Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines the significance of those events moving forward. How will the Niners weather this? The 49ers managed to win even though they lost Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas, and Raheem Mostert to injuries in their Week 2 game against the Jets. They were already without Dee Ford, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel, and Richard Sherman going into the matchup. But what are they going to do next? The short answer: Who knows? Head coach Kyle Shanahan is renowned for being a master schemer. Still, even the best coaches need good players, and Shanahan’s down seven starters, including guys at key positions like quarterback, edge rusher, wide receiver, and cornerback. The schedule is somewhat forgiving in the short term, with upcoming games against the winless Giants, Eagles, and Dolphins up next. But then the Niners face the Rams, Patriots, Seahawks, Packers, and Saints in succession before they finally get a bye. Sunday’s win was impressive, but San Francisco, unfortunately, can’t count on seeing the Jets’ rotten carcass every week.Diggs making all the difference Stacy Revere / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe early returns this year suggest Josh Allen has benefited from the infrastructure the Bills have built around him, especially the playcalling of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. The addition of wideout Stefon Diggs, who was acquired via a trade with the Vikings, is already paying huge dividends, too. Allen had one of his best games as a pro in the Bills’ 31-28 win at the Dolphins, with Diggs catching eight passes for 153 yards and a touchdown. Through two games, Diggs has 16 catches for 239 yards and a TD. He’s provided a whole new dimension. The Bills have a solid roster, and they’re well-coached. Allen was always the potential weak link. Diggs may well prove to be the crucial factor in unlocking his potential. One more fun fact that’s likely not-so-fun if you’re a Minnesota fan:
Cam Newton looked like his old MVP self for most of the New England Patriots' Sunday night shootout with the Seattle Seahawks, but the quarterback came up short during the game's biggest play. After running for his second 1-yard touchdown of the contest to bring New England within one score with 2:16 remaining, Newton again advanced his new team to the goal line, this time with three seconds left. But Seattle was ready for Newton's run. The defense swarmed to stuff the quarterback and seal the 35-30 victory."I just didn’t make everybody right and that's the only thing I regret," Newton said after the game, according to USA Today's Mark Daniels. "In that type of situation, it's humbling to be able to have the respect of a team to have the ball in my hands. I just have to deliver. I saw a clip of it; I could've made it right by just bouncing it (outside). I was just trying to be patient. Just thinking too much, man. Or even just diving over the top. There's so many things that flashed over me.“Playing a fast defense like that, as soon as you guess, you’re wrong. I’ll definitely learn from this. The play was there. The play was there all game.”
New England Patriots running back James White missed Sunday Night Football against the Seattle Seahawks after learning his parents were involved in a car accident earlier in the day.White's father, Tyrone, was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred in Florida. White's mother was in critical condition as of Sunday evening."Of course, our hearts go out to him," Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said after the game, which New England lost 35-30, according to NFL Network's Mike Giardi.White, the hero of Super Bowl LI, is in his seventh year with the Patriots. The 28-year-old rushed five times for 22 yards in the season opener, adding three receptions for 30 yards."My heart's heavy because one of my teammates, James White, from Wisconsin, one of the nicest guys, teammates, one of the hardest workers, one of the best people I know had a tough one losing his dad," Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said on NBC after the game. "My heart's been heavy all day thinking about him. Obviously the game was the game ... James, I'm praying for you, man, if you can hear me."Former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady tweeted his condolences after learning the news:
Arik Armstead believes there is a connection between the MetLife Stadium turf and the San Francisco 49ers' injury wrath, and is worried about playing there again in Week 3."(It brings) a lot of anxiety," Armstead said Sunday after the 49ers defeated the New York Jets, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "We see guys you love go down and get hurt and we've got to come back here and play again on the same surface, and that's anxiety-provoking, to see that happen and know you have to do it again."The 49ers lost four starters to knee or ankle injuries against the Jets and will return to MetLife Stadium in one week to face the New York Giants.MetLife Stadium had new turf installed over the summer. Prior to Week 2, the Jets and Giants had scrimmaged on the new field while the Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers played a competitive game on it in Week 1."I know that's as many knee injuries and ankle stuff and people getting caught on the turf as I have ever been a part of," 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "From what I saw, the other team did, too. I know our players talked about it the entire game, just how sticky the turf was ... It was something our guys were concerned about right away and the results definitely made that a lot stronger."49ers injured at MetLife StadiumPlayerPositionDiagnosis (reported)Jimmy GaroppoloQBAnkle sprainNick BosaDEACL tearRaheem MostertRBMCL sprainSolomon ThomasDTTBDThe 49ers were already banged up entering the second game of the year and were without Richard Sherman, George Kittle, Dee Ford, and Deebo Samuel for their first win.
Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Parris Campbell was carted to the locker room during the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings after suffering a knee injury.Campbell, who missed most of his rookie season with multiple injuries, immediately grabbed his left knee after being tackled. The Colts receiver did not tear his ACL and will have an MRI on Monday to determine the full extent of the injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Week 2 was not kind to a large number of NFL stars. The incredible rash of injuries was headlined by New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley and San Francisco 49ers pass-rusher Nick Bosa, who both suffered knee injuries. Christian McCaffrey also exited late in the Carolina Panthers' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and did not return. At least a few of the injuries appeared serious, as the Giants fear Barkley suffered a torn ACL and the 49ers fear Bosa has the same injury. The 49ers were hit harder than others on Sunday. In addition to Bosa, three players exited early into their Week 2 contest, including quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and starting running back Raheem Mostert. Here's a list of key players who were either ruled out early or were unable to re-enter after being listed as questionable.PlayerTeamInjurySaquon BarkleyGiantsKneeNick Bosa49ersKneeJimmy Garoppolo49ersAnkleRaheem Mostert49ersKneeSolomon Thomas49ersKneeChristian McCaffreyPanthersAnkleDavante AdamsPackersHamstringDrew LockBroncosShoulderCourtland SuttonBroncosKnee/CrampingCam AkersRamsRibsJoe NoteboomRamsCalfMalik HookerColtsAchillesParris CampbellColtsKneeByron JonesDolphinsGroinAnthony BarrVikingsShoulderMike BooneVikingsConcussionSterling ShepardGiantsToeKaleb McGaryFalconsKneeRicardo AllenFalconsElbowTakk McKinleyFalconsGroinFoye OluokunFalconsHamstringBreshad PerrimanJetsAnkleQuincy WilsonJetsConcussionDawson KnoxBillsConcussionIsaac SeumaloEaglesKneeBrandon ScherffWashingtonKneeThe staggering numbers even caught the eye of other NFL players who weren't playing Sunday afternoon.
