Week 13 Mismatches: Von Miller poised to dominate in Cincinnati
Here's a breakdown of four significant mismatches we expect to see in Week 13:Broncos LB Von Miller vs Bengals RT Bobby HartVon Miller against any right tackle is typically a mismatch - but this week, Miller truly does get a tasty matchup against Bengals right tackle Bobby Hart. The 2018 season has seen more of the same from Miller, with the perennial All-Pro racking up 37 tackles, 10 for loss, 17 quarterback hits, 10.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two pass deflections, and an interception. Miller has filled up the box score in his eighth season.Hart, on the other hand, has struggled this year. Although he’s been slightly better in pass protection than run blocking, Miller will likely feast in both areas.Hart tends to struggle with the better speed-rushers in the NFL, and Miller is one of the more elite players in the game. Hart had a lot of trouble with Dee Ford of the Chiefs earlier this season, and he’s not as well-rounded or as nuanced of a pass-rusher as Miller. Here’s an example of Hart’s inability against speed this year:On this play, Hart is responsible for blocking Ford (No. 55) in pass protection. Once the ball is snapped, Hart fails to get enough depth in the ‘kick slide’ portion of his pass set. This forces Hart to stop his kick slide and turn his shoulders perpendicular to the line of scrimmage to attempt to push Ford past the pocket.Ford is able to race by Hart (and the running back’s chip, which partially gets in Hart’s way) and finish with a sack-fumble, which was recovered by the Bengals. If Hart thought blocking Ford was tough, wait until he tries to stymie Miller on the edge. Miller has unique upper- and lower-body flexibility, which allows him to contort his body to reduce his blockable surface area as he speeds around the edge. Here’s a great example:Here, Miller is in a two-point stance with an outside shade over Chiefs right tackle Mitchell Schwartz. Once the ball is snapped, Miller explodes out of his stance with long strides, gobbling up ground to challenge Schwartz’s edge. When he gets within distance, Miller feints as if he’s going to use a long arm technique. However, as soon as Schwartz tries to shoot his hands over Miller’s long arm, Miller drops his pad level, allowing him to stay tight around the edge. This forces Schwartz to miss with his strike and allows Miller to finish with the sack.Opposite of Hart, No. 58 is poised for a huge day, especially considering that Bradley Chubb's presence on the opposite side makes it difficult to double-team him. Expect Miller to finish with a sack or two and be a pain in the rear for the Bengals' offense all day long.Eagles DT Fletcher Cox vs Redskins' interior offensive lineThe Redskins' offensive line is reeling right now. The unit that was one of the best in football to begin the year has been ravaged by injuries, as Washington has four interior offensive linemen on injured reserve. This has forced the Redskins to start the trio of Jonathan Cooper, Chase Roullier, and Tony Bergstrom. These three battle in the trenches but lack the continuity and talent to consistently play at an above-average level. They struggled mightily against the Cowboys’ rag-tag group of defensive tackles on Thanksgiving, and things only get more difficult this week, as they face one of the best interior defenders in the NFL - Fletcher Cox.Even though the Eagles have struggled this year, Cox has been fantastic, accumulating 32 tackles, five for loss, 21 quarterback hits (third among all defenders), and four sacks. He is a menace against the run and pass, and he’s one of the toughest interior defenders to block one-on-one. Cox has a refined tool kit and outstanding hand technique, which allows him to batter, bludgeon, and blow by offensive linemen with ease. Here’s a great example:On this play, Cox is aligned at the three-technique position, an outside shade over the right guard. Once the ball is snapped, Cox attacks the right guard’s outside edge, feinting with a two-hand swipe to raise the hands of his opponent before opening up the space necessary for him to sequence into a powerful rip with his inside arm. From there, Cox is able to turn his hips and sack the quarterback all while absorbing the right guard’s last-ditch effort to push him beyond the pocket.Cox should be able to have his way with whoever lines up across from him against Washington. Keep an eye on No. 91 Monday night, he’s set up to dominate.Bears LB Leonard Floyd vs. Giants RT Chad WheelerKhalil Mack (rightfully) gets most of the credit for the Bears’ outstanding defense, but he’s not the only impactful edge defender on the roster, as Leonard Floyd has developed into a quality player in his own right.Floyd is one of the defenders whose stat line doesn’t adequately convey his level of play this season, recording 29 tackles, four for loss, five quarterback hits, and a sack. Although those numbers aren’t impressive, Floyd has evidently taken the next step in his development and has become a more well-rounded player. This week, Floyd has a great opportunity to enhance his stat line, as he gets a juicy matchup against Giants right tackle Chad Wheeler. The right tackle has struggled on the edge this season, giving up more than two pressures in every game but two. Wheeler is a second-year undrafted free agent who was thrust into a starting role too early.A below-average offensive tackle when left one-on-one on the edge, Wheeler will be in deep against Floyd all game.As a pass-rusher, Floyd is effective on stunts and uses his long frame when rushing off the edge. Though he will likely be able to generate pressure on the quarterback, Floyd is really going to make his presence felt against the run. Here’s an example:Here, Floyd is aligned in a two-point stance with a slight outside shade over Minnesota's tight end. As soon as the ball is snapped, Floyd gets double-teamed by the wide receiver and left tackle. Even while engaged with the wideout, Floyd is able to attain inside hand position on the left tackle.Once the wide receiver combos over to the filling Bears defender, Floyd does a great job of standing his ground while maintaining the separation necessary to disengage from the block and make the tackle.Expect Floyd to be a huge reason why the Bears' defense bottlenecks the Giants' run game while generating pressure off the edge.Colts DE Kemoko Turay vs. Jaguars LT Ereck FlowersTo the surprise of many (but not yours truly), Kemoko Turay has been one of the best rookie edge defenders in the league this season. Accumulating 13 tackles, one for loss, 11 quarterback hits, and four sacks, Turay has shown improvement each and every week. This week, Turay will get a great opportunity to add to his box score, as he will be matched up with Ereck Flowers, who is one of the worst starting offensive tackles in football. Flowers, who was released from the Giants earlier this season, is a mess technically, as he relies on his size and brute strength to get the job done. Flowers’ footwork is clunky and uncoordinated while his hands lack accuracy and timing.Turay should be able to take full advantage, as his versatility has impressed for a rookie this season. At 6-foot-5 and 253 pounds, Turay’s pass-rush is built off his speed, as he has the lower-body flexibility, balance, and explosiveness to blow by offensive tackles off the edge. Here’s an example:On this play, Turay is aligned in a wide-nine technique with a wide outside shade over the left tackle. Once the ball is snapped, Turay explodes out of his stance with a wide angle of entry, forcing the left tackle to cover a lot of distance with his pass set. Once he gets within distance, Turay employs a cross-chop to win the edge as he flattens to the quarterback for the sack.On top of his prowess as a speed-rusher, Turay has shown an ability to win outside, inside, and through offensive linemen, using well-timed hands and an impressive ability to convert his speed to power.Flowers is going to have his hands full with the rookie pass-rusher all game. Don’t be surprised if Turay is able to notch his first two-sack game of his career against the Jaguars.John Owning is a football writer at theScore. Jerry Jones: Cowboys are 'different cats' after beating NFC favorite Saints
The Dallas Cowboys became a serious threat in the NFC after a shocking Thursday night win over the New Orleans Saints, and owner Jerry Jones believes it could be a season-changing moment for his franchise.Dallas forced MVP front-runner Drew Brees into his worst performance of the year and held the offense, which was averaging a league-high 37.2 points per game, to just 10 points. With four straight wins and a signature performance in prime time, Jones is expecting his team to move forward with a newfound swagger."This bunch, this team won’t be the same again," Jones said, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "I'm serious. You win something like this against a team that well-coached, those kind of players, a caliber of team like that, and you know you've done it; the mirror knows you've done it. You change. This is a changer in here. These guys, they're different cats now as they go forward."The 7-5 Cowboys are now in the driver's seat in the NFC East, and their position could potentially improve even further with the Washington Redskins set to face off with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Sherman: I don't have a relationship with Russell Wilson
Richard Sherman's much-anticipated return to CenturyLink Field will take place this Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers visit the Seattle Seahawks.Sherman spent the first seven years of his illustrious career in Seattle, where he was named a first-team All-Pro three times, made the Pro Bowl on four occasions, and won a Super Bowl in 2013.However, the deconstruction of the once-vaunted Legion of Boom came suddenly as Sherman was allowed to walk this past offseason. He would wind up signing with the rival Niners after visiting with several teams. Before his exit, his relationship with quarterback Russell Wilson was reportedly strained.Asked on Thursday about where things stand with Wilson, Sherman was blunt."I don't really have a relationship with Russell," Sherman said, according to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. "We were teammates, we played during a very special time for the franchise."It's believed that things began to fracture on the Seahawks after their Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots in 2014. Members of the defense reportedly questioned the team's decision to throw the ball at the goal line, rather than handing it to Marshawn Lynch for a potential game-winning touchdown.Sherman has previously disputed the notion that he and Wilson don't get along, though he qualified it by stating "every single person on every single team doesn't hang out."The veteran corner appears to be relishing the opportunity to finally face his former QB."I've also seen him throw five picks in a game, so you see what he's capable of on both sides of it. You understand that he can be defended," he said.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Kingsbury vetting NFL and college offers despite USC rumors
Kliff Kingsbury, the offensive mastermind who was fired by Texas Tech after six years as head coach, is vetting NFL and college offers, a source close to him told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The report comes amid rumors that Kingsbury has agreed to become Clay Helton's offensive coordinator at USC, which his agent, Erik Burkhardt, denied."It's premature to say that any decision has been made," Burkhardt told The Athletic's Bruce Feldman.Kingsbury is believed to be a hot commodity due to his proven ability to develop quarterbacks and coordinate prolific offenses. He coached NFL pivots Baker Mayfield, Davis Webb, and Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech, and was Johnny Manziel's offensive coordinator during his Heisman Trophy season at Texas A&M.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns OC: Mayfield spoke 'the truth' on Hue Jackson
Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens intimated Thursday that he agreed with quarterback Baker Mayfield's scathing remarks about former head coach Hue Jackson."I don't have a problem with Baker saying anything like that," Kitchens told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. "I don't know when it became big news to speak the truth."Since defeating Jackson's new team - the Bengals - on Sunday, Mayfield criticized Jackson for running to a division rival, called him "fake" in an Instagram comment, and later said he didn't regret any of it. Mayfield also snubbed Jackson's attempt at a hug after their respective teams faced off in Cincinnati.
Report: Bears planning to start Daniel vs. Giants, Trubisky still not throwing
The Chicago Bears are planning to start quarterback Chase Daniel against the New York Giants on Sunday in Week 13, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Mitchell Trubisky's expected to miss a second consecutive contest due to a shoulder injury despite returning to practice on Wednesday. Head coach Matt Nagy said Thursday that Trubisky still isn't throwing, according to Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.The 32-year-old Daniel performed admirably on Thanksgiving Day against the Detroit Lions in his first NFL start since 2014, and just the third of his career. He completed 27 of 37 pass attempts for 230 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He also rushed for 4 yards and recorded an 8-yard reception.Nagy previously indicated Trubisky could play through his injury right now, but the team is being cautious with its second-year passer, according to Garafolo.Chicago sits first in the NFC North with a record of 8-3-0.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vikings' Diggs says he'll play vs. Patriots despite knee injury
Minnesota Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs missed practice on both Wednesday and Thursday with a knee injury, but said he plans to play Sunday in Week 13 against the New England Patriots, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press' Chris Tomasson.Earlier this month, Diggs declared himself healthy enough to play in Week 9 against the Detroit Lions after missing a week of practice with a rib injury, only to be inactive on game day.The star receiver is coming off a big Week 12 performance against the Green Bay Packers that saw him catch eight balls for 77 yards and a touchdown. With the Vikings' receiving corps looking thin, recently acquired running back Ameer Abdullah took practice snaps with the position group in place of Diggs and Chad Beebe, according to Zone Coverage's Sam Ekstrom. Beebe missed Minnesota's Week 12 game with a hamstring injury. This season, Diggs has 79 catches for 790 yards and six touchdowns.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Redskins exec: Reuben Foster issues are 'small potatoes'
Washington Redskins senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams downplayed the controversial decision to claim linebacker Reuben Foster off waivers following his arrest for domestic violence."We've got people who are in high, high, high, high places that have done far worse, and if you look at it realistically, they're still up there," Williams told Doc Walker on The Team 980 on Thursday. "This is small potatoes (compared to) a lot of things out there. But at the same time, it's a big issue in America today, whether or not it's in football, whether or not it's in everyday life, whether or not it's in politics, it's out there."The Redskins were the only team in the NFL to place a claim on Foster, who was waived by the San Francisco 49ers in light of his Saturday arrest. The acquisition provoked a public outcry."We knew there was going to be some backlash, and we understand that, and rightfully so," Williams said. "I've got six daughters, so it ain't something I would condone, but at the same time I think we are in the business of at least looking into (his case). I could sit here, and I won't, name a bunch of teams that took on players that got a lot of baggage that nobody's saying anything about. You can't get into nitpicking what they do and what you do. You gotta look at it from your standpoint. There was a lot of thought that went into it. It wasn't just a spur of the moment type of thing. We all gathered, we talked about it, we knew there was going to be some risk-reward involved in it."Williams added that the Redskins' top officials were united in the decision to claim Foster, though it remains unknown who, exactly, was consulted. Head coach Jay Gruden said Wednesday he was game-planning for the Philadelphia Eagles when the claim was made. The NFL placed Foster on the commissioner's exempt list once he was awarded to the Redskins, preventing him from playing while it investigates the incident.Williams noted Washington spoke to two Redskins players who were teammates with Foster at Alabama, among other people, about the linebacker before claiming him.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Flacco practices, but Jackson reportedly expected to start vs. Falcons
Baltimore Ravens veteran quarterback Joe Flacco returned to practice Thursday, but rookie Lamar Jackson is expected to make his third straight start on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.Flacco missed the Ravens' past two games due to a hip injury. He still appeared limited during throwing drills at practice, according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN.In Flacco's absence, Jackson led the Ravens to consecutive wins over the Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders. Overall this season, the 32nd overall pick of April's draft has completed 60.7 percent of his passing attempts for 415 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He's added two touchdowns and 329 yards on 65 rushing attempts. The Ravens sit second in the AFC North with a 6-5 record.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Film Room: Amari Cooper's making life easy for Dak Prescott
One roster move was all it took to rejuvenate the Dallas Cowboys' sputtering passing attack.Since coming over from the Oakland Raiders for a first-round pick, wide receiver Amari Cooper's been the catalyst for an offensive surge that's helped move Dallas into contention for the NFC East title.Without Cooper, the Cowboys went 3-4 and posted 20 points per game as quarterback Dak Prescott averaged a mere 202 passing yards. But with their new receiver in the fold, the Cowboys have gone 3-1, Prescott's averaged 252 yards through the air, and Dallas has put up 23.5 points per game.Prescott's also recorded an astronomical 136 passer rating when targeting Cooper, who was named NFC Player of the Week for his 180-yard, two-touchdown performance against the Washington Redskins on Thanksgiving Day.Overall, Cooper's already caught 22 balls for 349 yards and three touchdowns in four games with Dallas. And the tape clearly shows that his route running and separation are putting the Cowboys in position to succeed, while giving Prescott - who can struggle with ball placement - much easier throwing windows. Those attributes were necessary for a Dallas receiving group that previously lacked a No. 1 option who could get open consistently. Now, Cooper's making his quarterback's job much easier, while his separation is leading to extra yards after the catch and several big plays. Here are a few examples. On this first play, Cooper (lined up at the top of the image) runs a simple out pattern against Ronald Darby of the Philadelphia Eagles:NFLFirst, Cooper sells Darby on a post route that would break to the middle of the field. The defender sees Cooper dart inside for a few steps and sells out to stop it. However, Cooper stops on a dime and breaks to the outside, causing Darby to rotate awkwardly as he tries to keep up:This is known as the defender "flipping his hips" the wrong way, which we'll see on a number of Cooper's routes. Here, it creates the separation and gives Prescott an easy target for the first down.On the same drive against Philadelphia, Cooper executes a picture-perfect slant route against Rasul Douglas (bottom of screen) on a third down:Again, Cooper flips the hips of his defender. He initially releases to the outside, selling Douglas on a vertical route. But once the defender opens up his hips to the sideline to try and run with Cooper, the receiver knows he has him beat to the inside. In just a few steps, Cooper cuts underneath Douglas and gets enough separation to move the chains.Overall, Cooper's been incredibly effective on third downs for Dallas:
Rodgers planning to 'let it all hang out' in Packers' final 5 games
Aaron Rodgers doesn't think he's been doing anything differently through the first 12 weeks of the 2018 season, but he's willing to try shaking things up, and potentially force the issue, to help the Green Bay Packers make a final push for the postseason."Yeah, why not?" Rodgers said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. "If we lose, you guys are just going to write us off, so might as well let it all hang out these last five (games)."The Packers occupy third place in the NFC North with a 4-6-1 record. They're undefeated at home but winless on the road and enter Week 13's contest against the Arizona Cardinals on a two-game losing streak.Rodgers has his lowest completion percentage since 2015 at 61.7 percent, but he's on pace for a career high in passing yards and has an incredible 20:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The six-time Pro Bowler and two-time MVP insists his Week 1 knee injury hasn't forced him to change his playing style."I throw how I throw. I'm not playing any different this year. It's just we're not completing as many passes percentage-wise," Rodgers said.He added: "I listen to my quarterback coach and my offensive coordinator and my head coach. My study of myself, I'm very critical of my own film. I'm not playing any differently, fundamental-wise."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Bortles: Week 13 benching 'big-picture' move for Jaguars
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles will be on the bench for the start of Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts after Cody Kessler was named this week's starter by head coach Doug Marrone. The third overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft said he understands the decision and why the team may be choosing to look forward."I think that is definitely big-picture, but not necessarily something that I'm worried about right now," Bortles said of his future with the team, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN.Bortles signed a three-year extension through the 2020 season before the start of the current campaign. He's carrying a cap hit of just $10 million this year, but it would cost the Jaguars $16.5 million in dead cap space to cut Bortles before the start of the 2019 league year on March 13 at 4 p.m. ET, and $11.5 million if done after June 1.The fifth-year pro is tied for eighth in the league in interceptions and ranks 30th among 34 qualified quarterbacks in passer rating this season. The Jaguars, who sit fourth in the AFC South with a 3-8-0 record through 12 weeks, have had just one winning season with Bortles at the helm."I put myself in this position and I didn't play good enough," Bortles sad. "Didn't win football games. Couldn't find a way to get it done. And when that happens, it's a business and everybody understands that. I don't think there's anything personal involved. As a quarterback, I think you have one job and that's to win a football game. And if you don't do that, your time's probably limited."The 25-year-old Kessler, the 93rd overall pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 2016 draft, will make his first start since 2016. He completed 21 of 30 attempts for 156 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in a second-half appearance against the Houston Texans in Week 7.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bucs offering free seats vs. Panthers to season-ticket holders
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are offering two free tickets to season-pass members for Week 13's game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reported. The offering comes after the Buccaneers drew an eight-year low with just 40,682 people in attendance against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 12. The previous regular-season low at Raymond James Stadium was in November 2010, when the team drew a crowd of 39,781.Overall, the Buccaneers rank 30th in average attendance this season (55,181), ahead of only the Cincinnati Bengals (52,844) and the Los Angeles Chargers (35,202)."We have always looked for ways to add to the fan experience, and this offer is just another example of our desire to bring added value to our season-pass members," Bucs chief operating officer Brian Ford said. "We have made similar offers over the years, and the holiday seemed like a great opportunity to thank our loyal season-pass members with a special opportunity like this."Tampa Bay is currently 4-7 on the season and hasn't made the playoffs since 2007."Small crowd last week," defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul said about the Buccaneers' 27-9 win over the 49ers. "We played our hearts out last week, but it's our home field so we should have a home advantage. I'm pretty sure we will (against Carolina). If not, we'll make it."It's not frustrating because you've got to understand the fans, too. They're tired of losing ... at the end of the day, we still want you all to come out. The more fans there, the better we play. The better I play."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: NFLPA looking into drug testing of Eric Reid
The NFL Players Association is investigating the degree to which the league has drug tested Carolina Panthers safety Eric Reid, a source told ESPN's David Newton.Reid believes the league has targeted him with excessive drug testing, stating he's been randomly summoned on five separate occasions since taking his initial test upon signing with the Panthers."I know what I'm dealing with," Reid said Wednesday. "I have a collusion case against the NFL. This is something that doesn't surprise me from them. It's supposed to be random. It's obviously not. I'm not surprised about it. Even though it seems crazy on the outside looking in, and it is, I'm not surprised."Reid said he has never failed a drug test. The NFL declined to comment on the report."I know I've done nothing wrong, so I'm not concerned that my drug tests will come back ... that I'll fail that test," said Reid. "But the system is lying, much like what I'm protesting. It's supposed to be a random system."I've been looking at math statistics trying to talk to people. I think it's like a one percent chance that somebody gets tested this much. Statistically, big problem."Under the collective bargaining agreement, an independent laboratory performs all drug tests and players are selected via a computer program. The league and NFLPA are not involved.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Giants have not decided Manning's future
The New York Giants have just six wins in their last 27 games, but they still aren't ready to commit to a change behind center.New York has yet to make a decision about quarterback Eli Manning's status after the 2018 season, a source told Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. The Giants are reportedly considering Manning to be their best possible option for the 2019 campaign, according to the source.Manning carries a $22.2-million cap hit next year and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2019-20 season. The Giants selected quarterback Kyle Lauletta in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft but he's yet to take a snap this season.Manning has completed a career-best 69.1 percent of his passes for 3,093 yards, 14 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 11 games. Despite his efficient season, the Giants rank 22nd in scoring offense, averaging 21.5 points per game.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Seahawks' Carroll praises Sherman's season
Time apparently heals all wounds as Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll seems to be moving past the rift between him and San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman.Sherman spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Seahawks, establishing himself as one of the NFL's top cornerbacks and one of the greatest players in franchise history. During the 2017 season, Sherman's relationship with Carroll and the organization deteriorated, eventually leading to his release. The 30-year-old is having another effective campaign - despite the 49ers' 2-9 record - and Carroll lauded his former protege Wednesday."He's having a very successful season,” Carroll said, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. "Every year you adapt, and Richard is a brilliant football player, and he has always been a guy that we would always work together with the little things that we would grow with year to year to try to stay ahead of it. And he's continued to do that. I think he's been very successful this season."After signing with the 49ers, Sherman blasted the Seahawks, telling reporters his former club had lost their way.Although Carroll and Sherman were at odds for most of the 2017 campaign, the Seahawks' head coach is choosing to remember their shared success which culminated in two trips to the Super Bowl and a championship in 2013."We had a great time together," Carroll said. "We went through so much, and so much growth and challenges, victories and frustration. We went through a ton of stuff together. I really cherish the time that Sherm was here. I really enjoyed working with him. He's such a bright person and such a great competitor and extraordinary performer. It was really a great time."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cooper: Trade to Cowboys 'changed me'
Amari Cooper is apparently enjoying football again since his trade to the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys acquired Cooper from the Oakland Raiders for a first-round pick in October, and the wide receiver feels rejuvenated since joining the squad."Just reflecting on my last four games (in Dallas) and my personality here, I feel like it did change me, as far as having that chip on my shoulder," Cooper told Yahoo Sports' Kimberley A. Martin. "Not that I wasn't passionate before, but playing with more passion, trying to intentionally have fun out there. It definitely has changed me, in terms of me going out there and just having fun with it."Because when you get traded, you start to think, 'Wow, that can happen, just like that.'"The former first-round pick reflected on the move and the fact he'd never before been traded because he was always an important piece of the team."I wasn't really happy in Oakland or anything like that," he continued. "But when I sat and thought about it (Monday) night ... I thought about the fact that they traded me away. I don't know how to feel about it."Cooper is thriving with the Cowboys, grabbing 22 receptions for 349 yards and three touchdowns over his last four games. He exploded for 180 yards and two scores in a Thanksgiving Day victory over the Washington Redskins last week.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Gruden unsure why Redskins claimed Foster: 'That's a good question'
Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden struggled Wednesday to defend the team's waiver claim of linebacker Reuben Foster, who was arrested Saturday on a domestic violence charge."That's a good question," Gruden responded when asked why Washington didn't let Foster's legal situation play out before pursuing him. "We probably could've done that. We saw an opportunity there to claim him and we chose to do that as an organization."The Redskins were awarded Foster via waivers from the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, three days after his arrest. They were the only team to put in a claim on Foster, whose off-field issues were well-known when he entered the 2017 NFL Draft out of Alabama.Foster landed on the commissioner's exempt list immediately after he was claimed, meaning he'll be banned from playing while the league investigates the circumstances surrounding his arrest."There's no guarantee he's ever gonna play here, to be honest with you," said Gruden. "He's got a lot of work to do - personally, with the team, with the NFL, with himself, before he even thinks about playing football again."Upon acquiring him, the Redskins stated they had spoken to several of their players who were teammates with Foster at Alabama about his character.
Maroon 5's Adam Levine 'still formulating' things about SB halftime show
Despite reports claiming Maroon 5 will headline the Super Bowl LII halftime show in Atlanta, the band's frontman, Adam Levine, is staying tight-lipped about the performance.Levine provided a cryptic answer when asked about his decision to sign on for the halftime show in an interview with Shirley Halperin of Variety."I'm still formulating a lot of things," he said.Rihanna reportedly turned down an invitation to perform at Super Bowl LIII in support of Colin Kaepernick, and a Change.org petition urging Maroon 5 to do the same has garnered more than 64,000 signatures.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. O.J. Simpson's ex-manager: New doc will show he 'didn't act alone' in murders
O.J. Simpson's former manager is pitching a documentary series he says will provide evidence that the former NFL running back "didn't act alone" in the 1994 murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman.Norman Pardo, who worked with Simpson for nearly two decades following his acquittal, has been developing the documentary for the past four years with co-executive producer Dylan Howard, according to Oli Coleman of Page Six.Pardo claims to have more than 70 hours of never-before-seen video of Simpson."For the first time, the most thorough investigation into the murder ever conducted will be shared with America," Pardo said. "We have assembled a team of internationally renowned criminal investigators, experts, and lawyers."And they believe they can not only prove Simpson was involved in (his ex-wife's and Goldman's) deaths - but, for the first time, reveal he had at least one accomplice."Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold is participating in QB drills at practice on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a foot injury in Week 9 against the Miami Dolphins, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. The rookie missed the Jets' past two games, giving way to veteran Josh McCown for consecutive losses to the AFC East-rival Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots by a combined score of 68-23.The No. 3 pick in April's draft completed 21 of 39 pass attempts for 229 yards and four interceptions against Miami.Darnold leads the league with 14 interceptions despite the missed time. The 9 best value picks to win the Super Bowl
As the NFL playoff picture starts to take shape, here are our nine best value picks to win the Super Bowl (odds courtesy BetOnline.ag):Pittsburgh Steelers (+1000)Preseason odds: +1000Remember when the Pittsburgh Steelers weren't going to win the AFC North, let alone live up to their contender billing following a 1-2-1 start? Those were good times. Pittsburgh rattled off sixth straight wins before last week's loss, and now might be the perfect time to buy back. The Steelers are the No. 1 team in the NFL in adjusted net yards per game (+1.2), posting 6.3 yards per play on offense while allowing a quiet 5.1 yards per play on defense. Pittsburgh should also be favored in four of its final five games.Minnesota Vikings (+2000)Preseason odds: (+1200)The Minnesota Vikings have been surprisingly volatile in 2018. There are times when they play like a top-five team, and there are also games that Minnesota has blatantly given away this season. It's not an easy team to trust. Still, Minnesota should be favored in its final three games. This is primarily a value play on a team that ranks sixth in the league in adjusted net yards per game (+0.5).New England Patriots (+650)Preseason odds: +500The New England Patriots are likely near the top of their market price after opening up as the favorites prior to the season. It's not every day that a franchise with a winning track record like New England is this far behind, but it's no secret the Pats employ a roster that's less talented than in years past. With a few teams rising in the ranks, the Patriots are all of a sudden flying under the radar. You shouldn't need too much persuading to bet on Bill Belichick and Tom Brady in the postseason.Los Angeles Rams (+400)Preseason odds: +1000Head coach Sean McVay is flourishing in the current era of the NFL, playing chess while (mostly) everyone else is playing checkers. The Los Angeles Rams should find themselves right in the thick of things for a deep playoff run based solely off their firepower on offense, which ranks third in the NFL in both points per game and adjusted yards per play. But, what makes LA so intriguing heading forward over other Super Bowl hopefuls is the defense. The Rams should be getting some key bodies back from injury for the stretch run and are still dominant up front.Los Angeles Chargers (+2200)Preseason odds: +2200The injury to Melvin Gordon might sting for the Los Angeles Chargers, but that's an offense that can find scoring in other ways behind sneaky MVP candidate Philip Rivers. After all, some thought the Steelers were doomed with the absence of Le'Veon Bell, only to find that running back production can certainly be replaced. The Chargers are third in the NFL in adjusted net yards per game (+1.0) and are above average on both sides of the ball. While there might not be a single team with as high a ceiling and low a floor as the Chargers, they're certainly capable of beating any team in the league.Kansas City Chiefs (+450)Preseason odds: +2800If you're banking on the Kansas City Chiefs to win the whole thing, you're expecting Patrick Mahomes and the offense to continue to score at will. Given there hasn't been a speed bump yet, it's hard to imagine that'll happen at any point this season. Kansas City is now No. 2 in the NFL in adjusted net yards per game (+1.1) behind only the Steelers, and, similar to most in the Super Bowl hunt, needs to be just somewhat competent on defense. With Eric Berry back on the practice field and his potential return to game action looming, the Chiefs are a legitimate contender.New Orleans Saints (+275)Preseason odds: +1600The New Orleans Saints are now the favorites to win the Super Bowl, and deservedly so. The Saints are on a 10-game winning streak and are posting otherworldly offensive numbers, ranking first in the league at 37.2 points per game. The value on New Orleans has obviously been squeezed dry at this point, but what separates the Saints from the pack has been the defensive surge. The Saints have allowed 24 points or fewer in seven of the last eight and can balance their high-powered offense with a stout defense. In reality, they don't need much help behind MVP hopeful Drew Brees.Chicago Bears (+1600)Preseason odds: +10000The Chicago Bears are obviously a team you would have wanted to scoop up before Week 1, given the difference between the preseason and current odds. They might lack the flash and offensive numbers compared to other teams in the mix, but Matt Nagy's team is one of the hottest in the league with five straight wins. Chicago might be a better buy down the stretch, as they face the Rams and Green Bay Packers before closing the season out with two road games.Indianapolis Colts (+3300)Preseason odds: +6600The Indianapolis Colts get the ninth and final bid despite trailing the Houston Texans (+2000) in the AFC South based mostly on strength of schedule and value. The Colts, currently riding a five-game winning streak, should be favored in three of the final five games, if not four of them. The way quarterback Andrew Luck has played, albeit with a less-than-stellar receiving corps, Indy could be a dangerous matchup for any defense.Alex Kolodziej is theScore's betting writer. Chiefs' Berry makes long-awaited return to practice
Help is on the way for the much-maligned Kansas City Chiefs defense, as star safety Eric Berry will practice Wednesday for the first time this season, head coach Andy Reid announced.Berry's dealt with a heel injury throughout the year, which is related to the Achilles tear he suffered in the 2017 season opener. The Chiefs' secondary has struggled mightily without him - Kansas City ranks 30th in total defense and 27th in scoring defense.Berry, 29, is a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro. Jaguars' Marrone has 'high level of concern' over Ramsey's Week 13 status
Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey seems to be at risk of missing Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts."I do have a high level of concern ... He’s got a legitimate thing that he’s dealing with," head coach Doug Marrone said Wednesday, according to Phillip Heilman of the Florida Times-Union.Ramsey suffered a knee injury in the Jaguars' Week 12 loss to the Buffalo Bills and wasn't able to practice Wednesday.Losing the All-Pro corner would be yet another big blow for a team already without suspended running back Leonard Fournette; Cody Kessler will be making his first start since 2016 in place of benched Blake Bortles. The Jaguars are fourth in the AFC South with a record of 3-8-0.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Roethlisberger: 'I've earned the right' to criticize teammates
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has earned a reputation for publicly calling out his teammates over a career that includes six Pro Bowls and two Super Bowl victories. The 15-year veteran believes his accomplishments and experience permit him to speak his mind."I think I have earned the right to be able to do that with as long as I have been here," Roethlisberger said Wednesday, according to Chris Adamski of TribLive.com. "I’ll just be just as critical of myself (in the media), as well."Roethlisberger criticized wide receivers Antonio Brown and James Washington for their route-running and drops during his weekly radio appearance in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. He also questioned offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner's play-calling on the Steelers' final drive. He maintains his remarks are designed only to bring out the best in his teammates and lead the Steelers to success, not hurt anyone's feelings."I would hope that they would understand that as the quarterback and the captain that I have the right to do those things. I don’t feel like I abuse that situation. So I don’t think it’s an issue, but you would have to ask them," said Roethlisberger. His comments seem to have the desired effect as the Steelers sit atop the AFC North at 7-3-1, while Roethlisberger ranks second among all quarterbacks with 3,664 passing yards.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bengals' Green says he'll play vs. Broncos
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green said he'll return from injury Sunday against the Denver Broncos, according to Fletcher Page of The Cincinnati Enquirer. The Bengals have lost all three games Green has missed due to a toe issue. He last played in Week 8, catching five of seven targets for 76 yards and one touchdown in a 37-34 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His return will be met by Jeff Driskel's first career start under center after Andy Dalton was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a thumb injury suffered in Week 12. Green isn't concerned about developing chemistry with the replacement quarterback."Just put the ball somewhere; I’ll get it," he said.Green has 45 catches for 687 yards and six touchdowns through eight games this season.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Michael Vick advises run-happy Lamar Jackson to 'proceed with caution'
Baltimore Ravens rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson is already setting records through his first two career starts, having racked up 37 carries for 190 yards on the ground. His hot start has drawn the attention of the NFL's all-time greatest dual-threat quarterback, Michael Vick, who offered up some advice to a player he can one day see breaking his own record for QB rushing yards."With quarterbacks, we're not used to getting hit all the time. When we do it, it can either get you into the game or it can shake you up a little bit," said Vick, according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN. "It's not like a guy sitting in the pocket, you run the risk of getting injured. I'm not saying that should deter Lamar or scare him; I'm just saying proceed with caution."Vick averaged just 6.1 rushing attempts per game over his 13-year career and totaled 6,109 yards and 36 touchdowns. The four-time Pro Bowler never topped 15 attempts in a single game and said he'd like to see Jackson cut down on his total carries to help preserve his body."Later on in my career, I did feel it more," said Vick. "It took a longer time for my legs to come back. Six-thousand yards are a lot, but I'm in the record books."Jackson is expected to make his third straight start in place of Joe Flacco on Sunday in Atlanta, where Vick spent the first six years of his career after being chosen with the No. 1 pick in the 2001 NFL Draft.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Jaguars' Fournette loses appeal, will miss Week 13 vs. Colts
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette lost the appeal of his one-game suspension and will miss Week 13 against the Indianapolis Colts, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Fournette was ejected from last week's contest against the Buffalo Bills for fighting with defensive end Shaq Lawson. The NFL ruled that Fournette violated the unsportsmanlike conduct and unnecessary roughness rules. Lawson was also ejected from the game, but no additional discipline has been announced for him.The sophomore back had rushed 18 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns prior to his departure. He has played just five games this season while missing time due to a hamstring injury.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Foster placed on commissioner's exempt list after waiver claim by Redskins
The Washington Redskins claimed former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster off waivers Tuesday, two days after he was released following a domestic violence arrest.Shortly after Washington's move became official, the NFL announced Foster has been placed on the commissioner's exempt list while the league reviews his matter. The measure, which the league has taken in the past with players like Greg Hardy and Adrian Peterson, means Foster can't attend games or practices.Saturday night's arrest at the 49ers' team hotel in Tampa Bay marked the third time Foster has been arrested this year. The first domestic violence charges against Foster were dropped in May after his ex-girlfriend, Elissa Ennis, recanted her claims. He was suspended for the first two games of this season after he pleaded no contest to a weapons possession misdemeanor.Redskins vice president of player personnel Doug Williams released a statement soon after the waiver claim, saying Foster will not be allowed to play until the legal process is complete.

The Baltimore Ravens plan to start Lamar Jackson at quarterback Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Joe Flacco had yet to be cleared from his hip injury as of Tuesday but Garafolo notes he could be in the coming days.Jackson earned victories over the Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders in the first two starts of his career. The rookie quarterback completed 14 of 25 passes in Week 12 for 178 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He added 71 rushing yards and a score on 11 carries. The dual-threat 21-year-old has the Ravens sitting in the AFC's No. 6 seed after losing three games in a row prior to their bye.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cowboys' Lawrence on upcoming battle with Saints: 'They ain't faced us'
Dallas Cowboys defensive end Demarcus Lawrence isn't afraid of the New Orleans Saints. The Cowboys will face their stiffest test of the season when they host the 10-1 Saints on Thursday, especially when it comes to rushing the passer. Quarterback Drew Brees has taken just 10 sacks in 2018 - the least among all current starters, per ESPN.Despite this, Lawrence isn't phased by his upcoming matchup with the Saints' offensive line."I don't know, (expletive) I got to see first," Lawrence said when asked whether New Orleans' blocking unit was the best he's faced all season, according to The Athletic's Calvin Watkins. "They ain't faced us. We don't know yet, we can talk about it afterwards. I'll be honest with you too."The star pass-rusher has amassed 8.5 sacks, one interception, and one forced fumble through 11 games this season. He's coming off his first Pro Bowl after leading the Cowboys' defense with 14.5 sacks in 2017."(Dallas' pass-rush has) been talked up as being the difference," Lawrence said. Roethlisberger: INTs come with 'go out and sling it' mentality

Fantasy: Waiver Wire - Week 13
Every Monday during the season, theScore's Justin Boone will run down the recommended waiver wire pickups.Ownership percentages are based on Yahoo leagues. FAAB bids are set off a $100 budget. Only players owned in less than 60 percent of leagues are considered.Fantasy Podcast: Week 12 takeaways, early look at waiver wireQuarterbacksJohn Grieshop / Getty Images Sport / GettyJameis Winston, BuccaneersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. CAR47%$4We've established that you can't trust Winston as a fantasy starter, but that doesn't mean you can't play him. The ceiling for the Bucs quarterback has been high all season, and we saw Winston deliver in Week 12 with 312 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 24 rushing yards. Most importantly, he didn't turn the ball over. Next up is another favorable matchup against a Panthers defense that's bottom 10 in fantasy points allowed to quarterbacks. Just know, while he might finish as the highest-scoring fantasy player in a given week, he also could be benched before halftime. That's the gamble with Jameis.Lamar Jackson, RavensNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat ATL42%$3A week after Jackson threw for 150 yards but ran 27 times for 117 yards, the Ravens clearly wanted their rookie quarterback to prove himself as a passer. Jackson only carried the ball twice in first half, but with the team needing a win, it unleashed him over the final two quarters, resulting in another solid fantasy day of 178 passing yards and one passing touchdown (but two picks), as well as 71 yards and a score on the ground. Joe Flacco is pushing to return to practice this week, which will force Baltimore to make a decision. Jackson still has a lot to learn, but he's given this offense a new dimension while helping kick-start the rushing attack. With an easy schedule moving forward, Jackson will be a borderline QB1 with plenty of upside - if he retains the starting job.Other options: Dak Prescott vs. NO (47 percent owned), Marcus Mariota vs. NYJ (32 percent owned), Case Keenum at CIN (16 percent owned)Running BacksIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyJosh Adams, EaglesNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. WAS55%$100Austin Ekeler (70 percent owned) and Gus Edwards (63 percent owned) don't make the 60 percent qualifier for this list, but surprisingly, Adams still does. After the coaching staff talked him up in consecutive weeks, Adams saw a season-high 22 carries, rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown. And to further drive home the fact that Adams is the lead back in Philly, head coach Doug Pederson said the team wants to get him even more work in future games. As it was mentioned in last week's waiver wire column, Adams is an RB2 the rest of the way. If he's still out there in your league, he's worth whatever you have left in your FAAB budget. With this being the final week of the regular season in most fantasy leagues, there's no reason to hold back your waiver dollars now.Justin Jackson, ChargersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat PIT1%$14With Melvin Gordon sidelined at least a few weeks with a Grade-2 MCL sprain, Jackson will have value playing alongside Ekeler. Since Ekeler is owned in most leagues, fantasy owners can pivot to Jackson, who ran the ball seven times for 57 yards on Sunday. The seventh-rounder was a workhorse in college and has a nice size-speed combination. He's capable of taking on as much as the Chargers want to give him, which could be a lot over the next month if Gordon remains out. A safe projection has the rookie averaging 7-12 touches and landing in the RB3/Flex range, though the opportunity is there for him to assume a larger role if he outplays Ekeler.Theo Riddick/LeGarrette Blount, LionsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. LAR51%/14%$14/$14A sprained knee kept Kerryon Johnson on the sidelines for the Thanksgiving Day game and allowed Blount to show he still had something left in the tank. The veteran rumbled through a tough Bears front, amassing 103 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. Riddick stayed active as a pass-catcher, totaling 60 yards. With Johnson's availability for this week and beyond still uncertain, Blount and Riddick are in the mix as RB3/Flex options. Riddick is the superior PPR play while Blount is the unquestioned goal-line back. If Johnson is inactive against the Rams, Riddick will have a busy day with the Lions trying to keep up with Sean McVay's high-powered offense.Nyheim Hines/Jordan Wilkins, ColtsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat JAX22%/4%$9/$7Marlon Mack is in the concussion protocol, leaving his status for Sunday's game up in the air. The Jaguars have been strong against the run, but they also just watched their playoffs hopes all but disappear with a loss to the Bills. Meanwhile, the Colts are surging and their offense won't be downgraded much by this matchup. It's possible Mack gets cleared in time to suit up, but if he doesn't, Hines and Wilkins will split snaps. Hines is the more dynamic weapon, though the Colts aren't likely to give him a massive touch count. Wilkins is a physical runner who was playing better recently before a lost fumble in Week 12. Much like Riddick and Blount, they'll be ranked as RB3/Flex plays.Frank Gore, DolphinsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. BUF25%$7Gore's upside is limited, but he's seeing a higher volume of touches than teammate Kenyan Drake has over the last month. That could be due to the shoulder injury Drake has been playing through. Head coach Adam Gase said Drake won't face contact in practice this week while they try to get him as healthy as possible for Sunday. As home favorites, the Dolphins have a chance to control the game against the Bills, which would improve Gore's fantasy outlook. He's not an exciting player to start, but if there was ever a week to use him, it's now.Rex Burkhead, PatriotsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. MIN18%$6Fresh off injured reserve, Burkhead returns to a Patriots backfield that seems to be set with Sony Michel as the main ball carrier and James White as the receiving threat. Burkhead could complicate that arrangement, but that's not why he's worth adding. Michel has dealt with a variety of injuries this year and was nearly forced from last week's game when he got bent in half by defenders. If the rookie's ailments get the best of him down the stretch, Burkhead would have league-winning potential.Carlos Hyde, JaguarsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. IND37%$3Leonard Fournette is facing a one-game suspension from the league for his role in the sideline fight during the Jaguars-Bills game. Fournette will likely appeal the suspension, so he might end up delaying or avoiding a ban entirely. If he is required to sit out, T.J. Yeldon (60 percent owned) would lead the backfield in touches as a borderline RB2, with Hyde serving in a complementary role. Unfortunately, with the injuries that have ravaged the Jaguars' offensive line, it'll be hard to have much confidence in Yeldon or Hyde.Other options: Malcolm Brown at DET (8 percent owned), Spencer Ware at OAK (8 percent owned), Jaylen Samuels vs. LAC (6 percent owned), Giovani Bernard vs. DEN (29 percent owned), Chris Thompson at PHI (44 percent owned), Doug Martin vs. KC (47 percent owned), Jalen Richard vs. KC (42 percent owned), Royce Freeman at CIN (52 percent owned), Elijah McGuire at TEN (14 percent owned), Rashaad Penny vs. SF (38 percent owned), Ty Montgomery at ATL (9 percent owned)Wide ReceiversIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyCourtland Sutton, BroncosNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat CIN54%$39Sutton is coming off a down week, but prior to that, he had 50 yards or a touchdown in seven straight games. His remaining schedule features the Bengals, 49ers, Browns, and Raiders. There's no reason for him to be on the free-agent market in your league.Josh Reynolds, RamsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat DET51%$24Reynolds is coming off bye, so people may have forgotten about his six-catch, 80-yard, one-touchdown performance in the Rams' shootout win over the Chiefs. It's a glimpse of what he can do the rest of the season while filling in for Cooper Kupp. The offense will continue to revolve around Todd Gurley, Robert Woods, and Brandin Cooks, but Reynolds and tight end Gerald Everett have the talent to be significant contributors, especially around the end zone.Chris Godwin/Adam Humphries, BuccaneersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. CAR44%/30%$17/$14DeSean Jackson is visiting a specialist to get a second opinion on his hand/thumb injury. That sounds ominous, considering we saw a similar situation play out with O.J. Howard before the tight end was placed on injured reserve. Humphries and Godwin are both intriguing pickups, but if Jackson misses time, their respective values skyrocket. Humphries has 76 yards or a touchdown in five of his last seven games and is proving himself as a worthwhile weekly WR3. Godwin's loaded potential can only be unlocked with more targets, and an injury to Jackson would help provide that.Tre'Quan Smith, SaintsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat DAL50%$14Smith wasn't able to follow up his 157-yard, one-touchdown game due to a foot injury that kept him off the field in Week 12. He was back at practice on Monday, which is a great sign for his availability heading into the Thursday nighter. The Cowboys' outside corners are a challenging matchup for Smith, but the speedster should benefit from the game being played in a dome, where Drew Brees tends to have the most success. Smith also has favorable opponents coming up in the Bucs, Panthers, and Steelers.Mike Williams, ChargersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat PIT41%$9Williams still isn't seeing a ton of volume, though that didn't stop him from hauling in a pair of touchdowns Sunday. He has 50 yards or a score on extremely limited targets in four of his last five games. He's a high-variance WR4 who has a breakout inside of him if Tyrell Williams' quad injury lingers or the Chargers decide to go more pass-heavy with Gordon sidelined.David Moore, SeahawksNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. SF10%$7Moore is another late-season breakout candidate after posting his best outing of the year - 104 yards and a touchdown against the Panthers. We saw Moore get hot in the middle of the season when he scored four times in a three-game span. The Seahawks' run-first offense will lead to volatility in their receivers' production, but Moore is another WR4 with a nose for the end zone.Other options: Anthony Miller at NYG (40 percent owned), Christian Kirk at GB (38 percent owned), Marquise Goodwin at SEA (47 percent owned), Josh Doctson at PHI (12 percent owned), Donte Moncrief vs. IND (18 percent owned), Dede Westbrook vs. IND (32 percent owned), Quincy Enunwa at TEN (9 percent owned), Trey Quinn at PHI (1 percent owned), Antonio Callaway at HOU (9 percent owned), Dante Pettis at SEA (1 percent owned), John Ross vs. DEN (10 percent owned), Robert Foster at MIA (0 percent owned), Ryan Switzer vs. LAC (0 percent owned)Tight EndsJohn McCoy / Getty Images Sport / GettyGerald Everett, RamsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat DET9%$9Many owners are in need of help at this position, as Jack Doyle became the latest tight end to be put on the shelf. Everett's outlook can be described in the same way his teammate Reynolds' was in the WR section. They're both big bodies with wide catch radiuses and heightened skills in the red zone. While Reynolds very nearly came away with a second touchdown in that Monday night heavyweight tilt, Everett accomplished the feat, finishing with 49 yards and the two trips over the goal line. We know it can sometimes take a year or two for tight ends to get acclimated to the pro game, and we might be seeing the emergence of a sophomore star in Everett. Consider him a fringe TE1 as we approach the fantasy playoffs.Matt LaCosse, BroncosNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat CIN0%$1Despite being no more than a streamer in fantasy, Jeff Heuerman was another tight end lost for the season after Week 12. With options limited, you could take a flier on LaCosse, who caught three of his four targets Sunday, racking up 34 yards and a touchdown. Heuerman was playing 77 percent of the Broncos' snaps, compared to around 50 percent for LaCosse. It's safe to assume LaCosse will get a bump in usage, giving him a chance to become a deeper streaming option.Other options: Jonnu Smith vs. NYJ (19 percent owned), Antonio Gates at PIT (4 percent owned), Mo Alie-Cox at JAX (0 percent owned), Chris Herndon at TEN (8 percent owned), Dan Arnold at DAL (0 percent owned), C.J. 5 situational betting tips for Week 13 of the NFL season
Need some help spotting situational edges with a new slate of NFL action fast approaching? We've got you covered. Here are five tips as you do your homework for Week 13.Falcons faltering vs. AFCWhether it's a lack of preparation, unfamiliarity, or just nine flips of a coin landing on the same side every time, the Atlanta Falcons can't figure out the AFC. A 28-16 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 10 means head coach Dan Quinn has failed to cover the spread against nine straight non-conference opponents. The competition hasn't been all too stiff, either - the Falcons lost outright to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4 and needed a comeback win over the New York Jets last year to avoid being swept by the AFC East. They host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday and will be short underdogs, looking to snap a three-game losing streak.Broncos in bad spot at BengalsAt first glance, the Denver Broncos have a favorable matchup on their hands against a banged-up Cincinnati Bengals team that's lost five of six. But the Broncos have struggled in Eastern Time during the early slate of games - a well-documented situation in our previous betting tips. Since head coach Vance Joseph took over in 2017, Denver's 0-7 straight up, 1-6 against the spread, and has allowed an average of more than 31 points in those games. The Broncos are laying four points on Sunday, the third time they've been favored in this scenario.Questionable price for PackersThe 4-6-1 Green Bay Packers are slumping, but they're still giving two-plus touchdowns at home against the 2-9 Arizona Cardinals. It's rare that a team with a winning percentage of 40 percent or worse is favored by double digits, but it's been a pretty fun fade. BetLabs found that teams in this situation are 15-28 against the spread (34.9 percent), meaning the Cardinals, as incompetent as they've looked this season, would be the play in this spot. Additionally, teams that are double-digit underdogs coming off a double-digit loss - Arizona fell by 35 last weekend to the Los Angeles Chargers - have been profitable in the past.Giants inconsistent against spreadThe New York Giants are consistently inconsistent. They've had trouble stringing together solid performances over the last few years, going 2-13-1 against the spread the week after covering the number. You'd have to go all the way back to Week 15 of the 2016 season to find the last time the Giants covered the spread in consecutive weeks. So, after coming through as 4.5-point underdogs in a 25-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, New York is ready for another letdown as another 4.5-point underdog against the Chicago Bears. It doesn't help that the Giants will be at home - where they've failed to cover five straight spreads - against a red-hot Bears team that's getting extra rest. Two angles oppose ChiefsAfter failing to cover the 14.5-point spread in a 26-14 win over the Cardinals in Week 10, Andy Reid fell to 1-5 against the spread as a double-digit favorite as head coach of the Chiefs. He's now laying 14.5 more points to the Oakland Raiders. We also mentioned last week that taking double-digit favorites playing teams out of conference has been profitable; on the contrary, double-digit favorites against conference opponents are covering well below the 50 percent mark.Alex Kolodziej is theScore's betting writer. Defensive Line All-Stars: A look back at Week 12's standouts
After another slate filled with sacks, stops and stuffs, let's break down the standout defensive linemen from Week 12:Defensive Lineman of the Week: DE Joey Bosa, ChargersJoey Bosa made his season debut in Week 11, but he wasn't truly back until Week 12, as the Los Angeles Chargers' star pass-rusher recorded five tackles, two quarterback hits, and two sacks against the Arizona Cardinals. When healthy, Bosa might be the best young edge defender in the NFL, with the ability to dominate against the run and pass. He possesses silky-smooth footwork that he pairs with active, accurate hands. All of that was on full display against the Cardinals:Here, Bosa's lined up with an outside shade over Cardinals right tackle Andre Smith. As soon as the ball is snapped, he explodes out of his stance and pushes vertical as he attempts to race Smith up the edge.Once he gets within striking distance, Bosa quickly bobs inside, drawing out Smith's strike, which he counters beautifully with a two-hand swipe that effectively shortens the corner and allows him to start flattening to the quarterback. From there, Bosa brings down Josh Rosen for the sack.Bosa wasn't done there, recording another sack while showcasing his impressive hand technique to shorten the corner:On this play, Bosa's once again aligned with an outside shade over Smith. After the ball is snapped, Bosa veers slightly outside before turning his hips toward the pocket. This gives him a more favorable angle of entry into his pass rush because it puts the quarterback in his direct path.Once he gets within distance, Bosa executes a well-timed long arm with his inside arm. That creates the separation needed to flatten to the quarterback while executing a forklift move with his outside hand, which clears the right tackle's point of contact, effectively shortening the edge. From there, Bosa maintains his momentum despite some ancillary contact from Smith (who was released following the game) and brings down Rosen. The Chargers were already one of the best teams in the AFC without Bosa, but his presence should give them a real shot to make some noise in the playoffs.Pass Rush of the Week: DE Myles Garrett, BrownsFor this week's "Pass Rush of the Week," let's break down the speed rush Myles Garrett used to record his fourth-quarter sack against the Cincinnati Bengals:Here, Garrett's aligned with an outside shade over Bengals left tackle Cordy Glenn. As soon as the ball's snapped, Garrett explodes upfield, forcing Glenn to prematurely turn his shoulders perpendicular to the line of scrimmage to try and keep up, which gives Garrett a soft edge to the quarterback. In three steps, Garrett's already gobbled up 5 yards, and once he starts to turn his hips to align with the quarterback, he reduces his inside shoulder, effectively limiting his blockable surface area. From there, Garrett's stride length and frequency allow him to absorb the contact without it affecting his momentum or his path to the quarterback.Once the QB hits the top of his drop, Garrett's already within a step, allowing him to record the sack. It's simple, yet almost impossible to stop.In his second season, Garrett's not the most refined pass-rusher and doesn’t have a ton of moves in his repertoire. However, his speed rush - when executed well - is already one of the best trump cards in the NFL.Run Defender of the Week: DT Vita Vea, BuccaneersVita Vea was the 12th overall selection in the spring, and he's starting to realize his potential after a pesky calf injury took away his training camp and preseason.Against the San Francisco 49ers, Vea had the best game of his short career, recording four tackles and a sack. His best work came against the run, as he controlled and penetrated his gap to make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Here's one of them:Here, Vea's aligned directly over 49ers center Weston Richburg. The Niners are attempting to execute an outside zone play, where the goal is to horizontally stretch the front side of Tampa Bay’s defense in hopes of creating an open crease for the running back. But Vea has other plans. He outpaces right guard Mike Person's attempted reach block - meant to force him inside - and bullies his way into the backfield for the tackle. Not many 347-pound men have the quickness to penetrate and make a tackle just as the running back receives the ball, but that's exactly what Vea does here. It's a huge reason why Tampa Bay spent its first-round pick on him.In the Spotlight: LB Matt Judon, Baltimore RavensIn the fourth quarter against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday, Matt Judon recorded three sacks on three straight snaps. Incredibly, that doubled his combined total from the first 10 games of the season. And Judon was simply dominant on all three sacks, which came against Raiders right tackle Brandon Parker. On his first, Judon leveraged a quick get-off and a powerful rip move to beat Parker on his way to sacking Derek Carr. The sack even forced a fumble that was picked up and run back for a touchdown by teammate Terrell Suggs.Judon then used the exact same move to beat Parker on each of the next two plays. Here's a look at his third sack:Here, Judon begins in a two-point stance aligned with an outside shade over Parker. After the ball's snapped, he does a great job of selling the speed rush while getting his hips square to Parker, giving himself options on either side of the tackle.Once he gets within distance, Judon places his inside hand on the inside shoulder of Parker while allowing the tackle to attain inside placement with his inside arm. Then, with Parker’s momentum pulling him upfield, Judon rotates his shoulders - making it difficult for the tackle to latch on - while pulling on Parker's inside shoulder. This breaks the tackle's grip and gives Judon a wide-open lane to the inside for the sack. The Ravens are looking for their next premier pass-rusher as Suggs enters the twilight of his career. At 6-foot-3 and 261 pounds, the 26-year-old Judon possesses the necessary frame and athleticism to be that guy - he just needs to become more consistent. Perhaps this big game will jump-start a stellar closing stretch of the season.John Owning is a football writer at theScore. He has written for Bleacher Report and Football Insiders. Coughlin: Jaguars have a lot of issues to address
Jacksonville Jaguars VP of football operations Tom Coughlin says his team's 2018 struggles stem from the defense to the team's attitude on the field."I'll put the gloves on with anybody that wants to talk about what - let's face it, our numbers are down all over the place," Coughlin said on 1010 XL radio, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "Our sacks are way down. Our pressure is down, our turnovers are huge, they're out of sight. Our penalties, the way that we behave on the field is ridiculous, some of the penalties. So there's a lot of things that are going to get addressed, and are being addressed."The Jaguars were active in free agency last offseason, most notably signing guard Andrew Norwell and wide receiver Donte Moncrief. They're now 3-8 through 12 weeks and sit fourth in the AFC South amid a seven-game losing streak. They're allowing 5.3 more points per game and scoring 8.2 fewer than they did last season. Only two teams have a worse turnover differential than Jacksonville's minus-11.Head coach Doug Marrone and the Jaguars started making changes on Monday with the firing of offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and benching of quarterback Blake Bortles in favor of Cody Kessler.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. Le'Veon Bell teases his desire to join Colts: 'Just imagine'
Pending free-agent running back Le'Veon Bell seems to have his eyes set on striking a deal with the Indianapolis Colts in the offseason, according to a comment he left on the NFL's Instagram account.Bell commented on a post shared of quarterback Andrew Luck and his stat lines over the past eight games in which he's thrown for 2,450 yards and 27 touchdowns, writing "just imagine" with three eye emojis.
Report: Winston reaches settlement with Uber driver over lawsuit
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston reached a settlement with an Arizona Uber driver over the sexual battery lawsuit filed against him, according to Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times.Winston was suspended for the first three games of the 2018 season due to a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy after the league investigated a November 2017 incident in which a female driver told police the quarterback had groped her in her car in March 2016.The woman, known as Kate P., filed a civil suit in September seeking more than $75,000 in damages.A joint notice of settlement filed in federal court Monday read that the driver "reached an agreement" with Winston to resolve her claim. Terms were not disclosed and the U.S. District Court for Arizona will need about 10 days to finalize the agreement. This is the second sexual battery lawsuit Winston has settled. He and Erica Kinsman agreed to dismiss a suit in December 2016 wherein Winston was accused of rape while both were students at Florida State.Winston and his agents parted ways over the summer and he was removed from murals at the Buccaneers' stadium. Meanwhile, Nike didn't renew its contract with the quarterback. The 24-year-old has had a tumultuous fourth season. He's made just four starts while appearing in six games, throwing 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The fifth-year option of Winston's rookie contract is worth a cap hit of $20.9 million for 2019, but it's only guaranteed in the event of injury.Copyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Power Rankings - Week 13: Seahawks reach top 10, Bengals plummet
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors, including Mike Alessandrini, Jack Browne, Michael McClymont, and Arun Srinivasan.1. New Orleans Saints (10-1)Previous Rank: 1It's not even December, but New Orleans can clinch a playoff berth on Thursday with a win over the Cowboys. - McClymont2. Los Angeles Rams (10-1)Previous Rank: 2Aqib Talib's imminent return from IR should help a Rams defense that's allowed an average of 42.3 points over its last three games. - Alessandrini3. Kansas City Chiefs (9-2)Previous Rank: 3Patrick Mahomes and KC's high-flying offense were on a bye in Week 12, briefly sparing the rest of the league. - Alessandrini4. New England Patriots (8-3)Previous Rank: 5Sony Michel shook off an injury scare to record a 133-yard, two-touchdown performance as the Patriots rolled over the Jets. They're not dominating the headlines, but look out for Tom Brady and Co. - Srinivasan5. Los Angeles Chargers (8-3)Previous Rank: 6Here's hoping Melvin Gordon - the heartbeat of the Bolts' offense - can return before the end of the regular season and continue his incredibly productive campaign. - Alessandrini6. Chicago Bears (8-3)Previous Rank: 8Ryan Pace should be firmly in the conversation for GM of the Year after building a roster that can lose its starting quarterback on a short week and keep on winning. - Browne7. Houston Texans (8-3)Previous Rank: 7Eight straight victories after an 0-3 start is an incredible feat. At this point, the Texans are looking to host a playoff game. - McClymont8. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3-1)Previous Rank: 4Once again, Pittsburgh played down to its opponent, losing to Denver and handing New England the inside track to home-field advantage in the AFC. - Browne9. Minnesota Vikings (6-4-1)Previous Rank: 10They won't say it, but killing the Packers' season must have felt so good. Next, Mike Zimmer's squad will look to hunt down Chicago. - Browne10. Seattle Seahawks (6-5)Previous Rank: 11It appears that writing the Seahawks off prior to the season was premature. This team is squarely in the playoff hunt, and Pete Carroll deserves a ton of credit. - Alessandrini11. Carolina Panthers (6-5)Previous Rank: 9The Panthers have lost three straight games at an inopportune time and must fix their defense to reach the playoffs. - McClymont12. Indianapolis Colts (6-5)Previous Rank: 12Nobody wants to face the Colts, who are brimming with so much confidence right now that they're using their franchise quarterback with a rebuilt shoulder as a wideout on trick plays. - McClymont13. Dallas Cowboys (6-5)Previous Rank: 16The Cowboys are thankful for the Amari Cooper trade, which - after drawing much derision - appears to be paying dividends with the 24-year-old thriving in his new offense. - Srinivasan14. Baltimore Ravens (6-5)Previous Rank: 15Baltimore's impending choice between Joe Flacco and Lamar Jackson under center is the biggest remaining wild-card factor in the AFC. - Browne15. Philadelphia Eagles (5-6)Previous Rank: 19Contrary to popular belief, the defending champs aren't dead in the water just yet. However, they'll need to be more consistent to usurp the Cowboys and Redskins in the NFC East. - Srinivasan16. Washington Redskins (6-5)Previous Rank: 13It's unfair to expect a carbon copy of Alex Smith, but Colt McCoy must curb his costly picks for the Redskins to survive in the playoff race. - Srinivasan17. Green Bay Packers (4-6-1)Previous Rank: 17Green Bay's mathematically alive in the NFC, but it's probably time to look ahead and consider major changes for 2019. - Browne18. Denver Broncos (5-6)Previous Rank: 22Don’t look now, but Vance Joseph's squad has won two straight games and will face the hurting Bengals before the struggling 49ers. A playoff berth isn't out of the question. - Alessandrini19. Tennessee Titans (5-6)Previous Rank: 18Memo to the Titans: Consider using your 250-pound back in key 4th-and-short situations. - McClymont20. Cleveland Browns (4-6-1)Previous Rank: 24Cleveland continues to provide the league's juiciest drama, and Baker's snub of Hue could be hard to top. - Browne21. Cincinnati Bengals (5-6)Previous Rank: 14Andy Dalton - who's done for 2018 - can be cut in the offseason with no cap hit. Jeff Driskel might be auditioning for the 2019 starting job. - Browne22. Miami Dolphins (5-6)Previous Rank: 20Ryan Tannehill submitted an efficient performance against Indy, but it wasn't enough for the Dolphins, who appear to be sinking at the worst time. - Srinivasan23. Atlanta Falcons (4-7)Previous Rank: 21Dan Quinn got the ol' vote of confidence from Falcons owner Arthur Blank - the surest sign that a season is going badly. McClymont24. Buffalo Bills (4-7)Previous Rank: 27Josh Allen showed off his rocket arm while silencing Jalen Ramsey, perhaps once and for all. The Bills could close out the year on an unexpectedly positive note. - Srinivasan25. Detroit Lions (4-7)Previous Rank: 23Marvin Jones is finished for the year, which couldn't come at worse time for Matt Stafford, whose future in Detroit is - rightfully - being questioned. - Browne26. New York Giants (3-8)Previous Rank: 26Odell Beckham Jr. scrutinized the Giants' offensive game plan again after dropping another winnable contest. You have to feel for the uber-talented star at this point. - Srinivasan27. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-8)Previous Rank: 25The Jaguars haven't won a game since September. Let's hope they've been scouting college QBs. - McClymont28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-7)Previous Rank: 28The Bucs' defense somehow held a team under 10 points. That team was the Nick Mullens-led Niners, but still. - McClymont29. New York Jets (3-8)Previous Rank: 29Remember when the 3-3 Jets were promising and full of life? Yeah, neither do we. - Srinivasan30. San Francisco 49ers (2-9)Previous Rank: 30The Mullens magic has worn off, and Niners fans are surely counting down the days until 2019. - Alessandrini31. Oakland Raiders (2-9)Previous Rank: 31His offensive weapons resemble that of an unranked college team, but Derek Carr hasn't played nearly well enough to instill confidence for next year. - Alessandrini32. Arizona Cardinals (2-9)Previous Rank: 32New OC, same result. Arizona's averaged fewer than 16 points per game since Byron Leftwich took over the offense. - AlessandriniCopyright © 2018 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
