Report: Cowboys' Collins tried to bribe NFL drug-test collector
The NFL suspended Dallas Cowboys right tackle La'el Collins after he attempted to bribe the NFL's drug-test collector, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Initial reports said that Collins' five-game ban was for missing drug tests. The veteran played in the season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The NFL Players Association was able to negotiate a reduction of Collins' suspension to two games, added Schefter. But the offensive lineman reportedly opted to appeal, and the arbitrator ruled that the league should increase the punishment back to the original five games.Although Collins' lawyer is trying to appeal the arbitrator's decision, Schefter's sources believe the suspension will not be reduced again.Collins apparently argued he missed the tests because one was scheduled on the day that Cowboys strength and conditioning coach Markus Paul died last November, while another was on the day of his uncle's funeral. The 28-year-old will be eligible to return for the game against the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 31.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Dalton could miss 1-2 more weeks with knee injury
Chicago Bears quarterback Andy Dalton could sit out one or two additional games as he recovers from a bone bruise in his knee sustained during Week 2, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Rookie passer Justin Fields will make his first start Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. The first-rounder replaced Dalton in the win over the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing for 60 yards and an interception while adding 31 yards on the ground. On Wednesday, Bears head coach Matt Nagy reiterated Dalton will return to the starting spot when he's healthy.Dalton, who joined Chicago as a free agent this offseason, has completed 73.5% of his passes for 262 yards and one touchdown against one interception this campaign.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: 49ers were Rodgers' preferred trade destination in offseason
When Aaron Rodgers sought a divorce from the Green Bay Packers this past offseason, the San Francisco 49ers were his preferred destination, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports, citing sources. The Chico, California, native will lead Green Bay against San Francisco on Sunday Night Football in Week 3.Upon learning of Rodgers' interest, the 49ers called Packers head coach Matt LaFleur but were quickly rebuffed on a potential trade, as Niners general manager John Lynch admitted in April."You're talking about the MVP of our league last year," Lynch said after the draft."I don't know about you guys, but when the MVP of the league might be available - and I didn't know that, I'm just reading the tea leaves like everybody else and saying, 'Hold on, is something going on here?' Yeah, we inquired. And it was a quick end to the conversation. It wasn't happening."The NFC West club would have been Rodgers' team of choice if the signal-caller was a free agent, Rapoport adds.Rodgers has confirmed he thought the franchise was going to trade him at various points during the offseason. When asked this week whether he believed San Francisco would have dealt for him, Rodgers responded, "There were points where I thought anything was possible. Definitely. But not a strong possibility."The 37-year-old also considered retiring due to his displeasure with his situation in Green Bay. Instead, the two sides renegotiated his contract before training camp. The 1-1 Packers visit the 2-0 Niners, who have veteran Jimmy Garoppolo under center.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Packers-49ers best bets: Is Green Bay a live 'dog?
Eight of the last 11 NFC Championship Games have featured at least one of the Green Bay Packers or San Francisco 49ers, who met there in 2019. Both have legitimate aspirations of returning this season, and Sunday night's meeting will tell us a lot about who we should prepare to watch on Jan. 30.Here's how we'll be betting Packers-49ers:Aaron Jones under 4.5 receptions (-160)Jones made a statement in the passing game last week, turning six receptions into 48 yards and three TDs. Don't be fooled - this was an atypical game for the back, and the 49ers won't let him replicate it on Sunday.Monday's breakout performance was the first time in Jones' last 11 games he logged more than four catches and just the 10th time in 60 career games. It also came against a Lions defense that employed a soft front to guard against Aaron Rodgers' deep ball, leaving plenty of room underneath for checkdowns and designed passes to the flat. That won't be the case for the Niners, who have had success against Rodgers in recent years and saw how poorly Detroit's defense worked a week ago. San Francisco held Eagles backs Miles Sanders and Kenneth Gainwell - two capable pass-catchers - to a combined three catches for 22 yards in Week 2, and will have their crosshairs on Jones in this one.- C Jackson CowartOver 50I bet an NFL prime-time under on Thursday and lived to tell about it. But after one of the worst football games you'll see all season, I'm shifting gears ahead of what has the potential to be one of the week's best on Sunday night.Despite Jimmy Garoppolo's many shortcomings, Kyle Shanahan scheming against a porous Green Bay defense should have fantasy owners salivating - it's a George Kittle day, folks. I'm also expecting this to be a Trey Lance day, at least compared to the first two weeks. The dynamism and dual-threat nature of the rookie quarterback is the perfect weapon to attack a fragile Packers defense struggling to adjust to a new scheme. I also believe Lance's lack of involvement comes partly down to Shanahan not wanting to show his hand ahead of a huge stretch of games, with the Seahawks and Cardinals up after Green Bay.Regardless of who plays - Brandon Aiyuk remains in purgatory and the 49ers might need Frank Gore to start at running back - points will be scored by this offense against a bad Packers unit. But it's not quite enough for me to lay the points, as much as I'm tempted. It's still Rodgers on the other side. He'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays down the field and bail out his defense against a vulnerable 49ers secondary.Settle in, this is going to be a fun one.- Alex Moretto49ers first half -2.5I just can't follow the lemmings over the cliff here. Green Bay is going to be an incredibly popular underdog - which is often the kiss of death. The +3.5 is enticing against a 49ers team riddled with injuries, and the moneyline is tantalizing to play with Rodgers as an underdog. Yet, neither line has budged since it's open on Sunday night. While I think both are reasonable plays, one good half from the Packers on Monday night against the Lions isn't enough for me to assume all is well in Cheesehead land. So, I'd like to back the 49ers, but since I don't want to see Rodgers with the ball in his hands late, I'm going to play San Francisco on the first half moneyline. The 49ers will have their usual scripted plays to start, and the run game will have the team's outside threats stretching the Packers horizontally, creating holes for whoever is healthy in the San Francisco backfield. I also think Shanahan will deploy Lance more than he has all season in the first game that truly matters for the 49ers in the NFC standings.Like the first two weeks, Green Bay will be down at halftime, and it will be up to Rodgers to bring the Packers back.- Matt RussellCopyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Bucs' Brown still in COVID-19 protocol, out vs. Rams
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown is still in COVID-19 protocol and will miss Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Brown, who tested positive for COVID-19 mid-week, didn't travel to Los Angeles with the team. He needed to register two negative tests for a chance to play.Brown ranks second on the Buccaneers in receiving through two weeks with 138 yards, trailing only Chris Godwin. The 33-year-old was quiet against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2 after posting 121 yards and a touchdown versus the Dallas Cowboys in the season opener. The Buccaneers carry a 2-0 record into Week 3 and haven't dropped a decision since the Kansas City Chiefs topped them in Week 12 of the 2020 season.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Dolphins place Tagovailoa on IR with fractured ribs
The Miami Dolphins have placed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve, which comes with a minimum three-week absence.Tagovailoa fractured his ribs in last Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills.Backup Jacoby Brissett is slated to start the Week 3 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.Tagovailoa will also miss a Week 4 date with the Indianapolis Colts and Week 5 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before potentially returning for a road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6.This isn't Tagovailoa's first significant injury. He suffered a major hip injury in his final college season at Alabama. Selected fifth overall in the 2020 draft, he started his first game in Week 8 of last season and completed 64% of his passes for 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 10 contests.Tagovailoa completed 16 of 27 passes for 202 yards, a touchdown, and a pick in a Week 1 win over the New England Patriots before going down after four passes against the Bills the following week.Brissett went 24-for-40 for 169 yards and an interception in the 35-0 blowout loss. The veteran could suit up against his former team next week after playing in 46 games for the Colts from 2017-2020.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. T.J. Watt ruled out vs. Bengals with groin injury
Pittsburgh Steelers pass-rusher T.J. Watt has been downgraded to out for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals due to a groin injury.Watt was initially listed as questionable on Friday after being limited in practice all week. He was close to playing Sunday, but the team is protecting its $112-million investment after Watt picked up the injury in last Sunday's loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport."I think it was a tweak here or there and then tried to push through it," Watt said of the injury Friday, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "Just trying to be smart at the end of the day, ultimately. It's a long season."Watt, a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year last season, already has three sacks and two forced fumbles in less than two games in 2021. He signed a new contract prior to the campaign that makes him the NFL's highest-paid defender.Fellow linebacker Alex Highsmith was already ruled out Friday with a groin injury of his own, so the Steelers will be down to veteran Melvin Ingram and rookie Jamir Jones at the position.Ingram has one sack, five tackles, and four quarterback hits, while Jones has two tackles and one quarterback hit in limited action this year. The Steelers and Bengals are currently in a four-way logjam with matching 1-1 records in the AFC North.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Prescott: 1st game back in Dallas since ankle injury is 'exciting'
Dak Prescott can't wait to feel the energy of the Dallas Cowboys faithful Monday night as he prepares for his first home game since last year's ankle injury."I think it will be more special just because of the amount of Cowboys fans that will be there versus the away games," Prescott said, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. "I mean, obviously, the first two they traveled great and felt the energy and felt that, but just knowing that the support that they've given me over (the) past, I guess, going on a year, was important. (It) was something that I felt."And knowing when I run out there once again, whether it's pregame, whether it's in a moment within the game, just to be able to see up there and know that after (COVID-19) and what we all went through last year, to have them all back - yeah, it will be exciting."Prescott endured a long journey back after being carted off with a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle in Week 5 last season. He's managed to look like his usual self through the first two games despite also missing the entire 2021 preseason due to a shoulder strain he suffered in training camp. The 28-year-old threw for 403 yards and three touchdowns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the season opener, though the Cowboys fell just short of victory. He then completed just over 85% of his passes for 237 yards in a Week 2 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. With a divisional clash with the Philadelphia Eagles set for Monday, Prescott said he'll soak up the reception from the home crowd before quickly focusing on the task at hand."I'll take that moment, I'll be thankful for it, but then flip the mind right back again to the Eagles' defense and what I have to do to win the game," he said.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Saints' Lattimore set to play vs. Patriots after missing Week 2
New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore was removed from the team's injury report and will play Sunday against the New England Patriots, according to ESPN's Field Yates.Lattimore suffered a thumb injury in the season opener against the Green Bay Packers and underwent surgery, forcing him to miss the Week 2 contest against the Carolina Panthers. The star cornerback ramped up his practice participation this week. He was a full participant Friday after being limited Thursday and Wednesday.Lattimore has been the face of the Saints' secondary since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2017, recording 10 interceptions and 56 pass breakups over his tenure in New Orleans. He was rewarded with a five-year, $97.6-million extension shortly after the Week 1 contest against the Packers.Defensive back C.J. Madubuike, Houston among Ravens placed on COVID-19 list
The Baltimore Ravens placed defensive linemen Brandon Williams and Justin Madubuike as well as linebackers Justin Houston and Jaylon Ferguson on the COVID-19 reserve, the team announced Friday.Ferguson tested positive Friday morning, which resulted in Baltimore undergoing contact tracing, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. The vaccination status of those players is unclear, but it's unlikely they will be available to play Sunday against the Detroit Lions.Fully vaccinated players who test positive and are asymptomatic need two negative tests 24 hours apart to return, while unvaccinated individuals are subject to a mandatory 10-day quarantine.Unvaccinated players who are ruled high-risk close contacts must sit out at least five days and can return after a negative test.
McCaffrey out multiple weeks with strained hamstring
Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss a few weeks with a hamstring injury suffered during Thursday's game against the Houston Texans, head coach Matt Rhule told the media Friday.Rhule said he doesn't know if the superstar rusher will be out "one, two, three, or four weeks," according to ESPN's David Newton.McCaffrey pulled up lame on a second-quarter carry and exited the game after just seven rushes and two receptions. He entered Week 3 leading the league with 324 yards from scrimmage. He was also looking to rebound from an injury-riddled 2020 in which he played just three games due to various injuries. With McCaffrey sidelined, the Panthers will turn to rookie Chuba Hubbard and veteran Royce Freeman at running back. The 3-0 Panthers visit the Dallas Cowboys on Oct. 3.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Josh Gordon reinstated, reportedly could be eligible for Week 4
The NFL is reinstating suspended wide receiver Josh Gordon, his agent, Zac Hiller, told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The former All-Pro pass-catcher could be eligible to play as soon as Week 4, sources told Schefter."We are grateful that the NFL appreciates the work that Josh put in and now he has earned another opportunity to be part of this league," said Hiller. "We are proud of Josh, and I know all the fans can't wait to see him on Sundays."Gordon applied for reinstatement in July and the NFL Players Association recommended in mid-September that his suspension be lifted. The 30-year-old last appeared in an NFL game for the Seattle Seahawks in 2019.Gordon was banned for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement after re-signing with the Seahawks prior to the 2020 campaign. Dalvin Cook questionable vs. Seahawks due to ankle injury
Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook is questionable to play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks due to an ankle injury, the team announced Friday.Cook, who hasn't practiced this week, suffered the injury during Minnesota's Week 2 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. He was forced to leave the field multiple times because of the issue, but Cook still produced a strong performance while rushing for 131 yards on 22 carries and playing 77% of his team's offensive snaps. The two-time Pro Bowler has battled multiple injuries since entering the NFL as a second-round pick in 2017. The Florida State product has missed 22 regular-season games over his first four years, including four since 2019.He enjoyed a career year with 1,918 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns over 14 games in 2020.If Cook doesn't play versus the Seahawks, the 0-2 Vikings will likely rely on Alexander Mattison as their main rushing weapon. The third-year runner has racked up only four carries for 13 yards in 2021.On Friday, Minnesota also ruled out linebacker Anthony Barr and rookie offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw for Week 3 due to knee and groin injuries, respectively.Defensive end Everson Griffen, who didn't play last week, has cleared the concussion protocol and is expected to be available against Seattle, according to ESPN's Courtney Cronin.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Erickson of the Indianapolis Star. Reich was shocked at how much progress Wentz has made."I'm very surprised we're even at this point, honestly, because Monday and Tuesday was pretty bad," Reich said, per George Bremer of the Herald Bulletin.Wentz exited last Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams after he was tackled by defensive tackle Aaron Donald.Reich wouldn't name a replacement if Wentz is unable to play in Week 3. Jacob Eason finished the Week 2 contest, but Brett Hundley might also be elevated from the practice squad and split time at quarterback.Right tackle Braden Smith and linebacker Jordan Glasgow were ruled out for Sunday's game.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 3 player props: 11 bets to get you through Sunday
If your fantasy team is 0-2 and decimated by injuries like mine, at least you have betting. Here are the players to back or fade in Week 3.T.J. Hockenson under 62.5 receiving yardsThe Ravens faced Darren Waller and Travis Kelce in the first two weeks, so they're familiar with offenses featuring great tight ends. While those guys had big games, what gives me pause for a third is the Ravens' ability to shut down Tyreek Hill last week. He's not a tight end, but it showed that John Harbaugh's group can create a scheme to blanket a singular threat. Since the Lions don't have an outside alternative to Hockenson, he'll be the focal point in the defensive game plan.Mark Andrews TD +150A rare double-prop game! Mark Andrews has been quiet this season, but the Lions' defense should provide him the opportunity to have a big performance. I'll take him to score at better-than-even money.Kyle Pitts over 52.5 receiving yardsPitts hit his over comfortably last week to give us a season split backing the Falcons' No. 4 pick. The market hasn't made the adjustment we expected, so we're back on Pitts against the Giants. With James Bradberry on Calvin Ridley, Pitts steps up.Jameis Winston under 217.5 passing yardsWin or lose, Winston has gone under this season. The game script in Week 1 suggested the Saints just run the ball on the Packers before, during, and after they took a big lead. Last week, we correctly surmised Winston would be playing from behind and thus throwing often; he still went way under.A.J. Brown over 78.5 receiving yardsCall it a square play here, but we're two weeks into the season without Brown getting loose in a secondary. He and Titans compadre Julio Jones had some drops against the Seahawks, so they'll both be locked in against the division rival Colts, who can't cover to save their lives. Brown has a big game here.Devin Singletary under 49.5 rushing yardsWe nailed Josh Allen's interception prop last week after some inaccuracies flared up in Week 1. The good news is the Bills quarterback has a matchup with Washington's secondary, which gave Daniel Jones more than enough opportunities to be accurate. Brian Daboll will understand that and give Allen all the chances to get right, which means less action in the run game for Singletary, who got 13 carries after an early lead last week.Patrick Mahomes under 306.5 passing yardsHere's a fun one. Normally, when you dare fade Mahomes, you might as well lock yourself in a closet and assume the fetal position. However, the only time the Chiefs superstar has thrown for over 300 yards against the Chargers was in last season's overtime win. Despite Mahomes' 4-1 record against the Chargers, they'll slow down the 2019 MVP.Corey Davis under 42.5 receiving yardsWe called Davis being shut down last week by Bill Belichick's scheme, and that worked out pretty well for the Patriots. Now, with tape on how to stop the Jets' top weapon, the Broncos' secondary is more than capable of following the same script. Davis won't get off the tarmac.Mike Gesicki over 24.5 receiving yardsJacoby Brissett was armed with a handful of tight ends during his time with the Colts. As the Dolphins set up a game plan around their backup this week, there will be some easy throws to a big target, which will be a boon for Gesicki's stats.DK Metcalf over 76.5 receiving yardsThis is pretty much the same handicap as it was for A.J. Brown. We haven't had the "My lord, Metcalf is a stud" game yet. Now, he's got a matchup with the Vikings' secondary, which had minimal answers for the Cardinals' outside talent. He catches a deep one on the way to a big day.Matthew Stafford over 310.5 passing yardsI couldn't choose between Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods overs, so in a way, I'm taking both. The two combined for a ridiculous 23 catches and 275 yards in last year's visit to the Buccaneers. Now, they're at home in what should be a back-and-forth game against a team you simply cannot run on. Stafford will be slinging it.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Hopkins to be game-time call vs. Jaguars

Green is confident his star teammate will be on the field Sunday."Hop don't miss games," Green said Thursday. If Hopkins were to be sidelined in Week 3, Green and Christian Kirk would lead Arizona's passing attack.Hopkins, who was third in the NFL with 1,407 receiving yards last season, has racked up 10 catches for 137 yards and three touchdowns so far in 2021.The Cardinals sit tied atop the NFC West with the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers after winning their first two games.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Buccaneers' Pierre-Paul to miss game vs. Rams
Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul will miss Sunday's game with the Los Angeles Rams due to hand and shoulder injuries, head coach Bruce Arians announced Friday, according to Pewter Report.Pierre-Paul received a second opinion on his shoulder issue and rest was recommended, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.First-rounder Joe Tryon-Shoyinka will step up to replace the veteran alongside Shaq Barrett for the heavyweight NFC clash.Bucs defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is confident the rookie will help keep the defense competitive against the reinvigorated Matthew Stafford-led Rams offense."Honestly, we shouldn't lose anything," Suh said, per Carmen Vitali of Tampa Bay's official site. "We expect Joe to step up and it's something that we've talked about all the time - that at any point in the season we're going to have a young guy and/or someone who is technically a backup to step up and be a starter and play in a role that really is expected for them to have no drop-offs."Pierre-Paul recorded nine tackles and zero sacks through two weeks. Beckham to make season debut vs. Bears
Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski announced Friday that wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will make his season debut Sunday against the Chicago Bears, according to Jake Trotter of ESPN.Beckham tore his ACL in October, and Cleveland took a cautious approach with the veteran, holding him out from the season's first two contests. The wideout practiced in a limited capacity over the first two weeks before participating fully in all three sessions this week. His return comes at an opportune time for the Browns, who will be without Jarvis Landry for at least three weeks after placing him on the injured reserve with a knee injury on Tuesday.Beckham is in his third season with the AFC North club after bursting onto the scene with the New York Giants. The 28-year-old has struggled to replicate his All-Pro form with the Giants in Cleveland, averaging 58.9 yards per game compared to 92.8 yards over five seasons in New York.Beckham wouldn't confirm he's set to play when asked Thursday, but he promised his return is "going to be special."Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 3 best bets: Fade injury-riddled Steelers as home favorites
Different week, same story: I went 2-1 on my NFL best bets for Week 2 after yet another mid-game quarterback injury. Still, the Panthers and Rams came through in a big way to bring us to 4-2 heading into Week 3.Ravens (-8, 50) @ Lions, 1 p.m. ETI'm torn between laying the points or playing the over, with the Lions' putrid defense as my target for both wagers. Personally, I'm playing both, though the Ravens' porous defense thus far makes the over a more attractive play.Detroit's defense was a disaster in 2020 and has been even worse through two weeks of this season, allowing 41 points and 442 yards to the 49ers in Week 1 and letting the Packers' offense run roughshod in a 35-point showing in Week 2. Baltimore should have no problem doing the same behind a potent rushing attack that will decimate the Lions' flimsy front.Don't count out Jared Goff and Co. moving the ball against Baltimore's defense, which has allowed at least 33 points in each of its first two contests, largely due to a banged-up secondary. If this game gets out of hand - as this line suggests it will - garbage time could play a significant role here.Pick: Over 50Bengals @ Steelers (-3, 43.5), 1 p.m.When healthy, the Steelers are a borderline playoff team and a risky bet as a favorite. Entering this week, they're anything but healthy. Thursday's injury report of 10 players was headlined by Ben Roethlisberger, Diontae Johnson, and T.J. Watt, all of whom are questionable to play Sunday.Johnson is the likeliest to miss this week, and his absence would be a major blow for an offense that already looks lethargic with a hobbled Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh's defense managed just one sack after Watt left last week's loss to the Raiders, and it'll need a stout pass rush to fluster the Bengals' offense.Cincinnati's O-line was among its biggest concerns heading into the year, but so far it's held up with the seventh-best mark in ESPN's pass block win rate (64%). Joe Burrow has still been sacked an NFL-worst 10 times, but the Bengals' staff should devise ways to get the ball out quicker against the Steelers' shaky secondary.Pick: Bengals +3Bears @ Browns (-7, 45.5), 1 p.m.I initially jumped on the Bears at +7.5 - which you can still find at some shops - but I'll happily settle for +7 (even) in a matchup between two teams that are much closer than this line suggests. The Bears hung with the Rams in Week 1 but were hamstrung by Andy Dalton's dink-and-dunk approach. It was a similar story last week when they forced four Bengals turnovers but turned them into just 13 total points - which includes Roquan Smith's pick-6. Justin Fields may not be fully ready for the big stage, but he'll bring dynamism and field-stretching ability to an otherwise talented offense desperately in need of both. The Browns struggled to slow down the lowly Texans a week ago and are beatable downfield, as the Chiefs showed in Week 1. They also aren't built to blow teams out. Since the start of 2020, seven of their 12 regular-season victories have come by six points or fewer, and none exceeded a two-score margin. Expect Chicago to keep this one close in Fields' debut.Pick: Bears +7C Jackson Cowart is a sports betting writer at theScore. NFL adding Monday night game to Wild Card Weekend
The NFL is tinkering the wild-card round by ending it with a playoff game on a Monday night.Beginning with the 2021 season, the new Wild Card Weekend format will include two games Saturday, three Sunday, and one Monday night, the league announced Friday.Wild Card Weekend will be held from Jan. 15-17 this year. The Saturday games will be held at 4:35 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. ET, the Sunday tripleheader will take place at 1:05 p.m., 4:40 p.m., and 8:15 p.m., and the Monday finale will start at 8:15 p.m.The league expanded the postseason before last season, pushing the number of participants from 12 to 14 after adding an extra wild-card spot to each conference.A 17th contest was also implemented for the 2021 campaign, meaning the Monday night wild-card game won't run head-to-head with the College Football Playoff National Championship.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. McCaffrey headed for MRI after hamstring injury vs. Texans
Christian McCaffrey is scheduled to undergo an MRI after exiting the Carolina Panthers' 24-9 victory against the Houston Texans with a hamstring injury, head coach Matt Rhule announced after Thursday's game, according to Joe Person of The Athletic.McCaffrey suffered the injury on a carry during the second quarter. He went to the sideline and was examined in the medical tent before being ruled out for the remainder of the game. The star running back finished the game with seven carries for 31 yards. He also added nine receiving yards on two catches.McCaffrey entered the Week 3 contest leading the NFL with 324 yards from scrimmage. The 25-year-old is looking for a rebound season after being limited to just three games during an injury-riddled 2020 campaign. The Panthers relied on rookie back Chuba Hubbard in McCaffrey's absence. Hubbard led the team with 52 yards on the ground while quarterback Sam Darnold also added two rushing touchdowns.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Cameron Jordan criticizes roughing calls: QBs might as well have flags on hips
New Orleans Saints pass-rusher Cameron Jordan didn't mince words when discussing the NFL's rules for protecting quarterbacks on Thursday."Quarterbacks have red jerseys on in practices, and at this point, they’re going to have red jerseys on during games as well," Jordan said, according to Luke Johnson of Nola.com. "That’s just the game we’re playing at this point. We might as well just attach a flag to their hips and go off that."The Saints accumulated 115 penalty yards on 11 calls Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. This included two roughing the passer flags for hits on Sam Darnold during their 26-7 defeat."Seriously, this is a part of the game we have to play. I think it sucks," Jordan said."Eleven years ago when I first entered the league, when you saw quarterbacks being fearful of being hit on their blindside to now knowing that they’re fully protected, it sort of takes away from the game, but again, that’s the game that we’re in right now."Saints rookie Payton Turner was responsible for the first roughing penalty while defensive tackle Christian Ringo was docked for the second call. The latter's penalty occurred during a fourth-quarter scoring drive by the Panthers.Despite the penalties, Jordan notes the Saints will not play in fear and will strive to be more disciplined."We'll correct penalties on tape and try to get better from that, but what you can't do is play with fear in your heart in this game. Especially as a defense," Jordan said. "We're going to have to live with some of these and learn from a lot of them."Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Cowboys' Elliott unfazed by critics: They're not 'signing the checks'
Ezekiel Elliott's performances so far this season aren't what the Dallas Cowboys expected when they signed the running back to a monster contract extension two years ago. He's been heavily criticized for his early struggles, but the former All-Pro runner doesn't seem concerned about that feedback."You hear it, but what really matters is what's going on in this building," Elliott said Thursday, according to Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. "They're not the one signing the checks. They're not the ones sending the wires. So I mean," he continued with a laugh, "I don't think it matters."Elliott, 26, entered this year under pressure after he averaged fewer than 70 rushing yards per game for the first time in his career in 2020. He hasn't been able to prove his doubters wrong thus far in 2021, racking up just 104 yards (3.9 per carry) and one touchdown through the first two weeks. The three-time Pro Bowler took the NFL by storm after being drafted fourth overall in 2016, topping the league in rushing yards per game in each of his first three campaigns. In 2019, he inked a six-year, $90-million extension that currently puts him second in average annual salary among runners, trailing only Christian McCaffrey of the Carolina Panthers.Elliott scored his first touchdown of the season last week versus the Los Angeles Chargers and he leads Dallas with 27 rushing attempts. However, he's been outrushed by third-year runner Tony Pollard, who's amassed a team-high 123 yards on the ground."I see the work he puts in," Elliott said of Pollard, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic. "He's one of the hardest workers on the team, and he's very talented. He deserves to go out there and play well."Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Giants' Judge: Gates' injury could be career-ending
New York Giants head coach Joe Judge couldn't hide his concern Thursday that offensive lineman Nick Gates - who fractured his leg last week - may have suffered a career-ending injury."I'd be lying if, from my perspective, I said no," Judge said when asked if Gates' ailment could end his career, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan."I know there are some comparisons to other players. These things are all different. I know he's going to have the best medical care possible, here or elsewhere, whatever we can do. So, we are confident he's going to be able to come back."Gates remains hospitalized after being carted off with his left leg in an air cast last Thursday against the Washington Football Team. He's slated to undergo additional surgeries.Jon Perzley, the lineman's agent, is optimistic Gates will make a full recovery."Mark my word, Nick will be back in blue next year," Perzley said, per Raanan. "While in some cases these types of injuries can be career-threatening, Nick's situation is not that. It doesn't hurt that he is the toughest guy on the planet."Gates shared a video of himself walking just days after undergoing an initial procedure, along with the caption, "One step closer to getting back on the field."The 25-year-old has started 18 games for the Giants since 2020.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Brady's trainer: Belichick treated QB like '20-year-old kid'
While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prepare for a road trip to face the Los Angeles Rams, their Week 4 matchup continues to get attention.Alex Guerrero, Tom Brady's personal trainer and business partner, said New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick "never evolved" his treatment of the future Hall of Fame quarterback."I think his emotions or feelings never evolved with age," Guerrero told the Boston Herald's Karen Guregian. "I think in time, with Tom, as Tom got into his late 30s or early 40s, I think Bill was still trying to treat him like that 20-year-old kid that he drafted. And all the players, I think, realized Tom was different."Guerrero's comments come just over a week before one of New England's most anticipated regular-season contests, when Brady's new team takes on his former club at Gillette Stadium on Oct. 3.The 44-year-old spent 20 seasons with the Patriots, winning three MVP awards and six Super Bowl titles, all while establishing multiple franchise passing records. He left as a free agent in 2020.Brady initially described the matchup as "like when your high school friends meet your college friends" when the schedule was released. The reigning Super Bowl-winning passer also said he's looking forward to returning to Foxborough."I’m sure it'll be a great opportunity for me to go back to a place I know as well as anyone," he said. "It’ll be a great day for football."Meanwhile, the Patriots will attempt to win their second game of the season when they host the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lawrence still getting used to speed of NFL: 'Everyone is just better'
Trevor Lawrence entered the NFL as arguably the most hyped quarterback prospect since Peyton Manning, but he's struggled to meet those lofty expectations through two weeks. While the Jacksonville Jaguars signal-caller has flashed the talent that made him the unquestioned No. 1 selection in this year's draft, he's also thrown a league-high five interceptions (tied with fellow rookie Zach Wilson) and recorded the worst completion percentage (50%) among all starters."Everyone is just better, especially in technique, fundamentally," Lawrence said Wednesday, according to Brian Sexton of the Jaguars' official site. "The corners are much better. There is not as much separation. Even the touchdown to Marv (Jones) … when I threw it, there was no separation. Marv did a great job of making a play and separating a little bit. That's just the way it is."(I) still have to keep getting used to that and being more accurate. That's the main thing, giving my guys a chance, being more accurate consistently. But I kind of knew everyone was going to be better before I got here, so that's nothing new as far as that goes. I've always had that mindset."The Jaguars, who began a new era this offseason by drafting Lawrence and hiring legendary college coach Urban Meyer, have gone 0-2 to start the season and own the NFL's third-worst point differential (minus-26).The disappointment has been so pronounced that Meyer called on the fan base to "hang in there with us" and promised better results were coming. The head coach was also forced to shut the door on the possibility he would leave the AFC South club to return to the college ranks at USC.Lawrence, meanwhile, is focused on not overreacting to his early stumbles."The thing I have to keep reminding myself is that it's still a game, the same game I've been playing since I was a kid - a game I happen to be good at," Lawrence said. The Jaguars will look to kick-start their season Sunday against the 2-0 Arizona Cardinals.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lions fielding trade calls for Jamie Collins
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed Thursday the team is fielding trade calls for linebacker Jamie Collins, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com.Campbell said Detroit, which kicked off a major rebuild this offseason and has started the year 0-2, wants to reduce Collins' role in order to give other players more opportunity - in particular, rookie linebacker Derrick Barnes.Collins, whose attitude Campbell commended, has been held out of practice and wasn't present at the club's facility Thursday. The 31-year-old led the Lions with 101 tackles in 2020 during his first year with the team. He started Detroit's first two games this season, racking up 10 tackles and one quarterback hit.A second-round pick in 2013, Collins began his career with the New England Patriots, where he's spent time across two different stints (2013-16, 2019). The former Pro Bowler has also played for the Cleveland Browns (2016-18).Collins has two years left on his contract. He converted $5 million of his salary into a signing bonus in March and has a base salary of $3.8 million in 2021, according to Spotrac.Detroit was outscored 50-76 across its season-opening losses to the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Colts could play both Eason, Hundley if Wentz is out
The Indianapolis Colts could roll with a two-quarterback system to cope with potentially losing Carson Wentz. If an ankle injury sidelines the Colts' starter, then Jacob Eason and Brett Hundley might both play in Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans, sources told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.Hundley, who is currently on the practice squad, reportedly took the majority of the first-team reps during Wednesday's practice. While the Colts still hope Wentz can be ready for Week 3, a decision on his status might not come until game day, added Pelissero.Wentz sprained both ankles in the Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Eason replaced the veteran and threw a late interception that helped seal the 27-24 win for the Rams.Eason, a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, has just five career pass attempts and didn't see any playing time during his rookie season.Meanwhile, the 28-year-old Hundley started nine games for the Green Bay Packers in 2017. He threw for 1,836 yards and nine touchdowns against 12 interceptions while adding 270 yards and two scores on the ground.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Panthers-Texans best bets: Will Carolina maintain its perfect start?
Thank God for betting, right? Without it, maybe 50 people outside of Piedmont and Southeast Texas would actually watch this game Thursday night. Here's how we'll be betting Panthers-Texans:Texans under 16.5 points (+100)This is one of my favorite plays so far this campaign, as it pits my favorite early-season unit against the disaster that is the Texans' offense.I was high on the Panthers' defense coming into the year thanks to a wealth of former first-rounders and breakout stars. The unit has delivered through two weeks, ranking first in average yards allowed (190) and points allowed (10.5) after last week's smothering of a Saints offense that scored five touchdowns seven days prior. Now Carolina gets to tee off on rookie quarterback Davis Mills, who missed open receivers left and right in the first 30 minutes of his professional career Sunday. The Texans scored a whopping seven points under his watch in Week 2, and they'll be lucky to hit 14 in Mills' first career start.- C Jackson CowartUnder 43.5One of these days, the under will hit in prime time. Maybe. Overs are 6-0 in prime-time games so far this season, but I feel strongly about that run ending Thursday at NRG Stadium. How are the Texans expected to put up points here? Mills makes his first career start on short rest, and nothing about his appearance against the Browns in relief of the injured Tyrod Taylor inspires confidence.Mills completed just 8 of 18 passes for 108 yards, with three of those completions and 54 of those yards coming in garbage time. Now he gets a Carolina team that ranks first in both points and yards allowed, as well as yards allowed per play, third-down defense, and sacks. While the Panthers have lit it up defensively, their offense has been rather pedestrian, ranking 18th in yards per play, 14th in third-down conversion percentage, and 25th in red-zone touchdown success rate. They'll move the ball against a weak Texans defense, but don't expect them to light up the scoreboard, either. Points will be scarce - at least by this season's lofty standards - on Thursday night.- Alex MorettoTexans +8Despite being 2-0 against the spread, the Texans are an 8-point underdog against the surprising Panthers thanks to an injury to a quarterback very few people were thrilled about to begin with.I've backed the Panthers in their first two games, but even I'm skeptical they should be given the same credit in the market that teams like the Titans, Steelers, Vikings, and Broncos would've received against Houston. The concern is that Mills isn't ready for prime time, but the Texans' veterans have at least shown an ability to execute basic offensive plays. I'm willing to believe Mills has picked up the playbook and can keep Houston in a game against a team with Sam Darnold playing on the road for the first time this season.- Matt RussellCopyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year odds, values: Bet on Oweh after clutch play
Just two weeks into this NFL season, we've already seen some defensive rookies separate themselves. But oddsmakers have been slow to react, leaving some significant values on the board for proactive bettors. Here are the odds to win Defensive Rookie of the Year with five clear value plays to target:PLAYERODDSMicah Parsons+400Patrick Surtain+400Jamin Davis+700Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah+1000Jaycee Horn+1000Zaven Collins+1400Joe Tryon+2000Jaelan Phillips+2000Gregory Rousseau+2000Kwity Paye+2000Caleb Farley+2000Azeez Ojulari+2000Jayson Oweh+2000Trevon Moehrig-Woodard+2500Greg Newsome+2500Eric Stokes+3300Asante Samuel Jr.+3300Jabril Cox+3300Ronnie Perkins+6000Nick Bolton+6000Kelvin Joseph+6000Jevon Holland+6000Baron Browning+6000Richie Grant+20000Christian Barmore+20000Alim McNeill+20000Jayson Oweh, LB, Ravens (+2000)Micah Parsons and Patrick Surtain have returned immediate dividends as top-12 picks and deserve to be among the favorites in this field. But you can make the case that Oweh should be the front-runner for this award, and it's criminal to price him as a 20-1 afterthought. The Ravens' uber-athletic pass-rusher was expected to develop slowly in his rookie year, but he's logged the most snaps of any edge rusher on the team and has made them count. Oweh is currently the NFL's third-highest-graded rookie defender, ranking in the top five in pressures (7), hits (2), hurries (4), and stops (5). He's also been the fifth-best run defender in the entire league and by far the best among the 2021 class.Oweh made his impact clear on a national stage when he forced and then recovered the game-clinching fumble in the waning moments of Baltimore's thrilling 36-35 win over the Chiefs on Sunday night. If the supposedly "raw" Oweh is already making plays like that in his first two games - coming off the bench, no less - how much havoc can he wreak over a 17-game slate? This is an honor that awards flashy stats - such as sacks and turnovers - and impact moments. Oweh is sure to have more of both than most on the board by season's end. His team is also more likely to make the postseason than any player priced shorter than 30-1, which is often an unspoken criterion for a DROY winner. Oweh is an absolute robbery at this price, but it won't last for long.Kwity Paye, DE, Colts (+2000)While Oweh has paced rookie edge rushers through the first two weeks, Paye was my preseason pick to win this award and was dealing from 10-1 to 12-1 just two weeks ago. At this price, he's a clear bargain. After leading all rookies in PFF grade during the preseason, the Colts defensive end has been the fifth-best rookie defender through two weeks thanks in part to his stout run defense. Paye's five tackles and three assisted tackles both rank first among rookie edge rushers, and he's been the most reliable player on Indy's young defense through two weeks. His pass-rushing chops haven't been on full display so far, but he has the skill set to harass opposing quarterbacks over the course of the season. He was a value at 12-1 and has exceeded expectations early; grab this price and run.Asante Samuel Jr., CB, Chargers (+3300)Samuel was among our favorite preseason values for this award, and he's already making an impact as a starter for the Chargers. The rookie corner made a statement in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys, recording four tackles, three pass breakups, and his first career interception. He also played 97% of Los Angeles' defensive snaps, so he'll clearly have plenty of opportunities to add to his interception total and potentially take one back to the house. Surtain has played like the best cornerback in this class, but it's hard to find a corner with more upside than Samuel, especially at these odds.Nick Bolton, LB, Chiefs (+6000)For years, this award was handed to the best rookie linebacker with the gaudiest tackle total. Pass-rushers have been in vogue in recent years, but this is still an outrageous price for Bolton, who leads all rookies in total tackles (16) and ranks in the top 10 in the NFL in solo tackles (12).The Chiefs' second-round pick recorded five of his eight stops - which lead all rookies and rank eighth overall - in Sunday's loss to the Ravens, where he was all over the field during his 63 snaps. Bolton isn't great in coverage and likely needs a few sacks to be a legitimate contender, but a high tackle rate and secure playing time for one of the league's best teams is a clear path to profitability for the 60-1 long shot.Jevon Holland, S, Dolphins (+6000)Your highest-graded rookie defender through two weeks is ... Jevon Holland? The Dolphins' second-rounder wasn't on many people's radar before the season, though he was among my favorite preseason bets after standing out for Miami in training camp. He's carried that into the regular season and is excelling as the Dolphins' last line of defense. Holland hasn't allowed a single target through two weeks while playing a whopping 74 snaps, including 56 as free safety. And despite spending much of his time as a single-high safety with zero receptions allowed, he's still managed five tackles, two quarterback hits, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in his first two games.Holland has been everywhere despite the heavy load on his shoulders in pass coverage, and his zero-target run is even more impressive considering that he's playing alongside two shutdown corners in Xavien Howard and Byron Jones. It's hard for a safety to win this award, but if anyone can, it's Holland.C Jackson Cowart is a sports betting writer at theScore. Buccaneers' Brown placed on COVID-19 list
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed wide receiver Antonio Brown on the COVID-19 list Wednesday, putting him in jeopardy of missing Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams, the team announced.Brown tested positive for the virus, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. As a vaccinated player, he will need two negative tests 24 hours apart to play in Week 3.In early September, Tampa Bay became the second NFL team with all of its players, coaches, and staff fully vaccinated.Brown racked up five catches for 121 yards and one touchdown during the reigning Super Bowl champion's season-opening win against the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday. The veteran caught just one pass in a Week 2 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. If Brown can't play in the heavyweight Week 3 NFC matchup, Scotty Miller will likely take on an expanded role behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Gronkowski insists he watches 'tons of film' after MNF comments
Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski made sure to emphasize his dedication to studying film Wednesday after telling Peyton and Eli Manning on Monday Night Football that he doesn't watch any."I actually watch tons of film. An overload of film. I will probably blame (Bucs PR director) Nelson (Luis) over there. He asked me eight times to go on the show. I told him, 'It's not a good idea.' They always get me in that type of silly atmosphere and that's what happened," Gronkowski said in a light-hearted manner, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine.Bruce Arians jokingly threatened to revoke Gronkowski's veteran days off after the head coach's news conference Wednesday. The 32-year-old tight end bantered with the Manning brothers on Monday's broadcast, telling them that he doesn't watch film and just runs by defenders when he's on the field. He also said that he leans on Tom Brady for scouting reports on the opposing team.
Jaguars' Meyer impressed by NFL competition: 'It's Alabama every week'
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer is apparently impressed by the level of competition he's faced.Cameras caught Meyer, who's had a rough start to his pro football coaching career, telling Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio before their Week 2 game just how hard it is to win in the NFL."A lot of good players in this league, man. It's Alabama every week," said Meyer.
Fields to start vs. Browns with Dalton out due to knee injury
The Chicago Bears will start rookie quarterback Justin Fields in Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns with Andy Dalton unable to play due to a knee injury, head coach Matt Nagy announced Wednesday.Nagy reiterated that Dalton, who is reportedly dealing with a bone bruise, will remain Chicago's starter when he's healthy, per Andrew Siciliano of NFL Network. Nick Foles will act as Fields' backup in Week 3.Dalton left Sunday's win over the Cincinnati Bengals in the first half after scrambling and landing awkwardly on Chicago's sideline. Fields entered the game and completed 6 of 13 passes for 60 yards and an interception while adding 31 yards on the ground. The No. 11 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft put together a strong preseason, leading to significant support for the Bears to start him over Dalton, who joined Chicago as a free agent this offseason prior to the team drafting Fields. However, the Bears remained committed to starting the veteran signal-caller, with Dalton pronouncing in August that "it's my time.""I do," said Nagy when asked if he feels bad for Dalton, according to Adam Hoge of NBCS Chicago. "There's a human element when you play sports and the relationships you build. … His situation, that's real. You feel for him."Fields starred for Ohio State in college, throwing for 5,373 yards and 63 touchdowns against nine interceptions in 22 games across two seasons. He also racked up 867 yards and 15 scores on the ground.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Week 3 round-robin moneyline parlay: Don't look back in anger
Greg Joseph. There, I said it. Now that it's out there we can all move on with our lives. The Vikings kicker missed a chip shot to win the game and make the Week 2 underdog round-robin moneyline parlay profitable. While we won them all in Week 1, at least we got our money's worth with a sweat-and-a-half in Week 2. The Panthers won easily, the Titans won the hard way, and the Colts flirted with victory as well. While we're trying to win the bets, finding value is the name of the game, even if the kicker can't do his job.How it worksWe parlay five underdogs together in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin, so we're going to use 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay. If three teams pull the upset, you'll likely double your money. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win? We go swimming in gold doubloons like a young Scrooge McDuck.Who to playLos Angeles Chargers +250"The Chiefs can't lose two games in a row."Despite the popularity of that narrative, it's not actually in the NFL rulebook, and the Chargers will in fact board their flight to Kansas City this weekend. The point spread is too high here, and therefore the moneyline at +250 or better is certainly worth a shot.In six head-to-head matchups in the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs are 4-1 (excluding a meaningless Week 17 loss that Chad Henne started). Every game has been close, though. Mahomes has surpassed 300 passing yards just once, and he needed overtime to do it. The Chargers play it close against the NFL's best young star, and they have one of their own to counter him. With this game being a focal point of Sunday's schedule, casual NFL fans will get an eyeful of Justin Herbert. The throws will astound you, just like the Mahomes jaw-droppers we see weekly. The question is whether the Chargers as a whole can stay out of their own way. (Going one week without a baffling call being made against them would help as well.)New Orleans Saints +130This is strictly a numbers play. This game was a pick'em, lined at -110 on either side, but last week's results pushed the Patriots to field-goal favorites. For me, we're buying something that should be -110 for +130, and we'll hope a healthier Saints squad (on and off the field) will have a few more answers than the Jets' defense did for a pretty basic Pats offense.Miami Dolphins +160Jacoby Brissett is set to start for the Dolphins and I actually prefer him at the helm with a full week of practice reps. Nothing in my numbers suggests the Raiders should be over a field-goal favorite, despite a strong start to the season. Derek Carr had 336 yards through the air in last year's matchup and Las Vegas still didn't win the game - and he might be limited due to injury.Atlanta Falcons +140This isn't a comfortable bet a week after a back-breaking non-cover for Atlanta - but who decided the Giants should be favorites against anyone? I give New York a home-field downgrade, as its best results with Daniel Jones have come on the road. While the Falcons as favorites are a hard pass, we'll try them as 'dogs here.Green Bay Packers +165Green Bay is live to win this one against an always banged-up 49ers team with no discernible home-field advantage. While the Packers' win over the Lions doesn't convince me they're "back," we're still getting a +165 price because San Francisco would normally gash Green Bay's run defense. But who's going to do the running? Last year's matchup involved a similar MASH unit and the Niners couldn't move the ball, on the ground or otherwise. Here's how the odds shake down this week:PARLAYODDS (Approx.)ATL+MIA+LAC+1900ATL+MIA+NO+1250ATL+MIA+GB+1400ATL+LAC+NO+1730ATL+LAC+GB+2000ATL+NO+GB+1300MIA+LAC+NO+1850MIA+LAC+GB+2100MIA+NO+GB+1400LAC+NO+GB+1900ATL+MIA+LAC+NO+GB+12000Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Roethlisberger: I'm going to do 'everything I can' to play Week 3
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is determined to play Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals despite being a surprise addition to the injury report Tuesday due to a left pectoral issue."(I'm) going to do everything I can," Roethlisberger said Wednesday about his availability to play in Week 3, according to Gerry Dulac of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette."I don't know how it happened, I just know it happened early in the game," he continued, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor. The 39-year-old was hit 10 times and sacked twice during Pittsburgh's Week 2 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. He said the ailment affected him during the contest, and added it hurts "when I reach for something outside the framework of my body or, you know, trying to push off, get off the ground."Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin didn't sound concerned about Roethlisberger heading into Week 3, saying Tuesday the injury could affect the seven-time Pro Bowler "from a preparation standpoint."Roethlisberger has completed 62.5% of his pass attempts for 483 yards and two touchdowns against one interception through two games this season.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: NFL has no immediate plans to change taunting rule enforcement
The NFL has no immediate plans to instruct its competition committee to modify the enforcement of the taunting rule, sources told Mark Maske of the Washington Post. The league informed teams over the offseason it would start to crack down on post-play demonstrations, and the NFL believes rule enforcement has gone as expected over the first two weeks despite the criticism. It also thinks players will eventually adjust.NFL officials called eight unsportsmanlike penalties in Week 2, tying the highest single-week total since 2000. As a result, fans and the NFL Players Association heavily criticized the league."For those who aren't a fan of the new taunting rule, we aren't either," the NFLPA tweeted Monday. "Rules like this are adopted through the competition committee, which includes 11 members: 10 selected by the commissioner and one NFLPA rep."However, multiple head coaches and team officials are in favor of the crackdown."The idea behind the taunting rule is to prevent the bigger things, OK?" Washington Football Team head coach Ron Rivera, a member of the competition committee, recently said.Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll respects the NFL's intention behind the taunting rule, but he said it's hard to manage."I think we've opened up a bit of a can of worms. And so we're going to have to find our way through it here as we go," Carroll recently said.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Week 3 O/U best bets: Fade Jets, Texans and their rookie QBs
We finished Week 1 with a 2-1 record on our NFL total plays after the Packers' high-scoring affair on Monday night, bringing us to 5-3 over the first two weeks. This week is a bit less clear-cut with so many injuries across the league, but there are still a few numbers we're targeting for Week 3:Panthers (-7.5, 43) @ Texans
Tagovailoa out vs. Raiders with fractured ribs, Brissett to start
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will miss Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders after further tests revealed he has fractured ribs, head coach Brian Flores announced Wednesday, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Jacoby Brissett will start the Week 3 matchup. The Dolphins initially said Tagovailoa - who exited last Sunday's 35-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills - was day-to-day after X-rays came back negative. At the time, Flores was optimistic the signal-caller could play against the Raiders. However, the coach said the team is being cautious with Tagovailoa, who pushed to play, after discovering the severity of his injury, according to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe. Flores added that the sophomore will be evaluated on a "week-to-week" basis moving forward.Brissett replaced Tagovailoa in the Week 2 matchup. He finished the game completing 24 of 40 passes for 169 yards and an interception.Tagovailoa was 1-for-4 for 13 yards in his two drives against Buffalo. The former first-rounder threw for 202 yards and one touchdown against one interception in Miami's season-opening win over the New England Patriots.Brissett is one of the NFL's most experienced backup quarterbacks. The 28-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins this offseason after making 30 starts over four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 3 line moves: How much is your QB worth?
It wasn't quite a bloodbath for NFL quarterbacks on Sunday, but more like a soft tissue injury shower. As a result, there's a theme to this week's look at how point spreads have shifted: how much is your starting quarterback worth?Panthers @ Texans (-8, 43)The lookahead line for Thursday night had the Panthers favored by three points on the road in Houston. Carolina's 2-0 start attributed to this line move, but the big bump comes from Tyrod Taylor's hamstring injury forcing him to the injured reserve. Now rookie third-round pick Davis Mills gets his first career start on a short week.Is Taylor worth five points? The reopen at -7.5 and subsequent move to -8 indicates the market is looking at the Texans - with Mills at the helm - the same way it did prior to Week 1 before they soundly beat Jacksonville and their respectable showing in Cleveland. Meanwhile, the Panthers are being evaluated at their high point. I'll be looking to see if this can hit +10, which would warrant a bet on the Texans.Colts @ Titans (-5, 48)It looked really bad for Carson Wentz as he was bent backward by Aaron Donald. You can't pick a worse guy to be grabbing ahold of you, so Wentz should consider himself fortunate if he got away with just two sprained ankles. This line was at -3.5 last week but has nestled in no man's land at -5 while we wait to see if Wentz can play. We'll likely see this rise higher if Jacob Eason gets the start. If it doesn't move, the Titans would be the play.Dolphins @ Raiders (-3.5, 45)Unlike the Texans with Mills and the Colts with Eason, the Dolphins have a veteran option at quarterback. As a result, I'll likely be on Miami, no matter who plays under center. The lookahead line for this game had this matchup as a pick'em. Excitement is building in Vegas after the Raiders' 2-0 start, and sure enough, the line reached as high as -5 early this week. We've seen this line dip back to -3.5 after reports of Tua Tagovailoa's ribs being bruised instead of broken. With a full week of Jacoby Brissett getting starter's reps in practice, getting over a field goal with the Dolphins would be a bet worth making. We're still not at a point where the downgrade to a replacement-level QB should be more than a field goal.Bears @ Browns (-7, 46.5)Andy Dalton's injury opened the door for Justin Fields, and while he didn't exactly fly through it like Cosmo Kramer, the interesting element is how little this line has moved. The Browns were lined as 9.5-point favorites for this matchup in the summer, and now it's actually down to -7. Despite Fields' rough showing against the Bengals, perhaps the market thinks his dual-threat ability gives the Bears a better chance to hang with the Browns in the Dawg Pound.Buccaneers @ Rams (+1.5, 55.5)The Buccaneers are on the move. The champs were deemed slight underdogs in this game during the summer and still weren't considered the favorite last week. However, this line has jumped the fence from being a PK to the Bucs now acting as the favorite. Will it get to -3? The Rams have to garner some attention if it does, especially after a decisive win last season in Tampa.Saints @ Patriots (-3, 42)What a ride it's been for the Saints. They've gone from no one believing they could beat the Packers, to dismantling the cheeseheads, to getting handled by the Panthers. It's rare to see a team go from home underdog - where they were before the opening game's move to Jacksonville - to road favorite, and then back to underdog; especially considering this game was a PK as recently as last week. The Patriots' defensive domination of the Jets, combined with the Saints' injuries and coaching COVID-19 issues, has New England as a full three-point favorite. This feels like an overreaction, though, and one that could see the Saints get attention later in the week, depending on how the injury report looks.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Rodgers growing hair out for Halloween costume
Aaron Rodgers revealed the reason behind the longer hair he's been rocking this season.During an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers quarterback explained he's been growing out his hair for the last year for a Halloween costume."I have a month-ish until Halloween, and this has been a year in the making for my costume," Rodgers said. "I'm not gonna give it away, but it's somebody who is a hero of mine who has, you know, longish hair."While Rodgers wouldn't provide any further details about the costume, Twitter had some thoughts on what it could be.
NFL Power Rankings - Week 3: Best new face for all 32 teams
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors. This week, we identify the best new face on each NFL franchise two games into the season.1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-0) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 1There aren't a lot of new faces on a team that brought back all of its starters, but first-round pick Joe Tryon-Shoyinka has fortified the Bucs' edge rotation. While he hasn't registered a sack yet, Tryon-Shoyinka has notched a couple of pressures on 20 pass-rush snaps.2. Los Angeles Rams (2-0)Previous Rank: 3Matthew Stafford has been everything Sean McVay dreamed of in a quarterback. The 33-year-old is among the early MVP favorites.3. Kansas City Chiefs (1-1)Previous Rank: 2The high-profile additions along the Kansas City Chiefs' offensive line are already making an impact. Trading for left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. looks like a wise decision to protect Patrick Mahomes' blindside.4. Cleveland Browns (1-1)Previous Rank: 7The Browns added a handful of big names to their defense (Jadeveon Clowney, John Johnson III, and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah). But defensive tackle Malik Jackson is making the biggest difference thus far with six tackles, five hurries, and six pressures over two games.5. Arizona Cardinals (2-0) Norm Hall / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 6Second-round pick Rondale Moore has added a dimension to the Cardinals' high-octane offense. The deep threat leads all rookie receivers with 182 yards, and he's scored a touchdown.6. Buffalo Bills (1-1)Previous Rank: 9First-round pick Gregory Rousseau has registered two sacks, seven tackles, and two QB hits to start off his career.7. San Francisco 49ers (2-0)Previous Rank: 12With Raheem Mostert out for the campaign, the Niners turned to sixth-round pick Elijah Mitchell, who has totaled 157 yards and a score over two games.8. Baltimore Ravens (1-1)Previous Rank: 15Injuries have decimated the Ravens' backfield, so Latavius Murray's production has been a welcomed sight in Baltimore. The veteran jumped right into action with two touchdowns after being signed three days before the season.9. Las Vegas Raiders (2-0)Previous Rank: 14The Raiders are finally fielding some semblance of a defense, and free-agent signee Yannick Ngakoue has been the catalyst. He hasn't tallied a sack, but the Pro Bowler has piled up eight hurries and is freeing space for Maxx Crosby, Solomon Thomas, and Carl Nassib.10. Green Bay Packers (1-1) Quinn Harris / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 11There are few new contributors on a team filled with veterans. Quietly, the Packers signed linebacker De'Vondre Campbell to a $2-million deal during the summer, and he leads the club with 19 tackles and an interception.11. Tennessee Titans (1-1)Previous Rank: 22Julio Jones evidently responds well to criticism. After being chewed out following a forgettable Titans debut, Julio went off for 128 yards on six grabs in Week 2, showing Tennessee exactly what it traded for this past offseason.12. Seattle Seahawks (1-1)Previous Rank: 4The Seahawks are starting fast again while ranking among the top 10 in scoring. Seattle might experience more January success than in prior campaigns if new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron can keep the offense humming all season.13. Denver Broncos (2-0)Previous Rank: 16Teddy Bridgewater has brought stability to the most important position while ending the Broncos' trend of slow starts to begin a season. The veteran who was acquired through a trade has logged four touchdowns without a turnover.14. Dallas Cowboys (1-1)Previous Rank: 17First-round pick Micah Parsons has been instrumental to the Cowboys' early returns on defense. The rookie even shifted to defensive end during his second pro game and held his own, recording a sack in a win over the Chargers.15. Los Angeles Chargers (1-1) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 10Rookie left tackle and 13th overall selection Rashawn Slater has accumulated the second-most pass-blocking snaps without allowing a sack this season. He also hasn't committed a penalty.16. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1)Previous Rank: 8Rookie running back Najee Harris has started strong, but late-offseason signee Melvin Ingram has been an important addition, especially with an injury sidelining T.J. Watt. Ingram has produced a sack, five tackles, and four QB hits over two games.17. Carolina Panthers (2-0)Previous Rank: 23The Panthers are one of just seven teams still undefeated. Under Sam Darnold's leadership, they could be the league's first 3-0 club after meeting the Houston Texans on Thursday.18. New Orleans Saints (1-1)Previous Rank: 5Rookie third-round pick Paulson Adebo started strong, allowing one catch on four targets and snatching a rare interception off Aaron Rodgers in Week 1. But he was burned for 90 yards and a touchdown in Week 2 without the support of Marshon Lattimore, who was absent with an injury.19. New England Patriots (1-1)Previous Rank: 19Bill Belichick spent $232 million in free agency, yet rookie quarterback Mac Jones is making the biggest impact while showing trademark poise and efficiency through two games.20. Washington Football Team (1-1) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 18Ryan Fitzpatrick and Curtis Samuel have yet to make a dent due to injuries. But fellow free-agent addition William Jackson III has been worth the money, with an interception, four passes defensed, and seven tackles to his name.21. Miami Dolphins (1-1)Previous Rank: 13Jaylen Waddle has lived up to his first-round billing while recording 109 yards and a touchdown.22. Indianapolis Colts (0-2)Previous Rank: 20Carson Wentz has been solid when healthy, though his performances haven't yet translated into wins. Unfortunately, he can't shake the injury bug and is dealing with two sprained ankles.23. Philadelphia Eagles (1-1)Previous Rank: 21DeVonta Smith, the 2020 Heisman winner, has caught about half of his targets. But he's shown flashes and has hauled in a touchdown pass two weeks into his career.24. Chicago Bears (1-1)Previous Rank: 25The hype around Justin Fields is growing after he appeared in spurts over Chicago's first two games. Bears fans will likely get an extended look at him as Andy Dalton deals with a leg injury.25. Minnesota Vikings (0-2) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 26The Vikings may have pounced on a steal when they signed Nick Vigil to a $1.75-million pact. The linebacker has already given his new team 18 tackles and a pick-6.26. Cincinnati Bengals (1-1)Previous Rank: 24Any concerns about Ja'Marr Chase's NFL transition have dissipated. The fifth overall pick hasn't struggled to catch the ball during the regular season while reeling in seven grabs for 155 yards and two touchdowns.27. Houston Texans (1-1)Previous Rank: 27Tyrod Taylor laughed off the 0-17 projections and led the underdog Texans to a Week 1 win. He was 10-for-11 passing with a rushing score against the Browns in Week 2 before leaving with a hamstring injury.28. New York Giants (0-2)Previous Rank: 28Azeez Ojulari is already making a difference. The second-round linebacker selected this past offseason leads the Giants' defense with two sacks.29. Detroit Lions (0-2)Previous Rank: 29It's been a rough start for the Lions, but their rushing offense is showing signs of life. Jamaal Williams has been an effective complement to D'Andre Swift while averaging nearly five yards per carry and adding a score.30. Atlanta Falcons (0-2) Kevin C. Cox / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 31The Falcons' offense has been listless to begin the season, but free-agent addition Cordarrelle Patterson found the end zone twice Sunday.31. New York Jets (0-2)Previous Rank: 30Big-ticket signee Corey Davis scored two touchdowns in his Jets debut, though he was held in check during Zach Wilson's nightmare Week 2 performance.32. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-2)Previous Rank: 32Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence has formed an early connection with free-agent addition Marvin Jones. The wideout has logged 132 yards and two touchdowns on 20 targets through two games.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Broncos' Chubb to undergo arthroscopic ankle surgery
Denver Broncos edge rusher Bradley Chubb will undergo arthroscopic surgery Wednesday to remove a bone spur in his left ankle, the team announced. The Broncos won't have a timetable for Chubb's return until after the procedure. However, the club is hopeful the defender will return this season, a source told The Denver Post's Ryan O'Halloran.Chubb underwent offseason surgery on his right ankle. He was expected to be ready for Week 1, but a problem with his other ankle after the preseason finale forced him to sit out the opener. He returned for the following contest but missed the second half after aggravating the bothersome ankle."I really couldn't go out there and do everything I wanted to do," Chubb said. "That's going to eat at me the most, knowing I couldn't help my team the way I wanted to help my team. But I know these guys are going to do everything they can to make that playoff push, and I'm going to be right there with them."Chubb, who's in his fourth season, had 7.5 sacks last season in his return from a torn ACL. He had 12 sacks as a rookie in 2018, teaming up with Von Miller to give the Broncos a vaunted edge presence. The two have hardly played together since then due to injuries to both stars."Just going through the ACL a couple years ago and then the offseason surgery on my other ankle, it gets frustrating because I feel like I'm doing everything I can," Chubb said. "I feel like I'm doing everything I can. But one thing my mom and dad told me is just (to) keep that faith in God, keep trusting in God, because he doesn't make mistakes. He does all this stuff for a reason. The reason might not be known now, but it's way bigger than I'll ever imagine."The Broncos are one of seven teams in the NFL that are off to a 2-0 start in 2021.Copyright © 2021 Score Media Ventures Inc.
