Flores: 'I wish we could have 14 defenders' vs. Chiefs
One of Week 14's marquee matchups pits the Kansas City Chiefs' first-ranked offense against the Miami Dolphins' No. 2 scoring defense. The Dolphins have allowed just 17.7 points per game this season - trailing only the Pittsburgh Steelers' 17.6 points allowed per game - but have yet to face an offense as dangerous as the Chiefs'.Kansas City is churning out 427.6 yards per game and ranks second in the league with an average of 30.8 points scored."I remember it was hard to stop them. It's still hard - it's probably harder now," Dolphins head coach Brian Flores - who's a former New England Patriots defensive coordinator - said, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com.Flores understands the challenges in defending the likes of Patrick Mahomes and top receiving weapons Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, but it doesn't end there."Who do you want to put on (Sammy) Watkins? Who do you want to put on Mecole Hardman? Who do you want to put on (Demarcus) Robinson? We've got to handle the backs, too. (Clyde Edwards-Helaire's) a good back. Le'Veon Bell's not a slouch, either," Flores said."I wish we could have 14 defenders," he added. "That'd be nice."The 11-1 Chiefs have already clinched a playoff spot and are tracking the Pittsburgh Steelers for the top seed in the AFC. The 8-4 Miami Dolphins currently sit in a wild-card spot and just one game behind the Buffalo Bills for the AFC East lead.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Panthers' COVID-19 cases linked to players gathering outside team facility
The Carolina Panthers' positive COVID-19 cases this week are linked to "some gathering of players outside the team facility" during Carolina's bye week, NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills said Wednesday, according to Joe Person of The Athletic. The Panthers closed their facilities and placed eight players on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday after two players reportedly tested positive. Wide receiver DJ Moore was reportedly one of the infected players.NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told all teams in a November memo they would play the rest of the season under the league's intensive protocol, which prohibits team or players gatherings away from club facilities."We've worked with the club on that," Sills said of the Panthers. "Worked with the involved individuals, and I think we'll continue to see improvement there (with) repeated messaging."Carolina reopened its facility Wednesday and activated offensive tackle Greg Little from the COVID-19 list. The 4-8 Panthers are scheduled to host the Denver Broncos on Sunday.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Titans GM: 1st-rounder Wilson dealing with 'personal issues'
The Tennessee Titans placed first-round draft pick Isaiah Wilson on their non-football illness list, the team announced Wednesday.Tennessee suspended Wilson - the 29th overall pick in this year's draft - for last Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns for violating team rules. Titans general manager Jon Robinson shed some light on the situation Wednesday."Currently, he is dealing with some personal issues, which will take some time for him to work through," Robinson said. "We will continue to help him and support him, with the hope that he can ultimately rejoin the team."Wilson has played just three snaps in his rookie season, all of which came in Week 12.The 8-4 Titans are in the midst of a playoff race and currently lead the AFC South.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL: We made 'safest possible decision' after Bryant tested positive
The NFL is standing by the procedures that saw Baltimore Ravens receiver Dez Bryant scratched from Tuesday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys.Bryant tested positive for COVID-19 and was pulled from the field minutes before kickoff."The process is consistent with how we have addressed a player positive, including the contact-tracing process," Dawn Aponte, the NFL's chief football administrative officer, said on a conference call Wednesday, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk."I would say one of the complicating factors, obviously, was the timing for the club. It was past the 90-minute mark, pregame, which is the final time that the club is able to set their active roster for the game. That was different than what we had experienced in the past."Bryant's test Tuesday morning reportedly came back inconclusive, yet he was still allowed to participate in pregame warmups. A point-of-care PCR test administered to the 32-year-old before the contest came back positive.Despite the positive test, the game was allowed to proceed. The NFL determined there were no other close contacts to Bryant, though he was seen interacting with players and coaches on both sidelines before the game."We took all of the data that we had in hand and made the safest possible decision," said NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills."All interactions are not created equal when it comes to risk. To have a high-risk close contact, there's really a matrix of four different variables which include cumulative exposure time, the distance, the ventilation available, and the use of a mask."So you're always looking for the interplay and the various weighing of those interactions. Again, every interaction does not carry an equal risk."Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Week 14 survivor picks: Perfect bounce-back spot for Seattle
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. Each of my top-four picks in Week 13 came out as winners - I distinctly said to avoid the Steelers, and that the Giants will give the Seahawks a run for their money. If you're still alive in your survivor pool, you can almost taste the money. Here's how to survive Week 14.Week 14 confidence rankingConfidence rankings (CR) are out of 10 based on the author's picks:AWAYHOME (SPREAD)PICK (CR)NY JetsSeattle (-13)SEA (10)MinnesotaTampa Bay (-6.5)TB (8)TennesseeJacksonville (+7)TEN (8)New OrleansPhiladelphia (+7)NO (6)New EnglandLA Rams (-6)LAR (5)Green BayDetroit (+8)GB (5)DenverCarolina (N/A)CAR (4)AtlantaLA Chargers (+2.5)ATL (4)Kansas CityMiami (+7)KC (4)IndianapolisLas Vegas (+3)IND (4)BaltimoreCleveland (PK)BAL (3)ArizonaNY Giants (+2.5)NYG (1)WashingtonSan Francisco (-3.5)SF (1)PittsburghBuffalo (-2)BUF (1)DallasCincinnati (+3.5)CIN (1)HoustonChicago (+2)HOU (1)(Odds source: theScore Bet)1. Seattle Seahawks (vs. New York Jets)How much needs to be said about this game? Seattle hit a blip last week against a fiercely competitive Giants team, but Pete Carroll rarely loses two consecutive games at home. The Seahawks are 4-1 in Seattle coming off a home loss in their previous game, and they're both 3-0 straight up and against the spread when favored in that spot, including 16- and 18-point victories as 14- and 12.5-point favorites, respectively.Seattle's defense has been progressing nicely, and while the offense has hit an unexpected rough patch, this is as good a get-right game as there is for Russell Wilson and Co. The Jets are giving up 31.2 points and 386.2 yards per game on the road this season while managing just 12.2 and 258 on offense. This game won't be particularly competitive.2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (vs. Minnesota Vikings)If this spread feels too big for a game featuring a pair of wild-card hopefuls, it isn't. It's fair to say Tom Brady has enjoyed better days, but many of his struggles this season can be attributed to his miserable play when under pressure. He's got a completion percentage of just 45.1 when his pocket collapses, a QB rating of 49, and has more interceptions (five) than touchdowns (three). Those numbers jump to a 70.9 completion percentage, 109 QB rating, with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions when kept clean in the pocket. There will be a lot of that Sunday against a Vikings team whose sack leader was traded away weeks ago. Minnesota's pass rush grades as a bottom-three unit in the NFL, and with two weeks to prepare for this game, coming off a pair of losses, the Buccaneers are primed to bounce back in Week 14.3. Tennessee Titans (@ Jacksonville Jaguars)Full credit to the Jaguars for continuing to compete, but this is a tough spot for them coming off an emotional defeat in Minnesota. They left it all out on the field in a game that lasted nearly four hours but return home empty-handed to face an angry Titans team that was just steamrolled.Mike Vrabel is way too good of a coach not to elicit a strong response from his team in this game, which carries massive playoff and seeding implications. The Titans simply have too much firepower on offense for a Jaguars defense lacking in talent and experience. Just once this season has Tennessee faced a defense that ranks in the bottom seven in the NFL - as Jacksonville does - and put up 42 points in that contest. Mike Glennon can't keep up with that.4. New Orleans Saints (@ Philadelphia Eagles)Can Jalen Hurts spark the Eagles' offense? Sure. Can Hurts fix the Eagles? Absolutely not. This is a brutal first test for the rookie against a Saints defense playing as well as any unit in the NFL right now. New Orleans has allowed just two touchdowns in the last five weeks and is giving up just 8.8 points per game over that span. There just doesn't seem to be a world in which the Eagles get right in this spot.5. Los Angeles Rams (vs. New England Patriots)At one point this season, the Patriots were 2-5 and trailing the Jets by 10 points in the fourth quarter on Monday Night Football. They've managed quite the turnaround since then, but the competition hasn't exactly been stout. This is a big step up in class against the Rams. Los Angeles' defense will make life miserable for Cam Newton, while the offense won't find much resistance against a Patriots defense that's below average in all three phases.6. Green Bay Packers (@ Detroit Lions)Last week I took to just about every platform to preach the "bet on the team that just fired their coach" theory, and the Lions took that theory to 3-0 on the season with an outright win against the Bears. Of course, firing your coach doesn't solve everything. Both the Texans and Falcons lost their second games after firing their coaches, and the Lions are likely in for a similar fate. Even with Kenny Golladay and D'Andre Swift potentially returning, neither have played in weeks, and the Detroit defense just isn't equipped to handle the threat of Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, and Aaron Jones.7. Carolina Panthers (vs. Denver Broncos)As we get more clarity about the Panthers' COVID situation later in the week, I'd definitely consider pushing this game higher up. As of now, eight players have been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, many of whom can be cleared before Sunday. Carolina also welcomes back Christian McCaffrey, while the Broncos will be without corner A.J. Bouye, who was hit with a suspension. The Panthers are too well-coached under Matt Rhule to fade against a shorthanded Denver defense.8. Atlanta Falcons (@ Los Angeles Chargers)The Falcons are 4-3 since firing Dan Quinn and should probably be 5-2 if not for a stunning mishap against the Lions. Two of those losses came against the Saints. Defensively, Raheem Morris has figured things out, while Matt Ryan has been successful with a full complement of weapons, which he'll have here. The Chargers have fully quit on Anthony Lynn, and unless he's fired midweek, there's no changing my pick here.9. Kansas City Chiefs (@ Miami Dolphins)A team as well-coached as the Dolphins has a chance to win every week. Brian Flores' defense has the horses to contain Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, while the offense can find success if Chan Gailey opens things up as he did in the second half of Week 13.10. Indianapolis Colts (@ Las Vegas Raiders)The Colts are more efficient on offense, have a much stinger defense, and hold the head coaching advantage. Sometimes it's really that simple.Alex Moretto is theScore's supervising editor of sports betting. Steelers' Conner set to return vs. Bills after removal from COVID-19 list
The Pittsburgh Steelers activated running back James Conner from the reserve/COVID-19 list Wednesday, setting him up to return for Sunday's AFC showdown with the Buffalo Bills, the team announced.Conner missed Pittsburgh's Week 12 win over the Baltimore Ravens and the team's Week 13 loss to the Washington Football Team after reportedly testing positive for the coronavirus.Benny Snell replaced Conner, who was declared cancer-free in 2016 after being diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma in 2015, in both games.Snell rushed for 60 yards against the Ravens but only managed five yards on eight attempts against Washington, which handed Pittsburgh its first loss of the season.Despite their success this year, the Steelers have struggled to consistently produce on the ground. The AFC North leaders rank 29th in the league with 92.6 rushing yards per game.Conner has racked up 645 yards and five touchdowns on 145 carries this season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Pederson: Wentz can still 'be an exceptional QB in this league'
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson still believes Carson Wentz has a bright future in the NFL despite his decision to turn to Jalen Hurts for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints."I think Carson Wentz can be an exceptional quarterback in this league. He's proven that," Pederson said Wednesday, according to Zach Berman of The Athletic. "Just get back to being Carson Wentz, back on track. That's my focus with him."Wentz was benched during Philadelphia's Week 13 loss to the Green Bay Packers after the latest in a long line of poor performances. The former No. 2 overall pick - who leads the league with 15 interceptions - managed just 79 yards on 15 attempts, forcing Pederson to insert Hurts into the game. The second-round rookie provided a spark against the Packers. He threw one touchdown, racked up 109 yards through the air, and added another 29 yards on the ground. Hurts also had one interception. With 3-8-1 Philadelphia likely needing to win out to catch the 5-7 New York Giants and 5-7 Washington Football Team in the NFC East, Pederson announced Monday that Hurts will replace Wentz for Sunday's contest. The spotlight will now turn to the former Heisman finalist, who starred at Alabama and Oklahoma before the Eagles surprisingly selected him in April.Hurts was lauded for his professionalism and maturity as he dealt with a roller-coaster college career, and Pederson wants the rookie to use those traits to help smooth the transition from Wentz."Just go out there this week and, obviously, take control of the huddle," Pederson said. "And just lead, lead the way he knows how. ... That's my message to him: 'Be Jalen Hurts. Do the things you can do.'"While the Eagles are possibly switching to Hurts for the rest of the campaign, the team is likely married to Wentz for at least one more season.Wentz inked a four-year, $128-million extension last year. Philadelphia would incur an unworkable $59.2-million dead-money cap hit by cutting the quarterback this offseason.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Broncos' Bouye handed 6-game ban for PEDs
Denver Broncos cornerback A.J. Bouye received a six-game suspension Wednesday for performance-enhancing drugs, the team confirmed.Bouye was reportedly awaiting punishment Tuesday after being found to have used the same supplement that led to six-game suspensions for Houston Texans wide receiver Will Fuller and cornerback Bradley Roby. The ban will keep Bouye out of action for the remainder of the season as well as the first two games of 2021. Bouye notched 23 tackles and six pass breakups this year, his first in Denver following an offseason trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Broncos will enter the final quarter of the campaign without their top three cornerbacks, as Bryce Callahan and Essang Bassey are sidelined with injuries. Callahan will be eligible to return from injured reserve in Week 16, but Bassey won't play again this year due to a torn ACL.Bouye made the Pro Bowl in 2017 as a member of the Jaguars. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Texans before signing a five-year, $67.5-million contract with the Jaguars in free agency, a deal that still has one year remaining. Denver could save nearly $13.4 million by releasing him this offseason.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Lamar: COVID-19 made me feel 'like I didn't play for a whole season'
The Baltimore Ravens got their season back on track with a win Tuesday over the Dallas Cowboys thanks to the impressive return of reigning MVP Lamar Jackson. The star quarterback racked up 201 total yards and three touchdowns in the 34-17 victory after missing last week's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers following a positive COVID-19 test."I wouldn't wish that on anybody, though. It's not good to have," Jackson said of contracting the virus, according to Ryan Mink of the team's official website."It felt like I didn't play for a whole season. I was like, 'It feels good to be back with my guys.' Even in practice, walking into the locker room and stuff, I was like, 'Man, I couldn't wait to see you, your faces.' It was like two weeks that I didn't see those guys. I couldn't wait to get out there and perform for those guys, because I know how much it would mean for us to win games."Jackson said he's feeling well after experiencing flu-like symptoms, though he still can't taste or smell. The Ravens suffered a widespread COVID-19 outbreak that forced the NFL to postpone their game against Pittsburgh three times.Baltimore's victory over Dallas pushed the AFC North team to 7-5 and ended its three-game losing streak. The Ravens will need Jackson with a vital divisional showdown against the 9-3 Cleveland Browns set for Monday night.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Washington's Gibson could miss 49ers game with turf toe
Washington Football Team running back Antonio Gibson is in danger of missing Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers after being diagnosed with turf toe, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.Gibson suffered the injury early into Washington's Week 13 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers and was forced to leave the contest. He had two carries for 14 yards. The rookie third-round pick entered the Pittsburgh matchup with 645 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. He's been key to Washington's recent resurgence, rushing for 209 yards and four scores over the previous two weeks. If Gibson can't play against San Francisco, it'll be a major blow to Washington as it competes with the similarly streaking New York Giants for the NFC East crown. Both Washington and New York sit at 5-7 after putting together three- and four-game winning streaks, respectively.Peyton Barber and J.D. McKissic will likely split backfield duties if Gibson is sidelined.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Power Rankings - Week 14: Every team's most important free agent
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors. With the season nearing its end, we're identifying each team's biggest impending free agent.1. Kansas City Chiefs (11-1) Jamie Squire / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 1While Kansas City doesn't have a marquee free agent to re-sign, it is facing an offseason in which the team could lose a lot of its depth. The biggest name among the host of free agents is Sammy Watkins. The veteran - who took a pay cut to stay in 2020 - only has 295 yards this season, so it's not like he's irreplaceable. But without a ton of cap space, the Chiefs might prefer to bring back the known commodity on a cheap deal.2. New Orleans Saints (10-2)Previous Rank: 3Trey Hendrickson couldn’t have picked a better time to have a breakout campaign. The Saints defensive end has put his name on the map in the midst of a contract year, notching a career-high 10.5 sacks. The next place Hendrickson should put his name on is the bottom of a very lucrative proposal, but New Orleans may need to perform a few magic tricks to keep him. The Saints are projected to be $95.4 million over the cap in 2021, per Spotrac.3. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-1)Previous Rank: 2JuJu Smith-Schuster has been all smiles in 2020. The wideout has solidified his importance, becoming the Steelers’ go-to target in crucial situations. Smith-Schuster is dancing in the end zone and on Tik Tok - and his next move may have him dancing all the way to the bank. A hefty payday likely awaits the young receiver, but will the Steelers have the money to keep him in Pittsburgh?4. Buffalo Bills (9-3)Previous Rank: 5Like many teams, the Bills may be in a tough position due to a possible salary cap reduction in 2021. If Buffalo can find a way to make it work, Matt Milano is one player deserving of a payday. The Bills are projected to have $4.8 million in cap space in 2021, according to Spotrac.5. Green Bay Packers (9-3)Previous Rank: 4 Stacy Revere / Getty Images Sport / GettySome may say running backs don't matter, but Aaron Jones is making a good argument to challenge that notion. The Packers ball carrier has totaled 1,033 yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns this season. Jones will likely be looking to break the bank, but it has proved unwise to hand out long-term contracts to backs. A difficult situation could be on the horizon.6. Los Angeles Rams (8-4)Previous Rank: 9Leonard Floyd signed a one-year deal with the Rams last offseason after four uneventful years in Chicago. Floyd has settled nicely in Los Angeles, tying a new career high in sacks (7). Hopefully, the linebacker signs a new deal to stay in the City of Angels and puts a Hollywood ending on his redemption arc.7. Seattle Seahawks (8-4)Previous Rank: 6The Seahawks’ secondary owns the 32nd ranked passing defense. One of the few bright spots has been cornerback Shaquill Griffin, who will be a free agent in 2021. Griffin lacks flash - with just five career interceptions - but as the heart and soul of the secondary, he consistently gets the job done.8. Indianapolis Colts (8-4)Previous Rank: 8With Jacob Eason as the only quarterback under contract for 2021 and the likelihood top draft prospects will be long gone before Indy picks, the team's priority should be retaining Philip Rivers. A long-term successor must be found soon, but it will be hard for the Colts to find a better stop-gap option for 2021 than the 38-year-old, who has performed well in his first season in Indy.9. Cleveland Browns (9-3)Previous Rank: 10The Browns restructured the last year of Olivier Vernon's contract this offseason, and part of the deal was not using the franchise or transition tag on him in 2021. The pass rusher has put together another solid season, racking up five sacks. Cleveland would be smart to bring him back as a strong complement to starter Myles Garrett.10. Tennessee Titans (8-4) Frederick Breedon / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 7Guess who leads the Titans in receiving yards? It’s not A.J. Brown - it’s Corey Davis. The 25-year old is set to be a free agent and is building an impressive resume. Davis, who's on pace to set numerous career-highs, is PFF’s second-ranked NFL receiver. Extending Davis' stay in Tennessee would send shivers down the spines of defensive coordinators in the AFC South.11. Miami Dolphins (8-4)Previous Rank: 11The Dolphins don’t have many big-name free agents, but Ryan Fitzpatrick is one name to keep an eye on. The veteran signal-caller has developed a cult-like following in Miami, and while it will be the Tua Tagovailoa show moving forward, a top-end backup is never a bad luxury to have.12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-5)Previous Rank: 12Injuries have kept Chris Godwin from repeating his breakout 2019 campaign, but his talent and youth make him one of the biggest upcoming free agents in the NFL. Godwin has recorded 1,895 receiving yards over his last two seasons. The 24-year-old receiver could cash in, but the Bucs also have a few other free-agent challenges coming up. A franchise tag may buy time until Tampa Bay can strike a long-term deal with Godwin.13. Baltimore Ravens (7-5)Previous Rank: 13The Ravens went out and got Yannick Ngakoue to help their late-season push. Now, the only question is whether they can bring him back. Ngakoue hasn’t done much since arriving in Baltimore, but he figures to be a key player many teams will have their eyes on.14. Las Vegas Raiders (7-5)Previous Rank: 15Las Vegas isn't in danger of losing any core pieces this offseason, but the Raiders should look to keep Nelson Agholor after helping revitalize the speedster's career this campaign. Agholor has helped unlock Derek Carr's long-dormant aggressive side, which should be worth a decent-sized extension for Jon Gruden and Co.15. Minnesota Vikings (6-6) Hannah Foslien / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 16The Vikings' in-house free-agent focus will be on Anthony Harris for a second straight year. Minnesota hit the safety with the franchise tag this past offseason in a moderately surprising move. Harris has taken a step back from his standout 2019 performance but will likely still command a big extension. Whether the Vikings believe he's worth it remains uncertain.16. Arizona Cardinals (6-6)Previous Rank: 14Not many cornerbacks remain productive into their 30's, but Patrick Peterson might be able to fend off father time. The Cardinals will have to decide whether they want to risk another contract with the veteran corner, who has recorded three interceptions this season.17. New England Patriots (6-6)Previous Rank: 18The Patriots won’t be in position to take a top quarterback in next year’s draft which makes bringing back the only credible passer on their roster a good idea. Cam Newton may not be putting up monster numbers anymore, but he’s leading New England back into the playoff race after winning four of the last five games.18. New York Giants (5-7)Previous Rank: 22The Giants’ defense has been instrumental in their recent four-game win streak and a ton of credit should go to Leonard Williams. The 26-year-old defensive lineman was franchise tagged last offseason, but he probably won’t be settling for another prove-it deal again. Williams, a former top-ten pick, has anchored the Giants’ defensive line and set a new career-high in sacks (8.5) in the process.19. San Francisco 49ers (5-7)Previous Rank: 17Besides a calf injury keeping him out for a good portion of this season, Richard Sherman seems to have found the fountain of youth in San Francisco. Unfortunately, that time may be coming to an end, according to the talented cornerback - Sherman is in the last year of his deal and circumstances are alluding to a departure. The 49ers would undoubtedly like to bring Sherman back, but the team is in for a massive juggling act with 25 unrestricted free agents in 2021.20. Washington Football Team (5-7) Justin K. Aller / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 23The Washington Football Team should be all hands-on deck in convincing three-time Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff to re-sign. Washington won’t have to go to all ends of the world to make it happen - a contract ensuring Scherff becomes one of the highest-paid interior linemen should do the trick.21. Houston Texans (4-8)Previous Rank: 21Will Fuller looked like he was finally emerging into a consistent, big-play receiver until the league handed him a six-game suspension. If his breakout season isn’t a good enough reason to re-sign Fuller, maybe Houston should just ask Deshaun Watson how crucial it is to bring the receiver back. After trading his favorite target last offseason, it's time for Houston to do its franchise quarterback a favor.22. Atlanta Falcons (4-8)Previous Rank: 20Keanu Neal has seemingly found his groove again. The 25-year-old defensive back, who's been injury-plagued in past years, has been a force near the line of scrimmage with 76 tackles. The Falcons may be entering a period of transition, but Neal could still be a part of the team’s future at the right price.23. Carolina Panthers (4-8)Previous Rank: 19Panthers tackle Taylor Moton has not been mentioned much this year, but that’s usually not a bad thing when you play on the offensive line. Moton is quietly having a spectacular campaign, setting himself up for a mammoth pay raise this offseason. Carolina let cornerback James Bradberry walk last year and he is playing at a Pro Bowl level now. They can’t afford to make the same mistake with Moton.24. Denver Broncos (4-8)Previous Rank: 25The Broncos have a few choices to make this offseason. The team will have to decide on aging pass-rusher’s Von Miller’s club option, but their biggest goal should be getting Justin Simmons to sign on the dotted line. Simmons, currently playing on the franchise tag, is PFF’s third-ranked safety this season and has done more than enough to warrant a lucrative deal.25. Detroit Lions (5-7) Rey Del Rio / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 25Where are the Lions headed? Detroit will have a new coach and possibly even a different field general next year depending on how the franchise handles Matthew Stafford’s future. The Lions should ensure there's a top receiver to catch the football whether Stafford is back or not. Time to pony up for Kenny Golladay.26. Chicago Bears (5-7)Previous Rank: 24There may not be a player who has made more out of a poor situation than Allen Robinson. Poor quarterback play has crippled Chicago during his tenure but the receiver has remained consistent. As undoubtedly the offense’s most talented player, the Bears may need to present loads of cash at the negotiating table to keep Robinson from bolting for greener pastures.27. Philadelphia Eagles (3-8-1)Previous Rank: 27The Eagles don’t have any free agents that absolutely need to be brought back, which is good since the team is projected to be six-feet under in cap space. Jalen Mills is a trustworthy defensive back and has started every game he’s played since 2017. Keeping Mills in Philly on a modest deal shouldn't be too hard.28. Los Angeles Chargers (3-9)Previous Rank: 26The Chargers have found their franchise quarterback and their next task should be to overload him with as many weapons as possible. Keenan Allen is already taken care of, so the next order of business should be finding a way to keep Hunter Henry in Los Angeles.29. Dallas Cowboys (3-9)Previous Rank: 29The Cowboys will have a few unexpected dilemmas when the season ends - mostly surrounding Dak Prescott's future. With a top pick looming, Dallas will have to weigh Prescott’s health and contract demands. The Cowboys could always shock the world and select a new franchise QB in the draft, but Jerry Jones has been adamant Prescott is part of the team's projections. Now, the only question remaining is whether Jones will be as open with his wallet as he is with his words.30. Cincinnati Bengals (2-9-1)Previous Rank: 30 Patrick McDermott / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Bengals should wisely move on from veteran A.J. Green this offseason, but they should also do all they can to extend William Jackson before he hits the market. The 28-year-old cornerback is having a phenomenal campaign and could still have many good years ahead of him. Pairing Jackson with talented safety Jessie Bates would ensure Cincinnati has a credible secondary for the foreseeable future.31. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-11)Previous Rank: 31It’s always easier to re-sign an impending free agent when they express interest in returning. Keelan Cole hasn’t been shy in sharing his love for Jacksonville’s warm weather and a deal appeasing both parties shouldn’t be too challenging to work out.32. New York Jets (0-12)Previous Rank: 320-12 teams shouldn’t be in any rush to bring anyone back, but the Jets have an underrated safety in Marcus Maye. The impending free agent has flashed even if it doesn’t always come across in the box score, coming in as PFF’s fourth-ranked safety this season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Lambeau Field limited to employees and their families for rest of season
The Green Bay Packers announced Tuesday that attendance at Lambeau Field would be limited to team employees and their families for the remainder of the season. The team made the decision with an eye toward rising COVID-19 cases nationwide. The Packers allowed roughly 500 employees and their families to Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team was hopeful about letting fans return to the historic stadium at some point this season."While our community and state currently are seeing a promising trend in the infection rates, we made the decision, along with our health care and public health partners, to continue hosting only the group of employees and their families," Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy said in a statement.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Eagles bench Wentz, name Jalen Hurts starting QB
Jalen Hurts will be the starting quarterback Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles face the New Orleans Saints, the team announced Tuesday.Carson Wentz will head to the bench and take on backup duties.Head coach Doug Pederson noted he made the decision due to his dissatisfaction with the offense."We're not where we want to be as an offense. I looked at the whole thing and decided that for this week to look for that spark again to try to get the team over the hump, to try to get everybody playing better," Pederson said.Hurts replaced Wentz in last Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers, sparking a mini-surge from the inconsistent Eagles offense. The rookie finished the day 5-for-12 for 109 yards with one touchdown and an interception.Wentz's struggles have been staggering this season, leading to calls to start Hurts in recent weeks. The 27-year-old is completing under 60% of his passes and leads the NFL in interceptions (15).The former Pro Bowler signed a four-year, $128-million extension with the Eagles in 2019. The deal also contains slightly over $107 million in guaranteed money.Philadelphia will face many questions over the long-term future of the quarterback position this offseason. The franchise used a second-round pick on Hurts in the 2020 draft but must also consider Wentz's contractual situation. Wentz carries a $34.6-million cap hit next season and would leave a $59.2-million dead-cap hit if cut, according to Spotrac.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NFC East odds update: Can Jalen Hurts save Eagles' season?
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. As if the NFC East needed any more drama this season, this week provided easily the craziest three-day stretch yet for the NFL's worst division. The Giants beat the Seahawks on the road Sunday with a backup quarterback to take the division lead. On Monday, Washington ended the Steelers' perfect season to pull back into a tie for first place. Then Tuesday, after another disappointing showing from Carson Wentz, the Eagles finally named Jalen Hurts as the team's starting quarterback, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. It was just over a month ago that Philadelphia was the prohibitive favorite to win this division at -165, and only two weeks since oddsmakers still had them with the shortest odds to make the playoffs among NFC East teams. Those odds have since plummeted to 14-1, tied with the Cowboys for the division's worst price.Which team will win NFC East?OddsNew York Giants-140Washington Football Team+165Dallas Cowboys+1400Philadelphia Eagles+1400Can Hurts turn things around? With the season in peril, the Eagles are turning to their rookie quarterback, who showed flashes in Sunday's loss to the Packers but still finished 5-for-12 with 109 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception in 26 snaps. He also rushed five times for 29 yards, with 25 of those coming on the offense's lone scoring drive in Hurts' second series. If Hurts is even an average starter over the next four weeks, it could do wonders for a Philly offense beset by injuries, turnovers, and terrible quarterback play. In 12 starts, Wentz leads the league in interceptions (15) and ranks 27th in QBR (49.2) among qualified quarterbacks. He's also been sacked a league-high 50 times and has 10 fumbles, second-most in the NFL.Hurts' mobility should help him survive the onslaught of injuries along the Eagles' O-line, but he might not be the answer to Philadelphia's turnover woes. Hurts' interception rate in college (1.9%) is only marginally better than what Wentz posted at North Dakota State (2.3%), and his turnover margins in the NFL - one interception and three fumbles in 59 snaps - aren't encouraging, even in a small sample size. One silver lining is three of the Eagles' final four opponents rank in the bottom 12 in takeaways, though the Saints provide an early test for Hurts this week. If Philadelphia can protect the ball and force Taysom Hill into similarly tough spots Sunday, it's not crazy to think the team could rip off a four-game win streak to end the season. But even that might not be enough to take this division.Who will win the NFC East? The Eagles are still 1.5 games back of the Giants and Washington, and they'd essentially need a perfect run and some luck to win the division. Given what we've seen from Hurts thus far, that's not a sound bet even at long odds.So who's worth betting at the top of the NFC East? New York holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Washington, so it makes sense why it's slotted as the favorite. Still, I wouldn't lay the short price. The Giants face a tough slate with the Cardinals, Browns, and Ravens over the next three weeks, and they could be without Daniel Jones as he recovers from a hamstring injury.Meanwhile, Washington faces three teams with losing records over the final four weeks, not including the same Seattle squad that New York shut down Sunday. Ron Rivera's group also ranks well above the rest of the division in DVOA (No. 17), PFF team grades (No. 15), and point differential (No. 16).I said Washington was the best bet to win the NFC East two months ago, and that's still the case now at +165 odds. It's becoming clearer every week that it's the best team in this division, and a change at quarterback for the Eagles doesn't change that.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Report: Broncos' Bouye facing PED suspension
Denver Broncos cornerback A.J. Bouye is facing a suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs, a source told NFL Network's James Palmer.Bouye took a supplement connected to the six-game bans that Will Fuller and Bradley Roby of the Houston Texans received last week, according to Mike Klis of 9News.The eight-year veteran has completed his appeal, according to Klis. The Broncos are already without two of their top three cornerbacks, as Bryce Callahan and Essang Bassey are on the shelf with injuries.Bouye has recorded 23 tackles and six pass breakups over seven appearances this season. The Broncos acquired him from the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, sending a fourth-round pick the other way.Undrafted out of UCF in 2013, Bouye made the Pro Bowl with the Jaguars in 2017. Report: Ravens' Campbell, Williams expected to play vs. Cowboys
Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell is expected to return from his calf injury and suit up for Tuesday's game against the Dallas Cowboys, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports.Nose tackle Brandon Williams is also likely to play Tuesday after dealing with an ankle injury, Pelissero adds.Campbell has been sidelined since Week 9, while Williams has been out since Week 10.Both defensive linemen were also part of Baltimore's COVID-19 outbreak in recent weeks. Campbell tested positive for the virus and was activated off the COVID-19 list Saturday. The Ravens activated Williams before the Week 12 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he was ruled out due to his injury.Being on the reserve group requires players to isolate, which likely affected the amount of treatment the players could receive for their injuries. The Ravens will also get reinforcements on offense. Lamar Jackson will be under center for Tuesday's bout after spending Week 12 on the COVID-19 list.Baltimore has lost three straight games and needs a victory to avoid slipping in the AFC's playoff picture.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Andre Johnson, Dungy on Texans' committee to help find HC, GM
The Houston Texans have put together an All-Star committee to help find the team's next head coach and general manager.Hall of Fame coaches Tony Dungy and Jimmy Johnson headline the five-man group, along with former Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson, the team announced Tuesday.R.C. Buford, the CEO of the San Antonio Spurs, and Rod Graves, the executive director of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, round out the committee.Houston chairman and CEO Cal McNair will also rely on the search firm Korn Ferry while considering feedback from the committee. However, he will ultimately make the final call on the new hires."We will consider any input we receive, but at the end of the day, my mom and I will decide who will lead our football team into the future," McNair said.Dungy and Johnson have won three combined Super Bowls as head coaches. Johnson led the Cowboys in the early '90s, while Dungy is most known for guiding the Colts from 2002 to 2008.Andre Johnson made seven Pro Bowls with the Texans, and he holds numerous franchise receiving records.Houston fired head coach Bill O'Brien earlier this season after an 0-4 start. O'Brien was also serving as the team's general manager, leaving a void at both positions.Romeo Crennel has taken over on an interim basis, and the 73-year-old could become the team's full-time head coach in 2021.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rivera chose all-white unis vs. Steelers: 'I was looking for a big game'
Ron Rivera ordered the rare all-white uniform set for the Washington Football Team hoping it would lead to a breakthrough performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers."I was looking for a big game," the head coach said Tuesday, hours after Washington ended the Steelers' undefeated streak at 11 games, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.Washington hadn't worn white tops with white pants since 2009, but Rivera recalled having success in all-white uniforms while he was the head coach of the Carolina Panthers. He instructed his staff to get the uniforms ready but didn't tell his players about them ahead of time.Washington fell into a 14-0 hole early against the Steelers on Monday but rallied for a 23-17 win and a third consecutive victory. Washington's previous four triumphs this season came against teams that have yet to post more than three wins.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Belichick reviewed Super Bowl LIII with Rams on tap in Week 14
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick went over the Super Bowl LIII tape to help prepare for a Week 14 encounter with the Los Angeles Rams."We looked at it, but a lot of football has been played since then," he told reporters Tuesday, according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin. The Patriots and Rams last met in February 2019, when they played in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl of all time. The Rams came into that affair with one of the league's top offenses, but Belichick and Co. stymied them with a quarters coverage scheme.New England didn't get much going offensively in that contest, either, scoring the game's only touchdown with seven minutes remaining in the final frame before winning 13-3.While the Patriots will be vastly different when the teams meet again Sunday, the Rams will look familiar. Jared Goff continues to quarterback Sean McVay's play-action offense, and Aaron Donald is enjoying another spectacular season while anchoring the defense."He's an outstanding player," Belichick said of Donald, per Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald. "Can wreck a game … he's definitely a major factor in a game."New England contained Donald in the Super Bowl, holding him to five tackles and one quarterback hit after he posted 20.5 sacks in the regular season to claim his second Defensive Player of the Year award. The Patriots have won four of their last five games to get back in the AFC playoff race with one month to go in the regular season.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Ron Rivera: Upset win over Steelers felt like 'euphoria'
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Ron Rivera was on cloud nine following the Washington Football Team's upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.Washington ended Pittsburgh's undefeated run at 11 games on Monday evening and the team's head coach described the mood in the locker room as "euphoria," Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post reports."It's up there (among the best wins of my career)," Rivera told reporters following the game, according to WUSA9's Darren M. That's one of the storied franchises as well in this league. So to come in and win, I thought that was big for our guys. I'm real proud of them."Thanks to a stingy defensive effort and a late field goal from Dustin Hopkins, Washington moves to 5-7 on the campaign and into a tie atop the NFC East with the New York Giants. The victory was the organization's third in a row, having dropped seven of its previous eight games before the streak."These guys deserve it," Rivera said, via ESPN's John Keim. Cowboys-Ravens best bets: Jackson, Baltimore out for redemption
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. The reason why some games are being played on Tuesday this year isn't great, but having another day of the week with football to bet on is incredibly clutch. So what's the bet(s) for Tuesday? We can help with that.Alex KolodziejLamar Jackson over 50.5 rushing yards (-110)The Ravens couldn't run the ball last week against the Steelers. Baltimore should be banned from the league if the team's unable to get the ground game going on Tuesday against the Cowboys.Dallas currently ranks No. 29 in DVOA rush defense and No. 25 in explosive rush rate allowed. Jackson, who was absent in Week 12, has rushed for at least 50 yards in each of the last five games. The Ravens are a nine-point favorite with an offense ranking second in the league in run-play frequency, behind only the Patriots. Jackson can smash this number in one attempt.Alex MorettoDalton Schultz over 3.5 receptions (-105)It's safe to assume the Cowboys will be playing the bulk of this game from behind. Andy Dalton has a wealth of options demanding targets, which can make receiving props volatile for this club, but one guy I feel incredibly safe with at a reasonably low number is Dalton Schultz.Baltimore can bring pressure and Dallas struggles in pass protection, which could lead to a lot of quick passes from Dalton to his security blanket at tight end. In the three games Dalton has started - and finished - this season, Schultz has 13 catches on 16 targets, including at least four receptions in each of them.Schultz has a really high catch to target ratio due to how close most of his targets are to the line of scrimmage, so expect him to get some looks again here against a Ravens team that's surrendered 15 catches to tight ends in the last two weeks alone.C Jackson CowartCowboys team total under 17.5 (-120)I don't know what to expect from Baltimore's offense in Jackson's first game back from the COVID-19 list. Frankly, neither do you. But what we do know is this Ravens defense is legit, ranking third in average points allowed (19.5) and fifth in opposing yards per play (5.2).The Cowboys have struggled to find any rhythm on offense with their rotating cast of quarterbacks. Outside of a 31-point outburst against a leaky Vikings defense, Dallas has averaged 11.4 points since Dak Prescott's injury and scored fewer than 17 points in four of those six games without Prescott.Another X-factor here? Fumbles. Nobody has lost more fumbles than the Cowboys (13), while the Ravens lead the league in forced fumbles (21) and rank second in takeaways off of fumbles (11). Nothing stalls an offense like turnovers and I'd be surprised to see Dallas avoid them on Tuesday.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. 10 takeaways from Week 13
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines the significance of those events moving forward.Oh, wow, the Giants Abbie Parr / Getty Images Sport / GettySix of the New York Giants' first seven losses were by 10 points or less. To note that after Week 8 - back when New York was 1-7 - would have been a bit like saying it was almost a bad team instead of merely an awful one that plays hard. But the Giants have since won four in a row, including Week 13's huge road game against the Seattle Seahawks - Colt McCoy's first NFL victory in six years - so maybe it's time to start taking them seriously. The most encouraging aspect for the Giants was how physical they were, especially on defense. New York sacked Russell Wilson five times, and Seattle was just 4-for-13 on third down. Defensive tackle Leonard Williams had 2.5 sacks, including a huge one on third-and-10 in the last minute, just after the Seahawks crossed midfield. Cornerback Isaac Yiadom and safety Jabrill Peppers made big plays in coverage in the red zone. The former knocked away a pass on fourth-and-1 after Wilson was chased into a bad throw by linebacker Carter Coughlin, who was all over the field.Make no mistake: The Giants earned this win, which was the first this season for anyone in the NFC East against a team with a winning record. At 5-7, New York is alone in first place in the NFC East. The Washington Football Team can pull even with a win Monday at the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers, but the Giants possess the tiebreaker after beating Washington twice. The way this season has gone in that division, it suddenly feels like the Giants have a stranglehold on things.QB controversy in Philly Dylan Buell / Getty Images Sport / GettyBy the third quarter, with the Philadelphia Eagles down 20-3 at the Green Bay Packers and on their way to a defeat that would drop them to 3-8-1, head coach Doug Pederson made the decision to bench Carson Wentz for rookie Jalen Hurts. So, for the first time since Nick Foles left town after the 2018 season, Philly has itself a big ol' quarterback controversy again. It almost feels like the universe is properly aligned.Pederson wouldn't say whether Wentz or Hurts will start when the Eagles host the New Orleans Saints next week, but it's a disaster that it's even reached this point. The Eagles gave Wentz a massive contract extension just 18 months ago, and the structure of that deal makes it prohibitive for them to move on from him anytime soon. But the franchise did use a second-round pick on Hurts back in April, and here we are. It's easy to second-guess the wisdom of selecting Hurts, but at the time it seemed like a sound use of draft capital in a league in which quarterbacks have so much value as a position - backups included, especially given Wentz's history of injuries. It's doubtful anyone in the organization figured Wentz would become this bad this quickly, and it's clear the front office thought too highly of much of the rest of the roster. Now there's no easy solution.Saints clinch Kevin C. Cox / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Saints beat the Atlanta Falcons to win their ninth in a row and become the first team in the league to secure a playoff spot. New Orleans has a three-game lead in the NFC South with four to play - and it possesses the tiebreaker advantage over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to boot. The race is all but over: one more win or one Bucs loss gives the Saints the division title.New Orleans won again with Taysom Hill starting in place of the injured Drew Brees, and it's now 8-0 without the future Hall of Famer during the last two seasons. Hill averaged just 19.5 pass attempts in his first two starts, but he threw the ball 37 times against the Falcons, completing 73% for 232 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He also rushed 14 times for 83 yards, though he got most of that on a 43-yard scramble in the first quarter.Hill has beaten the 4-8 Falcons twice and a Denver Broncos team that had to start a practice-squad wideout at quarterback on 24 hours' notice, so the jury is still out when it comes to his abilities at the position. Hill's expected points added per play (EPA/play) in those three starts has been just 0.09, minus-0.49, and 0.14, according to Ben Baldwin's database - figures that would put him in the bottom third of the league over the course of a season. For now, however, being 3-0 as Brees' replacement is all that matters.Browns finally win a big one Andy Lyons / Getty Images Sport / GettyIt's been easy to prematurely overhype the Cleveland Browns. And though the Browns haven't actually clinched anything other than their first winning season in 13 years, they did make a rather emphatic statement by beating the Tennessee Titans on the road. The final score wound up being within a touchdown, but this one wasn't that close. Cleveland led 38-7 at halftime, with quarterback Baker Mayfield playing out of his mind, in large part because he was pressured on just one of his 25 first-half pass attempts:
Jets fire Gregg Williams
The New York Jets have fired defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, according to Eric Allen of the team's official site. The termination comes just one day after Williams' questionable play call resulted in the Las Vegas Raiders' game-winning touchdown, costing New York an opportunity for its first win of the season. With a four-point lead in the final seconds, Williams sent an all-out blitz at Derek Carr. The Raiders quarterback avoided the rush and found Henry Ruggs streaking into the end zone. The decision baffled multiple players on both sides.Head coach Adam Gase said he decided to fire Williams due to the play call."I obviously wasn't happy about that call. That was a heartbreaking way for our guys to lose a game," Gase said, according to NFL Network's Kim Jones. "We can't have that happen."

Carolina Panthers wide receivers DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel are among eight players who have been added to the team's COVID-19 reserve group, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Moore tested positive, Rapoport reports, while Samuel is one of several who were in close contact with him.Other notable players put on the reserve list include Derrick Brown, Zach Kerr, Shaq Thompson, Greg Little, and Michael Palardy. Practice squad receiver Ishmael Hyman will join them too.Two Panthers players tested positive, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The club closed its facility for Monday and Tuesday.Players added to the reserve/COVID-19 list either tested positive or were deemed a close contact of an infected person.Moore leads the Panthers in receiving yards (924) and receiving touchdowns (four). His yardage total also ranks ninth in the league. The Panthers placed rookie defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos and practice squad defensive tackle Bruce Hector on the reserve/COVID-19 list last week. Report: Head coaching change not imminent for Chargers
No change at head coach is imminent for the Los Angeles Chargers after Sunday's franchise-record 45-0 loss to the New England Patriots, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Chargers organization has a "tremendous amount of respect" for head coach Anthony Lynn and would rather evaluate his performance at the end of the season, according to Rapoport. The blowout, which dropped L.A. to 3-9, was the biggest shutout defeat in franchise history, topping the previous record of 41-0 in losses to the Boston Patriots (1961) and Atlanta Falcons (1973).The 51-year-old Lynn described it as "the worst football game" he'd ever been a part of as a coach or a player, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic. "It's not acceptable," he added postgame Sunday.Lynn also said, "I expect to be the coach of this team tomorrow."The team hired Lynn ahead of the 2017 season. He went 9-7 in his first campaign and 12-4 in 2018. However, the Chargers have struggled to find success of late, finishing 5-11 last season, and they're unlikely to make the playoffs this year. The Chargers will attempt to bounce back Sunday when they host the Atlanta Falcons.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Man arrested for break-in at Brady's Massachusetts mansion
Police arrested a man Monday who they say broke into a Massachusetts mansion owned by Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and his wife, Gisele Bundchen, according to The Associated Press. No one was home at the time of the break-in, and the man was found lying on a couch in the basement, Brookline police said. Officers responded to the home around 6 a.m. after a security company reported an intruder. The former New England Patriots star moved to Florida this past offseason after ending a 20-year stint with the AFC East club but still owns the Massachusetts mansion, which is currently for sale.Zanini Cineus, described by police as a 34-year-old homeless man, is facing charges of breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony, attempted larceny, and trespassing, according to Monica Madeja and Marc Fortier of NBC10 Boston.Cineus was charged last year with stealing a $10,000 signed Brady jersey from the Patriots Hall of Fame. He was apprehended while wearing the jersey under a jacket near Gillette Stadium.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Panthers hopeful McCaffrey can return vs. Broncos
Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey seems to be trending toward a return.Head coach Matt Rhule said Monday that he is "hopeful" McCaffrey will suit up Sunday against the Denver Broncos, according to team reporter Bill Voth.McCaffrey has been sidelined since injuring his shoulder in Week 9 and has played just three games this season. The Panthers' facility is currently closed due to COVID-19 concerns, but Rhule noted McCaffrey would have likely practiced Monday had it remained open, according to The Athletic's Joe Person.Coming off his first Pro Bowl season, McCaffrey has carried the football just 59 times this year and has struggled to get going. The 24-year-old is averaging 3.8 yards per carry.Rhule is also hopeful to get cornerback Donte Jackson back this week. Jackson hasn't played since Week 10 and has grabbed three interceptions in 2020.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

The Vikings fell to the Cowboys as a seven-point favorite, should have lost to the Panthers the following week, and needed overtime to beat the Jaguars at home last Sunday. Those teams were 8-26 entering Week 13, but the Vikings finished with a combined plus-1 scoring margin. The Buccaneers represent a significant step-up in competition, as they rank No. 3 in total DVOA defense, No. 2 in explosive rush rate, and No. 1 in yards per carry. There's been nothing fluky about it, either: Tampa's endured the sixth-toughest schedule against opposing offenses. The Vikings want to feed Dalvin Cook out of the backfield and set up play-action off of it, but if they can't run, they'll become one-dimensional. If the Buccaneers can turn this into Kirk Cousins versus Tom Brady, there isn't much more that needs to be said about Tampa Bay's advantage. The Buccaneers are No. 6 in DVOA offense and have no shortage of weapons to test the Vikings' young defense. It'll be the best unit that Minnesota's faced since Week 8 (Packers, No. 2 in DVOA offense). Minnesota's allowed an average of 30 points in five games against current top-10 DVOA offenses this season.Tampa Bay has lost two straight, but this is a cheap buy on a legitimate contender. The Bucaneers have also been perfect in the bounce-back role in 2020, covering all four games following a loss. This should be a convincing win for Brady and the Bucs. Report: Giants 'very optimistic' Jones will return in Week 14
The New York Giants are "very optimistic" quarterback Daniel Jones will return from his hamstring injury in Week 14 against the Arizona Cardinals, a source told SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.Jones sat out Sunday as the Giants picked up a 17-12 victory over the Seattle Seahawks to extend their winning streak to four games. New York sits atop the NFC East with a 5-7 record.Head coach Joe Judge said Monday that Jones will have "every opportunity" to show he's ready to start in Week 14, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Thanks to an accelerated recovery, Jones was apparently closer to facing the Seahawks than the Giants initially anticipated, according to Vacchiano. The sophomore was a limited participant in practice Friday after missing the previous two days of work with the ailment.Jones has thrown for 2,335 yards with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions over 11 appearances in 2020. He tossed 24 touchdowns against 12 picks as a rookie last season.Colt McCoy started against Seattle in Jones' place, completing 13 of 22 pass attempts for 105 yards with one touchdown and one interception.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Rams, Chargers not expected to relocate due to COVID-19 concerns
The San Francisco 49ers were required to find a new home stadium due to county restrictions, but the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers will likely not face similar circumstances.Los Angeles County will reportedly not match the measures taken by Santa Clara County, which barred contact sports, allowing the Rams and Chargers to play at their respective home stadiums for the extended future, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Santa Clara placed restrictions on contact sports due to COVID-19 concerns, forcing San Francisco to relocate to Arizona.Settling in Arizona has placed the 49ers in a tough position since the team is not allowed to interact off the field.
Pederson mum on starting QB after benching Wentz for rookie Hurts
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson didn't commit to a starting quarterback for Week 14 after benching Carson Wentz for rookie Jalen Hurts in Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers."You've got to let me get through this game," he said following the contest, according to The Athletic's Zach Berman. He added: "There's a lot of things I'm going to consider and evaluate before anything is decided."Hurts took over with the Eagles trailing 20-3 and seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. He engineered a late charge, but the Packers emerged victorious, 30-16.The second-round pick led an entire six-play drive and completed a 34-yard deep ball to Jalen Reagor on his first throw.Hurts finished the day 5-for-12 for 109 yards, a 32-yard touchdown pass to Greg Ward, and an interception."At the time, I just felt like where we were as an offense, we needed a spark," Pederson said.Calls for the Eagles to bench Wentz grew louder in recent weeks as his struggles have continued."I didn't know what the plan was fully," Wentz said. "I was just told (Hurts) was going in for the next play, next series. Obviously, that's frustrating as a competitor and just the personality that I have. I want to be the guy out there, but it is what it is."Wentz went 6-for-15 for 79 yards and was sacked four times before being benched against the Packers. He entered the game leading the league with 15 interceptions. He also leads the league with 46 sacks taken. The 3-8-1 Eagles are not only mired in a quarterback controversy, but head coach Doug Pederson's coaching future is also in doubt. It was reported earlier Sunday that there's no guarantee Pederson will remain with the team next season barring a drastic turnaround to end the current campaign.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Bills-49ers betting trends and player props
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section. It was only a few weeks ago the 49ers (-1, 47.5) looked dead in the water amid a rash of injuries. Yet bettors have targeted last year's NFC champions in a prime-time spot against the Bills, who are surging against the spread ahead of this matchup. Here are our favorite trends, props, and bets for Monday night.Betting trendsFor a while, it looked like the Bills' early-season magic was a flash in the pan, as a four-game ATS losing streak tanked bettors who'd bought into this team. Buffalo has gone 3-0 ATS since, winning twice outright and losing to the Cardinals on a Hail Mary in the final seconds.Compare that to the 49ers, who lost three straight ATS before last week's outright win over the Rams as six-point underdogs. Now they're favored for the first time since Week 5, when the Dolphins blew out San Francisco by 26 points in the Niners' second consecutive loss as chalk.Neither team has fared well in prime time as of late - the 49ers are 1-3 ATS in their previous four, while the Bills are 1-4-2 ATS in their last seven. This is still a solid spot for Buffalo, which is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 as a road underdog. San Francisco has gone 0-3 ATS this year as home chalk and 6-21-2 ATS in its last 29 tries. The Bills have been one of the best over teams on the year, posting the second-best mark (8-3) in the NFL, while the 49ers are riding a 4-1-1 under run. Does this prime-time spot suggest one way or the other? The under is 24-11-1 in the last 36 Monday games, including 9-5-1 this season.Player propsNick Mullens over 246.5 passing yards (-110)Mullens hasn't exactly been impressive in his three starts since Jimmy Garoppolo went on injured reserve. He's thrown more interceptions (four) than touchdowns (two) and has a passer rating below 90 in each. But he's been put to work, logging at least 247 passing yards in all three starts and posting 238 yards in Week 8 despite playing fewer than half his team's snaps. Now he faces a Bills defense that's allowed at least 274 yards to eight of their 11 opponents this year. If Buffalo can build an early lead in this one and force Mullens into a favorable game script, this number won't be an issue.Josh Allen over 29.5 rushing yards (-112)The 49ers' rush defense looks like a middle-of-the-pack unit on the surface, but you'll see a major split in production allowed if you break it down. San Francisco entered Week 13 allowing the fourth-fewest rushing yards per game to opposing running backs (72), yet they've allowed 31 yards per game to opposing QBs, most in the NFL.Allen has averaged 37.2 rushing yards per game in his career and has picked up at least 30 yards on the ground in each of the last two weeks. Expect the Bills to scheme Allen into the run game to take advantage of a favorable matchup against an otherwise stout run defense.Best betBills +1It's rarely wise to go against sharp money, which ushered this line from an opening number of Bills -2.5 to the current mark of 49ers -1. I think oddsmakers got it right the first time. Home-field advantage is essentially moot without fans and with the Niners moving into their new home in Arizona, so this number suggests San Francisco is a better team on a somewhat-neutral field. There's very little to support that, from point differential and turnover margin to advanced stats and on-field results. Buffalo checks all the boxes, and it checks the box here for me as an underdog in a very winnable spot.C Jackson Cowart is a betting writer for theScore. Best bets for Washington-Pittsburgh: Tough test for Roethlisberger, Steelers
Find line reports, best bets, and subscribe to push notifications in the Betting News section.A huge Monday doubleheader gets underway in Pittsburgh as the undefeated Steelers host a Washington team with eyes on first place in the NFC East. Here are our best bets for the game.Alex KolodziejBen Roethlisberger's longest completion under 35.5 yardsRoethlisberger hasn't connected on a lot of big plays this season. His longest pass since an 84-yard dart to Chase Claypool in Week 2 went for 46 yards. Let's go under again Monday.Roethlisberger isn't even trying to hit a home run at this point. Big Ben's averaging just 5.2 yards per attempt, the lowest of his career by a wide margin. The veteran quarterback has failed to post a pass of 36 yards or more in four of the last six games despite playing units that rank No. 21, 26, 27, and 31 in DVOA pass defense over that stretch.Washington's No. 4 in the league in yards per completion, No. 5 in the NFL in DVOA defense, and No. 9 in explosive pass rate allowed. This is a pretty solid matchup for its secondary.Alex MorettoOver 4.5 sacksPittsburgh and Washington are first and second in the NFL in sacks with 41 and 36, respectively. Washington's defensive front is loaded with talent and has been improving each week, registering 20 sacks in its last five games. The visitors will get their licks in on Roethlisberger, who's hobbled by a knee injury. The Steelers have allowed the fewest sacks in the NFL this season, but they've faced very few teams who've had success rushing the passer. The Browns (11th), Giants (12th), and Ravens (13th) - in the teams' first contest - all sacked Roethlisberger twice. Washington's second-ranked pass rush will pose the toughest test yet.Meanwhile, Washington has allowed 35 sacks this season. Only two clubs have allowed more. In three games against teams with top-10 pass rushes, Washington has surrendered 15 sacks. Three feels like the absolute floor for the Steelers here, while Washington will add at least a couple of its own. I expect this to fly over the number.C Jackson CowartWashington +7I've been on the Washington betting train for weeks now, and I love the value here. Since getting blown out by the Rams in Week 5, this team is 4-1-1 against the spread, outscoring opponents by almost nine points per game and holding five of six teams to 23 points or less. The Steelers have been dominant in their own right, though they've struggled to put away teams outside of the lowest tier. Washington is certainly better than a bottom-five squad, and its fourth-ranked defense should keep this one close enough to stay within the number.Copyright © 2020 Score Media Ventures Inc. Raiders couldn't believe Jets blitzed on game-winning TD
The Las Vegas Raiders are as surprised as anyone at the New York Jets' defensive alignment on the game-winning play Sunday. The Raiders trailed 28-24 with 13 seconds left in the game and had the ball on the Jets' 46-yard line. Rather than protect against a touchdown, the only thing that could beat them, the Jets dialed up a blitz and left the Raiders' receivers in single coverage. The result was a game-winning touchdown pass from Derek Carr to Henry Ruggs III.
Jets' Maye baffled by fatal blitz on Raiders: 'It's gotta be a better call'
Marcus Maye struggled to make sense of the New York Jets' strategy Sunday after an all-out blitz at the end of the game backfired and cost them a win against the Las Vegas Raiders."It's gotta be a better call," the safety told reporters, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini. With a four-point lead in the final seconds, the Jets sent the house at Derek Carr in an attempt to force the ball out of his hands before a receiver could get to the end zone.Carr managed to slide up in the pocket and avoid the rush, giving him time to uncork a 46-yard dart to Henry Ruggs, who got behind rookie corner Lamar Jackson."We have to execute, but you have to help us out at the same time," Maye said, via The Athletic's Connor Hughes. The Jets became the first team in the NFL this season to send eight or more pass-rushers at a quarterback in the last 30 seconds of a game. They also remain the only winless club in the league.
