Dolphins' Fuller out indefinitely with personal issue
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Will Fuller is away from the team because of a personal issue and there's no timetable for his return, head coach Brian Flores said Friday, according to the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson.Fuller missed practice Friday after leaving the team facility the day before. He was on track to make his Dolphins debut in Week 2 after sitting out the opener to complete a suspension he received last year for failing a drug test."One day at a time," Flores told reporters. "He has my support. Things happen. When they happen, they're not part of normal every day, it's a surprise from that standpoint. He's dealing with it. We'll support him."Miami signed Fuller to a one-year, $10-million contract in free agency, prying him away from the Houston Texans. Fuller posted career highs in receptions (53), receiving yards (879), and touchdowns (eight) last year in 11 games, but the failed drug test put the validity of those numbers in question.Flores said the Dolphins intend to keep Fuller on the 53-man roster, allowing him to return to the team at any time. The Dolphins are 1-0 entering Sunday's affair with the Buffalo Bills.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. 49ers OC: Sermon showing 'extra focus, aggressiveness' after benching
San Francisco 49ers running back Trey Sermon is working hard to get back into his coaching staff's good graces. The third-round draft choice was a surprise healthy inactive for the 49ers' season opener against the Detroit Lions, and when starter Raheem Mostert went down with an injury, San Francisco turned to sixth-round selection Elijah Mitchell. That decision appears to have had the desired effect on Sermon."I didn't talk to him about it, but I can tell you that the best way I know how he felt is by how he practiced this week," 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel said, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. "There was a deliberate intent and an extra focus to him, an extra aggressiveness that I think his teammates felt. So what that told me is, 'Hey, I didn't like not dressing. I want to play football. So how do I do that? I don't go and talk to people. I show people.'"Mostert is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Sermon will get the chance to try to wrest the job from Mitchell and JaMycal Hasty when the Niners visit the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday."That's kind of the common denominator. (Head coach Kyle Shanahan) always says to the players and coaches, 'Don't tell me, show me.' And he showed I think all of us that he really wants an opportunity, which he'll get this Sunday," McDaniel said.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Giants' Jones: Golladay outburst wasn't directed at me
New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones doesn't believe Kenny Golladay targeted him with his sideline tantrum during Thursday Night Football."I think he was frustrated with the situation, but I don't think it was to me or anyone in particular," Jones said after the Giants' heartbreaking 30-29 loss to the Washington Football Team. "We're all good. I love Kenny, I thought he played hard and did a lot of good things out there."Golladay was seen shouting in Jones' direction late in the fourth quarter after the Giants responded to a Washington go-ahead touchdown with an uneventful series that yielded a punt.
Washington's Heinicke: I've earned the right to keep the starting job
Taylor Heinicke won his first NFL game as a starter after a thrilling back-and-forth Thursday matchup with the New York Giants, and the Washington Football Team quarterback believes he should remain under center when Ryan Fitzpatrick is ready to return."I do. And I have confidence that I can do it," said Heinicke when NFL Network's Michael Irvin asked if the signal-caller believes he's earned the right to keep the job. "If those guys in the locker room and the facility believe in me, that's all that matters, and I think they do."Fitzpatrick, who joined the NFC East club this past offseason on a one-year deal, is facing a six-to-eight-week absence after suffering a hip subluxation during the team's season opener.Heinicke will therefore get significant time to keep building his case to be Washington's permanent starter. The 28-year-old went 34-of-46 passing for 336 yards and two touchdowns against one interception during a 30-29 win over the Giants.Heinicke's lone turnover did come at a critical point. With Washington at its own 22-yard line and trying to close out the game, cornerback James Bradberry intercepted the passer's short throw. The Giants reclaimed the lead shortly after when Graham Gano kicked a field goal. But Heinicke rallied Washington and advanced the offense into field-goal range over the final two minutes with several clutch plays. Dustin Hopkins sealed the win for the team after a penalty nullified an initial miss.Wide receiver Terry McLaurin was Heinicke's go-to target, finishing with 11 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown. He wasn't surprised Heinicke bounced back after the late turnover to earn the victory.“He's always ready for his moment, and I love guys who are always ready for their moment, always prepared," McLaurin said, according to Nicki Jhanvala of The Washington Post. "When you got a guy like that, you just want to continue to make plays for him."Heinicke became a fan favorite after starting for an injured Alex Smith during last year's wild-card round loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He helped Washington stay within two points entering the fourth quarter before the Bucs pulled away late for a 31-23 win.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Rodgers: 'We're in big trouble' if we freak out after Week 1 blowout loss
Aaron Rodgers warned against overreacting after the New Orleans Saints blew out the Green Bay Packers 38-3 in Week 1.The veteran quarterback cautioned that adjusting the team's preparation based on the shocking result would be an unnecessary reaction due to Green Bay's history of success."We won a lot of games around here, we lost a few, but you move on," Rodgers said Thursday. "Doesn't matter if you play incredible and put up 50, or you get blown out, you move on to the next opponent."There shouldn't be some big drastic change and alteration to the way we do things, the way we practice, the way we prepare. If it's good enough to get you to this point, then it's good enough from this point forward. ... Obviously, we got to play better. But if we're starting to freak out after one week, we're in big trouble."The 2020 MVP failed to get into the end zone in Week 1, throwing for just 133 yards and two interceptions while also finishing with a 36.8 passer rating. The Packers also allowed 171 rushing yards and failed to register a turnover Sunday, while the Saints generated three takeaways of their own. While not happy with the club's showing, Rodgers reiterated the need to move on."It's not acceptable, but it's just one game," the quarterback noted. "We're not going to be held prisoner mentally by that poor performance."Green Bay will have the chance to get its first win of the season Monday night against the Detroit Lions.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Higgins changing number after season: I don't want to be 'Ochocinco 2.0'
Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins plans to change his number from No. 85 to No. 5, the number he wore at Clemson, after the 2021 season, according to ESPN's Ben Baby. The No. 85 jersey was most famously worn in Cincinnati by Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson, who spent a decade with the Bengals and recorded the most receptions (751), yards (10,783), and touchdowns (66) in franchise history."I keep seeing on Twitter, 'Ochocinco 2.0,'" Higgins said Thursday. "I don't want to be a 2.0. No disrespect to Chad. He's a great receiver, this and that. I just don't want to be a 2.0 for myself, man. I want to be Tee Higgins, 1.0, No. 5."Higgins told Ian Hartitz of Pro Football Focus earlier in September that he would change his number after scoring 10 touchdowns, but he changed his mind and will switch at the end of 2021 regardless. The NFL prohibits changing numbers midseason."I just got a good feeling that (Ochocinco's) number is gonna get lifted one day," the second-year wideout said, according to Baby.Higgins made four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals' season opener against the Vikings.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Ravens' Westry expected to miss at least a month with torn meniscus
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Chris Westry is expected to miss at least a month with a torn lateral meniscus, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.Injuries have plagued the Ravens to start the campaign. Pro Bowl cornerback Marcus Peters tore his ACL in practice last week, while the team's top three running backs - J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards, and Justice Hill - also suffered season-ending ailments prior to the beginning of the regular season. In order to reinforce a unit that was considered one of the team's strengths entering the season, Baltimore worked out four cornerbacks Tuesday, including Buster Skrine, per ESPN's Jamison Hensley.Westry was the No. 3 cornerback in snaps behind Marlon Humphrey and Anthony Averett in Baltimore's overtime loss Monday to the Las Vegas Raiders. Veteran Jimmy Smith was inactive due to an ankle injury. The Ravens' undermanned secondary will be tasked with stopping Patrick Mahomes' high-flying Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bieniemy brushes off USC rumors, focused on matchup with Ravens
Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been linked to the vacant head coaching job at USC, but he didn't acknowledge the rumors at his press conference Thursday."You guys know me, I am where my feet are. So when it's all said and done with, I am focused on the task at hand," Bieniemy said. "I am not worried about anything or where my name is being mentioned. My job right now is to make sure that we're preparing for this weekend's opponent."Bieniemy is expected to emerge as a candidate for the USC opening and has told those close to him that joining the Trojans is one of the only college gigs he'd consider, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. However, he reaffirmed that his focus is on the Chiefs' upcoming game."If USC reached out to me right now, my answer would be I am preparing for this team to play against the Baltimore Ravens, and that's how I roll," he said. The Chiefs play-caller has ties to the West Coast. He attended high school in California and spent three years as a running backs coach at UCLA from 2003 to 2005.Bieniemy is in his ninth season on Andy Reid's coaching staff and fourth as the offensive coordinator. They've fashioned one of the most prolific offenses in football, ranking in the top six in points scored in each of the last four seasons. The 52-year-old is expected to draw interest for head coaching vacancies in the NFL's next hiring cycle, but he's been passed over the last two years.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ravens' Jackson: Sunday's game 'not about me and Mahomes'
Sunday's matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs will give NFL fans another stellar quarterback battle of two former regular-season MVPs.Lamar Jackson has yet to beat Patrick Mahomes after three meetings between them, but despite the possibility of ending that winless streak soon, the Ravens superstar isn't looking at the prime-time contest from an individual perspective."It's not about me and Mahomes," Jackson said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. "Not to me, probably to everyone else. But it's the Ravens versus the Kansas City Chiefs."The Mahomes-led Chiefs have outscored Baltimore 94-72 in their previous three bouts, with the Kansas City passer strongly outplaying his rival in those games:QBComp.%Yds per gameTD passesINTRush YdsRush TDMahomes70.45378.791321Jackson52.6170.3301961"They did beat us three times or whatever, but that's in the past," Jackson added. "I'm not dwelling on those losses. We're coming in Sunday night, and we're going to play."The Chiefs and Ravens have been two of the league's most successful regular-season teams since Mahomes and Jackson entered the NFL in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The two signal-callers have also each won an MVP award in their sophomore seasons. However, while Mahomes has already been able to win one title in two Super Bowl appearances with Kansas City, Jackson has yet to lead Baltimore past the divisional round.Last year, Jackson said the Chiefs are the Ravens' "kryptonite" following Kansas City's 34-20 victory over Baltimore. The 24-year-old is 30-5 against the rest of the league. To win his first against Mahomes, Jackson will have to do something that no other quarterback has done: the Chiefs quarterback remains unbeaten in 11 games in September since the Chiefs drafted him 10th overall.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Cowboys assuming Lawrence, Gregory won't play Week 2
The Dallas Cowboys are getting ready for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers with the assumption that starting defensive ends DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory won't play, sources told David Moore of the Dallas Morning News.Lawrence reportedly had limited participation at practice Wednesday after suffering a foot injury during the session, and the Cowboys added him to the injury report. The ailment's severity isn't known, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Dallas also placed Gregory on the COVID-19 reserve after he tested positive, per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. The injuries mean more defensive troubles for the Cowboys, who were one of two teams without a sack in Week 1. Dallas had only two quarterback hits against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, while Lawrence recorded five tackles and Gregory produced just one.Lawrence is the Cowboys' most decorated pass-rusher. The two-time Pro Bowler, who signed a five-year, $105-million extension in 2019, led the team with 6.5 sacks and four forced fumbles last year. He hasn't missed a game due to injury since the 2016 season.Gregory racked up 3.5 sacks through 10 appearances in 2020 after being suspended for the entire 2019 campaign for violating the league's substance abuse policy.Dallas recorded 31 sacks last year, ranking 20th in the NFL.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 2 Line Moves: Overreaction week in full effect
Last week's column was easy, with the lines getting shaped over the course of four months. Now we get less than four days, but at least there's a data point for each team to work with.As we head into Week 2, our goal is to identify where the big adjustments have been made based on just one game.Saints @ Panthers (+3.5, 44.5)The rare double move! Hopefully, we don't get burned like a corner biting on a fake. The lookahead line over the summer for this game was -1.5, and the Saints' blowout win over the Packers shot this week's line it up beyond the key number of -3. That's too much of a move for my liking. From a total standpoint, the under on 47.5 got hammered in mere hours. The Saints containing Aaron Rodgers and now getting Sam Darnold will do that, along with New Orleans' offensive metrics not quite matching the 38 points the team scored in Week 1.Bengals @ Bears (-2.5, 44.5)It's not a major move numerically, but a full shift from -3.5 on the lookahead to -3 on the opening line and then to -2.5 mid-week is pretty significant. And it's not hard to see why that happened with this game. The Bengals won in Week 1, and the Bears lost. However, the Bengals tied the Vikings in yards per play at home, with both teams averaging 5.4 yards. Now Zac Taylor's outfit visits a Bears team that managed 134 rushing yards against the Rams. While quarterback play was an issue as always for Chicago in Week 1, the Bears' rushing offense fuels optimism this week. Can the Bengals do as well stopping the rush as they did against Dalvin Cook and the Vikings?Rams @ Colts (+4, 47.5)The line for this game in the summer was Rams -1.5. One team won in Week 1 and the other lost, and now the line is up over a field goal in favor of L.A., with the public buying into Matthew Stafford as he injects life into the Rams' offense.Meanwhile, Carson Wentz actually looked alright in his new surroundings during Week 1, aside from a pair of fourth-and-1 fiascos.Broncos @ Jaguars (+6, 45)It was a total horror show for Jacksonville during its lone opportunity as a road favorite this season in Week 1. Now a dreadful offensive line that forced Trevor Lawrence to throw off his back foot more than he did over three years at Clemson gets a visit from the Broncos' vaunted defense. Welcome to the league, indeed. This number was -2.5 as recently as last week, but one game for each team was enough to force oddsmakers to move the Broncos closer to a touchdown.Patriots @ Jets (+5.5, 42.5)This is the week's biggest move after the line reopened. The Patriots were confirmed as 3.5-point favorites on Sunday night, but everyone who watched the Jets' offensive line in Carolina immediately hammered New England, driving the spread up to -6 before some buyback on New York. Those who got the good Patriots number were likely trying to find the middle.Falcons @ Buccaneers (-12.5, 52.5)The league's most disappointing team in Week 1? The Atlanta Falcons. A march from +8.5 to +12.5 against the Buccaneers in Week 2 comes with that dubious tag.Head coach Arthur Smith's debut in Atlanta didn't go how he had hoped, but this Week 2 matchup is often closer than the experts think. I'll be looking to take advantage of this line move, even if pulling the trigger against the defending champs won't feel good.Titans @ Seahawks (-5.5, 54)Another double move! This line moves from -3.5 to -5.5 after a rough Week 1 for the Titans on both sides of the ball. Meanwhile, the total moved in a way that indicates the market believes Tennessee's offense will bounce back, while the defense might not. After the Seahawks' strong offensive showing, the total jumping from 49 to 54 shouldn't be all that surprising.Chiefs @ Ravens (+3.5, 55)There's a move on top of a move with this game. The Ravens were 3.5-point favorites for last year's Monday night matchup, and everyone backing them felt like a fool. Since that wasn't going to happen again, the lookahead line for this contest was right around a pick'em.The Chiefs were able to pull off a win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 1, while the Ravens coughed one up in Las Vegas. The market has readjusted further toward Kansas City. If you're willing to pay the "Chiefs tax," more power to you.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Saquon: Not ideal playing 2 games in 5 days after major knee injury
New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley is putting his surgically repaired knee to the test. One year after tearing his ACL, Barkley will be playing two games in five days when the Giants visit the Washington Football Team on Thursday night."I don't think the schedule is ideal for coming back off a major knee injury to have two games back-to-back, but that's what it is. That's what's in front of me and that's the challenge I have to face," Barkley said Tuesday.Barkley saw just 10 carries for 26 yards and added one reception in Sunday's 27-13 loss to the Denver Broncos."I'm feeling pretty good ... I haven't gotten tackled in a whole year or played in a football game in a whole year. Obviously, I didn't play the full game. I probably played like 25 to 30 snaps, but there's always going to be some soreness," Barkley said of how his body responded to game action. The Giants' offensive catalyst admitted he's still shaking the rust off, but his focus is on getting New York a victory."For me, it's just take it and roll with it, learn from it, move on, get the rust out and get out there on Thursday against a divisional opponent and try to come out with a win."Barkley is currently listed as questionable for Thursday but is expected to play.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Week 2 round-robin moneyline parlay: NFC West teams on upset watch
The plan wasn't to start the season by winning every one of these last week, taking all the monies in the process. Maybe we should have started slow to set a more reasonable bar. With expectations now unfathomably high, I'm unusually nervous writing this, and we're all destined to be disappointed. How it worksWe parlay five underdogs together in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we're going to take 1.1 units and use it to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays, and one five-team parlay. If three teams pull the upset, you'll likely double your money. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win? Early retirement.Who to playMiami Dolphins +150I can understand the desire to take the Bills here. They could be a buy-low candidate following a Week 1 loss in which they probably were the better team. The Dolphins escaped Foxborough and could be a candidate to sell high on.My numbers just can't get to a point where the Bills should be 3-point favorites. The Dolphins have one of the few discernible home-field advantages, playing at home in the September heat and forcing the visiting team to stand on the sunny side of the field. The best I can get to is Buffalo -1, so there's value on the 'dog here.Indianapolis Colts +170Sometimes Week 2 spread betting comes down to "Team A looked bad" and "Team B looked good," resulting in a valuable bet on Team A. I'm not high on the Colts this season. As for the Rams, there's a lot of excitement about Matthew Stafford's boost to the offense, but I won't overreact to a home win over the Bears - especially given the frequency with which Chicago moved the ball into Rams territory. I've got Los Angeles just under three points better than the Colts, so a +170 moneyline is worth a look as part of this endeavor.Carolina Panthers +170I spent last week trying to talk the world into the Saints over the Packers. This week, I'll be talking the world into the Panthers over the Saints. Such is the universe of NFL betting. New Orleans changes roles from 4-point 'dogs to 3.5-point road favorites, and with their Week 1 performance comes a mathematical overreaction. My ratings have an appropriate price of NO -2, so another +170 leg that should probably be closer to +120 is good enough.Minnesota Vikings +175I don't have to tell you why the Cardinals are now 4.5-point favorites. You saw Week 1. But this is too many points - I have it at a fair price of just over -3 - which makes the moneyline valuable at +175. Talk about your buy-low, sell-highs.Tennessee Titans +200Another buy-low, sell-high, as you might notice a theme developing here! The Titans looked hideous on Sunday, but Taylor Lewan will have an easier time this week than he did with borderline ninja Chandler Jones. As much as Russell Wilson torched the Colts, Kyler Murray is a bigger headache for defensive game planners, and the Cardinals' defense in 2021 might actually be better than the Seahawks'. The Titans move the ball just as easily as the 'Hawks in this one, and when the music stops at 0:00, maybe the guys from Nashville have the lead. What to betThe good news is, after last week, we can lose every single one of these the rest of the season and still be profitable. Though why not try to keep the good fortune going? Beckham to miss 2nd straight game vs. Texans
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will miss Sunday's game against the Houston Texans while continuing to work his way back from a torn ACL, head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Wednesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Stefanski said Beckham hasn't experienced a setback and will keep practicing in a limited capacity, according to Nate Ulrich of the Beacon Journal.Beckham suffered the season-ending knee injury last October and wasn't able to participate in the preseason. The 28-year-old is in his third campaign with the Browns after bursting onto the scene with the New York Giants. He produced a career-low 45.6 yards per game over seven 2020 contests before going down.Wide receivers Jarvis Landry and Rashard Higgins and tight end Austin Hooper will continue to lead Cleveland's passing attack during Beckham's absence.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jaguars' Meyer: 'No chance' I'm leaving for USC job
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer shot down speculation that he may leave the NFL for the vacant coaching job at USC."There's no chance. I'm here and committed to try and build an organization," Meyer said at a press conference Wednesday.USC fired coach Clay Helton on Monday, just two games into his seventh season at the helm.Despite its current run of mediocrity, USC remains one of the most high-profile programs in college football.Meyer is one of the most successful coaches in college football history. In 17 years, he accumulated a 187-32 record and won three national championships, two with Florida and one with Ohio State. He stepped down at Ohio State after the 2018 season and spent two years out of football before making the leap to the professional ranks with the Jaguars. However, following Jacksonville's poor performance in a 37-21 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 1, rumors swirled that Meyer could abandon ship for the Trojans job.In his statement on Helton's firing, USC athletic director Mike Bohn said he intends to find a coach who "will deliver on the championship aspirations and expectations we all share for our football program."Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bengals' Chase: 'I'm trying to break every record that I can'
Cincinnati Bengals rookie wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase announced himself to the NFL in spectacular fashion during Week 1, putting a preseason of struggles firmly behind him.Chase caught five passes for 101 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown, during Cincinnati's season-opening 27-24 overtime win against the Minnesota Vikings.Drops and reported issues separating plagued the first-round pick during the lead-up to the regular season. But Chase is now focused on continuing to prove his doubters wrong after one of the best rookie debuts."Well, I'm trying to break every record that I can," Chase said Wednesday on "Good Morning Football," according to NFL.com's Kevin Patra. "I'm pretty sure I can't break every record, but every record that's meant to be broken. So I’mma make my way and somehow break a record here, break as many as I can, as many as possible."Chase sat out of the 2020 college football season after a 1,780-yard, 20-touchdown campaign with LSU the year before. The Bengals jumped at the chance to use the No. 5 pick to reunite the wideout with signal-caller Joe Burrow, who was Chase's quarterback with the Tigers. With Burrow seemingly healthy after suffering a season-ending knee injury last year, Chase says the best is yet to come from one of the NFL's most exciting young duos."I like to tell them, 'Enjoy the show.' That's all I can tell them," he said, addressing doubters again. "A lot of news coming. I've been hearing this since I was young, you know what I'm saying?"But I'm not worried about it. This is my job right here, and my job is to catch the football and make plays."The Bengals will take on the Chicago Bears in Week 2.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Gruden: Ferrell was inactive due to back ailment
There was plenty of speculation when Las Vegas Raiders 2019 fourth overall pick Clelin Ferrell was inactive for the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.Though some believed Ferrell was a healthy inactive and in the coaching staff's doghouse, head coach Jon Gruden said that isn't the case."He's been having some back ailments. His time's coming," Gruden said of Ferrell during his press conference on Tuesday. "He'll return to the lineup probably this week."Even with Ferrell sidelined, the Raiders defensive line had a field day on Monday night. It recorded three sacks and forced and recovered two fumbles of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. Both fumbles led to Las Vegas touchdowns in a 33-27 overtime victory.Ferrell had just two sacks in 11 games last year, and Gruden hopes the defensive end can reach another level entering his third season."Hopefully he's feeling better and can get back to his form that he had earlier last year and his rookie season," Gruden said. The Raiders visit the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Raiders' McCoy out for season after injuring knee in win vs. Ravens
Las Vegas Raiders defensive tackle Gerald McCoy suffered a season-ending injury during Monday's overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.McCoy, a six-time Pro Bowler, was carted off in the fourth quarter after hurting his knee. The Raiders were hit hard by injuries in Week 1.Las Vegas reportedly also lost guard Denzelle Good to a torn ACL, and head coach Jon Gruden said the team is concerned pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue and backup quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered long-term injuries.Meanwhile, it's the second straight season the 33-year-old McCoy has sustained a major injury. He ruptured his right quadriceps tendon during a training camp practice while with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020.The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made McCoy the third overall pick in 2010. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0) Mike Ehrmann / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 1A vintage Tom Brady game-winning drive reinforced how difficult it'll be to dethrone the defending champs, even though their secondary gave up some plays on opening night.2. Kansas City Chiefs (1-0)Previous Rank: 2Even on a day when the high-octane Chiefs were severely outplayed, they still came back to beat the Browns thanks to the trusty trio of Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce.3. Los Angeles Rams (1-0)Previous Rank: 5You couldn't have scripted a better debut for Matthew Stafford in L.A. The Rams are back in the Super Bowl conversation after hitting a wall the last couple of years.4. Seattle Seahawks (1-0)Previous Rank: 8New offensive coordinator Shane Waldron gave Russell Wilson what he wanted - four touchdown passes - and Pete Carroll what he wanted - a heavy dose of Chris Carson - while featuring a balanced attack in a comfortable Week 1 win over the Colts.5. New Orleans Saints (1-0) James Gilbert / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 12The Saints may have actually upgraded from the legendary Drew Brees if this new version of Jameis Winston - five touchdowns, no turnovers - is here to stay.6. Arizona Cardinals (1-0)Previous Rank: 13Kyler Murray and Chandler Jones looked like men on missions in the opener, while DeAndre Hopkins did his thing with a pair of touchdown grabs. The NFC West is tough, but the Cardinals are talented enough to contend.7. Cleveland Browns (0-1)Previous Rank: 6There's no shame in losing at Arrowhead Stadium, but the Browns don't want to evoke memories of their ugly past by coming up short again in Week 2.8. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0)Previous Rank: 19The Steelers validated our concerns about their offense, but we underestimated their defense, which held the Bills to a pair of field goals in the second half.9. Buffalo Bills (0-1)Previous Rank: 3Josh Allen misfired on a bunch of deep balls after flourishing in that department a year ago. The Bills will have to reassess their pass-heavy approach if inaccuracy downfield becomes a trend.10. Los Angeles Chargers (1-0) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 11Justin Herbert picked up where he left off in 2020 and was particularly efficient on third downs versus Washington. Meanwhile, rookie left tackle Rashawn Slater won his matchup with Chase Young.11. Green Bay Packers (0-1)Previous Rank: 4We're giving the Packers - who looked absolutely brutal against the Saints - a bit of a mulligan in light of their success the past two seasons.12. San Francisco 49ers (1-0)Previous Rank: 10While all three of their NFC West rivals enjoyed emphatic wins in Week 1, the 49ers nearly blew a 24-point lead in the fourth quarter to the Lions.13. Miami Dolphins (1-0)Previous Rank: 14Tua Tagovailoa had some positive moments against the Patriots, but we need to see them more frequently before genuinely calling the Dolphins a threat in the AFC.14. Las Vegas Raiders (1-0)Previous Rank: 23The Raiders finally looked functional defensively under new coordinator Gus Bradley. On the other side of the ball, Jon Gruden is going to feed Darren Waller until the cows come home.15. Baltimore Ravens (0-1) Christian Petersen / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 7Baltimore felt Marcus Peters' absence in a big way on Monday Night Football, and it'll be tough to play without him all year. However, the Ravens could've started their season on a winning note if Lamar Jackson had taken better care of the football.16. Denver Broncos (1-0)Previous Rank: 20The Broncos will make noise in the AFC if Teddy Bridgewater continues to play mistake-free football. Denver has enough depth to survive the Jerry Jeudy injury.17. Dallas Cowboys (0-1)Previous Rank: 16Even in a loss, the Cowboys established themselves as NFC East favorites, so long as Dak Prescott stays healthy. The defense still leaves a lot to be desired, though.18. Washington Football Team (0-1)Previous Rank: 15Forget the quarterback carousel, Washington needs more from its heralded defensive line. Against the Chargers, Washington pressured Herbert on 12.2% of his dropbacks, the lowest mark of any team in Week 1.19. New England Patriots (0-1)Previous Rank: 18Mac Jones played well, but the Patriots are still limited offensively without much speed at the skill positions - even after Bill Belichick went on an offseason spending spree.20. Indianapolis Colts (0-1) Justin Casterline / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 17The good news is that Carson Wentz looked like an NFL quarterback again in his Colts debut. The bad news is Indy didn't look like it belonged in the same league as Seattle in Week 1.21. Philadelphia Eagles (1-0)Previous Rank: 26The Eagles will be a problem if Jalen Hurts and Co. can do to other foes what they did to the Falcons. In saying that, the whole world rests on ifs.22. Tennessee Titans (0-1)Previous Rank: 9As if the Titans' Week 1 beatdown by the Cardinals wasn't troubling enough, Mike Vrabel called out Julio Jones for doing "dumb shit" after his disappointing debut in Tennessee.23. Carolina Panthers (1-0)Previous Rank: 25The Panthers struggled to sustain drives versus the Jets and scored only three points outside the second quarter, neither of which bodes well for their chances to compete with top teams.24. Cincinnati Bengals (1-0)Previous Rank: 30It was nice to see Joe Burrow step up in overtime, but the Bengals' overall performance against the Vikings was nothing special.25. Chicago Bears (0-1) Ronald Martinez / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 22The Bears won't go anywhere with Andy Dalton leading their offense ... it's just a fact.26. Minnesota Vikings (0-1)Previous Rank: 21It'll be another immensely frustrating season for Mike Zimmer and the Vikings if opponents keep plowing offensive linemen into Kirk Cousins.27. Houston Texans (1-0)Previous Rank: 32Unfortunately, the Jaguars only pop up one more time on the Texans' schedule.28. New York Giants (0-1)Previous Rank: 24It's Daniel Jones' third season, and he's still fumbling the football. Meanwhile, Saquon Barkley averaged 2.6 yards per carry in his return from a torn ACL.29. Detroit Lions (0-1)Previous Rank: 31The Lions mounted a valiant comeback against the 49ers, but they still went home with what promises to be the first of many Ls in 2021.30. New York Jets (0-1) Grant Halverson / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 29The beginning of the Robert Saleh era featured some signs of promise, especially on defense, but the Jets are still very much a work-in-progress.31. Atlanta Falcons (0-1)Previous Rank: 27The Falcons were manhandled by an Eagles team that many expect to finish near the bottom of the standings, and wunderkind Kyle Pitts had only four receptions for 31 yards.32. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1)Previous Rank: 28We're ready to jump off the Jaguars' bandwagon - if we were ever on it - after Urban Meyer and Trevor Lawrence laid eggs in their NFL debuts against the Texans.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Free Agent Budget (FAB) amounts are set off a $100 salary cap. Only players rostered in less than 50% of leagues are considered.Quarterbacks James Gilbert / Getty Images Sport / GettyJameis Winston, SaintsNext UpRosteredFABat CAR43%$3The Saints dominated the Packers from the opening kick-off to the final whistle, often leading to short fields for Winston and New Orleans' offense and ultimately resulting in five touchdown passes on just 14 completions. So while the final fantasy numbers look great - including an additional 37 yards on the ground - it's important to note that Winston had everything go his way in Week 1. Things might not be as easy over the next month with the Panthers, Patriots, and Washington making up three of the Saints' next four opponents.Still, this was an excellent start to the second chapter of Winston's career and gives us hope that the former first-overall pick can become the best version of himself in Sean Payton's system.Winston's an upside QB2 until we see him prove it against this upcoming gauntlet of tough defenses.Taylor Heinicke, WashingtonNext UpRosteredFABvs. NYG0%$1A hip injury suffered in the opener has sent Ryan Fitzpatrick to injured reserve, with the expectation that he'll miss at least six to eight weeks. That means Heinicke is about to get a long audition to be Washington's starting quarterback moving forward - a job he's capable of winning. After Fitzpatrick left the Chargers game, Heinicke completed 73% of his passes for 122 yards and a score while adding 17 yards on the ground. The performance brought back memories of his playoff loss to the Buccaneers last season, where he threw for 306 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while rushing for 46 yards and another TD.Heinicke's also surrounded by an equally talented supporting cast this campaign, including Terry McLaurin, Antonio Gibson, Logan Thomas, and a solid offensive line.Washington also gets favorable draws versus the Giants and Falcons in two of their next three contests, allowing their 28-year-old starter to ease into his new role.Though Heinicke is more of a two-quarterback or Superflex option, his rushing ability alone should put him on the fantasy radar as a streamer in single-QB leagues.Streaming options: Ben Roethlisberger vs. LV (39% rostered), Sam Darnold vs. NO (15% rostered), Teddy Bridgewater at JAX (11% rostered)Long-term stashes: Trey Lance vs PHI (44% rostered), Justin Fields vs. CIN (51% rostered)2QB/Superflex-only options: Mac Jones at NYJ (26% rostered), Zach Wilson vs. NE (17% rostered), Jimmy Garoppolo at PHI (9% rostered), Tyrod Taylor at CLE (4% rostered), Jared Goff vs. GB (7% rostered)Running backs Gregory Shamus / Getty Images Sport / GettyElijah Mitchell, 49ersNext UpRosteredFABvs. PHI4%$39Every offseason, we discuss the potential of Kyle Shanahan's rushing attack, and every offseason, we advise fantasy managers to stash as many members of the 49ers' running back room as possible. This year the annual turnover came early when third-rounder Trey Sermon was a surprise healthy scratch in Week 1 and veteran starter Raheem Mostert went down with a knee injury in the first half. That thrust another rookie, speedy sixth-rounder Elijah Mitchell, into a lead back role, and he delivered with 104 yards and a score on 19 touches. Teammate JaMycal Hasty also found the end zone, but he saw the ball just twice on the afternoon. After the game, Shanahan explained Sermon's inactive status by crediting Mitchell and Hasty for outplaying him in the summer - an unexpected update considering beat writers failed to notice that unspoken depth chart change. With Mostert now set to miss at least eight weeks on I.R., Mitchell appears to be in the driver's seat to start in Week 2 and potentially beyond. It's still possible Sermon works his way back into the mix, but Mitchell is worth a significant FAB bid in case he ends up being Shanahan's next breakout back.James White, PatriotsNext UpRosteredFABat NYJ33%$4When Tom Brady was in New England, White was a staple of the Patriots' offense. The pass-catching specialist saw 123 targets and 95 targets in consecutive campaigns before Brady's departure.White's role diminished with Cam Newton under center in 2020, and his target total fell to 62 - including just four outings with seven targets or more.In Mac Jones' regular-season debut, White was right back up to the seven target mark, hauling in six passes for 49 yards and adding another 12 yards as a runner.White was also the only tailback who didn't fumble for New England on Sunday, with starter Damien Harris and rookie backup Rhamondre Stevenson each putting the ball on the ground. The former fourth-round pick's fantasy upside is limited, and his main value comes as an option in PPR formats, but with the Pats looking his way again, fantasy managers need to do the same. White's an RB3/flex option who could buy you time until a higher upside back emerges on your bench or the waiver wire.High-upside backups like Alexander Mattison (36% rostered), Damien Williams (5% rostered), Rhamondre Stevenson (24% rostered), and Tony Jones Jr. (23% rostered) should be rostered in most leagues.Risky flex options: Mark Ingram at CLE (20% rostered), Carlos Hyde vs. DEN (16% rostered), Ty Johnson vs. NE (11% rostered), Tevin Coleman vs. NE (31% rostered)Dart-throw flex options: Kenneth Gainwell vs. SF (8% rostered), Phillip Lindsay at CLE (46% rostered), Cordarrelle Patterson vs. TB (3% rostered), JaMycal Hasty at PHI (1% rostered), Giovani Bernard at ATL (27% rostered)Other backups to roster: Chuba Hubbard vs. NO (19% rostered), Darrel Williams at BAL (14% rostered), Devontae Booker at WAS (8% rostered), Justin Jackson vs. DAL (15% rostered), Marlon Mack vs. LAR (9% rostered),Injured reserve stashes: Darrynton Evans (4% rostered), Anthony McFarland Jr. (1% rostered)Deeper stashes: Jaret Patterson vs. NYG (1% rostered), Samaje Perine at CHI (1% rostered), Salvon Ahmed vs. BUF (2% rostered), Alex Collins at TEN (1% rostered), Jeremy McNichols vs. SEA (0% rostered), Larry Rountree vs. DAL (1% rostered), Jerick McKinnon at BAL (3% rostered), Kylin Hill vs. DET (0% rostered), Mekhi Sargent vs. SEA (0% rostered), DeeJay Dallas at TEN (0% rostered)Wide receivers Dustin Bradford / Getty Images Sport / GettyTim Patrick, BroncosNext UpRosteredFABat JAX2%$9Welcome back to the waiver wire list, Tim Patrick.Anyone who read these columns last year knows that Patrick became a weekly regular. With Courtland Sutton sidelined for most of 2020, Patrick was a top-30 fantasy wideout from Week 3 to Week 14 thanks to seven games with either 100 yards and/or a touchdown during that stretch.Yet fantasy managers refused to pick him up for some reason, and he remained available in the majority of leagues.Sutton is back, but now Jerry Jeudy has been lost for an indefinite amount of time due to a severe high-ankle sprain. That positions Patrick - who was already seeing snaps with the first-team offense before Jeudy's injury - to be a full-time starter in Denver once again. With Sutton still getting comfortable after last year's torn ACL, we might see Patrick emerge as the best fantasy weapon in the Broncos' receiving corps until Jeudy returns. At worst, he should be a WR3/flex with significant touchdown upside each week.DeVante Parker, DolphinsNext UpRosteredFABvs. BUF39%$9Parker led all Dolphins receivers in snaps played in Week 1 and finished with a four-catch, 81-yard day.The Louisville product's job was made easier with shutdown corner Stephon Gilmore on the PUP list to start the year, but Parker has shown the ability to overcome tough matchups in the past.Parker's next meeting will be with the Bills and another first-team cornerback in Tre'Davious White. However, Parker posted stat lines of 7-116-0 and 8-53-1 against Buffalo last year - the latter coming with White in the lineup. Will Fuller's return creates uncertainty in Miami's receiving corps, but Parker has a clear path to remaining the group's most productive member ahead of Fuller and first-rounder Jaylen Waddle.Christian Kirk/Rondale Moore, CardinalsNext UpRosteredFABvs. MIN13%/27%$7/$7After Kyler Murray's five-touchdown explosion against the Titans in Week 1, fantasy GMs should be trying to find ways to get pieces of this Cardinals' offense on their squads.DeAndre Hopkins is the unquestioned Alpha in this unit, but A.J. Green's spot in the pecking order is far from guaranteed. After fizzling out with the Bengals last year, Green had another inefficient performance in his Cards debut, turning six targets into just two catches for 25 yards. If that streak continues, it'll be hard for Kliff Kingsbury to justify giving Green more snaps than Kirk or Moore, who both outproduced him on Sunday.Kirk had one of his best days as a pro, catching five passes for 70 yards and a pair of scores. Moore was nearly as effective - minus the trips to the end zone - with four grabs for 68 yards.Picking up Kirk and Moore is a cheap way to invest in this Murray-led attack, and the duo could see their roles grow if Green continues to disappoint. Consider them both WR4/flex plays with much higher ceilings if things keep going this way.Flex options: Sterling Shepard at WAS (39% rostered), Bryan Edwards at PIT (17% rostered), Zach Pascal vs. LAR (1% rostered), Nelson Agholor at NYJ (33% rostered), Cole Beasley at MIA (45% rostered), Emmanuel Sanders at MIA (21% rostered), Gabriel Davis at MIA (8% rostered), Henry Ruggs at PIT (41% rostered)Risky flex options: Darnell Mooney vs. CIN (48% rostered), Terrace Marshall vs. NO (20% rostered), Elijah Moore vs. NE (42% rostered), K.J. Report: NFLPA recommends Josh Gordon be reinstated
The NFLPA has determined that wide receiver Josh Gordon has successfully completed his NFL-monitored treatment program and is recommending he be reinstated, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Gordon is currently awaiting final approval from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell but is ready to play and fully vaccinated, Schefter reports. The 30-year-old wideout applied for reinstatement in July.Gordon hasn't taken an NFL snap since the 2019 season when he was a member of the Seattle Seahawks. The former All-Pro was placed on the NFL's suspended list for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement after re-signing with the Seahawks prior to the 2020 campaign. The former Pro Bowler, who led the league with 1,646 receiving yards in 2013 as a member of the Cleveland Browns, has missed significant time over the course of his career due to drug-related suspensions.Gordon made an appearance this past offseason with the Zappers of the Fan Controlled Football league. In 2019, Gordon appeared in 11 games for the Seahawks and Patriots, hauling in 27 receptions for 426 yards and one touchdown.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: 6 Saints assistants test positive for COVID-19
Six assistant coaches for the New Orleans Saints tested positive for COVID-19, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Saints have eight total cases, including a nutritionist and a player, Schefter reported Tuesday afternoon.New Orleans placed wide receiver Michael Thomas on the team's reserve/COVID-19 list later in the day, according to ESPN's Field Yates.Head coach Sean Payton said at the start of camp that his staff is 100% vaccinated, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.New Orleans' NFC South matchup against the Carolina Panthers is expected to proceed as scheduled, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The coaches' status for Sunday's game is in question, Schefter reports. A team source told Schefter, "We'll be just fine."Due to the positive tests, the Saints are undergoing enhanced mitigation protocols, which include daily testing and mandatory masking for all players, coaches, and staff members regardless of vaccination status, Pelissero reports. The Saints' outbreak is the franchise's latest setback. Broncos place Darby, Jeudy on IR
The Denver Broncos placed cornerback Ronald Darby on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury, the club announced Tuesday.Denver also placed Jerry Jeudy on injured reserve. It was reported Monday that the wideout may miss four-to-six weeks with a high ankle sprain.Darby will miss at least the next three games while on injured reserve, at which point he will be considered week-to-week, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. He suffered the injury on the last series of the Broncos' Week 1 game against the New York Giants, according to Mike Klis of 9 News. The Broncos signed Darby to a three-year, $30-million contract in the offseason. The 27-year-old started all 16 games for the first time in his career last season with the Washington Football Team.Rookie cornerback Patrick Surtain II is expected to take Darby's place in the starting lineup while the veteran is sidelined. A top-10 pick in the 2021 draft, Surtain played just 26% of the Broncos' defensive snaps during his NFL debut in Week 1.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. 49ers' Mostert to undergo season-ending knee surgery
San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert, who was initially expected to miss eight weeks with a knee injury, will undergo season-ending surgery, he announced Tuesday.Mostert was diagnosed with torn knee cartilage after leaving the season opener versus the Detroit Lions. He took two carries for 20 yards before exiting.Mostert, who tallied 772 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground in 2019 when the 49ers went to the Super Bowl, has now had two consecutive seasons cut short by injuries. An MCL sprain and a high ankle sprain limited him to eight appearances a year ago.The 49ers featured Elijah Mitchell in the backfield after Mostert went down against the Lions, and he responded with more than 100 yards and a touchdown. San Francisco also has JaMycal Hasty and rookie Trey Sermon on the depth chart and expects Jeff Wilson Jr. to return from a knee injury at some point this season.Mostert is due to become a free agent at the end of the year. He's been with the Niners since 2016 after beginning his career bouncing between teams as an undrafted player out of Purdue in 2015.With Mostert on the shelf, the 49ers are signing former Lions second-round pick Kerryon Johnson to the practice squad, his agent told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL MVP odds: Matthew Stafford's record debut propels stock
Matthew Stafford never received an MVP vote in 12 record-setting seasons with the Lions. After one game with the Rams, he's among the favorites to win the award. That's how impressive Stafford was Sunday night when he finished 20-of-26 for 321 yards and three touchdowns in Los Angeles' 34-14 win over the Bears. He also finished with career highs in passer rating (156.1) and yards per attempt (12.3) - teasing Stafford's elite upside at the helm of Sean McVay's innovative offense.Oddsmakers took notice. The former No. 1 pick is currently +800 to win MVP after entering the season at +1500 at theScore Bet and as high as +1800 at some shops. Only preseason favorite Patrick Mahomes (+550), who scored four times in the Chiefs' comeback victory Sunday, has shorter odds.Stafford was our best bet to win MVP before the season, and there's still value on him at these odds. This is closer to what he should have been dealing at before the season, and he's since put on a dazzling display against a Chicago defense that finished as a top-10 unit in three consecutive seasons. His passer rating - just shy of a perfect 158.3 - was the highest by any quarterback in his first game with a new team in NFL history. He also became the first QB to throw two 50-yard touchdowns in his team debut since 1968. All of that happened in Stafford's first 60 minutes within a new offense, when his execution admittedly wasn't as sharp as it will be later in the year.It didn't matter. Stafford was stellar, and it likely won't be the most statistically gaudy game of his season. After all, he attempted just 26 passes, tied for the ninth-fewest of his 13-year career. He's earned the right to sling it even more as the season progresses; if he can pair Sunday's level of aerial brilliance with a 12-win season or better - something he's never done before - this will be his award to lose. Here are the current MVP odds (shorter than 100-1) with a few players who could threaten Stafford's quest for hardware:PLAYERODDSPatrick Mahomes+550Matthew Stafford+800Tom Brady+1000Kyler Murray+1000Russell Wilson+1000Josh Allen+1400Dak Prescott+1400Aaron Rodgers+1600Lamar Jackson+1600Justin Herbert+2000Jameis Winston+2500Baker Mayfield+3500Kirk Cousins+3500Jalen Hurts+3500Teddy Bridgewater+3500Joe Burrow+4000Christian McCaffrey+4000Deshaun Watson+5000Derrick Henry+6500Jimmy Garoppolo+6500Sam Darnold+6500Tua Tagovailoa+6500Derek Carr+6500Ben Roethlisberger+8000Alvin Kamara+8000Patrick Mahomes, QB, Chiefs (+550)Any MVP list starts with Mahomes, who showed again Sunday why he's a perennial contender - and favorite - for this award. The Chiefs' fifth-year star threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns and added a score on the ground to spark Kansas City's second-half rally against the resurgent Browns. He was also sacked just twice and finished with zero turnovers, which are both crucial signs of progress after his disastrous showing in Super Bowl LV. If the Chiefs' O-line holds up, it'll be hard for anyone to challenge Mahomes' final statistical resume, which could be enough to anchor a second MVP campaign.Kyler Murray, QB, Cardinals (+1000)Here are two competing facts about Murray's sterling season debut, in which he combined for 309 yards and five touchdowns in the Cardinals' blowout win over the Titans: If he keeps up this pace, he'll win MVP, and he almost certainly won't keep up this pace.Tennessee ranked 29th in defensive DVOA and 30th in pass defense DVOA in 2020, which provides context for Murray's sensational Week 1 box score. Still, the fact that Arizona's dual-threat star can do that to any team indicates that he's arrived and is ready to torch defenses as a third-year breakout.Russell Wilson, QB, Seahawks (+1000)"Let Russ Cook" has been a rallying cry for Seahawks fans and MVP bettors for years. On Sunday, Wilson only needed 23 passes to serve up 254 yards, four touchdowns, and a near-perfect 152.3 rating against a talented Colts defense in a spicy season debut. We've seen this recipe before - namely in 2019, when his uber-efficient stat line earned him a symbolic runner-up finish to unanimous MVP Lamar Jackson. Maybe the Seahawks' staff loosens the reins on Wilson as the year progresses, but it's clear that Wilson can cook up magic even in a lesser role.Dak Prescott, QB, Cowboys (+1400)Are we sure Prescott should be this far down the oddsboard? After setting an NFL record with 1,690 passing yards through his first four games of 2020, the Cowboys star continued that pace with 403 yards and three touchdowns Thursday against a Buccaneers defense that returned every starter from last year's top-five unit.Even more impressively, Prescott did it while not looking fully healthy early in the game - but that's also the concern with betting him at this price. Can he stay on the field for a full 17 games? If he does, it's hard to find anyone with better odds for the production you'll get in return.C Jackson Cowart is a sports betting writer at theScore. Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke received a major endorsement ahead of his first regular-season start since 2018."I think (Heinicke) can start on any other team in the league," defensive end Chase Young said Tuesday, according to The Athletic's Rhiannon Walker.Heinicke is replacing Ryan Fitzpatrick, who's expected to be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks after he suffered a hip injury during Sunday's game. The 28-year-old passer completed 11 of his 15 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown in relief against the Los Angeles Chargers.Heinicke, who'll be backed up by Kyle Allen, broke out during last year's NFL wild-card round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He threw for 306 yards, one touchdown, and one interception."I think our guys will rally around him," coach Ron Rivera said Monday during his press conference, according to team reporter Zach Selby.Rivera added: "He understands what he has to do and how he has to do it. I'm excited to see what's going to happen."Heinicke, for his part, says he feels more empowered after Washington chose not to acquire a better quarterback, per Walker. The signal-caller says that reflects the franchise's confidence in him.Heinicke and Washington will next take on the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Seahawks' Metcalf, Colts' Blankenship meet after viral tweet
After being turned into a meme last season, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf and Indianapolis Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship finally got the opportunity to meet.A viral tweet in November highlighted the fact that they both play in the NFL, yet have such different physiques.
NFL Week 2 Teasers: A shallow basket to choose from
Last week's teaser basket had plenty of options - 12 of them, in fact. Those went 8-3-1, which is right at the 73% win threshold needed for teaser legs to be profitable long term. However, there aren't as many choices in Week 2.Remember, this is about which clubs you should tease from a mathematically correct standpoint. So, you can generally assume that each leg of a teaser comes at a price of -270, or the price of teasing a 6-point favorite down to PK. Let's use the upcoming battle between the Raiders and Steelers as an example.SpreadOddsPIT ML-270PIT -1-240PIT -1.5-225PIT -2-210PIT -2.5-205PIT -3-185PIT -3.5-150PIT -4-145PIT -4.5-140PIT -5-135PIT -5.5-125PIT -6-110Each teaser leg will cost you -270, slightly shorter than -110 when parlayed together. Adding another leg looks appetizing when the payout moves up to +160, but that's just plugging in another -270 piece to the parlay. Not all teaser legs are created equal. The biggest mistake novice bettors make is teasing through 0. You're wasting valuable price points on a number the game probably isn't going to land on. So, how can we maximize the 6-point move? How can we get what we're paying for at -270 per leg? This week, there are nine games between -3 and -4. Since we don't fully capture enough key numbers by teasing those up, neither side is an option in those contests. Three games have double-digit spreads, and we're not looking to tease big numbers down to -4.5 or -6.5 for fear of a win-but-don't-cover situation. That leaves just four matchups eligible. These aren't recommendations, but rather mathematically sensible options thrown into the "Teaser Basket" to use if you like that team in its game. Take as many legs as you want from this week's admittedly limited basket.Teaser BasketSideSpread6-pt teaser legSteelers-6PKBroncos-6PKJets+5.5+11.5Titans+5.5+11.5What's interesting about these games is they're all within the same point spread. With a small move, the Patriots and Seahawks - who play the Jets and Titans, respectively - could go to -6, thus triggering some teaser value by dropping them to PK.The Steelers and Broncos legs are basically no different than a moneyline parlay. So, if you can find those prices at better than -270, you'd be better off going that route, especially if either favorite moves to -5.5. If that happens, the Raiders and Jaguars, respectively, become the more valuable teaser side, moving them up to +11.5.While you don't have a lot to choose from in this week's basket, you do have a couple of ways to play each of the four games, depending on when you make your bets.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. NFL Week 2 survivor picks: Chubb, Cleveland to cruise against Houston
If you followed my advice in Week 1, congratulations on making it to Week 2. The 49ers largely cruised to victory - although the Lions made it interesting in the final minutes - and if you avoided the Jaguars, you also avoided a devastating early exit.Let's break down the Week 2 slate:AWAY HOME PICK (CR)TexansBrowns (-11.5)CLE (9)FalconsBuccaneers (-13)TB (9)TitansSeahawks (-5.5)SEA (6)RamsColts (+4)LAR (5)49ersEagles (+3.5)SF (5)LionsPackers (-10.5)GB (4)BroncosJaguars (+6)DEN (3)RaidersSteelers (-6)PIT (3)PatriotsJets (+5)NE (3)ChiefsRavens (+3)KC (3)VikingsCardinals (-4)ARI (2)CowboysChargers (-3)LAC (2)GiantsWashington (-3.5)WSH (2)BengalsBears (-3)CHI (1)BillsDolphins (+3.5)MIA (1)SaintsPanthers (+3)CAR (1)Top pick: Cleveland BrownsThere's a tie atop my confidence rankings, but there was no hesitation to give the Browns the tiebreaker here. As I said last week, divisional games are a hard pass for me in survivor pools. The Falcons - who looked terrible in Week 1 - will, in all likelihood, be handled easily by a Buccaneers team at home for a second straight week with extra time to prepare.Matt Ryan looked cooked, but Atlanta's offense has legitimate weapons and is only going to get better under Arthur Smith. You don't have to go too far back to find examples of why this is a classic stay-away game: the Falcons won twice on the road in 2019 as double-digit underdogs, including once as 13.5-point 'dogs in New Orleans. That brings us to the Browns. They lost a heartbreaker at Arrowhead in Week 1 - the toughest game on anyone's schedule this season - but there were plenty of positives to draw from. Cleveland's 8.2 yards per play were the most of any team in Week 1. The Browns averaged 5.9 yards per rush (tied for first) and 10.9 per pass (third). Plus, they led by nine with just over 10 minutes to go and had done a great job of taking away the big play up to that point. Then, Tyreek Hill happened. The Texans don't have Tyreek Hill. It took a near-perfect game from the best quarterback in football, Patrick Mahomes, to narrowly beat Cleveland. The Texans don't have Patrick Mahomes. The Browns' rushing attack was terrific, and Nick Chubb looked unstoppable at times. He amassed 83 yards on 15 carries (5.5 yards per rush), while Kareem Hunt recorded 33 on six. This team is going to be a nightmare playing with the lead, and it now gets a Houston defense that ranked dead last against the rush last season.Even in Week 1, the Texans allowed 4.8 yards per rush. However, Urban Meyer inexplicably refused to hand the ball off early - 13 of the Jaguars' first 15 plays were passes - before Jacksonville got into a negative game script. But if Carlos Hyde can rumble for 4.9 yards per carry behind a bad Jaguars offensive line, just imagine what Chubb can do behind Cleveland's.The Browns are a talented and well-coached team, which poses a nightmare of a matchup for Houston. I told you last week not to pick against the Texans in the opener, and they proved me right. I also said we'd be picking against them soon. To quote Cosmo Kramer, "Giddyup." The fade Houston train is leaving the station.Avoid: Green Bay PackersThe Lions looked bad, as expected, for most of Week 1 ... until they didn't. The Packers looked terrible, unexpectedly, for most of Week 1 ... and they never got better. It's only Week 2 of the league's first 18-week campaign, but this feels like a huge game for both teams.Following a drama-filled offseason, everyone was ready to turn the page on the Aaron Rodgers-Green Bay soap opera. But that chapter is still being written. In an interview with Erin Andrews on Fox's pregame show Sunday, Rodgers admitted he did, in fact, contemplate retirement, saying: "I don't think I have anything left to prove on the field."Those aren't exactly inspiring words from the face of your franchise. There's a non-zero chance Rodgers is still fed up with the organization. He added: "They wouldn't commit to me past 2021. So, I figured if they wanted to make a change, even though I just won MVP, why wait? They drafted my replacement, so let him play if that's what you want."Rodgers also said he didn't think he was 100% able to "commit to everything that my job entails." Are we seriously ruling out the fact that Rodgers' head just isn't in it anymore - at least with the Packers? How motivated and committed is he? Rodgers averaged a pathetic 4.8 yards per pass attempt in Week 1, with no touchdowns and two interceptions, before being supplanted by his "replacement."Now, he faces a divisional foe in prime time with a week of storylines and questions about his relationship with the team clouding his preparation. Plus, the Lions proved themselves to be a pesky bunch against San Francisco. Say what you want about Dan Campbell - the memes write themselves - but his team won't quit at any point this season. He'll strap the pads on himself before that happens.Detroit collected a league-high 31 first downs in Week 1, with Green Bay managing a league-low 14. While the Packers' pass attack faltered, so too did their running game. They managed just 2.9 yards per rush - only the Jets fared worse - while the Lions found some real success on the ground. That's going to be the blueprint for Dan Campbell's team, and it's been an Achilles' heel for the Packers for years now. The recipe is there for Detroit to pull the upset, in what I'm hereby dubbing the Jamaal Williams revenge game. There's a very real chance Rodgers responds to a week of questions by going scorched earth on one of the league's worst teams, but I need to see it before I'm willing to buy in on a Green Bay squad that looked as bad as any in Week 1.Alex Moretto is theScore's supervising editor of sports betting. RGIII tells Washington to 'make the call' after losing Fitzpatrick
Robert Griffin III appears interested in a reunion with the Washington Football Team.Following news Monday that Washington was placing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on injured reserve, Griffin tweeted a video of a 76-yard touchdown run from his rookie season along with the message "make the call."
Gruden: 'Felt like I died and woke up' during Raiders' thrilling win
Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden can't explain exactly how he felt after the wild sequence of events that ended with his team beating the Baltimore Ravens 33-27 in overtime on Monday Night Football."Felt like I died and woke up. And died. And woke up again. I was like a cat, I had multiple lives tonight," Gruden said postgame, according to ESPN's Paul Gutierrez. "We did a lot of good things to win that football game."Raiders wide receiver Zay Jones scored a 31-yard, walk-off touchdown in overtime that gave the 65,000 fans at Allegiant Stadium the excitement they deserved after being unable to attend the new venue last year due to the pandemic.Jones' score came just minutes after Las Vegas blew an opportunity to win the contest with a touchdown in the first possession of overtime. Baltimore cornerback Anthony Averett intercepted quarterback Derek Carr in the end zone on a third-and-goal that started at the Ravens' 5-yard line.Minutes after Averrett's interception, however, Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib forced a fumble off quarterback Lamar Jackson that left Las Vegas just 27 yards away from Baltimore's end zone and eventually led to Jones' touchdown reception.Carr praised his defense after the contest."The thing that I love the most: To everyone that talked crap about our defense for 12 months, they stepped up when we needed them most to get us the ball back so we could win it," the signal-caller said.Carr finished the night with 435 yards and two touchdowns against one interception on 34-of-56 passing.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. LaFleur doesn't think Rodgers' offseason drama affected Packers in Week 1
Matt LaFleur shot down the possibility that offseason drama involving Aaron Rodgers played a part in the Green Bay Packers' struggles in Week 1."No. This team's focused on now," the head coach said, according to NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano. "Unfortunately, sometimes in this league you get humbled. We got humbled."The Packers were blown out in their 2021 season opener, losing 38-3 to the New Orleans Saints. Rodgers noticeably struggled, accumulating just 133 yards and two interceptions. He failed to throw a touchdown and finished with a 36.8 passer rating. Jordan Love relieved the veteran late in the contest.
Ravens-Raiders best bets: What to play for Monday Night Football
Let's be honest, we're all betting on this game. The football withdrawals following the first full weekend of the season are real, and we're going to watch Monday's lone showdown as a result. Here are our best bets for Ravens-Raiders:Ravens over 27.5 pointsThis may be a controversial play after Baltimore's offense was decimated by injuries in recent weeks. Still, in Lamar Jackson's final five healthy games of 2020, this offense averaged 37.2 points and 430.4 yards per game, including 267.4 yards on the ground.Even a cast of Ty'Son Williams, Latavius Murray, and friends should find success against a Raiders unit that ranked 28th in defensive DVOA and rush defense DVOA a year ago. Las Vegas replaced six starters from that group but face a stiff opening test against Ravens coordinator Greg Roman's always-dangerous run scheme.- C Jackson CowartUnder 50.5Are you kidding me with this total? Jon Gruden wants to run the football like it's 1950 and the Ravens are going to do the same regardless of whether anyone's healthy. It's going to be a game of old school football between a pair of run-first teams, and when they drop back to pass it might not be pretty - Baltimore's running thin at wide receiver following a brutal month for injuries, and Las Vegas is breaking in a new offensive line. The Raiders' line will be tested against a blitz-happy Ravens front, but I expect Las Vegas’ revamped defense to be better under new coordinator Gus Bradley. Baltimore's defense lost Marcus Peters amid the rash of summer injuries, but this is still a really talented and well-coached group. The Baltimore defense typically starts fast, too. Over the last four seasons, the Ravens have allowed just 19 total points in Week 1. They've outscored teams 164-19 in those games, but with the injuries, I'm less bullish about that unit starting strong. We might not even see 40 points here.- Alex MorettoRaiders +4Every year there's a top team that just has everything go wrong. If you're looking for early signs of "it's just not our year," it's hard to ignore the rash of injuries that have befallen the Ravens. While the football world considers running back the most replaceable position on the field, at some point losing your entire room for the season before Week 1 has to matter- especially for a run-first squad. Three running backs later and the line hasn't budged.Potentially more concerning for the Ravens are the injuries on the defensive side of the ball. With Peters out for the year and veteran corner Jimmy Smith questionable, life might be a little easier for Derek Carr here. Say what you want about the Raiders' roster construction and consistently scrutinized drafts, but Gruden does a good job putting Carr in a position to move the ball. The Raiders couldn't have had more time to prepare for what Lamar Jackson does best; Bradley, their new defensive coordinator, was with the Chargers in 2018 when they confounded Jackson in the playoffs. With top weapon Darren Waller giving the linebackers fits, and a raucous environment to help the rebuilt defense, I expect the home underdogs to find themselves ahead at halftime. Then it's up to Jackson to lead the Ravens back, and while he may be capable, I'll take the four points for a game that should have us in an advantageous position late.- Matt RussellCopyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Raiders' 2019 1st-rounder Ferrell a healthy scratch for MNF vs. Ravens
Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Clelin Ferrell won't play Monday against the Baltimore Ravens despite having no injury designation, the team announced.Ferrell, the fourth overall pick in 2019, was Mike Mayock's first selection as Raiders general manager. The Clemson product has struggled to meet expectations since entering the NFL, notching only 6.5 sacks and 65 tackles through two seasons.Las Vegas added to its pass rush this offseason by signing defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who will start along with Maxx Crosby. Edge rusher Carl Nassib is now expected to be the Raiders' primary backup in Ferrell's absence.Running back Josh Jacobs, who was questionable for the opener due to an illness, wasn't among Las Vegas' inactives and will be available Monday.Jacobs, the 24th overall selection in 2019, topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of his first two NFL campaigns. The Pro Bowler also set a career-high with 12 touchdowns on the ground last year.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
49ers lose Verrett to ACL injury, reportedly sign Kirkpatrick
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday that cornerback Jason Verrett suffered a torn ACL, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner. The 49ers subsequently signed veteran cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick to reinforce their secondary, a source told NFL insider Josina Anderson.Verrett sustained his injury with less than eight minutes remaining in the 49ers' 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.Shanahan said Verrett is expected to stay with the team in West Virginia as San Francisco prepares for its Week 2 matchup against Philadelphia Eagles. The ailment is the latest in the line of setbacks for Verrett, who has never dressed for more than 14 games in a single season. The defensive back will likely finish the campaign on injured reserve for the sixth time in his career.Verrett signed a one-year, $5.5-million deal with the Niners in March, according to Over the Cap.The California native spent his last three seasons with San Francisco after spending the first five years of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers. In Kirkpatrick, the 49ers get an experienced starter with 113 career appearances and 13 interceptions under his belt. The 31-year-old played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2020 after an eight-year tenure with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Niners have also explored the possibility of a reunion with veteran defensive back Richard Sherman.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bengals' Bates: I'll be playing 'pissed off' after not getting new deal
Cincinnati Bengals safety Jessie Bates III plans to transfer his anger about his contract status onto the field.Bates, who is playing on the final year of his rookie deal, did not receive a contract extension from the Bengals this offseason."I think I'm going to continue to show it with my play and be a little pissed off, for sure," Bates said Monday, according to ESPN's Ben Baby. The 24-year-old showcased some of his rage Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, delivering a few punishing hits and getting involved on a tackle that caused running back Dalvin Cook to fumble in overtime. His nine tackles Sunday led the team.

No team made a bigger jump in the Super Bowl market than the Saints, who moved from 37-1 to 25-1 after humiliating the Packers in a result that (almost) nobody predicted. The biggest takeaway is the stellar play of Jameis Winston, who tossed five touchdowns and crucially finished without an interception or fumble for the first time since Week 2 of the 2019 season. The Saints' defense also showed its elite form, holding the Packers' juggernaut offense to three points and forcing three turnovers. Two of those came on ill-advised throws from Aaron Rodgers, who clearly doesn't look like the same player who won MVP a year ago. Did an offseason away from the team leave him rusty for Week 1? Is the summer turmoil lingering for this group? Green Bay entered the season with myriad questions on both sides of the ball; Sunday presented even more, and it's hard to justify such a short title price (+1200) after what we saw this week.NFC West dominates in 4-0 weekendWe knew the NFC West was likely the best division in football entering the year, and all four teams made their case as legitimate title contenders with stellar Week 1 performances. The Rams, Seahawks, and Cardinals all boasted double-digit wins on Sunday, while the 49ers led by as many as 28 points before the Lions' failed rally in the second half. All four teams enjoyed stellar quarterback play - Matthew Stafford, Russell Wilson, and Kyler Murray look like bona fide MVP candidates, while Jimmy Garoppolo played one of the best games of his career after staving off rookie Trey Lance this summer.San Francisco and Los Angeles were already clear title contenders, though Seattle (23-1 to 15-1) and Arizona (45-1 to 35-1) took a deserved leap into the Super Bowl conversation. All four of these teams are built to win it all; good luck figuring out which one will finish atop the division.Lions replace Texans as NFL's doormatIt seemed hard to imagine that any team would unseat the Texans as the worst in the NFL - especially after just one week. But 60 minutes was enough for oddsmakers to bump Houston (350-1 to 200-1) ahead of the Lions (150-1 to 300-1) at the bottom of the oddsboard. The Texans deserve some credit for blowing out the favored Jaguars (-3), who clearly aren't ready to compete yet with first-year coach Urban Meyer and rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Still, Houston starter Tyrod Taylor showed out with 291 yards and two touchdowns in his debut, and the Texans' defense impressed with three turnovers after recording an NFL-worst nine takeaways a year ago.And then there's the Lions, whose late-game rally couldn't obscure a four-touchdown deficit that exposed the team's issues on both sides of the ball. Detroit's defense, which was inept a year ago, allowed 442 yards and 41 points, while quarterback Jared Goff played like an aimless checkdown artist in his first game away from the Rams, capped off by a fourth-down throw to no one to end the game. Report: Fitzpatrick expected to miss 6-8 weeks with hip injury
Washington Football Team quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks with the hip subluxation he suffered in the season opener, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged Monday that Fitzpatrick would head to the injured reserve, sidelining him for a minimum of three weeks. He said that Washington isn't interested in bringing in another quarterback for the time being, except Kyle Shurmur, who's joining the practice squad.Fitzpatrick exited the team's season opener after taking a hit from Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Uchenna Nwosu. Taylor Heinicke replaced him, and he'll start Thursday against the New York Giants with Kyle Allen backing him up.Washington signed Fitzpatrick to a one-year contract during the offseason after shuffling through quarterbacks last campaign. The 38-year-old managed only six pass attempts before leaving the field. He spent the previous two years with the Miami Dolphins."It is frustrating," Rivera said of the revolving door Washington has had at quarterback. "But hopefully with the situation we have right now we'll be able to go forward."Washington will take an 0-1 record into Week 2 after dropping its opener to the Chargers.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. 49ers' Mostert out 8 weeks with torn knee cartilage
The injury bug continues to bite the San Francisco 49ers.Starting running back Raheem Mostert will be out eight weeks with torn knee cartilage, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday.Mostert left Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions after two carries for 20 yards. Elijah Mitchell stepped in and recorded 104 yards and a touchdown in the 41-33 victory.Mostert won the 49ers' starting job in a loaded backfield, but injuries have followed him throughout his seven-year career. He was limited to eight games in 2020 after bursting onto the scene with 772 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019.Rookie running back Trey Sermon will be active for Week 2, Shanahan said, per David Lombardi of The Athletic. The third-rounder was inactive for the season opener after he missed time during training camp.Shanahan also said he remains optimistic that Jeff Wilson will be able to contribute this season, per Lombardi. Jeudy reportedly expected to miss 4-6 weeks with high ankle sprain
Denver Broncos receiver Jerry Jeudy will miss some time with a high ankle sprain, head coach Vic Fangio said Monday. The sophomore wideout was carted off the field after a defender rolled on his ankle during Sunday's win over the New York Giants."He's definitely got a high ankle sprain. Everything else checked out good. He's going to miss some time. It's hard to put a timetable on it right now," Fangio said.Jeudy is expected to be sidelined four-to-six weeks, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Broncos haven't yet determined if Jeudy will require a stint on injured reserve, which comes with a minimum three-week absence.Jeudy was enjoying a strong start to the campaign, hauling in six passes on seven targets for 72 yards. The 15th overall pick of the 2020 draft was looking to improve upon a rookie season in which he fell short of expectations with 856 yards and three touchdowns.Broncos guard Graham Glasgow was taken to hospital with an irregular heartbeat after Sunday's game but is expected to return to the team later Monday.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lions' Okudah out for season with ruptured Achilles
The Detroit Lions have lost Jeff Okudah for the remainder of the season after the cornerback suffered a ruptured Achilles during Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Dan Campbell told reporters Monday."I hate that for him. He put in a lot of hard work," Campbell said, according to Chris Burke of The Athletic. "He really improved a ton from spring until now."Okudah was limited to just nine games as a rookie due to hamstring, shoulder, and groin injuries. He's now appeared in only 10 contests while making 51 tackles and one interception over his first two campaigns. The Lions will need to rely on Amani Oruwariye, rookie Ifeatu Melifonwu, AJ Parker, Jerry Jacobs, and Bobby Price at corner.Campbell said Melifonwu will be the next man up, and he anticipates the Lions will add another player to their secondary."That's coming, sooner rather than later," the coach said. The Lions will face the Green Bay Packers' vaunted passing attack next Monday night.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vrabel slams Julio for 'doing dumb shit that hurts the team'
Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel bashed new star Julio Jones on Monday after a costly personal foul penalty highlighted the receiver's lackluster debut.Jones was flagged 15 yards for unnecessary roughness in the first quarter Sunday after he swung at Arizona Cardinals cornerback Byron Murphy. The Titans threw an incomplete pass on the ensuing third down, forcing them to punt while already trailing 10-0."Critical mistake," Vrabel said. "That's absolutely nothing that we coach or teach. So, that would fall into the category of doing dumb shit that hurts the team, right there in bold letters. It goes from third-and-1 to third-and-16."Tennessee lost 38-13, spoiling Jones' highly anticipated debut. The 32-year-old wideout managed just three receptions for 29 yards, though the rest of the team's offense didn't fare much better.A seven-time Pro Bowler, Jones landed with the Titans in an offseason trade from the Atlanta Falcons. He and A.J. Brown are expected to form one of the NFL's top receiver tandems.Jones had 771 yards and three touchdowns over nine games last year while battling hamstring issues. From 2014-19, he posted at least 1,394 yards each season and twice led the league in receiving.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
