Wild's Yeo after 8th straight loss: 'I'm not freaking quitting here'
If the Minnesota Wild intend to move on from Mike Yeo, it won't be due to a resignation. The head coach pulled goaltender Darcy Kuemper when the Wild got within two goals of the Boston Bruins late in a 4-2 loss on Saturday, and Yeo said that showed he doesn't plan on giving up on the team."I had a chance when (Mike Reilly) scored, you’re down two goals and we’ve got 30 seconds left, are we going to tie the game up? No. So I could have not pulled the goalie, but the message is pretty simple: I’m not freaking quitting here, and I’m not quitting on this group," Yeo told reporters postgame, according to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune."I’m going to show some fight, and I believe in the group, but (we) better start believing in each other and better start delivering."The Wild have lost eight consecutive games to fall three points out of a Western Conference playoff spot, and Yeo knows that might cost him his job.“I’m a realist," he said. "You can’t lose every game and expect to think that there’s not going to be changes. I’m operating under the assumption that I’ll be the coach tomorrow, and I know what I’m going to do and it’s going to be something different from what we’ve done."Yeo isn't concerning himself with whether or not the players have quit on him."I don’t worry about that. Those are things that are out of my control," he said. "I worry about the things that are in my control. Like I said, I know what I’m going to do tomorrow and I’m ready for that."The Wild have gone 173-132-44 in five seasons under Yeo, and have qualified for the playoffs in three of those campaigns, but they've failed to make it past the second round.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Jets expected to make 'final push' toward extending Ladd
The Dustin Byfuglien extension didn't just offer the Winnipeg Jets five more seasons of the rover's idiosyncratic contributions at a reasonable price, but ample time to negotiate the best possible trade involving Andrew Ladd, who many presumed was a casualty of the deal. But with two-and-a-half weeks left before the trade deadline, or until Ladd's fate slips from team control, the Jets are apparently focused on re-upping the captain.TSN's Gary Lawless tweeted Saturday the sense around Winnipeg is that Ladd isn't yet on the market, and that GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is expected to prepare a final push to retain the pending unrestricted free agent. He adds that the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, and Chicago Blackhawks will be among the teams interested in landing the all-situations winger.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Oilers' McLellan breaks up struggling Draisaitl, Hall
If Taylor Hall and Leon Draisaitl are to emerge from the immense shadow cast by Connor McDavid's line, it won't be together. On Saturday, at least. The previously dominant duo, who were unstoppable at times in McDavid's absence, will skate on separate units when the Edmonton Oilers attempt to make it two straight wins Saturday versus the Winnipeg Jets.Without a goal in nine contests, Hall is set to flank Mark Letestu and Zack Kassian, and welcomes the change."My play hasn't been where I want, and the production has been accordingly so," Hall said, according to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Sun. "I have to get my all-around game back, and the production will take care of itself."Meanwhile, Draisaitl has cooled significantly after bursting onto the scene akin to McDavid, but he isn't discouraged."It would be pretty unrealistic to think I'd keep that pace up," he said. "I don't think there's a player that can keep that up, but I'm still really confident, and I know I have it in me."Save for Chicago's Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin, as well as Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin in Dallas, Hall and Draisaitl have been perhaps the most productive duo in the NHL, combining for 82 points since Draisaitl's recall.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. On the Fly, NHL Roundtable: 4 trades we'd like to see
On the Fly, theScore's NHL roundtable series, continues. This week, editors Justin Cuthbert, Ian McLaren, Craig Hagerman, and Mark Millard play fantasy match maker, orchestrating trades they would like to see before the Feb. 29 deadline.Flames trade Kris Russell, Jiri Hudler to Stars for Valeri NichushkinCuthbert: Dallas makes its intentions known with a power move in the West, acquiring two rental assets from the Flames to hulk up for the stretch run.A prolific shot blocker with skills in all three zones, Russell buoys a glaring area of weakness by stepping into a top-four role on the blue line, and in turn slotting the entire rotation into correct assignments. With Hudler, Dallas has a reliable, veteran point producer who meshes well with elite talents, and has the versatility to contribute in many top-six functions.Meanwhile, the Flames receive premier value in return for two expiring deals, landing a 20-year-old former top-10 pick whose entry-level performance was undercut by injuries. Nichushkin is a manageable, affordable asset who could see his development take off with Calgary's collection of skilled young guns.Lightning trade Jonathan Drouin to Senators for Cody Ceci, Colin WhiteMcLaren: With Dion Phaneuf in the mix for the next five seasons (for better or worse), Ceci becomes somewhat expendable, especially with Patrick Wiercioch toiling in the press box and Thomas Chabot waiting in the wings.White gives Tampa a forward prospect to replace Drouin, while presenting the Senators with an NHL-ready player who could make an immediate impact in the top-six.It's a high price to pay for the Senators, but the opportunity to add a player of Drouin's potential doesn't come around every day.Oilers trade Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Justin Schultz to Islanders for Travis Hamonic, Frans Nielsen, second-round pick.Hagerman: The deal largely comes down to Nugent-Hopkins for Hamonic. The Islanders would likely want a blue line replacement, of which Schultz could serve. The Oilers could use a boost at center after losing Nugent-Hopkins, which is where Nielsen could provide value. Given Nielsen is a UFA at season's end, a second-round pick makes for a fair deal, and gives some potential long-term stability to both teams.Hamonic provides a defensive upgrade for the Oilers, and the team fits the bill as being located in Western Canada, the likes of which Hamonic demanded when he requested a trade in the season's infancy.Schultz, at the very least, acts as a defensive placeholder for the Islanders playing in a lesser role.Jets trade Andrew Ladd to Predators for Vladislav Kamenev, second-round pick.Millard: When the Predators traded from a position of strength to acquire Ryan Johansen, they made it perfectly clear they were ready to take the next step offensively. Despite the impressive addition, Nashville remains offensively challenged, Filip Forsberg and James Neal aside. If the Predators want to avoid wasting a solid defensive core in front of an aging Pekka Rinne, they must continue to address their problems up front. Jets captain Ladd represents that solution. A big body who's averaged 26 goals over a full 82-game schedule since 2010-11, he's a perfect veteran complement up front. This deal allows them to be patient with top prospect Kevin Fiala, who isn't quite ready to be a difference-maker in the NHL, and the Jets gladly take Kamenev, who though a second-round pick, is most certainly a first-round talent.Copyright © 2016 Score Media Ventures Inc. Stamkos: 'Everyone will have some answers' after trade deadline
Steven Stamkos continues to keep details of his contract negotiations - or lack thereof, as the case may be - with the Tampa Bay Lightning close to the vest.He has indicated, however, that some measure of clarity will come with the passing of the NHL's Feb. 29 trade deadline."The trade deadline is coming up in a couple weeks, I'm sure everyone will have some answers in a couple weeks when that comes," Stamkos said Thursday, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. This comes less than two weeks after Stamkos said he wanted to win with Tampa, thereby indicating a clear desire to remain with the Lightning, at least through to the end of the season.Stamkos maintained he hasn't considered what he would do if the Lightning asked him to waive his no-movement clause prior to the deadline, while also not ruling out the possibility that general manager Steve Yzerman would look to trade him so as not to lose him for nothing in free agency in the summer."I haven't even thought about that," Stamkos said. "I think the answer is, 'We'll cross that bridge at the time', and I don't think it's that time now. So I continue to come to the rink everyday as the leader that I am and the teammate that everyone in this room knows that I am, and give my best effort. I've said that since day one of training camp and that hasn't changed."He also acknowledged the lack of clarity will fuel speculation, but at the end of the day, he's intent on making sure all angles are covered before making his decision on whether to re-sign or test the waters of unrestricted free agency."Obviously a lot of people are guessing and writing stories and stuff like that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I think for me, it's been something I didn't know what to expect going into this year, I didn't know how long it was going to play out. It's my first time going through something of this magnitude in my career."Like I said before, when you have a decision like this, it takes time.
