NFL Week 11 line moves: Shifts going away from key numbers
As usual, this week's line moves mostly feature murky injury and illness news. But, so far, the fluctuations have come in relative point-spread dead spots.Ravens @ Bears (+4.5, 45)Lamar Jackson missing practice with a non-COVID-19 illness has to be the reason why this number has dipped off of the opening line of Ravens -6.The Bears' injury report looks as bad as it has the last few weeks, and even though they've acquitted themselves well, my numbers have this line up over -7. The Ravens closed -8 in Miami a week ago, and Chicago can't be considered 3.5 points better than the Dolphins.Obviously, if Jackson is out for this game, the line would close near pick'em.Lions @ Browns (-11.5, 43.5)I missed my opportunity early in the week. With an eye on betting the Browns in a blowout spot, I stared down a Cleveland -9.5 bet and didn't pull the trigger, hoping to get a bigger wager down when limits go up later in the week. Hours later, it was gone, and this number moved up to -12 before seeing some buyback on the Lions.Jared Goff's oblique injury seems like it's going to hold him out of the lineup, which means either David Blough or Tim Boyle will get the call. Detroit got no pressure on Mason Rudolph last week; if that's the case this week, you'll see the good version of Baker Mayfield, especially with Nick Chubb returning to form a two-headed rushing monster with D'Ernest Johnson.Packers @ Vikings (+1.5, 47.5)Patience ran out as sharp bettors were hoping to get a flat +3 on the Vikings, but money has come in on Minnesota on the spread and moneyline. When comparing these teams, it's easy to see why - the Vikings lost to the Cardinals and Bengals thanks to one play, while the Packers beat those same two clubs thanks to one play. Minnesota and Green Bay are more evenly matched than the general public believes, and anything at a plus-price is worth a bet on the Vikings.Dolphins @ Jets (+3.5, 44.5)The Jets are making head-shaking decisions at quarterback, rolling with Joe Flacco this week. This confusing piece of news has lifted the line off the key number of Dolphins -3 in a game I want nothing to do with Sunday.49ers @ Jaguars (+6, 45)The Jaguars touched +7, but it didn't last very long as money has come in on Jacksonville in what's considered a great spot for the team. The Jags are facing a 49ers club that has to travel for an early kickoff on a short week after a big Monday Night Football win over a division rival. I'm already on record as saying Jacksonville is live to get the upset here as long as James Robinson takes the field in Duval.Washington Football Team @ Panthers (-3, 43)Basking in the glow of Cam Newton's return to the Panthers' locker room, the line for this game pushed through Panthers -2 all the way to -3.5 before sharp money took note and grabbed Washington +3.5, which was widely available during the middle of the week. My numbers agree with all of this, as I have this game slightly under two points in favor of the Panthers. So, I grabbed Washington +3.5.Steelers @ Chargers (-6, 47)This game is a mess, but its existence between Chargers -4 and -6 doesn't inspire much need for a bet since it hasn't spent any time on a key number. On the Steelers' side, Ben Roethlisberger's availability will move the market, especially after Rudolph did so little with so much time in the pocket last week. For the Chargers, the defense has been ravaged with COVID-19-related exclusions, including Joey Bosa and Jerry Tillery. I'll wait to see who's in and who's out before making a play for Sunday night's contest, but I'll look to back the favorite if Big Ben can't go.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Falcons' Patterson inactive for TNF vs. Patriots due to ankle injury
Atlanta Falcons running back/wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson won't face the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football due to an ankle injury, the team announced. The 30-year-old has racked up 473 yards and a team-high five touchdown receptions on 39 catches this season. He also leads Atlanta with 303 rushing yards (3.9 per carry) and two touchdowns on the ground.Mike Davis will carry the load at running back for the Falcons with Patterson sidelined, while rookie tight end Kyle Pitts is expected to have an increased workload among the team's receivers. Antonio Brown accused of obtaining fake vaccination card before camp
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown obtained a fake COVID-19 vaccination card to avoid NFL protocols before training camp, his former personal chef told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.Brown's girlfriend, Cydney Moreau, told chef Steven Ruiz on July 2 that "Ab" was willing to pay $500 for a Johnson & Johnson vaccination card."Can you get the COVID cards?" Moreau asked Ruiz in a text. She added: "JNJ shot. Ab said he would give you $500."Ruiz said the receiver wanted the Johnson & Johnson vaccine card because it requires only a single shot and, therefore, less paperwork. He added that Brown was apparently worried getting the vaccine could have negative effects on his body.Ruiz said he wasn't able to find a fake vaccination card for Brown. However, the 33-year-old receiver allegedly showed him fake cards he obtained weeks later. The pair parted ways because Ruiz said Brown still owes him $10,000.Brown's lawyer, Sean Burstyn, released a statement Thursday following reports of Ruiz's accusations, saying his client is vaccinated."Antonio Brown appreciates the severity of the pandemic, which is why he got the vaccine and supports everyone for whom it is advisable to get the vaccine," Burstyn said. "Coronavirus has hit close to home as it took him out of a game. He is healthy, vaccinated, and ready to win another Super Bowl."One of the worst parts of the pandemic has been a movement to cast doubt on our country's vaccination programs with baseless, vindictive tabloid gossip."The Buccaneers also issued a statement in response to the accusations Thursday, saying "no irregularities were observed" after club personnel looked into all vaccination cards sent by players."After an extensive educational process conducted throughout our organization this past offseason highlighting the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccines, we received completed vaccination cards from all Tampa Bay Buccaneers players and submitted the required information to the NFL through the established process in accordance with league policy," the team said.NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said in a statement that the league "will review the matter," according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post.McCarthy previously said teams are responsible for verifying personnel and player vaccination status, and any attempt to use a fake card is reviewed under the personal conduct policy and may result in the individual facing discipline, according to Stroud.Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians said on Sept. 9 before the Bucs opened the 2021 season that his team was fully vaccinated.Brown missed one game this year after testing positive for COVID-19 before a Week 3 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. He was sidelined for 10 days.Players who are vaccinated can return if they are asymptomatic and record two negative COVID-19 tests 24 hours apart. Vaccinated individuals with symptoms and unvaccinated players must remain away from the team facility for a minimum of 10 days.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: NFL reaffirms commitment to penalizing taunts
The NFL delivered a memo to all 32 teams to reaffirm its commitment to flagging taunting fouls, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The message went to general managers and head coaches and contains a link to a video that outlines acceptable and unacceptable behavior at the end of plays:
Newton demands rowdy Panthers crowd for home return
Cam Newton called on Carolina Panthers fans to create a raucous home atmosphere Sunday in what should be his first start since returning to the club.To that end, Newton said he's partnering with the Panthers to give away 50 tickets to fans who have rarely or never attended a game and will, therefore, be "screaming to the top of their lungs.""We need to reclaim Bank of America Stadium," Newton said Thursday. "I know the success hasn't been there but we ain't talking about the past, we're talking about the things here moving forward."The 32-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Panthers on Nov. 11, rejoining the team that drafted him first overall in 2011. He scored two quick touchdowns in limited snaps against the Arizona Cardinals and is expected to take over as the starter when the Washington Football Team comes to town for Week 11."We need to bring the pride back to Carolina," he said. "We're sitting at .500 right now, but it's nothing more important than this game that's coming up and we're just trying to be 1-0 by the end of Sunday."Newton spent his first nine seasons in Carolina, claiming an MVP and reaching the Super Bowl before a new regime came in and promptly released him. He re-signed in Carolina after a year with the New England Patriots, who cut him and named Mac Jones their starting quarterback at the end of the preseason. The Panthers eventually lost Sam Darnold to a shoulder injury, creating an opening for Newton to make his way back.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lamar misses 2nd straight practice due to non-COVID-19-related illness
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson didn't practice Thursday due to a non-COVID-19-related illness, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley.Jackson missed Wednesday's session after being sent home with an illness, though head coach John Harbaugh said it wasn't COVID-19.This is the fourth time an illness has sidelined the signal-caller this season, according to Hensley. However, Jackson, who also dealt with a back injury in Week 4, hasn't missed a game this campaign. The 24-year-old has completed 64.4% of his passes for 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2021. He's also Baltimore's leading rusher with 639 yards. The Ravens are coming off a 22-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins last Thursday. Jackson finished the game with a 73.6 passer rating, his second-lowest rating of the season.Baltimore owns a 6-3 record and will hit the road to face the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Tyler Huntley is expected to fill in for Jackson if he can't suit up.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

JPP: Buccaneers haven't given any opponent 'our best shot'
Jason Pierre-Paul said Thursday the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to manifest the best version of themselves, a process that's been ongoing all season."I don't think we have given any team our best shot yet - as a defense, offense, and special teams," the defensive end told reporters. "We try to forget that we the Super Bowl champions, but you got to understand that all 31 teams are looking to play their best game against us, even if they sorry, because there ain't no sorry team in the NFL."Tampa Bay dropped back-to-back contests to the New Orleans Saints and Washington Football Team, respectively, after beginning the season with a 6-1 record.Head coach Bruce Arians chided his squad after several miscues cost them versus Washington last Sunday, calling the Buccaneers "a very dumb football team.""I don't think we've been playing our best ball, but we capable of playing our best ball," Pierre-Paul said. "Everybody is going to give us they best shot, I knew that from the get-go since we came back in here. They gonna give us they best shot, we just got to figure out a way to give them our best shot."A torn rotator cuff has slowed Pierre-Paul this season. He's recorded just 2.5 sacks in 2021 after reaching 9.5 last year and playing a pivotal role in the Buccaneers' championship run.Tampa Bay will look to snap its two-game skid on Monday Night Football against Pierre-Paul's former team, the New York Giants.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Payton: Saints came close to signing Beckham
The New Orleans Saints believe they may have landed Odell Beckham Jr. as a free agent if the Los Angeles Rams hadn't come swooping in."We had good conversations," Saints head coach Sean Payton told the "Dan Patrick Show" on Thursday when asked how close his team came to signing the wideout. "He's from here. Only he could answer that, but I felt real positive."The Saints, Green Bay Packers, or Kansas City Chiefs were rumored to be Beckham's most likely destination, but he ended up signing with the Rams."I would say close," added Payton. "The question all along (was), if L.A. had an opportunity I knew that's where he was going to go. I don't think Los Angeles really was an option until maybe middle of the process. I would say fairly close, but only he would be able to answer that."Payton suggested the Saints' quarterback situation - Trevor Siemian took over as the starter after Jameis Winston suffered a season-ending knee injury - hardly factored into Beckham's thinking. The Saints reportedly discussed a Beckham trade with the Cleveland Browns before he hit waivers, but cap constraints hampered New Orleans' ability to make a deal. The NFC South contenders were looking to boost a thin receiving core that won't get Michael Thomas back from an ankle injury before the end of the season.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rodgers dealing with toe injury, 'definitely playing' vs. Vikings
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was absent from Wednesday's practice due to a toe injury, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. The Packers only held a walk-through Wednesday, but the reigning NFL MVP wouldn't have participated in any capacity had Green Bay held a regular training session.Rodgers, who suffered the injury before Green Bay's win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 10, still doesn't know his status for practice Thursday but has no doubt he'll be able to play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings."I'm not sure what my status will be tomorrow or Friday, but I'd like to get out there if I'm feeling good enough," Rodgers said, per Demovsky. "But it's definitely a better week than last week being separated, being able to go through all the meetings. I plan on being at practice on the field tomorrow, not sure how much involvement I'll do, though."He added, "I'm definitely playing Sunday. Today was a mental day, so I think a number of us were either limited or DNPs. Thankful to get a day to just do some rehab. See how the week plays out practice-wise, but definitely playing Sunday."It's still unclear how Rodgers sustained the injury. He said Tuesday on "The Pat McAfee Show" that his toe is "a little painful," adding it was a "COVID injury."The 37-year-old was in quarantine for 10 days after testing positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 3 and didn't practice last week. He returned in Week 10 against the Seahawks after missing the Packers' loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.Rodgers struggled in his return, completing just 62.1% of his throws while tossing 292 yards and no touchdowns against one interception.Green Bay, currently the NFC's No. 1 seed, improved to 8-2 with its victory over Seattle.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Patriots-Falcons best bets: Can New England stay scorching in Hotlanta?
There might not be an NFL team playing better football right now than the New England Patriots. Their four-game winning streak will be put to the test Thursday night against an Atlanta Falcons club coming off a miserable Week 10.Here's how we're betting Pats-Falcons:C Jackson Cowart: Falcons team total under 20.5The Patriots have stolen headlines in recent weeks for their gaudy scoring outputs, dropping 45 points a week ago and 54 a few weeks prior. But this is still an offense that's been held below 30 points in each of its other eight games this season, making it risky to lay the points here on the road. The more consistent - and actionable - unit for this club is its stellar defense, which ranks fifth in defensive DVOA, third in points allowed per drive (1.61), and second in points per game (17.7). New England has held its previous two opponents to a combined 13 points and is surrendering just 12.5 per contest during the team's four-game win streak. The Falcons' reputation as offensive juggernauts is much more favorable than the reality after last week's three-point dud in Dallas. Atlanta's offense has scored 25.8 points per game against teams with below-average scoring defenses, but that drops to a mere 12.3 points against top-half units. Expect a performance much closer to the latter mark on a short week against Bill Belichick and Co.Alex Moretto: Falcons +7As Matt will get into in further detail below, this line is a drastic overreaction to Week 10. The Patriots laid a beating on the Browns - Cleveland didn't have Nick Chubb or Kareem Hunt, and they basically started you and I at wide receiver - while the Falcons were dealt a beating at the hands of the Cowboys. The result? New England is valued at its highest point, and Atlanta is at its lowest. You can't price the Falcons as 8-point 'dogs on the road against the Cowboys, then come back and have them as 7-point home 'dogs against the Pats a week later. New England wasn't even 7-point favorites on the road against the Jets! Sure, we know how these games all turned out, but it doesn't change the fact that getting a touchdown at home with the Falcons is a terrific value. As a bonus, Cordarrelle Patterson might actually be available for this one when it seemed unlikely just a day or two ago. The versatile playmaker is a game-time decision, and with the team finally moving on from plodding back Mike Davis, the only way is up for this offense. Matt Ryan is a veteran signal-caller who won't be flummoxed by Bill Belichick's defense, as the Falcons do enough to keep it close in what should also be a low-scoring game.Matt Russell: Falcons +7The Falcons closed as 7.5-point underdogs at Dallas last week. Now they're 7-point underdogs at home to New England. Before even accounting for 2-3 points of a venue change, for all the Patriots' success recently, New England's not a half-point away from the Cowboys, and the team's definitely not 3 points better once we factor in the home-field advantage. The recent success is what's making the market go wild for the Patriots, in conjunction with the Falcons getting blown out by the Cowboys. However, we can't be this reactive to recent results if we're going to be successful long-term bettors. This game should be played at a conservative pace, and with each possession being valuable, look for the Falcons to score enough, even via the field goal, to stay within this number. Should Mac Jones struggle on the short week with an uncharacteristic turnover or two, the Falcons will have a chance to do what they did in Week 9 in New Orleans - win outright as a touchdown underdog.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. TNF player props: Bourne, Henry to be big targets vs. Falcons
With Thursday Night Football making its way to Atlanta, we're channeling Usher to get the vibe right for the start of Week 11.In a matchup where both the Patriots and Falcons may want to take it "Nice and Slow" from a pace perspective while on a short week, we're looking for "More" player prop winners."The Voice" of reasonLong before he took a seat in the spinny red chair on NBC, Usher connected with Lil' Jon and Ludacris for one the most imitated hooks in R&B history. We're looking for a similarly successful collaboration between Mac Jones and one of his receivers Thursday.A.J. Terrell has quietly been a pleasant addition to the Falcons' secondary since being drafted in 2020; teams aren't even targeting the Clemson product. I'd expect to see more of him against Jakobi Meyers. With Kendrick Bourne going for better than 33 yards in each of his last five games, he should get more than the four targets he's averaged during that span. Are we going to win this bet? Based on our 3-0 record on our conservative TNF prop bet: "Yeah!"Pick: Kendrick Bourne over 32.5 receiving yardsA TD that's definitely going to happenHands up, "Confessions I" - we missed our first touchdown try last week, but we're still 2-1 since we started this TNF prop endeavor. There are no theoretical locks on the board that "make me wanna" bet on a Falcon here. So, we'll look toward Patriots tight end Hunter Henry for a touchdown. With a season-high 82% of the snaps last week, Henry registered a pair of touchdowns, giving him seven scores in his last seven games. Jones is clearly looking for the massive red-zone target, so we will, too.Pick: Hunter Henry anytime touchdown +175A TD that won't happen ... but maybe it doesHere's "Confessions II" - we haven't won any of our three long-shot touchdown bets yet. However, cash just one, and we're set for the season. Until that glorious moment where this low-stakes bet hits, I'm OK with letting it "Burn."With so much unpredictability in the Falcons' Calvin Ridley-less pass offense, Tajae Sharpe (+500) is interesting as his replacement. But this is the place for us to get "Caught Up" on a big price. You've likely never heard of Jakob Johnson, who's definitely a backup singer to the Patriots' frontmen, but he's a fullback who's seen more than a third of New England's snaps in the last five games. Primarily a blocker, with others getting attention at the goal line, can't you see Josh McDaniels with a play-calling remix, getting Johnson a carry or a target for a short-yardage score?Pick: Jakob Johnson (+2500)Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. NFL Week 11 round-robin moneyline parlay: Big swings before a short week
We put another deposit into our Scrooge McDuck-inspired doubloon silo last week, but it could have been a Brinks-level drop-off. The Lions' kicker - who apparently joined the team after winning some sort of raffle - missed an extra point and had history's worst game-winning attempt, so a tie in Pittsburgh left us wanting. Meanwhile, the Saints were a two-point conversion shy of potential overtime, so we had to settle for 3-1-1 (27-22-1 on the season) and five of our eleven bets winning for a decent profit. How this worksWe're parlaying five underdogs together in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we're going to use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each for .1 units. If three clubs pull off the upset like in Week 8 and Week 10, you'll likely double your money. If four teams win, as they did in Week 3, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five sides win, as they did in Week 1, then it's back into the pool, swimming in gold doubloons like heirs to the McDuck fortune.Who to playFalcons +240Three factors make this our first Thursday night mention:
Buccaneers' Sherman to miss time with calf strain
Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Richard Sherman is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks with a Grade 2 calf strain, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Buccaneers officially placed Sherman on injured reserve Wednesday, making him ineligible to play again before Week 14.Sherman went down during the pregame warmup ahead of Tampa Bay's 29-19 loss to the Washington Football Team."I doubt seriously if he'll be back anytime soon," head coach Bruce Arians said Monday when asked about Sherman's timeline, according to Pewter Report's Scott Reynolds. The three-time All-Pro defensive back has appeared in three contests for the Buccaneers. He's recorded 11 tackles since signing with the club in September.Sherman previously missed a few games due to a hamstring injury.Dee Delaney replaced Sherman in the starting lineup but suffered a concussion in the loss to Washington.Starting cornerbacks Sean Murphy-Bunting and Carlton Davis are both on injured reserve, though Arians is hopeful the former can dress for Tampa Bay's Monday Night Football matchup against the New York Giants.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Murray 'pretty close' to returning ahead of game vs. Seahawks
The Arizona Cardinals could have their star signal-caller back under center in Week 11.Kyler Murray said Wednesday he's "pretty close" to returning from an ankle injury that's sidelined him for the past two games, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Head coach Kliff Kingsbury added that he's "hopeful" Murray will be back to face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, per ESPN's Josh Weinfuss. The Cardinals have also been missing receiver DeAndre Hopkins since Week 8 due to a hamstring injury. With Hopkins and Murray inactive, Colt McCoy led Arizona to a win over the San Francisco 49ers before getting blown out by the Carolina Panthers in Week 10.McCoy suffered a pectoral injury against the Panthers but is expected to be ready to go if Murray doesn't suit up Sunday.Murray was among the leading MVP candidates before injuring his ankle. The third-year quarterback has racked up 2,276 passing yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 147 yards and three scores on the ground.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Goff day-to-day with oblique injury
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is day-to-day with an oblique injury and will miss Wednesday's practice, head coach Dan Campbell told reporters, including ESPN's Eric Woodyard.Goff sustained the injury in Detroit's 16-16 tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He completed 14 of 25 passes for 114 yards while playing through the lingering ailment. The Lions are 0-8-1 in Goff's first year with the team. He's thrown for 2,109 yards and eight touchdowns to six interceptions.Tim Boyle is expected to fill in for the first-team reps during practice, but he remains on injured reserve after undergoing thumb surgery.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL upset of the week: The stealth Jaguars axe the 49ers
It's a matter of semantics.Did we win a Lions moneyline bet last week? Technically, no.Was the tie in Pittsburgh an upset? I'm sure if you asked Steelers' fans how they felt about not being able to beat Detroit, they'd probably say "yes."Either way, we're up 7.9 units this season in our weekly underdog spotlight, and that will have to keep us happy for one more week.If you thought backing a Lions squad looking for its first win last Sunday was a fool's errand, I'm sure you'll be thrilled to see the Jaguars getting our support this time as they host the 49ers. On the plus side, we're 1-0 this campaign when putting our faith in Jacksonville. The Market Read and The SpotThe market's certainly not ruling this out. The line for this game refused to spend any time at the key number of SF -7, being bet down to SF -6.The initial instinct after San Francisco's dominant Monday night victory is to assume the club has returned to form. Sharper bettors realize that the only thing it means is the 49ers have a potential letdown situation coming, along with a cross-country trip to Jacksonville for a matchup that doesn't have the same cache as a home primetime game within the division. The Jaguars offense versus the 49ers defenseThe Jaguars upset the Bills and nearly beat the Colts in Indianapolis last Sunday, but it's not because the offense has been on fire. Jacksonville's 3.8 yards per play against Buffalo indicated a fluky win, but 5.3 yards per play - including 179 rushing yards in Indy - was much more impressive. The difference between the two meetings? James Robinson missed the game against the Bills but returned against the Colts.Robinson only had 12 carries, but he gained 57 yards and added 27 more yards on four catches. The game script didn't allow for Robinson's full effect with the Jags going down 17-0 early. Many of those invested in Robinson's success sarcastically joke about it taking three contests for Urban Meyer to realize he was on the team. Jacksonville was 0-3 against the spread. With Robinson in a prominent role, here's the Jaguars' yards-per-play average since that discovery.GAME OFFENSIVE YPP@CIN6.2vsTEN6.9vsJAX6.4@SEA4.2@IND5.3League average: 5.5 yards per playRobinson left the game against the Seahawks after just four carries and no catches, and Jacksonville got smoked, leaving the team unable to cover the spread. The Jaguars went 3-1 ATS in the other four matchups, with the one non-cover coming against the Titans in their best offensive output.San Francisco upset the Rams on Monday, but we explained how that was a favorable matchup for the 49ers, as their 21st-ranked run defense doesn't get exposed when facing Los Angeles. San Fran has allowed the fifth-highest percentage of first downs via the run, so Jacksonville should be able to take the ball out of Trevor Lawrence's hands in high-leverage situations. The Jaguars defense versus the 49ers offenseThe Jags' win over Buffalo was fluky at best on the offensive side - they scored just three field goals - but the victory was fully deserved on the defensive side, as the unit kept the Bills out of the end zone. After the rare triumph and an early blocked punt touchdown for Indianapolis, it would have been easy for Jacksonville to letdown after an early 17-0 deficit. But the Jags held strong, allowing 4.8 yards per play and nearly shutting out the Colts after keeping Buffalo's explosive offense to just 4.6 yards per play.Even in Jacksonville's 31-7 loss to Seattle, the defense allowed just 4.4 yards per play. So whether it's a case of getting healthier or having a better plan after the post-London bye week, the defensive unit has held up against a variety of offensive styles. Jets' Flacco to start vs. Dolphins with Wilson out
The New York Jets plan to start Joe Flacco at quarterback Sunday versus the Miami Dolphins with rookie Zach Wilson still recovering from a knee injury, head coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday.Mike White started the previous three games in Wilson's place but threw four interceptions to the Buffalo Bills in Week 10."Miami's got a dynamic coverage system as it pertains to defense with (cover) zero and all the different coverages they run," Saleh said. "And Joe's kind of been there, done that, and just kind of a steadying experience that we felt would put us in the best position to win."Flacco took his first snaps of the season after replacing White late against the Bills with the score out of reach. He completed all three of his passes for 47 yards and a touchdown.New York reacquired Flacco from the Philadelphia Eagles before the trade deadline. He spent the 2020 campaign with the Jets, appearing in five games with four starts. The 36-year-old played his first 11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens but has since bounced around after they traded him to the Denver Broncos in 2019. The former Super Bowl MVP has won just two of his last 12 starts, which he split between the Broncos and Jets.Flacco threw for 864 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 55.5% of his passes for the Jets last year.Wilson is expected to return soon after spraining his PCL in Week 7 against the New England Patriots.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Mayfield looking to help Landry snap out of drought
Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is looking to re-establish Jarvis Landry in the passing game amid the receiver's quiet stretch since he returned from injury."We'll find ways to get Jarvis involved back in the game plan, there's no doubt about that," Mayfield told reporters Wednesday. "He's a tempo-setter for us, he's an extremely good leader and locker-room guy for us, everybody knows that."Landry has yet to record a 100-yard game this season and has been held below 40 yards in three of four contests since coming off injured reserve in Week 7.The slot artist said Tuesday he can't pinpoint the reason for his diminished production or the Browns' collective regression in the passing game. Landry led the team in receiving in each of his first three campaigns in Cleveland with Mayfield as his quarterback.Mayfield has battled his own decline this season, perhaps in part due to injuries. The former No. 1 overall pick has played through a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder along with a knee and foot ailment. He said Wednesday that "this is probably the most beat up I've ever been in my career."Nonetheless, he plans to start Sunday against the winless Detroit Lions and expects Landry to be more involved in the offense."Like I said," Mayfield told reporters, "we'll get the ball in 80's hands and get going again."Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Power Rankings - Week 11: 1 unheralded Pro Bowl nominee for each team
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors. This week, we identify one unheralded player from each team worthy of Pro Bowl consideration.1. Tennessee Titans (8-2) Wesley Hitt / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 2Lost in the noise around Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt is the incredible pass-rushing of Titans linebacker Harold Landry. The 25-year-old has recorded at least 0.5 sacks in each of his last eight games, and he ranks third in the NFL with 10 sacks on the season. A major factor in Tennessee's hot run, Landry deserves Pro Bowl consideration.2. Green Bay Packers (8-2)Previous Rank: 3It's looking like the Packers got the steal of the offseason when they inked De'Vondre Campbell to a one-year, $2-million deal. Campbell is graded as the top linebacker by PFF due to his playmaking ability. The veteran has recorded two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and 88 tackles. Green Bay's defense has allowed just 11.3 points over its last three games, and that wouldn't be possible without Campbell.3. Arizona Cardinals (8-2)Previous Rank: 1For all the credit Kyler Murray and Kliff Kingsbury deserve for what they've accomplished with the Cardinals' offense, linebacker Markus Golden should get equal recognition for his play on defense. With a league-leading four forced fumbles on the season, Golden has been a force. He's also on pace to obliterate his single-season career high of 12.5 sacks - he already has nine.4. Buffalo Bills (6-3)Previous Rank: 7There isn't a wrong choice between Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer for the Bills safety most deserving of Pro Bowl consideration. We'll go with Poyer since he's still chasing his first Pro Bowl nod. The 30-year-old has been a field general for Buffalo, notching a team-leading four interceptions in 2021. He's also added a sack and four tackles for loss.5. Dallas Cowboys (7-2) Richard Rodriguez / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 8This spot likely would have gone to Randy Gregory before the Cowboys placed him on injured reserve, but cornerback Anthony Brown has been impressive, too. While Brown's three interceptions fail to match Trevon Diggs' eight picks, there's an argument to be made that the former has been just as good. Brown is graded as a top-20 corner by PFF this season and has a higher coverage score than Diggs.6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-3)Previous Rank: 4It's difficult to pinpoint an unheralded player on a superstar-driven team like the Buccaneers, but Ali Marpet deserves his due for his play in the trenches. The 28-year-old is currently graded as the league's sixth-best guard by PFF.7. Los Angeles Rams (7-3)Previous Rank: 5There's no denying Leonard Floyd gets a massive boost from the constant double-teams Aaron Donald faces. But Floyd is still doing his job on the edge at a high level. With 7.5 sacks on the year, he can't be forgotten in L.A.'s defense.8. Kansas City Chiefs (6-4)Previous Rank: 15The best center in the NFL this year might not be a seasoned pro. In fact, there's a case to be made that Chiefs rookie Creed Humphrey deserves that honor. Humphrey entered Week 10 with just one sack and five hurries allowed.9. New England Patriots (6-4)Previous Rank: 12Who is Adrian Phillips? The veteran defensive back played a key role on defense and special teams for the Chargers from 2014-19, even earning a Pro Bowl nod. Still, he largely went under the radar. But that's all changed in 2021 as Phillips makes a name for himself on defense. He's snagged a career-high three picks - including two against his former club - and forced one fumble.10. Baltimore Ravens (6-3) Rob Carr / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 6The Ravens don't have the best track record when it comes to developing pass-rushers, but it looks like they may have bucked that trend with Odafe Oweh. The rookie is outproducing four-time Pro Bowler and teammate Justin Houston in sacks (four to three) and is nearly matching him in quarterback hits (11 to 13) and pressures (17 to 18), according to Pro Football Reference.11. Los Angeles Chargers (5-4)Previous Rank: 9A contender for Offensive Rookie of the Year, Rashawn Slater might also secure a trip to the Pro Bowl. The 13th overall pick has been a brick wall at left tackle and played a major role in the Chargers' 4-1 start.12. New Orleans Saints (5-4)Previous Rank: 10Marcus Williams has been a model of consistency over his first five NFL seasons, but he's yet to earn a call to the Pro Bowl. Perhaps voters will finally take notice of the Saints' 25-year-old safety, who has multiple interceptions for the fifth straight year. Consistency should be rewarded.13. Cleveland Browns (5-5)Previous Rank: 11The Browns' running backs have driven the ball down the field this season, but it's the offensive line that's been getting them from Point A to Point B. While Joel Bitonio gets all the shine, teammate Wyatt Teller has been playing just as well. Teller, who has yet to make a Pro Bowl, is currently PFF's third-ranked guard, and his run-blocking ability is graded higher than Bitonio's.14. Indianapolis Colts (5-5)Previous Rank: 17There's flying under the radar, and there's going completely undetected. The latter describes Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart quite well. Stewart has been a mainstay in the trenches for the Colts, holding the fort against opposing rushing attacks. Unfortunately, his is not a flashy position, robbing Stewart of mainstream recognition.15. Pittsburgh Steelers (5-3-1) Emilee Chinn / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 14The lone special teams player in these rankings, it's hard to fully appreciate Chris Boswell's importance to a Steelers team lacking in firepower. He's converted 94.7% of his field-goal attempts, good for second-best in the league (minimum 19 attempts). He's also been incredibly accurate from long range, going a perfect 6-for-6 on 50-plus-yard attempts.16. Cincinnati Bengals (5-4)Previous Rank: 16The Bengals gave Chidobe Awuzie a three-year deal this past offseason, and the former Cowboys cornerback has been worth every penny. Awuzie is having a career year in Cincinnati, allowing a career-low 4.8 yards per target and 71.4 passer rating when targeted, according to Pro Football Reference.17. Minnesota Vikings (4-5)Previous Rank: 21The Vikings handed Brian O'Neill a major contract extension in the summer, and he's repaid them on the field. O'Neill entered last weekend having allowed just eight pressures through his first eight games, according to PFF.18. San Francisco 49ers (4-5)Previous Rank: 22The 49ers have always been able to count on Laken Tomlinson, who's only missed one game since 2017. But the guard has now added superb play to his durability and consistency. Excelling in a contract year, Tomlinson is primed to cash in after anchoring the interior of San Francisco's offensive line.19. Las Vegas Raiders (5-4)Previous Rank: 13Casey Hayward had a crucial dropped interception in the Raiders' Sunday night loss to the Chiefs, but it was a rare misstep in a strong campaign for the 32-year-old. Quarterbacks targeting Hayward have completed just 50% of their passes this season, according to Pro Football Reference.20. Carolina Panthers (5-5) Mike Comer / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 25Another year, another under-the-radar season for Haason Reddick. After finishing with 12.5 sacks last season, Reddick already has 9.5 through 10 games in 2021. He's been red-hot of late, recording three sacks and six quarterback hits over his last three contests. The Panthers linebacker could be looking at his first Pro Bowl nod if he continues playing at this level.21. Philadelphia Eagles (4-6)Previous Rank: 26Known by his nickname, "Gravedigger," Javon Hargrave has spent much of the 2021 season burying quarterbacks. With six sacks through 10 games, Hargrave is on pace for a new career high. While some have voiced concern over the Eagles' defense under Jonathan Gannon, Hargrave has flourished - a testament to his talent.22. Denver Broncos (5-5)Previous Rank: 18Javonte Williams has shared the backfield with Melvin Gordon, but he deserves more than his fair share of praise for holding his own against the veteran rusher. Williams has rumbled his way through contact en route to 514 rushing yards. He's also rushed for 4.8 yards or more per carry in seven of his 10 games with the Broncos this season. While he may not have the volume, his efficiency foreshadows a very bright future.23. Seattle Seahawks (3-6)Previous Rank: 19Darrell Taylor looked to be exactly what the Seahawks were hoping he'd be through the first portion of the season. The 2020 second-round pick accumulated four sacks in his first five games before suffering a neck injury in Week 6. Taylor has cooled off since returning in Week 8, but he's a dark horse for the Pro Bowl if he can rediscover his earlier pace.24. Chicago Bears (3-6)Previous Rank: 23Those who predicted that Allen Robinson would be the Bears' leading receiver at this point in the season find themselves mistaken. That distinction currently belongs to Darnell Mooney, who's putting together a fine second season in the NFL. Playing in a Chicago passing attack that ranks last in yardage, Mooney has become the go-to option, racking up 450 yards and two touchdowns.25. New York Giants (3-6) Jonathan Bachman / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 24Year 2 has been a promising one for 2020 second-round safety Xavier McKinney. While he isn't a true household name yet, his playmaking ability has made him a favorite among Giants faithful. McKinney has four interceptions this season, tying him for fourth-most in the NFL.26. Atlanta Falcons (4-5)Previous Rank: 20Doom and gloom have surrounded the Falcons' defense, but the team can take solace in rising star A.J. Terrell. The second-year cornerback has operated at a higher level than the rest of an Atlanta defense that ranks 31st in points allowed. Terrell entered Week 10 having surrendered no more than 30 receiving yards in coverage in any game this season, according to PFF.27. Washington Football Team (3-6)Previous Rank: 29The man to fear on Washington's defensive line this season isn't Chase Young; it's Jonathan Allen. The 26-year-old has been a force in 2021, recording a quarterback hit in each game, along with six sacks. He's also the third-ranked interior lineman by PFF, trailing only Aaron Donald and Cameron Heyward. That's some solid company.28. Miami Dolphins (3-7)Previous Rank: 30Christian Wilkins' stats aren't spectacular on paper: two sacks, six quarterback hits, and one forced fumble. But his true value can be seen by looking beneath the surface. The former 13th overall pick is graded top six among interior defenders, according to PFF.29. Jacksonville Jaguars (2-7)Previous Rank: 27Josh Allen enjoyed the spotlight for his Week 9 performance against his identically named Bills counterpart, but that wasn't his only noteworthy showing. Allen is coming into his own during his third NFL season, notching a team-high 5.5 sacks. The Jaguars pass-rusher appears to be improving as the year progresses, recording three sacks and six quarterback hits over his last three contests.30. New York Jets (2-7) Jim McIsaac / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 28The Jets don't have much Pro Bowl talent - if any. But they have to like what they're seeing from rookie running back Michael Carter. Carter has acted as a buffer for a passing attack that's struggled to move the ball. He's accumulated 673 yards from scrimmage over nine games, and his 31 receptions are tied for the team lead.31. Detroit Lions (0-8-1)Previous Rank: 32Though the Lions' roster mostly resembles a collection of unwanted goods, T.J. Hockenson is one player any team would add in a heartbeat. The former top-10 pick ranks sixth among tight ends with 448 receiving yards this season.32. Houston Texans (1-8)Previous Rank: 31The Texans entered the 2021 campaign focused more on the future than the present. One player who will surely be involved in both is defensive end Jonathan Greenard. The 2020 third-round pick is showing glimpses of his potential, recording seven sacks and one forced fumble this year. If Houston manages to send a representative to the Pro Bowl, Greenard should be the leading candidate.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Landry: Beckham's departure from Browns 'stung'
Jarvis Landry admitted Odell Beckham Jr.'s departure from the Cleveland Browns "stung" and that he's unsure why it didn't work out between his friend and the franchise."Definitely was something that hurt," the wideout said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Jake Trotter. "It still does."Beckham's exit from Cleveland came shortly after his father, Odell Beckham Sr., posted a video compilation of plays on which Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield missed or didn't pass to the three-time Pro Bowl receiver. The video made waves on social media ahead of the trade deadline, and the Browns excused Beckham from practice before ultimately releasing the 29-year-old.Landry stood up for Mayfield on Tuesday, describing the signal-caller as a "tough man." Mayfield, 26, has been playing through a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. The Browns won their first game without Beckham but suffered a lopsided 45-7 loss against the New England Patriots in Week 10. Beckham, meanwhile, found himself on the losing end of a 31-10 rout at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers in his debut with the Los Angeles Rams.Cleveland's offense struggled to get the ball to its playmakers in the Browns' loss to New England. Running back D'Ernest Johnson finished with a team-high seven receptions for 58 yards, while Landry made four catches for 26 yards."I haven't been able to get the ball so much, either," the five-time Pro Bowler said. "But at the end of the day, I've been able to (make the most) with the opportunities I'm given."Yeah, I'm battling some things, but on Sundays, I always give everything I have. And that will never change."Landry, who has missed four games due to a knee sprain, said the 5-5 Browns remain focused on finding success without Beckham."(We) just have to find a way to turn it around," the 28-year-old said.Cleveland will look to get back on track Sunday against the winless Detroit Lions (0-8-1).Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. CFB Week 12 betting preview: Big games for division supremacy
Our hero of the season, Jayden de Laura, saved a push in the wee hours of Sunday. While it doesn't forgive Penn State giving up a long touchdown for Michigan's win and cover, or Oklahoma's offensive horror show, at least Week 11's damage was limited to 2-3-1. And we're still profitable at 25-18-2 in our early look ahead to the big games in college football.No. 7 Michigan State @ No. 4 Ohio State (-19, 66.5)It seems like every other week we're talking about a top-five matchup where the perennial powerhouse is a three-touchdown favorite over the school that's "not supposed to be there." Last week, Ohio State's offense exploded to crush Purdue.Michigan State likely won't be able to stop the Buckeyes, either. But this is a classic situation where the Spartans' hope is that their Heisman candidate, Kenneth Walker, can help limit the total possessions. He'll live up to the hype this week, and Michigan State will limit the careless mistakes Purdue made.Pick: Michigan State +19No. 25 Arkansas @ No. 2 Alabama (-20.5, 57.5)Alabama's road to Atlanta is now thoroughly paved, as it'd take two losses for the Crimson Tide to miss out on the SEC title game. They won't lose this one, but they might get a scare.Arkansas edged LSU in Death Valley last week, and it wasn't pretty. That said, the Razorbacks have the run game and high-level talent to create the explosive offensive plays they'll need to stay attached to the Tide. Defensively, there are enough playmakers for Arkansas to make this game look a lot like Alabama's matchup with LSU a couple of weeks ago, where Bryce Young didn't have much room to work.Pick: Arkansas +20.5 (wait and look for +21)Virginia @ No. 21 Pittsburgh (-14.5, 66)The Coastal Division is up for grabs in Pittsburgh. This line is high, which tells me that star quarterback Brennan Armstrong won't be in the lineup again for Virginia. Without him, one of the nation's top offenses was impotent against Notre Dame last week, so don't bet on this game if he's forced to sit. However, if Armstrong makes a heroic return and this line doesn't get adjusted below +10, the Cavaliers are the play here, no matter how much we expect Kenny Pickett to shred Virginia's defense.Pick: Cavaliers +14.5 (only if Armstrong plays, play down to +10.5)UAB @ No. 23 UTSA (-4.5, 53.5)The buzz is palpable ahead of the battle for Conference USA's western division. OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but UTSA still lingers as one of three undefeated teams in the country. The Roadrunners believe a New Years' Six bowl game is possible should Cincinnati slip up, so everything is on the line for them in this game.If UTSA is the giant, UAB is the designated giant killer as the conference's second-best team. I'd back the Blazers at home, or if they were laying points against any other team in the conference. However, I believe in the Frank Harris/Sincere McCormick combination to come up big in their last tough test before the potential conference championship game rematch with Western Kentucky.Pick: UTSA -4.5No. 3 Oregon @ No. 24 Utah (-3, 59)Sometimes the line just tells you what you're supposed to play. That's the case here, as Oregon's chances for the College Football Playoff hang in the balance with a trip to Salt Lake City, a place where Pac-12 hopes go to die.The Ducks' defense has given up more points than you'd expect from a team that prioritizes that side of the ball, and Cameron Rising will have enough success that this game will come down to whether Utah can stop Oregon's ground game. The fact the Utes are favored tells me the market thinks there's a good chance of that happening, which would force Anthony Brown to make the necessary throws. That's problematic for Oregon and the Pac-12's chances at a playoff spot.Pick: Utah -3 (wait to try to get -2.5)Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Report: Chargers place Bosa, Tillery on COVID-19 list
The Los Angeles Chargers have placed pass-rusher Joey Bosa and defensive tackle Jerry Tillery on the COVID-19 list, according to ESPN's Field Yates. Both players' status for L.A's Sunday Night Football matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers is uncertain.Bosa, 26, has tallied 28 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and three tackles for loss in nine games in his first campaign at outside linebacker in the Chargers' 3-4 defense. The three-time Pro Bowler racked up 39 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 15 tackles for loss as a defensive end for L.A. last season.Tillery, 25, has notched 30 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and three tackles for loss in his third campaign with the Chargers. The pair join linebacker Drue Tranquill on L.A.'s reserve list. The Steelers are also dealing with COVID-19 concerns. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick remain on the team's reserve list entering Week 11.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Rodgers: Jamal Adams tempted fate by mocking belt celebration
Aaron Rodgers wasn't impressed with Jamal Adams after the Seattle Seahawks safety mocked Rodgers' championship belt celebration upon intercepting the Green Bay Packers quarterback in Week 10."I didn't see him do it, but there hasn't been a lot of positive things that come from guys doing it over the years," Rodgers said on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday. "The boys can put together some mock-ups for some of those things, but there hasn't been a lot of positives that have come away from guys mocking the belt over the years."That was a gift that I threw him late in the game, an absolute early Christmas present on that one, a bad decision. I obviously didn't throw it anywhere near where I wanted to throw it."Adams picked off the 37-year-old in the end zone Sunday for his first interception since 2019 when he played for the New York Jets. He celebrated by strapping an imaginary wrestling belt around his waist as Rodgers has done throughout his career."Look, there have been some guys who have made some good picks over the years," Rodgers added. "A good play on the ball, or baiting me. There hasn't been a ton of guys, but those I really respect. And most of those guys, I tell them after the game or during the game, 'Hey, man, great play.' I have respect for that."And I respect Jamal. He's a hell of a player. But that wasn't necessarily the most difficult one. I kind of threw it right to him."Adams, 26, made the interception in the third quarter, preventing Green Bay from adding to a 3-0 lead. The Packers went on to win 17-0.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Rams' McVay: 2-game losing streak has been humbling
The Los Angeles Rams have come back down to earth after losing two games in a row following a 7-1 start. The two-game slide was capped off with a 31-10 beatdown at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. However, head coach Sean McVay believes the disappointing performances are not a true reflection of his club."I choose to believe that these last couple of weeks are not who we are," McVay said, according to Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk. "I refuse to believe that even though you know what, you’re only as good as your last game. These last two weeks have certainly been humbling.”The Rams have been outscored 59-26 over their last two games. Their 10-point showing Monday was also a season low.Matthew Stafford has noticeably struggled during the slide, throwing two touchdowns to four interceptions.Los Angeles heads into its bye week with a record of 7-3. The Rams' next contest will come on the road in Week 12 against the Green Bay Packers.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Fields has at least 38 rushing yards in each of his last four games. He had a chance during the bye to evaluate his performance and prepare for the final stretch of the season, which begins with the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11. It was also the third time the rookie posted double-digit fantasy points over his last four games, despite playing limited snaps prior to Week 10.With the Patriots playing on a short week this Thursday, it's possible starter Damien Harris still isn't cleared from concussion protocol. If that happens, Stevenson will have another opportunity to make a case for a bigger workload down the stretch.Even if Stevenson doesn't emerge as a difference-maker long term, this is the type of player you want to have on your roster in case his opportunity arrives.D'Onta Foreman, TitansNext UpRosteredFABvs. HOU4%$14There were two players highlighted as stash options in Start, Sit, Stash, Quit, and the other one last week was Foreman. In the Tennessee Titans' first game without Derrick Henry, Foreman outplayed Adrian Peterson and Jeremy McNichols on his limited touches. That was enough reason to get him on your bench and see if he could eventually move up the depth chart.Reports then trickled out Sunday morning that Foreman would see the most work of the trio this week, and that's exactly what happened. He received the most snaps and touches, resulting in 78 yards from scrimmage. This is likely to remain a three-man committee, which limits everyone's ceiling for now. But the fact that Mike Vrabel and the Tennessee coaches already showed a willingness to feed Foreman makes him a priority pickup heading into a favorable matchup with the Houston Texans.Wayne Gallman, FalconsNext UpRosteredFABvs. NE0%$14With Cordarrelle Patterson nursing a high-ankle injury that will likely keep him out for at least a couple of weeks, fantasy managers will scramble to add the Atlanta Falcons' backup RB.But don't make the mistake of thinking that's Mike Davis. Though the veteran was the starter early in the year, his playing time has dwindled in recent weeks and he's failed to top 20 yards in three of the past four outings. When Patterson went out Sunday, it was Gallman who handled the bulk of the touches, turning 16 attempts into 76 yards from scrimmage.Gallman is the back to roster here if you want to get involved with a Falcons offense that's losing its best playmaker. Miller active for MNF vs. 49ers, set to make Rams debut
Von Miller is set to suit up as a member of the Los Angeles Rams for the first time. The star pass-rusher, who was traded to the Rams on Nov. 1 but didn't play last week with an ankle injury, is active for Monday's game against the San Francisco 49ers, according to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.Receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is also expected to make his debut with L.A. after signing a one-year deal with the team last week. The Rams acquired Miller from the Denver Broncos before the trade deadline for second- and third-round picks.Miller will team up with three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald to form one of the NFL's most intimidating pass-rushing tandems. The linebacker left the Broncos as the team's all-time leader in sacks with 110.5.The 7-2 Rams will look to rebound from their second loss of the season against the 3-5 49ers.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Packers' Mercilus to miss rest of season with torn biceps
Green Bay Packers linebacker Whitney Mercilus suffered a torn biceps in Sunday's 17-0 win over the Seattle Seahawks and will miss the remainder of the season, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Packers will likely place Mercilus on season-ending injured reserve.Mercilus, 31, previously spent 10 seasons with the Houston Texans. He recorded 345 tackles, 72 tackles for loss, and 57 sacks during his time in Houston. The Packers signed Mercilus to a one-year contract just days after the Texans released him in October. The 2012 first-round pick tallied 17 tackles and four sacks in 2021.Mercilus is the latest Packers defensive star to suffer an injury this season. Carroll: Referees played 'huge part' in shutout loss
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll isn't happy with the officiating in Sunday's 17-0 loss to the Green Bay Packers."(The officials) were such a big part of the game," Carroll said Monday, according to Grant Gordon of NFL.com. "They were a huge part of the game yesterday."One of the calls Carroll took issue with came in the second quarter after Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers fumbled the snap. Both Rodgers and Seahawks defensive lineman Darrell Taylor lunged for the ball, and Taylor appeared to grab it before Rodgers. However, officials ruled Rodgers had simultaneous possession with Taylor, which kept the ball with Green Bay despite Carroll challenging the ruling."Darrell is laying on top of the football and the quarterback was reaching underneath him," the coach said. "Darrell had it from the moment that ball's on the ground. He got his chest on the ball and was laying on it ... He's laying on the ground and the guy's reaching underneath him and they gave it to the offense and that's a big play."Carroll also thinks the referees erred in awarding Packers cornerback Kevin King an interception in the third quarter. With Green Bay leading 3-0, King caught Russell Wilson's pass intended for D.K. Metcalf in the end zone but appeared to lose control of the ball after being tackled."Russ throws the interception in the end zone, I don't know, I see the ball on the ground," Carroll said. "The guy's got to finish the catch and I don't know why that was looked at in that manner. They called it, they saw it and all that. But that's points on the board. Russ took a chance right there and it didn't work out for us. We were right down there to kick a field goal."Wilson, who hadn't played since Week 5 due to a finger injury, struggled in his return, completing just 20 of 40 pass attempts for 161 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. It's the first time Seattle has been shut out with Wilson as the starter. The Packers limited the Seahawks to just 208 total yards and 15 first downs.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Super Bowl odds update: Bucs drop from top spot after stunning loss
While the rest of the NFL endured the carnage that was Week 9, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers remained unscathed on their bye week. This week, the chaos came for them.Tampa Bay fell behind early and never recovered in Sunday's loss to the Washington Football Team, which dropped the Buccaneers (+650) from the pole position in the Super Bowl market. Stepping in their place are the Buffalo Bills (+600), who suffered their own shocking loss in Week 9 but bounced back with a dominant win over the New York Jets to re-assume the top spot. The remaining field of contenders played closer to how we'd expect after a topsy-turvy slate a week ago. The Dallas Cowboys (+900) lambasted the Atlanta Falcons to sneak into the top four for the first time all season, while the Green Bay Packers (+1000) saw a slight bump in their odds with a dominant win in Aaron Rodgers' return. Both teams sit just behind the Los Angeles Rams (+700), who face the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.Perhaps the biggest move this week came from the New England Patriots (+2500), who were priced as high as 100-1 this season but are firmly in the title mix after Sunday's 45-7 shellacking of the Cleveland Browns. That marked New England's fourth consecutive win - they've come by a combined 100 points, and the Patriots have held three of those teams to 13 points or fewer. The biggest losers this week - other than Cleveland, which moved from 28-1 to 40-1 - were the Pittsburgh Steelers, who entered Week 10 as heavy favorites to win their fifth straight game and move into a tie for first place in the AFC North. Instead, with Ben Roethlisberger sidelined, Pittsburgh played to a tie against the winless Detroit Lions and saw its title odds dip to 80-1, tied for 17th on the board. Here are the updated Super Bowl odds after Week 10:TEAMODDSBuffalo Bills+600Tampa Bay Buccaneers+650Los Angeles Rams+700Dallas Cowboys+900Green Bay Packers+1000Arizona Cardinals+1100Kansas City Chiefs+1100Tennessee Titans+1200Baltimore Ravens+1400New England Patriots+2500Los Angeles Chargers+2500Cleveland Browns+4000Cincinnati Bengals+5000Indianapolis Colts+6000Las Vegas Raiders+6000New Orleans Saints+6000Minnesota Vikings+8000Pittsburgh Steelers+8000Seattle Seahawks+8000Denver Broncos+10000Philadelphia Eagles+10000San Francisco 49ers+13000Carolina Panthers+15000Washington Football Team+30000New York Giants+50000Atlanta Falcons+50000Miami Dolphins+50000Chicago Bears+50000Jacksonville Jaguars+50000Detroit Lions+100000Houston Texans+100000New York Jets+100000C Jackson Cowart is a sports betting writer at theScore. Steelers place Fitzpatrick on COVID-19 list
The Pittsburgh Steelers placed safety Minkah Fitzpatrick on the COVID-19 list, the team announced Monday.Fitzpatrick tested positive for the virus, a source told ESPN's Kimberley A. Martin. He joins Ben Roethlisberger on the COVID-19 list. The veteran quarterback missed Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions as a result.Fitzpatrick's availability for this week's matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers is now in some jeopardy. He's vaccinated, according to Dale Lolley of DK Pittsburgh Sports, so he can return in less than 10 days if he's asymptomatic and can produce two negative tests 24 hours apart. The two-time All-Pro safety has been a key fixture in the Steelers' secondary since being acquired in a trade during the 2019 season. He's recorded nine interceptions in 39 games with Pittsburgh. Fitzpatrick has yet to grab an interception this season, but he does lead the team with 64 tackles.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NFL Week 10 betting takeaways: Who wants the top spot in the ratings?
Week 9's insanity carried over to the controlled chaos of Week 10.Good NFL bettors love controlled chaos. It's what creates value week to week. While everyone else takes what happened the previous week, or in short sample sizes, to be set in stone, our level-headed approach will reveal the overreactions that we'll take advantage of.Here are the ratings, followed by why we're making adjustments to some teams and not to others.TEAMRATINGRANGEBuccaneers7765-85Bills7450-80Cowboys6945-80Rams6960-75Packers6860-75Cardinals6855-75Ravens6755-75Chiefs6645-80Chargers6650-75Patriots6240-70Browns6155-75Titans5850-65Saints5645-65Vikings5545-6049ers5450-65Bengals5435-70Colts5135-60Seahawks5040-70Panthers4935-55Broncos4740-55Steelers4640-60Raiders4635-55Eagles4530-60Washington4340-55Bears4235-55Falcons3925-50Dolphins3930-55Giants3730-50Jaguars3225-40Lions2620-35Jets2520-35Texans2015-30Who's the favorite?I'd make the case the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would still be favored on a neutral field against the teams below them. They've lost back-to-back games around their bye week, but that's just them playing to the bottom of their range due to key absences on offense and a cluster of injuries in the secondary. I'm only dropping their average rating by one, down to 77, because I think they're the best team in the league when at full strength. Plus, no one else seems to want to grab the mantle. The Baltimore Ravens lost to the Miami Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills still have that odor of their defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Dallas Cowboys are all over the map, and the Los Angeles Rams just lost to a Derrick Henry-less Tennessee Titans team at home. However, I'll bump the Kansas City Chiefs back up because their defense is much-improved with Chris Jones back and a few other personnel moves.Pumping the brakesThe uber-consistent Green Bay Packers move up a tick, but, like Kansas City, they'll head upward if the defense continues to excel. A shutout of the Seattle Seahawks is impressive, but no one was drooling over Green Bay when that game was 3-0 for seemingly forever. For the second straight week, the Titans' run game wasn't there. Instead, they relied on a fumbled kickoff return, two missed extra points, and as dubious of a roughing the passer penalty you'll ever see extending a drive. Those are things that are hard to envision all going the Titans' way in their next closely lined game. The Arizona Cardinals couldn't sustain their effort, but that just means they're human. Many teams are up one week and down the next. The Cleveland Browns fall into that category with a no-show after showing out. The Los Angeles Chargers fell at home to the Minnesota Vikings, so concern levels are rising with Brandon Staley's group. But you know what that means - there'll likely be value on Los Angeles next week.Unsurprisingly, given who their coach is, the Patriots remain consistent, raising the low-end of their range. But how high can we go with their average rating?Despite Russell Wilson's return, we wouldn't see Seattle as just 3-point underdogs in Green Bay if that game was played again. We were reminded that the Seahawks weren't particularly good before Wilson went out, and his injury appeared to linger. The Carolina Panthers get a bump as the Sam Darnold experiment is over. While Cam Newton's return gave them a jolt for one week, a healthy Christian McCaffrey and a good defense are enough to project them back to league average.Grim realitiesPittsburgh Steelers fans will excuse a tie with the Detroit Lions, as they were without Ben Roethlisberger. But the market determined he was worth just two points when the line moved from PIT -8 to PIT -6 on Saturday night's announcement that Mason Rudolph would start. The Lions found one play that worked and ran it enough to almost get them their first win.The air might be coming out of the Las Vegas Raiders. Their defense looks a lot like it has in years' past, while the offense struggled in a spot where many expected them to have success. They need to be dipped back under league average. Are the Jaguars officially frisky? The Indianapolis Colts take a downgrade in victory, and the Jags move up a little, as Indy used the strength of a punt-block touchdown to cling to a win at home against Jacksonville. The Washington Football Team was impressive in closing out the defending champs, but Chase Young's injury leaves a gaping hole in its already suspect defense. So, even in the win, Washington's rating drops a little. The Philadelphia Eagles proved they should've never opened as 3-point underdogs against the Denver Broncos. The line plummeting to PK before kickoff was warranted, as you would've known beforehand if you'd consulted these ratings.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Washington's Young out for season with torn ACL
Washington Football Team defensive end Chase Young will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL in Sunday's win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coach Ron Rivera confirmed Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Young walked off the field under his own power Sunday after going down to the ground in pain during the second quarter. However, he was spotted on crutches in the second half and didn't return to the game.Young, 22, recorded 26 tackles, three tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks through nine contests this campaign. The 2020 second overall selection was named Defensive Rookie of the Year last season after racking up 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and 10 tackles for loss.Washington is also without pass-rusher Montez Sweat, who's on injured reserve with a fractured jaw.The NFC East club will now likely employ a defensive end rotation that includes Shaka Toney, James Smith-Williams, and Casey Toohill.Washington will take on head coach Ron Rivera's former club, the Carolina Panthers, on Sunday.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Newton to receive majority of 1st-team reps, could start vs. Washington
Cam Newton's first start since rejoining the Carolina Panthers could come in Week 11.Head coach Matt Rhule said Monday that Newton will receive the majority of the first-team reps in practice this week ahead of Sunday's game against the Washington Football Team, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Rhule said Newton will only start in Week 11 if he's ready, according to team reporter Darin Gantt. If he's not, P.J. Walker will be under center versus Washington, per Steve Reed of The Associated Press.Newton, who signed with the Panthers on a reported one-year deal last week, had an eventful return in the 34-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Serving as the backup, Newton scored on each of his first two touches: a two-yard score near the goal line and a short pass to Robby Anderson. Newton finished with nine snaps played. If he does receive the start Sunday, it'd be Newton's first with the Panthers since Week 2 of the 2019 season. The Week 11 contest would also see the former No. 1 overall pick go up against his former coach, Ron Rivera. The Washington headmaster spent 2011-2019 in Carolina and used his first pick with the franchise on Newton.Newton is expected to play a big role for the 5-5 Panthers as they try to make a push for a playoff spot.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Packers' Jones out 1-2 weeks with minor MCL sprain
Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones is expected to miss one-to-two weeks after an MRI revealed he suffered a "mild" MCL sprain in Sunday's win over the Seattle Seahawks, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Packers are on the road against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11 and host the Los Angeles Rams in Week 12 before entering their bye, so it's possible Jones won't return until Week 14.A.J. Dillon replaced Jones in the 17-0 victory Sunday, finishing the game with 128 scrimmage yards and two rushing touchdowns. He'll start in Jones' absence, while Patrick Taylor should take on an expanded role.Jones has dealt with MCL sprains before, missing time with the injury in 2017 and in 2018.The 26-year-old leads Green Bay with 541 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 10 appearances.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Yes, Henry has played two fewer games, but Taylor has done most of his damage in the last month by rushing for 100 or more yards in four of his last five contests. Rams-49ers best bets: Can L.A. bounce back in San Fran?
There will be a real sense of urgency from NFC West rivals Monday night as the Los Angeles Rams aim to rebound from a dismal showing on prime time a week ago when they visit the San Francisco 49ers who are essentially playing to keep their season alive. Here's how we're betting Rams-49ers:C Jackson Cowart: Rams -3.5Both teams are coming off embarrassing losses in Week 9 - the Rams were blown out by the Titans, while the 49ers were bested by the Colt McCoy-led Cardinals - but that's where the similarities end.Entering last week's loss, Los Angeles had won each of its previous four games by nine points or more and was clicking on both sides, averaging 32.5 points on offense and holding opponents to just 17.3 points per game. Conversely, the Niners have lost five of their last six contests and are a brutal 2-6 ATS amid an injury-plagued season. The key on Monday will be whether San Francisco can prevent the big play. The 49ers surrendered two passes of 45-plus yards a week ago, while Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford ranks third in the NFL in yards per attempt (8.6) and yards per completion (12.7). If he can get behind the Niners' defense in this one, it won't be close.Alex Moretto: Eli Mitchell anytime TD (+150)The Rams have a reputation - likely due to the presence of Aaron Donald - that they can't be run on, but that's really not the case. Their overall numbers are strong because most of their opponents have had to surrender the run in negative game scripts, but L.A. is still giving up 4.1 yards per carry to opposing running backs. It's important to note that I like the 49ers here to cover anything above a field goal, so I don't expect them to have to get away from the ground game at any point. In the Rams' two losses this season, they've allowed three rushing touchdowns and 244 total yards to opposing backs. With a good game script, in a contest with a high total, there will be plenty of opportunities for Eli Mitchell to find the end zone. With the backfield all to himself, Mitchell continues to make the most of his opportunities. He's averaging a terrific 5.3 yards per carry and is growing more involved in the passing game. Kyle Shanahan's scheme seems to give the Rams trouble - San Francisco has won four straight against Los Angeles - and I like Mitchell to find pay dirt here as he continues to operate as the feature back. You almost never get feature backs at plus money in this market.Matt Russell: 49ers moneyline (+155)Yep, I'm skipping the points here.Well, actually, I'm taking +3.5 too, but the point is I'm relatively confident that, at a +155 payout, the moneyline is the best bet for this game.No matter the situation over the past two seasons, the 49ers have managed to beat the Rams. Whether home or away, with Nick Mullens or Jimmy Garoppolo, and with a laundry list of injuries, they've won four straight. This would be lined under a field goal if it weren't for everyone's disappointment in San Francisco after its shameful loss to the Cardinals' backups. That means the moneyline should be around +125, so anything over +150 is the definition of value.Look for the 49ers' misdirection offense to create holes for the run game and room in the secondary for George Kittle and Deebo Samuel, which they've grown accustomed to when Kyle Shanahan call plays against the Rams.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Arians upset after loss to Washington: 'We're a very dumb football team'
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians can't stand the way his team has been performing after it suffered a second straight loss in Week 10 against the Washington Football Team. The reigning champions, who committed 11 penalties versus the New Orleans Saints in Week 8, again shot themselves in the foot with costly flags Sunday."It has nothing to do with ability. It's about execution and being a smart football team. We're a very dumb football team. And that's a reflection on the coaches," Arians said after the 29-19 defeat, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine.Tampa Bay had a rough start versus Washington, with tight end O.J. Howard jumping offside on the first scrimmage play of the game. The Bucs then had two neutral-zone infraction penalties on third downs late in the second quarter, helping Washington extend its drive and eventually kick a field goal.Coming off a bye, the Buccaneers finished with six total penalties."Energy and passion are very fixable," Arians added. "The penalties - they've gotta get corrected sooner or later. The first play of the game - they're shifting and we jump offsides. They don't even run a play and we jump offsides. The stupidity has to go away if we're gonna go anywhere."The Bucs, who entered the game as the NFL's No. 1 passing team, also struggled to move the ball in the air against Washington. Quarterback Tom Brady finished with 220 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.Additionally, Tampa Bay saw its receivers drop three passes, giving the team 15 total drops this year."It's very disappointing," Arians said. "It's very alarming to watch the energy at every practice and show up with a lack of execution and energy that it takes to win on Sunday. We've got a lot of soul-searching to do."Brady and Co. recorded only 273 total yards and 14 first downs Sunday, both season lows. The 6-3 Bucs will try to snap their skid in Week 11 against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. He was listed as questionable and didn't return to the contest with the Patriots up 31-7 at the time.Head coach Kevin Stefanski said postgame that Mayfield was healthy enough to return, but he opted to keep the signal-caller on the sideline, according to Ben Axelrod of WKYC 3News."Baker's a competitor. Just didn't feel it was the right thing to put him back out there," Stefanski said.Mayfield assured that postgame X-rays showed no structural damage, according to ESPN's Jake Trotter."Pretty beat up right now," Mayfield added, per Baillie Burmaster of Cleveland 19 News.Case Keenum replaced Mayfield, who entered the game with a left shoulder injury and a foot issue. Young refused to exit on a medical cart before limping off the field with the help of team trainers, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine.
Murray, Hopkins out vs. Panthers
The Arizona Cardinals will once again be without quarterback Kyler Murray and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins.Arizona deemed the star duo inactive for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, marking the pair's second straight week on the sideline. Murray has been bothered by an ankle injury while Hopkins has been battling a hamstring ailment. Both players struggled to ramp up their practice participation ahead of Sunday's game; Murray was limited Friday, and Hopkins didn't take part at any point through the week. The Cardinals managed to secure a Week 9 victory without Murray and Hopkins, cruising to a 31-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Colt McCoy started under center while Christian Kirk led the team in receiving.McCoy will once again be tasked with leading Arizona's offense in Sunday's bout against the Panthers. The Cardinals own the best record in the NFL at 8-1.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Beckham may return punts on MNF vs. 49ers
Odell Beckham Jr. is still getting up to speed with the Los Angeles Rams, but Rams head coach Sean McVay apparently wants to get the ball in his new weapon's hands however he can.The star wide receiver, who signed with the Rams on Thursday, could be used as an occasional punt returner Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers as part of a package of plays designed for him, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. It will be surprising if L.A. opts to use Beckham as a returner after fellow wideout Robert Woods tore his ACL at practice Friday, weakening what was poised to be one of the NFL's strongest receiving corps.Beckham, 29, only returned one punt in his two-and-half-year stint with the Cleveland Browns. But he did rack up 21 punt returns during his star-making rookie season with the New York Giants in 2014.The Rams reportedly beat out the Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints, and Seattle Seahawks for Beckham, whom the Browns released after their relationship soured over the trade deadline.Beckham reportedly signed a one-year, incentive-laden deal worth up to $4.5 million with Los Angeles.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc.
