MNF best bets: Saints to bash Brady
Each Monday, we'll finish off the week that was in the NFL with a look at value spots in the remaining game - under one condition: You promise not to chase. Whether Sunday provided a boost to the accounts or left a little to be desired, Monday Night Football provides an opportunity to show responsibility in your betting, as there'll always be another wild Sunday to get lost in.On one hand, at 5-6 and 4-8, respectively, this prime-time matchup between the Buccaneers and Saints doesn't have the allure it has had the last few years. On the other hand, somehow Tampa Bay is a division leader, and even stranger, the Saints are a win away from tying the Bucs in the win column before their bye week. With the Bucs set for a trip to the 49ers while the Saints rest up, New Orleans could lead the NFC South in a week's time. Conversely, a loss sends the Saints to 4-9 with no shot at the playoffs. Weird.Saints @ Buccaneers (-3, 41.5)What are we supposed to like about the Buccaneers? It's supposed to be Tom Brady. However, does Todd Bowles know Brady's on the team? Last week, Bowles opted to punt when the Bucs had the ball on the Browns' 37-yard line on fourth-and-2. He opted to not use a timeout with the clock running on what could have been a Bucs game-winning field goal drive. They ended up running out of time, roughly 10 yards short of kicking range. If you're not going to use the GOAT, why buy the farm? The problem for Tampa tonight is that since Brady arrived before the 2020 season, the Bucs have just two wins in six tries against New Orleans, losing to three different quarterbacks that were all below league average in yards per game that season.GAMEBRADY STATSWeek 2 (2022)18/34 190 yds 1 TDWeek 15 (2021)26/58 214 yds 0 TD 2 TOWeek 8 (2021)28/40 375 yds 4 TD 3 TODiv. Round (2020)18/33 199 yds 2 TDWeek 9 (2020)22/38 209 yds 0 TD 3 INTWeek 1 (2020)23/37 239 yds 2 TD 2 INTBrady's averaged just 238 yards per game, an average boosted by one game where the Bucs trailed by two scores in the second half. He also has more turnovers than touchdown passes (10-9). All those games came with a much healthier offensive line. Retirements and injuries - the latest to star tackle Tristan Wirfs - have left the depth chart in shambles. Josh Wells had to come in for Wirfs in the playoffs last year and routinely allowed Eagles pressures. We're supposed to like the Buccaneers' defense. At 24th in the NFL in yards per rush against, though, it's not impossible to string together a drive against them. Vita Vea and Akiem Hicks are both questionable, and even if they start Monday night, it doesn't mean they'll finish. Meanwhile, both starting safeties are doubtful, leaving them vulnerable deep.In Week 2, it was 3-3 through three quarters, but the Saints were without Alvin Kamara, Taysom Hill had just three carries before getting hurt, and Jameis Winston threw three interceptions. New Orleans just got shutout in San Francisco last week, but it's not facing the best defense in the league when it gets into field-goal range this week.If Bowles wants to live life playing for a tie, that might be all the Saints need to at least stay in touch with Tampa, and we'll bet on this one going down to the wire.Pick: Saints +3.5 (-120)Tom Brady under 271.5 passing yardsBrady's thrown for an average of 277.5 yards per game this season, so you can see why his yardage total might be lined where it is. However, Brady's passing yardage total has been lower than this seven times this season, including Week 2 when it was 265.5. Maybe Brady's forced to throw more, getting over this number by volume, but a healthier Saints defense - that held the 49ers to just 4.7 yards per play last week - can execute a game plan that's been successful in the past.Rashid Shaheed longest reception over 9.5 yardsRookie receiver Shaheed got his first look in Week 6, averaging nine snaps for five games and getting on the field for very specific plays. The last two weeks, though, Shaheed's played half of the Saints' snaps. He's getting increasingly worked into New Orleans' offense, and half of his eight catches on the season have gone for 12 or more yards.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Belichick: 'Too hard' to change offensive play-caller midseason
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is pushing back on taking offensive play-caller duties away from Matt Patricia this late in the season."I think we need to do what we're doing better. I don't think at this point making a lot of dramatic changes - it's too hard to do that," Belichick said Monday on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show," according to Mark Daniels of MassLive.Patricia was named the offensive play-caller after being hired as a senior football adviser and offensive line coach in the summer following four seasons as head coach of the Detroit Lions. He has no offensive play-calling experience before this season and has coached on the defensive side of the ball since 2005. New England ranks 20th in points per game this season.Belichick added: "If we can just do consistently what we're doing, I think we'll be alright. But we just haven't been able to have enough consistency. It's not one thing. One time, it's one thing. Next time, it's something else. We just have to play and coach more consistently."The Patriots' offense struggled to move the ball against the Buffalo Bills in Week 13, only racking up 232 yards in the first three quarters.Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne was critical of how the Patriots ran the offense against the Bills."We need to scheme up better," Bourne said after the game, according to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald. "We need to know what they're doing. We need to know what they wanna do on third down. ... They call this, and we call that, and it falls right into what they want."The Patriots play the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football in Week 14.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Key takeaways and analysis from Week 13 in the NFL
Sunday Rundown recaps the most important developments from the day's action and examines their significance moving forward.Jalen's best yet Scott Taetsch / Getty Images Sport / GettyIf Jalen Hurts goes on to win MVP, which is very much on the table with a month remaining in the regular season, Sunday's win over the Titans will be a moment to remember.Philadelphia runs the ball as well as any team in the NFL this year - racking up 363 rushing yards last week against the Packers was as dominant a performance as you'll ever see - but this game was always going to be different. Gaining consistent yards on the ground is next to impossible against an outstanding Tennessee defensive front. The Eagles were evidently well aware of this heading in, as they didn't even feign an interest in establishing the run. It was all about the passing game from the jump, and their quarterback was more than up to the task.Hurts attacked the Titans' secondary throughout the day with a season-high 39 pass attempts, completing 29 for 360 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Factoring in the opponent and just how little the team relied on the run game, this may be the best performance of his young career.More importantly, his showing is yet another major step in what has been a remarkable period of growth for Hurts. To go from a second-round run-first quarterback project to a high-level NFL passer in such a short time is an incredible example of development - credit for which, of course, goes to Hurts himself. But the Eagles are also putting on a clinic on how to support your young signal-caller in this early stage.Philly's most aggressive move was trading for A.J. Brown in the offseason, and the superstar wideout is making Howie Roseman look like more and more of a genius with each passing week. Brown had a revenge game for the ages against the Titans, racking up eight catches for 118 yards and two long touchdowns. The Eagles putting up an explosive passing performance on the heels of their historic run-game output against the Packers is just the latest example of their malleability. Whatever's needed to win a given matchup, this team can do it.That's a championship formula.Bengals better than ever Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyLet's be honest: The Bengals were a bit of a fraudulent Super Bowl team last year. A fun one, no doubt, but Cincinnati probably wasn't even a top 3 club in the AFC in 2021, let alone No. 1.That's exactly why much of the football world was expecting some sort of regression - at least in postseason success - while favoring the likes of the Chiefs, Bills, and even Chargers instead. After all, getting hot at the perfect time two years in a row is extremely unlikely. That logic assumed the Bengals weren't going to evolve year over year. But as we've seen in the last two months, with Sunday's win over the Chiefs providing the latest and most critical confirmation, that's not even remotely the case.Personnel is part of it - particularly on the offensive line. Elsewhere in the starting lineup, this roster is largely the same. The difference, and what's making the Bengals feel like much more of a powerhouse than they were last year, is how the offense is adapting. No longer is this a unit built almost entirely on big plays downfield - it'll take them if you're bold enough to leave superstar receivers one-on-one, as any team with these weapons would - but there's far more to the equation now.Joe Burrow and the Bengals' passing game have expertly navigated their way through some early-season struggles against two-high shells designed to take away their big plays. Slowly but surely, they've become lethal in all other areas of the field, too. Burrow's 286 yards on 25 of 31 passing with two touchdowns, no interceptions, and just one sack made for a flawless performance.Add in an ascending run game, which accounted for 152 yards against the Chiefs despite Joe Mixon's absence, and this may be the league's most balanced attack. No matter what you throw at the Bengals offense, they've got an answer.Cincinnati's defense is on the rise too. After finishing 19th in defensive DVOA last year, the Bengals entered this week ranked 12th before arguably their most impressive performance yet - holding Patrick Mahomes to a season-low 223 passing yards and just one touchdown. To summarize: Don't chalk up the AFC to the Chiefs or Bills just yet. Now 8-4 and winners of four straight, Cincinnati is tied atop the AFC North and just one game back of the conference's No. 1 seed.Other contenders, including the Chiefs, who are now 0-3 against Burrow, should worry about the prospect of the AFC playoffs going through Cincinnati. This is a better team than the one that went to the Super Bowl last year, and it's not even close.49ers D delivers Ezra Shaw / Getty Images Sport / GettySunday's game between the 49ers and Dolphins promised to be the ultimate matchup of elite offense versus elite defense, and it certainly did not disappoint. Miami got its shots in - as you might expect, with such dynamic playmakers in a masterfully designed passing attack - but the top-ranked San Francisco defense had the last laugh. In a fantastic piece for The Ringer last week, Ben Solak wrote that this was going to be a game that was won in the middle of the field. Nobody had been attacking the intermediate middle as well as Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins' offense, while the 49ers' defense takes away that all-important area unlike any other.Fred Warner is the key to it all for San Francisco. While some may have raised an eyebrow at the idea of an off-ball linebacker making $19 million per year, he truly is a unicorn at the position. With two-high defenses making coverage linebackers all the more valuable, he gives the 49ers the ultimate X-factor over the middle.Continuing that level of play against a juggernaut Dolphins offense - and handing Miami its first loss in a game that Tua played in full - is a major statement for San Francisco's defense. Unfortunately, Jimmy Garoppolo's season-ending injury will require them to pull even more weight from here on out.As poised as Brock Purdy was after being forced into action and as much as Kyle Shanahan can scheme things up in a way that is quarterback-friendly, it's just tough to imagine the offense being consistently productive with the seventh-round rookie under center. We know the 49ers' defense is great, but we're about to find out whether the unit has a 2000 Ravens-like ability to drag its team to a Super Bowl.Ravens in trouble Greg Fiume / Getty Images Sport / GettyIf you're looking for a would-be contender to shake things up by falling out of the playoff picture, Baltimore is starting to seem like your best bet.An 8-4 record after eking out a win over Denver gives them some breathing room for the time being, but it's tough to be excited about the way the Ravens have been playing of late. Since their Week 10 bye, they've scored 13 points in a win over the Panthers, lost to the Jaguars, and now, barely beat the Broncos. The issue throughout the uninspiring stretch, and for most of this underwhelming season, has been the offense consistently falling short. Once again having failed to surround their star quarterback with enough playmakers, and doing next to nothing in terms of scheme to create big plays, the Ravens are placing far too much on one player's shoulders. And now, with Lamar Jackson potentially missing time after leaving Sunday's game with a knee injury, an already listless offense is at risk of taking another step back during the most important stretch of the season. The upcoming schedule provides some hope, as matchups with the Steelers, Browns, Falcons, and Steelers again before a regular-season finale against the Bengals isn't exactly the most daunting stretch. But it's certainly a more challenging group of opponents than the one with which Baltimore has struggled in recent weeks - especially without Lamar.Even if the Ravens manage to hang on and come away with one of the last AFC wild-card spots, it feels like the ceiling on any potential postseason run is jarringly low. Even with Lamar, they just don't have the supporting cast or creativity to keep pace with some of the conference's high-powered offenses. That'll set up a fascinating offseason where management will face intense pressure to be aggressive in acquiring some offensive weapons but may not be inclined to spend big with massive contracts for Jackson and Roquan Smith presumably in the works.Staley under pressure Steve Marcus / Getty Images Sport / GettyLast week, we gave Brandon Staley some well-deserved praise for his move to go for two rather than tying up the game late when the Chargers really needed a win. This week, we have to talk about the reasons they're so desperate for those wins in the first place. This was supposed to be the year for L.A. to take that next step. Elite quarterback, great weapons, and a supremely talented defense. On paper, this was a top-five roster in football.Injuries have been a factor, to be fair, but this team still has no business sitting at 6-6 and firmly outside of the playoff picture. That's exactly where the Chargers are following Sunday's loss to the Raiders. The responsibility ultimately falls on Staley. The most intriguing aspect of these Chargers heading into the season was the idea that, after an aggressive offseason, they finally had the pieces to fix the porous run defense that was ultimately the reason they couldn't make the playoffs last year. Somehow, despite Staley's defensive background, that unit is now even worse.L.A. allowed 4.6 yards per carry last season, good for 28th in the league. The Chargers entered this week's action ranked 32nd, giving up 5.4 yards per carry. Josh Jacobs capitalized on the tasty opportunity, helping the Raiders close out their win with 144 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries. The pass defense also had no answer for Davante Adams, allowing the star receiver to go off for 177 yards on eight catches, including two long touchdowns. With the Chargers failing to make the most of Justin Herbert's ability on offense, it feels like a change at offensive coordinator is inevitable. But if Staley's presence is also doing nothing to fix their issues on the other side of the ball despite an offseason geared toward helping him do exactly that, should the changes really stop there? The Chargers are going to be one of the few teams that make sense for Sean Payton when he throws his hat in the ring for coaching vacancies in January. Payton's resume speaks for itself, and he'd have as good a chance as any coach of maximizing Herbert's abilities. Would ownership be aggressive enough to make it happen?Quick slantsCowboys wagon Wesley Hitt / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe Cowboys laid an absolute beating on the Colts on Sunday night. Not the best of competition, but it's not like any of Indy's other three opponents since hiring Jeff Saturday have come even close to this type of blowout. After entering the fourth quarter up 21-19, Dallas decided it was time to stop messing around. Five touchdowns later, the Cowboys had themselves a 54-19 win for their highest-scoring output of the year. Not a bad performance to put together in prime time on the eve of Odell Beckham Jr.'s visit to Dallas. The rich may soon get richer.Eagles run DBack to the Eagles for a minute. Run defense has been one of Philly's few, if any, concerns over an otherwise spectacular 12 games. Unfortunately for the rest of the league, they might be starting to figure that out too. Limiting Derrick Henry to 30 yards on 11 carries is another sign that the mid-November additions of Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph are working out better than anyone could have imagined. And this was with Jordan Davis, the Eagles' best interior run defender, having his snaps limited in his return to the lineup. Philly's defense is starting to peak at the perfect time for a playoff run.Falcons too lateArthur Smith admitted following a loss to the Steelers that everything is on the table regarding a potential quarterback change in Week 14. The Falcons head coach would deserve credit for making such a move if he didn't wait until after his team fell to 5-8 and all but out of the playoff race. Marcus Mariota's limitations as a passer have been evident all season. To not give Desmond Ridder the chance to provide a spark when it actually mattered was a disservice to the team. The third-round rookie is a more talented passer than Mariota, and there's no reason to think he can't offer just as much as a runner. It'll be nice to get a look at Ridder down the stretch, but it shouldn't have taken meaningless games for that to happen.Jets unable to finishThe second game of the Mike White experience didn't exactly lead to the same results, with the Jets falling to the Vikings on the road. The offense didn't have any issues moving the ball, though. White threw for 369 yards on the day, and New York outgained Minnesota by a wide margin of 486-287. The Jets will need to clean things up in and around the red zone to avoid wasting drives and settling for field goals, but there are still some positive signs with this offense. It remains a massive upgrade over whatever it was they were doing with Zach Wilson.Lions rolling Gregory Shamus / Getty Images Sport / GettyDon't look now, but a blowout victory over the Jaguars suddenly gives the Lions wins in four of their last five games. The only defeat over that red-hot stretch was a three-point loss to the Bills on Thanksgiving, and it should also be noted that they gave the Dolphins a hell of a challenge before ultimately taking another close loss the week before this little run began. The offense continues to play at an especially high level, with Jared Goff, for the second time in his career, proving to be an excellent point man for a talented group of playmakers. But the real story of late has been the defense, and that unit continuing to progress, as we saw in the 40-14 drubbing of Jacksonville, would be huge heading into an offseason where Detroit figures to spend big on that side of the ball.Christian Watson dazzlesAfter years of refusing to invest in offensive weapons and drawing some deserved scorn from the football world, the Packers finally got aggressive for a receiver in the draft. And wouldn't you know it, they appear to have landed themselves a superstar. With another two-touchdown performance in a win over the Bears, Christian Watson now has an unbelievable eight scores in his last four games. The second-round rookie was always thought to be something of a project, with his rare athletic gifts giving him limitless upside long-term, but that combination of size and speed is already making him a nightmare for opponents to defend. And if he's only getting started, with the more technical aspects of his game still to come, the sky is the limit.Deshaun's debutDeshaun Watson was predictably rusty in his first NFL start in over 700 days. Despite the luxury of playing his former Texans team and their awful defense, the Browns quarterback only completed 12 of 22 passes for 131 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. With an ineffective passer, Cleveland's offense managed just six points on the day, but Houston's incompetence elsewhere allowed the Browns to find the end zone twice on defense and once on special teams. The last five games will be crucial for Watson to establish some sort of rhythm with the rest of the offensive unit heading into next season.Stat of the week

With Lamar Jackson potentially facing time on the sidelines due to a knee injury, Cincinnati should fancy its chances of jumping the Baltimore Ravens and pushing the Chiefs and Buffalo Bills in the fight for the lone bye.In more good news for the Bills, the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins both failed to keep pace in the AFC East thanks to losses to the Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers, respectively. Eagles' Brown relishes win over Titans: 'It's been personal since the trade'
Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown was looking forward to today's game against the Tennessee Titans - his first against his former team."This one meant a lot to me," Brown said after the game, according to John Clark of NBCS Philadelphia. "I'd be lying to you to say I didn't circle this game."The Titans traded Brown to the Eagles in April after the two sides failed to agree to a long-term contract extension."To be honest, it's been personal since the trade," Brown said, according to Zach Berman of The Athletic. "I stated that's where I wanted to be."The 25-year-old spent three seasons in Tennessee, solidifying himself as one of the NFL's best wide receivers. He had 2,995 yards and 24 touchdowns in 43 games with the Titans. The veteran wideout was spectacular in the Eagles' 35-10 win over the Titans, hauling in eight catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns.Brown caught a 40-yard pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts early in the second quarter that was initially ruled a touchdown but was later called back. After the play, Brown took a towel and started hitting the goalpost."Today, I'm gonna give you this whooping. But I still love you," Brown said when asked about the meaning behind the celebration, according to Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94WIP.Hurts dominated the Titans' defense on Sunday, throwing for 380 yards and three touchdowns - two of them to Brown. After the game, Hurts was vocal about how much Brown means to him and the team."I think the whole world knew what it meant to him," Hurts said, according to Shorr-Parks. "I'm happy he put on a show. He's a special player and good friend."The Eagles are now 11-1 and will take on the New York Giants in Week 14.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Jackson out 'days or weeks' after injuring knee vs. Broncos
The Baltimore Ravens announced quarterback Lamar Jackson left Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos with a knee injury.Tyler Huntley took over for Jackson, who went to the locker room shortly after exiting late in the first quarter. Jackson appeared to sustain the injury when Broncos defensive end Jonathan Cooper sacked him.Head coach John Harbaugh said postgame that Jackson's injury is not season-ending."We'll get more tests tomorrow," Harbaugh said, according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN.Harbaugh added, "If it's going to be a number, it will be days or weeks."Huntley led a game-winning drive to secure the 10-9 victory, running in the final touchdown with 28 seconds left.Heading into Sunday, Jackson had led the Ravens to four wins in their last five games, totaling five touchdowns during that stretch. He had three completions for 11 yards before exiting versus Denver.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Report: NFL teams looking into Michigan's Harbaugh as coaching candidate
Multiple NFL teams have been doing background work on Michigan's Jim Harbaugh as a potential head coaching candidate, sources told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport.Harbaugh has been frequently linked to an NFL return in recent years. He interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings last season but later said he was finished pursuing NFL interest and described the process as a "one-time thing."The 58-year-old coach has led Michigan to two consecutive Big Ten championships. The Wolverines recorded 12 wins in 2021 before putting together a 13-0 record this season. Harbaugh posted a 74-24 mark with the program since joining in 2015.He spent four seasons as the San Francisco 49ers head coach prior to joining Michigan. He won at least 11 games and earned a playoff berth in three of his four campaigns in charge. Harbaugh guided the 49ers to the Super Bowl in the 2012 season, but they were defeated by the Baltimore Ravens.Harbaugh is under contract with Michigan through the 2026 season after inking a five-year extension in February.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Report: 49ers, Garoppolo open to 2023 return
The San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo are open to continuing their partnership in 2023, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.Garoppolo has filled in admirably for starter Trey Lance, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. The veteran has the 49ers atop the NFC West after recording a 6-3 record as a starter, including four straight wins. He completed just over 67% of his passes for 16 touchdowns to four interceptions. The 49ers and Garoppolo initially planned to go their separate ways following the conclusion of the 2021 campaign. However, the quarterback underwent offseason shoulder surgery, which left the franchise unable to find a trade partner.Garoppolo signed a restructured one-year contract that contained a no-tag clause prior to the start of the 2022 campaign. The 31-year-old started 56 games over six seasons for the 49ers, throwing for 82 touchdowns to 42 picks. San Francisco reached the Super Bowl in 2019 and the NFC Championship Game last season with Garoppolo under center.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Rams place Stafford on IR with neck injury
The Los Angeles Rams placed quarterback Matthew Stafford on injured reserve Saturday, the team announced. With six weeks left in the season and the 3-8 Rams out of the playoff picture, Stafford could miss the remainder of the campaign. Players placed on injured reserve must remain sidelined for at least four weeks. The 34-year-old missed last Sunday's game after landing on the concussion protocol. He cleared the protocol this week, but Rams head coach Sean McVay ruled Stafford out of Sunday's contest against the Seattle Seahawks with a neck injury, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com.Stafford was also in the concussion protocol when he missed Los Angeles' Week 10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The one-time Pro Bowler, who helped the Rams win the Super Bowl last season in his first year with the team, passed for only 2,087 yards and 10 touchdowns against eight interceptions through nine appearances in 2022.John Wolford will make his second start of the season versus the Seahawks. Bryce Perkins replaced Stafford last week in the 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.Stafford joined L.A. in a trade from the Detroit Lions, who own the Rams' first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Detroit has a 49.7% chance of earning a top-five selection next year, according to ESPN.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Week 13 player props: QBs under the microscope
It was another frustrating Sunday for our supplemental wagers, as we went 4-6 thanks to Michael Carter's early injury in a game where he was destined for a decent workload. We couldn't have pegged Tua Tagovailoa's usage any better, predicting he wouldn't be needed for much of the second half. The problem was the Texans were all too willing to step aside for Dolphins receivers as Tagovailoa had almost 300 yards in the first half alone.Justin Fields over 68.5 rushing yardsIt's hard to argue with the Bears starting Fields when he doesn't have an injury designation going into this game, and without that, we have to assume he'll be his usual self - breaking contain and getting loose with his legs. With at least 12 carries and 82 yards in five of Chicago's last six games, we might be getting some value on the worry that Fields' shoulder will hamper his legs, which doesn't make a ton of sense.Mike White over 22.5 pass completionsWhite has some of the best short-passing metrics in the league. Meanwhile, the Vikings are conceding a second-worst 69.3% opponent pass completion rate. The Vikings' pass defense invites the Jets to throw on them, but they might be so bad that White doesn't need to throw more than the 33.5 attempts he's lined for. A 23-for-31 day isn't out of the question.Marcus Mariota longest rush over 13.5 yardsMariota has had a long rush of more than 13.5 yards in six of 12 games this season - a 50-50 rate. However, the long runs have come against the top-tier defenses that the Falcons have played (Saints, Buccaneers, 49ers, Commanders, and Panthers twice). This suggests that a good pass rush leads Mariota to escape the pocket or keep on a read-option play more than he would against the passive defenses he's seen. The Steelers fall into the former category, with the sixth-fewest yards per rush against.Gus Edwards over 55.5 rushing yardsEdwards returned from injury for a second time last week and was immediately trusted with 16 carries, though he only ran for 3.3 yards per carry (YPC). In his first return from injury this season, he had a 1.5 YPC jump between the first and second games back despite going from the Browns' shaky run defense to the Bucs' strong front. Edwards goes from the Jaguars (ninth in opponent YPC) to the Broncos (19th) this week.Deshaun Watson under 236.5 passing yardsIf you want to believe that Watson is in midseason form - up to the same speed as everyone else on the field - you're welcome to, but I'll need to see it first. The Browns have no choice but to play him, but they don't have to use him excessively in his first game since the 2020 season. Expect a lot of the ground game against the Texans' vulnerable run defense, resulting in a modest stat line for Watson.Daniel Jones over 18.5 pass completionsJones likes playing Washington. Even at the worst of times for the Giants, he's averaged 21.6 completions on 31.6 attempts for 230 yards per game against the Commanders, going 4-1 since joining. Each number would result in the over on his main prop totals for Sunday, but let's lock in on completions. Brian Daboll should have a plan for Jones to get the ball out quickly against Washington's front four, and those short passes add up.D'Andre Swift over 50.5 rushing + receiving yards The last time Swift was absent from the injury report was Week 1. He had 18 touches for 175 yards. Since then, it's been five carries here and a handful of receptions there. However, last week, Swift had a season-high eight targets despite a matchup with Bills' cover linebacker Matt Milano, and after a week-and-a-half off, he finally came off the injury report this week. A bigger role, explosive talent, and a lower number mean there's some value on Swift.Chigoziem Okonkwo over 11.5 total receiving yardsOkonkwo's first five games this season: five receptions, eight targets, 52 yards. His four games since: six receptions, 12 targets, 155 yards. The explosively athletic tight end had a season high in targets last week, and "only" had 35 yards - his lowest total in those last four games. Enough said.Trent Sherfield over 22.5 receiving yardsAfter cashing a ticket with Sherfield three weeks ago, I wish I had a good reason why I wasn't back on the Dolphins' third receiver last week, but he comes into this contest against San Francisco with four straight games of over 22.5 receiving yards. In three of those, he topped this total on one catch.Patrick Mahomes under 308.5 passing yardsIn two matchups last season, Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo made the adjustments to slow the Chiefs' offense, holding them to three points in each second half. That resulted in Patrick Mahomes throwing for almost identical stat lines of 26-for-35 for 259 yards and 26-for-39 for 275 yards despite hot starts. This season, the Chiefs have modified their offense to be OK with that modest production by improving their run game, which might play right into Cincinnati's hands.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. The AFC East race is historically deep and could go down to the wire
The ongoing AFC East playoff race is unique. This quartet of teams has never been so competitive from top to bottom. The division's shaken out predictably since 2002, when the NFL realigned into its current form and Tom Brady became New England's undisputed starter. Brady quarterbacked the Patriots to the division title in every season but one that he was healthy. The Bills emerged as the big dog as soon as he split with coach Bill Belichick, and the Jets' and Dolphins' long playoff droughts endure. But times have changed: Mike McDaniel's Dolphins have kept pace with the Bills for three months, and the Jets look rejuvenated under Robert Saleh. The Patriots are at .500 despite losing to Buffalo on Thursday night. Three wins separate the first and worst teams as December dawns.Great defenses abound in this neck of the league. Josh Allen raises Buffalo's ceiling, but Matt Milano, Tremaine Edmunds, and Jordan Poyer have helped the Bills' star-studded defense weather a rash of injuries. Uneven quarterbacking hasn't sunk New York or New England because neither team gives up many points. Miami is the outlier: Tua Tagovailoa's breakout, in conjunction with the arrival of Tyreek Hill, is what makes the Dolphins fearsome. This is shaping up to be the first season in the 32-team era to produce three AFC East playoff clubs. The addition of a seventh berth in each conference means all four squads have a shot to qualify. The division could sweep the AFC wild-card spots if the 7-4 Bengals and 6-5 Chargers both falter. The stretch run should be riveting. By opponent win percentage, the AFC East teams and Cincinnati have five of the 11 toughest remaining schedules, according to Tankathon. New England and Buffalo face the Bengals in back-to-back weeks and segue straight into big divisional showdowns.Tight races are few and far between this year. The division champ is all but decided in the AFC South (Titans), AFC West (Chiefs), and NFC North (Vikings). Brady's Buccaneers are 5-6 yet lead the listless NFC South. Only the NFC East is comparably exciting: All four teams there are in line to reach the postseason.Unlike the Giants and Commanders in the NFC East, every AFC East team ranks top 10 league-wide in point differential, per Pro Football Reference. The whole division has what it takes to win a playoff game. That was never the case when the Patriots reigned.Consider these AFC East facts:
Fields off injury report, on track to return vs. Packers
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields is off the injury report and in line to return for Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers.Fields missed Chicago's 31-10 defeat to the New York Jets in Week 12 due to a shoulder injury. The signal-caller was a full participant in practice Thursday and Friday. The Bears turned to Trevor Siemian in Field's absence last Sunday. Siemian finished with a 75.2 passer rating after throwing for 179 yards with one touchdown and an interception.Siemian, who managed to play despite sustaining an oblique injury pregame, is set to undergo season-ending surgery, head coach Matt Eberflus said Friday, according to ESPN's Courtney Cronin. Nathan Peterman will serve as the backup quarterback.Fields demonstrated his ability as a dual-threat quarterback prior to injuring his shoulder in the team's Week 11 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The 23-year-old threw for six touchdowns to two interceptions and rushed for 410 yards over his last three appearances. The Bears (3-9) and Packers (4-8) hold the bottom two spots of the NFC North coming into their Week 13 meeting.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Jaguars' Etienne 'good to go' vs. Lions
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne is "good to go" for this Sunday's matchup with the Detroit Lions, head coach Doug Pederson told reporters Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.Etienne exited the team's 28-27 victory over the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday with a foot injury and did not return.Following the win, Pederson said Etienne could've returned, but the team wanted to play it safe. The 23-year-old runner missed the entirety of his rookie season with a Lisfranc injury but has been productive in his first healthy season. Entering Week 13, Etienne has 728 rushing yards, 202 receiving yards, and four touchdowns.Etienne will look to add to these totals against a Lions defense allowing 414.5 yards per game, the worst mark in the NFL.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 13 best bets: Spread, moneyline, total, and teaser
That's more like it! There was nothing nefarious in Week 12 other than the usual bet on a total going awry. We'll never know whether the Titans would've pushed the game over on their last drive since they opted to rough the Bengals' kicker - effectively ending the game with a first down on the penalty. We'll even take a little luck with the Jaguars' comeback win over the Ravens to cash our upset of the week.BET TYPELAST WEEKSEASON (units)ATS trio2-0-1 (+2)19-12-5 (+5.8)ML upset+1.66-6 (+5.2)Totals-1.13-9 (-6.9)Teasers+16-6 (-1.2)TOTAL+3.5+2.9Best bets ATSJets +3Here are Mac Jones' stats since returning from his high ankle sprain.OPPONENTYARDSSTATS@ NYJ194TD / INT / 6 sacksvs. IND147TD / 4 sacksvs. NYJ2466 sacks@ MIN3822 TD / 3 sacksvs. BUF195TD / 1 sackThe only success the Patriots' offense managed came against the Vikings' defense, which probably isn't a great sign for Minnesota. In a small sample size over two seasons, Mike White's efficiency is among the best in the league for quarterbacks with five games played. That wasn't an outlier for the Vikings, either, as they're last in the NFL in opponents' yards per pass attempt. The Jets are on the other end of the spectrum - they have the fifth-best pass defense based on yards per attempt and sack percentage. Vikings left tackle Christian Darrisaw reportedly has no timetable for his return from concussion, which will make protecting Kirk Cousins a problem.Ravens -8.5You're worried about the Ravens holding a lead. However, the offenses that pulled off comebacks on Baltimore were ranked second, third, 11th, and 24th in yards per play this season. The Giants - the lowest ranked of the bunch - relied on a 13-yard drive after a Lamar Jackson interception. Jackson's been picked off just once since. The Broncos' offense is worse than that of any of the teams Baltimore lost to, and the team fits the mold of the Saints, Panthers, Patriots, and early-season Jets - opposition the Ravens beat by 10-plus points. For all the praise Denver's defense earned, it's only forced 11 turnovers this season, so you shouldn't expect short fields for Russell Wilson.Lions +1Dan Campbell gets a hard time for playing the clock suboptimally in the loss to the Bills, but we shouldn't beat up on the Lions for falling just short of a fourth straight win. Their defense is slowly improving and their top corner, Jeff Okudah, is expected back this week.Trevor Lawrence was impressive in the fourth quarter against the Ravens, but there was a reason the Jaguars twice trailed late in the contest. We always look to fade teams off a "jump-and-hug" win, so expect the Jaguars to come back to earth with a hard time keeping up with the Lions' offense.Moneyline upset of the weekOur defined parameter for this section is underdogs paying at least +150.Dolphins +170In college football, you can spend weeks preparing for a big game knowing you don't need to do anything special to beat some of the cupcakes on the schedule. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has had the Browns at home, a bye week, and the Texans at home as his assignments leading up to a game against his former team.My guess is he's dedicated some extra time and saved a few pages of the playbook for the 49ers. San Francisco, meanwhile, was preoccupied with a rivalry game and two primetime contests before it scored just 13 points in a win over New Orleans last Sunday.Miami looked great against the bad defenses mentioned above, but it also didn't have to try for more than five of eight quarters in those games, so the stats could be even more impressive. Four quarters of facing Tua Tagovailoa and Co. will be the Niners' toughest test since their defeat to the Chiefs five weeks ago.Best total betChiefs / Bengals under 53.5 pointsIn Week 17 last season, the Chiefs scored four touchdowns in the first half at Cincinnati. Lou Anarumo's defense made some halftime adjustments, and Kansas City scored just three points in the second half. In the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs scored three touchdowns in the first half, but again managed just a field goal in the second half of another comeback win for the Bengals that stayed under the total. The Chiefs changed their offense to account for its vulnerability, but that came at the cost of its explosiveness. They've also dispersed their capital to strengthen their defense. Expect a feeling-out process in a game that stays under a relatively high total.Best 6-point teaserRavens -2.5 / Giants +8.5If we like the Ravens to win comfortably, we really like them to win by a field goal. As for the Giants, they're a prime teaser leg in a low-scoring game with the Commanders. Washington has mostly had the better team over recent years, but the Giants are 4-1 in matchups Daniel Jones started, with a one-point loss the lone blemish.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. NFL Week 13 round-robin underdog moneyline parlay
One play away. That was the theme for the round-robin underdog moneyline parlay in Week 12, but before feeling hard done by, we have to remember that it goes both ways. The Jaguars and Steelers won, but the Falcons failed despite a first-and-goal on the Commanders' 2-yard line, the Cardinals gave up a game-winning two-point conversion, and don't get me started on how close the Lions came to pulling off the biggest Thanksgiving Day upset in decades.Of course, the Jags also won on a two-point conversion, and if Jeff Saturday knew how timeouts worked, we might have been on the wrong side of the one play that almost every NFL game inevitably comes down to. Isn't that the point, though? If the vast majority of NFL contests come down to that one last high-leverage play, and we're getting plus-money for what seems like a 50-50 proposition, we're making valuable bets. A 4-1 week for our picks against the spread and a 37-20-3 overall record confirms that. How it worksWe parlay five underdogs we like against the spread in 10 different three-team parlays. Using every combination of a three-team parlay is called a round robin. We'll use a total of 1.1 units to make 11 different bets: 10 three-team parlays and one five-team parlay, each for .1 units. You'll likely double your money if three teams pull off the upset. If four teams win, you're connecting on four separate parlays and will be very pleased with the return. If all five teams win, you'll be diving into a silo of gold doubloons like a young Scrooge McDuck.Who to playTexans +260The Texans have blown up the RR MLP a few times this season, so I promise this will be their last appearance, win or lose. This is the shot that must be taken. With the return to the NFL of the Texans' former quarterback, this has to be Houston's Super Bowl and a beneficial home-field environment given Deshaun Watson's exit. Moreover, he hasn't played a regular-season NFL game since the end of the 2020 season. He saw preseason action and wasn't very good, so why would we expect him to be in midseason form?Big picture: Houston can win this game without risking its chance of getting the first overall pick. As for the 4-7 Browns, what have they done to warrant fear? The defense is 28th in opponent passer rating and 26th in yards per rush against. Look for the last inspired performance from the Texans in a game that means more to them than it does to most of Cleveland's roster.Jets +135This game comes down to just how good the Jets might be with controlled quarterback play. Mike White seemed to stabilize the position with his quick reads, and accurate, unspectacular pass attempts. Then again, it was just the Bears. However, White gets to face nearly as porous of a defense in Minnesota, with far better throwing conditions indoors. If the Patriots can move the ball down the field with ease against the Vikings, the Jets can too. Plus, we know what New York's defense brings to the table.Titans +190The Titans as sizeable underdogs? Count me in! Mike Vrabel is 16-10 straight up as an underdog of more than a field goal, according to Action Network. The Eagles won't be able to run for the roughly 3 million yards that they did against the Packers on Sunday night, and Tennessee's pass defense has gotten better throughout the season. Offensively, you know it will be a steady diet of Derrick Henry, but the loss of CJ Gardner-Johnson makes throwing the ball at the Eagles less dangerous, and Treylon Burks has added a much-needed deep threat for Ryan Tannehill.Dolphins +170Tua Tagovailoa and Mike McDaniel should do a better job of converting scoring opportunities against the 49ers than the Saints did last week. It would be impossible not to. San Francisco's defense is getting a lot of credit for holding off Andy Dalton, Colt McCoy, the banged-up Chargers, and the Rams' anemic offense in the last four second halves, but the Dolphins should be a different story. Meanwhile, there has to be a little alarm in San Francisco that the Niners' only touchdown last week came on a deflected pass that could have gone awry - like that flattering 13-0 victory as a whole.Saints +160Speaking of the Saints, we could be giving more credit to a defense that's getting healthier. As much as we hope Marshon Lattimore returns Monday to do his number on Mike Evans, even if he can't go, we'll still play on New Orleans to continue its torment of Tom Brady. Plus, we've officially entered the "fade Todd Bowles as a favorite" portion of the program. His mega-conservative decision-making and lack of basic strategizing leave the Buccaneers vulnerable to almost any team in the league looking to pull off an upset. Here's how the odds look this week:PARLAYODDS (Approx.)NYJ+HOU+TEN+2300NYJ+HOU+MIA+2200NYJ+HOU+NO+2200NYJ+TEN+MIA+1700NYJ+TEN+NO+1700NYJ+MIA+NO+1600HOU+TEN+MIA+1900HOU+TEN+NO+2600HOU+MIA+NO+2500TEN+MIA+NO+1900NYJ+HOU+TEN+MIA+NO+17100Who are your five underdogs for a football betting lottery ticket?Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. Arrest warrant issued for Antonio Brown for misdemeanor battery
Police in Tampa have issued an arrest warrant for former Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Brown on a misdemeanor battery charge, according to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe. The charge stems from a domestic battery incident on Nov. 28, according to ESPN's Jenna Laine.Tampa police told Laine that Brown had an argument with a woman, which became physical, and Brown threw a shoe at her.The woman, who's the mother of four of Brown's kids, said Brown locked her out of her house in Tampa, tossed out her belongings, and threatened to shoot her, according to court documents obtained by Aaron Mesmer of FOX 13 News.On Nov. 29, a judge denied a petition for a temporary risk protection order to prevent Brown from possessing firearms if he was considered a threat to himself or others, Laine notes. The 34-year-old Brown pleaded no contest to felony battery charges and received two years of probation in June 2020. The probation was terminated one year early for good behavior.A seven-time Pro Bowler, Brown hasn't played this year after appearing in 15 regular-season games with the Buccaneers over the last two seasons. The Bucs released him in January after he walked off the field in the third quarter of a game against the New York Jets.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Von Miller placed on IR, will miss at least 4 games
The Buffalo Bills placed pass-rusher Von Miller on injured reserve Thursday due to a knee injury he sustained on Thanksgiving Day against the Detroit Lions.Miller will be forced to miss at least four games before he can return, making him eligible to come back for a Week 17 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.Bills general manager Brandon Beane told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the team hopes to have Miller back for a late-season run."We've been assessing Von this week and seeing how he is, and we don't want to rush him back. This gives us a chance to go ahead and count tonight's game and three more on injured reserve," Beane said Thursday. The 33-year-old has been one of Buffalo's key contributors on defense, notching eight sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and 12 quarterback hits in 11 games.A.J. Epenesa, Shaq Lawson, and Boogie Basham will likely see more playing time in Miller's absence.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.

Kentucky's Levis declares for NFL draft, undecided about bowl game
Kentucky quarterback Will Levis is entering the 2023 NFL Draft, he announced Wednesday via Twitter Spaces. The senior signal-caller has not decided whether he'll play in Kentucky's bowl game this season. The Madison, Connecticut, native generated plenty of preseason buzz as a potential top quarterback prospect ahead of the 2022 season. He dazzled scouts and fans, throwing 2,812 yards and 24 touchdowns while adding 376 rushing yards and nine scores on the ground.Levis has experienced a decline in production from last year as he has dealt with injuries and inconsistency within the Wildcats' offense. He has tallied 2,406 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 65.4% of his pass attempts. The six-foot-three, 232-pound passer began his collegiate career with Penn State from 2018-2020.Levis is expected to be one of the more intriguing passing prospects in next spring's draft.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Vikings' Peterson rips Kyler Murray: He only cares about himself
Minnesota Vikings cornerback Patrick Peterson took a shot at his former Arizona Cardinals teammate Kyler Murray.During his "All Things Covered" podcast with Bryant McFadden, Peterson said Wednesday that Murray "doesn't care" about his coach, Kliff Kingsbury, considering how the quarterback calls him out in the media."Kyler Murray don't care about nobody but Kyler Murray," said Peterson, who played with Murray for two seasons in Arizona before signing with the Vikings in 2021.Murray responded to Peterson Wednesday evening on social media, pushing back on his comments."This isn't true," Murray said. "You on some weird shit. You got my number, if you really felt like this as a 'big bro' or 'mentor,' you supposed to call me and tell me, not drag me so your podcast can grow."After the Cardinals' 25-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Murray voiced his displeasure with Kingsbury's offense."Schematically ... we were kinda f----d," Murray said postgame, according to Bo Brack of PHNX Sports.Murray signed a five-year, $230.5-million contract extension with Arizona in July. With the Cardinals owning a 4-8 record this season, Peterson said he believes Kingsbury will take the fall for the Cardinals' struggles."Ain't no maybe, he will," Peterson said when asked if Arizona will use Kingsbury as a scapegoat.Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim each signed a six-year contract extension in March."The crazy thing about it is the guy who hired (Kingsbury) will still have a job," Peterson said about Keim. The Cardinals are on a bye in Week 13.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Hackett: Report of Wilson losing locker room support is 'all gossip'
Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett insisted Wednesday that the locker room remains firmly behind quarterback Russell Wilson despite the team's struggles.A report from Tom Pelissero of NFL Network on Tuesday suggested Wilson lost the support of some people in the locker room, while faith in Hackett remained strong amid speculation about his future."It's all gossip. … We have a fantastic locker room," Hackett said Wednesday, according to team reporter Aric DiLalla. "When you look at a guy like Russ, he's unbelievable. He works - I've never seen somebody work that hard."I've never seen somebody try to embrace a team like he has while he's (been) here, just from everything that he does, from walkthroughs to helping to how he is in the community. Russ is awesome. We just need to do better as a team. It's that simple. All of that stuff, it is what it is. Chiefs DB Reid ready to stop Bengals' Higgins: 'Gonna lock him down'
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins has dominated several defensive backs since entering the NFL, but Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid doesn't think Higgins will do much in their matchup on Sunday."He's a very talented receiver, more of a finesse type of guy, not the best blocker," Reid said Wednesday, per PJ Green of FOX4 News. "I'm gonna lock him down."Higgins has put on a show since the Bengals drafted him in the second round in 2020. The Clemson product, who caught 141 passes for 1,999 yards and 12 touchdowns over his first two NFL seasons, has racked up 826 yards and four touchdowns on 57 receptions in 11 games this year.He also put up 103 yards on six catches in the AFC title game versus the Chiefs in January, helping Cincy edge Kansas City to advance to the Super Bowl.Reid joined Kansas City in March on a three-year deal. The 25-year-old has amassed 52 tackles and two pass breakups in 2022."Some of the missed tackles, explosive plays," Reid said Wednesday when asked what he would've done differently versus the Bengals if he was on the Chiefs last season."A lot of it is going to come down to making the play on the ball."The Bengals, owners of one of the NFL's deepest receiving corps, are also reportedly expected to welcome back star wideout Ja'Marr Chase, who's missed the last four games due to a hip injury.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. The Los Angeles Rams will be without defensive lineman Aaron Donald against the Seattle Seahawks due to an ankle injury, head coach Sean McVay announced Wednesday.Donald sustained a high ankle sprain in the Rams' 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday. The perennial All-Pro has just 49 tackles and five sacks in 11 games, but advanced metrics still have the 31-year-old among the NFL's best interior defenders. Donald has a 90.5 PFF grade this year. This will be Donald's first missed game since 2017 and only the third missed contest in his career.Defensive linemen Michael Hoecht, Jonah Williams, and Bobby Brown III will likely see more playing time with Donald unavailable and fellow starter A'Shawn Robinson on injured reserve.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. A.J. Brown ahead of matchup vs. Titans: Tennessee fans 'hate me'
Sunday's game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans at Lincoln Financial Field is one of the most anticipated matchups of the week. Not only does it feature a clash between two playoff contenders, but it's also the first time Eagles receiver A.J. Brown will face his former team.Brown, whom Tennessee traded to Philly in April, recently said he doesn't think Titans fans have fully moved on from his departure."Oh, they hate me," Brown said of Titans fans, according to James Palmer of NFL Network. "Part of it is my fault. I mean, some people still love me, but I think the majority of their fans are out to get me. It's a part of it, though."Brown added that there's "nothing personal" between him and the Titans, according to Josh Tolentino of The Philadelphia Inquirer. In May, Brown also said continuing harassment from fans following his trade from the Titans led to him canceling his inaugural youth football camp in Nashville. The 25-year-old reportedly requested a trade from the Titans three weeks before the 2022 NFL Draft amid stalled contract talks with the club. Tennessee sent him to Philadelphia during the draft in exchange for a first-round pick. The Eagles then made Brown one of the league's highest-paid receivers with a four-year, $100-million extension.Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who played with Brown between 2019-21, praised the wideout ahead of Week 13."I love A.J.," Tannehill said Wednesday, according to Ben Arthur of FOX Sports. "I miss having him around. But, obviously, he's doing well over there. Just hope it's not too well on this Sunday."Brown has caught 53 passes for 831 yards and seven touchdowns through 11 games this season. The 2019 second-round pick racked up 2,995 yards and 24 scores on 185 receptions across three campaigns with Tennessee. The 10-1 Eagles and 7-4 Titans currently lead the NFC East and AFC South, respectively.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Falcons' Pitts won't return this season after undergoing knee surgery
Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts was ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery, head coach Arthur Smith announced Wednesday, according to team reporter Tori McElhaney.Pitts suffered an MCL tear in Week 11. He was placed on injured reserve Nov. 21 and was set to miss at least four games.
Eagles' Slay praises Packers' Love following SNF matchup
Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Darius Slay believes the Green Bay Packers are set up for a bright future with Jordan Love.Slay offered unprompted praise for the backup quarterback on his "Big Play Slay" show Monday."Young buck come in (after Aaron Rodgers was hurt). Actually did a very, very solid job," Slay said. "Green Bay got a bright, bright future ... 'cause buddy was slinging it. I ain't gonna lie, he low-key look like Aaron, like he been learning a lot."It should be a blessing for him to be behind a GOAT and learning like that at a high level, and he's a talented kid. ... He just gotta wait his time just like how A-Rod waited his time for Brett Favre."Love stepped in against the Eagles on Sunday after Rodgers sustained a rib injury. The 24-year-old completed six of nine attempts for 113 yards and one touchdown, including a 63-yard score to rookie wide receiver Christian Watson on just his third attempt of the night.Rodgers plans to play Sunday against the Chicago Bears after receiving "good news with the scans" of his rib injury.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL award rankings: Updated look at race for MVP, rookie honors, more
The NFL's elite players and coaches are beginning to solidify their respective cases for the league's top individual awards 12 weeks into the 2022 season. Here's a current look at the five best candidates for each major honor:Coach of the Year5. Brian Daboll, Giants Jim McIsaac / Getty ImagesDaboll's case for Coach of the Year lost momentum as New York dropped three of its last four games. Plus, coaches like Andy Reid and Pete Carroll, among others, bolstered their resumes in that span. That said, it's still hard to find a coach who's done a better job at helping his players correct their weaknesses and find ways to highlight their strengths. Daboll's helped the Giants go 7-4 in his first year at the helm after they won just four games in 2021.4. Mike McDaniel, DolphinsHere's another first-year coach who's done a tremendous job. It didn't take long for McDaniel to turn the Dolphins into an offensive juggernaut, and Miami currently ranks third in expected points added (EPA) per play, only behind Kansas City and Buffalo. McDaniel's outfit is 8-3 - good for first place in the AFC East - with all of its losses coming in games in which quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was hurt. The Dolphins' schedule is about to get a lot harder, but they've already beaten the Ravens and Bills in 2022.3. Mike Vrabel, TitansWeren't the Titans supposed to decline? Last year, they were 8-4 after 12 weeks. In 2022, Tennessee is 7-4 and has a comfortable lead in the AFC South despite playing multiple games without its starting quarterback, left tackle, and edge rusher, among other key players along the way. Granted, the team hasn't really dominated its opponents and only has a plus-four point differential. But Vrabel's adjustments have been crucial in helping the Titans remain one of football's toughest teams.2. Mike McCarthy, CowboysMcCarthy has received a lot of hate throughout the years, but we all have to agree on one thing: He's done an excellent job in 2022 and deserves a ton of credit for what Dallas, one of the league's most balanced teams, has achieved. McCarthy's outfit has responded really well to adversity. The Cowboys have already won eight games despite dealing with significant injuries to their offensive line and quarterback, and their plus-92 point differential ranks first in the NFC.1. Nick Sirianni, Eagles Megan Briggs / Getty Images Sport / GettyIn Sirianni's second year at the helm, Philly has the best record in the NFL at 10-1. It's true that the Eagles looked more vulnerable over the last couple of weeks compared to the season's first two months, but they are still the best team in the league. The Eagles are clicking on both sides of the ball; they're one of the 10 best teams in both points scored and allowed, and their plus-13 turnover differential easily leads the league.Defensive Rookie of the Year5. Devin Lloyd, JaguarsLloyd turned heads in his first weeks in the NFL and was named Rookie of the Month in September. However, it's hard to rank him any higher given his latest performances - the first-round linebacker has struggled and even lost his starting role in the middle of Jacksonville's defense. He's racked up 74 tackles, seven pass breakups, and two interceptions.4. Jaquan Brisker, BearsUsing a second-round pick on Brisker is starting to look like a steal for Chicago. Granted, the first-year safety has missed some relatively easy tackles. But he's been a cornerstone of the Bears' defense, doing a little bit of everything. The Penn State product, who missed Week 12 due to a concussion, has recorded 73 tackles, three sacks, and one interception to go along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.3. Aidan Hutchinson, LionsHutchinson's 5.5 sacks and 16 pressures lead all rookies, but that shouldn't surprise anyone. We knew how special of a pass-rusher he was coming out of Michigan. What's been keeping the No. 2 pick in the race for DROY lately is his ability to always be around the ball. Over the last four games, Hutchinson has intercepted two passes and recovered one fumble while helping the Lions steal three wins.2. Tariq Woolen, Seahawks Nic Antaya / Getty ImagesMany around the NFL knew the potential for Woolen to become one of the biggest steals of this year's draft. He's a 6-foot-4, 205-pound corner who ran a 4.26 40-yard dash. But few people thought the fifth-round corner would adapt to the pros and exceed expectations this fast. The UTSA product, who's the best rookie of what's turning out to be an excellent 2022 draft class for Seattle, has notched nine pass breakups and five interceptions, the most among first-year players.1. Ahmad Gardner, JetsPotentially winning Defensive Rookie of the Year doesn't do justice to Gardner, who should also be named a first-team All-Pro at the end of the season. The Cincinnati product continues to make one special play after another when opposing quarterbacks throw the ball his way. He leads the league with 14 pass breakups while allowing a 57.4 passer rating in the 59 times he's been targeted.Offensive Rookie of the Year5. Garrett Wilson, JetsWilson ranks second among rookies with 49 catches, 628 receiving yards, and four touchdown receptions despite having Zach Wilson at quarterback for most of the season. With New York turning to Mike White at QB, the rookie wideout could become the first Jet to catch 1,000-plus yards in a season since Brandon Marshall in 2015.4. Christian Watson, Packers Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyIt took Watson a while to make a big impact, but he suddenly looks unstoppable. The second-round receiver, who only had a rushing touchdown in the first nine weeks, has caught six TDs in his last three games. He ranks third in the NFL with 7.8 yards after the catch per reception, and his top speed of 20.97 mph during his 63-yard score in Week 12 was the fastest max speed by a Packers ball carrier on a touchdown all season.3. Chris Olave, SaintsOlave's case for OROY would be stronger if it weren't for the Saints' struggles at quarterback. Despite missing one game this season, Olave leads his draft class in targets (92), catches (56), and receiving yards (822). The first-round pass-catcher, who's PFF's highest-graded offensive rookie, has also scored three touchdowns, including a 53-yarder in Week 11.2. Dameon Pierce, TexansWhat Pierce has done is very impressive. Despite playing in a subpar offense that ranks 25th in run blocking, according to PFF, the fourth-rounder tops all rookies in several categories, including scrimmage yards (931), rushing yards (788), and first downs on the ground (47). However, Pierce's latest performances hurt his resume here, as he collected only 33 scrimmage yards with no touchdowns over his last two games.1. Kenneth Walker, Seahawks Chris Graythen / Getty Images Sport / GettyNo other rookie has had a bigger impact. Walker's amassed 729 yards, and his nine touchdowns are easily the most among first-year players. The second-round running back's also been extremely clutch, averaging 6.2 yards per carry and scoring six TDs in the fourth quarter. That includes a 74-yarder in Week 7, during which Walker became the only ball carrier to top a max speed of 22 mph on a scoring play in 2022.Defensive Player of the Year5. Matt Judon, PatriotsThe biggest reason the Patriots have won three of their last four games is the defense, and Judon is their best defender. Though New England's front four often benefits from the team's stout pass coverage in the secondary, the 30-year-old deserves a lot of credit for ranking first and second in the league in sacks (13) and pressures (34), respectively.4. Chris Jones, ChiefsJones has been football's most disruptive interior lineman, and his game-changing plays have been key for Kansas City's defense to remain good enough while the offense takes care of business. Jones, who's PFF's second-best defender in 2022, leads all defensive tackles with 28 pressures and 10 sacks while ranking second in pass rush win rate at his position.3. Myles Garrett, Browns Jason Miller / Getty Images Sport / GettyThe fact that the Browns are 4-7 shouldn't take anything away from Garrett's spectacular campaign. In fact, he's one of the main reasons Cleveland even has four wins. The 26-year-old continues to make jaw-dropping plays week after week. PFF's top-graded defender this season, Garrett ranks first among edge defenders in pass rush win rate and has amassed 10 sacks, 25 pressures, and two forced fumbles.2. Nick Bosa, 49ersBosa makes everything look easier and is on track to earn the first All-Pro nod of his career. There are basically no flaws in his game right now. The 25-year-old's one of only three defenders to rank in the top five in sacks, pressures, QB hits, and tackles for loss in 2022. Oh, and he's also PFF's top edge rusher against the run.1. Micah Parsons, CowboysYou weren't expecting anyone else here, were you? As a pass-rusher, Parson's numbers are pretty similar to Bosa's. What gives the Cowboys star a clear advantage here is the number of game-changing plays he's made. The 23-year-old's forced three fumbles and even scored a touchdown on a fumble return. Parsons is fourth among edge defenders in pass rush win rate and has created at least three pressures in all but one game. Most Valuable Player5. Joe Burrow, Bengals Andy Lyons / Getty Images Sport / GettyBurrow earned this spot after helping the Bengals beat the Titans in Week 12 despite the absences of star receiver Ja'Marr Chase and running back Joe Mixon. And Cincy's O-line is also far from great this year. Burrow has completed 68.2% of his passes while ranking third in the league in passing yards (3,160) and second in touchdowns (tied with 23). He's also added four rushing scores, leading Cincinnati to a 7-4 record.4. Tua Tagovailoa, DolphinsTagovailoa is a very efficient passer quarterbacking one of the NFL's most dominant offenses. The Dolphins are 8-3, and all of their losses were in games in which Tagovailoa either didn't play or wasn't able to finish due to injury. The third-year signal-caller, who leads all QBs in passer rating and EPA per play, has passed for 19 touchdowns against just three interceptions through nine appearances this campaign.3. Josh Allen, BillsAllen's MVP case took a hit in November. After putting on a show in the first weeks of the season, the star passer struggled, passing for four touchdowns against five interceptions over the last four games. He's now tossed an NFL-high 11 INTs. The Bills are still one of the league's best teams - and Allen is a major reason why - but he'll need to put his game back on the right track in the final stretch of the campaign to make a run at this award.2. Jalen Hurts, EaglesThe MVP race is taking shape and, at least for now, there's a big gap between the top two candidates and the rest. Hurts has improved as a passer, and his ability to make plays with his legs has made him one of football's most dangerous quarterbacks. He's accounted for 25 touchdowns (eight on the ground) and tossed only three interceptions while helping Philly post the best record in the league.1. Patrick Mahomes, ChiefsAs impressive as other star players have been, the MVP right now belongs to Mahomes, who's the best player in football's most important position and having one of the greatest seasons of his career. The former league MVP leads the NFL with 3,585 yards and 29 touchdowns. Plus, Kansas City boasts the AFC's best record at 9-2 and the league's most efficient offense despite losing Tyreek Hill in the offseason.(Advanced stats source: Next Gen Stats, Pro Football Reference, ESPN Analytics, RBSDM.com)Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. NFL Week 13 teasers: Prime cases for teasing up and teasing down
"Teasers haven't been very good this year" is probably something you've heard in the NFL betting content space. That was true early in the season, mainly because highly-rated teams like the Buccaneers, Packers, Rams, Broncos, and Colts disappointed, losing as favorites of a touchdown or more and burning those teasing them down under a field goal.Abandoning teasers because they've struggled to be profitable early in the campaign is exactly what not to do. The whole point of culling value via teasers is that it'll work out mathematically in the long run. We're not playing teams in teasers for any other reason. The larger the sample size, the better the chance for profitability if you have an edge.Sure enough, teasers have started hitting at a higher rate recently. Last week's bucket went 5-0 after a 4-0 Week 11 and 6-1 Week 10. Why? We know the teams better, the original point spreads are more accurate, and the final scores reflect those lines more closely. Teasers should always fare better later in the season. Some games don't have a teaser-worthy point spread. For example, Week 13's Monday nighter has the Buccaneers as 3.5-point favorites at home to the Saints. Teasing Tampa would bring the spread through zero, wasting valuable price points around an improbable tie.Teasing New Orleans to +9.5 gets the key numbers through a touchdown, but you're already winning on a 3-point margin at a -110 price. Getting +6, +7, or +8 over a long sample size isn't worth the price hike to -270, especially since you're not even getting +10.Let's use the Broncos - a teaser staple - and their trip to Baltimore to exemplify the value of teasing a favorite down.ALT. SPREADODDSRavens -7.5-125Ravens -6.5-150Ravens -5.5-185Ravens -4.5-200Ravens -3.5-225Ravens -2.5-350The pricing significantly jumps once you move across the key number of -3, showing the importance of capturing that number in NFL betting. More importantly, the Ravens' alternative spread (-2.5) is priced at -350. That's much higher than getting the team at -2.5 with a teaser leg at -270.To get an incredible deal on Ravens -2.5, we must pair them with another bet and win both to cash the ticket. Fortunately, we can choose that other leg from our weekly "teaser basket" using what we know about key numbers.Teaser basketLet's look at the mathematically optimal plays available for Week 13:TEAMSPREADTEASER LEGBrowns-7-1Ravens-8.5-2.5Giants+2.5+8.5Seahawks-7.5-1.5Bengals+2.5+8.5Raiders+2+8There are three options to tease up and three to tease down. The most reliable tease down would be a home team facing a squad that's lost seven of its last eight with an offense that makes scoring look incredibly painful. Take the Ravens down under a field against the Broncos and feel good about it.In the tease-up department, the "Jekyll and Hyde" Raiders don't have the reputation of being trusted to play to an expected level. Even after beating the Seahawks in overtime, would it be surprising if the Chargers handily beat Las Vegas?Meanwhile, teasing away from the Chiefs is just asking for trouble. If Kansas City brings its A-game and executes, especially in a high-focus spot on the schedule, 8.5 points might not be enough for even a really good Bengals team. That leaves the Giants getting 8.5 points at home against the Commanders. It might surprise you that Washington is favored in that game. However, that's a fair price based on the market ratings of each team leading up to this contest. That said, when it comes to a familiar matchup, with a total in the low 40s, taking either club up over one score is a valuable play. In this case, it's the home team as the underdog.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. If there's a bad beat to be had, Matt will find it. Rodgers plans to play vs. Bears after 'good news' on injured ribs
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he plans on playing Sunday against the Chicago Bears despite the rib injury he suffered in Week 12."We're not eliminated, (and) I got good news with the scans yesterday, so I plan on playing this week," Rodgers said on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday.Rodgers left Sunday's 40-33 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the third quarter and didn't return. The Packers originally announced that the reigning NFL MVP had sustained an oblique injury, but he later said it was a rib injury, adding he wants to keep playing this season "as long as we're mathematically alive.""There was an earlier shot in the game that kind of rattled the ribcage, and I was trying to stretch some things out at halftime a little bit and realized it probably wasn't some sort of muscle injury," Rodgers said. "And it just got hit again in the third quarter. I was having a hard time breathing."I pride myself on not coming out of games, and I've played through a lot of different things over the years ... but I was in considerable pain, and I felt like I just couldn't move out there really much at all."Third-year passer Jordan Love replaced Rodgers in the game. The Packers visit the Bears in Week 13 looking to snap a two-game skid. At 4-8, Green Bay ranks third in the NFC North, one game ahead of Chicago."We're not eliminated," Rodgers said. "We got a chance to run the last five and see where we stand after that."He added: "(Whether) we're 8-4, 4-8, 12-0, 0-12, I'd be wanting to suit up this week. And not just because it's Chicago, (it's) because that's what you do. When you're a player, you go out there, and if you can play, you play."Rodgers has completed 64.8% of his passes while tossing 2,682 yards and 21 touchdowns against nine interceptions through 12 games this season.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Colts' Saturday: 'Wish I had that 3rd down back' after not calling timeout
Indianapolis Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday said Tuesday he regrets his decision not to call a timeout in the final minute of Monday's 24-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers."I wish I had that third down back. I wish I had called a timeout," said Saturday, who was coaching only his third NFL game, according to Zak Keefer of The Athletic. With his team trailing by seven points with 59 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Colts quarterback Matt Ryan ran for 14 yards to the Steelers' 26-yard line, setting up a third-and-3. Indianapolis didn't use one of its three timeouts after the play, letting the clock tick down to 30 seconds before the next snap. Jonathan Taylor then carried the ball for no gain before Saturday finally called a timeout."It's a learning experience," Saturday said. "I hold the guys accountable. I need to hold myself accountable for that ... frustrated at myself for that. That one's on me."The Colts hired Saturday, their former longtime center, as interim head coach on Nov. 7 in a stunning move to replace Frank Reich. A consultant for the Colts over the last few years, Saturday had never coached above the high school level. The 47-year-old is a member of the team's Ring of Honor after playing for Indianapolis from 1999 to 2011.Saturday originally said postgame he thought he did the right thing during the final drive against the Steelers, adding that he "thought we had plenty of time."The Colts are 1-2 under Saturday."Listen, all my coaches, whether it was Tony (Dungy), Jim Caldwell, those guys were always very transparent with the team, whether it was public or not," Saturday said, according to Keefer. "I believe in that. Inside, I wanna make sure everybody feels that you own whatever portion is yours."The 4-7-1 Colts visit the Dallas Cowboys in Week 13.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. Brady likens Bucs' 2022 season to iconic Holyfield-Tyson boxing bout
Despite coming off an overtime loss Sunday to the Cleveland Browns that dropped them to 5-6, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still in first place in the NFC South. That fact has Tom Brady seeing similarities between his team's 2022 campaign and the iconic 1997 boxing match between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson."You are a reflection of what your record says you are, and we have a losing record. But the best part is we're still in first place in our division again, which is hard to imagine," Brady said on the latest episode of his "Let's Go!" podcast. "It was like when Evander Holyfield got bit in both his ears and still won the fight against Tyson. It wasn't pretty, but he still got the job done."Tampa Bay's five wins are easily the fewest among division leaders after 12 weeks. The Falcons, who lost to the Bucs in Week 5, sit second in the NFC South with a 5-7 record.#TeamRecord1Buccaneers5-62Falcons5-73Panthers4-84Saints4-8The Buccaneers, who won 24 games combined in 2020 and 2021, have particularly struggled on offense this year, averaging only 18.2 points per contest."No football team has everything figured out for four quarters every game, every week. It's impossible," Brady said. "There's times where you have three really good quarters, (there are) times where you have four good quarters. Most of the time, you probably have two really good quarters. The good teams have three good quarters and the bad teams have one good quarter."Everyone has the chance to do it, but how well can you do it consistently over the course of a game and then, ultimately, a season? Being 5-6, I'm frustrated with the fact that we have not played well enough to be better than 5-6."Tampa Bay will try to get back into the win column versus the New Orleans Saints in Week 13. The Bucs beat the Saints 20-10 in Week 2.Only five teams in the Super Bowl era have reached the playoffs with a losing record. The last club to do it was the then-Washington Football Team in 2020 with a 7-9 campaign.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Jerry Jones still interested in OBJ despite flight incident: 'Not an issue'
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Odell Beckham Jr.'s incident on a flight isn't an issue for him, adding that he remains interested in signing the free-agent wide receiver."His overall team compatibility, his judgment, his behavior is not an issue with him," Jones said Tuesday, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. "It is with many. It isn't with him."Beckham was kicked off a plane in Miami on Sunday. Police said officers were dispatched to the flight after the crew became concerned for the wideout's health. Beckham appeared to be coming in and out of consciousness while attendants tried to wake him to fasten his seat belt. Beckham's attorney said his client didn't put his seat belt on because he fell asleep with a blanket over his head prior to takeoff.Beckham will meet with the Cowboys on Monday. The New York Giants and Buffalo Bills are reportedly also among the teams that are set to host the star receiver.Jones said the decision to pursue Beckham is about this year, not the future."We have to have this year. It's very important. This year has to be a big part of it," Jones said. "We have almost the whole show ahead of us, but we've got to have a situation where we can really contribute now."Beckham, who's been cleared to return after suffering a torn ACL in February, became a free agent after finishing last season with the Los Angeles Rams. The three-time Pro Bowler helped L.A. win the Super Bowl after joining the team midway through the campaign.Beckham finished 2021 with 44 receptions for 537 yards and five touchdowns in 14 appearances split between the Rams and Cleveland Browns. He put up 288 yards and two scores in the playoffs with Los Angeles. The 8-3 Cowboys, who rank second in the NFC East, have been looking for another high-profile receiver since trading Amari Cooper to the Browns in the offseason. CeeDee Lamb tops Dallas with 64 receptions for 857 yards and five touchdowns in 2022.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
NFL Week 12 betting takeaways: Missing quarterbacks move ratings
Heading into Week 12, we weren't sure who the best team in the NFL was. We still don't know. Last Thursday morning, the Bills were the No. 1 team in oddsmakers' ratings. But nothing was learned from Buffalo's narrow win over the Lions, the Chiefs' victory over a depleted Rams team, or the 49ers' bend-but-don't-break triumph against the Saints (San Francisco collected its one touchdown off a deflection at the end of the first half). This is our penultimate look at how oddsmakers rate teams before things get weird in the season's final few weeks. Assuming the playoff teams remain healthy, we have a pretty good handle on contenders' capabilities, even if their exact order - largely irrelevant to bettors - is uncertain. How ratings workWe look at the betting market's assessment of each team based on the closing lines from the previous week's games, and then we estimate what each club is capable of going forward. The "rating" column is an educated guess at the oddsmakers' rating to create a point spread before their most recent game. The number itself represents the percentage chance that a team beats an average opponent on a neutral field. The range column is my evaluation of each team's potential after seeing them play this season. Obviously, clubs don't perform at the same level every week; they play within a range. It's our job as handicappers to predict how they'll perform based on things like the situation, on-field matchups, and roster/injury issues. The earlier it is in the season, the wider a team's range may be.Rating before Week 12 kickoffTEAMRATINGRANGEBills7660-85Chiefs7465-8049ers7460-75Cowboys6840-70Eagles6550-75Ravens6255-70Dolphins6150-70Buccaneers6150-80Bengals5850-70Chargers5345-65Vikings5145-65Titans5040-60Patriots5040-55Commanders5030-50Packers4840-55Seahawks4635-50Jaguars4635-50Jets4635-50Saints4540-60Browns4240-65Colts4235-55Raiders4135-55Falcons4030-50Broncos3930-50Steelers3835-50Cardinals3835-55Giants3730-50Lions3630-50Panthers3220-40Rams2525-60Bears2420-45Texans2020-35The Eagles' rating fell again after they squeaked past the Colts in Week 11, and given their game against the Packers landed within a half-point of the spread, 65/100 is a pretty good rating for Philadelphia. That rating is the same as it was through much of their hot start. The Buccaneers didn't live up to the boost they got from a win over the Seahawks in Germany and a subsequent bye week. Even the most basic head coaching strategy likely would have given them a win and a cover, but Todd Bowles' decision to take a delay of game penalty, punt on fourth-and-2 from the 37-yard line, and not use all of his timeouts late was malpractice. It's concerning that Tom Brady apparently doesn't have the power or wherewithal to overrule such decisions. The Buccaneers' rating should be heading back toward mediocrity. The Dolphins-Texans game was more interesting before kickoff than it was after. Miami went up - off a bye and a blowout against the Browns - but it was Houston that went as low as we're willing to go, creating a 14.5-point spread it couldn't quite cover after trailing 30-0. Things only get more interesting in the market this week as the Browns get Deshaun Watson back for their trip to Houston. The Broncos' rating needs to drop even further, as it's hard to imagine them winning another game this season. The Panthers, meanwhile, showed more than a few signs of life with Sam Darnold. We now have an understanding of the Rams' rating without both Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp, and it's rough for the defending Super Bowl champions. The same goes for the Bears without Justin Fields, as Chicago was worse than the market imagined - even after a late drop following erroneous reports of a Nathan Peterman start. Mike White proved why the Jets' rating went up after they benched nominal starting quarterback Zach Wilson.Matt Russell is a betting writer for theScore. NFL Power Rankings - Week 13: Eagles back to No. 1, Bucs slide
The NFL Power Rankings are selected by a panel of theScore's football editors.1. Philadelphia Eagles (10-1) Icon Sportswire / Icon Sportswire / GettyPrevious Rank: 2Jalen Hurts continues to be the catalyst for Philly's potent offense. The Eagles are back in flight mode after torching the Packers for 363 rushing yards in prime time.2. Kansas City Chiefs (9-2)Previous Rank: 1Mahomes & Co. continue to steamroll the competition after drubbing the reigning champs. With the MVP favorite hitting his stride, the Chiefs appear to be a juggernaut with few weaknesses as the second half of the season progresses.3. Dallas Cowboys (8-3)Previous Rank: 3The Cowboys are riding with plenty of momentum after stringing consecutive wins over clubs with winning records. With Odell Beckham Jr. set to finally visit, Dallas' impressive production may receive a further boost as the team continues its upward trend.4. Miami Dolphins (8-3)Previous Rank: 4Tua Tagovailoa is ascending toward the upper echelon of QBs. After securing an easy win last Sunday, head coach Mike McDaniel turns his attention to a return to San Francisco against an opponent he'll be all too familiar with.5. San Francisco 49ers (7-4) Thearon W. Henderson / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 6The NFL's top-ranked defense has the 49ers rolling. Winners of four straight contests, including a shutout of the Saints, San Francisco now has sole possession of first place in the NFC West.6. Buffalo Bills (8-3)Previous Rank: 5While a record-setting snowfall caused logistical chaos, the Bills stayed cool under pressure to score back-to-back wins in Detroit. Getting healthy remains a primary concern for the club as Von Miller and Dion Dawkins' health statuses remain in limbo.7. Cincinnati Bengals (7-4)Previous Rank: 9The Bengals have impressed during their current three-game winning streak. With star receiver Ja'Marr Chase set to make his return in Week 13, Cincy should be in top form for its 2021 AFC Championship Game rematch with the Chiefs in prime time next weekend.8. Minnesota Vikings (9-2)Previous Rank: 8Minnesota should set its gaze on the No. 1 seed in the NFC as playoff position becomes a priority. No team seems to have an answer to Justin Jefferson, who has recorded 100 yards and a touchdown in three of his past four outings.9. Washington Commanders (7-5)Previous Rank: 13The Commanders find themselves at the bottom of the NFC East standings yet hold a playoff spot. Taylor Heinicke has the offense clicking and Chase Young's possible return would bolster the defense.10. Tennessee Titans (7-4) Silas Walker / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 10Derrick Henry looked like a mere mortal in a loss for the Titans. While the offense still needs to run through the throne of the King, perhaps it's time to let rookie Treylon Burks get more looks.11. Baltimore Ravens (7-4)The Ravens' offense severely lacks playmakers. An easy schedule down the stretch will help their chances of winning the AFC North.Previous Rank: 712. New York Jets (7-4)Mike White gives the Jets' offense a higher ceiling. He played mistake-free football against the Bears, which gives their defense a chance to carry them into the playoffs.Previous Rank: 1613. Los Angeles Chargers (6-5)The Chargers are coming off a big win against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 12. When Justin Herbert is your quarterback, you have a chance to win each week.Previous Rank: 1714. Seattle Seahawks (6-5)The Seahawks are currently out of the NFC playoff picture, with the Commanders taking possession of the last wild-card spot. However, Seattle still has the injury-riddled Rams twice on its schedule.Previous Rank: 1215. New England Patriots (6-5) Adam Bettcher / Getty Images Sport / GettyNew England gave the Vikings a run for their money on Thanksgiving. However, the Patriots conceded 33 points, which isn't sustainable if they want to make the playoffs, considering their offensive limitations.Previous Rank: 1416. New York Giants (7-4)The Giants have lost three of their last four games after starting the season 6-1. Their playoff hopes are dwindling, and they still have to play the Eagles twice.Previous Rank: 1517. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-6)The Buccaneers are last in the NFL in rushing yards per game, and those issues returned to the forefront in their loss to the Browns. To make matters worse, Cleveland has one of the league's worst rushing defenses. You cannot be a Super Bowl contender if you can't run on the Browns.Previous Rank: 1118. Detroit Lions (4-7)Head coach Dan Campbell has the Lions playing great football right now. They have won three of their last four games and came close to beating the Bills on Thanksgiving.Previous Rank: 1919. Atlanta Falcons (5-7)The Falcons' playoff hopes took a hit with their loss to the Commanders. They still have a game against the NFC South-leading Buccaneers, which they will have to win if they want to take the division.Previous Rank: 1820. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-7) Courtney Culbreath / Getty Images Sport / GettyTrevor Lawrence's talents were on full display in the Jaguars' win against the Baltimore Ravens. Jacksonville may not be a playoff contender this season, but the franchise is in good hands with Lawrence at the helm.Previous Rank: 2321. Green Bay Packers (4-8)Previous Rank: 20A late-season run to the playoffs became all the more unlikely with Sunday night's loss to the Eagles, and now Aaron Rodgers' status is up in the air.22. Arizona Cardinals (4-8)Previous Rank: 21Three straight three-and-outs with a chance to put the Chargers away late is inexcusable. The Cardinals' offense continues to disappoint.23. Cleveland Browns (4-7)Previous Rank: 28An impressive overtime win over the Bucs was a nice way for Jacoby Brissett to cap off the solid job he's done as the starter. Deshaun Watson makes his Browns debut this week.24. Pittsburgh Steelers (4-7)Previous Rank: 25The Steelers will have to get hot to avoid Mike Tomlin's first-ever losing season. Getting the ball to George Pickens as much as possible gives them their best chance.25. Indianapolis Colts (4-7-1) Michael Hickey / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 24Jeff Saturday is learning on the fly, and that's never been clearer than when the Colts' offense completely botched its last-minute attempt at a game-tying drive in Monday night's loss to the Steelers.26. Las Vegas Raiders (4-7)Previous Rank: 29Josh Jacobs continued his unbelievable season with over 300 scrimmage yards while leading the Raiders to an overtime victory in Seattle. There have been a few bright spots in an otherwise frustrating season for Las Vegas.27. Chicago Bears (3-9)Previous Rank: 22Justin Fields is the entire Bears offense right now. If he misses significant time down the stretch, Chicago could find itself trending further and further toward the top of the draft.28. Carolina Panthers (4-8)Previous Rank: 30The Panthers continue to show fight after a midseason coaching change. They're now 3-4 since Steve Wilks took over for Matt Rhule.29. New Orleans Saints (4-8)Previous Rank: 26Against the 49ers, the Saints were shut out for the first time since 2001, ending the NFL's longest streak. Not having their first-round pick next year is really going to sting.30. Los Angeles Rams (3-8) David Eulitt / Getty Images Sport / GettyPrevious Rank: 27With injuries continuing to pile up, it's tough to see the Rams winning many more games. The second of two first-round picks sent to the Lions in the Matthew Stafford trade could be a top-two selection.31. Denver Broncos (3-8)Previous Rank: 31The clock is ticking for Nathaniel Hackett. Denver can only hope a new coaching staff is enough to fix the offense.32. Houston Texans (1-9-1)Previous Rank: 32The Texans just aren't competitive right now. No team needs the No. 1 pick more.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. Certain content reproduced under license.
Colts' Saturday defends clock management: 'Thought we had plenty of time'
Indianapolis Colts interim head coach Jeff Saturday believes he managed the clock adequately on the final drive of Monday night's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Colts were down 24-17 with 59 seconds left in the game when quarterback Matt Ryan ran for 14 yards to the Steelers' 26-yard line to set up a third-and-3. Saturday neglected to use one of his three timeouts after Ryan's run, and the clock ticked down to 30 seconds before the next snap."I thought we had plenty of time," Saturday said, according to Clayton Holloway of NFL Network. "I wasn't too concerned."Indianapolis' third-down play was a Jonathan Taylor run that was stopped for no gain, forcing Saturday, who was in his third game as an NFL coach, to finally use a timeout."I didn't feel like time was really of the essence at the moment. I thought we had a good play ... I felt like we had time, we have timeouts afterward. We were in striking distance. I never felt the pressure of needing a timeout," Saturday added, per Andrew Mason of 104.3 The Fan.Ryan ultimately threw an incompletion on fourth down, which ended Indianapolis' last-ditch effort to tie the game. The Colts' offense struggled to move the ball in the first half, totaling only 66 yards and five first downs. They had 266 yards in the second half, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Steelers.Saturday confirmed postgame that Ryan will continue to start at quarterback going forward, according to James Boyd of The Athletic. The Colts' loss drops them to 4-7-1 on the season and 1-2 since Saturday took over as interim head coach in place of Frank Reich.Copyright © 2022 Score Media Ventures Inc.
