Dimensionally speaking, yes, it is 3D. Structurally speaking however, it is a 2D arrangement. Just like a matrix.

My (quite old) parents haven't and won't. They use Picasa (the desktop application) only to organize and tag their photo collection, but they don't even have a google (or picasa) account and don't intend to. Backup is on two USB hard drives.

Hopefully, the desktop app will keep working "as is" for many years down the Windows versions line. Otherwise I'd be interested to hear from whoever tested other Windows applications doing a good-enough job at this (opensource, if possible, but not limited to)

I am not keen on moving over a TB of photos to a cloud.Other than permanent assured backup what is the gain?I used to share photos with people online. Back in the dark old days when you coded HTML by hand.

Yes users will move photos to the cloud ( or rather most people that used picasa have already moved to photos), and yes this is an attempt to remove the importance of local systems to online services.

Being that I make 100% of my living being on the grid, I cannot see myself off the grid to sustain my expected living comforts. Living off the grid is one of those romantic views that is glamed up. The reality is it's dirty and hard living.

If you lived in a rural area in Australia you would be thanking the Coalition for their decision. Many such areas now have access to 25Mbps WiMax broadband, which blows all other available options right out of the water, we're talking 3/4G, satellite and dialup, in increasing order of crappiness.

If Labor had insisted on FTTP for everyone, these guys would still be waiting for a decent broadband option.

The situation may be improving. A study showed that if they just got on with the job and installed fiber they would be on schedule. With Netflix ans the like increasing in popularity Australia needs a decent fiber network.

Many times, the "Live CD" is actually a flash drive. Ubuntu and the like can even create a separate partition on a live CD flash drive for a persistent /home storage area.

Back in 2005 Barnaby Joyce and Fiona Nash declared copper to be redundant. Given the election in Australia is coming up this could be a swinging vote election point given that no one is going to open up the borders after the sexual assaults by migrants in Germany

I see it as a new level of surveillance. Just imagine, hundreds of devices all capable of uploading data to the internet. A crime scene where they can tell where a person walked around a room by when a person was detected.

Our printers now wake up when someone stands in front of them. They can detect user identity from our work pass. Just add internet!

The read-only aspect of livecds was solved long ago. They'll use something like overlayfs [1] or unionfs to provide a transparent writable layer (using RAM via tmpfs [2]) on top of the read-only root. That way you can "modify" files or install new packages. The modifications will be copied into or made directly in the higher tmpfs layer.

The problem with the proprietary NVIDIA driver is that linking the final .ko violates the GPL-2. When you do it on your own system, it's not a problem because you aren't redistributing, and who are you going to sue: yourself? This is why there are no distros that contain a prelinked .ko. When you install it on any distro, including Ubuntu, you get a package that compiles and links it on the fly.

In the past there were livecds that would include the proprietary NVIDIA driver by downloading, compiling, and linking it while you waited. Can you not `apt-get install` it on an Ubuntu livecd still?

A Fitbit device has detected a pregnancy before the expectant mother knew. The couple posted a question online that the device was reporting an unusual heart rate reading asking for a way to recalibrate the device or for a replacement. A standard test showed that the woman was two months pregnant.

Great. Can they detect lying too? Can Fitbit results be subpoenaed and used against their owner? How long until we all have devices like these and only weird people don't know their current heart rate and daily calorie burn rate?
