Giants trade Pierre-Paul to Buccaneers
The New York Giants have traded defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and a fourth-round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a third- and a fourth-round selection. The Giants are moving to a 3-4 defense, an awkward fit for the 6-foot-5, 275-pounder who has spent the past eight seasons in the Big Apple.New York will carry $15 million in dead money by moving Pierre-Paul.For the Bucs, it's a significant and much-needed upgrade to their pass-rush following a season in which they finished dead last in team sacks (22).Pierre-Paul joins a revamped line that now boasts Vinny Curry, Gerald McCoy, Noah Spence, and Beau Allen.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Allen Hurns to visit with Jets
Recently released receiver Allen Hurns is scheduled to make a free-agent visit with the New York Jets on Thursday, ESPN's Josina Anderson reports, citing a source. The Jets are believed to be one of many teams interested in the four-year pro. The Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, and Cleveland Browns are also vying for his services, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Hurns was released Tuesday after four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The free-agent market has been financially rewarding for receivers, but few proven options remained until Hurns became available. He's two years removed from a 1,000-yard season, though injuries have hampered his production over the past couple of campaigns.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Gore making free-agent visit with Dolphins
One of the biggest names remaining on the open market is set to visit with the Miami Dolphins.Five-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore will meet with the Dolphins on Thursday, a source informed ESPN's Adam Schefter.Gore was born in Miami and played his college ball at the University of Miami. He could be heading home for the final stop of his professional career. The 13-year veteran spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the San Francisco 49ers and the past three with the Indianapolis Colts. He currently ranks fifth in NFL history in career rushing yards with 14,026. He's just 75 yards behind Curtis Martin for fourth on the all-time list.Nearing his 35th birthday, Gore remains productive. Although his yards-per-carry average dropped below 4 in each of the past three seasons, he fell just short of 1,000 yards during the 2017 campaign. His 961 yards on the ground were good for the 12th most by a running back last year.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Not just Johnny Football: How many Spring League players do you recognize?
The NFL is no longer the only league on the block. With the recent announcements of the XFL and Alliance of American Football, the Spring League is almost getting lost in the mix as football fans aren't used to such a variety. But the league that starts up April 7 will get a boost this season by adding former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel to the four-team organization. The league announced its full rosters on Tuesday and there are more than a few former NFL players hoping to make a comeback.
Potential top pick Darnold impresses at rainy pro day
Sam Darnold may have been a little uncomfortable throwing in the rain at USC's pro day Wednesday, but gutting through the less-than-ideal weather only helped the quarterback show what he could do.With plenty of scouts, coaches, general managers, and owners - including Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam - in attendance, Darnold made around 60 throws after declining to move up his workout to better weather."I don't think it would have been fair to change the schedule with all of the other guys training for the pro day," Darnold said, according to ESPN's Eric Williams. "So I just wanted my guys to be comfortable - my teammates - that was first and foremost."But I also think it was a perfect opportunity to be able to throw in the rain and show these guys I could throw in the rain."
NFL VP: Pass interference rule change 'has some momentum'
Joe Flacco may be losing his greatest weapon.NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent says a proposed rule change for pass interference penalties is gaining ground. The rule - which would make the pass interference call a 15-yard penalty instead of placing the ball at the spot of the foul - was proposed by the New York Jets and would reflect how the NCAA handles the same infraction. The competition committee was not expected to be in favor of the new rule at the combine, but some members are changing their opinions, sources told ESPN's Kevin Seifert. The committee will discuss the proposal at next week's league meetings and the rule could be voted on as early as Tuesday."We had good discussion in the room," Vincent said Wednesday. "It will be interesting when we get with the coaches. ... I don't want to get ahead of it, but I can tell you this: It had momentum in the room among the competition committee."The rule has been somewhat controversial as teams are concerned defenders will be enticed to commit interference on plays over 15 yards as 129 pass interference calls in 2017 resulted in a gain of over that distance, according to ESPN.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bridgewater confident but not comfortable discussing knee
Teddy Bridgewater showed confidence in himself and his health when he signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets that reportedly included just $500,000 in guaranteed money, but he's not quite ready to get into details regarding his recovering knee.Although the 25-year-old has not completed a pass since 2015, he believes he's "capable of performing at a high level" and welcomes competition for the starting quarterback job, but when asked about his knee on a Wednesday conference call, he was tight-lipped."That's not something I'm comfortable talking about right now," said Bridgewater, declining to say if his knee is near 100 percent ready, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. "I'm pretty sure that will be a discussion I have with the training staff and we'll come up with a plan moving forward."Bridgewater's contract requires him to be active for all 16 games and play at least half of the snaps to earn $4 million in incentives after taking snaps in just one game over the past two seasons. The former Minnesota Vikings starter strongly believes he will be ready to get back on the field by the time Week 1 rolls around."I'm very confident in myself," said Bridgewater. "I'm confident in the athletic training staff and the coaching staff that they can get me back to the player that I once was."But at the same time, we're only in March and the only way to get better is to put the work in now. I'm excited about this opportunity I have ... I can't wait. I'm excited."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Falcons' Dimitroff: Matt Ryan's extension needs to be 'win-win for both parties'
Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff is taking everything into consideration when it comes to working on a contract extension for quarterback Matt Ryan.Roughly a week after the Minnesota Vikings made Kirk Cousins the league's highest-paid quarterback on a three-year, fully-guaranteed $84-million contract, Dimitroff is factoring it into how he proceeds with negotiations for the 2016 MVP."I think all of the market will factor into how we do Matt and how we approach Matt, there's no question about that,'' Dimitroff said Wednesday, according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN."If I were to state the significance of it, I think it's just a piece of the pie. His representation is looking at it and, of course, we're looking at it through a different lens. We're always mindful that we're aware of everything else. From an analytical standpoint and a statistical standpoint and a financial standpoint, we know that it ultimately comes back to what we're doing with this organization and what we deem as a win-win for both parties,'' said Dimitroff.Ryan will enter the final year of a five-year, $103.75-million extension in 2018. He's due $19.25 million but will carry a cap hit of $21.65 million. His own performance and the market for franchise quarterbacks have risen significantly since that extension was signed. The league's five highest quarterback contracts on an annual average value have been handed out since last summer.NameTeamAAVKirk CousinsVikings$28MJimmy Garappolo49ers$27.5MMatthew StaffordLions$27MDrew BreesSaints$25MDerek CarrRaiders$25MDimitroff says he continues negotiating the contract with Ryan's agent, Tom Condon, but he, and head coach Dan Quinn, have maintained a relationship with Ryan throughout the process."Matt knows what this team is about and he knows what he can do for this team at a number of levels. He knows that he's right up against a third contract in the NFL, and those are big contracts and significant discussion points. And he's very aware of that. And he's aware of everyone on the team being aware of it. He doesn't want to be a distraction. That's him. Ultimately, he's a team guy through and through. Again, hopefully we can move through this and get this done,'' Dimitroff said.Ryan followed up his MVP campaign by completing 64.7 percent of 529 pass attempts for 4,095 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in his first season under offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian in 2017.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Martellus Bennett still mulling return for 2018 season
Martellus Bennett has flip-flopped about retirement over the past year, and it seems the free-agent tight end doesn't appear any closer to making a decision about his playing future. The 31-year-old went from being a Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots in 2016 to becoming a new member of the Green Bay Packers the following season, where he announced that 2017 would likely be his last season. Bennett, however, was dealt a controversial release from the Packers less than a year into his three-year contract. He then rejoined the Patriots but finished the season on injured reserve and reportedly changed his mind about retiring.Bennett, who was released by the Patriots in early March, joined "The Rich Eisen Show" on Wednesday and admitted that he's still unsure of what his next step in life will be."Right now I'm just living life and trying to figure out what I want to do next," Bennett said, according to NFL.com's Chris Wesseling. "Is it to continue to play? Is it to explore other options? What is it that I want to do?"Bennett says that the physical and mental toll of football have been a lot to handle and, while he has other opportunities to pursue outside of the game, he still enjoys throwing on his pads."So it's just like where am I in a mental capacity overall?" Bennett said. "I don't have to play. I play football because it's fun. I enjoy stiff-arming people, jumping over people, and competing with my friends and things like that. I've been working out, preparing to play."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
The Dez Dilemma: Should the Cowboys move on from Bryant?
"Hell, no. I believe in me."It's been three months since Dez Bryant uttered those words when asked if he'd accept a pay cut to stay with the Dallas Cowboys, and his future with the team remains just as unclear now as it did then.Everyone involved in the situation has said the right things. Bryant promised to "shut a lot of people up" next season following three years without hitting 1,000 yards, while owner Jerry Jones said he wants his star wideout to remain with the team. However, the 29-year-old continues to be the biggest question mark surrounding America's Team, and there's no easy answer, mostly because of Dallas' questionable roster construction and cap management. The Cowboys have been a top-heavy team for years, and have exacerbated their issues by intentionally designing contracts in a way that allows them to be renegotiated when necessary to create cap space, essentially kicking their problems further and further down the road. That's what made the Tony Romo situation so difficult to navigate. That's why Dallas was forced to move on from DeMarcus Ware years before they should. And that's why there is a serious possibility that Bryant won't be a Cowboy in 2018.Bryant's $16.5-million hit accounts for nearly 10 percent of the Cowboys' 2018 cap - a tenable number if he was still a legitimate top-10 receiver and No. 1 target, but hard to swallow for a player who no longer can act as the focal point of the passing offense.
Fantasy value: Who's up, who's down after Week 1 of free agency?
Fantasy managers must rid themselves of any 2017 biases heading into the 2018 season. The fantasy landscape just underwent a significant overhaul, as it does every offseason, with NFL teams retooling their real-world rosters. A player's performance in a previous season is no longer a benchmark for what they can do the next year, with not only their team but also opponents within their division and on their schedule taking different forms. Here's a look at the 10 players whose value was most drastically changed by the opening week of free agency.Mitch Trubisky, Bears ▲2017 statsGPCMP%YDSTDINT1259.4219377Trubisky can still lean on high-end running backs Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen in his sophomore season, but he'll have a new cast of pass-catchers that should help his completion percentage while adding yards after the catch - a stat in which the Bears ranked 28th last year.Wide receivers Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel and tight end Trey Burton are versatile and well-rounded. Anything the Bears get from oft-injured former top-10 pick Kevin White will be viewed as a bonus, rather than a necessity.Trubisky won't be anything more than a late-round flier as a backup in standard one-quarterback leagues, but he should be watched closely in the opening weeks, as he could be an early steal off the waiver wire.Tyreek Hill, Chiefs ▼GPRECTGTSYDSTD157510511837The addition of Sammy Watkins will cut into Hill's target share, as he represents a significant upgrade over Albert Wilson, who served as the No. 2 receiver in Kansas City last season. Tight end Travis Kelce is sure to remain the team's target leader.Add in the fact that it's Patrick Mahomes' first season at the helm, and Hill's likely to see a decline in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. He should be a low-end WR2 reliant on big plays. He finished as the No. 4 receiver in standard scoring formats last season.Paul Richardson, Redskins ▲GPRECTGTSYDSTD1644807036Richardson will help replace the departed Ryan Grant and soon-to-depart Terrelle Pryor in the new Alex Smith-ran offense.Richardson leaves behind a volatile role as the No. 2 receiver for the Seahawks. He broke out last season but posted a dismal catch rate in a system that forced quarterback Russell Wilson to make too many of his throws on the run.Smith's more predictable and steady style, as well as a more significant role, could allow Richardson to enter WR2 range. His five red-zone touchdowns last season would've led the Redskins' receiving corps.Jared Goff, Rams ▼GPCMP%YDSTDINT1562.13804287The Rams led the league with 29.9 points per game last season, partly due to the defense allowing 20.6 per game. The offense often had to keep throwing and scoring late into games, allowing Goff to finish his sophomore campaign as the 10th-ranked fantasy quarterback. The team has been aggressive early this offseason in rebuilding the defense. Improving that unit will help build larger early-game leads, reducing Goff's need to take shots down the field. His weekly fantasy upside will be limited, even though he's unlikely to be greatly affected by the loss of Watkins.Demaryius Thomas/Emmanuel Sanders, Broncos ▲ThomasGPRECTGTSYDSTD16831419495SandersGPRECTGTSYDSTD1247945552Thomas and Sanders each had 1,000-yard-season streaks come to an end in 2017. Their seven combined touchdowns were easily their fewest over the prolonged stretch. The two totaled a monstrous 65 red-zone targets with Peyton Manning in 2014, according to NFL Savant, but they dipped to just 28 last season. Adam Thielen, Kyle Rudolph, and Stefon Diggs totaled 50 with Case Keenum throwing them the ball with the Minnesota Vikings.Keenum showed he can easily support two top receivers, as Thielen and Diggs ranked 11th and 18th, respectively, in standard scoring. Thomas and Sanders can both be high-end WR2s.Carlos Hyde, Browns ▼GPATTYDSTDRec. YDS1624094080Hyde left the up-and-coming San Francisco 49ers as a free agent and signed with an improved, but still questionable, Browns team.He also leaves behind a role that saw him carry the ball a career-high 240 times in 2017 and enters a timeshare with not only Duke Johnson, but potentially rookie Saquon Barkley, who remains an option for the Browns at either the No. 1 or No. 4 pick.A reduced role and different coaching philosophy will see Hyde drop into RB3-RB4 territory, after finishing 2017 as the 11th-highest-scoring back.Jimmy Graham, Packers ▲GPRECTGTSYDSTD16579852010Graham finished as fantasy's No. 4 tight end in 2017, hauling in 10 touchdowns.Though he was the Seahawks' No. 1 option in the red zone by a significant margin, he never replicated his early-career form with the New Orleans Saints in his three years in Seattle. He joins a Packers team in need of a red-zone presence after they released wide receiver Jordy Nelson, and he'll be served well by returning to a more traditional offense led by Aaron Rodgers.Larry Fitzgerald, Cardinals ▼GPRECTGTSYDSTD1610916111566Fitzgerald's falling stock is less about comparing it to last season than it is about what could've been.He topped 1,000 yards while working with the cast of Carson Palmer, Blaine Gabbert, and Drew Stanton last season, but big things were expected for 2018, as he spent the early part of the offseason recruiting Kirk Cousins.Sam Bradford looked great in Week 1 last year, but backing him up with Mike Glennon in free agency doesn't bode well for Fitzgerald's fantasy production in the all-too-common event of a Bradford injury.Danny Amendola, Dolphins ▲GPRECTGTSYDSTD1561866592The Dolphins were one of the best possible landing spots for Amendola, who's coming off a five-year high of 659 yards, catching 61 of 86 targets. They needed a replacement for Jarvis Landry, who caught a league-leading 112 passes on 160 targets last season.Miami also signed Albert Wilson and has both Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker set to return, but Amendola's expertise working from the slot will keep him on the field.Russell Wilson, Seahawks ▼GPCMP%YDSTDINT1661.339833411The Seahawks' offense once again failed to do much to help Wilson. They allowed Graham and Richardson, their top red-zone options of last season, to leave via free agency. They also failed to properly address the woeful offensive line that has plagued them for years.Running back Chris Carson is a question mark heading into his sophomore season after an injury-shortened rookie campaign, and no significant upgrades have been added. Wilson's fantasy value is boosted by his running ability - he led the Seahawks in rushing in 2017 - but it also leaves him at risk of serious injury, and in full focus of defensive attention. The "Legion of Boom" is no more, while the Rams and 49ers have upgraded their defensive units. Playing from behind can often bolster fantasy production, but Wilson will need some unlikely pieces to step up and help.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Best bargains through 1st week of free agency
While some signings crept out through the media ahead of time, March 21 marks the official one-week anniversary of the NFL's 2018 free-agency period. As per tradition, the league's landscape has been altered quite a bit, as general managers dished out wild contracts to players they may have never even met before. The majority of notable deals, particularly in the early days, had a tendency to overpay free agents, but some contracts have been more friendly for the team than the player. Here are ten of the best bargains so far:Morgan Burnett, SteelersContract: 3 years, $14.5 million (guaranteed amount unknown)After Tyrann Mathieu left the market, Burnett was arguably the best safety available, yet he reportedly did not receive much attention before agreeing to a three-year deal with the Steelers on Tuesday. The 29-year-old had been a consistent force on the back end of the Packers defense for eight seasons, but settled for a below-market deal that includes the 27th-ranked annual average value among safeties. Regardless of how much guaranteed money he ends up with, the Steelers got a steal and managed to upgrade from Mike Mitchell.Mike Pouncey, ChargersContract: 2 years, $15 million with $10 million guaranteedThe former Dolphins center is staying in the warm weather and increasing his chances to win a championship, but he's taking a pay cut to do so. In an offseason that saw Ryan Jensen go from being relatively unknown to the highest-paid center in the league, the 28-year-old Pouncey settled for the 16th-most guaranteed money and 12th-highest annual average value at his position. The Chargers get a leader with Pro Bowl experience to play between two second-year guards, and at a great value.Richard Sherman, 49ersContract: 3 years, $27.15 million with $7 million guaranteedSherman will tell you otherwise, but the contract, which he negotiated himself, is very favorable for the 49ers. The 29-year-old cornerback is betting hard on himself to stay healthy and productive for his new team or risk earning well below other corners with his resume. Sherman is coming off an Achilles injury and gave San Francisco an easy out after one season if he can't recover from his ailment as well as they expect.LeGarrette Blount, LionsContract: 1 year, $2 million (guaranteed amount unknown)Amazingly enough, Blount could take home his highest single-season earnings in 2018 if he gets the full $2 million. The powerful running back can bring the physical attitude the Lions offense has been lacking, at a very modest price (28th among running backs). Though he is 31 years old, Blount hasn't taken as much damage as others with his experience, being used as a complimentary piece for the bulk of his career.Tyrann Mathieu, TexansContract: 1 year, $7 million with $6.5 million guaranteedMathieu went from being paid the second-most among NFL safeties, to a team-friendly contract without any long-term security. The 25-year-old's playmaking had been lacking the last two years as the Arizona Cardinals' overall play dwindled, but he's still very versatile and the athleticism hasn't abandoned him yet. Adding the "Honey Badger" to a defense with J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney should have been too expensive to pull off, but here we are.Teddy Bridgewater, JetsContract: 1 year, $6 million with $500K guaranteed (max value of $15 million with incentives)The Jets managed to avoid any real risk when signing Bridgewater, who has not completed a pass since 2015. According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, Bridgewater has to take at least half the snaps and be on the active roster for every game to earn $4 million of his incentives, and throw for over 3,000 yards and at least 21 touchdowns to get another $3 million. If all of that were to happen, Bridgewater would still be the cheapest starting quarterback who's not on a rookie contract.Nickell Robey-Coleman, RamsContract: 3 years, $15.75 million with $8 million guaranteedSlot cornerbacks have essentially become starters in the NFL with the amount of five-defensive back sets teams use, but Robey-Coleman was not paid like a starter. The slot specialist is set up perfectly for his role in between Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters with the Rams, and is on a deal that will pay him $3.25 million less than fellow nickelback Aaron Colvin, who joined the Texans in free agency. He's got a perfect name to play nickelback and, in the eyes of the Rams, a perfect contract.AJ McCarron, BillsContract: 2 years, $10 million with $7.9 million guaranteedAs the only potential starter not named Colin Kaepernick left on the market, the Bills were almost forced to sign McCarron after they were a little late to the quarterback-signing party. Yet, they managed to negotiate an extremely affordable deal in a league that loves to overpay the passers. McCarron's salary is so low that the Bills must be sending the message they consider him a backup. But at the moment, he's at the top of their depth chart.Julius Peppers, PanthersContract: 1 year, $5 million (guaranteed amount unknown)The 38-year-old defensive end accepted a cheap deal to come back to his first club last season, joining up on a one-year, $4-million deal before exploding for his highest sack total (11) since 2012. Despite tying for the team lead in sacks, Peppers didn't go after much of a pay bump, returning for $2.5 million less per year than Mario Addison, who also got to the quarterback 11 times.Honorable mentions:

If found guilty, Martin could face up to six years in custody, according to Los Angeles County court records, per NFL.com.The charges stem from disturbing images Martin posted on Instagram on Feb. 22 in which he tagged four people, including former Miami Dolphins teammates Richie Incognito and Mike Pouncey, with a shotgun, bullets, and a quoted that read: "When you're a bully victim and a coward, your options are suicide or revenge." Martin's former high school, Harvard Westlake, was also tagged in the photo and filed a restraining order on Martin after being forced to close for the day.In 2013, as a member of the Dolphins, it was revealed Martin dealt with vicious harassment driven by Incognito, Pouncey, and guard John Jerry. Report: Anthem policy change will not be discussed at owner meetings
NFL owners are not expected to vote on changing the league's policy regarding the national anthem next week when they meet, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.Though player conduct during the national anthem has been a hot topic after increased player protests in 2017, owners will instead discuss the social justice platform in general at the meetings. And Freshly-signed New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis expects that broad discussion will help reduce the number of player protests next season."The league has been instrumental in helping us bring light to our community and the issues that are going on in them," Davis, a member of the Players Coalition, told ESPN's Rich Cimini on Tuesday. The league announced in December that it would be pledging $90 million over seven seasons to social justice causes and forming a committee made up of five players and five owners to lead the program.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Jets, Cowboys among 10 teams showing interest in Hurns
Less than 24 hours after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars, wideout Allen Hurns is a hot commodity.During an appearance on WFNZ The Fan, Hurns said close to 10 teams have reached out, including the Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets, and Oakland Raiders, to name a few.The Jets, in particular, seem to be in hot pursuit of an upgrade at wide receiver, as the team has already met with Terrelle Pryor.New York was expected to be the first team to meet with the former Jaguars receiver on Wednesday, but a snowstorm has altered those plans. Instead, Hurns will visit with the Cowboys, according to ESPN's Josina Anderson.Hurns' future in Jacksonville became clouded following the signing of Donte Moncrief, who agreed to a fully guaranteed one-year, $9.6-million contract with the Jaguars on Thursday. Still, Hurns' release caught some off guard, particularly because he was slated to earn less annually ($7 million) than Moncrief. After a career year in 2015 that saw Hurns reel in 64 catches and 1,031 yards with 10 touchdowns, the wide receiver and the Jaguars agreed to a four-year, $40-million extension. Since signing on the dotted line, a dropoff in production and multiple injuries has sealed the 26-year-old's fate, as Hurns has averaged only 10 games, 37 receptions, 481 yards, and three touchdowns in two seasons.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: ESPN hires former head coach John Fox as studio analyst
Former NFL head coach John Fox will join ESPN as a studio analyst for the upcoming season, sources confirmed to Richard Deitsch of The Athletic.Fox, who was relieved of his coaching duties by the Chicago Bears Jan. 1, will replace the departed Herm Edwards, who was named head coach of Arizona State in early December.ESPN failed to lure former quarterback Peyton Manning to the booth despite a lucrative offer that reportedly would have paid the 41-year-old upward of $10 million a year.Fox, meanwhile, is expected to represent ESPN on NFL Live and Sportscenter.Prior to coaching the Bears from 2015-17, Fox helped guide the Denver Broncos to four straight postseason berths, including an appearance in Super Bowl XLVIII, and another with the Carolina Panthers (XXXVIII).Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jaguars' Ramsey: Derwin James should go No. 1 in NFL Draft
Perhaps NFL front offices should listen to Jalen Ramsey. The talented corner, who declared himself the best player in the 2016 NFL Draft after being selected fifth overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars, attached the same label to fellow Florida State product and defensive back Derwin James."(He's the) top player in this draft this year. Should go No. 1 overall, but you know how things go in the draft," Ramsey told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. "You never know where he could go ... top five, top 10, top 15 ... Jags hoping we can come here and get him."Considering James' skillset, it's highly unlikely Ramsey gets his wish, as the defensive back will presumably be gone by the time the Jaguars select at 28. A potential top-10 draft pick, James - taking one out of Ramsey's book - sung his own praise, particularly when asked about certain media outlets slotting defensive back and Alabama product Minkah Fitzpatrick ahead of him."I know what type of player I am. I know I'm the best player in this draft."The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, and San Francisco 49ers at No. 7 to No. 9 appear to be the most logical landing spot for James on April 26 in Arlington, Texas.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. 49ers' Sherman: Eric Reid 'deserves' a big-money deal despite his anthem protests
Richard Sherman, the newest addition to the San Francisco 49ers, believes free-agent Eric Reid warrants a contract despite the safety's belief that teams are balking over his devotion to kneel in protest of the national anthem."We (the NFLPA) are concerned because he played at a high level for just about every year he's played, and he's made enough plays to be signed with a team and to make his money," Sherman said at his introductory press conference on Tuesday, according to Cam Inman of The Mercury News. "He deserves his money. I would think he's a top-five and top-10 safety in this league. He deserves to be paid accordingly."Last week, Reid shared his thoughts on the matter, saying that general managers aren't the ones calling the shots and that owners are, ultimately, deciding his fate.
Titans' Byard embarrasses Deion Sanders on Twitter
Despite making the Pro Bowl, first-team All-Pro, and tying for the league lead in interceptions as a sophomore in 2017, some people still don't know who Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard is.At least one of those people are in the Hall of Fame and are named Deion Sanders. The 50-year-old retired cornerback ran down his list of the best safeties in the league on NFL Network on Tuesday, ranking new Houston Texans defender Tyrann Mathieu at the top.Byard caught the segment on television and was not impressed.
Barkley skips Penn State pro day without RB coaches in attendance
The top running back prospect of this year's draft class is letting his combine workout stand. After discovering the Penn State pro day would be run without NFL running back coaches in attendance, Saquon Barkley sat out Tuesday. He had only planned to workout in position drills prior to learning of who would be watching."I woke up this morning and that was the game plan," Barkley said, according to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg. "But then when I realized there wasn't a running backs coach here, I figured there was no point for me to run routes or do drills."Barkley will soon begin visiting with teams and said he may do one or two workouts for pro clubs, but he would rather let his college tape tell the story of what he can do."I'm over this stage, running in shorts and sweatshirts," Barkley said. "That's cool and all, but I'm not a combine guy. I want you to throw on the film and I want to show that I'm a football player."While Barkley says he's not a combine guy, he was arguably the most impressive athlete in Indianapolis last month.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Sherman plans to continue living in Seattle
Richard Sherman may play for the enemy, but he doesn't plan to cut all his ties to Seattle. The three-time All-Pro corner was released by the Seahawks on March 9 and signed with the rival San Francisco 49ers the next day. Nonetheless, Sherman hopes to remain ingrained in the Seattle community."Just because I'm leaving Seattle doesn't mean I'm ... leaving Seattle," Sherman wrote in a Players' Tribune piece published Tuesday. "There may be very little loyalty in football, as I've learned, but Seattle is still where my kids will continue to go to school. It's where I met (fiancee) Ashley. It's where her parents live. It's where we own a home that we don't plan on selling. It's where I'm going to continue to work with the kids in the surrounding communities the way I always have."Shoot, I own a Wingstop in Seattle. And I highly doubt people there are gonna stop eating wings just because I don't play football there anymore."While Sherman hopes his personal and business relationships in the area stay friendly, he also provided some insight into how his departure from the Seahawks took place.Sherman said there was no contract negotiation with the team. He was informed during a face-to-face meeting that he would be released and the transaction became official two days later.Sherman says Seahawks general manager John Schneider asked for the opportunity to match any contract offer he received, so the player called his former GM before he signed with the 49ers."I gave the Seahawks an opportunity to match. They didn't," Sherman said.Sherman previously told Peter King of The MMQB that the Seahawks informed him the incentives in the 49ers' offer were too expensive to match.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. New football league plans to debut week after Super Bowl LIII
NFL fans won't need to wait nearly as long as usual for their next taste of football following Super Bowl LIII.The Alliance of American Football, a new league founded by documentary director Charlie Ebersol, plans to debut Feb. 9, 2019, according to ESPN's Darren Rovell - just one week after the Super Bowl,Ebersol directed ESPN's 2017 "30 for 30" documentary on the XFL. His father, Dick Ebersol, was an original partner of Vince McMahon in the XFL. McMahon is planning to revamp the XFL for 2020.Charlie announced Tuesday that his league will come first. The Alliance of American Football plans to play a 10-week schedule with eight 50-man teams. The locations of the teams will be announced in the next three months, and the teams will be formed via regional drafts that select college players from local communities. There will be no TV timeouts, 60 percent fewer commercials, no kickoffs, and no onside kicks, with the ball automatically placed at either the 25- or 35-yard line, depending on the situation. Play clocks will be just 30 seconds and all touchdowns will need to be followed by a two-point conversion attempt.Former NFL general manager Bill Polian, former Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowler Troy Polamalu, and former USC wide receiver J.K. McKay have been brought aboard to help guide the league. The Alliance of American Football has a deal with CBS to broadcast the inaugural and championship games, as well as one marquee game per week. Ebersol said fantasy sports will be a large part of the league's promotion."Fifty-nine million people play fantasy and 20 million people play only fantasy football," said Ebersol. "We have to be able to take advantage of the people who just stop playing fantasy when the NFL season ends."Ex-NFLers Hines Ward and Justin Tuck are among those who will serve as advisers, and former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen is a financial investor."I think where businesses like this fail is that they expect to have ludicrous and unrealistic ticket and media deal projections in Year 1," Ebersol said. "Our investors here understand that it's a 7-10-year plan."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

NFL to take ball movement, going to ground out of catch rule
The NFL is prepared to take a step backward in order to move forward with more clarity regarding catches, a senior league official told Mark Maske of the Washington Post. The league's competition committee is currently working on adjusting its catch rule to no longer require a player to go to ground to maintain control of the football. It would also prevent the slight movement of the football in a player's hands being called an incompletion upon replay review."We worked backward. We looked at plays and said, 'Do you want that to be a catch?' and then we applied that to the rule," vice president of football operations Troy Vincent explained to Maske."Slight movement of the ball, it looks like we'll reverse that. Going to the ground, it looks like that's going to be eliminated. And we'll go back to the old replay standard of revers(ing) the call on the field only when it's indisputable."The rule is expected to be finalized Tuesday and brought forward for approval by team owners at the league meeting beginning Sunday.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Jacksonville Jaguars continue to overhaul their offense. The team released career Jaguars Allen Hurns and Marcedes Lewis on Tuesday.Jacksonville moves forward without Hurns and fellow receiver Allen Robinson just three seasons after they each eclipsed 1,000 yards receiving. Robinson was allowed to hit free agency this year and signed with the Chicago Bears.Hurns signed a four-year, $40.6-million deal with Jacksonville in summer 2016, but he has since been hampered by injuries, recording just 484 yards and two touchdowns in 2017.Lewis has spent his entire 12-year career with the Jags. He's averaged 20 catches over the last five seasons. The Jaguars won the AFC South this past season, and Marqise Lee and Keelan Cole led the receiving corps with more than 700 yards and three touchdowns each. This offseason, the team re-signed Lee and added Donte Moncrief and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.Hurns' market should be strong given the lackluster list of available receivers and the fact that he's proven to be explosive when healthy.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL owners to consider allowing league office to eject players
The NFL Competition Committee is set to propose a rule to owners that would allow officials at the league office in New York to eject players who commit egregious "non-football acts" in games, NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent told Jarrett Bell of USA TODAY Sports on Monday. The officials would have full access to instant replay to help determine which plays warrant an ejection. The rule could also help to ascertain which players are to blame for starting brawls after there were an unusually high number of violent in-game incidents last season."We are looking to address what’s obvious to coaches, players, and fans," Vincent said.Twenty-four of the league's owners will need to approve the measure for it to take effect.Last season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans and New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski delivered extremely dangerous hits on rookie defenders after the whistle, but neither were ejected. Both players would later receive a one-game suspension.
Tony Romo given 2000-1 odds at Corales Puntacana
To say Tony Romo is a long shot to win at his first solo PGA Tour event this weekend would be quite the understatement. The Westgate Las Vegas Superbook has given the former NFL quarterback and current CBS analyst 2000-1 odds to win the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. To put into perspective just how much of an underdog he is, the next worst odds to win belong to Hunter Mahan and Tyler Duncan at 100-1.Most of the world's top golfers are participating in the WGC-Match Play this weekend, so Romo is being brought in as a sponsor exemption due to a thin field lacking much star talent.Romo has a plus-0.3 handicap and will be competing as an amateur, but those willing to sprinkle a bit of cash on him would certainly reap the rewards if he were somehow able to pull off a win.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. I know Dak (Prescott) is watching this like, 'Yeah, he's coming.' Yeah, I am," Bennett told reporters, according to ESPN's Tim McManus. "And Alex Smith, he knows he can't run from me. I told him in the Pro Bowl."Philadelphia acquired Bennett this offseason in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, where he'd played since 2013.The 32-year-old now joins an elite group of defenders in Philadelphia that includes Brandon Graham, Chris Long, Fletcher Cox, and Derek Barnett - all of whom were integral during the Eagles' run to victory at Super Bowl LII. The veteran is coming off another impressive season with the Seahawks, in which he tormented NFC West quarterbacks by recording 8.5 sacks, 40 combined tackles, and one pass deflection in 16 games."Honestly, I don't think there's a tight end in the NFL that can block me," Bennett added. 5 revenge games set up by offseason moves
Not everyone is happy about the events that have transpired this offseason. Luckily for many of those who were traded, released, or spurned in free agency, a shot at retribution isn't far away. The moves that have taken place since the end of the 2017 season have set up five juicy revenge games for 2018. The dates have yet to be determined, but that doesn't mean we can't get hyped now.Richard Sherman vs. Seahawks (twice)(Photo courtesy: Getty Images)The Seahawks released Richard Sherman at the first sign of decline. After a seven-year marriage that included two trips to the Super Bowl and one championship, the team cut ties with its often confrontational corner following the only season in which he missed a game due to injury. It was also the first time since his rookie season that he didn't make a Pro Bowl or All-Pro team.Sherman admitted he has vengeance in his heart, and his departure from Seattle helped in "re-igniting that gasoline fire."By signing with the rival 49ers, Sherman ensured he'll see his former mates twice a year for as long as he remains in San Francisco. He'll get two opportunities in 2018 to: 1. beat former head coach Pete Carroll, whose coaching philosophy he's since criticized, 2. steal a pass from Russell Wilson, the quarterback he was rumored to have bumped heads with, and 3. go one-on-one with friend and former college teammate Doug Baldwin.Next season's Seahawks-49ers matchups will be appointment viewing.Marcus Peters vs. Chiefs(Photo courtesy: Getty Images)It's still hard to believe the Chiefs found the player with the most interceptions in the NFL since 2015 to be expendable. But such is the case with Peters, who was shipped to the Rams for a pair of draft picks. The 25-year-old is a player fueled by emotion, and he's already envisioning how he'll respond to this latest slight."I'm expecting turnovers and I'm expecting a win," Peters said of next year's meeting against K.C. in L.A.Peters and new running mate Aqib Talib against cannon-armed Patrick Mahomes and his shiny new toy Sammy Watkins (who also faces his former team). Is it September yet?Michael Crabtree vs. Raiders(Photo courtesy: Getty Images)It can't feel good to be released. It must feel even worse to be replaced ... on the same day ... by an older, more expensive option. That's Crabtree's reality. The 30-year-old was cut by the Raiders on March 15 and watched as they signed 32-year-old Jordy Nelson the same afternoon. Nelson will earn $15 million over two years from Oakland, while Crabtree signed for $21 mil over three years with Baltimore.Add to the equation that Crabtree was more productive than Nelson in 2017. He played in one fewer game and had better numbers in all major categories. We'll get to see which was the better signing when the Raiders and Ravens meet in Baltimore next season.Malcolm Butler vs. Patriots(Photo courtesy: Action Images)For two years, Bill Belichick made it known he was done with Butler. There were the failed trade talks with the Saints last offseason, then Butler's unexplained absence from Super Bowl LII. There was no coming back from sitting a player for the biggest game of the season. It's likely not a coincidence he signed with the Titans, a team stocked with former Patriots, including one at head coach. It might also be no accident he picked a team that will face Belichick and the Pats in 2018.Colts vs. Josh McDaniels(Photo courtesy: Getty Images)"The rivalry is back on."That's what Colts GM Chris Ballard declared after Josh McDaniels reneged on his agreement to become the Colts' next head coach. Instead, McDaniels ran back into Belichick's arms and returned to his role as the Patriots' offensive coordinator. The New England-Indy rivalry was once on the verge of becoming the league's best. It reached its boiling point in 2014 after the Patriots blew out the Colts 45-7 in the 2014 AFC Championship Game. That result spawned the Deflategate saga and the subsequent suspension to Tom Brady.Andrew Luck's injuries have sapped the fun out of these meetings in the years since, but it looks like we're back. The Colts will visit Foxboro next year, and both teams will be looking to run up the score.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc.
