"We're thankful he's OK. He will make a full recovery."Rosenhaus said Twyman was in the "wrong place, at the wrong time."Twyman was in his car when shot and suffered "superficial, exit wounds," and he won't require surgery, Rosenhaus told Schefter. After getting to see his new quarterback up close during the Los Angeles Rams' offseason program, coach Sean McVay can't contain his excitement about Matthew Stafford."Bro, this dude's a bad MF-er," McVay told Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer."Whatever people say about him, as good as it can be, he's even better than advertised. ... The guy's ability to see the game, his ability to draw on his experiences, the feel that he has, it's pretty special and unique. And, man, his feel for people, his authentic way of connecting with his teammates, his coaches, this guy, it's great being around him."Despite having made the postseason in three of the past four campaigns, including a Super Bowl appearance in 2018, expectations for the Rams have increased since they acquired Stafford from the Detroit Lions. But with a loaded roster that features stars such as Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey, Robert Woods, Cam Akers, and Stafford, McVay is welcoming the lofty projections."You're not gonna run away from the expectations," McVay said. "Every single team in the NFL has one goal right now, and that's to win a Super Bowl. And I believe ... the teams that have actually accomplished that, they know that you only do that by being where your feet are planted."Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The primary takeaway from the NFL's updated COVID-19 protocols for training camp and the preseason is that both the league and the National Football League Players Association are strongly encouraging players to get vaccinated without mandating that they do so.For vaccinated players, there are virtually no restrictions. But the unvaccinated will be subject to many of the same rules that governed the 2020 season: daily testing, mask mandates, travel and socialization restrictions, and quarantine after high-risk exposures.Training camps are slated to begin in about six weeks. Any unvaccinated player who hopes to be fully vaccinated by then would need to start the two-dose process sooner than later.NBC's Peter King reported in May that the NFL was considering allowing teams with 85% vaccination rates to return to pre-pandemic protocols, just as MLB has done. But not all players are on board, from Washington Football Team defensive end Montez Sweat ...

Calvin Johnson is happy for quarterback Matthew Stafford, who was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Los Angeles Rams this offseason."Matthew is doing well. I'm happy for him because he's happy that he's out in California," the Hall of Fame wide receiver recently said on "The Hook." " ... When he's comfortable, he's good where he's at, you can only expect good things from him. I look forward to seeing him out there."Johnson only wished the Lions had done the same for him when he wanted out of Detroit."It sucked that they didn't let me go but they let Matthew go. But, hey, you know, it is what it is. I'm not mad at Matthew, I love Matthew," said Johnson, who added he would've played for any team, but the former wideout didn't receive Detroit's permission to join another club prior to his retirement despite making a request.Selected second overall in 2007, Johnson enjoyed a historic career with the Lions, becoming the franchise's all-time leader in receptions (731), receiving yards (11,619), and touchdown catches (83) before retiring suddenly at age 30 in 2015.Johnson cited health concerns and the Lions' lack of success during his nine-season tenure as the reasons for ending his career. The legendary receiver didn't walk away on good terms with the team. He hung up his cleats just three years after inking a massive eight-year extension, and Detroit asked him to give back $1.6 million of his signing bonus.Though the two sides have been trying to reconcile, they apparently aren't close."I'm not back in the family with the Lions or anything like that," Johnson said. Safety Tyrann Mathieu wants to stay with the Kansas City Chiefs as long as the club is willing to keep him.If it were up to star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, he'd be Mathieu's teammate throughout the passer's entire Chiefs tenure."He's such a great leader on this team and obviously a special football player," Mahomes said, according to Grant Gordon of NFL.com. "You want him to be here for the long run and you can tell that Chiefs Kingdom is really behind him as the leader of that defense and a leader on this team. Definitely want him to be here as long as he can and as long as I'm here."Mathieu is entering the final season of a three-year contract worth $42 million, and he'll make $14.8 million in 2021. The 29-year-old earned his third first-team All-Pro nod after racking up 62 tackles, six interceptions, and nine passes defended this past season. He’s tallied 10 interceptions and 21 passes defended en route to two Super Bowl appearances with the Chiefs. While it’s unlikely that Mathieu would receive a deal to keep him with Mahomes into 2031, the versatile defensive back is prioritizing location and his relationship with the Chiefs' staff over future compensation."It's probably top of the list," Mathieu said."I've been through a lot in my life, so for me, I think holding onto certain relationships, I think that kind of outweighs any monetary thing, any short feeling or emotion I may be dealing with in the moment," he added.Mathieu is now optimistic about getting an extension from the franchise after expressing pessimism in a since-deleted tweet in May.The two-time Pro Bowler has been an ideal fit in Kansas City's secondary after spending five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals and one with the Houston Texans.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. The finish line of Tom Brady's career may be in sight. In February, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback said he'd consider playing beyond age 45, which is known as his ultimate career goal. But Brady isn't sure he'll stick around much longer and likely won't welcome an idea recently brought up by general manager Jason Licht, who would keep Brady until age 50 if the legendary signal-caller wants."Fifty? That's a long time. Even for me, that's a long time," Brady recently said, according to Jori Epstein of USA Today. "I've always said 45 was the age that I wanted to reach, and that was my goal. This year I'll be 44, so next year I'll be 45. I got a two-year contract."I'm going to be able to obviously play this year, and God forbid anything happens but play next year and then see what happens after that. If I still want to keep playing, I might be able to do that. And if that's enough, then that would be enough."Brady, who turns 44 in August, joined the Buccaneers last season after building a legendary career with the New England Patriots from 2000-19. The three-time regular-season MVP had an immediate impact in Tampa Bay, helping the team win a Super Bowl in its first playoff appearance since 2007.The 14-time Pro Bowler, who's currently signed until the 2022 season, hasn't missed a start due to injury since suffering a season-ending ACL tear early in the 2008 campaign. There's no Plan B for the Green Bay Packers as training camp approaches.Star quarterback Aaron Rodgers skipped voluntary practice and mandatory minicamp. There's no timetable as to when the reigning NFL MVP could return to the field.Head coach Matt LaFleur is sticking to a single plan as the Packers prepare for training camp, with or without Rodgers."We'll have one plan," LaFleur said, according to team reporter Mike Spofford. "We've got what we feel is a pretty good blueprint in terms of how to get our guys ready to play."We feel confident with what we'll have in place with the guys."Second-year quarterback Jordan Love received the majority of first-team reps this offseason. The 22-year-old is attempting to make up for lost time after not taking any preseason reps last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic."Jordan came in with the right mindset," LaFleur said. "Every rep for him is so critical. He's done a great job of embracing just the whole situation, embracing learning from every rep."While Love continues to develop this offseason, the Packers are hopeful they can salvage their relationship with Rodgers. The 37-year-old signal-caller led the Packers to a 13-3 record and passed for 4,299 yards last season. He also posted career highs in both touchdowns (48) and completion percentage (70%).Green Bay has made it to the NFC Championship Game in each of the past two seasons and could be poised for another title run when the team reconvenes for training camp on July 27.The potential of contending for another conference title has the coach excited for what's to come this fall."The challenge is can you re-create that magic that we've been able to the last couple years and become a close-knit, connected team with great player leadership? The Jets amassed a disappointing 23-57 record over the last five seasons, finishing last in the AFC East four times during that span.Quarterback play is partially to blame for the poor results, but Johnson's club has cycled through four different head coaches since 2014.Robert Saleh is the latest coach attempting to turn the franchise around after New York hired him in January following a successful stint with the San Francisco 49ers. The Jets owner feels like he finally found a promising pairing with his coach and general manager Joe Douglas."(Saleh and Douglas are) working together with a dynamic I haven't seen before, great harmony," Johnson said, per Vacchiano."I think you've got to have faith," he added. "I don't think patience is a word I would use. ... With this team, I feel something that could be special."Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Cam Newton wasn't bothered by the New England Patriots' decision to draft Mac Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft."He was the right pick in my opinion," Newton said, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss. "He was the best player available, and that's what the NFL draft is for."Newton also said he supports the move "110%."Additionally, the 32-year-old has been impressed with what he's seen of Jones during mandatory minicamp."He's doing a great job with being everything that's advertised - from a leadership perspective, he's holding himself accountable. That's all you can ask from a young player," Newton said.Although head coach Bill Belichick said in April he was open to a quarterback competition should Jones rise to the occasion, he praised Newton's progress earlier Tuesday, stating the signal-caller is "way ahead of where he was last year at this time."The former MVP endured a difficult 2020 campaign in his first year in New England. Newton went 7-8 as a starter and threw more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (8), though he added another 12 scores on the ground.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The Seattle Seahawks have excused Jamal Adams from mandatory minicamp due to a family issue, head coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday, according to The Athletic's Michael-Shawn Dugar.Carroll added that the Seahawks are expecting Adams to return for training camp, according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. The star safety is reportedly also seeking a new deal. Carroll noted that contract talks have been "ongoing and amicable throughout." Adams is set to earn $9.86 million in 2021, the final year of his rookie deal.Adams is aiming to become the NFL's highest-paid safety while shooting for an extension worth between $16 million and $17 million annually, according to Geoffrey C. Arnold of The Oregonian.Justin Simmons of the Denver Broncos currently holds that distinction after inking a pact worth $15.25 million per year this offseason.Prior to the 2020 season, the Seahawks traded two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and safety Bradley McDougald to the New York Jets for Adams and a fourth-rounder.Adams made his third straight Pro Bowl and was named a second-team All-Pro during his first campaign in Seattle. He set a career high with 9.5 sacks despite missing four games.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Odell Beckham Jr. joined his teammates at practice Tuesday for the first time since tearing his ACL last season. The Cleveland Browns receiver participated in a limited capacity and didn't sport a brace or sleeve on his knee. His work drew the praise of head coach Kevin Stefanski."He looked good to me," Stefanski said, according to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. "He did some individual drills. He did routes on air. He's still progressing through. I think he's seven or eight months post-ACL surgery, and he looks a lot different than I did seven or eight months post-ACL."Stefanski's unsure, though, if Beckham will be a full participant for training camp in July."We'll see," Stefanski added. "He looked good today, Day 1 of minicamp, and then we'll progress and make sure that we're having obviously dialogue with the player, with the training staff, the medical staff, etc."The Browns head coach isn't the only member of the team impressed with Beckham's recovery. Jarvis Landry said Saturday that his teammate looks "even better" than last year.Beckham tore his ACL during a Week 7 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals last year. He was among a group of teammates who worked out with quarterback Baker Mayfield earlier this month. The Browns acquired Beckham in 2019. He recorded over 1,000 receiving yards in his first season with the club before being limited to just 319 yards across seven games last season.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Former New England Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork's son was arrested last month and charged with stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of his father's jewelry, including two Super Bowl rings, according to a police complaint obtained by John Wayne Ferguson of The Galveston County Daily News.D'Aundre Holmes-Wilfork is reportedly charged with theft of property greater than $300,000. The 23-year-old allegedly sold the items after stealing them. He was released on a $300,000 bond. The elder Wilfork reported on May 10 he was missing several items of jewelry, including the two Super Bowl rings, as well as two AFC championship rings and a college football championship ring. He first noticed the items were missing in May 2020 but didn't immediately report them as stolen because he thought they could be at his second home in Florida. The former player was notified online earlier this year that a person claimed to have acquired the rings. Authorities say the items were turned in to the Friendswood Police Department after they were reported missing.Vince entered the NFL as a first-round pick in 2004 following a solid career at Miami. He earned five Pro Bowl nods and won two Super Bowl titles with the Patriots before joining the Houston Texans in 2015 for his final two campaigns. He helped the Hurricanes win the BCS national championship in 2001.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa isn't beating himself up after he threw five interceptions during practice Tuesday."We wanted to be aggressive today within the pass game. We wanted to see if we could fit throws in," Tagovailoa said, according to The Athletic. "We wanted to see what throws we could make under these conditions. We were just trying to throw the ball vertical down the field."Obviously, you want to be smart, but if there's a time to make mistakes, now's a time to make mistakes."The second-year quarterback battled heavy rain Tuesday. However, he declined to use the downpour as a crutch for his showing, instead pointing out the benefits of preparing for inclement weather."We're going to have to play in the rain. We're going to have to play in conditions where the ball is going to be wet, where it's gonna be cold, it's gonna be hot," Tagovailoa said. "Overall, (it) was an alright day."The 23-year-old is poised to be the Dolphins' starter after receiving nine starts as a rookie last season. Tagovailoa struggled with consistency in 2020, averaging 181.4 yards per game while finishing the year with an 87.1 passer rating.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy remains firmly intent on starting Andy Dalton over Justin Fields at quarterback. When asked by Cris Collinsworth if there was "a possible scenario" in which the rookie was under center in Week 1, Nagy reiterated Chicago's plan is to sit the rookie behind the veteran, at least from the start of the season."No, I mean, Andy is our starter," said Nagy. "Again, I can't predict anything. You know how it goes, there's so many things that can happen between today and that Week 1 (game). But Andy is our starter and Justin is our No. 2, and we're going to stick to this plan."The Bears traded up nine spots in this year's draft to select the Ohio State quarterback with the No. 11 overall pick, sending a 2022 first-rounder, a 2022 fourth-rounder, and a 2021 fifth-rounder to the New York Giants.Fields was a Heisman finalist in 2019 and won back-to-back Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year awards to finish his college career. The signal-caller was speculated as a potential top-three pick early in the offseason, but his stock fell during the draft process. The former Buckeyes standout was ultimately the fourth quarterback taken, with Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Zach Wilson of the New York Jets, and Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers selected in the first three picks.Nagy has said multiple times since the draft that Dalton - who signed with Chicago in free agency after starting nine games for the Dallas Cowboys last season - will continue to top the depth chart. While Fields is unlikely to unseat Dalton, Nagy is confident in his team's plan and can't wait to see his young passer at work in the preseason."Andy's played nine great years in this league, and had a lot of success," he said. "And we're excited to be able to have him come in here and do what we think he can do, but yet also teach Justin how to play quarterback, all of us together, and insulate him so that he can maximize his strengths."So we'll have that plan and put it together, but it's going to be really, really fun to have a preseason and see what Justin can do in these preseason games."Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley is ready to officially take over his team's No. 1 pass-catching role.Ridley said Tuesday he feels "no pressure" about becoming the Falcons' main target for the first time in his career after Atlanta traded Julio Jones to the Tennessee Titans, according to ESPN's Michael Rothstein."I played with Julio, Mohamed Sanu, since Day 1. Those guys, I feel like I've been moving toward that way of I can do it by myself," Ridley said. "Obviously, I'm not by myself, we have other players who are really good, but I feel like I've been ready, and I just needed an opportunity to get in those positions."Ridley has improved each year since entering the NFL as a first-round pick in 2018. The Alabama product, who caught 10 touchdowns as a rookie, led the Falcons and set career highs last season with 90 receptions and 1,374 yards.Though the 26-year-old was in Jones' shadow during his first three pro campaigns, last year he proved he could succeed without the seven-time Pro Bowler on the field - Ridley notched 50 catches, 765 yards, and three touchdowns in the seven games Jones missed due to injury." ... By my second year, that's when I realized that's what (Jones is) all about, confidence," Ridley said. "When I realized that, I just started to think that, I didn't think that I'm better than him, but I just believed in myself, and I really think that made me a better player. I really believe in myself."Ridley will share the field with a young star in 2021 after Atlanta drafted tight end Kyle Pitts fourth overall in April.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Derek Carr can't imagine wearing another NFL jersey. The Las Vegas Raiders quarterback was asked Tuesday why he's never demanded a trade despite his team's lack of recent success."I want to do it here. I don't want to do it anywhere else," Carr said, according to Josh Dubow of The Associated Press. " ... I'd probably quit football if I had to do it anywhere else.""I'd rather go down with the ship, if I had to," he added, according to Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.Multiple quarterbacks have reportedly asked for a trade this offseason due to dissatisfaction with their teams, including the Green Bay Packers' Aaron Rodgers and the Houston Texans' Deshaun Watson.Carr has averaged 3,912 passing yards and 25 touchdowns to 10 interceptions per 16 games since entering the NFL in 2014. But the three-time Pro Bowler has posted just one winning season with the Raiders, and his record as a starter is 47-63.The Raiders' only playoff appearance under Carr came in 2016. However, the 30-year-old suffered an injury late in the season, and he was sidelined during the club's wild-card loss against the Houston Texans. The Vegas Golden Knights - who've reached the playoffs in four straight campaigns and opened this year's Stanley Cup semifinal with a victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday - are now fueling Carr's eagerness to play his first postseason game."I told (Golden Knights captain) Mark Stone 'you guys are inspiring us,'" Carr said.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Aaron Rodgers doesn't appear to be sweating his prolonged absence from the Green Bay Packers. As the star quarterback prepares to participate in The Match on July 6 with Tom Brady, Phil Mickelson, and Bryson DeChambeau, he reflected on a peaceful offseason away from football."It's been one of those quiet offseasons you dream about where you can kind of just go through your process on your own, quietly," Rodgers said. "That's all you can ask for as an older player in the league and someone who's been around for a long time and just enjoys that time to yourself, just relax, to not be bothered, to not have any obligations or anything going on."I think that's what this offseason has been about. It's been about really enjoying my time, spending it where I want to spend it, and not feeling like I have to go anywhere, not having any responsibilities."Rodgers skipped Green Bay's mandatory minicamp last week amid a dispute with the organization. His frustration with the Packers organization reportedly stems from issues with general manager Brian Gutekunst and the front office's philosophy. The reigning MVP was also absent from voluntary OTAs while on vacation in Hawaii.Rodgers didn't reveal if he plans to attend the Packers' training camp, which begins on July 26.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. More than half of the players currently on NFL rosters have taken at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Additionally, 16 teams have over 51 players who are fully vaccinated or in the process of receiving their first dose, while at least 95% of first- and second-tier staff are vaccinated on 30 clubs, Pelissero notes. The vaccination hasn't been deemed mandatory, but the league is providing education and incentives while continuing its efforts to get players vaccinated before the 2021 season.NFL owners agreed to relax COVID-19 protocols last month for players and staff who have received both doses. Restrictions on gatherings and practices are expected to be loosened for teams with at least 85% of players vaccinated.Prior to last season, club personnel members were divided into three tiers based on roles. Staff with direct access to players are in Tier 1, those in close proximity to players are in Tier 2, while anyone whose job doesn't require being near players is in Tier 3.Fully vaccinated players are no longer required to wear a mask at team facilities, though unvaccinated players must continue to wear face coverings indoors and outdoors.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Miami Dolphins fans shouldn't be surprised if Xavien Howard doesn't attend the team's mandatory minicamp this week. The star cornerback, who led the NFL with 10 interceptions last season, is unhappy with his current contract situation, and his dissatisfaction mainly stems from being paid less than fellow teammate Byron Jones, a source told Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, Adam Beasley, and Armando Salguero.Howard wasn't present for the first day of minicamp Tuesday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports. Head coach Brian Flores confirmed the absence is related to his deal."It's pretty clear this is a contract situation," Flores said. "We've talked about it internally. That's what I believe it is. We have had discussions and will continue to have those discussions."Howard became one of the NFL's highest-paid cornerbacks after inking a five-year, $75.25-million extension with the Dolphins in 2019. One year later, Miami also handed a massive deal to Jones, signing him for five years and $82.5 million.Jones ($16.5 million) and Howard ($15.05 million) currently rank fifth and sixth in average annual salary for cornerbacks, respectively, according to Spotrac.Howard is set to earn $12 million in non-guaranteed money this year, while Jones will make $14 million guaranteed, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler."X is a unique situation," Flores said. "He was extended and now we're talking about a renegotiation of an extension."He added: "We love X. He's very productive. He's a team player. He's an important player on this team. Unique situation. We want to keep him here."Howard recently hired a new agent, David Canter, who has reportedly contacted the Dolphins about restructuring the deal.Howard, 27, earned his first career All-Pro nod last year after amassing a league-leading 20 pass breakups. Meanwhile, Jones finished his debut season in Miami with two interceptions and four passes defended.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The New England Patriots didn't sign Cam Newton until two months before the 2020 season, forcing the quarterback to learn a new system during a restricted training camp with no preseason play.Newton didn't live up to expectations during his first campaign in New England. The Patriots missed the playoffs for the first time in 12 years, and the 2015 MVP threw just eight touchdown passes against 10 interceptions over 15 starts. But head coach Bill Belichick is confident Newton can bounce back thanks to a more standard offseason program and training camp schedule."Well, Cam's way ahead of where he was last year at this time, there's no question about that," Belichick said Tuesday, according to NESN's Doug Kyed. "As you would expect, he has a good year of experience under his belt, he's able to start the process at the beginning and not being in catch-up mode like he was last year. He was really just starting at this point last season."Belichick added that, like all players who have been in attendance for the club's entire offseason program so far, Newton is stacking "building blocks" and putting learning experiences together."They ask questions on things they need clarification on and build to the next level when they're ready to put another brick on the pile," he continued. "So, that's good for all of us, good for Cam, good for all the players who go through that process."New England was aggressive during free agency while putting more weapons around Newton, signing tight ends Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, and wide receivers Nelson Agholor and Kendrick Bourne.Though the quarterback struggled through the air in 2020, he was still highly effective on the ground while rushing for 592 yards and 12 scores.Belichick did draft an insurance policy at quarterback, selecting former Alabama passer Mac Jones at No. 15 overall. Newton is still the favorite to start, though the Patriots are seemingly leaving the door open for Jones to push for the job during training camp.Newton avoided an injury scare during OTAs in early June. The signal-caller hit his hand on a helmet, but he was able to return for the start of mandatory minicamp after reportedly being diagnosed with a minor bone bruise.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Jacksonville Jaguars are being careful with quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The first overall pick, who was limited in practice last week due to left hamstring tightness, wasn't able to fully participate in Monday's minicamp as head coach Urban Meyer and his staff look to avoid any potential setbacks."Our trainers and (passing game coordinator Brian Schottenheimer) are being a little cautious because right now when you're a month out, you yank a hamstring now you're going to miss the early part of the training camp," Meyer said, according to ESPN's Michael DiRocco."But he actually could play a game if he had to."Lawrence, who's also recovered from a non-throwing shoulder surgery this offseason, didn't participate in 11-on-11 drills Monday but was able to join seven-on-seven activities."It's a little frustrating just not being able to go full speed, but I'm feeling good," Lawrence said of his injury.
