Giants' Shurmur backs Eli Manning in introductory press conference
The biggest question facing incoming New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur is whether Eli Manning will remain the team's starting quarterback, as he's been for the past 13 seasons. The former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator appeared to give Manning a vote of confidence in his introductory press conference Friday, saying he believes the 37-year-old pivot has "years left.""He's an outstanding player and I can't wait to get to work with him," Shurmur said, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The Giants ownership and new general manager Dave Gettleman have also stated their desire to keep the veteran quarterback, though Gettleman admitted New York - which owns the No. 2 overall pick - may still draft a quarterback. As for Manning himself, he said the Giants are "the only team I ever wanted to play for and I don't want to change" in late December - and it seems he'll get his wish based on Shurmur's comments.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bills' Wood has career-ending neck injury
Buffalo Bills center Eric Wood announced Friday he has suffered a career-ending neck injury.Wood announced that the injury was discovered during his postseason physical and he'll reveal more details in a press conference Monday:
7 storylines to follow in the lead-up to Super Bowl LII
Super Bowl week is around the corner, and soon audiences will be inundated with all the coverage of the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles one can handle. There are seven storylines particularly likely to come up, so be prepared for plenty of talk about these topics:Gronk's concussionUnquestionably, the biggest storyline entering the game is whether Tom Brady's top target will be available.Rob Gronkowski was knocked out of the AFC Championship Game with a concussion and was unable to practice this week. Had the Super Bowl been scheduled for this weekend, the tight end likely would not be active.Thankfully for Pats fans, Gronkowski will be afforded two weeks to recover from the blow to the head.Eagles' underdog mentalityThe Eagles are thriving since being labeled a playoff underdog. The us-against-the-world mentality suits Philadelphia and its ravenous fan base, and appears to have given the club an edge and swagger.Super Bowl LII represents the tallest of all tasks, however. The Eagles will look to dethrone the imperious Patriots under the stewardship of a backup quarterback. It's the biggest impediment a team facing New England in the big one has ever encountered. To slay the giants, the Eagles will have to channel the Giants - the only underdog to beat the Patriots in the big game.Patriots' alleged dysfunctionThe Patriots have brushed off any talk of a rift between owner, coach, and quarterback, and the rumors have done nothing to slow the juggernaut. Nonetheless, expect the storyline to be ratcheted back up during Super Bowl Media Day.It seems everyone's looking for a crack in the Patriots dynasty. Brady and coach Bill Belichick will be forced to sit in front of a throng of media (unless they pull a Marshawn Lynch) larger than they've seen all season. Can they push aside the speculation one more time to obtain a sixth championship?Foles' goldWith one super performance, Nick Foles can potentially make a boatload of money and land himself a full-time gig in the future (he's eligible to hit free agency after the 2018 season, but could be a trade candidate with Carson Wentz expected to make a full recovery from his ACL injury). On the flip side, as Case Keenum learned last week, it takes just one poor performance to erase all the good that came out of the 2017 season. It's difficult to believe, but if Foles helps the Eagles knock off the defending champions, his story will be the one that dominates the offseason.Rumored departure of Patriots assistantsAccording to reports, Super Bowl LII will be the last time Belichick will share a sideline with coordinators Josh McDaniels and Matt Patricia. After the season ends, McDaniels is expected to become the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, and Patricia will likely depart to run the Detroit Lions. The postseason hasn't been kind to assistants moving on to head coaching gigs. Matt Nagy's playcalling came under question in his last game with the Kansas City Chiefs before he was hired as the Chicago Bears' head coach, Steve Wilks and the Carolina Panthers' defense gave up 31 points in his last game before he left to run the Arizona Cardinals, and Pat Shurmur and the Minnesota Vikings were held to seven points in his final act as Vikings offensive coordinator. He took the Giants' coaching job a day later. The Patriots have encountered a similar scenario and come out unscathed. For former lead assistants Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel, their final game with the Patriots was Super Bowl XXXIX. New England won - against Philadelphia, no less - and both men became head coaches the following season, though Weis left to coach in the college ranks. How will the Eagles deploy their pass rush?Much of the talk will center on whether the Eagles' defense can replicate the success the Giants enjoyed in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI.The Giants relied on a four-man front to pressure and rattle Brady, and the results were optimal. The Eagles employ a disruptive four-man unit of their own, one that has ramped up in the playoffs. The Jacksonville Jaguars were thought to have the best defense the Patriots have seen this season, but New England still came away victorious. Can another NFC East foe get to the Golden Boy?Is this it for Brady?Brady has expressed his intent to play well into his 40s, and who could blame him? In all likelihood, he will collect another NFL MVP award at the age of 40.Yet, if he and the Patriots go back-to-back and Brady wins a sixth championship, what else is there to accomplish? There's the allure of becoming the first team to ever win three consecutive Super Bowls, but even more enticing may be the call from home.Brady's wife, Gisele Bundchen, has tried - on more than one occasion - to convince her husband to retire. He may still be at the top of his game, but you know the saying: "Happy wife, happy life." Even superstars have to walk away at some point.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Incognito apologized, 'hugged it out' with Ngakoue
The Buffalo Bills' Richie Incognito and the Jacksonville Jaguars' Yannick Ngakoue have buried the hatchet. The two AFC Pro Bowl selections met in Orlando during preparations and cleared the air following their encounter during the wild-card round. After that game, Ngakoue accused Incognito of uttering racial slurs, leading to a league investigation."I saw him in the locker room, went up to him, said, 'Good to finally meet you,' I apologized for my part in this, and I said I hope we can get a drink here and I can get to know you better," Incognito relayed to Peter King of The MMQB. "He was cool. We shook hands and hugged it out."The Bills guard said he tried to speak with the Jaguars defensive end a day after their encounter and managed to reach him on the phone a week later."It was important for me to be able to speak man-to-man with Yannick about it. It was a reminder how powerful our words can be," Incognito said. The veteran offensive lineman is no stranger to controversy. He was accused of bullying former teammate Jonathan Martin in 2013 and spent the following season out of the league."It gets crazy out there. Real crazy. Things are said and done on the football field that are never said off the field, never seen off the field," Incognito added. "What happens on the football field very often is not a reflection of who we are as people. That's why I wanted to see him here. It's a great setting to talk as men."King was unable to reach Ngakoue for comment.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Falcons drop concession prices, sales increase
The Atlanta Falcons found out during the 2017 season that dropping the concession prices allowed fans to spend more at the stadium.Falcons owner Arthur Blank announced that despite a 50 percent decrease in concession prices, fans spent more in the inaugural season inside Mercedez-Benz Stadium than they did at the Georgia Dome."There's a huge value in delighting your fan base, to make them as happy as they could possibly be," Steve Cannon, CEO of the AMB Group said to ESPN's Darren Rovell. "We started with one of the biggest pain points and it paid off."It appears that Cannon and Blank are providing the template all teams should follow."Arthur wants other teams to do this," Cannon said. "We are an open playbook. "We're happy to show anybody how we've done it."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Eagles' Blount in 'straight enemy mode' ahead of showdown vs. Patriots
Philadelphia Eagles running back LeGarrette Blount will put friendships aside when his team faces the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.Blount won Super Bowls with the Patriots in 2014 and 2016 before signing with the Eagles in March. New England didn't make much of an effort to retain him despite him leading the league with 18 touchdowns.Although he remains friends with members of the Patriots, their bond will mean nothing on Feb 4."Straight enemy mode," Blount said, according to ESPN's Tim McManus. "Ain't no friends, no homies, none of that. We know what we're going to do; they know what they're going to do. We've got the same goal in mind. It ain't no hard feelings. It just is what it is."Blount's career has been highlighted by his stints with the Patriots, but he's no longer paying them any attention."I don't play for the Patriots anymore. I don't watch the Patriots, I don't care about the Patriots," Blount said. "I focus on what we need to do to put us in the best position to win this game. Buccaneers' McCoy lobbies for Bennett, Talib to join team
Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is heading to his sixth consecutive Pro Bowl but could use some help during the regular season. The Buccaneers slumped to a 5-11 record while the rest of their NFC South counterparts made the playoffs. Although McCoy continues to excel as one of the NFL's best defensive tackles, he campaigned for two more elite defenders to join his team."Mike Bennett, Aqib Talib. I want to get all the guys back together," McCoy said via Mark Cook of Pewter Report. "When (free agents) come into our building, whatever made you a champion, or whatever made you who you are, bring that. Show us what it takes to be a champion, show us what it takes to be successful. Because most of the guys we are going to bring in are going to be playoff players. Have been in the playoffs. Had success. Have rings. Been to a Super Bowl, or have been deep in the playoffs. Bring that. Show us what it takes to get there. We have to get there."McCoy, Bennett, and Talib played together for the Buccaneers from 2010-12. Bennett began his career with the Seattle Seahawks, featured for Tampa Bay between 2009-12, and rejoined the Seahawks to become an integral part of their defense. Talib was drafted 20th overall in 2008 by the Buccaneers before signing with the New England Patriots in 2013, then joined the Denver Broncos in 2014.A reuniting of three premier defensive players would be an excellent start for the Buccaneers, who are chasing the rest of the powerhouse NFC South.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. McMahon: XFL won't permit players to express political, social stances
The XFL wants to be about football, and only football.WWE CEO Vince McMahon announced the revival of the league Thursday and went into detail about it in an interview with ESPN's Darren Rovell.Among the biggest issues the NFL has faced over the past few years is player protests, and McMahon said the XFL won't allow its employees to take political or social stands while on the job."People don't want social and political issues coming into play when they are trying to be entertained," McMahon said. "We want someone who wants to take a knee to do their version of that on their personal time."McMahon also made it clear the XFL is focusing just as much on players' level of character as their on-field ability, saying that those with a criminal background - including DUIs - won't be accepted. This will likely rule out former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel from playing in the XFL, but that didn't stop him from almost immediately lobbying for a place:
Vince McMahon officially announces plans to resurrect XFL
A day almost everyone thought would never come is upon us, as WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon announced Thursday he will be bringing back the XFL.The league, which folded after one season in 2001, will return for the 2020 season with the schedule kicking off in late January or early February. As was the case with the previous incarnation of the XFL, there will be eight teams in the league with 40-man rosters playing a 10-game schedule. The playoff structure will be the top four teams in the league facing off in the semifinals with the winners meeting for the championship.During his press conference, McMahon failed to delve too deeply into details about the new league. There have been no discussions as to what cities will hold franchises, but McMahon admitted he wants to play the games in existing football stadiums. The original XFL was a joint venture between the WWE and NBC, with many of the broadcasters for the games doubling as WWE personalities. This version will feature no such thing, as McMahon was clear there would be no talent crossover between the two promotions, and he is not currently seeking to partner with any major broadcast networks.McMahon stressed there will be numerous differences between the XFL and the NFL but didn't specify as to what those would be. The 72-year-old did admit he wants game times much closer to two hours in length compared to the average NFL contest which is at the three-hour mark.In terms of players to fill the rosters, McMahon did say the "quality of human being is as important as (the quality of) player" and that players without a criminal past would be the ones targeted. He specifically mentioned former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow when discussing the type of player that would be welcomed in the league.McMahon will continue in his role as WWE CEO and Chairman and will not hold an outwardly public position in the new XFL. That is a stark contrast from the previous incarnation, which saw the famous executive front and center at many contests.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. 5 unforgettably awful moments from the XFL
WWE CEO Vince McMahon is reportedly getting back into pro football with what's anticipated to be a revival of the one-year wonder known as the XFL.The XFL infamously folded for myriad reasons - mainly financial losses - after the 2001 season. Its cocktail of sloppy football and pro wrestling-style bravado proved to be a dud and the league's audience cratered after a promising opening week.Related: 4 ways Vince McMahon's new football venture can ensure successHere are five of the worst (or best?) moments from the XFL:Scramble goes wrongThe XFL tried to market itself as a hardcore version of the NFL, starting with its opening play.Instead of the usual coin toss to decide possession, the XFL had two players sprint for a loose ball at midfield to earn possession. It was an interesting way to pump up the crowd and reinforce the no-holds-barred violence the league was based on, but the shine came off quickly as Orlando Rage safety Hassan Shamsid-Deen separated his shoulder during the gimmick play.Blimp crashThe XFL had its sights set squarely on taking a piece of the NFL's pie, and the league came up with a stunt to try and promote its brand on NFL time.A blimp emblazoned with the XFL logo was set to fly over an NFL game in Oakland, but much like the league itself, the aircraft went down before it could really get off the ground. The blimp crashed into an Oakland waterfront restaurant, suffering around $2.5 million in damage, according to Michelle R. Smith of ABC News.

Despite the suspension, the Patriots still made it to Super Bowl LI and beat the Atlanta Falcons in dramatic fashion."Just a nice way to remember," remarks Brady.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. What do NFL scouts look for at the Senior Bowl?
Wedged adroitly between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl is Senior Bowl week. This is an outstanding event and also an extremely valuable one for the scouting of future NFL players. There is much to learn from the practices, the game, the interviews, and the behind-the-scenes action. However, it is easy to put too much stock into this week when finalizing a grade on a prospect. Before we get into a few key things to look at from each position group, let's just give an overview. First of all, we must realize this (like the combine) is very much a grind on these draftable players. They get little sleep and basically no free time. Operating and performing well under these conditions, with teammates they have never played with, is difficult to do. That shouldn’t be forgotten, although it often is.It is important not to overreact to the first practice, either. In fact, it is a fantastic trait in a young man if he puts in the work during the week to show improvement each day.Behind the scenes is also of the utmost importance. At night, the 32 teams get to interview and interact with the players. But, more importantly, they can see if players (in a new system) can take coaching from the whiteboard to the playing field. It is also a massive advantage for the two teams that are coaching the North and South. There are many examples of teams falling in love with a certain player, with the San Francisco 49ers and Patrick Willis immediately coming to mind. There are also obviously countless unreported examples of teams scratching players off their board or dropping them dramatically.Just think, the entire Denver Broncos coaching staff, including the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, gets to spend a ton of time this week with Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen. As a result, one of these quarterbacks could end up in Denver with the fourth overall pick.Speaking of Mayfield and Allen, let's do a brief dissection of things to look for during Senior Bowl week for each respective position group.QuarterbackThis one is obviously critical. It is very different scouting the way a quarterback throws in person rather than just on tape.Seeing the ball come out of his hands carries a lot of weight in the evaluation process. But more importantly, how do his new teammates respond to each quarterback throughout the week? Are they quick to show a command of the offense? Do they learn new things well? Can they operate under center if they’ve never done it before? There is a ton to see from quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl, but don’t overreact if snaps are fumbled or if the accuracy isn’t where you want it to be. Timing in the passing game and knowing your receiver is extremely important and it is very hard to develop that in a few practices.Running BackOne-on-one pass-blocking drills are very important when analyzing running backs. Also, seeing how a back runs routes and catches the football can be telling throughout the week of practice.Kalen Ballage wasn’t used much in the passing game at Arizona State but impressed in that capacity in Senior Bowl practices. But until game day, it is tough to tell how good of a pure runner these guys are in terms of their vision, tackle-breaking ability, etc.Wide ReceiverAs mentioned with quarterbacks, completions in practice might be hard to come by, but wideouts run a lot of routes while in Mobile and much can be taken from their practices. As with every position, you see peers doing the same things on the same stage and it becomes much easier to evaluate things such as a wide receiver’s speed, body control, and burst out of his breaks. How well do these guys catch and fight for the football? As important, and something you learn early in scouting, is evaluating wide receivers against man-to-man coverage, which is utterly crucial in their ability to make the next step to the pros.Byron Pringle is a name to watch as a Senior Bowl riser for all the reasons mentioned above.Tight EndTight end is one of the tougher positions to evaluate at the Senior Bowl. Nonetheless, these guys will do plenty of blocking as well as route running. In Mobile, tight ends are often asked to do things they were not asked of in college and watching them execute out of their respective comfort zones can be helpful.Offensive LineThe best part of Senior Bowl practices is “The Pit” where we see the big men square off one-on-one. Of course, in the real world, offensive linemen have more help in pass protection than in this drill. Still, throughout the course of the week, an offensive lineman’s athletic traits and the level of technique work they need quickly becomes apparent. This may not sound like a big deal but left tackles are asked to play right tackle. Guys who have never snapped a ball in their life are asked to play center. Also, in team drills, the offensive line has zero continuity and rarely works well in unison, giving the defense a huge advantage. The smart evaluator realizes this.Defensive LineAs is the case with their offensive counterparts, much becomes exposed in “The Pit.” Do these guys have just one pass-rush move that they rely on or can they string several together? And though it is true at every position, you see small school players battling well-known names from much bigger college football programs.Nathan Shepherd from Fort Hays State is a perfect example this year. Also, edge players who have never dropped in coverage in their life will be asked to do that in Mobile. Along those lines, Andrew Brown was asked to eat up blockers and two-gap at Virginia. But in Mobile, Brown has, all of the sudden, become an attacking upfield defensive tackle.LinebackerLike running backs, without tackling involved, linebackers can be a tough evaluation throughout the week, especially in the run game. However, in today’s NFL where the passing game is king, it has become more and more important to evaluate this position as space and coverage players, which is on full display at these practices.SafetyAs is the case with the linebackers, safeties can’t wallop receivers and ball carriers. But you can get a feel for how physical these guys are and want to be. Safeties will be asked to play man coverage against tight ends and sometimes wide receivers at practice, which is something they have possibly done very little of before now.Their range is also fully on display, especially the further away from the ball these young men align. Behind the scenes, it is also very important to see what sort of communicators safeties and linebackers are and how well they recognize what an offense is trying to accomplish.CornerbackAfter reading the wide receiver section, you might have guessed the key with cornerbacks is playing true man coverage. We see many snaps of man-to-man against every receiver available and those who are successful see their stock skyrocket. North Carolina's M.J. Stewart could fit that bill this year. Cornerback is also a position where small school players often get to show what they can do against prospects from bigger schools.Special TeamsThis is crucial. Of course, it is important for kickers, punters, and long snappers, but it is of paramount importance for most of these non-linemen who won’t be first round picks. If you are a running back or linebacker drafted in the middle rounds, you must be a contributor on special teams.Since these guys were stars on their respective college team, this week is often the first time any of these players cover a kickoff or block on the punt team. How many of these running backs have made a tackle since high school? Showing up on special teams can raise the stock of a player by a round or two.Matt Williamson is a former scout for the Cleveland Browns and spent 10 years at ESPN as a scout and co-host of "The Football Today Podcast." Saints GM doesn't anticipate any problems re-signing Brees
There remains no reason to believe Drew Brees will be wearing anything but New Orleans Saints colors in 2018.Though the franchise quarterback is scheduled to become a free agent in March, both player and club hope to reach an agreement on a new contract in due time.Brees has stated his desire to return to the Saints for a 13th season and general manager Mickey Loomis said much of the same."We want him to be our quarterback, and we'll get going on that at some point," Loomis said on Wednesday, ESPN's Mike Triplett reports."He doesn't have a contract, which has happened before. We just finished our season ... We'll get to it. I'm not anticipating any big issues, so we'll see."Brees has signed three contracts with the Saints, the latest being a one-year, $24.25-million extension in 2016.Currently, Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford sets the pace, averaging $27 million per season.Though less was asked of Brees' arm this season, he led the Saints to a division title and a berth into the divisional round of the playoffs in his age 39 season."I thought he was fantastic," Loomis said of Brees. "It's beyond the numbers. It's the leadership. He's the face of our organization. He's embraced being identified with New Orleans and all those things that are good for our community and him as well."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Lynch: 49ers still working hard to sign Garoppolo long term
Negotiations continue between the San Francisco 49ers and their quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The Niners traded for the impending free agent during the season and know they've acquired their quarterback of the future. Now, the franchise is working hard to lock him up long term."We believe we found the right guy," general manager John Lynch said Wednesday on NFL Network, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. "Now, the challenge is getting Jimmy signed. We're working hard towards that. We'll see. I think he wants to be with us and we want him there. So I think it makes too much sense not to happen."Once Garoppolo suited up for the Niners, he made an immediate impact. His second throw with the team was a touchdown pass, as he took over a one-win club in Week 13 and led them to five consecutive victories to end the season.Lynch previously stated his desire to sign the quarterback on a long-term deal in his season-ending press conference, and the franchise is still making moves to secure that future some three weeks on.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. He's had a good couple of days," Elway said after Wednesday's practice in Mobile, Ala.The Broncos finished the 2017 season dead last in the AFC West with a record of 5-11. Report: Incognito, Ngakoue clear the air over alleged racial slur
The feud between Buffalo Bills guard Richie Incognito and Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue appears to be resolved. The men met and cleared the air regarding a racial slur that Ngakoue said Incognito used toward him during their AFC wild-card showdown, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.Jaguars defensive tackle Malik Jackson confirmed that he saw the two speaking before the first AFC Pro Bowl practice on Wednesday, although Ngakoue declined to comment on the details of their discussion.Related: Jaguars' Ngakoue accuses Richie Incognito of using racial slursJackson did allude to the fact that an apology was discussed, suggesting it may have been Incognito who had initiated the conversation."We (NFL players) have a huge respect for each other, and sometimes the heat of the moment can get to you, and you can say things you might not really mean or do things you might not really mean and be apologetic for it," Jackson told DiRocco. Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox said he doesn't have a favorite Super Bowl moment as he's never watched one, according to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer."I don't watch sports. Ertz raves about Gronkowski: 'He's a freak'
Super Bowl LII will feature two of the league's best tight ends, and it seems that game recognize game.Zach Ertz of the Philadelphia Eagles raved about New England Patriots All-Pro Rob Gronkowski on Wednesday, noting that he'd be a star even if he didn't play for the defending champions."The guy is a physical specimen. He's a freak. ... He'd still be producing those numbers with or without Tom Brady. He uses his body whenever he wants to get open," Ertz said, according to Tyler Dunne of Bleacher Report.Ertz was no slouch himself this season, recording 74 receptions for 824 yards and eight touchdowns and earning the first Pro Bowl selection of his career. In most games, he'd be one of the premier offensive weapons on the field.Gronkowski, however, exists in a class of his own. The Patriots standout caught 69 passes for 1,084 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games. The Patriots are looking to win their third Super Bowl in four years with Gronkowski serving as a central component of their potential dynasty, while Ertz and the Eagles seek the first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eagles' Long, Jenkins say off-field advocacy doesn't conflict with football
Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Chris Long and safety Malcolm Jenkins have been among the league's most politically and socially active players throughout the season. With the Eagles gearing up for Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots, both players say their off-field advocacy isn't getting in the way of football."Somebody asked me, 'Does this prove you can worry about your off-field engagements and effectively do your job on the field?' I think it's a great example of how players can manage time so well," Long said via ESPN's Tim McManus.Jenkins, one of the founders of the Players Coalition, noted he can do both of his jobs well, with neither conflicting with the other."That's a question that I think would best be answered by my teammates," Jenkins said. "It's easy for me to say it's not a distraction, but obviously, it has not hindered anything that we've done on the field."There's nothing that says you can't be active and love the community and fight for your community and not do your job."The Eagles have been one of the best stories of the season, both on and off the field due to Long, Jenkins, and wide receiver Torrey Smith's efforts. But right now, the trio are focused on winning the first Super Bowl in franchise history.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Belichick mum on Gronkowski's status: 'We'll put it on the injury report'
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was predictably reticent to disclose any information about tight end Rob Gronkowski ahead of Super Bowl LII.Gronkowski suffered a concussion during the AFC Championship Game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and his status has yet to be determined for the Super Bowl. The five-time All-Pro is a key component of the Patriots' offense and his health is a major storyline ahead of the big game, but Belichick sarcastically fended off questions from reporters Wednesday."We'll put it right on the injury report and that’s what we’re going to do, just like everybody else does," Belichick said, via Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. "We’ll make sure you’re first on the list, too. I don't want to hold anything back here. We’ll get that out there right away. That’s all we can do."With that, it doesn't appear Belichick will discuss Gronkowski candidly leading up to the game.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Steelers' Bell: We're a lot closer on contract talks than we were last year
The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be making headway in contract talks with running back Le'Veon Bell. While discussing a possible extension at Wednesday's AFC Pro Bowl practice, the star rusher said, "We are a lot closer than we were last year," according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.Bell said the Steelers have already made him an offer and he'd like to "move forward and get things done," according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic. He added that the Steelers haven't told him whether they'll use the franchise tag on him as a placeholder.Bell played under the franchise tag in 2017. Thomas: Browns should sign Cousins, draft on Saquon Barkley
Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey has been on the job for a little over a month, and offensive tackle Joe Thomas may already be auditioning to eventually replace him.Speaking on ESPN's "Golic and Wingo" show Wednesday morning, Thomas presented his plans for the team's offseason, which the Browns enter with over $110 million in cap space."I would actually sign Kirk Cousins, and then I would use the first and fourth pick on the best players available, probably (running back) Saquon Barkley and one of the defensive players," said Thomas.Barkley is widely regarded as a top-five pick in this year's draft. He rushed for 1,271 yards on 217 attempts and scored 23 total touchdowns for Penn State this season.Cousins passed for 4,093 yards and 27 touchdowns with 13 interceptions for the Washington Redskins in 2017. He added four rushing touchdowns, a mark he's met or exceeded in each of the past three seasons. The Redskins have the first opportunity to retain him for the 2018 season under the franchise tag, but if they decline, he's expected to be the top quarterback available in free agency.Thomas wants his team to use its abundance of cap space to sign the veteran, as opposed to taking a chance on another rookie or trading picks for another option.Should the Browns follow Thomas' plan, he envisions a quick fix for the NFL's first 0-16 team since the 2008 Detroit Lions."All of a sudden you're a heck of a lot better, immediately overnight," he said.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Falk to honor Hilinski by switching jersey number for Senior Bowl
When Luke Falk takes the field in Saturday's Senior Bowl, he'll be wearing a different number than usual in memory of his late teammate, Tyler Hilinski. The former Washington State quarterback announced Tuesday that he will wear No. 3 in the Senior Bowl to honor Hilinski, who died at age 21 on Jan. 16 in what the coroner's office ruled a suicide."We really want Tyler to be remembered and this to be talked about," Falk said, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN. "I mean, when suicide is the leading cause of death of men from 18 to 45 years old, it should be talked about. ... I feel like at times we feel like we can't express our emotions because we're in a masculine sport. And him being a quarterback, people look up to you as a leader, so he felt like he really probably couldn't talk to anybody. You know, we gotta change some of that stuff. We gotta have resources and not have any more stigma on people going through that."I just felt like (the jersey switch) is what I needed to do. He needs to be remembered. He was an amazing person and an amazing soul."Falk set numerous records during his career with the Cougars. He's expected to be a mid-to-late-round draft pick in a class that boasts other star quarterbacks including Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns officially hire Todd Haley as offensive coordinator
The Cleveland Browns officially introduced Todd Haley as the team's new offensive coordinator on Wednesday, with the veteran coach coming over from the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers.Head coach Hue Jackson said Haley's ability to adapt his schemes to best fit his players was a major attraction in the hire."We're thrilled to bring Todd Haley in as our offensive coordinator," Jackson said. "He has been a guy that has adjusted his offense to successfully complement and taken advantage of his skill set of his personnel. I've witnessed firsthand how prolific his offenses have been in the AFC North over the last six seasons."Jackson also confirmed that he will turn play-calling duties over to Haley.Haley spent the last six seasons with the Steelers, where he oversaw one of the top offenses in the league. He previously served as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 2009-11 and has coached in the NFL for 21 seasons."The Browns have a great history, great fans and deserve to have fun and experience some winning," Haley said. "There is obviously a lot of work to do in order to get there, but I've always been excited about facing a challenge."Moving from the Steelers to the Browns will certainly be a massive change for Haley, who will no longer have the talented trio of Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown, and Le'Veon Bell at his disposal. Pittsburgh ranked third in the league in yards per game last season while also finishing eighth in scoring. The Browns finished with an 0-16 record, ranked 24th in yardage, and finished last in points scored, averaging a paltry 14.6 per contest.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns' Thomas defends Jackson: 'Hue kept this team together'
Hue Jackson may not have many supporters after guiding the Cleveland Browns to a 1-31 record over his last two seasons as head coach - but one of the people in his corner is arguably the team's biggest locker room presence.Joe Thomas has spent his entire 11-year career with the team. In an article for Sports Illustrated published Tuesday, the offensive tackle insists Jackson has filled a role that no one else would have been able to, and that no one else would have wanted to.Thomas says Jackson took the job not knowing that management planned to get rid of "all their good players and current draft picks for future picks," and then had to steer a team that wasn't supposed to succeed."Hue was expected to hold the team together, develop players and get them to play hard - when everyone in the building knew the front office put us in the best position to lose. ..."In spite of playing with half a deck of cards, Hue kept the team together, kept the players focused, kept the coaches motivated, and continued to develop players through two of the worst seasons ever. I don’t think many coaches could do that," Thomas wrote. The 10-time Pro Bowl tackle says the previous two seasons have given the team the flexibility to draft elite-level talent and make a strong play in free agency - though the latter may be a tall order given the franchise's recent history. The Browns currently hold the No. 1 and No. 4 picks in April's draft, and have just over $110.5 million in effective cap space for next season.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. What should the Vikings do with their 3 impending free-agent QBs?
The Minnesota Vikings find themselves in a unique position. Fresh off an appearance in the NFC title game, they're about to be a franchise without a quarterback. The contracts are set to expire on Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater, and Sam Bradford and, in one fell swoop, the Vikings are about to go from three starting quarterbacks to none. What should the team do at the position? Who should be brought back and who should be allowed to hit free agency?Sam BradfordOf the three Vikings passers, Bradford had the best single-game performance of the season. As Minnesota's opening-day starter, Bradford shredded the New Orleans Saints by completing 84 percent of his passes, tossing three touchdown passes, and completing a 29-19 victory with a passer rating of 143. The output was a brief reminder of why Bradford was a Heisman Trophy winner in college and a former first overall draft pick. But success is fleeting for the veteran. Bradford sustained a knee injury in Week 1 that sidelined him for all but one more game this season. The injury required extensive treatment, including a scope performed by Dr. James Andrews.Bradford was afforded nearly a full season to rest the knee, and while it was reported as structurally sound, pain persisted in the area. The Vikings should view that as a red flag.Rather than rest the hopes of their franchise on Bradford's wonky knee, Minnesota should take a pass. The move: Let him hit free agencyTeddy BridgewaterBridgewater has had to rebound from a knee injury of his own but his was of a much more catastrophic nature. The 25-year-old returned from a dislocated knee and torn ACL quicker than expected and was cleared to play this season, though his only action came in the form of two incomplete passes in mop-up duty.Bridgewater is now fully healthy and eager to restart what was once a promising career. He's stated that he has designs on a starting position in the NFL, but he may have to look elsewhere for that opportunity. As with Bradford, the Vikings should exercise caution when it comes to putting a quarterback with questionable physical health at the controls of a championship-caliber team.Minnesota declined a fifth-year option on Bridgewater's contract at a time when his return was in question. Upcoming free agency allows an ideal opportunity for both team and player to head in divergent paths.Bridgewater has made many fans in the Twin Cities, thanks in part to his heartwarming story, but if he's serious about his professional future, he should pursue it somewhere where he'll be allowed a fresh start. The move: Let him hit free agencyCase KeenumAll season, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer was wary of declaring Keenum his starting quarterback. He instead offered the quarterback a 15-game audition. The results drew rave reviews in the regular season. In the playoffs, it became apparent what gave Zimmer such trepidation.Keenum threw three interceptions in two playoff games, including a pick-6 that changed the course of the NFC Championship Game.Aside from the postseason, Keenum had a career year in a relief role. And it's likely the Vikings have already gotten the best out of him.Keenum created great music with offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, the Pro Football Writers of America's assistant coach of the year, but Shurmur has taken the head coaching job with the New York Giants, leaving the Vikings' offensive future in flux.Rather than enter 2018, coming off a 13-3 season, with an entirely different crop of quarterbacks, the Vikings should offer Keenum a short-term, prove-it deal and allow him to begin next season as the starter. What Minnesota should seek is a set-up much like the Los Angeles Rams had in 2016. Draft a quarterback worthy of being the future of the franchise and let him watch Keenum until he's ready to take the reins. It's the scenario that would most allow the Vikings and its top-ranked defense an opportunity at sustained success. The move: Re-sign to short-term deal(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Broncos' Joseph: Mayfield's height isn't an issue
The Denver Broncos won't be deterred from drafting Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield because of his relative lack of height, head coach Vance Joseph indicated Tuesday."I think that's fine," Joseph said at the Senior Bowl when asked about Mayfield's 6-foot-1 frame, according to The Denver Post's Nicki Jhabvala. "You watch Drew Brees play, he's figured it out. He's a very successful quarterback. Guys figure it out. Good players figure it out. I wouldn't be concerned about that."Mayfield posted prolific numbers in college, but his size continues to serve as a topic of great debate within the scouting community. During last year's draft process, Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson said he'd want any quarterback he drafts to be at least 6-foot-2.Brees and the Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson are among the shorter quarterbacks to find great success in the NFL despite early-career criticism. The Broncos hold the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cardinals HC Wilks hopes Fitzgerald will return next season
Steve Wilks has officially been the Arizona Cardinals head coach for less than a day but he's already being asked about the team's star wideout Larry Fitzgerald. The veteran is currently deciding whether to return for a 15th season or not, and Wilks admitted during his introductory press conference that he doesn't know if Fitzgerald will return, but he certainly wants him back in the fold."I spoke with Larry. We had a very in-depth conversation. I enjoyed the conversation he and I had," Wilks said, as per Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com. "He did not express he was or wasn't coming back but we would definitely love to have him back. He is a major part of our success past, present and future - first-ballot Hall of Famer so we definitely want him back."Fitzgerald was, by far, the club's most valuable player on offense this past season, catching a whopping 109 balls for 1,156 yards and six touchdowns. Tight end Jermaine Gresham and running back Andre Ellington were tied for second on the team with only 33 catches.Injuries to Carson Palmer and David Johnson left Fitzgerald as the only trusted playmaker and the team struggled to score points despite his brilliance. Having him back in the fold next season would be a massive bonus for Wilks as he begins his tenure, but it appears the team will have to wait and see what his decision ultimately is.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc.
