Raiders place Mariota on injured reserve
The Las Vegas Raiders placed quarterback Marcus Mariota on injured reserve Monday, the team announced.Mariota missed multiple practice sessions last week as he's been battling a pectoral strain, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The signal-caller will now miss at least the first three weeks of the season under the NFL's COVID-19 roster guidelines. The 26-year-old, who's set to back up Derek Carr this season, inked a two-year deal with the Raiders last March after spending the previous five campaigns with the Tennessee Titans. The 2015 second overall pick has posted a 29-32 regular-season record as a starter in the NFL.Las Vegas, which opens its season Sept. 13 on the road against the Carolina Panthers, is expected to have Nathan Peterman as its No. 2 signal-caller until Mariota returns. The Raiders also signed quarterback DeShone Kizer to their practice squad Monday.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kamara after camp absence: 'Never held out in my life'
The New Orleans Saints and Alvin Kamara have yet to agree on an extension, but the star running back says his contract situation would never affect his availability to the team."I ain't never held out in my life," Kamara told reporters Monday, including Mike Triplett of ESPN. "I came to the building every day. That's all I've got to say."Kamara was absent from the Saints training camp without permission for multiple days last week, and reports indicated his absence could have been related to the 25-year-old's contract situation as he enters the last year of a rookie deal. However, he reportedly was sidelined due to a back issue that required an epidural shot, and Kamara isn't concerned about the ailment moving forward."It's something light," said Kamara, who's been participating fully at practice this week. "I kind of dealt with it a little bit last camp too. Just a little flare-up, just a little (sacroiliac) joint flare-up. It just needed some rest, a little injection, but nothing serious."Several standout running backs have signed lucrative deals with their current teams this offseason, including Christian McCaffrey, Joe Mixon, and Derrick Henry. They're now three of the top six highest-paid players at the position.Saints head coach Sean Payton didn't set a timetable for when his club and Kamara will ink an extension, but he's "confident" it'll happen eventually.Kamara quickly became one of the league's most explosive and versatile offensive weapons after being selected in the third round in 2017. The three-time Pro Bowler has racked up 81 receptions and 1,300-plus yards from scrimmage in each of the last three seasons. His 38 total touchdowns rank third in the league over that span.New Orleans kicks off its 2020 season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 13.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Giants set to release Baker amid armed robbery charges
The New York Giants are set to release 2019 first-round pick DeAndre Baker this week, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The cornerback was charged with four counts of armed robbery in early August and his trial is scheduled for Jan. 20, 2021. If convicted, he'll face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and up to life in state prison. The 23-year-old, who has been on the commissioner's exempt list since July, reportedly expected to be cut prior to Week 1.In May, Baker and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar were arrested and accused of robbery in Miramar, Florida. Witnesses said Baker pointed a gun at attendees of a party and directed two other men, including Dunbar, to take their money and valuables. He also allegedly ordered another suspect to shoot an individual who entered during the incident.Prosecutors declined to charge Dunbar, citing "insufficient evidence." Baker's attorney, Bradford Cohen, previously called the charges against his client "disgusting."The Giants selected Baker with the 30th pick in 2019 following his standout career at Georgia.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Ravens also explored sign-and-trade for Clowney
The New Orleans Saints weren't alone in reportedly pursuing an unconventional sign-and-trade for Jadeveon Clowney. The Baltimore Ravens also attempted to form a deal with a third team - the Jacksonville Jaguars - that would've allowed them to essentially trade picks for the cap space and cash needed to sign the pass-rusher, sources told Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. The NFL rejected the idea when approached by the Saints, who would've lost out on Clowney to Baltimore even if the league deemed it legal, Florio added.New Orleans was reportedly in talks with the Cleveland Browns to be the third team.Under the proposal, Cleveland would've signed Clowney to a one-year, $15-million deal and paid his $5-million signing bonus before trading him to the NFC South club for a second-round pick and another player to clear cap room. New Orleans would've then been on the hook for the remaining $10 million.Clowney ultimately signed with the Tennessee Titans, ending the two teams' chances of making a last-minute blockbuster move before the regular season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Peters to play left tackle for Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson announced Monday that Jason Peters offered to switch from guard to left tackle, according to Les Bowen of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Pederson said Peters' decision was "one of those pleasant surprises that we were hoping would come true" but refused to go into contract details.Peters previously said he wouldn't move back without his deal being adjusted after Andre Dillard was lost to a season-ending injury."He was excited to move to left tackle. I'm thrilled to death," said Pederson.Pederson also revealed the team worked out former Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle Cordy Glenn prior to Peters' decision.Peters has put together a Hall of Fame-worthy career in 16 seasons with the Eagles and Buffalo Bills. He has one Super Bowl title (LII), nine Pro Bowl nods, and six All-Pro selections.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
2021 NFL Mock Draft: Way-too-early 1st-round projections
It's never too early for a mock draft. With the college season getting underway and NFL action right around the corner, what better time to look all the way ahead to April, when football worlds will once again collide.Below, theScore's Mike Alessandrini, Dane Belbeck, and Dan Wilkins make some early projections for how the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft could shake out.1. Jacksonville Jaguars - Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson Streeter Lecka / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Jaguars may not intentionally be tanking, but the amount of talent they've lost over the past few years would appear to make them clear front-runners for the No. 1 overall pick. An unflattering status, to be sure, but basement-dwelling this season would come with the opportunity to select one of the most celebrated quarterback prospects of this era. Lawrence is the kind of rare talent who could lead a turnaround in Jacksonville.2. Washington - Justin Fields, QB, Ohio StateWashington won't be anywhere near the No. 2 pick if Dwayne Haskins thrives under Ron Rivera and his staff. However, the NFC East club will certainly need a new quarterback if it does end up in this slot. Enter Fields, who, like Haskins, has also starred at Ohio State but is more of a dual-threat option. The Buckeyes may not be playing this fall, but Fields' 2019 numbers are more than enough proof that he's a worthy top-3 pick.3. Carolina Panthers - Penei Sewell, OT, OregonWith the top two quarterbacks off the board, the Panthers look elsewhere and continue to build the rest of the roster. Sewell is one of the best offensive line prospects in recent memory and would be a phenomenal piece for the future.4. Cincinnati Bengals - Ja'Marr Chase, WR, LSUChase opting out of the 2020 season is a major loss for college football, but he had nothing left to prove. The LSU star may have been the top receiver in last year's loaded class of pass-catchers if he'd been eligible. It'd be tough for the Bengals to pass up the opportunity to reunite him with Joe Burrow as the A.J. Green era comes to an end.5. New York Jets - Gregory Rousseau, EDGE, Miami Mark Brown / Getty Images Sport / GettyRousseau opted out of the 2020 college season, but his 15.5-sack campaign in 2019 provided enough tape on why he's the top pass-rusher in the draft. There's no doubt that Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams would love to add another disruptor to the line, and New York does just that at No. 5.6. Miami Dolphins - Rashod Bateman, WR, MinnesotaUpgrading the receiving corps will be a priority as the Dolphins continue to build around Tua Tagovailoa. Bateman, who profiles as a potential No. 1 option at the next level, would join DeVante Parker in giving Miami a pair of high-upside targets on the outside.7. New York Giants - Micah Parsons, LB, Penn StateSlowly but surely, New York's offense is coming together. The defense still has a ways to go, but landing a leader in the middle, like Parsons, would do wonders for that unit's development. Parsons is the latest in a long line of stud linebackers from Penn State and should be an impact defender on all three downs.8. Las Vegas Raiders - Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota StateIf Jon Gruden decides he's had enough of Derek Carr after three years together, the Raiders will run to the podium to select Lance at No. 8. The North Dakota State star may not have the FBS resumes of Lawrence or Fields, but his pure talent will definitely appeal to Gruden. An exciting young quarterback seems like a perfect way for the Raiders to really take off in Las Vegas.9. Detroit Lions - Patrick Surtain II, CB, AlabamaGoing with a cornerback in the top 10 in back-to-back years may seem odd, but the position has never been more valuable. Pairing Surtain with 2020 first-rounder Jeff Okudah would give the Lions one of the league's most talented, young defensive tandems on the outside.10. Miami Dolphins (from HOU) - Kwity Paye, EDGE, Michigan Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyMiami has done plenty of work to rebuild the defense both at linebacker and in the secondary. Next up is finding pass-rushers to take things to the next level up front, and Paye fits the bill. The Michigan standout would join Christian Wilkins in providing a young foundation for the defensive line.11. Jacksonville Jaguars (from LAR) - Shaun Wade, CB, Ohio StateThe Ohio State defensive back pipeline to the NFL continues with Wade heading to the Jaguars at No. 11. Jacksonville desperately needs playmakers on the backend, and the versatile Wade could pair with CJ Henderson to give the AFC South club a fantastic one-two punch at corner.12. Los Angeles Chargers - Alex Leatherwood, OT, AlabamaThe Chargers' biggest need heading into next offseason would appear to be at left tackle. Landing a player like Leatherwood would be an ideal way to take care of that all-important position for years to come and round out what is quietly becoming one of the NFL's most complete rosters.13. Denver Broncos - Caleb Farley, CB, Virginia TechThe Broncos brought in AJ Bouye following the free-agent departure of Chris Harris, but addressing the long-term future at the cornerback position remains a top priority. Farley is arguably the top player in a talented cornerback class and could be a steal outside the top 12.14. Atlanta Falcons - Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama Scott Cunningham / Getty Images Sport / GettyJulio Jones is undoubtedly among the top receivers in football when healthy, but the Falcons need to stockpile talent for the future. With Jones and Calvin Ridley already on the roster, Atlanta continues dipping into the Alabama talent pool with the game-breaking Waddle.15. Arizona Cardinals - Creed Humphrey, OL, OklahomaThe Kyle Murray-led Cardinals have all the weapons they need to run Kliff Kingsbury's offense. But that unit won't reach its potential until the young quarterback has the protection he needs. Reuniting Murray with former college teammate Humphrey would be another important step in giving him just that.16. Chicago Bears - Rondale Moore, WR, PurdueEven if the Bears are able to re-sign Allen Robinson this offseason, he could certainly use a running mate. The shifty Moore is a big play waiting to happen, particularly after the catch. He would add some much-needed explosiveness to Chicago's offense.17. Cleveland Browns - Dylan Moses, LB, AlabamaMoses would only be available at No. 17 due to his injury history. The Browns would jump at the chance to take one of the most athletic linebackers in the draft, which instantly gives their defense a playmaker behind Myles Garrett.18. Tennessee Titans - Carlos Basham Jr., EDGE, Wake ForestTennessee still has a long-term need on the edge after signing both Jadeveon Clowney and Vic Beasley to one-year deals. Basham is one of the few pass-rushers in this class generating first-round buzz.19. Minnesota Vikings - Trey Smith, OT, TennesseeThe Vikings shouldn't stop adding to the offensive line after taking Ezra Cleveland in the second round this past April. The unit is one of Minnesota's few areas of concern, and Smith is an imposing force who could pave the way for Dalvin Cook and Co. for years to come.20. Buffalo Bills - Quincy Roche, EDGE, Miami Mitchell Leff / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe second defender from Miami goes off the board at No. 20 as Roche joins the Bills. After putting up impressive numbers at Temple, Roche opted to transfer to a Power 5 program for better competition. A strong season with the Hurricanes could actually see Roche move into the top 15.21. Pittsburgh Steelers - Kyle Pitts, TE, FloridaTight end has been a revolving door in Pittsburgh for years. The names coming in and out have never held the offense back from success, but now that the rest of the roster is in such good shape, the Steelers can afford to take care of that spot with a premium pick. Pitts is an impressive athlete who could be a matchup nightmare at the next level.22. Green Bay Packers - DeVonta Smith, WR, AlabamaWho knows whether Aaron Rodgers will still be around to enjoy it, but the Packers finally make a major addition to their receiving corps. Yet another top receiver talent coming out of Alabama, Smith's playmaking ability would fit in nicely opposite Davante Adams.23. New England Patriots - Jaylen Twyman, DL, PittTwyman is a very talented interior pass-rusher and the type of player Bill Belichick will love in New England. He may have just 21 games of experience at the collegiate level after deciding to opt out of the 2020 season, but Twyman's incredible athleticism at the position makes this a steal at No. 23.24. Indianapolis Colts - Jevon Holland, S, OregonLanding a pick this low in the first round would complicate Indy's ideal scenario of picking a quarterback. In this situation, the Colts look to the defensive side, where Holland would slide in as the replacement for impending free agent Malik Hooker.25. Philadelphia Eagles - Tyson Campbell, CB, GeorgiaPhilly may not value corners as much as other teams, but you can only allow a position to be such a glaring problem for so long before addressing the issue. Campbell has all the traits to be a top cover man and he could be a major upgrade opposite Darius Slay.26. New York Jets (from SEA) - Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson Ralph Freso / Getty Images Sport / GettyLe'Veon Bell's addition hasn't beefed up the Jets' offense nearly as much as they hoped, and the addition of Etienne should bring some much-needed excitement to the AFC East club. The speedster from Clemson shocked many by returning to school for 2020 but should be an impact player from Day 1 at the next level.27. Dallas Cowboys - Hamsah Nasirildeen, S, Florida StateThe defensive backfield represents one of few needs on an otherwise loaded Cowboys roster. Nasirildeen's versatility would allow him to be a matchup player who could line up at a number of different positions and make an impact all over the field.28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Marvin Wilson, DT, Florida StateThe Bucs have already done as much as they can to build up the offense around Tom Brady, so the focus here should be on the defensive side. Wilson has impact potential on the interior defensive front, both as a pass-rusher and as a run defender.29. New Orleans Saints - Cameron McGrone, LB, MichiganMcGrone makes up for his lack of experience as a one-year starter with his athleticism. This would be a perfect landing spot for the Michigan standout; he'd join a strong Saints unit to perfect his craft and give New Orleans some depth at linebacker.30. Baltimore Ravens - Justyn Ross, WR, ClemsonRoss could be selected much earlier if he gets a clean bill of health after his neck injury. The uncertainty pushes him down the board for the time being, though, allowing the Ravens to land a big-bodied playmaker who would be the ideal complement to the speedy "Hollywood" Brown.31. San Francisco 49ers - Wyatt Davis, OG, Ohio StateSan Francisco's offensive line is already in a fairly good spot, but a top interior talent could help push that group further among the NFL's elite. Davis was a consensus All-American in 2019 and has consistently dominated opponents up front.32. Kansas City Chiefs - Israel Mukuamu, CB, South CarolinaThe defending champions don't have a ton of holes, but they can address their depth in the secondary. Enter Mukuamu from South Carolina, a rangy 6-foot-4 athlete who is among the draft's more intriguing talents.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Best bets to win the Super Bowl: Bills, Colts have title upside
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. The NFL season is just three days away, which means time is running out to grab the best price on teams to win the Super Bowl. Fortunately, there are still some screaming values on the board, including two mid-tier teams with championship-level rosters. Here are the odds to win Super Bowl LV and our best bets to win it all.TEAMODDSChiefs+400Ravens+65049ers+800Buccaneers+800Saints+900Packers+1400Bears+1500Cowboys+1500Eagles+1500Steelers+1500Patriots+1600Seahawks+1700Vikings+2000Bills+2200Broncos+2500Colts+2500Rams+2500Titans+2500Browns+2700Chargers+3000Texans+3000Falcons+3500Raiders+3500Cardinals+4000Giants+6000Jets+6000Dolphins+6500Jaguars+6500Panthers+7000Lions+7500Bengals+10000Washington+10000Baltimore Ravens (+650)The Ravens were the best team in football last year and one of the most impressive we've seen in decades. They didn't win it all, but they return nearly the entire starting lineup from a 14-win club with a few key additions and a chip on their shoulder after last year's wild-card loss. With shortened training camps, physicality will prove more important than ever this year, and no team is more physical than the Ravens. They added former All-Pro edge rusher Calais Campbell and first-round linebacker Patrick Queen to a defense that was already elite despite a suspect pass rush and linebacker corps. And a year after breaking the NFL rushing record, they added talented Ohio State product J.K. Dobbins to pair with Lamar Jackson and Co.Baltimore has the second-ranked offense and defense heading into 2020, according to PFF - the only team with a top-seven unit on both sides of the ball. You're paying a premium here, but there's no safer bet on the board.Buffalo Bills (+2200)We've gone into great detail about why the Bills are the best bet, but here's a quick reminder of everything you're getting with a ticket on Buffalo. The Bills return 21 of 22 starters from their most-used lineups last year and added a star receiver in Stefon Diggs. They're one of three teams to retain their head coach and coordinators for more than two seasons. And they easily have one of the five best rosters from top to bottom and should improve on last year's 10-win campaign. The only question in Buffalo is whether Josh Allen is ready to take the next step after making a sizable leap from 2018 to 2019. A bad year from the quarterback puts the Bills at 8-8, while a great one could lead them to the Super Bowl.Indianapolis Colts (+2500)In many ways, the Colts had the building blocks of a championship team in 2019. Their offensive line is the best in the NFL and their linebackers are elite, and they were among the league's best last year at defending the run and preventing big plays in the passing game. But they were missing two key elements: a downfield passing game and an effective pass rush.Neither should be an issue this year. Philip Rivers is one of the NFL's most aggressive passers and gets to reunite with former Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich behind the best offensive line the quarterback has ever played behind, and DeForest Buckner is an elite interior pass-rusher whose presence will improve the unit as a whole.Add those two to a roster that already teased title upside a year ago, and it's surprising to see odds this long. The Titans are a formidable division foe, but it's hard to imagine the Colts missing the playoffs, and they're built to dominate in January.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Cam calls fit with Patriots, Belichick 'a match made in heaven'
Cam Newton is apparently living his best life in New England. In the wake of being officially named the Patriots' starter, the former MVP gushed Monday about his experience so far with head coach Bill Belichick and Co., calling the fit "a match made in heaven.""Honestly, it's been so overwhelming at times that I just haven't been able to really grasp it from a whole totality standpoint," Newton said on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show.""I was in Carolina and had given everything to that organization that I possibly can, and I will always have a place in my heart for Carolina. But as a professional, you go where you're summoned to go, and what's best for your career. Just as it will be what's best for the organization. I've just been loving myself and loving this opportunity I've had, coming into this position."Newton inked a one-year, incentive-based deal with New England in late June after receiving minimal interest from other teams on the open market. His deal reportedly contains only $500,000 in guaranteed money, well below the market rate for an experienced starting quarterback. While it was seemingly inevitable that Newton would be named the team's starter, Belichick eased the ex-Panthers standout into his new home and publicly said Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer were also in the running for the top role.Newton said he didn't know what to expect when he joined the club, as "The Patriot Way" is infamously not for every player."The same questions that a lot of people and talk shows, gossip talk, barber-shop talk, (and) chitter-chatter text messages (that) they wanted to know, I wanted to know as well," Newton said. "Is it real what they say about Belichick? Is it going to be too ... I didn't know. I think, honestly, it's been a match made in heaven for me, just knowing that I'm at a place where everything is pulling in the same direction and everything is geared toward winning."Coming from a person that has won at all levels, I feel as if I do the things the right way, trusting a lot of the same people that got me to this point, and trusting coaching, I think this is something that when you look at an opportunity in a timely manner it can be accomplished."Not only will the 31-year-old be tasked with replacing a legend in Tom Brady, but he'll have to also prove his injury woes are behind him.Newton played through a shoulder ailment during the second half of the 2018 season and missed most of the last campaign due to a foot issue, leading some to speculate that his best days are behind him.The star quarterback's first chance to prove his doubters wrong will come in the Patriots' season opener at home Sunday against the Ryan Fitzpatrick-led Miami Dolphins.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Fitzpatrick named Dolphins' starter over Tagovailoa
The beginning of Miami's Tua Tagovailoa era will have to wait.Dolphins head coach Brian Flores announced Monday that veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will start Week 1 against the New England Patriots, according to ESPN's Cameron Wolfe. With limited training camps and virtual offseason workouts, it was expected that Tagovailoa would need to start the campaign as Miami's No. 2 despite receiving a clean bill of health from his hip injury.Fitzpatrick initially started for the Dolphins last season after beating out the recently released Josh Rosen in training camp. The 37-year-old ultimately made 13 starts, with Miami briefly turning to Rosen for three games before returning to the veteran. The Arizona native led the Dolphins to all five of their wins, including a dramatic last-second victory against New England in the regular-season finale.Fitzpatrick finished last season with 3,529 passing yards (the third-best mark of his career) and 20 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.Miami anointed Tagovailoa as its next franchise quarterback by selecting the former Alabama star with the fifth overall pick in April.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Falcons have the sort of continuity that will prove essential following an unprecedented offseason; they return all five starters on the offensive line, the same wide receivers, quarterback, head coach, and coordinators after posting a 6-2 record in the second half of last season.Atlanta will hope Todd Gurley can return to his pre-2019 form and work with the dynamic duo of Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley to put up points in bunches. And if you subscribe to the theory of Matt Ryan being good every other year, he's in line for another big season.YEAR YARDS TDs INTs201944662614201849243572017409520122016494438720154591211620144694281420134515261720124719321420114177291220103705289There remain doubts about the defense, but the unit was vastly improved after Dan Quinn let Raheem Morris take the reins. A.J. Terrell shot up draft boards in April for a reason and Dante Fowler's arrival is a massive boost and big help for 2017 first-round pick Takkarist McKinley. Additionally, Grady Jarrett is one of the league's best interior rushers and rookie Marlon Davidson looks like a force.Arizona Cardinals (+4000)Year 1 under Kliff Kingsbury was the rehearsal, and Year 2 is the show. Kingsbury showed a great willingness to adapt and grow in his first NFL season - a quality many coaches lack. There's a justifiable buzz surrounding this Cardinals offense, which is poised to take a massive leap: Kyler Murray and Christian Kirk return after a full season together, Kenyan Drake will look to build on a strong second half of the campaign, and DeAndre Hopkins now enters the fold. This could be a top-five offense. On the other side of the ball, there's reason to believe Arizona will be improved. Isaiah Simmons has all the tools to provide a massive impact, Devon Kennard was brought in to alleviate the burden on the electrifying Chandler Jones, and Patrick Peterson returns after missing all of 2019 with a broken leg. The Cardinals could be a massive surprise.Detroit Lions (+7500)This is more of a stretch, but I'm buying the number here. The Lions have far too much talent to be offered at a generous 75-1.Matthew Stafford was on pace for a career year in 2019 before getting hurt, and the Lions stumbled to an 0-8 finish without him. He's healthy once again and has an impressive complement of skill players around him to pick up where he left off - a great group of wide receivers, a budding star at tight end, and a potentially dangerous one-two punch in the backfield.Defensively, Detroit brought in a ton of talent during the offseason. Desmond Trufant, Justin Coleman, and Jeff Okudah form a strong trio at corner, while Matt Patricia has called on former Patriots players Jamie Collins, Duron Harmon, and Danny Shelton for reinforcements. Trusting Patricia to get the most out of this group doesn't feel great, but the talent is certainly there.(Odds source: theScore Bet)Alex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. Report: Bucs signing Rosen to practice squad
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are signing quarterback Josh Rosen to their practice squad, sources told Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Rosen went unclaimed on waivers Sunday following his release from the Miami Dolphins. He's joining his third team in as many years. The Arizona Cardinals drafted Rosen with the 10th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, the Cardinals then selected Kyler Murray with the 2019 No. 1 overall pick and traded Rosen to the Dolphins for a second-rounder.Rosen initially failed to win the starting job in Miami, with the team instead opting for Ryan Fitzpatrick. The ex-UCLA standout eventually appeared in six games, throwing just one touchdown to five interceptions and losing all three of his starts.Miami used the fifth overall pick in this year's draft on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, once again pushing Rosen from a possible starting role. He'll learn under Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. The future Hall of Famer's primary backups are Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin.Gabbert appears secure as the No. 2 but Rosen could compete with Griffin for the No. 3 role. Many teams are carrying more quarterbacks on the active roster than in past seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NFL also altered practice squad rules to provide more flexibility for teams.Clubs can now have a maximum of 16 players on their practice squad, including up to six players with more than two accrued seasons. The NFL will also allow up to two players in a given week to be promoted to the active roster without the need for teams to give the players a standard contract.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Clowney to join Titans on reported 1-year deal worth up to $15M
Free-agent pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney will join the Tennessee Titans despite a late push from the New Orleans Saints, he told NFL Insider Josina Anderson. It was reported earlier Saturday that Clowney was headed to the AFC South club, but he said at that time he still hadn't made a final decision.Clowney received a one-year deal worth up to $15 million, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.The former Seattle Seahawks standout reportedly asked for $21 million per season at the start of free agency, but his market was seemingly far weaker than he anticipated. He then reportedly lowered his target to around $18 million per year but was still unable to land a deal and will now have to hit incentives to get close to his desired figure.Clowney will be reunited in Tennessee with head coach Mike Vrabel, who was his position coach and later the defensive coordinator with the Houston Texans during the player's time there. The 27-year-old Clowney said the familiarity with Vrabel played a role in his decision to join the Titans.Clowney battled injuries last year with the Seahawks, as he posted his lowest number of sacks (three) for a season in which he played more than four games. The former South Carolina standout had 18.5 sacks combined over the 2017 and 2018 campaigns.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Lions sign Peterson to 1-year deal
The Detroit Lions are signing Adrian Peterson to a one-year contract, sources told Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The legendary running back's deal is worth $1.05 million plus incentives, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.Peterson was cut by the Washington Football Team on Friday as part of their cut to 53 players. The 35-year-old will reunite with Lions offensive coordinator Darell Bevell, who held the same role with the Minnesota Vikings for Peterson's first three NFL seasons.Peterson will likely compete for carries behind Kerryon Johnson and rookie D'Andre Swift.
Report: Clowney yet to make decision, still fielding calls from teams
The Tennessee Titans are expecting to sign free-agent pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney, reports ESPN's Dianna Russini. However, Clowney told NFL reporter Josina Anderson that he has not yet made a decision and is still fielding calls from teams. The New Orleans Saints were reportedly also making a late push for Clowney, including multiple meetings with head coach Sean Payton. The Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars were also showing interest. The former No. 1 overall draft pick may be playing on a one-year deal in back-to-back seasons. Clowney was franchise tagged by the Houston Texans last season and traded to the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 31. He played out his $15-million deal with the Hawks, where he battled injuries for much of the season on his way to three sacks - a career-low in a season in which he played more than four games.Should he sign with the Titans, Clowney would reunite with Mike Vrabel, who was a position coach with the Texans for the first three years of his career and his defensive coordinator in 2017. Vrabel is now Tennessee's head coach. The Titans ranked 14th in sacks last season with 43 but traded Jurrell Casey - who was second on the team with five sacks - to the Denver Broncos. Before last season, Clowney had nine sacks in 2018 and 9.5 in 2017.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Jaguars schedule visit with Devonta Freeman
The Jacksonville Jaguars have scheduled a free-agent visit with running back Devonta Freeman, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. The development comes the same week the Jaguars released former first-round pick Leonard Fournette and on the day teams are finalizing their 53-man rosters. The Jaguars' final lineup consisted of four running backs - Chris Thompson, Devine Ozigbo, James Robinson, and fullback Bruce Miller. The team did not designate a starter among the group.Freeman was released by the Atlanta Falcons in March after six seasons and received an offer from the Seattle Seahawks in May, but has barely made noise for the majority of the offseason. The 28-year-old had just 656 rushing yards and two scores in 14 games last season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Raiders trade rookie 3rd-rounder Bowden to Dolphins
The Las Vegas Raiders are trading rookie third-round pick Lynn Bowden Jr., a versatile offensive player who was officially drafted as a running back, to the Miami Dolphins, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Kentucky product will head to Miami with a sixth-round pick in exchange for a fourth-round selection. The fourth-round choice was previously owned by the Raiders, who sent it to the Dolphins in a trade for linebacker Raekwon McMillan one week ago.The Raiders drafted Bowden 80th overall, hoping he would thrive as a utility weapon in Jon Gruden's offense and as a returner on special teams. He played quarterback and wide receiver in college, but did most of his damage as a runner. The reports on Bowden out of training camp were underwhelming, which led to questions about the status of his roster spot. NFL teams had until 4 p.m. ET on Saturday to trim their rosters to 53 players.Bowden was an All-American in college last year. He rushed for 1,468 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior despite playing wide receiver. He had 745 yards and five touchdowns receiving in 2018.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Eagles cutting Sidney Jones, looking to trade Alshon Jeffery
The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to release cornerback Sidney Jones, their second-round pick in 2017, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Jones struggled with injuries throughout his time in Philadelphia, appearing in just 22 of a possible 48 games. When healthy, his play wavered. The Eagles made several moves to address their leaky secondary over the offseason, using the trade market, free agency, and draft to acquire Darius Slay, Nickell Robey-Coleman, and K'Von Wallace, respectively, among others. As a result, Jones and former third-round pick Rasul Douglas - who was reportedly also informed of his release - were thought to be on thin ice entering training camp. With rosters needing to be trimmed to 53 players by Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, the Eagles are still looking to trade wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, sources told Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Jeffery's $9.91-million base salary and injury history are believed to be obstacles in a potential move.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Seahawks cut Shaquem Griffin after 2 seasons
Shaquem Griffin, the one-handed linebacker who made the Seattle Seahawks for two straight seasons, was cut Saturday as teams trimmed their rosters to 53 players, reports The Athletic's Michael-Shawn Dugar.Griffin was a fifth-round pick of Seattle in 2018 and went on to appear in 32 games, making one start. He posted 16 tackles and three quarterback hits, with most of his contributions coming on special teams. An amputee since the age of four, Griffin's quest to make the NFL became an inspirational story nationwide ahead of the 2018 draft. The 25-year-old was an All-American defender at UCF.Griffin's twin brother, Shaquill, plays cornerback for the Seahawks and is entering his fourth season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Dolphins release Rosen
Josh Rosen is on the hunt for his third team in as many seasons. The Miami Dolphins released the quarterback, head coach Brian Flores confirmed Saturday, according to Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post."At this time of year, every decision is tough. Josh worked hard, he competed, he did everything we asked, but at this time, we did what was best for the Miami Dolphins," said Flores. With the Dolphins expected to name Ryan Fitzpatrick their starting quarterback and rookie Tua Tagovailoa's clean bill of health following a serious hip injury in November, Rosen's been deemed expendable. The Arizona Cardinals drafted Rosen 10th overall in 2018 but traded him to Miami for a 2019 second-round pick and a 2020 fifth-round selection after landing the first overall pick in the 2019 draft and the right to pick Kyler Murray. The 23-year-old lost a quarterback competition to Fitzpatrick last year. After the Dolphins struggled early, Rosen was named the starter for the remainder of the season. However, coach Brian Flores reversed course and turned back to Fitzpatrick after Rosen went 0-3 in his starts.Rosen is 3-13 in 16 career starts across two seasons while throwing for 2,845 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions. He's completed 54% of his passes and owns a 63.5 quarterback rating. The Dolphins reportedly tried to trade Rosen but were unable to find a partner.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Washington to place Foster on IR, releases Davis
The Washington Football Team will put linebacker Reuben Foster on injured reserve, a source told ESPN's John Keim.Players can only return from IR if they made their team's final 53-man roster, which means Foster won't play this season. Rosters must be finalized by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday. The linebacker tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee in May 2019 shortly after joining Washington. He also sustained nerve damage in his foot, which slowed his recovery. It will be Foster's second straight season on IR.Washington also released safety Sean Davis despite giving the former Pittsburgh Steelers veteran a $2-million signing bonus in March, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Bears expected to name Trubisky starting QB
The Chicago Bears expect to declare Mitchell Trubisky as the team's starting quarterback entering the 2020 season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.Chicago acquired veteran Nick Foles via trade this offseason - who made the battle competitive - but the Bears have been impressed with Trubisky's leadership and performance entering his fourth season, Schefter adds.Trubisky led the Bears to a 12-4 record and their first playoff appearance in eight years in 2018, but he struggled last season in a year where Chicago finished 8-8 and outside the postseason. It led the club to decline his fifth-year option and trade a fourth-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Foles. In a contract year, Trubisky will open the campaign under center against the Detroit Lions in Week 1.He'll have a respected voice and former Super Bowl MVP as his immediate backup. Broncos release Todd Davis after 6 seasons
The Denver Broncos released veteran linebacker Todd Davis on Thursday.Davis, who's been with the Broncos for the last six seasons, battled a calf injury during training camp, but he's fully recovered from the issue, according to Pelissero. The 28-year-old is coming off back-to-back 100-plus-tackle campaigns and led Denver in tackles in each of the last two seasons. The Broncos claimed Davis off waivers in 2014 after he was released by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted rookie.Denver lost fifth-round rookie Justin Strnad to a season-ending injury this offseason. Raiders cut Damarious Randall
The Las Vegas Raiders have released safety Damarious Randall despite guaranteeing his base salary for the 2020 season, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Randall received $1.5 million guaranteed with a chance to reportedly earn another $1.75 million via incentives when he inked a one-year agreement in April. However, the Raiders will owe him less if he signs with another team.Randall joined the Raiders following a two-year stint with the Cleveland Browns, with whom he started all 26 games he appeared in. The 28-year-old owns 14 career interceptions over five professional seasons split between the Browns and Green Bay Packers. With Randall out of the fold, the Raiders figure to give most of the safety snaps to Johnathan Abram, Jeff Heath, and Erik Harris. Washington releases Adrian Peterson after 2 seasons
The Washington Football Team cut veteran running back Adrian Peterson on Friday after two seasons, the team announced. The club exercised the 2020 option on Peterson's contract in February. The deal was signed in 2019 and was worth $5.03 million, according to Spotrac."Adrian Peterson is the epitome of what it means to be a pro in this league," head coach Ron Rivera said in a statement at the time. "Adrian's leadership and passion toward the game of football will set an example of what is expected of the players in this program moving forward."Though Peterson admitted he "didn't see this happening," the 35-year-old "without a doubt" plans to continue playing ahead of his 14th NFL season, he told John Keim of ESPN.Three teams have already inquired about the veteran runner since the release, a source told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.Peterson was productive last season, racking up 898 yards (4.3 per carry) and five scores across 15 games for last-place Washington. The future Hall of Famer is a former MVP, four-time All-Pro, seven-time Pro Bowler, and sits fifth on the all-time yards list among running backs (14,216) while also ranking fourth in rushing touchdowns (111).Washington also cut running back Derrius Guice this summer after the 23-year-old was charged with multiple counts of domestic violence.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Best bets to win NFL MVP: Allen, Tannehill are live long shots
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section.Few markets have had as much upside for NFL bettors in recent years as the one for the MVP award. In 2018, Patrick Mahomes cashed as a 100-1 long shot, and Lamar Jackson did the same in 2019.Will we see another surprise winner, or will Mahomes or Jackson add to their trophy case? Here are the odds for NFL MVP (shorter than 100-1) with our best bets a week before the 2020 season.PLAYERODDSPatrick Mahomes+400Lamar Jackson+600Russell Wilson+800Deshaun Watson+1200Dak Prescott+1400Carson Wentz+1600Drew Brees+1600Aaron Rodgers+2000Tom Brady+2000Field+2500Kyler Murray+2500Jimmy Garoppolo+3000Matt Ryan+3000Baker Mayfield+3200Ben Roethlisberger+4000Philip Rivers+4000Saquon Barkley+4000Derrick Henry+4200Christian McCaffrey+4500Kirk Cousins+5000Cam Newton+6000Daniel Jones+6000Ezekiel Elliott+6000Jameis Winston+6000Jared Goff+6000Josh Allen+6000Matthew Stafford+6000Michael Thomas+6000Ryan Tannehill+6000Dalvin Cook+7000Alvin Kamara+8000Amari Cooper+8000Andy Dalton+8000Derek Carr+8000Gardner Minshew+8000Le'Veon Bell+8000Mitchell Trubisky+8000Nick Chubb+8000Nick Foles+8000Odell Beckham Jr.+8000Sony Michel+8000Teddy Bridgewater+8000Dak Prescott (+1400)It's easy to forget in the aftermath of the Jackson-Russell Wilson 2019 MVP debate that Prescott was a legitimate candidate for the much of the season, and the metrics back it up. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback finished the regular season fourth in ESPN's QBR (71.9), third in expected points added (93.1), and second in both passing yards (4,902) and first downs (229).Dallas added Oklahoma star CeeDee Lamb to an offense that should be more aggressive with new coach Mike McCarthy replacing Jason Garrett. If Prescott puts up 5,000 yards and 35 touchdowns - which he nearly did last year - with double-digit wins, this price will look silly.Josh Allen (+6000)After Mahomes and Jackson cashed as long shots in consecutive years, you'd think the market would have corrected on mobile, big-armed quarterbacks with first-round pedigree and elite roster talent around them. Yet here we are with Allen, the most obvious MVP long shot and a stellar value at 60-1.We've already seen the Buffalo Bills quarterback make tremendous improvements to his game. He went from one of the league's worst intermediate passers in 2018 to one of the best in 2019, and he dramatically lowered his interception rate, too. Now he needs to improve under pressure and with his deep ball, just as Jackson did last year.Having two of the premier deep-ball receivers in Stefon Diggs and John Brown will help matters, as will a third season with the same coaching staff and an improving offensive line. If Allen is the same QB he was in 2019, this is a wasted bet. But there's no better value on the board if he takes another leap.Ryan Tannehill (+6000)Tannehill always had the talent to produce elite numbers, but he was long trapped behind a poor offensive line with bad receivers with the Miami Dolphins. In his first year with the Tennessee Titans, he showed just how good he can be in the right system. His 117.5 passer rating was fourth-best in NFL history, and he became only the second quarterback in the Super Bowl era to complete more than 70% of his passes and average more than 9.0 yards per attempt. By season's end, he was the highest-graded quarterback by PFF over Drew Brees, Jackson, and Wilson - and that was without a full season as the starter, which he'll get heading into 2020.You either believe in Tannehill's 2019 breakout or you don't, but the numbers support his success in a new environment. Skepticism is clearly baked into the price, which makes it well worth the gamble on a player with tons of upside.(Odds source: theScore Bet)C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Report: Buccaneers cut Gay after signing Succop
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are waiving kicker Matt Gay one year after using a fifth-round draft choice on him, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. The move comes two days after the Buccaneers officially signed veteran Ryan Succop, who went 1-for-6 on field goals last year before being cut by the Tennessee Titans. Succop was one of the more consistent placekickers in the NFL in previous seasons.Gay, a two-time All-Pac-12 selection and former Lou Groza Award winner in college, went a pedestrian 27-for-35 on field goals as a rookie. The Utah product was expected to stop the revolving door of kickers in Tampa. The Buccaneers also cut running back Dare Ogunbowale to help alleviate their logjam in the backfield following the addition of Leonard Fournette, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Colts reportedly make Kelly highest-paid center with $50M extension
The Indianapolis Colts signed center Ryan Kelly to an extension Thursday. The 2019 Pro Bowler landed a four-year, $50-million extension that will make him the highest-paid center in the NFL, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. The 2016 first-round pick has started every game he's played for with the Colts since he was drafted. Kelly helped anchor an offensive line that powered the seventh-ranked running game and allowed the ninth-fewest sacks last season."I haven't told a lot of people this, but I never wanted to play anywhere else. The Tennessee Titans have maintained an interest in signing Clowney, according to Rapoport, and the Seattle Seahawks are monitoring the situation.Clowney has spoken with Saints coach Sean Payton multiple times, according to Pelissero.New Orleans is making the pursuit despite being hard up against the salary cap and embroiled in contract negotiations with star running back Alvin Kamara, who's seeking a new deal. When asked Thursday about the Seahawks pursuing Clowney, head coach Pete Carroll said: "Always competing. Always competing," according to ESPN's Brady Henderson. The pass-rusher's price is currently too high for Seattle, reports ESPN's Dianna Russini, who adds that the Jacksonville Jaguars are also interested. After five seasons with the Houston Texans, Clowney spent last year with the Seahawks, where he recorded personal lows of 27 tackles and three sacks in 13 games while battling injuries. Jets' Bell on relationship with Gase: 'We actually like each other'
New York Jets running back Le'Veon Bell said he doesn't know where the speculation is coming from regarding a strained relationship between him and head coach Adam Gase."I don't understand why everybody is trying to put me and Gase against each other," Bell told reporters Thursday, including Rich Cimini of ESPN. "We're not against each other. I don't understand why it's so hard to believe, but we actually like each other."Bell added: "Ever since I got here and he got here, there's kind of been this little thing of me and him butting heads all the time, which I don't know where it comes from ... We had a long conversation (last week) because basically people (blew) it out of proportion because I did make the tweet."Bell was frustrated after the Jets pulled him out of practice last week for precautionary reasons. The three-time Pro Bowler took to Twitter to deny he was sidelined because of a hamstring issue, as Gase announced. The coach later said they had a "good talk" about the incident."It was no big deal," Bell said. "It was just a miscommunication between me, the trainers, and coach Gase. But I just want to really clear it up for everybody, fantasy owners, and everybody: my hamstring is fine."The Jets signed Bell to a four-year, $52.5-million deal in March 2019, but it was reported two months later that Gase was against the idea of investing significant money in a running back.Bell and Gase both underachieved in their debuts for the Jets last year. With some further development from a pair of first-round linemen the team drafted in 2019, the offense should be able to funnel enough volume Jones' way to cash at reasonable odds.DJ Moore (+2800)Few players have started their career with as much promise as Moore. He finished ninth last year with 1,175 receiving yards, and his yards per game would have ranked fourth if not for an injury early in Week 16. It was a historic campaign nonetheless - his receiving yardage was the 14th-highest in a season in NFL history for a player before their 23rd birthday, cracking a list littered with current and future Hall of Famers. The injury prematurely ended a torrid stretch for Moore, who'd amassed 711 receiving yards over his previous seven games - good for a ridiculous 1,625-yard pace. He did that despite unstable quarterback play, so his upside is even higher with Teddy Bridgewater manning Joe Brady's offense in Carolina. This might be the best price he sees for his entire career.A.J. Brown (+3300)A market like this only rewards elite upside, and Brown certainly has that. In 2019, he became only the 15th rookie to record at least 1,050 receiving yards and posted the fourth-best catch rate (61.9%) among those players. He was also incredibly efficient getting there - his 12.51 yards per target ranked third in NFL history (min. 75 targets) by any player since the stat was introduced in 1992.The Titans' rising star averaged 100.8 yards over his final six games with Ryan Tannehill at the helm. That's a 1,613-yard pace over a full year, which would have led the league in two of the last four seasons. Sure, it won't come that easy over 16 games, but the potential is there for Brown to explode as a long shot.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Report: Dolphins fielding trade inquiries for Rosen
The Miami Dolphins recently fielded trade inquiries for quarterback Josh Rosen, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Rosen fell to the third spot on the Dolphins' quarterback depth chart this offseason behind veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and first-round rookie Tua Tagovailoa. The Dolphins acquired the 2018 No. 10 overall pick in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals in April 2019. He started three games early last season but finished the year as Fitzpatrick's backup. The 23-year-old completed 53.2% of his pass attempts for 567 yards and one touchdown against five interceptions through six games last season. In 20 career appearances (16 starts), Rosen has posted a 3-13 record and thrown 12 TDs against 19 INTs.Head coach Brian Flores hasn't officially named the Dolphins' starting quarterback, but Fitzpatrick is the presumptive candidate to remain under center for Week 1.Tagovailoa, the fifth overall pick last April, began his NFL career recovering from a hip injury. He's been practicing without limitations at training camp, but Flores recently said his injury is a factor in Miami's early-season plans at quarterback.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Arians says Jones remains Bucs' starter despite Fournette signing
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers added three new running backs this offseason, but none of them will be on top of the depth chart when the season kicks off.Head coach Bruce Arians said it's still Ronald Jones' job to lose despite the arrivals of veteran LeSean McCoy, third-round rookie Ke'Shawn Vaughn, and former first-round pick Leonard Fournette."It's his job. Nothing has changed for him," Arians said of Jones on Thursday, according to Jon Ledyard of Pewter Report. "It's his job, he's got it, he's got to screw it up to lose it and I don't see that happening."The Buccaneers, who signed Fournette to a one-year deal Wednesday, have yet to see a breakout year from Jones. After an injury-plagued, unimpressive rookie campaign, the 2018 second-round pick racked up 724 yards (4.2 yards per carry) and six touchdowns last season.Adding a high-profile running back with less than two weeks before the regular season could've meant one of the runners would get cut. With Tampa Bay not expected to release McCoy - the favorite to be dropped - Arians is set to have valuable depth in the backfield."That's one position I don't think you can have enough good guys," Arians said, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. "That's the one area where nicks and bruises really add up."McCoy appeared in 13 games for the Kansas City Chiefs last season, amassing 465 yards and four touchdowns.Fournette rushed for 1,152 yards and three touchdowns through 15 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019. The 2017 fourth overall pick also caught 76 passes for 522 yards."Rojo's our guy, (McCoy) is ready for his role, so it's just gonna be building roles as we go along and having enough quality players to finish this thing," Arians added, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Seahawks re-sign Gordon as WR awaits reinstatement
The Seattle Seahawks re-signed wide receiver Josh Gordon, his agency announced Thursday. The 29-year-old applied for reinstatement in June and is awaiting the league's decision. He'll receive a one-year contract from the Seahawks and could earn more than $1 million, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.Gordon led the NFL in receiving in 2013 before suspensions derailed his career. He received his fifth ban in December after violating the league's policies on performance-enhancing drugs and substance abuse. He was hoping to be cleared in time for training camp in July and will now attempt to be reinstated before the start of the regular season. The receiver was waived by the New England Patriots last October and Seattle claimed him shortly after. He played in five games for the Seahawks prior to his suspension, catching seven passes for 139 yards.Gordon joins a loaded receiving corps for star quarterback Russell Wilson that includes Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, Phillip Dorsett, Paul Richardson, and David Moore.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. 10 NFL veterans in danger of being cut
Earl Thomas. Leonard Fournette. Mohamed Sanu. For one reason or another, three NFL teams released these veterans before the 2020 season even began. There are still several seasoned pros in danger of joining them in the unemployment line, with final roster cuts coming by Saturday's deadline. Here are 10 notable players whose jobs are at risk.Dede Westbrook, WR, Jaguars Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyWith the mass exodus currently taking place in Jacksonville, it should come as no surprise if the Jaguars opt to release one of their few remaining big names.Westbrook is entering the final year of his rookie contract, but a shoulder injury leaves his availability for Week 1 questionable. He may be hard-pressed to survive cuts and keep his spot among a group of impressive youngsters in DJ Chark, Keelan Cole, Chris Conley, and rookies Laviska Shenault and Collin Johnson.Vic Beasley, OLB, TitansAfter failing to meet expectations with the Atlanta Falcons, Beasley signed a one-year contract with the Tennessee Titans in March in hopes of landing a starting spot opposite Harold Landry. A disastrous summer followed, as the 2015 first-round pick reported to training camp more than a week late and failed a physical upon his arrival.Head coach Mike Vrabel said Beasley is working his way back to football shape but is still without a timetable to return. With Kamalei Correa and D'Andre Walker on the depth chart, the young pass-rusher can't be guaranteed a roster spot. Beasley could be stashed on the PUP list or injured reserve to begin the year, or Vrabel and the Titans could simply give up on the experiment.Paxton Lynch, QB, Steelers Scott Taetsch / Getty Images Sport / GettyAfter losing Ben Roethlisberger to an elbow injury, the Steelers thought to bring in Lynch as insurance behind Mason Rudolph and Devlin "Duck" Hodges. Through the first weeks of training camp, Rudolph seems solidified as the backup quarterback, leaving Hodges and Lynch to duke it out for the final spot.Lynch was reportedly erratic and inaccurate at last Monday's practice, then was the only quarterback that didn't get any reps during the squad's scrimmage at Heinz Field on Friday. The former Denver Broncos draft bust may not last long in the Steel City.Hakeem Butler, WR, CardinalsButler appears to be the forgotten man in the now-celebrated Cardinals receiving corps. When quarterback Kyler Murray mentions the potential of three 1,000-yard receivers, he means DeAndre Hopkins, Larry Fitzgerald, and Christian Kirk. When the discussion comes to which Arizona wideout will provide the speed element, it's between Andy Isabella or KeeSean Johnson. For Butler, it's mostly been out of sight, out of mind - the 2019 fourth-round pick missed his entire rookie season with a finger injury. The Cardinals' pass-catching group might just be too talented to leave a spot for Butler.Sidney Jones, CB, Eagles Elsa / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe report out of Eagles camp is Jones has fallen out of favor in Jim Schwartz's defense and could end up on the trade block. The three-year pro is in the final year of his contract and could become a rental for a team needing help at corner.Jones has played in 22 games in three seasons while battling injuries for the majority of his career. He's also barely participating in practice during camp. With plenty of healthy bodies available at the position, the 24-year-old could prove expendable.Justin Evans, S, BuccaneersTampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians has still not seen the 2017 second-round pick in game action and is probably not inclined to keep the injured safety. Evans missed the 2019 season entirely with foot ailments and is missing camp to deal with the same issues. The Bucs are young at safety, but 2020 second-round pick Antoine Winfield Jr. has been impressing the team with his performance in camp. The team's indicated they'll use the versatile defensive back at various positions across the secondary, and he'll be backed by fellow youngsters Mike Edwards and Jordan Whitehead if Tampa's ready to move on from Evans.Keke Coutee, WR, Texans Quinn Harris / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe DeAndre Hopkins trade may have inadvertently hurt Coutee's time with the Texans. Houston responded by trading for Brandin Cooks and adding Randall Cobb, giving the team a deep group of pass-catchers.With the Texans expecting a larger role for Will Fuller after Hopkins' departure, Kenny Stills penciled in, and DeAndre Carter's special teams value, Coutee is now on the bubble. He's battled injuries his first two seasons and continues to do so during camp. His unavailability isn't boding well for his chances of making the roster.Jordan Wilkins, RB, ColtsThe arrival of Jonathan Taylor pushes Wilkins into a precarious position. With Marlon Mack and Taylor vying for the starting job and Nyheim Hines distinguished as the third-down back, Wilkins may not be so useful to Indianapolis. The Colts did cut veteran fullback Roosevelt Nix, presumably opening a roster spot for a fourth running back. But if the Colts are confident enough in their first three rushers, that spot may be best suited to a position with more dire needs.Lamar Miller, RB, Patriots Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThe Patriots own one of the more crowded backfields in the league, making it difficult for Miller to escape the final cuts. New England signed the veteran back last month, almost one year to the date after he suffered a torn ACL with the Texans.Although the Patriots have struggled with Sony Michel, Damien Harris, James White, and Rex Burkhead collectively leading the unit last season, Miller's had little time to prove he's worthy of supplanting any of those Pats mainstays.Margus Hunt, DE, SaintsThe Saints probably don't have a spot for a seven-year veteran who had 17 tackles in 16 games last season with the Colts, now that they're finally deep at defensive end.New Orleans signed Hunt to a one-year deal in late April, but after camp, it appears the Saints are deciding between the 33-year-old and 26-year-old Mario Edwards, who spent last season with the club.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Fan nominates Kaepernick for Hall of Fame
A Vermont man nominated former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his efforts to raise awareness for racial inequality and police brutality. After discovering that anyone can make a nomination, Bob Birkett sent a letter to the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio asking that Kaepernick be inducted under the contributor category, according to Nancy Armour of USA Today."It is my pleasure, privilege, and responsibility as a supporter of racial equality to nominate Mr. Colin Kaepernick," Birkett wrote in his letter. "Mr. Kaepernick has shown exceptional courage in highlighting the damaging effects of racial injustice on Black people and on our society as a whole. His respectful kneeling posture has created a powerful symbol for those who are oppressed by our society."The contributor category is for individuals who have made "outstanding career contributions to pro football in capacities other than playing or coaching." It was added to the Hall of Fame in 2014."He's gotten a raw deal for so long," Birkett said of Kaepernick. "It's a little bit like (Muhammad Ali refusing to serve in Vietnam). The initial reaction was, 'Holy cow what a horrible thing.' Then a little while later, it's like, 'Man, that guy had some guts.'"You think, 'What can I do?' I can't force an owner to hire the guy. But darn it! I can put him in the Hall of Fame."The earliest Kaepernick's nomination could be considered is 2022.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Titans bring in former Patriots kicker Gostkowski
The Tennessee Titans agreed to terms with veteran free-agent kicker Stephen Gostkowski, the team announced Thursday.Gostkowski, 36, spent 14 seasons with the New England Patriots, winning three Super Bowls before being released this offseason.Tennessee waived Greg Joseph in a corresponding move, meaning Gostkowski is likely to open the 2020 campaign as the club's kicker.Gostkowski, a fourth-round pick in 2006, was one of the NFL's most productive specialists during his New England tenure. He's the franchise's all-time leader in total points and field goals made, while his 205 postseason points are second in league history behind Adam Vinatieri. The four-time Pro Bowler missed all but four games in 2019 after sustaining a left hip injury in October. He hit on seven of his eight field-goal attempts and went 27-for-32 the year prior.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Patriots releasing Mohamed Sanu
The New England Patriots are releasing veteran receiver Mohamed Sanu, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.Sanu's stint with the Patriots comes to an end after just eight games. New England traded a second-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons last October for him, and the club received just 207 yards and one touchdown from the wideout.Sanu's release will free up $6.5 million in cap space, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. It will also leave the Patriots thin on experience at the position. As it stands now, sophomore N'Keal Harry and little-used wideouts Damiere Byrd, Jakobi Meyers, Gunner Olszewski, and Devin Ross will flank former Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman.Prior to his short stay in New England, Sanu spent four years with the Cincinnati Bengals and three-plus seasons with the Falcons.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc.
