Report: Hunt requests trade from Browns
Kareem Hunt wants out.The star running back has requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns, sources told Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot. The Browns reportedly have no intentions of moving Hunt, who's looking for a new contract extension.Hunt reportedly skipped team drills at training camp for two straight days, but the Toledo product participated in those drills again Sunday, seemingly ending his "hold-in," according to Cabot.Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski doesn't think the Hunt situation is a distraction for his team."We're working. No distraction," Stefanski said before Sunday's practice, according to 92.3 The Fan's Daryl Ruiter."I would tell you, respectfully, we really do focus on what we can control. I understand that there are things that happen that certainly get attention, and that's okay. This is a great game. I know our fans love this game and follow every step along the way, but for us, we really are focused on trying to get better. We're not where we need to be, and we got a lot of work to do, so that's what we're focusing on."If our players are healthy, they practice."Hunt, who inked a two-year, $10-million extension with the Browns in 2020, appeared in only eight games last season, registering 386 yards and five touchdowns on 78 carries. He also caught 22 passes for 174 yards.Hunt enjoyed his best campaign with Cleveland in 2020. He played all 16 games that year, amassing 1,145 scrimmage yards and 11 touchdowns. The former Pro Bowler began his career with Kansas City Chiefs after being drafted in the third round in 2017. The Browns signed Hunt as a free agent in 2018.Nick Chubb, who's earned Pro Bowl berths in the last three seasons, currently headlines Cleveland's running back depth chart.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Commanders' Rivera not 'overly concerned' about Wentz's accuracy issues
Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz has dealt with accuracy issues at training camp, but head coach Ron Rivera is confident the signal-caller will get his game back on track soon."(His accuracy) is a lot better than you give him credit for, just because of the way things happen in practice," Rivera said Saturday night, according to Sam Fortier of The Washington Post. "There's a lot of little nuances that we see and that we look at and get to review. Yeah, there are some inaccuracies, but it's nothing that we are overly concerned about."Wentz has faced criticism for his inaccuracy at practice, but he's had success with deep throws, Fortier adds. A video shows Wentz missing some easy throws during Washington's workout at FedEx Field on Saturday:
Report: Browns' Hunt skipping team drills, seeks contract extension
Cleveland Browns running back Kareem Hunt is staging a partial "hold-in" at training camp as he seeks a contract extension.Hunt skipped team drills for a second consecutive day Saturday as he pursues a contract extension, sources told CBS Sports HQ's Josina Anderson. It's believed that the veteran tailback's absence from the team portion of practice isn't health-related.The 27-year-old informed the club multiple times that he currently plans to only participate in individual drills, according to Anderson.Hunt also apparently told team members he would like to either get paid or welcome a trade. However, it now appears Hunt would prefer to remain in Cleveland with a new deal that improves his compensation, Anderson reports."Hopefully, I can be here long-term," Hunt said in June. "We'll see what God has in plan for me, that’s all I can say."Hunt signed a two-year, $20-million contract extension that included $5.5 million in guarantees with the Browns in 2020, according to Over the Cap. He is entering the final year of his current deal, which is worth up to $6.2 million in 2022.The former Pro Bowl halfback began his career with Kansas City Chiefs, who drafted him in the third round in 2017. The Browns signed Hunt as a free agent after the Chiefs cut him in 2018.The Willoughby, Ohio, native accounted for 560 scrimmage yards (386 rushing, 174 receiving) and five total touchdowns in eight games last season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bears' Jenkins: Rumors of clashing with coaches 'totally not true'
Chicago Bears offensive tackle Teven Jenkins refuted talk that he's been at odds with the team's coaching staff amid trade rumors."Just one thing, mainly, that I was clashing with coaches," Jenkins said Saturday, according to ESPN's Courtney Cronin. "That was totally not true, and I just wanted to tell everybody that you don't have to believe everything that somebody says. It's just how it is."Last week, it was reported that the Bears were holding trade talks around the 2021 second-round pick. Friction with the new regime was a rumored reason for the trade discussions.Jenkins has spent much of his early NFL career on the sideline. He missed a large part of last season with a back injury and was absent for seven consecutive practices with an undisclosed injury before returning Saturday. The 24-year-old declined to share any details of the recent injury that kept him off the practice field in training camp. He assessed that he's "around 90%" but added he should be back to normal shortly, according to Cronin.Jenkins is seeking to reclaim a starting role after Larry Borom surpassed him at right tackle.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rhule: Panthers won't make QB decision before 2nd preseason game
Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said the team won't make a "major decision" on any position - especially Carolina's quarterback competition - until after its Aug. 19 preseason game against the New England Patriots."The Patriots week is a true litmus test for us," Rhule said, according to ESPN's David Newton. "That will really show us where guys are."Additionally, Rhule hasn't ruled out delaying a decision between signal-callers Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield if neither passer has separated himself following the New England contest.Mayfield began the team's scrimmage Saturday with the first-team offense. However, both Mayfield and Darnold received equal reps with the first- and second-team units throughout practice. Those snaps included an interception from each passer, which displeased Rhule."We've got to protect the football," the Panthers coach said.Despite the turnovers, Rhule said both veteran quarterbacks did well overall in making explosive plays and orchestrating long drives.Darnold began last season as Carolina's starter after the team acquired him in a trade with the New York Jets. He posted a 4-7 record in 2021 across 11 starts. The Panthers acquired Mayfield in July from the Cleveland Browns. He was inconsistent during his first four seasons in the league, although he threw for 14,125 yards, 92 touchdowns, and 56 interceptions.Matt Corral and P.J. Walker also round out Carolina's quarterback position.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Ex-Patriots O-lineman rear-ended car to avoid Belichick's wrath
The fear of facing an angry Bill Belichick can apparently make players do some crazy things.Former New England Patriots offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger admitted this week on "The Hartman And Rich O Show" that he once intentionally rear-ended another vehicle to cover up being late for a team meeting.Ohrnberger, the Patriots' fourth-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, said his phone had died overnight, causing him to sleep in."I'm gonna be 10 minutes late for this day, so I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, what do I do?" Ohrnberger recalled. "And I have this sinking feeling in my stomach like, I'm gonna get cut. Like he's not going to have me on this football team come tomorrow. What do I do?"Ohrnberger then noticed a "dinged up" church van in front of him and had the idea to rear-end it with his Chevy Tahoe."I'm gonna hit this car because it's better to, whatever, pay the insurance or like peel off this guy a couple hundred bucks than embarrass myself being late for this Patriots team meeting," Ohrnberger said. "So I rear end this church man. I hit this poor old man who, by the way, was like minutes from being 100 years old."This guy with a long white beard - I mean, it was Father Time - comes creeping out of the front seat of this church van. And I didn't hit him hard, I like cruised into him enough that it dented my bumper so I had proof. So I had visual evidence that I actually got into a car accident."
Raiders' McDaniels downplays Jacobs' surprising HOF game appearance
Lead running backs almost never play in the preseason due to fear of injury, but the Las Vegas Raiders weren't afraid of putting Josh Jacobs on the field during Thursday's Hall of Fame game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. For new Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels, Jacobs' surprising first-quarter appearance was about getting the rusher some reps."I always think it's good for backs to carry the ball in the preseason," McDaniels said, according to NFL.com's Kevin Patra. "There's a lot of things that happen when you're getting tackled and hit that you can't simulate in practice. I think all our guys had the ball tonight."Jacobs played two drives Thursday, finishing with 30 yards on five rushing attempts to go along with two catches for 14 yards. The 24th overall pick in the 2019 draft is entering the last year of his rookie contract. Las Vegas declined the fifth-year option on his deal in April. The 24-year-old rushed for 1,150 yards (4.8 per attempt) across 13 games as a rookie but hasn't sustained that production. He put up 1,065 yards and 12 scores in 15 contests in 2020, though he averaged only 3.9 yards per carry.Jacobs registered 872 yards (four per attempt) and nine touchdowns on the ground last year to go along with 54 catches for 348 yards.Veterans Kenyan Drake and Ameer Abdullah, as well as 2022 fourth-rounder Zamir White, are also competing for snaps in the Raiders' backfield. White posted a solid outing in Thursday's 27-11 victory over the Jaguars, amassing 74 yards on 14 touches.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Shanahan loves 'intensity' at 49ers practice but upset with fights
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan isn't happy with the fights at his team's practices this week.Shanahan had to halt practice twice Tuesday after players threw punches at each other, including star linebacker Fred Warner and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Though the 42-year-old coach says he appreciates his players' toughness, he thinks they've crossed the line."I want everyone challenging each other," Shanahan said Friday, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "I don't care how much crap each other talks; I don't care how close they get to fighting. They can do whatever they want to get themselves to be as intense as they want and bring the best out of each other, which happens a lot that way. And it's the same on the field."But once you throw a punch, you get ejected, or you get a penalty. And we pride ourselves on, I want people to be irritants, I want people to get as close as they can to all that stuff. I want people to get right on the line where they're about to black out, but you can't black out on the football field, or you cost your team."The biggest fight this week was between Warner and Aiyuk. It began after a late hit by Warner sent wideout Marcus Johnson into the concussion protocol, Wagoner notes."I love the intensity of it," Shanahan added. "I don't think you have to fight to be intense, though. Scuffles are scuffles, but then they lead to other stuff. I think that's why we've got a guy in protocol because he took an unnecessary shot on someone, which led to the big fight, and then we had a bunch of haymakers and stuff thrown in there, which only break hands."Warner believes his toughness against Aiyuk will help the pass-catcher improve ahead of his third NFL season."Specifically with Brandon, I chose him out," Warner said last week. "I think he's ready to make that next step into playing at an elite level."Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Kupp doesn't put himself among NFL's top 5 WRs
Few around the NFL would rank Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp outside the top five players at his position. But it looks like Kupp himself is part of that selective group. On a recent appearance on the "I AM ATHLETE" podcast, Kupp ranked Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, Stefon Diggs, Ja'Marr Chase, and Odell Beckham Jr. as the top wideouts in the league.Beckham is the biggest surprise in Kupp's top five. Although Beckham was a key member of the Rams' championship run last season, he hasn't made the Pro Bowl since 2016 and remains unsigned this year as he recovers from a torn ACL. Los Angeles has shown interest in bringing him back for 2022, though.Other star players this offseason have also ranked football's best wideouts. That includes Jefferson, who said he'll top Adams as the best receiver in the league after the 2022 season. Jefferson added last week that he's better than Kupp, per Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. However, Kupp seemingly had a different stance Wednesday when he "respectfully" disagreed with Jefferson ranking himself ahead of him.Kupp is coming off one of the greatest seasons in NFL history. The 29-year-old first captured the receiving triple crown during the regular season after leading the league with 145 catches, 1,947 yards, and 16 touchdowns. He then earned Super Bowl MVP honors after helping the Rams win their first title in 22 years.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Steelers, Diontae Johnson strike extension reportedly worth $36.71M
The Pittsburgh Steelers extended wide receiver Diontae Johnson on Thursday, the team announced. The two-year extension is worth $36.71 million, a source told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. It reportedly includes $27 million guaranteed and will pay Johnson $19 million in the first year.Johnson, who's now under contract through the 2024 season, can earn up to $39.5 million with incentives, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter."I felt it in my gut it was the right move for me and my family," Johnson said. "I am just glad to get back to work. I love being a Steeler. I love it here. Just being around my teammates, the atmosphere, the energy they show every day. I feel like I made the right choice to continue to be here for a long time."The 26-year-old's new $18.35-million average annual salary ranks 17th among wide receivers, per Spotrac.Johnson, a third-round pick in 2019, was entering the last year of his rookie contract. He reported to training camp but decided to hold in, only participating in select drills as the two sides discussed an extension. The Toledo product, who's coming off a career year, has led Pittsburgh in targets each season since entering the NFL. He also finished 2021 with a team-high 107 receptions, 1,161 yards, and eight touchdown catches in 16 games. The Pro Bowler has caught 254 passes for 2,764 yards and 20 touchdowns across three campaigns with the Steelers.Johnson adds to what's been a lucrative year for receivers from the 2019 draft class:

Report: Stafford dealing with 'bad' elbow tendinitis
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has been limited throwing in practice due to a tendon issue in his right elbow, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Rapoport described the injury as "bad tendinitis" and added that Stafford had a procedure to manage the issue during the offseason, though it didn't get the passer where he wanted to be.Stafford didn't throw in Wednesday's session. Rams head coach Sean McVay said Monday that the veteran signal-caller was "still feeling a little bit of pain" entering this week, according to The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue.McVay said that Stafford not throwing Wednesday wasn't a setback for him."It's consistent with what's been going on," McVay said. "When you really look at the totality of it, wanted to try to have him operate in as little pain as possible. I think that anytime that you've played as long or are as tough as he is, I don't know if you're ever truly 'pain-free,' but the goal would be for Sept. 8 and looking towards 17 games (and) hopefully some games after that."Stafford didn't throw at the Rams' organized team activities after having an anti-inflammatory injection in his arm in the spring, Rodrigue adds."We're really taking it a week at a time, really a couple of weeks," McVay said. "Don't expect him to do anything in these team settings for this block or the next three days, next week. ... This is part of the plan that we feel like is in his best interest."In his first year in Los Angeles, Stafford attempted 601 passes across 17 games in the regular season before making 140 attempts in four playoff games. Kingsbury addresses Brown's arrest: 'He needs to be better than that'
Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury addressed on Thursday the incident involving wide receiver Marquise Brown, who was arrested and charged with criminal speeding on Wednesday morning in Phoenix."He knows he needs to be better than that," Kingsbury said, according to Paul Calvisi of 98.7 Arizona Sports.Kingsbury added that Brown was going from his house to the stadium when police stopped him, according to team reporter Darren Urban."We are still working through the details of it all. ... Unfortunate incident, you can't be doing that, and we wanted to get him back involved (on the field)," the 42-year-old coach said.Brown practiced with the Cardinals on Thursday, though his participation was limited. The 25-year-old is nursing a hamstring injury, but Kingsbury expects the wideout to be a full-go soon."We had hoped maybe this weekend, but we're going to be smart. When he's back, I want him full speed and confident," Kingsbury said Wednesday before the news of Brown's arrest, according to Tyler Drake of 98.7 Arizona Sports.Arizona acquired Brown in a trade from the Baltimore Ravens in April in exchange for a first-round pick. The 2019 first-rounder racked up 91 receptions for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games with Baltimore last season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NFL Hall of Fame Game betting preview: Raiders favored over Jaguars
Football is back ... sort of.Thursday's Hall of Fame Game (8 p.m. ET) between the Raiders (-2.5) and Jaguars will officially kick off this year's preseason calendar and mark the first taste of NFL action since the Rams won the Super Bowl back in February. There won't be nearly as much intrigue - or talent - on the field for this one, but that doesn't mean there isn't value betting on this week's exhibition.Like with any preseason game, though, it pays to be prepared. Here's what you should know before betting Thursday's preseason opener:Who's playing? This should always be the first question any bettor asks before wagering on the NFL preseason, where starters rarely play more than a few drives, if that. And in the case of Thursday's exhibition, we may not see many starters at all.The Jaguars have already announced that starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence won't play in this one, while backup quarterback C.J. Beathard is still nursing a groin injury that will keep him out of action, too. That means former sixth-round pick Jake Luton will get the starting nod on Thursday.Luton was sharp in preseason action in 2021, completing 77.4% of his passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns, but his regular-season numbers (54.5%, 2 TD, 6 INT) cast a little more doubt about what we should expect against the Raiders. His supporting cast is also suspect - Travis Etienne and James Robinson won't play on Thursday, which will put the onus on Luton and fourth-stringer Kyle Sloter to air it out with a new-look receiving corps. On the other side, there's no indication whether Derek Carr - who sat out the entire 2021 preseason - will suit up for the Raiders, but it could make sense to get some reps with new star wideout Davante Adams in the first game under new coach Josh McDaniels. Las Vegas also boasts a deeper roster than Jacksonville - especially at quarterback, where former starters Jarrett Stidham and Nick Mullens slot behind Carr on the depth chart. What about past results? If you take a look at previous Hall of Fame Game results, you'll notice one thing right away: there hasn't been a lot of offense:SEASONRESULT2021Steelers 16 Cowboys 32019Broncos 14 Falcons 102018Ravens 17 Bears 162017Cowboys 20 Cardinals 182015Vikings 14 Steelers 32014Giants 17 Bills 132013Cowboys 24 Dolphins 202012Saints 17 Cardinals 102010Cowboys 16 Bengals 7Since 2010, the average Hall of Fame Game has produced a combined 28.3 points, and only one team has even surpassed 20 points in that span. Unsurprisingly, the under has cleaned up in recent years, boasting a 7-2 record in those nine games. That follows a trend across the preseason as a whole. Last year, 17 of the first 20 preseason games went under, including that 16-3 win by the Steelers in the Hall of Fame Game. Pittsburgh became the first underdog to win this game outright in five years, but favorites are still riding a 12-4 record straight-up and a 9-5-2 mark against the spread in the last 16 Hall of Fame Game matchups. This game opened at pick 'em before some money on the Raiders nudged the line in their favor, but the real story is the total (30.5), which was as high as 33.5 before moving to a historic low. If it holds, this total would be the lowest in a preseason game in 18 years - which shouldn't come as any surprise given the low-scoring nature of this exhibition every year.Where's the value?Look, any wager is inherently a gamble, but that's especially true when betting on meaningless preseason football. Bettors care more about the final result than many of the coaches or players do, and we're lucky they don't end these games early like they do at times in MLB spring training. That said, it's felt an awful lot like these offenses have shut it down early over the last few seasons, and I'm not expecting a dramatic shift with both sides expected to sideline key offensive players early in this one. Sure, this total is historically low, but extreme totals have fared well in the regular season in recent years, and it's the clearest value on the board for Thursday's opener.C Jackson Cowart is a sports betting writer at theScore. Cowboys sign Barr to 1-year contract
The Dallas Cowboys signed former Minnesota Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr to a one-year contract, the team announced Wednesday.Dallas didn't disclose the deal's financial terms, but Barr received a base salary of $2 million and an additional $1 million in incentives, reports Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. The Cowboys indicated they were looking to add some experience to their linebacker group in the offseason by chasing Bobby Wagner, who ultimately signed with the Los Angeles Rams.Barr spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Vikings after they drafted him ninth overall in 2014. He was a key cog in Minnesota's consistently strong defense over that time, earning four straight Pro Bowl appearances from 2015-18.The veteran boasts career marks of 495 total tackles, 17.5 sacks, and eight forced fumbles.Barr will reunite with former Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards, who's now a defensive assistant in Dallas.Reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Micah Parsons, veteran Leighton Vander Esch, and second-year pro Jabril Cox lead the NFC East club's linebacker unit. However, Dallas needed to reinforce the position with Vander Esch's long injury history and Cox working back from an ACL tear. Barr's addition should also allow Parsons to continue to split time as a pass-rusher.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Saints' Penning kicked out of practice for fighting
The New Orleans Saints ejected offensive tackle Trevor Penning from practice on Wednesday after he got into a fight with teammates for a third consecutive day, according to Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith.Penning got into an altercation with defensive lineman Malcolm Roach, resulting in both players being sent to the locker room. The Saints' 2022 first-round pick sparred with Payton Turner and Taco Charlton on Monday, and he drew the ire of defensive back J.T. Gray and defensive lineman Scott Patchan on Tuesday. The Northern Iowa product was recognized for his aggressive play leading up to the draft this spring. However, head coach Dennis Allen has apparently grown irritated with some of Penning's antics."We don't have time for that," he told reporters, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett. Allen also noted that the team has to learn to work together.Penning has been unapologetic about his style of play, insisting that it's merely his approach to the game."That’s how I've always played the game; to me, that's just how it's meant to be played," Penning said Tuesday, The Associated Press' Brett Martel reports. Broncos' Patrick expected to miss season with reported torn ACL
Denver Broncos wide receiver Tim Patrick is expected to miss the 2022 season after suffering a knee injury during Tuesday's practice, the team announced.Denver didn't specify Patrick's injury, but an MRI revealed he suffered a torn ACL, a source told Mike Klis of 9News.Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett indicated Patrick's injury was serious when he spoke to reporters after the session."It breaks your heart," he said, according to Troy Renck of Denver7. "The worst part of this game is when things like that happen."Patrick, Courtland Sutton, and Jerry Jeudy were set to headline a Denver receiving group that was widely expected to be one of the NFL's most-improved units with the arrival of Russell Wilson. The five-year veteran signed a three-year, $30-million deal last November.Patrick established himself as a consistent presence in the Broncos' offense over the last two campaigns despite inconsistent quarterback play, producing a combined 104 catches for 1,476 yards and 11 touchdowns. It's the third straight year Denver has lost a starting wideout to a torn ACL following early season injuries to Sutton in 2020 and KJ Hamler in 2021.Hamler - who was removed from the physically unable to perform list Monday - Montrell Washington, and Seth Williams will likely take on expanded roles in Patrick's absence.Denver's offense suffered another setback as running back Damarea Crockett announced he also suffered a season-ending ACL injury at Tuesday's practice.Entering his second year in Denver, Crockett was in a fight for one of the remaining running back spots behind Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Packers' Lazard: 'I want to be the best receiver in the league'
Allen Lazard is set to take on a bigger role with the Green Bay Packers this season following Davante Adams' departure, and he's ready to make the most of the opportunity."I want to be the best receiver in the league," Lazard said, according to Sports Illustrated's Bill Huber. The fourth-year receiver acknowledged that he faces stiff competition in his quest to be the best, but he's determined to get there."I know Davante Adams is still alive. I know Keenan Allen, Stefon Diggs, Justin Jefferson, guys like that around the league," Lazard said. "Yes, I'm competing here every single day to earn those reps and targets but, overall, that's the end goal I want to get to. Having that big-picture mentality but focusing on the small details."Right now, it's just camp. We've only been through four days of practice ... so I'm not getting my vision too far down the road. But, ultimately, in the back of my mind, that's where the end goal will be, eventually. But, focus on the now, just focus on getting better every single day and knowing I can only get to that level too if I have other great guys in my room to complement me."Lazard set career highs last season with 40 catches for 513 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games. He's set to earn $3.9 million this season after signing a restricted free-agency tender in June.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Dolphins owner suspended, team loses draft picks for Brady, Payton tampering
The NFL announced Tuesday that an independent investigation determined the Miami Dolphins had impermissible communications with Tom Brady and former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton. As a result, the league is stripping the Dolphins of their 2023 first-round pick and their 2024 third-rounder for violating its integrity of the game policy.Additionally, the NFL is suspending Miami owner Stephen Ross through Oct. 17 and fining him $1.5 million. The league is also removing him from all committees indefinitely and barring him from attending any NFL meeting until the league's annual gathering in 2023.The investigation found that the Dolphins tampered with Brady both while he was under contract with the New England Patriots in 2019-20 and after his 2021 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Miami also violated league rules through its communications with Payton in January."The investigators found tampering violations of unprecedented scope and severity," said commissioner Roger Goodell. "I know of no prior instance of a team violating the prohibition on tampering with both a head coach and star player, to the potential detriment of multiple other clubs, over a period of several years. Similarly, I know of no prior instance in which ownership was so directly involved in the violations."The NFL also fined Dolphins vice chairman/limited partner Bruce Beal $500,000 and barred him from attending any league meeting for the remainder of the 2022 campaign. However, the league didn't find evidence supporting the tanking allegations made by former Dolphins coach Brian Flores.Flores said he refused to accept a $100,000-per-game offer to tank during his first season with Miami. The investigation found the offer wasn't intended, or taken, to be serious."Every club is expected to make a good-faith effort to win every game," Goodell said. "The integrity of the game, and public confidence in professional football, demand no less."An owner or senior executive must understand the weight that his or her words carry and the risk that a comment will be taken seriously and acted upon, even if that is not the intent or expectation. Even if made in jest and not intended to be taken seriously, comments suggesting that draft position is more important than winning can be misunderstood and carry with them an unnecessary potential risk to the integrity of the game."Goodell continued: "The comments made by Mr. Ross did not affect coach Flores' commitment to (winning), and the Dolphins competed to win every game. Coach Flores is to be commended for not allowing any comment about the relative importance of draft position to affect his commitment to (winning) throughout the season."Ross said the independent investigation cleared the Dolphins organization of "any issues related to tanking and all of Brian Flores' other allegations." But Ross voiced his disagreement with the investigation's findings on tampering."However, I will accept the outcome because the most important thing is that there be no distractions for our team as we begin an exciting and winning season," he said in a statement. The penalties imposed on the Dolphins are final and don't include any type of appeals process.Meanwhile, Flores said he was thankful the investigation corroborated his allegations but discouraged by Ross' punishment."I am disappointed to learn that the investigator minimized Mr. Ross' offers and pressure to tank games, especially when I wrote and submitted a letter at the time to Dolphins executives documenting my serious concerns regarding this subject at the time, which the investigator has in her possession," Flores said in a statement obtained by NFL Network's Mike Garafolo."While the investigator found that the Dolphins had engaged in impermissible tampering of 'unprecedented scope and severity,' Mr. Ross will avoid any meaningful consequence. There is nothing more important when it comes to the game of football itself than the integrity of the game. When the integrity of the game is called into question, fans suffer, and football suffers."Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Falcons don't plan to cut Deion Jones amid failed trade attempts
The Atlanta Falcons don't plan to cut Deion Jones despite failing to trade the linebacker, a source told The Athletic's Jeff Schultz. The decision to part with Jones has to do with his attitude and whether the club's football operations want him around others, Schultz reports. The former Pro Bowler's $20-million cap hit is the highest on the Falcons roster for 2022, according to Over the Cap. He's owed $9.6 million in base salary and has two years remaining on his contract.Jones began training camp on the physically unable to perform list due to a shoulder injury. General manager Terry Fontenot noted that there's no timetable for his return to the field.Fontenot was also reluctant to specify whether Jones was in the team's long-term plans."You can ask that question about any player on our roster, and we'll answer it the same way," he said, according to The Athletic's Josh Kendall. "We're always trying to build a roster the right way, and every decision we make is going to be for the betterment of the team as a whole."Rashaan Evans, Mykal Walker, and Nick Kwiatkoski are among candidates vying for the starting inside linebacker role while Jones remains in limbo.Jones finished second on the team with 137 tackles to go along with eight tackles for loss. The 27-year-old has started all but two games he's appeared in since joining the team in 2016.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
49ers' Bosa: 'I have a lot of faith' future extension talks will be smooth
Although Nick Bosa probably won't receive a contract extension until next year, the San Francisco 49ers pass-rusher is expecting an easygoing process once negotiations begin."I have a lot of faith that when the time comes, it will be smooth," Bosa told The Mercury News' Cam Inman. The two-time Pro Bowler still has two years remaining on his current contract, including a team option for the 2023 season.Last week, general manager John Lynch didn't dismiss the possibility of extending Bosa in 2022. However, he suggested it's more likely to happen next year."As long as we're here, Nick Bosa is going to be a part of the Niners, and he's going to get paid handsomely to do so," Lynch said.San Francisco has been willing to pay its star talent. Deebo Samuel inked a three-year extension worth up to $73.5 million Monday, while George Kittle and Fred Warner are among the players who've also received new deals over the last few years. The Niners currently hold the least amount of cap space in the league with just $3.3 million available, according to Over The Cap. They could create additional room by moving on from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his $24.2-million salary.Bosa enjoyed a bounce-back campaign last year after missing all but two games due to a torn ACL in 2020. He racked up 52 tackles, 15.5 sacks, and a league-leading 21 tackles for loss. The Ohio State product tallied 32 tackles, nine sacks, and 16 tackles for loss en route to winning 2019 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Preseason NFL Power Rankings: Where every team stands early in camp
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors.1. Buffalo Bills Joshua Bessex / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 1The Bills got better this year, and that should scare everyone around the NFL. Assuming Tre'Davious White doesn't miss a beat following his ACL rehab and rookie Kaiir Elam slides in as a starter at corner, Buffalo's defense will remain excellent. Von Miller might be the missing piece of the puzzle for the unit.2. Los Angeles RamsPost-draft rank: 2Things couldn't be going much better for the Rams, who signed their most important players to long-term deals in the offseason and have seen their top additions this year shine early at camp, including receiver Allen Robinson.3. Kansas City ChiefsPost-draft rank: 3How the Chiefs fare without wide receiver Tyreek Hill and safety Tyrann Mathieu remains to be seen, but Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid alone make Kansas City one of the NFL's scariest teams. Plus, rookie Skyy Moore, who could be an important part of Kansas City's new-look receiving corps, has stood out at camp so far.4. Los Angeles ChargersPost-draft rank: 5The Chargers' offense showed its talent last season but needed help on defense after allowing the fourth-most points in the league, and they aggressively tackled that issue. The defense will need to step up to go on a deep playoff run, and the new-look unit seems to be clicking so far.5. Cincinnati Bengals Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPost-draft rank: 6Many believe the 2021 Bengals are a one-year wonder, but we'll give Cincy the benefit of the doubt. It's scary to think that the likes of Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase will only get better as they gain more experience. Not only did the Bengals keep all their best players, but the club also bolstered its offensive line and secondary, addressing the top offseason priorities.6. Tampa Bay BuccaneersPost-draft rank: 4Julio Jones hasn't been nearly as productive as he once was, but the seven-time Pro Bowler was an exciting addition for Tampa Bay. However, excitement quickly evaporated when starting center Ryan Jensen went down with a knee injury. Losing Jensen for multiple months is a big blow to one of the league's premier O-lines.7. Green Bay PackersPost-draft rank: 7Aaron Rodgers and an underrated defense make the Packers contenders in the NFC, but Green Bay has to develop more talent around its quarterback to reach the Super Bowl. Injuries have been an issue early at camp, with rookie receiver Christian Watson and tackle David Bakhtiari nursing knee ailments.8. Baltimore RavensPost-draft rank: 9The Ravens still have time to sign Lamar Jackson to an extension before the season, and they should try to make that happen as the price will continue to rise. After a solid offseason and with Jackson and other stars fully healthy again, Baltimore will continue to be one of the league's most competitive teams.9. Denver BroncosPost-draft rank: 10Is Denver already a Super Bowl contender? Trading for Russell Wilson did solve the Broncos' biggest problem, but this is still an unproven roster that has talent but also little margin for error in the NFL's toughest division.10. Las Vegas Raiders Ethan Miller / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 13With Davante Adams making everything look easy, the Raiders' offense is already firing on all cylinders. Competing in the AFC West won't be easy, but Las Vegas got better. The Raiders don't get as much love as the Chiefs, Chargers, and even Broncos, but they seem just fine with being underdogs.11. Dallas CowboysPost-draft rank: 11It feels like every year is the same story for the Cowboys: Their coach finds himself on the hot seat but there's enough individual talent on the roster to make a deep run. Some of that talent departed in the offseason, but the main rookies - including wide receiver Jalen Tolbert - are impressing at camp. That's promising for the Cowboys, who will be without injured wideouts Michael Gallup and James Washington to start the season.12. Philadelphia EaglesPost-draft rank: 16The Eagles stood out early in free agency and the draft, and they've since gotten better, signing starting corner James Bradberry and veteran safety Jaquiski Tartt. Philly is prepared to compete in the NFC, and it's now Jalen Hurts' time to take the team to the next level in a make-or-break season for the third-year quarterback.13. Indianapolis ColtsPost-draft rank: 12Indy already employed a great running game and solid defense, so moving from quarterback Carson Wentz to Matt Ryan made the team an early AFC South favorite. But the Colts haven't added a proven receiver and seem fine with Parris Campbell and rookie Alec Pierce being the main weapons behind Michael Pittman Jr. That's not ideal when you're competing in an AFC overloaded with serious Super Bowl contenders.14. Tennessee TitansPost-draft rank: 14Tennessee heads into the season with more questions than they did last year, largely due to its passing game. Some of those issues will quickly be fixed if Treylon Burks lives up to his billing, though. The first-round rookie wideout, drafted this year to replace A.J. Brown, reportedly struggled during OTAs but has already turned heads at training camp.15. Cleveland Browns Diamond Images / Diamond Images / GettyPost-draft rank: 8Deshaun Watson's six-game suspension is shorter than many around the NFL expected, but the Browns will still start the season with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback. While that isn't ideal, it doesn't ruin Cleveland's year. If Brissett can win a couple of games, the Browns will be in a strong position to compete in the AFC North when Watson returns. His receiving corps remains an issue, though. Two of Cleveland's main wideouts - rookie David Bell and Anthony Schwartz - are battling injuries, creating more problems for a team that was already thin at wide receiver.16. Miami DolphinsPost-draft rank: 20Can you blame Dolphins fans for being excited? Miami's put on a show at camp. With Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson, and Raheem Mostert, the Dolphins might have the fastest offense in the league. But the fastest car won't win without an elite driver behind the wheel. Tua Tagovailoa, with the help of first-year coach Mike McDaniel, must prove he's the right quarterback for this team, and he looks ready to do so.17. San Francisco 49ersPost-draft rank: 15Going from Jimmy Garoppolo to Trey Lance creates questions at quarterback but also raises the team's ceiling. Signing Deebo Samuel to an extension was important, but the 49ers still have other concerns. Their O-line interior remains a work in progress after Alex Mack's retirement, and defensive lineman Arik Armstead recently suffered a knee injury that will sideline him for multiple weeks.18. Minnesota VikingsPost-draft rank: 18The Vikings hired first-year head coach Kevin O'Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah but avoided a complete roster overhaul and mostly made win-now moves in the offseason. But is this team - which hasn't made the playoffs in two years - actually ready to win now? The Vikings are better than they were a year ago, but they're not a threat in the NFC yet.19. Arizona CardinalsPost-draft rank: 17We all thought the Cardinals would start training camp without any more drama after finally inking an extension with Kyler Murray. However, the independent study clause in the quarterback's new contract stole the headlines and created a big distraction, eventually resulting in Arizona removing it from the deal.20. New Orleans Saints Scott Taetsch / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 22The signings of Tyrann Mathieu and receiver Jarvis Landry show that New Orleans wants to make noise in the NFC this year despite longtime coach Sean Payton's retirement. Getting Michael Thomas back is also huge. The Saints' biggest concern now is Alvin Kamara, whom the NFL can still suspend under the personal conduct policy.21. New England PatriotsPost-draft rank: 19The Patriots' ceiling doesn't seem high enough to contend in the AFC, but things could change if the defense continues its dominance and Mac Jones makes a big jump in his sophomore season. Early reports at camp indicate Jones is off to a strong start, and some of his highlights corroborate that.22. Pittsburgh SteelersPost-draft rank: 21Is this the year the Steelers post their first losing season under coach Mike Tomlin? Pittsburgh has a huge question mark at quarterback as rookie Kenny Pickett and Mitchell Trubisky compete for the job. Neither has reportedly impressed at camp so far. But would Pickett, whom we expect to beat out Trubisky at some point, be ready to shine right away in one of the NFL's toughest divisions? Unless the defense has an impeccable season, it could be a long year in Pittsburgh.23. Carolina PanthersPost-draft rank: 27The narrative surrounding the Panthers is mostly the same as a year ago: They have issues at quarterback. Trading for Baker Mayfield doesn't solve the team's issue immediately, but it adds to the mix a player who two years ago was considered a franchise QB and almost beat the Chiefs in the playoffs. Mayfield should beat out Sam Darnold to Carolina's starting job.24. New York JetsPost-draft rank: 24Zach Wilson's reportedly shown improvement in camp after struggling in his rookie season. New Jets tight end C.J. Uzomah even sees similarities between Wilson and Joe Burrow. If Wilson has a Year 2 leap as big as the one Uzomah helped Burrow post with the Bengals in 2021, the Jets may finally take flight.25. Washington Commanders Scott Taetsch / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 23New logo and name, same on-field problems. The Commanders' biggest uncertainty is under center, as it remains to be seen how Carson Wentz - Washington's seventh different starting quarterback since 2020 - will perform. On the other side of the ball, star defensive end Chase Young was already ruled out for Week 1 as he recovers from a torn ACL.26. Detroit LionsPost-draft rank: 25Detroit is entering Year 2 of a promising rebuild under coach Dan Campbell and GM Brad Holmes. Limitations on offense and glaring holes on defense remain, but the Lions are destined to improve after winning just three games last year.27. Jacksonville JaguarsPost-draft rank: 26There's no way the Jaguars will pick first overall for a third straight draft, right? Getting excited about Jacksonville can be risky, but Trevor Lawrence heads into Year 2 with a proven head coach in Doug Pederson and an improved supporting cast.28. New York GiantsPost-draft rank: 28New GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll inherited a team with a lot of issues, but the Giants employ talented players on both sides of the ball. Daboll has a lot of work to do, but his life would be much easier in the Big Apple if he can find a way to turn quarterback Daniel Jones' career around.29. Seattle SeahawksPost-draft rank: 29Good news, Seahawks fans: Drew Lock is not getting most first-team reps at training camp. The bad news: Geno Smith is ahead of him on the depth chart. It's hard to envision good things for Seattle with its current QB situation.30. Atlanta Falcons Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPost-draft rank: 31Atlanta's ultimate goal is to find its next franchise quarterback, but that won't be easy this year with Marcus Mariota and third-round rookie Desmond Ridder being the top options. The development of young stars such as Kyle Pitts and Drake London is also crucial for the Falcons to find success in the post-Matt Ryan era.31. Chicago BearsPost-draft rank: 30It looks like this will be a long season for the Bears, whose O-line and receiving corps face big questions as new GM Ryan Poles and first-year head coach Matt Eberflus usher in a new era in Chicago. Let's just hope they don't fail quarterback Justin Fields for too long.32. Houston TexansPost-draft rank: 32For the Texans - owners of perhaps the NFL's most talent-deficient roster - training camp and preseason will be about evaluating the development of young players. Unfortunately, second-round rookie receiver John Metchie is unlikely to play this year after being diagnosed with leukemia.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Cowboys' Washington to miss 10 weeks with fractured foot
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver James Washington will miss 10 weeks after fracturing his foot during Monday's practice, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones announced, according to Clarence E. Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.However, Washington's timeline could be as short as six weeks, sources told ESPN's Todd Archer. He's reportedly set to undergo surgery in Dallas on Tuesday. The wideout was carted off after attempting to make a catch downfield.
49ers' Shanahan: 'Special' Samuel will continue dual role
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Deebo Samuel will continue to take on a do-it-all role for the team after questions over the wideout's future were quashed with a contract extension."I think (it's) based off of whatever happens," Shanahan said, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. "From my standpoint schematically, from our team's personnel, from Deebo's, from what we think gives us the best chance to win, if we wanted to move Deebo to running back that would have been something that we were honest about.""You can't do that with (just) anybody," Shanahan added. "You've got to do that with a special player and Deebo is a special player. That's why he's earned this contract that he's got and I think that's why he's going to continue to earn it going forward."Samuel requested a trade from San Francisco this offseason, and his desire to leave was reportedly partly due to his reluctance to play running back moving forward. But it appears the 49ers and Samuel were able to come to a financial compromise. The 26-year-old's three-year extension, which is reportedly worth up to $73.5 million, contains $1.95 million in incentives based on rushing production.Samuel enjoyed a breakout 2021 season, earning first-team All-Pro honors. He racked up 77 catches for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns, adding 365 yards and eight scores on the ground.Shanahan knows he has a unique threat and Samuel's dual-threat role will continue to be vital to San Francisco's success."When Deebo stays healthy and he's able to practice and able to go through things, Deebo is capable of doing anything," Shanahan said. "That's why he's helped us so much to win, whether it's in the pass game or the run game or whether it's blocking or throwing the one time we asked him to throw. When you have guys who have skill sets that can do a number of things, you want to always keep them doing them."Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Watson suspended 6 games after probe into sexual assault, misconduct complaints
Warning: Story contains graphic contentNFL disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson imposed a six-game suspension Monday on Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson following numerous allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct, the league announced Monday. The NFL and NFLPA have three days to appeal the decision, though the union said Sunday it would accept Robinson's ruling. The league stated Monday it will review Robinson's imposition and determine the next steps. Robinson, the jointly appointed officer who previously served as a Delaware district court judge, presided over Watson's disciplinary hearing from June 28-30. She ruled that Watson violated the NFL's personal conduct policy, allowing the league to enforce a suspension.Watson's ruling included no additional fine for the quarterback. Robinson also stated in her conclusion that she believes it's appropriate that Watson limit his massage therapy to team-directed sessions and team-approved massage therapists for the remainder of his career. He's also to have no "adverse involvement with law enforcement" and must not violate the league's personal conduct policy again in the future, Robinson adds. The NFL spent over a year probing 24 lawsuits and 10 criminal complaints that accused Watson of lewd and coercive behavior while receiving massages from women.Watson agreed to settle 20 of the 24 lawsuits in June. He settled three of the remaining four lawsuits shortly before Robinson announced her disciplinary decision, according to ESPN's John Barr.Grand juries in Texas declined to indict Watson on criminal charges in March. The incidents cited in the lawsuits took place between March 2020 and March 2021. The first lawsuit was filed March 16, 2021.The Browns acquired Watson from the Houston Texans in March knowing he could face significant NFL discipline. Cleveland traded six draft picks, including three first-round selections, to get him, and immediately signed him to a new five-year contract worth a record $230 million fully guaranteed."Throughout this process, Deshaun and his representatives have abided by the newly created and agreed upon process for the NFLPA and the NFL to defer to the objective Judge Sue L. Robinson to comprehensively review all information and make a fair decision," said Browns owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam in a statement."We respect Judge Robinson's decision, and at the same time, empathize and understand that there have been many individuals triggered throughout this process. We know Deshaun is remorseful that this situation has caused much heartache to many, and he will continue the work needed to show who he is on and off the field, and we will continue to support him."Many of the women who filed lawsuits or criminal complaints said Watson inappropriately touched them with his penis during massage sessions and coercively attempted to get them to touch him in a sexual manner. Two women said Watson forced them to perform oral sex, and one of the two said Watson grabbed her buttocks and vagina.Watson maintained his innocence as the allegations mounted. His lawyer, Rusty Hardin, said Watson engaged in sexual activity with some of the complainants but that it was consensual.Watson, 26, requested a trade from the Texans in January 2021 before any of the allegations surfaced. He was eligible to play last season while the NFL monitored developments in the civil and criminal complaints, but was a healthy scratch for all 17 games.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns plan to start Brissett during Watson's suspension
Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Monday he intends to roll with quarterback Jacoby Brissett as the starter during Deshaun Watson's six-game suspension, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. But Stefanski added it will be important to get both Brissett and Watson ready to play during training camp."We have a couple (of) plans. We're going to stick to it until we get more information," he said.NFL disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson imposed the ban upon Watson earlier in the day following numerous allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct. The NFL Players Association said it wouldn't appeal Robinson's verdict prior to her announcement. The league can challenge the ruling within the next three days.Although the Browns have maintained that Brissett is their primary backup, rumors have persisted that the club could look to bring in another veteran to help cover Watson's absence.San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been speculated as a possible target. Garoppolo is on the trade block and should be cleared to resume practicing in mid-August after offseason shoulder surgery. With an NFL-high $49 million in cap space, Cleveland has the resources to make another move under center.Brissett boasts substantial starting experience, which primarily came during his four-year stint with the Indianapolis Colts. He started 30 games (and appeared in 16 more) for Indianapolis, racking up 6,059 yards and 31 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Bears holding trade talks for Jenkins
The Chicago Bears are discussing trading offensive tackle Teven Jenkins after receiving interest in the 2021 second-round pick, sources told Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The previous regime in Chicago drafted Jenkins, who missed most of his rookie season with a back injury. The Bears fired head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace, replacing them with Matt Eberflus and Ryan Poles, respectively, in January.Jenkins missed three straight practices to begin training camp, but the Bears didn't say why he was absent. The 24-year-old initially ran with the first-team unit during offseason workouts but was surpassed by Larry Borom at right tackle. The Bears' offensive line is one of their biggest question marks ahead of quarterback Justin Fields' second season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Murray tests positive for COVID-19, will miss at least 5 days
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be sidelined for a minimum of five days, head coach Kliff Kingsbury said, according to team reporter Darren Urban.Kingsbury added that the signal-caller's symptoms are minor. The NFL suspended COVID-19 protocols earlier this year but informed teams last month that a positive test requires a five-day isolation period to match CDC guidelines, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Murray and the Cardinals recently agreed to a five-year, $230.5-million extension that includes $160 million guaranteed. The passer's new contract ranks second among all NFL players in guaranteed money and average annual value ($46.1 million). The 2019 first overall pick won a personal-best nine starts last season en route to making the playoffs for the first time in his career. He also compiled 24 passing touchdowns to 10 interceptions.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Chiefs' Brown to report to camp, play on franchise tag
Kansas City Chiefs left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. is reporting to training camp Monday and will play the 2022 campaign on the franchise tag, his agent Michael Portner told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero."He wanted to be there for padded practice because that's when leaders are developed," Portner said. The Chiefs and Brown were unable to agree to an extension before the deadline for tagged players to sign long-term contracts last month. Kansas City's offer reportedly would have been six years in length and given Brown the position's highest signing bonus and average annual salary. However, Brown and his agent felt the contract lacked security. It was reported that more than $40 million of the Chiefs' offer came in the final year of the proposed contract, which boosted its average annual worth. The amount of guaranteed money also wasn't revealed.Brown is due to make $16.7 million under the franchise tag in 2022The 26-year-old was acquired by the Chiefs in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens last offseason. He started 16 games in 2021 and earned his third straight Pro Bowl invite.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Bengals' Mixon: I should've pushed to enter final drive of Super Bowl
Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon wishes he made the call to enter the final drive of Super Bowl LVI.Mixon was on the sideline during the Bengals' final plays of their 23-20 Super Bowl loss to the Los Angeles Rams, as Samaje Perine closed out the game. Perine was stopped on a third-and-1 attempt before Joe Burrow's incomplete pass to the running back on fourth down sealed the loss."It was just a 'caught-up-in-the-moment' thing," Mixon said Friday, according to Kelsey Conway of The Cincinnati Enquirer. "I really should have taken initiative on myself and just been like, 'Hey, I'm coming in.' But you know, it was the heat of the moment."Despite his regrets, Mixon says his attention is centered on being in the right place if the situation arises again."We're trying to go ahead and do whatever we can to repeat and get back in that same situation. And when we are in that situation, damn sure you know I'll be in," Mixon said.Bengals head coach Zac Taylor, who faced criticism for the move in the aftermath of the loss, said Saturday he understands Mixon's perspective."You absolutely should feel passionate about that situation," Taylor told reporters, including ESPN's Ben Baby. "He's handled it outstanding. That's much appreciated. He knows that. It's one of the reasons you want to get back to those moments."Mixon had the best season of his career in 2021, rushing for a personal best 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Watch: Bills' Allen shoves Phillips after getting bumped at end of play
Tempers flared during the Buffalo Bills' training camp Saturday.Bills quarterback Josh Allen shoved defensive lineman Jordan Phillips after getting bumped at end of a play, igniting a brief altercation between offensive and defensive players. Allen was wearing a non-contact jersey.
Jerry Jones: Elliott needs to be lead RB, still a role for Pollard
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes it's necessary for Ezekiel Elliott to lead the backfield, but he still envisions a role for backup Tony Pollard."Zeke's got to be our feature (running back), and he is our feature. We can feature him in a lot of different ways," Jones said Saturday on NFL Network, per NFL.com's Kevin Patra. "We all recognize what he does in the passing game because of his protection ability. Don't ever underestimate that, especially with Zeke.""So, it's critical that we make Zeke - because he's capable of being that - really the focus of what we're doing," Jones continued. "There's plenty of room for Pollard when Zeke's in there. Pollard needs to get the ball."Elliott's production has drawn criticism in recent years. His yards-per-game figure has decreased every season since his rookie campaign, and he hasn't had a Pro Bowl nod since 2019. The 27-year-old finished the 2021 campaign with 1,002 yards on 4.2 yards per carry.Meanwhile, Pollard has excelled in limited action as the Cowboys' No. 2 running back. The former fourth-round pick set new career highs last season in rushing yards (719) and yards per attempt (5.5).Elliott is in the midst of a six-year, $90-million extension he signed in 2019. He accounts for an $18.2-million cap hit this season, but the Cowboys can get out of his deal with an $11.9-million dead-money charge in 2023, per Spotrac.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eagles' Sirianni: Reagor 'battling for a spot' in camp
Philadelphia Eagles receiver Jalen Reagor is competing for a role on the roster in training camp, according to head coach Nick Sirianni."He's battling for a spot," Sirianni said Saturday. "He is working with the (second team) right now."The coach added he's been impressed with what he's seen out of Reagor so far."He's gotten a lot of balls over the last two days," Sirianni said. "He's done a nice job. He's battling for a spot. He's battling for a return spot. He's worked hard in the offseason to come back in great shape. That's something that we all noticed in the conditioning tests."The No. 21 overall pick in the 2020 draft, Reagor has struggled to live up to his billing. He's compiled 695 receiving yards over his two NFL seasons, recording only 299 yards and two scores in 2021.General manager Howie Roseman said in May that the Eagles remained committed to the 23-year-old despite reports about the team being open to trade offers for him.A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith headline Philadelphia's wide receiver room. The remainder of the depth chart includes Reagor, Quez Watkins, Greg Ward, and Zach Pascal, among others.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Our offseason refresher on the betting outlook for each of the NFL's 32 teams concludes with the Cleveland Browns.Deshaun Watson's legal troubles after being accused of sexual harassment and assault by 24 massage therapists - 20 of the suits have been settled - and the NFL's slow movement on what feels like an inevitable suspension makes any assessment of Cleveland's season difficult. Rumors suggest a suspension of anywhere from a couple of games to an entire season. The Browns are absent from the season win total market as a result, but bets can be placed on them to win the division, conference, and Super Bowl.2022 Season oddsMarket Odds (O/U)Win totalN/ADivision+275Conference+1400Super Bowl+3000All of the Browns' futures odds were shorter before it became clear Jacoby Brissett will be starting at quarterback for some portion of the season - their division odds were shorter than +200. Things have changed. At this point, a bet on the Browns begins with an absolute guess on how much time Watson will miss.Schedule outlookWeekOpponentLookahead line1@CARPK2NYJN/A3PITN/A4@ATLN/A5LACN/A6NEN/A7@BALN/A8CINN/A10@MIAN/A11@BUFN/A12TBN/A13@HOUN/A14@CINN/A15BALN/A16NON/A17@WSHN/A18@PITN/AThe move from the Browns as 4.5-point favorites down to a pick'em in their Week 1 showdown with their former quarterback, Baker Mayfield, is a clear indication Watson won't be available against the Panthers. As for the remaining schedule, sportsbooks are largely deploying the shoulder shrug emoji. We have to do the same when it comes to breaking down our SWOT analysis despite our respect for a defense that allowed the second-fewest yards per play in 2021.Instead, we'll use this space to identify what the difference might be for the Browns, and their opponents, when Watson is the quarterback versus when Brissett is taking the snaps.Watson vs. BrissettWhen Mayfield was out last year, Case Keenum took over. As a result, there were opportunities to bet on the Browns because the downgrade from a banged-up Baker - to a Case of the replacement-level quarterback - was overadjusted in the market. We've seen enough of Brissett to know he's a notable downgrade from Watson. However, the Browns are capable of winning via their run game and/or an opportunistic defense led by Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney. The difference between Watson and Brissett isn't as simple as assigning 4-4.5 points like the market did when Mayfield was traded. There are two reasons why: 1. Mayfield was the probable starter for Cleveland in that game, so that measurement is from him down to Brissett; 2. The line accounts for the upgrade from Sam Darnold to Mayfield. So, how do we figure out what to do when the suspension is announced? We use power ratings as a starting point with the limited market knowledge we have.We know the Brissett Browns are rated slightly better than the Panthers since they're nearly a pick'em on the road at Carolina. A quick look at the Panthers' schedule with projected point spreads shows that in their division games, the point spread shifts by two points in home/road matchups against the Buccaneers and Saints, as well as three against the Falcons. This likely means oddsmakers have assigned a 1-1.5 point home-field advantage for Carolina. With a total of only six in season win markets, Carolina's power rating is around 35/100 in the market. In a pick'em game with one point of home-field advantage, Brissett's Browns have to be considered around 38/100.Now, let's look at what the rating for the Watson Browns would be.We know they should be good, but how good? We can do slightly better than guessing since we know they were lined as equals to the Bengals and Ravens in the divisional odds markets early in the offseason.Cincinnati and Baltimore have a median win expectation of 10, which translates to a 58/100 power rating. The Browns appear on those teams' schedules in Week 7 and Week 8, respectively. That means Cleveland's win total probabilities only change if Watson is given a suspension of more than six games.Back to Week 1: Whether it's Watson's Browns, the Bengals, or the Ravens, a visiting team in Carolina, with an approximate rating of 58, would be 5.5-point favorites. Since the Browns are lined near pick'em, it stands to reason that a point spread will change by around 5.5 points. That's a moneyline change from -120 to -230 and an implied win probability change of 15%.*Note: With key numbers like -3, -6, and -7 carrying larger values in football betting, this 5.5-point number can shorten depending on how many key numbers a point spread adjustment crosses.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Mahomes believes Black QBs subject to specific criticism: 'It's always weird'
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes finds it interesting that only Black quarterbacks are subject to certain types of criticism."Obviously, the Black quarterback has had to battle to be in this position," Mahomes said Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Teicher."Every day, we're proving that we should have been playing the whole time," he continued. "We've got guys that can think just as well as they can use their athleticism. It's always weird when you see guys like me, Lamar, Kyler kind of get that on them when other guys don't. But at the same time, we're going out there to prove ourselves every day to show we can be some of the best quarterbacks in the league."Mahomes' comments come after the Arizona Cardinals included an "independent study" clause in a five-year, $230.5-million contract extension for Kyler Murray. The stipulation that would have required Murray to study four hours of game film each week on his own was removed from the deal this week.Mahomes, a Super Bowl winner and the 2018 league MVP, recently received criticism for his play by an unspecified veteran defensive play-caller in an article written by The Athletic's Mike Sando."We love Mahomes because of his unorthodox throws, not because of his natural pocket presence. And when that disappears, that is when they lose games. I don't think that is a one. I think that is a two. Nothing against the guy. I love the kid. But take his first read away and what does he do? He runs, he scrambles, and he plays streetball."The Baltimore Ravens' Lamar Jackson, who was ranked 10th among QBs (Mahomes No. 2), also received negative feedback in the same article. An anonymous defensive coordinator claimed that if the 2019 MVP needed to pass to win the game, "they ain't winning the game."Despite Mahomes' observations, the four-time Pro Bowler was reluctant to say that Black passers are judged differently than their white peers. Instead, the Chiefs signal-caller believes he still has plenty to prove in the league."At the end of the day nothing matters until you're on that football field playing and that's where you get to prove who you are every single day."Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Seahawks' Adams broke finger, expected back before season
Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams is expected to be back on the field in early August after breaking the middle finger on his left hand Wednesday, Adam Jude of the Seattle Times reports. The former All-Pro defensive back plans to be ready for the start of the season, Jude adds.Adams is expected to practice with a club and will wear a special cast for games, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. While surgery remains likely, the plan is for it to be done in the offseason. The 26-year-old left training camp to seek additional medical opinions Thursday regarding how to proceed. The injury is believed to have occurred on the Seahawks' first day of camp.Adams has played with dislocated digits on his left hand in each of the past two seasons. He underwent a procedure to fuse two fingers to help solve the issue. The three-time Pro Bowler missed the final five games of the 2021 campaign after undergoing surgery to repair a shoulder issue. Adams racked up 87 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two interceptions last season.Adams is entering his third campaign in Seattle following a 2020 trade from the New York Jets. He's hoping to recapture past form that resulted in 9.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss in his first year with Seattle.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Commanders' Young set to miss Week 1 amid recovery from ACL tear
Washington Commanders star pass-rusher Chase Young won't be on the field for the Week 1 opener, head coach Ron Rivera said Friday, according to ESPN's John Keim.Rivera added that he can't determine when Young will return from the ACL tear that ended his 2021 campaign after nine games."It just depends on where he is. I can't tell you," Rivera said, per Keim. "The doctor is the only one that can tell you.He continued: "I can't give you a number. I don't want to put pressure on the young man to try to hit a number that I can't give you."The team placed Young on the PUP list when players reported for training camp earlier this week, though he can be activated anytime. The 2020 second overall pick said last month that his ACL rehab was "going as planned."Young was named Defensive Rookie of the Year after recording 7.5 sacks and four forced fumbles in 2020. He put up 1.5 sacks last season prior to his injury.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Metcalf signs reported 3-year, $72M extension with Seahawks
Seattle Seahawks signed wide receiver DK Metcalf to a multi-year extension, the team announced Friday. The extension is a three-year, $72-million contract with $58.2 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The deal also includes a $30-million signing bonus, the highest ever for a wide receiver, Schefter reports. The 24-year-old was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which was set to pay him $3.9 million in 2022. Metcalf's new pact ties him to Seattle through 2025.Metcalf reported to Seahawks training camp but didn't take part in drills as he awaited a new deal. Head coach Pete Carroll indicated that both sides were working toward a new agreement. The former Ole Miss product has been an integral piece of the Seahawks' offense since being drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He's posted over 900 receiving yards in each of his three seasons and earned a Pro Bowl honor in 2020.Metcalf hauled in 75 receptions for 967 yards and 12 touchdowns during his 2021 campaign. The Mississippi native becomes the latest receiver to cash in with a blockbuster extension ahead of the 2022 season, following Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, and Terry McLaurin.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. 2022 Baltimore Ravens betting preview
It was pretty obvious early on that it wasn't going to be the Baltimore Ravens' year in 2021. They're one of the few NFL teams that can't afford to have their entire running back room essentially wiped out. Sure enough, J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, and Justice Hill systematically tore ligaments that knocked each of them out for the campaign before the regular season even started.Ty'son Williams had a moment in Week 1, but the Ravens charged entities like Latavius Murray, Le'veon Bell, and Devonta Freeman to carry a run-first offense. While that side of the ball was swimming upstream, injuries sent the defense careening down as the secondary got sapped late in the season in the same way the tailbacks did prior to the campaign. If there was ever a "throw out what happened last year" season, that was it for Baltimore, and the market reflects that heading into 2022.2022 Season oddsMarket Odds (O/U)Win total9.5 (-150/+125)Division+160Conference+1000Super Bowl+2200The Ravens still managed to win eight games last campaign and are now lined as the favorites to win the AFC North. They offer a barely shorter price than the Bengals, even though Cincinnati has a higher season win total at 10.Schedule outlookWeekOpponentLookahead line1@NYJ-62MIA-43@NEPK4BUF+15CIN-16@NYG-3.57CLEN/A8@TB+3.59@NO-111CAR-5.512@JAX-413DEN-1.514@PIT-215@CLEN/A16ATL-7.517PIT-5.518@CIN+3Baltimore hasn't lost a preseason game since 2015 - one of the wilder facts you'll ever see. However, this year's goal is to stay healthy before the club opens as road favorites at the New York Jets. In an odd scheduling quirk, the Ravens see the entire AFC East before facing anyone else. If starting the season healthy is key, finishing with a full roster is critical as Baltimore closes with four divisional matchups in its final five games.SWOT AnalysisStrengthsGiven the numbers from last year, the Ravens' offense is their strength by default. However, we'll assume that a devastating run game orchestrated by Lamar Jackson will be back close to where it was in 2020. Baltimore averaged 192 rushing yards per game that year, compared to 145.8 last season. With that element compromised, Jackson showed marked improvement with his passing in the previous campaign. He was touted as "better than ever" through six games, but he couldn't sustain the momentum. With an on-field life made easier by some help on the ground, there's no legitimate reason to believe Jackson can't string it together for a full season in 2022.Star left tackle Ronnie Stanley also missed the entire 2021 campaign, and the line struggled to compensate. Kevin Zeitler is the only other incumbent expected to start this upcoming season, as first-round pick Tyler Linderbaum takes over at center.WeaknessesPick a name from the Ravens' secondary - Marcus Peters, Jimmy Smith, Marlon Humphrey, Anthony Averett, Tavon Young. Each missed somewhere between the entire season and a handful of games. As a result, they went from second in the league in opponents' yards per pass attempt to being tied with the Detroit Lions for last in the NFL.Veterans Marcus Williams and Kyle Fuller join a unit that should see Peters back to full strength. That's a pretty big leap in talent from where the secondary group was when Baltimore lost six straight to close the season. The unit also added first-round safety Kyle Hamilton (the fourth choice for Defensive Rookie of the Year) and Alabama-product Jalyn Armour-Davis in the draft. The Ravens' defense could easily flip back to being a strength, a scenario that legitimizes them as the division favorite.OpportunitiesIf you haven't clued into the above, the opportunities come from an armada of key players regaining full health, impact players joining via the draft, and Baltimore picking up where it left off in 2020 when it was 11-5 after going 14-2 the year before.ThreatsMore injury chaos. More than any other team, the Ravens use their run offense to wear down opponents and keep their own defense fresh because their quarterback can extend drives, particularly on fourth down. Jackson also missed time last year, which was atop the long list of why the season fell apart. How to bet the RavensIf Jackson is healthy and provides his usual mix of spectacular plays, he'll get all the credit for a big Baltimore season in which a division title will be seen as more impressive than usual. He's 20-1 for MVP. Maybe there's a quarterback that stands out more and gets the credit for leading his team to a 1-seed. If so, Jackson's combined passing and rushing yards might lead him to Offensive Player of the Year. He's 25-1 to win that award.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Bucs' Bowles: Jensen to miss 'couple of months' with knee injury
Tampa Bay Buccaneers center Ryan Jensen is set for a lengthy absence due to a knee injury suffered Thursday."I don't know the severity of it per se, but I do know he'll miss some significant time, up to a couple of months," head coach Todd Bowles said Friday, according to Greg Auman of The Athletic.Bowles said Jensen's ability to return during the back half of the season depends on the final diagnosis of the injury.Jensen was carted off during Thursday's practice session. Previous reports said the team feared the ailment would be season-ending.Bowles said the Bucs are considering adding a veteran center in the wake of Jensen's injury, but they also want to give Robert Hainsey and Nick Leverett opportunities, according to Jenna Laine of ESPN.Jensen hasn't missed a game since joining Tampa Bay in 2018. Bucs' Jensen carted off with knee injury
Tampa Bay Buccaneers center Ryan Jensen suffered what's feared to be a season-ending knee injury during practice Thursday and needed to be carted off the field, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Bucs are still waiting for final confirmation on the Pro Bowler's injury, Rapoport adds."Hopefully, it just looked worse than it is," a Buccaneers official told James Palmer of NFL Network.Jensen threw his helmet while being carted off, according to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports. The 31-year-old joined Tampa Bay in 2018 and has played every game over the last four years. Cardinals remove 'independent study' clause from Murray's contract
The Arizona Cardinals removed the "independent study" clause from quarterback Kyler Murray's contract extension, the franchise announced Thursday."After seeing the distraction it created, we removed the addendum from the contract," the Cardinals said in a statement obtained by ESPN's Adam Schefter. "It was clearly perceived in ways that we never intended. Our confidence in Kyler Murray is as high as it's ever been and nothing demonstrates our belief in his ability to lead this team more than the commitment reflected in this contract.""Independent study" is defined as material given to Murray by the team in order to prepare for the upcoming game.Murray, who turns 25 in August, signed a five-year, $230.5-million extension with the Cardinals last week. The homework clause would have required the star passer to complete at least four hours of independent study during each week of the season. The two-time Pro Bowler made an unscheduled media appearance on Thursday to defend himself from criticism about his work ethic in light of the stipulation."To think that I can accomplish everything that I've accomplished in my career and not be a student of the game and not have that passion and not take this serious is disrespectful, and it's almost a joke," Murray said."I'm flattered that you all think that at my size I can go out there and not prepare for the game and not take it serious. It's disrespectful to my peers and all the great athletes and great players that are in this league. This game's too hard. To play the position that I play in this league is too hard."Team owner Michael Bidwill was believed to be the driving force behind including the clause in Murray's contract. Arizona reportedly wanted to ensure that Murray would continue to work hard and perform at a level that is necessary following the contract.Murray has tallied 3,700-plus passing yards since Arizona selected him with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. A true dual-threat under center, Murray has also rushed for 1,786 rushing yards and 20 scores over three seasons. The 2019 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year led the Cardinals to their first postseason berth since 2015 last year, throwing for 3,787 yards and 24 touchdowns with a 69.2% completion rate.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Which teams have seen biggest movement in Super Bowl odds?
It's been five months since the Super Bowl odds were first released for the 2022 season, and the market has predictably changed quite a bit since then. Nearly all of it has been related to a flurry of quarterback movement - including a GOAT walking away and subsequently returning to the league and a handful of blockbuster moves for the NFL's top signal-callers.So, with just over a month left before the season starts, here's a look at the latest Super Bowl odds and which teams have seen the biggest movement since February:TEAMODDSBuffalo Bills+650Tampa Bay Buccaneers+750Green Bay Packers+1000Kansas City Chiefs+1000Los Angeles Rams+1100Los Angeles Chargers+1500San Francisco 49ers+1600Denver Broncos+1700Baltimore Ravens+1800Dallas Cowboys+1800Cincinnati Bengals+2200Indianapolis Colts+2200Cleveland Browns+3000Philadelphia Eagles+3000Arizona Cardinals+3500Tennessee Titans+3500Las Vegas Raiders+4000Miami Dolphins+4000Minnesota Vikings+4000New England Patriots+4000New Orleans Saints+4500Pittsburgh Steelers+8000Washington Commanders+8000New York Giants+10000Carolina Panthers+12500Chicago Bears+12500Detroit Lions+12500Jacksonville Jaguars+12500New York Jets+15000Seattle Seahawks+15000Atlanta Falcons+20000Houston Texans+30000Biggest risersTampa Bay Buccaneers (+750)When the greatest quarterback of all time decides to re-join your team, the betting market is sure to take notice. So it should come as no surprise to see the Buccaneers top this list after Tom Brady retired and un-retired in the span of a few weeks. His return was a shock to oddsmakers, who had priced Tampa Bay as high as 40-1 at theScore Bet before news broke of Brady's decision. With the MVP runner-up back in the saddle, the Bucs are favored to win the NFC and return to the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons.Denver Broncos (+1700)It may not feel like a dramatic leap for the Broncos, who were dealing at 22-1 when we broke down the early odds back in February, but that price baked in an assumption that Denver would land a star quarterback this spring. Sure enough, they pulled off a mega-deal for Seahawks star Russell Wilson in a move that clearly vaults this team into the NFL's elite. The early excitement had the Broncos dealing closer to 12-1 after the trade, so the market has cooled a bit on this group since then amid the crowded AFC West. Still, few teams have had a better offseason than Denver, and the market certainly reflects that.Indianapolis Colts (+2200)It wasn't as splashy as the moves by the Bucs and Broncos, but the Colts improved at the quarterback spot, too - adding former MVP Matt Ryan after sending Carson Wentz to the Commanders in a prior move.Indianapolis found success riding a veteran QB in Philip Rivers a few years ago, and Ryan appears better equipped to succeed from the get-go than Rivers or Wentz. There are still some questions about this Colts roster after the team missed the playoffs a year ago, but steady play under center should do wonders for a group that's teased Super Bowl potential for years.Biggest fallersTennessee Titans (+3500)The Titans are the only team on this list who didn't ship their longtime veteran quarterback to another team this offseason. Instead, they traded away Ryan Tannehill's top wideout in a move that will save money down the line but hinders the offense in the short term. That move is a key reason why Tennessee's title price has nearly doubled since February. Make no mistake, this offense still runs through Derrick Henry, though the receiving room looks a little bare without A.J. Brown leading the way. The Titans were the No. 1 seed in the AFC a year ago, but bettors simply aren't buying their title chances for 2022.Seattle Seahawks (+15000)What happens when you trade one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL for a package built around draft capital? Unsurprisingly, you drop from the ranks of title contenders to one of the biggest long shots. The Seahawks were 33-1 in late February, which was influenced in part by a growing belief that Wilson's days in Seattle were numbered. Sure enough, the team jettisoned Wilson and longtime star linebacker Bobby Wagner to accelerate a full rebuild in the Emerald City.Atlanta Falcons (+20000)While the Seahawks' title price fell from greater heights, no team saw a more dramatic drop on the oddsboard than the Falcons, who were dealing at 50-1 in February and saw their price peak slightly into March with rumors swirling about their interest in Deshaun Watson.Instead, they struck out on Watson and dealt Ryan to the Colts to signal the start of a long-needed rebuild in Atlanta. The team doubled down by signing Marcus Mariota to a short deal and opting not to draft a quarterback in the first round - all but assuring this team will watch the playoffs from home this year.C Jackson Cowart is a sports betting writer at theScore.
