Report: Ravens' Harbaugh, Newsome to be questioned in Kaepernick case
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and general manager Ozzie Newsome will be questioned under oath Thursday in relation to free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick's collusion grievance against the NFL, a source told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.Kaepernick is suing the league for his perceived blackballing, itself a response to the former San Francisco 49ers pivot's protests during the national anthem in 2016.The Ravens announced Wednesday they will sign quarterback Robert Griffin III to a one-year contract following a season out of the NFL.Baltimore expressed interest in Kaepernick last offseason after an injury to starter Joe Flacco, but ultimately passed on signing him.The Ravens also had an offer to Griffin turned down because he didn't believe it was a good fit at the time, so Harbaugh and Newsome are likely being questioned to discover why they preferred the 2012 Rookie of the Year over Kaepernick.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rams should've kept chasing a true game-changer in Beckham
The ascendant Rams and Odell Beckham Jr. are a match made in heaven, and right up until Los Angeles stunned the NFL world by trading for Brandin Cooks on Tuesday, they were the favorites to trade for the New York Giants superstar. And they should've kept trying to make a deal for Beckham until it happened or became impossible. Here's why the Rams were too quick to move on.Beckham's clearly more talented than CooksCooks is a good receiver and could be the deep threat that appears to be the only hole in L.A.'s offense, but he's shown time and time again that he isn't a top-tier No. 1 target. The 24-year-old has produced three straight 1,000-yard seasons - an impressive feat - but he established his ceiling on teams with superior quarterback play to the Rams. The New England Patriots threw the ball more than any other team in the league last year, and the New Orleans Saints ranked second in attempts in both 2016 and 2015, according to teamrankings.com.Despite playing in these high-octane passing offenses led by two future Hall of Famers, Cooks' career high in yards is 1,173, and he's never caught more than 84 passes. That's partly because Cooks' main skill is his speed, so he isn't a target magnet, but it's fair to question why both teams were so willing to move on from him.Beckham is inarguably more well-rounded, and was able to average at least 13.5 yards per catch in each of his first three seasons while never catching fewer than 91 passes (and he only played in 12 games as a rookie). Additionally, the Giants ranked 11th, seventh, and eighth in the league in pass attempts per game. The Rams ranked 21st in that category, so Beckham would be more likely than Cooks to maintain his production in their offense.Los Angeles and offensive wizard Sean McVay may help Cooks find another level of production, but chances are he's maxed out as a borderline No. 1 wide receiver.Rams need stars to help fill new stadium, don't care about personality issuesIn two short seasons, the Rams and the Chargers will move into the 80,000-seat, $2.66-billion stadium in Inglewood. The NFL's move back to L.A. hasn't yet been a complete success or an utter disaster, but the middling return is concerning. The apparently imminent resurgence of the Rams should help re-establish them among the City of Stars' sports franchises, but they still lack a superstar who can fill seats and attract nationwide attention.Beckham is one of only a handful of transcendent players in the league - a face and a name that even casual sports fans know. Todd Gurley and Aaron Donald are elite players, and Jared Goff has the potential to reach a new level of stardom, but none come close to Beckham. The Giants wideout had the 11th-highest-selling jersey on NFL Shop last season despite missing most of the campaign. Meanwhile, Gurley was the only Ram to make the top 30 thanks to a career year. In 2016, Beckham was fifth, with Gurley 18th and Goff 40th, according to the NFLPA.Beckham's star power should outweigh any off-field concerns the Rams had about the polarizing pass-catcher, and it's doubtful there were any. While the Giants have grown tired of Beckham's perceived tantrums and outbursts, the Rams made it clear that they believe they can handle all kinds of personalities by bringing in Ndamukong Suh, Marcus Peters, and Aqib Talib - all of whom have a history of off-field issues or being on-field distractions.Assets, contracts, and ease of re-signingThe Rams invested heavily in finding a great receiver, first by swapping cornerback E.J. Gaines and a 2018 second-rounder for Sammy Watkins - only to let him walk in free agency - and now by trading a first-rounder (23rd overall) for Cooks.Given all that effort and all those resources, the future of the position should be secure. But, just like Watkins when he came to the Rams, Cooks has one year remaining before he hits the open market.L.A. apparently understands it can't lose another recently acquired receiver to free agency, as the club reportedly plans to sign Cooks to an extension before the season. However, after seeing Watkins get $16 million per year on the open market, why would Cooks accept a new deal that isn't at least close to that inflated figure?Cooks' more-than-solid production far exceeds that of Watkins, and they have similar playing styles. The Rams could lock down Cooks to a deal worth, for example, $14 million-$15 million annually. But if they're willing to shell out that kind of money for him, it would have been more logical to spend an extra $4 million-$5 million for a generational-type talent like Beckham, who should be more than willing to eschew the open market in favor of the long-term deal he wants. And while it's questionable if Cooks is worth a first-round pick (plus the sixth-round pick of the Rams, who sent a fourth-rounder back to the Patriots), that's a more-than-acceptable price for maybe the best receiver in the game. The Giants are reportedly seeking at least two first-round picks for Beckham, but a team's initial asking price is always high, and at the end of March, ESPN's Adam Schefter said he believed a first- and a third-round pick would be enough to persuade New York to part with him.If Schefter's price point was accurate, that's not much more than L.A. gave up for Cooks, and Beckham's superior talent more than makes up for the difference.(Photo courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Patriots' Edelman alerted police of threat against school
One recent post by Julian Edelman on his Instagram account received an alarming message. The New England Patriots wideout received a direct message late last month, one warning him that someone in his comment section threatened to "shoot up a school."Five weeks after the mass shooting at a school in Parkland, Fla., Edelman chose to take the message seriously and alert someone."With the emotions of what happened, and I have a kid now, I said, 'holy Toledo, what is going on?'" Edelman said to Ken Belson of the New York Times. The message read, "I'm going to shoot my school up watch the news." Edelman relayed the comment to his assistant who called 911.Police traced the message to Port Huron, Mich., and, at the residence, found a 14-year-old boy who confessed to making the threat. Two rifles belonging to his mother were also found in the home. The boy was charged with making a false report of a threat of terrorism and taken to a juvenile-detention center.Edelman said he plans to send a care package to the person who informed him of the threatening message."He's the real hero," Edelman said.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Giants OC looking forward to working with Beckham
As of right now, Odell Beckham Jr. remains property of the New York Giants.Trade rumors continue to swirl, even after the Los Angeles Rams' acquisition of Brandin Cooks, but Beckham is a member of Big Blue for the time being and the Giants' coaching staff is treating him as such."You know, God, he's such an explosive player," new Giants offensive coordinator Mike Shula said Wednesday. "We've watched what everyone else has seen what he can do on the field and I'm really looking forward to being able to work with a guy like that."Shula said he visited with Beckham three days into his new job and the meeting went well. He didn't hide the fact the Giants will build their offense around their most dynamic weapon."I think that he's obviously a vital part of our offense and when you have guys that can make plays and put points on the boards, you want to try to feature them as much as you can," Shula said.As for the rumors, Shula has chosen to turn a blind eye."I kind of learned over the years to try to avoid the swirls and just kind of focus in on the things that I'm responsible for and at the time, I'm responsible for doing that," he said.Beckham is entering the final year of his rookie deal and will reportedly sit out until he receives a new contract with the team.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Could trading Cooks be the 1st step in a grander plan for the Patriots?
There's something brewing in Foxborough. On Tuesday, the New England Patriots traded wide receiver Brandin Cooks to the Los Angeles Rams, acquiring a 2018 first-round pick (No. 23 overall) in the process. On the surface, Bill Belichick and Co. have lost their 2017 leading rusher (Dion Lewis) and two of their top three leading receivers (Cooks and Danny Amendola) this offseason. But something larger may be in the works.Patriots' 2018 draft picksRound 1No. 23 overall (via Rams)Round 1No. 31 overallRound 2No. 43 overall (via 49ers)Round 2No. 63 overallRound 3No. 95 overallRound 6No. 198 overall (via Rams)Round 6No. 210 overall (via Raiders)Round 7No. 219 overall (via Browns)The Patriots own three top-50 selections after the Cooks deal, giving them plenty of ammunition to either move up in the draft's first round or make another blockbuster trade. We don't claim to know Belichick's master plan, but he might be one step ahead of everyone (as per usual), ready to make another huge move.Could that move be the acquisition of Tom Brady's successor?Brady turns 41 years old in August. Despite coming off a season in which he was named the oldest MVP in NFL history, he cannot play forever. While the five-time Super Bowl champion may suit up for another two or three years, Belichick would be unwise to ignore potential long-term solutions.New England doesn't need a quarterback ready to play immediately. It needs a prospect to develop behind Brady. There are plenty of Day 1 options available: from Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield, to the intriguing Lamar Jackson, to the polarizing Josh Allen.Trading up to select one of the draft’s high-profile prospects is not something the Patriots are known for - they prefer trading back to acquire additional picks - but history means nothing if they fall in love with one of this year's top signal-callers.It will not be easy for the Patriots to move into the top 10, or even top 15, of the draft. The Browns, Giants, Jets, Broncos, Bills, Dolphins, and Cardinals all need upgrades at the quarterback position, and all are currently slotted ahead of New England, so Belichick will certainly need to part with multiple assets to make a deal work. But this might have been the plan all along. Acquiring a first- and sixth-rounder via Cooks and collecting a second-round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo could be the initial steps in a grander scheme to maintain a high level of success in New England. The opportunity to select a franchise quarterback doesn't come around very often for a team that drafts as consistently late in the first round as the Patriots, and Belichick would certainly love to add to his legacy post-Brady.But what if the Patriots don't fall in love with any of the top-tier QB prospects? Could they perhaps look to make another blockbuster trade to maximize Brady's few remaining years and compete for a sixth Lombardi Trophy? If so, Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. could be on their radar.New York has reportedly asked for multiple first-round picks for Beckham, something New England now possesses. Pairing the current Giants wideout with Brady, Rob Gronkowski, and Julian Edelman would unquestionably give the Pats one of the NFL's top offenses. It would be easy to question Beckham's fit with the Patriots, but Belichick doesn't shy away from strong personalities (remember Randy Moss?) and could be one of the few coaches in the league who could properly motivate the three-time Pro Bowler. While it is impossible to penetrate the mind of Bill Belichick, one thing is certain: The Patriots have a bold plan for the 2018 season and beyond - they always have a plan - and will not be afraid to execute it. Whether it's player acquisitions or draft-day trades, they will be one of the most interesting teams to monitor this April.(Photos courtesy: Action Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Rams plan to sign Cooks to extension before season
The Los Angeles Rams reportedly don't want to risk losing a star receiver after just one season for the second year in a row.The Rams plan to sign the recently acquired Brandin Cooks to an extension before the start of the 2018 season, a team source told Steve Wyche of NFL Network.Cooks will carry a cap hit of roughly $8.5 million in 2018 and is due to become a free agent at the end of the season. Wyche adds that Cooks is part of the Rams' long-term plan. The Rams acquired receiver Sammy Watkins and a sixth-round pick from the Buffalo Bills last summer in exchange for cornerback E.J. Gaines and a second-round draft choice. He spent just one year in L.A., catching 39 passes for 593 yards and eight touchdowns. Ravens sign Robert Griffin III after year away from NFL
The Baltimore Ravens signed free-agent quarterback Robert Griffin III to a one-year contract, general manager Ozzie Newsome announced Wednesday. Newsome said the two sides agreed to a deal Tuesday and he expects Griffin to be in the facility to sign the contract next week.Griffin didn't play in the NFL during the 2017 season, most recently suiting up for five games with the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 campaign. The 28-year-old was nearly signed by the Ravens last year, and, though they didn't come to an agreement, the team had kept tabs on Griffin since, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. While the former second overall draft pick has started all but two games he's been active for in his career, Griffin is expected to be a backup option behind Joe Flacco.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. I wasn't a guy who really knew the X's and O's of football," Manziel told Dan Patrick on Wednesday, according to Andrew Perloff of Sports Illustrated.Manziel said he didn't understand the pro offense coming out of Texas A&M and there wasn't anyone in the Browns' quarterback room available to help him.Veterans Brian Hoyer and Josh McCown led the team in passing attempts in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Robert Quinn was 'shocked' by trade to Dolphins
Veteran edge rusher Robert Quinn isn't thrilled about being traded abruptly from the Rams - a team he spent seven seasons with - amid their bold 2018 offseason."(I was) pretty much shocked, honestly," Quinn, who was sent to the Dolphins in March, told the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero. "You commit yourself to someone and you have your family turn their back on you."The 2011 first-round pick appears to be holding a grudge against his former club, but he's excited for a fresh start in Miami. Per Salguero, Quinn called the move "a breath of fresh air," adding that he was "suffocating" with the Rams."I'm not a West Coast guy, put it that way," he said. The main reason Quinn has welcomed a move to Miami is the change in defensive scheme. The 27-year-old played outside linebacker in Los Angeles but will move back to defensive end with the Dolphins. He's more comfortable with his hands in the dirt."If you want to get a better get off, you do it in the three-point stance," he said.Quinn accumulated 8.5 sacks last season, his highest total since 2014. Rams tried to trade for Cooks last season
If the Los Angeles Rams had it their way, they would've landed receiver Brandin Cooks a year ago. After acquiring Cooks in a trade with the New England Patriots on Tuesday, Rams GM Les Snead revealed to Peter King of The MMQB that the team targeted the receiver before eventually trading for Sammy Watkins in August."At that time, we didn't have a first-round pick and New England did, and that made all the difference," Snead said. "We discussed (cornerback) Trumaine Johnson with New Orleans, but we could not trump New England's one."The Saints traded Cooks and a fourth-round pick to the Patriots for a first- and third-round selection last March. Jerome Baker: Coach asked at combine what I'd do if he punched me

Baker recounted to Justin Melo of DraftWire.Baker, who racked up 72 tackles for the Buckeyes last season, is expected to hear his name called within the first three rounds of the draft in a few weeks."To me, being from Cleveland, my natural reaction was, 'Coach, no disrespect but if you punch me in the face, we're gonna fight right here.' 3 takeaways from the Brandin Cooks blockbuster
The Los Angeles Rams continued to wheel and deal Tuesday, landing star wide receiver Brandin Cooks from New England Patriots in a blockbuster trade that sent their first-round pick to the reigning AFC champions. There's plenty to digest from the deal, so we've broken it down into three clear takeaways.Rams are the team to beat in the NFCSorry, Philadelphia Eagles fans, but it's hard not to anoint the Rams the preseason favorites in the NFC after an offseason for the ages. It began with the acquisition of star cornerback Marcus Peters from the Kansas City Chiefs almost six weeks ago, and the Rams haven't stopped adding talent to a roster that already featured plenty of it.Rams' blockbuster additions this offseasonPlayerPositionBrandin CooksWRNdamukong SuhDTAqib TalibCBMarcus PetersCBSam ShieldsCBIt remains to be seen whether the new-look Rams will jell - and how quickly they can do it - but on paper, no team in the conference has more talent than the defending NFC West titlists.Rams want Cooks to be what Sammy Watkins wasn'tA year ago, the Rams coughed up a second-round pick to get Sammy Watkins from the Buffalo Bills - only to watch Watkins' production plummet and then let him walk as a free agent. Determined to find a more effective receiver to stretch the field for quarterback Jared Goff, Los Angeles has now traded a first-rounder for a similar player in Cooks.(Photo courtesy: Getty Images)Cooks, like Watkins when he was acquired, is one year away from free agency. Unlike Watkins, Cooks has proven to be extremely durable, playing in all 16 games over each of the last three campaigns. Cooks and Pittsburgh Steelers star Antonio Brown are the only receivers in the NFL to post at least 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in 2015, 2016, and 2017. If he does it for a fourth straight year, that'll be a significant upgrade over the 593 yards and eight touchdowns Watkins registered last season.Patriots will be the most intriguing team at the draftIt's no secret the Patriots need an heir apparent for 40-year-old quarterback Tom Brady, and now they should be able to trade up for one at the draft with four selections in the top 63 at their disposal. Of course, New England could also trade down on draft day - as it's better known for doing - and stockpile additional picks to build roster depth while riding it out with Brady for as long as he wants to play. It's also conceivable that Pats won't trade any of their picks in the opening two rounds, and will instead select players at Nos. 23, 31, 43, and 63. The Patriots have twice drafted multiple players in the first round during the Bill Belichick era; they came away with defensive tackle Vince Wilfork and tight end Ben Watson in 2004, and edge-rusher Chandler Jones plus linebacker Dont'a Hightower in 2012.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. His largest purchase was a 4.09 carat blue diamond ring he bought in 2015 for $8.18 million, which was recently appraised at just $3.75 million.Moradi's attorney, Eric M. Jim Mora attempts to clarify comments about Rosen
Jim Mora has recently made a number of comments about Josh Rosen, whom he coached at UCLA, and he attempted to clarify them on Monday.Last week, Mora said if he were running the Cleveland Browns, USC quarterback Sam Darnold would be the first pick in the draft, and Rosen would be best suited for the New York Giants or Jets. He also said the former UCLA pivot needs to be "challenged intellectually so he doesn't get bored."Mora continued making his rounds through the media with an appearance on NFL Network on Monday.
A.J. Green calls idea of trading Odell Beckham Jr. 'stupid'
Fellow receivers are weighing in on the Odell Beckham Jr. rumors, and it should come as no surprise those who play the same position as Beckham are stunned by the idea he could be traded."That's stupid. That's stupid, man," Cincinnati Bengals star receiver A.J. Green said Sunday at an event in Georgia, according to Edward Lewis of NFL.com.Beckham and the New York Giants are at odds over contract negotiations and the player's behavior off the field. While the Giants insist they aren't shopping their marquee talent, they're reportedly fielding inquiries on him."It's a once-in-a-lifetime, or once-in-a-generation talent, man and you've got to be ready," Green said. And he believes Beckham will ultimately get his money."I think he'll get paid. Ex-NFL RB Pead wants to win Paralympics gold after losing leg
Isaiah Pead's NFL dream was cut short by a serious car accident in 2016 that required him to have his leg amputated, but the former running back is still aiming to prove himself among the world's best athletes.Pead, 28, told TMZ that he's planning to train for the 2020 Paralympics and won't settle for anything less than the top spot."I was talking to my friends and it was like, 'What's your goals?'" Pead said. "If they let me on the track, I'm going for the gold, period."A former 100-meter and 400-meter state champion in high school who played in the NFL from 2012-16, Pead said he's in the early stages of learning how to run with a prosthetic leg, but appears confident that he'll get up to speed in time to make some noise in two years.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Is Josh Allen forcing his way into contention for No. 1 overall pick?
Josh Allen is among the most polarizing quarterbacks in this year's draft. Some around the league are enamored with his rare physical skill set - especially his seemingly turbo-charged arm - while others question his severe lack of polish and poor accuracy.Throughout the draft process, Allen has been mentioned alongside the likes of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Baker Mayfield as the top prospects at the position. It was generally predicted, however, that Darnold and Rosen were the two quarterbacks most likely to be selected by the Cleveland Browns at the No. 1 overall slot prior to the combine. And after Darnold seemingly blew away the Browns at his pro day, garnering special attention from team owner Jimmy Haslam, it appeared the former USC standout was a lock to be Cleveland's next potential savior.Related: AFC exec convinced Browns will take Darnold 1st overallBut, could the Browns actually be using an elaborate smokescreen to hide their desire to take Allen instead?A friend of Browns general manager John Dorsey told the MMQB's Peter King he believes Dorsey intends to select Allen over Darnold at the top of the draft and then target running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 4 overall pick, giving Cleveland its offensive core for potentially the next decade.Furthermore, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added Monday that he too has spoken to someone close to Dorsey about potentially drafting Allen, and they pointed to Dorsey's history of liking big-armed quarterbacks, from Brett Favre to Kansas City Chiefs 2017 first-rounder Patrick Mahomes.Of course, at this stage of the offseason, rumblings should be taken with a grain of salt as teams try to manipulate the narratives to best suit their draft needs.Still, with Tyrod Taylor already named the starter for the 2018 season regardless of which quarterback the Browns select, the raw Allen would have the chance to develop the nuances of the position on the bench before taking over - just as Mahomes did behind Alex Smith last season. Cleveland, therefore, could be willing to take a shot on him if they believe he has a higher upside than Darnold. While Darnold is likely still favorite to land in Cleveland, it appears Allen is gaining momentum with just over three weeks to go until the Browns are officially on the clock.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Patriots hosting former Bills wideout Jordan Matthews
The New England Patriots are reportedly testing out some potential new depth weapons for Tom Brady on Monday, bringing in wide receiver Jordan Matthews and tight end Troy Niklas for workouts, a source told Field Yates of ESPN.Matthews appeared in 10 games for the Buffalo Bills last season, catching 25 passes for 282 yards and one touchdown. However, the 25-year-old racked up nearly 2,700 yards across his first three seasons in the NFL - all with the Philadelphia Eagles - and could provide the Patriots with a more physical option on the outside.Niklas had a career-high 132 yards in 15 games for the Arizona Cardinals during 2017.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Bills 'trying like hell' to trade up for QB
The Buffalo Bills are apparently desperate to find a potential franchise quarterback in this year's draft.Bills general manager Brandon Beane "is trying like hell to get up and get a quarterback," another GM told Jason La Canfora of CBSSports. The anonymous GM added that he's "convinced" Beane will trade up twice from 12th overall if necessary. Buffalo has already moved from 21st overall to 12th by trading left tackle Cordy Glenn to the Cincinnati Bengals.Related: Post-FA NFL Mock Draft: Bills make another trade up for franchise QBThe Bills dealt 2017 starter Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns, leaving them with just free-agent signing AJ McCarron and 2017 fifth-rounder Nathan Peterman as options at the position.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Texans' O'Brien: Instinct will keep Watson healthy after second ACL injury
The Houston Texans aren't worried about sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson after a torn right ACL ended his rookie season prematurely. It was Watson's second major ACL injury; he tore the ligament in his left knee during his freshman year at Clemson.Head coach Bill O'Brien believes Watson has what it takes to protect himself with the heightened risk of reinjury.“He has a really good instinct for maybe gaining the 5 or 6 yards and then going down before he takes the shot,” O’Brien said, according to Sarah Barshop of ESPN. “That’s a big thing that young quarterbacks usually have a problem with. He seems to have an instinct for being able to stay out of harm’s way.”Watson rushed for 269 yards and two touchdowns on 36 attempts over seven games before the injury in a non-contact practice ended his season. The Texans had gone 3-3 over his six starts but finished the season 1-8 after the injury with the tandem of Tom Savage and T.J. Yates under center.O'Brien cited Watson's awareness and compared his physical ability to extend plays to Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck, and Carson Wentz."They’re going to try to keep the play alive and they don’t think it’s ever over. They’re the ultimate competitors," O'Brien said."So, you just have to talk to them, in my opinion, the guys that I’ve dealt with like that, 'Hey look, here’s the deal.' Again, going back to I have a clock in my head, and when this clock reaches a certain point with the protection we’ve called, you better either think about taking off, sliding, throwing it away. You don’t need to take an unnecessary shot, but I don’t think it’s easy to coach that with every single guy.”Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Jim Mora: Josh Rosen 'needs to be challenged intellectually' to be great
Former UCLA head coach Jim Mora took some people by surprise last week when he said he'd take USC quarterback Sam Darnold first overall, rather than Josh Rosen, who he coached for three years before being fired last fall.Mora initially said the decision would be due to scheme fit for the owners of the first pick, the Cleveland Browns, but he offered further explanation Sunday."(Rosen) needs to be challenged intellectually so he doesn’t get bored. He’s a millennial. He wants to know why. Millennials, once they know why, they’re good," Mora said, according to Peter King of SI.com. "Josh has a lot of interests in life. If you can hold his concentration level and focus only on football for a few years, he will set the world on fire. He has so much ability, and he’s a really good kid."Mora believes Rosen would benefit more by being groomed under an experienced veteran, but he possesses all the skills and intangibles to be the franchise quarterback teams seek at the top of the draft."Josh, I think, without a doubt, is the number one quarterback in the draft. He’s a franchise-changer. He’s got the ability to have an immediate impact. His arm talent, intelligence, and his ability to see the game and diagnose the game is rare. He’d come to the sidelines after a play and it was uncanny - he could right away say exactly why he made every decision," said Mora.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Jets GM unfazed by previous quarterback draft whiffs
New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan isn't letting the slow developments of quarterbacks Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg bother him ahead of a draft in which he's already traded up to acquire the No. 3 overall pick."It doesn't faze me," Maccagnan said, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. "It's the college draft. (There are) guys you'll hit on and guys who don't pan out. That's part of the process. We feel pretty confident with this year's group and where we're situated."Petty was selected 103rd overall in the 2015 draft and has attempted a total of 245 passes while appearing in just 10 games. He's thrown four touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Hackenberg was taken 51st in the 2016 draft and has yet to appear in a regular season game.Maccagnan has put the Jets in a significantly better situation to find a franchise quarterback this year, landing the No. 3 pick from the Indianapolis Colts last month in exchange for the No. 6 selection, two second-round picks in this year's draft, and another second-rounder in 2019.The trade is believed to have set the Jets up to take one of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, and Baker Mayfield. However, Maccagnan hasn't made a strong indication of his preference, with both the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants expected to choose quarterbacks with the first two picks."We do think there are some very good quarterback prospects in this class," Maccagnan said. "They all have different strengths and maybe some different areas of concern or weakness. That's one of the reasons why I've been to all these pro days, because there are some real viable guys there that you think may be good additions if they fall to us in the right spot."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Post-FA NFL Mock Draft: Bills make another trade up for franchise QB
Every month of the 2017 season, theScore's Dane Belbeck and Mitch Sanderson project the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. With the NFL Free Agency virtually in the books, their latest prediction includes current info on this year's prospects and a few projected trades.1. Cleveland Browns - Sam Darnold, QB, USCReactions from Darnold's pro day were unanimously in favor of Cleveland taking the USC quarterback with the first overall pick. He checks all the boxes for the Browns, who are essentially forced to take a quarterback first following the Jets' trade up. - Sanderson2. New York Giants - Josh Rosen, QB, UCLAThe Giants seem content to let Eli Manning keep the starting job in New York, but they have to take advantage of holding the second pick in a quarterback-heavy draft. Rosen has shown he's ready for the bright lights of the big city and will give New York plenty to be excited about. - Belbeck3. New York Jets (via Colts) - Josh Allen, QB, WyomingThe Jets aren't fooling anybody by trading up with the Colts; they're taking a quarterback. The 6-foot-5 Allen has some mechanical issues to work out, but wouldn't be forced to start right away in New York with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater on the roster. - Sanderson4. Cleveland Browns (via Texans) - Saquon Barkley, RB, Penn StateThe Browns may not have won a game last year, but with Darnold and Barkley on board, there's plenty to like. Whether the Browns offer much improvement next year remains to be seen, but with the Penn State star on the field, they certainly won't be boring. - Belbeck5. Denver Broncos - Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. StateThe Broncos need to reinforce the defense that led them to a Super Bowl and they can't have enough good pass-rushers. Chubb might be the best defensive player in the draft. - Sanderson6. Indianapolis Colts (via Jets) - Quenton Nelson, G, Notre DameTaking a guard with the sixth pick may not be the sexiest move in the world, but Nelson is an absolute beast who is worthy of this high selection. The Notre Dame star will immediately anchor the Colts' offensive line that will be tasked with keeping Andrew Luck upright as he returns from injury. - Belbeck7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Minkah Fitzpatrick, DB, AlabamaThe Buccaneers' secondary needs some help at cornerback and safety. Fitzpatrick is the most versatile defensive back available who can step in at safety and slot corner from Day 1. - Sanderson8. Chicago Bears - Denzel Ward, CB, Ohio StateA division featuring Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, and Kirk Cousins requires an elite-level secondary, and Ward immediately becomes a lockdown corner for the Bears. Chicago registered just 12 interceptions last year, and with the Ohio State star on board, that number is bound to rise. - Belbeck9. TRADE: Buffalo Bills (via 49ers and Bengals) - Baker Mayfield, QB. OklahomaIn the first projected trade of this mock, the Bills make another move up from the 12th pick to jump past the Dolphins and get their new franchise quarterback by swapping with the 49ers. Mayfield may not be their first-choice passer, but he'll be well worth the high pick if he can transfer his entertaining style to the big leagues.- Sanderson10. Oakland Raiders - Roquan Smith, LB, GeorgiaSmith gives the Raiders a defensive general that will likely be an opening-day starter. His tape at Georgia shows one of the best linebacker prospects in recent memory, something the 20th-ranked Raiders defense desperately needs. - Belbeck11. Miami Dolphins - Vita Vea, DT, WashingtonCam Wake, Robert Quinn, and Andre Branch make up an above-average group of pass-rushers in Miami, but the interior defensive line's strength doesn't match up. Vea is the best defensive tackle in this class, drawing comparisons to All-Pro nose tackle Haloti Ngata. - Sanderson12. TRADE: San Francisco 49ers (via Bills & Bengals) - Derwin James, S, Florida StateDespite moving out of the top 10 with a trade, the 49ers still land a premier talent in James. The Florida State star is arguably the best defensive playmaker in the draft, and will give Kyle Shanahan his leader on that side of the football for the foreseeable future. - Belbeck13. Washington Redskins - Marcus Davenport, OLB, UTSAThe Redskins have done well in the past few drafts using the expertise of Scot McCloughan, but after the former GM left the club last year, it's tough to know what their strategy will be. However, it is easy to see their pass rush is aging and Davenport's high upside is as desirable to Washington as anyone. - Sanderson14. Green Bay Packers - Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia TechEdmunds is one of the most athletic players in the draft, regardless of position. While his instincts at linebacker may not be elite, his ridiculous athleticism makes up for it and gives new Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine a dangerous weapon at his disposal. - Belbeck15. Arizona Cardinals - Connor Williams, OT, TexasPossibly a trade-down candidate, the Cardinals have plenty of holes to fill while trying to remain competitive. It takes time to build a good offensive line, so they may as well start early with Williams, and work toward filling all their needs as the draft progresses. - Sanderson16. Baltimore Ravens - Calvin Ridley, WR, AlabamaThe league's 29th-ranked passing attack desperately needs some talent at wideout, and Ridley is arguably the top receiver in the draft. The Alabama standout showed he can dominate games at the highest level in college, and will be called on often in the Ravens' offense. - Belbeck17. Los Angeles Chargers - Da'Ron Payne, DT, AlabamaThe Chargers are solid across the board. Their edge rushers have been superb, but the middle of the defensive line is getting too old to keep up. Payne is an ideal fit to play nose for Los Angeles and suck up blockers to make room for Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. - Sanderson18. Seattle Seahawks - Mike Hughes, CB, Central FloridaWith Richard Sherman gone, the Seahawks grab some cornerback depth with the athletic UCF star. Hughes is an athletic freak that was among the most impressive performers at the combine, and should carry on the Legion of Boom tradition in Seattle. - Belbeck19. Dallas Cowboys - Courtland Sutton, WR, SMUThe Cowboys are gluttons for drama and love to make splashy picks early in the draft. With rumors of Dez Bryant's release swirling, adding Sutton just fits Dallas. He's a risky pick, but has more upside than any receiver in the draft, with ideal size and strength. - Sanderson20. Detroit Lions - Josh Jackson, CB, IowaDetroit will opt for the best available talent at the 20th slot and grab the Iowa cornerback. The rangy Jackson will give the Lions' impressive secondary another weapon to deal with Rodgers and Cousins in the pass-happy NFC North. - Belbeck21. TRADE: Los Angeles Rams (via Bengals & Bills)- Harold Landry, DE, Boston CollegeIn the second projected trade, the Rams swap with the Bengals to move up from No. 23 to ensure they get the final piece to their puzzle on the defensive line. With Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh in the middle, Landry will have a wonderful transition to the NFL as the Rams' new primary edge rusher. - Sanderson22. Buffalo Bills (via Chiefs) - Rashaan Evans, LB, AlabamaThe athletic Alabama linebacker reads the game as well as anybody and would be an ideal fit for Sean McDermott's defense in Buffalo. The Bills' offense requires serious help, but if Evans is available at No. 22, it will be tough to pass. - Belbeck23. TRADE: Cincinnati Bengals (via Rams, & Bills) - Mike McGlinchey, OT, Notre DameThe Bengals move back twice in the first round and still get to address their top need with a worthy first-rounder while acquiring picks to improve in other areas. McGlinchey has been characterized as another on-field coach who can play either left or right tackle. - Sanderson24. Carolina Panthers - Isaiah Wynn, G, GeorgiaWynn is a natural fit for the Panthers' offensive line after Andrew Norwell left for Jacksonville in the offseason. The Georgia standout played some tackle in college but will be a guard at the next level. A technically sound blocker to help Christian McCaffrey in the running game is a wise move here. - Belbeck25. Tennessee Titans - Arden Key, OLB, LSUThe Titans managed to put together a decent pass rush by committee in 2017, but no one stepped up as the go-to edge rusher. Key has the athletic ability to be an elite pass-rusher in the NFL, but his focus and dedication have been called into question. - Sanderson26. Atlanta Falcons - Maurice Hurst, DT, MichiganAfter losing Dontari Poe in free agency, the Falcons take his replacement with the Michigan standout at No. 26. After a heart condition kept him out of the combine, Hurst has been cleared for action. The super-athlete should pair well with Grady Jarrett to terrorize opponents' offensive lines. - Belbeck27. New Orleans Saints - Lamar Jackson, QB, LouisvilleThe Saints have yet to make an honest effort to find 39-year-old Drew Brees' successor. However, they seem to be more vocal about adding Jackson than any other passer during Brees' tenure. The ultra-athletic Jackson could prove to be the Saints' best-ever pick if he's awarded a few years to learn (a la Aaron Rodgers) before being paired with Sean Payton. - Sanderson28. Pittsburgh Steelers - Jaire Alexander, CB, LouisvilleThe Steelers ranked 22nd in yards allowed per passing attempt last season, a stat they will address with the addition of Alexander. The Louisville standout is among the better athletes at the position, and should give the Steelers a much-needed playmaker in the back end. - Belbeck29. Jacksonville Jaguars - Will Hernandez, G, UTEPThe Jaguars gave Leonard Fournette some help by signing Andrew Norwell, the top guard on the free-agent market, and can continue to improve their top-ranked rushing attack by drafting Hernandez. The UTEP product is one of the strongest and toughest players in the draft. - Sanderson30. Minnesota Vikings - Billy Price, C, Ohio StateThe Vikings already have Pat Elflein at center from last year's draft, but won't hesitate to grab his former college teammate Price. The duo gave Ohio State one of the country's best interior lines in 2016, and with Price moving to guard, they will do so yet again with the Vikings. - Belbeck31. New England Patriots - Kolton Miller, OT, UCLAThe Patriots lost left tackle Nate Solder in free agency and need to do something to make sure Tom Brady is as protected as possible. Miller may be a bit of a reach considering the names still available, but he's the best tackle on the board and impressed at the combine with his athleticism - something Solder excelled at too. - Sanderson32. Philadelphia Eagles - Isaiah Oliver, CB, ColoradoThe defending champions hold as deep a roster as any team in the league, allowing them to simply take the best available talent at the end of the opening round. That is Colorado cornerback Isaiah Oliver, a young man who will instantly give one of the league's best secondaries another weapon. - Belbeck(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Former NFL QB Todd Marinovich back in jail
Former USC and NFL quarterback Todd Marinovich is back in jail in Orange County after being arrested last week.Arrest records obtained by Shad Powers of The Desert Sun show that Marinovich was arrested on March 19 and subsequently released after posting bail, before being arrested again on March 23.While no details of the arrest have been released, the 48-year-old was in the middle of a two-year probation sentence handed out last year after being found naked in a stranger's backyard with drugs and syringes.Marinovich was sentenced to 90 days in custody after the incident but could avoid jail time if he went through a successful rehab and avoided legal trouble for 36 months. He's scheduled to be released from jail on May 3.Marinovich was a star at USC and was taken 24th overall in the 1991 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Raiders. Lamar Jackson may be making a strong case that prospective NFL draft picks don't need an agent.Jackson's stock for the 2018 draft, taking place later this month, continues to trend upward, according to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo! Sports. The Louisville product declined to hire an agent and is apparently being represented by his mother. Reports surfaced this past week that teams were having a difficult time setting up meetings, interviews, and even dinner with Jackson. The 2016 Heisman Trophy winner was reportedly asked to work out as a wide receiver at the NFL combine, something he refuted, but he still skipped out on running the 40-yard dash at the combine and Lousiville's pro day.Related: Jackson declines to run 40 at pro day: 'Game speed is going to tell it all'Jackson is widely regarded to be outside this year's top group of quarterbacks consisting of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, and Baker Mayfield, as questions surround how he would fit into a conventional scheme. He threw for 3,660 yards and 27 touchdowns while completing 59.1 percent of his 430 pass attempts this season. NFL's concussion settlement 'broken,' more than 200 claims denied
Roughly a year after the NFL agreed to an estimated $1-billion settlement in a concussion lawsuit filed by former players, the system is already failing some of those involved."The settlement is broken" and "on the brink of collapse," attorney Peter Shahriari wrote in a court document, according to Bob Hohler of the Boston Globe.A total of 214 claims related to brain damage have been outright denied by the league, while only 156 of the 1,731 retired players who submitted claims had received payments as of March 26.Overall, 350 former players made claims that were initially approved for about $380 million total in payments, but thanks to various delays - including appeals by the NFL - almost 200 of those players haven't been paid. Players filing claims for diagnoses of dementia appear to be experiencing the most significant delays.Shahriari, one of more than 15 lawyers who's part of the case, says the NFL is trying to evade compensating players through "a campaign to hide the truth about the dangers of the game," and by calling former players and their doctors fraudulent.NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league is adhering to the rules approved by the court. An independent law firm is administering the settlement.Lawyers representing the players say the league is exercising too much influence over the process."One year into implementation, the NFL has turned the settlement into a secret, privately litigated claim system that involves changing standards for claim packages, inconsistent and often improper standards of review, a black hole of audits, alleged deficiencies, anonymous opinions, denials, appeals, remands, and technical squabbles over what a valid diagnosis might be," wrote attorney Gene Locks - the head of Locks Law Firm, which represents more than 1,000 former players in the case.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Belichick frustrated with Gronkowski despite expected return
Although New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is reportedly expected to return to his club for the 2018 season after considering retirement, a new report says things have been tense between the 28-year-old and his head coach. There has been friction between Gronkowski and Bill Belichick, along with other members of the Patriots this offseason, as the head coach is questioning whether his tight end is "all in" with the team, sources told ESPN's Jeff Darlington.Gronkowski reportedly cited the large physical and mental toll of playing the position and role the Patriots have him in as reasons for retirement consideration. Coming back to the team, Gronkowski is aware he will be expected to fill the same role.Darlington adds that the tension could ease throughout the offseason if Belichick feels Gronkowski is showing a commitment to football. One caveat to the report is that Gronkowski is "pretty certain" he will return for his ninth season as long as Tom Brady is also back, which is expected to be the case.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc.
