Bears hire Bills' Washington as DC
The Chicago Bears hired Buffalo Bills assistant head coach and defensive line coach Eric Washington as their defensive coordinator, the team announced Saturday.Bears head coach Matt Eberflus will continue to call plays on defense, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero."We are excited to announce that Eric Washington will be joining our team as the defensive coordinator," Eberflus said in a statement."He is a great communicator with elite leadership skills, and he will enhance our current defensive staff. His track record speaks for itself with coordinator experience as well as expertise in the area of defensive line."The Bills hired Washington in 2020 as the defensive line coach, and he was awarded the assistant head coach title in 2023 after being a senior defensive assistant in 2022.This will be Washington's second stint in Chicago, as he was brought in as a defensive assistant in 2008. He ultimately became the defensive line coach in 2010 before taking a job with the Carolina Panthers in the same role in 2011.The 54-year-old Washington will look to help continue the club's defensive success it saw down the stretch of the 2023 season. The Bears ranked third in EPA/play allowed on defense from Weeks 12-18, according to Ben Baldwin's database. They didn't allow a team to score more than 21 points in their final six games of the year.Chicago has some key defensive players set to hit free agency, including star cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who was PFF's highest-graded defensive back in 2023. Johnson said he wants to become the NFL's highest-paid cornerback this offseason.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Patriots expected to promote DL coach Covington to DC
The New England Patriots are expected to promote defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator, sources told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.Covington has been with the Patriots for the last seven seasons. He was hired as an assistant in 2017 and promoted to outside linebackers coach two years later. He was named the defensive line coach in 2020, a position he's held for the last four seasons.New head coach Jerod Mayo and Covington have worked closely together since Mayo was hired in 2019. The 37-year-old Mayo was the team's inside linebackers coach from 2019-23 before being named head coach earlier in January.New England's defense was a bright spot amid a disappointing 2023 campaign. The Patriots finished sixth in yards and 14th in points allowed per game. It was one of the best units in the NFL down the stretch, as they ranked first in EPA/play allowed from Weeks 10-18, according to Ben Baldwin's database.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Packers' Jones excited for team's future: 'We're gonna be special'
Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones believes his team is heading in the right direction."You can feel it. You can see it. The chemistry, the bond, the standard that we've set," Jones said in an interview for the club's website. "I feel like with the standard we've set, we know what our expectations are when we come back next year. Our standard is high."He added: "I feel like we're gonna be dangerous. We're gonna be special."Green Bay exceeded expectations this season by winning a playoff game and coming within reach of the NFC Championship. The Packers were the youngest team to make the playoffs since the NFL expanded to a 16-game schedule in 1978, according to StatMuse. After a 3-6 start to the season, the Packers rallied to win six of their last eight games and secure the final wild-card spot in the conference. Quarterback Jordan Love elevated his play to new heights, throwing for 2,150 yards with 18 touchdowns and only one interception during that stretch. He ranked second in the NFL among all quarterbacks in EPA per play from Weeks 11-18, according to Ben Baldwin's database. The Packers are set to carry over their late-season success into 2024. Most of the team's starters on both sides of the ball will return, including Jones, who is under contract for the next year. The 29-year-old had arguably the best stretch of his career late in the season, totaling over 100 rushing yards in the club's final five games, including 108 yards in the divisional round."I guess I'm aging like wine," Jones said. "I'm only getting better with time. I feel like I'm just stepping into my prime."Green Bay has five top-100 picks in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Browns' Flacco backs Hamlin for Comeback POY
Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco said Buffalo Bills defensve back Damar Hamlin should be awarded Comeback Player of the Year."Most of the guys on that list, I'm not sure what we're coming back from. ... I'm just coming back from what? Being old and not being on a team for a couple months?" Flacco said Friday on the "Zach Gelb Show."Flacco and Hamlin were both named finalists for the award alongside Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, and Tua Tagovailoa.Although Flacco doesn't believe he's worthy of winning the award, he did share his appreciation for being named a finalist."Anytime you're getting recognized in this league for playing well, it's flattering. It's a cool group to be a part of, that's for sure," he said.Hamlin was active for seven games this past season, including two playoff contests. In 2022, he was revived on the field after going into cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Pitt product was hospitalized for nine days after the incident.Flacco provided a spark to the Browns late in the season after signing with the club in December. He passed for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, sporting a 90.2 passer rating in five games. Cleveland clinched a playoff spot behind the veteran passer's spirited production in his 16th season.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Watson encourages Higgins to join Browns
Quarterback Deshaun Watson called for Cincinnati Bengals receiver and pending free agent Tee Higgins to join the Cleveland Browns next season."We wanna pass the ball. ... We're gonna take good care of you," Watson said on his "QB Unplugged" podcast. "The Cleveland fans are gonna love you to death. We got the Clemson ties. We ain't get to play with each other, but this is our opportunity."Watson and Higgins both attended Clemson, but the former entered the NFL when the latter embarked on his freshman campaign in 2017. The Browns QB also reminded Higgins that they both share the same agent, David Mulugheta.Higgins has averaged 64 receptions, 921 yards, and six touchdowns over four seasons with the Bengals. He recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns in 2021 and 2022. The 25-year-old posted 656 yards on 42 receptions for five touchdowns in 11 games last season but endured multiple injuries.Watson threw for 1,115 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions in his second year with the Browns before being placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a shoulder ailment.Cleveland appears interested in adding to a receiving corps headlined by Amari Cooper and tight end David Njoku. The Browns acquired Elijah Moore last offseason in a trade with the New York Jets.Higgins is among several wideouts who could be available at the start of the new league year on March 13. Mike Evans, Calvin Ridley, and Michael Pittman are among the other notable names poised to hit free agency.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Kelce: I want a title 'more than I ever wanted one in my life'
Despite sporting a pair of Super Bowl rings, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce isn't using past success as motivation ahead of Sunday's AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens."I ain't thinking about a single one I already accomplished," Kelce said Friday. "I'm thinking about this one on Sunday. I want it more than I ever wanted one in my life."The Chiefs are just one win away from securing their fourth trip to the Super Bowl over the last five years. Kelce, alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid, has been integral in Kansas City's prolific run.The 34-year-old said he's gained additional motivation to remain on top of his game after hearing remarks about a drop-off in play."It's a challenge to find new ways to have success. And I think that this is what this year has brought for me," he said. "Figuring out how I can get the best out of myself. Figure out how I can get the best out of my teammates. All at the same time, being a great leader. Bringing that energy. Showing for the young guys that determined mindset you got to have week in and week out. And you know what? I love that challenge."With 145 overall postseason catches, Kelce is just seven away from breaking Hall of Famer Jerry Rice's all-time record. He also sits second behind Rice with 1,694 postseason receiving yards and 18 touchdowns."It's been a hell of a ride up to this point, baby. I don't feel like getting off the roller coaster any time soon," Kelce said.He added that while playoff experience is "vital," it's also a "luxury" that players can't completely depend upon when entering critical matchups."We're resilient. We grew together. You saw the struggles. You saw the growth. I think that's what makes us special," Kelce said. "You just come into that locker room, you'll see the chemistry. You'll see how much we want it for the guy next to us. That's when you know you got a real good team."Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Deebo cleared for NFC championship vs. Lions
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel was a full participant at practice Friday and is cleared to face the Detroit Lions in Sunday's NFC title game, coach Kyle Shanahan announced."It's huge," Shanahan said of Samuel's return on Friday. "We were scared at the beginning of the week but ... full go today, no restrictions on him, that's definitely a good thing for us."Samuel battled a shoulder injury this week and didn't practice Wednesday. He was a limited participant during Thursday's session. The 49ers are trying to go back to the Super Bowl after falling short in the NFC title game in each of the past two seasons. Samuel, a former All-Pro receiver, was one of four San Francisco players who finished the 2023 regular season with 1,000-plus scrimmage yards.Samuel caught 60 passes for 892 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games in 2023. He also rushed for 225 yards and five TDs. The 28-year-old had two receptions and 24 yards before exiting last week's win over the Green Bay Packers due to his shoulder injury.Samuel said Friday that he originally thought he had fractured his shoulder but it ended up being a "deep bruise," according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic."I ain't protecting nothing," Samuel added. He also missed two games earlier this season due to a shoulder injury.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL betting insights: Feisty Lions getting backed to upset 49ers
Everyone loves an underdog, and bettors are no different. The Lions are getting plenty of support in the betting market to upset the 49ers in Sunday's NFC Championship Game, according to data from theScore Bet.As of midday Friday, 74% of the moneyline handle (money wagered) is on Detroit, who are +270 (bet $100, win $270) underdogs. And 75% of the spread handle is backing the Lions, who are now +7.Let's dive deeper into the betting splits for both conference championship contests.Lions @ 49ers (-7, -340 ML)SplitLions49ersML Bets66%34%ML Handle74%26%Spread Bets75%25%Spread Handle75%25%The spread for the NFC Championship Game has bounced between 49ers -6.5 to -7.5 at several different prices since opening at -7. It's impossible to know the odds and spread the majority of the Lions liability came in on, but sharp bettors who looked to make a bet on Jared Goff and Co. likely did so when the line moved to +7.5 to ensure a converted-touchdown loss for Detroit would still cash their bet.Conversely, sharp bettors who wanted to back the 49ers likely did anytime the line moved to -6.5.The result is a -7 line that'll probably stick until kickoff. Sportsbooks will adjust the odds on the -7 accordingly over the next couple of days but don't expect this spread to move off a key number unless there's significant injury news.Chiefs @ Ravens (-4, -210 ML)SplitChiefsRavensML Bets62%38%ML Handle54%46%Spread Bets53%47%Spread Handle47%53%The betting splits in the Chiefs-Ravens game are much more balanced in a matchup that should, based on the odds, be closer on the field. The Ravens opened at -3, but that key number was quickly bet off to -3.5 and moved even further to -4.The percentages above would indicate that a move this significant isn't warranted. However, somewhere in the betting market, a group of respected bettors has moved this line into a position where Patrick Mahomes is getting four points in a playoff game. That may seem like a big number to the casual fan, especially after recently watching the Chiefs quarterback beat the Bills as a three-point underdog in Buffalo.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lions' Goff: 'Pretty cool' to hear name chanted at Red Wings game
Detroit has been showing its love to Jared Goff ahead of the Lions' NFC championship matchup against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, and the feeling is mutual.Goff heaped praise upon the city Friday when asked about hearing his name chanted during the Detroit Red Wings' 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers the night before."It was pretty cool," the quarterback said, according to Jared Ramsey of the Detroit Free Press. "(It's) pretty fun to be a part of a city that cares so much."
Ravens' Andrews to return for AFC title game
Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews will return for Sunday's AFC Championship Game clash with the Kansas City Chiefs after being activated from injured reserve, head coach John Harbaugh announced Friday, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley.Andrews missed the final six regular-season games and Baltimore's divisional-round win over the Houston Texans with an ankle injury. The three-time Pro Bowler produced 45 catches for 544 yards and six touchdowns before getting hurt.Andrews has often been quarterback Lamar Jackson's go-to target, especially in third-down and red-zone situations. The tight end was named a first-team All-Pro in 2021 after racking up 107 catches for 1,361 yards and nine scores. The return of Andrews gives Jackson a near-full complement of weapons for his battle against Patrick Mahomes and Co., including receivers Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and Odell Beckham Jr., as well as tight end Isaiah Likely.Likely has impressed in relief duty for Andrews, earning 356 yards and six touchdowns over the last seven contests.Harbaugh also said he's "confident" Marlon Humphrey will suit up against the Chiefs but added that he doesn't know for certain if the cornerback can play. Humphrey, who was listed as questionable, missed the win over the Texans with a calf injury.Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin (knee) and wide receiver Tylan Wallace (knee) were also given the questionable designation, while linebacker Del'Shawn Phillips (shoulder) is doubtful.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Chiefs' Pacheco questionable for AFC title game
The Kansas City Chiefs ruled running back Isiah Pacheco as questionable for Sunday's AFC title game against the Baltimore Ravens due to ankle and toe injuries.Pacheco didn't practice Wednesday and Thursday but was a limited participant during Friday's session. The second-year tailback led Kansas City with 935 yards (4.6 per carry) and seven touchdowns on the ground during the regular season. He's also made a big impact this postseason, topping 85 rushing yards and scoring a touchdown in each of his team's victories over the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills. If Pacheco isn't available versus Baltimore, Clyde Edwards-Helaire would likely carry the load at running back for Kansas City. The Chiefs have also listed linebacker Willie Gay and wide receiver Kadarius Toney as questionable for the Ravens matchup. AFC championship betting: Is it crazy to fade Mahomes getting points?
If you've been following our content since the preseason, there's a good chance you're holding a Ravens ticket to win the AFC.Having a +900 ticket bet on something now priced (-170) to happen 63% of the time is a good position for Sunday. The Ravens are significant favorites over the Chiefs in the conference title game by earning home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. If you are still a believer in the Ravens, your job is done. But if you're feeling frisky, you can take the points with Kansas City +3.5 and try to win both. Or, if you love the Chiefs at +3.5 (or potentially +4) and believe they're live to win, you can also take your equity (the payout) on Baltimore and put it all on Kansas City to create a potential windfall. You have options:OPTION BAL WINS KC WINSDo nothing9 units-1 unit2.2 unit bet on KC +3.56.8 units+1 unit9 unit bet on KC +3.5Even+8 unitsIf you missed the Ravens at +900 to win the AFC, we still have you covered. Let's dive into handicapping what should be a memorable clash.Chiefs @ Ravens (-3.5, 44.5)TEAMRATINGPROJECTED LINEChiefs70Ravens77-4We've projected this line closer to Ravens -4, and the betting market (for now) has decided that -3.5 is a better number than -3. This may come as a mild surprise, given the excitement surrounding the rare instances when Patrick Mahomes is an underdog, especially at more than a field goal, which could creep higher. Why does the market like the Ravens? Let us count the ways.At halftime in Buffalo, Tony Romo openly worried about the Chiefs' run defense as they were getting consistently pushed around by the Bills. KC's star defensive lineman, Chris Jones, lamented, "Gotta stop this run," mere seconds after the Chiefs beat the Bills. While Josh Allen provides power-running danger, Lamar Jackson's explosiveness is a threat every snap. Only two teams gave up more rushing yards to opposing quarterbacks than KC this season, and neither Allen, Trevor Lawrence, Russell Wilson, Jalen Hurts, nor Justin Fields are as deadly as Jackson, nor do they open so many holes for tailbacks. The Chiefs' defensive tactics may be less effective against an opponent capable of scrambling for 107 yards on 16 carries, as Jackson did against the Chiefs in 2021, or one able to produce 11 rushes for 100, as he did last Saturday. The Chiefs' defense may be without three starters (Willie Gay, Mike Edwards, and Derrick Nnadi) and is a group that played 77 snaps in Buffalo. Meanwhile, the Ravens are getting healthier with the return of Mark Andrews (and potentially Marlon Humphrey on defense) with an extra day of rest.We backed the Chiefs last week partly because questions surrounding their offense could be answered with simple ball security. Marquez Valdes-Scantling made uncharacteristic contested catches, while play calls for Mecole Hardman resulted in characteristic disasters. Neither can be relied upon against the Ravens' defense, which is much better than the battered Bills unit that had to play third-string linebacker A.J. Klein. With Buffalo vulnerable at the second level, Travis Kelce turned back the clock and Isiah Pacheco kicked aside tackles for extra yards. Roquan Smith and Patrick Queen won't be so malleable, especially if the Chiefs are missing Pro Bowl guard Joe Thuney, as expected. The Texans, a top-three offense by yards per play, looked efficient under C.J. Stroud until they went to Baltimore last week and didn't have a snap in the red zone, scoring three points total. The Chiefs' back-to-basics approach worked against the Bills - whose decision-making let KC off the hook. Andy Reid will look across the field Sunday and see a top head coach, John Harbaugh, making decisions to maximize his team's chances of winning. The Ravens trailed in the fourth quarter in just two games all season for a total of 3 minutes and 42 seconds. Mahomes' magic might continue, but faith in Baltimore to get a lead and hold it is warranted.Pick: Ravens (-3.5)An extensive list of prop bets for the AFC championship can be found here.Matt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. AFC championship: The 10 best prop bets for Chiefs-Ravens

Kansas City is sixth in first-half scoring but 27th in the second half. The Chiefs will need to jump on the Ravens' defense with Andy Reid's game plan before Baltimore can make adjustments.Assuming the favored Ravens have a second-half lead, we should see them manufacture long drives with their punishing ground game. Baltimore had two consecutive seven-minute possessions once Lamar Jackson had tired the Texans' defense.Player propsPatrick Mahomes: Under 1.5 passing touchdowns (-115)The Chiefs scored touchdowns on only 52.1% of their trips inside the 20 (19th in the NFL) this season. Meanwhile, the Ravens' defense isn't likely to surrender long-distance scores.Starting in late November, Kansas City found success converting from inside the 5-yard line with Isiah Pacheco. That strategy resulted in Mahomes throwing for fewer than two touchdowns in four of his last five regular-season games. Mecole Hardman's fumbled jet sweep at the goal line last week should serve as a warning for the Chiefs to keep it simple.Justin Watson: Over 13.5 receiving yardsKansas City ran well, Travis Kelce got open enough, Marquez Valdes-Scantling made two catches, and the Chiefs punted just once in Buffalo. The Ravens are plotting to stop Pacheco, be physical with Kelce, and have eyes on Rashee Rice, so Justin Watson should see at least two targets. He reached that mark in eight of the previous nine games Mahomes played in. One catch might be enough to clear a total as low as we've seen all season for Watson.Mark Andrews: Over 35.5 receiving yardsWe'll never get a yardage total this low for Mark Andrews again, so we might as well bet that he's back. We're relying on Andrews' chemistry with Jackson even if he plays fewer snaps than he's accustomed to.Lamar Jackson: Under 28.5 pass attemptsIdeally, Jackson will be more efficient rather than a high-volume passer. His attempts have been lined this high because it's assumed Baltimore will be in a close, back-and-forth game. However, we might not get that, and Jackson's more likely to take off and run in the playoffs rather than throw it away.Gus Edwards: Over 41.5 rushing yardsGus Edwards got to 40 yards against the Texans but got banged up on his first carry of Baltimore's penultimate drive. Justice Hill and Dalvin Cook ran for 52 combined yards as Edwards watched from the sideline. However, don't be alarmed by snap counts or carries. Edwards is the Ravens' top option to get the late workload with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.Anytime touchdownsJustin Watson (+600)

NFC championship betting: Differing styles create high-scoring potential
Backing the Packers in the divisional round was based on a concern that the 49ers might be overvalued and that, after three weeks without meaningful competition, San Francisco's offense might have a tough time finding a rhythm.Meanwhile, expecting the Lions to cover as favorites over the Buccaneers was predicated on a handful of things that changed for Tampa, mainly going from a home win over the Eagles to a trip to Motor City. The 49ers were off-kilter against Green Bay, and the Lions took advantage of Tampa's low ceiling. That combination of results - plus a concerning injury for San Francisco - might create a different point spread than expected and a level of uncertainty not found in the AFC Championship Game.Lions @ 49ers (-7.5, 51.5)TEAMRATINGPROJECTED LINELions6049ers84-8The flip-flopping between -6.5 and -7 didn't last long, as the point spread has found its way to a flat 49ers -7. Perhaps that's with the hope that Deebo Samuel's shoulder injury isn't enough to keep him out.San Francisco didn't look like a team that should be rated as historically great last week and certainly not to the level to push this week's line through a key number, even if this line might have closed higher during the latter portion of the regular season.Anyone trying to tell you that Samuel's potential absence doesn't change how effective the 49ers' offense can be is kidding themselves. After all, the 49ers went 0-4 against the spread, winning outright just once, without Samuel this season. However, over the last two seasons, here's their offensive output in games Samuel has missed:GAMEYPPPOINTSLAR - Week 8 (2022)7.131@SEA - Week 15(2022)6.221WSH - Week 16(2022)7.337@LV - Week 17(2022)7.337@CLE - Week 6(2023)3.919@MIN - Week 7(2023)6.122CIN - Week 8 (2023)8.231GB - Divisional Rd (2024)5.624* YPP = yards per playOutside of the fiasco in windy Cleveland, where Christian McCaffrey was also hurt, there aren't any red flags. The offense didn't look its usual self last week, but is that due to Samuel's absence or Brock Purdy's discomfort in poor weather? That's also something Jared Goff has had struggles with in his career. Concern about either quarterback in suspect conditions isn't necessary, as AccuWeather describes this Sunday in Santa Clara as "a great afternoon for football."If the 49ers' offense, in more balmy conditions, can still flourish against a porous Detroit pass defense, what about Goff and the Lions?Having watched Aaron Jones repeatedly gash the Niners on the ground for 108 yards at better than five yards per carry, the Lions might have success against the worst run defense they'll have faced this postseason. San Francisco, usually with big leads by halftime, has rarely had to deal with a team committed to running the ball, and no one has a one-two punch like David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. These are the top two teams in the league at converting red-zone appearances into touchdowns, and neither team has been good at preventing them. It could be argued that the Packers lost last week's game at San Francisco when they couldn't convert early red-zone trips, and that game would have likely gone over the game total of 50.5 if Anders Carlson had made a 41-yard field goal.Kyle Shanahan continued to show that he's painfully conservative in his decision-making, and Matt LaFleur's not exactly a gambler, but Dan Campbell's willing to accept the calculated risks an underdog should be taking. With at least one head coach playing it fast and loose and two highly efficient red-zone offenses in good conditions, we can expect the scoring we should have had last week at Levi's Stadium - all while not having to worry about where the point spread goes. Plus, we'll consider it a bonus if Samuel can suit up to help increase scoring potential.Pick: Over 51.5 pointsMatt Russell is the lead betting analyst for theScore. NFL confident in 'great team' maintaining grass for Super Bowl
Plenty of criticism surrounded the field conditions at Super Bowl LVII in 2023, but the NFL says the grass is in good hands leading up to this year's big game.Peter O'Reilly, the NFL's executive vice president of club business and league events, told Tashan Reed of The Athletic that the league has a "great team" looking after the field at Nevada's Allegiant Stadium for Super Bowl LVIII."We have brought in - as we do each year - a brand new natural grass surface that is currently installed in the field tray outside Allegiant Stadium," O'Reilly said Thursday. "That has been in for a little bit now and is working through all of our standard testing procedures that will take place over the time from installation all the way up through that Saturday right before the game."Those adjustments and a core maintenance program are in place, so we have an optimal field on game day. We have a great team maintaining it as we head up to the Super Bowl."Players struggled to keep their footing throughout last year's Super Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35. Longtime NFL groundskeeper George Toma said he believed the poor field conditions resulted from the grass being overwatered.Super Bowl LVIII is scheduled to take place on Feb. 11. Titans coach Callahan open to Derrick Henry return in 2024
New Tennesse Titans head coach Brian Callahan is leaving the door open for a potential Derrick Henry return ahead of the 2024 offseason."I think a player like Derrick Henry fits in every offense," Callahan said on 102.5 & 106.3 The Game. "He's been a remarkable player; he's been the face of the franchise here for a long time. When you think of the Tennessee Titans, you think of Derrick Henry. He's earned that."Look, if he is open to a return that fits for us, I'm never going to say no to good players. I know that he's been an incredible leader in this building as well, which also carries a lot of weight. You can find ways to use every player. There's no offensive system that would say, 'I don't like to have Derrick Henry here.'"The four-time Pro Bowl tailback is expected to test free agency this offseason as his contract expires in March. The 30-year-old - who's the Titans' all-time leader in rushing touchdowns - seemingly bid farewell to Tennessee fans at the end of the 2023 regular season following his potential last game with the team.Henry topped the NFL in rushing yards and touchdowns in 2019 and 2020. He became only the eighth player in league history to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single campaign in 2020 en route to being named Offensive Player of the Year that season.Though Henry has led the NFL in rushing attempts in each of the last two seasons, his production has dropped. He averaged 4.2 yards per carry in 2023 - tying a career low - while recording 68.6 rushing yards per game, his worst mark since 2018.Callahan said he still believes Henry can produce at a high level, though."I certainly think he's got some gas left in the tank, too," added Callahan, who was announced as the Titans' new head coach this week to replace Mike Vrabel after five seasons as the Cincinnati Bengals' offensive coordinator."We'll see how that goes. I know he's gonna hit the market, probably, and try to see what's out there for him, but I would never say no to a player like that."No player has amassed more yards and touchdowns on the ground than Henry since he entered the NFL in 2016. Jaguars GM commits to Lawrence extension, Allen return
Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke doesn't see quarterback Trevor Lawrence or star pass-rusher Josh Allen going anywhere.Baalke told reporters Thursday that he had "no doubt" that Lawrence, who is eligible for a new deal, was the franchise's long-term quarterback and that an extension would get signed at some point in the future, according to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe."We're going to get something done at the appropriate time," Baalke said, per NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano. On the other side of the ball, Baalke promised that Allen "is going to be a Jaguar next year," per Wolfe.Allen is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason but has seen his value skyrocket after posting a career-high 17.5 sacks this campaign. Baalke added that negotiations haven't started yet. The front office will also have the franchise tag at its disposal.Lawrence is coming off a shaky 2023 campaign in which he threw 21 touchdowns to 14 interceptions and posted an 8-8 record. His play noticeably dropped off down the stretch as he battled injuries. Lawrence threw seven interceptions over his final four games."I think Trevor had another learning year," Baalke mentioned, per Siciliano. The 2021 No. 1 pick is under contract through 2024, though the Jaguars can also exercise a fifth-year option to keep Lawrence under team control through 2025.Meanwhile, Baalke expressed less certainty toward the future of wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who is also slated for free agency. Ridley caught 76 balls for 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns in 2023."We would love to have Calvin back," Baalke said, according to NFL.com's Eric Edholm. "We are going to work through that. Saquon: I could see myself playing for another team
Saquon Barkley once imagined he'd only ever wear a New York Giants jersey during his career, but he says that changed once he got franchise tagged last offseason."Up until that moment, I really believe(d) that I was gonna finish my career as a New York Giant," Barkley told Complex's Zion Olojede. "You know, that was a goal of mine. And that's still in play. I have so much respect for the Mara family and the Tisch family and everyone in the Giants organization."He added: "They know that, but once you get to this point, you go to your contract negotiation and you go through the tag process, you realize how much of a business it is. ... So, could I see myself in another uniform? Yeah, it's possible."The Giants running back said he'd love to follow in the footsteps of Eli Manning, Tiki Barber, and Michael Strahan but added that he's not "naive" to what the future might hold."I'm at ease (with) whatever happens," he said. "I would love for it to be done, but if it can't and I'm able to move on, I would love to go to a team where I can help them win the Super Bowl, for sure."Barkley is scheduled to be a free agent this offseason. Fangio done with Dolphins, reportedly will be Eagles DC
Former Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is set to sign a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles to come on board in the same role, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The Dolphins and Fangio agreed to part ways Wednesday after one season together."When we assessed the season, it became apparent that this was the best path forward for all parties involved," head coach Mike McDaniel said in a statement.A report following Fangio's Miami departure indicated the Eagles were targeting the veteran coach for their defensive coordinator vacancy. The Dolphins apparently allowed Fangio to leave so he could be closer to his family in Pennsylvania. The Eagles are in the midst of overhauling their coaching staff under Nick Sirianni with openings at offensive and defensive coordinator. Sean Desai began the 2023 season as Philadelphia's defensive coordinator before his play-calling duties were handed to Matt Patricia near the end of the campaign. Neither assistant will return in 2024.Sirianni, who was speaking to the media when rumors broke of the Eagles' interest, was mum on the potential of adding Fangio initially. We got a lot of good targets we're working through," the head coach said, according to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer.Fangio has ties to the Eagles as he worked as a consultant for the franchise in 2022. He previously said it's possible he would've become Philly's defensive coordinator in 2023 if the position had opened sooner.Miami's defense under Fangio finished 10th in yardage and 22nd in points allowed in 2023. The Niners made it to Super Bowl XLVII but fell short to the Baltimore Ravens and Harbaugh's brother, John.Harbaugh was among 15 candidates who spoke with the Chargers about their coaching vacancy. The longtime coach posted an 89-25 record during his tenure with Michigan. Over the past three seasons, the Wolverines established a 40-3 mark while qualifying for the CFP in each campaign."We have been discussing a new contract that would make Jim the highest-paid coach in college football," Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said. "We can't thank Jim enough for all that he has done for our student-athletes, staff and Michigan Football.Harbaugh's return to the NFL has been in the works over the past few years. Sirianni: Eagles' offense 'stale' in season's final stretch
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni addressed Philadelphia's struggles during the team's end-of-season press conference on Wednesday along with general manager Howie Roseman.Sirianni believes that bringing in new coordinators will help make his team less predictable in 2024."We got a little stale on offense at the end of the year," the sideline boss said, according to Brooks Kubena of The Athletic. "The new person is meant to take away the staleness."The Eagles began the 2023 season as one of the NFL's best teams with a 10-1 record. But Philadelphia regressed as the campaign progressed and lost six of its final seven games, including the playoffs.Following a 32-9 wild-card loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Eagles parted ways with offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and defensive coordinator Sean Desai. Philadelphia also didn't retain Matt Patricia, who replaced Desai as the club's defensive play-caller in the season's final stretch.Sirianni's outfit has reportedly begun interviewing candidates to fill those vacancies. The team met with Ron Rivera about its defensive coordinator job and is also interested in Vic Fangio, a longtime DC who recently parted ways with the Miami Dolphins. Offensively, the Eagles are considering multiple candidates, including former Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury."The new (offensive) coordinator will be heavily involved. He is bringing in a scheme for us to be able to function in," Sirianni said, according to 97.5 The Fanatic. There was speculation about Sirianni's future after the loss to Tampa Bay. However, several Eagles players have shown support for the sideline boss, who is 34-17 across three years with Philly. Roseman also backed Sirianni on Wednesday."Before the stretch, we were 26-5 ... that is hard to do in this league," he said. "We were 33-11 up to that point. Not okay finishing 1-6. But it is hard to find someone who can do that."Under Sirianni's watch, the Eagles have made the playoffs three times and played in Super Bowl LVII when they ultimately fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs."Just hungry to be able to prove myself again," Sirianni said Wednesday, per Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia.Roseman also shouldered the blame for Philadelphia's season disappointing outcome."When I have my best seasons, this team has its best seasons. He's thrown for 750 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions in those matchups while adding 303 yards and another three scores on the ground. The 2019 MVP could get some additional help for Sunday's matchup as tight end Mark Andrews may return against Kansas City. Matt Patricia took over for Desai but is apparently out of contract and won't return to the Eagles for next season. After two years as the club's quarterbacks coach, Johnson took over as Philadelphia's offensive coordinator following Shane Steichen's departure to become the Indianapolis Colts' head coach ahead of the 2023 season.Despite Philadelphia finishing seventh in points scored (25.5) this year, its offense regressed. The team averaged the third-most points in the regular season (28.1) and topped all playoff teams (34.7) en route to a Super Bowl appearance during the 2022 campaign.Jalen Hurts' play significantly declined with Johnson as his offensive coordinator, with his interception total jumping from six in 2022 to 15 this season. The quarterback also averaged only 7.2 yards per attempt after an 8.0 mark in 2023 and threw only one more touchdown and 157 more yards despite 78 more attempts. The direction of the team's offensive scheme reportedly disappointed Hurts this campaign, and a disconnect between the signal-caller's vision, Johnson, and head coach Nick Sirianni led to the unit's inconsistency.Philadelphia collapsed down the stretch, losing five of its last six regular-season games before suffering a blowout upset loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in which the offense scored just nine points.Sirianni was seemingly on the hot seat after losing to the Bucs, but he appears safe, with a press conference for the coach and general manager Howie Roseman scheduled for Wednesday. The Eagles' disappointing results didn't stop teams from adding Johnson to their candidate list for coaching vacancies. Johnson received head coaching interviews from the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans, who reportedly hired Brian Callahan.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Bills GM: Diggs is a No. 1 WR
General manager Brandon Beane reaffirmed the Buffalo Bills' commitment to Stefon Diggs despite the wide receiver's dip in production midway through the 2023 season."He's a No. 1 receiver," Beane said Tuesday. "I firmly believe that, I'm not wavering off of that."Diggs appeared on track to remain a focal point of Buffalo's offense early in the season, recording 49 receptions for 620 yards and five touchdowns through the first six games. Yet the three-time Pro Bowler averaged 41 yards per contest and recorded zero touchdowns in his final seven games, including the Bills' two postseason matchups. His seven drops were tied for the eighth-highest mark in the league.Diggs recorded three receptions on eight targets for 21 yards in the club's divisional-round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The 2020 first-team All-Pro failed to haul in a long pass attempt from quarterback Josh Allen in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game. The drive was Buffalo's final of the game after Tyler Bass missed a 44-yard field goal. The Bills' young offensive stars, such as Khalil Shakir and Dalton Kincaid, proved to be Allen's most reliable targets in the contest. However, Beane is confident No. 14 can still provide meaningful snaps."Stef can still play, I'm sure he would love to have that deep ball again, he'd be the first to tell you. He's super competitive, he's gonna work his tail off this offseason," he said.Diggs couldn't regain his All-Pro form after the team dismissed offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey and named Joe Brady the interim in November. The decline in production left many in the organization puzzled, including head coach Sean McDermott."I can't say in particular why specifically (Diggs' production dropped)," McDermott said. "If I could, we would flip it back that way, right? To the way it started earlier in the year."Diggs wasn't spotted during the teams' locker cleanout. However, the 30-year-old has been on record with his desire to remain with the Bills. He signed a four-year, $96-million contract extension in April 2022, according to Over the Cap.The Maryland product led all Bills pass-catchers with 107 receptions for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns in 2023.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Raiders hire Telesco as GM
The Las Vegas Raiders hired Tom Telesco as their next general manager, the team announced Tuesday. The Los Angeles Chargers fired Telesco, alongside coach Brandon Staley, in December after 11 seasons as GM.The 51-year-old produced an 84-95 record and three playoff appearances with the Chargers. Telesco boasts an impressive record of first-round draft picks, including quarterback Justin Herbert, pass-rusher Joey Bosa, wide receiver Mike Williams, and safety Derwin James. The Raiders are pairing Telesco with Antonio Pierce, who earned the full-time head coaching role following an impressive stint as the interim coach.Pierce took over after the Raiders fired head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler in early November, with Champ Kelly named interim GM.Kelly and the Indianapolis Colts' Ed Dodds were widely viewed as the top contenders for the permanent role. However, the Raiders got "cold feet" about pairing a first-time coach with a first-time GM and pivoted to Telesco after bringing him in for a second interview Monday, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bears hire Shane Waldron as OC
The Chicago Bears hired former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron for the same role, the team announced Tuesday.Waldron was hired by Pete Carroll in 2021 and was with Seattle for the last three seasons. He held various offensive coaching positions under Sean McVay in Los Angeles, including quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, for four campaigns before landing with the Seahawks. The 44-year-old has three years of offensive play-calling experience. Former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson approved of Waldron's hire in 2021 due to his willingness to run an up-tempo offense, according to ESPN.Waldron played a crucial role in resurrecting Geno Smith's career and helped the 33-year-old make the Pro Bowl in 2022. Seattle's offense ranked 10th in points per game that season, and Smith set career highs in passing yards and touchdowns. The Bears and head coach Matt Eberflus interviewed many candidates for the job, including former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury, Greg Roman, and Thomas Brown. The Los Angeles Chargers blocked an interview request for their offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.Waldron will be in charge of revamping a Bears offense that hasn't ranked in the top 10 in scoring since 2018. Chicago currently holds the No. 1 overall pick, which could be used on a new franchise quarterback.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Chargers' offer to Harbaugh 'extremely strong'
Jim Harbaugh's return to the NFL could finally be imminent. The Los Angeles Chargers have made an "extremely strong offer" to Harbaugh to become their next head coach and are in "striking distance" of securing a deal, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. The Chargers and the Michigan coach - who are reportedly meeting for a second time Tuesday - are at the point in negotiations where they're discussing potential candidates for general manager and the coaching staff, adds Garafolo.
Report: Texans' Slowik set for 2nd interview with Commanders, Falcons
Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik is slated for second interviews with the Washington Commanders and Atlanta Falcons for their head coaching vacancies, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.Slowik, who is a hot candidate this coaching cycle, interviewed virtually with the Commanders, Falcons, and Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. His second meeting with Washington is set for Tuesday and will be in-person, Rapoport adds. His next interview with Atlanta is scheduled for an unknown date later this week. He's not the only coach who's lined up for a second interview by the two teams. The Commanders and Falcons are both expected to head to Detroit next week to talk to Lions coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Slowik was not permitted to conduct in-person interviews until the divisional round of the playoffs finished. The Texans coordinator garnered praise for turning rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud and Co. into a dynamic offense in 2023. Houston ranked 13th in scoring, 12th in yards, and marched to the divisional round after putting 45 points on the Cleveland Browns in the wild-card round.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. McDermott: Bills don't need to 'start over'
Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott doesn't believe his team needs to start from scratch after another disappointing playoff exit."This is not a situation where you strip it down to the studs and start over," McDermott told reporters Tuesday, including Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic. The Bills lost to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday after Tyler Bass' game-tying field-goal attempt with less than two minutes left sailed wide right. Buffalo has won 11-plus games in each of its last three seasons but hasn't advanced past the divisional round in that span. While the Bills have made the playoffs in six of the seven campaigns under McDermott, the coach has only one AFC Championship Game appearance on his resume. When asked how he can get his team to advance further to validate the postseason trips, McDermott responded, "That's what I go to bed thinking about," according to NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano.Buffalo's kryptonite in the playoffs has been Kansas City. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes owns a 3-0 postseason record against the Bills, including an AFC title game win in 2020 and a thrilling come-from-behind rally in 2021.Despite the lack of wins against their nemesis, McDermott said he believes the Bills aren't far off from the Chiefs, who have appeared in six conference title games and three Super Bowls with Mahomes."When we first met (the Chiefs) in playoffs, we weren't close. Now we are close," McDermott said, according to Chris Brown of OneBillsLive. "We have to find a way to pull past them. It starts with having a mindset where we are going for it. Playing to win and go for it."Bills quarterback Josh Allen made similar comments as his coach Monday, saying he believes the team's Super Bowl window is still open."We're disappointed, yes," McDermott said, per Buscaglia. "But we're not broken."Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Chiefs-Bills tops 50M viewers to become most-watched divisional game ever
The Kansas City Chiefs-Buffalo Bills rivalry never disappoints, and the viewership numbers back that up.The Sunday playoff matchup between the two AFC powerhouses is the most-watched divisional-round game in NFL history and the first to surpass 50 million viewers, CBS announced Tuesday.Chiefs-Bills averaged 50.393 million viewers to break the previous divisional-round record held by the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers in 2017.Kansas City's dramatic 27-24 victory peaked at 56.25 million viewers and was Paramount Plus' most-streamed live event ever. The contest was the third postseason game between the reigning champion Chiefs and Bills since 2020. Kansas City won all three matchups, including an all-time overtime thriller during the 2021 season.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Allen: Bills' Super Bowl window remains open
Bills quarterback Josh Allen thinks that Buffalo's championship window is still open despite the team falling short of an AFC title game and Super Bowl appearance again this season."I believe in what we've got going on here and the people that are in charge," Allen said Monday, according to team reporter Maddy Glab. "I believe in myself, and that'll never change."Allen's comments come after a heartbreaking 27-24 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Buffalo has now failed to advance past the divisional round each year since losing to the Chiefs in the AFC title game in the 2020 season."When you do feel this way, it makes winning all that much more special," Allen said. "And this isn't something that we're going to run from. It's not something we're going to hide from. We got to take it on the chin and continue to learn and get better, and I know that's not what people want to hear. They want to see results. We want to see results.""At the end of the season, there's one happy team. We're gonna keep fighting and keep working as hard as we can until we are that one team," he added. The Bills roster 21 players who could test free agency in the upcoming offseason, including receiver Gabe Davis, safety Micah Hyde, and pass-rushers Leonard Floyd and A.J. Epenesa. But Allen remains optimistic about the Bills even though the team is projected to be $43 million over the salary cap in 2024, according to Spotrac."All signs are still pointing up with this team," the star passer said. "I know, it feels bleak. And there's probably going to be a lot of change, whether it's personnel, guys coming back, guys not playing again. That's all speculation."Allen completed 66.5% of his passes for 4,306 yards and 29 touchdowns against 18 interceptions in 2023. He also scored a career-high 15 rushing TDs, making him the only QB in NFL history to record at least 40 combined scores in four straight seasons. The 27-year-old accounted for three touchdowns versus Kansas City.Allen - who signed a six-year, $258-million extension with Buffalo in 2021 - also said Monday that he doesn't plan to undergo surgery this offseason. The 2018 first-round pick didn't miss any games in 2023 but was on the injury report for several weeks with a right shoulder ailment.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Panthers promote Morgan to GM
The Carolina Panthers are promoting Dan Morgan to president of football operations and general manager, the team announced Monday.Morgan, a former linebacker for Carolina, has been the team's assistant GM since 2021. The Panthers interviewed several candidates this year but opted to promote an in-house executive who's familiar with the franchise."Dan has a thorough knowledge of our football personnel and a clear vision to take us where we all want to go," Panthers owner David Tepper said in a statement. "We know he will attack this opportunity with the same intensity he did as a Panthers player."Morgan played for the Panthers from 2001-07, registering 390 tackles in 59 appearances. He was a first-round pick in '01 and had one Pro Bowl nod ('04) over his career. The 45-year-old will replace Scott Fitterer, who was fired Jan. 8 after three seasons. He'll inherit a team looking for a new head coach and under a lot of pressure after drafting quarterback Bryce Young first overall in 2023.Carolina hasn't made the playoffs since 2017 and went an NFL-worst 2-15 in 2023, ranking in the bottom five in points scored and allowed. The club doesn't have a first-round pick in the 2024 draft after sending its selection to the Chicago Bears as part of the trade to pick Young last year.Improving Young's supporting cast likely will be the Panthers' top priority after the Alabama product struggled as a rookie. The 22-year-old finished Year 1 with only 11 touchdown passes against 10 interceptions. The Panthers have interviewed 12 head coaching candidates so far this year.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. Mayo: Rebuilding Patriots 'ready to burn some cash'
New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo is optimistic his team will undergo a successful rebuild during the 2024 offseason."We're bringing in talent, 1,000%," Mayo said Monday on "The Greg Hill Show." "We have a lot of cap space and cash. We're ready to burn some cash."Mayo, a former linebackers coach in New England, was named the team's sideline boss on Jan. 12 to replace Bill Belichick. The Patriots have posted back-to-back losing seasons, including a 4-13 record in 2023 - the franchise's worst campaign since 1992.The Pats boasted a top-10 defense this season but struggled offensively all year, particularly at quarterback. Mac Jones (11 starts) and Bailey Zappe (six) threw for 16 touchdowns against 21 interceptions combined.Mayo's outfit heads into the offseason with a projected $70 million in salary cap space - the fourth-most in the NFL, according to Spotrac. New England also owns the No. 3 pick in the 2024 draft. But the Patriots have to address several roster weaknesses and a major question mark at the sport's most important position."We're going to take the best available player for the biggest need on the team," the first-year coach said."Offensive line, receiver, quarterback, pick your choice," he added. It'll be hard for the Patriots to become contenders in the AFC East again, as the division features three high-profile starting signal-callers: The New York Jets have four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, while the Buffalo Bills roster Josh Allen, who this season became the only QB ever to account for 40-plus touchdowns in four straight campaigns. Meanwhile, Tua Tagovailoa is coming off his most productive season with the Miami Dolphins."I wouldn't say it worries me," Mayo said when asked about the AFC East's competitiveness. "First and foremost, we're going to put a good defense out there. We're going to play these teams twice a year, whatever it is, but I feel fairly confident that we'll be better next year."Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Jaguars hiring Falcons DC Nielsen in same role
The Jacksonville Jaguars are hiring Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen in the same role, the team announced Monday."We're excited to welcome Ryan and have him lead our defense moving forward," head coach Doug Pederson said in a statement. "Ryan is an outstanding football coach, and his defenses with the Falcons and Saints were always fundamentally sound in both their physicality and concepts."Nielsen joined the Falcons in 2023 after working as the New Orleans Saints' co-defensive coordinator in 2022. The 44-year-old began his NFL coaching career with the Saints in 2017 as a defensive line coach."He has the rare ability to both teach and connect with his players," Pederson continued. "He builds lasting, two-way relationships predicated on trust. He establishes accountability, first from himself, then the players."Atlanta's defense allowed 21.9 points (18th in the NFL) and 321.1 total yards (11th) per game this season. The team also forced 16 turnovers. The Jaguars gave up 21.8 points and 342.8 yards per contest with 27 takeaways under former defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell in 2023.Jacksonville's defense features linebacker Foyesade Oluokun, pass-rusher Travon Walker, and cornerback Darious Williams, among others. The club's top edge defender, Josh Allen, racked up 17.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss this season. However, he's currently slated to hit free agency.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Shanahan: Deebo avoided shoulder fracture, status TBD
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel didn't fracture his shoulder Saturday against the Green Bay Packers, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Monday, according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows. However, Samuel is still experiencing a lot of pain and is uncertain for Sunday's NFC Championship Game, Shanahan added.Shanahan also said he thinks he'll have a better idea of Samuel's status Wednesday.Samuel didn't play in the second half of the 49ers' 24-21 victory over the Packers due to the shoulder ailment. He finished the contest with 24 yards on two receptions. The 28-year-old missed two weeks during the regular season with a shoulder injury.Jauan Jennings, Chris Conley, and Ray-Ray McCloud could all see an increase in playing time if Samuel can't play against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.Samuel finished third on the team in receiving this season with 892 yards, but he also had 225 yards rushing in 15 games. The South Carolina product scored 12 total touchdowns on his 97 touches.Copyright (C) 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
