Jets CEO: Restricting player expression 'a fantastically bad idea'
Apparently, not every NFL executive thinks the same as Houston Texans owner Bob McNair when it comes to player activism.New York Jets CEO Christopher Johnson, the team's acting owner while brother Woody acts as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, didn't mince his words Sunday when asked about the NFL potentially implementing a rule to restrict players from expressing their social or political views."I can't speak to how other people run their teams, but I just think that trying to forcibly get the players to shut up is a fantastically bad idea," Johnson said, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.McNair said he wasn't in favor of player activism after defending Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, who is under investigation for workplace misconduct, including sexually harassing female employees"Our playing field, that's not the place for political statements, not the place for religious statements," McNair said.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Pass interference rule change unlikely after committee votes against proposal
Joe Flacco can breathe a big sigh of relief.Just days after NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent said a potential rule change for pass interference penalties "had some momentum," it appears the proposal is headed for failure.New York Giants co-owner and competition committee member John Mara said he supported the change but added not enough of his colleagues felt the same way."I don't think anything will happen on that," Mara said, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert. "I happen to be in the minority. I prefer the 15-yard penalty, but most people prefer (the current rule)."Stephen Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, who is also on the competition committee, told The Washington Post that the proposal was voted down 6-2.The NFL requires at least 24 team owners to sign off on a proposed rule change, so it's unlikely to get enough support after the competition committee's decision. The proposal, which originated from the New York Jets, would make all defensive pass interference fouls a 15-yard penalty unless the contact is "intentional and egregious," which would instead be a spot foul.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jets rescind offer to Ndamukong Suh
Ndamukong Suh won't be joining the New York Jets after all.In a surprising reveal, Jets CEO and acting owner Christopher Johnson confirmed the team has rescinded a contract offer to the defensive tackle, adding Suh wasn't "in keeping with our long-term plan," according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan reportedly didn't get permission from Johnson before presenting Suh a "pretty big" offer. Johnson stepped in after the contract proposal was made and spoke to Maccagnan, opting to go in a different direction."It became apparent to the two of us that this just didn't work," Johnson said. "I don't want to be a flash in the pan. I don't want to load up on people who can get you there, but can't keep you there. This is about building something great long term."The Jets emerged as a contender for Suh in large part due to their cap space. In comparison to the Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles Rams, and New Orleans Saints - three other teams in the mix for Suh - the Jets had the second most money to dangle in front of the five-time Pro Bowler. Jets head coach Todd Bowles also spoke with Suh about how the team could incorporate him in its defense. The 31-year-old will now, ostensibly, decide between the Rams, Saints, and Titans. Of the three teams, Suh said he's "intrigued" by the thought of joining the Rams, who appear to be the most logical fit. Despite playing on a poor Miami Dolphins team, Suh is still a valuable and effective presence, ranking as Pro Football Focus' fifth-best defensive tackle in 2017.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Texans owner defends Jerry Richardson over reported inappropriate behavior
Houston Texans owner Bob McNair has been mostly out of the public eye since comparing player activism to "inmates running the prison" in October, but he's broken his silence to defend Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, who's selling his after revelations about his workplace misconduct came to light."I think his regret is that he didn't fight things as they came out," McNair said, alluding to the reported out-of-court settlements Richardson struck with alleged victims, according to Jarrett Bell of USA TODAY Sports. He added, "Some of the comments could have been made jokingly. I'm sure he didn't mean to offend anybody."McNair also called Richardson "a great owner." Richardson is reportedly accused of sexual harassment against female employees and using a racial slur toward a team scout. The 81-year-old announced his decision to sell the franchise shortly after the story of his misconduct broke. The bidding for the Panthers is reportedly set to surpass $2.5 billion.McNair also took time to emphasize his unhappiness with player activism."Our playing field, that's not the place for political statements, not the place for religious statements," McNair said.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eagles' Jenkins: Eric Reid's activism played role in lack of offers
Philadelphia Eagles veteran Malcolm Jenkins and free agent Eric Reid are two of the NFL's most socially active players, but the fellow safeties haven't always seen eye to eye.The two co-founded the Players Coalition along with retired receiver Anquan Boldin, but Reid left the group just before an accord was struck with the NFL in October that would contribute nearly $90 million to causes considered important to African-American communities, citing differences in opinion between him and Jenkins. The 26-year-old Reid - who was the first player to protest during the national anthem alongside Colin Kaepernick - has yet to sign this offseason despite stating he won't kneel next season.Jenkins doesn't think it's a coincidence."Absolutely. It would be hard to say that he's not getting any calls just on talent alone," Jenkins told ESPN's Tim McManus. "I think any team that is considering him is going to weigh his political views and the strong stance that he's taken the last couple years, and that's unfortunate, but it's just kind of what it is."So hopefully, teams will look past that and evaluate him as a player, and I think as a player he deserves a spot in this league. But I'd be kidding myself if I said that his stance isn't playing a role in him not having a call yet."The free-agent safety market was slow to develop, with top players like Morgan Burnett waiting over a week to sign and inking deals much smaller than anticipated. However, most of the notable free-agent safeties have now found new homes, while Reid has yet to have a reported team visit.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Giants owner Mara: 'I'm tired of answering questions about Odell's behavior'
In New York Giants co-owner John Mara's first public comments about a viral video featuring star receiver Odell Beckham, Mara suggested the player's off-field conduct isn't helping his cause as he seeks a lucrative, long-term deal.In early March, a video surfaced showing Beckham in a bed sitting next to a woman. The object he was holding was unidentifiable, but the woman appeared to be holding a credit card with a white substance on it.Mara was asked Sunday for his reaction to the video and its potential effect on a long-term deal with the Giants."I guess my response to that is I'm tired of answering questions about Odell's behavior," Mara said, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. "He knows what's expected of him and now it's up to him."Asked if it was possible Beckham would be a member of another team in 2018, Mara seemed reticent to lock himself into any guarantees about his star player's future."I can't answer that one way or the other," Mara said, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert. "We're certainly not shopping him. Again, when you're coming off a season when you're 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn't say that anyone is untouchable."Beckham is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is due to command a massive deal. Research group seeks NFLers to participate in CTE study
A research group believes it's on the way to a discovery that will help identify chronic traumatic encephalopathy in living people, and it's enlisting the aid of NFL players.Exosome Sciences hopes to discover biomarkers that will help confirm the presence of CTE in living patients, according to Kent Somers of AZCentral.com. The disease can currently only be diagnosed at autopsy. The group is asking former and current NFLers to donate small amounts of blood, urine, and saliva for an approved research study that gets underway Wednesday."This is ground zero for the launch of this really important study," said former NFL player and broadcaster Solomon Wilcots, who sits on a "players council" for the company. Jeff Fisher: I got an apology letter from Vince Young, but my name was spelled wrong
It doesn't seem as though the bad blood between former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher and quarterback Vince Young will be getting better anytime soon.Young told SI.com's Greg Bishop last summer that he wrote a letter in 2013 to apologize to Fisher for his role in their fractured relationship, but Fisher told Paul Kuharsky.com on Saturday that he still hasn't responded."Yes, I got a letter from Vince," Fisher said. "And I didn't respond. My name was spelled wrong on the letter, the letter came from the University of Texas, and I had no way of knowing if it was (really) from him. Contract talks between Steelers, Bell on hold
The Pittsburgh Steelers have put contract negotiations with franchise-tagged running back Le'Veon Bell on hold.General manager Kevin Colbert made the announcement Sunday. The front office will keep its focus on free agency and the upcoming draft. The Steelers will resume dialogue with Bell's representatives eventually, Colbert said, adding that there's no update on a multi-year agreement.Pittsburgh elected to use its franchise tag on Bell for the second consecutive year."At this point, after we tagged Le'Veon, we move into other matters of free agency," Colbert said at the NFL owners meetings, according to Bob Labriola of Steelers.com. "We (also) continue with draft preparation, so it's really not anything we're choosing to ignore, it's just the circumstances of other things that need to be taken care of at the moment. Free agency takes precedence, but we're also trying to keep up with our draft operation as well."Bell was staunchly opposed to receiving another one-year contract and has yet to sign the deal. He admitted in early March that he has little choice but to play on the tag for another season and said it'd be a "rerun of last year," when he skipped training camp and signed his tender just days ahead of the season opener.Colbert remains hopeful Bell will attend this year's training camp.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. John O'Korn: I'm the most NFL-ready QB in the draft
The 2018 NFL Draft lacks a consensus top quarterback, with the likes of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, and Baker Mayfield vying to be the first signal-caller off the board. One name that isn't under consideration is Michigan's John O'Korn, as teams seek prospects with high upsides and a strong resume as a starter. But for those looking for someone who could start from Day 1, O'Korn believes he's top of the class."Honestly, I think I'm the most NFL-ready quarterback in this draft just as far as terminology, and knowing what to do on a day-to-day basis, game-planning," O'Korn said, according to Angelique S. Chengelis of The Detroit Press."I was part of the game-plan meetings with coach Harbaugh, coach (Pep) Hamilton, the whole staff, coach (Tim) Drevno, all last fall, so just on a day-to-day basis what it takes to be an NFL quarterback, I think I would choose myself over any other guy in this draft in that regard."While O'Korn isn't a lock to be drafted after tossing just two touchdowns and six interceptions as a part-time starter under Jim Harbaugh, it appears he has the necessary confidence to try to make his NFL dream a reality regardless of what happens on April 26.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The auction site estimates the card to be worth $3.5 million, which would set a record for the highest price ever paid for a baseball card at auction, according to the Associated Press. The current record is $3.12 million, which someone paid two years ago for a Honus Wagner 1909 card."It's what I consider the new face of card collecting," Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions for Heritage, said. "For decades it's been the (Wagner card). Eagles' Pederson: Trade offers for Foles were 'nothing too crazy'
The Eagles were reportedly seeking more than first- and fourth-round picks in exchange for Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles this offseason, but apparently Philadelphia didn't receive any offers that came near its hefty asking price."We did not," Pederson said to NFL Network's Steve Wyche when asked if the team got any interesting trade offers for Foles, according to NFL.com's Edward Lewis. "Nothing too crazy. It had to be the right deal for us to do that. But there wasn't anything coming down our way for Nick."While Carson Wentz believes he'll be ready for the start of the 2018 season after tearing his ACL in December, the Eagles likely don't want to lose their top-tier insurance policy unless an offer blows them away.If a starting quarterback on another team suffers a major injury during training camp, and Wentz continues to make strides, Philly may then be tempted to offload Foles for significant future draft assets. But until then, it appears Philadelphia's Super Bowl hero is staying put.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cowboys, Witten restructure contract to free up nearly $3.5M
The Dallas Cowboys have restructured tight end Jason Witten's contract which will free up approximately $3.5 million in cap space, sources confirmed to ESPN's Todd Archer.Witten, 35, is the second Cowboys player to agree to such terms, as four-time Pro Bowl center Travis Frederick restructured his deal last week, saving the team close to $7.5 million. The longtime tight end is aiming to play a franchise-record 16th campaign for the Cowboys. Not only has Witten been incredibly durable despite his age, he's provided steady value as part of Dallas' passing game, finishing second on the team with 63 receptions and five touchdowns last season.Witten is under contract until 2021."I feel like if you don't have (the desire to win a title) you don't need to be playing," Witten told Archer in late February. "If you've got to convince yourself of that or, 'Hey, can I amp up for one more?' That's already a sign (to call it quits). And that's never been the case with me to this point. Suh's patience will ensure he finds perfect fit in free agency
NFL free agency has been open for 10 days, and only one elite player remains unsigned: Ndamukong Suh.The five-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle has gone the opposite way of his peers who rushed to sign big-money deals before the official league year began. With four teams reportedly in the hunt - the Saints, Titans, Rams, and Jets - Suh hasn't been in a hurry to put pen to paper. While some may wonder what's taking so long, the 31-year-old's approach to free agency is actually more logical than the way things usually shake out.Firstly, the opportunity to meet with multiple teams and get comfortable with the city, potential coaches, and front-office personnel is something far too few players take advantage of. Big-money contracts come with big expectations, and it's awfully hard to meet those if a player doesn't like where he's living or who he's working with. Brock Osweiler signing with the Houston Texans without ever speaking to Bill O'Brien in 2016 is a perfect example of why players shouldn't blindly chase the money.Suh is also not at risk of missing opportunities by waiting too long, as no other defensive tackle on the market can match his production. Some players sign quickly in fear of being stuck with limited options, but top-level guys are in a league of their own with no shortage of suitors. The former Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions defender's decision hasn't been helped by the four teams involved, as they each offer a different combination of pros and cons.TeamCap spaceTitans$45.33MJets$37.04MRams$35.18Saints$5.6M(Cap numbers courtesy: Spotrac)JetsThe Jets emerged late and are the only suitor that hasn't had Suh in for a visit, but the 31-year-old should already be familiar with the area after spending last summer interning in Manhattan. On top of reportedly offering the largest contract for Suh, New York can provide more off the field than the other suitors. The 31-year-old has shown an interest in building his business portfolio and would have plenty of opportunities to do so with the Jets. The downfall with "Gang Green" is that they give Suh the worst chance to win right away.TitansThe Titans can't really argue they'll give Suh his best chance at a championship, but they can actually give the defensive tackle more than the Jets, as they have more cap space and there's no state income tax in Tennessee. If Suh wants to just make his money and play football, the Titans will likely be his choice. While they cracked the playoffs last season, they're still in the up-and-coming stage of their franchise, with a young quarterback and a first-time head coach. That's not to say Tennesse wouldn't be a contender if they added Suh, but if it's a win-or-go-home attitude he's carrying, it may be the Big Easy or Hollywood where he makes his next home.SaintsThe Saints are an interesting suitor, as interior defensive line wasn't expected to be a need for them and they don't have much cap space. But the move to go after Suh says a lot about why he may choose to don the black and gold.As Drew Brees and Sean Payton age, the pressure to bring another Lombardi Trophy to NOLA mounts and significant upgrades at any position are welcome. Given their cap situation, the Saints would be forced to offer Suh a short-term deal, which may be his preference if he wants to hit free agency again before he's too old. New Orleans is a more experienced team than the Rams, which was likely a selling point during Suh's visit. However, if the decision comes down to dollars and cents, the Saints don't have the cap space to compete.RamsAfter making major defensive upgrades through trades this offseason, the Rams have been quiet in free agency other than their pursuit of Suh. That inactivity has left the team with plenty of cap space to offer Suh what he wants and pair him with Donald to create possibly the best defensive tackle tandem ever. Behind the Saints, the Rams offer the best chance to win right away, though their inexperience in the playoffs isn't something Suh can help with.Income tax is a big worry in California, but he would have opportunities outside football to make some extra cash in Hollywood. He was also raised on the west coast in Oregon, so if he wants to be closer to home, the other suitors may be out of luck.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Temple was also stomped on by Puryear and blacked out before waking up to more kicks to his face as Beckham stood idly by allowing the assault to continue.Temple says he was bloodied, had two front teeth chipped, and had his lip busted. Michael Bennett indicted for felony charge of injuring elderly at Super Bowl LI
Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett was indicted Friday for the felony charge of injury of the elderly, according to the office of the Harris County district attorney. The incident occurred at the end of Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in Houston on Feb. 5, 2017. Attempting to make his way onto the field to celebrate his brother Martellus' victory with the New England Patriots, Bennett was told by security personnel he had to use a different entrance for field access.Houston police said in a press conference Friday that Bennett instead forced his way through stadium security, specifically pushing past a 66-year-old paraplegic woman, who suffered injuries including a sprained shoulder."I think it's pretty pathetic that you would put your hands on a 66-year-old paraplegic and just treat them like they don't exist," Houston police chief Art Acevedo said, according to Q13 Fox.After knocking down the stadium workers, Bennett allegedly had a confrontation with an officer whom he swore at before making his way to the field. Houston police say the officer chose to attend to the fallen workers rather than chase down Bennett.

From the booth to the links: Tony Romo takes a shot at the PGA Tour
As former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo stood on the driving range of the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship earlier this week, the sound of the balls he hit was the same as the shots by golfers adjacent to him, according to those Tour professionals - guys who make their living, week in and week out, on the biggest stage in the sport. That’s because, this week, Romo is one of them. The former quarterback, and now analyst for CBS, received a special exemption into this week’s Tour event, opposite of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship where most of the top 64 in the Official World Golf Ranking are playing.Although it may be odd for the casual sports fan to see Romo’s name in the field, his appearance in a professional golf event is not unprecedented.Jerry Rice, the legendary NFL wide receiver, and Stephen Curry, former NBA MVP and champion with the Golden State Warriors, have both played in Web.com Tour events (Curry as recently as last summer), and country music star Jake Owen will also play in an upcoming Web.com Tour event this year. The initial critique is that the non-golfers are taking spots away from guys who are trying to make a living doing exactly this. However, sponsors are given at least a handful of unlimited exemptions to give out to whomever they choose - local club professionals, former PGA Tour golfers who may need an opportunity and have been loyal to the event in the past, or, in this case, professional athletes. And for the Web.com Tour - or even this week’s event, which plays opposite where household names Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, and Justin Thomas are teeing it up - it makes for good exposure.“Obviously with how the sponsor exemptions go, there was a lot of talk about me taking somebody's spot that's trying to earn a living on this tour. Obviously that's not what the sponsor's exemption is about. There are 154 guys out here that are unbelievable talents that fight every week to do what they do. So to be able to see them up close and personal was a treat for me,” Curry said after participating in the Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae last year, via pgatour.com.Romo shot a 5-over-par 77 in his PGA Tour debut. He was even par on his front nine, bouncing back from starting his day with two straight bogeys to make two straight birdies, one from upwards of 40 feet.He admitted to reporters he was nervous on the greens and tried to get the speed right as the round chugged along. He said he would play more aggressive on Friday as he tries to do something neither Curry nor Rice could do: make the cut.“Ultimately over 18 holes … your flaws start to show at some point. That's why you compete. You compete to know how to practice. Then you go from there and improve so the next time you step out here ... I really hit some good shots close and I had a chance to, like I said, be under par pretty easily,” Romo said. “Then two or three shots on the back nine cost me, but that's golf.”Prior to the tournament getting underway, he talked about the difference between football and golf, besides the obvious. He said, on the mental side, football is reactionary - making decisions after the snap, reacting to the play.“In golf, you’re trying to commit wholeheartedly to something before you even pull the club out of your bag,” he said.“I’m not worried about getting hit before I hit the ball, so it’s at my own tempo, my own speed in this sport,” he added with a laugh.Romo admitted earlier in the week that he knows this may be his only chance to tee it up with the professionals, so he’s doing his best to take advantage of this opportunity.“I understand how important this week is,” he said. “I told people earlier … it’s like a free agent in football. You’re only afforded so many chances. If you’re the first pick of the draft, you’ve got a few years before they cast you aside. When you get an opportunity in life you want to be prepared and ready for it.”Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Manziel 'happy with where things are' in comeback after workout for scouts
Johnny Manziel's journey back to the big leagues took a big stride Thursday as the quarterback worked out in front of NFL scouts at the University of San Diego pro day.Representatives from 13 teams were on hand as Manziel - showcasing himself for the first time since being on the Cleveland Browns' roster in 2015 - showed elements of his arm strength and athleticism. Manziel attempted 38 passes to a pair of University of San Diego receivers and had only two incompletions, according to ESPN's Eric Williams. The former Heisman Trophy winner - who will appear in the Spring League next month - did what he could to abate any worries about him falling back into the alcohol abuse and other bad habits that contributed to his early release from the Browns."I'm a married man. I'm at home with my wife and my dogs, and I don't have a lot of time after that after doing six-hour training days," Manziel said. "I'm happy with where things are. I think things are going well, and I couldn't ask for a better place to be in my life right now."Manziel, 25, has been in and out of the public spotlight since being cut by the Browns, and remains well aware that he has a long road ahead in trying to convince teams, fans, and media that he has changed his ways."I know I've rubbed people the wrong way," Manziel said. "I know there's still people that still doubt what I'm doing and still doubt where I'm at."For me, (I have) spurts in the past of being good. I've spurts in the past of showing promise and looking like I'm on the right path, and when I think I get there, something else happens. That's kind of the pattern that's been there in the last couple years of my life since college. So for me, the key right now is to be consistent and to continue what I'm doing day in and day out."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Eric Reid not planning to continue kneeling during anthem
Former San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid feels he's being shunned by NFL owners as he searches for a new team because of his history of protesting social injustice during the national anthem by kneeling. While he continues to be active in off-field matters, Reid says he is willing to stop his protests, citing the man who inspired him to start kneeling in 2016."From the beginning, Colin (Kaepernick) has been flexible," Reid said at Stanford's pro day on Thursday, according to Matt Maiocco of NBCS Bay Area. "He started by sitting. He changed it up. We decided to kneel. And we understand that you got to change with the times. So I'm not saying I’m going to stop being active, because I won’t. I’m just going to consider different ways to be active, different ways to bring awareness to the issues of this country to improve on."I don't think it’ll be in the form of protesting during the anthem. And I said 'during' because it’s crazy to me that the narrative got changed to we were protesting the anthem, because that wasn’t the case. But I think we’re going to take a different approach to how to be active."Niners general manager John Lynch says he expects Reid to be signed once the market on safeties starts moving and left the door open for the 26-year-old to return to the team."I'd never say never," Lynch said about the possibility of re-signing Reid. "I really do think opportunities will start to come his way. We’ve been monitoring it closely and we’ll see how that shakes out."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Bennett: Seahawks changed after Lynch left
The Seattle Seahawks have undergone radical change this offseason. In a matter of months, head coach Pete Carroll has dismissed his offensive and defensive coordinators and the team has parted with such mainstays as Richard Sherman and Michael Bennett.Bennett and his brother Martellus were guests on "The Bill Simmons Podcast" on Wednesday, and Michael said he sensed a change in the team following running back Marshawn Lynch's retirement after the 2015 season."Oh, yeah, man. Marshawn's personality is so big and he's such a ... he's one of those dudes, he's really like Nina Simone; he's just misunderstood. ... He's such a great guy when it comes to doing community. He's just a good teammate. He shows up to everybody's thing. He plays hard. When he practices, he practices hard," Bennett said."So when he left, you could feel it. He was just that guy who had that swag that made the Seahawks feel like a different type of team."Later on the show, Bennett said every team needs a player like Lynch."You don't want to be with a whole bunch of Russell Wilsons. You gotta have three or four Marshawn Lynches on your team that at any moment, you never know what they're going to do. Whether they're going to come to work or dropkick the coach. You know, Latrell Sprewell. You just never know," he said."You can't have a whole bunch of nice people on a sports team. You need one good guy that does everything right, you know, prays and does all the stuff then goes, 'Yeah! Let's go play!'"Then you need some thugs. That's just how it goes."- With h/t to The News TribuneCopyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
