Aaron Rodgers is the latest NFL superstar to suffer a serious injury, and that leaves the Green Bay Packers in a difficult spot. The Packers were one of the favorites to win the NFC, but things have changed with Brett Hundley taking over. Though Hundley might be serviceable behind center, it's hard to make the case that he can carry the Packers to the playoffs and possibly beyond. Here are three quarterbacks who potentially could, however, if Green Bay can sign or acquire them.Tony RomoRomo seems to be excelling in his new role in the broadcast booth, but a shot at a Super Bowl might be enough to convince him to return to the field. The 37-year-old grew up in Wisconsin, and if he takes over for Rodgers, it wouldn't represent a massive drop-off. Romo's been one of the league's elite quarterbacks when healthy - but that's the problem, as he's only managed to appear in five games over the past two seasons. At least that means Romo might be a fresh 37, and if the Packers can protect the veteran, he could put up very good numbers with that crop of receivers.Colin KaepernickGuess who also hails from Wisconsin? The free-agent quarterback has been looking for a suitor for months and is staying in game shape. Kaepernick's athleticism could give the Packers a different dimension on offense, and he's more than capable of creating big plays with his legs. Opposing defenses accustomed to preparing for Green Bay's air attack would have to completely change their game plans to deal with him.Packers head coach Mike McCarthy no doubt remembers Kaepernick leading the San Francisco 49ers to a victory over his team in the 2013 playoffs at Lambeau Field, so he knows what the signal-caller is capable of.Rodgers also noted in the summer that Kaepernick deserved to be on a roster, so it seems like he'd have one big supporter in the Packers organization.Eli ManningThis would require a trade, but it's not outside the realm of possibility. The New York Giants are sinking fast and appear to have stumbled into a perfect opportunity to tank and search for Manning's replacement. What better way to do that than by getting rid of a guy who can help them win games? When Manning was asked about rumors of a reunion with Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville, he made it clear that he didn't want to go anywhere - but few players would jump at the chance to join the Jaguars. He might be substantially more intrigued by a team with a real shot to win a Super Bowl. The two-time Super Bowl MVP is used to playing in cold weather and winning games at Lambeau in January. For one season, it could be a perfect marriage.(Photos courtesy: Getty Images)Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Green Bay Packers entered Sunday with one of the best records in the NFC. Their fortunes may change drastically, however, after franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone Sunday and could be out for the rest of the season.Being that we're just in Week 6, there is plenty of time for other contenders to emerge while the Packers try to keep their heads above water. So which conference rival is best suited to capitalize? The Philadelphia Eagles currently own the NFC's best record at 5-1 after a Thursday night win over the now-4-2 Carolina Panthers. The defending conference champion Atlanta Falcons haven't looked dominant this season, but still entered Sunday at 3-1.The field is wide open with, the Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Los Angeles Rams all above .500 entering the day.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Colin Kaepernick has filed a grievance under the collective bargaining agreement against NFL team owners for collusion, reports Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report.Kaepernick has hired high-profile attorney Mark Geragos and is preparing to release a statement about his grievance soon, added Freeman. The free-agent quarterback has remained unemployed since his release by the San Francisco 49ers in March and has garnered little interest from teams around the league. This has caused some to suggest he's being blackballed for his national anthem protests during the 2016 season.Kaepernick appeared in 12 games for 49ers in 2016, throwing for 2,241 yards with 16 touchdowns to four interceptions. His 90.7 passer rating ranked 17th in the league, ahead of 10 quarterbacks who were starters going into the 2017 season.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. Mazzant previously ruled to block Elliott's suspension ahead of the season. The NFL, however, announced Thursday that the injunction had been lifted on Elliott's six-game sanction, and that his suspension would be applied immediately. Jared Goff and Carson Wentz were almost buried alive by a legion of critics during their rookie campaigns. What a difference a year makes.Goff and Wentz were selected first and second overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively, and were expected to change the trajectory of their franchises instantaneously. Both evoked bilious reactions from the football community as they transitioned to the professional game - a colossal adjustment for Wentz particularly, who starred at FCS powerhouse North Dakota State. It is perhaps emblematic of the American obsession for the Next Big Thing that both players were written off entirely. Goff was a principle character in the Rams' soap opera of a season and was castigated after being thrown into an unimaginative offense authored by Jeff Fisher. Wentz starred during the first six weeks of the season, but graded out as the worst quarterback in football through Weeks 7 to 17, according to Pro Football Focus. Patience wasn't a virtue that was applied to either player, nor was circumstantial evidence. Goff and Wentz are making their critics look silly now.2016 statsPlayer Games Played Completion Percentage Yards TD INT Goff754.6108957Wentz1662.4378216142017 projectionsPlayer Games Played Completion Percentage Yards TD INT Goff1661.043522210Wentz1660.94224358Goff has been the immediate beneficiary of better coaching, with Sean McVay implementing a high-octane system that is tailored to the quarterback's strengths. The addition of standout left tackle Andrew Whitworth - arguably the NFL's best pass-blocker - has afford Goff more time to operate comfortably in the pocket, and the Rams are the league's second-highest scoring offense (30.4 points per game) as a result. The idea that Goff should be displaced after his first year was ludicrous and he's showing rapid improvement during his second season.

Ben Roethlisberger has looked a shell of his former self over the first five games of the season, culminating in a humiliating five-interception performance in Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, according to personnel executives from four teams the Pittsburgh Steelers have faced this season, the veteran pivot's game hasn't slipped significantly."Maybe a little bit of foot speed (is gone) - in the past, he was a really good scrambler. But not anything skill-wise," one exec told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The NFL season may be only five weeks old, but in a 16-game campaign, it doesn't take long for teams to start running into must-win matchups. Here are three teams facing pivotal contests in Week 6.Oakland Raiders (2-3)vs. Los Angeles ChargersThis wasn't how it was supposed to go for the much-hyped Raiders. Sitting third in the AFC West behind the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs and the resurgent Denver Broncos, the Raiders are scrambling for answers on both sides of the ball. The return of Derek Carr - who was expected to miss anywhere from two to six weeks due to a back injury, but will ultimately miss just one game - should give the offense a boost. Still, Oakland can't expect the quarterback to solve all its offensive woes. Even with him under center in Week 3, the Raiders managed a paltry 128 yards of total offense.Importantly, the Raiders can lift their divisional record to 1-1 by taking down the struggling Chargers. However, while Oakland beat Los Angeles twice in 2016, the Raiders did so by a combined six points. Carr and Co. can't fall into the trap and crush their hopes of capturing a wild-card spot.Miami Dolphins (2-2)at Atlanta Falcons(Photo courtesy: Action Images)If any team needs a win and a strong offensive performance, it's the Jay Cutler-led Dolphins. While few believed Cutler would be a dramatic upgrade on the injured Ryan Tannehill, most assumed the veteran pivot would play solidly enough for Miami to make a playoff push - especially in Adam Gase's system, in which he previously excelled.Instead, the Dolphins have scored an embarrassing 22 points over the past three games. The good news is that the Patriots aren't running away with the AFC East (yet), and given the severe lack of good teams in the conference, the Dolphins aren't out of the wild-card race.Another loss might not be fatal, but another offensive dud would kill any lingering hope of a rebound.New Orleans Saints (2-2)vs. Detroit LionsBack-to-back wins have kept the Saints on life support following two defeats to start the season, and the Carolina Panthers' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday means the division remains up for grabs. But New Orleans' margin for error for the rest of the year is small, with the Atlanta Falcons at 3-1 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 2-2. In their next four games after facing the Lions, the Saints have to travel to Green Bay and Buffalo, and play a tough divisional game at home against the Bucs. They simply can't afford a slip-up against Detroit. The Saints have the firepower to outduel a hobbled Matthew Stafford, especially with their improving defense, and thus avoid falling into a terminal 2-3 hole.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. In Derrick Henry, the Tennessee Titans have one of the league's most punishing running backs, capable of taking over games and crushing the will of defenses. One problem: In the past two games, both of which the Titans lost, Henry has just 10 carries, including a four-touch outing last week against the Miami Dolphins. While Henry remains the backup to DeMarco Murray, Tennessee knows it needs to get one of their most explosive weapons more chances to make an impact."You sit down and look at your sheet and you say, 'Wow. He had four touches,'" offensive coordinator Terry Robiskie said Thursday, according to Jason Wolfe of the Tennessean."You've just got to find a way to put the ball in his hands. I don't know where those touches are going to come from, but they're going to come from somewhere, we hope. We're going to find a way to put the ball in his hands a couple more times."In fairness, the Titans were without Marcus Mariota in Week 5, and the blowout loss to the Houston Texans in Week 4 forced Tennessee away from its rushing attack.Still, Henry emphasized his talents in Week 2's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars by rushing for 92 yards and a touchdown on just 14 carries while Murray dealt with a hamstring injury. If the 2-3 Titans are to save their season, they'd be smart to fulfill their promise to get Henry more work, starting in Monday's key divisional game versus the Indianapolis Colts.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. theScore's Jack Browne breaks down five of the most important in-game matchups ahead of Week 6.Travis Kelce vs. Ryan ShazierKelce has always been an elite tight end, but he's seemingly taken his game to another level in 2017, aided by the MVP-type play of Alex Smith and opponents focused on stopping rookie phenom Kareem Hunt.Only Rob Gronkowski is averaging more yards per game than Kelce, but the Kansas City Chiefs pass-catcher faces a stiff test in the form of Ryan Shazier, one of the league's most athletic inside linebackers. While quarterbacks have shied away from testing Shazier in coverage this season, Smith will continue to rely on his favorite target, especially in the red zone. It could be risky, however, as Shazier has a penchant for forcing turnovers. The winner of this matchup will likely determine the victor of this standout conference game.DeSean Jackson vs. Justin BethelWhile Patrick Peterson versus Mike Evans is the heavyweight matchup in the contest between the Arizona Cardinals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jackson's battle with No. 2 cornerback Bethel could swing the game. The speedy wide receiver finally clicked with Jameis Winston in Week 5 after an inconsistent start to his Bucs career, catching five passes for 106 yards, and he'll be relied upon to carry the passing game if Peterson blankets Evans. The Cardinals' star cornerback has been locking down his opponents all season long, so it's unlikely Evans will have a massive impact.Though Bethel's been solid this season, he has a tendency to get burned for big plays. Few players in the league are capable of creating more game-changing plays than Jackson, and the gunslinging Winston won't be able to resist taking deep shots when given the slightest opportunity.Leonard Fournette vs. Aaron DonaldFournette announced his arrival as a dominant force in the NFL by humiliating the Pittsburgh Steelers' run defense in Week 5, rushing for 181 yards and two touchdowns, including an epic 90-yard touchdown scamper. The Los Angeles Rams' run defense isn't much better than Pittsburgh's, but it does have Donald, who remains one of the most disruptive defenders in the league despite a lengthy offseason holdout.Donald has a league-high four tackles for loss in the past three weeks and will need to consistently force his way into the backfield to disrupt the downhill style of Fournette. The rookie running back is the crux of the Jaguars' offense, but he's been a non-factor as a receiver. That means Donald and Co. can focus on stopping him between the tackles, forcing Jacksonville to generate offense elsewhere.Myles Garrett vs. Deshaun WatsonThe battle between two superstar rookies should headline the Houston Texans' matchup with the Cleveland Browns. Garrett has only played in one game this season, but the pass-rusher showed why he was tapped as a generational talent by recording two sacks in his debut.Meanwhile, the Houston Texans' offensive line has solidified after a disastrous start, partly thanks to the quick thinking and pocket mobility of Watson. He's looked sensational over the past two games, scoring nine total touchdowns. But like any rookie, Watson can be made to look as such when faced with pressure. Not only does Garrett have the skills to consistently move Watson off his spot, he has the speed and agility to run down the first-year pivot and reduce the number of broken plays turned into big gains.Jordy Nelson vs. Xavier RhodesNelson didn't look like himself in Week 5 due to a back injury and was on the sidelines for the dramatic last-minute game-winning drive. The Green Bay Packers receiver should be good to go against the Minnesota Vikings, but even when he's healthy, Rhodes has had his number:

Although the New York Giants remain without their first win, Eli Manning isn't planning on going anywhere.Manning, along with Odell Beckham Jr., have faced the brunt of criticism for the team's unexpected 0-5 start, and many have been quick to completely write the quarterback off this fall. With former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin as the executive vice president of football operations for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Blake Bortles failing to impress in the AFC South, some have speculated about a potential trade.Manning isn't buying that notion, nor does he encourage it."I've not heard [the Jacksonville speculation], I've not felt it, not thinking about it," Manning said Thursday to Bob Glauber of Newsday. "I don't want to play anywhere else. I love this team, love this organization, and I want to be here."Manning is one of the most decorated players in franchise history, steering the Giants to two Super Bowl victories over the New England Patriots after being traded to the team on draft night in 2004.With his career admittedly in its latter stages, Manning doesn't want to go anywhere, despite the Giants remaining arguably the league's most disappointing team this year."That's always the goal," Manning said. "You always want to come to a place and make an impact, stay in one spot, and I think that’s always the mindset. I hope that will be the case. Obviously, in this league, things can change, and if we have to make decisions, we’ll figure it out."Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The San Francisco 49ers released four-time All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman on Friday, a move that reverberated around the league. When healthy, the 29-year-old is still among the league's best inside linebackers, but the 49ers are now focused on building for the future, and 2017 first-round pick Reuben Foster has taken Bowman's spot. So, without further ado, here are five teams that should try to acquire the veteran linebacker.Chicago BearsBowman ought to seamlessly fit into the Bears' defensive scheme, reuniting with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, with whom he excelled under during their shared tenures with the 49ers. After Jerrell Freeman suffered a pectoral injury and a concussion in Week 1, there has been an absence of leadership among the defense and Bowman would slide in perfectly. Danny Trevathan could certainly use another veteran linebacker alongside him, and Bowman is an upgrade over Nick Kwiatkoski. This ought to be a no-brainer.Dallas CowboysThe Cowboys' fragility at inside linebacker ensures the position remains a perpetual need. Jaylon Smith is playing in his first professional games after recovering from a tortuous ACL injury suffered in college, Sean Lee hasn't played a complete season during his eight-year career, and Anthony Hitchens made his season debut just last weekend. Although Bowman's recent injury history won't necessarily inspire confidence, he will be readily available at this juncture for a team looking to save their season.Los Angeles ChargersLos Angeles has surrendered a league-worst 161.2 rushing yards per game and desperately need an upgrade at inside linebacker. Kyle Emanuel ranks 49th among inside linebackers according to Pro Football Focus, Korey Toomer is a journeyman out of place, while Hayes Pullard may be the worst player at his position in the NFL. Jatavis Brown is also struggling after a promising rookie season. Bowman wouldn't have to move very far, either, and would inject veteran stability into an erratic group.New York Giants General manager Jerry Reese is allergic to inside linebackers - with Jacquian Williams the last one Reese selected, during the sixth round of the 2011 draft - and it's certainly revealing itself to be a major fault during the 2016 campaign. The Giants rank 29th in rushing defense and are trotting out the near-replacement level pairing of B.J. Goodson and Keenan Robinson, who rank 54th and 70th by Pro Football Focus, respectively. Reese's philosophy has put the Giants in a great position for most of his decade-long tenure but it's backfired this year. It's time to rectify his gross negligence at linebacker.Oakland Raiders If you can name Oakland's starting inside linebackers, you're either a card-carrying member of Raiders Nation or need some sleep. Cory James and Marquel Lee are holding the Raiders' defense back and Bowman would be a monumental upgrade at the position. Throw in the fact that Bowman could probably take all his possessions with him on the BART line from San Francisco to Oakland, and it's a move both parties ought to strongly consider.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. The San Francisco 49ers released four-time All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman on Friday.San Francisco tried to field trade interest for Bowman with multiple teams reportedly interested in the veteran, but no deal came to fruition."NaVorro gave his heart and soul to this team for the last eight years, and for that we are all extremely grateful," 49ers general manager John Lynch said via the team's website. “During that time, NaVorro was a key component of one of the best teams in the League and his passion for the game allowed him to quickly become a favorite of our Faithful fans. Thursday evening, Kyle and I met with NaVorro, and from our conversation it became evident that going in different directions was best for both him and our team. Although NaVorro may be moving on, he will always be looked at as one of the great players to wear the red and gold. We wish him and his family great success."Bowman's playing time was reduced during a Week 5 loss to the Indianapolis Colts and he wasn't happy about it, noting that he's a "team player."The 29-year-old was named to three Pro Bowls and was one of the defining linebackers of his generation. However, he suffered devastating ACL and MCL injuries during the 2013 NFC Championship Game and missed the entire 2014 season while recovering.Bowman also suffered a torn Achilles, ending his 2016 campaign. The 49ers selected linebacker Reuben Foster in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft with the ostensible aim of replacing Bowman, and it seems the veteran became expendable as a result.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc. DeAndre Levy spoke in front of the Democratic members of the House Energy & Commerce Committee Friday and voiced frustration over a "football culture" which prevents NFL players from taking head injuries seriously."It bothered me that not one player knew anything about the CTE research. We see the headlines, but unless we're cued in and paying attention to it, I don't think a lot of guys will be able to link them," Levy said."I think we're aware that we'll have bad shoulders, we'll have bad backs, we'll have bad knees, I think a lot of us kind of know that that's par for the course."For the longest (time), a concussion to us was just a headache. A headache that if you could play through, you're good, once it's gone, it's gone. I think a lot of guys still have that mentality and still think about it. And I think there's still a good portion of guys that don't want to think about it, because honestly, it's frightening."Levy said players "think it's normal" and would often joke in locker rooms about how forgetful they all are at home with their partners. He would often notice his mood change for reasons he couldn't explain, but it would feel like he was in a "fog" or a "funk."“It’s frightening to consider that in five or ten years down the line, you could become a completely different person,†said Levy.Copyright © 2017 Score Media Ventures Inc.
