Amid trade speculation and uncertainty over his NFL future, Gerald McCoy didn't exactly provide clarity regarding his absence from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason.McCoy has skipped various voluntary offseason programs, leading to speculation that he has played his final snap with the Bucs. The veteran defensive tackle told Mike Cairns of Spectrum Sports that he'll "be playing football somewhere," but when asked if it would be in Tampa Bay, he responded "I don't know, we'll see."McCoy's status with the Buccaneers has been in flux ever since Tampa ushered in a 3-4 defense with the arrival of its new coaching staff, while the 31-year-old has spent the bulk of his career in 4-3 sets.Head coach Bruce Arians previously questioned McCoy's recent effectiveness, and general manager Jason Licht said in April that there hadn't been any developments with the six-time Pro Bowler.McCoy totaled 28 tackles with six sacks and a team-high 21 quarterback hits in 2018. He carries a $13-million cap hit into the 2019 season, but none of that money is guaranteed.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

After listening to several opinions regarding the fractured vertebra he suffered in a single-vehicle car crash on May 2, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is proceeding with a non-surgical remedy, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.Head coach Bruce Arians said Friday the team is holding out hope Pierre-Paul won't have to miss the entire 2019 season."We've got our fingers crossed and praying for him," Arians said, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. "It's very unfortunate. And all we can do is pray and hope for the best and hope it's one of those five- or six-month things and go from there."Three independent doctors told Pierre-Paul the injury will heal on its own and the recovery timeline is five-to-six months, if not sooner, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.Pierre-Paul sustained the neck injury when he lost control of his vehicle and it slammed into a concrete barrier. The Florida Highway Patrol report says Pierre-Paul initially reported his condition as "apparently normal." He was released from hospital in less than 24 hours.Upon learning of the neck fracture, it was believed Pierre-Paul would have to miss the 2019 season. The 30-year-old veteran led the team with 12.5 sacks in 2018. His absence is a substantial blow to a defense that has few established pass-rushers aside from interior defender Gerald McCoy, whom the team is rumored to be potentially parting ways with.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Arcega-Whiteside100-1TE Jace Sternberger100-1QB Jarrett Stidham100-1What history tells us There isn't a specific pattern that points to an early edge. The Offensive Rookie of the Year has been pretty evenly distributed over the last decade, with four running backs, four quarterbacks, and two wide receivers taking home the award.Plenty of long shots (Odell Beckham Jr. at 25-1 and Dak Prescott at 500-1) and favorites (most notably, Saquon Barkley at 2-1) have won recently. Plug in a handful of mid-tier players between 4-1 and 8-1 odds (Cam Newton, Robert Griffin III, Sam Bradford, and Eddie Lacy), and projecting the award has become a crapshoot.Only one tight end has nabbed the honors, so Hockenson, Fant, and Smith don't seem like great options. But buyer beware if you're planning to fade the position entirely: The game, it's a changin'.Hockenson, specifically, might be the closest young talent to the next Rob Gronkowski, and he's expected to be a receiving-first tight end. The Iowa standout could put up huge numbers and see a high target volume in the Detroit Lions' offense. So don't be so quick to look past all tight ends.Bets to considerKyler Murray (2-1)Even in such a deep field, Murray at this price should be appealing. Whether you believe he'll become the savior for a struggling Arizona Cardinals franchise doesn't matter. He's automatically ahead of his competition because Murray will start immediately under center. If he stays healthy, the 2019 first overall pick will get a full season to pad his stats both through the air and on the ground, and throwing often while playing from behind will increase his production, too. Murray is a versatile quarterback who's tailor-made to succeed in new head coach Kliff Kingsbury's system.Oh, and the media hype won't hurt, either.Marquise Brown (25-1)From one Brown to another, the Baltimore Ravens moved on from veteran deep threat John Brown in the offseason and gave quarterback Lamar Jackson a new, younger vertical weapon after drafting "Hollywood" Brown. Jackson's deep throwing wasn't great during his seven starts as a rookie, but he was given plenty of play-action opportunities.Baltimore's offense is run heavy, but Brown could still rack up huge plays while facing limited competition at wide receiver.Justice Hill (50-1)Yes, it's a partial cop-out highlighting two Ravens rookies. But there isn't a better NFL system for the former Oklahoma State standout, especially while playing alongside Jackson on the read option."Hill loves to cut up the backside and make the contain man miss, and his electric quickness is more than most unblocked defenders can handle when they’re also worried about a quarterback keep on the read option," said The Draft Network's Benjamin Solak, who spoke to theScore on Friday. "Hill will have plenty of concepts in which defenders are frozen by the threat of Lamar Jackson’s run, which will open up wider lanes, make his decisions easy, and maximize his space ability."Diontae Johnson (100-1)Johnson is the most enticing long shot on the board. The unheralded receiver out of Toledo could earn immediate playing time after the Pittsburgh Steelers shipped out Antonio Brown, paving the way for another pass-catcher to get more targets.Johnson caught the attention of Pro Football Focus, which ranked him as a Top 10 Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate.Alex Kolodziej is theScore's betting writer. The Minnesota Vikings' contract extension talks with tight end Kyle Rudolph broke down on Friday, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Rudolph could now be traded, and there's interest around the league, Rapoport adds. The Vikings selected tight end Irv Smith Jr. 50th overall in the 2019 draft. That may make Rudolph expendable, as the two-time Pro Bowler is entering the final year of his contract while carrying a $7.5 million cap hit.Minnesota is still tight against the salary cap, and the team was reportedly open to trading its expensive veteran players during April's draft.Rudolph finished with 64 receptions for 634 yards during the 2018 season. With OTAs quickly approaching, the Philadelphia Eagles still aren't certain of the status of Carson Wentz and his injured back.Speaking to reporters Friday, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said he's encouraged by Wentz's progress, but wouldn't disclose whether his quarterback will be cleared for a full return on May 21, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.Wentz stated in April that he expects to be fully recovered from his stress fracture in time for organized activities, but didn't want to rush the process. The fourth-year passer missed the final three games of the 2018 regular season and the Eagles' two playoff contests after being shut down.Wentz's last two seasons have been derailed by injuries, as an ACL tear prematurely ended his 2017 campaign. Odell Beckham Jr. was traded to the Cleveland Browns nearly two months ago, but aftershocks can still be felt around the league.Washington Redskins safety Landon Collins recently opened up about his former teammate, claiming the New York Giants viewed Beckham's personality as an issue."Was I shocked with Odell? No, honestly, not," Collins told Ryan Dunleavy of NJ.com. "(The Giants) felt like he was a problem the whole time. Ever since Odell stepped into the league with them, they felt like he was a problem, I felt like from the outside."Collins insisted that although ownership may have clashed with Beckham, his Giants teammates did not."We loved him," he said. "Odell is my brother. He is not that kind of guy, or what people think he is about or what the organization did. I don't know why."Beckham has alluded to a strained relationship with the Giants on multiple occasions this offseason. After general manager Dave Gettleman claimed in April that New York had freed itself from culture problems, the wideout tweeted: "I'm cancer to a place that's OK (with) losing."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold may not have enjoyed much individual or team success in his rookie campaign, but he's excited about the direction of the offense under new head coach Adam Gase."We have the potential to make a huge step," Darnold said on ESPN's "The Michael Kay Show," according to Newsday's Al Iannazzone. "We have a ton of really good pieces. We had a lot of the same guys who made a really big impact for us last year. We’re ready to do bigger and better things this year. I’m just really, really pumped and really excited for what’s to come."The offense is fun and unique. We’re going to do a lot of cool stuff and a lot of stuff that Jets fans haven’t seen in a while. I’m really pumped about that. I know we’re going to score points and I know our defense is going to do their job with (defensive coordinator) Gregg (Williams) over there controlling everything."The 4-12 Jets struggled offensively last season, ranking 29th in yards per game (299.2) and 23rd in points scored per contest (20.8).Gase was brought in to boost the offense and expedite the development of the franchise's young starter. Before serving as Miami Dolphins head coach, Gase was the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator when Peyton Manning threw a record-setting 55 passing touchdowns in 2013.Darnold threw for 2865 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions in his rookie season. He'll hope to improve significantly in 2019 and will have some new weapons to work with, most notably, Le'Veon Bell, Ty Montgomery, and Jamison Crowder.Much has been made of Bell's absence at voluntary workouts, but Darnold doesn't think it should concern Jets fans."He’s got his process and what he’s been doing the last few years," Darnold said. "It’s been working for him. We’ve been talking, though. I know he’s studying the playbook as much as he can. I know he’s been training a ton, posting all over his Instagram. It’s been really fun to be able watch that and how hard he’s working. The football aspect in terms of learning the offense, he’s doing a good job of that so far."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Seattle Seahawks released longtime receiver Doug Baldwin and safety Kam Chancellor on Thursday with failed physical designations, the team announced. Both players have been dealing with career-threatening ailments. Chancellor sustained a neck injury that shelved him for the entire 2018 season. Baldwin has undergone numerous surgeries this offseason for multiple maladies and has been considering retirement. The move to cut ties with two franchise stalwarts wasn't made lightly, according to general manager John Schneider."The Seahawks have made the difficult decision to terminate/failed physical Doug Baldwin and Kam Chancellor. These are two of the most iconic players in franchise history and both were instrumental in establishing our championship culture, great examples of competitiveness and leadership on the field and in the community," Schneider said in a statement."These legendary players will always be a part of our Seahawks family."Both Baldwin and Chancellor have only played for the Seahawks during their NFL careers.Chancellor, a 2010 fifth-round pick, became a starter in 2011 and evolved into the Legion of Boom's tone-setting strong safety. He reached four Pro Bowls and totaled 606 tackles, 12 interceptions, and nine forced fumbles with the Seahawks.Baldwin joined the team as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and grew to become one of the franchise's most reliable targets. His best season came in 2015 when he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time and added 14 touchdowns. He reached two Pro Bowls and now wraps up his Seahawks career ranking third on the franchise's career receiving list with 6,563 yards and second in career touchdown catches (49), behind only Steve Largent. They each helped the Seahawks win the first Super Bowl title in franchise history in 2013, before returning to the championship game in 2014.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Telvin Smith announced on Thursday that he will not play football in 2019."At this time I must take time away from this game and get my world in order," Smith said on his Instagram account. "I must give this time back to myself, my family, and my health."Smith doesn't appear to be retiring from the NFL, however, and he did his part to dispel trade talk, stating: "The day I do decide to call it quits it will be right here in Duval."The 28-year-old was the subject of trade speculation earlier this offseason after not attending the Jaguars' conditioning workouts prior to the draft. His absence drew the ire of top executive Tom Coughlin even though the activities were optional. The Jaguars addressed Smith's announcement in a release on Thursday."We will not have a comment about Telvin Smith's statement at this time. We need to have a conversation with Telvin to understand the situation and the circumstances," read the release. "If there is a way we can support him we need to understand that."General manager Dave Caldwell responded vaguely to questions about Smith's future with his club in April but claimed he had yet to receive any calls from teams looking to acquire the linebacker.Smith signed a four-year, $45-million extension with the Jaguars in October 2017. Veteran tight end Benjamin Watson intends to return for his 16th NFL season after saying in December he was retiring, and he is visiting the New England Patriots on Thursday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 38-year-old is also interested in the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and San Francisco 49ers.Watson was the Patriots' first-round pick in the 2004 draft and spent six seasons in New England, during which he caught 167 passes for 2,102 yards and 20 touchdowns. The Patriots have a huge hole at tight end left by the retirement of Rob Gronkowski; the team had a failed pursuit of Jared Cook - who instead signed with the New Orleans Saints - and also opted not to select a tight end in this year's draft. The Chiefs have an elite starter in Travis Kelce, but their depth requires bolstering after losing Demetrius Harris to the Cleveland Browns, while the Bills need a proven producer to pair with draftee Dawson Knox and journeyman Tyler Kroft, and the 49ers lack a pass-catching option behind breakout star George Kittle.Watson spent the 2018 campaign with the Saints and recorded 400 yards and two scores on 35 catches.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Contract negotiations have begun between the Dallas Cowboys and offensive stars Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper, and the team also wants to extend Ezekiel Elliott.Executive vice president Stephen Jones spoke to ESPN's Todd Archer on Wednesday and said all three playmakers have earned the right to seek a max contract. However, that would hinder the team's ability to keep all its stars in the future and fill out the rest of the roster. The Cowboys signed pass-rusher DeMarcus Lawrence to a five-year, $105-million extension in April."As I told DeMarcus Lawrence, and I'll tell all three of these guys: I'd love for you to max out and give you exactly what you want, because y'all have worked hard and you deserve to have a big contract. But if we want to put together the type of team we want to have with the Cowboys ..." Jones said."That's not their job. It's not their job to manage the cap; I understand that. But it is my job and (owner Jerry Jones') job, so they will understand why we're negotiating hard to make the very best deal we can. Because the money, if we can talk them into not maxing out - doing well, but not maxed - then that allows us to have other good football players around them."Although the Cowboys intend to offer Elliott an extension, the franchise is focusing its immediate attention on Cooper and Prescott, who are entering the final year of their current contracts."Zeke, as we all know, he's such an important player to this organization. He's a guy that we want to have long term," Jones said. Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane confirmed his interest Wednesday in signing Ezekiel Ansah and took exception to a report claiming the Seattle Seahawks are the top candidates to get him."We're still in talks with him and his agent," Beane said during a radio appearance on 1270 The Fan, according to ESPN's Mike Rodak. "Everything has been very good. For Sean McVay, having a seemingly photographic memory isn't always a blessing.Looking back, the Los Angeles Rams head coach says he over-prepared for Super Bowl LIII against the New England Patriots by diving too deep into his opponent's film history during the two-week lull after the conference title games."In the back of my mind, I operated knowing I had another week," McVay said, according to Andy Benoit of Sports Illustrated. "That urgency to completely finalize the game plan wasn't quite there, and that led to me watching so much film that you can almost water down your thought process."McVay added that working through New England's entire campaign - along with the Patriots' two most recent Super Bowl appearances - created an overload of information that clouded his view of the February matchup."You have so much time that you can over-prepare and get away from some of the things that helped you get there," McVay said."I watched every game from New England's season. You see stuff that worked in, say, Week 3, but you forget about the amount of stuff that's taken place since Week 3. You can watch so much film that you lose perspective. You have 18 games of film you can pore over. And then I even watched the Philly and Atlanta Super Bowls closely."Aside from learning the dangers of overanalyzing, McVay said his other main takeaway from the Rams' 13-3 defeat in the Super Bowl was to have a greater appreciation for the time on football's biggest stage."I think there's a lot to be said for the journey, and I appreciated what the season had entailed," McVay said. "But I could have appreciated the week and entirety of the event more. I kept myself kind of isolated because I didn't want any distraction."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Denver Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders isn't sure if he'll be ready for the beginning of training camp as he continues to rehab his injured Achilles."We'll see," the two-time Pro Bowler said Tuesday, according to Aric DiLalla of DenverBroncos.com. "You know how the trainers are. We're not going to put a date on anything. We're just going to take it one day at a time. Hopefully I'm back out there by then, but if I'm not, I'm not going to rush it. I'm going to take my time and make sure I'm 100 percent by the time I get on the field."Sanders noted he's neither ahead nor behind schedule in his recovery process. The 32-year-old tore his Achilles in practice Dec. 5, leaving the Broncos without their top receiver for the final quarter of the season. In 12 games last year, the veteran notched 71 receptions for 868 yards and four touchdowns. Sanders eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in three straight seasons from 2014-16.Sanders is entering the final year of his contract with the Broncos. He's due a base salary of $10.15 million in 2019, according to OverTheCap.Training camp commences in mid-July.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul suffered a fractured neck in a car accident last week that could prevent him from playing in 2019, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Pierre-Paul is visiting specialists this week to see if it's possible for him to play in the upcoming season, though it's believed that he will likely need surgery, Schefter added, citing a source. A procedure would come with a five-to-six-month recovery timetable, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports. It was previously unknown if the 30-year-old was injured in the single-car accident; he was admitted to hospital but subsequently released.JPP wasn't cited for the accident, according to the Buccaneers."As we stated last week following the news of Jason's auto accident, our immediate concern was for both Jason and his passenger," general manager Jason Licht said in a statement on Tuesday. "While Jason was treated and released in South Florida the same day of the accident, we wanted to ensure that our medical team had an opportunity to perform a thorough evaluation here in Tampa, and that process is currently ongoing."The two-time Pro Bowler shined in his first year on the Bucs' defensive line. He totaled 58 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and 20 quarterback hits in 2018. He spent the first eight years of his career with the New York Giants.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rob Gronkowski's retirement is barely a month old, and Eric Ebron is already looking to erase the future Hall of Famer from NFL record books. The Indianapolis Colts standout said Tuesday that he's setting his sights on breaking Gronkowski's league-record 17 touchdown receptions by a tight end."I believe Gronk still holds the record for most touchdowns, which is 17. So, if I want to do anything that is gonna be real spectacular or really good, I gotta go get 17," Ebron said, according to NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman."And if I go and get 17, I help my team win games. I did that, proved that and I feel like if I'm at my best, then I feel like this team will be at their best."Ebron emerged as one of the league's most effective red-zone weapons in his first year in Indy, grabbing 13 scores from Andrew Luck - and rushing for another - in a career season. His current deal only runs through 2019, but the pass-catcher isn't sweating landing a big payday."I know if I duplicate what I did last year we're gonna be all right," said Ebron.Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham (16 in 2013) are the only tight ends to ever catch more than 13 touchdowns; Vernon Davis (twice), Tyler Eifert, and Antonio Gates are all tied with Ebron for the third-most all time. The former first-round pick exceeded his entire four-year touchdown production with the Detroit Lions (11), and at one point, seemingly had the former New England Patriots star's record in his sights. However, after racking up 11 receiving scores through as many games, Ebron found the end zone just twice in the final five weeks of the campaign.Ebron's lofty goal could be impeded by Indy's offense having more mouths to feed than it did last season. The Colts added receiver Devin Funchess in free agency, drafted slot weapon Parris Campbell in the second round, and should have tight end Jack Doyle back healthy after he only suited up for six games in 2018.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Dallas Cowboys are making progress in their negotiations with quarterback Dak Prescott on a new long-term contract that could approach or surpass $30 million annually, a source told the Fort Worth Star Telegram's Clarence E. Hill Jr.Prescott is entering the final year of his rookie deal and the reported $30 million per year would make the 25-year-old one of the league's top five highest-paid quarterbacks."We are sold on Dak," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told the "Rich Eisen Show" on Monday. "We do want to have him for the long term. We think he is worthy of investing in for the long term. He is going into his fourth year now in the NFL."When you look at the snaps he's had, when you look at the situations he's been in, when you look at, first of all, how he got here, and then you see really how he has performed ... we see real upside in Dak."The Cowboys will have a slew of contracts to work out in the coming year. Corner Byron Jones and linebacker Jaylon Smith are both entering the final years of their contracts, and Ezekiel Elliott - whose fifth-year option keeps him with the club until 2020 - will likely also see a new deal.Dallas re-signed defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence to a five-year, $105-million contract earlier this offseason.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The NFL draft is in the rear-view mirror, and the last big wave of free-agent signings could be just around the corner. After Tuesday's deadline at 11:59 p.m. ET, teams will be able to ink players on the open market without those additions counting against the 2020 compensatory draft pick formula. The NFL awards compensatory picks (no higher than the third round and up to a maximum of four selections) to teams "that lose more, or better, compensatory free agents than they have acquired in the previous year."While the exact formula is secret, it's primarily focused on the yearly value of contracts, with playing time and postseason honors also considered factors. It's been widely assumed that the likes of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, pass-rusher Ezekiel Ansah, safety Eric Berry, running back Jay Ajayi, and linebacker Jamie Collins have been waiting for the deadline to pass in order to generate a more competitive market for their services.Ansah is working back from shoulder surgery but is expected to be ready sometime during training camp.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman has no issues with Nick Bosa's past social media activity, as long as the rookie performs on the field. It was revealed in the weeks leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft that Bosa liked pictures on Instagram containing racist and homophobic content."One thing about football is that nobody really cares what you say if you can play," Sherman told Chris Biderman of The Sacramento Bee. "At the end of the day, I think a guy that has played with African-Americans his whole life, not saying he can't be racist, but they know how to maneuver around African-Americans."While spending most of his career with the divisional rival Seattle Seahawks, Sherman has been an avid supporter of former quarterback Colin Kaepernick. In 2016, Bosa tweeted "Kaepernick is a clown," though he later apologized during a press conference upon being drafted.Sherman believes Bosa's time with his new team will help him moving forward."When you're at Ohio State, it's not like Ohio State's an all-white school. So I don't think that’s going to ever be an issue," Sherman said. "I think, at the end of the day, your beliefs are your beliefs ... but when you're in the building and you're a football player and you're a teammate, you handle yourself accordingly. And I think he understands that."The pass-rusher also deleted old tweets showcasing his support for President Donald Trump. He toned down his political commentary on social media heading into the draft, saying in early April that he "had to" because there was a chance he "might end up in San Francisco."Team President Al Guido said the No. 2 overall pick was questioned during a pre-draft meeting about his social media history but it wasn't something the organization was worried about.Sherman also doesn't believe it will be a problem in the locker room."It's not like something where guys are like, 'Hey man, what about what you said?' No. No. If he can play, he can play. If he can't play, he won't be here," Sherman said. "But at the end of the day, that's all that matters in football. Is he getting sacks on Sunday? Is he helping our team? Is he being a good teammate? Those are things that matter."Now, if he's a bad teammate, that's something we'll address."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. At least one team wanted Daniel Jones to work out at the NFL combine as a tight end, believing he wouldn't be good enough to start at quarterback, sources told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. The New York Giants selected the 6-foot-5, 221-pound Jones sixth overall, making him Eli Manning's potential successor. The pick was met with widespread criticism.Giants general manager Dave Gettleman said after the draft he knew "for a fact" Jones would have been selected before New York picked again at No. 17. However, there are reports refuting that notion. The Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins were the only other teams to draft a quarterback in the first round. The Cardinals took Kyler Murray first overall, while the Redskins scooped up Dwayne Haskins at No. 15. Redskins president Bruce Allen said Gettleman would have had "no clue" what Washington's draft board looked like.Jones passed for 2,674 yards with 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions during his final season at Duke while completing 60.5 percent of his throws.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton gave a positive update over the weekend about his recovery from surgery in January on his throwing shoulder."I'm feeling great now," Newton told ESPN's David Newton. "I feel like I do have full strength right now. But me telling the doctor, that is different than, you know, whatever the clearance process may be."Newton said he hopes to be throwing before training camp in July. It's the second time in the last three offseasons that Newton has gone under the knife; the arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder was done in part to remove scar tissue left from a 2017 operation to repair a partially torn rotator cuff. With the Panthers out of the playoff race following a six-game losing streak from Weeks 10 to 15, the 2015 MVP sat out the final two games of the season.Carolina began the year 6-2 but the offense sputtered as Newton battled with his health. The Panthers averaged just 18.8 points per game over the six-game skid (which extended to seven in Newton's first game on the sidelines), a stark drop from the 27.5 points per game they produced to start the campaign.Newton, who turns 30 later in May, is intent on giving himself the best chance at staying healthy in 2019 and beyond, and has switched to a vegan diet and hired a personal trainer."Rehab is going unbelievable, especially for me during a time now, a lot of uncertainty," Newton said. "For me, the human side of me is uncertain as well."But with the support cast from (Ryan Vermillion), the head trainer and other people that have been working with me hands on daily, I have no doubt I'll be ready to rock and roll when they expect me to be back."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The biggest 2019 free agents are officially off the market, but there is plenty of talent available as teams search for value late in the offseason. Here are 10 unsigned veterans who can fill holes remaining on NFL rosters following the draft:Ezekiel Ansah âž¡ï¸ SeahawksAfter trading Frank Clark to the Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle's pass rush is projected to suffer in 2019. The team selected L.J. Collier in the first round to fill the Michael Bennett role ("big" defensive end), but a speed rusher must be added as well. Ansah played in just seven games (two starts) last season due to a shoulder injury and was never quite himself, but he could be in for a rebound campaign. The two sides reportedly met last week, so it's possible an agreement is on the horizon.Ndamukong Suh âž¡ï¸ Patriots Similar to last offseason, Suh may opt to sign a short-term contract with a contending club. We see no better fit than New England. The Patriots lost Malcom Brown and only addressed the defensive tackle position in the fifth round of the draft. Accomplished as a pass-rusher and in run defense, Suh would add a potentially dominant presence to the heart of Bill Belichick's defense and could be the missing piece to a championship-repeat campaign.Jay Ajayi âž¡ï¸ Buccaneers Michael Reaves / Getty Images Sport / GettyTampa Bay failed to address its backfield during the draft, but there are still plenty of free-agent options available. Though Ajayi is coming off a torn ACL, he is likely still an upgrade over Peyton Barber, who averaged a pedestrian 3.7 yards per carry in 2018. At the very least, Ajayi fits as a rotational piece in Bruce Arians' offense alongside Barber and Ronald Jones, who the Buccaneers hope can take a substantial leap during his sophomore campaign.Eric Berry âž¡ï¸ JaguarsTom Coughlin and the Jaguars intend to revert to their winning formula from 2017: Run the football and play stellar defense. While Jacksonville has talent at every position on its stop unit, the team is weakest at safety opposite 2018 third-round pick Ronnie Harrison. Berry isn't the All-Pro talent he once was, but he would provide experience and leadership to the back end of the Jaguars' defense. After all he's been through, we'd be foolish to bet against Berry rebounding this year.Jamie Collins âž¡ï¸ Lions Why not add another former New England Patriot to Detroit's roster? Collins isn't quite the playmaking defender he once was, but he's a versatile chess piece. Matt Patricia could use a short-term upgrade at linebacker next to Jarrad Davis while second-round rookie Jahlani Tavai gets up to speed. Whether it's as a pass-rusher, in coverage, or against the run, Collins is a risky, high-upside target for any team.Manti Te'o âž¡ï¸ BroncosIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyDenver was thought to be interested in drafting the 2019 class' top-tier linebackers, Devin White and Devin Bush. When the Broncos traded down with the Pittsburgh Steelers, they passed on filling a weak spot on Vic Fangio's defense. With Te'o still on the market, however, John Elway has the option to add a talented player late in the offseason. The linebacker was effective last year in both coverage and run defense, and would round out a strong Broncos group.Michael Crabtree âž¡ï¸ GiantsIf general manager Dave Gettleman insists his team can be competitive in 2019 with Eli Manning as the starter, he needs to find his quarterback another weapon. While Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard are versatile receivers, the Giants' offense lacks a true red-zone threat at the position. Now on the wrong side of 30, Crabtree's play has admittedly declined in recent years, but he's hauled in eight or more touchdowns in three of his last four campaigns. New York likely can't trust Corey Coleman or Cody Latimer as full-time starters.Morris Claiborne âž¡ï¸ PanthersCarolina has little depth at cornerback behind James Bradberry and Donte Jackson and didn't address the position during the draft. With relative youth and inexperience in the secondary, Claiborne would add a savvy veteran presence to Ron Rivera's defense. The former Jets and Cowboys cornerback could compete for an outside spot in nickel packages, which would shift Jackson, the Panthers' 2018 second-rounder, to his comfortable slot role.Tre Boston âž¡ï¸ CowboysIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyA free agent in 2018, Boston didn't sign with the Arizona Cardinals until late July. He may have to wait just as long this year, but he's a veteran who deserves at least a one-year contract. The 26-year-old is adept in coverage and profiles as a solid starter who can patrol the deep middle of the field. The Cowboys, who didn't draft a safety until late into Day 3, should give Boston a call to compete with Xavier Woods opposite George Iloka.Nick Perry âž¡ï¸ Jets The Jets selected former Florida standout Jachai Polite in the third round, but are still in need of a boost to their pass rush. Perry battled injuries en route to just 1.5 sacks in nine contests last season, but he accumulated 18 combined sacks over the previous two campaigns. The former first-round pick, who is still just 29, would add experience and production to a relatively young group.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Oakland Raiders general manager Mike Mayock had a lot at stake during the 2019 NFL Draft, his first with the team.Entering the draft with four selections in the first 35 picks, Mayock left with nine new players, including three from Clemson and one from Alabama - the two teams that met in the most recent College Football Playoff National Championship - and says the talent displayed in that powerhouse matchup left an impact on him."I felt it on the field before the game, these were the two best college programs in the country and have been for several years now," Mayock said, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer."And when you walk around on the field before the game and watch these guys warm up, and you do your body types, you’re taking notes - they look like two NFL teams. I said it to somebody, I don't remember who, and I remember thinking to myself, 'Man, if you just draft from these two teams, you're gonna do well, forget the rest of the country.'"I didn't consciously set out to make that happen. But we got more and more impressed with these Clemson kids, as we met them, as people. We loved the Alabama tailback. And it worked out pretty well from our perspective."In the draft, Oakland selected defensive end Clelin Ferrell, wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, and safety Trayvon Mullen from Clemson, and nabbed running back Josh Jacobs from Alabama. Many were surprised to see Ferrell selected fourth overall, but Mayock was intent on drafting him."At the end of the day, people act like the thought wouldn't occur to me to trade down and still get Cle," Mayock said. "He was our guy, OK? And whether we got him at 4, 8, 10, it didn’t matter. He was gonna be our guy."He’s a foundation player. And even more importantly, he’s a three-down defensive end who can stick his hand in the dirt and play on run downs and pass downs. He's not a guy who's going to be a designated pass-rusher. He’s in there on every snap. And he’s gonna set the tone for us, as far as these young guys are concerned. I couldn’t wait to get to that pick."After hiring Mayock following a 4-12 record last season, the Raiders will hope his draft strategy can lead to better results in 2019.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eli Manning is famous for his unflappable approach to life, and the New York Giants quarterback was apparently the only person to not have a strong reaction to the selection of his heir apparent, Daniel Jones."He's had no response," Shurmur said, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "I will say this again: I've never been around a person that can stay in the moment better than Eli. And I think that is something that is really, really unique about him. He's staying in the moment."After passing on Sam Darnold and Josh Allen with the No. 2 overall pick last year, the Giants drafted the former Duke quarterback with the first of their three first-round picks in the 2019 draft (sixth overall).General manager Dave Gettleman hinted after the draft that New York could follow the Aaron Rodgers-Brett Favre model by sitting Jones for multiple years behind Manning, who Gettleman has insisted has years left in the tank despite a poor 2018 campaign. The 38-year-old finished 21st in passer rating, 25th in ESPN's QBR metric, and 31st out of 38 qualifying quarterbacks in Pro Football Focus' grading system. Manning will also be without his top weapon from the last five seasons, Odell Beckham Jr., who was traded to the Cleveland Browns after racking up nearly 5,500 receiving yards to start his NFL career.Shurmur believes Manning is primed to surprise in 2019 despite the drama surrounding the Beckham and Jones decisions."He's training to play and have a terrific season," Shurmur said. Bobby Wagner said Saturday he wants to retire as a member of the Seattle Seahawks but revealed they've yet to discuss an extension ahead of a contract year for the All-Pro linebacker."I'm preparing like this is my last year as a Seahawk," Wagner told NFL Network's Omar Ruiz. "If it is, I want to make sure I go out with a bang and make sure I give the city something to remember."Wagner, who's representing himself in negotiations, added he understands "it's a business."The Seahawks had three key players to extend entering this offseason: quarterback Russell Wilson, franchise-tagged defensive end Frank Clark, and Wagner.Wilson, the team's top priority, inked a four-year deal worth an NFL-record $35 million per season in mid-April; later in the month, Clark was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs for a first-round pick and was immediately handed $105 million over five years. The Pro Bowl inside linebacker will likely command a contract toward the top of the market after racking up 916 total tackles in just seven seasons. The New York Jets' prized free-agent acquisition, C.J.
