Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry dominated college football together at LSU, and the Cleveland Browns believe the duo is primed for a big 2019 in the pros."It could be pretty special, but again, we've got a long way to go," wide receivers coach Adam Henry told reporters, according to Browns staff writer Nick Shook. "It's something that you look forward to and potentially on paper, it's something that's good. But just getting the rapport, the me-to-you, things of that nature. We've got a quarterback that can throw it with great leadership, and with Freddie's mind and play-calling we'll be in a good situation."Beckham, who was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the New York Giants in March, has participated in one of nine voluntary practices since the beginning of organized team activities, which wrap up Friday. Head coach Freddie Kitchens asserted on Thursday that Beckham missed "a lot" by sitting out.Landry, meanwhile, sat out OTAs with a minor injury and will also skip next week's mandatory minicamp, so Browns fans may have to wait a while before seeing the two take the field together. The wideouts played three seasons together at LSU and each tallied 1,000-yard-plus receiving campaigns before going pro. Henry served as their positions coach from 2012-2013."It's a great thing," Henry said, according to NFL.com's Grant Gordon. "Just sitting in the meetings and they were kinda shaking their heads saying, 'Wow, this is different.' Being in the meeting room with them at LSU was a good thing and to be here, it's kinda surreal."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh understands he has a reputation for being a "dirty player," but he's not letting that bother him as he prepares for the season with his new team."I think when people have seen blips of me ... it's been in a negative light, rather than a positive light and that's due to outlets of media, social media, whatever it may be," Suh said, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine. "I can deal with that because I know who I am as a person, I know who my parents are, what kind of child they brought up - it's irrelevant in my life."I think the people that know me the best see me always in a good light and see the troubles and tribulations that I've gone through, as any human being goes through in their lives."Suh has accumulated 71 accepted penalties since he was drafted in 2010 - more than any other player in the league - and has also been fined $336,098.The Buccaneers signed the former No. 2 overall pick to a reported one-year, $9.25-million deal on May 23, filling the opening that was created when longtime defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was released. Head coach Bruce Arians prefers to focus on Suh's game rather than his reputation."We're all here to win, and once you're in the same locker room you can forget all the past stuff," he said. "Some of that stuff happened a long time ago and I don't really care. That doesn't bother me. The way he plays football - I like that. So he's a good fit for us."Suh notched 59 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and two fumble recoveries for the Los Angeles Rams in 2018.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Following the release of Kareem Hunt last November, Damien Williams emerged as the Kansas City Chiefs' most reliable rusher the rest of the way.As a result, the Chiefs are ready to turn to Williams as their full-time starting running back in 2019."Damien Williams is our starter," offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said Thursday, according to the Kansas City Star's Blair Kerkhoff. "We expect him to excel in that role."Williams started the final three games of the 2018 regular season and scored six touchdowns while averaging 5.1 yards per carry. He added two more scores in the playoffs.Chiefs general manager Brett Veach had said in February that the job was Williams' to lose, but it appears Bieniemy believes there's no need for a training camp battle or committee approach. The team added veteran running back Carlos Hyde in free agency and drafted Darwin Thompson in the sixth round of April's draft.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Former NFC South rival Gerald McCoy is visiting with the Carolina Panthers on Friday and it could take the weekend for the free-agent defensive tackle - who made previous visits with the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens - to make his decision, a source informed ESPN's Adam Schefter.McCoy spent nine years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, battling with the Panthers twice a season, before the player and team mutually agreed to part ways May 20.In 15 career games against the Panthers, McCoy had 34 solo tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 10 quarterback hits.Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti spoke glowingly of the team's meeting with McCoy on Wednesday and said he's "excited" about the potential addition. Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens said Thursday he's also optimistic about Cleveland signing the free agent.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Cam Newton has taken a positive step in his recovery from shoulder surgery, as the Carolina Panthers quarterback began throwing overhand with regulation-sized footballs on Thursday, a league source told Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer.Newton, 30, remains on schedule to participate in team workouts during training camp but won't be rushed back, reports Rodrigue. The dual-threat passer claimed to be "feeling great" earlier in May and hoped to be throwing consistently before camp in July. The beginning of a throwing program represents the next big step in the former MVP's rehabilitation process after he went under the knife this offseason.Carolina began the 2018 season with a 6-2 record, but the offense sputtered as Newton battled health issues. The Panthers averaged just 18.8 points per game over a six-game losing streak from Weeks 10 to 15, a stark drop from the 27.5 points per game they produced to start the campaign. With the Panthers out of the playoff race following their skid, Newton sat out the final two games of the season as Carolina dropped its seventh straight before wrapping up the campaign with a road win at New Orleans.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Kyler Murray is most often compared to Russell Wilson due to his small stature, elite scrambling ability, and talent for making game-changing plays outside the structure of his offense. But when it comes to the No. 1 overall pick's arm talent, the comparison several Arizona Cardinals players opted for was Patrick Mahomes, who won the MVP award in his first year and is widely considered to have one of the league's strongest arms."You could compare it to that. It's very unique, for sure," said wide receiver Christian Kirk, who spent a year in college with Murray, according to Robert McMananman of the Arizona Republic. "I've talked about it before. Obviously, everyone knows what he can do with his legs, but what he's able to do with his arm and just the way it comes off his hand. It's never a duck; it's always a spiral."It's just so quick coming off his hands and the ball is usually never late and it's usually never underthrown."Star running back David Johnson's set to be on the receiving end of a ton of targets from Murray in head coach Kliff Kingsbury's air-raid offense, and he thinks the Mahomes comparison is far from hyperbole."I think you can say that, yeah. That’s a good comparison," Johnson said. "It's high praise, but I think it's a good comparison. Kyler's got one heck of an arm, that's for sure."For Kingsbury, the similarities between Murray and Mahomes - whom he coached for three seasons at Texas Tech - goes beyond pure arm strength."They don't always have to be on a perfect plane or a great pocket," Kingsbury said. "They can throw from spaces or moving or falling off balance and still be accurate and throw with velocity and touch."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Peyton Manning acknowledged Thursday that he had discussions with ESPN about joining its Monday Night Football broadcast.Manning's name has been linked to the job since his retirement from the NFL after the 2015 campaign. The position previously occupied by Jason Witten became vacant this offseason when the tight end chose to return to the Dallas Cowboys after one year in the booth."I talked to the Monday Night Football folks. I enjoyed talking to them. I had great conversation. It wasn't the right time this year. Maybe it will never be," Manning said, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic. The 43-year-old former quarterback says he spends much of his time with family and volunteering with his children's sports teams. However, he didn't shut the door on a future role in the NFL or broadcasting."I enjoy talking and listening," he said. " ... I think that's all you can do is listen and who knows what it leads to down the road."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Odell Beckham Jr. will be playing catch - or catch-up - when the superstar wideout reports to the Cleveland Browns' mandatory minicamp next week.Head coach Freddie Kitchens said Thursday that Beckham missed "a lot ... the offense," by sitting out voluntary organized team activities, according to the Akron Beacon Journal's Nate Ulrich.Beckham, who was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the New York Giants in March, has participated in one of nine practices since the beginning of OTAs, which wrap up Friday. The Browns are counting on Beckham to turn their offense into one of the most dangerous in the NFL in 2019. He hauled in 77 catches for 1,052 yards and six touchdowns in 12 games for the Giants last year and eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark in four of his first five NFL campaigns. The only time he fell short of 1,000 yards was in 2017, when an ankle injury limited him to four games."I just want to see him," Kitchens said, referring to next week's minicamp.Beckham skipped voluntary practices last year with the Giants while recovering from ankle surgery and awaiting a new contract, and he attended all mandatory sessions. As is the case this year with the Browns, Beckham had to learn a new offense last season, as Pat Shurmur took over the Giants. While Beckham is expected to partake in minicamp, his close friend and teammate, Jarvis Landry, is expected to be held out with an injury for precautionary reasons, Kitchens said.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jeffrey Lurie is the proud owner of a Lombardi Trophy, but he admits he's made his share of mistakes during his 25 years as owner of the Philadelphia Eagles.Lurie spoke of both his successes and failures with Sheil Kapadia of The Athletic and admitted there's one move in particular he'd like to have back: giving former head coach Chip Kelly personnel control in 2014."I don't regret the hiring of him because it was done with a really good thought process. But, yes, I would say I regret giving him the kind of authority I gave him, yeah. That's an easy one," Lurie said.Lurie hired Kelly out of the University of Oregon and watched as the offensive whiz put together back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2013 and 2014. Kelly was then given authority over the personnel department, reducing the role of general manager Howie Roseman. He subsequently traded LeSean McCoy and Nick Foles and released Jeremy Maclin prior to the 2015 campaign. Kelly had released DeSean Jackson the prior offseason.Kelly was fired in Week 16 of the 2015 season, in which the Eagles finished 7-9.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Free-agent defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has yet to decide where he'll sign next, but one team owner is already bracing for his potential addition.Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti couldn't help but dream up the possibilities after hosting McCoy on a free-agent visit across Tuesday and Wednesday."I'm pretty excited to have a guy like Gerald McCoy potentially adding to our defense," Bisciotti said on a conference call with personal seat license holders Wednesday, according to Ravens staff writer Clifton Brown."He came in, I had a nice opportunity to meet him in the hallway before we started our press conference today."McCoy left Baltimore without a deal, but negotiations are apparently continuing between the camps. However, the Ravens aren't the only team in the running. McCoy met with the Cleveland Browns before visiting Baltimore and he's reportedly setting up a meeting with the Carolina Panthers next."I hope McCoy wants us," Bisciotti said. "I hope Gerald McCoy goes home and tells his wife that he needs to play for the Ravens. I think we could welcome him with open arms, and I think he could do some damage in the backfield this year."After losing defenders Terrell Suggs, C.J. Mosley, and Za'Darius Smith to free agency, Bisciotti envisions McCoy slotting in with Brandon Williams and Michael Pierce."I think he's a bit of a game-wrecker, and I think in this day and age, you need that kind of pressure on the inside," the owner said. "We've got some guys on the edge that are going to have to prove themselves. We've got two nice tackles, when you look at (Pierce) and Brandon. (McCoy is) clearly a 3-technique. He brings something to the table that we don't have."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

He then spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns, and Washington Redskins, before splitting the 2018 season between the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. He posted a career year with the Browns in 2016, catching 77 passes for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns. The NFL could re-evaluate an expansion of the regular season or an increased number of playoff teams during upcoming negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, sources told Mark Maske of The Washington Post.A high-ranking official with one team told Maske that some owners want to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18 games in order to boost revenue, adding it's unclear how much support such a change would garner from players. The source also said they "suspect the owners will be a little more flexible" during talks regarding commissioner Roger Goodell's disciplinary powers and the league's marijuana policy. Such flexibility could potentially be used to get players' support for more games.Owners who want to revisit regular-season expansion reportedly believe concessions such as a decreased number of preseason games or an increase in roster sizes could aid in the issue of player safety.A postseason expansion, according to Maske, could serve as an alternative to a longer regular season and would see the number of qualifying teams increase from 12 to 14, including seven from each conference. Only one team in each conference would receive a first-round bye, meaning the NFL would have six first-round playoff games instead of four. The league attempted to lengthen the regular season during the last CBA negotiations but ultimately backed down due to health concerns, pledging not to expand it without the approval of the NFL Players Association. The current CBA expires following the 2020 season, and the NFLPA advised players Tuesday to plan for a work stoppage of at least one year.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Saquon Barkley is no longer the only star running back in New York after the Jets landed Le'Veon Bell in free agency. The 2018 Offensive Rookie of the Year has no problem sharing The Big Apple, however, if it means the ex-Pittsburgh Steelers standout is suiting up in the NFL."We definitely both respect each other's games," Barkley said, according to Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com. "Obviously, he sat out last year and that's just not good for the league in general because he is such a tremendous player and you look forward to seeing a guy like that on Sundays."After being franchise tagged in back-to-back years, Bell opted to sit out the entire 2018 season. The contract dispute eventually ended when the Steelers allowed Bell to hit the open market, where the Jets won his signature by handing over the most guaranteed money ever to a running back.In Bell's absence, Barkley arguably took up the mantle as the league's most versatile back, producing over 2,000 yards from scrimmage in just his first season. Bell achieved the same feat in 2014, his sophomore year, rushing for 1,361 yards while catching 83 passes for 854 yards. The battle for New York supremacy in 2019 will likely be determined in large part by which game-breaking back can find the most success.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. When Khalil Mack finishes his career, he wants to be viewed as one of the most dominant players to have ever stepped onto an NFL field. The Chicago Bears star said Wednesday it's his goal to emulate the careers of his idols Lawrence Taylor and Derrick Thomas when asked about coach Ted Monachino's comments about Mack wanting to be the greatest ever."He asked me what I wanted to do, and what I wanted to be. I want to be the best. I want to be the best to play the game," Mack said, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "We're trying to work toward that.""There's so many greats. You've got LT, you've got Derrick Thomas, you've got special, special guys who have played this position. All you can do is chase," he continued.Mack is already on pace for a Hall of Fame career. Since he was taken fifth overall in the 2014 draft, the linebacker's 53 sacks are the sixth-most in the league, according to Pro Football Reference.Of the five players ahead of Mack in sacks, Von Miller is the closest to his 350 total tackles with 284 in the past five years, highlighting the four-time Pro Bowler's rare combination of elite run-defense skills and pass-rushing abilities. While the 28-year-old's goals are lofty, he's set to spend the rest of his prime as the focal point of Chicago's talented defense - which ranked No. 1 in scoring a year ago - after inking a six-year, $141-million deal in September 2018.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Peyton Manning dispelled speculation Wednesday that he was a candidate to join the New York Jets' front office."I never heard anything from the Jets," the retired quarterback told Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post. "Nobody ever contacted me. And I'm not sure I was qualified anyway."The Jets were rumored to be eyeing Manning upon commencing their search for a new general manager. New York still hasn't found a replacement for Mike Maccagnan, leaving head coach Adam Gase to serve as the team's interim GM.Manning and Gase have a relationship dating back to their days with the Denver Broncos when Gase was Manning's offensive coordinator. Manning often spoke highly of Gase, who's entering his first campaign as head coach of the Jets."I'm pulling for Adam," Manning said. "I think he can do a lot of good things for Sam Darnold. Adam helped me out a lot. I was a veteran quarterback, but I was kind of starting over again in some ways. In Denver, it was kind of my second chapter. I was playing in a new system and physically, I couldn't do certain things I used to. So I can kind of relate to what Sam is going through and learning a lot. Adam is a good teacher. He's a fundamentals guy, and I think (that) will serve Sam real well."Manning has stayed connected to the NFL since retiring, and hosts a film breakdown show during the season that airs on ESPN+. He hasn't ruled out eventually running a team, but he's in no rush to transition to the front office."I'm kind of busy selling insurance right now (as a spokesperson for Nationwide), and our band is about to start our second tour with (Brad) Paisley, so that's keeping me busy right now," he said.Manning retired after the 2015 season. We have a decent grasp on which NFL teams will be good or bad in 2019. However, we have to kick it up a notch and identify both the elite and dreadful. Here, we dive into which teams will finish the 2019 regular season with both the NFL's best and worst record.Odds to finish with the best recordTeamOddsPatriots6-1Rams7-1Saints7-1Chiefs9-1Colts10-1Chargers10-1Eaglers10-1Bears14-1Packers14-1Falcons20-1Browns20-1Cowboys20-1Vikings20-1Steelers20-1Seahawks25-1Texans33-1Titans33-1Ravens40-1Jaguars40-149ers40-1Panthers50-1Jets66-1Bills100-1Broncos100-1Lions125-1Raiders150-1Redskins150-1Cardinals250-1Bengals250-1Giants250-1Buccaneers250-1Dolphins500-1Strength of scheduleTeam performance isn't sticky on a year-to-year basis. However, using a team's strength of schedule based on the success of their opponents from last season can be a good indicator for which teams will thrive and which teams will falter during the upcoming campaign.Patriots (6-1)The Patriots are almost always overvalued by the betting public. Right now, New England owns the highest regular-season win total on the board at 11 games. Not only should coaching, talent, and experience propel the Patriots to another deep run, they'll also benefit from the league's second-easiest schedule. New England only plays five of its 16 games against playoff teams from a year ago and four against clubs who won 10-plus contests.Rams (7-1)The Rams tied with the Saints last season for the best record at 13-3. Their 2019 schedule features teams that combined for a .473 winning percentage, tying them with the Bengals, Jets, and Giants for the league's third-easiest slate. L.A. couldn't break through with a Super Bowl win last year, but the Rams could run the table during the regular season yet again this fall.Eagles (10-1)It was only two seasons ago that the Eagles finished in a four-way tie for the best record in the NFL at 13-3 before going on to win the Super Bowl. If Carson Wentz can stay healthy, Philadelphia has a realistic shot at pulling it off again, as the team faces a 2019 schedule featuring a collective .479 winning percentage.Teams to fadeChiefs (9-1)The Chiefs went 12-4 in 2018 and are pegged for another double-digit campaign. However, they have the NFL's fifth-toughest schedule, with seven contests against teams who won 10 or more games last year.Browns (20-1)The Browns are a popular pick in the futures market and Cleveland does have a legitimate shot at an AFC North crown this season. However, pump the brakes a bit on this public darling.Odds to finish with the worst recordTeam OddsDolphins6-1Cardinals8-1Bengals8-1Raiders8-1Buccaneers8-1Redskins8-1Giants8-1Bills10-1Broncos10-1Jets10-1Lions10-1Panthers12-1Ravens14-1Jaguars14-149ers14-1Texans20-1Titans20-1Seahawks25-1Falcons33-1Browns33-1Teams to considerDolphins (6-1)It's not going to be pretty in Miami this season. Not only do the Dolphins face seven playoff teams from a year ago, but they're also in a full-on rebuild. There's a reason they're 6-1 to finish with the league's worst record.Cardinals (8-1)Last year's winner in this department shook things up by hiring a head coach with no NFL experience and drafting a quarterback who'll start immediately as a rookie. The Cardinals will also be without the services of their best defensive player - Patrick Peterson - for the first six games of the season due to a suspension.Broncos (10-1)This is our favorite mid-tier pick of the field. The Broncos face the second-toughest schedule and their biggest move of the offseason was trading for the declining Joe Flacco.Alex Kolodziej is theScore's betting writer. The New York Jets have put in a request to interview New Orleans Saints director of pro scouting Terry Fontenot for their general manager position, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported.Fontenot has spent 16 seasons with the Saints and six in his current role. The Jets, reportedly, previously requested GM interviews with Philadelphia Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas, Chicago Bears assistant director of player personnel Champ Kelly, Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager George Paton, and Seattle Seahawks co-director of player personnel Scott Fitterer. The search began after New York fired general manager Mike Maccagnan on May 15 following four seasons with the team, and named head coach Adam Gase the interim GM.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Following a rocky relationship with Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown is excited for life with his new quarterback.Brown, who was traded to the Oakland Raiders in March, spoke highly of Derek Carr and claimed their on-field connection is beginning to hit its stride."I think it's really growing," Brown said, according to ESPN's Paul Gutierrez. "Making a lot of deposits so we have a lot in the bank. Extremely grateful to be out here, to put the work in action. Show these guys what I'm about, on and off the field. It's exciting to build that correlation and see it come to fruition right here."The veteran wideout also commented on former Cincinnati Bengals linebacker and current teammate Vontaze Burfict, who knocked Brown out of a playoff game in 2016 with a hit to the head.Despite the incident, Brown insisted he's prioritizing his desire to win over holding a grudge."It's tremendously important to have a relationship off the field because playing football, you get mentally tired," he said. "You get frustrated. You always want to have that respect for a guy to know where he's coming from, know what he stands for, and know what's important to him so you guys can be on the same page. And do what you desire to do - win."Camaraderie is key. Any team needs camaraderie to win, to know the guys and have their back. That's why we're here today, to build camaraderie, show the guys what I'm about and continue to build it."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The Denver Broncos and cornerback Chris Harris Jr. reached an agreement on a one-year contract adjustment for 2019, the team announced on Tuesday.Harris will earn $12.05 million with his new deal, a raise from the $8.9 million he was scheduled to make, sources told 9 News' Mike Klis.A breakthrough in negotiations came when Harris was offered a $650,000 bonus for reporting to organized team activities and another $600,000 bonus for attending training camp, Klis reports. The veteran defender is still entering the final year of his contract and previously told the Broncos to either give him a new one or trade him. After extensive talks with Harris' agent, general manager John Elway opted to pay his top cornerback.Harris, a four-time Pro Bowler, notched 49 tackles and three interceptions in 12 games last year. It appears the Los Angeles Rams are bringing Todd Gurley along slowly, as head coach Sean McVay said the running back has yet to participate in on-field team drills during organized team activities.Despite his limitations on the field, McVay noted that Gurley has been a consistent participant in the team's offseason program, according to NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano."We've got him on a great plan," the head coach said Tuesday.Gurley's role in Los Angeles' offense dwindled during the playoffs as he dealt with arthritis in his knee. McVay, however, has been adamant that the star ball-carrier's workload won't be limited to start the 2019 season. The 24-year-old averaged 58 snaps per game during the regular season but his usage dropped to 39 per contest in the playoffs as he split duties with C.J. Anderson. He finished the campaign with 1,251 rushing yards, 580 receiving yards, and 21 touchdowns.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Patrick Mahomes went from a 55-1 long shot to win MVP last June to the odds-on favorite midway through December. Not many expected the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback to become the league's next star, but in hindsight, a high-upside gunslinger playing in an Andy Reid offense was a missed opportunity at snagging value. We're not trying to find the next Mahomes for this year's MVP, as most of the previous award winners were household names. However, finding players whose odds are being undershot is key. Here are the MVP prices for the upcoming season:PlayerOddsPatrick Mahomes6-1Andrew Luck9-1Drew Brees10-1Tom Brady10-1Aaron Rodgers12-1Baker Mayfield15-1Carson Wentz16-1Philip Rivers17-1Russell Wilson18-1Matt Ryan26-1Ben Roethlisberger32-1Jared Goff32-1Christian McCaffrey34-1Deshaun Watson34-1Ezekiel Elliott34-1Saquon Barkley34-1Alvin Kamara40-1Cam Newton40-1Jimmy Garoppolo40-1Kirk Cousins40-1Todd Gurley40-1Dak Prescott50-1Le'Veon Bell50-1Matthew Stafford50-1Lamar Jackson65-1Melvin Gordon65-1Aaron Donald80-1David Johnson80-1Derrick Henry80-1Jameis Winston80-1Marcus Mariota80-1Nick Foles80-1Sam Darnold80-1Notes- Only three players have won back-to-back MVPs since 1975. Mahomes shouldn't automatically be ruled out based on this, but the media does have a year-by-year fancy for new flavor.- Quarterbacks have dominated the award. Each of the last six MVPs and 11 of the past 12 have been signal-callers.- The media takes into account team performance. Since 2000, every MVP winner has been on a team that won double-digit games during the regular season. The average win total for those teams is 12.6.Players to avoidFactoring in team success and/or pricing, here are some players that you might want to cross off your list.Drew Brees (10-1)Brees narrowly missed out on his first MVP last season to Mahomes. His window to win the award - which included a five-year stretch from 2011-15 in which he posted at least 4,900 yards and 32 touchdowns in each season - has closed. As the Saints become more balanced offensively, Brees' passing yards have declined significantly in each of the previous two years.Tom Brady (10-1)Bet against Brady at your own peril. You can chalk the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer up for another year with 4,000-some passing yards and his fair share of touchdowns. However, he's not as attractive as he was in years past. Our own fantasy football expert Justin Boone discussed why you should be bearish about buying Brady in 2019.Russell Wilson (18-1)Can the Seattle Seahawks win enough games for Wilson to get the media's attention? There aren't many that can do more with less, but Wilson doesn't have the supporting cast this season to pull it off.Christian McCaffrey (34-1)McCaffrey took on a bigger load last season, becoming the Carolina Panthers' lead back after splitting time as a rookie. He'll stuff the stat sheet, but it's probably wise to avoid most, if not all, running backs. The fair price here is 50-1 or longer.Jimmy Garoppolo (40-1)The San Francisco 49ers should be improved and Garoppolo will be the centerpiece of a potential surge. However, the Niners winning enough games is a tall enough task as is. That and the fact that Garoppolo is a conservative signal-caller makes him less intriguing than he appears at 40-1. Comeback Player of the Year? Sure. MVP? No chance.Players to considerBaker Mayfield (15-1)The Cleveland Browns are the league's newest darling, but we assure you this has nothing to do with jumping on the bandwagon. Mayfield excelled in his first season at the NFL level and has one of the top receiving corps in the league this year after the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. The Browns also hired offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the league's third-ranked offense last season despite flip-flopping between Jameis Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Ten-plus wins might be a stretch, but the Browns will warrant enough attention to get Mayfield in the mix.Matt Ryan (26-1)The Atlanta Falcons made a brilliant move by naming Dirk Koetter as their new offensive coordinator. Expect him to give Matt Ryan plenty of chances to pad his stats, as the quarterback's three highest passing attempt totals in his career came during Koetter's previous stint in Atlanta from 2012-14.Jared Goff (32-1)This is solid value on a player in a quarterback-friendly system and on a team that should win plenty. Goff had his coming-out party in 2018 after a trying rookie season, racking up 4,688 yards and 32 touchdowns for the Super Bowl runner-ups.Alex Kolodziej is theScore's betting writer. The Oakland Raiders are prepared for the character concerns accompanying four-time Pro Bowl guard Richie Incognito to the Bay Area."You can't have all Boy Scouts," general manager Mike Mayock told reporters Tuesday upon signing the 35-year-old lineman, according to Vic Tafur of The Athletic. After sitting out the 2018 season, Incognito finalized his return to the NFL by inking a one-year deal with the Raiders.Incognito has a troubling history off the field, including a pair of incidents last year that resulted in one arrest and one involuntary psychiatric evaluation. The NFL could discipline Incognito now that he's back in the league."We've done a one-year 'prove-it' deal with him," Mayock said. "'Prove it' means both on and off the field. There's some expectations he's got to meet in both areas. He turns 36 in July. We think he's gonna be a good football player and allow himself to compete for the left guard job. And just as importantly, he's got to prove it off the field."Along with last year's incidents, Incognito was a central figure in the Jonathan Martin bullying scandal while the two were teammates with the Miami Dolphins in 2012 and 2013. Incognito was also accused of directing racial slurs at Yannick Ngakoue of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2017-18 postseason.Mayock said Incognito was candid about the type of infrastructure he'd require if the Raiders brought him aboard."We had a one-on-one meeting with the door closed, where I asked him specifically what he would need, not only to be a good football player but to be a really good human being," Mayock said. "We went through a lot more of that than we did the football."Incognito was a Pro Bowler in 2012 with the Dolphins and from 2015-17 with the Buffalo Bills. He's expected to compete with Denzelle Good for the Raiders' starting left guard position.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Longtime Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis is headed to Arizona State as a special adviser on Herm Edwards' staff, the school announced Tuesday.Lewis spent 16 seasons in Cincinnati before he was fired at the end of the 2018 campaign. His duties will include contributing to game strategy by studying film of opponents and speaking at various events, according to ESPN's Matt Barrie."I've known Herman for almost 30 years and the opportunity to come and assist him and his coaches win football games is very exciting and appealing," Lewis said in the team's announcement.Edwards and Lewis were both NFL head coaches for most of the 2000s. Edwards is entering his second season with the Sun Devils. He went 7-6 last year in his inaugural season as a college head coach."I envision just being another set of eyes, another set of ears, and doing anything I can to help the coaches," Lewis said. "I was really impressed with the staff and what they accomplished after they hit the ground running last season. ASU is a great university and is known for having an outstanding athletic program that has always been able to attract top athletes from around the country and I look forward to doing all I can to help the program."Lewis hasn't coached at the NCAA level since 1991 when he was a linebackers coach at Pitt. The 60-year-old was the NFL Coach of the Year in 2009. He led the Bengals to seven playoff appearances in 16 years, though his 0-7 postseason record often overshadowed his regular-season accomplishments."Marvin Lewis is one of the most respected minds in our game," Edwards said. "Whether as the winningest coach in the franchise history of the Cincinnati Bengals or the architect of one the greatest defenses in NFL history, the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, Marvin has succeeded everywhere he has been and he has done it the right way. His passion for teaching will be an incredible benefit not only for our coaches but also for the young men we are responsible for as students and athletes."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Four-time Pro Bowl guard Richie Incognito finalized his return to the NFL by signing a contract with the Oakland Raiders, the team announced .Incognito, who hasn't played in the NFL since the 2017 campaign, announced his intention to retire last spring but changed his mind days later. He was eventually released by the Buffalo Bills amid a contract dispute and wasn't picked up by another team at any point during the season.Incognito, 35, received three straight Pro Bowl nods with the Bills from 2015-17 and earned another selection in 2012 as a member of the Miami Dolphins.Though he's been an asset on the field for much of his career, Incognito possesses plenty of baggage off of it. He was at the center of the Dolphins' bullying scandal involving Jonathan Martin in 2013, was accused of hurling racial slurs at Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue in the 2017-18 playoffs, and was arrested last August after threatening to shoot employees at a funeral home following the death of his father. He was also forced to undergo a psychiatric evaluation last May after behaving erratically at a Florida gym.A former third-round pick of the St. Louis Rams, Incognito broke into the league in 2005. He figures to compete for a starting spot on the Raiders' offensive line.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Only five teams are eligible to be featured on this season of "Hard Knocks," HBO's inside look at an NFL training camp.Teams are exempt from being chosen for the television show if they are entering their first year with a new head coach, have made the playoffs in the past two seasons, or have been featured in the series in the past 10 years. That criteria pared the field down from 32 to five. Here's our ranking of the remaining candidates.5. Detroit LionsIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyIt's been more than 10,000 days since the Lions won a playoff game, so they certainly meet the third criterion for "Hard Knocks."Matt Patricia's had a rough go in his first calendar year at the helm in Detroit and not much more is expected from his club in 2019. The Lions currently have 100-1 odds to make the Super Bowl. The only player who seems to be a natural fit for cable television is Damon "Snacks" Harrison. The always-entertaining defensive tackle could carry the show on his own, as he may have to do with the team's defense in 2019.4. San Francisco 49ersIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyWho wouldn't want to stare into Jimmy Garoppolo's eyes for an hour? The 49ers quarterback - who's been known to date an adult-film actress from time to time - and his movie-star looks would be a perfect fit for "Hard Knocks." He's recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last September, so who knows how much on-field work we'll see, but that should mean more helmetless Jimmy GQ.Though the 49ers are short on mainstream talents, Richard Sherman and No. 2 overall draft pick Nick Bosa could be capable supporting actors in the Garoppolo show. It's also Year 3 of the John Lynch-Kyle Shanahan marriage and the Niners are feeling the pressure to produce results. Pressure makes diamonds and television ratings, as they say.3. Washington RedskinsIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyThe Redskins' inclusion on "Hard Knocks" would give football fans a true glimpse of a quarterback battle in camp.Case Keenum, Colt McCoy, and first-round pick Dwayne Haskins will all vie to be Washington's starter. The winner will be determined through training camp and the preseason. The show would likely also provide a look at Alex Smith's progress in recovering from a serious leg fracture that's jeopardizing his career. Finally, the competition at running back includes future Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson, Derrius Guice returning from a season-ending knee injury, and 2019 draft pick Bryce Love. It all seems like the makings of compelling TV.2. New York GiantsJoe Robbins / Getty Images Sport / GettyHow is Eli Manning adjusting to life with his eventual successor looking over his shoulder? Put the Giants on "Hard Knocks" and let the world see. Will Manning play nice with Daniel Jones? The veteran quarterback expected the Giants to select a quarterback in this year's draft, and having a rookie backup is nothing new to him (Davis Webb in 2017, Kyle Lauletta in 2018). But when the Giants shockingly used the sixth pick in April's draft on Jones, they anointed him their quarterback of the future. Then there's Dave Gettleman. After trading away Odell Beckham Jr. and allowing Landon Collins to leave via free agency, the general manager insisted it's all part of his master plan. Surely, Giants fans would appreciate a glimpse of that plan in action.1. Oakland RaidersJustin K. Aller / Getty Images Sport / GettyJon Gruden, Mike Mayock, and Antonio Brown? This team was made for a miniseries. The Raiders are the obvious choice for this season's "Hard Knocks."This selection would provide fans with five hours of footage we otherwise wouldn't have of the ever-quotable Gruden, the team's TV personality-turned-GM in Mayock, and the Raiders' attempts at integrating Brown. The team's also preparing for a move to Las Vegas in 2020.Aside from Brown, the Raiders will feature plenty of new faces, including three first-round draft picks (Josh Jacobs, Clelin Ferrell, and Johnathan Abram), volatile offensive lineman Richie Incognito, and a man considered the dirtiest player in the game, Vontaze Burfict.Burfict and Brown had plenty of head-to-head meetings as members of the AFC North, and Burfict delivered hits to Brown's helmet not once, but twice. The pair have said they've smoothed things over, but "Hard Knocks" would give fans a chance to judge for themselves.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. A federal appeals court upheld a district court's ruling that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers aren't entitled to damages from BP for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, according to The Associated Press. The Buccaneers had sought $19.5 million in damages from BP, arguing the spill caused a dip in team revenues. The court determined the team's revenues during the period of the spill, from May-June 2010, weren't significantly lower than the figures during the same span from a year later. The Buccaneers needed to show that their revenues rebounded by at least 10 percent in 2011 to qualify for damages.Raymond James Stadium, home of the Buccaneers, is located roughly 360 miles from the site of the oil spill.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The New Orleans Saints' high-flying offense, headlined by stars Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas, wasn't hurting for options prior to the arrival of veteran tight end Jared Cook in free agency. The Saints haven't heavily utilized a receiving tight end since trading away Jimmy Graham in 2015. But now Drew Brees believes the presence of another Pro Bowler who can consistently win one-on-one matchups will improve New Orleans' offense."I'd read a lot of good things about him before he got here, but he's certainly impressed us these first couple of days," Brees said, according to Nathan Brown of The New Orleans Advocate. "He's got a great feel for the game, and I think he's going to fit very well in our offense."He's got great length, so he's got a big catch radius. You feel confident with those 50-50 balls. You feel like there's a lot of places where you can throw it where he can get it and the other guy can't. Anytime you have a target like that, you feel like that's a good matchup."Graham was one of the league's most dynamic threats during his five years in New Orleans, racking up 4,752 receiving yards and 51 touchdowns, including two seasons with over 1,200 yards.Coby Fleener, who was signed in 2016 as a long-term replacement for Graham, produced 926 yards and just five touchdowns in two seasons before New Orleans released him. Benjamin Watson spent 2013-15 and 2018 with the Saints and recorded 825 yards immediately following Graham's exit, but the veteran lacked the speed to threaten defenses downfield.Cook joined the Saints on a two-year deal knowing the heights tight ends can reach in Sean Payton's scheme, and he's ready to help take some of the offensive workload off Kamara and Thomas' shoulders."This has always been a tight end-friendly offense, and I thought it would be a great place for me to come and extend my career and come and shine," Cook said. "They were with Mike and Alvin a pretty potent one-two combo last year, and I thought I could come in and help Mike. And at the same time him help me and relieve some pressure off each other and make this a high-powered offense once again this year."The 32-year-old averaged 13.2 yards per catch - sixth-best among tight ends - while playing for the Oakland Raiders in 2018. The Saints will be hoping his speed can add an extra dimension to the third-ranked scoring offense from a season ago.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The NFL will likely review the Las Vegas incident involving Ezekiel Elliott that resulted in the Dallas Cowboys running back briefly being handcuffed, a pair of league sources told Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson. The altercation took place on May 18. A verbal argument at a music festival with a woman identified as his girlfriend led to Elliott getting in a security guard's face and pushing him into a metal gate. Elliott was not arrested or charged. In 2017, the NFL suspended Elliott for six games after investigating an incident involving his ex-girlfriend. The league is reportedly expected to examine the Las Vegas event to determine whether Elliott violated the terms of the previous suspension guidelines commissioner Roger Goodell laid out.Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said last week he doesn't think the incident will have "any consequences for us."Elliott led the league in rushing last season for the second time in his three-year career.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Wide receiver Randall Cobb was apparently quite eager to play for the Dallas Cowboys and even went so far as to tell Dak Prescott "come get me (in free agency)" on the eve of Super Bowl LIII."At the NFL Honors, we were getting ready to take our seat and he said that," Prescott told team writer David Helman. "It's interesting now, looking back."Cobb spent eight seasons with the Green Bay Packers before signing a one-year deal to play for the Cowboys. The 28-year-old is coming off an injury-plagued campaign in which he managed just 383 yards and two touchdowns."I actually didn't think that it would be an option going into free agency until I saw (Cole) Beasley leave," Cobb said. "Then I knew that it was a real possibility and that it could happen. And we were able to get something done."Injuries have slowed Cobb in recent years, but he was one of the top slot receivers in the league earlier in his career. The Kentucky product's production peaked in 2014 when he totaled 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns through the air.The Cowboys signed Cobb with the belief he'll improve their depth behind Amari Cooper and add another dimension to the offense."I mean, honestly, put him in the backfield, put him outside, put him inside, ask him to block, ask him to take a jet sweep," Prescott said. "I mean, he's got film doing all those things and doing all those things really well. I think if we're not utilizing all of his athleticism and his versatility, then we're cheating him as a player and we're not getting everything we want as an offense."The Cowboys won the NFC East last year with a record of 10-6 but eventually fell in the divisional round of the playoffs to the Los Angeles Rams.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. It appears Benjamin Watson won't be on the field to begin the 2019 season.Watson, who came out of retirement and signed with the New England Patriots on May 10, wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday that he'll be suspended for the first four games of the 2019 campaign, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.Set to end his NFL career following the 2018 campaign, the veteran tight end underwent a series of medical tests and was prescribed a "Bio Identical Testosterone Cypionate" to help heal his body, not knowing at the time he would return to the league. The medicine violates the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances, and it was flagged when Watson completed a random drug test."At that point I knew that my decision to return to play would include a four-game suspension and I immediately discussed this new development with the (interested NFL) clubs," he said in the post.Watson added that he was in constant communication with the Patriots, and thanked the team for allowing him to play one final year despite the failed test. The 38-year-old previously spent six seasons with New England after the Patriots used a first-round pick to draft him in 2004.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was caught off guard when he arrived for organized team activities. There was no question Jackson would be the man going forward following the trade of Joe Flacco at the start of free agency, but no one told him he wouldn't be operating in the same system as he did in 2018."Coming in, I didn't know we would have a totally different offense," Jackson admitted Thursday."When I got here, coach was like, 'Yeah, we have a totally new system. The Green Bay Packers announced Sunday that franchise legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bart Starr died earlier in the day at the age of 85. His health had been failing since he suffered a stroke in 2014."We are saddened to note the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bart Starr," read a message from the former quarterback's family."He battled with courage and determination to transcend the serious stroke he suffered in September 2014, but his most recent illness was too much to overcome."Starr won five NFL championships with the Packers, including Super Bowls I and II, which both saw him named MVP. He played for Green Bay from 1956 to 1971 and coached the team from 1975 to 1983. His last appearance at Lambeau Field came the night Favre's number was retired in November 2015."While he may always be best known for his success as the Packers quarterback for 16 years, his true legacy will always be the respectful manner in which he treated every person he met, his humble demeanor, and his generous spirit," Starr's family added in its statement."He had hoped to make one last trip to Green Bay to watch the Packers this fall, but he shall forever be there in spirit."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Joey Bosa is ready to put a difficult 2018 behind him.The Los Angeles Chargers defensive end feels fully healthy heading into the upcoming season after battling a foot injury last year, and his coaches are taking notice during organized team activities."(Bosa) looks awesome," defensive coordinator Gus Bradley told the team's website. "He feels really good. So, to get him back on the field - just that brotherhood part where the guys are together again - I think that's important. You can always count on him. It's great to see him. He looks to be in great shape."Despite missing the first 11 games of the 2018 campaign, Bosa still managed 5.5 sacks and one fumble recovery in seven contests. With the injury now behind him, the former No. 3 overall pick is ready to join the NFL's elite defenders."I'm as fast and strong as I've ever been in my life," Bosa said. "It's just about some little things like my hands and stuff, but as a defensive lineman, you're going to deal with that stuff. I just have to take care of myself in that sense, tape up and keep doing what I'm doing."A star from the moment he stepped on the field, Bosa has developed into one of the NFL's premier edge rushers. The 23-year-old has accumulated 28.5 sacks and forced five fumbles over his first three seasons.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
