Bills make Johnson top-paid slot CB with 3-year, $31M extension
The Buffalo Bills are signing All-Pro cornerback Taron Johnson to a three-year, $31-million extension, his agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal will make Johnson the highest-paid nickel cornerback in the NFL, adds Schefter. The title had been held by the Colts' Kenny Moore, who returned to Indianapolis on a three-year, $30-million deal Tuesday.Johnson was named a second-team All-Pro for the first time in his career last season. He's produced 335 tackles, 39 pass defenses, four interceptions, and seven sacks in his six seasons since being taken in the fourth round by Buffalo. The Bills' secondary is undergoing a major makeover ahead of the 2024 season with cornerback Tre'Davious White and safety Jordan Poyer released and safety Micah Hyde a free agent.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. 2024 NFL mock draft: Post-free agency edition
The NFL looks a whole lot different than it did this time last week.A busy first wave of free agency, which included one particularly notable draft-related trade, figures to have a significant impact on how the NFL draft shakes out in April.See below for our latest first-round projections.Caleb Williams, QB, USCNow that the Justin Fields question has been answered, you can lock in Williams for the No. 1 slot. The Bears are certainly doing all they can to ease the USC star's transition to the pros by adding Keenan Allen in a trade.Drake Maye, QB, North CarolinaJayden Daniels could be the pick here; it certainly seems like he's getting hype as QB2. But we're not buying it just yet. Maye is the far more complete prospect and should be a slam-dunk selection for the Commanders.MOCK TRADE: Raiders move up from No. 13 in deal with PatriotsJayden Daniels, QB, LSUThe Patriots clearly need a quarterback. But will they take Daniels or opt to move back and get a haul of future first-round picks? Our bet is the latter, and they deal the pick to the Raiders. Antonio Pierce is familiar with the Heisman winner from his time at Arizona State and opts to get aggressive in ensuring Gardner Minshew isn't the only addition to his quarterback room.MOCK TRADE: Vikings move up from No. 11 in deal with CardinalsJ.J. McCarthy, QB, MichiganAnother blockbuster. Landing an extra first-round pick from the Texans last week was a clear sign that the Vikings are plotting a move up for a quarterback. In this scenario, they flip both No. 11 and No. 23 to land McCarthy as the replacement for Kirk Cousins. While Minnesota could aim higher, a deal for No. 4 likely wouldn't require any future first-rounders.Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio StateThe Chargers will rush to the podium to make this pick if Harrison is available at No. 5. After cutting Mike Williams and trading Keenan Allen, there's a clear need at receiver for Jim Harbaugh. The former Michigan coach is very familiar with Harrison's work from their time as rivals in the Big Ten.Malik Nabers, WR, LSUThe Giants should be in the market for a quarterback, but there's no sense in forcing it here with the consensus top four already off the board. A dynamic receiver like Nabers can also help elevate the passing game. The LSU product has superstar potential at the next level.Joe Alt, OT, Notre DameThe Titans took care of their receiver need with the Calvin Ridley signing, so they go with Alt at No. 7. The Notre Dame product stands a whopping 6-foot-8 and will immediately become a cornerstone for Tennessee under new head coach Brian Callahan.Dallas Turner, EDGE, AlabamaThe Falcons took care of their most pressing need with a big-money move for Kirk Cousins in free agency. Darnell Mooney and Rondale Moore also provide a much-needed boost to the receiving corps. That clears the way for Atlanta to zero in on pass-rushers, and Turner is the best in this year's class.Rome Odunze, WR, WashingtonThe Bears almost surely wouldn't expect Odunze to be available at No. 9 - but if he is, they'll jump at the chance to bring him aboard. The Allen trade from the Chargers was a short-term fix to help Williams as a young quarterback, but Odunze provides an excellent long-term option as a top pass-catcher.Brock Bowers, TE, GeorgiaThe Jets have three new starters on the offensive line after signing Tyron Smith and John Simpson and trading for Morgan Moses. That trio of savvy moves will allow New York to turn its attention to the skill positions. Bowers is an elite playmaker at tight end.MOCK TRADE: Pick received from Vikings in deal for No. 4Brian Thomas Jr., WR, LSUArizona plays the draft perfectly, moving back to accumulate picks but still getting a top receiver in Thomas. The LSU standout is a red-zone machine and will give Kyler Murray a much-needed elite talent at receiver after Marquise Brown departed in the offseason.Bo Nix, QB, OregonIdeally, this pick comes after a trade down; perhaps there's a team in the late teens willing to move up for an offensive tackle. But it shouldn't come as a surprise if Nix ends up at No. 12, either. Denver didn't make a move for a quarterback in free agency, and the club doesn't have a second-round pick. Nix could be a solid fit in Sean Payton's offense, even if he's selected earlier than some expect.MOCK TRADE: Pick received from Raiders in deal for No. 3Olumuyiwa Fashanu, OT, Penn StateThe Patriots' rebuild doesn't appear to be one that can be done quickly. That thinking is behind the decision to move out from No. 3 and back to No. 13. That allows them to grab a franchise tackle in Fashanu and address the quarterback issue down the road.Jared Verse, EDGE, Florida StateA receiver would be nice in this spot, but an early run at the position might make that tough. The Saints also have a major need in the pass-rush department. Verse is a supremely athletic edge defender who could help the defense rebound after a frustrating 2023 campaign.Terrion Arnold, CB, AlabamaArnold is an elite corner who would easily be a top-10 pick in a draft not laden with offensive talent. He brings arguably the most well-rounded skill set of any defensive player in the draft and will be a key addition for a team that faces both C.J. Stroud and Trevor Lawrence twice a year.Laiatu Latu, EDGE, UCLAThe Seahawks could go in a number of directions with this pick, but upgrading the pass rush feels like the most ideal scenario. Latu is a polished edge prospect who should have a major impact from Day 1.Cooper DeJean, DB, IowaWe see the offensive line as a major need for the Jags, but keeping Cam Robinson on the roster and extending Ezra Cleveland suggests that the team doesn't necessarily agree. The defensive backfield should also be a priority, and DeJean is an impressive athlete with playmaking traits.Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon StateThe Bengals have a massive hole at right tackle. Fuaga is a borderline top-10 talent who may fit that spot better than any other player in this draft. This is a home-run pick for Cincinnati.Byron Murphy II, DL, TexasFirst, let's make it clear that Murphy isn't Aaron Donald. However, the Texas star is an explosive interior lineman who's a major disruptor in the opposition's passing attack. He won't be able to replace the legendary tackle, but he can at least soften the departure in Los Angeles.Jackson Powers-Johnson, C, OregonThe Steelers doubled down in addressing their most important offseason need, acquiring both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields to overhaul the quarterback room. The next order of business: improving the pass protection up front. Powers-Johnson has Pro Bowl potential at center or guard.Troy Fautanu, OL, WashingtonFautanu is an ideal fit for the track team Mike McDaniel is clearly assembling on offense in Miami. The Washington tackle is as explosive a lineman as there is in the draft, turning in an impressive 5.01 time in the 40-yard dash at the combine.Quinyon Mitchell, CB, ToledoThe Eagles have been busy in free agency, addressing a number of roster needs with Saquon Barkley, Bryce Huff, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Devin White, among others. Landing Mitchell to upgrade the cornerback group could be the final piece for a dream offseason in Philly.MOCK TRADE: Pick received from Vikings in deal for No. 4Nate Wiggins, CB, ClemsonThe trade back by the Cardinals already turned into a receiver at No. 11 and now nets Wiggins at No. 23. The Clemson corner turned heads at the combine with a blazing 4.28 time in the 40-yard dash.Tyler Guyton, OT, OklahomaThe Cowboys have some massive shoes to fill on the offensive line after letting Tyron Smith walk in free agency. Guyton's pass-protection prowess makes him a natural fit at left tackle, and this kind of move would allow Dallas to keep All-Pro guard Tyler Smith on the interior.JC Latham, OT, AlabamaAfter swapping Aaron Jones for Josh Jacobs in the backfield, the Packers grab an absolute beast in the run game. While the massive right tackle has work to do in pass protection, Latham should be a Day 1 starter for the Packers' up-and-coming offense.Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, AlabamaThe Bucs should be in the market for a young cornerback after trading Carlton Davis to the Lions. McKinstry could round out a solid trio alongside Jamel Dean and Christian Izien.Jer'Zhan Newton, DL, IllinoisWith receiver and corner off the board already for the Cardinals in Round 1, the NFC West club grabs the talented defensive tackle out of Illinois. Newton is a disruptive force with excellent pass-rush moves from the interior to collapse the opposition's pocket.Adonai Mitchell, WR, TexasThe Bills are going to have to add a receiver at some point. Gabe Davis left in free agency, and Stefon Diggs' future in Buffalo is seemingly always up in the air. Mitchell is a supremely talented wideout who could quickly outperform his draft position as a top target for Josh Allen.Keon Coleman, WR, Florida StateLightning strikes twice just one year after Brian Branch fell into the Lions' hands due to a poor 40-yard dash time. This year, it's Coleman out of Florida State - a receiver many tabbed as a top-20 pick before a 4.61 run in the 40 slowed that hype. However, don't be fooled by the stopwatch, Coleman's game speed is exceptional and will make a number of teams regret not taking the chance before No. 29.Chop Robinson, EDGE, Penn StateThe Ravens made a huge splash in free agency with the addition of Derrick Henry. While another receiver could be a nice way to round out the offense, perhaps a veteran addition is more likely in that spot. Robinson is an athletic freak who could take Baltimore's pass rush to the next level.Graham Barton, OL, DukeThe 49ers grab the versatile Barton from Duke in a move that could fill a number of roles on the offensive line. He likely projects at center in the professional ranks, but his experience at tackle will be vital for the Super Bowl finalists.Amarius Mims, OT, GeorgiaSigning Marquise Brown in free agency means the Chiefs don't have to force a receiver pick here. Mims is an incredibly talented tackle prospect who would've been drafted much earlier were it not for a relative lack of experience. Filling the left tackle spot with a high-upside pick like this has the potential to be a major steal for the defending champs.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: White scheduled to visit Rams, Raiders
Former Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White has visits scheduled with the Los Angeles Rams and Las Vegas Raiders this week, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.A few other teams have expressed interest in the cover man, Garafolo adds. The Bills released White earlier this week after seven seasons. The 29-year-old has made a pair of Pro Bowls and earned a first-team All-Pro nod in 2019. White is recovering from a torn Achilles that limited him to four games in 2023.Injuries have hindered the LSU product for several seasons. He's played in just 21 games over the last three seasons but has been productive when available. White racked up 311 total tackles, 18 interceptions, and 68 pass deflections in 82 career games. The Rams have already added cornerback Darious Williams this offseason. Ahkello Witherspoon, Cobie Durant, and Derion Kendrick are among L.A.'s other options at cornerback. The Rams' defense ranked No. 20 in passing yards allowed in 2023, surrendering 231.1 per contest.White would be the Raiders' first impact signing for their secondary this offseason. Las Vegas allowed 212.4 passing yards per game in 2023, which ranked No. 12 in the NFL. Nate Hobbs, Jack Jones, and Jakorian Bennett are among the club's top returning corners.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Mike Williams to visit Panthers, Steelers, Jets
Former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams is scheduled to visit the Carolina Panthers, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New York Jets this week, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Chargers are also interested in bringing the 6-foot-4, 218-pounder back after trading Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears, Schefter reports. Williams was released by Los Angeles earlier this week.Williams appeared in just three games in 2023 due to a torn ACL. The 29-year-old owns two 1,000-yard campaigns and led the NFL in yards per reception (20.4) in 2019. He's totaled 309 catches, 4,806 yards, and 31 touchdowns in 88 career contests.Veteran Adam Thielen led the Panthers with 1,014 yards and four touchdowns on 103 receptions in 2023. Jonathan Mingo, a second-round selection in last year's draft, was second among the team's wideouts with 43 catches for 418 yards. The Steelers, meanwhile, sent one of their leading receivers to Carolina earlier this week, trading Diontae Johnson for cornerback Donte Jackson. Johnson trailed George Pickens in both receptions and yards, but both receivers caught five touchdowns apiece. It was reported earlier this week that New York could be interested in Williams but that the team wouldn't get into a "bidding war" to acquire the Clemson product. Garrett Wilson was the only Jets wide receiver to eclipse 320 yards last season. He posted 1,042 yards and a trio of touchdowns on 95 catches. Allen Lazard ranked second among the club's wideouts with 23 receptions for 311 yards and one score.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Patriots signing ex-Viking Osborn
The New England Patriots are signing former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver K.J. Osborn, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport. The deal is for one year and worth $4 million, a source told Albert Breer of MMQB.Osborn has posted at least 540 yards and three touchdowns in each of the last three campaigns. His best season came in 2021 when he hauled in 50 receptions for 655 yards and seven scores. The 26-year-old joins a wide receiver room that was led by Demario Douglas in 2023. Douglas, a sixth-round pick in last year's draft, had 561 yards on 49 receptions but failed to find the end zone.Kendrick Bourne, whom New England signed to a three-year, $33-million extension earlier in March, was on pace to be the team's top wideout. He had 37 catches for 406 yards and four touchdowns in eight games.Osborn will likely compete with Douglas and Bourne for starter snaps.Osborn is the latest weapon to join the Patriots after they added running back Antonio Gibson and tight end Austin Hooper during the opening days of free agency. New England also re-signed tight end Hunter Henry.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Browns signing former Ravens QB Huntley
The Cleveland Browns agreed to terms with former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley, reports Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.Huntley will likely act as Cleveland's third quarterback after Jameis Winston also joined the club in free agency. The 26-year-old signed with Baltimore as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and appeared in 20 games (nine starts) across four seasons. He threw for 1,957 yards and eight touchdowns against seven interceptions, rushed for 509 yards, and earned a Pro Bowl nomination as a replacement in 2022.Cleveland needed to bolster its quarterback room with Deshaun Watson coming off a season-ending shoulder injury and the Indianapolis Colts signing Joe Flacco, who led the Browns to the playoffs after replacing Watson. Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who started three games in 2023, is also on the roster.Head coach Kevin Stefanski said in January he's confident Watson will be "ready to roll" by spring.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cousins 'not going to apologize' for financial success
If the NFL had a Hall of Fame for landing big-money contracts, Kirk Cousins would be a first-ballot inductee.Fresh off signing a four-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons worth a reported $180 million, Cousins shrugged off the notion that people first think of his monetary success over his on-field play."I'm not going to apologize for the fact that it's been a great blessing financially for my family," he said on "The Steam Room" podcast. "But in my years in Atlanta, I certainly want it to be about (how I) won a Super Bowl and (how I) won a lot, and that becomes the last piece of my football career."Cousins added that money has never been the "driving force" of his NFL career, which began with the Washington Commanders (2012-17) and continued with the Minnesota Vikings (2018-2023) before his blockbuster free-agent jump to Atlanta. The veteran passer will have earned around $411 million if he completes his four-year pact with the Falcons, according to Over The Cap.Washington used the franchise tag on Cousins in 2016 and 2017, but the two sides ultimately failed to agree to a long-term deal and the quarterback became a free agent. With a quarterback of his caliber and age rarely hitting free agency, Cousins was able to demand the NFL's first-ever fully guaranteed contract - a three-year, $84-million deal - from Minnesota. He later signed two extensions with the Vikings, both also fully guaranteed.Cousins is coming off a torn Achilles that he suffered in Week 8 but is expected to be ready for training camp.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Steelers acquire Justin Fields in trade with Bears
The Chicago Bears traded quarterback Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick, both teams announced Saturday. The conditional sixth-round pick will turn into a fourth-round selection if Fields plays in at least 51% of the Steelers' snaps this season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports."We have engaged in multiple trade conversations in recent weeks and believe ... (this) is what is best for both Justin and the Bears," Chicago general manager Ryan Poles said in a statement.Fields has been involved in trade rumors since the Bears landed the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Chicago is projected to take a quarterback, with USC's Caleb Williams the top passing prospect available.Fields thanked the city of Chicago, teammates, and the Bears' front office."I can't thank you all enough for what y'all have meant to me over the last three years through the ups and downs. I wish each one of you nothing but success," Fields wrote on social media. "Ready for this next chapter!"The acquisition of Fields is the Steelers' latest effort to remodel their entire quarterback room. The franchise signed veteran Russell Wilson as a free agent and traded former first-round pick Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles after just two seasons. Pittsburgh also released Mitch Trubisky, who started seven games over the last two years, while Mason Rudolph departed as a free agent after leading the Steelers to a 3-0 record down the stretch in 2023.Wilson will be the Steelers' starting quarterback while Fields serves as his backup, a source told ESPN's Brooke Pryor. The 35-year-old welcomed Fields to the team following news of the trade.
Seahawks give Jerome Baker 1-year, $7M deal
The Seattle Seahawks are signing former Miami Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker to a one-year, $7-million contract, his agents confirmed to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Seahawks are retooling their linebacker group after losing Jordyn Brooks to the Dolphins and Bobby Wagner to the Washington Commanders in free agency. Seattle signed former Buffalo Bills linebacker Tyrel Dodson on Thursday.Miami released Baker prior to free agency after six seasons together. The 27-year-old started 82 games for the Dolphins, recording 587 tackles, 31 tackles for loss, 22.5 sacks, and five interceptions. He put up 78 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and two interceptions last season.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Texans, Jets eyed Allen prior to Bears trade
It appears that the Chicago Bears weren't the only suitors interested in acquiring wide receiver Keenan Allen. Both the Houston Texans and New York Jets were involved in trade discussions regarding the six-time Pro Bowler, Allen told reporters Saturday, per The Athletic's Adam Jahns. The Jets' conversations with the Los Angeles Chargers didn't result in a serious trade offer, although Houston was close to landing Allen, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.Chicago ultimately landed the prized wideout, sending a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Chargers on Thursday. The 31-year-old receiver had hoped to conclude his career in a Chargers uniform after spending 11 seasons with the organization. However, the team dealt Allen after he declined its request to restructure his contract earlier this week.Allen says it wasn't an emotional moment when the team requested he take a pay cut."It was, 'I'm not doing it.' I'm not doing it," Allen said, per Jahns. "I just came off my best season, so it's not happening."The 2013 third-round pick recorded 108 receptions, 1,243 yards, and seven touchdowns in 13 games last season. The Chargers have made several moves to create more cap space this offseason, including the release of Allen's fellow ex-L.A. wideout Mike Williams.Allen is now projected to be part of another formidable receiving duo alongside D.J. Moore. In addition to the longtime Charger, the Bears have also added D'Andre Swift and Gerald Everett to their offense in an attempt to improve from their 7-10 record last season.Allen says he "absolutely" wants to stay in Chicago long term, but he's not expecting to sign an extension anytime soon."We're just kind of taking it one day at a time," Allen said, according to ESPN's Courtney Cronin.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eagles acquire Pickett from Steelers
The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired quarterback Kenny Pickett in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced Saturday.Pittsburgh will receive pick No. 98 and two 2025 seventh-rounders, while the Eagles will get Pickett and No. 120, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.The Steelers decided to move Pickett after he poorly handled the arrival of veteran Russell Wilson, sources told Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Wilson officially signed earlier Friday.Pickett has struggled to deliver above-average numbers since being drafted with the No. 20 pick in 2022. He owns a 14-10 record, 4,474 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions through 24 career starts. He was benched last season following a Week 13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The 25-year-old is now expected to back up Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia. The Eagles also have 2023 sixth-rounder Tanner McKee under contract.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Jets to sign All-Pro LT Tyron Smith
The New York Jets continue to revamp their offensive line.New York is expected to sign former Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It's a one-year contract worth up to $20 million with incentives, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Smith confirmed that he's joining the Jets on Friday."I would've loved to have stayed home in Dallas, but as we all know, it's a business the way it works," he told Josina Anderson of CBS Sports. "I still feel like the Jets have an opportunity to win it, and anything I can do for the team to help them out, I'm going to do (my) best to do it."One of his generation's most respected offensive tackles, Smith has eight Pro Bowl berths and five All-Pro nods on his resume, including two first-team selections. He's also a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. Staying healthy has been an issue for the 33-year-old lately, though.Smith hasn't played a full season since 2015. After missing 33 games from 2020-22, he made 13 appearances last season and allowed just one sack in 536 pass-blocking snaps, according to PFF. The USC product, who was drafted ninth overall in 2011, started 161 games across 13 seasons in Dallas.Revamping the O-line was a top priority for the Jets this year after the team struggled in pass- and run-blocking in 2023. New York allowed the fourth-most sacks last season and finished the campaign with the NFL's third-worst offensive line in pass situations, according to PFF.The Jets entered last season with high expectations after they acquired Aaron Rodgers in a blockbuster offseason trade. However, things didn't go as planned, with the star quarterback suffering a season-ending Achilles injury in his debut with the club."I feel like it's going to be amazing," Smith said about playing with Rodgers. "Of course, me being with Dallas, he's kicked our butts twice in the playoffs, so I know what he's capable of."Smith is expected to protect Rodgers' blind side in 2024. Morgan Moses, whom N.Y. acquired in a recent trade from the Baltimore Ravens, will likely play right tackle for the AFC East team. Other projected starters for the Jets' new-look offensive line are right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker, second-year center Joe Tippmann, and left guard John Simpson, who signed a two-year deal with the club earlier in free agency. Queen ready to be 'villain' vs. Ravens after joining Steelers
Patrick Queen recently signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers to remain in the AFC North, and the 24-year-old linebacker said Friday that he can't wait to face the Baltimore Ravens, a place he called home for the last four seasons."It's going to be weird, but I want to be that villain," Queen said about facing Baltimore in 2024. "I want to be that guy. I'm looking to do some stuff to them."Queen had ups and downs on the Ravens, which led to the team declining the fifth-year option on his contract last May. However, the former first-round pick posted his best season with the club in 2023, finishing the campaign with 133 tackles (nine for loss), six pass breakups, 3.5 sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble. He earned a second-team All-Pro berth and his first Pro Bowl nod.The LSU product, who was drafted 28th overall in 2020, joined the other side of one of football's biggest rivalries by signing a three-year, $41-million contract with Pittsburgh on Tuesday in a surprising move."I'm gonna be that guy," Queen added about being a villain. "I hate that I've gotta be that way, but it is what it is. I'm where I want to be. I'm where I'm happy at right now. I'm where I'm wanted."Queen said he's a good fit for a decorated Pittsburgh franchise known for stellar defensive play."Just the organization itself," Queen said about what drew him to the Steelers. "Known for winning, known for great defenses, and it's got a bunch of stars over here. So I just want to come be a part of that. Come be that extra piece to try to win here."The Steelers' defense ranked 21st in yards allowed in 2023 but allowed the sixth-fewest points in the league. That helped the team make the playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons. Pittsburgh, however, lost to the Buffalo Bills in the wild-card round, marking the fourth time the club has gone one-and-done in the postseason since the 2016 campaign.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald announces retirement
Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald announced on Friday that he's retiring from the NFL."For 10 years, I have been fortunate to play the game of football at the highest level," Donald wrote. "I'm thankful for the people I've met along the way, the relationships I've built and the things I've accomplished with my teammates and individually."He added: "Not many people get drafted to a team, win a World Championship with that team and retire with that team. I do not, and will not, take that for granted."
Top 5 moments of Aaron Donald's illustrious career
Aaron Donald, one of the greatest defenders in NFL history, announced his retirement from football after 10 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. The star defensive tackle, who was drafted 13th overall in 2014, established himself as the most dominant lineman of his generation, broke several records, and provided remarkable moments in the league. Here are the best moments of Donald's decorated pro football career:'Aaron Donald's gonna make a play'Donald had more than 100 quarterback pressures and takedowns throughout his career, but none were more important than his hit on Joe Burrow to seal the Rams' 23-20 victory in Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals. Cincy had the ball at Los Angeles' 49-yard line with 0:43 left while trailing by three. Donald then easily beat his blocker en route to helping L.A. stop Burrow and Co. on fourth-and-1, and the Rams claimed their first Super Bowl title in 22 years.

Report: Rams signing Jimmy Garoppolo
The Los Angeles Rams have agreed to terms with veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on a one-year contract, Mike Garafolo and Peter Schrager of NFL Network report. The NFL recently suspended Garoppolo two games for violating the league's PED policy. The 32-year-old spent the 2023 campaign with the Las Vegas Raiders but was recently released after just one year with the team.Las Vegas signed Garoppolo to a three-year contract in 2023, giving him an opportunity to work with then-head coach Josh McDaniels again. However, the Raiders struggled for most of last year and fired McDaniels midway through the campaign. Garoppolo began as QB1 but lost the starting role in the season's second half. He finished the campaign with only seven touchdowns against nine interceptions in seven appearances (six starts).Garoppolo now returns to the NFC West after starting 55 games for the San Francisco 49ers from 2017-22. He was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round in 2014 and traded to San Francisco during the 2017 season. In Los Angeles, Garoppolo will presumably back up Matthew Stafford. The Rams' quarterback depth chart also features Stetson Bennett and Dresser Winn.Garoppolo is 43-20 as a starter throughout his career and has passed for 94 touchdowns to 51 interceptions.Stafford had a solid 2023, but staying healthy has been an issue for the veteran signal-caller. Since playing all 17 games in his first year with L.A. in 2021, the 36-year-old has missed nine games due to injury, including one in 2023. The Rams also rested him in Week 18 last season.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Cowboys release Gallup, Vander Esch
The Dallas Cowboys are releasing wide receiver Michael Gallup and linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, the team announced on Friday.Dallas is cutting Vander Esch with a failed physical designation.Gallup was a contributor on offense for the Cowboys over the past six seasons. The 28-year-old wideout hauled in 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns on 266 catches during his tenure in Dallas. The Cowboys save $9.5 milllion in cap space by moving on from the veteran pass-catcher after he was designated as a post-June 1 cut, per Over the Cap. The team will create $2.1 million in cap room by moving on from Vander Esch.Vander Esch, 28, also spent six seasons in Dallas after being selected in the first round of the 2018 draft. The former Boise State star flourished in his rookie year, racking up 140 tackles and two interceptions on his way to being named a Pro Bowler.Injuries have plagued Vander Esch's career over the past few seasons. He sustained a neck injury during a game against the San Francisco 49ers last October that ultimately ended his 2023 campaign. The Idaho native recorded 469 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and three interceptions during his tenure with the Cowboys.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Wilson grateful to play for Steelers after Broncos tenure
New Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is glad to be in a place where he's wanted."I was fortunate to have several teams call and all that, but this is the place I wanted to be, be a Pittsburgh Steeler and to wear the black and gold," Wilson said in his introductory press conference, according to team reporter Teresa Varley. "It's a true honor, tradition, history. There's six trophies in there and we got to go get a seventh."He added: "Grateful for the opportunity to be able to get after it and do what we came here to do, and that's to win football games."The nine-time Pro Bowler is set to play on the veteran minimum salary of $1.21 million in his debut campaign in Pittsburgh. The Steelers reportedly traded Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles following Friday's press conference. As a result, Wilson is expected to begin his 13th season in the league as Pittsburgh's starter."The reason I wanted to come here is because I wanted to win championships with Coach (Mike) Tomlin and the guys in the locker room," he said, per Varley.Denver officially released Wilson earlier this week, designating him as a post-June 1 cut. The Broncos will absorb a staggering $53 million in dead cap space in 2024 and a $32 million hit in 2025.Wilson's time with the Broncos was greeted with optimism, but he was never able to achieve the high expectations that came with his acquisition from the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. His first season in Denver was underwhelming, as Wilson threw career-worsts in touchdowns (16) and completion rate (60%). He also racked up 11 interceptions. The signal-caller said that playing through a lateral tendon injury contributed to his first-year struggles."Should I have done that? Compete every day. You've got to do what you've got to do.... This past year, I felt like myself again," Wilson said, per The Athletic's Mike DeFabo.Wilson showed notable improvement in his second campaign, throwing 26 touchdowns to 8 interceptions. But his performance wasn't enough to win over head coach Sean Payton, who benched Wilson for the final two games of the regular season. The 35-year-old Wilson has racked up 43,653 yards and 334 touchdowns over 12 NFL campaigns. He's also started 16 postseason contests and led the Seahawks to their Super Bowl XLVIII title.Pittsburgh's been one of the more proactive teams since the start of free agency, having signed Wilson and linebacker Patrick Queen, among other moves.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Sweat restructures deal to stay with Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles and pass-rusher Josh Sweat agreed to terms on a restructured contract that will keep him with the team for the 2024 season, sources told Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Sweat's new deal includes $10 million guaranteed with a chance to reach $13 million with incentives, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.The Eagles were reportedly fielding trade offers for the 26-year-old. Sweat was entering the final campaign of a three-year, $40-million extension he signed in 2021. He had no guaranteed money remaining on his old deal.Philadelphia reportedly permitted edge rusher Haason Reddick to seek a trade due to contract issues. The Eagles signed former New York Jets pass-rusher Bryce Huff to a three-year, $51-million deal earlier this week.Sweat has been with the Eagles since being drafted in the fourth round in 2018. He has blossomed into one of the league's better pass-rushers and had a breakout season in 2022, racking up 11 sacks and 23 quarterback hits. However, the Florida State product's performances took a dip last season. He only totaled 6.5 sacks in 17 contests and failed to record a sack in the final eight regular-season games.Sweat has 82 quarterback hits and 35 sacks in 88 career appearances.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. He was let go following a 6-11 finish in 2023.The 48-year-old also led Tennessee to a 2-3 postseason record during his six seasons.Vrabel was with the team during the combine before being brought on in an official capacity, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. He won Coach of the Year in 2021 after leading the Titans to a 12-5 finish and the AFC's No. 1 seed.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. What the odds say: Are Commanders leaning toward picking Daniels at No. 2?
Find year-round coverage of betting news and insights for all sports by visiting our Betting section and subscribing to push notifications. The NFL offseason is buzzing. Star players are switching teams left and right and the draft is quickly approaching, which will surely pour more gasoline onto the fire. The Bears hold the No. 1 pick and are presumed to take Caleb Williams - he's the -1600 favorite (94.1% implied probability) at theScore Bet to be the first overall selection. However, they have yet to trade Justin Fields, so there's still a chance Chicago deals the coveted top pick. With oddsmakers all but locking in Williams at No. 1, the second overall pick held by the Commanders becomes the more interesting discussion.North Carolina's Drake Maye was long considered the second-best quarterback in the draft. His odds of being picked at No. 2 were as short as -180 in mid-February.However, recent line movement suggests Washington is leaning toward drafting Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. The former LSU Tiger is now the odds-on favorite at -170 (63% implied probability) to be the second overall pick as Maye's odds lengthen to +140.The Commanders' string of offseason moves is likely the reason for the drastic line movement.First, they hired Kliff Kingsbury as their new offensive coordinator. Some believed this was a preemptive move in an attempt to acquire the top pick from the Bears since Kingsbury worked with Williams at USC. But Kingsbury also has a history of working with mobile rookie quarterbacks. He spent four years with Kyler Murray as head coach of the Cardinals.Washington then signed veteran Marcus Mariota, who - as Daniels could become - is a former Heisman winner and second overall pick. Mariota spent last season as the Eagles' backup to Jalen Hurts, another young, mobile quarterback, and would be a suitable mentor for Daniels if the Commanders go that direction. Before the signing of Mariota, Daniels' odds of being selected at No. 2 were -110.Finally, the Commanders traded last year's starter, Sam Howell, to the Seahawks, paving the way for a newcomer to take over under center. Howell was a former college teammate of Maye's, and some believed the two could reunite in Washington.Regardless of what the Commanders decide, oddsmakers don't believe Daniels nor Maye will slip past the quarterback-needy Patriots at No. 3. Maye is even money to be taken third and Daniels is +115, which combines for an implied probability of 96.5%.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Vikings acquire Texans' 1st-rounder in 5-pick trade
The Minnesota Vikings are acquiring the Houston Texans' No. 23 and No. 232 picks in the 2024 NFL Draft in exchange for the No. 42 and No. 188 selections and a 2025 second-round pick, the team announced. The No. 23 pick is the Vikings' second in the first round: They also own the No. 11 pick after they went 7-10 during the 2023 campaign.Minnesota could use their pair of first-rounders to target or trade up for a quarterback after longtime starter Kirk Cousins signed with the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent earlier this week.Houston, meanwhile, no longer owns a pick in the opening round of the 2024 draft. The Texans sent their top pick to the Arizona Cardinals during last year's draft in order to land pass-rusher Will Anderson, the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year. The No. 23 pick originally belonged to the Cleveland Browns but was sent to Houston as a part of the Deshaun Watson trade. The 2024 NFL Draft runs from April 25-27.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Jets to host Clowney, expected to be interested in Mike Williams
The New York Jets are hosting pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney for a free-agent visit next week, according to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic.New York is also expected to explore signing former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams but won't get into a "bidding war" with other teams, Rosenblatt adds. The 31-year-old Clowney met with the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, sources told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.Clowney had an excellent season for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, totaling 43 tackles, 19 quarterback hits, and nine-and-a-half sacks in 17 games. New York is eyeing pass-rush help after Bryce Huff agreed to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles on the first day of the legal tampering period.L.A. released Williams on Wednesday to save $20 million in cap space. He'd spent his entire seven-year career with the Chargers after they selected him seventh overall in the 2017 draft. The Clemson product has been productive when healthy, racking up 4,806 receiving yards and 31 touchdowns in 88 career regular-season games. However, injuries have plagued the 29-year-old in recent years. An ACL tear suffered in Week 3 ended Williams' 2023 season. He also missed five games in the 2022 campaign, including the club's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild-card round. The Jets planned to "aggressively pursue" Williams in 2022 if he hit free agency, per Rosenblatt, but he ultimately signed a three-year extension with the Chargers.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Chiefs adding Marquise Brown
The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing in a high-profile wide receiver as they try to pull off a historic three-peat.Kansas City is signing Marquise Brown to a one-year contract worth up to $11 million, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 26-year-old confirmed the agreement on social media Thursday.Brown spent the last two years with the Arizona Cardinals and saw his contract expire at the end of the 2023 campaign. While playing in a Cardinals offense that didn't have quarterback Kyler Murray for half of the season, Brown posted one of his least productive campaigns with 51 receptions, 574 yards, and four touchdowns in 14 games. Those numbers, however, would've ranked second among Chiefs wide receivers - and third on the team - last year.Brown, who was traded from the Baltimore Ravens to the Cardinals during the 2022 offseason, battled injuries in Arizona and wasn't able to top 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. In 2021, the former first-round pick set career highs with 91 catches and 1,008 yards with Baltimore. The Oklahoma product caught 118 passes for 1,283 yards and seven touchdowns across 26 appearances in two campaigns with the Cardinals. The Chiefs won their second straight Super Bowl - the third of the Patrick Mahomes era - last season despite having issues at wide receiver. Kansas City's pass-catchers had the most dropped passes in the league in 2023. However, tight end Travis Kelce and rookie wideout Rashee Rice stepped up in the playoffs to help Andy Reid's outfit claim another championship. No NFL team has ever lifted the Lombardi Trophy in three straight years.Despite his recent injury history, Brown provides upside and a lot of speed to the Chiefs, owners of one of the NFL's most creative offenses. Kansas City recently released veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, leaving Skyy Moore, Justin Watson, and Kadarius Toney as its other wideout options.Mahomes reacted to Brown joining the team Thursday:
Bears acquire Keenan Allen from Chargers
The Chicago Bears have acquired wide receiver Keenan Allen from the Los Angeles Chargers for a 2024 fourth-round pick, the teams announced Thursday.Allen declined to take a pay cut when asked by the Chargers on Thursday, leading to the trade, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The 31-year-old gives the Bears another quality receiver opposite D.J. Moore, who the team traded for last offseason. Chicago has been loading up on offensive weapons this week, signing former Philadelphia Eagles running back D'Andre Swift to a three-year deal and adding former Chargers tight end Gerald Everett on a two-year contract. The biggest unknown is who'll be Allen's quarterback in Chicago. The Bears hold the No. 1 overall pick and have been linked to USC quarterback Caleb Williams, who's projected to be the top player in the 2024 NFL Draft. However, the team still has former first-round signal-caller Justin Fields on the roster. Fields has been part of trade rumors but has yet to be moved.Allen posted a career-high 108 receptions last season, while his 1,243 receiving yards were his most since 2017.The six-time Pro Bowler's future was one of Los Angeles' biggest questions entering the offseason due to the team's cap crunch. Allen was due $18.1 million in base salary and held a $34.7-million cap hit, per Over the Cap.Veteran wide receiver Mike Williams was also a cap casualty, as he was released on Wednesday. Los Angeles' offense next season will have a new identity without Allen, Williams, Everett, and running back Austin Ekeler, who signed with the Washington Commanders in free agency.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Commanders send Howell to Seahawks
The Washington Commanders are trading quarterback Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks in a deal that involves a pick swap, the teams announced Thursday. The Seahawks will get Howell, a fourth-round pick (No. 102), and a sixth-round selection (No. 179), while the Commanders will receive a third-rounder (No. 78) and a fifth-round pick (No. 152),Howell was Washington's starting quarterback to open last season. The Commanders are in position to select a premier passer with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Seahawks were in the market for another quarterback to add to their roster after Drew Lock signed with the New York Giants in free agency. Geno Smith has been Seattle's full-time starter for the past two seasons.Seattle general manager John Schneider confirmed that Smith would remain the starter, though he expects Howell to make a competitive effort for the job."Geno is the guy, and Sam will be backing him up," Schneider said Thursday on "Seattle Sports 710," according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk. He added, "It's not like we're signing him to go and compete with Geno to be a starter, but I'm sure he's gonna give it a run. He's a competitive guy."Schneider added that Lock's departure was because the Giants "basically sold him on the opportunity to compete to be the starter," according to Dan Duggan of The Athletic.A fifth-round pick in 2022, Howell compiled a 4-13 record as a starter in 2023 with the Commanders. He struggled to protect the football, throwing a league-high 21 interceptions. He ended the campaign with 3,946 yards, 21 touchdowns, 21 picks, and an NFL-leading 65 sacks taken.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Eagles signing Devin White to 1-year deal
The Philadelphia Eagles are signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White to a one-year deal worth up to $7.5 million, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter.White, 26, spent his first five NFL seasons with the Bucs. He had a promising start to his career by earning a second-team All-Pro berth and a Pro Bowl nod over his first three campaigns but has lacked consistency in recent years. The LSU product, who was drafted fifth overall in 2019, recorded 83 tackles (five for loss), six pass breakups, 2.5 sacks, and two interceptions in 14 games in 2023. He's averaged 126 tackles, five pass breakups, and five sacks per 17 games played since entering the NFL.The inside linebacker position is a big need for the Eagles this offseason. Philadelphia also recently signed former New Orleans Saints linebacker Zack Baun to add depth and competition to the second level of its defense.Philly made a pair of splashes and addressed other needs on the first days of free agency by signing pass-rusher Bryce Huff and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson.Meanwhile, White is the first notable Buccaneers free agent not to return to the team this year. Tampa Bay was in danger of missing several starters this offseason but managed to re-sign quarterback Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Mike Evans, and linebacker Lavonte David. He was made a healthy scratch in Week 12 and Week 18. He also missed Week 17 due to an illness.Lazard spent the first five seasons of his career with the Green Bay Packers. He was coming off a career-high 60 receptions and 788 receiving yards when he entered free agency last offseason.Lazard is due a $10-million base salary next season, per Spotrac. The Jets also released wide receiver Corey Davis from the retired list Thursday after he applied to the NFL for reinstatement. Barkley 'super excited' about Eagles culture, fans
Saquon Barkley praised the Philadelphia Eagles culture and what the franchise is building during his introductory press conference with the team on Thursday."When it came to my attention that the Eagles were a team that were interested in me, I definitely got excited about it," Barkley said, according to SNY. " ... From watching from afar, everything that they're about, the culture here, the fans here, definitely got super excited about it, and I'm just happy to be a part of this organization."Barkley signed a three-year contract with Philadelphia in a surprise move on Monday following six seasons with one of the Eagles' biggest rivals, the New York Giants. The star tailback hit free agency after playing 2023 on a one-year contract. New York reportedly didn't offer him a new contract this offseason. The 2018 No. 2 pick has been one of the NFL's premier running backs when healthy. A two-time Pro Bowler, Barkley amassed 7,311 scrimmage yards and 47 total touchdowns in New York. The former Offensive Rookie of the Year topped the 2,000-yard mark during his freshman season in the league but has since battled multiple injuries and played just one full season since 2019.Despite missing three games in 2023, Barkley accounted for 1,242 yards and 10 touchdowns. He expects to have a big impact in Philly, too."I feel like I'm a special player," Barkley said, according to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia. "I feel like I still got a lot left and I got a lot to prove. I just can't wait to get on the field with those guys and prove it and show it to the world."The Eagles began last season with a 10-1 record but weren't able to replicate that success in the final stretch and ultimately fell short against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round."I know everyone is stuck on last year being 11-6 and making it to the first round (of the postseason) and that's a down year," Barkley said, per team reporter Chris McPherson. The Houston Texans reportedly tried to make a trade with the 49ers involving Armstead and Maliek Collins, but the swap fell apart after Houston signed defensive end Danielle Hunter. Cowboys EVP: Prescott's cap hit not impacting free agency
Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones is insisting Dak Prescott's $59.45-million salary cap number is not impeding the club's approach to free agency.Prescott is entering the final season of a four-year, $160-million contract extension signed in 2021. Dallas will be unable to place the franchise tag on their star QB next offseason or trade him due to provisions in his contract.Dallas currently has $2.2 million in available cap space, per Over the Cap."Dak's been willing to work with us," Jones said, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. "We've had good discussions about him and his contract. He's all-in in working with us, and we've had personal discussions with Dak as well. ... Our negotiations with him, we want to keep that private. Won't get into timelines, but certainly a priority of ours."Dallas has been relatively quiet in free agency compared to some of its division rivals. The lack of activity has drawn scrutiny, especially after owner and general manager Jerry Jones said at the scouting combine in February that he anticipated his team being "all-in at the end of this year."The Cowboys were the last team to sign a free agent from another club when they agreed to terms with linebacker Eric Kendricks on Wednesday. Dallas also re-signed cornerback Jourdan Lewis and long snapper Trent Sieg. However, the organization has seen several contributors leave this week, including Tony Pollard, Dorance Armstrong, and Tyler Biadasz."There's a lot to be played out between now and our first game next year. I don't think you win a Super Bowl championship on the first, second, or third day of the league year," Stephen Jones said. The Cowboys finished 12-5 in 2023, but their season came to a disappointing end with a loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round of the playoffs. Jones says he understands the fan base's frustration amid a 28-year Super Bowl drought but assured the club remains committed to winning a championship."We don't define all-in by what you spend in free agency," Jones said.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Star pass-rusher Joey Bosa restructured his contract to remain with the Los Angeles Chargers, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 28-year-old Bosa joins fellow defensive end Khalil Mack in revising their deals to stay in L.A.The four-time Pro Bowler had two years remaining on a five-year, $135-million extension he signed in 2020. Bosa was set to account for a $36.6-million cap number in 2024 prior to reworking his deal, per Over The Cap.He was sidelined by injuries for significant parts of the last two seasons, missing 12 games in 2022 and eight games in 2023.The former Ohio State standout recorded 20 tackles, 6.5 sacks, six tackles for loss, and eight QB hits in nine games during his 2023 campaign.Entering his ninth year in the league, Bosa is two years removed from a Pro Bowl campaign in which he racked up 10.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles. When healthy, the 6-foot-5, 280-pound edge rusher has proven to be a disruptive force. He tallied 40 sacks over his first four pro seasons. The Chargers released wide receiver Mike Williams on Wednesday in a move to get under the salary cap ahead of the new league year. Bosa, Mack, and Keenan Allen, who account for the team's highest cap hits in 2024, were also considered possible candidates to be released or traded ahead of free agency.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cousins, Barkley deals probed for tampering
The NFL is investigating potential tampering by the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons related to the free-agent signings of Saquon Barkley and Kirk Cousins, respectively, a source told The Athletic's Dianna Russini.Such probes are standard league procedure, Russini adds.Cousins and Barkley were among the biggest prizes during the early stages of the free-agency process this week.Barkley landed a three-year, $37.7-million deal with the Eagles during the legal tampering window. The former Penn State product concluded his tenure with the New York Giants after six seasons. The Eagles denied being involved in illegal tampering after allegations surfaced that general manager Howie Roseman personally met with Barkley during the negotiation window, which is not permitted if the player is not representing himself. The Giants didn't contact the league regarding the matter.Cousins signed a four-year, $180-million contract, which includes $100 million guaranteed. The signing marked the end of the four-time Pro Bowler's six-year tenure with the Minnesota Vikings, which dated back to 2018.The 35-year-old admitted that he spoke with the Falcons' athletic trainers Tuesday regarding the progress of Cousins' surgically repaired Achilles tendon, which ended his 2023 campaign in Week 8. Teams can only make contact with a player's agent during the two-day negotiating window, which began at 12 p.m. ET on Monday."There's great people here. And it's not just the football team. I mean, I'm looking at the support staff," Cousins said during his introductory press conference Wednesday. "Meeting, calling, yesterday, calling our head athletic trainer, talking to our head of P.R. I'm thinking, we got good people here."Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Henry: Joining Ravens to play with Lamar 'a no-brainer'
Derrick Henry didn't think twice about signing with the Baltimore Ravens in free agency. The star running back called his decision to join forces with star quarterback Lamar Jackson "a no-brainer" during his introductory presser Thursday, according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic."He's so dynamic. I'm excited to play with him," said Henry. "He had a great year (in 2023), did a lot of great things. I just want to be an added piece to this offseason. I'm trying to focus on coming in and earning the respect of my teammates."Jackson won his second career MVP award last season and remains the NFL's most productive running quarterback.Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta revealed the team attempted to acquire Henry from the Tennessee Titans before last season's trade deadline, per Zrebiec. After missing out, DeCosta said the All-Pro became the team's top free-agent target.
Winners and losers from 1st wave of NFL free agency
The NFL already looks a lot different following the first few days of free agency. While offseason wins don't directly translate to the standings, more than a few teams are positioning themselves nicely for the 2024 campaign. There are also some clubs that have us scratching our heads. Here are the top winners and losers from the first wave of free agency:Winner: Running backs Steph Chambers / Getty Images Sport / GettyThere were questions regarding the state of the running back market heading into free agency. Many rushers were unhappy with how their 2023 offseason unfolded financially, and several high-profile tailbacks were available this offseason. However, NFL teams showed they remain interested in investing in a star running back if the price is right. Several RBs inked lucrative multi-year deals with incentives on the first few days of free agency in 2024. Here's what the contracts look like:RBAgeNew teamOld teamYrsValueGtd.Saquon Barkley27PHINYG3$37.7M$26MDerrick Henry30BALTEN2$16M$9MD'Andre Swift25CHIPHI3$24M$14MJosh Jacobs26GBLV4$48M$12.5MTony Pollard26TENDAL3$24M$10.5MAustin Ekeler28WASLAC2$8.4M$4.2MAaron Jones29MINGB1$7MXDevin Singletary26NYGHOU3$16.5M$9.5MNone of those running backs reset the market, but seeing Super Bowl contenders like the Eagles, Ravens, and Packers wasting no time in getting a star rusher is great news for a position group looking to prove its value. Months ago, Ekeler, Barkley, and Henry, among others, held a meeting to discuss running back contract issues after Barkley, Jacobs, and Pollard were the only franchise-tagged players unable to sign multi-year deals in 2023. Now they're all in new places and seemingly happy with their contracts.Loser: PanthersWhat is Carolina doing? We expected the Panthers to aggressively try to improve the supporting cast around quarterback Bryce Young, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick who struggled as a rookie. However, the Panthers, now led by rookie head coach Dave Canales and first-year GM Dan Morgan, aren't off to an encouraging start this offseason. The Panthers franchise tagged Brian Burns before trading him to the Giants. Not getting a first-round pick in return for a stud pass-rusher at age 25 was a major mistake by a rebuilding Carolina team that doesn't have a 2024 first-round selection. In November 2022, Carolina reportedly rejected a Rams offer for Burns that included two first-round picks and a second-rounder. Burns immediately received a five-year extension from New York worth $150 million, an amount that Canales, Morgan, and Co. opted to invest in ... free-agent guards.Carolina reportedly inked five-year contracts with Robert Hunt (worth $100 million) and Damien Lewis ($53 million). Hunt and Lewis are solid options, but the Panthers didn't have to overpay a pair of guards to fix their O-line issues. The team did get a rare win in its 2024 offseason by acquiring former Steelers receiver Diontae Johnson in exchange for corner Donte Jackson and a late-round pick swap, but Carolina needs a lot more.Winner: TexansGeneral manager Nick Caserio appears inspired to put together a Super Bowl-caliber roster around crown jewel C.J. Stroud. Caserio is spending the early part of free agency wheeling and dealing and is yet to miss. First, he swooped in to acquire former Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon before he would hit the open market. Then, in an even bigger move, he landed premier pass-rusher Danielle Hunter, who recorded a career-high 16.5 sacks last year.Despite losing Jonathan Greenard, the Texans didn't hesitate to swing even harder with Hunter. The rest of the front office's moves were savvy, too. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair reunites with head coach DeMeco Ryans, while defensive lineman Denico Autry is also a great addition after a personal-best 11.5 sacks last season. The Texans are aided by Stroud's rookie contract, and it's clear they don't intend to waste that window.Loser: Justin Fields Justin Casterline / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe bulk of the 2024 NFL quarterback carousel is over, and Justin Fields is still without a date. The Bears quarterback was expected to be one of the most intriguing trade candidates this offseason, but his number of potential suitors may have dwindled down to zero after the opening days of free agency. The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Russell Wilson. The Atlanta Falcons got Kirk Cousins. The Minnesota Vikings signed Sam Darnold. Even the Las Vegas Raiders added Gardner Minshew III.Perhaps Bears general manager Ryan Poles overplayed his hand, or maybe there just wasn't a robust market to begin with. Either way, the chances of Fields going somewhere as a starter are getting lower and lower with each passing day.Winner: Falcons' offenseThe Falcons netted the biggest catch in free agency by inking Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180-million contract. Sure, it's a risk considering Cousins is 35 and coming off of a torn Achilles. But should he return to his usual self, there's the potential for Atlanta to boast an aerial passing attack not seen since Matt Ryan's heyday. No longer will the likes of Drake London and Kyle Pitts be neutralized by the play of their own quarterback. Instead, they'll get Cousins, who was off to one of his best starts last year before injury. Just how confident the Falcons are that Cousins will get back to that level is reflected by their addition of another star wideout in Darnell Mooney. Let's not forget the effects that having a quarterback like Cousins can bring to the running game. Whether you're London, Pitts, Mooney, or Bijan Robinson, Cousins' arrival means the Falcons could put up video-game numbers.Loser: CowboysJerry Jones and Co. know free agency already started, right? After a disappointing wild-card home loss to the Packers, the Cowboys owner said that his team - which has gone one-and-done eight times in the postseason since 1996 - would go "all-in" this season. But Dallas hasn't made any major moves. Meanwhile, Pollard, center Tyler Biadasz, and defensive end Dorance Armstrong signed elsewhere. Offensive tackle Tyron Smith and corner Stephon Gilmore remain unsigned. Plus, Dallas and quarterback Dak Prescott have reportedly had no recent talks regarding an extension.Granted, the Cowboys have a well-rounded roster with star power on both sides of the ball. But not being aggressive early in free agency leaves a Dallas team desperately trying to get over the hump with more questions than answers.Winner: Eagles Ryan Kang / Getty Images Sport / GettyFew teams are making as many splashes while addressing needs as the Eagles. Philadelphia kicked off its free agency by bringing in Barkley - one of football's premier running backs when healthy - on a three-year contract. The team then handed three-year deals to Bryce Huff - a young pass-rusher who broke out in 2023 - and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who's reuniting with Philly after one season in Detroit. Gardner-Johnson led the NFL in interceptions as a member of the Eagles in 2022 and fills a major need in the secondary. The Eagles shouldn't be done yet, though. Their linebacker group still has a big question mark, and other positions, including wide receiver, have depth issues. But the early days of free agency suggest that Howie Roseman is on track to fix his roster after a disappointing 2023 campaign.Loser: BillsSean McDermott once said it's not a matter of if, but when the Bills would win a Super Bowl. Well, after the first days of free agency, Buffalo looks no closer to capturing a Lombardi Trophy. In fact, the franchise appears even farther. While no one was expecting a splash from the Bills, their roster doesn't inspire confidence. The departure of aging stars such as Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde, and Tre'Davious White were somewhat expected, but an awful lot of snaps will need replacing. Dane Jackson and Leonard Flloyd's departures are significant hits, too. The biggest loss, though, was wideout Gabe Davis, who cashed in with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In order to replace those on the way out, the Bills re-signed Cam Lewis, A.J. Epenesa, and Taylor Rapp while also making modest additions such as Mack Hollins and Nicholas Morrow. Will that be enough to keep them in championship contention? With Josh Allen in the picture, the answer will likely always be a yes. However, Buffalo's offseason didn't ease any concerns that this team would be able to get over its playoff hump next season.Winner: Will LevisLevis is going to have a lot of new friends when the Titans' offense takes the field for the first time this offseason. The Titans put their money where their mouth is by providing their second-year quarterback with two weapons and one serious enforcer. The surprise move no one saw coming was swooping in to sign Calvin Ridley to a monster 4-year, $92-million contract. Levis already had one star receiver in DeAndre Hopkins, and he gains another in Ridley. There's no replacing "The King" Derrick Henry, but his departure is alleviated by the addition of running back Tony Pollard to a rotation that already includes Tyjae Spears. And if anyone tries to disrupt Levis' plans to use his new toys, former Broncos center Lloyd Cushenberry - who inked a four-year, $50-million deal - will be ready to throw them out of the club. There were a lot of questions when the Titans elected to move on from head coach Mike Vrabel. But, hiring a offensive-minded coach in Brian Callahan, plus the blockbuster signings of Ridley, Pollard, and Cushenberry, shows they are all-in on making Levis the face of the franchise.Loser: Broncos Candice Ward / Getty Images Sport / GettyRussell Wilson affected Denver's 2024 offseason. The Broncos still owe Wilson $37.8 million after cutting the veteran quarterback, who will be playing in Pittsburgh on a one-year, $1.2-million deal. Wilson's contract left the Broncos with a terrible salary-cap situation, and the result was the team parting ways with other players, including Justin Simmons, an All-Pro safety who became too expensive for the club. Sean Payton's outfit was also reportedly priced out of a potential race for Kirk Cousins, leaving Jarrett Stidham as its top quarterback at the moment. Then there's the Jerry Jeudy trade to the Browns. Denver only received fifth- and sixth-round picks for the wideout, a disappointing return given that Denver reportedly rejected an offer for Jeudy that included a Day 2 pick in October. The Broncos can't really do much other than trust that Payton will reshape and fix the roster. But Denver has more questions than answers after the first wave of free agency.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Lions extend Campbell, Holmes through 2027
The Detroit Lions have agreed to contract extensions with head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes, the club announced Thursday."We are thrilled to have Brad and Dan under contract for the next four seasons," Lions owner Sheila Hamp said in a statement. "They have been the driving force behind the rebuild of our football team and the success that we have enjoyed. The continuity they provide for our football program will continue to be the key to our future success on the field."The pair helped lead the Lions to a 12-5 mark in 2023, tying the franchise's record for wins in a season. Detroit took home its first NFC North division win to make the playoffs for the first time since 2016. The Lions also won their first playoff game since the 1991 campaign in a 24-23 win over the Los Angeles Rams.Detroit went 3-13-1 in Campbell's first season at the helm in 2021 before improving to 9-8 in 2022.Holmes and Co. have drafted Pro Bowlers Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Aidan Hutchinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta, among others, since joining the Lions.Detroit currently holds the No. 29 overall pick in April's draft after falling to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Joe Flacco to join Colts on 1-year deal
The Indianapolis Colts and veteran quarterback Joe Flacco reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth up to $8.7 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The contract reportedly includes $4.5 million in guaranteed money.Flacco joins Indy after a standout five-game stint with the Cleveland Browns last year. The 39-year-old began the 2023 season unsigned and didn't join the AFC North club until late November after a series of injuries sidelined other Browns quarterbacks. Flacco provided Cleveland's offense with a spark, averaging over 300 yards per game and passing for 13 touchdowns while going 4-1 in five regular-season starts. He helped Cleveland and its top-ranked defense reach the playoffs before falling short against the Houston Texans in the wild-card round.Flacco, who was named Super Bowl XLVII MVP as a member of the Baltimore Ravens during the 2012 season, took home the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year award. The Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints also showed interest in signing Flacco before he chose to join Indianapolis, according to Rob Maaddi of The Associated Press. The 2008 first-round pick is expected to join the Colts as a backup behind 2023 first-round passer Anthony Richardson. Gardner Minshew replaced an injured Richardson for most of the last season and recently signed a two-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders. Indianapolis' quarterback depth chart also features Sam Ehlinger.Flacco, who turned 39 in January, is older than Colts head coach Shane Steichen, who will be 39 in May.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eagles deny violating tampering rule with Barkley
The Philadelphia Eagles denied on Wednesday impermissible contact between their general manager, Howie Roseman, and running back Saquon Barkley during the NFL's negotiating window before the start of free agency, according to ESPN's Tim McManus.Barkley, who spent the last six seasons with the New York Giants, agreed to join the Eagles on a three-year, $37.7-million contract on Monday. James Franklin - the tailback's former coach at Penn State - then suggested that Roseman spoke directly to Barkley during the league's legal tampering period. NFL teams aren't allowed to contact players directly in that period unless the player doesn't have an agent and represents himself."For him now to come back and be able to play within the state, in Philadelphia, he said that was one of the first things that Howie said to him on the phone as part of his sales pitch to him was not only the Philadelphia Eagles and that but obviously the connection with Penn State and the fan base as well," Franklin recently said, according to McManus. However, an Eagles spokesperson said that all recruiting done by the team is facilitated through the agent. Free agency officially kicked off on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, and Philly officially announced Barkley minutes later. The New York Giants haven't contacted the NFL, a source told McManus, who added that the league declined to comment on whether it plans to investigate the situation.Barkley, 27, recorded 7,311 scrimmage yards and 47 total touchdowns in 74 appearances with the Giants after being drafted second overall in 2018. He played under a one-year contract in 2023 after being franchise tagged and reportedly didn't receive any contract offers from New York this offseason.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Kendricks spurns 49ers to sign with Cowboys
Free-agent linebacker Eric Kendricks is backing off his initial plan of signing with the San Francisco 49ers and will join the Dallas Cowboys instead, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 32-year-old had a change of heart after reportedly agreeing to join the Niners earlier Wednesday.Kendricks opted to reunite with former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, the Cowboys' new defensive coordinator.Financial details of the contract have yet to be reported.Kendricks spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, finishing second on the team in tackles with 117. He also racked up seven tackles for loss and three-and-a-half sacks in 15 games.Minnesota selected Kendricks in the second round of the 2015 draft. He played eight seasons with the Vikings - securing a first-team All-Pro nomination in 2019 - before landing in L.A.The UCLA product has 1,036 tackles with 18.5 sacks in 132 career games.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Humphries after he was released Wednesday. The move will also put Williams at right tackle, while Paris Johnson Jr. will play left tackle, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. The former first-round pick started 59 games for the Bengals since they selected him 11th overall in 2019.Williams played right tackle last season after the Bengals signed Orlando Brown Jr. in the offseason, but he served on the left side to begin his career.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc.
