Ramsey: Trade request came after 'disrespectful' talk with Jaguars
Jalen Ramsey's desire to leave the Jacksonville Jaguars apparently stems from a "disrespectful" conversation he had with the team's decision-makers.In an appearance Thursday on Uninterrupted's "17 Weeks" podcast, the star cornerback explained why he requested a trade away from the Jaguars, though he opted not to name who the discussion was with."Some disrespectful things were said on their end that made me definitely walk out and call my agent as soon as I walked out, and I told him, I said, 'It's time; my time is up here in Jacksonville. I want to ask for a trade,'" Ramsey said, according to ESPN's Michael DiRocco. "I was truly at peace. I wasn't in a mindset of making a decision while I was angry; I was completely calm. I still stand by my decision to ask for a trade."Ramsey suited up for Thursday Night Football against the Tennessee Titans despite the fact that he reportedly doesn't expect to be with Jacksonville by Week 4.The Jaguars apparently considered trading Ramsey last season. The Pro Bowler later said he would ask for an "ungodly" amount of money to re-sign with the Jaguars.Ramsey admitted that his frustration with Jacksonville's front office, and subsequent desire to leave, has "been building over a little bit of time.""It has nothing to do with my teammates here - I love my teammates here. It has nothing to do with the city - I love the city here," said Ramsey. "Still doing my charity work here, still out with the fans, signing autographs, taking pictures, whatever. I love the city here, I love my teammates, but it's more so with the front office and the organization."While the Jaguars no longer are interested in having Ramsey as part of their future, the cornerback reportedly isn't short of suitors. The Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, and Seattle Seahawks have all made substantive inquiries, while nearly every NFL team has contacted the Jaguars about a potential trade.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Dolphins claim former 1st-rounder Charlton off waivers
The Miami Dolphins have claimed defensive end and former Dallas Cowboys first-round pick Taco Charlton off waivers, the team announced.Incidentally, the Dolphins square off against Charlton's old team in Week 3. It remains to be seen whether he'll be ready to suit up for Miami.Charlton collected only four sacks in two seasons with the Cowboys. He was inactive for the first two games this year.Dallas used the 28th overall pick in the 2017 draft on Charlton, who played collegiately at Michigan. The Cowboys waived him after failing to find a trade partner. In a corresponding move, Miami waived offensive lineman Bryan Witzmann.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Dolphins to start Rosen vs. Cowboys
The Miami Dolphins are benching Ryan Fitzpatrick and giving Josh Rosen the start at quarterback Sunday versus the Dallas Cowboys, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Although the Dolphins acquired Rosen from the Arizona Cardinals for a second-round pick during the NFL draft, he wasn't able to beat out Fitzpatrick for the starting job in training camp.Rosen saw brief action in each of the first two weeks, going 8-for-21 for 102 yards and two interceptions in blowout losses. Fitzpatrick went 25-for-50 for 274 yards with one touchdown and four picks in his starts.Rosen, the 10th overall pick in the 2018 draft, completed 55.2% of his passes for 2,278 yards with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for Arizona as a rookie.Miami has registered just 10 points through two losses to begin the season.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Antonio Brown loses Nike deal
Nike has ended its sponsorship of controversial New England Patriots wide receiver Antonio Brown, the company has confirmed."Antonio Brown is not a Nike athlete," a Nike spokesperson told Michael Silverman of The Boston Globe on Wednesday.Nike did not explain its decision, nor the timing of the move. Brown, 31, is being sued by his former personal trainer over rape allegations. The lawsuit was filed one day after Brown signed his contract with the Patriots. In February, a month before the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Brown to the Oakland Raiders, the apparel producer launched the "Nike Tech Trainer Antonio Brown" shoe.Steelers jerseys with Brown's name and number were still available for purchase on Nike's online store as of Thursday.Brown, who's been involved in various off-field dramas over the last several months, also recently lost an endorsement deal with helmet manufacturer Xenith.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Ramsey doesn't expect to be with Jaguars for Week 4
Jalen Ramsey doesn't mind suiting up for Thursday Night Football this week, but the cornerback doesn't anticipate being a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars by next Sunday, a source told ESPN's Josina Anderson.Nearly every NFL club has called the Jaguars to inquire about a potential deal for Ramsey, Anderson reports, with the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, and Seattle Seahawks all making substantive inquiries.Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone confirmed the disgruntled defender will suit up against the Tennessee Titans.Ramsey spoke with the media Tuesday but declined to directly address the trade request his agent confirmed Monday. He also denied previous reports that his desire to be dealt is the result of last week's sideline altercation with Marrone.Jacksonville has reportedly set its asking price for the 24-year-old at two first-round picks.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Nagy remaining confident in Bears' offense despite poor start
The Chicago Bears scored just 19 points through two games this season, which is good for 31st in the NFL. However, head coach Matt Nagy isn't panicking after his offense's slow start."We want to figure this thing out," Nagy said, according to Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune. "We have time to do that. And we feel like we will ... Eventually, it'll crack. And when it does, I think it's going to be pretty good."The Bears squeaked out a 16-14 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 2 after Eddy Pineiro drilled a game-winning 53-yard field goal as time expired.Nagy's scoring unit, however, failed to move the ball consistently in Denver, managing just 273 yards of total offense. While he's working to improve the deficiencies, the bench boss is recognizing the positives as well."We didn't give them a short field with any interceptions or fumbles," Nagy said. "And overall in two games, with there being a lot more negatives than positives offensively, we've done a good job protecting the football."That's given us a chance. For trying to figure out who we are and what we do and how good we're going to do it, that has helped us out."Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is at the center of Chicago's offensive struggles this season. He's averaged 4.8 yards per attempt and has yet to throw a touchdown pass. The Bears take on the Washington Redskins, Minnesota Vikings, and Oakland Raiders in their next three contests before a Week 6 bye. Of that trio, only the Vikings rank in the top half of the league in total defense.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Newton misses 2nd straight practice, reportedly unlikely to play Week 3
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton missed his second straight practice Thursday as he nurses his mid-foot sprain, according to The Athletic's Joe Person. With little progress made, Newton appears unlikely to be cleared for Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. The former MVP was still sporting a walking boot Wednesday and reportedly won't be cleared for game action if he doesn't practice this week.Newton aggravated the foot injury he suffered during the preseason in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Carolina considers him day-to-day.Second-year undrafted free agent Kyle Allen will start if Newton misses time. Allen played in two games last season, starting one. 3 teams looking for answers after 0-2 starts
Some NFL teams have enjoyed fairy-tale starts to the 2019 campaign, while others have experienced nightmares over the first two weeks of September.A trio of underachievers are desperately seeking answers after stumbling to 0-2 marks:Carolina PanthersAnswers will be tough to come by without quarterback Cam Newton, who aggravated a preseason foot injury and could be hobbled for at least a little while. Whether he's in the lineup each week or not, the Panthers must find a way to get the passing game going; their aerial attack was sluggish against both the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, two teams that struggled to defend the pass a year ago. Newton, in fact, hasn't thrown a touchdown in two games. With the rest of the roster fairly stable, it's on him and offensive coordinator Norv Turner get Carolina off the schneid.New York JetsTalk about a tailspin. The Jets spent nearly $200 million in free agency, only to blow a 16-0 lead in their season opener at home against the division rival Buffalo Bills before ultimately finding themselves in an 0-2 hole. Then they lost quarterback Sam Darnold to mononucleosis, linebacker C.J. Mosley to a groin injury, and rookie defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to an ankle issue. It's only been two games, but Le'Veon Bell hasn't looked like the guy who made three Pro Bowls in five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Gang Green will struggle to stack together wins until he finds his groove. Head coach Adam Gase has his work cut out.Denver BroncosJoe Flacco was brought in to stabilize the Broncos' offense, but the unit has looked porous through two contests. Denver ranks 28th in scoring at a mere 15 points per game and has shown no ability to move the chains with any sort of consistency. Flacco hasn't received much help from his offensive line; left tackle Garett Bolles was flagged for holding four times in the team's Week 2 loss to the Chicago Bears. Defensively, Von Miller and Bradley Chubb are still looking for their first sacks as the unit as a whole is still without a takeaway. A Week 3 date with the undefeated Green Bay Packers could set the Broncos back even more.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Jets' Adams, Johnson upset with benchings
Two weeks into his stint as head coach of the New York Jets, Adam Gase had to address brewing dissension within the ranks on Wednesday.Star safety and defensive leader Jamal Adams was upset about being taken out of the game late in Monday night's lopsided 23-3 loss to the Cleveland Browns. Cornerback Trumaine Johnson, the second-highest-paid player on the team, barely saw the field."Yeah, I got benched. They benched me," Adams said, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN."Of course I'm upset," said Johnson, adding he "didn't agree with" the decision.Gase had different explanations for both scenarios. He said he took Adams out after he took two penalties in the fourth quarter just to give the fiery player a moment to cool down."I thought he was getting fired up pretty good, and I clicked over (to the defensive coaches) and I was like, 'Hey, we need to be careful here,'" Gase said. "I was worried that something bad was going to happen, we need him for the next week. They were smart and they pulled him off. I said, 'Just calm him down,' and then we were off the field."To me, I didn't look at that as benching. That was more like, 'Hey, let's just calm him down.' There was no hidden meaning behind it."As for Johnson, his benching was intentional. Signed for five years and $72.5 million last March, the cornerback allowed seven receptions on eight targets while giving up 110 yards and a 118.8 passer rating against in the team's Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills. He played just three snaps late in the fourth quarter on Monday night."It hasn't worked out as well as we need it to," Gase said. "The good thing is, we've got a long ways to go."In the spring, there was some good stuff. In training camp, he got injured and there were good days and bad days. Obviously, there was the evaluation after (Week 1). That's what we went with."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Thursday Night Football betting preview: Titans vs. Jaguars
Titans vs. Jaguars: A Thursday Night Football traditional unfortunately like no other. As if prime-time games so far this season haven't already been aesthetically lacking (more on this later), bettors now get the two most boring teams out of the AFC South. But despite a potential lack of fireworks, there's a lot to unpack for both sides heading into Thursday. Tennessee is playing on a short week after losing at home as a favorite to Indianapolis, while Jacksonville, still with a backup quarterback, is dealing with a disgruntled Jalen Ramsey, who's now on the trading block. With all that to account for, let's look at the line movements, angles, and more for Thursday.Line movementThe spread's been pretty calm throughout the week. The Titans opened as 1.5-point favorites and hit -2, but came back down to -1.5, where they currently are. The market's had to adjust for a plethora of backup quarterbacks already, including Gardner Minshew, who's filling in for Nick Foles. The look-ahead line on this game was previously Jacksonville -3.5 prior to Foles' injury. It's been mostly "under" money so far on the total. Opening up at 40, that number's ticked down to 39 early on.Betting breakdownNow to the aesthetics of prime-time games ... or lack thereof. All seven games so far this season have gone under the first-half total, while the full-game under is 6-1. "Prime-time" games, they said. The under has hit in seven of the last nine meetings between the two clubs when played in Jacksonville, though the over has cashed in five of the last seven overall. The Titans have covered in each of the last four games off a loss against the spread (ATS), while the Jags have lost their last four ATS the week after covering. Tennessee's owned the rivalry the last two years, covering the spread in all four games and outscoring the Jags 91-41 over that span.Important trendsTennessee's offense has been terrible as a road favorite of late. The Titans are on a perfect 6-0 run to the team total under when laying points away from home. Here are Tennessee's results in these situations:Opponent ResultGiantsW 17-0BillsL 13-12DolphinsL 27-20CardinalsL 12-7ColtsW 20-16BrownsW 12-9Averaging a shade better than 14 points per game isn't going to get the job done.X-factorTitans running back Derrick Henry went off for 238 yards in the last meeting against Jacksonville and should have success again. The Jaguars have faced two pass-happy offenses in Kansas City and New Orleans to start the year, but have allowed more than 80 yards or more on the ground to an opposing running back in back-to-back weeks. Henry's already rushed for 84 and 82 yards against the Browns and Colts, respectively, to start the year, and has had at least 15 carries in six straight games dating back to last season. The Titans don't seem to trust quarterback Marcus Mariota to beat teams through the air, making Henry Thursday night's X-factor.PickMarcus Mariota Under 197.5 passing yardsDivisional prime-time clashes have yielded some odd results. It's also tough to gauge how teams will perform on short rest. Then you throw in the question marks surrounding Jacksonville and it becomes increasingly more difficult to cap. Minshew played well in relief for Foles in the Jags' opener then laid an egg against a so-so Texans pass defense. What do we get from him in Week 3? Also, there's a good chance Ramsey plays his last game with Jacksonville this Thursday. There's a lot to sort out when accounting for the spread or total, so I'll pass and hit this Mariota player prop.I thought it was more interesting to make a case against Mariota in the same situation noted earlier - how the Titans' offense has fared as a road favorite - instead of the general matchup against the Jaguars. Mariota's single-game high in this spot over the last six contests is 203 yards, which came against the Browns in 2017. Overall, he's averaging 144.3 yards through the air when the Titans are a road favorite over that six-game sample. If the Jaguars can hold Deshaun Watson to 16-for-29 passing for 154 yards, they should have no problem containing the Titans' passing game.Alex Kolodziej is a betting writer for theScore. Report: Njoku may need surgery for broken wrist
In addition to a concussion suffered on a hard fall in Monday night's game, Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku has a wrist injury that could require surgery, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing a source.NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the injury is a broken wrist.Njoku is seeking other medical opinions before determining whether he'll need to go under the knife. The third-year pro is an important part of the Browns' offense. He posted career highs in receptions (56) and yards (639) in 2018 and added four touchdowns. Njoku had four catches for 37 yards and a touchdown in the Browns' season-opening loss to the Tennessee Titans. The Browns also have Pharaoh Brown, Demetrius Harris, and Ricky Seals-Jones at tight end.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Payton: Saints will have 2 QBs for Seahawks matchup
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton indicated Wednesday that his team will not have a firm No. 1 quarterback for Week 3's contest against the Seattle Seahawks."We'll approach this game with two QBs," Payton said, according to the Times-Picayune's Rod Walker. "We'll have the right plan relative to what those guys are going to be doing."Most observers had expected New Orleans to go with Teddy Bridgewater as the primary quarterback against Seattle, but Payton suggested Taysom Hill may also get his fair share of plays under center."You're assuming he's the No. 2," Payton replied when asked if Hill's other roles would be limited now that he's the backup quarterback, according to Walker. The QB questions come after future Hall of Famer Drew Brees went down in Week 2 with a thumb injury that required surgery and is expected to sideline him for around six weeks.During last week's 27-9 loss to the Rams, it was Bridgewater, the more conventional of New Orleans' two remaining pivots, who came in to relieve Brees. He went 17 of 30 for 165 yards through the air.Hill only received two carries for 8 yards during the Week 2 contest. The third-year man is a jack-of-all-trades who can be found returning kicks, covering kicks, throwing, catching, and running the ball."He's going to be, I think, an outstanding NFL quarterback," Payton said of Hill in January before the NFC Championship Game, according to 247 Sports. "Last week, he threw a ball to (Alvin) Kamara that was perfect."The head coach also compared Hill to Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young in August.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cowboys release 2017 1st-rounder Charlton
The Dallas Cowboys have released defensive end Taco Charlton, the team announced.Dallas was reportedly keeping the door open for a possible trade involving the former first-round pick but was seemingly unable to find a partner, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The young pass-rusher reportedly came up in trade talks ahead of roster cut-downs at the end of preseason, and the Cowboys increased their efforts to move him in recent weeks.Veteran defensive end Robert Quinn will be added to the active roster after serving his two-game suspension, which would have left Charlton - who has been inactive in each of the first two weeks - further down the pecking order. The Cowboys selected Charlton No. 28 overall in the 2017 draft. He's accumulated just four sacks and one forced fumble in 27 professional games.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: Jaguars likely to trade Ramsey after TNF
It appears the Jacksonville Jaguars are likely to trade disgruntled cornerback Jalen Ramsey but don't expect a deal to be finalized imminently. The Jaguars are reportedly unlikely to move Ramsey prior to Thursday Night Football when they battle the Tennessee Titans, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who adds that Friday is the most likely target date.Head coach Doug Marrone told reporters Wednesday that Ramsey will suit up against Tennessee."Jalen and I have always had a good, open relationship," Marrone said, according to NFL Network's Tiffany Blackmon. "... We sat down yesterday and talked about what went on with him and I ... that's behind us right now."The 24-year-old spoke with the media Tuesday but declined to directly address his trade request, which his agent confirmed Monday.Ramsey denied previous reports that his desire to be moved was the result of a Week 2 altercation with Marrone.Jacksonville reportedly set its asking price for the two-time Pro Bowl defender at two first-round picks.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Brown won't be charged for 2017 incidents alleged in rape lawsuit
The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office and the Allegheny County Police Department in Pittsburgh informed Britney Taylor's lawyer that Antonio Brown won't be criminally charged for the first two incidents alleged in her sexual assault lawsuit due to statute of limitations, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Specifically, those alleged incidents will not be investigated because they took place more than two years ago. A third incident alleged in Taylor's lawsuit was said to have taken place in 2018 and could potentially be investigated."Our office, along with the Allegheny County Police Department, made contact with counsel for the plaintiff in the federal lawsuit involving Antonio Brown," the District Attorney's Office told ESPN in a statement. "Procedurally, it appears there is a statute of limitations issue in moving forward with any inquiry involving the Allegheny County allegation mentioned in the lawsuit."Taylor, Brown's former trainer, filed the lawsuit last week alleging that Brown sexually assaulted her on three separate occasions. Brown and his lawyer quickly denied all allegations and reportedly declined to sign a $2-million agreement to settle with her in April.Taylor met with the NFL for more than 10 hours on Monday, according to Rapoport. Meanwhile, Brown has not been placed on the commissioner's exempt list, which makes him eligible to play until further notice.Brown made his Patriots debut last week against the Miami Dolphins.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eli knew he might be benched, puts support behind Jones
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning spoke to the media on Wednesday for the first time since head coach Pat Shurmur made the decision to bench him for rookie Daniel Jones. For his part, Eli said the change didn't come as a shock."I knew there was a possibility ... I said I'd handle it and support Daniel and be a good teammate," Manning told reporters.Manning was characteristically emotionless when speaking about Jones' ascension to starter status, although he did express disappointment about losing his job. He also gave the No. 6 overall pick some lighthearted advice."Throw it to the guy wearing the same jersey you are," the veteran joked, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.However, Manning repeatedly dodged questions about whether he intends to finish out the season with the Giants."I'm just taking it day by day and figuring out how to run the scout team, that was my goal for today," Manning said. "I'll get into the futures later on. Right now I'm the second-string quarterback of the Giants."Overall, Eli tried to put a positive spin on losing his job as Giants starter for the first time in 15 years."I'm not dying and the season's not over," he said. "There's a lot to be positive about, a lot to be grateful for. I just have to accept my new role and make the best of it."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NFL Power Rankings - Week 3: One reason for optimism for every team
A panel of theScore's football editors put together the NFL Power Rankings.Week 2 was characterized by injuries, most notably a season-ending elbow injury for Ben Roethlisberger and a long-term thumb injury for Drew Brees. After this dreary slate of games, we provide one reason for all 32 teams to feel positive about the young 2019 season.1. New England Patriots (2-0)Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 1The Patriots' pillow-soft schedule (up next: Jets, Bills, Redskins, Giants, Jets) allows for Antonio Brown and Tom Brady to work out the kinks before the season gets serious.2. Kansas City Chiefs (2-0)Previous Rank: 2They've got Patrick Mahomes, but apparently his 821 passing yards and seven touchdowns with no picks through two weeks is regression? If that's what regression looks like, sign us up.3. Los Angeles Rams (2-0)Previous Rank: 4With Todd Gurley putting up 160 rushing yards and a touchdown on 30 carries through two weeks, it seems like the 25-year-old's creaky arthritic knee is holding up just fine for now (yes, he's only 25).4. Dallas Cowboys (2-0)Previous Rank: 8Any fears about Kellen Moore's credentials as an offensive play-caller have been dismissed early. The rookie coordinator's offense is humming along at 484 yards per game.5. Baltimore Ravens (2-0)Todd Olszewski / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 6Lamar Jackson has exceeded expectations. The sophomore leads all quarterbacks with a 145.2 passer rating, owns a league-best 7:0 touchdown-to-interception ratio, is averaging 10.5 yards per attempt, and he's completing 72% of his throws. Jackson is the primary reason for Baltimore's hot start.6. Green Bay Packers (2-0)Previous Rank: 10Green Bay's offense receives more attention, but Matt LaFleur's defense is outperforming his scoring unit. The Packers have allowed just 19 points through two games, and they've already recorded five takeaways. Kenny Clark is leading the charge and quickly asserting himself as one of the league's top defensive tackles.7. Seattle Seahawks (2-0)Previous Rank: 12Some say DK Metcalf is a three-trick route-running pony: He's got the go, the hitch, and the screen. A small bag of tricks would be a problem if Metcalf wasn't cashing in on those three greatest hits. But he's been productive, and that should continue.8. Philadelphia Eagles (1-1)Previous Rank: 5The Eagles are battling uneven play and a mountainous list of injuries, and they'll be playing two games over the next eight days. Despite all that, Philly was one big Julio Jones play away from being 2-0.9. Minnesota Vikings (1-1)Previous Rank: 7Dalvin Cook is running with a vengeance in his third season. Cook leads the league with 265 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns following a dominant Week 2 performance. No player has recorded more yards after contact than the 2017 second-round pick.10. Houston Texans (1-1)Tim Warner / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 11Houston's running game hasn't suffered with Carlos Hyde - a significant downgrade from Lamar Miler, on paper - taking the reins.11. Los Angeles Chargers (1-1)Previous Rank: 9The way Austin Ekeler (287 yards from scrimmage, four scores), and to a lesser extent Justin Jackson (116 yards on 13 carries) have played through two weeks must have La La Land ecstatic that the Charges didn't overpay the disgruntled Melvin Gordon.12. New Orleans Saints (1-1)Previous Rank: 3Teddy Bridgewater has the experience and surrounding talent to keep the Saints afloat while Drew Brees recovers from thumb surgery.13. Indianapolis Colts (1-1)Previous Rank: 16Jacoby Brissett has looked as good through two weeks as the Colts could have hoped.14. Atlanta Falcons (1-1)Previous Rank: 18The odds of Matt Ryan going through the season throwing multiple interceptions every week are extraordinarily low.15. Chicago Bears (1-1)Dustin Bradford / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 13Have no fear, Bears fans. Your kicking issues have finally been resolved after Eddy Pineiro nailed a 53-yard, game-winning field goal to snatch a victory over the Broncos. Pineiro is 4-for-4 kicking on the year and perfect from 50-plus yards.16. San Francisco 49ers (2-0)Previous Rank: 21When the Niners lost their top two RBs to injuries (representing a $9.35-million cap hit this year), it seemed like they were cursed. They reversed that with a quick trip to the running back bargain bin, where the trio of Raheem Mostert, Matt Brieda, and Jeff Wilson Jr. (who cost just over $3 million combined this year) was ready to supply the squad with 317 yards from scrimmage and a pair of touchdowns in Week 2.17. Cleveland Browns (1-1)Previous Rank: 17After a rough opening week, the Baker Mayfield-Odell Beckham Jr. connection finally got rolling on Monday night against the Jets. If OBJ continues to make plays like his 89-yard touchdown catch and run, Cleveland's offense will be extremely difficult to slow down moving forward.18. Buffalo Bills (2-0)Previous Rank: 20Sophomore quarterback Josh Allen appears to be settling into his own while leading a balanced offense that includes a ninth-ranked running game. The Bills' defense is also playing well, with the unit giving up just 30 points through two games.19. Pittsburgh Steelers (0-2)Previous Rank: 19An upgrade for the league's 29th-ranked pass defense is on the way after Pittsburgh landed versatile defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Dolphins. Report: Jaguars looking for two 1st-rounders for Ramsey
The Jacksonville Jaguars have reportedly set their asking price for cornerback Jalen Ramsey at two first-round picks, rival clubs told The MMQB's Albert Breer. An unnamed NFC team reportedly offered a 2020 first-rounder and a 2021 fifth-rounder for Ramsey, while an unnamed AFC squad proposed sending a 2020 first-rounder and a player in exchange for the defensive back, sources told ESPN's Dianna Russini.Ramsey said on a podcast over the summer that he'd like to play for his hometown Tennessee Titans, or the Raiders once they get to Las Vegas, if he doesn't remain in Jacksonville after the end of his current deal. The two-time Pro Bowler spoke with the media Tuesday but declined to directly address his trade request, which was confirmed by his agent Monday. However, he denied previous reports that the request was the result of his Week 2 altercation with head coach Doug Marrone.Ramsey is in his fourth season with Jacksonville. He's recorded the fifth-most deflected passes (45) in the league during his tenure while also securing nine interceptions and a first-team All-Pro nod in 2017.The Jaguars have been dismal since losing the 2017 AFC Championship Game. They finished 5-11 a year ago and started this season 0-2.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Darnold anticipating Week 5 return from bout with mono
The New York Jets are already down to their third-string quarterback after two weeks, but the team received some positive news on Tuesday.Starting quarterback Sam Darnold, who missed Week 2 with mononucleosis, is targeting a Week 5 return."The goal is Philly. Week 5 ... That's what the doctors are estimating for me," Darnold said Tuesday on "The Michael Kay Show," according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.It was initially reported the sophomore passer would miss multiple weeks, and then the timeline was updated to a three-to-seven-week absence.Darnold said he's already allowed back at the Jets' facility after just one week away, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. The 22-year-old said he wasn't feeling 100% during the team's season opener against the Buffalo Bills, and his body "decided to shut down" following the game. In addition to mono, he was also battling strep throat, according to the New York Post's Brian Costello. Darnold also said he's lost only two pounds while battling the illness. His return can't come soon enough for the snakebitten Jets. Backup quarterback Trevor Siemian was lost for the season after suffering an ankle injury on Monday night. Luke Falk, who made his NFL debut as Siemian's injury replacement, has already been announced as the team's starter for Week 3 against the New England Patriots.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vinatieri battling 'demons,' not considering retirement
Adam Vinatieri is far more interested in resolving his early-season struggles than retiring."I'm going to work a lot this week to get those demons so I can go clear-headed, step on the field, and just do my job," the longtime Indianapolis Colts kicker said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Mike Wells.Vinatieri is off to a hideous start in 2019. He's 1-for-3 on field-goal attempts and 2-for-5 on extra points. Historically, the 46-year-old has been one of the most reliable and clutch kickers in the game. After a pair of PAT misses in Week 2, Vinatieri seemed to be considering retirement. He told a reporter Sunday that he'd address the media the next day - even though the Colts had no such sessions scheduled."That was one (of) those situations that I was walking out of the locker room," he explained Tuesday. "Quite frankly, for two decades, we've always had open locker rooms on a Monday, and granted our schedule has changed as of last year. When I walked out saying I'll talk to you guys on Monday, I just needed a little bit more time. Like I said, none of us should assume stuff."The four-time Super Bowl champion explicitly noted that he wasn't mulling retirement. The Colts committed to sticking with him through his cold stretch. Head coach Frank Reich declared Monday: "There's no guy I trust more than Adam Vinatieri.""I think every time you step on the field you have a certain amount of pressure on you to succeed," the kicker said. "I don't think it changes much at all at that point. Obviously I would like to get back on the making side. As far as pressure, change, I don't think it makes that much of a difference."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Jaguars' Ramsey: 'All I care about is winning'
Warning: Story contains coarse languageA day after Jalen Ramsey's agent confirmed he'd requested a trade, the Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback addressed the media Tuesday, insisting he didn't want to distract his teammates.Ramsey wouldn't speak directly on the trade request or the motivation behind it, instead espousing "positive energy" and praising the organization, the city, the fans, and his teammates. However, the Jaguars cover man did insist that the news wasn't leaked by him or anyone on his personal team."All I care about is winning, man. Shit," said Ramsey. "Everybody know that. I wanna fucking win, straight up. Excuse my language. That passion, that fire, that heart ... I'mma continue giving that as long as I'm here."While the All-Pro maintained that he was focused on Thursday's game against the Tennessee Titans, he didn't seem sure he'd still be with the Jaguars. Asked whether he anticipated playing Thursday, Ramsey responded: "Yeah - shit, I think so."When asked about how he was being used as "arguably the best corner in the game," Ramsey interjected: "Ain't no argument."NFL Network's Ian Rapoport originally reported that Ramsey's trade request was motivated by a confrontation with head coach Doug Marrone in Sunday's game and frustration over his usage.During the summer, the Florida State product said his hometown Titans and the Raiders in Las Vegas would be his top two destinations if he were to leave in free agency.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Super Bowl odds update: Pats, Cowboys on the rise
Just two weeks into the NFL season, oddsmakers have already re-evaluated their Super Bowl odds for a number of teams.Adjustments have been made for the nine clubs that have opened the year at 2-0, while odds have plummeted for a slew of teams with injured quarterbacks. Let's dive in.Trending upNew England Patriots (3-1)Opening line: 10-1Any value to be found in the New England Patriots' Super Bowl odds has been sapped after back-to-back dismantlings of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins. Bill Belichick's defense might be the best in the NFL, and that unit is paired with Tom Brady and his plethora of offensive weapons. Can anyone stop the Patriots from repeating? At 3-1, this line might still be too high.Dallas Cowboys (12-1)Opening line: 20-1The Dallas Cowboys have all the makings of a Super Bowl winner, and they've looked the part through two weeks. However, Dallas hasn't faced tough opponents to date - beating the New York Giants and the Washington Redskins - while the hapless Dolphins are on tap in Week 3. We should find out a lot more about the Cowboys soon, as they'll play the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, and Philadelphia Eagles over the next month.Unbeaten teamsSeven other teams remain unbeaten through two weeks. The Kansas City Chiefs are down to 5-1 and are viewed as the Patriots' closest competition. The NFC's shortest odds go to the Los Angeles Rams at 10-1, while the Cowboys and Packers are both hot on their heels at 12-1. Despite their 2-0 start, the Seattle Seahawks have been given odds of 20-1, perhaps due to the quality of their first two opponents. The Baltimore Ravens sit at 20-1 after dipping to 40-1 at some spots before the season. This could be the last chance to hop on their bandwagon. If the Ravens beat the Chiefs this week, expect their number to be cut nearly in half. The biggest risers among the unbeaten teams are the San Francisco 49ers (20-1) and Buffalo Bills (50-1), who've both seen their odds halved since the preseason.Trending downChicago Bears (25-1)Opening line: 12-1If not for Miami, the Chicago Bears would have the worst offense in the NFL through two weeks among teams to only start one quarterback. Mitchell Trubisky has the lowest quarterback rating of anyone who's completed both games for their team. He also has the fewest yards per attempt while ranking bottom three in yards and first-down throws. He didn't attempt a single pass on the Bears' only touchdown drive of the season so far (nine rushes, one penalty). Does that sound like a guy capable of leading his team to a Super Bowl?Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyCarolina Panthers (100-1)Opening line: 40-1It's all about the quarterback. An 0-2 start doesn't help, but Cam Newton has struggled mightily through two weeks and oddsmakers have taken note. Newton has completed just 56.4% of his passes and has yet to throw for a touchdown while being sacked six times. Amplifying concerns, Newton's status is up in the air for Week 3 because of a foot injury. Even with Drew Brees' injury blowing the doors open in the NFC South, the Carolina Panthers still aren't getting any love.Injured quarterbacksThere's a massive difference between ineffective quarterback play and injuries, but the two situations have a similar effect on Super Bowl odds. A season-ending elbow injury for Ben Roethlisberger has seen the Pittsburgh Steelers' line plummet from 14-1 to 200-1, while a six-week absence for Brees has pushed the Saints from 8-1 to 20-1. But if the Saints can stay competitive through Brees' absence - which they should - and still claim the NFC South crown, there's excellent value in grabbing them now at 20-1.The New York Jets have moved from unlikely underdogs (100-1) to massive long shots (300-1) after losing Sam Darnold for at least a month (as well as backup Trevor Siemian for the season). The Jacksonville Jaguars are on a similar trajectory, having seen their odds fall a long way from 30-1 to 200-1 when Nick Foles was placed on injured reserve.Alex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. Jets' Siemian to miss rest of season with ankle injury
New York Jets head coach Adam Gase announced Tuesday that quarterback Trevor Siemian will miss the rest of the season due to an ankle injury suffered on Monday Night Football versus the Cleveland Browns, according to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.Siemian will require surgery to repair ligament damage but doesn't have any broken bones, Gase said. The 27-year-old started Week 2 in place of Sam Darnold, who's battling mono. Siemian lasted three passes before going down.Third-stringer Luke Falk will take over starting duties with Siemian unavailable while the Jets will look to acquire another pivot to back him up.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Panthers GM: Newton aggravated foot injury, Week 3 status unclear
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was held out of practice on Tuesday after aggravating the foot that he sprained during the preseason, general manager Marty Hurney told Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.Hurney added that Newton has no timeline for a recovery and that he's considered day-to-day for now."We will see how it goes," Hurney said.Kyle Allen, an undrafted quarterback in his second year, would likely start against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 if Newton can't play, according to Rodrigue. Allen played well in an inconsequential Week 17 win last year, putting up 266 yards and three total touchdowns. Third-round rookie QB Will Grier is also on the Panthers' roster.Newton has missed time due to injury in two of the past three seasons after leading Carolina to a Super Bowl berth in 2015, when he was also named NFL MVP.The former Heisman Trophy winner has tossed the third-most interceptions (44) in the league since that Super Bowl loss. This year, Newton has yet to throw a touchdown pass for the 0-2 Panthers.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Week 3 survivor picks
To quote the indelible Ariana Grande: "Thank u, next."The Baltimore Ravens sent us into Week 3 in rather comfortable fashion, but wins by the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Kansas City Chiefs mean most people in your pool are likely feeling comfortable as well. The 2019 season still awaits its first big upset. Favorites of five or more this season are 13-2 straight up, with the Carolina Panthers (-6.5 in Week 2) and Cleveland Browns (-5.5 in Week 1) the only ones to lose outright. Ten teams are favorites of five or more points this week, however, and it could be time for the other shoe to drop. Here's a guide to avoiding that shoe.Safest pick: Dallas CowboysThe Dallas Cowboys are 21-point favorites in Week 3, and even that doesn't seem like enough. Dak Prescott has seven touchdowns through two weeks for the 2-0 Cowboys, who won by an average margin of 14 points over a pair of divisional opponents - traditionally much closer games. The Miami Dolphins, the Cowboys' opponents Sunday, are 0-2 and lost those two games at home by an average margin of 46 points. Now they hit the road for the first time under rookie head coach Brian Flores and will face a Super Bowl favorite without their best defensive player, having just traded Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In NFL history, there have been 10 favorites of at least 20 points in NFL history, and none of them lost the game straight up. After this week, that sample will be 12, with the New England Patriots favored by 21.5 over the New York Jets. So why not pick the Pats? The Jets have a couple of playmakers who at least make you somewhat nervous in Le'Veon Bell and Robby Anderson - at least more nervous than Kalen Ballage and Preston Williams. It's also a divisional game in Foxboro, and anyone who's been following this column knows I strongly recommend avoiding those. When there's an alternative as appealing as Dallas, don't get cute.If you're feeling lucky: NFC North over AFC WestThis is for people who picked the Cowboys to beat the Giants in Week 1 and the Patriots over the Dolphins in Week 2. If either one of those teams remains at your disposal, stop reading and go submit your pick.Last weekend, the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions beat the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers, respectively. In Week 3, the Green Bay Packers host the Broncos and the Minnesota Vikings welcome the Oakland Raiders to the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Expect the NFC North to triumph over the AFC West again.Aaron Rodgers over Joe Flacco requires little explanation, especially since the Broncos have to fly across the country for an early start on the heels of a demoralizing loss. These aren't Mike McCarthy's Packers, either. Under that regime, the Packers occasionally didn't show up, leaving them prone to upsets. For the first time in years, they have a very strong defense to pair with their elite quarterback. Green Bay is a much more well-rounded team than the one that came to rely wholly on the brilliance of Rodgers to win. Flacco might not eclipse 150 passing yards against this secondary. The Vikings also feel like a safe pick, as they typically dominate inferior opponents under Mike Zimmer. Since he took charge, the Vikings are 26-5 straight up as home favorites and 13-1 as favorites of six or more. Look for them to take out their frustrations on the Raiders after a tough loss at Lambeau Field.Adam Bettcher / Getty Images Sport / GettyAvoid: Kansas City ChiefsPatrick Mahomes has been dynamite at home, but why even go down this road? With so much chalk on the board this week, there are much safer underdogs to bet against than the Baltimore Ravens. There's no doubt that "Money" Mahomes can sling it, and the Ravens' secondary is prone to giving up big plays. The Kansas City Chiefs are 12-0 straight up with Mahomes as a home favorite of at least four points. Still, this isn't a great matchup for them. Baltimore can run the ball like few other teams. The Ravens will look to control the clock and keep their offense on the field, which means Mahomes will be rooted to the bench. As incredible as he is, he can't score from there. In just his fourth career start, Lamar Jackson took the Chiefs to overtime at Arrowhead Stadium last season. Don't put yourself through that kind of stress.HOME (SPREAD)AWAYWINNER (SAFETY RANKING)Dallas (-21)MiamiDAL (9.5)New England (-21.5)NY JetsNE (9)Green Bay (-8)DenverGB (8)Minnesota (-8)OaklandMIN (8)Buffalo (-6)CincinnatiBUF (7)Kansas City (-7)BaltimoreKC (7)Philadelphia (-7)DetroitPHI (6)San Francisco (-7)PittsburghSF (4)Tampa Bay (-6.5)NY GiantsTB (4)Indianapolis (-2.5)AtlantaIND (3)LA Chargers (-3)HoustonLAC (3)Seattle (-5)New OrleansSEA (3)Jacksonville (+1)TennesseeTEN (2)Arizona (+3)CarolinaARI (1)Cleveland (+3)LA RamsLAR (1)Washington (+4.5)ChicagoWAS (1)Safety rankings are out of 10, based on author's picksAlex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. 2020 vision: Dolphins GM vows 'very aggressive' offseason
The Miami Dolphins will look to turn a boatload of cap space and three first-round picks in the upcoming draft into a competitive roster by 2020."We'll be very aggressive," general manager Chris Grier told reporters Tuesday. "We're not gonna sit here on a bunch of money or anything. The plan is to build a winner here."The Dolphins are off to an 0-2 start in 2019 - having been outscored 102-10 - while a number of veteran players have reportedly been crafting exit strategies from the fish tank since the beginning of the season. The futility was to be expected after Grier and Co. spent the summer shredding the roster to commence a full-scale rebuild. The latest marquee player to depart South Beach was defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, who was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a deal that netted Miami its third first-round selection in the 2020 draft."No one likes losing, and we've talked about building a team that's gonna win and compete for championships for a long time instead of being this (contender) one year and then you fall back for two, three," Grier said.Miami is projected to have approximately $120 million in cap space this offseason. The Dolphins will also have two draft picks in the second round, giving them an opportunity to accelerate their rebuild."We've positioned ourselves to where we think the organization will be in a good place here shortly," Grier added. "Like I said, we'll be aggressive in free agency. Again, we're not gonna sit back and not do anything. We're gonna be very proactive and try to get this turned quickly."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Daniel Jones' road from anonymous high schooler to Giants starting QB
Editor's note: This profile of Giants QB Daniel Jones ran as a part of theScore's pre-draft coverage in April.Four years ago, the high school recruiting profiles on senior quarterback Daniel Jones didn't offer much in the way of hype.At that time, 247Sports ranked Jones as the 2,020th-best player in the 2015 class. The quarterback's composite rating, which combines the opinions of major recruiting services, listed him with no stars and an "NA" ranking. Rivals.com didn't even have a photo to go with Jones' profile. He was, for this purpose, as anonymous as the old Twitter eggs. But now, after starting for three years at Duke while throwing for 8,201 yards, Jones is expected to be selected in the first round of this week's NFL draft - perhaps as high as sixth by the New York Giants. He's a clear member of the first tier of quarterback prospects. The others - Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins and Drew Lock, - were all four- or five-star recruits coming out of high school. An unfortunate confluence of events contributed to Jones' anonymity back then, but he'll be a known commodity in Nashville on Thursday night."Guys are going to receive him very, very well in whichever locker room he goes into," said Zac Roper, Duke's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.Late bloomerFormer varsity football coach Larry McNulty first met Jones when the quarterback was a sixth grader. His first impression?"He was skinny as a rail, and I mean really skinny," McNulty said. "He continued to be skinny until his junior year in high school. But he was always athletic, he was always extremely competitive."McNulty, who has since retired, coached Jones on the varsity team at Charlotte Latin. He and his staff had already nicknamed the young pivot "Swag" after watching him enter a junior varsity game and carry the team to two touchdowns.Icon Sportswire / Getty ImagesBut despite his swagger, Jones was just 5-foot-11 and about 150 pounds when he became the starting varsity quarterback as a sophomore - nowhere near the NFL-ready 6-foot-5, 220-pound body he has now."I'm telling you, he took some tremendous hits," McNulty said. "He got blindsided by some guys that were like 250."The fact Jones was a late bloomer - he grew to 6-foot-3 by his senior year at Charlotte Latin - was just one obstacle stopping him from capturing the attention of major college football programs.Another? As a junior, he fractured his wrist playing basketball. He spent that spring - one of the most important periods for high school football recruits - with his right forearm in a cast, unable to throw at college camps."He did not take that cast off until mid-July," McNulty recalled. "The only thing that was left at that time was he did a little swing up through New England and into the (Ivy League schools). I was really, really worried that he was going to overdo it. That he was going to go up there and throw and throw and hurt himself and not be available for us in the fall. But he got through it all, came back fine and had a really good senior year and was being looked at by the Ivies."Jones went on to throw for 43 touchdowns while running for 10 more as a senior, but still appeared headed for a decision between Harvard and Princeton. However McNulty, in a last-ditch attempt, put in a call to Duke coach David Cutcliffe, asking him to take one more look at Jones' senior film."He said, 'Do not connect this kid with anybody else. I will call him tonight,'" McNulty recalled of that conversation with Cutcliffe.Mark Brown / Getty ImagesWithout any scholarships available, Cutcliffe offered Jones the opportunity to come in as a "grayshirt" - which meant he'd pay his own way during his first semester until a scholarship spot opened.Jones accepted the offer, which gave him a chance to play for Cutcliffe, who had previously coached both Peyton and Eli Manning in college.Quick learnerDuke's Roper remembers hearing the stories during Jones' redshirt season in 2016. As the quarterback of the scout team, Jones gave Duke's starting defense fits during practice.Meanwhile, it had never been the plan for Jones to see the field that season. However, returning starter Thomas Sirk suffered a year-ending Achilles injury in the preseason, opening the door.Soon after, in the fourth game of his college career, a 19-year-old Jones led Duke into Notre Dame Stadium and defeated the Fighting Irish 38-35. He completed 75 percent of his passes (24 of 32) for 290 yards and three touchdowns. It was then that Roper knew Jones was special."It's a big thing for anyone to do, much less a redshirt freshman," he said.Jones ended his college career with a similarly impressive effort in the Independence Bowl against Temple. He elected to play in the game despite injury concerns, and threw for 423 yards and five touchdowns, both career highs. The Blue Devils won 56-27."He was not 100 percent going into that game, did everything that he could to be as close to 100 percent in preparation for that game," Roper said. "Actually gets banged up a little early in that game. In an era where you see a lot of guys not play in bowl games for a variety of reasons, he was not going to be a guy that was not going to lay it on the line for his teammates."That toughness is among the reasons Roper believes Jones should be one of the first quarterbacks selected at the NFL draft. As for the others, Roper cited Jones' arm talent, accuracy, and intelligence."He's very cerebral, which can hurt plays at times, but it doesn't lock him up," Roper said."So he's not only intelligent, he's very football intelligent. Sometimes those things don't always go hand in hand. Sometimes the more intelligent a guy is, the more he tries to think too much and doesn't try to play with instinct. He can do both. He can still play off instinct and he can stay a step ahead of you or two just from an Xs and Os standpoint."On a conference call last week, NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah explained why he thinks Jones would fit well with the Giants - who are looking to build around their defense - as the potential sixth overall pick in Thursday's first round."I just know when you watch Jones play and the things he does, I think he can play an efficient game," Jeremiah said. "I think you'll see that with the Giants."If Jones does go in the top 10, he'll be the first Duke player selected that high since linebacker Mike Junkin went fifth overall in 1987. No Blue Devil quarterback has ever been taken in the first round. So much for anonymity.Mark Cooper (@mark_cooperjr) is theScore's NCAA writer.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Giants bench Manning, name Daniel Jones starting QB
The Daniel Jones era officially began Tuesday in New York as the Giants named the rookie their starting quarterback over Eli Manning for Week 3.The decision follows a less-than-ideal 0-2 start for the Giants; they've been outscored 63-31 despite putting up 420 yards per game. Jones, the sixth overall pick out of Duke, will take the G-Men's reins for Sunday's matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Head coach Pat Shurmur said he informed Manning of the change earlier Tuesday morning. Shurmur praised the Giants' all-time leader in passing yards, touchdowns, and completions."I have said it since I got here: I am very fond of Eli - his work ethic, his preparation, his football intelligence," Shurmur said, according to Michael Eisen of the team's website. The coach added, "This move is more about Daniel moving forward than about Eli."Jones didn't have eye-popping numbers in college, but "Danny Dimes" sparkled in the 2019 preseason, throwing for 416 yards, a pair of touchdowns, and no turnovers while sporting an 85.3 completion percentage and a 137.2 passer rating.Manning owns a 116-116 career record. He's defeated Tom Brady on the biggest stage twice, both times earning Super Bowl MVP honors.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Steelers acquire Minkah Fitzpatrick from Dolphins for 1st-round pick
The Pittsburgh Steelers have traded a 2020 first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for disgruntled safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Steelers are also giving up a fifth-round selection in 2020 and a sixth-rounder in 2021, while getting the Dolphins' fourth-round pick in 2020 and a seventh-rounder in 2021.Fitzpatrick, the 11th overall pick of the 2018 draft, had grown unhappy with his usage in the Dolphins' defense. The team allowed the defensive back to seek a trade."We are very excited to add Minkah to our defense," Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said Tuesday in a release. "We had him rated very high during the 2018 NFL Draft process and we thought that he could be an impact player in this league."The rebuilding Dolphins are focusing on the future and now hold three first-round picks in the 2020 draft. Miami acquired the Houston Texans' first-rounder in an August trade that sent star left tackle Laremy Tunsil and receiver Kenny Stills packing.Meanwhile, the Steelers get a 22-year-old star who can play safety, linebacker, or slot corner. Fitzpatrick is signed through 2021 on his four-year, $16.4-million rookie deal, and he's also eligible for a fifth-year option. The first-round pick that Pittsburgh sent to Miami could end up being valuable, as the Steelers have started this year 0-2 and lost quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to a season-ending injury.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Meet the 4 backup QBs thrust into starting jobs
It's time to get acquainted with some new quarterbacks.Four of the NFL's 32 starting pivots - that's one-eighth, for all you mathematicians out there - have gone down in the first two weeks of the 2019 season.TeamQBInjuryTimetableSaintsDrew BreesThumb6 weeksJaguarsNick FolesClavicle9 weeksJetsSam DarnoldMononucleosis3-7 weeksSteelersBen RoethlisbergerElbowOut for seasonEach of their replacements has a claim to fame.Teddy Bridgewater - SaintsA former first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings, Bridgewater is no stranger to the limelight. He appeared to be on the upswing when a devastating knee injury days before the 2016 opener altered his career. A torn ACL and additional damage cost Bridgewater that entire season and most of 2017.The 26-year-old signed with the Jets in 2018 but was shipped to the Saints for a mid-round pick on the heels of a strong preseason. He was immediately billed as the potential heir to Brees. In New Orleans, he quickly earned the affection of his teammates and became a locker room star, popularizing the "Bike Life" dance following wins, as the Saints pedaled to a 13-3 record.
5 teams that should trade for Jalen Ramsey
The latest bombshell during an already eventful NFL season came on Monday night when reports of Jalen Ramsey requesting a trade out of Jacksonville surfaced. The reported asking price of a first-round pick and more shouldn't be scaring away draft-focused teams. Ramsey, who's a two-time Pro Bowler and still just 24 years old, is arguably the league's No. 1 cornerback. Here's are five teams that could, and should, immediately be on the phone with Tom Coughlin and Co. to take advantage of the rare opportunity to land such a talent.PatriotsThe rich get richer. And richer.New England is all-in on another Super Bowl run after adding Antonio Brown just prior to the 2019 season. That came mere months after the Patriots reportedly offered a first-round pick to the Steelers for the star receiver, but they were rebuffed because Pittsburgh didn't want to deal him to an AFC rival. So don't be surprised if Bill Belichick again floats a first-round pick, and more, to bring in a generational cover man who would give the defending champs the top cornerback tandem in football when lined up opposite Stephon Gilmore. The 2019 Patriots already feel eerily similar to the team that went undefeated in 2007. Adding Ramsey would ensure the club is prepared for the biggest obstacle, a Patrick Mahomes-led offense in Kansas City, that stands between New England and another championship.ChiefsSpeaking of the Chiefs, don't expect the AFC's other juggernaut to sit idle and not explore this opportunity.Andy Reid and the rest of the organization know that, with Mahomes still on his rookie contract and a phenomenal group of playmakers around him, this is the time to strike. If you're running a team likely to be picking at the end of the first round, using that pick to reel in an All-Pro cornerback shouldn't even make you blink.Like the moves to acquire Tyrann Mathieu and Frank Clark in the offseason - two other top young talents - Ramsey would be a major addition that can help a once-dreadful Chiefs defense support the high-flying unit on the other side, both now and for years to come.BrownsYou'd be hard-pressed to find an executive working the phones harder than Browns general manager John Dorsey.Since the calendar turned to 2019, the dealmaker has acquired Olivier Vernon, Odell Beckham Jr., and Eric Murray through trades, Sheldon Richardson in free agency, and rookie Greedy Williams after moving up during the second round of the draft. The message is clear: The Browns want to win now.Cleveland possesses the talent to do that, but its secondary is still relying primarily on youngsters. Denzel Ward, the team's 2018 first-round pick, and Williams currently man the Browns' starting corner spots. If the Browns are serious about contending, they could use an experienced and proven difference-maker to lock down the opposition's top receiver while Vernon, Myles Garrett, Larry Ogunjobi, and Richardson wreak havoc up front. The Browns are done stockpiling draft picks, and they're now in a position to deal those assets to contend.RaidersTypically, players seeking trades are linked to contenders. The Raiders certainly aren't contending, but acquiring a young talent of Ramsey's caliber at a premium position makes this situation different. And so does the Jon Gruden factor.Oakland holds an extra first-round pick in the 2020 draft following the Khalil Mack trade, and you can bet Gruden will be licking his chops at the prospect of using that selection to acquire a stud cornerback in his prime, especially after Mahomes lit up the Raiders' secondary in Week 2.Making this fit more interesting is the fact Ramsey recently identified the Raiders as a team he'd like to join if he moved on from the Jaguars, citing an interest in playing in Las Vegas. It's fair to wonder if the Raiders might be gun shy after the Antonio Brown trade blew up in their faces. But come on, this is Jon Gruden we're talking about. Knock on wood if you're with us.PackersGreen Bay's typical modus operandi is to develop through the draft. But that was under the previous regime. These new-age Packers spend money, as evidenced by their free-agency spending spree on defenders Za'Darius Smith, Preston Smith, and Adrian Amos. The Pack shouldn't stop there. Already 2-0 after division wins over the Bears and Vikings, Green Bay could put its rivals further in the rearview by acquiring Ramsey, a 2017 All-Pro who could put the team over the top.The Packers are currently relying on Jaire Alexander and Kevin King at cornerback, their first picks of the past two drafts. The former is a budding star, while the latter has disappointed.Seeking to pair Ramsey with Alexander for the foreseeable future, Green Bay could offer a package that includes King and their likely mid-to-late first-round pick in 2020.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jets turn to Luke Falk after Siemian's scary ankle injury
The New York Jets are down another quarterback.Trevor Siemian suffered an apparent ankle injury during the second quarter of Monday's game against the Cleveland Browns. The injury occurred as he was being taken to the ground.Third-stringer Luke Falk took over at quarterback. Starter Sam Darnold is out with mononucleosis.Falk was the Tennessee Titans' sixth-round selection in the 2018 draft. He had yet to attempt a regular-season pass before entering Monday's contest. The 24-year-old completed 80% of his attempts while throwing two touchdown passes and zero interceptions in the preseason.Siemian completed just three of his six attempts for three yards before exiting.Jets head coach Adam Gase told ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters the team's emergency quarterback is running back Le'Veon Bell.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Odds for Patriots' perfect season, Dolphins' winless campaign
A week ago, it seemed silly to wonder if the New England Patriots could go 16-0 this season, or if the Miami Dolphins could go 0-16. Then they played each other, and oddsmakers reacted to the beatdown by taking bets on whether a perfect (or imperfect) campaign will come to fruition. After Sunday's 43-0 win at Miami, the Patriots have outscored their opponents 76-3 through the first two weeks of the season and are showing shades of their 16-0 run from 2007. They're 10-1 to finish undefeated and 1-20 to lose at least one game. The Dolphins - the only other franchise with a perfect regular-season record in NFL history - are a mere 7-2 to pull off a winless 0-16 record and 2-9 to win at least a single contest. They've been outscored 102-10 in their first two games, accruing the NFL's fewest yards for while allowing the most yards against.Beautifully, the two sides meet again in New England in Week 17 with immortality on the line. Could that game cap off a 16-0 or 0-16 season? Perhaps both? More pressingly, are such feats worth betting on?BETYESNOPatriots to go 16-010-11-20Dolphins to go 0-167-22-9New England PatriotsHas it happened before? The 2007 Patriots are the only team to ever go 16-0, running through the NFL like no team ever has - especially in the betting market. From 1989-2018, a road team was favored by more than 15 points on just 11 occasions, and that list is littered with all-time great squads. The '07 Patriots did it three times.New England was a 19-point road favorite last week and covered easily - the first sign this year's group might have a shot. The 2019 Pats also boast a better defense than that '07 squad and the record-breaking teams of the early 2010s.Who stands in the way?The Patriots' schedule is smooth sailing through the first eight weeks, as they exclusively face non-playoff teams from 2018. Then, it gets murky:
Browns' Njoku out with concussion after landing on head vs. Jets
Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku has been ruled out for the remainder of Monday night's game against the New York Jets after a scary fall in the first quarter.Njoku skied for a high pass from Baker Mayfield and was undercut by a defender. He landed on his head and was taken to the locker room to undergo concussion testing.
OBJ wears $2M watch during warmups ahead of MNF vs. Jets
Watchgate is upon us. Or something. With all eyes on Odell Beckham Jr.'s wrists ahead of Monday night's game against the New York Jets, the Cleveland Browns' star receiver delivered in the form of some more expensive jewelry.Beckham wore a Richard Mille watch worth $190,000 during last week's season opener. This week's all-white timepiece (matching the Browns' road uniforms) looked to be quite a bit more expensive. According to Master Tesfatsion of Bleacher Report, it might have been a rare Richard Mille model priced at more than $2 million.
Fantasy: Waiver Wire - Week 3
Every Monday during the season, theScore's Justin Boone runs down the recommended waiver wire pickups.Ownership percentages are based on Yahoo leagues. FAAB bids are set off a $100 budget. Only players owned in less than 60 percent of leagues are considered.QuarterbacksJim McIsaac / Getty Images Sport / GettyJosh Allen, BillsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. CIN40%$3Allen played a much more sound game from start to finish in Week 2, leading the Bills to their second straight win over a New York team. Though he's thrown just two touchdowns, he's also rushed for a pair of scores, and it's the rushing production that makes him a borderline starting option in fantasy. Allen is the QB12 on the season and should keep that up at home against a Bengals team that's given up five passing touchdowns already.Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. PIT48%$1Three of those five passing scores the Bengals have allowed came this past week from the arm of Garoppolo, as Kyle Shanahan did an excellent job of scheming his receivers open. Jimmy G will have a shot to post another three-touchdown day at home versus a Steelers defense that's permitted at least 300 yards and three TDs to both quarterbacks it's faced in 2019.Other options: Matthew Stafford at PHI (35% owned), Mitch Trubisky at WAS (53% owned), Jacoby Brissett vs. ATL (12% owned), Teddy Bridgewater at SEA (1% owned)Running backsAndy Lyons / Getty Images Sport / GettyRaheem Mostert, 49ersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. PIT18%$14As we wait to see the extent of the injuries in the Steelers' and Chiefs' backfields, Mostert headlines the list of running backs available on most waiver wires. In his first game with Tevin Coleman sidelined, Mostert went off for 83 rushing yards, 63 receiving yards, and a touchdown while sharing time with Matt Breida (132 yards from scrimmage) and Jeff Wilson (34 yards, two TDs). It's another testament to Shanahan's offense that the team generates yards no matter who's lined up at running back. With Coleman not expected back for at least a month, Mostert will continue to operate as an explosive change-of-pace weapon in tandem with Breida and can slide into your lineup as a flex play. Wilson (0% owned) warrants consideration as a deep-league stash.Jaylen Samuels, SteelersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat SF35%$9Early reports indicate that James Conner likely avoided anything serious with the knee injury that forced him from Sunday's contest. Whether that means he'll be available for Week 3 remains to be seen, so Samuels should be owned everywhere in case he's thrust into the starting lineup. Samuels was given at least 15 touches in each outing from Week 14 to Week 16 last season and averaged 16.9 PPR fantasy points per game during that stretch. Even with Mason Rudolph under center, Samuels would offer RB2 upside if Conner can't suit up.Darwin Thompson, ChiefsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. BAL18%$9Damien Williams and LeSean McCoy exited early Sunday with knee and ankle injuries, respectively. Neither ailment is believed to be major but McCoy will get an MRI to be sure. Consider this your warning shot to make sure Thompson is on your roster. Williams has never handled more than 73 touches in a season and the 31-year-old McCoy is at the opposite end of the spectrum as he approaches 3,000 career touches. Thompson's time is coming.Carlos Hyde, TexansNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat LAC43%$9Hyde hasn't found the end zone since arriving in Houston, which might be the only reason fantasy managers aren't getting excited about his usage. The veteran has run the ball 30 times over the Texans' first two games, posting 83 yards in Week 1 and 90 yards during a 20-carry afternoon in Week 2. This is awful news for Duke Johnson's fantasy value and makes Hyde worth consideration as an RB3/flex in one of the league's most dangerous offenses.Peyton Barber, BuccaneersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat NYG47%$5Barber continues to split with touches with Ronald Jones and Dare Ogunbowale, but he re-established himself as the back to own in Tampa in Week 2 when he played on 65% of the Bucs' snaps. He turned that into 89 yards from scrimmage and a score. However, that isn't something to get used to with Barber, but rather should be viewed more as an example of his fantasy ceiling. In a favorable matchup with the Giants, Barber is decent one-week play.Other options: Frank Gore vs. CIN (8% owned), Alexander Mattison vs. OAK (22% owned), Chris Thompson vs. CHI (48% owned), Justin Jackson vs. HOU (33% owned), Ito Smith at IND (19% owned), Rex Burkhead vs. NYJ (14% owned), Justice Hill at KC (23% owned), Tony Pollard vs. MIA (22% owned), Jalen Richard at MIN (14% owned), Chase Edmonds vs. CAR (3% owned), Ryquell Armstead vs. TEN (1% owned)Wide receiversIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyTerry McLaurin, RedskinsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. CHI51%$29McLaurin followed up his five-catch, 125-yard, one-touchdown breakout debut with five catches, 62 yards, and a score against the Cowboys. What we're witnessing is a star arriving in the NFL and, somehow, he's still being undervalued. Seeing the field on over 90% of Washington's plays, the rookie is poised to be a fantasy difference-maker all season as a top-36 wideout. When the Redskins eventually turn to Dwayne Haskins - McLaurin's college teammate - it will only benefit the young receiver.DK Metcalf, SeahawksNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. NO49%$19Both McLaurin and Metcalf were part of the Week 2 waiver wire column and yet they are still up for grabs in around half of fantasy leagues. Metcalf is a big-play machine and the Seahawks have put him to work early with lines of 4-89-0 and 3-61-1 in his first two contests. Down weeks will happen in Seattle's ground-heavy attack, but Metcalf deserves to be in fantasy lineups as an upside WR4/flex option.MeCole Hardman/Demarcus Robinson, ChiefsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. OAK40%/7%$19/$14On the latest episode of theScore Fantasy Football Podcast, I simplified my approach with Chiefs players to this: you want to own really anyone who plays alongside Patrick Mahomes. After Sammy Watkins dominated in the opener, it was Robinson and Hardman doing the bulk of the damage in Week 2. Robinson tallied 172 yards and two touchdowns, while Hardman had the best day of his young career with 61 yards and a score. In fact, Hardman's numbers would have been much bigger if his 72-yard catch wasn't nullified by a penalty. Both players carry massive upside and should be in your lineup as long as Tyreek Hill remains sidelined.Nelson Agholor, EaglesNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. DET15%$7Alshon Jeffery is dealing with a calf strain and DeSean Jackson underwent an MRI on Monday. Both players are worth dart throws to see if this production is here to stay, but the sophomore Chark is the better bet as he leads the team in almost every receiving category, including air yards.Deebo Samuel/Marquise Goodwin, 49ersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. PIT14%/20%$5/$5With Dante Pettis completely squandering his opportunity to be the 49ers' No. 1 receiver, Samuel and Goodwin have emerged as the most productive wideouts on the depth chart. The first is Donte Moncrief's ongoing struggles as the team's No. 2 receiver, a role that likely won't be his for much longer. The second is Rudolph taking over as Pittsburgh's starting quarterback in the wake of Ben Roethlisberger's season-ending injury. Not only are Rudolph and Washington college teammates, but the duo also showed excellent chemistry in the preseason, resulting in some monster performances for the receiver, who's a speculative add this week.Other options: Randall Cobb vs. MIA (24% owned), Golden Tate returns from suspension Week 5 (35% owned), AJ Brown at JAX (23% owned), Cole Beasley vs. CIN (6% owned), Keke Coutee at LAC (29% owned), Geronimo Allison vs. DEN (32% owned), Preston Williams at DAL (2% owned), Parris Campbell vs. ATL (5% owned),Tight endsJustin Berl / Getty Images Sport / GettyWill Dissly, SeahawksNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. NO3%$1Tight end is ugly outside of the top options, so let's hope you've already found your weekly starter. Brown denies new sexual misconduct claim against him
Antonio Brown's attorney, Darren Heitner, took to Twitter on Monday to state his client's denial of new sexual misconduct claims made against him.In a report from Robert Klemko of Sports Illustrated, an artist claimed Brown invited her to his Pennsylvania home in 2017 to paint a mural of him.During her second day on the job, she "was in a kneeling position while painting and turned to find Brown behind her, naked, holding a small hand towel over his genitals."Through his attorney, Brown denied engaging in such activities.
Report: Eagles' Jeffery has calf strain, status in doubt for next 2 games
Philadelphia Eagles receiver Alshon Jeffery exited Sunday night's game against the Atlanta Falcons with a calf strain which has put his status in doubt for the team's next two contests, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Eagles play two games in the next 10 days, with a battle against the Detroit Lions on Sunday preceding a Thursday night meeting with the Green Bay Packers in Week 4.Jeffery left Sunday's game without recording a reception. Jalen Ramsey's agent requests trade from Jaguars
Jalen Ramsey's agent has asked the Jacksonville Jaguars to trade his client following Sunday's loss to the Houston Texans, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen.Ramsey's agent, David Mulugheta, confirmed the trade request to Schefter. The Jaguars have spoken with interested teams but there is currently no plan to deal the two-time Pro Bowler, Schefter and Mortensen report. Jacksonville is seeking at least one first-round pick and is demanding more in any potential trade, sources told Schefter.Trade rumors have followed Ramsey since the Jaguars' disappointing 2018 season. During Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, Ramsey got into a heated verbal dispute with head coach Doug Marrone.Ramsey's trade request stems from that confrontation and his frustration with his usage in the 0-2 Jaguars' defense, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The 24-year-old is widely considered the best corner in football and has been seeking a new contract reflecting that status; he even arrived at this year's training camp in a money truck. The team, however, has not budged.Playing in the final year of his rookie deal, Ramsey will earn $13 million for the 2020 season after the Jaguars exercised the fifth-year option on his contract. Report: James Conner day-to-day with knee issue
Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner is considered day-to-day after suffering a knee injury Sunday, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.Conner managed 14 touches for 45 scrimmage yards and a touchdown before leaving the Steelers' eventual 28-26 loss to the Seattle Seahawks early with the knee issue. The Pitt alum said on his radio show Monday that his knee has no tears or significant issues, according to 93.7 The Fan's Jeff Hathhorn, and Conner added that he was confident he'd play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.Conner burst onto the scene last season during Le'Veon Bell's holdout and produced a Pro Bowl 2018 campaign in which he put up 1,470 yards from scrimmage to go along with 13 trips to paydirt. The hometown kid has not been able to find the same success in 2019, managing just 54 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries through two weeks. Roethlisberger intends to honor 3 years left on Steelers contract
You have not seen the last of Ben Roethlisberger.Though the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback has been ruled out for the rest of the 2019 season due to an elbow injury that requires surgery, the 37-year-old doesn't plan to retire. Instead, he'll play out the remainder of his contract."The Steelers committed three years to me this offseason and I fully intend to honor my contract and reward them with championship-level play," Roethlisberger said in a statement released on Monday.Big Ben signed a two-year, $68-million extension in April that will keep him with Pittsburgh through the 2021 season. For now, 2018 third-round draft pick Mason Rudolph will lead the Steelers' offense. But Roethlisberger hopes to return to his starting job after recovering from his injury."I will do all I can to support Mason and the team this season to help win games. Reich says Vinatieri will remain Colts' kicker: 'There's no guy I trust more'
Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich said Monday that Adam Vinatieri will remain the team's kicker for Week 3 and beyond, as relayed by The Athletic's Zak Keefer."Adam (Vinatieri) is our kicker. ... Just want to make that clear," Reich said during a conference call with reporters, according to ESPN's Mike Wells. The vote of confidence came amid reports that the 46-year-old Vinatieri was considering hanging up his cleats for good after a recent spell of struggles; the Colts planned to talk the kicker out of retiring before he made a final decision Monday, a source told ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio."There's no guy I trust more than Adam Vinatieri," Reich said, according to Keefer, adding that he'd hoped his team's Week 2 win over the Tennessee Titans would come down to a 60-yard field goal.Vinatieri, who missed two extra-point attempts against Tennessee, has been off the mark on five kicks through two weeks this season. He missed two field-goal tries and an extra-point attempt in Indy's opener. The three-time first-team All Pro's struggles date back to last season, as he missed his only field-goal attempt and a PAT in the Colts' divisional-round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.Asked if the team would work out other kickers, Reich said that would be GM Chris Ballard's decision to make, according to Joel A.
