Mahomes makes Time's list of most influential people of 2020
The accolades keep rolling in for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Super Bowl LIV MVP was named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people of 2020 on Tuesday.Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first Lombardi Trophy in 50 years in February. He then signed the richest contract in sports history in July when he inked a 10-year, $503-million extension with Kansas City. The 25-year-old's Time profile was written by MLB legend and Miami Marlins part-owner Derek Jeter."There is a lot of promise in Patrick Mahomes' future than just on-field accolades. He already has started to build a legacy as one of the most impactful athletes of his generation, and I, for one, am excited to see what is next," Jeter said.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: NFL fines Payton, Gruden $100K for not wearing masks
The NFL has fined New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton and Las Vegas Raiders bench boss Jon Gruden $100,000 each for failing to properly wear face coverings on the sidelines during Monday Night Football, a source told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Both teams have also been fined $250,000 each, Pelissero adds. The NFL has now handed out $1.75 million worth of fines for mask-related infractions committed during Week 2, Pelissero notes. The Denver Broncos' Vic Fangio, Seattle Seahawks' Pete Carroll, and San Francisco 49ers' Kyle Shanahan were also reportedly fined $100,000 each for the improper use of masks, while the coaches' respective teams were each docked $250,000.The league reminded teams and coaches last week to follow its guidelines on wearing face coverings on the sidelines. Anyone with access to the sideline area must wear a face covering that fits "across the wearer's nose and mouth to prevent the transmission of the (coronavirus)," according to the NFL's new protocol.Gruden apologized after Monday's game for not wearing a mask. He also revealed that he had the virus in mid-July.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Packers' Adams has minor hamstring injury, Week 3 status unclear
The hamstring injury Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams' suffered in Week 2 is considered a minor strain, but his status for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints has yet to be determined, a source told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.Adams was sidelined in the fourth quarter against the Detroit Lions last Sunday after initially being listed as questionable. Head coach Matt LaFleur said that Adams wanted to return to the game, but the Packers opted against it with the team leading by a comfortable margin. The three-time Pro Bowler was held to three catches for 36 yards in Week 2.The Packers' leading receiver in each of the last four seasons, Adams had a career-high 14 receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns in the season opener. The 27-year-old has played at least 12 games every season since entering the NFL as a second-round pick in 2014, but his last full 16-game campaign came in 2016.Adams racked up 83 receptions for 997 yards and five touchdowns through 12 appearances in 2019.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: 49ers' Ford expected to miss Week 3, return timetable unclear
Injuries continue to pile up for the San Francisco 49ers.Defensive end Dee Ford is expected to miss Sunday's game against the New York Giants, sources told Tom Pelissero and Mike Garofalo of NFL Network, and there's no clear timetable for his return.Ford didn't play against the New York Jets in Week 2. He was suffering from neck spasms but now has "more of a back injury," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday, according to The Athletic's David Lombardi. The one-time Pro Bowler played 31% of San Francisco's defensive snaps during the season opener.Ford is entering his second season with the 49ers after spending his first five NFL campaigns with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 29-year-old racked up 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles through 11 games in 2019.His absence is the latest blow to the 49ers' defensive front, which lost defensive ends Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas to season-ending injuries this week.San Francisco will also be missing running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman in Week 3, and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could potentially be unavailable after he suffered a high ankle sprain Sunday.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Newton on 10th NFL season: 'It's not about money, it's about respect'
Cam Newton is off to a hot start as the New England Patriots quarterback, and the fact he's playing under a modest deal signed late in the offseason doesn't bother him."Surprisingly but true, and factual enough, if I do what I'm supposed to do, as I'm expected to, that will not be a topic of discussion moving forward," Newton said on "The Greg Hill Show," according to Mike Reiss of ESPN."Money at this particular point in my career is not important. Let's be honest: I've made money, but for everything that I play this game for, I haven't received yet. And that's why I'm playing. So it's not about money, it's about respect."Newton inked a one-year, incentive-laden contract worth up to $7.5 million last July. His contract includes a $1.05-million base salary with just $550,000 guaranteed. The 31-year-old leads all quarterbacks in carries (26) and touchdowns (four) on the ground this season while completing a career-high 71.4% of his pass attempts. New England has posted a 1-1 record."A wise man once said - and that wise man is my father - all blessings don't come in financial means," Newton said. "So for me, if I do what I'm supposed to do, everything else will take care of itself."Newton is looking to improve in areas that go beyond being just a quarterback."I have to have endurance like a wide receiver, I have to have the physical toughness of a running back, and just the intuitiveness and being cerebral like a quarterback," he said. "I wouldn't call myself a quarterback, I'd call myself a football player."The signal-caller added he admires "the culture of the Patriots" as it's been "therapeutic" to him and has challenged his growth.Newton, the 2011 first overall pick, was released in March by the Panthers with one season left on a five-year, $103.8-million extension he inked in 2015. He was named league MVP and led Carolina to the Super Bowl later that season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Week 3 survivor picks: Beware beleaguered Eagles vs. Burrow, Bengals
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. We survived Week 2 thanks to the Titans, but it wasn't exactly comfortable. Gardner Minshew's upset potential has reached Ryan Fitzpatrick levels, and that's enough to scare me away for the foreseeable future.Nonetheless, we are on to Week 3 - as are most with 14 of 16 favorites winning over the weekend - and there are some great spots we can exploit to help us reach October in our survivor pools.Week 3 confidence rankingConfidence rankings (CR) are out of 10 based on the author's picks:AWAYHOME (SPREAD)PICK (CR)NY JetsIndianapolis (-10)IND (9)CarolinaLA Chargers (-7)LAC (8)DetroitArizona (-6)ARI (7)Las VegasNew England (-6)NE (6)HoustonPittsburgh (-4)PIT (6)Tampa BayDenver (+6.5)TB (4)TennesseeMinnesota (+3)TEN (4)CincinnatiPhiladelphia (-6)PHI (3)WashingtonCleveland (-7)CLE (3)Kansas CityBaltimore (-3.5)BAL (3)MiamiJacksonville (-3)MIA (2)San FranciscoNY Giants (+4)NYG (2)ChicagoAtlanta (-3.5)ATL (1)LA RamsBuffalo (-3)LAR (1)DallasSeattle (-5)DAL (1)Green BayNew Orleans (-3)GB (1)(Odds source: theScore Bet)Author's pick: Indianapolis ColtsAre the Jets going to win a single game this year?Against any other team this week, the Colts might have been on upset watch after losing Parris Campbell and Malik Hooker to injury. But against the Jets, there's little reason for concern. The loss of Campbell feels insignificant when the opponent is trotting out Braxton Berrios, Josh Malone, and Frank Gore as starters at the skill positions. With Jamison Crowder, Breshad Perriman, and Chris Hogan nursing injuries, Sam Darnold must be looking at his receiver group wondering who he can actually target. It's hard to envision a scenario in which this New York offense finds any sort of success moving the ball outside of garbage time. The Jets rank 30th in the NFL in both yards and points per play, and they now face a Colts defense that ranks first in the league in allowing just 4.4 yards per play and 14.5 first downs per game (the second-fewest is 18.5).As if that's not enough, Indianapolis boasts the league's best offensive line and a rookie running back in Jonathan Taylor who already looks like a star. The Colts are also on the right side of the week's biggest coaching mismatch, with Frank Reich sure to add to Adam Gase's misery.Avoid: Philadelphia EaglesOne of my biggest takeaways through two weeks is that the Eagles are simply not a good football team. Carson Wentz, who's consistently let off the hook by injuries to the offense, might be one of the most overrated quarterbacks in football. He has great physical tools, but his arm and mind are equally erratic. He failed to connect with open receivers on several occasions Sunday, either by missing his throws or simply not seeing them to begin with. The ability is there, but he can never seem to put it all together, and I'm getting very tired of waiting. The Eagles' offense has stumbled to just 4.6 yards per play through the opening two weeks (tied with the Jets for 29th in the NFL) and ranks 29th in points per play - two spots below the Bengals. This could be a get-right spot for Philadelphia, but are we comfortable banking on that given what we've seen so far?Cincinnati, meanwhile, has something special in Joe Burrow. The rookie hasn't been free of mistakes through the first two weeks of his pro career, but that's to be expected, and he's given Bengals fans plenty of reason to be excited. His competitive fire is infectious, as demonstrated by the tenacity of his teammates so far this season. Burrow has made some big-time throws in important moments and shown an ability to keep his team in games. He exudes confidence and has prime upset potential.Alex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. NFL first coach fired odds: Adam Gase, Dan Quinn on thin ice
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. When Matt Patricia is a distant third in the odds to be the NFL's first coach fired, you know it's been a rough start to the season. That's how bad things have gotten for a couple of coaches through the opening two weeks, which is already enough time for historic choke jobs and blowout losses. To nobody's surprise, Adam Gase is the early favorite to get canned after two embarrassing defeats for the Jets, though Dan Quinn isn't far behind following the Falcons' epic collapse Sunday. Don't forget about Patricia, whose Lions have already blown two games in as many weeks. Here are the odds for the first coach fired and the best bets to earn the dubious honor.COACHODDSAdam Gase+150Dan Quinn+200Matt Patricia+600Doug Marrone+700Mike Zimmer+700Anthony Lynn+900Bill O'Brien+900Vic Fangio+1400Kevin Stefanski+2500Matt Nagy+2500Frank Reich+3300Adam Gase, Jets (+150)This was a bad marriage from the start, and it's only getting worse. After a 10-point loss to the Bills that never felt that close, the Jets lost by 18 points to a 49ers team relying on backups at nearly every key position after a rash of injuries. As bad as Gase has been in his head-coaching tenure, he isn't the best bet here for three reasons. It's only his second season in New York; owner Woody Johnson is a fervent defender of Gase and likely wouldn't pull the plug before the season ends; and the price is too short to bet given the other options on the board. It's enticing, but the value is elsewhere.Dan Quinn, Falcons (+200)This still isn't a great price, but it's hard not to take a shot after Sunday's collapse, which is historically bad every way you slice it. Since 2012, teams leading by 20 points after the first quarter were 21-0 in the regular season, and teams scoring at least 39 points with zero turnovers were 444-0 all-time. And yet, as only the Falcons can, they blew it.Quinn's name has been floated in this market for years thanks to his team's inability to escape mediocrity despite one of the NFL's highest payrolls. That last part should be particularly irksome to ownership, which may decide it has seen enough of Quinn if Atlanta falls out of the playoff race.Matt Patricia, Lions (+600)Given how hilariously bad Patricia's team has been at holding the lead this year, it's amazing he's still holding onto a job. In Week 1, the Lions led by 17 points heading into the fourth quarter and lost. Last week, they had an 11-point lead after the first quarter and lost. It's the first time a team has done that in consecutive weeks since Sports Database started tracking NFL data in 1989. Those were Patricia's fifth and sixth double-digit leads blown since the start of last season; no other coach has more than three.Patricia was the favorite in this market for most of the summer, and he's done little to earn more respect through two games. The best way to get a ticket out the door is to tease the upside of your roster before squandering it with bad coaching, and Patricia has done that twice already this year. At this price, he's easily the best value on the board.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Report: Broncos expected to sign Blake Bortles
Following quarterback Drew Lock's injury, the Denver Broncos are expected to sign Blake Bortles, sources told 9 News' Mike Klis. The plan is for Bortles to go through COVID-19 testing and quarantine protocols until Friday before officially joining the club on a one-year, veteran-minimum deal, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The 28-year-old could be active as Denver's No. 2 quarterback for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Klis adds. After five inconsistent campaigns with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who selected him third overall in 2014, Bortles signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Rams last March to be Jared Goff's backup. He played briefly in just three contests, attempting two passes.Jeff Driskel, who replaced Lock following his injury, is expected to start Week 3. Driskel went 18-of-34 passing for 256 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception versus the Pittsburgh Steelers after taking over.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Eli: Jones has 'right mindset' to be successful QB despite early struggles
The 2020 NFL campaign hasn't been kind to Daniel Jones thus far, but he still has a believer in the legendary quarterback he succeeded.Despite Jones' early struggles for the 0-2 New York Giants, Eli Manning said the second-year passer's tough mentality will get him back on track."(Jones) has the right mindset at the start to be successful at that position," Manning told The Athletic's Dan Duggan. "I think he's cool under pressure, he doesn't get rattled. He gets upset and he gets frustrated like us all, but he doesn't show much. I think it's a great demeanor to last in the NFL and in New York."I know he's going to bust his tail to do everything possible to get back on track and to learn and make progress and I think he will. I've got a lot of confidence and faith that Daniel will have a long career and have a lot of success in the NFL."Jones has completed 63% of his passes for 520 yards, two touchdowns, and four turnovers (three interceptions, one fumble) through two contests this season.Manning noted the shortened offseason due to the COVID-19 pandemic has likely played a significant role in the 23-year-old's early-season woes."It's tough for guys in Daniel's position not having that spring, with a brand-new offense," he said. "He's trying to learn all this - not on the fly, they had meetings and whatnot - but some of this stuff, he just hasn't run these plays a ton. But I've thought he's played well in the first two games. He's thrown the ball accurately, he's thrown some tight throws."I think those teams that have new coaches and new coordinators and some young players at spots, it's just going to take a little bit longer for them to jell and come together. They're just at a little bit of a disadvantage over the organizations and teams that have quarterbacks that have been in the system for a number of years and coaches that have been there."The Giants will hope to get back on track in Week 3 when they host the injury-riddled San Francisco 49ers.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Brees after MNF loss: Saints 'not even close' to playing their best
Drew Brees wasn't satisfied with the New Orleans Saints' performance in their 34-24 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football."Are we totally in sync right now? No, we're not. We're not even close to where we are capable of. Not even close," Brees told reporters postgame, including ESPN's Mike Triplett. "We did some good things early on, but it just wasn't enough for the few opportunities that we had."The veteran quarterback went 26-of-38 passing for 312 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in Vegas. He appeared to struggle without his top receiver Michael Thomas, who missed Monday's game with an ankle injury.Brees noticeably didn't challenge the Raiders often downfield and went through accuracy issues, but the 41-year-old laughed off the notion that he's starting to display signs of decline."Well, my job is to execute the offense," he said. "... My job's not to have the most air yards or throw the ball down the field most or anything like that."I think I've always evaluated myself on being a great decision-maker," he continued. "And so, at the end of the day, I'll throw the ball to the open guy, move the ball down the field, score points, help us win football games. So that's my job. My job's to help us win. My job's to help put everyone around me in the best position to succeed."The 1-1 Saints will host the unbeaten Green Bay Packers in Week 3.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Gruden apologizes for not wearing mask: 'I'm doing my best, I've had the virus'
The NFL reportedly fined three head coaches for not wearing a face covering on the sidelines, and Jon Gruden may be the next in line. The Las Vegas Raiders head coach was seen throughout Monday night's game against the New Orleans Saints with his mask down below his nose and mouth. The violation carries a $100,000 fine to coaches and another $250,000 to their team. Gruden addressed the issue postgame and revealed his own personal account with the coronavirus."I'm doing my best, I've had the virus. I'm doing my best. I'm very sensitive about it," Gruden said, according to ESPN's Paul Gutierrez.Gruden confirmed to the Oakland Tribune's Jerry McDonald that he had the virus in mid-July but wasn't planning on going public with the diagnosis.Gruden is the offensive play-caller for the Raiders and said he keeps the mask down in order to do his job."I'm calling plays. I just wanna communicate in these situations and if I get fined I'll have to pay the fine but I'm very sensitive about that and I apologize," he said.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: NFL hands out $1M in fines for coaches not wearing masks
The NFL cracked down on three coaches for not wearing their mask on the sideline during this weekend's games. The league fined the Denver Broncos' Vic Fangio, Seattle Seahawks' Pete Carroll, and San Francisco 49ers' Kyle Shanahan $100,000 each for the improper use of masks and all three teams have also been fined $250,000, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. The league issued a memo to teams and coaches after Week 1, reminding them about the imposed guidelines on wearing a face covering on the sidelines.Under the new protocol, anyone with access to the sideline area must wear a face covering to combat the coronavirus."The face covering must be worn as designed so that it securely fits across the wearer's nose and mouth to prevent the transmission of the virus," read the memo sent from NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent.Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden and New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton were also seen communicating during Monday night's contest without a mask.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. 49ers' Bosa, Thomas out for season with torn ACLs
San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa will miss the remainder of the season after an MRI confirmed he tore his ACL in Week 2, the team announced Monday. An MRI also confirmed fellow defensive lineman Solomon Thomas suffered a season-ending torn ACL, the team announced.Bosa and Thomas were among a handful of Niners who went down with knee or ankle injuries at MetLife Stadium, raising questions about the new turf in New York. The NFL said Monday the field surface satisfied all necessary inspections and policies. The 49ers will forge ahead without their top edge rusher, who won Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2019 after piling up nine sacks. 49ers' Garoppolo has chance to play vs. Giants, Mostert likely out
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Jimmy Garoppolo's ankle injury isn't severe and the quarterback has a chance to play against the New York Giants in Week 3, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Garoppolo suffered a high ankle sprain during the first half of Sunday's matchup versus the New York Jets. The signal-caller completed 14 of 16 pass attempts for 131 yards and two touchdowns before exiting the game.Shanahan added that running back Raheem Mostert is unlikely to play versus the Giants due to an MCL sprain, per Schefter. Mostert, the 49ers' leading rusher last season, was also injured during Sunday's game and didn't return.Additionally, running back Tevin Coleman is expected to miss multiple weeks, including San Francisco's Week 3 contest, due to a knee injury, a source told Schefter.Jerick McKinnon is now set to take an increased workload in the 49ers' backfield after stepping up with 77 yards and one touchdown on three rushing attempts against the Jets.Meanwhile, an MRI confirmed both defensive end Nick Bosa and fellow lineman Solomon Thomas are out for the season with torn ACLs.The 49ers entered Week 2 already without tight end George Kittle and linebacker Dee Ford.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Taylor week-to-week, chest issues stemmed from injection
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor is week-to-week with the chest injury that kept him out of Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.The Chargers are unsure whether Taylor will be ready for their Week 3 matchup versus the Carolina Panthers, Schefter adds.Taylor was set to start in Week 2 but experienced difficulties breathing before kickoff, which forced first-round rookie Justin Herbert to make his NFL debut. The chest issues stemmed from a pregame injection Taylor received for a rib injury, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.Despite Herbert's strong performance, head coach Anthony Lynn said postgame that if Taylor is "100% ready to go, he's our starter."Herbert completed 22 of 33 pass attempts for 311 yards and one touchdown against one interception during Los Angeles' 23-20 overtime loss. The sixth overall pick also rushed for 18 yards and one score.Taylor started for the Chargers in their season-opening victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing for 208 yards on 16 completions. The Chargers signed the veteran signal-caller prior to the 2019 season to serve as Philip Rivers' backup.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. 5 betting takeaways from NFL Week 2
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. How's that for an encore? After a wild Week 1 with three major upsets, this week brought us a historic comeback, a thrilling Sunday night finale, and a wave of injuries that could change the betting landscape. Here are five NFL betting takeaways from Week 2.Injuries steal spotlightWe saw several exciting finishes in the second week, but the headline was the sheer amount of star players who didn't finish their team's games.Saquon Barkley and Courtland Sutton are likely out for the year. Christian McCaffrey, Davante Adams, Drew Lock, Tyrod Taylor, and others could miss significant time. But the hardest-hit group on Sunday was the 49ers, who saw star linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas carted off early in the first quarter and pulled Jimmy Garoppolo, Raheem Mostert, and Tevin Coleman before the end of the game. Those five join an already star-studded injured list for the defending NFC champions, who are still +800 to win the Super Bowl but currently look like a risky bet. The other teams hurt the most have little chance at the title, but weekly bettors might want to steer clear of the Broncos and Giants until we see how they fare without key pieces.Seahawks, Patriots shine in prime timeSome bettors may not have been thrilled with the Seahawks (-4.5) narrowly securing a 5-point victory, but those holding futures tickets on either side had to be impressed with what they saw on Sunday night.Russell Wilson diced up New England's esteemed secondary for 288 yards and five touchdowns, seizing the lead in the MVP race and validating Seattle's decision to "let Russ cook" in 2020. Wilson was getting the keys to this offense eventually, and we now see the results - he has nine passing touchdowns to just 11 incompletions on the season, and the Seahawks own the second-most points per drive (3.8) and most points per play (0.62).Don't overlook how potent the Patriots looked, too. Cam Newton threw for 397 yards - third-most in his career - and added 47 yards with two scores on the ground in a near-comeback effort. The defense's play was concerning, but if Newton fires like that all year, New England's 16-1 title price isn't as crazy as it sounds.Cowboys stage historic comebackIf you bet on the Falcons (+3) this week, you might want to read past this one.Atlanta collapsed down the stretch on Sunday after a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and a 16-point lead with just under five minutes left, allowing two touchdowns and an onside kick en route to the Cowboys' miraculous 1-point victory. Here's how epic the collapse was: Since 2012, teams with 20-point leads after the first quarter were 21-0 straight up and against the spread, and teams to score at least 39 points with zero turnovers were 440-0 all-time ... until Sunday, of course. So what does this say about the Cowboys? They were impressive through the air to spark the comeback, which tracks with their wildly efficient first-down passing performance in Week 1 against the Rams. Still, falling behind early isn't a sustainable way to win, even if Dallas' upside matches our expectations entering the year. Are Cardinals, Rams for real? While the Seahawks and 49ers have stolen most of the headlines - good and bad - in the NFC West, the remaining teams in the division are catching bettors' eyes with undefeated starts.Speaking of the Rams' Week 1 win over the Cowboys, Los Angeles is now a surprising 2-0 after beating the Eagles (-1.5) by 18 points in Week 2. Jared Goff showed flashes of his 2018 self behind an efficient run game and creative passing attack, while the defense made Carson Wentz's life difficult all day. It's still too early to pencil this team back into the playoffs, but Sean McVay may have rediscovered his magic in L.A.And how about those Cardinals? Kyler Murray had no problem with Washington's star-studded front seven, rushing for two touchdowns and tossing another in an easy win as 7-point chalk. Arizona's defense has held up for a second straight game, assuaging concerns about that unit's ability to keep up with Murray and co. With an easy part of the schedule upcoming, now may be the best time to buy.Favorites take care of businessAfter a tumultuous start for chalk bettors to in Week 1, this week was historically successful for favorites - and sportsbooks paid the price. No, favorites weren't a collective winner against the number - their record was just 7-8 ATS on the week. But they rarely lost outright. With Monday's result still pending, favorites went 14-1 straight up this week - tied for the most wins in any week in NFL history - and only the Eagles lost outright. Philadelphia was also the only favorite that wouldn't have cashed on a 6-point tease, surely causing headaches for books on Sunday. This week, seven of the early favorites are giving at least six points - just one fewer than the second week. That doesn't mean blindly teasing favorites in Week 3, but it could be worth watching to see if favorites can keep winning at a historic pace.(Odds source: theScore Bet)C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Minnesota Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr will miss the remainder of the season with a torn pectoral muscle, head coach Mike Zimmer told reporters Monday.Barr suffered the injury in Week 2 when the Vikings lost to the Indianapolis Colts, which marked their second straight defeat to begin the campaign."Anthony was our first draft pick that we had when we came here and integral part of our defense," said Zimmer, who selected the UCLA product ninth overall in 2014. " … It's tearing him up inside that he won't be able to play."Barr contributed six tackles across two appearances in 2020. The Vikings' typically strong defense has allowed 71 points over two games this season, more than every team except the Atlanta Falcons. The 28-year-old inked a five-year, $67.5-million contract with the Vikings in March 2019. He nearly signed with the New York Jets that offseason, but Barr withdrew from a verbal agreement to re-sign with Minnesota.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Seahawks fear Irvin has torn ACL
The Seattle Seahawks reportedly fear outside linebacker Bruce Irvin has torn his ACL, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Irvin will undergo more tests to confirm the injury. The defensive lineman went down during Sunday night's game against the New England Patriots.Head coach Pete Carroll was optimistic about Irvin's outlook following the contest, calling it a "knee sprain" and noting that the linebacker was walking around the locker room, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson. The Seahawks' defense has been a major concern so far this season. The team has just three sacks, with two coming from safety Jamal Adams alone. Irvin is listed as the team's strong-side linebacker but also helps the pass rush. The Seahawks selected Irvin - who is in the midst of his second stint with the team - during the first round in 2012. The 32-year-old recorded a career-high 8.5 sacks last season with the Carolina Panthers.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Broncos' Sutton out for season, Lock facing 3-5 week absence
Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton will miss the rest of the season, head coach Vic Fangio confirmed Monday, according to Troy Renck of Denver7 News. The 2019 Pro Bowler suffered an ACL tear, sources told Ian Rapoport and James Palmer of NFL Network.Meanwhile, Fangio said quarterback Drew Lock will miss "three-to-five weeks" with a shoulder bruise.Fangio didn't reveal specifics about Lock's injury, but the sophomore quarterback has a rotator cuff strain, sources told Tom Pelissero and Rapoport. Denver reportedly believes he'll be able to return before the team's Week 8 bye.The Broncos already lost star pass-rusher Von Miller to a likely season-ending ankle injury.Sutton produced the first 1,000-plus-yard season of his career as a sophomore in 2019. With Sutton now done for the year, first-round rookie wideout Jerry Jeudy will likely be asked to step up.The Broncos entered the season as a trendy wild-card pick, but their playoff hopes are dwindling following an 0-2 start and the onslaught of injuries to key players.Denver will look to rebound in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. McCaffrey out 4-6 weeks due to high ankle sprain
Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is sidelined for the next four-to-six weeks after an MRI revealed a high ankle sprain from Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.McCaffrey has confirmed the initial return timetable but wants to make a comeback ahead of schedule."They say four to six weeks. Well, that's a challenge to me," McCaffrey said Monday, according to Joe Person of The Athletic. "I'm gonna attack it like I attack anything else."McCaffrey was forced out of Sunday's game midway through the fourth quarter after having his right ankle taped following his second touchdown of the contest. The All-Pro back has yet to miss a game since entering the NFL as the eighth overall pick in 2017.The Stanford product enjoyed his best pro campaign in 2019, leading the league in scrimmage yards (2,392) and touchdowns (tied with 19). He became just the third player in NFL history to amass at least 1,000 yards rushing and receiving.Carolina made McCaffrey the highest-paid running back ever this offseason, signing him to a four-year, $64-million extension. The 24-year-old rushed for 156 yards and a league-high four touchdowns in the first two weeks of the 2020 season. The San Francisco 49ers are finalizing a deal with free-agent defensive end Ezekiel Ansah, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The Niners have lost edge rusher Nick Bosa to a torn ACL in Week 2, while defensive tackle Solomon Thomas could also miss time after suffering a knee injury in the same game.Ansah is coming off an uneventful one-year stint with the Seattle Seahawks, tallying just 2.5 sacks over 11 games. Eagles' Pederson pins Wentz's struggles on short offseason
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson believes the abbreviated NFL offseason is factoring into Carson Wentz's early-season struggles."Two and a half weeks to prepare for your first real game, it's not enough time," Pederson told reporters Monday. "The passing game, it takes time. We're going to continue to work and get better."Wentz looked out of sorts in Week 2 for the second straight game, missing several routine passes and throwing a pair of interceptions in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams.Along with the rest of the NFL, the Eagles had no preseason contests or on-field work before training camp because of the coronavirus pandemic."I guess you can point to a lot of different things," Pederson said. "Missing OTAs, not having all the necessary maybe reps during training camp, missing preseason games, whatever it might be, the timing of things that we do in the passing game and just missing these throws."They are throws that he typically would throw, and it's a little bit, too, on the receivers. Sometimes the receivers need to make the catch as well. So it's things that we have to continue to work."Wentz is already up to four interceptions for the season - twice as many as his touchdown passes. The quarterback has also fumbled twice and owns an ugly 64.4 passer rating for the 0-2 Eagles.Pederson appeared perplexed when asked why Wentz is apparently regressing in his fifth season."It's a good question," he said. "For us, it's a matter of continuing to work. I think as coaches and players, we continue to strive to get better every single day. I just don't want Carson to feel like he has to make all the plays every single time. I want him to just be Carson and you guys know him, you've been around him, you've heard him, his demeanor. He wants to do everything right and we've given him control to do that, but we just have to continue to work to get better."I don't think anybody can totally master the sport. You're constantly learning and getting better, and that's what we've got to do and continue to coach that."Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Buccaneers' Godwin out of concussion protocol, will play vs. Broncos
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin has cleared the concussion protocol and will play in Week 3, head coach Bruce Arians said Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Godwin missed Sunday's matchup with the Carolina Panthers after developing concussion-related symptoms following the team's Week 1 loss. The Buccaneers receiver didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday and returned in a limited capacity Friday, but he was later ruled out.Tampa Bay's receiving corps has been dealing with injury issues. Mike Evans entered the season with a hamstring injury but caught seven passes for 104 yards and a touchdown in Week 2.Godwin caught six passes for 79 receiving yards in the Bucs' Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The talented receiver set career highs in 2019, recording 86 receptions for 1,333 yards.Quarterback Tom Brady will now have both his top receiving options for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. 10 key takeaways from Week 2
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines the significance of those events moving forward. How will the Niners weather this? The 49ers managed to win even though they lost Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas, and Raheem Mostert to injuries in their Week 2 game against the Jets. They were already without Dee Ford, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, and Richard Sherman going into the matchup. But what are they going to do next? The short answer: Who knows? Head coach Kyle Shanahan is renowned for being a master schemer. Still, even the best coaches need good players, and Shanahan’s down seven starters, including guys at key positions like quarterback, edge rusher, wide receiver, and cornerback. The schedule is somewhat forgiving in the short term, with upcoming games against the winless Giants, Eagles, and Dolphins up next. But then the Niners face the Rams, Patriots, Seahawks, Packers, and Saints in succession before they finally get a bye. Sunday’s win was impressive, but San Francisco, unfortunately, can’t count on seeing the Jets’ rotten carcass every week.Diggs making all the difference Stacy Revere / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe early returns this year suggest Josh Allen has benefited from the infrastructure the Bills have built around him, especially the playcalling of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. The addition of wideout Stefon Diggs, who was acquired via a trade with the Vikings, is already paying huge dividends, too. Allen had one of his best games as a pro in the Bills’ 31-28 win at the Dolphins, with Diggs catching eight passes for 153 yards and a touchdown. Through two games, Diggs has 16 catches for 239 yards and a TD. He’s provided a whole new dimension. The Bills have a solid roster, and they’re well-coached. Allen was always the potential weak link. Diggs may well prove to be the crucial factor in unlocking his potential. One more fun fact that’s likely not-so-fun if you’re a Minnesota fan:
Report: Colts' Campbell out indefinitely, Hooker done for season
Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Parris Campbell is out indefinitely after suffering a PCL injury in Sunday's win against the Minnesota Vikings, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Meanwhile, safety Malik Hooker will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn Achilles, according to Schefter. The Colts reportedly feared the former first-round defensive back tore his Achilles tendon, and an MRI confirmed it.There was initial optimism regarding Campbell after reports that he avoided an ACL injury, but it appears the wideout - who dealt with injuries throughout his rookie campaign - will still miss significant time. The sophomore was one of Indy's lone bright spots in the Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He racked up a team-high 71 yards on six catches.Hooker's latest major injury could spell the end of his time in Indy. The AFC South club opted not to pick up the safety's fifth-year option, making him a free agent in 2021.Drafted 15th overall in 2017, Hooker starred as a rookie until his debut campaign was cut short by an ACL injury. The safety was able to play in 27 regular-season games in the following two seasons, but injuries still plagued him. Hooker missed time with hip, foot, and further knee issues.Hooker will be replaced in the starting lineup by rookie third-round safety Julian Blackmon, who recently returned to full health after tearing his ACL in college. Campbell's injury will mean more playing time for Zach Pascal and rookie Michael Pittman Jr.The Colts have been hit hard by injuries to start the season. Giants confirm Barkley tore ACL
An MRI on New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley confirmed he tore his ACL against the Chicago Bears in Week 2, the team announced Monday.Barkley will undergo surgery to repair his knee. The procedure typically comes with 10-12 months of recovery, meaning he should be sidelined for the remainder of the year. The 23-year-old was off to a slow start in 2020, compiling only 34 yards on 19 carries. He eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first two campaigns. The Giants reportedly scheduled a visit with free-agent running back Devonta Freeman following Barkley's diagnosis. Cam takes blame for failed SNF final play: 'Just thinking too much'
Cam Newton looked like his old MVP self for most of the New England Patriots' Sunday night shootout with the Seattle Seahawks, but the quarterback came up short during the game's biggest play. After running for his second 1-yard touchdown of the contest to bring New England within one score with 2:16 remaining, Newton again advanced his new team to the goal line, this time with three seconds left. But Seattle was ready for Newton's run. The defense swarmed to stuff the quarterback and seal the 35-30 victory."I just didn’t make everybody right and that's the only thing I regret," Newton said after the game, according to USA Today's Mark Daniels. "In that type of situation, it's humbling to be able to have the respect of a team to have the ball in my hands. I just have to deliver. I saw a clip of it; I could've made it right by just bouncing it (outside). I was just trying to be patient. Just thinking too much, man. Or even just diving over the top. There's so many things that flashed over me.“Playing a fast defense like that, as soon as you guess, you’re wrong. I’ll definitely learn from this. The play was there. The play was there all game.”
Watt after Texans' 0-2 start: 'I'm sick of losing'
The Houston Texans aren't having the best start to their 2020 campaign, and a certain former Defensive Player of the Year isn't pleased. The Texans are 0-2 after allowing 30-plus points during losses to the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs. It's the team's first 0-2 start since the 2018 season, and J.J. Watt shared his frustration following Sunday's defeat."These two weeks, we haven't done enough to win the games, and at some point, you gotta start winning 'em. At some point, you gotta win these tough games against tough teams. I'm sick of losing, that's for sure," Watt told reporters postgame.Watt was particularly displeased with the ejection of Texans defensive tackle Ross Blacklock. The rookie was tossed late in Sunday's game after being penalized for unnecessary roughness."It was a stupid play. It was selfish. I've spoken to Ross before. It pisses me off. It's a very selfish move, late in the game," Watt said. "It's dumb, very dumb to hurt your team in that type of setting for no reason."Watt is off to a strong start. The pass-rusher recorded two sacks in the Week 2 loss, giving him 98 during his career. The Texans will look to rebound against the Pittsburgh Steelers this Sunday.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Lions' Golladay expected to make season debut in Week 3
Detriot Lions wide receiver Kenny Golladay is expected to play against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 after missing the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Golladay was close to playing in Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers, but the Lions were reportedly cautious with their top offensive weapon. With Detroit falling to 0-2 following the defeat in Green Bay, the team needs Golladay - who led the NFL with 11 receiving touchdowns last season - to help spark the offense.Injuries have hit the Lions hard to begin the season. In addition to Golladay, four other starters - guard Joe Dahl, defensive tackle Nick Williams, and cornerbacks Desmond Trufant and Justin Coleman - were sidelined for the loss to Green Bay.A 2017 third-round pick, Golladay produced the second straight 1,000-plus-yard season of his career in 2019.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Armstead, 49ers blame injuries on MetLife turf

Saints-Raiders betting trends and player props
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. What better way to open a brand-new stadium than with an upset win? That's what the Las Vegas Raiders will try to pull off Monday night against the New Orleans Saints (-5.5, 49.5) in their first game at Allegiant Stadium. Here are our favorite trends, props, and bets for Monday night.Betting trendsIn many ways, this is an excellent spot for the Saints. Since 2016, they're 11-3 against the spread as road favorites, and they've covered 17 of their last 21 road games sandwiched between two home contests. They've also covered four of their last five games dating back to last season following an 11-point win over Tampa Bay in Week 1.Will that victory result in a letdown this week? New Orleans is 3-8-1 ATS in its last 12 games after a divisional win. The team is also 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games on Monday night, while the Raiders have covered in four of their last five MNF affairs. The strongest trend play in this one is the under, which is on a 10-4 Monday night run that began in Week 4 last season. Las Vegas has gone under in four straight Monday night games and seven of its last nine in prime time. The Saints, meanwhile, are 8-2-1 to the under in night games since 2017.The high total here helps, too. Since 2017, the Raiders are 9-2-1 to the under when the total is 49.5 or higher, and the Saints are 9-4 to the under over their last 13 in that spot. Las Vegas is also 7-3 to the under in its last 10 as a home underdog.Player propsJared Cook to score a touchdown (+140)With Michael Thomas on the shelf, the Saints will need someone to step up as a primary target over the middle against a vulnerable Raiders pass defense. Insert Cook, who was second on the team in targets (seven) in Week 1 and has scored a touchdown in seven of his last 11 games. The Raiders' linebackers allowed 10 touchdowns in coverage in 2019, and new addition Cory Littleton gave up four TDs with the Rams last year, tied for the seventh-most among linebackers. Touchdown props can be volatile, but there's too much value here in a favorable spot for Cook.Josh Jacobs over 68.5 rushing yards (-112)Yes, the Saints haven't allowed a 100-plus-yard rusher in 44 games. Still, this number is too low. Jacobs is averaging 88.8 rushing yards per game since he was drafted in 2019 and has recorded over 68 yards in 11 of his 14 career games - and one of those three misses was a 66-yard effort. The Raiders' second-year back logged 93 rushing yards a week ago against Carolina, and he should be the focus of Las Vegas' offense while the club tries to shorten the game and keep it close, forcing Drew Brees to make plays with Thomas out.Best betRaiders +5.5The Raiders' hands will be full while trying to stop the Saints' intermediate passing game, but they won't need to fear a full-scale aerial assault from Brees. The veteran QB attempted just four deep passes last week and was tied for the fewest air yards per completion (3.2) of any Week 1 starter - and that was with Thomas playing most of the game.Las Vegas shouldn't struggle to put up points, and its biggest weakness is mitigated with Thomas sidelined. Expect the Raiders to force-feed Josh Jacobs on offense, which should keep the clock ticking and the game close until the end.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Cowboys complete 15-point 4th-quarter comeback vs. Falcons
Greg Zuerlein's 46-yard field goal as time expired gave the Dallas Cowboys an improbable 40-39 comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.Atlanta was up 15 points with 4:45 remaining in the fourth quarter before Dak Prescott scored two late touchdowns (one through the air, one on the ground), and Dallas recovered an onside kick to set up Zuerlein's field goal. The Cowboys endured a slow start to the game behind a struggling offensive line and trailed 29-10 at halftime. Report: Browns have no plans to trade Beckham
The Cleveland Browns have no plans to trade star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., according to ESPN's Adam Schefter."It's totally not true ... No idea where anyone would have gotten that," a source told Schefter regarding the speculation that the wideout could be on the trade block.Rumors that the Browns could move Beckham surfaced during the offseason, but the team has never discussed trading him since acquiring him, Schefter adds. The three-time Pro Bowler struggled in the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens - just 22 yards on three catches - but bounced back in Week 2 during a 35-30 win over the Cincinnati Bengals with four receptions for 74 yards and one touchdown. The New York Giants traded Beckham to the Browns in March 2019 after his first five NFL seasons. The 27-year-old recorded 1,035 receiving yards and four scores on 74 catches in his first year with Cleveland - his worst individual campaign since entering the league (minimum of 10 games played).Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc.
