LeSean McCoy apparently isn't short of suitors following his surprise release from the Buffalo Bills. The four teams showing the most interest in the veteran running back are the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Chargers, and New England Patriots, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. All four clubs are widely viewed as title contenders. Each team could give the 31-year-old a legitimate chance at earning his first Super Bowl ring. The Chargers could need an experienced option alongside Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson after giving holdout running back Melvin Gordon permission to seek a trade. The Chiefs, Eagles, and Patriots aren't in dire need of more backfield depth. However, McCoy's former coach, Andy Reid, is in Kansas City, Philadelphia is where the running back started his career, and New England is known for its love of squeezing the remaining production out of aging former Pro Bowlers.McCoy produced a career-low in both rushing yards (514) and yards-per-carry average (3.2) while scoring just three total touchdowns in 2018.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Jadeveon Clowney era in Houston has reached its end.The 2014 first overall pick is headed to Seattle, one of his two reportedly preferred trade destinations, as the Seahawks agreed to acquire him from the Texans. In return, Houston will receive linebackers Barkevious Mingo and Jacob Martin in addition to a third-round pick. Here's how both teams made out:Seahawks: A-It's a low-risk, high-reward move for Seahawks general manager John Schneider. He parted with two reserve linebackers and a non-premium draft pick that he can recoup via the compensatory formula if Clowney leaves as a free agent in 2020. With the addition of Clowney, Seattle can field one of the most fierce front sevens in the NFL:PositionPlayerEDGEJadeveon ClowneyDTJarran Reed*DTPoona FordEDGEEzekiel AnsahLBK.J. WrightLBBobby Wagner*Suspended six games for violating personal conduct policyThat group will also include pass-rusher L.J. Collier, a first-round draft pick, once he recovers from his ankle injury.Give Schneider and Co. credit for not panicking as the season approached and overpaying for a potential one-year rental. The Seahawks won't be able to extend Clowney during the season because of the franchise tag rules, and the 26-year-old will be searching for a gigantic deal in free agency. The Texans were reportedly keen on two of the Seahawks' starting offensive linemen in center Justin Britt and right tackle Germain Ifedi, but Seattle managed to keep both, making this a home run for the Seahawks. There is, however, one puzzling aspect of this deal: Why did Seattle trade Frank Clark only to go out a few months later and pick up Clowney? The Seahawks should know their only shot of retaining Clowney long term will be with the type of contract they refused to give Clark, who is probably the better player.Texans: DHow does Houston - a supposed Super Bowl contender with massive concerns along the offensive line and at running back - not net more for a Pro Bowl player at a premium position? In return for a bona fide star in the prime of his career, the Texans received essentially what they gave up for a part-time running back in Duke Johnson - a third-round pick.Neither Mingo nor Martin should be expected to make an impact in Houston. Mingo, a first-round bust from the 2013 draft, has never managed 50 tackles in a season and hasn't collected more than two sacks since his rookie campaign. Martin, a sixth-round pick in 2018, has nine career tackles. The Texans continue to not take advantage of Deshaun Watson's low-priced rookie contract. They entered free agency with a boatload of cap space but pocketed the bulk of it. They had the money to extend Clowney but didn't, and they wound up getting very little for him.Rumors piled up for weeks that Houston had become determined to shed Clowney and didn't want him to return to play on the tag. Despite what head coach Bill O'Brien insisted a day before the trade, it seemed that a rift developed between Clowney and the Texans. The Texans don't have a general manager. They should probably consider hiring one, even though it's too late to salvage the Clowney ordeal.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. The Los Angeles Chargers have granted the representatives for disgruntled running back Melvin Gordon permission to seek a trade, his agent Damarius Bilbo told Terez A. Paylor of Yahoo Sports. It was reported last week that contract talks haven't progressed as Gordon had hoped. The rusher has been away from the team throughout the summer and his holdout is expected to continue into the regular season unless he's given a new deal or traded.General manager Tom Telesco expressed frustration Friday that the two sides have yet to work out a new agreement, saying, "I'm disappointed it has lasted this long."The 26-year-old Gordon is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie contract. Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock, running back Theo Riddick, and tight end Jake Butt will begin the season on injured reserve, general manager John Elway said Saturday, according to ESPN's Jeff Legwold.Lock, a rookie, is expected to miss several weeks with a thumb injury. The New York Jets made 2019 third-round draft pick Jachai Polite one of their roster cuts ahead of Saturday's 4 p.m. deadline, according to Randy Lange of the team's official site.Initially projected to be a first-round pick, the linebacker fell down draft boards after a poor showing at the combine.Polite is the latest player drafted under the Mike Maccagnan regime to be released by the Jets. Maccagnan, New York's general manager for four seasons, was released less than three weeks after the draft. Head coach Adam Gase was named interim GM before Joe Douglas was hired as the permanent replacement.Polite played in all four preseason games and registered five total tackles.Aside from subpar combine numbers, Polite also graded poorly in interviews and admitted he never studied tape of himself, contributing to his decline in the draft.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Buffalo Bills announced Saturday that they've released running back LeSean McCoy."We made a tough decision today but felt that it was the right time to release LeSean McCoy," general manager Brandon Beane said in a statement. "I have nothing but great things to say about LeSean, and we truly wish him the best."McCoy's release came "out of left field" and was not preceded by a request for the 31-year-old to take a pay cut, reports Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source. The 11-year vet was among the highest-paid players at his position. He was scheduled to make $6.1 million in base salary in the final season of a five-year, $40-million extension signed with the Bills in 2015. The total dollar value of his contract was topped only by Todd Gurley, Le'Veon Bell, and Devonta Freeman. His annual average of $8 million ranked fifth behind Gurley, Bell, David Johnson, and Freeman.McCoy had been the starter in Buffalo since he was acquired via a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of the 2015 season. His production waned last season, as he totaled just 514 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games. Houston Texans edge defender Jadeveon Clowney adamantly opposes being traded to the Miami Dolphins, a league source told Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. The two teams have reportedly engaged in trade talks, though it's unclear if an agreement is close. Houston is believed to be interested in Laremy Tunsil, but a report on Thursday night indicated Dolphins players would "revolt" if the left tackle is dealt for Clowney.Clowney holds leverage during trade discussions because he can delay signing his franchise tender and threaten to leave in free agency after the season. The Pro Bowler can't play or be dealt until he signs his tender, and no team can extend him during the season because the deadline to sign franchised players to extensions has passed.Clowney has been rumored to prefer landing with the Philadelphia Eagles or Seattle Seahawks. It's unknown if those teams are reciprocating his reported interest. While Clowney returning to the Texans is still possible, all signs over the past several weeks indicate both parties are preparing for him to play elsewhere.Clowney, the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft, has recorded 18.5 sacks over the last two seasons. The Houston Texans have offered the Miami Dolphins star pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney and a first-round pick in their continued pursuit of left tackle Laremy Tunsil, Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald reports, citing sources.Houston's offer has yet to entice the Dolphins, however, as Jackson adds Miami wants another high draft pick included in the deal."There's no trade in place for him," Miami head coach Brian Flores said of Tunsil following his team's preseason game Thursday, according to Safid Deen of the South Florida Sun Sentinel.Trade talks surrounding Clowney have picked up with the regular season approaching. The three-time Pro Bowler has yet to sign the $15.9-million franchise tag he received heading into the offseason, and the deadline to replace the one-year tender with a long-term extension passed in July.Miami is one of several teams linked to Clowney in recent days, with the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets, and Washington Redskins also reportedly discussing a deal with the Texans. One of the league's most promising young pass-protectors, Tunsil would provide a significant upgrade to the Texans' offensive line, which remains a glaring concern heading into the 2019 campaign.Miami evidently has a high price tag on its former first-round selection, though, and it appears any decision to move Tunsil could result in some issues in the locker room. A report from Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald indicated Tuesday that Dolphins players would "legit revolt" if Tunsil was traded for Clowney, with a source adding "the backlash would be amazing."Tunsil, selected No. 13 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, is under team control through 2020.Clowney, meanwhile, figures to be in line for a lucrative contract extension after playing out the 2019 season on the franchise tag. Get ready for your season with theScore's 2019 Fantasy Football Draft Kit and subscribe to push notifications in the NFL Fantasy News section.Every game night during the preseason, theScore gets you caught up on the most important fantasy performances from around the league.Patriots' receiving corpsMaddie Meyer / Getty Images Sport / GettyBoth Julian Edelman and Josh Gordon suited up in the preseason finale when most starters around the league got the evening off.It was Gordon's first live game action since he was suspended in December, so Bill Belichick was likely giving him a chance to knock off some rust. If his play was any indication, it might take a little more time. Gordon caught just two of his six targets for 30 yards. The Patriots have a history of rounding into form as the season progresses, so no need to worry about Gordon who's inside my top 30 fantasy receivers for 2019.Edelman, meanwhile, was returning from a broken left thumb that kept him out for the majority of August and on his first catch of the game - a 20-yard pickup - he fell awkwardly on his left hand. The Super Bowl MVP actually fumbled the ball on the play, though he was ruled down by contact.Favoring the hand as he got up, Edelman headed to the sidelines, bringing an early end to his night. Although he spent time with the team trainer, no one appeared overly concerned, according to multiple beat writers in the stadium.New England is often tight-lipped about their ailments, so we may have to wait until the Week 1 injury report is released before we know more. If Edelman was fortunate enough to escape unscathed, he'll remain a fringe WR1 in fantasy.Even with Gordon and Edelman in the lineup, it was veteran Demaryius Thomas who stole the show with seven grabs, 87 yards, and a pair of scores, including this 35-yarder. It's great to see Thomas back from his Achilles' tear, but important to remember this happened against backups.Thomas looked like a receiver on the downside of his career in 2018. It's unlikely he'll regain his form as a weekly fantasy contributor, so don't waste a late-round pick or rush out to the waiver wire to get him.Instant Impressions

The Miami Dolphins have tabbed Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starting quarterback over Josh Rosen for the regular-season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, head coach Brian Flores announced on Thursday after the team's final preseason game.Fitzpatrick and Rosen, the 10th overall pick in 2018, had been competing throughout the summer, though the veteran was widely viewed as the favorite to earn the job.By beating out Rosen, the 36-year-old will start for his eighth team in 15 NFL seasons, and his third AFC East club.Fitzpatrick previously played for the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the then-St. Louis Rams.Although the journeyman gets the early nod, Miami will likely want to see what it has in Rosen, who was acquired from the Arizona Cardinals during the 2019 draft."I think Rosen will get there," said Flores, according to Hal Habib of The Palm Beach Post. "When? That's up to him. Both QBs handled the decision really well."Rosen spoke to the media shortly after Flores' announcement. He's confident about being able to unseat Fitzpatrick sometime this season."It's only (a matter of) time that this team is mine," said Rosen, according to Cameron Wolfe of ESPN. "But until then, I'm going to be as supportive of a backup as I can and push him every single day."Last season, Fitzpatrick started for the Bucs while Jameis Winston was suspended for the first three games of the campaign. He started hot, throwing eight touchdown passes over the first two games, before cooling off and forcing Tampa Bay to switch back to Winston following four Fitzpatrick starts. The Miami Dolphins appear to be the leading candidate to land Jadeveon Clowney, but the team's locker room is reportedly against left tackle Laremy Tunsil being involved in any potential trade for the Houston Texans pass-rusher.Dolphins players would "legit revolt" if Tunsil, who's widely regarded as one of their best players, was moved, a source told Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald."The backlash would be amazing," said Beasley's source. The Texans are in desperate need of an upgrade at left tackle and have reportedly been persistent in their pursuit of Tunsil. While the Dolphins have made several veteran players available in trade discussions entering a rebuilding campaign, Miami is reportedly unwilling to part with Tunsil. The former first-round pick is potentially under contract for the next two years at a bargain total price of $12.4 million.Meanwhile, the franchise-tagged Clowney can't be extended. Due to inflated deals, injuries, or lagging performances, various NFL veterans will find themselves without a team after Saturday's 4 p.m. ET 53-man roster deadline. Here are eight veterans in danger of not securing a roster spot as we near Week 1 of the 2019 regular season.Demaryius Thomas, WR, PatriotsThe return of Josh Gordon was a high note for the New England Patriots but could be unfortunate news for Thomas. The 31-year-old wideout started camp on the physically unable to perform list as he recovered from an Achilles tear suffered in December. His late emergence onto the roster didn't provide him much time to impress in camp and he was unable to showcase his health in preseason games.Although Jakobi Meyers was shaky during preseason play, the rookie receiver has impressed throughout camp and New England is sure to stick with Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, and first-round draft pick N'Keal Harry. Parting ways with Thomas would save the team $2.76 million, significantly more than releasing any of their younger players who've shown more in camp.LeSean McCoy, RB, BillsThe Buffalo Bills' premier rusher poses a significant financial burden to the team, which stands to save $6.4 million with his release.

The NFL is more likely to expand its playoff field than implement an 18-game regular season in the next collective bargaining agreement, sources told Mark Maske of the Washington Post. Those familiar with the league's inner workings during ongoing negotiations between the owners and the NFLPA are also convinced that the preseason will be shortened by either one or two games in the near future, Maske added. The loss in revenue from a shortened preseason would have to result in a revenue-boosting measure for owners to sign on, with an expanded playoff field being the most likely option due to the NFLPA's resistance to an 18-game season. However, it's unclear whether owners might push for a 17-game campaign.Although the owners reportedly view it as their right to unilaterally shorten the preseason and expand the playoffs, they're appearing to consider those measures within the context of CBA discussions with the NFLPA.Under the proposed playoff expansion, seven teams per conference would qualify for the postseason rather than six, according to Maske. Only one team per conference would receive a bye instead of two, resulting in six first-round playoff games in total. The current CBA runs through the 2020 season. A number of owners expressed a desire to have a new agreement in place before the upcoming campaign, but they're less optimistic with the opener just eight days away.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Houston Texans pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney is reportedly unafraid to miss regular-season games and is frustrated with the team for entertaining trade offers, sources told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.Clowney was franchise-tagged earlier this offseason but has yet to sign the one-year tender worth $15.9 million. It was reported Tuesday that Clowney met with Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores amid speculation he could be traded to the team. The Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks are also rumored to be potential suitors; however, he cannot be moved until he signs his franchise tender. This grants him leverage as he can refrain from signing the tender if he doesn't approve of any potential trade. The 26-year-old recently fired his longtime agent, Bus Cook, as he was unhappy with the state of negotiations.Clowney has been away from the team all summer, and it was initially reported he would rejoin the Texans after their third preseason game. With the July 15 deadline to strike a long-term deal having passed, the South Carolina product is unable to sign a multi-year contract with any team this season, including the Texans.Clowney will forfeit game checks if he remains away from the team into the regular season.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Questionable. I'm not going to go there yet because we just aren't to that point yet. But he's kind of exceeding where we thought he could be, so it's definitely a possibility."The pass-rusher has been out since early August and shed his walking boot on Aug. 14.The Niners will open their season on Sept. 8 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. After returning to practice Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon suffered a setback in his recovery from a torn ACL.The setback was a flare-up in McKinnon's surgically repaired knee, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Meanwhile, 49ers general manager John Lynch acknowledged on KNBR radio that the development was "not encouraging," according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.McKinnon signed a four-year, $30-million deal with San Francisco last offseason, but then tore his ACL in September and missed the entire 2018 campaign. This year, he was expected to fight for a role in a crowded 49ers backfield that added Tevin Coleman this offseason and also includes Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. On Wednesday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had nothing new to report in regards to contract negotiations with holdout Ezekiel Elliott. And with the regular-season opener less than two weeks away, Jones appeared to accept the fact that his team could be without its Pro Bowl running back."We've got a marathon here. We want Zeke when we get to the playoffs. We want Zeke when we're in the dog days of the season," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan.Jones added that the Cowboys are prepared to move forward without Elliott."We may very well play without a player that's not coming in on his contract," he said.Elliott has two years remaining on his current deal, but he's looking to be among the top-paid running backs in the NFL.When asked about the lack of progress in contract talks, Jones insisted that Elliott's previous off-field incidents have not held up discussions."I'm very comfortable off the field with Zeke," Jones said. "He certainly has had two or three issues, that's not a factor here."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

If the NFL is to ever cut down its four-game preseason format, the league's 32 team owners will need to be on board. One apparently already is.Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said Tuesday that the NFL would be a "happier place" for everyone if it had fewer preseason contests."I think four (games) is not necessary," Blank told ESPN's Vaughn McClure. "We need some preseason games for talent evaluation, for sure, with our first-and second-year players and developmental players; players who are free agents coming into our scheme."The vets need some of that, but not a whole lot of it. So, I think we can do with less preseason games. I think the world of the NFL would be (a) happier place, from all perspectives."NFL owners are reportedly continuing to push for an expanded season during negotiations for the next collective bargaining agreement. It's been speculated that the league would need to shorten its preseason as a concession in order to get players on board for a 17- or 18-game regular season, or an expansion of the playoffs. With teams around the league increasingly opting to rest star players in recent preseasons, it appears it's only a matter of time before the league office gets the message.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Arizona Cardinals have suspended COO Ron Minegar for a minimum of six weeks without pay following his Aug. 10 arrest, according to Katherine Fitzgerald of the Arizona Republic.Minegar was apprehended on suspicion of driving under the influence. The Cardinals also fined Minegar $200,000, which will be donated to the Arizona chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)."Minegar, who has been away from the team since the Aug. 10 incident, will not be able to return until he has completed several additional steps," the team said in a statement. "These include, but are not limited to, an alcohol assessment, counseling, and mandatory DUI education, as well as community service."The executive will apparently be prohibited from all team activities and won't be involved in any of Arizona's business operations during his suspension.Minegar won't face any additional discipline from the NFL, league spokesperson Brian McCarthy told Fitzgerald on Tuesday. In 2018, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim was arrested and later pleaded guilty to DUI charges. Arizona suspended Keim for five weeks and hit him with a $200,000 fine.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Although former Seattle Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin has yet to file official retirement papers with the NFL, he has no plans to resurrect his career."No. I'm done with football," Baldwin said to ESPN's Brady Henderson. After an injury-plagued 2018 season, Baldwin was released by the Seahawks in May with a failed physical designation. He battled injuries to his shoulder, elbow, groin, and both knees, yet still managed to play in 13 games and record 618 yards and five touchdowns.Despite that level of productivity, the 30-year-old had been contemplating his post-football life prior to last season and said his retirement planning began before his second year in the league.Baldwin's former college teammate at Stanford, Andrew Luck, shocked the sports world when he announced his own retirement on Saturday. Baldwin could empathize with the decision, taking injuries and long-term health into account." ... The perspective is, I have to do what's best for my wife and for my future children, and that comes first," Baldwin said. "And when you're faced with the decisions of, 'Well, if I continue to do this, what is my health going to be like when my child is born? When my kids are old enough to run around and play, am I going to be able to enjoy that experience and have that experience that I envision in my head? Am I going to be able to do that?' So you come to the proverbial fork in the road, as Andrew said, and you have to make a decision."The decision to play football originally and to put everything into it to accomplish these goals and to get money and all the things, that was somewhat selfish. It's the same thing on this side. It just looks different. It's all about self-preservation."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
