Aaron Rodgers is giving back to California high schools impacted by the 2018 wildfires in the state. The Green Bay Packers quarterback donated 375 football helmets to Chico High School, Paradise High School, and his alma mater, Pleasant Valley High School, according to WBAY. The helmets are all VICIS Zero1, which has been the top-ranked model in NFL safety testing for the past three years."I have been the head coach now for eight years and not one time have I ever had to ask Aaron for anything," Pleasant Valley coach Mark Cooley said."He calls or texts every year and says, 'Coach, here is what I would like to do this year, is that OK?' He does so much for our school and community that most people have no idea regarding the contributions he has made! He never asks for recognition. I think it is important that everyone knows what a positive impact he is having on the lives of our student-athletes."Rodgers previously donated $1 million to help with wildfire recovery efforts.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Cam Newton will be a go for the Carolina Panthers' Week 1 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams, as the quarterback wasn't listed on the team's injury report Wednesday.Newton sprained his foot while being tackled during the Panthers' Week 3 preseason game, but claimed he's feeling as fresh as ever heading into the 2019 season."I feel like a rookie again," he told reporters, according to NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman. "I'm having fun, feeling good and the thrill is still there, man. I'm blessed, just knowing that, man, you just got to sometimes put things into perspective."Just two or three weeks, two or three days ago, grown men cried, you know what I'm saying? People getting unexpectedly cut, released, traded or whatever. I'm just lucky to be a part of a fan base and organization for the same nine years. A lot of people can't say the same."The former NFL MVP was back at practice following his injury scare and insisted his ankle and shoulder - which he underwent offseason surgery for - won't hold him back."I'm focused on the Rams," Newton said. "I don't want to dwell on something that's irrelevant or what doesn't need to be talked about. Excited about the matchup on Sunday. Really looking forward to playing four quarters of football."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

T.Y. Hilton isn't letting Andrew Luck's surprise retirement temper his expectations for the 2019 campaign."This is the best team I've ever been a part of," he said Thursday, according to Stephen Holder of The Athletic. The Indianapolis Colts were pegged as Super Bowl contenders with Luck at the helm. Though few are still on the hype train following the quarterback's exit, Hilton was quick to point out that the team still possesses talent at multiple other positions."(Luck) is a great guy and (I) take nothing away from (him), but this team is good," the star receiver said, via ESPN's Mike Wells."I've been on good teams, I've been on not so good teams," he continued. "But this team, especially, we have pretty much everything you need to have on the field."Jacoby Brissett will take over for Luck as the Colts' starting signal-caller. General manager Chris Ballard expressed confidence in Brissett to lead the team, calling him a "winning football player" while signing him to a two-year contract extension.Hilton failed to produce up to his standards in 2017 when Luck battled a shoulder injury. The wideout's 57 catches and 966 receiving yards were the second-lowest totals of his career. His four touchdowns were his lowest.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. After signing his record-breaking deal on Thursday, Ezekiel Elliott is happy to rejoin the Dallas Cowboys and put his lengthy holdout behind him."Just excited to be home," Elliott told Lindsay Draper of the team's website. "Excited for my team and my family. I'm excited for this next chapter."Elliott inked a six-year, $90-million extension with Dallas, making him the NFL's highest-paid running back. The 24-year-old praised his teammates and the Cowboys' front office for supporting him."(Being away from the team was) super tough, it was really hard. Super hard," he said, according to NFL.com's Grant Gordon. "Honestly, what helped me get through was the support of the guys in this building, just communicating with them every day. Them just supporting me and that meant a lot."We're a close-knit group. It all goes way farther than football. We actually love each other. We're a family. We understand each other and we just have a great respect for each other."The star tailback also addressed Jerry Jones' controversial comments from last month. The Cowboys owner replied "Zeke who?" when asked about Tony Pollard's stellar preseason, and the rookie's ability to fill the void at running back if Elliott's holdout continued. Elliott and his camp reportedly found Jones' comments disrespectful during negotiations."That's so far behind us," the two-time Pro Bowler said. "I mean we signed the deal, so I mean there's literally no point talking about that."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

New York Jets running back Le'Veon Bell said earlier this offseason that he would carry the ball 500 times if that's what the team needed. The three-time All-Pro doubled down on that proclamation on Wednesday when discussing the Jets' Week 1 contest against the Buffalo Bills."I could carry 50 times if they ask me to. I've been waiting a long time for this moment," Bell said, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.The 27-year-old's comments came on the heels of Jets head coach Adam Gase's press conference earlier Wednesday, during which he said Bell told him not to "hold back" when it comes to his workload, according to Al Iannazzone of Newsday.Gase was reportedly strongly opposed to the five-year, $52.5-million deal that New York gave to Bell in the offseason, but he's since changed his tune."No. Not close," the head coach said Wednesday when asked if he's ever worked with a running back as talented as Bell is, according to Iannazzone.Bell hasn't played in an NFL game in 608 days but is no stranger to carrying a heavy load, as he led the league with 406 touches during his last full campaign in 2017.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. If Week 1 between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears is anything like last year's opener, bettors might not make it to the second slate of games. It's been roughly one year since quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Packers scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to beat their rivals on the first Sunday Night Football game of the season, and the 2019 campaign opens on Thursday with the two NFC North powerhouses. Here's everything you need to know about the game from a betting perspective.Line movementThe Bears opened as 3.5-point favorites in April, with a total of 46. Chicago, a popular bet in the futures market this offseason, peaked at -4 over the summer but came down to a steady -3 during the final week of August. That's where the Bears currently are, with the total ticking up a half-point to 46.5.Betting breakdownFollowing a 3-3 start to the 2018 season in Year 1 under head coach Matt Nagy, the Bears quickly became a treasure trove for bettors: Chicago finished the season 9-2, both outright and against the spread.Green Bay has owned the rivalry of late, however, as it's won eight of the last nine contests played at Soldier Field. Rodgers went into last season at 27-17-1 against the spread in prime-time games but proceeded to go 0-4-1 in five situations in 2018.The Packers had a couple of notable players limited in practice earlier this week, as cornerback Kevin King and tight end Jimmy Graham are probable with respective injuries; rookie tight end Jace Sternberger was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with an ankle injury. For Chicago, tight end Trey Burton and defensive lineman Bilal Nichols were both limited earlier in the week. The former, one of quarterback Mitch Trubisky's favorite targets last season, is a game-time decision.Important trendsHeading into the opener, the situation historically favors the road team.Teams coming off six or fewer wins and being given points on the road in Week 1 have covered the spread roughly 66% of the time. The Packers, who finished 6-9-1 in 2018, fit this angle.Player propsGeronimo Allison Over 45.5 receiving yardsAllison will be the primary slot receiver in Green Bay, bookended by Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Allison's matchup is particularly intriguing considering the Bears have to replace some underrated production at nickelback with the departure of Bryce Callahan, who was a Pro Football Focus darling last season. The undrafted wide receiver might not be a household name yet, but with more reps in an offense led by Rodgers, that notoriety could come sooner rather than later. Don't be surprised if this is one of the lower receiving yard totals for Allison this season.PickThese are two boom-or-bust teams that could end up on either side of the spectrum by the end of the season, which provides for some serious volatility entering the opener. The spread seems just about right, but the total feels a point or two too low. With Chicago losing its defensive coordinator and having so much turnover success, the Bears are bound for at least some regression. Getting Rodgers on prime time should be a treat, and the "over" is the only play in this situation.Alex Kolodziej is a betting writer for theScore. Ezekiel Elliott has ended his holdout and signed a six-year, $90-million extension with the Dallas Cowboys, the team announced. The contract, which contains $50 million guaranteed, will make Elliott the highest-paid tailback in football. He'll also be tied to Dallas through the 2026 season, as the extension won't kick in until his rookie deal ends following 2020.The two-time rushing champion is expected to begin practicing with the Cowboys on Wednesday as they prepare for their season opener on Sunday versus the New York Giants, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. Dallas is tentatively planning to give Elliott 20-to-25 snaps in Week 1, NFL Network's Jane Slater reported. The 24-year-old flew into Dallas on Tuesday after spending all of training camp and the preseason in Cabo, Mexico, where he had been training throughout his holdout - a signal that an agreement was in sight.Previously, Elliott had demanded an extension that would make him the richest player at his position. Dallas appeared reluctant to comply at first, and the contract battle threatened to get ugly when Elliott's representation responded harshly to the "Zeke who?" joke that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made during the preseason.Ezekiel Elliott's career rushing statsYearYardsTDsAverage20161631155.12017*98374.12018143464.7*Missed six games due to suspensionElliott's return will push rookie Tony Pollard, who'd been getting ready to take over the bell-cow role, down the team's depth chart.Meanwhile, the Cowboys ultimately reset the market for running backs despite previously vowing not to give record deals to any of their contract-needy stars. The Philadelphia Eagles proposed a trade to the Los Angeles Chargers that would have seen running backs Melvin Gordon and Jordan Howard switch teams, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB.Los Angeles declined the offer, which also included the teams switching mid-round draft picks and the Chargers eating salary, Breer added. It's unclear if the Eagles were the team that reportedly had preliminary discussions with the Chargers about a Gordon deal.Gordon appears set to skip the beginning of the regular season while holding out for a new contract. The Chargers, however, told the running back they're done negotiating with him until the end of the 2019 campaign. The Bolts recently gave Gordon, who's entering the fifth and final season of his rookie contract, permission to seek a trade.Meanwhile, Howard was acquired by the Eagles in a trade with the Chicago Bears in March. The former fifth-round pick is entering the final year of his rookie pact as well.Howard rushed for 935 yards and nine touchdowns last season and is expected to lead a backfield in Philly that also includes rookie Miles Sanders and veteran Darren Sproles.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ahead of the NFL's 100th season, theScore ranked the top 100 players in the game today, as voted on by our football editors. Players who are set to miss significant time due to either injury or suspension were not considered.100-76 I 75-51 I 50-26 I 25-11 I 10-1100. Tre'Davious WhiteCB, BillsAfter two years in the league, White has already established himself as one of the game's best corners. He allowed just 30 catches on 52 targets and two touchdowns in a stellar sophomore season.99. Robert WoodsWR, RamsOnce a role player with the Bills, Woods is now part of Los Angeles' main cast. He blew up for 86 catches, 1,219 yards, and six touchdowns in 2018. His previous career highs were 56 receptions and 781 yards.98. Ryan RamczykOT, SaintsPart of the Saints' celebrated 2017 draft class, Ramczyk followed a breakout rookie season by cementing himself as one of the best at his position. In 2018, he allowed just four sacks and helped pave the way for the NFL's No. 6 running game.97. Marshon LattimoreCB, SaintsFrom the same draft class as Ramczyk, Lattimore followed up his Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign with another highly productive season, posting 59 tackles, two interceptions, 12 passes defensed, and four forced fumbles.96. Leighton Vander EschLB, CowboysVander Esch makes this list after leading the Cowboys with 140 tackles in his rookie season, a franchise record for a player in their first year - and good enough for third in the league in tackles.95. Landon CollinsS, RedskinsThe highest-paid safety in the NFL is also one of the league's hardest hitters. Despite a down year, Collins was on pace to again eclipse 100 tackles for the season before his rotator cuff injury.94. Ndamukong SuhDT, BuccaneersStill a force to be reckoned with entering his 10th season, Suh is now something of a hired goon. Playing on a one-year deal, he helped the Rams come within one score of a Super Bowl title.93. Melvin IngramDE, ChargersOne half of the Chargers' feared pass-rushing duo, Ingram took another big step in 2018. No game was more emblematic of his growth than his dominance of the Ravens in the playoffs when he posted seven tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble.92. Baker MayfieldQB, BrownsDiamond Images / Diamond Images / GettyThe heart and soul of the Browns, Mayfield is finally a quarterback Cleveland fans can be proud of. A proven winner, he turned the franchise's fortunes around immediately upon being installed as the starter in Week 3.91. Cameron HeywardDT, SteelersHeyward appears to be getting better with age. The 30-year-old tallied eight sacks in 2018 after setting a career high of 12 the previous season. In the previous six years, he had a combined 25 sacks.90. Kyle FullerCB, BearsChicago excelled last year thanks in large part to a talented secondary led by Fuller, who had an NFL-best seven interceptions and 21 pass deflections in 2018. Since 2017, Fuller has forced 42 incompletions, more than any other corner in the league.89. Jaylon SmithLB, CowboysAlready prominent in coverage, Smith stepped up his run defense in 2018 and totaled 121 tackles with four sacks. The Cowboys sport one of the best linebacker duos in the league with the 24-year-old alongside Leighton Vander Esch.88. Justin HoustonDE, ColtsHouston is still among the best pure pass-rushers in the game. His move to defensive end as part of a young, up-and-coming defense in Indy should help remind the rest of the league of his rare talent.87. Amari CooperWR, CowboysCooper looked like a man reborn after his midseason trade from Oakland to Dallas. If you expand the receiver's production with the Cowboys to 16 games, it works out to an elite 94-catch, 1,289-yard, 11-touchdown campaign.86. Yannick NgakoueDE, JaguarsNgakoue's powerful hands and ability to explode off the line allowed him to lead the league in quarterback hits last year. The 24-year-old is entering the final season of his deal and could get elite pass-rusher money in a new extension.85. JuJu Smith-SchusterWR, SteelersSmith-Schuster is one of only six receivers to catch 100-plus balls in their sophomore season, and of those, only Michael Thomas had a higher catch rate. JuJu was made to fill Antonio Brown's shoes.84. Alex MackC, FalconsMack has missed just 11 games in his 10-year career, and in 2018, the eight-time Pro Bowler allowed only 14 pressures. Whether the game script dictates pass or run, there isn't a more reliable anchor on the line.83. Stefon DiggsWR, VikingsAdam Bettcher / Getty Images Sport / GettyNot only is Diggs one of the best route-runners in the league, but his sturdy hands also accounted for only one drop on his 102 receptions last year. The 25-year-old will be the one to thank in a bounce-back campaign for Kirk Cousins.82. Xavien HowardCB, DolphinsHoward's uncanny ability to read plays and jump routes allowed him to nab a league-leading seven interceptions in 2018. In an offseason full of departures, the Dolphins doubled down on their star and made him the highest-paid corner in the NFL.81. David DeCastroG, SteelersPittsburgh's offensive line has consistently been ranked among the NFL's best - thanks in large part to its stability at right guard. DeCastro, an elite pass blocker, didn't allow a single sack throughout 2018.80. Andrew WhitworthLT, RamsWhitworth showed signs of slowing down late last season, but for the most part, he remained one of the league's most effective blind-side protectors. Though his specialty is pass-blocking, the 37-year-old is also a strong asset in the running game.79. Kawann ShortDT, PanthersShort is coming off a down year rushing the passer, as his three sacks in 2018 marked his lowest total since his rookie year. However, he made his second Pro Bowl thanks to another excellent run-stuffing campaign.78. Jurrell CaseyDT, TitansA run-stopper first and foremost, Casey ranked fifth in tackles for loss among interior linemen. He's almost as good against the pass and has 13 sacks over the last two years.77. Cam NewtonQB, PanthersInjuries have bugged Newton over the last couple of seasons, preventing him from returning to his 2015 league MVP form. Still, he's always difficult to bring to the ground, and he's one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in NFL history.76. Frank ClarkDE, ChiefsClark has upped his game each season that he's been in the league. He recorded a career-high 14 sacks for the Seahawks in 2018 before being traded and signing a five-year, $104-million contract with the Chiefs.100-76 I 75-51 I 50-26 I 25-11 I 10-1Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. One NFL team has been in preliminary talks with the Los Angeles Chargers in an attempt to vet out a potential trade for disgruntled running back Melvin Gordon, a source told ESPN's Josina Anderson. The Chargers are seeking either a 2020 first-round pick, or a 2020 fifth-rounder and 2021 first-round pick for Gordon, according to Anderson. However, a trade for the running back is unlikely to come to fruition, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Los Angeles gave the two-time Pro Bowler permission to seek a trade last week and said they won't re-engage in extension talks until after the season.General manager Tom Telesco said Gordon's only option for suiting up with the Chargers this season is to play under his fifth-year option, which is worth $5.6 million. The Chargers reportedly offered Gordon an extension that would pay him roughly $10 million per season, however, he is apparently seeking a deal worth $13 million annually. The team that acquires Gordon will also likely have to secure a new deal with the former first-round draft pick.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Los Angeles Rams signed quarterback Jared Goff to a four-year extension, the team announced Tuesday. The new deal will reportedly pay the quarterback $134 million and includes an NFL-record $110 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The extension will keep Goff in Los Angeles through the 2024 season.Goff's reported annual average of $33.5 million places him tied for third with Aaron Rodgers among all current quarterback contracts, behind only Russell Wilson and Ben Roethlisberger. The Rams starter's record-setting guaranteed money narrowly surpasses the $107.8 million guaranteed Carson Wentz was given earlier this offseason in his extension. The 24-year-old had two years remaining on his rookie deal that paid him an average annual salary of $7 million. The Rams have gone 24-7 with Goff as the starter over his last two years. In his rookie campaign, the pivot failed to win a game in his seven starts under head coach Jeff Fisher, however, he showed considerable improvement after Sean McVay joined the team in 2017.Goff, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 draft, led Los Angeles to the Super Bowl in 2018. That's because most leagues have already drafted, so if these players are available you likely won't need to spend any FAAB to get them. Despite an up-and-down preseason, Garoppolo tops the quarterback pickups thanks to his matchup against the Buccaneers, a team with a strong passing attack and a weak defense - the perfect recipe for a high-scoring affair. We're still waiting to see if Garoppolo can excel in Kyle Shanahan's system, but he gets a favorable schedule to start the season with the Bucs in Week 1 and Bengals in Week 2.Josh Allen, BillsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat NYJ34%$1If you thought Garoppolo's schedule was easy, Allen faces a pillowy soft opening slate with the Jets, Giants, and Bengals teed up. He'll be playing behind an upgraded offensive line, with new weapons like field-stretcher John Brown (more on him later), slot receiver Cole Beasley, and rookie rusher Devin Singletary surrounding him. The Jets' defense is already dealing with injuries, making Allen a very intriguing Week 1 streamer who offers upside if he can recapture his late-season 2018 fantasy success.Other options: Matthew Stafford at ARI (27% owned), Nick Foles vs. KC (18% owned), Sam Darnold vs. BUF (28% owned)Running backsTodd Olszewski / Getty Images Sport / GettyJustice Hill, RavensNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat MIA28%$14Hill is among the high-quality backup running backs you should be targeting as bench stashes. Ronald Jones has yet to show he was worthy of a 2018 second-round pick, and third-stringer Dare Ogunbowale might pass him on the depth chart. Austin Ekeler is the Chargers' next man up, but Jackson impressed the coaching staff while getting limited touches as a rookie, and he would receive a portion of the early-down carries in Gordon's absence. If Gordon continues sitting out, Jackson will be an Ekeler injury away from starting in one of the league's better offenses.Dion Lewis, TitansNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat CLE46%$1After missing multiple weeks with a calf injury, Derrick Henry appears to be on track to suit up Week 1. Whether the Titans are willing to give him the bulk of the touches right away remains to be seen. With his team 5.5-point underdogs on the road, it's possible Lewis receives more work than expected, both in relief of Henry and as the primary passing-down back.Carlos Hyde, TexansNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat NO33%$1Hyde is on his fifth team in two years, a career journey that could see him watching games from his couch before this season ends. Landing in Houston is the only thing keeping him on the fantasy radar, as his only competition is an unproven Duke Johnson. Though Johnson is far more likely to succeed, Hyde needs to be owned in more leagues until we know how the Texans plan to deploy both backs.Other options: Jaylen Samuels at NE (44% owned), Alexander Mattison vs. ATL (23% owned), Ito Smith at MIN (21% owned), Ty Montgomery vs. BUF (17% owned), Frank Gore at NYJ (15% owned), C.J. The last time we saw Allison, he was averaging five receptions and 72 yards over the first month of the 2018 season while scoring twice. Had he kept up that pace and avoided the injured reserve, Allison would have finished as a top-15 fantasy wideout. You should want him on your roster while we wait to see if he can recreate that 2018 production.John Brown, BillsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidat NYJ47%$7The Jets' injuries make their defense vulnerable. The Allen-Brown connection could surprise people this season, and the pair will get an advantageous matchup to kick things off. Though Brown's production may not be as consistent as fantasy owners would like, his big games will win them over.Anthony Miller, BearsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. GB44%$6Miller hasn't been showered with the same hype as some of the other sophomore receivers, but we're excited to see what he can do when healthy at the NFL level. As a rookie, he scored seven touchdowns while playing with an injured shoulder that eventually required surgery.Tre'Quan Smith, SaintsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. HOU17%$1Another member of the underrated sophomores club, Smith's doubters are likely supporting veteran Ted Ginn, who pushed his young counterpart to the bench in New Orleans when both were healthy last season. That might not be as easy to do this year, and if the preseason is any indication, we could see both players on the field together in three-wide sets.Jamison Crowder, JetsNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. BUF45%$1If you're into volume-dependent slot receivers, Crowder will get a chance to break out while catching passes from Sam Darnold, who's a soon-to-be star quarterback. Beat writers have speculated that Crowder could flirt with 100 receptions, which is hyperbole, but it hints strongly at a significant role in the offense. With Robby Anderson nursing a calf injury, Crowder's targets could increase during the opener.Other options: Tyrell Williams vs. DEN (37% owned), Marquise Goodwin at TB (28% owned), Kenny Stills at NO (26% owned), Albert Wilson vs. BAL (5% owned), DK Metcalf vs. CIN (31% owned), James Washington at NE (37% owned), Miles Boykin at MIA (5% owned), Terry McLaurin at PHI (1% owned), Rishard Higgins (4% owned), Chris Conley vs. KC (1% owned), DJ Chark vs. KC (1% owned), KeeSean Johnson vs. DET (1% owned), Damion Willis at SEA (1% owned)Tight endsDave Reginek / Getty Images Sport / GettyT.J. Those with Trey Burton on their roster would be wise to consider Hockenson as a one-week replacement.Darren Waller, RaidersNext UpOwnershipFAAB bidvs. DEN22%$1"Hard Knocks" has inflated the value of many fantasy assets over the years, but Waller could be an exception. When it comes to point spreads, how valuable is each starting NFL quarterback? Heading into Week 1, Aaron Rodgers tops the list. He's worth 7.5 points to a spread, followed by Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Russell Wilson, who all count seven points toward a betting line. The biggest factors here are the overall talent levels of the starting QB and the same team's backup. As we saw when Andrew Luck suddenly retired, the Indianapolis Colts moved from +3 to +7 in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Luck himself was worth more than four points to the spread, but the Colts had a capable backup in new starter Jacoby Brissett. Here is the complete list of NFL starting quarterbacks and their impact on the point spread.Quarterback Spread ValueAaron Rodgers-7.5Patrick Mahomes-7Tom Brady-7Russell Wilson-7Carson Wentz-6.5Philip Rivers-6.5Drew Brees-6Ben Roethlisberger-5.5Matt Ryan-5.5Jared Goff-5Deshaun Watson4.5Baker Mayfield-4Cam Newton-4Dak Prescott-4Matthew Stafford-3.5Mitchell Trubisky-3.5Kirk Cousins-2.5Jimmy Garoppolo-2.5Nick Foles-2.5Lamar Jackson-2Jacoby Brissett-1.5Jameis Winston-1.5Sam Darnold-1.5Joe Flacco-1Josh Allen-1Derek Carr-1Marcus Mariota-1Kyler Murray-1Andy Dalton0Case Keenum0Ryan Fitzpatrick0Eli Manning+1Notes• It's hard to believe Eli Manning is a two-time Super Bowl champion. Manning is the only quarterback whose team would be a lesser underdog if he weren't under center. Many believe the Giants should waste little time turning to rookie Daniel Jones, and the oddsmakers agree.• It's interesting that Carson Wentz is worth close to a touchdown considering the Eagles won a Super Bowl without him. The difference this year is that Josh McCown came out of retirement to back up Wentz, while the more capable Nick Foles is now in Jacksonville.• Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were the first two players taken in the 2015 draft, but neither quarterback has lived up to expectations. Their impact on the point spread for Week 1 backs that up. Winston is worth 1.5 points, while the Titans' spread would move only a point without Mariota in the lineup. Basically, neither quarterback is much of an upgrade over their backup - at least according to oddsmakers.• Oddsmakers have little regard for Lions QB Matthew Stafford. Stafford is only worth 3.5 points to the spread, which is tied with Bears pivot Mitchell Trubisky. If you're thinking Detroit must have a decent backup, think again. The backup to Stafford is Josh Johnson. It feels like Stafford should be worth more than 3.5 points considering which guy the Lions have behind him.• The Colts just gave Brissett a two-year, $30 million contract extension. They clearly like Brissett more than the betting market. Even with Luck out of the picture, Brissett is only worth 1.5 points to the spread. Oddsmakers see little difference between Brissett and newly signed backup Brian Hoyer.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

There's nothing worse when it comes to survivor pools than being knocked out in Week 3 because you thought Jacksonville should beat Tennessee in a tight contest, and wanted to save Kansas City for later.Picking road winners, testing divisional games, and saving the top teams for future use are surefire ways to see your entry go up in flames. You'd be better off finding a nice charity to donate your money to.With that being said, here's a breakdown of the Week 1 slate:Safest Pick: New Orleans SaintsWeek 1. Monday Night Football. The Big Easy. The Saints have been chomping at the bit since a scandalous missed pass interference call cost them a Super Bowl berth last season, and they're about to issue a statement of intent on national television.Drew Brees and his dynamic offense should feast on a Houston Texans secondary that finished 28th against the pass last season and could be even worse this year. The Saints were 7-1 in 2018-19 against bottom-10 pass defenses. We all remember what Brees did last year in New Orleans on Monday night against a Washington Redskins defense that was top-15 against the pass, right? He piled up 363 yards and three touchdowns. This game could get ugly for Houston if its one-dimensional offense can't keep up. The Texans are 1-13 on the road in the last three seasons against teams that finish with winning records - a category the Saints have lived in since Sean Payton and Brees arrived in 2006. Meanwhile, the Texans have won just two prime-time road games - both at Cincinnati - since Bill O'Brien went to Houston in 2014, and they are 2-5 overall on MNF. Payton and Brees are 17-3 at home in prime time since 2009.Don't overthink it. Take the Saints on Monday night and live to fight another week.If You're Feeling Lucky: Detroit LionsThis pick violates a major rule clearly outlined in the opening: never take a road team. But, as is typical for teams in the NFC North, the Lions have a very difficult schedule this season. There are going to be few opportunities to pick them, and that's why there's a case to be made for going the Motown route Week 1 (now we're breaking two major rules!).Enter, the Arizona Cardinals. Kliff Kingsbury has brought his Air Raid offense to Glendale, and while it should make for some entertaining football, there will be growing pains. There's also the argument that it's a gimmick and has no place in the NFL, but we can let time tell that tale. What we do know is offense generally takes a lot longer to fine-tune than defense does, and this is one of the more difficult systems to learn. First overall pick Kyler Murray is a remarkable athlete, but this unit is going to struggle early in the season. The Cardinals' varsity offensive line faces a terrifying matchup against Detroit's strong defensive front, who will force Zona to be one-dimensional and have Murray running for his life.On the other side of the ball, the Cardinals made no real improvements to the NFL's worst run defense from last season, and their middle-of-the-road pass defense will be without the suspended Patrick Peterson for six weeks. The Lions, on the other hand, were much better during an injury-plagued 2018 season than their record suggested and should be able to march into Glendale and exit with a double-digit win.How frisky are you feeling?Avoid: Seattle SeahawksThe Seahawks have been notorious for getting off to slow starts in the Pete Carroll-Russell Wilson era. They started 0-2 last season, 1-2 in 2017 after barely beating a Brian Hoyer-lead San Francisco 49ers side, and were awfully lucky to beat the Miami Dolphins in 2016 to avoid an 0-2 start, like the one they experienced in 2015.This roster has gotten progressively worse every season, too. Frank Clark, Justin Coleman, and Doug Baldwin are gone, leaving Wilson with only Tyler Lockett to throw to, in front of a bad offensive line. Also, don't so quickly forget that the Cincinnati Bengals started last season with a 4-1 record - which included a Week 1 win over Andrew Luck and the Colts in Indianapolis - before injuries derailed their season. The Marvin Lewis era is over after 16 years, which should result in a renewed sense of optimism under new head coach Zac Taylor. Sit back and root for a Bengals win that would surely see a large chunk of your pool ousted in Week 1.HOMEAWAYSAFETY RANKINGNew OrleansHoustonNO (9)PhiladelphiaWashingtonPHI (7)ArizonaDetroitDET (6)MinnesotaAtlantaMIN (6)MiamiBaltimoreBAL (6)DallasNY GiantsDAL (5)ClevelandTennesseeCLE (5)LA ChargersIndianapolisLAC (5)SeattleCincinnatiSEA (5)LA RamsCarolinaLAR (4)New EnglandPittsburghNE (4)ChicagoGreen BayCHI (3)JacksonvilleKansas CityKC (3)NY JetsBuffaloNYJ (1)Tampa BaySan FranciscoSF (1)OaklandDenverDEN (1)Safety rankings are out of 10, based on author's picksAlex Moretto is a sports betting writer for theScore. The Dallas Cowboys have signed right tackle La'el Collins to a five-year, $50-million extension that includes $35 million guaranteed, sources told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.Collins becomes one of the five highest-paid players at his position, and the deal ties him to Dallas for the next six seasons, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 26-year-old signed with the Cowboys in 2015 as an undrafted free agent. He was projected to be an early-round pick but that changed when police asked to interview him about the death of his ex-girlfriend before the draft.Collins has been a mainstay on the Cowboys' line since his rookie campaign, debuting at guard before switching to tackle in 2017.The LSU product is the second Cowboy to ink a long-term extension before the season, joining linebacker Jaylon Smith. Dallas has four of its five starters on the offensive line - left tackle Tyron Smith, center Travis Frederick, right guard Zack Martin, and Collins - signed through at least 2023.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors.1. New England Patriots Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPost-draft rank: 2The reigning champions rightfully sit in the top spot to start the season. The return of Josh Gordon further solidifies the Patriots' place as the team to beat.2. Kansas City ChiefsPost-draft rank: 5Mahomes' MVP defense kicks off against a stingy Jaguars team. With explosive weapons around the star quarterback and an improved defense, this may finally be the year in Kansas City.3. New Orleans SaintsPost-draft rank: 1After back-to-back heartbreaking playoff ousters, the talent-loaded Saints hope the third time's the charm when it comes to the Lombardi Trophy.4. Los Angeles RamsPost-draft rank: 3Sean McVay's squad must endure a brutal early-season schedule (Panthers, Saints, then Browns), but the Rams have the talent and experience to repeat as NFC champions.5. Philadelphia EaglesMitchell Leff / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 6The Eagles might have the NFL's most loaded roster. Carson Wentz returning to MVP form would push them from Super Bowl contender to Super Bowl favorite.6. Chicago BearsPost-draft rank: 7You know a team is good when its biggest question mark is at kicker. Unfortunately for the Bears, the kicking game is a vital part of today's NFL.7. Los Angeles ChargersPost-draft rank: 4The Chargers aren't exactly entering the 2019 campaign on a high note. A sidelined left tackle, an injured star safety, and a holdout running back will test Los Angeles' depth early.8. Dallas CowboysPost-draft rank: 13Even with Ezekiel Elliott's holdout possibly stretching into the regular season, the Cowboys are among the most talented teams in the NFC. With their star running back sidelined, though, it's hard to imagine Dallas keeping pace with the conference's top offenses.9. Atlanta FalconsPost-draft rank: 16With the injury-riddled defense back to full health, the Dirty Birds are well-positioned to re-emerge as title contenders.10. Minnesota VikingsJonathan Bachman / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 12Year 2 of the Kirk Cousins megadeal needs to end with a trip to the postseason or heads will roll in Minnesota.11. Cleveland BrownsPost-draft rank: 9The darlings of the offseason look to take the next step and rise above .500 in the regular season. The world will be watching, as the Browns play three prime-time games in the first five weeks.12. Houston TexansPost-draft rank: 14Adding Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Stills makes the Texans better in 2019, even though the cost of the acquisitions and the head-scratching Jadeveon Clowney deal could haunt them in the near future.13. Seattle SeahawksPost-draft rank: 10Kudos to John Schneider and Pete Carroll, who filled their club's biggest need with a young star and gave up peanuts in return. Clowney will make his Seahawks debut against a vulnerable Bengals offensive line.14. Baltimore RavensPost-draft rank: 15Lamar Jackson has had enough time to learn the new offense. The Ravens' fortunes in 2019 rest on his ability to be as dangerous as a passer as he is as a runner.15. Green Bay PackersDylan Buell / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 11We won't have to wait long to see the new-look Packers offense. Thursday's season opener will reveal whether Aaron Rodgers is still changing plays in the huddle.16. Pittsburgh SteelersPost-draft rank: 17It's all kumbaya in the Steelers' locker room now and they'll be motivated to prove wrong those who believe the Browns have already won the division.17. Carolina PanthersPost-draft rank: 18The Panthers started 6-2 last year before Cam Newton's shoulder injury derailed their season. If Newton can stay healthy, Carolina could be a playoff team - but that's a big if at this point.18. Indianapolis ColtsPost-draft rank: 8Jacoby Brissett is, of course, a significant downgrade from Andrew Luck. While the Colts' depth chart has plenty of talent, overcoming the shock loss of the star quarterback is a tall order.19. New York JetsPost-draft rank: 24If Sam Darnold can manage the kind of second-year leap that other quarterbacks have made in recent years, the Jets could be a sleeper for a wild-card spot.20. Tennessee TitansNuccio DiNuzzo / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 19The Titans are neither good enough to contend nor bad enough to bottom out. Expect a fourth straight season around .500 - to the delight of former head coach Jeff Fisher.21. Detroit LionsPost-draft rank: 22External expectations are low for Detroit, where Matt Patricia continues to shape the roster in his image, but the head coach could find himself on the hot seat in just his second year at the helm.22. Buffalo BillsPost-draft rank: 25The Bills went undefeated in the preseason for the first time ever. What does it mean? Probably nothing. But with a wild card under center and an intimidating defense, Buffalo will be no pushover.23. Jacksonville JaguarsPost-draft rank: 21Doug Marrone is on thin ice and could be the first head coach fired if the Jaguars stumble out of the gate.24. San Francisco 49ersPost-draft rank: 20Jimmy G looked awful this summer, then impressed, then struggled again, then looked strong. Who knows what the 49ers will get come Week 1.25. Denver BroncosDustin Bradford / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 28The Joe Flacco era in Denver begins with a divisional matchup against the Raiders. Given the Broncos' injuries and a lack of talent on offense, we're tempering expectations.26. Washington RedskinsPost-draft rank: 23The Redskins picked Case Keenum over rookie Dwayne Haskins. It's an understandable decision for Jay Gruden given his precarious position, but the head coach might regret not going big when he's sent home permanently.27. Arizona CardinalsPost-draft rank: 27The Kliff and Kyler show is up and running in the desert. While the duo may end up worthy of the hype, the No. 1 overall pick and the offense as a whole failed to impress in preseason action.28. Oakland RaidersPost-draft rank: 26All eyes are on Antonio Brown in the season opener. How are his feet? Is he committed? What will life in a new helmet be like? Stay tuned.29. Cincinnati BengalsPost-draft rank: 31The Bengals are primed to challenge the Dolphins for rights to the first pick in the 2020 draft.30. Tampa Bay BuccaneersWill Vragovic / Getty Images Sport / GettyPost-draft rank: 29The good news is that the Bucs have been tweeting out videos of their beleaguered secondary intercepting passes throughout training camp. The bad news is that Jameis Winston was throwing them.31. New York GiantsPost-draft rank: 30We shouldn't anoint Daniel Jones just yet, but based on his outstanding preseason performances, the rookie quarterback is taking Eli Manning's job sooner rather than later.32. Miami DolphinsPost-draft rank: 32Pray for Ryan Fitzpatrick (and, eventually, Josh Rosen) after trading Laremy Tunsil left Miami with easily the worst offensive line in football. Yet it's hard to argue against the Dolphins' tactic of tanking as hard as possible.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Indianapolis Colts and quarterback Jacoby Brissett have agreed to a two-year, $30-million deal, which includes $20 million guaranteed at signing, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Colts, who confirmed an extension was signed, anointed Brissett their starting quarterback after Andrew Luck's shocking retirement in August.Brissett was entering the fourth year of his rookie deal. The new agreement is not an extension, but a straight two-year contract that keeps the quarterback with the Colts through the 2020 season, according to ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio.Indianapolis acquired the 26-year-old from the New England Patriots days before the 2017 season. Brissett was soon named the team's starter with Luck nursing a shoulder injury and went on to throw for 3,098 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Colts went 4-12 that season. The former third-round pick will have big shoes to fill under center, as Indianapolis is coming off a 10-6 season and a divisional round appearance with Luck at the helm.General manager Chris Ballard threw his complete faith into Brissett after the team tabbed him as the starter, calling him a "winning football player in this league" who's loved in Indianapolis' locker room. The Colts signed Brian Hoyer on Monday to be their No. 2 quarterback.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden is preparing for Trent Williams' absence heading into Week 1.Gruden was less than optimistic when asked if he expected the star left tackle to return to the team before Washington's season opener Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles."I have no expectation whatsoever anymore," Gruden said, according to ESPN's John Keim. "I'm kind of numb to the fact, so I'm going to coach the guys we have. That's all we can do right now and ... to your answer, no, I don't have any feeling whatsoever."Williams has yet to speak publicly about his time away from the team. It's unknown whether his grievance stems from how the Redskins handled a recent medical situation of his, or if it's regarding his desire for a new contract.Redskins president Bruce Allen denied rumors that the organization was shopping Williams and said he believes the seven-time Pro Bowler will play for the team in 2019.Washington signed two offensive linemen this offseason in Donald Penn and Ereck Flowers. The Indianapolis Colts found their No. 2 quarterback.Brian Hoyer inked a deal with Indianapolis to back up Jacoby Brissett, the team announced Monday. The veteran signed a three-year, $12-million pact, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The contract includes $9 million in guaranteed money, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. In the wake of Andrew Luck's shock retirement, the Colts only had Brissett, Chad Kelly, and Phillip Walker on the roster.Kelly impressed in the preseason but is suspended for the first two games and Walker was moved to the practice squad as part of the cutdown to 53 players, so Indy was in desperate need of an experienced option behind its new starter.Hoyer was recently released by the New England Patriots after two seasons, his second stint serving as Tom Brady's backup. The 33-year-old also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, and San Francisco 49ers over a 10-year career.Hoyer has made 36 starts since 2013.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Running back Melvin Gordon reportedly doesn't intend to report to the Los Angeles Chargers for Week 1 as he attempts to work out a trade away from the AFC West club, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The Chargers gave the holdout permission to seek a trade and said they won't re-engage in extension talks with the veteran runner until after the season. Gordon has one year remaining on his rookie contract.General manager Tom Telesco said Gordon's only option for suiting up with the Chargers this season is to play under his fifth-year option, which is worth $5.605 million. In order to hit free agency in 2020, Gordon must eventually report to the team to accrue a year of service. His contract will toll if he sits out the entire campaign, meaning Los Angeles would retain his rights for another season. The Chargers reportedly want Gordon to sign an extension worth around $10 million per season, while the two-time Pro Bowler apparently is aiming for $13 million annually.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The New England Patriots are placing first-round receiver N'Keal Harry on injured reserve due to an ankle injury that the rookie's been battling all summer, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Harry will be forced to miss at least eight weeks but is reportedly expected to return at some point this season. In a corresponding move, the Patriots re-signed Demaryius Thomas to a one-year deal after releasing him as part of the cut to 53 players, Schefter also reported, citing a source.Thomas will likely compete with Phillip Dorsett for the No. 3 receiver role behind Julian Edelman and Josh Gordon. The veteran wideout impressed in the final preseason game as he continues to work back to full health after suffering a torn Achilles in December. Brian Flores insisted Sunday the Miami Dolphins aren't tanking and only traded standout left tackle Laremy Tunsil because they received an offer that blew them away."Was something we couldn't turn down," the rookie head coach said, according to Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post.Tunsil was one of two high-profile players shipped to the Houston Texans, joining wide receiver Kenny Stills. The lineman was, arguably, the Dolphins' best offensive player and was due for a sizable extension at some point over the next two years. But when the Texans offered two first-round picks and a second-rounder as part of a trade package for the two, Miami pulled the trigger."You guys saw the compensation," Flores said. "(Tunsil) was part of that. He's a very good player. I like him. But at the end of the day, we just felt this was the best move for us. You've got to make tough decisions when you're sitting in this seat."Despite shedding a great deal of talent throughout the offseason, Flores was adamant that the Dolphins aren't trying to plummet for a top pick in the 2020 draft."This game means a lot to me. I wouldn't disrespect the game with that," he said, according to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. "We're not. We're going to try to win every game."We're going come out, work hard, we're going to fight," he continued. "We're going to play hard and try to win every game. That's what you do. This team is motivated. We've got some talented players. We're going to go out there and try to win every game."Flores added that Stills' inclusion in the trade had nothing to do with the political stance he took against Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.Flores also noted that he, Ross, and general manager Chris Grier are "all on the same page" regarding the Dolphins' direction.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The New York Giants are reportedly set to trade linebacker B.J. Goodson to the Green Bay Packers after initially deciding to waive the veteran, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The compensation for Goodson has yet to be reported.Goodson, a fourth-round pick in 2016, started 13 games for New York last season and racked up 60 total tackles and two interceptions. However, Goodson spent most of the summer working with the backup defense behind starters Alec Ogletree and Tae Davis. The Giants added to their linebacker depth in the draft, taking Ryan Connelly in the fifth round.Free-agent linebacker David Mayo, who was drafted by Giants general manager David Gettleman when the executive was with the Carolina Panthers, took Goodson's spot on the roster.Meanwhile, Goodson will bolster the Packers' injury-hit linebacker group. Blake Martinez is locked into one of the starting jobs, but his presumed running mate, Oren Burks, suffered a torn pectoral muscle and could be headed for injured reserve. The inexperienced duo of James Crawford and Ty Summers rounds out Green Bay's depth.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. With the first week of the regular season looming, the Dallas Cowboys and Ezekiel Elliott appear no closer to a new contract. The Cowboys are reportedly frustrated by Sunday afternoon's negotiations with their holdout running back because Elliott's side was less willing to compromise than they expected, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports. While talks continued later Sunday, an extension isn't close, a source told Jane Slater of NFL Network.Asked what was holding up a deal, Slater's source said "everything," echoing the same message from a month ago.Earlier Sunday, Robinson reported the two sides were honing in on an agreement.Dallas reportedly offered to make Elliott the second-highest-paid running back behind Todd Gurley. However, the two-time rushing leader apparently wants to beat Gurley's annual average of $14.38 million. While both parties were reportedly aiming to finalize a new deal over the weekend, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday that he was prepared for Elliott to miss games.Dallas opens the season at home Sunday against the New York Giants.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Teams are like people: they all have flaws. Here's the greatest red flag facing each team entering the 2019 season.AFC | NFCNFC NorthChicago Bears: KickerThe Bears' kicking game remains unsettled in what's been one of the NFL's most highly scrutinized positional situations. Only Eddy Pineiro remains on Chicago's roster after the team had, at one point, eight kickers competing in training camp. However, Pineiro didn't exactly inspire confidence in Matt Nagy and Co. after shanking an extra-point attempt in the team's final preseason contest, though he also hit on all three of his field-goal attempts. Regardless, the Bears' kicking situation will likely continue to be up in the air through Week 1 and could impact the results of a game or two.Detroit Lions: LinebackerMatt Patricia's defense features plenty of talent in the secondary and along the defensive line, but linebacker remains its weakest spot. An already thin unit took a hit when Jarrad Davis was lost for an extended period of time with an ankle injury. Second-round rookie Jahlani Tavai will see snaps in Davis' absence but lacks the experience required for a full-time role. Veterans Christian Jones and Devon Kennard, the team's other starters, struggle in coverage, allowing opponents to exploit matchups with running backs and tight ends.Green Bay Packers: Roster depth The Packers find themselves in contention for the NFC North crown under new head coach Matt LaFleur, but they may run into trouble if they're hit with the injury bug. This is especially true on offense, where there's little proven depth at skill positions behind Aaron Jones, Davante Adams, and Geronimo Allison. All wide receivers behind Adams and Allison have a combined 40 career receptions. On defense, Green Bay will be sweating if Kenny Clark or Dean Lowry go down on the defensive line, and the team is already being tested at linebacker with Oren Burks expected to miss time. Depth issues aren't the worst concerns to have, but they could present a tall task for the Packers toward the end of the year.Minnesota Vikings: Offensive line General manager Rick Spielman did his best to improve Minnesota's blocking unit, but it's still a glaring weakness entering 2019. First-round pick Garrett Bradbury will upgrade the center position, moving Pat Elflein to left guard. At tackle, Riley Reiff struggled as a run blocker last year, while Brian O'Neill is still nursing an arm injury. Any starts Rashod Hill makes at right tackle likely won't end positively for Kirk Cousins. The line should be better in opening up running lanes for Dalvin Cook, but we simply didn't see enough changes from a unit that led the NFL in pressures allowed a season ago.NFC WestArizona Cardinals: Cornerback The Cardinals have major holes to fill in their secondary as Week 1 approaches. No. 1 cornerback Patrick Peterson will miss the first six games due to his suspension, while Robert Alford is out indefinitely after fracturing his leg. Peterson's absence will particularly hurt Vance Joseph's defense, as the veteran often shadows opponents' top receivers. Arizona is set to start journeyman Tramaine Brock and second-round rookie Byron Murphy at cornerback to begin the 2019 campaign. A pass defense that surprisingly ranked fourth a year ago should see a notable regression.Los Angeles Rams: Todd Gurley's kneeGurley and head coach Sean McVay insist the star running back is healthy entering 2019, but it's difficult to envision him at full strength for an entire campaign. The tailback's knee flared up late last year and appeared to impact his level of play during the Rams' Super Bowl run. Los Angeles even drafted Darrell Henderson in the third round this past April as potential insurance. One thing is certain - McVay's offense isn't the same without its catalyst. Gurley led the NFL in rushing touchdowns in each of the last two seasons, compiling 40 total scores in that span. His health will be under a microscope as the Rams aim to repeat as NFC champions.San Francisco 49ers: Jimmy GaroppoloThe 49ers' $137-million man is entering a make-or-break year. Garoppolo's first full season as a starting quarterback didn't go according to plan, as he tore his ACL in Week 3. Though he's fully recovered from the injury, the former New England Patriot was inconsistent in training camp and during preseason action. He'll need to be sharp in order for San Francisco is to make the playoffs for the first time since 2013. "Jimmy G" is talented, but he's yet to display an ability to lead his team for a long stretch. Seventy-four million dollars guaranteed is a hefty price to pay for a passer with 10 career starts.Seattle Seahawks: Pass-catching optionsIt appears Russell Wilson won't have many players to target in the Seahawks' season opener. The team's receiving corps has been hit with the injury bug, leaving a handful of pass-catchers out for a variety of reasons.PlayerInjuryDK Metcalf (WR)Knee (day-to-day)David Moore (WR)Broken arm (week-to-week)Will Dissly (TE)Knee (day-to-day)Ed Dickson (TE)Knee (4-5 weeks)Former third-round pick Nick Vannett figures to see plenty of snaps at tight end, while virtually unknown Malik Turner and rookies Gary Jennings and John Ursua sit behind Tyler Lockett on the depth chart.Wilson must rely on Lockett early and often. The duo is among the league's best, but Seattle's offense might find itself in trouble if opponents shut down the Seahawks' top wideout.NFC EastDallas Cowboys: Ezekiel Elliott's contractAlthough Elliot and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones are reportedly close to bridging the gap in their ongoing contract dispute, the star rusher's absence will loom over the team until he puts pen to paper.Dallas needs Elliott on the field. Dak Prescott and his offense are much more efficient with Elliott providing a threat out of the backfield. Zeke certainly deserves a raise, but he still has two years remaining on his contract and is putting the Cowboys in an uncomfortable situation. Breaking the bank for a running back could directly impact the team's ability to sign other stars to long-term deals. This is an ugly situation any way you look at it.New York Giants: Loyalty to Eli ManningUnfortunately for Giants and NFL fans alike, the Daniel Jones hype train has ended for the time being. New York took plenty of flack for selecting Jones No. 6 overall in April, but the Duke product silenced his critics this summer. The rookie's success makes Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmur's decision to continuously stick with Manning all the more puzzling. Clearly over the hill, Manning's presence will likely hold the Giants' offense and Jones' development back for most, if not all, of 2019. The sooner New York turns to the future, the better.Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz's durabilityBlessed with all the talent in the world, Wentz is looking to play a full 16-game campaign for the first time since his rookie year. The Eagles' franchise pivot ended each of the last two seasons on the bench with ACL and back injuries but appears healthy and ready to return to his 2017 form. However, Wentz can be reckless, leaving him more vulnerable to big hits than most quarterbacks. The Eagles have Super Bowl aspirations in 2019, but, unlike 2017, won't get there without their star quarterback.Washington Redskins: Left side of offensive lineTrent Williams doesn't appear set to end his holdout anytime soon, leaving a major red flag on Washington's offensive line. Veteran Donald Penn will start at left tackle and protect Case Keenum's blind side while Williams is away from the team. There are worse options, but Penn is 36 and coming off a season-ending groin injury. Former Giants first-round bust Ereck Flowers is penciled in at left guard for the time being, rounding out a mediocre left side. It's likely for the best that Dwayne Haskins isn't being immediately thrown into the fire.NFC SouthAtlanta Falcons: Offensive line Many believe the Falcons will rebound after an injury-riddled 2018, but Matt Ryan will need his offensive line to improve for that to occur. Left tackle Jake Matthews and center Alex Mack are stout blockers but there are plenty of questions surrounding the other three spots. Rookie first-rounder Chris Lindstrom will start at right guard, though the Boston College product has yet to stand out in camp. Meanwhile, Jamon Brown is locked in at left guard, though he was among the league's worst interior pass protectors in 2018. Either Ty Sambrailo or rookie Kaleb McGary will man the right tackle position in Week 1. McGary will start eventually, but he missed most of the preseason after undergoing a heart procedure. Two rookies on any blocking unit is certainly less than ideal for a veteran pivot.Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton's healthFew players' health are as linked to their team's success than Newton's and the Panthers. Already recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, the former MVP sprained his foot during preseason action. Head coach Ron Rivera is optimistic his signal-caller will be a full-go for Week 1, but it's fair to question whether he'll be playing at 100% to start the season. A tweaked throwing motion and hampered lower body have us concerned. Carolina fields a talented roster but must have Newton healthy and at his best in order to compete for the Lombardi Trophy.New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees' arm strengthThe Saints are among the league's most talented squads, but Brees' arm strength, or lack thereof, may be their undoing. Though the future Hall of Famer remains deadly accurate, his arm strength and overall level of play faded toward the end of the 2018 campaign. He averaged 8.9 yards per attempt from Week 1-11, but that number dropped to 6.6 from Week 12 onward. The veteran's air yards per attempt dropped from 10.2 to 6.37 in that same span, according to Pro Football Reference. In addition, Brees was accurate on 55.3% of his deep passes prior to Week 13 and 41.7% afterward. Now 40 years old, it's worth speculating whether Brees' struggles were an anomaly or the beginning of a downward trend.Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Pass rushThe Bucs have multiple weaknesses, but none perhaps greater than their pass rush. Tampa Bay's pass defense ranked 27th and 32nd over the last two seasons, and the team's inability to pressure opposing quarterbacks played a big role. Shaq Barrett, Carl Nassib, and rookie Anthony Nelson will receive the lion's share of snaps on the edge after Noah Spence was cut and with Jason Pierre-Paul set to miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season. However, Barrett and Nassib have combined for just 16.5 sacks since 2017, while Nelson is a fourth-round pick. Bruce Arians' stop unit must keep pace with his offense in order for the Bucs to succeed. Due to a lacking pass rush, we won't hold our breath.MORE: AFC TEAMSCopyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Before trading for Jadeveon Clowney, the Seattle Seahawks reportedly promised the edge defender that they wouldn't use the franchise tag on him following the season, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.Clowney was tagged by the Texans after the 2018 campaign, which marked the beginning of the end of his time in Houston. Franchise tag rules prevent him from signing an extension with Seattle during the season, so he'll have a chance to hit the open market in March. The Seahawks agreed Saturday to acquire Clowney for a third-round pick and linebackers Barkevious Mingo and Jacob Martin. Seattle will pay the 26-year-old a $7-million signing bonus, while Houston will dole out his remaining $8-million salary, according to Schefter.Clowney will join forces with Ezekiel Ansah to form what could be a potent edge rush in Seattle. Clowney is coming off a nine-sack season, while Ansah is one year removed from a 12-sack campaign. He's looking to bounce back from an injury-riddled 2018.Other pass-rushers on track to become free agents in 2020 include Yannick Ngakoue, Dante Fowler, and Whitney Mercilus.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Carolina Panthers reportedly released veteran wide receiver Torrey Smith, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.Smith spent one season with the Panthers, catching 17 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns over 11 games. The 30-year-old was known as one of the NFL's premier deep threats earlier in his career and was a starter on the Baltimore Ravens' championship team in 2012.Smith accepted a pay cut in May, and it appeared at the time that his roster spot would be safe heading into the new season.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Miami Dolphins continued their overhaul Sunday, trading linebacker Kiko Alonso to the New Orleans Saints, the team announced Sunday.Miami receives linebacker Vince Biegel in return.Alonso had apparently requested to be dealt after spending the last three seasons in Miami. The 29-year-old was considered a candidate to be traded or cut for most of the offseason. He racked up 125 tackles, three forced fumbles, and three interceptions last year but was set to see his role diminish in 2019 with Jerome Baker and Raekwon McMillan playing larger roles.Meanwhile, the Saints add a productive veteran to a linebacking corps that already features Demario Davis, Alex Anzalone, and A.J. Klein.Biegel was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 2017 draft. He appeared in 14 games last year for the Saints, primarily playing on special teams.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Seattle Seahawks reportedly have a deal in place to acquire Pro Bowl edge defender Jadeveon Clowney from the Houston Texans, sources told Jay Glazer of FOX Sports. In return, the Texans will receive a third-round pick and linebackers Barkevious Mingo and Jacob Martin, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The trade cannot be finalized until Clowney signs his franchise tender and the players involved pass physicals.Clowney reportedly favored a move to the Seahawks or Philadelphia Eagles over the Miami Dolphins, who were thought to be close to landing him. He reportedly avoided the Dolphins by threatening to delay signing his franchise tag and then leaving as a free agent after the season. The No. 1 pick in 2014 posted 47 tackles and nine sacks last year en route to his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection. He's racked up 18.5 sacks over the last two years. Despite the production, the Texans never appeared close to giving Clowney the lucrative long-term deal he sought. In Seattle, Clowney will bolster a pass rush that lost Frank Clark in the offseason - the sack artist was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Seahawks responded by drafting L.J. Collier in the first round and signing Ezekiel Ansah in free agency. The Seahawks won't be able to sign Clowney to an extension during the season, as the deadline for franchised players to ink multi-year deals previously passed.Clowney is also planning to rehire agent Bus Cook, whom he recently fired, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco announced that the team will cut off contract negotiations with running back Melvin Gordon until the end of the 2019 season, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic."With the regular season now here, we have informed his representatives that discussions regarding contract extensions will be postponed until the conclusion of this season," Telesco said, per Gilbert Manzano of the Orange County Register. "So when or if Melvin reports, he'll play this season on his current contract."Barring a trade, the Chargers insist the tailback can now either play and earn $5.605 million under his fifth-year option or not be paid, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network notes.Gordon has been away from the Chargers throughout the summer in hopes of earning a substantial raise. His holdout is expected to continue into the regular season.Los Angeles appears to be planning for life after Gordon, as the team recently granted the disgruntled star and his camp permission to seek a trade. The 26-year-old reportedly rejected an offer earlier this offseason that would have netted him $10 million annually, as he's seeking roughly $13 million per season.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Former New York Jets third-round pick Jachai Polite will sign a practice squad deal with the Seattle Seahawks after clearing waivers, a source told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. The Jets selected the pass-rusher 68th overall in April's NFL draft, but he failed to make their 53-man roster.Polite was billed as a first-round talent leading up to the draft but plummeted down the board following one of the most disastrous combines in recent memory. At the Indianapolis event, the Florida product admitted he had never watched tape of himself. He also suffered from fitness issues and injured his hamstring at his pro day. It's highly unusual for players drafted in the first three rounds to get cut before the ensuing season.Polite had 11 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss in his junior year at Florida.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Miami Dolphins have traded left tackle Laremy Tunsil, receiver Kenny Stills, a 2020 fourth-round draft pick, and a 2021 sixth-round selection to the Houston Texans, the team announced Sunday. In return, the Dolphins will receive the Texans' 2020 first-round pick, their first- and second-rounders in 2021, defensive back Johnson Bademosi, and offensive lineman Julie'n Davenport.Tunsil was initially rumored to be a trade candidate for Jadeveon Clowney, who Houston traded earlier Saturday to the Seattle Seahawks. The 25-year-old tackle is a massive upgrade for a Texans offensive line that allowed quarterback Deshaun Watson to be sacked an NFL-high 62 times last year.Tunsil, selected No. 13 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, is under contract for the next two seasons and will earn $2.15 million in 2019 and $10.35 million in 2020. The Texans didn't work out a long-term deal with Tunsil prior to the trade, but they're expected to get an agreement done soon, according to Rapoport.Houston's addition of Stills adds depth to its receiving corps, which is led by DeAndre Hopkins, the oft-injured Will Fuller, and Keke Coutee, who's questionable for Week 1 with an ankle injury.Stills was recently at odds with Dolphins head coach Brian Flores after he took issue with Jay-Z and Roc Nation's NFL partnership. Flores retaliated by playing the rapper's music throughout a practice session last week. Stills and Flores insisted there were no hard feelings between the two.The Dolphins, who are currently undergoing a rebuild, now have plenty of draft capital. The team holds four first-rounders, four second-rounders, and two third-rounders in the next two drafts, with a potential third-round compensatory pick incoming, according to Rapoport.Miami appears to be prepared for the future, but it's yet to be seen how its players will react to Tunsil's departure. It was reported earlier this week that Dolphins players would "legit revolt" if the lineman was traded for Clowney, with a source adding, "The backlash would be amazing."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. In an ultra-competitive NFL, teams that celebrate a playoff berth one year often see their fortunes come crashing down the next. But the trend also works the opposite way.Recently, we've seen a number of last-place clubs earn a postseason spot by winning their division the following season. For instance, the 2017-18 Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles finished at the bottom of the NFC East standings the year prior. The Houston Texans accomplished a similar feat last season, claiming the AFC South title one year after finishing in the division's cellar. The same happened to the 2017 Jacksonville Jaguars (3-13 in 2016), and the 2016 Dallas Cowboys (4-12 in 2015).As we turn our attention to the upcoming season, here's every last-place team from 2018 ranked by their chances of winning the division this time around.8. LeSean McCoy may not have been wanted in Buffalo anymore, but the recently released running back didn't wait long before finding a new home. The ex-Buffalo Bills standout is reuniting with his former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, signing a one-year deal worth up to $4 million with the Kansas City Chiefs, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The move puts McCoy back in Reid's offense, a system he played in from 2009 to 2012. The 31-year-old was a star with the Eagles during that time, which included a standout 2011 season when he ran for 1,309 yards and scored a career single-season high 17 touchdowns on the ground.Signing McCoy gives reigning MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes another option in the league's highest-scoring offense from a year ago. The six-time Pro Bowler will fill the spot in the backfield that Carlos Hyde vacated after the Chiefs reportedly dealt the veteran to Houston on Saturday.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. A couple of once-promising prospects are in need of new teams following Saturday's 53-man deadline.Former first-round receivers Laquon Treadwell and Josh Doctson were released by the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins, respectively, the teams announced Saturday. Both teams made unsuccessful last-ditch attempts to trade the disappointing pass-catchers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Treadwell has disappointed through his three years in the league, as the 23rd pick of the 2016 draft has yet to emerge as a reliable target. After recording just one catch in his rookie campaign, he put up 200 yards in his sophomore season and 302 yards in 2018.Overall, Treadwell has just 517 yards and one touchdown to his name. The former Ole Miss star has also struggled with drops, recording four on 53 targets in 2018.Doctson was taken one pick ahead of Treadwell in the same draft. While he's seen a little more success, he's also struggled. The former TCU standout battled injuries in his rookie season, one that ended with just two catches. He surpassed 500 receiving yards in his next two years and has eight career touchdowns for the Redskins.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved.
