The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set for a major boost ahead of a crucial NFC showdown.Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin is expected to return for Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers after he did not receive an injury designation Friday."I think Godwin's gonna go," head coach Bruce Arians had said earlier Friday, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine. "People don't realize how big a part of our offense he is."Arians added that Godwin was able to practice all week. Godwin missed the last two games with a hamstring injury and previously missed another contest due to a concussion. The 24-year-old Pro Bowler has 11 catches for 143 yards and a touchdown in two starts this season.Meanwhile, running back Leonard Fournette was listed as questionable due to a lingering ankle injury.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. The 31-year-old has amassed over 1,300 yards receiving in each of the last six seasons. The Falcons will carry an 0-5 record into their tilt with the Vikings. Garrett open to reconciliation with Rudolph: 'I'd be happy to make it happen'
Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett is open to making amends with Mason Rudolph after hitting the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback in the head with a helmet last season."If it were to happen, I'd be fine with it,'' Garrett told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. "Not just fine, but I wouldn't mind it and I'd be happy to make it happen if there were a way. I'm not sure how I'd go about that, how I'd broach that."I'm not even sure if he'd want to do that, but I wouldn't have a problem sitting down with him and just not talking about the incident, just talking man to man, how we move forward, and just being better men and football players and not letting something like that happen again."Whether we can do that, I'm not sure, but I'd be willing to extend the olive branch and make that happen."Garrett and Rudolph will be on the same field Sunday for the first time since the incident occurred last November. The two haven't spoken over the last 11 months, though Garrett said he has thought about reaching out."I just don't want any grudges," he said. "I don't have any grudge against him. I don't have any ill intent against him. It's not like I'd have anything against him if I saw him in public or if I saw him in a game and we were suited up. I'd just play him like I play anybody else. ... Other than that night - before that play and after that play - I don't think we spoke two words to each other."Garrett accused Rudolph after the altercation of hurling a racial slur at him on the field, but he couldn't provide proof. The NFL suspended Garrett for the rest of the season and ordered Rudolph to pay a fine for his role in the brawl. Rudolph vehemently denied uttering anything Garrett could have perceived as racist."It'd be like other instances where people agree to disagree," Garrett said. "Just what I heard, just what you said you said and that's what it is. If you say you didn't say that, that's OK, but that's what I heard. It is what it is at the end of the day."We're men and it shouldn't be one situation that keeps you from respecting each other because you can't look past that. If he wants to hold on to it, I'm not going to have any problems with him if he still has a problem with me."Garrett noted that he considered quitting football in the aftermath of the fight and acknowledged he'll always be associated with the incident. He ultimately decided to continue his career and signed a five-year, $125-million contract extension with the Browns in August. The 24-year-old was a candidate for the Defensive Player of the Year award at the time of his suspension and is off to another strong start in 2020 with six sacks through five games.Rudolph hasn't appeared in a contest this season after returning to a backup role behind a healthy Ben Roethlisberger.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. The New England Patriots canceled practice Friday after a player tested positive for COVID-19, reports NFL Network's Mike Giardi.New England, which encountered COVID-19 issues throughout the last two weeks, is awaiting confirmation on one other positive test, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss and Field Yates. The Patriots are supposed to face the Denver Broncos on Sunday in a game that was postponed from Week 5. The contest remains on track to be played as scheduled and contingency plans haven't been discussed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Patriots reopened their facilities Wednesday and held their first practice of the week Thursday following a multi-day closure designed to stymie a possible COVID-19 spread.Defensive tackle Byron Cowart had been the most recent Patriot to test positive, with his result coming Oct. 10, two days before the team was set to play the Broncos. The Patriots activated quarterback Cam Newton, cornerback Stephon Gilmore, and defensive tackle Bill Murray from the COVID-19 reserve before Thursday's practice.New England and Denver both had their byes moved to Week 5 in light of the Patriots' recent infections.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. tested negative for COVID-19 a day after being sent home with an illness, a source told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. All other Browns players and personnel reportedly tested negative as well. The news means Cleveland is cleared for its crucial divisional matchup Sunday against the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers.Beckham is still listed as questionable for Sunday following the negative result, as are quarterback Baker Mayfield due to a rib injury and fellow wideout Jarvis Landry due to hip and rib issues, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.Mayfield was able to practice fully Friday and said earlier in the week that he intends to play.Beckham will remain away from the team facility Friday as per the league's coronavirus protocol, added Pelissero. The former New York Giants standout has racked up 21 catches and 294 yards in five games this season. NFL Week 6 best bets: Keep fading Eagles, Falcons
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. After an undefeated Week 4, I went 1-2 last week with a near-miss on the Vikings-Seahawks total. Here are my best bets for Week 6.Ravens (-7.5, 47.5) at Eagles, Oct. 18 @ 1 p.m. ETThe first bet I made this week was the Ravens -7, and I'm still buying here despite the hook. Not only is Baltimore in an excellent spot as a big road favorite, but it should dominate a key matchup against the injury-riddled Eagles.Philadelphia's O-line has been an issue all year and is a key reason for the team's 1-4 start against the spread. Since drafting Carson Wentz in 2016, the Eagles are 29-11-1 ATS when allowing fewer than three sacks and 8-26 ATS when allowing three or more in a game.Wentz was sacked five times in last week's loss to the Steelers, while the Ravens' blitz-happy defense brought down Joe Burrow seven times in last week's win over the Bengals. If the Eagles' injured front can't withstand Baltimore's relentless pressure, Philadelphia will be lucky to stay within double digits.Pick: Ravens -7.5Falcons at Vikings (-4, 54.5), Oct. 18 @ 1 p.m.The Texans earned a statement win over the Jaguars last week after firing their coach, so maybe I'm the fool for thinking the Falcons will struggle in a similar spot. Yet nothing about this matchup suggests this line should be this short.Despite a 1-4 record, the Vikings have been one of the better teams in the league on a week-to-week basis per advanced metrics. The Falcons (0-5) have not been as impressive, thanks in part to a calamitous defense that's only getting worse as injuries mount.Despite the way the defense has played, Atlanta slapped the interim tag on defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who hasn't coached since 2011 and went 1-9 ATS in his final 10 games that season. Teams to replace their coach midseason are 14-23 ATS since 2000, and the Falcons are in a bad spot to buck that trend Sunday.Pick: Vikings -4Chiefs (-4.5, 57.5) at Bills, Oct. 19 @ 5 p.m.A week ago, I recommended always targeting at least one high total each week until oddsmakers priced out that inefficiency. This week, we're taking a shot on the highest total of the week, which still isn't high enough given the teams involved. The key dilemma in defending Patrick Mahomes is whether to blitz him and risk leaving receivers open, or rush four and give him extra time to shred the secondary. Neither seems to work for the Bills, who have blitzed more than all but one team this year but are tied for the sixth-fewest pressures in the league. In essence, they'll be at Mahomes' mercy no matter what they do.The Chiefs' defense has been exposed by dual-threat quarterbacks in the past and should struggle to contain Josh Allen, who ranks second among QBs in passing touchdowns (14) and third in rushing touchdowns (3). This is also a favorable matchup for Buffalo's passing attack. Against Kansas City last week, Derek Carr recorded 234 of his 347 passing yards over the middle of the field, where Allen is at his best.Totals above 57 have gone 16-6-1 to the over since 2000, including 3-1 when Mahomes is involved with an average combined score of 78.8 points. There may not be a total high enough for this game, and 57.5 certainly isn't it.Pick: Over 57.5(Odds source: theScore Bet)C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. NFL Week 6 teaser: A pair of live 'dogs in the NFC East
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. It was back to winning ways with our Week 5 teaser. Now let's make that the start of a lengthy winning run. Here's our top teaser on the board.Washington @ Giants, Oct. 18 @ 1 p.m. ETLine: Washington +3Teaser line: Washington +9Laying points with bad teams is a surefire way to lose money long term in betting. The Giants have done nothing to earn the tag as favorites other than being the home team in a stadium with no fans. Daniel Jones' expected completion percentage against the reeling Cowboys defense was just 53.3%. Now he faces a Washington secondary that ranks fifth in efficiency against the pass and has all the tools up front to exploit a serious mismatch against a struggling Giants offensive line, ranking fourth in sack percentage.Kyle Allen will start his first full game for Washington on Sunday after his Week 5 start was cut short by a concussion. He's not a world-beater by any means, but the offense showed signs of life with him at the helm, including an impressive 11-play, 73-yard touchdown drive capped off by an Allen touchdown run. He's got a true No. 1 receiver to target and an emerging running back in Antonio Gibson, which will help him at least exploit a pedestrian Giants defense.Jones, meanwhile, hasn't thrown a touchdown pass since Week 1 and he's got a much tougher matchup here than meets the eye. There will be constant pressure in his face, and while Devonta Freeman has looked capable, he's not going to lighten the burden on the young quarterback. It won't be pretty, but Washington matches up well here to at the very least keep this a one-score game.Cardinals @ Cowboys, Oct. 19 @ 8:15 p.m.Line: Cowboys +1.5Teaser line: Cowboys +7.5As terrible and heartbreaking as Dak Prescott's injury was, the bottom hasn't completely fallen out for the Cowboys. Few backups in the league are more capable than Andy Dalton, and with the weapons at his disposal, there's no doubt this offense will keep ticking along. The bigger hindrance to Dallas' ability to move the ball has been the offensive line, but the Cardinals are less equipped to exploit that weakness with Chandler Jones placed on season-ending injured reserve this week. Without pressure on Dalton, the Cowboys' trio of No. 1 receivers is well-suited to exploit an Arizona secondary that ranks 26th in efficiency. The lookahead line here had the Cowboys favored by three points but swung as many as six points before settling back at +1.5. It's a drastic overreaction to Prescott's injury, and we haven't seen nearly enough from the Cardinals to suggest they warrant laying points on the road. Their opponents this season have a combined record of 7-17, and they're still just 3-2. There's too much value on the Cowboys here to pass up, especially getting them at more than a touchdown.Full teaser: Washington +9, Cowboys +7.5 ($110 to win $100)(Odds source: theScore Bet)Alex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. NFL upset of the week: Browns will score rare win at Steelers
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. Each week during the NFL season, we'll focus on one underdog with a chance to pull off the outright upset. Last week, the Jaguars (+220) stumbled in the second half against the Texans, bringing our season record to 2-3 with +0.85 units won on betting underdog moneylines. This week, we're buying into the hype on the Browns (+160), who are getting just over a field goal against the unproven Steelers.Buy the better teamAre we sure the Steelers are good? They're 4-0 but have yet to face a team with a winning record. Their four opponents have a combined three wins, and Pittsburgh won by 10 or fewer points against all of them.Compare that to the Browns. They dominated the Cowboys (2-3) before Dallas' meager comeback attempt, and Cleveland controlled the game against the Colts (3-2), who have been analytic darlings this season. Cleveland is above Pittsburgh in PFF rankings (No. 6 to No. 13) and would be higher in DVOA if not for a Week 1 blowout loss to the Ravens. That loss skews most of the Browns' metrics, who have looked like a well-oiled machine under Kevin Stefanski during this four-game winning streak. Cleveland opened as an underdog against the Cowboys and Colts and is already drawing love from wiseguys in this underdog spot, too.Matchup favors the 'dogLet's get this out of the way now: the Browns haven't beaten the Steelers on the road since 2003, losing 16 straight times in that spot. This Cleveland team is better than those before it, and it matches up well with a vulnerable Pittsburgh squad. The Steelers' offense has looked rather pedestrian this year, and their pass defense has been quietly vulnerable. Neither has come back to bite them, as their elite pass rush has feasted against four of the league's worst offensive lines.Don't expect that against the Browns, who easily have the best pass protection in the league, per PFF. They've allowed just seven sacks this year and no more than two in a game. In its last 26 contests, Pittsburgh is 11-3 when it records at least four sacks and 3-9 when it doesn't.If the Steelers can't generate pressure on Baker Mayfield, their secondary will be hard-pressed to keep up with Cleveland's offensive weapons. That alone could be enough to swing the balance toward the Browns. Why the Browns will winThe Steelers have been shaky as favorites for years now, and they're in a tough spot against a Browns team equipped to mitigate Pittsburgh's greatest strength. The Colts' top-ranked defense couldn't corral Cleveland's offense a week ago; the Steelers will be lucky to do so this week.(Odds source: theScore Bet)C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Report: Bell plans to sign with Dolphins, Chiefs, or Bills
Running back Le'Veon Bell intends to sign with either the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs, or Buffalo Bills and could make his decision as early as Thursday, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.Bell was released by the New York Jets on Tuesday, bringing an end to his tumultuous tenure after 17 games. The Dolphins, Bills, and Chiefs, incidentally, represent the Jets' next three opponents. However, Bell wouldn't be able to play for the Dolphins on Sunday because COVID-19 protocols require five days of preliminary testing.Bell appeared in only two games for the Jets this season, missing three others with a hamstring injury. The two-time All-Pro rushed for 74 yards on 19 carries and had three receptions for 39 yards. From 2013-17 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bell topped 1,800 total yards three times and earned three Pro Bowl selections. The Jets still owe Bell roughly $6 million for the remainder of the season. The team can subtract whatever Bell signs for from its $6-million figure.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Titans trade Correa to Jaguars
The Tennessee Titans have traded disgruntled linebacker Kamalei Correa to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team announced.Jacksonville traded a sixth-round selection to Tennessee in exchange for Correa and a seventh-round pick.Correa requested a trade early Wednesday after he was a healthy scratch Tuesday against the Buffalo Bills. His request was granted later in the day when he was dealt to the AFC South rival. He played only 39 snaps this season prior to the trade. The 26-year-old finished last season with 37 tackles and five sacks across 16 appearances, including five starts. He's yet to start a game in 2020 and has notched just two tackles over three outings. The Boise State product signed a one-year, $2.25-million deal with Tennessee in the offseason. New York Jets head coach Adam Gase evaded questions Wednesday about his usage of running back Le'Veon Bell, who was released from a big-money contract hours earlier."It's irrelevant at this point," Gase said, according to SNY.Bell came to the Jets in March 2019 as a marquee free agent but only appeared in 17 games. He averaged a career-worst 3.2 yards per carry last season and posted 3.9 yards per carry in two outings this year. From 2013-17 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bell averaged 4.3 yards per carry. In three of those five seasons, he averaged 4.7 yards or more. He sat out the 2018 campaign after refusing to sign a second franchise tag with the Steelers."It didn't work out," said Gase, whose Jets are still without a win this season. "We have to focus on this game (against the Miami Dolphins) right now."Bell was a two-time All-Pro with the Steelers hailed for his versatility out of the backfield. The Jets deployed him more conventionally, seemingly reluctant to split him out wide like a receiver or get the ball to him in space."I'm sure he'll get an opportunity somewhere else, and we'll see what happens," Gase responded when asked if Bell can still produce. The Jets still owe Bell about $6 million for the remainder of the season. The 28-year-old originally signed a four-year deal worth $52.5 million. Gase reportedly opposed the contract when former general manager Mike Maccagnan awarded it, though he was said to think highly of Bell as a player.Gase also told reporters Wednesday that he'll continue to call offensive plays for the Jets, who rank last in the NFL in points per game.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Flacco draws 2nd straight start for Jets as Darnold remains sidelined
Joe Flacco will start at quarterback for the New York Jets again in Week 6 as Sam Darnold continues to nurse a shoulder injury, head coach Adam Gase said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.Flacco started in Week 5, throwing for 195 yards and a touchdown in a 30-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He has 172 career NFL starts, making all but nine of them for the Baltimore Ravens.Darnold, 23, will miss his second consecutive game after sustaining a shoulder injury on Oct. 1. The third-year signal-caller threw for three touchdowns and four interceptions through the first four weeks of the season.Flacco, a former Super Bowl MVP, signed with the Jets this past offseason to back up Darnold. The 35-year-old spent the opening portion of the campaign rehabbing from neck surgery. The winless Jets will meet the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Titans' Correa requests trade after healthy scratch
Tennessee Titans linebacker Kamalei Correa has requested a trade due to a lack of playing time, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero.Correa was a healthy scratch Tuesday against the Buffalo Bills, and he's played only 39 snaps this season. The Titans reportedly intend to honor his request and will release him if they can't find a trade partner.Correa, 26, finished last season with 37 tackles and five sacks across 16 appearances, which included five starts. He's yet to start a game in 2020 and has just two tackles in three outings. The Boise State product signed a one-year, $2.25-million deal with Tennessee in the offseason. His role was reduced once the Titans added Jadeveon Clowney and Vic Beasley to their stable of pass-rushers.Correa has tallied 77 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, and 8.5 sacks over his Titans tenure. He's started nine of a possible 32 games over three years in Tennessee.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
10 teams that could sign Le'Veon Bell
The New York Jets cut running back Le'Veon Bell on Tuesday evening after failing to find a trade partner.Bell's large contract was reportedly the primary impediment to a trade, and the offset language in his Jets deal makes it likely he'll sign with a new team for the veteran minimum while continuing to collect the approximately $6 million New York still owes him. Most NFL teams could find a use for Bell on a minimum deal, but these 10 clubs stand out as the best fits and most likely destinations for the two-time All-Pro:SteelersIt would certainly be awkward, but let's not forget Pittsburgh reportedly inquired about trading for its former bell-cow running back at the deadline last year. Bell's best seasons came while with the Steelers, who allowed him to approach the line of scrimmage with his patented patience and glide between the tackles, the strength of their offensive line. He recorded three campaigns with 1,800-plus total yards in Pittsburgh. The Steelers aren't suffering without Bell, but they're also not better off. James Conner has struggled to stay healthy, and he isn't a game-breaker on Bell's level. The depth behind Conner is pedestrian at best, too, as Anthony McFarland, Benny Snell Jr., and Jaylen Samuels haven't proven to be major contributors. The most appealing aspect of a Steelers-Bell reunion from the team's perspective is that Conner is a pending free agent, and Bell knows better than anyone that Pittsburgh doesn't want to pay a premium for a running back. The Steelers could be inclined to let Conner go and then renegotiate a more manageable salary with Bell, who no longer possesses the same leverage he had in previous contract disputes with Pittsburgh.Cardinals Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyArizona injected life into its offense last season with a deadline deal for Kenyan Drake. The former Dolphins misfit rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown just days after the trade, quickly grabbing the starting job over David Johnson. He finished that year averaging 5.2 yards per carry with eight touchdowns across eight games in the desert. Johnson was traded in the offseason, and Drake returned on a one-year, $8.48-million contract as the presumptive feature back. The early production from Drake in 2020 has been less than stellar (3.7 yards per carry), and his short-term contract won't prohibit Arizona from searching for another midseason addition to spark its offense.Kyler Murray's time is now, and the Cardinals know it. They boosted Murray's receiving arsenal this offseason with the blockbuster acquisition of DeAndre Hopkins. Dealing for Bell could do the same for the club's backfield, and his elite receiving skills make him a tantalizing fit in Kliff Kingsbury's pass-heavy Air Raid offense.WashingtonWashington head coach Ron Rivera alluded to the NFC East’s openness as one reason he made a quarterback switch prior to Week 5. Acquiring a three-time Pro Bowler like Bell would certainly fall in line with that approach. At 1-4, Washington remains just one game back of the now Dak Prescott-less Cowboys. As the Eagles and Giants deal with their own issues, the division crown seems within reach. While rookie tailback Antonio Gibson has been a pleasant surprise as a runner and receiver, a one-two punch of Gibson and Bell would reach another level. Both players are excellent pass-catchers - a skill that offensive coordinator Scott Turner showed he can maximize during his days coaching Christian McCaffrey in Carolina.Seahawks Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThe Seahawks didn't possess enough cap space to trade for Bell and the $6.4 million remaining on his 2020 deal. But the equation changes now that he'll likely come very cheap.Adding Bell would give Seattle an incredible tandem when he's put alongside Chris Carson. He would help to ease Carson's workload, and Bell would be an immediate upgrade over veteran Carlos Hyde, who missed the last two games due to injury.Bell has hinted that the Jets' struggles frustrated him, and he wants to win. There may not be a better opportunity to do that than with the undefeated Seahawks.ChiefsClyde Edwards-Helaire was the talk of the town in Week 1 following his magnificent debut, but he's been mostly bottled up since. If their rushing attack is the Chiefs' one offensive weakness, why not jump at the chance to add a player of Bell's caliber? It may be hard to envision because of how bad he looked in the Jets' rigid offense, but Bell's skill set would fit perfectly in Kansas City. His route-running abilities would give Andy Reid yet another matchup advantage to exploit, and Bell's running style is tailored for an offensive line with synergy.49ers Thearon W. Henderson / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe 49ers couldn't afford to trade for Bell and his remaining salary, but now that his price tag will probably be lower, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch could be licking their chops. San Francisco was linked to Bell before he signed with the Jets, and the team likely still believes he's a fit for Shanahan's zone-running scheme.Raheem Mostert has been a revelation in the Bay Area, but Tevin Coleman can't stay healthy, and Jerick McKinnon comes with major health concerns too. Signing Bell could allow the 49ers to go all-in as a running team to help mask some of Jimmy Garoppolo's recent struggles.DolphinsThe Dolphins are far from contenders, so if winning games is Bell's primary motivation, he'll likely be looking elsewhere. But Bell reportedly loves the city of Miami, which might help make the Dolphins a more attractive destination.Miami's running back depth chart may be the NFL's thinnest. Myles Gaskin, a 2019 seventh-round pick, has started ahead of Matt Breida and Jordan Howard recently, but all three would be hard-pressed to get on the field for most teams.Buccaneers Matthew Stockman / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Bucs know their Tom Brady era - and the Super Bowl window that comes with it - will be short-lived, so they've been stocking their roster with veterans. That extends to the backfield, where LeSean McCoy isn't providing much value and Leonard Fournette can't stay healthy, leaving Ronald Jones as the Buccaneers' primary tailback. But Jones is a subpar receiver, and Brady has always made good use of a pass-catcher out of the backfield (it was Kevin Faulk early in his career, and James White more recently). Bell would be the best receiving back to ever link up with Brady.BillsThe Bills are ascending Super Bowl contenders despite receiving relatively paltry production from young running backs Devin Singletary and Zack Moss. The Stefon Diggs trade has instantly become a smashing success, so Buffalo could try adding another player who was a malcontent on his previous team and offering him a fresh start.Patriots Maddie Meyer / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Patriots are seemingly always on the lookout for bargains on veteran reclamation projects, and it's not like their running back room is overflowing with stars. Is Bell a fit? It's tough to say. But concerns about players conforming to "The Patriot Way" are often vastly overblown. There were few Cam Newton suitors until the Patriots came calling, reportedly due to his abrasive personality. Now he's been a model employee while thriving when healthy this season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Chandler Jones to undergo season-ending biceps surgery
Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury announced Wednesday that edge rusher Chandler Jones will undergo biceps surgery and miss the remainder of the season, according to Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com.Kingsbury added that he believes the All-Pro defender faces three-to-four months of recovery.Jones had been seeking nonsurgical options to address the injury, which knocked him out of Arizona's win over the New York Jets in Week 5. Kingsbury said postgame that Jones was "probably" done for the year. The 30-year-old Jones posted one sack in five appearances this season. He had a career-high 19 sacks in 2019 en route to a runner-up finish in Defensive Player of the Year voting.Jones who's in his fifth season with the Cardinals, is scheduled to earn $15.5 million in base salary in 2021, which marks the final year of his contract.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kansas City Chiefs (4-1)Previous rank: 1L'Jarius Sneed was arguably the Chiefs' most reliable cornerback before he landed on injured reserve with a broken collarbone.3. Green Bay Packers (4-0)Previous rank: 2Krys Barnes' athleticism at linebacker has been an important asset to a Packers defense that entered the season needing to replace Blake Martinez and improve against the run.4. Tennessee Titans (4-0)Previous rank: 8Kristian Fulton had an interception in Week 2 and notched a pivotal sack of Kirk Cousins in Week 3. The second-round defensive back could turn out to be a steal.5. Baltimore Ravens (4-1) Scott Taetsch / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 5Patrick Queen is up to 42 tackles, two forced fumbles, two sacks, and one touchdown, putting the linebacker on pace for a gigantic statistical season.6. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-0)Previous rank: 7Chase Claypool is here because of his four-touchdown outing in Week 5, but he had produced a few eye-popping plays before that, including an 84-yard score against the Denver Broncos.7. Los Angeles Rams (4-1)Previous rank: 9Jordan Fuller has helped stabilize a Rams defense that was on the ropes more often than not last year. Los Angeles ranks second in pass defense and third in points allowed per game this season.8. Buffalo Bills (4-1)Previous rank: 4Gabriel Davis has a couple of touchdowns and a few splash plays to his name. However, the Bills haven't given any of their rookies a ton of opportunities.9. New Orleans Saints (3-2)Previous rank: 10Cesar Ruiz hasn't been outstanding, but the Saints don't have many rookies after selecting only four players in the draft.10. Cleveland Browns (4-1) Jason Miller / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 12Jedrick Wills has been a massive upgrade over Greg Robinson, allowing the Browns' offense to take off with him at left tackle.11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2)Previous rank: 6Antoine Winfield Jr. has produced highlights in coverage, run defense, and rushing the passer, making him a prime contender for the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.12. Las Vegas Raiders (3-2)Previous rank: 18Henry Ruggs has been limited by injuries, but Raiders fans have already seen the speedster's mouth-watering big-play potential. The first-rounder burned the Chiefs with two receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown in a Week 5 win.13. New England Patriots (2-2)Previous rank: 13Michael Onwenu has quietly become a Bill Belichick favorite, earning snaps at left guard, right guard, and right tackle in light of the Patriots' injury issues up front.14. Chicago Bears (4-1)Previous rank: 16Jaylon Johnson has held his own as the No. 2 cornerback in Chicago, although he's taken a step back recently after a fairly hot start.15. Indianapolis Colts (3-2) Gregory Shamus / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 11Jonathan Taylor has responded to being thrust into a featured role following Marlon Mack's injury with 285 yards and three touchdowns on the ground over his last four games.16. Carolina Panthers (3-2)Previous rank: 17Jeremy Chinn has evolved into a playmaker for the Panthers, who moved him to linebacker after drafting him as a safety. He leads the team with 44 tackles.18. San Francisco 49ers (2-3)Previous rank: 14Brandon Aiyuk has two touchdowns in four appearances, and 12 of his 16 touches have resulted in first downs. The dynamic receiver has been one of the few positives for the 49ers offensively.19. Dallas Cowboys (2-3)Previous rank: 19CeeDee Lamb leads the Cowboys in receiving despite playing alongside a pair of 1,000-yard wideouts in Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup.20. Philadelphia Eagles (1-3-1) Rob Carr / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 21K'Von Wallace has stayed healthy (knock on wood), and in Philadelphia - where players drop like flies - the best ability is availability.21. Miami Dolphins (2-3)Previous rank: 25Brandon Jones might be the best player, thus far, from the Dolphins' somewhat disappointing rookie class. Of course, this could easily change if Tua Tagovailoa ever gets to play.22. Houston Texans (1-4)Previous rank: 26Ross Blacklock leads all Texans rookies in snaps, but nobody in Houston's class has really delivered yet.23. Minnesota Vikings (1-4)Previous rank: 20Justin Jefferson has filled Stefon Diggs' shoes as well as anyone could have expected. The LSU product's 371 yards top Adam Thielen, though Thielen has six touchdown catches to Jefferson's one.24. Los Angeles Chargers (1-4)Previous rank: 22Justin Herbert only needed three games for the Chargers to decide Tyrod Taylor wasn't going to get his job back, and he nearly beat the Saints on the road in his fourth.25. Detroit Lions (1-3) Stacy Revere / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious rank: 23Jonah Jackson has been a solid addition to the Lions' offensive line. However, Detroit is still waiting for its top three picks - Jeff Okudah, D'Andre Swift, and Julian Okwara - to make an impact.26. Denver Broncos (1-3)Previous rank: 28Jerry Jeudy posted at least 50 yards in each of his first four games before the bye, and he's been more sure-handed since his multi-drop debut.27. Cincinnati Bengals (1-3-1)Previous rank: 24Joe Burrow looks to be the real deal, and that's all that truly matters for the Bengals as they continue their rebuild.28. Atlanta Falcons (0-5)Previous rank: 29Mykal Walker has had his moments, but obviously not enough of them to put out the dumpster fire that engulfs the Falcons' defense.29. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4)Previous rank: 27James Robinson leads all rookies with 516 scrimmage yards through the first five weeks. The Jaguars' early-round rookies have shown promise, but the first-year player who stands out most wasn't even drafted.30. Titans blow out Bills in Tuesday action to stay undefeated
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The wait between games caused by the NFL’s first COVID-19 outbreak left the Tennessee Titans depleted. They’re still undefeated.Ryan Tannehill threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Titans routed the Buffalo Bills 42-16 on a rare Tuesday night in a showdown between two of the NFL’s five remaining undefeated teams pushed back two days after a couple more positive tests for Tennessee last week. The Titans (4-0) continued their best start since winning their first 10 games in 2008 despite getting on the field the past three days since their last game Sept. 27 in Minnesota.Malcolm Butler intercepted two passes, the second he returned 68 yards, and both set up short touchdowns for Tennessee. Kareem Orr’s recovery of a fumbled kickoff set up Tannehill’s fourth TD for 21 points off Buffalo’s three turnovers. Kalif Raymond’s 40-yard punt return also set up a 1-yard TD run by Derrick Henry. The Bills (4-1) had not won five straight games since 2004, and they came in looking for the franchise’s best start since 1991 when Buffalo reached the Super Bowl. They also played without starting cornerbacks with Tre’Davious White inactive because of a back injury and Levi Wallace on injured reserve.Starting wide receiver John Brown also was out for Buffalo, which had scored at least 30 points in the past three games.Josh Allen came in second in the NFL in yards passing. He threw for 263 yards and two TDs. Stephon Diggs had 10 catches for 106 yards. The Titans needed the turnovers with seven key players on the reserve/COVID-19 list led by wide receivers Corey Davis and Adam Humphries and defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons. They also were missing a couple assistant coaches and two players activated off that reserve list earlier Tuesday were scratched. The Titans got a big boost on the Bills’ opening drive.Allen’s pass went off Andre Roberts’ hands right to Butler, and he returned the interception 29 yards to the Bills 16. Two plays later, Tannehill hit A.J. Brown, who missed the last two games with an injured knee, for a 16-yard TD for the quick lead. The Bills tied it up with a methodical 15-play drive converting four third downs, taking advantage of a Titans’ defense playing a pair of rookies in end Larrell Murchison and cornerback Chris Jackson. Allen tossed the ball to Isaiah McKenzie for a 3-yard TD tying it up, the ninth different Bill to catch a TD pass from Allen. The Titans scored 21 of the next 24 points.Tennessee led 21-10 at halftime after Tannehill ran in from 10 yards seconds before the half. Butler refused to go down after picking off an Allen throw to Gabriel Davis late in the third, and Tannehill found Jonnu Smith for a 4-yard TD and a 28-10 lead three plays later.HEY YOUThe Titans had roughly 8,600 fans on hand for this game. Tennessee originally was going to have fans Oct. 4 for the first time this season, but the outbreak pushed that game with Pittsburgh to Oct. 25. Zip ties were used to keep fans from switching seats, and neck gaiters were given out.INJURIESTitans left tackle Taylor Lewan had been questionable with a shoulder injury, and he went to the sideline late in the second quarter after Bills tackle Harrison Phillips landed on him. Lewan went immediately to the sideline and was replaced by Ty Sambrailo, but he returned in the third. ... Rookie RB Darrynton Evans aggravated a hamstring in the second quarter. Jets release Le'Veon Bell
The New York Jets released veteran running back Le'Veon Bell on Tuesday, the team announced."After having conversations with Le'Veon and his agent and exploring potential trade options over the past couple of days, we have made the decision to release Le'Veon," general manager Joe Douglas said in a statement. "The organization appreciates Le'Veon's efforts during his time here and we know he worked hard to make significant contributions to this team. We believe this decision is in the best interests of both parties and wish him future success."The surprise move comes just hours after reports first surfaced indicating the Jets were shopping Bell in an attempt to trade him before this year's deadline. It's a disastrous end to Bell's time in New York, which began when he signed a four-year, $52.5-million deal in 2019. He heads back to the open market having played in just 17 games for the Jets while tallying 863 rushing yards, leaving behind the effects of the investment gone wrong. The Jets effectively paid $27 million in guarantees for that short stint, according to Over The Cap. Of the remaining $6 million owed to him this season, the team can only recoup the value of a deal he signs elsewhere, which is certain to be minimal, given the offset language.
NFL not in favor of playoff bubble: 'We're proceeding as is'
The NFL is not looking to navigate away from its current playoff format in favor of a postseason bubble despite numerous recent COVID-19 outbreaks."We're proceeding as is," NFL executive Troy Vincent said Tuesday, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The league's chief medical officer, Dr. Allen Sills, stated a bubble wouldn't completely prevent infections from occurring."We don't feel that is the safest course of action for us," Sills said.Sills also expressed concerns about the emotional and behavioral toll on isolated players."That is just as much of a health and safety concern as COVID-19 infection," Sills added. The league acknowledged in August it could institute a bubble for the postseason in order to guard against COVID-19 issues. The NBA and NHL both executed playoff bubbles to perfection, finishing their respective seasons without a single positive test for COVID-19.However, the NFL did seem open to the possibility of extending the regular season and pushing back the Super Bowl."If there's one consistent theme to our season, it's flexibility and adapting," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told the media, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. After coasting through the opening weeks of the season, the NFL has encountered several recent issues stemming from the coronavirus pandemic. The league has already rescheduled several games, while the New England Patriots became the first team to have a positive test sideline a starting quarterback after Cam Newton contracted the coronavirus before New England's Week 4 clash with the Kansas City Chiefs.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. 5 teams that could trade for Le'Veon Bell
Le'Veon Bell is on the market. The New York Jets are reportedly shopping the former All-Pro running back, who's in the midst of another frustrating campaign in the Big Apple. The asking price is believed to be low, with The MMQB's Albert Breer saying the Jets would take a late-round draft pick and/or back-end player. Interest should be high. Here are the teams that could pull the trigger on a deal for Bell, who has no guaranteed money left on his contract after the 2020 season:SteelersIt would certainly be awkward, but let's not forget Pittsburgh inquired about trading for its former bell cow at the deadline last year. Bell's best years were with the Steelers, who allowed him to approach the line of scrimmage with his patented patience and glide between the tackles on their offensive line's strength. The Steelers haven't necessarily suffered without Bell, but it would be foolish to suggest they've been better off without him. James Conner has struggled to stay healthy and isn't the type of gamebreaker that Bell is. The depth behind Conner is pedestrian at best. Anthony McFarland, Benny Snell Jr., and Jaylen Samuels haven't proven to be difference-makers.Here would be the best part about a Steelers-Bell reunion: Conner is a pending free agent, and Bell knows better than anyone that Pittsburgh doesn't want to pay premiums for a running back. While no team would likely keep Bell around for a $13.5-million cap hit in 2021, the Steelers could be inclined to let Conner go and renegotiate a more manageable salary with Bell, who no longer possesses the type of leverage he had in previous contract disputes with Pittsburgh.Cardinals Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyArizona injected life into its offense last season with a deadline deal for Kenyan Drake. Johnson was traded in the offseason, and Drake returned on a one-year, $8.48-million contract as the presumptive feature back.Early returns from Drake in 2020 have been less than stellar, and his short-term contract won't prohibit the Cardinals from dipping their toes back into the trade market in search of another tailback to spark their offense. Kyler Murray's time is now, and the Cardinals know it. They boosted Murray's receiving arsenal this offseason with the blockbuster acquisition of DeAndre Hopkins. They could do the same to his backfield by dealing for Bell, whose elite receiving skills make him a tantalizing fit in Kliff Kingsbury's pass-heavy Air Raid offense.WashingtonRon Rivera alluded to the NFC East’s openness as one reason he made a quarterback switch last Sunday. Acquiring a former All-Pro running back like Bell could seriously support that statement. At 1-4, Washington remains just one game back of the now Dak Prescott-less Cowboys. With the Eagles and Giants dealing with their own issues, the division certainly seems within reach. While rookie tailback Antonio Gibson has been a pleasant surprise as a runner and receiver, a one-two punch of Gibson and Bell is another level. But, adding Bell would give Seattle an incredible one-two punch with Chris Carson. He would help Carson carry the load and is an immediate upgrade over veteran running back Carlos Hyde, who missed the last two games due to injury.Seattle won’t have to look hard to find Jets GM Joe Douglas' phone number. The two sides brokered a deal for Jamal Adams in the offseason. For a running back currently frustrated with his team's lack of success, there may not be a better remedy for the disgruntled Bell than the undefeated Seahawks.ChiefsClyde Edwards-Helaire was the talk of the town in Week 1 following his magnificent debut, but he's been more or less bottled up since then. If the rushing attack is the Chiefs' one offensive "weakness," why wouldn't they send a late-round pick or two for the chance to reignite Bell's career? It may be hard to envision because of how bad he's looked in the Jets' rigid offense, but Bell's skill set would actually fit perfectly in Kansas City. His route-running abilities would give Andy Reid another matchup advantage to exploit - as if the Chiefs don't have enough - and his running style is tailored for an offensive line with synergy.Bonus: Other AFC East teamsIt's tough to imagine the Jets trading Bell within the AFC East. That's precisely the sort of deal that comes back to haunt a team twice a year for the next half-decade. But, if the Jets are willing to accept the risk of intra-division embarrassment just to get Bell off the roster, their three AFC East rivals each make sense as a trade partner. The Bills are ascending Super Bowl contenders despite relatively paltry production from young running backs Devin Singletary and Zack Moss. With the Stefon Diggs trade already a smashing success, the Bills could look to continue wheeling and dealing. The Dolphins are far from contenders but have what might be the thinnest running back depth chart in the NFL. Myles Gaskin, a 2019 seventh-round pick, has started ahead of Matt Breida and Jordan Howard in recent weeks, but all three would be hard-pressed to get on the field for most teams. Bell reportedly loves the city of Miami, so that might help facilitate a deal.A Jets-Patriots trade is almost impossible to imagine. Only two such deals have occurred this century - both were within the last 13 months, so perhaps the icy relations between the two franchises has thawed. The Patriots are seemingly always on the lookout for bargains on veteran reclamation projects, and it's not like their running backs room is overflowing with stars.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Tre'Davious White out vs. Titans with back injury
Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White is officially inactive for Tuesday night's matchup against the Tennessee Titans due to a back injury, the team announced.White had missed just one game since entering the NFL in 2017 prior to Tuesday's contest. The defensive back failed to practice this week. His absence leaves the Bills' secondary without its two top cornerbacks, as Buffalo placed Levi Wallace on injured reserve earlier in the week. The Bills will now have to rely on veteran Josh Norman in their defensive backfield. Norman played 91% of the team's defensive snaps during his season debut in Week 4.Running back Zack Moss and receiver John Brown are also inactive for Tuesday's game. Moss will now miss his third consecutive contest due to a toe injury, while Brown is dealing with a calf ailment.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The Texans made the first move of the season a week ago, firing Bill O'Brien after their disappointing 0-4 start. The Falcons did the same with Dan Quinn on Sunday after suffering two historic collapses en route to an 0-5 record. It's the first time multiple teams have replaced their head coaches after the first five weeks since 2008, when the Raiders (1-3) and Rams (0-4) parted ways with Lane Kiffin and Scott Linehan, respectively. Those clubs went a combined 6-18 down the stretch, and neither had a winning record against the spread under a new coach. The Texans (1-4 ATS) and Falcons (1-4 ATS) have been two of the league's worst bets through five games, though both are led by Pro Bowl quarterbacks and defensively minded interim coaches. Should bettors count on improved results from either club?New coach, similar resultsSince 1989, 45 teams have replaced their head coach before the end of the season. None of them made the playoffs, and only one finished the year with a winning record. As one might expect, a majority of those teams did improve their straight-up record under a new boss. But it wasn't enough to reward bettors, as those 45 teams went a combined 135-151-6 ATS (47.2%) after making coaching changes. Only 17 of them had winning records ATS after the move, and only one of those 17 made the switch before Week 7.In fact, none of the teams that made early coaching moves were particularly kind to bettors. Here are the 10 teams since 1989 that replaced their head coaches before Week 7, along with their ATS records before and after the move:SEASONTEAMATS BEFOREATS AFTER1989Raiders1-36-61991Colts0-54-6-11998Chargers2-3-13-5-22000Bengals0-2-17-62005Rams1-44-72008Raiders2-25-72008Rams0-46-62014Raiders2-26-62015Dolphins1-34-82019Washington1-45-6Though seven of the 10 teams improved their ATS records under a new head coach, only one was above .500 ATS after the move. Those 10 teams also went a combined 50-63-2 ATS (44.2%) - bad enough to turn a profit by blindly betting against them. Those holding out hope on preseason win total bets for Houston (7.5) and Atlanta (7.5) may want to consider ripping up those tickets. Only one of the 10 teams to replace their coach before Week 7 finished with more than six wins on the season. The five teams to replace their coach after a winless start went a combined 13-67. The best among them finished 4-12.The most profitable way to play teams with new coaches has been in the totals market. The 10 teams that made early moves went a combined 66-48-2 (57.9%) to the under, and eight of them were profitable to the under after installing a new coach. That could be the product of more conservative game plans or improved discipline; a new head coach will often simplify things for a foundering squad.Fade teams with new HCsSo how should bettors play the Texans and Falcons for the rest of this season? For one, don't dream too big. Betting them to win the AFC South (+950) and NFC South (+6500), respectively, is likely a fool's errand, as is sweating out either team's preseason win total.Playing any trend without context is risky, though blindly betting against teams with new coaches has been profitable for three decades, especially when a move comes early in the year. We can also expect teams that make in-season coaching changes to play some low-scoring games, as we saw last week when Houston posted its first under in three weeks. The primary takeaway: The market tends to exaggerate the significance of a new coach. Most teams improve after making a switch, but not enough to reward bettors banking on a major turnaround. When it comes to the Texans and Falcons, don't bet on new leadership solving old problems.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Goodell: Review of Titans' outbreak is about safety, not discipline
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the league's review of the Tennessee Titans' COVID-19 outbreak is concerned with health and safety, not punishment."This is not about discipline. This is about making sure we’re keeping our personnel safe, and that’s been our entire focus to date," Goodell said Tuesday, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The NFL is looking into possible violations of the league's protocols after multiple Titans players reportedly gathered for unauthorized workouts following an outbreak at the team's facility. The Titans had two games rescheduled as a result of the outbreak. Over 20 people in the organization have tested positive for the virus.Tennessee's Week 4 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers was moved to Week 7, while the team's Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills was moved from Sunday to Tuesday.Dr. Allen Sills, the league's chief medical officer, said the Titans have been "cooperative" and "forthcoming" with the investigation, per MMQB's Albert Breer.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Saints consider moving games to LSU so fans can attend
The New Orleans Saints are looking into the possibility of playing home games at LSU's stadium so fans can attend while the COVID-19 pandemic continues."Our game operations staff is meeting with LSU officials today to discuss potentially hosting future Saints home games at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge," a Saints spokesperson said in a statement obtained by Fletcher Mackel of WDSU."LSU has been gracious and enthusiastic regarding hosting our future games and we very much appreciate their partnership. We have also discussed the possibility of moving our home games to LSU with the NFL and they are aware of our exploring this option. Obviously, our overwhelming preference is to play our games in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with partial fan attendance but there has been no indication from the city on when, or if, this might be approved."New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell previously rejected the Saints' proposal to reintroduce fans in a limited capacity and declined to offer a timetable for when the team would be able to reopen its doors. The Tigers have been capping attendance at roughly 26,000, or 25%, due to the pandemic. The Saints' next home game is scheduled for Oct. 25 versus the Carolina Panthers.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Saints' Thomas was suspended after confrontation with coaches
Michael Thomas' recent suspension was the result of a confrontation with the New Orleans Saints' coaching staff, according to The Athletic's Jeff Duncan. The receiver, who missed Monday's game, reportedly talked back to coaches, including head coach Sean Payton, after getting into a fight with teammate C.J. Gardner-Johnson during Saturday's practice. The 27-year-old also yelled at team trainers for not taping his ankle properly, and he accused one staff member of illegally going through his mail, Duncan adds.Thomas was officially ruled out on Sunday due to team discipline. He was originally listed as questionable for Monday Night Football. The wideout had missed the club's three previous games before Monday's contest due to an ankle injury.Payton didn't provide a clear answer following the Saints' victory Monday when asked if Thomas' suspension would only last one game."I will keep you posted. That is something that we will discuss and we will let you know when the time is right," Payton said.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NFL Week 6 survivor picks: Trust FitzMagic to bully beleaguered Jets
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. With so many big favorites on the board, Week 5 was always going to be a minefield. Those who picked the Saints, Cowboys, and Seahawks survived legitimate scares, while 49ers and Chiefs backers weren't so lucky.Things are even trickier in Week 6, with shorter spreads and balanced matchups dominating the schedule. This could be the week the other shoe drops.Week 6 confidence rankingConfidence rankings (CR) are out of 10 based on the author's picks:AWAYHOME (SPREAD)PICK (CR)NY JetsMiami (N/A)MIA (8)BaltimorePhiladelphia (+8)BAL (6)ClevelandPittsburgh (-4)PIT (6)DenverNew England (N/A)NE (5)CincinnatiIndianapolis (-8)IND (5)Kansas CityBuffalo (N/A)KC (5)DetroitJacksonville (+3.5)DET (4)AtlantaMinnesota (-3.5)MIN (3)HoustonTennessee (N/A)TEN (3)WashingtonNY Giants (-3)WAS (2)Green BayTampa Bay (+2)GB (2)ArizonaDallas (+3)DAL (2)LA RamsSan Francisco (+3)SF (1)ChicagoCarolina (-2.5)CHI (1)(Odds source: theScore Bet)Author's pick: Miami DolphinsPicking against Ryan Fitzpatrick in survivor pools is simply something you shouldn't do. Over the last three seasons (including the 2020 campaign), he's led his teams to five outright wins as underdogs of at least a touchdown. His volatility is gut-wrenching. But what about picking with Fitzpatrick? The Dolphins host the Jets this week and will be at least seven-point favorites, with the opening line at -8 in the limited spots it's available. Fitzpatrick hasn't been in this spot very often, but when he has, he's delivered: He's 5-1 straight up as a starter with his team favored by at least a touchdown. Fitzpatrick is also 24-9 straight up as an NFL starter when favored in any capacity dating back to 2012.With Sam Darnold recovering from a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder, there are questions around who starts at quarterback for the Jets. Darnold's status is very much up in the air, and we've already seen what a trainwreck this offense is with Joe Flacco at the helm. New York is 0-7 in games Darnold has missed since the team drafted the USC quarterback in 2018, and the Jets have no real reason to rush their young quarterback back from injury. If Darnold does start, there's still not much cause for concern here. With Byron Jones returning to the lineup in Week 5 alongside Xavien Howard, the Dolphins showed just how dominant their revamped defense can be; Miami limited the 49ers to just 4.4 yards per play and forced three turnovers. The Jets have little hope against that secondary given their injuries on offense - Chris Hogan became the latest to join a long list of injured players Sunday.Consider also the massive coaching discrepancy between the two teams - Brian Flores has done a marvelous job in Miami while Adam Gase's seat is so hot he has to stand - and the fact the Jets are losing players by the day while the Dolphins continue to get healthy. Fading the league's worst team is a no-brainer here.Avoid: New England PatriotsReports Tuesday indicated the Patriots should have both Cam Newton and Stephon Gilmore back from the reserve/COVID-19 list for this contest. But if there's anything we've learned from the last two weeks, it's that we shouldn't be sure about anything when it comes to the coronavirus - especially after Ryan Tannehill's concerning comments. An extra week between games has helped Drew Lock in his recovery from a shoulder injury, and the Broncos quarterback is expected to return Sunday. Lock was 4-1 as a starter last season, a record that included a win as an eight-point 'dog on the road against the Texans.Give Bill Belichick an extra week to prepare while putting two of his best players back on the field, and one would expect a straightforward Patriots win. But these are unprecedented circumstances. Without truly knowing Newton's status - or the condition he'll be in if he does play - there's no way to feel fully comfortable pinning your survival hopes on New England this week.Alex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. Clemson's Swinney teases Lawrence to Jets, Giants in press conference
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney made a light-hearted prediction about Trevor Lawrence's future NFL destination during his Tuesday press conference. When Swinney was asked about Lawrence's celebratory spike after a score against Miami, he said the quarterback apologized and expressed that the move had no place at Clemson - but Lawrence would be free to do as he pleases in New York."When he gets to New York or wherever y’all think he’s going, he can spike the ball and go do whatever he wants to do. But not here," Swinney said, according to The Athletic's Grace Raynor. The New York Jets and New York Giants are both in prime positions to pick first overall in next year's draft. Both teams have failed to win a game this season and sit at the bottom of the NFL standings, along with the 0-5 Atlanta Falcons. The Clemson sideline boss went on to praise the 21-year-old, noting he is the perfect package for NFL teams scouting his services."There’s nothing that you could desire in a quarterback that’s not there," Swinney said, per Raynor. The Heisman candidate is off to another terrific start this season, throwing 10 touchdowns and no interceptions. He is expected to be one of the top picks in next year's draft.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Jets trying to trade Le'Veon Bell
The New York Jets are shopping Le'Veon Bell with hopes of trading the former All-Pro running back sooner rather than later, sources told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.Bell has seemingly grown frustrated with the Jets recently, and "liked" tweets criticizing his usage following a loss to the Arizona Cardinals Sunday. He clashed with head coach Adam Gase in training camp, posting on social media that he was fit to practice through a hamstring injury when the team held him out.The 28-year-old was looking to bounce back from a down year in 2019 coming into this season, but the rebound hasn't come to fruition. He missed three of the Jets' first five games after he reinjured his hamstring and has averaged 3.9 yards per carry on 19 rush attempts. The 2019 season marked his first with the Jets after he signed a four-year, $52.5-million deal in free agency, and Bell averaged a career-low of only 3.2 yards per carry. He infamously sat out the 2018 season after he refused to sign the franchise tag with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the second year in a row.Once regarded as one of the top all-purpose running backs in the NFL, Bell only has three catches for 39 yards in two appearances this season. He had 461 yards and a touchdown in the passing game last year but was accustomed to putting up greater numbers with the Steelers.Bell was named a first-team All-Pro twice over his first five seasons with the Steelers. He has no guaranteed money left on his contract beyond the 2020 campaign.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Cowboys' Jones rules out trade: 'We've got our quarterback in Andy Dalton'
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has it made clear he has full confidence in Andy Dalton's ability to lead the team and is shutting down any discussion of acquiring another quarterback in the wake of Dak Prescott's long-term absence."We've got our quarterback in Andy Dalton," Jones said when asked if the team had any plans to make a trade, per The Athletic's Jon Machota. The Cowboys did make one minor addition to the quarterback room, signing Garrett Gilbert from the Browns' practice squad. Gilbert and rookie signal-caller Ben DiNucci are expected to back up Dalton moving forward.Dalton played well during Sunday's victory over the New York Giants, completing 9-of-11 passes for 111 yards after Prescott went down with a serious ankle injury.Dallas signed Dalton this past offseason to a one-year deal worth up to $7 million with incentives, which include $1 million for playing 50-percent of the team's snaps this season plus a playoff birth, per Spotrac. The veteran - who spent nine years spearheading the Cincinnati Bengals - owns a career record of 70-61-2 with 204 touchdown passes.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc.
