NFL preseason Week 4 odds, angles, best bets
For all intents and purposes, the NFL preseason is over in Week 4. Starters are shelved, game plans are stripped, and backups fight for their lives one final time. The good news is that using our preseason betting tips, we've gone 8-2 with our best bets this year, including a perfect 3-0 in Week 3. Here are our picks for Week 4, featuring three underdogs in strong situational spots.Miami Dolphins at New Orleans Saints (-3.5), total: 36.5At this point in the preseason, players are motivated by one of two things: earning a roster spot or winning a starting job. Miami quarterbacks Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen fall firmly into the latter category.New head coach Brian Flores says the competition between the two hasn't been decided, meaning Thursday's exhibition showing could sway his choice. On the other side, Sean Payton has a history of placing little stock in Week 4, with a league-worst 2-11 record straight up.The 'Fins will already be playing two of the best quarterbacks of the week, and with both playing for their jobs, this is an easy buy.Pick: Miami +3.5New York Giants at New England Patriots (-1.5), total: 35Last week, we suggested backing New York quarterback Daniel Jones as a road underdog amid his torrid stretch. Sure enough, he went 9-for-11 for 141 yards in an outright win over Cincinnati. The Giants are 3-0 this preseason with Jones playing well in all three games, yet the rookie is again getting points despite earning the starting nod for the first time. He's 25-for-30 for 369 yards and two touchdowns this preseason. Expect another strong showing as he tries to wrestle the starting job away from Eli Manning.Pick: Giants +1.5Oakland Raiders at Seattle Seahawks (-2.5), total: 33.5Neither team in the Marshawn Lynch Bowl has a clear talent advantage, with both quarterback battles decided and most starters sidelined. Instead, coaching may be enough to swing the result for the road underdog. For whatever reason, Jon Gruden excels in the games that don't matter. The Raiders coach is 10-1 in Week 1 preseason games and 7-1 in Week 4. And this year, his backups are fighting not only for their jobs, but for national exposure thanks to the presence of HBO's "Hard Knocks" at Raiders camp.Pete Carroll is a preseason wizard in his own right, but he can't match Gruden's record in the games that matter the least. Take the points here.Pick: Raiders +2.5Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Oakley unveils tinted visors as part of new NFL deal
Tinted visors will make a comeback in the NFL this season.Oakley announced Tuesday that the company has inked a four-year partnership with the NFL to become an official on-field partner and licensee. The partnership will give all players the option to wear Oakley's Prizm Clear shields during games, which have a slight color tint to "help optimize detail recognition in the football environment," according to the league. The NFL banned tinted visors in 1998 for safety reasons but made medical exceptions."We really just got excited about a brand that's so endemic to sports, but also one that's a leader in their category from an optical standpoint," Nana-Yaw Asamoah, the NFL's vice president of business development, told Jonathan Jones of The MMQB. "We've had rules around visors and what players are allowed to wear on the field, but we haven't had any relationships there. Through conversations what became uncovered was that from both a performance and safety standpoint, there was a lot more that could be done in this space and working with a brand like Oakley could really take us to the next level on that."To coincide with Tuesday's announcement, Oakley released a short film featuring Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. Mahomes became the first NFL player to sign with Oakley earlier this year.(Photos courtesy: Oakley)Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Best bets to win the Super Bowl
With the start of the NFL regular season right around the corner, our sports betting staff gives its best bets to win this year's Super Bowl.Philadelphia Eagles (14-1) - Alex KolodziejThe Eagles at 14-1 pique my interest quite a bit, considering they're the most talented team in the NFC. Philadelphia won nine games last season while ranking No. 5 in man-games lost to injury and now has one of the easiest schedules in the league (.477 opponent win percentage in 2018).Expect the Eagles to revert back to league average - or better - in 2019. There are very few flaws on the roster, and if quarterback Carson Wentz stays healthy, they will be the class of the NFC. There's some excellent value on Philly to win the NFC East at -112 and the Super Bowl price is even more attractive.Minnesota Vikings (20-1) - Alex MorettoOK, 2018 was a bit of a trainwreck for the Vikings, but this remains one of the NFL's most talented rosters. Mike Zimmer's defense is always among the league's best, and there's no shortage of weapons for Kirk Cousins on offense. Cousins will spend a lot less time on his back behind a much-improved offensive line, and new offensive advisor Gary Kubiak will take the pressure off his quarterback by pounding the rock with a healthy Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison, the rookie back the team can't stop raving about. The Vikings fixed the line, added pieces on offense, and brought back Anthony Barr on defense, but their Super Bowl odds moved from 16-1 to 20-1. Don't overreact to a disappointing 2018. The Vikings have all the pieces to win a Super Bowl this season and you can get them at a bargain price.Los Angeles Rams (12-1) - C Jackson CowartI love that Vikings pick, and they're probably the best value on the board. Among the favorites, though, have we all forgotten about the Rams? They opened as the 6-1 title favorite ahead of last year's Super Bowl berth but are now 12-1, tied with three other teams for the third-shortest odds. These are the same Rams who finished with Pro Football Focus' top-ranked offense in 2018 - over the second-ranked Chiefs - and third in defense, seeming like the NFL's "next great team."Don't buy into a Super Bowl hangover for the reigning NFC champs. While the names have changed on defense, the talent is still there for a title run. At 12-1, there's too much value to ignore.Baltimore Ravens (40-1) - Thomas CasaleGoing further down the oddsboard, the Ravens offer the best value of any team to win the Super Bowl this year at 40-1. That's pretty good for a club that will likely finish among the top five in both rushing offense and total defense.Division rivals the Cleveland Browns are 9-1 to win the AFC and 18-1 to win the Super Bowl, and all that hype has created value with the Ravens in the futures market. Baltimore has one of the deepest, most talented rosters in the AFC, yet seven teams have shorter odds to win the conference than the Ravens, who are tied with the Oakland Raiders at 20-1.When looking at Super Bowl futures, you want a team with a legitimate chance to qualify for the playoffs and the talent to make a run once it gets there. Because of its defense and physical style of play, Baltimore is one of the few teams that can compete with the New England Patriots in the AFC. If quarterback Lamar Jackson becomes even an average passer, the Ravens will be a top contender in the conference. Give me 40-1 with the Ravens all day.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Redskins' Gruden expects Reed to be cleared for Week 1
Despite being placed in concussion protocol after last week's preseason win, Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed appears on track to be available for Week 1."We're quite confident that Jordan will be fine," Redskins head coach Jay Gruden told reporters Monday, according to ESPN's John Keim.Reed left last week's game against the Atlanta Falcons after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit. Gruden said Reed started developing concussion symptoms at halftime after initially remaining in the game. The 29-year-old has a lengthy injury history since entering the league, including six documented concussions and multiple knee, hamstring, and toe ailments, among others. He's never suited up for a full 16-game campaign in six NFL seasons.Still, Reed's potential return will benefit Washington's passing attack after Case Keenum was named the team's Week 1 starting quarterback.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Gronkowski admits he could return to NFL, but 'not in the foreseeable future'
Rob Gronkowski won't completely rule out an NFL comeback, but a return to the field apparently isn't likely anytime soon."Physically, I can do it. Mentally, desire-wise, I can't." Gronkowski said at a CBD Medic press conference in New York City, according to MMQB's Albert Breer. The former New England Patriots tight end suffered through numerous injuries during his NFL career. He did, however, note his feelings could change if he improves."That'll be the time. It may be never. But you know me ... " he said, laughing."I want to be clear to my fans. I needed to recover," he added, per Sports Insider's Scott Davis. "I was not in a good place. Football was bringing me down ... I am very satisfied with where I am in life now."Gronkowski's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said in March he wouldn't be surprised if the tight end returns to football at some point. The 30-year-old retired nearly two months after New England's Super Bowl LIII win and nine seasons with the franchise.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: NFL owners pushing for expanded season in next CBA
NFL owners are continuing to push for an expanded season during negotiations for the next collective bargaining agreement, sources told ESPN's Dan Graziano, who added that there hasn't been much progress in talks to date.Meanwhile, the players are focused on increasing their share of the league's revenue pool, according to Graziano. The owners have reportedly indicated that they're not interested in negotiating revenue splits without a discussion about adding games to the season.Official proposals have yet to be submitted by the owners' side, though the group has reportedly considered the idea of a 17- or 18-game regular season, or adding an extra round to the playoffs. The two parties are scheduled to meet again Tuesday in Chicago, marking the second straight week of face-to-face discussions. The schedule for further talks is unclear and could depend on how much progress is made.A number of owners have expressed a desire to have a new CBA agreement in place prior the start of the 2019 season, although Graziano claims they're now less optimistic with the opening game just nine days away.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. USWNT star Carli Lloyd received offer from NFL team to kick in preseason
It seems the NFL nearly had its first-ever female player.United States soccer star Carli Lloyd was approached by multiple NFL clubs following her viral kick while visiting the Philadelphia Eagles, and one team was even willing to put her straight onto its roster for the upcoming preseason game, Lloyd's trainer told FOX Sports' Martin Rogers."Today, she got another call from another NFL team," James Galanis said Monday. "The one that called today, I don't want to say who it is, was willing to put her on the roster for their next (game). They were willing to put her on the roster."She was told (she could) play on Thursday, the NFL game, but she is playing Thursday with the national team, so that was the conflict."Lloyd nailed a 55-yard kick at the Eagles' practice facility, sparking speculation that a future in football could be possible.
Report: Patriots' Andrews hospitalized with blood clots, season at risk
New England Patriots center David Andrews was reportedly hospitalized with blood clots in his lungs, sources told Jeff Howe of The Athletic. The starter is expected to miss significant time, and his entire season could be in jeopardy, Howe reports. He was apparently released from hospital Monday after undergoing treatment, a source told Jim McBride of the Boston Globe.Andrews has played in 46 of 48 regular-season games since beating out Bryan Stork for the full-time role in 2016. He's started all of New England's playoff games during the team's three straight trips to the Super Bowl.If Andrews is sidelined, the Patriots will likely turn to Ted Karras, who has appeared in 45 games (five starts) in three seasons as the team's go-to option behind the starting interior offensive line. The potential loss would be a major blow to a unit that's already set to start a new left tackle in Isaiah Wynn.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Redskins looking to trade Doctson before season opener
The Washington Redskins are believed to be done with former first-round receiver Josh Doctson and would reportedly like to trade him before the start of the regular season, a source told Ben Standig of The Athletic. The Redskins didn't take up the fifth-year option in Doctson's contract, meaning 2019 will be the final season of his rookie contract. The 22nd overall pick of the 2016 draft has missed 15 games due to injury in his career and has caught just over half of his targets during the past two seasons. He had 532 yards and two touchdowns in 2018 and was expected to be in line for a starting job this season. However, Doctson is apparently behind at least Paul Richardson, Trey Quinn, and training camp rookie standout Terry McLaurin in the Redskins' receiver pecking order, according to JP Finlay of NBC Sports.
Falcons aiming to extend Julio Jones before start of season
The Atlanta Falcons have yet to sign Julio Jones to a new megadeal, but the team is hoping negotiations will be completed by Week 1."We'll have to let things take their course," Falcons owner Arthur Blank told D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I know that we are definitely in serious negotiations. It's our goal and their goal as well to get it done before the start of the season."The Falcons are set to begin the regular season Sept. 8 on the road against the Minnesota Vikings.Atlanta general manager Thomas Dimitroff said in early August that he believed Jones "should be" the league's highest-paid receiver, adding that he wasn't worried about the protracted talks for a new contract. While Blank acknowledged negotiations have stretched on further than the Falcons would've liked, he emphasized that he never wants to see the All-Pro wideout in another team's uniform."I've said this publicly and privately to Julio and Julio has said the same thing to me, both privately and publicly," Blank said. "We expect Julio to be a Falcon for life and we have no reason to think that's going to change at all."The negotiations continue to move along in a positive way. It's a big contract and it's complex and what have you. It takes a little more time than we'd like. Probably a little more time than he would like, but I know we are in a good place."The New Orleans Saints pushed the ceiling of the receiver market by giving Michael Thomas a reported five-year, $100-million extension with $61 million in guarantees at the end of July.Jones has accrued the second-most receiving yards in the league since being drafted No. 6 in the 2011 draft and is likely to set a new record for receiver contracts whenever he puts pen to paper.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Rodgers: Leak of Luck's retirement, crowd reaction was 'disgusting'
Aaron Rodgers is disappointed by the way Andrew Luck's retirement played out.In a Monday interview with Mad Dog Sports Radio, the Green Bay Packers quarterback criticized the Indianapolis Colts crowd for booing Luck as he left the field Saturday and the manner in which the story was leaked."Surprise was obviously the first emotion. He's a young player. He's had a really, really good career," Rodgers said of his reaction to Luck's retirement. "But I think the second is a little disgust, maybe, at the way that it was handled. Him getting booed, the word leaking out the way that it did, I thought that was a little disgusting because here's a guy who's making a quality-of-life decision."And he's given a lot to the game. ... He's not a 15-year vet, but he's put himself through a ton just to get back on the field when you think (of) the injuries he's had over the last three or four years."While Luck stood on the sidelines of Indianapolis' home preseason game Saturday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the quarterback had told the Colts he was retiring and planned to formally announce it with a press conference Sunday. Luck was then booed by the crowd as he left the field.Luck confirmed the report postgame and described retiring as "the hardest decision of my life."The 29-year-old spent much of the summer dealing with a lingering calf injury that had recently turned into a high-ankle issue. He said that injuries had robbed him of his love for the game, and he didn't want to continue playing if he didn't feel capable of fully committing himself.Rodgers said Luck should be "championed and appreciated" for deciding to stand aside instead of potentially going on injured reserve and retaining his salary."I think what he did was actually very unselfish," Rodgers said. "Does he not start the season? He could be on IR, and then he's cashing a paycheck from the Colts without playing."But instead he's making the decision now so they can move forward with Jacoby (Brissett), and he's making a decision that's for his own quality of life and happiness, and I salute him for that. And I enjoyed competing against him. He's a hell of a player, and I'm happy for whatever is next with Andrew."- With h/t to Sports Illustrated Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL futures odds: Which teams benefit most from Andrew Luck's retirement?
Two days after Andrew Luck stunned the NFL by announcing his retirement at age 29, the NFL futures market is just beginning to settle down. The Indianapolis Colts predictably took a massive hit from Luck's sudden departure. The Colts were 12-1 to win the Super Bowl before the news; their odds moved to 30-1 on Saturday night and sat at 60-1 by Monday.Indy opened at 20-1 in January and was one of the most-bet teams in Las Vegas before the Luck news. With the star quarterback stepping away, here are some other teams bettors could target and whose Super Bowl odds tightened.Jacksonville Jaguars (40-1 to 25-1)With Luck gone, the AFC South favorite predictably saw a bump in its futures price. Somewhat surprisingly, though, the Jaguars - who finished last in 2018 in a crowded division - are the ones with the best odds in the AFC South to win the Super Bowl and conference title.Jacksonville and Houston are division co-favorites at 2-1, though Nick Foles and Co. have the sixth-shortest AFC odds at 12-1 and are 25-1 to win it all. With a competent quarterback, stout run game, and potentially lethal defense, this year's Jags team has some promising similarities to 2017's AFC runner-up squad.Houston Texans (40-1 to 30-1)Houston was neck and neck with Jacksonville across the futures odds board a week ago, so it's a bit surprising to see the Texans trail their division rival in Super Bowl odds (30-1) and AFC title odds (15-1) as of Monday.Oddsmakers don't often factor running backs into futures odds - especially not pedestrian ones - but Lamar Miller tearing his ACL minutes before the Luck news may discourage bettors from buying up Houston. An already shaky offensive line will put enormous pressure on a thin running back depth chart, and Deshaun Watson may have to put on more of a heroic performance than he did in his 2018 Pro Bowl season.Tennessee Titans (80-1 to 50-1)Yes, yes, the odds moving for all the teams in the AFC South shouldn't come as a surprise. But the Titans' movement is notable because the Colts' demise helps Jacksonville's and Houston's Super Bowl chances much more than Tennessee's.The Titans did go from 6-1 to 13-4 (+325) to win the AFC South, which is likely Tennessee's best shot at the playoffs with the AFC West and AFC North boasting multiple playoff-worthy squads. Yet, if you didn't like the Titans' chances to leapfrog the Texans or Jaguars before Saturday, you're likely no more enthused, even with the Colts out of the picture. The value is slipping away here.Los Angeles Chargers (18-1 to 14-1)Los Angeles sat one spot behind Indy on the futures odds board before Saturday, so it's natural to see the Bolts slide into the seventh-favorite spot formerly occupied by the Colts. Indy's slip matters specifically for the Chargers, who now have a clear path to the top wild-card spot - which could mean a road game against the AFC South winner to open the playoffs.Los Angeles is built to be a title contender - which has seemingly been the case for years - and a Melvin Gordon return would make this squad even more dangerous offensively. Even with tighter odds, it's worth grabbing L.A. before Gordon's return to get ahead of any action on the team's Super Bowl and AFC odds.Pittsburgh Steelers (20-1 to 18-1)In theory, the Steelers' playoff odds were boosted with Indy slipping out of the race, though Pittsburgh hasn't exactly had a stellar offseason that would suggest shorter than 20-1 title odds. We've already discussed the under potential for this year's Steelers team, and they'll have to stave off Cleveland (18-1 to win the Super Bowl) and Baltimore (40-1) from within the division. If you didn't like Pittsburgh at 20-1, there's little reason to jump at 18-1. Grab one of the other AFC North teams whose odds remained steady and have as good a chance to win it all.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Brissett learned of Luck's retirement a day early: 'I was shocked'
Andrew Luck told his replacement about his plan to retire on Friday, a day before the rest of the world found out."I was shocked," Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett, formerly Luck's backup, told reporters on Monday.Luck announced his decision on Saturday night after struggling with injuries for the last four years. The news leaked during the Colts' preseason game against the Chicago Bears as Luck stood with teammates, including Brissett, on the sideline, creating a surreal scene in Indianapolis."He was smiling at the end and that's what helped me gain clarity and understanding of the situation," Brissett said of his conversation with Luck. "I wish him the best, and he knows that."Brissett acknowledged he was aware of Luck's injury-related frustrations, but the pivot didn't know those feelings would prompt a change at quarterback."You know a lot, but you don't know everything about somebody," he said.

Warning: Story contains coarse languageFormer fullback Le'Ron McClain released a series of alarming tweets Saturday, asking the NFL for help to get his "head checked" while saying he's been going through "dark times."The 34-year-old McClain, who spent seven seasons clearing holes for NFL running backs, also said he needs to share his story of how "my head is crazy and how football did it."He added that the NFL "don't care" and that the league "puts paperwork in our faces and that's it."
Report: Chiefs signing Matt Moore to back up Mahomes after Henne injury
After Kansas City Chiefs backup quarterback Chad Henne suffered a fractured ankle, the team is signing former Miami Dolphins pivot Matt Moore to take over the No. 2 role behind MVP Patrick Mahomes, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Henne was injured in Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Brooke Pryor of the Kansas City Star. He will undergo surgery Tuesday.Moore spent six seasons as the Dolphins' backup QB and started during the 2011 campaign. He did not play in 2018.Chiefs linebacker Breeland Speaks is also scheduled to undergo surgery after suffering an MCL sprain and meniscus injury in the team's Week 2 preseason game.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. GM Ballard won't let Luck retirement end Colts: 'It's our job to find answers'
Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard is determined not to let Andrew Luck's sudden retirement derail the reeling franchise."Just look at history," Ballard told Albert Breer of The MMQB. "It's funny, talking to (assistant GM) Ed (Dodds), John Schneider and Pete Carroll didn't walk in with Russell Wilson in the building."Luck announced his retirement Saturday, citing mental and physical fatigue from his struggles to overcome injuries over the last four years. The former first overall pick walked away from the NFL after seven campaigns, a devastating blow to the Colts two weeks before the regular season.Dodds, meanwhile, spent 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks before joining the Colts, and was a part of the front office that drafted Wilson in the third round. Wilson has since led Seattle to two Super Bowl appearances and one Lombardi Trophy."Ed talked about how they filtered through quarterbacks when they were there, and they found Russell," Ballard said. "It's our job to find answers. We have a lot of confidence, as an organization, as a group, that we'll find ways to win games. And that's what we have to do. That's our job."Indianapolis appeared to have a budding powerhouse in the AFC with Luck set to lead a young, fiscally sound team. Without him, the Colts face a ton of uncertainty. They'll forge ahead with Jacoby Brissett, a free agent in 2020, at quarterback."This is a problem-solving league," said Ballard, who's entering his third year with the Colts. "Problems are presented to your team every day. And it's our job to figure out, scouting, coaching, organizationally, how to solve those problems."Ballard noted head coach Frank Reich will tweak his offense to accommodate Brissett's skill set. The Colts have held Brissett in high regard since they acquired him in 2017, and at one point reportedly turned down a second-round pick for him in a trade proposal."Look, Andrew's a great player, and he's been a great Indianapolis Colt," Ballard said. "I'm not going to duck from that. Andrew means a lot to this organization, a lot to this city. But saying that, I think they all understand what the job at hand is. You deal with adversity and you move forward. You can't get into this mourning period where it affects you and takes your whole season down."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Brady supports Luck's decision to retire
Andrew Luck's surprise retirement Saturday sent shockwaves across the league.Although the decision was booed by fans at the Indianapolis Colts' preseason game and has been criticized publicly by some, it's drawn the support from the majority of active NFL players. Tom Brady joined that chorus Monday."It is his life. Everyone has the right to choose what they want to do," the New England Patriots quarterback said on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show.""He had a great career and was a great player. Everybody wishes they could be healthy all the time. It is a contact sport and he's certainly had his fair share of injuries, so guys retire at different times."The pair of pivots squared off six times and the Patriots went undefeated. In fact, the Colts haven't beaten New England since 2009.While Luck has dealt with numerous serious injuries during his seven-year career, Brady has only missed four games since 2008. The 42-year-old credited a large support system for his run of good health."I think it's everything. There's definitely a physical element. There's definitely an emotional element. I think there is a mental element," he said. "Everything in my view really has to come together for you to be the best version of yourself as a player, and it takes a lot of support."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Colts won't recoup $24.8M owed from Luck
The Indianapolis Colts have reached a financial settlement with Andrew Luck and won't seek any of the money they are owed from the retiring quarterback, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.Overall, the Colts could have recouped $24.8 million - $12.8 million as a pro-rated portion of Luck's signing bonus from his extension in 2016 and another $12 million from roster bonuses he received in March. The two sides reached the settlement late last week, Schefter reported. The gesture would be considered a thank-you to the quarterback for giving up his body for the team over the past seven years.Among the injuries that Luck has sustained since entering the league are a torn abdominal muscle, a lacerated kidney, a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, and most recently calf and ankle issues that he could not shake.Colts owner Jim Irsay estimated that the retirement will cost Luck from earning nearly half a billion dollars in NFL wages."It's a tough thing, look it, he's leaving $450 million on the table potentially," Irsay said.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Gruden tabs Keenum as Redskins starting QB
Veteran quarterback Case Keenum will start under center for the Washington Redskins in Week 1, head coach Jay Gruden announced Sunday.Keenum was battling for the starting job with rookie Dwayne Haskins, the club's first-round pick in 2019."Case has come in here and picked up the offense extremely well, had great confidence and command over the team - they both have," Gruden told reporters. "At the end of the day, I think we have great confidence Case can lead us to a win against Philadelphia."Keenum, who was traded from Denver to Washington in March, started all 16 games for the Broncos last season. Newton out of walking boot, progressing from foot injury
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton shed his walking boot Sunday after sustaining a foot injury Thursday."So far, so good. Every day, he progresses. Every day, it's been positive," Rivera said at his press conference Sunday. "He'll continue to get his treatment and we'll see how he is in the morning."Newton suffered a sprained foot while being tackled in a preseason contest against the New England Patriots. Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said earlier in the week the team remains cautiously optimistic Newton will be ready for the regular-season opener Sept. 8 against the Los Angeles Rams.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Fantasy: Takeaways from Saturday's preseason games
Get ready for your season with theScore's 2019 Fantasy Football Draft Kit and subscribe to push notifications in the NFL Fantasy News section.Every game night during the preseason, theScore gets you caught up on the most important fantasy performances from around the league.Luck's surprise retirementAndy Lyons / Getty Images Sport / GettyAndrew Luck's plan to inform his teammates about his retirement after the Colts' preseason game and then hold a press conference Sunday afternoon to announce it fell through when ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the stunning development Saturday night. For as shocking as the news was, it was even more surprising to see some fans booing Luck as he left the field in Indy. A classless move by those in attendance and one that Luck admitted hurt him when he addressed the media after the game. While many words will be written on Luck's career and his decision to walk away, we're here to break down what it means for fantasy managers, especially those drafting in the coming days. The next update to my rankings will be live on Monday, but until then, let's take a quick look at what this means for the Colts' skill position players.Jacoby Brissett takes over under center and though he's one of the better backups in the league, the drop off from Luck is immense. Brissett himself will be a fringe QB2 in fantasy around the likes of Andy Dalton and Marcus Mariota. It's possible Brissett is more prepared for this moment than we realize, but he'll need to prove that in real games before he can be trusted.Every member of Indy's receiving corps takes a hit, with T.Y. Hilton's value falling at least a full round into the fourth. Devin Funchess becomes nothing more than a touchdown-dependent weekly dart throw, and Parris Campbell's potential rookie breakout is now put on ice.Eric Ebron was already slated for significant regression, especially with a deeper cast of pass-catchers around him, including a healthy Jack Doyle. Brissett's presence lowers the upside of the entire offense, meaning those scoring opportunities Ebron thrived in will be even fewer and farther between. Ebron is a fringe TE1 and Doyle remains a bye-week fill-in at best.Marlon Mack's stock is also negatively impacted. His touchdown ceiling is lowered and there will be less second-half carries due to poor game scripts. However, the Colts still boast one of the top offensive lines in the NFL and Brissett might be willing to dump the ball off to his backs more than Luck would have, which is notable given Mack's increased role in the receiving game during the preseason. Consider Mack a low-end RB2 around the range of Leonard Fournette and Josh Jacobs.Let's hope Brissett can step up and help keep this offense rolling overall. He is facing the fourth-easiest schedule for fantasy quarterbacks in 2019.Miller out for the yearIcon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettySince arriving in Houston, it felt like Lamar Miller always left meat on the bone in terms of his production, and if you don't believe me, just ask anyone who owned him in fantasy.Even so, Miller was set up for another year as a borderline RB2/high-end RB3 given his status as the unquestioned lead back in a prolific offense. On Saturday night, Miller's time in Houston may have come to an end as he suffered what the team fears to be a torn ACL, according to Schefter. We already expected the Texans would move on from the 28-year-old rusher when his contract finished after this season, and now with the injury, that scenario is all but guaranteed.Fortunately, Houston did recently trade for Duke Johnson - a superb change-of-pace back who has always wanted his shot to be a full-time ball carrier. This sounds exactly like Miller, who left the Dolphins for a chance to be a workhorse. We know now that Miller was far more suited for a committee role than a true lead back, as he tended to break down late in seasons. If the Texans attempt to deploy Johnson in a similar fashion, the results will likely be the same.Johnson is an outstanding pass-catching back, but he'll need help carrying the workload. Whether that comes in the form of rookies Damarea Crockett and Karan Higdon or via a free agent like Jay Ajayi remains to be seen. Crockett is the more enticing of the young backs, but adding a veteran could be a smart move. It's also possible the team once again delves into the trade market, though a major deal for a star like Melvin Gordon seems like a long shot. For the time being, Johnson is moving up to Miller's former spot in my rankings, around RB30. If you want to stash one of the rookies, Crockett would be my choice.Instant impressions
Jerry Jones optimistic Cowboys can get Elliott deal done
The NFL regular season is quickly approaching and the Dallas Cowboys remain without Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott.Nonetheless, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is positive the team can come to terms with Elliott, who is currently holding out in search of a new contract."(I'm) optimistic that we can get Zeke's deal done," Jones said, according to Rob Phillips of DallasCowboys.com."I don't know that. I don't know that. But sure, I don't mean to be trite, but the whole premise is based upon getting everybody under contract playing, so that's what we're trying to do here."I don't want to sound like it's not important for him to be here. I think it is important for him to be here or we wouldn't be having everybody be here, everybody getting some work in. Everything about this is important. Everybody does understand it. It's just a question of seeing if it works, but you know, we're going to play football one way or the other. That's the way it works."The Cowboys have one preseason game remaining against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday before they host the New York Giants in the season opener Sept. 8.Elliott did not play in the preseason last year and finished as the league's rushing leader. He opened the campaign with 69 yards on 15 carries in a Week 1 loss to the Carolina Panthers.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Colts GM has faith in backup QB: 'Brissett is a winning football player'
The Indianapolis Colts will turn to Jacoby Brissett to lead them at quarterback for the 2019 season.Following the surprise retirement of Andrew Luck, the team will have to move forward with the next man on the depth chart, and the Colts' brass have faith Brissett can get the job done."We've got a good football team. This is a good football team. We're young, good on both fronts, some good young skill players and a good young quarterback in Jacoby Brissett," general manager Chris Ballard said after Luck's announcement Saturday night, per Jake Arthur of Colts.com."We're not gonna ask Jacoby Brissett to be Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck was a unique, unique player, but Jacoby Brissett is a winning football player in this league. Jacoby Brissett is a rare, rare leader ... That locker room loves Jacoby Brissett. They love him."Brissett joined the Colts via trade from the New England Patriots in September 2017, filling in as the team's starter while Luck continued to rehab a shoulder injury. He performed respectably, throwing for 3,098 yards and 13 touchdowns against seven interceptions, leading to rumors he was coveted elsewhere as a starting QB.The team went 4-12 that year. Yet, upon Luck's return and an influx of talent the following season, the Colts finished 10-6 in 2018. Brissett now gets to take over a team that had division-winning expectations."I think you saw it last year as we went through the season, this is a special guy, man," Ballard said of Brissett. "I'm excited to watch him play."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Colts' Irsay won't rule out Luck returning from retirement
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay paid tribute to Andrew Luck following the quarterback's stunning retirement on Saturday, but he also left the door open for the star pivot to change his mind."I don't rule it out," said Irsay, according to Nate Newell of the Indianapolis Star. Andrew Luck confirms retirement: 'I'm in pain'
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is retiring from the NFL because of mental and physical fatigue, the result of slow recoveries from injuries."For the last four years or so I've been in this cycle of injury, pain, rehab, injury, pain, and rehab, and it's been unceasing and unrelenting, both in-season and offseason," he told reporters after the Colts' preseason game versus the Chicago Bears on Saturday. "I felt stuck in it, and the only way I see out is to no longer play football. It's taken my joy of this game away."An emotional Luck revealed he contemplated retirement for two weeks. He spent the last several months dealing with a calf injury that eventually led to an ankle issue, but the Colts had been optimistic Luck would be ready for the regular season."I'm in pain," he said. "Still in pain."
Andrew Luck's retirement sends Colts' futures odds spiraling
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck dropped a bombshell on Saturday, informing the public in a press conference that he's retiring due to mental fatigue. It's an understatement to say the betting markets have been drastically affected. The Colts' win total dropped from 9.5 to 6.5 at FanDuel, while their title odds went from 12-1 to 50-1 at PointsBet, and from 12-1 to 30-1 at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. CG Technology, which shifted the Colts' title odds from 12-1 to 40-1, moved them from 7-1 to 20-1 to win the AFC South. The 29-year-old Stanford product was coming off a huge bounce-back season after posting 4,593 passing yards with 39 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 2018. He led the Colts to a 10-6 finish and a postseason berth. The team's playoff run concluded with a divisional-round loss to the Chiefs.Luck was tied with Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the second-shortest MVP odds at 8-1, behind Patrick Mahomes. He was also given the third-best odds to lead the league in passing yards at 6-1, trailing only Mahomes and Matt Ryan, both at 9-2.Initially a three-point underdog against the Chargers in Week 1, the Colts were immediately moved to +7 in some shops for the opener. CG Technology then posted the Colts as 9.5-point underdogs, tying them with the Bengals as the largest Week 1 dogs.Last season, CG Technology made Luck worth between four and five points to the betting spread, so the 6.5-point move could reflect the public's knee-jerk reaction.Alex Kolodziej is a betting writer for theScore. Jets GM open to dealing high draft picks for 'the right player'
The New York Jets will consider trading significant draft capital if it nets them an impact player, general manager Joe Douglas revealed Saturday."I can't really get into hypotheticals, but I would say if it was the right player, (we'd) certainly entertain it," he told reporters, courtesy of SNY. "We're in the business of making this roster better, and so if the right opportunity presented itself, I certainly wouldn't shut it down."The Jets have several holes they could look to address before the season, particularly on defense. A logical target would be Houston Texans edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, who still hasn't signed his franchise tag and is believed to be on the trade block."I feel like you're narrowing this player down," Douglas laughed when given a description that fits Clowney. "Again, if it was the right player, right situation, we'd consider it."The Jets are equipped with a selection in each of the first five rounds of the 2020 and 2021 drafts.Since being named general manager of the Jets on June 7, Douglas' splashiest acquisition has been center Ryan Kalil, who he lured out of retirement.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Shanahan explains 49ers' Foerster hire
It was reported Friday that the San Francisco 49ers hired former Miami Dolphins offensive line coach Chris Foerster, who resigned after a viral video emerged of him snorting a white powder in 2017, this offseason.Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area about Foerster - who's been with the team since 2018 as a consultant - and his role with the club."We found out about (the video) when the whole world found out about it. When it happened, we were as shocked as anyone, from my wife to anybody," Shanahan said. "It's nothing I'd want to stick up for. These are extremely bad things that I know he's not proud of, and I'm not proud of."Shanahan said Foerster - who worked with the Niners bench boss from 2010-13 with the Washington Redskins - hit rock bottom, entered rehab, and has been in a 12-step program that he attends every day of the week. He also explained that the 49ers hired Foerster as a means of offering him a second chance."We're trying to ease him back in. I understand how big of a problem he did have. I also understand that he's doing in committing to fix that problem. We're trying to give him a chance to get back on track," Shanahan said. "I also understand that people make huge mistakes, and ... he's trying to make amends and he's trying to make it right."The team didn't go public with the hire because Foerster isn't on the coaching staff and doesn't attend games or practices. He filed advanced scouting reports remotely last season. This year, he has a part-time role that includes attending team and position group meetings."He's done that exactly the right way for two years," Shanahan said. "We will see if he continues to do that, and then we will reassess that after this year. If it continues to go well, I think he has a chance to get his life back on track. And that's really all we are trying to do."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Preseason NFL betting takeaways
You either love preseason football because the sport is back, hate the product because it's mostly reserve players, or look at it as another opportunity to bet.We fall into the third category here.Typically viewed as degeneracy, the NFL preseason is actually a perfect four-week window to bet if you have an edge over the market. And although the regular season is a different beast, there are certainly takeaways that can carry over into the year. Here are a handful from a betting perspective.Buccaneers will be another popular over betA subjective take, but don't be surprised if there are more Tampa Bay overs in our top plays of the week this season. There were 12 Buccaneers games last year that closed with a total of 50 or higher. It was certainly warranted, too. Last year's squad, despite the constant flip-flop at starting quarterback, featured a pass-heavy offense (No. 6 in pass play percentage) and a defense that couldn't stop anyone. Now they have head coach Bruce Arians, whose Cardinals from 2013-17 posted the second-most air yards per attempt in the league. After watching the Bucs throw the ball 57 times in Week 1 of the preseason, that was the nail in the coffin. You can expect more of the same in 2019.Don't buy the Giants' passing offenseThe team with the most passing yards so far in the preseason is surprisingly the New York Giants, who are at 891 heading into Saturday. Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones leads the way with 369, along with a pair of touchdowns and zero interceptions. The offense as a whole has been cruising, averaging 29.3 points per game through the first three contests. This is your perfect case of fool's gold. It's tough to imagine New York morphing into an over machine when the games matter. This is an offense that traded away Odell Beckham Jr., lost Corey Coleman to a torn ACL, still has Sterling Shepard sidelined to a fractured thumb, and will be without Golden Tate for the first four games of the season. They also start off the campaign against two of the top defenses from last year - Buffalo and Dallas - and have Minnesota and New England in the first six weeks. But they'll always have the preseason stats, and that counts for something. The Ravens' defense is still legitWhen the Ravens lost Eric Weddle, Terrell Suggs, C.J. Mosley, and Za'Darius Smith from last season's unit, there was cause for concern. Then this happened.
Gruden impressed with Guice's performance in return to action
Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice played in his first game in more than a calendar year. After tearing his ACL in the first preseason contest of his rookie campaign last year, Guice returned to action Thursday and carried the ball 11 times for 44 yards against the Atlanta Falcons. Such a performance made a strong impression on head coach Jay Gruden."It was important to get him the ball. Wanted to give him quite a few touches. Get him some rhythm, a sweat. Get used to hitting the ground, getting hit, tackled, protecting the football," Gruden said, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com."I think it was a productive night for him. Looked like he was decisive with his cuts for the most part, ran with some power at times, moved the pile when there wasn't anything there. I was impressed."Guice's highlight play was a vicious stiff arm delivered to a Falcons cornerback. The 22-year-old relished the opportunity to get back on the field and make the plays he's accustomed to making."It's been a long time, bro," Guice told Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post. "I knew it was something I needed. I needed to get out there, get my feet under me, get some contact to really see where I'm at."Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Report: Dolphins willing to trade veterans, Tunsil not on block
The Miami Dolphins have made several veteran players available in trade discussions entering a rebuilding campaign, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.Miami's brass, however, appears unwilling to trade Laremy Tunsil despite rumors of a deal surfacing Friday, a league source told Jackson.Tunsil's camp was informed there is no truth to reports he's on the trade block.Teams have inquired about the former first-round pick with the belief the Dolphins are willing to trade veterans for draft picks. Though Miami has fielded calls, all offers to date have been turned down.Among the players being made available are safety Reshad Jones and linebacker Kiko Alonso, sources told Jackson. Jones has been the subject of trade rumors since last season.Tunsil, who the Dolphins selected No. 13 overall in 2016, is under contract for $2.1 million in 2019 and had his fifth-year option exercised for the 2020 season. Kitchens: Browns' offense 'not even close to where we want to go'
Freddie Kitchens wasn't pleased with the Cleveland Browns' performance in their preseason tuneup Friday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Without the help of his stars, including Odell Beckham Jr. and Nick Chubb, who both sat out, quarterback Baker Mayfield and the first-team offense struggled to consistently move the ball in a 13-12 loss."It was just a frustrating night all the way around,'' Kitchens said, according to Cleveland.com's May Kay Cabot. "Offensively we didn't execute, not even close to where we want to go."Mayfield completed just 10 of 26 passes for 72 yards and one interception on the night, struggling to connect with starting receivers Rashard Higgins, Jaelen Strong, and Derrick Willies."Those guys are coached to execute," Kitchens said. "Those guys are coached to do their job and we didn't do a very good job of preparing those guys to do their job and they didn't do a good job of doing their job."The execution wasn't there and it had been before. Those guys have played in other games and they performed in practice and they're expected to perform."With a plethora of talent on both sides of the ball, expectations are as high as ever for the Browns entering 2019. Newton's injury forces Week 1's Panthers-Rams off Caesars oddsboard
The Carolina Panthers could be without quarterback Cam Newton for their Week 1 opener against the Los Angeles Rams, and at least one sportsbook pulled the game from its board until his status is confirmed.Carolina is "cautiously optimistic" that Newton can play in the Sept. 8 opener after suffering a "mid-foot sprain" in Thursday's preseason loss to the Patriots, according to The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue. The injury forced Caesars to suspend betting for the contest, with oddsmaker Alan Berg telling theScore on Friday that it would stay off the board until his shop learned more about Newton's Week 1 status. The Westgate LV SuperBook moved the Panthers from +3 (+120) to +3 (+140) against the Rams, with no movement on the 50.5 total.SuperBook Race & Sports manager Derek Wilkinson said most of the money wagered has come in on the Rams. "Not much from the wise guys yet, just public money," Wilkinson said.Newton's injury comes a week after the SuperBook pulled the Colts-Chargers game from its Week 1 board amid concerns of Andrew Luck's health. Luck is still questionable for that contest. If Newton were to sit for Week 1, it would mark the fourth time since 2014 that he's missed at least one game. The 30-year-old quarterback was already coming off shoulder surgery and a lengthy rehab process that had initially put his status for the opener into question. The Panthers are 2-3 ATS and 4-1 to the under in his five missed games since '14, according to Sports Database. They're 42-38-1 ATS (52.5 percent) and 45-34-2 to the over (57 percent) when he plays.Carolina has only faced the Rams once in Newton's previous eight seasons: a 13-10 win in 2016, before Sean McVay took over in Los Angeles.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: Ex-Dolphins coach in scandalous 2017 video hired by 49ers
The former Miami Dolphins assistant who resigned in 2017 after a video showed him snorting a white powdery substance was hired this offseason by the San Francisco 49ers, sources told ESPN's Jenna Laine.Chris Foerster stepped down as the Dolphins' offensive line coach Oct. 9, 2017, and hadn't worked in the NFL since. The 49ers never announced his hiring, nor is he listed on the team's website, but he reportedly helps San Francisco with game-planning.The 2017 viral video saw Foerster using a rolled-up $20 bill to snort the substance prior to a team meeting. He vowed to seek professional help for drug and alcohol addiction after surrendering his post with the Dolphins.Foerster and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan worked together while with the Washington Redskins from 2010-13. Stephen Jones: 'Not a lot of activity' between Cowboys, Elliott
Though he remains optimistic a deal will get done, Dallas Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones said on Friday that contract talks with Ezekiel Elliott have been slow."I don't think we're close because there's not a lot of activity," Jones told 105.3 The Fan.Elliott has spent all of training camp and the preseason in Mexico, where he's training independently while awaiting a new contract.Through a retweet, the two-time Pro Bowler hinted that he wants to become the league's highest-paid running back. However, the Cowboys have been adamant about not resetting the market with any extension given to their core players.
Broncos' Lock could go on IR after spraining thumb
Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio said quarterback Drew Lock could be placed on injured reserve after the 2019 second-round pick injured his thumb in preseason action against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday.Lock was diagnosed with a serious sprain in his right thumb after undergoing an MRI on Tuesday."Obviously because it's his throwing hand and a thumb, that's a pretty serious injury for a quarterback," Fangio said, according to ESPN's Jeff Legwold. "It will be some time before we know exactly where he's at and how much time he would miss."Asked about the possibility of placing Lock on the injured reserve, Fangio added: "Yeah, it could be if we don't think he can play for a while. The bad thing about it is because of the injury he can't do much."If the Missouri product is placed on IR with a designation to return, he'd miss the first eight weeks of the regular season. With the 22-year-old sidelined, Kevin Hogan and Brett Rypien will compete for the backup role behind Joe Flacco.Copyright © 2019 Score Media Ventures Inc.
