the rehab. I think what I like to say is just because somebody hasn't ever done it a certain way doesn't mean it's not possible. Definitely some odds stacked against me based on age, but I like it. Stack all the odds up against me and see what happens. It's going to be an interesting type of attacking of the rehab because I'm drawing from all these different sources."My entire focus and dedication is on acquiring the most information, and then adding to what I've already put together is a pretty damn good rehab plan that I think will shock some people."The Jets originally announced that the 39-year-old would miss the remainder of the 2023 season. However, the four-time NFL MVP doesn't want to fully rule out a return for the playoffs if New York makes it."As Kevin Garnett said, anything's possible," Rodgers said when asked if he could potentially return this season.Jets head coach Robert Saleh said earlier this week he'd be "shocked" if Rodgers retires following his injury.New York acquired Rodgers in a trade from the Green Bay Packers in April, hoping to end the franchise's 12-year playoff drought. The 10-time Pro Bowler has said multiple times that joining New York has been better than he expected.Offensive struggles, particularly at quarterback, were the Jets' biggest issues last season, as the club ranked 29th in points scored. The AFC East team is now turning to Zach Wilson at quarterback. Wilson replaced Rodgers in Week 1 and helped New York claim a 22-16 comeback victory over the Buffalo Bills in overtime. The Jets visit the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ravens' Andrews questionable vs. Bengals; Stanley, Linderbaum out
Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews is questionable for the team's Week 2 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals with a quad injury, the team announced Friday.Andrews was a full participant in Friday's practice. The 28-year-old was questionable last week but ultimately missed the team's win over the Houston Texans. The Ravens also confirmed left tackle Ronnie Stanley and center Tyler Linderbaum won't suit up for Sunday's AFC North matchup. The offensive linemen are considered week-to-week as they combat knee and ankle sprains, respectively.Isaiah Likely filled in at tight end in Andrews' absence but finished with just one catch on one target for four yards.Andrews, the team's leading receiver the last two seasons, made his third Pro Bowl in 2022 with 847 yards and five touchdowns on 73 receptions.Baltimore will also be without cornerback Marlon Humphrey as he continues to recover from foot surgery, as well as safety Marcus Williams, who was injured in Week 1.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Chiefs' Kelce, Jones to return in Week 2 vs. Jaguars
The Kansas City Chiefs are welcoming back two of their biggest stars in Week 2.Tight end Travis Kelce and defensive lineman Chris Jones are expected to play Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, head coach Andy Reid announced."As long as nothing happens, they'll be out there," Reid said Friday, according to Pete Sweeney of Arrowhead Pride. The tight end was officially listed as questionable. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire was also given the questionable tag after failing to practice Friday due to an illness.Kelce missed Kansas City's Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions with a knee injury, while Jones was sidelined due to his contract situation. The All-Pro defender ended his holdout and signed an incentive-laden contract Monday. Jones finished third for Defensive Player of the Year after racking up a career-high 15.5 sacks and 29 QB hits in 2022.Widely considered football's best tight end, Kelce hyperextended his knee before the season opener. He was a limited participant at practice Wednesday and Thursday this week. The 33-year-old set career highs with 110 receptions and 12 touchdowns last campaign. He also caught 1,338 yards en route to earning the fourth first-team All-Pro berth of his career.Kelce provided an injury update of his own Friday, jokingly reaching for his leg in pain at practice.
NFL Week 2 best bets: Averse to overreaction or quick to adjust?
We tried to focus on our strengths for Week 1. The idea is that bets against the spread should lead the way in this space, and it worked. We passed totals on to theScore's betting writer, Sam Oshtry, and he cashed two of three over/under plays while we went 4-2 against the spread here. Unfortunately, the Steelers cost us our top teaser, and the Colts couldn't hang on to a fourth-quarter lead for our moneyline upset.Best bets ATSWe've already discussed the five underdogs with a shot to win outright relative to their price, and as always, they're worth a look against the spread.TEAMSPREADTitans+3Raiders+9Ravens+3.5Commanders+3.5Cardinals+4.5However, there are more plays worth making this week.Texans -1An NFL debut in Baltimore was bound to be uncomfortable for C.J. Stroud, but things should get easier at home against a Colts defense that benefited from facing the Jaguars without offensive tackle Cam Robinson and scored on a fluke play.On the other side of the ball, DeMeco Ryans gets to scheme against a rookie quarterback instead of the uncertainty of what to expect from Lamar Jackson and his new offensive coordinator, Todd Monken. The Texans' defense allowed just 265 yards to Baltimore and already has a successful plan for dealing with a mobile quarterback - which is the Colts' lone running option.Rams +7.5Everyone talks about overreactions to Week 1 results, but what about being nimble and not locked into preconceived notions? Matthew Stafford sure looked like his old self in Seattle. If he's healthy enough to be that top-10 quarterback, then the Rams can't be rated alongside teams like the Panthers, Buccaneers and Commanders - and therefore they can't be over a touchdown to their division rival at home unless the 49ers are definitively the best team in the NFL, which might be an overreaction itself.Jets +8.5The Jets didn't make the round-robin underdog moneyline parlay because the price on the moneyline makes sense based on how likely the Cowboys are to win outright. Zach Wilson's presence has thrown the Jets' team rating into the bottom quarter of the league. Along with this game's low total, that means a closer game is more likely than the spread suggests. Look for the Jets' defense to slow the Cowboys while their run game opens things up for more throws to Garrett Wilson, who caught all five passes thrown his way on Monday night.Patriots +3The headlines from Dolphins-Chargers lauded Miami's speed - as if we weren't fully aware of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. The Patriots didn't have to face Tua Tagovailoa in the win over Miami last year, but even in 2022's Week 1 loss, the New England defense allowed just 242 net passing yards, and they might be better this season. The concerning thing for the Dolphins is a run defense that allowed 233 yards on 40 carries in Los Angeles. That's the kind of offensive strategy that the Patriots would be more than happy to deploy with Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott, and they couldn't try it against the Eagles' defensive line while facing a sizable deficit early.Moneyline upset of the weekOur defined parameter for this section is underdogs paying at least +150.Cardinals +175The Cardinals held the Commanders to 3.6 yards per play in Washington last week and got to the quarterback for five sacks. Since their head coach was the defensive coordinator of the NFC champion Eagles last season, maybe he knows a thing or two about creating havoc, even with what are perceived to be lesser players. What if the seven sacks the Giants allowed last week weren't just a matter of Dallas being awesome? The Cardinals signed Josh Dobbs as their starting quarterback a week before the season, and the market reacted by betting the under on their win total, even though Arizona's brass thinks Dobbs gives them a better chance to win. Another week of practice gets him more comfortable with the plays that will work, and the Cards can scheme open explosive athletes Rondale Moore and Marquise Brown. The Giants had a great run to the divisional round of the playoffs last year, but they were regularly rated as a below-average team. What if Sunday night was somewhat indicative of a club that finished the regular season 2-5-1 and then got crushed by the Eagles?Best 6-point teaserBears +8.5 / Steelers +8.5 (-120)It's a matter of accounting, but spoiler: The Steelers will show up as our best bet for Monday, so we've left them off our list above. At +8.5, though, they're too good to pass up to close a two-team 6-pointer.One traditionally attractive look for a teaser leg occurs when a team moves from +3 to +2.5. The spread coming off that key number hints that the betting market thinks highly of the Bears' chances at keeping it close. That move is a big deal against the spread, but the line change on 6-point teasers - going from +9 to +8.5 - isn't nearly as significant since a winning margin of 9 is much more rare.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Commanders' Young cleared for Week 2
Washington Commanders defensive end Chase Young has been cleared to play and will be active in Week 2, the team announced Friday.Young missed the club's Week 1 win over the Arizona Cardinals with a neck stinger that bothered the edge rusher through the end of the preseason. The 24-year-old was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice before being a full participant Thursday and Friday.Young missed the majority of the 2022 campaign after tearing his right ACL in 2021. He played in the team's final three games last year, registering five total tackles and one quarterback hit.The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 draft has struggled to recreate the impact of his Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign. Young has just 1.5 sacks and three tackles for loss in the 12 games he's played over the last two seasons after posting 7.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss in 2020.Young's 2023 debut will come against the Denver Broncos, who allowed two sacks and seven tackles for loss in a Week 1 defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Best Week 2 total bets: Bounce back spot for Patriots
Unders went 12-4 in Week 1, a sign that many teams displayed sloppy football. That's not entirely surprising as players shake off the rust and teams work out new quirks in their offense to open the season. We went 2-1 on our total plays in Week 1. Let's build on that this weekend. Here is every game's total and our best bets for Sunday.Week 2 TotalsMatchup TotalChiefs @ Jaguars51.5Packers @ Falcons40.5Ravens @ Bengals46.5Bears @ Bucs41.5Seahawks @ Lions47.5Colts @ Texans39.5Chargers @ Titans45.5Raiders @ Bills46.549ers @ Rams44.5Giants @ Cardinals39.5Commanders @ Broncos38.5Jets @ Cowboys38.5Dolphins @ Patriots46.5Saints @ Panthers39.5Browns @ Steelers38.5Patriots Over 22.5 pointsThe Patriots trailed 16-0 to the Eagles in Week 1 before they even had a chance to blink. Part of that deficit came from Mac Jones throwing a pick-6. But as the game progressed, Jones and the Patriots' offense settled in against a defense that led the league in sacks last season.New England's offensive line gave Jones a clean pocket to work from. He finished the day 35-of-54 for 316 yards. With Bill O'Brien back in New England calling plays, the Patriots offense should significantly improve this season. From quarters two through four, they showed that.Jones' 54 throws - compared to just 22 running plays - is unsustainable and certainly not a recipe for success, but that was due to New England trailing most of the contest. O'Brien will ideally want to find a balance between the pass and ground game moving forward. The Dolphins' defense - New England's Week 2 opponent - isn't as dominant as the Eagles'. Even though Miami won Sunday, it gave up 34 points to the Chargers. Granted, Jones is not Justin Herbert, and the Patriots' skill position players are not nearly as talented as Los Angeles'. However, it still showed there are holes in the Miami defense, and you can expect the Patriots to exploit them. The game total is 46.5. The Patriots should hang around against a divisional rival and build on their Week 1 performance by putting up more than 22 points Sunday.Cardinals under 16.5 pointsThe Cardinals competed in their season opener against the Commanders before Washington pulled away late. But Arizona scored 16 points, which was surprising for the projected worst team in the NFL.Despite a surprisingly solid performance in a loss, Josh Dobbs is still the starting quarterback for Arizona, which tells you everything you need to know about where the Cardinals are headed. Dobbs attempted 30 passes but only managed to throw for 132 yards and finished with a 21 QBR.The Cardinals play another middling NFC East team this week. Middling is actually putting it nicely after the embarrassing performance the Giants showcased last week.New York lost 40-0 to the Cowboys on Monday Night Football in the Meadowlands. It's almost impossible to lose to a team by 40 and fail to score a single point in a game, but the Giants did it.Whether that contest was more of an indictment of the Cowboys' prowess or the Giants' ineptitude remains to be seen. But we won't find that out this week given New York's opponent. There's no team anyone would rather see after an embarrassing loss than the Cardinals. The only thing the Giants can do is watch the tape and then burn it. Brian Daboll is a great coach and motivator. There's no doubt he's going to flip the mindset of his team and have the players ready to go in Arizona.Given the expectations, 16 points with Dobbs under center was actually an impressive performance. However, the Cardinals will take a step back this week and remind everyone why they'll have the first overall pick in April's draft.Rams/49ers over 44.5 pointsBoth the Rams and 49ers dropped 30 points in Week 1 routs. Don't expect that type of offensive showcase in Los Angeles on Sunday, but this total is too low for two offenses capable of explosions and with masterminds Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan calling the plays. The Rams entered this season entirely under the radar after last year's debacle. They impressed in a season-opening win over a Seahawks group that made the playoffs in 2022. Matthew Stafford, in the final years of his career, threw for 334 yards, had a quarterback rating of 91.3, and looked mobile in the pocket - even without top weapon Cooper Kupp. The 49ers' defense is on an entirely different level than Seattle's, but the Rams' offense will shock some people this season.Although San Francisco's defense usually steals the headlines, its offense looked sharp against the Steelers, who have a great pass rush. Brock Purdy shined with 220 yards and two touchdowns. He silenced any doubts about whether he deserved the starting job - at least for one week. It helps he has explosive playmakers all over the field to relieve some pressure off of him.San Francisco's defense is frightening for any opponent, but the Rams will be prepared and help get this game over 44 points.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. Report: Eagles fear Maddox suffered season-ending torn pectoral
The Philadelphia Eagles fear cornerback Avonte Maddox suffered a torn pectoral during Thursday's win over the Minnesota Vikings, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Maddox is expected to get a second opinion to confirm what would be a season-ending injury, Schefter adds. It's the latest in a long line of injuries for Maddox. He endured three separate multi-week absences last campaign, only appearing in nine regular-season games and two of the Eagles' three playoff contests. Maddox also missed 13 games from 2018-20.Mario Goodrich, a former undrafted free agent, replaced Maddox in the slot against Minnesota. The Eagles' secondary depth was already under strain as James Bradberry was out with a concussion and Reed Blankenship was sidelined due to a rib injury.Second-year cornerback Josh Jobe stepped in for Bradberry in Week 2. The Eagles could potentially keep Jobe on the outside opposite Darius Slay and replace Maddox with Bradberry, or hand Goodrich the full-time slot role to maintain the productive outside duo of Slay and Bradberry.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cowboys' McCarthy disappointed he won't face Rodgers: 'This is tough'
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has mixed emotions heading into Sunday's matchup against the New York Jets.McCarthy was set to face Aaron Rodgers, with whom he coached for 13 seasons in Green Bay and won a Super Bowl. But that'll no longer be the case after the Jets quarterback suffered a season-ending torn Achilles."Yeah, I've definitely reached out to him," McCarthy said Wednesday, according to Nick Harris of DallasCowboys.com. "It's great to compete against people you care about. Him and I have been through a lot together. I have a tremendous amount of love for him. This is tough. I know he was very excited about this chapter in his life, and I was looking forward to seeing him this weekend."Rodgers was injured on the fourth snap of his regular-season debut with the Jets. He announced on his Instagram stories Thursday that he underwent surgery a day earlier and that it "went great."While McCarthy is disappointed Rodgers won't be playing in Sunday's game, he remains focused on getting a win."I mean, that's only natural to want to play against a great player," he said. "But at the end of the day, we need to get to 2-0. Our focus has been good today. That's what we're looking at."Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Tyreek: I'll 'dominate' no matter how Patriots cover me on SNF
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill doesn't think the New England Patriots will be able to come up with a defensive game plan to stop him on Sunday Night Football."I'm still going to dominate that no matter what," Hill said when asked about the possibility of facing double coverage often in Week 2, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. "I still got a job to do, and that's to run my routes. You put two guys on me, one guy on me, or three guys on me, I'm still going to run my route to get open."The Patriots, led by one of the most respected defensive minds in NFL history in head coach Bill Belichick, limited Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to 170 passing yards and an 89.2 passer rating in Week 1. Hurts finished the game with 5.2 yards per pass attempt.Hill is coming off one of the best games of his career after mostly facing single coverage in Miami's 36-34 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1. The All-Pro pass-catcher ran 21 single-coverage routes versus L.A., racking up six catches for 151 yards and two touchdowns, according to PFF. He finished the game with 11 receptions and 215 yards. The 29-year-old, who joined Miami in the 2022 offseason as part of a trade from the Kansas City Chiefs, recently said one of his career goals is to top 2,000 receiving yards in a campaign. However, Hill said he doesn't keep track of his yardage total during the season."I just let my oldest son do that," Hill said. "He was like, 'Hey Dad, we're at 215.' He does the math for me, so we're on the way."Hill amassed 149 receiving yards in two games against the Patriots last season. He didn't have any TD receptions but scored a touchdown on the ground.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Hurts downplays sideline spat with Brown: 'Everybody wants to contribute'
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts downplayed his heated exchange with A.J. Brown during the team's win Thursday over the Minnesota Vikings, adding that the receiver was disgruntled with his lack of involvement."I think everybody wants to make plays, and everybody wants to contribute," Hurts said, according to ESPN's Tim McManus. "I have no worry about him. He's a great player, a great teammate, a great friend, and we'll do anything and everything to win."With the passing attack struggling, a frustrated Brown approached Hurts at the start of the fourth quarter. After the two stars exchanged words for a few seconds, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni intervened to calm Brown down.

Denver Broncos pass-rusher Frank Clark is set to miss a couple of weeks with a hip injury suffered in Wednesday's practice, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Clark's injury is not considered serious, but he will be week-to-week, Rapoport adds. The veteran was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice and failed to take part in Thursday's session. After spending the last four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Clark signed with the Broncos as a free agent in the offseason. Giants' Waller: Hamstring injury not a long-term concern
New York Giants tight end Darren Waller doesn't envision his right hamstring injury, which popped up late last week and made him questionable for Week 1, continuing to be an issue. No, not really," Waller said when ESPN's Jordan Raanan asked if it was a long-term concern.Waller did play in the Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and added that he plans to play Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. The former Pro Bowl tight end missed eight games last season due to a right hamstring ailment. He said that this time around, it's a different type of injury to the same area."It more so has to do with the nerve that was behind it," Waller explained Monday, according to Pat Leonard of The Daily News. "So, it's not really a muscular issue. It was more so a little bit something different, like nerve-wise."Waller added Thursday that the two injuries are very different in terms of severity."Last year, there was legit times where I couldn't run because my hamstring is pulled," Waller said, per Raanan. "But I can run at practice (Thursday), run routes and do it for two hours, so I'm like, 'I feel great.'"The Giants acquired Waller in an offseason trade with the Las Vegas Raiders in hopes that he would become a marquee target for Daniel Jones. He caught three passes for 36 yards on five targets in the regular-season opener.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Report: Steelers' Heyward to have groin surgery, expected to miss 8 weeks
Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward is scheduled to have groin surgery Thursday and is expected to miss about eight weeks, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Heyward suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Steelers' Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He tried playing through the ailment for a few snaps before Pittsburgh ruled him out at halftime. The Steelers officially placed Heyward on injured reserved later Thursday."It's very tough, but man, we got more dogs too," Steelers linebacker Kwon Alexander said Monday, according to Brooke Pryor of ESPN."Cam is very tough. He's a veteran, been in the league long time. He knows how to play the game well, but we've got guys that got to step up and get ready for the action."Rookie defensive lineman Keeanu Benton is expected to see an increased role with Heyward sidelined. Other interior linemen on the Steelers include DeMarvin Leal, Armon Watts, and Larry Ogunjobi. The Heyward injury adds to Pittsburgh's woes, as wide receiver Diontae Johnson will reportedly miss multiple weeks with a hamstring ailment.Heyward has been with the Steelers since they selected him in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Brandin Cooks is dealing with a sprained MCL, and his status for Sunday's game against the New York Jets is in doubt, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports.Cooks has a Grade 1 sprain, which isn't considered a multi-week knee injury, adds Moore.Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday that the wideout "has a chance" to play in Week 2, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic.Cooks also maintained a positive outlook for Sunday."I'm just working, and we'll see where we're at," he said. "I feel good."Cooks was seen working to the side with the rehab team during Thursday's practice.
Week 2 round-robin underdog parlay: Target locked on vulnerable Bills
This is our guilty pleasure. The one parlay we'll play each week in the name of responsible betting and bankroll management. It just happened to win in Week 1.The big cash went out the window early when the 49ers ran over the Steelers in the first half and a controversial ruling hurt the Titans' chances of victory and a medium win for us. But the Lions, Buccaneers, and Raiders scored upsets to net about a unit and a half. You can't go broke turning a profit - and a 4-1 ATS record helps - so we're back for more underdog fun.How it worksWe parlay five underdogs together - which we also bet against the spread - in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we'll use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each for .1 units. You'll likely double your money if three teams pull off the upset. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win, you'll be diving into a gold doubloon silo like a young Scrooge McDuck.Who to playRavens (+160) over BengalsYou can blame it on the rain all you want, but there shouldn't be any excuses for the Bengals' offense averaging a league-low 2.6 yards per play in Week 1. Like many other star quarterbacks, Joe Burrow didn't play in the preseason, but unlike his peers, he had to miss practice time with an injury to his calf. One week - plus a location change and the opponent - may put all the pieces back into place. But let's bet on the Ravens - despite a suboptimal injury report - since they're clicking at a higher frequency and still have enough on defense to replicate their effort in last season's wild-card round when they held the Bengals to 4.2 YPP.Titans (+140) over ChargersRyan Tannehill played poorly in New Orleans, but the Titans almost won anyway. Not only did he skip preseason action, but he also missed much of the end of last season. The Chargers' defense might be catching a break because it got roasted by a scary Dolphins offense, but the Titans will attack the inside and outside of that unit at home in Nashville. Tennessee came up short last week, but Mike Vrabel's record as an underdog is impeccable, improving to 61.5%. The Titans are more than live this week.Raiders (+325) over BillsIt sure didn't look like Zach Wilson was much of a threat in relief of Aaron Rodgers on Monday night, but the Bills gave up a massive run and a couple of chunk plays to the Jets' tailbacks in the passing game. New York was 5-for-5 when it threw to its top receiver. Josh Jacobs and Davante Adams can have the same success but at a higher volume. Given the short week, Josh Allen's proclivity for turning the ball over won't get fixed, which creates the possibility of a surprising result.Cardinals (+200) over GiantsThe Week 1 numbers weren't pretty for the Cardinals on offense. They recorded 3.6 yards per play in Washington, but having watched every play, the effort was there. That effort was on clearer display in their defense, as it was more than a little frisky in causing problems for Sam Howell. They also gave up just 3.3 yards per carry. The Giants tied the Bengals for yards per play futility in Week 1, so the Cardinals can hold up against their run game, forcing Daniel Jones into being pass-heavy and reliant on the protection of his offensive line. Meanwhile, another week of reps for Joshua Dobbs - with a better idea of what worked for the offense last week - might even get the Cardinals closer to functional offensively, which might be enough for a win.Commanders (+167) over BroncosIf the Broncos can lose at home to the Raiders, they can fall to the Commanders. That's hard to do without giving up much of anything on the ground to last year's leading rusher, Josh Jacobs (48 yards on 19 carries). For all the hoopla over Sean Payton, the Broncos managed just 4.5 yards per play against a Raiders defense no one thought that highly of. Now they've got to deal with the Commanders' defensive line, which all but won them their opener. How the odds look this week:PARLAYODDS (Approx.)BAL+LV+TEN+2500BAL+LV+ARZ+3100BAL+LV+WSH+2800BAL+TEN+ARZ+1800BAL+TEN+WSH+1600BAL+ARZ+WSH+2000LV+TEN+ARZ+2900LV+TEN+WSH+2600LV+ARZ+WSH+3200TEN+ARZ+WSH+1800BAL+LV+TEN+AZ+WSH+20000Who are your five underdogs for a football betting lottery ticket?Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. DK Metcalf: My effort wasn't there vs. Rams
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf took some blame for the team's ugly season-opening loss against the Los Angeles Rams."I really can't speak for everybody else's, but my part was just effort," Metcalf said Wednesday, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. "And play after play, just 100% effort, it wasn't just there like it's been in the past. So, I know that's one thing I've got to clean up."Metcalf finished the game with three catches for 47 yards and one touchdown. He didn't register a single target in the second half."I can't tell you," Metcalf said when asked why he didn't give a full effort. "I think it's just an inward experience, a lack of preparation on my part. Just got to do a better job preparing during the week and knowing my job."Metcalf drew a taunting flag in the fourth quarter after getting into it with Rams coaches and players while the team attended to injured cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who Metcalf shoved on the preceding play.Head coach Pete Carroll told reporters Monday that he would have a long talk with Metcalf about the incident."That's between me and Pete," Metcalf said when asked about the conversation with his coach. "But the gist of the message was that I'm a target now, and I've got to carry myself as such and not continue to hurt the team. That's what I'm going to do."The Seahawks offense as a whole struggled Sunday, totaling just 12 yards on 14 plays in the second half.Seattle takes on the Detroit Lions in Week 2.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 2 betting storylines: Can the Dolphins keep the train rolling?
Week 2 kicks off with Thursday Night Football between the Eagles and Vikings. Beyond this NFC showdown, Sunday's games feature a ton of storylines, including AFC contenders potentially bouncing back, a rookie quarterback duel, and the Dolphins' resurgence. Let's dive in.Can AFC contenders bounce back? The Chiefs, Bills, and Bengals - the three favorites to win the AFC - all lost their season openers. Kansas City started its season on Thursday Night Football without Travis Kelce due to injury and Chris Jones due to a contract dispute, leading to a Lions upset win. There isn't much concern among the media or betting markets about the Chiefs as they remain Super Bowl favorites. After all, as long as Patrick Mahomes is available, Kansas City is almost guaranteed to play football in January. No team wants to dig itself into a 0-2 hole. Despite being favored by three points in a rematch of last year's AFC divisional-round game, it won't be easy for the Chiefs to win in Jacksonville this Sunday. The Jaguars have the sixth-best odds to win the AFC and pulled away late from the Colts in Week 1 to escape with a win.The difference for the Chiefs this week is Jones resolved his dispute with the team and Kelce is expected to play, providing the club with major boosts on each side of the ball. Both offenses are expected to explode with the total at 51.5, the highest of the weekend. The next team with little to worry about is the Bengals, despite the Browns walloping them. Joe Burrow missed more than half of training camp recovering from a calf injury, so it'll take some time for him and the rest of the offense to find their rhythm.Remember last year when Cincinnati started the season 2-3? The club won 10 out of its final 11 games and ended up in the AFC championship. This week, the Bengals are 3.5-point home favorites against the Ravens, an AFC North rival. While anyone concerned with the Bengals or Chiefs needs to take a deep breath, Buffalo fans' panic level may be justified. The Bills' offense looked atrocious against the Jets Monday night, and the blame falls on the shoulders - or arm - of Josh Allen. The signal-caller had four turnovers, including three interceptions, tying the most he's ever thrown in a game. The Jets' defense is one of the best in the league, and there were a ton of emotions surrounding the evening. That's not to make excuses for the Bills' offense but to provide optimism that it shouldn't be this grim for them the rest of the way. However, Allen's reckless decisions are a concern. He has a league-leading 83 turnovers since entering the NFL in 2018.The Bills have an easier test this weekend at home against the Raiders. Buffalo is an 8.5-point favorite in the matchup despite Las Vegas' thrilling win over the Broncos last weekend.Allen was +120 to throw a pick on the road against the Jets. Those odds have shortened after last week's catastrophe. He's +105 to throw an interception against the Raiders.A parlay of the Bills, Bengals, and Chiefs to win Week 2 is +199 ($10 to win $19).Rookie QB BattleAlthough there will be little excitement when the Texans and Colts play, the game could be a glimpse of the league's future with two rookie quarterbacks competing head-to-head for the first time. The Colts' Anthony Richardson and Texans' C.J. Stroud were the fourth and second picks, respectively, in the 2023 NFL Draft, forever linking their career trajectories. Both teams started the season with a loss, meaning one of these guys will earn their first career win on Sunday. The Colts are slight road favorites.Richardson had a roller-coaster debut, which is to be expected for a first-time NFL starter. He completed 67% of his passes while throwing for 223 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He led his team to 21 points in a loss.Stroud threw for 242 yards but didn't throw an interception or a touchdown in an inconspicuous debut.Richardson has better odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year at +550 than Stroud does at +800.For this week, though, oddsmakers expect Stroud to outduel Richardson through the air. Stroud's total passing yards are set at 215.5, while Richardson's are at 198.5.However, Richardson is considered the more mobile player. His rushing yards line is 45.5, while Stroud's is 12.5. Can Tua and Miami replicate Week 1 performance? While Tua Tagovailoa has been maligned over the last year, he eliminated any doubt about his potential as a franchise quarterback in the season opener.Tagovailoa threw for a remarkable 466 yards and three touchdowns in a dramatic win. He became the favorite to win the MVP following the game.Tyreek Hill was a huge beneficiary of Tagovailoa's performance - or maybe it's the other way around. Hill led all receivers with 215 yards and two touchdowns. He leaped four players to become the favorite to win Offensive Player of the Year at +700. He was +1800 before the season. However, this was all against a suspect Chargers defense. Can Tagovailoa, Hill, and the Dolphins replicate this performance, or anything close to it, against a sturdy Patriots defense in Foxborough? The Dolphins are 3-point favorites. The Patriots lost in Week 1 but forced an elite Eagles offense into difficult situations, where Philadelphia failed to consistently move the ball most of the second half.Bill Belichick is known for his exceptional defensive game planning and unique wrinkles. It's hard to completely shut down an offense as prolific as Miami's, but if anyone can do it, it's Belichick.Tagovailoa and Hill are expected to come back down to earth this week. Tagovailoa's total passing yards are set at 265.5, and Hill's receiving yards are at 83.5.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. Thursday Night Football best bets: 3 for the money in Vikings-Eagles
We can blame the Lions for fumbling right before what would have been a first-half field goal, but we can't blame them for running out the clock in an upset victory. Detroit's team total fell three points short, and we split the player props in last week's attempt to show us the money. In the season's second Thursday nighter, we're going "Two for the Money," like the 2005 sports-gambling movie in which Matthew McConaughey and Al Pacino go toe-to-toe, spouting now-antiquated betting systems in the days of 900 numbers and tout services selling lies and other nonsense. It's not good, but it is reliably entertaining - like Kirk Cousins against quality teams in prime time.'Certainty in an uncertain world'The Eagles started the 2022 season on the road and, after taking a big lead, held on to win. In Week 2, they were at home for a Monday night game against the Vikings and beat them soundly. Using that reasoning to like Philadelphia would be legitimate, but, instead, we'll look at how that game was won and what's happened in the year since. The Vikings won their next seven games and went 12-3 the rest of the way, beating bad teams and backup quarterbacks while convincing much of the betting public that they were good. However, they lost four of their last five games against the spread, including an outright loss at home in the playoffs. Months later, the market still hasn't caught up to appropriately downgrade the Vikings. That's why they sat throughout the summer as touchdown favorites over Tampa Bay in Week 1. At the last minute, money came in on the Bucs to drop the line closer to a field goal. Everybody won. With a spread of -6.5, the betting market still rates the Vikings as an average football team. That's giving them too much credit. It also might be giving the Eagles too little.Nick Sirianni acknowledged that he should have played his offensive stars in the preseason after a subpar effort in New England, but there's a chance that's the best defense the Eagles will see all season. The Vikings aren't that. With a quick turnaround, and even ignoring the record that the favorites have against the spread on Thursday night, the Eagles should be over -7 rather than under it. We're hoping for a win to close a teaser from Monday, and an outright win will see us advance in survivor contests, but laying the points with Philadelphia is also worth a look.Pick: Eagles (-6.5)'I don't want your money, I want your bookies' money'In their Week 2 tilt last season, the Eagles swarmed Justin Jefferson. On 12 targets, his longest catch went for 11 yards. Even through a successful season in which Jefferson was the Offensive Player of the Year, the Vikings knew they needed another explosive option. Jordan Addison caught four balls for 61 yards last week, and he can be found lined at 42.5 receiving yards.I don't want your Addison money, I want the Eagles' money. I'm backing the Eagles' defense to drape Jefferson again, as his yardage total is lined in the low 90s - the same neighborhood it's usually in despite a better opponent.Pick: Justin Jefferson under 92.5 receiving yards (-115)'Thank you sir, may I have another'If you called a toll-free number looking for Dallas Goedert's stats in the box score against the Patriots, I assure you, he was on the field. He participated in his usual 90% of the snaps. Whether he was staying in to help block the Patriots' blitz or being overlooked in the passing game, getting Goedert involved will help get the Eagles' offense back on track after just 5.2 yards per pass attempt last week.Goedert had his third-most receiving yards against the Vikings last season, but Minnesota will still be focused on stopping Hurts on the ground along with his pair of deadly receivers. That makes Goedert a good choice for high volume, especially near the goal line, and we won't call you asking for a commission after it wins.Pick: Dallas Goedert anytime touchdown (+200)Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. Tua ignoring criticism of arm strength following season-opening win
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa believes that his opening-week performance should silence detractors."I don't care," Tagovailoa said Wednesday when asked if people still doubted his throwing power, according to the Miami Herald's Daniel Oyefusi. "466. That's what 466 is if I can't throw deep."Tagovailoa delivered a dazzling display, completing 28 of 45 pass attempts for 466 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. The fourth-year standout was named the AFC's Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career. But the 25-year-old was more than willing to share the limelight with his teammates in a "good team win." Tagovailoa credited his blockers, receivers, running backs, and Miami's defense in securing a thrilling 36-34 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in its season opener. While the Dolphins signal-caller appreciates earning a win in the opener, he also understands there tend to be overreactions after Week 1. Tagovailoa recognizes that the Dolphins have 16 games remaining against really good teams."You're either going to win the Super Bowl after you win your first game, or you're the worst team ever and everything that comes with that," he said. The Alabama alum was scrutinized after he was accused of not working out or following recommendations from the team's nutritionist during the offseason. Tagovailoa made changes to his regimen after suffering at least two concussions during his 2022 campaign. He led the NFL with a 105.5 passer rating last year before he was sidelined for the final two games of the regular season and missed Miami's wild-card round game against the Buffalo Bills. The Dolphins will take on the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football in Week 2.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Mayfield figured out Vikings' hand signals in Bucs' Week 1 victory
Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Rachaad White revealed that quarterback Baker Mayfield decoded the Minnesota Vikings' defensive hand signals in Week 1, ESPN's Jenna Laine reports. In an interview, White recounted Mayfield running into the locker room at halftime and saying, "I know all these signals. If they do this, they're going to Cover-2, they do this, they're going to Cover-3. Every time I alert this, they drop and they do this signal, they drop him back to this."The running back continued, "And I'm like, 'wow, that's amazing.' I mean, I know certain coverages, but I don't know a lot like that."Sign stealing is not illegal in the NFL. Mayfield didn't violate any rules by figuring out the Vikings' hand signals. The veteran signal-caller believes that he provided an edge for first-year offensive coordinator Dave Canales. He also complimented Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, despite figuring out his play calls."It took us a little bit to adjust but you try to find every advantage possible to win," he said.Mayfield, who is from Austin, Texas, denied any similarity to the tactics of a team from his home state."Listen, I know I'm in Tampa, but I'm a Texas Rangers fan, not a Houston Astros fan, so we're not gonna get into that," Mayfield said Wednesday in regards to the Astros' 2017 sign-stealing scandal. The 2018 first overall pick finished the contest by completing 21 of 34 pass attempts for 173 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-17 victory over Minnesota.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. "Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I begin the healing process today."The night is darkest before the dawn. And I shall rise yet again."

Saints GM: Carr made plays we haven't seen here for a while in debut
New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis is pleased with what he saw from Derek Carr during the quarterback's debut with the team on Sunday."I think he did more than (manage the game)," Loomis said of Carr on the "Saints Coaches Show." "He made some plays that we haven't seen made here for a while. Off-platform throws, plays breaking down, him solving problems. He did a lot of really good things."The Saints, who signed Carr to a four-year deal in the offseason, have been looking for stability at quarterback since Drew Brees retired after the 2020 season. New Orleans started five different QBs and didn't make the playoffs between 2021-22. Jameis Winston led the team with seven starts two years ago, while Andy Dalton started 14 games last season.Carr, a four-time Pro Bowler who spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, completed 23 of 33 pass attempts for 305 yards and one touchdown against one interception in Week 1, helping the Saints claim a 16-15 home victory in his first game with the club.Loomis specifically praised Carr for his aggressiveness late in the matchup versus Tennessee. The 32-year-old completed a 41-yard pass to receiver Rashid Shaheed on a third-and-6 with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter and the Saints leading by one. Running back Jamaal Williams was then able to convert another first down a few plays later to seal the victory for New Orleans."I always appreciate when you go out and you try to win a game as opposed to trying not to lose a game," Loomis said. "It was a hallmark of Sean Payton's time here as a head coach, he was always trained to call plays to win games and I appreciate that when you do that. Look, sometimes it doesn't work out, but I think that's the best way to play in the NFL."A postgame video showed a mic'd-up Carr asking the Saints' coaching staff for "another shot" at throwing to Shaheed on a go route before the team's game-winning drive. Carr then told Shaheed, "Be ready if I give you a go route to end this thing."Carr's pass to Shaheed traveled 51.7 yards and was the longest completion by air yards during the NFL's early Week 1 slate, according to Luke Johnson of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Chiefs' Chris Jones 'super pleased' with new deal after lengthy holdout
Chris Jones is happy to be back with the Kansas City Chiefs - even though his post-holdout deal didn't make him one of the NFL's highest-paid defenders."I'm super pleased with how it turned out," the All-Pro defensive lineman said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher. "I'm back in the building. I'm excited to be back, thankful for the organization. They (were) able to boost my salary up to make up for the fines and everything. I'm super grateful for that."Jones wasn't with the team while negotiating a new deal and didn't play in Week 1 due to his contract situation. The 29-year-old reportedly wanted a contract worth $30 million annually but ended his holdout ahead of Week agreeing to an incentive-laden one-year pact that includes a base salary of $19.5 million. His average annual salary ranks eighth among defensive tackles, according to Spotrac. He can also earn up to $25 million with incentives, and the Chiefs can still use the franchise tag to retain him next year."I think you as reporters and fans kind of misconstrue the contract thing," Jones said, per Teicher. "It is never personal. I don't think I started hating coach (Andy) Reid or I started disliking (general manager Brett) Veach. I love Veach. He knows I love him. We had on and off conversation throughout it all. ... I don't think our relationship was affected any (by) that. They know how much I love this organization."Jones, a cornerstone of the Chiefs' Super Bowl-winning run last season, watched Kansas City's 21-20 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1 from a suite at Arrowhead Stadium."It all felt crazy. It was a different viewpoint. I was biting my nails the whole game," Jones said, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.Jones is coming off a career year in which he racked up 44 tackles, 29 QB hits, and 15.5 sacks in 17 games. The Mississippi State product, who's helped Kansas City win two Super Bowl titles, has racked up 65 sacks in 107 appearances since being drafted in the second round in 2016.In a press conference, the four-time Pro Bowler said he's focused on the current season. He and the Chiefs will begin to negotiate a new deal in 2024. In the meantime, he's expected to make his 2023 debut in Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Chiefs' Kelce returns to practice ahead of Week 2 matchup with Jaguars
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will practice in a limited capacity ahead of the team's Week 2 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The All-Pro tight end missed the club's Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions after hyperextending his knee and sustaining a bone bruise in practice leading up to the season opener.Backup tight ends Noah Gray and Blake Bell combined for five catches, 43 yards, and one touchdown on eight targets in Kelce's absence. The Chiefs would gladly welcome Kelce's return after their struggles at receiver in Week 1. Drops and a lack of separation forced Kansas City into multiple errors in the contest, including Lions rookie Brian Branch scoring a pick-6 on a pass dropped by Kadarius Toney.Kelce has posted seven consecutive seasons with more than 1,000 yards receiving. The soon-to-be 34-year-old hauled in 110 receptions for 1,338 yards and 12 touchdowns last campaign, earning his eighth Pro Bowl nod and fourth first-team All-Pro selection. The Jaguars allowed 59 yards on five receptions to the Indianapolis Colts tight ends in Week 1.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jets' Saleh would be 'shocked' if Rodgers retires after Achilles injury
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday that he hasn't had discussions about Aaron Rodgers' future, but he would be surprised if the four-time NFL MVP retires following his season-ending injury."I haven't gone down that road with him," Saleh said, according to SNY. "I'd be shocked if this is the way he's gonna go out. But at the same time for him, he's working through a whole lot of things that he needs to deal with. That will be the last thing I talk to him about."Rodgers, 39, tore his left Achilles tendon four snaps into his highly anticipated Jets debut on Monday. New York acquired the 10-time Pro Bowler as part of a blockbuster trade from the Green Bay Packers during the offseason after he started 223 games and spent 18 seasons with Green Bay.Rodgers' injury is a big blow to the Jets' 2023 aspirations and leaves the team with Zach Wilson as QB1. Wilson has failed to live up to the hype since being drafted second overall in 2021, but Saleh remains optimistic about the 24-year-old."We believe we have a really good football team," Saleh said. "Like I've said before, we've got a championship defense, we've got great skill guys on offense, got an O-line that is continuing to jell, and we've got a lot of faith in Zach."People forget he was 5-1 before the bye week (in 2022) and before half the offense was decimated with injuries."Wilson didn't play the first three games of last season due to injury. He won four of New York's first five games after returning, but he couldn't hang onto the starting role for the entire season due to more injuries and inconsistent play.Despite boasting a solid defense, the Jets - who started three different quarterbacks in 2022 - lost their final six games of the campaign and missed the playoffs for the 12th straight year.Wilson entered Monday's game after Rodgers went down and completed 14 of 21 pass attempts for 140 yards and one touchdown against one interception, helping the Jets claim a dramatic overtime win against the Buffalo Bills.New York's quarterback depth chart also features Tim Boyle. Saleh said that the club plans to add another passer, but the third-year head coach isn't sure when it'll happen."This isn't Madden. ... Zach and Tim, those are our two guys," Saleh said, according to Dennis Waszak Jr. of The Associated Press. The Jets visit the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bears' Fields vows to be more aggressive after 'conservative' Week 1
After his disappointing performance during Sunday's 38-20 home loss to the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields plans to be more aggressive."I felt like I was a little bit too conservative at times," Fields said Wednesday, according to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic. He added, "Definitely with guys like D.J. (Moore) and Chase (Claypool), if we do have one-on-one on the outside, potentially throwing it up and seeing what happens. ... Want to give them more chances deep down the field."The Fields-led offense entered the 2023 season surrounded by high expectations after the signal-caller broke out as a runner last year. However, Fields passed for only 216 yards (5.8 per attempt) and one touchdown against one interception versus Green Bay. The 24-year-old also suffered a fumble and was sacked four times. The 2021 first-round pick attempted two passes of 20-plus yards and finished the game with an average depth of target of 3.6 yards, which ranked 31st among QBs in Week 1, according to PFF."I'm not sure. I don't know," Fields said when asked why he was so conservative in the season opener.Bears head coach Matt Eberflus wasn't happy with how the Fields-led unit performed either."Rhythm and timing of the passing game is what we're searching for," Eberflus said, according to Kevin Powell of WGN Radio 720.Chicago visits the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 2 teasers: Eagles and Patriots good tease candidates
Placing teasers in Week 1 takes bravery given the uncertainty of the opening week of the NFL season and potentially misplaced spreads. Many of our legs from the Week 1 teaser basket hit, but the challenge is pairing the right ones. While the Commanders, Packers, Jets, and Browns covered, the Steelers and Vikings did not. In order to make -280 teaser legs valuable, you need to win at least 75% of the time. Our Commanders -1 and Steelers +8.5 play was a loser. As we look to Week 2, remember that teasers provide value for bettors by capturing key winning margin numbers: three, six, and seven. It never makes sense to tease a game through zero because you're losing valuable win probability. Games are hardly won by less than a field goal or end in a super-rare tie.Let's use the Patriots (+2.5) matchup against the Dolphins to show the value of teasing a game.Alt. Spread OddsPatriots+3.5-148Patriots +4.5-178Patriots +5.5-196Patriots +6.5-250Patriots +7.5-310Patriots +8.5-350It's evident the dramatic price increases come after crossing the numbers six and seven, which are key numbers in NFL betting. A teaser leg of Patriots +8.5 at -280 offers far greater value than getting the Patriots at an alternate spread of +8.5 at a -350 price. To cash the two-team, six-point teaser, we need to pair Patriots +8.5 with another teaser leg. Our "teaser basket" shows the most valuable teaser legs of the week based on key numbers.Teaser basketTeam Spread Teaser legEagles-7-1Falcons+1.5+7.5Lions-6PKColts+2+849ers-8-2Patriots+2.5+8.5Steelers+2+8This week features a ton of games with spreads hovering around a touchdown or under a field goal. Typically, those are the most valuable games to tease because they cross the key numbers. The Eagles, 49ers, and Lions are expected to win by roughly a touchdown, while the Falcons, Colts, Patriots, and Steelers are projected to be in close games. As we highlighted earlier, there's value in teasing the Patriots. After a disastrous first quarter to start the NFL season, New England rebounded by limiting the Eagles. Mac Jones and the Patriots' offense looked great as the game went on, coming back from a 16-point deficit to create a chance to win in the final seconds. The Dolphins offense looked phenomenal last week, but it'll be a different story against a Bill Belichick defense. This is a great bounce-back spot for the Patriots. We backed the Steelers last week and they looked like they didn't belong on the same field as the 49ers. The Steelers are getting points at home over a Browns team receiving a ton of early-season hype. Although it's a good rebound spot, I'm staying away. Instead, let's look at Philadelphia. The Eagles struggled in the opener despite escaping with a win. Now, they have a short turnaround when they play the Vikings at home on Thursday Night Football.Last weekend, the Vikings lost outright to the Buccaneers and looked discombobulated in the process. Many predicted a regression in Minnesota after a myriad of miraculous one-score wins last season. The Vikings struggle whenever they go to Philly. They've lost three of the last four contests there, including a dominant Eagles win in Week 2 last season. The Eagles have a substantially better roster and are at home, so getting this game down to -1 and only needing an Eagles win for one teaser leg is a smart play. Pair Eagles -1 and Patriots +8.5 for a winning teaser.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. Week 2 survivor picks: Looking to the top of the NFC
It wasn't quite the bloodbath we've seen in Week 1s of years past, but the Buccaneers, Rams and Raiders did most of the damage to survivor entries, likely resulting in around 20% of contestants in your pool being one and done.
NFLPA director calls for grass fields across league
NFLPA executive director Lloyd Howell wants the NFL to switch to grass fields."Moving all stadium fields to high-quality natural grass surfaces is the easiest decision the NFL can make," Howell said Wednesday in a statement, per ESPN's Adam Schefter."The players overwhelmingly prefer it, and the data is clear that grass is simply safer than artificial turf. It is an issue that has been near the top of the players' list during my team visits and one I have raised with the NFL."New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles on Monday night at MetLife Stadium, which uses slit film turf. Rodgers previously voiced a desire for grass fields across the league, and his injury prompted former teammate Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari to call for the NFL to "do better."
Cowboys' Parsons calls Giants 'wrong' for keeping Jones in during blowout
Micah Parsons criticized the New York Giants for keeping quarterback Daniel Jones in the fourth quarter during a blowout."It's called protecting your guy," the Dallas Cowboys edge rusher said on his podcast "The Edge with Micah Parsons."He added: "I don't think Daniel Jones should have been in that game in the fourth quarter. I thought they should have protected him and pulled him out, and barring injury, their season would be over without Daniel Jones."The Cowboys defeated the Giants 40-0 on opening night. A Tony Pollard rushing touchdown all but secured the win, putting them up 26-0 halfway through the second quarter.Giants head coach Brian Daboll kept his quarterback in the game into the fourth quarter before replacing him with backup Tyrod Taylor. Jones was sacked seven times, finishing the game with 104 passing yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions."I do not agree with Daniel Jones staying out there into that last drive," Parsons said.He added: "I thought that was wrong, I thought it was deceiving. That's your franchise quarterback and he's still out there with the backup offensive line still getting sacked and hit. I just didn't understand it."The two clubs face off again in Week 10.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Fantasy: Waiver Wire - Week 2
Find positional rankings, additional analysis, and subscribe to push notifications in the NFL Fantasy News section.Every Monday during the season, theScore's Justin Boone runs down the recommended waiver-wire pickups.Roster percentages are based on Yahoo leagues. Free Agent Budget (FAB) amounts are based on a $100 salary cap. Only players rostered in less than 50% of leagues are considered.Quarterbacks John Fisher / Getty Images Sport / GettyJordan Love, PackersNext UpRosteredFABat ATL31%$1Love had a strong performance in the opener, despite Romeo Doubs being on a snap count and Christian Watson sitting out due to hamstring issues. The 24-year-old passer threw for 245 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another 12 yards on the ground. He'll finish the week as a top-five fantasy quarterback. It's a great start to the post-Aaron Rodgers era in Green Bay and a sign that he could become a regular fantasy option, especially once his receiving corps is back to full health. In a week filled with uninspiring streamers on the waiver wire, Love is worth taking a chance on.Brock Purdy is just above the 50% rostered mark but should be rostered in most leagues.Risky streaming options: Derek Carr at CAR (38% rostered), Baker Mayfield vs. CHI (10% rostered), Mac Jones vs. MIA (8% rostered), Sam Howell at DEN (22% rostered), Ryan Tannehill vs. LAC (7% rostered)Desperation streaming options: Jimmy Garoppolo at BUF (16% rostered), Matthew Stafford vs. SF (29% rostered), Kenny Pickett vs. CLE (37% rostered), C.J. Kelley rushed 16 times for 91 yards and a touchdown, putting him in the mix for a surprising top-12 fantasy result in Week 1.We've since learned Ekeler is dealing with an ankle injury, and his status for this week is unknown, according to head coach Brandon Staley. While a matchup with the Titans' run defense isn't the most favorable, Kelley would be a strong fantasy RB2 if Ekeler were ruled out for any amount of time.Even with Ekeler in the lineup, Kelley proved he can be a weekly flex option behind the Chargers' strong offensive line - making him well worth an add this week.Gus Edwards/Justice Hill, RavensNext UpRosteredFABat CIN20%/3%$9/$7With J.K. Dobbins out for the season due to an Achilles tear, the Ravens plan to roll with their current roster, including Edwards, Hill, and veteran Melvin Gordon. They also have undrafted rookie Keaton Mitchell, who's currently on injured reserve and forced to sit out at least the first four games.Normally, we would be more aggressive in bidding for the backs with a chance to take over as the starter in Edwards and Hill, but there are a lot of potential outcomes here and very few result in a fantasy star.Though Edwards has been the most productive option in recent seasons, he offers very little in the receiving game. He will likely form a committee with the more explosive Hill handling the bulk of the pass-catching duties. It's possible Gordon could also factor in.Fantasy managers shouldn't rule out a move for a new lead back via trade (Jonathan Taylor) or free-agent signing (Leonard Fournette, Kareem Hunt).Securing the starter in Baltimore would be valuable for fantasy and Edwards is our bet to handle the most touches moving forward. However, keep your expectations in check with Edwards capping out as a RB3/flex play with RB2 upside and Hill as a pure flex.Kyren Williams, RamsNext UpRosteredFABvs. SF5%$9One of the most shocking developments from Week 1 was Kyren Williams playing 65% of the Rams' snaps while projected starter Cam Akers handled the other 35%.Even with the Rams in a positive game script, Williams was more productive on the day by turning his 15 touches into 52 yards and two scores. Akers managed an ineffective 29 yards on 22 carries but did add a touchdown of his own. It's also worth noting that most of Akers' touches came late in the game when the Rams had the advantage - making it safe to speculate whether Williams has unseated him as the more valuable backfield option. While we might not know for sure until we see Sean McVay's gameplan against the tough 49ers' run defense this week, fantasy managers should be scooping up Williams as a potential new real-life starter and fantasy RB3/flex play.Kenneth Gainwell, Tyler Allgeier, Jaylen Warren, and Tank Bigsby are close to or above the 50% rostered mark but should be rostered in most leagues.High-upside backups like Tyjae Spears (15% rostered), Roschon Johnson (15% rostered), Sean Tucker (4% rostered), Jerome Ford (9% rostered), Ty Chandler (8% rostered) should be rostered in most leagues.Flex options (if healthy): Zack Moss at HOU (7% rostered)Flex options: Chuba Hubbard vs. NO (15% rostered)Risky flex options (if healthy): Kendre Miller at CAR (16% rostered)Dart-throw flex options: D'Onta Foreman (28% rostered), Salvon Ahmed (1% rostered), Trayveon Williams (0% rostered), Matt Breida (0% rostered), Mike Boone (0% rostered), Rico Dowdle (2% rostered)Other backups to roster: De'Von Achane (47% rostered), Keaontay Ingram (2% rostered), Zamir White (7% rostered), Clyde Edwards-Helaire (18% rostered), Devin Singletary (24% rostered)Deep stashes: Leonard Fournette (4% rostered), Kareem Hunt (11% rostered), Isaiah Spiller (1% rostered), Jordan Mason (0% rostered), Craig Reynolds (0% rostered), Chris Rodriguez Jr. (1% rostered), Emanuel Wilson (0% rostered), Anthony McFarland Jr. (3% rostered), Jake Funk (0% rostered)Injured-reserve stashes: Jeff Wilson (26% rostered)Wide receivers Steph Chambers / Getty Images Sport / GettyPuka Nacua/Tutu Atwell/Van Jefferson, RamsNext UpRosteredFABvs. SF6%/3%/37%$15/$5/$1Matthew Stafford appears to be the healthiest he's been in a couple of seasons and carved up the Seahawks' defense without the help of Cooper Kupp - who remains on IR.Stafford focused in on Nacua (15 targets) and Atwell (eight targets), helping both young wideouts post 119 receiving yards each. Nacua accomplished the feat with 10 receptions, while Atwell did it in six.It was a career day for Atwell, a former second-round pick from 2021 who has failed to make his mark across two NFL seasons. He now has the path to emerge as a WR4/flex in the first month.Nacua is a fifth-round rookie who earned a ton of praise this offseason and now looks like Stafford's favorite target until Kupp returns. He can be considered a WR3/flex option.Meanwhile, Jefferson's stat line was a bit of a letdown in the opener, but he led the receiving corps in snaps and tied for the lead in routes run. The veteran will have better days in the coming weeks, but he's a distant third behind his teammates in terms of waiver wire bidding.Romeo Doubs, PackersNext UpRosteredFABat ATL31%$9After an offseason of reports suggesting Doubs had improved his game and developed strong chemistry with quarterback Jordan Love, the second-year wideout wasted no time making his presence felt in the opener.Despite playing limited snaps due to a preseason hamstring injury, Doubs still caught two touchdowns and helped the Packers to the win. With no timetable for Christian Watson's return to the lineup, Doubs could continue to establish himself as Love's top option in the coming weeks. If he's still available in your league, you should make a strong push to acquire him this week.Nico Collins and Jakobi Meyers are close to or above the 50% rostered mark but should be rostered in most leagues.Risky flex options: Zay Jones vs. KC (30% rostered), Rashee Rice at JAX (36% rostered), Rashid Shaheed at CAR (16% rostered), Darius Slayton at ARI (4% rostered), Kendrick Bourne vs. MIA (2% rostered), Josh Reynolds vs. SEA (1% rostered), Robert Woods vs. IND (4% rostered)Risky flex options (if healthy): Darnell Mooney at TB (38% rostered), DJ Chark vs. NO (14% rostered)Dart-throw flex options: Jonathan Mingo vs. NO (19% rostered), Jayden Reed at ATL (12% rostered), Marvin Mims vs. WAS (36% rostered), Curtis Samuel at DEN (10% rostered), Allen Lazard at DAL (49% rostered), Calvin Austin III vs. CLE (1% rostered), Josh Downs at HOU (1% rostered), Tyler Boyd vs. BAL (44% rostered), K.J. Jaguars' Allen: Matchup against Chiefs is 'personal'
Jacksonville Jaguars outside linebacker Josh Allen is making Sunday's matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs personal."It's a little personal for me because the last two times we played them last year, I wasn't at my best," Allen said Monday, according to the Florida Times-Union's Demetrius Harvey. The Jaguars dropped both of their games against the Chiefs last season, including a 27-20 loss in the AFC divisional round. Jacksonville's pass rush failed to get home against Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who got hit just six times during the playoff contest while playing on an injured ankle."I know he's Patrick Mahomes. ... At the end of the day, I got a job to do, and for me to be where I need to be, I also need to know what I'm doing out there," Allen said, adding that studying film would be pivotal to potential success. The 2019 Pro Bowl pass-rusher is looking to get his hands on the Chiefs star after tallying three tackles and zero quarterback hits in their postseason meeting on Jan. 21.Despite entering just the second week of the season, Allen said the Jaguars would treat their home opener as "a playoff game."The Kentucky product enjoyed a productive start to his 2023 campaign. Allen recorded three sacks, the most in any game during his career, to go along with 10 tackles and three tackles for loss in the opening-week victory over the Indianapolis Colts.Kansas City lost its opener to the Detroit Lions last Thursday.Allen is playing in the final year of his rookie contract after Jacksonville selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2019 draft. He's compiled 195 tackles, 39 TFLs, 30.5 sacks, and 72 quarterback hits in the NFL.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Tarik Cohen to sign with Panthers' practice squad
The Carolina Panthers plan to sign veteran running back Tarik Cohen to their practice squad, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Cohen, 28, has been out of the league since tearing both his ACL and MCL and sustaining a tibial plateau fracture in September 2020.Carolina brought the 5-foot-6, 191-pound halfback in for a workout Tuesday, ESPN's Field Yates reports. The North Carolina A&T product spent four seasons as a member of the Chicago Bears. The dynamic tailback proved to be an asset in both the rushing and passing game for the Bears from 2017-2020.Cohen is nearly five years removed from posting 1,169 scrimmage yards and eight touchdowns in 2018, which led to a first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl nod. He also led the league with 411 punt return yards on 33 returns that season.Carolina currently has Miles Sanders, Chuba Hubbard, and Raheem Blackshear rounding out its depth chart at tailback.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rodgers out for season with torn Achilles
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers will miss the rest of the season due to a torn left Achilles tendon, head coach Robert Saleh announced Tuesday, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.The four-time MVP suffered the injury in Monday night's win over the Buffalo Bills. He was carted off from his Jets debut after a sack during New York's opening drive. Rodgers was placed on injured reserve a day later.Following New York's overtime victory, Saleh said the team will turn to former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson as its starter for the rest of the year. He reiterated his faith in Wilson on Tuesday."I want to make it very clear, Zach's our quarterback," said Saleh, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. "We have a lot of faith in Zach. We're rolling with Zach and excited for him."Tim Boyle, who is on the practice squad, is the Jets' only other quarterback. Saleh said his team will add another passer to its group but emphasized it will be for depth purposes rather than competition for Wilson, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.Wilson struggled in his first two seasons, posting an 8-14 record while throwing for 4,162 yards and 16 touchdowns against 19 interceptions. He completed 14 of his 21 passes for 140 yards with one touchdown and one interception against Buffalo. While the loss of Rodgers may seem fatal to the Jets' chances from the outside, Saleh isn't throwing in the towel."I don't know why people are trying to put an obituary to our team name," he said, according to Cimini.Rodgers didn't like the Jets' play-calls involving cut-blocks and expressed that to coaches, sources told Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.New York tackles performed cut-blocks on two of Rodgers' four drop-backs Thursday night, including the play where he was injured. The Jets made a blockbuster move to acquire the 39-year-old Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers this offseason, setting themselves up to be a Super Bowl contender.New York landed the veteran passer and Green Bay's first- and fifth-round picks in the 2023 draft in exchange for first-, second-, and sixth-round selections in 2023. The Jets also dealt a conditional 2024 second-round choice that would've become a first if Rodgers had played 65% of their snaps this year.Rodgers agreed to a $35-million pay cut after arriving in New York, inking a new two-year contract with $75 million guaranteed through the 2024 season. He spent the first 18 years of his NFL career with the Packers, putting together a Hall of Fame-caliber resume. Rodgers led Green Bay to a Super Bowl win in 2011 and is the team's all-time leader with 475 touchdown passes.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Every Jets fan's worst nightmare came true four snaps into Aaron Rodgers' debut when he went down with a torn Achilles, ending his season before it really started.Twenty-four hours ago, the Jets had the fifth-best odds to win the AFC and seventh-best to win the Super Bowl at +1000 and +1600, respectively. Those have skyrocketed to +2500 and +5000, respectively.New York is now an afterthought with Zach Wilson after being one of the season's most intriguing storylines, all in the blink of an eye. While the Jets are seemingly out of contention, another AFC East team had an impressive Week 1 performance. The Dolphins outlasted the Chargers 36-34 in a fourth-quarter shootout. Miami's offense looked prolific behind a rejuvenated Tua Tagovailoa, who threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns. As a result, he shot up the MVP oddsboard. The Dolphins were rewarded, too. Miami had the sixth-best odds to win the AFC before the season at +1200. The team has now leapfrogged the Jets and Ravens for the fourth-best odds at +800 after Sunday's win.The three AFC favorites - the Chiefs, Bills, and Bengals - all lost their opener. Kansas City's odds remained unchanged. Buffalo is still the second favorite despite its odds lengthening after Josh Allen was stymied by a stout New York defense. Cincinnati moved from +500 to +700 to win the conference after putting forth a poor effort in a blowout loss to the Browns. As for the NFC, the top contenders stand at 1-0. The 49ers' beatdown over the Steelers, despite being only slight road favorites, caught people's eyes. San Francisco's defense rendered Kenny Pickett and the Steelers' offense useless. Brock Purdy also looked poised and fully recovered from offseason elbow surgery.Certain books saw San Francisco jump the Eagles as NFC favorites. It's a small but noteworthy change. The Eagles' Super Bowl odds didn't change, but the 49ers' odds shortened from +900 to +750.Dallas decimated the Giants on Sunday Night Football. It remains to be seen whether that was more of an indication of Dallas' potential or the Giants' looming regression. But the Cowboys went from 14-1 to win the Super Bowl to 11-1.Finally, the Lions knocked off the defending champion Chiefs last Thursday night, which shortened their Super Bowl odds from 22-1 to 16-1.Sam Oshtry is a sports betting writer at theScore. NFL Week 1 betting market report: How bettors perceived all 32 teams
Betting on Week 1 isn't just a one-week process.Lines such as Lions +7, Packers +3, Buccaneers +6.5, and Falcons -2.5 were all available after they were put up in May. However, getting the best price on those teams didn't matter as they won outright and covered all numbers comfortably. Meanwhile, the Steelers (+3) and Commanders (-5.5) didn't cover at all. Those line moves are what change a team's rating. It's important to track how NFL clubs are rated in the betting market for two reasons:
Report: Panthers' Horn out 'multiple weeks' with hamstring injury
Carolina Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn is expected to miss multiple weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.Horn limped off the field late in the second quarter and did not return. He was originally listed as doubtful but was downgraded to out later in the game.Cornerback CJ Henderson served as Horn's primary replacement, as he played in 62% of the snaps in the Panthers' Week 1 loss. Troy Hill also saw increased playing time, as he was on the field for 16 snaps.Horn has struggled to stay healthy since entering the NFL as a first-round pick in 2021. The 23-year-old suffered a broken foot that ended his rookie campaign after just three games. He also battled a chest injury last year that forced him to miss multiple games. The South Carolina product has eight passes defended and four interceptions in 17 career games.Copyright (C) 2023 Score Media Ventures Inc.
