Report: Fitzpatrick to have season-ending hip surgery
Washington Football Team quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his hip and miss the remainder of the season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Fitzpatrick sustained the injury in Week 1 and has been sidelined ever since, pushing Taylor Heinicke into the starting lineup.Heinicke has played inconsistently in his first action as an NFL starter, but he's led the NFC East club to four straight wins to improve their record to 6-6 and put them back into the playoff hunt. The 39-year-old Fitzpatrick signed a one-year deal with Washington this past offseason after engineering a late-career renaissance over a pair of two-year stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins.Fitzpatrick said in March that he'd consider retiring if he couldn't earn a starting role or at least a chance to compete for a No. 1 job.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bills' McDermott downplays Belichick's impact in 'sloppy' loss to Patriots
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick turned back the clock with his game plan for a windy Monday night matchup with the Buffalo Bills, running the ball 46 times and throwing just three passes to secure a vital 14-10 win.But Bills head coach Sean McDermott believes his team beat themselves rather than fell victim to a masterclass from the six-time Super Bowl champion."Let's not give more credit than we need to give credit to Bill Belichick in this one," said McDermott, according to NESN's Dakota Randall. "Whether it was Bill or anybody else, they beat us, right? But you sit here and you tell me when we start with an average starting field position of the 40-yard line and he starts with the 23-yard line - I'm rounding up in both cases - and we were 1-for-4 in the red zone, and they were 0-for-1 in the red zone. You give me that ahead of time, I'd say I like my chances. I like my chances."I don't think, with all due respect, it's not a Bill Belichick-type thing. It's what are you doing with the opportunities you got? ... We turned the ball over on the plus-30-something-yard line. Sloppy football; sloppy football. I'm very comfortable in that situation."While Mac Jones was essentially a bystander in the prime-time matchup, the Bills asked Josh Allen to throw 30 times. The Buffalo quarterback had his chance to steal the victory but couldn't connect with tight end Dawson Knox for the go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes. The Patriots ended the game with 222 yards and one touchdown on the ground, which marked the second time in three weeks that the Bills' defense allowed a 200-yard rushing day, following a dominant performance from the Indianapolis Colts and Jonathan Taylor in Week 11.Buffalo was also unable to establish its own running game to ease the pressure off Allen in the difficult weather conditions, producing 99 total rushing yards - with 39 coming from the quarterback.New England moved to 9-4 with the win, claiming the No. 1 spot in the AFC and further strengthening its position in the division. Buffalo fell to 7-5 and has now lost three of its last five games.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Jones throws 3 passes in Patriots' windy MNF victory over Bills
The New England Patriots defeated the Buffalo Bills 14-10 in a game during which Mac Jones attempted just three passes - completing two - because of extreme winds. The Patriots recorded a whopping 46 rush attempts in the Monday Night Football victory, which put them 1.5 games up on the Bills for the top spot in the AFC East."We played the way we felt like we needed to play to win," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said after the game.Jones threw for 19 yards. The Patriots threw the fewest passes in a game since 1974, when the Bills beat the New York Jets by throwing twice. They tied their franchise record with two completions and set a new franchise record for the fewest passes in a game.Jones threw his lone first-half pass to Jonnu Smith, who picked up 12 yards late in the first quarter. The Patriots became the only team since 1978 to attempt one pass in the first half. Jones' other completion came in the fourth quarter on a screen to Brandon Bolden and went for seven yards."I haven't seen that much wind, probably ever, but it's a learning experience," Jones said. With Belichick reluctant to let his rookie quarterback test the elements, Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson carried most of the load offensively. Harris scored on a 64-yard run in the first quarter but later left with a hamstring injury."What a memorable game that will be for me in my career," said Patriots center David Andrews, according to NFL Network's Mike Giardi. On the other side, the Bills let Josh Allen throw 30 times. He completed half of his attempts for 145 yards and a touchdown. He nearly threw a go-ahead touchdown at the two-minute warning, but Dawson Knox couldn't corral the ball in the end zone after Allen scrambled in the pocket to buy time. The Patriots will take a 9-4 record into their bye week. They'll face the Bills again in Week 16 with the rematch in New England.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Report: Giants' Jones likely to miss 2nd straight game with neck injury
Daniel Jones will likely miss the New York Giants' Week 14 game against the Los Angeles Chargers due to a neck injury, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The ailment also sidelined Jones last week.Mike Glennon replaced Jones in Sunday's 20-9 loss to the Miami Dolphins but suffered a concussion. As a result, second-year passer Jake Fromm is in line to take first-team snaps in practice this week, head coach Joe Judge said Monday, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. Fromm could also start this Sunday. In addition to Fromm, New York's quarterback depth chart features Brian Lewerke, who's currently on the practice squad. The Giants' offense has struggled this season under both Jones and Glennon. Jones has won four of his 11 starts and posted an 84.8 passer rating, while Glennon led New York to its season low in scoring versus Miami.Fromm signed with the Giants on Nov. 30 after beginning the season on the Buffalo Bills' practice squad.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Patriots-Bills best bets: Can Belichick work magic in Buffalo?
First place in the AFC East is up for grabs Monday night as the Buffalo Bills host the red-hot New England Patriots for the teams' first of two meetings this season. Here's how we're betting Pats-Bills:C Jackson Cowart: Patriots +3 (-120)If you take this line at face value, it suggests that oddsmakers see these teams as near-equals, if not a slight lean to the Bills. What exactly supports that thesis? The Patriots have a better record than Buffalo with a better point differential despite facing a tougher schedule thus far. They also rank higher by DVOA (No. 2 vs. No. 3) and PFF grades (No. 1 vs No. 9), plus they've boasted football's best scoring offense (35.2 PPG) and defense (10.5) since Week 7.Mac Jones also owns the best passer rating (106.4) of any starter in that stretch, and he'll have the upper hand against a Bills secondary that's gone from dangerous to dangerously thin after losing All-Pro corner Tre'Davious White to a season-ending injury. Perception dies hard in the NFL, but Buffalo, which isn't the AFC East juggernaut that it once was, will be fortunate to win outright Monday.Alex Moretto: Under 42This number has ticked down but is still playable at the current number. Both teams are playing well and looking to make a statement in a wide-open AFC, though neither has been tested much of late. On offense, the Patriots grow more impressive by the week while the Bills pack some real explosiveness. But it's the two defenses I trust more in this marquee showdown for the top spot in the AFC East. The loss of Tre'Davious White is big against an underrated New England passing attack, but Sean McDermott's defense has built up plenty of big-game experience and has had extra time to prepare. This is the most hostile environment Mac Jones has played in, and since the Bills should be able to key in on the run thanks to the weather, I don't expect New England to score much.Bill Belichick's defense is also playing lights out and will make life difficult on turnover-prone Josh Allen and this one-dimensional Bills offense. Perhaps Buffalo chips away with an effective short passing game to open up some deep shots, but either way, it won't be enough to push this over. Add in likely kicking troubles given the strong winds, and points will be at a premium in what should be a fascinating encounter.Matt Russell: Bills -3 (+100)This matchup, the teams' first of two in three weeks, is more important to the Bills than it is to the Patriots. Buffalo needs to hold serve at home, while the Patriots can settle for a split. New England is getting a ton of credit for a win and cover streak that's up to six games, but pulling this number down to a field goal, when I still have this game lined over the key number, is too much of an adjustment.Additionally, Jones will get his first feel of a hyped Bills Mafia, while Buffalo will have any game against Belichick's Patriots circled on their calendar. The last time the Bills were fully focused on a critical game? Their trip to Kansas City earlier this season, which got everyone buying into them.Between a defense with something to prove and an offense that's adjusted personnel, lay the short price with the Bills and be ready for Bill's revenge in two weeks.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ravens' Humphrey to miss rest of season with torn pec
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn pectoral in Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach John Harbaugh announced Monday.Humphrey was one of two Pro Bowl cornerbacks on the Ravens coming into the season. The other, Marcus Peters, tore his ACL before Week 1. Anthony Averett, Jimmy Smith, and Tavon Young head the rest of the depth chart.Humphrey entered Week 13 leading the Ravens with 13 pass breakups. He also had one interception, a forced fumble, and 55 tackles. Humphrey's been one of the NFL's top corners since 2019, with Baltimore deploying him on the perimeter and in the slot depending on specific matchups. The Ravens lost to the Steelers after failing on a two-point conversion attempt, opting to go for the win rather than force overtime. Harbaugh said Baltimore's cornerback situation contributed to his decision to have the offense try to win the game.Despite the loss, the Ravens still sit atop the AFC North at 8-4. Texans head coach David Culley declined to comment on Taylor's status as Houston's starter postgame, telling reporters he would "evaluate everything" following the 31-0 loss, according to ESPN's Sarah Barshop. Both quarterbacks struggled against the Colts. Mills completed just 6 of his 14 attempts while Taylor went 5-of-13 passing. The Texans are 2-4 in Taylor's six starts this season, with the 32-year-old throwing for five touchdowns to five interceptions. 10 takeaways from NFL Week 13
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines the significance of them moving forward.Cardinals first to 10 Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyWith Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins back from injuries for the first time since Week 8, the Arizona Cardinals flew into Chicago and rag-dolled the Bears. And, atop the top-heavy NFC standings, the Cardinals became the league's first team to win 10 games. At this point, a lot would have to go wrong for them to miss the postseason: Their playoff odds are now greater than 99%.Murray and Hopkins connected on a touchdown, but they didn't have to do a whole lot because Arizona's defense continues to dazzle. The Cardinals picked off Andy Dalton four times, with all four takeaways setting Arizona up inside Chicago's 30-yard line and resulting in 23 points. It's a pattern, too: The Cardinals entered Week 13 plus-8 in turnover differential, and their defense is ranked third in DVOA and second in EPA/play.Believe it or not, Arizona can all but put away the NFC West by winning next Monday night's home game against the Los Angeles Rams.Minshew mania in Philly?Gardner Minshew started for the injured Jalen Hurts and led touchdown drives on the Philadelphia Eagles' first three possessions while also completing his first 11 passes. Who cares that it came against the weak-sauce New York Jets. It still counts.Minshew cooled down a bit in the second half when the Eagles were much more content to run the ball and protect their lead. He still finished with an outstanding EPA/dropback of 0.61 and a 63% success rate on dropbacks. Can anyone else believe the Jacksonville Jaguars traded him for just a sixth-round pick? The Eagles have won four of six to pull within a half-game of the Washington Football Team for the NFC's last playoff spot. They also still have to play Washington twice. However, their bye comes next week, which leaves plenty of time for Philly's typically calm, measured fan base to have a good-faith, reasonable discussion about whether Hurts or Minshew should start going forward.Lions win! Rey Del Rio / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Detroit Lions have spent the season playing hard while finding creative ways to lose, even for them. But just when it looked like the Lions had drawn up another way to gag away a fourth-quarter lead to remain winless, they found a way to beat the Minnesota Vikings at the buzzer.Detroit had lost five one-score games and tied another. The Lions were ahead 20-6 in this one, and after Minnesota got within 23-21, Detroit justifiably went for it on fourth-and-1 from its own 28 with four minutes to go. However, Jared Goff got strip-sacked, which seemed appropriate. The Vikings took the lead two minutes later.Even after somehow taking a delay-of-game penalty on third-and-1 from the Minnesota 24 with 23 seconds left, the Lions got it done. Sure, the Vikings helped the cause (more on that in a bit), but a win is a win, and Detroit earned one. Pay no mind to the Lions' remaining schedule. Just savor this one, Lions fans. You deserve to experience some joy.The Vikings blew it, and this one's going to stingAstoundingly, Minnesota has played 11 one-score games this season, including all seven of its losses. But biffing a lead against the winless Lions - and doing it like that - takes the cake. The Vikings allowed Goff to march Detroit 75 yards on 14 plays in the final 1:50 with zero timeouts. And they did it by playing a lot of soft coverage that gave the Lions' pass-catchers a huge cushion at the snap, including on the game-winner. Look where cornerback Cameron Dantzler and safety Xavier Woods were after the ball was in the air: I mean, it's fine that the Vikings wanted to defend the goal line, and Dantzler clearly was playing outside leverage in case Amon-Ra St. Brown broke outside. But Woods was on his heels back by the end line, for some reason, until it was way too late.It was a colossal screwup, and if head coach Mike Zimmer gets fired after the season, this game - and that play - will best summarize why.Maybe the Steelers aren't dead yet? Joe Sargent / Getty Images Sport / GettyOne day after an ESPN report that suggested this will be Ben Roethlisberger's final season, the reeling, left-for-dead Steelers climbed back into the AFC North chase by coming from behind and holding off the rival Baltimore Ravens in a thriller.Credit where it's due: After scuffling for most of the game, the creaky, over-the-hill Roethlisberger went 9-for-10 for 129 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, leading the Steelers to 17 of their 20 points. It was his 51st game-winning drive, which ties him with Tom Brady for third-most all time, and his 39th fourth-quarter comeback, which ranks third all time behind Peyton Manning and Brady.Of course, this would've been a loss had the Ravens converted a two-point conversion with 16 seconds to go. But Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt - who finished with 3.5 sacks and six quarterback hits to again assume the league's lead in sacks despite missing 2.5 games with injuries - rushed Lamar Jackson into making an errant throw to a wide-open Mark Andrews. Watt finished with an astounding 12 pressures on 32 pass-rush snaps, per Next Gen Stats. This is why he's the highest-paid defensive player in the game.Pittsburgh is still on the outside of the AFC playoff picture, but it's also just 1.5 games behind the Ravens for first place in the AFC North. Given the way the Steelers' up-and-down season has unfolded, that sounds about right. Thursday night's visit to the Vikings is a huge game for both teams.Chargers, Bengals stay inconsistentThe Los Angeles Chargers-Cincinnati Bengals game Sunday was a lot like that Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man meme come to life. The Chargers jumped to a 24-0 lead, only to have the Bengals pull within 24-22 and drive into L.A. territory. Then, Joe Mixon fumbled and Tevaughn Campbell returned it for a 61-yard touchdown that kick-started a 17-0 Chargers run to end the game. All of this was one week after L.A. couldn't get out of its own way against the meh Denver Broncos while the Bengals kicked dirt on what seemed like a lifeless Steelers team.L.A. and Cincy are 7-5 and positioned for the final two playoff spots in the AFC, with the Chargers now holding the tiebreaker. Tune in next week when the Chargers host the Giants and the Bengals play the 49ers at home. Anything could happen!Dolphins win again Michael Reaves / Getty Images Sport / GettyMake it five straight victories for the Miami Dolphins after a 1-7 start, this one a slow stifling of the hapless New York Giants. Something to keep in mind: Miami's defense was ranked 26th in DVOA after Week 8; the Dolphins haven't allowed more than 17 points in a game since.OK, fine, the combined record of Miami's five opponents during its streak is 22-38, but the Dolphins didn't create the schedule. All they have to do is beat their opponents, and they're doing that. They now get a bye before facing the Jets at home and the New Orleans Saints on the road. That means an 8-7 record is possible before Miami ends the season by visiting the Tennessee Titans and hosting the New England Patriots.Panthers make news on their byeThe mess the Carolina Panthers have created at quarterback the last two years has found another scapegoat. Shortly after 1 p.m. ET Sunday - just as the attention of the football world turned toward the day's games - the Panthers announced they'd fired offensive coordinator Joe Brady.Maybe Brady wasn't the best fit - Teddy Bridgewater suggested as much in an interview last spring - but it's also pretty clear that Carolina has made one wrong personnel move after another at the quarterback position since the team hired head coach Matt Rhule before the 2020 season. At this point, it's pretty clear that Rhule and general manager Scott Fitterer have run out of people to blame.Colts seem satisfied with Wentz Carmen Mandato / Getty Images Sport / GettyIn the Indianapolis Colts' easy win over the Houston Texans, Carson Wentz probably cleared the 75% snap threshold, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, meaning the Colts will have to send the Eagles their 2022 first-round pick. And Indy seems to be fine with that.Wentz is by no means having a great season, but he's been a capable steward of the offense head coach Frank Reich has built for him, allowing Wentz to minimize the ghastly turnovers that so often haunted him in Philly.Heading into their bye, the Colts are now on a 6-2 stretch after a 1-4 start. Coming out of that bye, they host the Patriots before playing at the Cardinals, a two-game span their season could hinge upon.A not-so-good note about Trevor LawrenceTrevor Lawrence was drafted to be the fulcrum for the Jaguars' massive reclamation project. Now, head coach Urban Meyer has stepped on a rake a bunch of times, and the roster still needs a ton of reinforcements. Much of that was to be expected during Lawrence's rookie year. But what about Lawrence's future? The Jags got steamrolled by the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, and Lawrence has now thrown just one touchdown pass in his last five games. It's not all on him, of course, but a strong surrounding environment can go a long way in helping a quarterback establish success (see: Jones, Mac). It's too soon to worry about Lawrence, but it's also fair to start thinking about whether his circumstances will help him improve or completely consume him.Dom Cosentino is a senior feature writer at theScore.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Washington Football Team tight end Logan Thomas will undergo tests to confirm suspected season-ending ACL and MCL tears, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Thomas was ruled out with a knee injury Sunday versus the Las Vegas Raiders shortly after exiting the game. The 30-year-old was returning from a seven-game absence caused by a hamstring injury.Thomas was a key contributor last season in Washington's run to the NFC East title. Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen didn't finish Sunday's 29-27 loss to the Detroit Lions due to a sprained ankle, head coach Mike Zimmer said postgame, according to Chris Tomasson of The St. Paul Pioneer Press.Thielen's sprain is of the high ankle variety, and he'll undergo tests to determine a potential timeline for his return, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Burrow expects to play through dislocated pinkie finger
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow doesn't think he'll miss any time after dislocating his pinkie finger in Sunday's 41-22 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers."It's just something I'm going to have to deal with," Burrow said postgame, according to ESPN's Ben Baby. "I'm not going to miss any games because of it. That's not something that's going to happen."Burrow explained that he suffered the injury on the team's first drive after taking a sack, per Baby. The quarterback remained in the game as the training staff attempted to tape up his finger and offer him gloves, though Burrow eventually ditched both remedies."It's just something I have to play through," Burrow said. "That's what football is. You gotta play through some injuries sometimes."The 24-year-old finished with 300 yards passing but threw two interceptions and was sacked six times in the loss. He added two total touchdowns, with one coming on the ground. The loss marked the end of a two-game winning streak for the Bengals and dropped the club to 7-5. Cincinnati head coach Luke Fickell is expected to be in the mix for NFL jobs next year, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. It's unclear whether Fickell will be interested in leaving the Bearcats after a historic 2021 campaign with the school, Pelissero notes. The 48-year-old reportedly spoke with the Detroit Lions last year after they fired head coach Matt Patricia. Detroit ended up hiring Dan Campbell on a six-year contract.Fickell's done a tremendous job since joining Cincinnati in 2017, leading the club to a 48-14 record. Los Angeles Rams running back Darrell Henderson and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. are active for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars despite hip and thigh injuries, respectively. However, Sony Michel is expected to lead the Rams' backfield, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.Beckham was listed as questionable, as his status earlier in the week was reportedly "up in the air." But the veteran will likely take on a bigger role in his third outing for Los Angeles after joining the team in mid-November.Beckham snagged his first touchdown for L.A. and produced 81 yards during a loss to the Green Bay Packers last week. The NFC West club is seeking to snap a three-game losing streak at home in Week 13.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Panthers fire OC Joe Brady
The Carolina Panthers parted ways with offensive coordinator Joe Brady, the team announced Sunday."I met with Joe this morning and informed him that I have decided to make a change," head coach Matt Rhule said in a statement. "I'm very grateful to him for his time and effort in helping us get established over this past year and a half."Brady joined the Panthers in 2020 after one season at LSU. The 32-year-old generated interest from multiple teams looking for a head coach this past offseason. He had five head coaching interviews in January before agreeing to return to the Panthers.Carolina's offense has struggled since Brady's arrival, averaging fewer than 22 points per game. The Panthers rank in the bottom 10 in scoring this season with only 19.7 points per contest. The Panthers are using their third different starting quarterback this campaign in Cam Newton. Carolina began the season with Sam Darnold under center, but he struggled on the field before suffering a shoulder injury. P.J. Walker has also logged one start.Brady wasn't able to utilize star running back Christian McCaffrey through most of his tenure in Carolina. Report: NFL salary cap expected to jump to $208.2M in 2022
The NFL's salary cap is set to get back on track in 2022.Next season's cap is expected to reach the $208.2-million maximum agreed upon by the NFL and NFLPA in May, sources told Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The league reportedly will officially set the number next week at the annual labor seminar. The salary cap dropped from $198.2 million in 2020 to $182.5 million this season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. But with the league and union agreeing to spread the likely multibillion-dollar revenue shortfall over several years, the 2022 cap will be able to return to near its projected trajectory from before the pandemic. The NFL bolstered its finances by finalizing TV deals, avoiding COVID-19-related cancellations of games so far this season, and bringing fans back to full-capacity stadiums. The expansion of the regular season and the playoffs likely also contributed to the cap bounce. These factors could lead to the cap spiking "substantially" in 2023, added Rapoport and Pelissero.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. He's won two Super Bowl championships and earned six Pro Bowl selections in what will likely be a Hall of Fame career. The 39-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the campaign. Broncos-Chiefs best bets: How we're betting Sunday Night Football
Patrick Mahomes will look to improve to 8-0 against the Broncos when the Chiefs welcome them to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday night for a crucial AFC West clash. Here's how we're betting Broncos-Chiefs:C Jackson Cowart: Broncos +9.5Pricing the Chiefs as nearly 10 points better than their division rivals would have been perfectly reasonable a year ago. But are we sure this team deserves it, especially after losing against the spread in seven of its first 11 games as a favorite?Kansas City has won four straight on the back of an improved defense that's held each of its last four opponents to 17 points or fewer. But the offense has topped 20 points just once in that span. The Broncos, meanwhile, have held four of their last five opponents to 17 points or fewer despite their own offensive inconsistencies. It all came together for Denver in last week's dominant win over the Chargers, whom the Broncos outscored 28-7 until a late L.A. touchdown padded the scoreboard. If rising star Patrick Surtain can bait a suddenly turnover-prone Mahomes into a mistake or two Sunday, the Chiefs will have a hard time running away with this one.Alex Moretto: Under 47This is the first of two fascinating AFC division races taking center stage in prime time this week, and a four-way tie at the top after this contest isn't out of the question. This will be an excellent game - but don't expect fireworks. The Chiefs' revived defense is playing drastically better, and I expect that to continue out of the bye. The Broncos are looking better, too, generating more pressure and remaining stingy in the secondary. Kansas City's recipe for offensive success involves a lot of running, and the same is true for Denver. That's how the Broncos typically operate, anyway - moving up and down the field in small chunks - and it will be important in keeping Mahomes on the sideline. Explosive plays will be at a premium in this one, with any scoring drives chewing up plenty of time.Matt Russell: Broncos +9.5Teddy Bridgewater's incredible record as an underdog might guide the way here. In fact, it's his game against the Chiefs last season that gives me confidence, though that performance didn't come in Broncos orange. The Panthers were double-digit underdogs going into Arrowhead Stadium last December, but Bridgewater did what he does best, engineering long drives, burning the clock, and limiting possessions in a game that came down to a field-goal attempt. The Broncos showed last season their defensive design works well against the Chiefs, forcing five Harrison Butker field goals in their visit to Kansas City. They covered that game with Drew Lock at the helm; if the underdog GOAT is under center, I can't pass on Denver in what seems like a defensive matchup.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vikings' Griffen reveals he has bipolar disorder
Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen revealed he has bipolar disorder in the wake of an incident that took place at his home on Nov. 24.Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings."It's true I am bipolar," Griffen wrote Friday on Instagram. "I will embrace it and I will be an advocate for mental health. I been running from it a long time. I'm not ashamed of it anymore. It all started when my mother passed away. Went into a dark place, thought I was great for many years. I promise this time I will do everything the experts say. I love my family and I miss my friends. Thank you for all the love and support, but most of all thank you for all the prayers."The Vikings placed Griffen on the non-football illness reserve on Nov. 26, two days after police and mental health professionals were called to his house. Griffen had called 911 and was refusing to leave his house because he said there was an intruder inside trying to kill him. Police officers weren't able to locate an intruder after entering Griffen's home.Griffen, a four-time Pro Bowler, is in his second stint with the Vikings. He missed five games in 2018 during his first stretch with Minnesota after an altercation with police at a hotel. He spent four weeks undergoing mental health treatment after that incident and lived in a sober house for the final three months of the 2018 season. The Vikings haven't said when Griffen might return to the lineup. The 33-year-old has five sacks this season, trailing only Danielle Hunter for the team lead, though Hunter is out for the season due to injury.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 13 best bets: Ravens to keep rolling vs. slumping Steelers
We ended a brief tailspin with a 2-1 record a week ago, and we're feeling great about the value on the board for Week 13. Here are our best bets:Cardinals (-7.5, 42.5) @ Bears, 1 p.m. ETQuarterback health looms over this matchup for both sides, which is the cherry on top of what already profiled as a savvy under play. The Cardinals still don't know for sure whether they'll be without Kyler Murray (ankle) and DeAndre Hopkins (hamstring), who are both game-time decisions Sunday. Even if they do play, neither is likely to be 100% and faces a Bears defense that has held their last two opponents to a combined 30 points since a Week 10 bye.Andy Dalton will get the nod at QB for Chicago in place of injured starter Justin Fields (ribs), which is good news for under bettors. The Bears are averaging 16.7 points in Dalton's three starts, contributing to their stellar 8-3 record to the under. Arizona has quietly boasted top-five marks on defense and should make life difficult on this inept Chicago attack.Pick: Under 42.5Vikings (-7.5, 46.5) @ Lions, 1 p.m.This is a quintessential trap spot for the favorites in a contest between two teams that seem allergic to a blowout.Start with the Vikings, who haven't won a game by more than seven points since Week 3 despite leading by a touchdown at some point in all but one matchup this season. Now they're tasked with burying the pesky Lions without star rusher Dalvin Cook, who will miss Sunday's affair with a dislocated shoulder.Detroit may be winless, but it won't roll over in this one. The Lions have been outscored by a combined five points in three games since a bye week behind a renewed effort from their defense, which is allowing 12 points per contest over that stretch. Expect a bit of a rock fight in this one, even if the Vikings ultimately prevail.Pick: Lions +7.5Ravens (-4.5, 44) @ Steelers, 4:25 p.m.It took the market months to finally acknowledge that, indeed, the Steelers are not a good football team. We saw it last week in an embarrassing 41-10 loss to the Bengals, which came just two weeks after this group played to a tie against the winless Lions. Yikes. Now they're catching 4.5 points at home for the first time in five years. It's also the first time they've priced as this big of an underdog against the Ravens since 2012, and for good reason. Pittsburgh ranks among the 10 worst teams in DVOA and PFF grades and is in the bottom five in net yards per play (minus-0.84).Baltimore's offense has sputtered in recent weeks behind injures and poor conditions, but it should have little issue slicing through an underwhelming Steelers defense that will likely be without two-time All-Pro T.J. Watt, who is in the league's COVID-19 protocol. This one could get ugly in a hurry.Pick: Ravens -4.5C Jackson Cowart is a sports betting writer at theScore. This could be one wild offseason for NFL quarterback movement
If you thought last offseason offered up a big ol' game of musical chairs for NFL quarterbacks, just wait.Last year saw Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff switch places. Drew Brees and Alex Smith retired; Ben Roethlisberger probably should have. Carson Wentz, Teddy Bridgewater, and Ryan Fitzpatrick got new gigs. Jimmy Garoppolo's team traded the Coit Tower to move up to draft his replacement but chose to keep him around. Mitch Trubisky settled into the backup life. Andy Dalton and Joe Flacco still exist and have actually seen the field. Sam Darnold and Cam Newton somehow became teammates, and both have been benched for P.J. Walker. You get the idea.Finding a good quarterback is the most difficult transaction in sports. So when NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday morning that the San Francisco 49ers intend to trade Garoppolo after the season, it was a reminder that there again could be plenty of QB movement in 2022. Some of the prominent quarterbacks who could have gone elsewhere last year - Garoppolo, say - could be on the move this time. Maybe. There are still six weeks remaining in the 2021 regular season, plus the playoffs, so a lot can still change. But fans love to think about next year - especially fans of teams that need to find a good quarterback. What the hell. Let's do it. Kevin C. New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara won't play Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys due to a knee injury.Kamara, who was ruled questionable Wednesday, hasn't played since Week 9.The four-time Pro Bowler still leads New Orleans with 530 rushing yards this season. He's also racked up a team-high 32 catches and seven scrimmage touchdowns through eight appearances.Mark Ingram, who missed last week's blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills with a knee ailment, will once again serve as the Saints' No. 1 running back after clearing the injury report Wednesday. The 31-year-old has rushed for 205 yards (4.6 per attempt) and one touchdown in four games this year. The Saints' running game should also get a boost from Taysom Hill, who will start his first game at quarterback this season Thursday over Trevor Siemian.New Orleans also ruled out offensive tackles Ryan Ramczyk and Terron Armstead due to knee ailments, Rapoport reports.Injuries have been a major issue for the 5-6 Saints, who dropped their fourth consecutive game in Week 12.
Antonio Brown suspended 3 games for misrepresenting vaccination status
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown and defensive back Mike Edwards have both been suspended three games without pay for violating the NFL's COVID-19 protocols, the league announced Thursday. The NFL determined that both players misrepresented their vaccination status."The health and safety of players and personnel is our top priority," the league said in a statement. "The protocols were jointly developed working with our respective experts to ensure that we are practicing and playing football as safely as possible during the ongoing pandemic. The NFL-NFLPA jointly reinforce their commitment and further emphasize the importance of strict adherence to the protocols to protect the well-being of everyone associated with the NFL."The league opened an investigation into Brown in November after his former personal chef accused him of obtaining a fake vaccination card before training camp. The wideout's lawyer, Sean Burstyn, issued a statement at the time noting his client was vaccinated. The Buccaneers addressed the suspensions in a statement Thursday."We appreciate the league's timely handling of this matter and recognize the importance of the health and safety protocols that have been established," the team said.Brown, 33, hasn't played since Week 6 due to an ankle injury. He's reportedly expected to miss at least two more games because of the ailment.Burstyn reiterated Thursday that Brown is vaccinated, adding he won't appeal the suspension."The NFL made its determination and, instead of going through the drawn out and distracting process of challenging the outcome, Mr. Brown wrapped this up promptly, and he will make this most of this time by treating his ankle injury," Burstyn said in a statement, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. "Mr. Brown will be motivated, well-rested, and in the best shape of his life when he returns in Week 16."The NFL previously suspended Brown for the first eight weeks of the 2020 season for violating its personal conduct policy.Tampa Bay faces the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, and New Orleans Saints over the next three weeks. Brown and Edwards are eligible to return on Dec. 26 against the Carolina Panthers. The league also suspended free-agent wide receiver John Franklin III three games for violating COVID-19 protocols.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Murray, Hopkins expected to return in Week 13 vs. Bears
The Arizona Cardinals will likely welcome back their two biggest stars.Quarterback Kyler Murray and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins are expected to play Sunday against the Chicago Bears barring setbacks, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Murray and Hopkins have each missed Arizona's last three games due to ankle and hamstring injuries, respectively. The Cardinals, who went 2-1 without the duo, are coming off a bye.Murray was among the early MVP favorites before suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 8. The 24-year-old has completed 72% of his passes for 17 touchdowns against seven interceptions while posting a 7-1 record this season. He's also recorded three scores on the ground.Hopkins racked up 35 receptions for 486 yards before being sidelined. He leads the Cardinals with seven touchdown catches in 2021.Arizona owns the NFL's best record at 9-2.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NFL Week 13 round-robin moneyline parlay: Value analysis with big underdogs
We came close to at least dragging out the sweat last week. The Lions were victims of a last-second field goal around mealtime on Thanksgiving Thursday, and a win there would have made the Browns-Ravens game more interesting four days later. Alas, the RR MLP goes 1-4 for its worst showing of this mega-profitable season. How it worksWe parlay five underdogs together in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we're going to use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each for .1 units. If three teams pull off the upset like in Week 8, Week 10, and Week 11, you'll likely double your money. If four teams win, as they did in Week 3, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win, as they did in Week 1, then it's back into the pool, swimming in gold doubloons like heirs to the McDuck fortune.Who to playChargers +145Let's start with the best buy-low, sell-high spot of the week. Bettors are back in love with the Bengals and couldn't believe they were able to back them at -2.5 when this opened early in the week. The number is actually too high. All season, oddmakers have rated the Chargers ahead of the Bengals by more than a negligible margin. Only after the Bengals beat the Raiders and Steelers, while the Chargers beat the Steelers and lost in Denver, now the hierarchy should switch?Barring a weird sequence that included a punt block and an interception of a helmet, the Chargers were on their way to blowing out Pittsburgh as well. So, a game that should be lined as a pick'em now sees the Chargers paying out at around 3:2. For as much as we try to win all five of these games, this is still an exercise in searching for value each week, and that's what we have here, regardless of the outcome.Bears +275Kyler Murray may be back, DeAndre Hopkins could return, and as a result, the line may go up. At which point, even more value will be had on the Bears. In the short term, Andy Dalton gives the Bears a better chance to win. Having the Arizona stars return to a guaranteed chilly and maybe snow-affected game seems like a suboptimal situation for the Cardinals' offense. A low-scoring game gives the Bears a chance for the upset.Falcons +425, Jaguars +500I've written about the Falcons' chances against the Bucs in the upset of the week here.Looking at the Rams-Jaguars, the former has now lost three straight games, is missing their most versatile offensive weapon (replacing him with a pedestrian big name), has a quarterback that could use a few weeks off, has no reliable run game, and owns a leaky defense. Why couldn't they lose to anyone? They lost to the 0-13 Jets at home last season. The Jaguars are better than the 2020 Jets, and right now I'm not sure the Rams - without Robert Woods and Cam Akers, and with Stafford nursing injuries - are any better than they were at this time last season. It's easier said than done, but if the Jaguars could tighten up lazy routes, slightly inaccurate throws, pre-snap penalties, and limit turnovers, they are capable of moving the football using James Robinson. They can also put up a fight defensively, as they've given up less than the league average yards per play in every game since their bye. This bet is designed to be a low-investment way to catch lightning in a bottle for a week, not to expect both long shots to hit. If we can get one of these two, we'd be more than happy.Steelers +175I'm just as surprised the Steelers are here as you are, but their market rating has bottomed out to where they're actually undervalued (for maybe the first time since we cashed with them in Week 1) as 4.5-point home underdogs.I'm still not sold on the Ravens outside of Lamar Jackson, and there's no reason to believe he's not going to be sloppy with the football.Like most Steelers games, this hardly comes down to on-the-field metrics and is more about Mike Tomlin's general tendencies with his team. In this case, bringing their best for Baltimore and saving their season with an unexpected win is right in the Pittsburgh playbook. Here are how the odds look this week:PARLAYODDS (Approx.)LAC+CHI+ATL+4800LAC+CHI+JAX+5400LAC+CHI+PIT+2400LAC+ATL+JAX+7600LAC+ATL+PIT+3400LAC+JAX+PIT+4000CHI+ATL+JAX+11800CHI+ATL+PIT+5300CHI+JAX+PIT+6100ATL+JAX+PIT+8600LAC+CHI+ATL+JAX+PIT+80000Who are your five underdogs for a football betting lottery ticket?Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Belichick favored to win Coach of the Year after Patriots' stellar run
Bill Belichick has been regarded as the NFL's best coach for the better part of two decades, winning Coach of the Year three times in that span. But it's been 11 years since the last time he was bestowed the honor despite winning three Super Bowls in the last six seasons. If the betting market is any indication, the wait could be over soon. The longtime Patriots coach took over as the favorite to win the award (+300) after New England ripped off its sixth straight victory with Sunday's 36-13 win over the Titans, supplanting Cardinals coach and previous favorite Kliff Kingsbury (+400). Those two are followed closely by Packers coach Matt LaFleur (+600), while Bengals coach Zac Taylor (+800) and Titans coach Mike Vrabel (+800) are the only other contenders priced shorter than 15-1.It's been a slow rise to the top of the oddsboard for Belichick, whose Patriots got off to an uninspiring 2-4 start and looked like long shots to make the playoffs, let alone the division. Since then, New England has won its last six games by an incredible 24.7 points per contest to seize the top spot in the AFC East. For context, the undefeated 2007 Patriots outscored their opponents by a record 19.7 points per game.As is the case for any Belichick-led squad, defense has been the calling card for this year's team. New England is allowing the NFL's fewest points allowed per game (15.8) and ranks second in total takeaways (25). This unit has been unbelievably stingy during the Patriots' win streak, holding five of six opponents to 13 points or fewer with a combined 26 points allowed in the last four weeks. The bigger surprise has been on the other side, where rookie Mac Jones has matured into a dangerous passer under Belichick's watch for the NFL's hottest offense. New England has scored 35.2 points per game during its six-game win streak - best in the league - while Jones has posted the best passer rating (106.4) of any starter since Week 7.The Patriots face arguably their biggest test of the season this week against the Bills, who trail New England by a half-game in the AFC East standings. Those two teams will face off twice in the next three weeks in a stretch that could ultimately decide the Coach of the Year race: 21 of the last 25 winners have led their team to a division title, and the four who didn't were all in their first or second year with their team. There's an elevated standard for Belichick. During the three times he won this award, his Patriots finished with at least 14 wins, which won't be the case for this year's squad. They also featured Tom Brady, the current MVP favorite. But if this group can hold off Buffalo for the division crown and challenge for the top seed in the AFC, all with a rookie quarterback? This will be Belichick's award to lose ... once again.C Jackson Cowart is a sports betting writer at theScore. Seahawks sign Adrian Peterson
The Seattle Seahawks have signed veteran running back Adrian Peterson to the practice squad, the team announced Wednesday."I'm looking forward to seeing how he does and see where he can fit in," head coach Pete Carroll said. "He's an incredible competitor and a great guy, so I'm anxious to give him a chance to get on the field with our boys."The Tennessee Titans waived Peterson in late November after three games. He rushed for 82 yards and averaged 3 yards per carry with Tennessee.Peterson, who is eligible to be elevated to the active roster for games, will look to aid an injury-riddled Seattle running back room. The Seahawks lost starter Chris Carson to season-ending neck surgery, while Rashaad Penny and Travis Homer have also been banged up.Peterson, 36, ranks fifth in NFL history with 14,902 rushing yards. The Seahawks are coming off a Monday Night Football loss to the Washington Football Team and have lost six of their last seven games. Seattle sits last in the NFC West at 3-8.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Saints to start Hill for TNF vs. Cowboys
Taysom Hill will start at quarterback for the New Orleans Saints in their Thursday Night Football matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, sources tell ESPN's Mike Triplett.Hill took first-team reps in Wednesday's practice, and New Orleans has removed him from its injury report. The 31-year-old has missed the last two games with a foot injury.Saints head coach Sean Payton said Tuesday that the team wanted to see how Hill's foot responded to Wednesday's activities before announcing a starter.Trevor Siemian has filled in since Nov. 14 with Hill and starting quarterback Jameis Winston both sidelined, throwing for 377 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions in a pair of losses.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cowboys-Saints best bets: How we're approaching TNF
The Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints will be excited to flip the page to December after combining for a 1-7 record in November. They'll meet at the Superdome on Thursday for a game with significant playoff implications. Here's how we're betting Cowboys-Saints:C Jackson Cowart: Dak Prescott over 280.5 passing yardsOn the surface, this number seems low for Prescott, who threw for 375 yards a week ago and is averaging 293.2 passing yards per game. It's an even better value when you consider that his No. 1 receiver, Amari Cooper, will likely be back after missing the last two weeks on the COVID-19 reserve list.Since Cooper joined the Cowboys in 2019, Prescott has thrown for 304.4 yards per game when he's active and totaled at least 280 yards in over half of their games together, including three of their last four contests. Prescott will also benefit from the return of rising star CeeDee Lamb, who's battled injuries this year, and Michael Gallup, who went off last week in only his fourth game of the season.Prescott has only played two games with Cooper, Lamb, and Gallup active this campaign, combining for 699 yards and five touchdowns on a 74.2% completion rate in those contests. He's due for a strong showing Thursday against a Saints defense that ranks 23rd in pass defense and has been torched by veteran starters in recent weeks. Expect more of the same.Alex Moretto: Taysom Hill anytime TD (+275)The reins to this Saints offense have finally been handed over to Taysom Hill, a move that's been long overdue since Jameis Winston's season-ending injury. Bereft of weapons in the passing game, New Orleans will employ a run-heavy approach that'll be full of run-pass options and misdirection. That strategy will be especially prominent in the red zone. The Cowboys have allowed just six passing touchdowns over the last seven games, five of which have been from 20-plus yards out - the lone exception being a three-yard catch by running back Devontae Booker. Over that same span, they've allowed nine rushing touchdowns from inside the five, including two to quarterbacks. In a game where Alvin Kamara will be eased back following a prolonged absence, Hill and Mark Ingram are equal threats to score from in close. The difference is Hill's priced at +275, while Ingram is +110. Take the value with Hill to call his own number from in close in what will be his first start in almost a year. He had eight rushing touchdowns of 10 or fewer yards last season, including six of three yards or fewer.Matt Russell: Saints team total under 21.5Regardless of the status of Alvin Kamara, Mark Ingram, Ryan Ramczyk, and Terron Armstead for Thursday's game, this one-dimensional Saints team will need to run as much time off the clock as possible.Defensively, New Orleans can handle whatever foolish attempt Dallas makes to establish Ezekiel Elliott. Prescott largely refuses to run, and while he should have his entire wide receiving corps back, the Saints are good enough to prevent the big play and keep this game close.Even if the Cowboys can score in a big way, New Orleans' offense isn't likely to make me regret this bet.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cooper expected to return for TNF vs. Saints
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Amari Cooper is expected to play Thursday against the New Orleans Saints after missing the last two games with COVID-19, a source told ESPN's Ed Werder.Cooper, who is unvaccinated, missed losses to the Las Vegas Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs after testing positive.Thursday's matchup will mark the third time the Cowboys' star receiver trio of Cooper, CeeDee Lamb, and Michael Gallup will all be on the field together this season. While Cooper will provide a boost, Dallas won't have head coach Mike McCarthy after he tested positive for COVID-19. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will serve as interim coach for the Cowboys.Cooper is second on the team in receiving yards (583) and touchdowns (five) and third in catches (44).Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc.
